Freeze when usually playing games.

Question: Freeze when usually playing games.

Hello everyone here at Win7 Forums! I've been lurking around looking for a way to fix this...

Every now and then when I start to play a game for a big (CSS/BF2/L4D/Gmod) Anything, really. My computer starts to freeze up, and skip it's audio. No BSOD's, no black screens, but just freezing.

My system specs are entered, so i shouldn't need to post them.

I really wish I could get some help on this as it's driving me insane!

Preferred Solution: Freeze when usually playing games.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I hope you guys can help, i have read some great stuff on the site but can't seam to fix my problem.

I get a screen freeze and audio loop when using the net or playing games that used to run fine. Sometimes i can be on a web page for 2 minutes, other times 20. Same same with games like COD MW2. The only thing i can do is hold down the power button to shut down nothing else works.

Also sometimes i get a black screen where the display turns off just before it freezes.
No BSOD so no dump
Attached is a snippet from event viewer but i don't really understand it....NEWB

No problems watching movies, listening to music etc.

Thanks in advance

I am experimenting a similar issue with a new Toshiba A505-S6020 that I recently bought.

Intel Core i5

Seems like sometimes the notebook freezes without any good reason. I need to reboot it completely and start again.

Anyone knows how I could get any further information about this crash? I am not sure why it happens, but I noticed that sometimes that happened after hibernating.

Thank you

My problem is that everyone of the games I attempt to play freeze every single time I try to play them. They are just random lock-ups and the screen becomes a picture frame. I'm running XP Pro Service pack 2 I have an AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 1.2 GHz 256 Mb of Ram NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 100/200 VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) Maxtor 20 GB hard drive I tryed formatting my hard drive and reinstalling XP but all to no avail. My drivers are up to date. I even tryed rolling back my drivers to see if that would work. Any help would be greatly welcomed.

My first time posting to a forum, as I usually just read around.

Hi all, I have read various forums and googled around and cannot figure out why my computer freezes when playing games.

My computer has frozen on Total War Rome 2 since the fresh windows install. Before, it froze on BF4, Starcraft 2, Assassins Creed Black Flag, Civilization 5 (Dx9 and Dx11) and a few others. This is a new build from February and began freezing suddenly about a week ago (4/26ish).

When I say "freeze" i mean the computer completely locks up, I cant tab out or CTRL-ALT-DEL and the mouse just hangs. I have gotten the BSOD 1-2 times but freezing is much more common.

My specs:
AMD FX 8350 - black edition
GIGABYTE GTX 770 4gb (furmark - 4600 points)
2x 4gb G-Skill
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
650W consair PSU

I have tried:
Fresh install of windows - Fully updated
GPU Stress test (1080p Furmark - min 30c max 72c)
GPU drivers are up to date.
memtest86 - 4 passes on each stick
change settings to "power saver"

I am stuck and hopefully these debugger reports can help me. Thank you to anyone reading this.

Answer:Computer freeze when playing games

Seems the dump files are not in there. Go to this folder: C:\Windows\Minidump, check if there are any files in there.

If not, follow this Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD to make sure it is configured properly.

Other than that.

memtest86 - 4 passes on each stick

You want to run memtest for atleast 8 passes. Preferably over night.

I started getting this today for some reason. My setup had been the same for the last 6 months or so and out of nowhere while playing a game I had installed for a month I instantly got a BSOD. I tried updating my gfx drivers but didn't really help much at all.

I also get some random errors when trying to load them up now after a few BSODs (i.e. explorer.exe stops working then restarts, desktop manager error etc.)

My specs:
Win7 x64
Gigabyte MA770
Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 ti
Phenom II x4 940

No OCing involved

Here are the dump files

Based on the behavior you describe, check for file data corruption:Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log

Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker up to three times to fix all errors. Post back if it continues to show errors after a fourth run or if the first run comes back with no integrity violations.

Hello, I recently build this PC and it works fine for the most part, but sometimes (twice so far) I got a weird screen freeze while playing games, that I cant figure out myself.

I build this PC 4 days ago, so not sure what to make of it.

When the freeze happens, it is a certain color, with stripes from top to bottom.

I checked the log, and it gave this error message:

Hi everyone,

Can you please provide me some hints how to track the cause of a system freeze with an horrible sound loop when playing FFXIV.

Here is the SF file Attachment 28542

Answer:Freeze while playing games, no BSOD.

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

If not experiencing BSOD's, please also upload this report:
- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog))
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

First off, a disclaimer - I am not familiar w/8.1 so my analysis is based on Win8 RTM
8.1 is (as I understand it) a Developer's Release - so it can be expected to have bugs.
In the end, the only sure thing will be to revert to Win8 RTM and wait for the RTM version of 8.1

Ensure that you have ALL Windows Updates. This is very important!

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

The symptoms sound like a video problem - and there are video errors in the WER section of MSINFO32.
Please follow these suggestions for troubleshooting the video errors (even though you haven't seen BSOD's): Video TDR Timeout - 0x116 + 0x117 - Sysnative Forums

when ever i play wow or any games my computer seems to not like it but when i'm just on facebook or i'm listening to music on itunes it seems to be fine.
my graphics driver is up to date.
also when i start my computer up sometimes comes up with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL then it sometimes wont start up for awhile and the cpu fan wont even start but i think i can hear the Gcard fan going faster then drop and speed then speed up again and i will have to wait like 30mins then come to try again to start it up. but it would only crash again on games
when i open debug my Dmp it says at the end that hardware was the cause but im not sure what hardware it is i might be my graphics card but im not sure thanks.

