Windows Runs Installation of Program When I Start Program

Question: Windows Runs Installation of Program When I Start Program

I installed Weathrbug Plus and for some odd reason recently when I run it Windows runs the installation for the program. When I run the prograsm I get the typical "Preparing to install..." abnd then tyhe 'Configuring Weatherbug. I've been in contact with Weatherbug Support all day and we can't seem to find an answer.
I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials.
This is a clean install of Windows 7. I haven't used any other real-time security software other than MSE.
I disabled MSE and tried it and got the same results.

Any help will be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Windows Runs Installation of Program When I Start Program

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I run a small business and a few weeks ago had my laptop stolen. I had a windows password as well as folder passwords on the computer and of course none of that stopped the person from getting into our email and files. They tried to order credit cards from our accounts and on and on. It's been a real mess to say the least. I have a new laptop now..it's a dell with windows 8. I am adding the prey program I have been told about to help me find my laptop if stolen but I want to add encryption as well. I would like something simple where I can put in a password at startup so the entire drive is encrypted but once I'm in my computer I can do my work. Can someone recommend a encryption program that fits the bill?

Answer:Best encryption program that runs from start up

Bitlocker comes with Windows 8.1 Pro. We use it on a few machines and it has worked flawlessly.

When I start up certain programs, the floppy drive starts running but the file has nothing to do with the floppy drive. The file opens up with no problems, it is just annoying, and appears to start my program up slower.

Answer:Floppy drive runs after I start program

There is usually a shortcut on most programs such as Word and XL that allows the last 4+ documents viewed to be quickly accessed. If one of these was on floppy then the Program will try to access it ready for quick linking

I am running an older Dos based accounting program AccPac Plus.

The program worked fine until yesterday.

The command line for running the program is
R:\PLUS.EXE /v3 /Uc:\accpac /Sc:\accpac /Pc:\accpac

The /U /P and /S are to designate locations of personal startup files for the program.

If I run it using Start/Run it runs ok.

If I run it using a desktop shortcut, which I have done for years, it won't find the personal startup files on my C drive, but rather use default files located on the R drive.

I am running XP PRO SP2. Last XP update was last week and I have used the program many times since.

The only thing out of the ordinary is that someones USB flash drive the I put used on my machine had the following virus on it. W32.SillyFDC

Symantec caught it right away. I have since scanned my machine fully and run a chkdsk.

No other users are experiencing the same problem.

Answer:Program runs fine from Start/Run but not from a desktop shortcut

Ok... Hi guys.

To give some computer background info.
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit with 4gb ram. (Any more info can be provided when neccessary)

I was on the computer when i noticed on of my programs that is "attached" to my taskbar had that default Windows icon, it was white with a little program sign in the middle. I tried running it, and it was fine. As I frantically tried to find a solution, i noticed that most of my programs were like that. From Office programs, to programs like Sony Vegas, 3Ds Max, Turbotax, Steam, Safari, Skype, Windows Live Messenger, and many more. Not all are messed up though, some are completely fine. The weird thing is that I can run all of these normally. I tried going into the properties of the program and change the icon. When i clicked to change it, it said couldnt not locate the original one, and prompted me to look for a new one to use. I redirected the icon directory to the ie: /program files/windows live/messenger/wlmicon.jpg, and clicked apply, then ok. Once i did this nothing happened, and when i went back into the properties, I could see the new image i chose, hidden under the ugly White default windows icon.

This is really bugging me, since many of my programs are looking like they are messed up, but they're in fact fine. I searched some stuff on this on google to no avail.

Can you guys please help me out, thanks!

Any info needed about my computer will be provided, i will respond ASAP, but when i get back f... Read more

Basically is there a program that will only run other programs in its window? I have a few programs that popup all the time but have poor or wonky support so I'd like to keep them minimized. Autohot key is not working BTW and most command lines are only for the first run not keep.

Answer:Program that runs a program in a window

What do you mean by "popup all the time"? Are they running when you log in, or randomly coming up, and do you need them?

hi!i got c inatalled in in my laptop of windows 7 os.when i did a program its getting compiled but not running .output is not shown.why is this happening?

Answer:does c program runs in windows 7

Programs compiled in C do run with Windows 7. The CPU doesn't know or care what language a program was written in, it is just a series of instructions. If a program doesn't work then it has a problem. Just because a program compiles successfully doesn't mean it is without error. There isn't enough information provided here to even make an intelligent guess at the nature of the problem.

