Program to erase hard drive

Question: Program to erase hard drive

I have some computers that I am either going to recycle or donate depending on the specs.
I need a program to erase the hard drive before I do so. I really do not want to reformat the ones I donate.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Program to erase hard drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My hard drive is strange, its had mandrake 10, win2k pro, windows advanced server, windows xp pro and home, and freebsd on it. My mission is to get windows xp on it, and leave it at that. I have a toshiba recovery cd that will not load at boot. the mandrake 10 cd will boot and install but thats no help to me. i have killdisk.exe on an A:\ disk. Right now im installing windows 2000 and im gonna try to run killdisk from there so that i can completely erase all traces of data on my harddrive and then do a clean install of windows xp. I dont know why just putting in the killsdisk.exe floppy doesnt work at boot, anyone know whats up?

Question: erase hard drive

i am planning on selling or donating my old xp computer but first i would like to wipe clean the hard drive. ive heard many files remain even after running the restore disk. can you recommend a good program to do this. also, i know i wont get a whole lot for the comp, i figure its worth $100 to $200. would it be better to donate it and take a tax write off? thanks for any help.

Answer:erase hard drive

if you take "it and take a tax write off" via the schedule A, that just basically means you are reducing you taxable income by $200. How much is that going to change (lower) your tax?? Depends on what the rest of you income is. It may lower your tax very little. I would still donate it, unless money is tight. http://www.killdisk.com/larry

Question: Erase hard drive?

We are done with an XP machine and wish to erase the hard drive prior to storage for possible future use or donation.

Is there an easy way to create a CD boot disk that will remove all but the OS and in the absence of that option, remove all?

Mark

Answer:Erase hard drive?

Remove all but the OS? If everything is on one partition then no - you have to manually delete whatever you want (or use one of the methods in this link to securely delete individual files: http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=securely+delete+files&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS369US309&ie=UTF-8&aq=0&oq=securely+delete). If you have multiple partitions / drives you can format the non-system partitions (or you can use a 3rd party app to securely delete highly sensitive data if you feel the need (http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/SecureErase.shtml). You can use the same or a similar utility to delete the system partition as well if you so choose.

You can Format it. Which can be done by opening My Computer right click the drive letter and selecting Format.

Sorry,

I miss read your message.

You really cannot delete everything except XP. As XP and the applications installed on the driver are interconnected with references.

I getting a new computer soon and wish to DONATE this one to a Charity. I want to leave most of the programs on the HD but want all personal and private stuff deleted for sure.

OS: Win 98
4GB HD
256MB mem

Hopefully, there is another way other than re-formatting it.
Thanks in advance for any help with this matter.

Answer:How to erase MOST but NOT all from Hard Drive

You'd be better off wiping the drive entirely unless the programs you leave on are freeware. If you intend to leave the OS on, you should supply the original CD as well, otherwise it is illegal. There are plenty of programs on MG to wipe a drive. Re-formatting will not achieve what you are trying to do. There are many programs that will restore programs after a reformat. A better idea might be to keep the harddrive and install it on your computer for pictures, songs, backup, etc., and donate the rest. They will have drives they can install on your old PC. Bazza

I have problems with my computer's audio/video/games/mouse skipping. A technitian said to erase my hard drive and reload xp. How do I do that?

Answer:Erase My Hard Drive

Hi mike5426!

Reloading an OS isnt as difficult as it used to be. In order to reload xp the first thing that you will need to do is go into your bios. Different systems have different keystrokes to get into the bios. Since i dont know your system i can only guess what it is?

You can try the delete key, f2, f10

When you power up the system try hitting one of these keys several times and see if it goes into your bios. If not shutdown and try another. Some systems tell you what key to hit on the bootscreen to get into your bios. So that will make things easier.

As for what you need to do in bios. Windows xp needs to boot from the cdrom drive in order to install windows xp. While your in the bios look through there and find where your able to change the boot sequence. Change it so the cdrom is the first boot device. Once you have completed that save and exit. Oh almost forgot before exiting make sure your xp cd is in the drive. When the computer reboots it say something in regards to atapi emulation. Hit any key to continue. This will allow it to boot from the cdrom. If you dont hit a key it will boot normally after it times out. Once windows xp setup is installed and you go through some normal selections. You will want to delete the windows xp partition and create a new one. Follow the prompts and when it wants to format the partition select either fat 32 or ntfs. Unless you use ntfs i would default to fat 32. Just click on the recommended format not the quick one and window... Read more

Just want to erase my hard drive, and put a new operation on this pc.I just want an real clean hard drive(c) drive.

Answer:I would like to erase my whole hard drive?