I have started playing Guild Wars 2, after the first couple of days my game started to freezing and black screen to desktop before going back into game to only black screen again. At times my monitor would say no signal. The problem disappeared for close to 5 days and came back up again. I've tried playing other games and the problem is similar, freezing to desktop, black screen and crashing to desktop.

During the black screen to desktop I would get 'Display driver stopped responding and has recovered'. I have updated to a few different drivers including the latest stable driver from Nvidia but the problem still exists.

I have ran VMT for 10 passes with no errors.

Prime95 Small FFTs for over 2hours with no errors.

Running FurMark the test does complete when I run BenchMark(user's setting) when I do the Burn In-Test everything looks okay until my GPU hits 80c. The computer would shut off then. Though when I play games my gpu varies between 50 to 62c.

This is getting really frustrating... I can be sim racing or whatnot and the game freezes on the screen yet keeps playing in the background. The game continues to work but the screen is stuck.

My video card then resets itself (changes resolution, refresh rate, or colour quality). GPU temp is 78C, card is a Radeon 9800XT.

Why does it keep doing this?

So I began having issues with my PC freezing up or giving me the BSOD while playing games. Half of the time my picture will distort and freeze. When this happens the whole computer is unresponsive then ends up requiring a reset. The other half I will receive the BSOD.

When this began I used HWMonitor to try and narrow down the issue and notice my CPU temp would spike up to 90c during heavy load. So I cleaned my case out, put new thermal paste on and brought a new heatsink. This got my temp down a lot to about 65c during gaming and 40c while idle. Although I made this change I still had random freezes and BSOD.

I also ran Memtest86 to make sure my memory was ok and everything came back clear. Last but not least I upgraded the firmware on my SSD.

Unfortunately I'm still not having any luck. I don't have an extra GPU or PSU to narrow it down anymore but would hoping maybe you guys might see something that could be at fault before I buy any replacement parts.

So far that where I'm currently at.

Thanks guys.

Any thoughts on why this might be? Is it a graphics problem? CPU? Should he be re-installing his OS?

I will be playing a game. After 30-45 minutes, my monitor displays "no signal" and the audio repeats the last millisecond until I turn off the computer using the button. I have tried messing with the cables, nothing happened. Funnily enough, this once happened while I was Skyping and I was able to continue to continue the conversation without a problem (only my game audio had glitched out, Skype worked and my USB mic continued to function). But according to him, I had left the Payday game I was in. This is not an overheating issue. I played TF2 (one of the games this occurred with) for about half an hour with a temp reading program open and task manager. My processor never went above 50% and the temps were slightly below 50C the whole time (I quit after half an hour, I didn't crash at that time). All of my drivers are up to date, all of the updates from Windows Update have been installed and the computer is otherwise well maintained. This computer was used by my mother to play Sims 2 and 3 and she never had any problems whatsoever playing them. It was passed directly to me and the only changes I made before installing my games was uninstalling hers.I have played TF2, The Forest, Gmod, and Payday: The Heist on this computer. It has happened with all of these games except Gmod, but I only played that for about 10 minutes. What is wrong here? And how fix?

Answer:Computer Freeze/Crash While Playing Games

All these games are playing through Steam Client. My guess is that there is an issue with the Steam Client. Have you uninstalled the Steam Client and downloaded and installed clean again to see if this will fix this?Also... is this the same system you have in your Computer:Specs link of your profile at CH?I have had some issues with Steam Client, and uninstalling, rebooting system, and then installing clean fixed this.

Processor: Pentium D 3.6 2x (model number SL9AP)
Motherboard: Biostar TP45E Combo

RAM: 4g ddr3 corsair

Since the problem has occured i've replaced the motherboard, ram, and video card.

Note: The SL9AP processor says it matches any 775 socket. But biostars tp54e motherboard doesnt list SL9AP as supported- would the computer be able to even powerup if this was an issue?

ALSO, my computers powerup process is questionably long, it will take about 10 seconds to bring me to the "Tseries" motherboard screen after powerup(this is without CD drive plugged in). If i plug the cd drive in it will take 15-30 seconds before mobo screen, could this point to power supply? This is not an issue that occurred at first(when the freezing started) and my guess is its from a deteriorating psu.

any suggestions/questions?

I'm curious about this:Quote8g of memory (got a stick from a friend that I put in there so its just a 32 bit)Why? XP doesn't need more than 1GB of RAM to run fine. Is it right type of RAM. 32-bit system can't use more than 4GB of RAM anyway. You're getting low on HD space, as well. Windows needs 15% of free space to operate correctly. In your case, it's 45GB, and you have 39GB free.

