Question: Windows 7 Essentials (Not Microsoft Essentials) After clean install

Because I can't install Skype or Snag It or anything really like that, I keep getting erros. This is all I have installed so far (Picture):

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have downloaded Microsoft essentials 2012 twice and get error message 0X80040705. I only want the windows live mail program not all the other ones included. I left a check mark in only win live mail. Both times I get this error message and it also has
dotnet 40 after the error code. I have this program on my laptop that is dying and want to put it on this laptop. I'd try to just transfer it from the old laptop but not sure just how to do it or if it can be done.

I have both Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Security Essentials (incl. Firewall, Auto Updates and VIRUS PROTECTION) running on my old pc. Since they both have a virus protection, do I need both? It seems that this pc is always downloading updates and slows the pc terribly.Wellgo

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Security Essentials

"Windows Security Essentials"Are you sure that is the exact name? Maybe I've missed something but I've never heard of it.It is not good to have two Anti-Virus programs running in real time, for the reason you gave. They tend to "check each other" and cause slow downs.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hello,

Similar to this thread and the one it links to: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/496263/access-is-denied-and-disabled-windows-defender-microsoft-security-essentials/

I had some kind of malware/virus that I believe I have removed using Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, specifically a file called winmgr.exe and Microsoft.com were deleted.

While I had these issues MSE could not be run, I got an error saying I didn't have access to it.  I tried uninstalling MSE and now I cann't reinstall it - I get error 0x80070643

Any help would be much appreciated.

Last night I found my computer was infected with a rogue security program called "Internet Security 2013".  It was announcing false positives, hogging resources with a fake svchost process, and redirecting google searches.  After running TDSSKiller and Combofix, it looks like I've removed any trace of the rogue program-- at least, there's nothing hogging the cpu or memory, and I'm not being redirected to obvious fake security-related sites.

So here's my problem:  when I was running ComboFix, it asked be to de-activate Microsoft Security Essentials.  When I tried to open the MSE control panel, I got some generic error window (sorry, I didn't write down what it said).  So i decided to uninstall MSE throgh the "add/remove programs" panel.  After running ComboFix, I was able to download the legit MSE installer  from the microsoft website.  I thought I'd be able to reinstall MSE easily, but whe I run the install wizard I get an error message saying the installation can not be completed.

It gives this error code:  0x80070643

I did some searching, and apparently this error happens when you have other anti-virus software installed that conflicts with MSE.  I don't have any other AV software, and I thought I uninstalled my old MSE correctly (it no longer shows up in my add/remove programs window).  I used this microsoft fixit thing to uninstall Microsoft Security Client, but when I try to instal MSE again I ge... Downloaded mseinstall.exe, MSEInstall Package version 4.1.522.0 to PC running Windows 7; ran installation wizard and it could not complete the Security Essentials installation. Error code 0x80070643

Clicked link to "Get help on this issue." It said either some other security programs are running or you're missing some prerequisites. Perform the following steps:
Step 1 - remove other anti virus programs
Step 2 - Completely uninstall Windows Live OneCare

I ran appwiz.cpl, removed Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware and manually deleted folders and files left behind. Also downloaded OneCareCleanup.exe, Self-Extracting Cabinet, version 6.1.22.0; ran As Administrator, it said, "Windows Live Cleanup tool is shutting down;" went to How Do I Uninstall Anti-Virus software; clicked on a link to Microsoft Virus and Malware Forum; found hundreds of posts about problems installing MSE and directions on where to find cleanup tools. I ran several clean-up tools, no change, I still can not install Microsoft Security Essentials.

I would like to create a log file and determine the exact cause for the failure of mseinstall.exe, MSEInstall Package version 4.1.522.0 to install correctly on my real-time, anti-virus free PC . Can someone help me?

Answer:I can't install Microsoft Security Essentials

I'm running Malwarebytes along with MSE and they do not conflict. Something else you have (or had) could be interferring.

After you uninstalled, whatever you did, you must first restart the PC before attempting to install MSE. If you try without restarting the original problem can still be there.

If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.Press Scan button. It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Hello,

I'm trying to install MSE and it gives me an error stating that it cannot complete installation due to error code 0x80070643. I've uninstalled all anti virus programs, but it continues to give me the error.

Also I have Windows Vista, and cannot turn on the firewall. When I go to update settings to have it turned on, it clocks for a bit, then doesn't do anything. Please help. Thanks.

