Make Record in "Programs and Features" for Programs With No Installer?

Question: Make Record in "Programs and Features" for Programs With No Installer?

I'm migrating to a new PC today (this is posted from the new one), and I'm determined to keep it more organized than my last one. I use a lot of opensource software, much of which doesn't have an installer, it's just copied to wherever you want it and shortcuts made manually. This is a problem when I'm trying to remember what's there.

Is there a way to create a record in "Programs and Features" for this software? I can create an uninstall command script for each one if it requires an uninstaller to be listed here, or whatever needs to be done. I just don't know how this part of Windows 7 works.

EDIT: I just found this. I'm still reading, but it looks like what I need.

Preferred Solution: Make Record in "Programs and Features" for Programs With No Installer?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Make Record in "Programs and Features" for Programs With No Installer?

Hi 4evrplan, welcome to the Seven Forums.

As far as I know it is not possible to manually add portable applications to Programs and Features list.

I have solved this simply by creating a folder called Portable Apps on C:\Program Files, adding all portable apps here in their own subfolders. A folder listing of this folder = a list of my portable apps, backing up all portable apps for instance before reinstalling Windows I simply just need to copy this one folder with its subfolders.

Recently, I noticed that when I click the "Uninstall or change a Program" button, "Apps and Features" in the Settings window opens rather than the "Programs and Features" window it always was. I preferred that window as it showed more programs and gave more details. Is there a way to make the "Programs and Features" window open instead? Or is this result of an update?

Answer:"Uninstall or change a Program" doesn't open "Programs and Features"

What I use is the familiar Control Panel. I put Control in the Search box and click the resultant Control Panel item. Once it is open I right-click its icon on the Taskbar and choose Pin to Taskbar, always there for me to make a choice. I use it nearly every day.

Hi I use Vista64 SP1 on my HP HDX Dragon laptop

Recently I had a problem with Nvidia drivers and I used CCleaner to remove some leftovers from the registry - Maybe that is that is cause of the following problem:

In "Programs and Features" several programs in the list report a wrong size (for example 63GB instead than 1GB) and a wrong installatio date (one is supposed to have been installed in 2042) -

I also have some icon problem, some icons are mismatched in that list (but that may not be related because it happened in the past and I fixed it by using a small program called rebuildIcons.exe.

What can Ii do to fix all that?

Thanks

I recently had a virus problem and was forced to do a full system restore about 2 weeks ago, I had no problems after doing this, but as this is a shared computer and is sometimes connected to the internet I again have problems.

I have done several virus scans, and nothing has been able to find a problem with anything.
Everytime I open programs and features from the control panel Windows Explorer stops working, I also get an assortment of error messages such as rundll32.exe closing and a runtime error "204 at 02DF24C4"

rundll32.exe also closes randomly when using IE (the only browser) and it closed several times when I was signing up to the forum.

I'm pretty useless with troubleshooting, so I'm looking for a good simple plan of action which doesn't require a reset to the factory defaults.

Thanks in advance

Hi, I have something listed as "Connect" in Programs and Features that will not uninstall. I tried looking for it in the uninstall parts of the registry for 64bit, but it does not appear to be listed, I tried the Microsoft Cleanup utility and also CCleaner.

The item is not selectable in Programs and Features and has no entry in any of its columns other than the Name column. The only program that seems to be able to recognize it is CCleaner but using "Delete Entry" returns the message "Cannot delete MSI Installer".

I have no idea what the application is, I'm guessing its part of some installer, it could be iTunes related as I un-installed iTunes today after it crashed my PC repeatedly.

My soundcard is RealTek on an eVGA 780i motherboard.

thats a pretty interesting question
it depends though
pretty much you have to enable stereo mix

then use any recording app (windows includes one called sound recorder or you can try windows movie maker (havent checked the new one but the old vista could record audio shouldnt be a problem) to record audio

As far as I can tell, the "Programs and Features" list is hard coded, depending on which version of Vista you have.

Is there any particular reason you need to know in which "folder" it is stored?

I usually have many programs installed on my system, and like to keep them very well organized, so I create folders for "Media Tools", "Performance Tools", "Online Tools", "Security" and "General Tools". It makes it a lot easier to find what I need to open.

But I have always had to put in a little bit of extra effort when I begin to notice that the Start menu folders in my user profile (under Appdata\Local\<etc.>) don't match the ones in the "All Users" folders, which live in the "ProgramData" folder.

Is there a simple way to do this? I thought if perhaps I could make one set of those folders some kind of a symbolic link to the other, that might solve the problem, but I made a huge mess of things when I tested this.

BTW, this is caused because some programs install automatically just for the user that is logged in, and others install for "all users"... some setup programs ask which you'd prefer, but most don't... maybe if I could just always be sure to run setup in that "all users" mode the problem wouldn't exist...

Any ideas?

Hi, all:

After about a week with Win10 on this OEM box, a few annoyances continue to nag.