Seems like this is a windows file and the reasons could be as wide as corrupt registry entry to a corrupt windows installation.
Usually to check for windows errors, click on start then open CMD with admin rights
Type scannow /f
See if any error pop up
Since its a new laptop, you can try to Reset the PC to factory settings and install softwares carefully. Its possible the some software corrupted this file.
To Reset the PC (Note - This will delete all personal data) -
1) Shutdown laptop.
2) Press One key recovery button
3) Select (Advanced options) Troubleshoot > Reset this PC

Whenever I've tried to play music, a dvd or video of any sort, or play a game my computer has been getting complete freeze ups. The problem only started around 3 - 4days ago.
I play music in Itunes, and this is where the problem started, however, I have also tried using winamp and vlc but I get the same problem. I can get anywhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes of music before the problem occurs but when it does it locks up the whole computer, i can move my mouse around but nothing can be clicked, no keyboard commands are working (ctrl + alt + del, alt + f4 etc.). When the song freezes it will constantly loop the second of the song that it froze on but no other worrying sounds are made by any part of the computer.

If I'm watching a video I once again get between 30 seconds and 10 minutes before a problem occurs, the audio will carry on as normal, but the video will hang and thats when the whole computer freezes. Once again, no keyboard commands work, and the mouse can move but not interact.
When playing games everything is fine until i try to close the game or click (or alt + tab) away from it, then it will get caught half way between the command and freeze up the entire computer just like the other causes of freezing.

The only way I can un-freeze my computer is to turn it off at the power button or using the restart button.
I've used various anti-virus, registry cleaner, diagnostic tools etc. but nothing seems to have helped the situation, a system re... Read more

Answer:PC Freeze while playing games (league of legends) No BSOD

If you are running AMD graphics drivers this is your answer. League of Legends is one of the games in an extensive listing of games that AMD asks if you're running when graphics drivers crashes. I don't play those types of games...but I just got a new computer 4 months ago which runs AMD HD radeon 8400 graphics. After a couple automatic driver updates to the current version 13.12 I began having random driver crashes while streaming online tv. I began exploring the internet & there's loads of information documenting this problem which is a pandemic that plagues AMD Radeon graphics in all chipset series from the 5200-7975...To date there is no fix...AMD (if that's the graphics card in your system) has a reporting form on their website for you to log the crash report...they ask for all system specs be submitted. I think they're compiling data so that a fix (or patch) can be designed....until then, the freezes [what my computer does...locks up, everything freezes & once I got black screen] will continue to happen. I guess you just sort of have to put up with it or get the graphics card replaced with some other architecture (branding). I did find info. with a few complaints about intels i3 graphics also having glitches. I'm sort of regretting having gone with the AMD, I knew nothing of this in my purchase decision. There was nothing to indicate there was an extensive flaw in the update for the drivers. I wish I could "roll back" the driver but don't find that opt... Read more

Hey, im having the most annoying problems. Fresh install for windows 7 ultimate x64, never experienced problems like this before. So whats happening, first off when i went to install windows 7 it took 6 times to get an install without problems. Secondly now that ive got a good install, im experiencing numerous problems. I've had 3 bsod's and a few times a day im experiencing crashes like i haven't seen before. The whole computer freezes. i cant even turn num lock on my keyboard and worst of all i cant even click the restart button i actually have to turn it off at the mains. i normally experience this when playing a game, but non of my components are overheating, i think it could be my hard drive as i had the problems installing software on previous windows installation.

Just got a new PC and I'm experiencing BSODs while playing games (generally high end games). Sometimes there is no BSOD and the game just crashes, or the GPU driver stops responding and recovers.
I tried everything I thought of, that is clean install of GPU drivers, updated all other drivers and even a Windows format, but the problem still persists. Attached please find the latest dump files and a DxDiag system specs file.

Alright, so after reinstalling drivers for my Nvidia Geforce GTX 570, updating Java, updating windows completely, I am still at a loss as to how to go about fixing this problem.

When playing anything graphics-intensive (Minecraft, Skyrim, or any video game) I will get about 4 minutes of gameplay, and then the screen will freeze while the audio sounds like it is grinding to a halt. Only after rebooting in safemode, where windows gives me a error screen that contains this message:

Hey friends,I am having a problem where during gameplay on several games (I list at least three below) I begin to show signs of stuttering followed by the computer locking up. When the computer locks up, it either does one of three things (from most often to least often):1. Simply freezes, not allowing me to move the mouse, input any keys, or otherwise do anything but force a restart. During this, the audio remains stuttering in my earsets.2. Gives me a blue screen of death. A blue screen report is found below. The game freezes (with the audio stuttering) until the Blue Screen pops up.3. The audio stutters, I can't input any keys, but the mouse works.I have updated the drivers for my video card, the BIOS of my mother board, and the soundcard. The soundcard I have not tested yet to see whether that has fixed the problem. I have also run a full hardware diagnostic and the full SMART test on the HD without any problems. Hello, I have a question. My Lenovo Yoga 720 15.6" doesn't overheat, although I've noticed something rather odd. When I play Fifa 17 with the charger plugged in, the fans are very loud and the laptop gets pretty hot. When I play Fifa 17 on battery only (charger not plugged in) the fans are quite silent and the laptop doesn't get hot at all. Why is that? For all I know, I would expect the exact opposite...Thanks in advance!Kind regards,Tijs

Answer:Lenovo Yoga 720 15" : hot when playing games on charger, cool when playing games on battery???

The CPU runs at full speed when it is plugged in and runs more slowly on battery to save power. Faster = more heat.