Hi there,
I got a major problem after I tried to install Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition trial version which was download from microsoft website.
It was so:
Installation was in the progress at that moment installing .NET framework 3.5
I was using Daemon tools for installing from the .iso image
i think that I unmounted that image from daemon tools
then I was asked to show where the installation file is
I mounted the image to daemon tools again
I looked ok, and the installation continued, but...
The progress bar became 0% and nothing happened
I wait for some time, but still nothing happened
Then I tried to cancel the installation in normal way, by clicking on cancel button, I got a message saying that installation will be cancelled after current task (installing the framework) will be finished
Then nothing happened again, only the Cancel button was disabled
I closed the installation by brute force (I do not remeber how, but probably using task manager). Then I had some updates waiting for windows, I wanted them to be installed.
When I clicked on Install under Windows updates installation manager (or smth like that) I got a message saying that another installation is in progress, cannot install. Then I used Task manager to end the processed that were left from previous installation.
There were three processes, I killed them.
Then Windows updates could install. After I was asked to restart the computer for the updates could be finished, I approved.
Then the problem starte... Read more

Have a client with 5x locations, I'd like to find a simple monitoring program that will show the status of the broadband connections of the satellite offices. Router to router VPN tunnels between the 4x satellites and mothership.

Would be nice it it would run in Windows.
Routers at all sites are Linksys/Cisco RV0 series. Satellites are just 1 - 2 PC branch offices.

Unfortunately mixed DSL and cable environment (I prefer to have all sites on same type of broadband from the same ISP if I can, but not do-able for this setup). Combined with the RV0 and their occasional tendancy to drop the VPN tunnels....the accountant at the main office sorta needs to know when a tunnel drops so she can log into the main RV0 and "reconnect" the tunnel.

Hi...

I bought Satellite A300-15A yesterday and after completing the Vista installation process, I tried to install "Alcohol" but my notebook shutdown and now I'm not able to start notebook.
It is not starting in any mode.

I forget to make recovery discs. I think Alcohol is not compatible with Vista. Error which i receive is below.

Can anyone tell me the solution?
Please help urgently

"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: blah blah... "

Answer:Satellite A300-15A does not start up after Alcohol program installation

Sounds like a familiar problem to me, as I had the same one with the Daemon tools. After installing those tools I couldn't start my Windows XP any more. I guess it somehow mixed up some drivers or registry entries, but not sure about that.

Ok, you can try to deinstall the tool by first starting Vista in safe mode (press F8 before Windows boot up).
You should be then able to enter Vista without problem.

Every now and then (every 5 minutes or so) my cursor will turn into the hourglass for a split second, then turn back. I'm assuming this means something is being initiated in the background periodically. Over time, this slows down my computer. At the very least, it makes me lag tremendously in online games for a few seconds (which makes CS and UT2004 pretty much unplayable).

I've tried running the latest AdAware and Spybot: Search and Destroy. Neither solved the problem. These seem like symptoms of generic spyware, but I've still been unable to put an end to it. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

(I'm using windows XP, if that makes any difference)

I know this program will not be familiar to many Windows users, but it is a program which has run on all the previous Windows OSs since Windows XP and possibly before that. But Windows 8.1 has really gone to town with the problems it has caused me, see below, can anyone out there help please.
I installed Windows 8.1 when it was released a few months ago and since then have had a problem with Virtual Acorn RiscPC AdjustSA. It is not causing me too much trouble as I now know what and where the problem lies. The problem is how do I stop the problem occurring in the first place?.
I run VA as stated on my Windows 8.1 Laptop, and keep all my bank and password info on my real Risc PC when I wish to update my Banking info I run the program in VRPC and obtain the DATA from the RealRisc PC via the LAN all OK, but if I have some files which are out of date on the VA and download the up to date files from Real RiscPC windows insists on saving them in a different location than expected, not on the HardDisc4 which is in the VirtualAcorn folder on the C Drive but in another location which is also named HardDisc4 this file is located at C drive, User, Allan, Appdata, Local, VirtualStore, ProgramFile, Virtual Acorn, VirtualRiscPC-adjustSA, HardDisc4 and there are the new file which I have brought across from the real Risc PC, and they appear when the VARPC is running to be in the HardDisc4, but if one looks for them there by opening the C drive they do not exist where one would expect to find... Read more

Answer:Program runs correctly in Windows 7 but not 8.1 (Virtural Acorn)

I have been advised to Google"appdata local virtualstore". On viewing a few of the search results it looks likely that either my user account or the way I am downloading the files from the real risc pc to the Harddisc4 directory in Adjust-SA which is in a sub directory inside Program Files on the C drive doesn't have sufficient permissions to write to the Program Files directory, or presumably a sub directory inside it, so windows redirects the files to the virtualstore for the user account.
I cannot say that I understand any of this and still do not know how to over come my problem, can any one through any light on the subject?