Once upon a time, I tried unistalling MSE because it was conflicting with other antivirus/malware programs. Afterwards, I found I was unable to download any files from the internet, I would get an error saying "Virus scan failed, file deleted". I assume this was an issue with MSE, so I decided to reinstall it. I uninstalled all my other antivirus/malware software, ran Ccleaner, downloaded MSE from a friend's computer and attempted to reinstall it on my machine. The MSE installer comes up with an error about not being able to find or access epp.msi, and neither can I. After getting frustrated by the snipe hunt on Microsoft's "tech support" forum, I decided to try here.

Answer:Cannot Install Microsoft Security Essentials

First, follow this link and download the removal tools for ALL of the listed programs you have installed or have previously had installed, even if you think you've already uninstalled them, including MSE:http://experts.windows.com/w/experts_wiki/156.aspxNext, make sure all Windows updates are installed and any important data is backed up.When you're ready to install again, go to this link and download MSE and install again:http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/Note for the future: Never have more than one real-time antivirus running at the same time. Despite the logic that more protection is better, having more than one antivirus suite running at a time can and likely will cause a conflict. Install one real-time AV product and one firewall product (if your AV doesn't provide a firewall service). Some items are exempt from this rule, like Malwarebyte's Antimalware since it doesn't do real-time scans. Always check for programs that might possibly conflict. If you aren't sure, you can always come back and ask.

Hello.

I'm unable to install Microsoft Security Essentials. This system experienced an unexpected loss of power after being unplugged from the wall. Microsoft Security Essentials refuses to install exiting with the error code 0x80070645.

I searched Google and came across this Knowledge Base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2483120, I followed the instructions, and removed the registry keys, however I'm still unable to install MSE. I've also tried the FixIt, but that doesn't resolve the issue either.

I came across HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Antimalware Setup, and so I thought "This might be causing that error." However, my attempts to remove this key, and the subkeys fails with the error message : Cannot delete Microsoft Antimalware Setup : Error while deleting key.

After searching Google for Error while deleting key, I came across this Knowledge Base article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2021860, I followed the instructions and downloaded RegDelNull, however that gives me this error message : A null context handle was passed from the client to the host during a remote procedure call.

Any ideas?

My granddaughter received a new computer with Windows 7 as the operating system. I tried downloading Microsoft Security Essentials as her antivirus program however, it just won't install. I have tried using the "run" command when downloading and that didn't work. I then saved it to the desktop and tried executing it from there and it still doesn't install. There is no error message and it appears that it is installing but never shows up in the programs menu or in the add/remove programs listing. Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Microsoft Security Essentials will not install

right click on the installer and select "run as administrator"

see if it installs correctly.

If there is another AV software installed, uninstall it first.

Do you need to install another antivirus along with Microsoft Security Essentials?
The short answer?
No.
The long answer? Microsoft Security Essentials is free software that helps protect against viruses, spyware, worms, and other malicious or unwanted software. Microsoft Security Essentials has already won awards and gotten great reviews from security experts. And it's free. If you use Microsoft Security Essentials you don't need to install any other antivirus or antispyware software.
Via: MSDN Blogs What is you experience with MSE? Do you use MSE or some other antivirus?

Answer:Do you need to install another antivirus along with Microsoft Security Essentials?

hi !
Emsisoft AntiMalware (EAM) which is a-squared with a new name, & MSE v2-beta.
they are working well together, i created exceptions for both of them in each others settings.
i normally only use EAM for realtime-protection, it has been my only "realtime-A/V" for months now.
i also use Avast & MBAM as on demand scanners for double-checking to see if EAM has missed something,
none of them has ever found anything, except a few false positives.
i decided to test MSE v2-beta since it was a new version with some added protection.
v2 is faster then v1, fx. when you right-click on a file to run a scan, it starts VERY fast.
but since EAM offers more protection then MSE, i?m not going to replace EAM...

Hello and welcome Zincix mate if that isn't installing and personally I don't like that program have a look at some of these and try another they are all free and I would look at Bitdefender, Avast, and Avira at least but there are plenty.

Probably the Best Free Security List in the World > section 2 has the real time stuff.

In addition if you haven't got them already you would do worse than keep these as permanent add ons to the security you pick.

Hi,

I'm talking about: mssefullinstall-x86fre-en-us-xp.exe, which is in essential a few msi's (mp_ambits.msi, msse.msi and some other files).
I can do a silent install by using the switch /s /runwgacheck

I'd like to create a silent install with custom settings (Schedule Day/Time).

What is the best way to do that?