First, despite having set Adobe Acrobat 11 (latest, fully licensed version) as the default program for PDF files (confirmed directly in Control Panel, in Settings and in File Associations), I periodically receive notifications from Windows that a "problem with an app" has led to "default being reset" to Edge (or another M$ default app).

There have been several like this (Firefox getting switched to IE, etc.).
I reset back to *my* chosen defaults, apparently successfully.

A few days later, randomly, Windows sets them back again.

Is there any way to beat Windows into submission to get my *my* settings for default programs and file associations to stick??

Thanks,
MM

Answer:Default programs repeatedly reset to "MS" programs/apps

I don't know the answer, but I'm seeing the same problem on my old laptop which I upgraded from Windows 8.1 a week ago.

I've reinstalled XP and some icons are missing from the "Start"/"all programs" menu. Both Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are missing. I was able to locate them using "search" then open and pin to start menu. (The search function displays i.e. shortcuts for "administrator", "guest" and the other user, but not for me. The icons do display on the "all programs" list for the other user). Any suggestions as to how to get them back on the "all programs" menu?

Thanks,

Answer:Programs missing from "all programs" list after repair-reinstall

Sounds like the reinstallation failed. There may be other problems as well. The repair should never be done until the system is perfectly clean of viruses and malware.

I'd suggest scanning to be absolutely sure the machine is clean, turn off anti-virus, firewalls, and any anti-malware applications, and trying to repair again.

Ok I have searched and searched for a solution to this common problem in Windows XP.

The "Recommended Programs" list that appears when you select "Open With" after right clicking a file, html in my case, is cluttered with programs I don't use.

The common suggestion is to do a regedit as shown below -

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\FileExts\.extension\OpenWithList

However I still have some items that show up in the Open With list that were never found in the registry. To be specific they are some OpenOffice programs that opened an html file at one time. That is how they got on the list, I think they are shell extensions or something like that. I guess that is why I am unable to locate them with the regedit method.

Is there freeware utility that can clean these out in XP?
I found one called "Unassociate file types" for Vista but it does not work for me.

Answer:Remove Items From "Open With" > "Recommend Programs" List

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I have been using Z-Uninstall and CCleaner for a long time now. I ran the registry cleaner from within CCleaner and Glary just yesterday.

The recommended programs I want removed from the list have not been uninstalled from the PC. They were accidentally used at one time to open an html file thus the reason they made it to the list. I have cleaned out some others by using regedit, but these OpenOffice apps are not visible in the registry. They are shell extensions I think.

I am looking for a utility like "Unassociate file types" that will work on XP.
Any suggestions?

firstly only edit the registry if you are comfortable with it as it can cause all sorts of problems, secondly allways make backups before making any changes

Remove Programs from the Add/Remove Programs List (All Windows) Popular

Windows compatible programs must include an uninstall program, sometimes though the program may get removed but the entry in Add/Remove programs does not. This tweak allows you to manually remove any orphaned entries.

Open your registry and find the key below. Under this key will be a number of sub-keys, each representing an installed application.

To see which application each sub-key represents, open it and there should be at least two values 'DisplayName' and 'UninstallString'. 'DisplayName' is the name used in the Add/Remove programs list and 'UninstallString' is the program used to uninstall the application.

To remove a program from the list you can simply highlight and delete the sub-key representing that program.

How can a program that is not even present on my C-drive (but once was) appear in the control panel when I open "Add or Remove Programs"? My registry is somehow holding onto this old program even though it does not really exist on my C-drive. I am trying to reinstall the program properly but when I finish the installation, Windows XP will not let me open it! It says my file path is invalid, apparently a reference to the "ghost version" of the program that I cannot get rid of! So my question is: how can I get my registry to realize that the program is GONE so that I can reinstall it successfully? Thanks for any help.

Answer:Uninstalling "Ghost Programs" or programs that do not really exist.

That sometimes has occured with me, but usually when I try to uninstall the program through the control panel Uninstall function, it fails and them asks if I want to remove the program from the list.
If it does not I have one or two "tweak" programs that can do it for me, or as a last resort I use the Microsoft Utility.

I do not mean the Search on the right pane.

I do use "all programs auto expander" to solve the annoyance of always clicking on the All programs to get the folders to show, but it would be superior to also get rid of that line all together. Or is this another futile request as it is to get rid of that equally useless Explorer bar??

Answer:Can the "All Programs/Back" & "Search" entries be removed?

The search bar is so very useful in 7, but to each his own. Try this:

Start> In search box (ironic, huh?) type Turn Windows Features On or Off> When the list loads, uncheck Windows Search> OK

For All Programs, this also applies to 7

It's been a month since my laptop gone wrong. All programs doesn't run properly, and stop working many times. Media Player, Office, Internet explorer, all stop working frequently, and I have to wait ten second until five minutes to continue my work.

Two days ago I noticed that when I downloaded windows update, the updates wasn't saved in OS folder like it used to be. New folders named like "1ee10074..." appeared in my hard disk. I realized that the problems begin when I found new folder like this in my hard disk, and now the problems is getting worst after updates. I thought my "OS" was full, but the indicator say "11.8 GB free of 58.5 GB".