Hello all,

I've been having a few problems with my laptop since I bought it. The problem mainly occurs when I'm playing a game (usually xcom: enemy unknown or deus ex HR at the moment) but has occurred when I'm browsing the internet (albeit far less often). The BSODs appear to be random but I'm using a blue tooth mouse and have noticed the BSOD will usually happened if I'm using it. I've also noticed that my laptop screen with black out for a split second on games that are quite graphics intensive for my system.

Its been frustrating me a lot so I reinstalled and fully updated windows 7. The GPU drivers are all up to date also.

I've attached the SF file that is required and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks for your time

I've been having this issue for nearly a year now (probably around 9 months). It started after my little sister made me get a virus by her trying to download something onto my laptop. I've since taken it to a reputable computer shop as well as followed instructions from other computer wizs and I think it's no longer there. Issue is, my computer has kind of developed another problem after that. It freezes on it's own sometimes, when I pick it up or even when it's on a desk and immobile. It would also freeze when I play a game sometimes, loud buzzing sound as the game continues in loops I believe. I had BSOD problems earlier this year that was solved (Apparently. I haven't gotten any in about 4-5 months) when I had Windows 7 but this issue still persists.

When it would freeze and I manually turn off my computer and turn it back on, the laptop would sometimes say no wifi could be detected. At all. Not mine, not my neighbors, nothing. I've never really taken it out of the house so I don't know if it'd act the same elsewhere. I would then shut it down and take out the battery for 30 seconds before putting it back in. Sometimes the wifi would work then or I'd go connect it to my Internet Modem and the wifi would start working over there too.

So I'm not sure what's causing this problem. It's not overheating as I had it cleaned less than 4 months ago by a professional. I've had this laptop for two years and I really wanted it to last me at least 4 because I'll be going into an ani... Read more

So I recently opened my CPU because it was lagging and I thought maybe a little clean up might do the trick. So I softly brushed the drivers inside the CPU to get some dust off. However, when I turned on my PC, it seems that whenever I watch videos or play games, a loud crackling sound comes out from my speakers. I don't know what is causing this.

I have tried disabling my drivers (sound and display) but to no avail. However, if I mute the volume on my sound driver, the sound disappears. Which lead me to the conclusion that it might be a conflict of sound and display.

Since the problem only occured when I opened my CPU and cleaned it, it might also be a wiring problem or something.

Can someone help me on this?

Hello sevenforums Community,
since about month im getting Bluescreens, which never happened before in 4 years.
It usually get the when i watch streams on twitch (which didnt happen since 1 week on my account though) or currently while playing League of Legends.
But they dont come every game, so i can for example play 4 games in a row and nothing happens or i get 3 one them in one game. Also they can come at any game time. It is kind of random to me how they appear.
The last two days I got about 7 so i really need help from u guys.
In the last two weeks i always got this message (STOP : 0x00007A (0xFFFF6FC50023598,0xFFFFFFFFC000000E,0x000000002A991880,0xFFFFF8A0046B30BE) ) without a sound and the pc didnt instantly reboot.
But the last days the Blackscreen stayed like 4 second so i couldnt see the error message on it, so i dont know if the error changed but there was this buzzing sound.

I really appreciate help (and sorry for my english skills ^^)

Last summer I was downstairs on my pc connected to an ethernet to the router. Internet was great no problems really.. I have a twin brother who is upstairs and he used wireless he lagged alot and he only had problems if I was on my computer and that went on for a while. I have a grandfather who sat infront of me while I was on my pc and I couldnt do it so I moved upstairs but I didnt have a wireless pci adapter for my pc I had a wifi adapter which you plug in the wall to wirelessy connect to the router downstairs and I just put my pc's ethernet into the wireless adapter. I used that for a little bit until I couldnt take the high ping I was getting in game servers forcing me to just move my pc in the corner of my room and I havent been on it since. I have been playing ps4 using a wireless connect to the router downstairs. I have connection problems off and on but not every day. I today just got back on my pc and I am expieriencing constant lag and disconnection from games and discord. My router is the NightHawk AC1700 ,my Adapter is a tplink adapter. What can I do to increase my internet speeds I just dont want so much lag and horrible ping when I play my pc games with my friends.. and a reminder my router is downstairs with the modem.

I just updated and rebuilt my PC and have reinstalled Win 7 64 bit and am constantly getting a BSOD while using the PC. Specifically while downloading/installing/playing games. I have also had the error occur just while surfing the internet.
From the program Blue Screen Viewer it seems to be caused by ntoskrnl.exe+7f1c0 and/or ntoskrnl.exe+7e769
I can not find any solution to fix this issue, I have updated drivers, I have ran the Microsoft memory checker, , I have changed out my memory, tried 2 other video cards, tried two different wireless network cards, now on wired connection, I even changed motherboards, got the errors on both SSD and HDD. The only things I haven't changed out is the PS and CPU, since I am using the PC to write this I am ruling out the CPU as the issue.

I have used Memtest86 and prime95 to test the memory and CPU, nothing is coming back with errors or issues. I did run driver verifier and got two .dmp files for some specific files but not sure what to do with those now. They are included in the attachement

It seems to be software/driver issue but I can not figure it out.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Hi Guys,

I have issues with my desktop. I randomly get the bsod (kernel data inpage error). I thought it started after I installes the new ATI drivers. So I tried older drivers but without any result. After that I thought it was an issues with Win 7 64bit. So I installed 32bit. But still I get the bsdod.

can you please help?