If you have the Operating System on DVD, just boot to it and run the installation. You'll have the option to keep the current partitions, or delete one (or more of them.) Keep in mind, you will lose everything that is currently on the C drive, (or the entire drive if you repartition.) So, if you have data on the computer, make sure and backup the data before changing anything on the OS side.message edited by beachyhbt

Dell computers tend to have either a hidden partition or a visible partition that you may wish to keep.If you don't care then boot to the CD/DVD and follow the normal instructions. If it says there is an install then delete that partition. It may be that this cd is a special cd that installs a bit different. As in you plan to give it away, sell it, or throw it out? If so use something like DBAN: http://www.dban.org/
It can securely erase the entire drive for you.

If you plan to keep it and use it then nothing beyond a simple format during the Windows installation is needed.

subject explains my question, how does the hard drive erase data?

Answer:How does the hard drive erase data?

The harddrive won't erase data right away. If you are deleting a bunch of files from anywhere on your disk, the system tells the drive which files in which locations you are "removing". The drive will then goto it's table and remove the file's entry (or folder's entry) and remove it from the table. This way, the drive no longer "thinks" that the removed file is still on the drive. The files actually don't even move.....they are all still on the physical drive. The file(s) get removed (or over written) when you add an application or more files to replace the area on the drive where the other files physically were. Does this make sense?? Hope it helps.

Wait! Don not erase the drive yet!You will find many here who want to help for no charge. Now thee will be some questions.Did something happen to this laptop? Was is dropped?Do you have another computer that can write a CD for testing?IMO you should first test the laptop with a 'live' CD that will prove the laptop is OK. The 'Live CD' does not need hard drive space to run. So nit is a site way to confirm that the problem is with the hard drive and not other parts of the Laptop. Also, a bookable USB flash drive can run some diagnostics.http://www.easis.com/easis-drive-check.htmlDoes  that help?

Ok...I give up...I need help, PLEASE!

I inherited a computer with WindowsME and Windows 2000 running on it simutaneously. Since I don't have any of the the orignal Windows disks, I can't use the install disks to do a clean reinstall. At this point I'm thinking of just erasing the whole c:\ drive and running XP.

What is the quickest and easiest way to remove all of my current data (w/o having to buy expensive software), and then reinstalling Windows 2000 or XP?

Thanks for any help.

Ammount of RAM:

If this is a "Brand name" PC, it may come with a restore disk, so that might be the best place to start. Also, don't forget to save your important files before you reformat it.

Hello,
I am trying to figure out how to completely erase a hard drive so that no data can be recovered. What is the easiest and most secure way to do this? Is there any software out there for this, or is it better to just format it multiple times? Thanks

Oh, btw, the hard drive I am trying to erase is my iPod. I used it to backup some files, so I would like to completely erase the hard drive before giving it away. If I format the drive, will the iPod still be able to run? Do I need to transfer firmware/os? Thanks

Have you tried totally uninstalling McAfee, if you think it's McAfee causing the problem, bludywoman? To reinstall XP (I assume you're using XP) make sure that the BIOS is set to boot from your CD-ROM drive, reboot your PC with the XP CD in the CD-ROM drive, when asked to (on the start screen), press any key to boot from the CD-ROM drive, then follow the on-screen instructions to format the hard drive and load XP.

Hello
I have a msi u130 netbook and i want to erase the hard drive. Only thing is there is no built in CD/DVD drive so i cannot load a system disc after i wipe clean. I'm also thinking i won't be able to reboot using factory installed information due to wiping the hard drive.
Can anyone please advise me how to go about adding the system/windows7, will i be able to download from a website for free? How would i go about adding the re boot information to netbook?
Thanks in advance for advice.

Answer:I want to erase my hard drive permanently

Not sure why you want to erase hard drive. Without external cd/dvd drive, no chance to reinstall Win 7 and programs. Also appears you do not have the Win7 installation CD. You will also need to make sure you have note of your Win 7 serial number and a backup of your documents, emails etc.
I suggest you restore the notebook to factory settings. You will of course lose all your documents unless you have them backed up. You will need a USB memory stick for that or in the cloud with Google,MS outlook Drop box to name a few.

Hi,

Apologies if I've posted in wrong area or if this has been covered to death but I can't find it!
I have a Dell Inspiron 1012 notebook running windows 7 starter. The computer contains sensitive material which I need to completely and permanently erase so that even if the notebook is professionally examined, it can't be recovered. Before anyone assumes, it's not porn or any dodgy images!
I've been researching shredding software but it's a minefield, can anyone help?
Also, if the software is downloaded, the HD completely erased, will there be a trace on the HD of the date, time etc... And programme which deleted it?
Would I need to reinstall windows after the HD has been erased?