I can't delete or move the folder without permission, and try to copy them to "OS". Now each time I open a file, two windows are opened, one is my opened file and the other is blank window.

I don't have enough knowledge about computer. Can anyone help me, please?

Answer:How to fix "not responding" problem in all programs and "lost updates"

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That temp file that you mentioned, is it in the root of the system drive?
In other words is it located here: C:\1ee10074....

If that is where it is, then it could be from a .NET update. They do not always remove that randomly named folder. Don't delete it just yet, go inside of it (say continue to the permissions security pop ups). If you find several folders with 4 numbers for the name, then it is probably from an update. Those numbered folders are for different languages. You can delete the folder if you want or just leave it. The folder is not the cause of your problems.

I really don't like the term "All Apps" on the new Start menu. I would like to put it back to "All Programs". Does anyone have any idea if this can be changed?

I don't use "apps". I'm not a mobile device user; I have a custom-built tower and I use PROGRAMS. I'm not talking about those simple little ones in the Windows store. I'm talking about Office Professional, WordPerfect Office, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Expression Web, Microsoft SQL Server, and others, as well as custom business software. Besides, I am also a longtime IT person (30+ years) and I used to write code, before becoming a sysadmin for the company I work for. We were PROGRAMMERS. We did NOT write "apps". I know I'm nit-picking, but if anyone has any ideas on this, I really would like to know.

I cannot delete one of two anti-virus programs (conflicting) because the "All Programs" with the green arrow does not appear at the bottom of the Start menu.

I do not know how to get it back and I can't get to any of the installed programs...help!

Answer:Cannot see "All Programs" in the "Start" menu!

If 'run' is available, click on it. In the box type msconfig then press the enter key.
When the program comes up, pick the startp tab. Under that tab is a list of programs
that start when the computer boots. Note the check boxes at the left. Uncheck your virus programs and exit. Reboot and see if you get your programs button back.
To uninstall, you can try using the control panel. In it, pick add/remove programs. There, click on the antivirus program you want to uninstall and tell it to uninstall.
If that don't work, you may have to restart your computer in the Safe Mode and remove it from there.

Hope this helps.

Have a new computer which runs Windows XP 2005, and it's been a bit of a rough road.

Lately when I start up the computer, the "Windows Installer" appears every time. "Please wait while Windows configures Your Sonic Update Manager." The next window that appears is Sonic Update Manager, and it says, "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert 'Sonic Update Manager' disk and click OK." At the bottom of this same window is 'Use Source: 1'.

When I click "OK" or "cancel," a message appears, "The path '1' cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'UM.MSI' in a folder from which you can install the product Sonic UPdate Manager."

If I continue to click 'cancel,' it eventually all goes away. But it's annoying and I'd like to set things straight. How do I get this to go away???

I looked on my original invoice from Dell, and yes, they did install Sonic, but I don't have a CD for it. It may also help for you to know that this began after my ten-year-old son had me install Editing Software powered by Muvee for his Vidster video camera from Mattel. Could that have something to do with it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Why do "Windows Installer" and "Sonic Update Manager" keep popping up?

Click start then run, type msconfig then press enter and click on the startup tab.

See if you have these processes listed "issch" and "isuspm". If so, uncheck them, click apply and restart the computer.

Hello, I recently had to move a couple XP Pro computers around and change their workgroup / workstation "Computer name". And also had to change my personal admin user account name on each computer to match the new computer workstation name.. But now my "Run as" feature and remote desktop feature don’t work properly...don’t understand...read ahead...

OK, so lets say when I originally set up this one dell computer right out of the box, I set it up with the workgroup name being WS999 and my personal admin user account name was 999 on that computer. Then I moved that computer and changed its workgroup computer name to WS700, and then renamed my personal admin user account to 700 to match…for my own personal preference.

But now when I go to use the "Run as" feature (desktop icon, shift + right click, “Run as...”) in order to run a program with admin privileges through my admin account while logged on in a limited user account, it wants the original admin user name of 999 and not my NEW personal admin user account 700. For me to run the program as an admin, I have to put in the original admin user account name of 999 as the user for it to work. The same thing happens when I try to use remote desktop on the XP computers I have changed the workstation ID and admin user account name on.

I know I could use the built in MASTER admin account, but I don’t like too from previous problems and a super long PW All I did was go to “my computer” proper... Read more

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove Snap.do and some other unwanted programs.  I managed to get them off, I beleive.  I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me Snap.do was back.  I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked.  Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and Snap.do wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.
I ran malware bytes and nothing too bad was found.  I ran Superantispyware and it reported regcleaner pro, Advanced Sysrem Protector and AppsHat Mobile Apps were installed.  I let the Super antispyware try to remove them and also cleaned out some tracking cookies.  I cehcked programs and the 3 weren't there.  Re-running Super antispyware however keeps reporting they're in my system.
Any ideas?  Was my original removal not successful?  Can these apps hide?

Why is it that some "programs" listed in the "uninstall/change" list don't show up under "all programs" or when I do a search at the start button search box?  One is visual c ++  Isn't this a programming language?  Others appear to be not of a programming nature.   I don't know what they are because I can't find them and don't know if they are essential or not.