I have a new installed os.The old one started giving trouble after 2 years.

Answer:BSOD randomly after playing games or playing movies )

SP1 isn't installed, please do the following:

Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1
1. Visit the PC manufacturer's website and update ALL drivers. DO NOT use Windows Update or the "Update drivers" function of Device Manager.
2. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)
3. Visit Windows Update and get all updates (may take repeated visits)
4. Visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates). Read these notes for installing SP1: Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center
5. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates. May take repeated visits, but keep it up until you get several "Windows is updated" results.
If you're having difficulties with installing a Service Pack, please use the SURTool from this link: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?
Also, check out this troubleshooting link from Microsoft: Troubleshoot problems installing Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

I have had limited success in installing updates/Service Packs when using a "clean boot". I suspect that I'm just bypassing the problem - and that it can come back to bite me in the butt later on.

Hello guys. So here is my issue i dont really know how to specific it further then this still hope it will help.

I have been getting BSOD for a while now and it's getting to the point i cant do a single thing on the computer. I did the config for dumps and so on and ended up with this RAR file with all the info i assume. I mostly get the bluescreen when i try to watch anime etc on googlechrome. It never works it's a matter of seconds before the BSOD comes. But when watching it on other browsers like opera it works just fine "mostly" even there it bluescreens from time to time. And then there is when it's most fatal, Playing onlinegames. Whenever I play online games like World of warcraft, League of Legends, Heroes of Neweart etc etc etc i risk getting bluescreens. It differs very much from game to game how often the bluescreens appear and it seems to not be preformance related since sometimes i play constantly for hours when maxing out games and pushing the computer to it's limits when it comes to frames. And still the bluescreen lies in dorment waiting for a more suitable interrupt for me. From the looks of it the bluescreen is related mostly to my operatingsystem more then commponents after i looked at the dumpfiles via "Bluescreenviewer".

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this and i hope you guys can help me with this. also this is my first post so I maybe did this typical "bad thread", Still i hope this will get me atleast closer to... Read more

Hello All

I have an HP Pavilion p7-1254 (at least started as that, had some stuff upgraded, explained below), AMD A6-3620 2.2Ghz Quad Core with AAHD2-HL board; save you the time of looking it up if needed. What happens is the system with will just freeze. Occasionally the audio that was playing with stutter infinitely like a skipping CD. Rarely I notice the system will stutter once or twice before totally freezing, happens in a couple seconds. But mostly, it just stops. When it freezes, the only option is to hard reboot.

I have had this problem for quite some time, probably about a year or two. At first I really didn't notice any consistency in the crashes, seems totally random. Some times it would freeze while browsing any random page, be it videos, forums, ad ridden or ad free. Any browser as well; Chrome, Firefox, IE. It also crashes when playing some games although not other games that have higher requirements; e.g. Guaranteed to crash, probably within 10 mins, if I play '8-bit Boy' on Steam (about as low res as implied) but I can go on 4 and 5 hour binges on Elder Scrolls Online or Skyrim with no crashes. I have recently noticed that YouTube videos (any video) is a guaranteed crash within a 20-30 seconds.

I have tried everything I have been able to find to do, to try and fix this issue; but none have worked. So far the hardware parts that have been replaced with new components are the RAM (now 2x4GB GEIL Enhanced Corsa PC3-12800), HDD (now 2TB WD Cavi... Read more

Hello, first time poster looking for help as I can't diagnose my issue after trying numerous things. Currently when I play a game the BSOD happens randomly, I can go a whole day without it, or it can happen frequently. It happens the most when I close or exit a game, then it'll kick to a blue screen.

I really appreciate what you guys do and I hope I followed all the instructions right on how to post my logs and stuff, here's the attachment and some basic system specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I have reinstalled to this computer numerous times.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad q9550 @ 2.83 ghz

GPU: Radeon HD 5770

Mem: 4 Gigs of Memory

Motherboard: p5n32-e sli nforce 680i chipset

Answer:BSOD Playing various games, closing games, no overheating.

Before we can even begin to find the underlying cause you need to update the following drivers. Especially asacpi.sys. Yours is from 2005

ASACPI.sys 3/27/2005 10:30:36 PM
Lycosa.sys 1/18/2008 4:51:42 AM
nvm62x64.sys 10/17/2008 5:01:06 PM
netr28x.sys 2/25/2009 11:02:09 PM
How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference

Hello all!
i was searching all week about my pc problem and the search lead me here,so i hope i will get the info and tip i need. Here is my problem(its not just me i found a lots of ppl with this problem):
I use my Pc only for playing WoW,Dota and movies and all was O K untill 1 month ago when for no reason(yet) my Pc freezed while i was watching movie, ctrl + alt+ del didnt work so i needed to restart my pc.After that i check the hardware for overheat but it was fine so i started the movie again and same thing. Then i restart it again and started WoW and i played like 14 h and nothing heppend,Pc didnt freeze. So i suspect that the codec's were the reason so i downloaded the lastest codec and latest Bs Player, started the SAME movie again and same heppend,so i deleted the movie and started other one and same thing.I formated Windows Xp Sp 3 and get all latest software, drivers, codec's,antivirus etc etc.And started a movie again and Pc freezed again. So i made a lots of tests and scan's for my hard disk Seagate 80 Gb Sata Raid to see for BAD sector and there was none. And now i dont know what is the reason that i cant play a movie but i can play games all day.
I hope that some1 knows what i need to do.