Have been trying to figure out what is causing this.
Every time I open my homepage and certain other webpages (this site in particular), a window pops up asking me to wait while windows configures the last program that I installed. This being Adobe Captivate.
I check the task manager and have noted that IDRIVER.EXE and two, sometimes three, occurences of MSIEXEC.EXE are opened and running.
I need to click the CANCEL button two or three times to get the window to go away. During the time that the pop-up window is open, IE7 stops downloading and then resumes when the window closes. BTW, pop-up blocker is turned on.
IDRIVER.EXE is an InstallShield (IS) routine.
At first I thought it was a problem with Captivate, so I uninstalled it and ran a registry cleanup to make sure that the program was truly gone. When I opened IE7, now the pop-up reappeared, only this time, it was trying to configure the program that was installed prior to Captivate, namely Quickbooks. Having since reinstalled Captivate, now the config window is back to working on Captivate.
A little background, about two weeks ago the Win O/S partition on my system went south and I had to format the partition and reinstall Windows along with all adjoining programs. So the system is definitely clean.
I can't seem to find where IS connects the opening of webpages with trying to run a configure of the last program installed. Also, Captivate runs fine. One interesting thing is that the window config pop-up doesn't... Read more

Answer:Opening webpages in IE7 runs Windows config for last program installed

Found an MSI file and a folder in the C:\WINDOWS\INSTALLER that are related to the problem. Temporarily renamed the file and folder and now get only one message when opening websites in IE7 and IS is trying run the installer. This message reverts to an notice that the file/folder needed can't be found. So I know that I'm closing in on the problem. Somewhere, possible in the registry, there's a setting that is starting IS but the connection to only popping up in IE7 is most confusing.

As per BOOPME directions this new thread has been started. From original thread here - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1967273.The Computer is a Dell Lattitude 620 with windows XP SP-3The issues are that the computer will not allow many programs to run "access is denied errors" or simply the program is killed when the icon is clicked on. This started when fraudware was present. I had removed the fraudware by removing the drive and attaching it to another win XP machine and running Microsoft security essentials, MBAM, Spybot S&D and Trend micro housecall scanner. I have followed the directions for steps 6-9 from "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help, Instructions for receiving help in cleaning your computer". I had created another user with Aministrators rights to run this. Of note to sign off after creating the new user I had a message box for the MCI Command Handling Window - "Could not Close" error message hung on close.Step 6 - Disable your CD Emulation Software - goodStep 7 - Download and Run DDS which will create a log of programs running on your computer. Done created log files Step 8 - Create a GMER Log - downloaded and when clicked to run GMER is killed immeadiately. it will not run.Just a little more information about above XP Pro, The directions were followed after creating a new user with admin privilages. still waiting to hear anything.EDIT: Posts merged ~BP

Hi, I am running Windows 7 x64 on an ASUS g73 laptop and recently got hit with this error. The computer would startup only to hit this blue screen and restart. It would also not boot in any of the safe modes. I have read that it probably has to do with a malware infected .dll file but have no idea how I would go about fixing it.

Here is the log I got from frst, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,

One of the computers in my office came up with this error when turned on this morning:

STOP: C0000135 The program can?t start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program

It took me a while to get to the error, because, as the computer's running Win 7 Pro, it was skipping the BSOD, and going straight to startup repair; when that didn't work, I then disabled the automatic restart option, and then found this error, which I've never seen before. I did do some googling, and found several references to this being either virus or corrupt registry entries, but I wanted to check in here first before I started doing anything to the computer.

Could somebody please steer me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance,

Hello,

Yesterday evening, while administering my Minecraft server, a message saying my Adobe Calson Pro font (the first one in my Fonts folder) was corrupted appeared in the notification area. That was the first message of this type that I had ever seen. A second message appeared after a few seconds, saying another file was corrupted (I think it was a system file, but I don't remember). Good Afternoon,

I have another student computer displaying the above stop code. The computer had been booting fine until the last restart I did now it will not boot to the desktop just to the blue screen with the above stop code. It had been infected by a virus that displayed multiple fake systems messages but I thought I had got rid of everything by using MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials. This student had been running without virus protection for who knows how long.