Answer:programs not listed under "all programs"

Yes, that's normal behavior. The all programs link on the start menu opens up a list of shortcuts to a number of programs. If you want to, you can edit that list to have more or less programs on it. You can change the names of the shortcuts and the order in which they appear. In other words, the all programs is not really a direct map into all the programs found in the programs directory. When a program is installed it creates a shortcut for itself and places it in the list of the selected user, or perhaps all users.Which means that you could edit each user's list of programs. So that some users will not even see the programs available. And you can even make shortcuts and put them in the list of programs, and the shortcuts could be something other than real programs. And so forth that all non-blah blah blah.In short, it's only a list of shortcuts.

Hi
I just got a new computer and I'm reinstalling all my software. it defaults to installing it into the folder Program Files x86. I've so far installed itunes and Quicken, but neither of them are showing up in the "all programs" menu on the start tab as they did in XP. I don't want to have to figure out how to make this happen every time I install something new, so how can I get windows to put my programs in this place so I can see all of them at once? Also, in XP there were folders for programs, and now they are all lumped together in one big mess. How do you organize this mess?

Answer:Programs not showing in "all programs"

Hello Mingum, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Usually when you install a program, it may have an option to select to create a "Start Menu shortcut" or not. If selected, it will create a shortcut in the Start Menu for that program during installation.

If not, then you could also manually create a shortcut from the program's exe file in it's folder in the Program Files (x86) folder, and place it in the Start Menu to use. The tutorial below can help show you how to do this.

Start Menu All Programs - Add or Delete Shortcuts

Hope this helps,

I have Windows 7 Prof x64.

My question is, when displaing all software installed and choosing more columns of information to display, they don't stay. For example, choosing Location column. Getting out of the installed programs list and then returning to it, the Location column is gone.

Is there some what to get the columns to be persistent?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Question about Windows 7 Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

The Programs and Features listing is shown to you by the Explorer app. Each time that you open/close the Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a folder (or a special view/list like the Programs and Features listing), Explorer tries to write info to the registry about how Explorer was showing you that folder. Windows (file) Explorer tries to write this "how to display a folder" info at other times besides just closing an Explorer window, but I'll not go into all of that.

Microsoft has not solved the problem that happens when these places in the registry get too big. When this happens, you may see the problem that you are experiencing - that of no longer being able to store the layout/view/column width/column selection/... info in the registry.

Below is video that I made showing registry keys being made. (I'm not suggesting that you mess with the registry.) Notice that new keys are made when visiting the folder named Temp. Deleting this Temp folder does not remove those registry keys. If you close Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a compressed folder (a ZIP file), the Explorer app tries to make keys so that it can remember how it last showed you that folder. If you delete or move that ZIP folder to another location, the original registry keys remain. So you can see how this area of the registry can fill up.

edit: I had to make this video again. I hope that I covered all of the original points.

One solution is to remove all of the entries/keys in the areas of ... Read more

I recently opened up my uninstall list and a lot of my programs are missing i tried restoring my computer to before i downloaded quick time (which i think is what the issue was) but the restore came up with an error 0xc0000022 saying it failed to restore, i tried an sfc scan and it came up with something being corrupt that would be fixed on restart, i restarted and tried to restore again but it still did not work.

I have uninstalled quick-time already but the problem is still there, also my antivirus picked up root-kit in hamachi so i uninstalled that and did a full system scan from boot with avast, i haven't tried restoring again in case i lose any progress or the virus is restored.

So basically i have two problems: Programs missing from my programs and features list, and System restore not working 0xc0000022

I know i should do something with the CBS log to check but ill leave that for you guys to decide, thanks for the help.

Answer:programs missing from programs and features, recovery failed 0xc000002

Download and run Revo Uninstaller for the missing programs.

As far as your rootkit, simply removing the program doesn't remove the malware. Run a scan with Malwarebytes anti-Rootkit, then run Malwarebytes standard and then run Eusing to clean up the entry points of your virus.

Also, go into your AppData directory and clean out all the Temp files in there. Delete them for all user accounts on the machine:

C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Local\Temp for example.

A family member was tricked in to downloading and installing some stuff from the Internet on to a laptop that has Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit with Media Center. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff that was installed or if these problems existed earlier.

In Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, not all installed programs are listed. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letters Mi.. or Mo.. Only 14 programs are listed. In Start menu, All Programs, I think some programs are missing. The list seems unusually short. The laptop has a Win 7 style Start menu because IObit's Start Menu 8 program is installed. In Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, there were no shortcuts to the tools. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date but that didn't bring back the missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues.

I guess the missing programs could be the result of malware. I don't remember exactly what I removed. I only used the free version of MBAM to clean up. I tried restoring everything MBAM quarantined but that didn't help. I requarantined the stuff. It was mostly, if not all, PUPs.

Any ideas for bringing back the programs that should be in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu?