Thanks in advance

Answer:How to permanently erase a hard drive?

Hi,

It depends on what you want to be left with, and the effort you want to go to. Do you want:

1. A completely blank HDD with absolutely zero information on it (incl. no Windows Starter?, or
2. Windows Starter still on the HDD, but all other securely data deleted?

If you want option 1, then use DBAN:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...ard-drive.html

Make sure you physically disconnect all other HDD's (incl. USB drives) with the exception of the one that holds DBAN and the disk to be wiped

If you want option 2, then:
1. Delete all sensitive information as you normally would, and empty the Recycle bin, and
2. Securely wipe the deleted data using the Windows CIPHER command
Cipher Command - Overwrite Deleted Data in Windows

Its highly doubtful the data would be recoverable - the more passes you run, the exponentially harder it becomes to retrieve any data. Some select government and security agencies do have the ability to overcome even this wipe, but even then it would take many, many, many hours/days/weeks to do this. It would have to be worth their while, and something tells me you probably aren't harbouring any state secrets, so you aren't worth the effort

Hello,

I mean to completely erase all hidden files that can be restored and such.

Answer:FULLY erase a hard drive

Formatting just eliminates directory entries.

If you wish to make the files unrecoverable, the disk must be overwritten. Depending on how securely you wish to do that, it could be written multiple times.

The freeware CCleaner can do that.

I have a T22 thinkpad. Well actually it is my daughters. There is something wrong with the hard drive. After the splash screen for IBM right before it would normally go into loading windows it comes up and asks for a password. She dont remember putting a password in for the hard drive. If I pull the hard drive out of her system and put it in one of the other T series laptops it does the exact same thing. If I put the hard drive in a windows based desktop PC using the proper adapter if you make it the primary it does the same thing and if you make it the secondary windows does not recognize the partitions or format. Now there is nothing on the drive that she does not have backed up. So if I can find a way to completely erase the hard drive and start over from scratch that would be wonderful. Otherwise I will have to get a replacement hard drive. I have taken the drive to two local computer shops and they want like 50 or so to wipe the drive, on ebay I can get a similar drive for 25. So either I can find a way to do this at home or the drive becomes a hockey puck. Oh and when the drive is in a system it does not allow access to the bio settings either. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I intend to sell my computer soon, but before doing so I'd like to clear the hard drive and remove all my personal data. I've done a bit of research on the topic and found a few programs (DBAN, Eraser) that seem to do this. I'm not exactly sure which program is best though, or what exactly they do.

I would also like to reinstall Windows 7 after erasing the hard drive. However, my copy of Windows 7 is an upgrade from the computer's original OS, Windows Vista. The computer didn't come with any system recovery or OS install disks so I'm not sure how to boot and install and OS after erasing everything. Will I be able to just put in the Windows 7 upgrade disk and install it? (I can't imagine it could be that simple, but who knows!)

I do kind of remember a "clean install option" when I upgraded - would that be the same as clearing the hard drive and reinstalling?

Thanks!

Answer:Erase Hard Drive and Reinstall Windows

Hello and welcome to the boards.

You are making a good choice by removing all personal data from the hard drive. I'm sure any program will do this just fine. As for how they work, the erase the drive, then go back two or three more times to make sure they got everything on the drive. It is much more thorough then simply reformatting. As for installing Windows 7 again, there is a tutorial here on how to make a disc that you can install a fresh copy of any version of 7 from. There is also a tutorial on this site (don't have the link handy at the moment) that might be a little clearer if the first tutorial is confusing at all.

Lenovo is replacing my failing hd under warranty and I need to return the defective hd. I have deleted my current personal files using spybot's secure shredder and then the freerase utility when some files proved too large for the spybot's shredder.

I have summit's hard disk scrubber installed and plan to run it tonight to clear the free space using the heavy scrub overwrite [3-stage pattern 0s,1s and random]. I had a hard time getting the drive to boot last time, but if it will boot again tomorrow I'd like to turn off hibernation, reboot and then rerun the scrubber. That would scrub the hibernation file, wouldn't it? I also plan to set pagefile to clear at shutdown. If I'm able to run the scrubber tomorrow after a reboot, it would also be in the free space and get the heavy overwrite, correct?

If the drive is still running I was then going to run Darik's Boot And Nuke from a boot cd using the interactive mode so I could skip the hidden service partition and just wipe the main partition. I'm hoping it won't take days and days to run. The thinkpad x41 tablet's hd is infamous for its slowness.