FRST log is attached

My computer has been stuck in restart loop for 2 hours now and it can't seem to stop! I tried using system repair but that does not seem to be of any help at all!
I'am so worried! It also keep showing a blue screen saying STOP: C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program .

I've tried to find solutions and many are saying this is related to AVG the anti-virus but i don't even have that anti-virus
I would appreciate a tons if anyone could help me! Thank SO much!

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.

Hello,

I work as a computer technician at a small private college on the Eastern shore of Maryland. I am mainly a Macintosh technician but I am trying to boost my skills with Windows more. With all that said, I had a student drop off a computer to our help desk running Windows 7 with the error of "STOP: C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program". I initially removed the hard drive and connected to one of our other Windows machines and scanned it externally using MalwareBytes and MSE. There were a number of infected items that both programs removed. I then reinstalled the hard drive and got the stop error again. After some Googling and seeing recommendations about AVG I check the Program Files via Command Prompt in the Recovery Console and AVG is not present.

I have used my box of tricks and need more help. If someone could help that would be great.

Matt

Hi, I'm new here and excited to see if I can receive any help.

So my friends computer was working just fine until last night. We moved the computer and then got the error log every time we start it up. From what I've been reading our problem could be exactly this guys problem

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic444580.html

We've done the regedit method to see if anything was wrong or different, but nothing was. So I can assume it's that consrv.dll file thing that's the issue. from what I've read in that post, we need a log thing, so I've already gone ahead and used the repair program and got the dds log

Hello diintzke,

Welcome to the forum.

Please copy and paste the logs instead of attaching it unless otherwise requested.

You have a dual boot system and FRST has scanned the Windows XP. Are you technical enough to remove the HD with Windows XP and run the FRST again or we should use another method to scan the system and recover it?

Windows 98

I was having problems with the loveletter virus but have the computer clean now except for two things.
1. When I run Adware SE 1.05 it runs till like 30,000 files or whatever then freezes and in task manager says not responding.

2. When I try to run HJT it takes right off and goes to about the end then it to freezes and task manager says it is not responding.

Spybot runs fine
I have IE-Spyad
Script Defender
reg seeker runs fine
Trojan Remover runs fine
AVG Runs fine
it is just those two programs that hang up and I am pretty surre there are some things in the HJT Log that need to come out cause it was hijacked by a skyinet. The very first time I ran HJT I took out the skyinet in R1 so I could get back on the Internet on my home page. But ever since then is when it started hanging, and Adware has always froze. I am afraid I have everything out of it now but need to check that Log and can't. Can someone help me?? Does anyone know why this would happen?? Need some advice really bad must have this computer back by tommorw, Thanks

Answer:Solved: Windows 98-HJT Program runs till it is almost done the freezes in reg & safemode,Plea

Finally started working, I will close this, sorry

In Windows 10/8/7/Vista, when you installs an older version software or program which is not compatible to work with the latest version of Windows, A Program Compatibility Assistant will appear to warn you about the incompatibility of program and shows you options to install it with the recommended settings. It can automatically detect problems with older programs.
The Program Compatibility Assistant detects known compatibility issues in older programs. After you have run an older program in this version of Windows, it notifies you if there is a problem and offers to fix it the next time you run the program. If the compatibility issue is serious, the Program Compatibility Assistant might warn you or block the program from running. If that happens, you’ll have the option to check online for possible solutions. Changes made by Compatibility Assistant: It depends on the problem, but any changes made are related to how Windows runs the program. No changes are made to the program, itself. For example, the Program Compatibility Assistant can resolve conflicts with User Account Control, a security feature in Windows that can help make your computer safer. Or, it can run the program in a mode that simulates earlier versions of Windows. The changes that Program Compatibility Assistant makes are done automatically, so you don’t need to make them. Sorry but defeat has been swallowed. after a month of DIY, I must ask the experts

Problem
3 minutes to open up a program at start up, however as i run programs the computer gets faster. Analysing programs such as anti virus and spyware really help speed it up. But restart or go to another user and it slows again to a stop.
Tried deleteing programs which may conflict with my SP2 upgrade, such as Norton anti virus and windows firewalls, no difference.
I have tried Stinger anti virus, Ad adware personal and Spyhunter. all found and solved problems but not my major speed problem.

My CPU is always 100% with cpuidle.exe normally 98% of this.

I use Broadband @ 768bpm

I tried to kill the Trojan virus with the anti-virus software by Tencent yesterday, but I fail to log in my Windows 7 (64bit) after restart even in safe mode. There is error with "STOP: C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program". I never used AVG and searched solution from internet to change "consrv" to "winsrv" in the registry, but this does not work.