Answer:Missing some Programs in Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) Menu

I gave up. I restored the operating system and reinstalled everything. No problems now so I guess the problems of missing programs and BitDefender not working was caused by the malware/PUPs- a buggy installer.

You mention Classic Shell in the title. Is this what you are trying to do? In Classic Shell settings, remove the Administrative Tools entry. The Control Panel entry will still show Administrative Tools as the top entry.

So I have a trojan or virus in c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe (kbyte file size and dates are wrong). Cannot delete unless safe mode is on, replaced with new version from XP CD sp2 with "expand \i386\rundll32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe

but at startup file is agained back to virus/trojan.

Ran HJT, Kaspersky log and onliner scans as well as downloads of AdwareAlert
RegCure XoftSpySE etc...

all report that my "normal" tools like, VNC, VMWare etc are suspect but these are clean installs from CD.

thanks,

I was wondering if it were possible while performing a new installation of Windows to not only change the default location of your "User Account " folders but also to change the default location of your "Programs Files and Program Files (x86)" folders? If so please point me in the right direction. Many thanks in advance.

Hiya

Don't know if this is malware, but I'm a bit frustrated.

Many reports have been out about Mozilla Firefox download hangs (with this new version 2.0.0.6), and I've exhausted Mozilla's help (deleting logs, .rdf, clearing / clean install etc).

Also, since installing this mozilla version (maybe just coincidence) ALL of my downloads "hang" and not necessarily a half-way, 1/4 or 3/4 way through..even small files like 2.4 megs (school documents) all the way to 200+meg video-game movie files etc.

It all hangs, I can't restart / redownload (like rehashing / starting up from the last download spot).

Just downloaded / isntalled the new IE version 7. ... 11 to see if It would install (as I had an older version) and nothing.

Bit comet Seems like it hangs, but, its hard to tell with that many connections.

Neither Firefox nor Internet explorer will start and the error I'm getting is "The procedure entry point SetupDiDestroyDeviceInfoList could not be located in the dynamic link library SETUPAPI.dll". I'm currently on Safari. Also, my AIM and other programs shut down as soon as they start. When I open World of Warcraft it says something about a "trojan-downloader" being on my computer, but I can't get to that point because WoW won't open anymore either. scans reveal nothing, but every so often Norton tells me that a trojan horse has been found and deleted.

Thank you very much.

Hi folks.

First off, thanks in advance to anyone tring to help me with this. I really appreciate it. I've looked at other examples here of this "0xc0150004" problem, but they all seem pretty machine specific. So here's my situation:

I had a split-second power outage yesterday and after my computer re-booted, Outlook.exe, Reader_sl.exe, Groovemonitor.exe, and Onenotem.exe, all "failed to initialize properly (0xc000009c)". So I ran chkdsk and that seemed to fix it for a few hours. But all of a sudden, when trying to open Outlook, I got the same message, only this time the error code was "0xc0000103". So I ran chkdsk again and when my computer re-booted this time, all the same stuff (Outlook.exe, Reader_sl.exe, etc...) "failed to initialize properly", only this time the error code was different yet again (0xc0150004).

Here's my HJT log:

Hi everyone -

Since the new year, I have observed in a few systems including the one I use most frequently, that a right-click on any program or file brought up in the start menu brings up only one selection - "Properties". And when selected, "Properties" brings up the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" screen - just as if I were clicking on the Quick Task bar itself and selecting Properties.

I haven't really gotten into this yet and before I do, I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced anything like this or knows what may be the underlying cause.

All virus and malware scans are clean; DSS incorporting HiJackThis are free and clear of debris.

Thank you. . .

JC

Answer:Right-click Start menu programs only brings up "properties" option

Hello mate i had the exact same problem!

If you open the registry editor and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

There you should find a key called "NoChangeStartMenu".
Make sure the value of this is set to 0 and if not change it.

Also check here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

You should find the same key "NoChangeStartMenu"
And make sure this is also set to 0.

Restart your computer and your problem should be solved.

If anyone has read the May 2011 issue of "Consumer Reports", there was an article on free/paid antivirus programs.

Avira AntiVir was on top for the free versions.

Microsoft Security Essentials placed 4th below Avira AntiVir, AVG 2011, and Avast, but it placed 1st for not displaying false positives.

BitDefender was on top for the paid version.

McAfee placed near the bottom of the list.

Hello once again TSF! I have been helped a lot by you guys before! Lets see if you can help me again! :)

So, I hardly reboot/shutdown my computer, but i recently cleaned it up and removed some apps i no longer use. All went well.

However, when i went to restart my computer (to finalize uninstall) it got hung up on the "Windows is waiting for programs to close" and what do ya know the list was empty

So I sat and waited about 20 minutes, then i noticed i couldnt click anything and nothing responded but the mouse moving and the power button. HDD light was out too

So i held power button to force shut down, worked. Started up and asked if i wanted to boot to safe mode etc. I selected boot normally. It booted up just fine everything is still working but i can't shut down or restart AT ALL.