The only other hd wipe freeware utility I found was killdisk - the freeware version only does a single pass of 0s but it might be quicker.

Are there some temp folders or caches whose files I ought to shred before shutting down the hd in case it totally dies before I can use DB&N?

Answer:How best to securely erase thinkpad hard drive

I am thinking that you can just run the DBAN quick mode, it does not take that long and it should deal with the entire drive. Is there any particular reason you don't want to trash the hidden partition?

Also Lenovo does not go through all your personal data, so you should be ok with just a quick wipe.

Answer:How do I erase hard drive and do a fresh load of XP?

Do you want to completely wipe the HDD and reinstall Windows with the XP cd? There are freeware utilities that will wipe the HDD clean. Just Google "Wipe HDD".

Since you have an older HP, you probably have a recovery partition on the HDD. By using System Recovery, you will bring the computer back to the way it was when it was new.

To use System Recovery go to Start>>All Programs>>Hewlett Packard>>Hp Pavilion PC Tools>>HP PC System Recovery and follow the instructions.

I have a USB 3 500GB Seagate Expansion Portable Drive (2.5") that would be around 12 months old. It has stopped working, won't mount on my Mac or even start spinning. I have resigned myself to the fact that it is buggered but thought I'd have a bit of a play with it to see what was wrong and if I can salvage any data. I opened the case and it contains a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500 GB drive. I thought hopefully it is an issue with the SATA-USB interface in the case so I removed the hard drive and put it in a hard drive dock. The drive now spins up but still doesn't mount. In Disk Utility (Mac) the main drive is listed in black in the list on the left so it is registered by the computer (nothing at all was listed when it was still in the case) but the single volume is greyed out. I tried repairing the drive but that failed. I tried erasing the drive but that failed ("Cannot unmount disk").

Any suggestions on how to repair this? I don't know how to tell the difference between hard drive problems that are fixable and ones where you can save yourself a heap of time and just throw it away because it will never work again...

To make a long story short, windows 7 had wanted to install it's normal updates for my mothers pc.
It had some some other hardware updates it wanted to do, I went to bed at 12:15am.
I woke up windows crashed and I rebooted and strangely the bios was over written and erased.
My mothers MSI mobo wanted a bios reflash in order to boot up.
I did so and everything worked fine until windows 7 loaded up all programs 7 minutes later it froze.
Again the same process happened, I erased the hdd contents using my eee netbook and formatted it with NTFS.

Finally even without anything on the hard drive it locked bios again I restart the pc and I am back to **** again....
Twenty minutes ago the system is working great without the hdd, bios did say briefly that it had a error with DQ4 failure or IRQ failure it said to reset the pc.
I moved the ram into another spot with no errors and I am about to replace the IDE cable.

Can anyone tell me what could be the problem before I contact MSI on monday afternoon for a RMA return ?

Anyways, according to MSI's website, which they use this beepcode layout for almost all the motherboards that they manufacture.

I have a 160gb hard drive in my computer now, and a 40gb HD that is not in use, but also has stuff on it. I ordered a new computer that comes with an 80gb HD. I want to put the new 80gb in the old computer, and the 160 & 40gb in the NEW computer. My question is, will I lose all my data and saved files on the 160 & 40gig hard drives amidst the swap? Or should everything just be the same? The old computer had/has a p4 1.8ghz processor and the new one has a p4 2.8ghz processor. Please let me know what my options are! I want to keep everything thats on the 160gig, it would be okay to wipe out the 40gig (I'll probably do that eventually anyway). Thanks in adv.

Answer:Will hard drive transfer erase my stuff?

It's going to be a bit tricky swapping out the drives without losing any data, since both the 80 & 160 gig drives have operating systems on them that you don't want to lose. How much data do you have on the 160 now? If it's mostly unused, I'd use Partition Magic or similar to partition the drive into 2 partitions, "C" which will still have your operating system and installed programs, and "D" where you can move all your personal files, music, movies etc. I'd then use Norton Ghost, or Acronis True Image to make a backup image of BOTH of your C drives, either to CD or if there's enough room, to your new D drive. You do that directly on the box with the 160 installed, then remove that & install it in the new box as a "slave", install Ghost or True Image on that system & save the image to what will now probably be the "E" drive in that box. Be careful that you save the image to the correct partition, and name them so you'll remember which is which. A ghost image captures EVERYTHING from the drive, including root directories and hidden/system files that won't work in simple drag & drop copying. Make sure you've got either the boot floppy disks to perform a restore, or that you can restore from the program CD on both systems before you go any further!

While you're in the new box, format your primary partition on the 160, which you're going to want to be "C&q... Read more