That why I seek help here and I have scaned my log with "FRST64.exe" as below. Could someone help to provide the solution to fix the error. Thanks for your great help in advance.

Hi,

Tried to boot my computer this morning and was greeted with "C0000135 The program can't start because %hs is missing. Try resintalling the program" message. I've been scouring the web in search of a solution but can't find anything helpful apart from other similar threads on here. I've scanned with frst64.exe and got the log. I'm hoping someone can help me solve this as I have a lot of college work saved that would like to have a copy of. If I can't fix this I guess I could try boot Linux off of a USB to try rescue some files. Thanks for any help.

I used an uninstaller to remove some files as the left over bits were slowing my computer down, the uninstaller was called REVO Uninstaller, but i unknowingly deleted something important for the start menu it appears because the start menu no longer displays the system files and folders and programs i installed.
http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/y...Untitled-1.jpg

So now, every program i had is still there, but i can't access it from the start menu, i have to go into my computer, then find the programs company name, then access it. I tried creating a new account but it has also affected that one so i am stumped as to what happened. I can ordinarily solve most of my computer's problems, but this one i cant seem to fix.

It looks like you are running in Classic Mode? Right click the Start button/Properties and choose Start Menu. instead of Classic Start Menu. You may be using a Default profile.
Go to C:\Users open up your original User Profile name. Copy the Start Menu, Desktop, Favorites, Music, Pictures etc and paste them into the new profile name you are using to log into.

So, I saw this web site as I scoured the internet and thought I'd see if you could help me out. I am running Windows 7 x64 and I did have a virus on the computer and used a program called Hitman Pro to remove it and it said it did, but I reboot and I get that BSOD error. Thank you.

Hello everyone,

I am currently trying to make a program start when another one opens. I don't want to have to use batch scripts since I have a few programs I would need to do this for and a batch script would make them not open correctly. I started to use task scheduler but I cant find what event ID I need to use. It would also be nice if the program ended when the first program shuts down. Any help would be great!

Hi,

I am helping a friend who has a Dell Inspiron N5105 laptop running Vista Home Premium.

It was supplied only recently as part of an insurance claim settlement - she was told it had just been built for her specifically so she expected it to be problem free.

The internet works fine and she can check her email and facebook, etc - but although Skype 4.2 is pre-installed she cannot logon to the service using her ID and password, and neither can I, it just says for ages "Signing in" and eventually "Skype cannot connect to your account - for help click here" but that link doesn't work either.

She has asked for a password reset and logged onto the Skype website to complete this successfully, but the client still does the above - and the same with my own account.

Also, the screen to activate her copy of MS Office XP is corrupted (just showing as blank box!).

To try to resolve both problems, I backed up her files (only a few) and did a factory reset from the recovery partition. The Skype problem remains.

The Office activation wizard now offers to activate over the internet ... but says it can't make a connection to the server, and when I try to use the telephone method it refuses to give us a phone number to call.

I have connected the laptop to a different internet connection and the problems remain.

She tells me that her boss was also unable to activate the latest version of Office that they have too, so this isn't just a Office XP issu... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 program installation woes

I would doubt it is a "brand new computer" Vista for an OS (vista's mainstream support is already over) XP office (even older), Skype 4.2 (current version is 5.1.110.)

If there is a warranty I would use it. If not can we get the event viewer logs from it to see whats going on?

Please provide us with your Event Viewer administrative logs by following these steps:
Click Start Menu
Type eventvwr into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
Right click eventvwr.exe and click Run as administrator
Expand Custom Views
Click Administrative Events
Right click Administrative Events
Save all Events in Custom View As...
Save them in a folder where you will remember which folder and save as Errors.evtx
Go to where you saved Errors.evtx
Right click Errors.evtx -> send to -> compressed (zipped) folder
Upload the .zip file here, to skydrive or a file sharing service

This is something quite different that I hope someone here will be able to help with.A near neighbour (silver surfer like me) bought a TomTom ONE and attempted to install the PC support software; TomTom HOME. When she started installation all appears (from what she says) to have progressed normally but when it came to installation location it seems she chose to install it in `MS Autoroute`. I have found a shortcut for TomTom HOMEWinlatest in the `My Documents` folder but a search has revealed no sign of anything relating to TomTom HOME. When the icon in `My Documents` is clicked it attempts to open `MS Autoroute`. I have tried to reinstall the software but it gets as far as the `Preparing Setup` screen, flashes and closes.Obviously she has managed to change something fundamental but with my limited knowledge I really have no other ideas as to where to look. I should add that she has no internet access (doesn`t want it) but really should back up the TomTom as otherwise she may lose the content of the memory card.Any help would be appreciated.