I even tried the command in CMD to see if i could get it to shutdown that way using

shutdown /f

and the same thing happened, it appeared to be shutting down then just hang there, ( no waiting dialog as /f does not show that ) So i waited ten minutes, still no reboot.

I am at a loss, and Google is really not helping any either.

I need the TSF geniuses :)

Thanks guys for your time!

Answer:[ISSUE] Reboot/Shutdown freezes at "Waiting for programs to close"

It sounds like one of the deleted apps carried an important .dll with it. You can try either a System Restore and use a process of elimination or see if System File Checker straightens things out.

Hey everyone,

Recently, I have noticed that every time I properly shut down my laptop, I keep getting the pop up saying "Waiting for Background Program to Close."

The box doesn't even list the program that needs to close. (Can this be a virus)
Furthermore, if I wait a few seconds, it will shut down automatically, I don't need to click "Force Close"....

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer:"Waiting for Background Program to Close" shows no actual programs?!

Could be a program or service hanging. Establish a Clean Boot, run SFC /SCANNOW Command
to check system files for corruption, check the logs including Performance log for errors at shutdown, utilize System Resources to check for Solutions to problems and Generate a System Health Report, and the rest of the Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

Hello

I am desperately seeking the help of anyone who can help me. While using my computer last week (it's been off for a week now as I was on vacation) almost all the icons on my desktop turned into internet explorer links, and all the programs on my computer (including my Norton Antivirus) will not open as they all are being "opened" with internet explorer. Whenever a program is opened the message that internet explorer is no longer working pops up. This includes Microsoft Word, iTunes, some parts of my control panel etc. My computer's operating system is Vista.
I am assuming this is a virus, but I have no idea what to do about it. Can anyone out there help me?

Just a few days ago I noticed a strange problem. I was downloading a program with Firefox (latest version) and the download dialogue froze up when I opted to save the file. I thought Firefox was being buggy, so I closed it and reopened, but the problem persisted. My next step was to reboot. No luck. I ran a full virus scan with Norton, and downloaded AdAware to see if spyware could be causing a problem. I was clean. I later found that if I just wait a really long time, the dialogue box to choose the file's location eventually comes up. After this, the problem seems to be gone until I reboot. In other words, once I wait forever for the box to pop up, the next time I download something it pops up instantly like it should. I unfortunately noticed that this problem wasn't unique to firefox. I clicked to add a file to my Winamp playlist, and the same thing happened. Winamp froze and a few minutes later the Open File box popped up and everything was fine. It also happened with AIM when I tried to send a file to a friend. This problem was very annoying to google because the combination of words describing the problem comes up with irrelavent hits. I'm very computer literate but this problem confounds me. I'd appreciate any help or insight. Hijack This log available upon request.
EDIT: I'm running WINXP SP2 fully updated to my knowledge, and my computer specs are listed.

This morning I turned on the computer as usual, opened up some red bull, waiting for Windows to initialize. When it was done, I started my daily routine of turning on Teamspeak, IRC, MSN Messenger and X-Fire. First two programs worked as they should've did, but when I opened Messenger, it gave me a '0xc0000022 failed to initialize' error. I just said to myself, oh well, I'll just reinstall the damn thing and go on X-Fire first, but alas, same error, all of the sudden.

That's when I got... slightly irritated. Firefox still worked, luckily, so I went on google and filled in the error number (0xc0000022). It gave me multiple hits, all indicating to some kind of security error, or something. I tried following the instructions on some sites, to no avail Microsoft's search didn't help me either.

Then it occured to me it could be spyware, but both AdAware AND Spybot wouldn't load :/

This is the point were I got... irritated to no end. All my Games worked fine, just most apps didnt, and all of them are pretty much legal or freeware too.

Basic list of programs that don't work anymore, and there ARE more;

MSN Messenger (7.5)
X-Fire Latest version
Adaware
Spybot
Nero SmartStart
Those are the ones I checked, so there could be even more.

I've installed a fresh install of Windows XP, and the problem isn't present there, I just want to stay on this install though, since there are so many settings and registries that need to be ... Read more

I'm having trouble changing the background for the "All Programs"...button...on the Start Menu. (see attached pic) I'm trying to make it black, like the rest of the "recently used programs" list. I am using Windows Style Builder, although I am also very familiar with Res Hacker. I just need to know what images to edit. I'd also like to change the color of the "All programs" font to a light grey.

I'm also attaching the aero.msstyles file, in case one of the pictures may causing a problem.

Answer:problem changing "All programs" background for custom win7 theme

The All Programs button is located at Start Menu > Panels > Basic > MoreProgramsTab

The All Programs arrow is located at Start Menu > Panels > Basic > MoreProgramsArrow and Start Menu > Panels > Basic > MoreProgramsArrowBack

To change the text color you need to add a text color property at Start Menu > Panels > Basic > MoreProgramsTab

To add text color property to the following.
Click on Add Property
Use the drop-down menu under Type choose color under Property choose textcolor then Click OK
It always picks black as the default color click on the color
Picked the color you want and then Click OK

Look at the screenshots below will demonstrate how to add that text color property.