Regkey's: I find the custom regkey's (ScheduleDay.reg, ScheduleTime.reg) but I can't import them after the silent install (I think it's only possible by the system account?)
Can I use transformfiles?

Hello,

Thought I would, finally, download the virus protection that it seems everyone likes in Windows Essentials.
Running W7, the 64 bit vers.

But, I guess the latest "gimmick" is that all the download sites, that I thought, and imply, are MS sites are some other third party sites that also automatically change your Browser to Chrome, and install AVG !

Can anyone point me to the official MS site please, and what I should select to just have the anti-virus
component installed ?

BTW: how does it compare to AVAST free ? Differences ?

Thanks,

I decided to update Movie Maker etc. to the 2011 versions offered by Windows Update. I see hardly any difference in Movie Maker features but the most annoying thing is that Microsoft have deemed it necessary to sign into Windows Live just to upload a video to YouTube from within Movie Maker. They also have a Windows Live ID Service and Windows Live ID Service Monitor running in the background.

Another thing I noticed before even updating to 2011 version is that if you use Windows Live Photo Gallery to edit a photo Microsoft is assigning an ID number to the properties of the file.

I also saw a video yesterday of Balmer proclaiming that we all want "The Cloud" and that they have enough talent to ensure our privacy. Like fuck, they can't even make IE secure so there is no way they can make cloud computing secure.

I need Live ID for some games but no fucking way do I want it running all the time and integrated into any other programs I use. What douchebags.

I installed it and declined the LIve sign in options. I can manually upload to youtube no problem.

Anybody running Microsoft's Security Essentials on Windows 7 x64?

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (retail upgrade) and after doing all my installs I installed Microsoft's Security Essentials. At first I did a "quick scan and it took like 10 minutes, however doing a full scan took at least 8.5 hours! This is going through 10 partitions on 3 hard drives.

By contrast Kaspersky takes about 60 minutes or less to do a full system scan the same system.

Is there a problem with MSE doing full scans and has anyone else noticed this.

On the positive side I visited a website posted by a forum member on one of the game forums I visit and MSE flag a file trying to install itself on my computer. Good job.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows 7

10 partitions and 3 drives. Thats whats taking so long. You might try adding some exclusions. MSSE>Settings>Exclude File Types.

I added quite a few exclusions since there arent any be default. Every other virus scanner has a default set. So you will need to add some to MSSE. Thsi will speed up scanning... Here are some to get you started..

AVI, BMP, CHM, INI, ICO, JPG, HXW, MPG, MP3, PNG, TXT, WMV, XML

You can also exclude know safe folders under the Excluded Files & Locations.

For the past 6 1/2 weeks I've been running windows 7 professional pefectly I've been using zone alarm 9.1 and avast free home edition.
This all started up on monday evening at 9:50pm when I decided to take down avast for about a week and see how windows 7, zone alarm and microsoft essentials did on it's own.
I didn't realize it right away, but when I downloaded microsoft essentials from microsoft's website and installed it.
When it had finished I rebooted my machine and upon start up, the minute microsoft essentials came online with startup programs my computer did a very hard freeze I didn't know what the problem was at first but I had to begin eliminating certain updates from windows uninstalled zone alarm 9 system mechanic 9, even java and recently installed drivers. none of them was the problem.
It had gotten so bad that I had reinstall windows 7 via usb memory card because my dvd-rw got knocked out from all the ruckus.
Eventually at 12:45am today I got everything back up and running again.
As soon as I put microsoft essentials on there and it "DOWNLOADED" a program update it was right back at locking up the pc.

For anyone who might handled this problem or windows 7 beta do you know why it's doing this ?
Directed @Mak: do you know if there might be a specific software conflicts problem between 7 and microsofts antivirus program ?

Answer:This could be a big problem for others microsoft essentials and windows 7.

So you are on Win7 Beta still?

I just found out from looking on Amazon for Network Security books that MS has some new entry level exams. One of them that caught my eye was Microsoft Windows Security Essentials Exam 98-367. It covers basic security stuff, i skimmed through the book and it is pretty in-depth with some great material, I think I am going to pick this up.