hello everyone ,for start is my first post and i want to thank in advance to ppl for reading about my trouble , im a average computer user , i know few things but im looking for some good advise as i still dont know what could be the problem in my new pc and if is worthy to try to solve or try to get my money back!

i bought recently a refurbished from factory advent qc-6003 , it's a fast computer for its price ,i bought a pny geforce 9400gt 512m, installed vista and played some warcraft and it was crashing every half n hour , lock ups , no alt f4 no crt +alt +del , frozen screen , no sound , press power button was the only thing to do.

i went for the gpu drivers , updated them , os drivers windows vista x64 updated aswell , there are some drivers that driver robot say that could be updated but i dont think they are the source of the problem.

Then i noticed that the case is quite small for a desktop and it just have a small extractor fan , appart of gpu fan , so i opened and keep it open and also i took off 2 g of ram ( i read too much ram can be a problem since my psu is only 350w Foxconn ISO-450PP 350w PSU ) and now it can play for few of hours without freeze but then freezes and then keeps doing it every few minutes. ( so i have to stop completely )

i read in some user reviews that apparently is a problem with the motherboard (Intel DG45ID mainboard) design and pci express gpu that produces over heating , but i think with the case open that problem should be fix... Read more

I built a computer about five months ago and since then I have been trying to figure out why it freezes when I play games. Here are the specs:

E8400, 8600GT 512 MB, 4 GB RAM, 650w psu, Asus P5K mobo, Windows XP. Don't really know what else to add.

I have tried many games and they all have freezing problems. I can play the games for a short period but eventually it will freeze up during gameplay, at which point the sound loops and I must restart the computer. I checked the ram using memtest86 with no issues.

I don't think overheating is the issue. Here are the temps I observed with Everest following a freeze up:

GPU: 57c Mobo: 37c HDD: 36c

That sounds good right? From what I've read elsewhere those are relatively cool temperatures.

I have the latest GPU driver from the manufacturer, and I have tried switching from on-board sound to a sound card but to no avail. I'm inclined to believe that it's a problem with the video card, since occasionally there are also graphical glitches when a game actually works, but alt-tabing out and back in usually corrects the problem.

This issue has been especially frustrating considering I originally built this machine to be used for gaming. Everything else works fine, but when I enter a game I have only managed maybe 30 minutes max gameplay before a freeze.

Any ideas?

Sometimes old games have a problem on newer systems. Right click on the shortcut to the games and goto properties. There should be a tab that says compatibility. Click on that and run it as XP.

If that fails you could try the following. Upgrade to sp2. update you graphics card drivers. Install the physx driver. Let us know how that goes.

System specs:

P4, 1.7 Ghz.
768 RAM
Radeon 9000 V-card
Soyo P4X400 Ultra Mobo

I've tried the following to fix it, but it didn't work:

- Updated drivers
- Changed RAM
- New CPU ventilator
- New HDD
- Opened the case for cooling

I have four fans in my system, plus a V-card fan.

Question: games freeze

hello evryone,
for a few months now, games freeze randomly while i play. when they freeze, small squares on the screen change places (it's awkward to explain). after few seconds they return to their place, but i have to reboot anyway. i remember it first happened when i was playing crysis (first one) few months ago, and i didn't change anything then. i meet the minimum requirments of all the games.

for some time, sometimes i got the error "The nv4_disp display driver has stopped working normally". i manually rebooted in safe mode, logged in as administrator and deleted every last file beggining with "nv" in c/windows/system32. then installed the newest driver, and i didn't get this error since.

when i looked in the event viewer, this error is listed around the time of the freeze:
source: Service Control Manager, category: none, type:error, event ID: 7023,
The SSHNAS service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at

i've also ran combo fix, the log is attached.

i've reinstalled and updated my drivers, and replaced the PSU, so that shouldn't be the problem. neither my GPU nor any of my cpu cores get over 60 degrees (celcius).

I upgraded my Motherboard, Ram, CPU. When I run a game, it will run completly smoothly. However, it always freeze in the middle of the game. It might take 5mins then 30mins. I even played for 1h long before freezing on time. I tried running in Graphics minimum, it froze after 5mins. When I say freeze, I mean.. image freeze, no sound, no hd. I have to completly reset everytime. Here's my spec:

A8V Deluxe -new
AMD 64bit 3500+ -new
2x 512mb DRR400 -new
Radeon 9600 Pro (had it on my old build)
Realtek enhance integrated audio -new
300Watt Power supply
I run WinXP SP2

At first, I thought my drivers would be the problem. I have the last Catalyst driver. I downloaded the last VIA chipset driver and the last realtek driver. I updated them but.. still don't work. After that, I thought it could be some kind of Graphic card config error. So I went on ATI Website and putted the optimal bios settings they were saying. (Pnp OS, AGP voltage 1.6v, 128mo aperture size...) I also tried reducing AGP speed to 4x with no fastwrite and combinating write and all. But still didn'T work. I tried changing the VIA driver for microsoft AGP drivers.. but didn't work. I then thought it might be due to overheating. After a reset I checked in the bios for my temperature probe. CPU 36 celcius (93 farenheit), Motherboard 26 (79 farenheit) celcius. That's quite good. I then thought it might be my integrated sound card. So I desactivated it and putted my Sound Blaster live 5... Read more

All right, I have two desktop computers, one's connected to the Internet through wireless and the other one's directly connected to the router via Ethernet.