Make sure you add this text color property at Start Menu > Panels > Basic > MoreProgramsTab not the location shown in the screenshots.

I am posting this for a friend so he at least can get past the first hurdle. He is unable to start any programs or connect to the internet. Whenever he clicks on something he gets a popup that says "Click here to run scan" ... which he says must be a virus. He started in safe mode and ran Super Antispyware, but it didn't help.

Answer:Virus? Can't open programs or internet, popup says "Click on here to run scan"

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

After that last error message he can't even start his computer. If he purchased Windows 7 and tried to install that would it clean out the old windows and fix everything automatically? Or, does whatever is in there have to be fixed first, before he can install it. He got the system from someone awhile ago so he doesn't have the installation discs, he is going to check with him. I just thought it might be easier to install the new windows instead, and it might be cheaper overall then taking it to geek squad or whatever they're called. Not sure what to do in this situation, never had it that bad with any of my problems.

Hello to all, I am new to using Norton Security Suite 5 which came to me FREE of charge from my internet provider. Prior to this I have used AVG, Avira and AVAST (freeware editions) but was mostly partial to AVG Free.

After running a Norton Security Suite "Full System Scan" I was impressed to learn that the program results listed having Total Security Risks Detected (viruses I guess) numbering 5 in all; but did not indicate whether this was either malware or virus infections. Additionally the results did not indicate exactly which programs were affected by these so-called "risks" - only that Total Risks Resolved numbered 5 in total.

While it was somewhat troubling to learn that the program found and then listed these risks (numbering 5 in total); it was even more troubling to be given absolutely no indication exactly what these Total Risks Detected were (the name of the suspected viruses, etc) nor given any suggestion or warning as to which exactly programs were infected as well as no choice as to removal or not.

While I'm grateful that the Norton program came up with results, it would be much more helpful to have been given at least some indication of the names of the threats involved, the names of the exact programs affected by the virus and/or malware threats as well as the opportunity to review the threats prior to removal.

So what exactly does all of this mean? I have literally dozens of programs installed on my computer. Does this... Read more

Answer:FULL Scan Lists "Risks" as numbering 5 (but does not say which programs affected)

Greetings, COMPUABLE.

For ease of mind, you might consider going through the Malware Forum's Read & Run Me First thread, perform all of the suggested steps, and attach the requested logs to a new thread in that forum - I'm sure the gurus there wouldn't mind looking at your machine, making sure everything's kosher.

IMO, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Are you experiencing anything obviously out of whack? These 5 hits ("Total Security Risks Detected") could very easily be what are sometimes termed "false positives", especially if your machine is running well.

My mother was having problems with her computer at work and we decided to do a fresh install of Windows 7. Now, multiple programs, including Windows Explorer, are crashing with a "StackHash" error and I don't know what that means. Attached is the picture of the error when I right-click Computer and go to Properties. I can't even preview this screenshot because the Preview program crashes. I'm also having the same problem on multiple other programs. Is it perhaps a bad hard drive, RAM, or graphics card?

I posted this in the XP forum and was directed here, so I'll just paste my post from there. I will also include all logs the sticky reccomends.

I'm getting this error message on 90% of programs I try to open. But if I keep trying it will eventually open. It doesn't happen on chrome/firefox, thankfully.

Another problem that I believe is connected to it is that I can't open a browse window. On photobucket for example I'll click "browse" and it won't open. But if I restart the browser a few times it will eventually work, just like the problem above. I had some sort of worm on my computer earlier this month. I removed it and since then ran multiple more scans (malware anti-bytes) and nothing new comes up.

Any help will be appreciated. I know this will be hard to diagnosis, but maybe the problem with the browse window might help narrow it down? It's the first time I've ever heard of that problem occurring.

Thanks.

Hi, I recently fixed my laptop from not booting at all. The problem was, I dual booted my Windows 7 Starter with Ubuntu using a partition, I made another partition to try to allocate more memory to my Ubuntu side and I got an error on boot up that said "Error: Unknown filesystem Grub rescue>". I fixed this and deleted the dual boot but now when I boot up into Windows (as this is now the only OS) on my start menu where it used to say "Default Programs" now says "Default Programs command object for Start menu". I can't help but think this has something to do with the huge mistake I made but I was wondering if there is a way I can fix this?

I've attached an image of what I mean in case you don't understand. I hope someone can help me out. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Please avoid using IE as it only works if you purchase it and that too if its under warranty, else it might throw some or the other errors. Instead, you can try Google Chrome which never give you this sort of problem.

For about 2 weeks now whenever I launch an application it will fail to start or give me a "has stopped working" message.

It often takes 3~5 tries for it to finally start.
I get random "stopped working" messages throughout the day while using my computer as well.
This happens very frequently when I try to move files around (copy and paste) and when browsing folders, especially those with images and large icons enabled.

It started happening when I was trying to update Spybot and AVG one day. It may be a chicken or egg sort of situation, but now I have trouble installing or uninstalling any sort of malware prevention software including the ones mentioned. They either "stop working" somewhere in the middle of installation, or will say the installation was unsuccessful after it finishes.
Similar things happen when I try to use windows updates.