With the release of Windows Live Essentials 2011, the Microsoft Product Update Team announced that it will be available through Windows Update, starting October 19, 2010. (Note: Windows Live Essentials 2011 is not compatible with Windows XP.)
Windows Vista and Windows 7 users will be offered the update as a "Recommended Update" if any one of the Windows Live software programs are installed. If you do NOT have any of the Windows Live Essentials programs installed on your computer, it will still be offered but as an "Optional Update". It is not necessary to install if you do not use any of the programs.
Also note that Live Mesh is being replaced by Windows Live Mesh. As a result, support for Live Mesh ends March 31, 2011 and the beta will stop working. After that date, you will not be able to access any files stored online in your Live Desktop or connect to your PCs remotely using the Live Mesh software. In addition, your files will also stop syncing between your computers and your Live Mesh online storage. Windows Live Essentials on Microsoft Update Windows Live Essentials

Hey peeps, just thought i'd give you all a heads up, got a notification from windows update telling me that there are new updates available, these updates are windows live essentials and microsoft security essentials.

These consist of several programs:

Microsoft security essentials is a new program developed by microsoft which takes a new look at windows defender, there's a new, cleaner interface, new icon, and seems pretty fast after the first quick scan... screenshot below:

live essentials is the same live essentials pack you get from the microsoft live site, not much new here, bing bar is included instead of the live search bar, that is all.

MrNeeds

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials - Windows Update

Thanks for the update.

MSE gave me a pop-up advising me there was an upgrade and inviting me to download and install it which I did. To be honest, I really didn't pay enough attention to the program (except when I got it a while back and set it up) so I don't really see much of any difference in the looks. I have noticed it does scan a bit quicker though - so an MS update/upgrade that actually improved things for a change.

I downloaded the whole Essentials 2011 Suite about a week ago or so. I like some of the changes and not some of the others. I preferred the Live Toolbar to the Bing toolbar - you could customize it more and could give more space to the search box (which I can't seem to be able to widen and think it can't be done). I also wish there were a way to turn off the alert just because I have pop-ups enabled - it should allow you to disable alerts for the items you choose to enable so if a real alert occurs you can notice it. While I like WLM better than Windows Mail, I'm still having trouble connecting to one of my newsgroups (but otherwise it works fine) - though I rarely use it except for newsgroups as I use Outlook 2007 instead. I'm on the fence about Messenger. It seems to take up too much of the screen now with details I'm not really interested in (but end up reviewing because they're there). I don't really use the other applications but downloaded them anyway so I'd be able to fire them up to help answer questions about them in the forum.

Hi,

I would love for someone to help with an issue I have been having with MS essentials, upon booting up of my laptop I get an error message from MS essentials ( 0x80073b01)

I've had a look around and downloaded various different things to help, hitman pro managed to find three things that I know should not be there but it cant repair it.
these are the notes that hitman pro found:

   Redirection: Backup -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: Drivers -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: en-us -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

I have no idea how to fix this, I currently cannot search for new updates due to this problem, and it deactivated my firewall also but I have thankfully managed to get that running again ( I think ).

I found a link that is alot like the problem I seem to be having, If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it:

Hi,

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
 rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once the scan has finished running, a file named Rkill.txt should be located on the desktop. Please copy and copy the contents into your next reply.

Hi - I have just installed MSE on an old laptop which already has Windows Defender. Should I uninstall Windows Defender? Thanks.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Defender

The 'old' Defender is anti malware only, so can run alongside MSE. On Windows 8, Defender is itself a combination of the two (ie, there is no downloadable MSE for W8).

MSE is anti virus, Defender is anti malware. Rather than Defender, I personally would go for the free Superantispyware, but there are lots of other free ones.
I used to use MSE for antivirus, but have now switched to the free version of AVG.

Hi Guys,

My Brothers laptop running Windows 7 has Windows Bitdefender & Microsoft Security Essentials installed.

Windows Bitfender is turned off and unable to be turned.

My question is should you only have Windows Bitdefender installed on your laptop or just Microsoft Security Essentials installed but not the two programmes which is why Windows Bitfender can't be turned on?

There is one other issue with his laptop where some times when at the desktop his screen goes black for a few seconds  then all the desktop icons enlarge as well as the taskbar bulking out the desktop area.

If he shuts down the laptop the desktop is normal for 5 minutes and sometimes 1 hour then back to the black screen for a few seconds and enlarged icons.

Any suggestions please.

If you are referring to Windows Defender, MS Security Essentials turns off Windows Defender by default at installation.

I've been onto all kinds of sites, reading about people who cannot start windows defender, and cannot start it manually. Relax!

First Windows defender is only back up antivirus software graciously adapted into Vista, really its only for those who are not running any antivirus software at all. Sooo, if your running any other antivirus software you should disable defender anyway. Multiple antivirus packages running together is not a good thing. They litterally fight against each other, so only use one.