Whenever I try to play a LAN game between the computers with several 3D shooters, during the game there's several 3-second freezes, and then eventually the game freezes completely.

These freeze-ups are getting very frustrating. The problem has to be with my network setup. Do you think you could help me with this problem?

how often does it happen and do you know how to use the ping utility?
Also, just cause you are playing with LAN machines doesn't mean you are having a LAN game. You could be connecting online through a game server so all data is relayed through there then back to you. When you set the game up do you actually choose "LAN Game" or something similar when hosting the game?

It never crashes straight away it ranges from about 5 minutes in to about an hour but it always crashes.

I dont think its my power supply because i had it replaced last week and it hasnt changed anything, i also downloaded a core temparature program and it said that my idle temp was about 35 degrees and when i was in the game it was about 48. I took some of the case off aswell and cleaned some off the dust.
Ive updated all my video card drivers also but it didnt help.

Try running Memtest86. Also another possible issue could be your HDD but will see what Memtest finds.

Download the pre-built version of Memtest86 (Link Below) and burn it onto a CD using ISO Recorder (Link Below) after this boot off the CD and start the test going and let it run for 3-5 hours (Minimum of 7 Passes) or Overnight which is best.

Recently my comp has been freezing while playing games. I have an Athlon XP 3200 with 512MB of RAM and an integrated graphics card! I've been playing Rome Total War for nearly 6 months without any problems. And if anybody is familiar with the game i can play it on huge settings without any problems so long as everything else is turned down. However about 10-20 minutes into the game now it freezes forcing me to restart my comp. I've also tried other games (Galactic Civ 2, Civ 3 and Civ 2) but the same thing happens. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Freeze During Games

I would initially try reinstalling the graphics card driver and goto START RUN and type DXDIAG and see if theres any problems there. If the problems appear after 10-20 minutes with all games then I would also consider overheating as a possability and would check all the fans are ok.

whenever i try to play a game such as unreal tournyment the game freezes after about 5 seconds. this happens on numerous other games too. i run a amd k6-2 500 with a prophet 2 mx anyone help please

Answer:games freeze up

Games freezing on pc's using AMD's is very common. AMD's tend to overheat which will cause your system to freeze. You could check the core voltage in the BIOS Setup and see if it's set right but I don't know what it's supposed to be set to. If that doesn't help try adding an extra cooling fan or two inside the case. I saw on another message board where a person said he had to add 5 extra fans before his AMD would stay cool enough so that he could play games with it without it freezing up. But you probably won't have to add that many. Those are the only fixes i've ever seen for freezing problems with AMD's. I would suggest that the next time you buy a computer get one with an Intel chip and you won't have this problem.

I forgot to mention that it's also possible that there's some problem with the video card but overheating is more likely.

After about 30 minutes of play on BF2 and 15 on NWN, my computer completely freezes and I have to do a hard reset. On NWN2, I notice that it skips a few times leading up to the crash.

I bought NWN2 on Oct 31 and played it through once without a problem. I only started having problems the last week.

Also, I recently cleaned my case of dust, but the game was working fine after than. Another note: My case is alot quieter now than it used to be.

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: I haven't tried any other games.

Question: Games freeze...

Lately some of my games (Black and White, Baldur's Gate) freeze up at random points in the game. Sometimes I can play for an hour, sometimes it stops in a few minutes. I already tried exiting all background programs and checking for any driver problems. I'm running Win98, 1 ghz, 128 MB RAM.

Thanks for any help ^^

Question: Games freeze

I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem. Some of my games freeze after playing for a short period, specifically Far Cry, Quake 4, Battlefield 1942 and Battle for Middle Earth 1 & 2. I installed a 512MB Radeon 1650 Pro a little while back. At the time I was running a Vista Home Premium upgrade, and I thought that maybe Vista was the problem. So, I uninstalled Vista and went back to using XP. It hasn't solved anything. I also can't remember if the problem started after I had put the new card in. I have all the latest XP drivers for everything. I even tried using an earlier version of the ATI drivers, but no luck.

Hi all,

I?ve been playing on my computer for a while and have noticed that whenever I play my games, my computer will freeze and hang up after about a couple minutes of playing into the game. The screen will freeze and whatever sound was playing will loop in the background. I cannot ctrl alt del out of the game and my computer requires a hard restart whenever this happens. I have been looking on some forums about this problem with games freezing and supposedly the fix was swapping the different RAM modules. I tried doing that but it still keeps freezing after playing for a bit. I then used Riva Tuner to turn up the fan on my graphics card to 100% but that did not help either. I have the latest drivers for Vista x64 too. I also tried playing the games in Windows XP (I am running both Vista and XP on my system) but the same thing happens. I then started to think if the 500W power supply was too low so we got a new 650W PSU, but haven?t put it in yet. Any suggestions?