Hello everyone!

I finally built my very first desktop from scratch and it's running beautifully, so lots of thanks to everyone in the hardware forum for helping me out!

The only problem I'm facing, is the SSD and HDD configuration. A lot of programs have trouble launching or running when installed on my HDD, which is incredibly frustrating.

My SSD (C drive) is my boot drive, and will be used to install demanding games on (right now, I have Witcher 3 installed on it, which is running perfectly).

My HDD (E drive) is my secondary drive, where my documents, files, and relatively less demanding (or less played) games are stored. I tried to install several games on this drive, but all have launching issues.

For example:
Minecraft: I installed my old Minecraft, which didn't run until I manually installed a .minecraft folder in Users\Username\Roaming, so it seems it had trouble pathing to the Users folder.
League of Legends: The downloaded client didn't launch from the Downloads folder (which I had moved to my E drive earlier for storage purpose using 'Properties > Move') , I had to copy it into the desktop (C drive) for it to launch and once the game had installed (on the E drive) it wouldn't launch either. Have not found any way around this yet, so it's currently on my C drive.
The Sims 3: I was expecting trouble with this ancient game anyway, but like both games mentioned before, it simply doesn't launch and tells me 'S... Read more

I am trying to transfer the program MagicInfo from a machine I believe is about to crash over to a different computer. Both computers run Windows 7. The old computer says it runs Windows 7 under properties, but the display looks like it is pre Windows XP, with
the grey taskbar. I called MagicInfo tech support and they told me I needed to change the formatting of the USB in order to get the program to transfer. In all formats except NFTS, I could not get anything to back up to the flash drive and had to copy the
files from the C drive. In the NFTS format, I can get it to back up directly to the flash drive, but when I bring it to the other machine, the restore wizard still cannot find a backup to restore from. I am not sure how to proceed from here, and I have to
get this done soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Enabled Sharing on the USB and tried to get it to work via the network. Found it in the network and it says Windows does not detect any files to restore from. Is it even possible to restore this program in this way?

Thanks!

I have an old program that runs off of a cd, which is a hassle. (Not to mention , what happens if the cd breaks?) Is there a way to copy the cd to my hard drive and run it from there, instead of having to run it from the cd? If so, how would I go about it? Would I simply copy it to my Program Files folder? I currently have Windows Vista 32-bit SP1. I attempted to install Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate on my Vista machine and the installation hangs. I've let it go thinking it'll clear up after a few minutes but I've waited up to 35 minutes and nothing happens.

I've tried rebooting, installing in safe mode (which won't let me even open the installation file), turning off anti-virus programs and other programs running in the background... Nothing seems to help. The installation program just freezes and hangs there until I CTRL/ALT/DEL it out.

Hello,
I am looking for assistance with fixing a family members computer.  He was trying to solve a computer problem on a laptop running windows 7 that was preventing their external cd drive on their laptop from working, and googled what to do and saw a recommendation to install winrar and use it for something.  Hegoogled winrar and installed it.  He lost the ability to open programs from his quick launch bar or start menu at this point.  For example the Google Chrome button became blank, although if he right clicked it, he had all the correct menus come up, and most of them still worked (but not for all his other programs).

I assume that he downloaded a malware infected copy of WinRar, but A) an hour searching the internet didn't pop up similar cases, which made me think this might be more unusual and even if so, I am not 100% sure how to get his applications to work again so as to proceed with cleaning his computer out.

Given that he was actively having problems with his computer before this happened, I figured there might be overlapping issues, so I am looking for advice on how to go about troubleshooting his issues.

Thanks for any help.

PS: I have several screenshots of his issue, but didn't want to post them or link to them because A) the rules didn't really mention that one way or another and I browsed a few topics and no one else had, so I figured it is perhaps not accepted.

Answer:Cannot access programs in Windows 7 after program installation

Not sure how WinRAR would help in giving them access to their external CD drive. WinRAR is a program that is used to "unzip" files that are compressed. It can uncompress files compressed with just about any compression algorithm. It is unlikely WinRAR is the cause of the issues he is now having.

Your first guess is the most likely one. Because WinRAR is free, there are a number of sites it can be downloaded from. Not all those sites contain uninfected versions.