Secondly, defender will not run, and you cannot start it manually if you are running microsoft security essentials. Essentials will automatically turn off defender. Don't freak out, this is supposed to happen. If you really want defender to run, you must uninstall essentials. Although, I highly recommend essentials, Norton 360 is also great.

Microsoft is adding Microsoft Security Essentials to Windows Update as a Optional update. No word yet on when or if the update will ever be a required update. Some companies has complained saying if this is a required update Microsoft would be cornering the market on Anti-Virus. Companies are also saying this could reek havoc on the personal computer since the user might already have an anti-virus installed. Most users have Windows Update set to Automatic so again this could be a very bad thing for the unbeknown user. We will have to wait and see how this plays out in the near future.

They may wanna be careful doing this, as of now, a lot of software disables the windows defender service for some kinda incompatibility reason. Hi

Can anyone help me with this. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my Windows 7 PC. Until recently this has completed a full scan without any problems. Now it has begun stalling after roughly 45 minutes. I ran a full scan over the past two nights but with the same results. I can do a Quick Scan OK and I can do a Full Scan in Safe Mode, but not in Normal Mode. I have had Malwarebytes Premium installed for ages and it hasn't caused any conflict with MSE. However, recently I installed Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware (both free copies). I uninstalled Ad-Aware and that is when the problem started.

I have unistalled (with great difficulty) MSE and reinstalled it but to no avail. I would welcome any help and suggestions.

Many thanks

George

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Windows 7 stalls

If it was after you uninstalled Ad-Aware that the problem started, have you tried re-installing it? Set both Ad-Aware and Spybot only to run on demand, don't have them running in the background in conflict with MSE. Have you tried uninstalling Spybot?

Have you tried a System Restore position from before the problem started?

Thousands of downloads. Countless positive reviews on software blogs around the Internet. It's been quite a ride so far for Microsoft Security Essentials.
In AV Comparative's most recent report on malware removal, MSE was the only free antivirus rated Advanced+. That ranking placed it alongside big names like Norton, Kaspersky, and F-Secure. Security Essentials also beat out technician favorite ESET, which managed only an Advanced rating. Microsoft Security Essentials rated best free antivirus for Windows

Hi,

I can no longer find where to access the Security Essentials that is built in on Windows 7. I've tried searching on Google but it keeps claiming it needs to be installed when I know it's built-in as I used it a little over a month ago.

Also is their any difference between the built in client and Microsoft Security Essentials. Thanks

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials (Built-In Windows 7 protection)

The built in version is "windows defender" (just search for defender and you will find it) and although it uses the same virus definitions as Security Essentials I don't think it offers the same level of protection or options as MSE itself. Installing MSE automatically disables windows defender.
I would go ahead and install MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Does anyone know why Microsoft canceled support/discontinued Microsoft Expression Web and why Windows Live Essentials, especially Windows Live Writer hasn't been updated in years? Both are great products but Windows Live Writer is my heartbeat but I stopped using it as i realized that Wordpress' dashboard is easier to work with now as it has been updated and I can upload my image galleries for a post flawlessly in WP's dashboard.

Windows Live Writer can't upload WordPress galleries to the WordPress site directly. It can only work with Picasa and OneDrive and the files are stored on those accounts while only the thumbnails get publisher to my WordPress site. I can't get the thumbnails to work in this manner anymore either as when i try to upload galleries using Windows Live Writer I get error messages saying it won't go through. That's why I stopped using Live Writer.

Expression Web seems okay but Adobe Muse can do better effects but I don't use Muse right now as it is problematic. If Muse and Expression Web were somehow fused, not by a company merger but shared the same features I would be all up for buying software like that. But my cousin who is a techie purchased Muse and Expression Web several years ago and was using them briefly and regretted using Expression Web as it is so basic and primitive. Adobe Muse is too tricky and the items never stay where you place them. I have seen people work with Muse at work and in tutorials but unfortunately all my... Read more

I have windows xp Professional Version 2002 sp3. Seems I got a virus when I down loaded a movie(my bad). Was getting the BSOD, and alerts for Windows Automatic Updates to be turned on. Also I am running Microsoft security essentials which also won't update. Although Malwarebytes updates automatically. I downloaded Superantispyware and ran it 3 times in safe mode .Found and deleted malware. Rebooted and so far no BSOD ( fingers crossed). Still get the alerts for the updates.

If I have Microsoft Security Essentials "active" I am unable to turn on Windows Defender.
If I turn off MSE then I can turn on Defender.
If I then return to MSE and activate it, Defender is automatically turned off.