Here are my specs:

Vista Ultimate 64-bit and Windows XP w/ SP3
Motherboard: ECS GF7050VT-M
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9450 @ 2.66GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM Corsair Dominator
Video Card: XFX NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+
Hard Drive: 500 GB Western Digital With Green Technology

Games I play that freeze: COD4, CODWaW, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, Far Cry 2, Mass Effect, Brothers in Arms: HH

Please Help!! Thanks!!

Answer:Can Someone Tell Me Why My Games Freeze on My PC?

How are all the fans and heatsinks looking? Clean and free of dust and any blockage? Are they all running? That 9800GTX+ gets HOT HOT HOT and would likely cause a freeze like that if overheated. A simple blasting with canned air may solve your problems. If not, possibly the PSU, but start simple and work your way up.

Let us know what ya find.

The games I tried are Bioshock, Call of Duty 4, Crysis, Two Worlds, Halflife 2, Command and Conquer 3 etc, Any ideas?

Answer:My Games freeze up

Check to ensure your heatsink is properly seated. If your processor overheats (when it is doing a lot of calculating) it will lockup your system. Same deal with your video card, ensure the fans are working properly and any heatsinks are snug.

If your OS works fine, but when you try some highly taxing applications/games, then i feel it is a heat issue, espeically when you are trying multiple applications/games.

ok, my computer freezes up in games made in about 1999 and onwards (mostly fine with fallout, but not fallout tactics...), especially in menus, but is fine in the demos of half-life 2 and doom 3. It's done this ever since I bought it. it runs fine until suddenly freezing, then usually beeping and going black after a while. sound begins to loop. It's a pentium 4 2.0 ghz, 512 mb RAM, geforce 4 mx 440, running XP home edition. I've tried updating the graphics drivers but that's made no difference. it would be a perfectly decent machine if it would only work! OH THE HUMANITY! I don't know that much about making these things work. Should I update the motherboard or something? I'm terrified of doing anything to the BIOS...

Flash Bang!!!

Welcome to TechSpot!

I still get the heebee geebee's
flashing the's really pretty simple,
just be patient and don't turn any power to
comp off during the flash cycle.
This may be what you need to do,
though you may want to look into a newer
video card before flashing your bios...also
make certain the new bios applies to your problem,
don't flash it unless you have to!!!

Hello,Some time ago I brought my PC to a technician because it would not boot at all, when I pressed the power button the components turned on but nothing was actually displayed on my screen. He told me the motherboard was shorting because I had badly installed it in my case, and my CPU wasn't correctly installed either. After I installed it back home I decided to make a fresh start and reinstalled windows. Everything was fine until I noticed my computer froze once or maybe twice when I was installing some programs, I didn't mind at the time, but since I installed some games I noticed my computer was freezing after a few minutes in game.I started looking for fixes and found this: I tried:-Updating my drivers: everything is up to date, even my BIOS.-Running a memory check: no errors.-Resetting my virtual memory: nothing.-Checked my hard drives: no errors.-Running a system file checker: everything is fine.-Disabling C-states: actually worsened the situation, I couldn't get to my OS (maybe froze between the BIOS loading thingy and the OS showing).I came to the conclusion that my hardware was actually at fault, but I can't be sure as when I monitor my hardware with HWMonitor I can't see anything suspicious: temperatures are normal, fans are spinning etc. But my pc keeps freezing (and I mean freezing, no shutting down, no reboot, just my screen displaying the same fr... Hello, fellow netizens and Windows 7 users!

My family is having a spot of bother with one of their computers. It's a Compaq 505B MT running Windows 7, of course; it has 2GB of RAM, an AMD Athlon 2 X2, and an NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE GPU. You can find full specs for this computer here.

Anyway, if someone plays Minecraft on it, the game will occasionally freeze for about 5-10 seconds at a time starting after the first 5 minutes of gameplay, during which it runs smoothly, until after maybe 20 minutes it will lock up completely, and since I am a rather impatient person, I always give the stupid thing a hard shutdown after waiting only 5 minutes. Then, when I try to boot it up again, Windows just stops at that pointless screen where the glowing dots spin around to form the Windows logo (the good old one. ) The last time this happened my dad turned it on for me just before going to bed, and by morning, it had made absolutely no progress after the dots formed the Windows logo. I thought it would be a good idea to clear its CMOS, which made it work that time. However, it happened again just today, and it said something about that excuse for a graphics driver that nVidia gives us failing on me. I don't have access to it right now, but I will probably be able to post the message in a little while.

Thanks in advance, amigos, any help is well appreciated.

P.S. Should I consider getting an alternative driver? Open-source perhaps? Like this guy?

P.P.S. BTW, do... Read more

Hello, I hope someone can suggest a fix for this problem, I am running windows 7 on NVidia GeForce 8500 GT. The problem is that Windows randomly freezes when I play any type of media, whether I used Media Player or any other media player software or when I run ProgDVB or DVBdream, some times it will run for few hours before it freezes and other times it will run for minutes then it freezes, freezing here is complete lock and I have to turn the pc off then on again.

I installed the latest NVidia driver dated 17 August 2009, but the problem remains.

Any input is appreciated.

Answer:Windows Freeze when playing any media

Lockups are difficult to troubleshoot in a deterministic manner.

A good starting point is to update your BIOS and all of your drivers to the latest available versions, not just the video. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling your antivirus and any 3rd-party firewalls as a test (disabling them is not enough).