I would recommend running a full anti-virus scan on that computer. What AV program is currently installed on it? You may also want to check the log files of that AV program, as well as the "quarantined files" section. If it is infected, don't attempt to make any other changes until the malware is cleaned out.

Post back your results after you've run a full scan.

Ok I've got a problem with my Empire Earth game.
I wanted to install the game on my new Windows 7 computer, I was able to install it on my Vista computer. So when I put the CD in and clicked install, a few moments later a pop-up relating to Autorun appeared, it said The installation program could not be found.
"E:\Setup.exe"
I kept clicking install and ended up with another pop-up
E:\SETUP.EXE is not a valid Win32 application.

I had lost the system requirements for the game, and I'm not sure if it had something to do with them.

My system requirements are as shown:
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_rtm.090713-1255)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

Memory: 2048MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 2048MB RAM
Page File: 1769MB used, 2325MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Empire Earth won't start installing "The installation program could not be found"

Have you tried starting the installer in compatibility mode?

Right click on "setup.exe", select properties and navigate to the compatibility tab. Enable compatibility mode and then select an OS from the list (I suggest running the program in Windows XP compatibility mode first).

Additionally you can try running the installer as administrator. Just right click on the installer and select "Run as administrator" from the menu.

Hi DirtRider,

It's no doubt being run from the registry or hidden by Windows from 3rd party apps.

You could try running 'msconfig' from the start menu and see if it's present there.

Question: Program runs slow

First, haven't posted in a long time and hope this is the correct area.
Second, All other applications seem to run OK. most of the time - sometimes I crash a program!

OK! Here's my problem:
I purchased a program "SWiSH Max 4." It works, but when I press the play button - which is like a debug/run action - it takes an unnatural amount of time to start (around 15 seconds). The support side of SWiSH mentioned a possible conflict with other programs, but I don't know where to start looking or how.

My System:

4 Gig Ram

Thanks for any assistance / Sorry if I'm in the wrong area :-)

Hi,I have just bought and istalled an HP PSC 1350 All-In-One Printer, I cannot be sure it is the cause of the problem, but it is the most likely candidate as that is the last thing I installed together with the HP software.Anyway since the installation I have a problem with at least two of my programs (Quicken 2004 and Memory-Map OS2004) When I click the shortcut the hourglass cursor appears briefly and then dissapears, nothing else happens. On investigation I have discovered that the process starts (qw.exe and MMNav.exe)and is using a significant portion of the memory but none of the CPU, hower the application itself doesn't start.I have tried re-installing both programs to no effect, and I attempted system restore which as usual failed to roll back to a previous state.Any suggestions? If not I will try un-installing the HP software although I don't really want to cripple my printer by doing so.ThanksDavid

That might be a cause of a virus, or an anti-virus? try doing a scan.
If you dont have an anti-virus, Download Kaspersky here: http://www.kaspersky.com/
and install it. [EDIT BY MODERATOR: removed illegal offer]

If it finds a virus, try removing it, if it still keeps popping up, reboot your comp, and tap F8 on when it starts booting up, then select "safe mode", then run Kaspersky in safe mode, and leave it to scan.

I need to run two computers running each running a copy of the same program, or any program, but with one mouse. For example, if you click on something, both programs would be clicked identically. Any actions or usage of the mouse would occur at the same time on both computers. Is this possible? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Need to run same program on two PC one mouse runs both

I do not know. But I doubt it could work, because even if thetwo computers are identical and running identical software, their internal timing would not be synchronized, so that mousemovements would not be interpreted identically. When youmove the mouse, the motion would be detected and actedon by one computer before the other computer detected themotion, and the mouse pointers would end up in differentlocations. Hmmmm.... Unless you use a tablet that outputsabsolute location instead of motion.... Hmmmm. You wouldstill have to watch to see that both computers received andinterpreted the position input identically. My job has a windows nt server and 14 win nt sp6 machines. I had pluged in a win xp machine to see if it would play nicely with my win nt machines and with my server. All looks good until I start to use our main program, which is a dos program. The win xp machine runs great, there is a very noticeable delay in retreiving the data from the server for the win nt machines. What is the cause and the fix for this problem? I have also read in a posting that the win nt while running a dos program will use 100% of the memory, could this also be one of my problems? Is there a common cure for any of these problems?

Answer:Dos Program runs slow with win nt & win xp

WELCOME DALE!!!

First, eh, NT and XP, I don't know if they do play nicely, so keep that in the back of your mind. Are ALL dos operations like this, or only XP? What is this dos program you speak of? I know ms dos itself, but you said something that looked like it USES dos to run, is it dos or something else?