Is this normal behavior?
If I can only run one of these, which is the preferred choice?

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender mutually exclusive

Hi, yes that is normal behavior. i would use MSE over defender.

It?s been a while since Microsoft has shared any new information about its free antimalware offering, Microsoft Security Essentials (codenamed ?Morro?). But the Softies are quietly setting the stage for the product, which is slated to launch before the end of the year.
A quick refresher: MSE is the replacement for Windows Live OneCare and a superset of Windows Defender. Microsoft officials have said it is meant for consumers who are unwilling or unable to pay for security software. A number of Microsoft watchers are expecting the final version of MSE to debut in October, given that it is meant to work on XP, Vista and Windows 7 ? and Windows 7 launches on October 22. More than 400,000 testers have downloaded the test version of MSE, according to Microsoft.

I can not get Windows 7 Update to work at all.  I receive a message that the service is currently not running and to restart the computer.  This does nothing.  I have gone into services under "services.msc" and windows update is not listed as running or stopped.

I came across this issue while trying to get Microsoft Security Essentials to update.  I keep getting an error code.  Of course now that I am writing this and try to get the error code to reference, the update works.  The MSE not updating is a chronic problem for me.

I am still fairly new to the forum, so please let me know if there is additional information, or I make a slip-up.

Thank you.

Slightly old news but still worth noting...

Microsoft Security Essentials rated best free antivirus for Windows

Quote:
In AV Comparative's most recent report on malware removal, MSE was the only free antivirus rated Advanced+. That ranking placed it alongside big names like Norton, Kaspersky, and F-Secure. Security Essentials also beat out technician favorite ESET, which managed only an Advanced rating.

It's also worth noting that only three antivirus apps - Norton 2010, eScan, and Security Essentials - scored marks of good or better in removal of malware and removal of leftovers. So not only has MSE beaten free competitors like AVG (version 8.5 tested, not 9.0), Avira, and Avast, it also posted test scores equal to or better than a dozen antivirus programs you'd have to pay for.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials rated best free antivirus for Windows

I concur. For a free, simple solution for the average home user, nothing beats MSE.

My PC has stopped loading webpages in IE and chrome, but will update malwarebytes/SAS and other such programs. I have troedscans and such, but all that seems to work is system restoring to a certain restore point, but even that only gives me webpage access for a few minutes before chrome throws up error 102. I think the problem is "Microsoft security essentials" related as I've had a few of those popups and a new white flag with an red x icon near the clock.

I have tried rkill followed by mbam with no luck, and SAS, it always comes out with my Internet saying connected, and updating certain things, but not loading pages in the browser.

Hi, Dick Quinn.
Welcome to The Windows Club.
If you installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), it includes the anti-spyware engine of Windows Defender. Thus, Windows Defender is turned of with the installation.
Please let us know if you have not installed MSE.

Hi forum,

I'm having some problem about a week ago with Microsoft security essentials bugging out on me and not opening or updating. Basically the message I got on opening MSE was windows cannot access specified path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file. Upon reading this about a week ago, I think! I proceeded to foolishly downloading a Zeroroot access program and a few MSE alternatives. Since then I have still been unable to re-install MSE by deleting all components in the registry.

The error code I get with trying to re-install MSE is 0x80070643

Having then unistalled the zeroaccess program and the previous alternative antivirus programs, I still cannot get MSE working, and I now have a windows 7 update error. The new system update I believe may be to do with security as-well!! The error code on doing a windows 7 update is 80070005, and it did cut out at 9% every time. (although now I think it is just 0%)
Can someone please help me as I have had a very successful streak of avoiding viruses by always usin MSE. I don't want, and can't afford to get a virus attack, not to mention Im runnign windows 7 ultimate so I need the windows 7 updates too because the ultimate can be dodgy sometimes. Nb the update I cannot do is 1.4mb but I am anticipating windows will throw me a new update any day soon which could be anywhere from 30mb to 200mb and it could fail all of it leaving me prone to attacks.

I can post my specs, ... Read more

First, I have been running running Windows Security Essentials for about a year or so. When I did an update about 3 weeks ago, it refused to restart. I decided to do a repair/re-install. The install said that I needed to remove any anti-virus/anti-malware software I had. So I uninstalled my Malwarebytes, A-squared, and Spybot. I attempted another install. No go. Same error. When I checked my Security settings, I found that CyberDefender was installed. I cannot recall installing this and what's worse, I can't uninstall it! I tried to do a manual removal. No such luck. After a few hours of frustration, I installed Windows Defender (it works fine, it just won't do a daily scheduled scan for some reason), Malwarebyutes, and A-squared. Evrything works fine, but it bugs me that I cannot uninstall CyberDefender. Anything that refuses to uninstall worries me. What else is this thing doing? I tried Tom Coyote Forums (I used it years ago) and was directed to this site. I guess Tom Coyoyte Forums is no longer around.