Any help would be spectacular!

So... I've been playing Hellgate London a lot lately and would like to clean up my memory after (or even while?) playing the game because it's what it is. Any recommendations? I've used several of these programs in the past with my previous computer but have forgotten about all of them. Also, as a wish, I'd like a program that only does what I need it to do, free unused memory. No all-in-one solutions, and preferably freeware, not shareware. This program is needed for my XP rig in my spec box.
Next, a program for "work". I capture old VHS tapes for the local sports association thingy, then convert them (because the capturer is crap and craps any movie that's longer than 5 minutes, and I have to convert before I can burn them) and scan their covers and edit them to fit 12x12 cm CD covers. I would like to have the computer left to capture or burn a 2 hour movie before I leave for home, and shut down after that. I only need a timed operation, though having it automatically shutdown after the job is done (let's say CPU load goes under 35% for 5 mins as a rule to shutdown) would be a plus.

Thanks for any suggestions!

PLEASE NOTE: I attempted to solve this myself using Group Policy Editor, so I feel my post is unique. If it is not, I apologize, the Search feature did not return anything of use, as others' HijackThis logs were different.

First, thanks for reading...

When I attempt to run ANY Mircrosoft Office programs (2003) I recieve the error message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact system administrator..."

Well. I AM the system administrator. I thought about contacting myself then this fact dawned on me.

Anyways I was recently attacked by malware and I used Avast! to delete the viruses... PERHAPS my system is clean. However, the viruses modified my system registry and restricted my programs. Using GPE, I managed to recover my Control Panel, Internet Options, and Desktop Properties via restricting, then unrestricting myself. However, I don't know how to unlock specific programs.

PLEASE look at my HijackThis log, it is imperitive I regain control of Office.

Hi

How do I get the search box "search programs and files" (i.e. the one above the Start button) to sort the results within each section by DATE, rather than by name?

Note I do NOT mean the search top right in Windows Explorer, which fwiw, is already working nicely in date order!

Clue:
I have installed Classic Shell but I read a thread saying that it wont have touched this.

J
EDIT: I am told that the files listed are ranked partly by frequency of use. And I am now wondering is this is data which my CCleaner utility is deleting. Either way the sort order have become VERY much less useful in the last couple of weeks. Any thoughts?

Answer:How can I change sort order for "Search Programs and files" results?

Hiyya ship mate I just went to Start > right clicked on it > Properties > Customise > there is a drop down list in there I don't know if that is of any help??

I have been confused if programs automatically download to the optimum "program files" for 32-bit or 64-bit or do I have to select which if the two program files I want it in? It seems everything has been going into the x86 file. I don't want to just move them all over to the 64-bit file if they really belong in the x86 file, but I am sure my new photoshop programs belong in the Program Files file yet they seen to have downloaded into the Program Files (x86) instead. Also, how am I to know which programs are better suited for either folder?

Update: I tried copying the Photoshop file and moving it to the 64-bit folder but it won't let me do so, saying a file is in use somewhere. I do not have any files from this open; I even restarted the computer to completely close anything that MIGHT be open and I get the same message. Is this maybe because it does not belong in the Program Files folder for 64-bit programs? Any other hints on how I can move this program, along with Adobe Premiere Elements (for making videos) that gives me the same message? I have been told these programs would work better running as 64-bit programs so that is why I want to move them.

Answer:When I download programs, it default to the correct "program files" ?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Windows 7 64-bit uses WOW64 (a x86 emulator) Running 32-bit Applications (Windows)

This means you'll see two Programs folders: Program Files, which is the container for your 64-bit applications and Programs Files (x86), which holds your 32-bit applications.

Any program you install will be put in the correct location. Your new Photoshop programs will be under Program Files (x86) because they are 32-bit applications, with the exception of the 64-bit version of Photoshop, which will be under Programs Files.

Do not try and move the location of your applications, just let Windows 7 put them where they belong.

I just installed Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 trial to check it out and compare it to Avast. I did a scan on my computer and supposedly it found a lot of threats, but when I look at the logs, they are all legitimate files or programs (see below).

Kaspersky Screenshot 1

Kaspersky Screenshot 2

What's the deal? What do you suggest I do?

There's a link to "disinfect all".

Answer:Kaspersky is saying legit files and programs are "very dangerous" threats??

Answer:I cannot open any programs, they kept coming up "this application has failed 2 start"

I have done that but it still doesn't work.

It will only work if I install the program again.

After I restart, or turn off-turn on my pc and go start -> all programs, win7 seems to hang for 7-10 seconds sometimes, then the list appears. After that first "load" of the programs list, it opens normally. I have indexed the start menu, as well as the rest of my drive. Any ideas about what might be causing this?

Answer:"All Programs" List from Start Menu Loads Slow First Ti

Hello Mr.Kev, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you are doing this just as the desktop is starting up, then it may just be a startup program, service, or drive that may be causing the slight delay while it is still loading. I usually find waiting a few seconds after the desktop comes up first before trying to open anything works better.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