Anyway, here is my dds.txt:

Hi everyone!I have this frustrating problem with an installation of Windows Live Essentials on a Windows 7 (64bit) machine. I previously had Windows Live Messenger and Mail installed, but then installed Microsoft Office Outlook to replace Windows Live Mail. I attempted to uninstall Windows Live Essentials to no avail. I think messed around it and have tried ever so many registry tweaks, cleaners and scripts to try and remove all traces of the Essentials suite. It seems completely uninstalled (even now I can see no sign of any Windows Live product). On reinstalling Windows Live Essentials, I now get an error which is highly frustrating:I have tried the fixes for similiar errors but yet again to no avail. I appreciate any answers ThanksJay

Hi,

I would be honoured to have some assistance regarding a possible infection on my computer.

Unfortunately, I believe my computer has been infected with a possible Rootkit\Backdoor Trojan Virus, which has disabled both Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials. When attempting to launch Windows Defender & MSE, I receive an error regarding: "Specified location path not found". I decided to look into the directory of both WD (%WINDIR%Program Files\Windows Defender) and MSE (%WINDIR%Program Files\Microsoft Security Client) and some of the icons have changed to shortcuts that point directly to "C:\Windows\system32\config." Even as an Administrator,  I'm unable to make even add write permissions to the folder as my access is denied.

I was able to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials but my Windows Defender will not launch. My issue is practically identical to the following topic in this forum:

Would anyone be able to assist me in this issue? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't get it. Twice i've tried to install windows live essentials, and both times is says that it succeeded. However, when i go to my start menu, there is no entry for Windows Live essentials, its not in "Program files" OR "Program Files(x86)" and its not even listed in "Program features". Its basically non-existent on my machine. all i wanted was to install movie maker. I open the installer, select the photo viewer/Movie Maker package, and click install. Then after a two minute wait, it tells me the install was successful and for me to click the close button to start using live essentials. I'm stumped! I only have one partition on my HDD, and the files are not there, so that rules out the files being my hard disk. And they were not installed on my flash drive. So does anyone what happened or where the files went?

I do not want a bing bar and I am wondering if I want any of the stuff listed for the Windows Live Essentials 2011.

Is three a good reason to install this update and if it is installed is it easy to remove bing and any other thinks I do not require like silverlight?

Mail installed without a hitch, but Photo gallery/movie maker refuses to install, giving the following error:

I can't find anything on the particular source, but alot of 0x80070643 errors, and all different solutions/different applications.

I reset my computer because Windows Live Mail was not connecting to the internet and was getting an error message saying that I have used the wrong password. Now, I still can't use WL Mail and Windows Essentials is still "installing" for the last several days. Consequently, I can't uninstall WL Mail or Windows Essentials or fix them. In addition, I think, because WLE is not installed officially, I can't see my saved videos and still get the same error message when I try to connect to WL Mail...error 0x80280006. I tried to reset my WL Mail password to no avail.
BTW, I'm using Windows 10 and maybe it is partly to blame?
I want to be able to use WL Mail and see my videos, but I don't know how. Please help. Thanks.

I can't find where those "newer" programs are on my computer. I uninstalled them from the programs list and deleted all the cache folders out of my App Data. I've restarted my computer, but nothing works. It still gives me the same error message.

Upon several fresh installations of Windows 7 SP1 on a formatted HDD, on a new computer that I have accumulated my windows will not update. I usually get a 8e5e03fa on the windows update window. All other software installs and works flawlessly.

At first I thought it was a rootkit or some sort and after scanning with Malwarebytes, GMER, DDS, Combofix, TDSKILLER, and even after changing hard drives the problem persists.

I have ran sfc /scan and attempted to fix errors to no avail. I ran it 3x as directed. I am not able to look or copy at the log file, it says I do not have permissions even though I am the only administrator and even tried to manually change the permissions, I do not have access to this log.

I have done the new root2 folder, the problem persists.

I have ran 2 microsoft update fixit tools. the problem persists.

I have ran the update stand alone installer and it crashes immediately with 0xc80003fa error.

I get this error when I try to install .net 4.0 so my graphics card drivers would work, HRESULT 0xc80003fa

Other tutorials that I have followed to no avail:

Unable to install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2

I am exhausted, can someone help me?

Here is a gallery I uploaded with screenshots of problems.

Thanks in advance to whoever can help!

Hi all,

Just have a quick question about installing Live Essentials 2011. I've tried and got the error message: Couldn't Install Program - You already have different build flavor of Live

So I need to uninstall my current version. But I want to be sure I won't lose everything (emails, contacts) I now have in Windows Live Mail. A new install will simply transfer everything into the 2011 version?

And I can deselect Messenger during install? I hate Messenger...

Thanks,
Tuck

Answer:Windows Live Essentials Install Question

E-mails and contacts should remain on your online mail account servers; as long as you don't have them set to delete the mail there after downloading, which I don't think anybody does anymore since e-mail account space allocation is usually very generous. You'll probably have to download/import them again to the new version of the client.
After uninstalling the Messenger, yes, indicate you want to choose which components of Live you want to download and leave Messenger off the list.

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

The other day I tried to install Windows Live Essentials on a fairly new installation of Windows 7 Proffesional 32bit. The installation came up with a message half way through saying it had failed but I wasn't in a rush to use any of the applications so just clicked out of it.

Today I went back to install them again but Windows Live Essentials installer says that all the apps are already installed. I have checked in Program Files and through out the start menu and they aren't installed. The uninstaller program isn't there either and the entry in add/remove programs in Control Panel doesn't exist.

I'm guessing the installer put in some registry entries for the programs but didn't get round to putting in a way to remove them. Does anyone have any other ideas or know which registry entries to start hacking away at (figure of speach obviously)?

I don't really want to do a system restore because I've installed about 10 other programs since then including my antivirus which is a pain to reactivate.

Hey Oli,

Do you have this file-> C:\Program Files\Windows Live\installer\wlarp.exe? if yes, double click on it, it'll ask you to repair or uninstall.

Otherwise I guess you'll need to use revo in hunter mode.

Also, try running the MS windows installer cleanup utility.

Windows live essentials update won't let my computer restart. When I finally let the update install since it kept popping up as an important once it installed the computer lite up but froze and wouldn't start up. There was short white line like a curser on the top left of the screen . I had to play with restart and control alt delete to get the thing to start again it took a long time . Then I went to system restore from before the update and things worked and it started. Then it happened again when it automaticly updated the software same problem. How can I get that update to quite flashing on my screen and not keep messing up my computer. I'm not too computer savy is there a way to hide this stupid update or something i don't want to keep going through this. I am working from another computer now.

With little that I know, this information may be totally irrelevent.
Just an information that you may or may not know ....You need to have SP2 installed plus .....

Excerpt :
All of the Windows Live Essentials programs will run only on Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit editions), Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit editions) with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and the Platform Update for Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008 with SP2 and the Platform Update for Windows Server 2008.

Hello,
I'm using Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate edition, and every app I installed is working. But when I go to the Windows Live website, I can't download windows live essentials! When I click on "Download now" browser just keeps loading and loading but nothing happens. Tried with Chrome and IE, and I got same result.
Then, I got an idea - I have copied wlsetup-web.exe file from my laptop to the USB flash memory, and then tried installing. File runs, but I can't get farther than "Prepairing the installation" because I got some error which say that I'm not connected to the Internet, although I am.

Anyone have this problem?

Regards.

I used bleepingcomputer.com for the directions to remove the FAKE microsoft security essentials virus/trojan. I ran RKILL and used (after updating) malwarebytes. It takes almost 3 hours to run a full scan, and I've ran it three times, and it's running now. I got the message and pop up talked about here first... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...ssentials-alert - and I took care of it following the instructions. Then I started to get the pop up about explorer had crashed and will restart. My windows bar with the time and start menu button dissipated and came back over and over again. Then it just stopped. This is after running rkill, following the instructions, malwarebytes and restarting. I log in from the login screen and everything appears normal for a second, then I get the explorer has stopped working or crashed message and my screen goes completely black. I can pull up task manager to get to chrome browser and my stuff on the pc, but windows explore (not internet explorer, but the one that runs windows) just isn't working. After I ran it, it seemed to work just fine, for one sitting, then this happened. What can I do now? I hard drive wipe is not an option as someone stole my external, and I have almost all of my hd on here saving my music and video until I can by another one. Also, on a side note... there are two users on this pc. The other one is notorious for downloading and being stupid with my machine...HOWEVER this time, it looks like me. As... Read more