Also, make sure your systems are synced, a bad time sync can cause data loss.

I installed a program on my XP Pro (SP3) machine and it installed fine - including the drivers. At no point did the 'Install for all users' prompt appear and it is NOT an old program - it's fairly new. But, when I double-click the icon to run it, the hourglass mouse cursor flashes on and off... then nothing. It simply will not run. However, if I right-click and use Run As... and then run as Administrator with the admin password, the program runs fine - as does double-clicking the desktop icon when actually logged in as Administrator. My 'normal' XP user account is an administrator type account - not a limited user and I can do everything that the Administrator account can do - apart from run this one program. :)I contacted support for the program and they confirmed that this was not normal so to confirm the problem was with my XP I installed it on my laptop (also XP Pro) and indeed it runs fine - even when not run as Administrator.Any suggestions on where to start looking 'under the hood' on my main machine. Re-installing XP is an option I know, but it's my main programming machine and it takes days to get everything installed and back to normal, so that really is a last resort...Thanks in advance for any suggestions...TB

Choose 'Close' to terminate the application". Pressed 'Ignore', did not response until the third time then a dialog appeared showing "NTVDM.EXE has stopped working" and "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available".

Went into that program's properties and tried Normal, Maximize, and Minimize. Vista ran complete only with Minimize but, of course, could not see anything.

Running Win7.
I have a 22" LCD and my 42" LCD TV hooked up to the computer.

For playing movies on the TV, I can simply drag them across, thats fine, no problem.
But when it comes to playing games, it always wants to run it on the default monitor, so I have to go in, change primary monitor to the TV. This of course moves all my icons to the TV and once I am done playing I have to switch everything back and move the icons back.

Is there a way to tell a specific program which monitor to use without having to go through this? If windows itself can't, are there any programs that will do this?

I'm pretty sure UltraMon will do this... can't remember for sure, haven't used it for a while.

There is a trial version here...

I ran the DDS program twice but was never able to get the 'attach.txt' or the 'dds.txt' files to generate. The black window opened and the program ran for about 15 min. (instead of 3-5 min.), using dots at the bottom of the window to indicate progress. Eventually it stopped making the 'progress dots' but nothing further happened. When I ran it on another computer that does not have any problems it ran about 3-4 min. and correctly produced the two TXT files. Is there any way to overcome this? Should I try it in safe mode? Is there any way to produce the needed info?

Answer:DDS program runs but produces no log files

If you cannot get DDS to work, please try this instead. Please download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.Note: You will need to run this tool while connected to the Internet so it can download HijackThis if it is not located on your system. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding Rist attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.Double-click on RSIT.exe to start the program. If using Windows Vista, be sure to Run As Administrator.Click Continue after reading the disclaimer screen.Leave the drop down box set to default: "List/folders created or modified in the last 1 month (30 days). When the scan is complete, a text file named log.txt will automatically open in Notepad.Save the log file to your desktop and copy/paste the contents into a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here.Important: Be sure to mention that you tried to follow the Prep Guide but were unable to get DDS to run.If RSIT did not work, then reply back here.

This happened when a re-instal of win2000 did not complete. I am constantly annoyed with the instal pop up window. Has anyone come across this problem and has anyone a solution without a reformat and instal?

Answer:Instal runs when a program is run in win 2000 Pro

I have not read about an instal pop-up window before. I do know that when a reinstal is incomplete/interrupted (after windows 2000 setup has copied temporary installation files to the hard disk), you will get a "dual boot" option screen when you start the computer, giving you the choice of "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Setup" as the default, and "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" (which is your normal OS) as the 2nd option. If it applies to your case, read on.To get rid of that (and the temporary installation files), you need to (1) edit the C:\boot.ini file; and (2) delete the temporary installation folder copied to your hard disk.To edit boot.ini, right click My Computer icon, Properties, Advanced tab, select Startup and Recovery. For the default operating system, click the drop down list and select "Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect as the default. Click OK, OK.Then use My Computer or Explorer to go to your local disk C drive. Click Tools on the menu, select Folder Options, View tab. Tick "Show all hidden files and folders", untick "Hide all known file extensions", and untick "Hide protected operating system files". Click OK.You should now see the file boot.ini under the C drive.Right click boot.ini and select "opens with". Then select Notepad. Boot.ini will open in Notepad. Now delete one of the lines under [operating systems] that reads C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Setup"This ought to be the first line under [op... Hi guys,

I successfully used a macro recording application called QuicKeys on my old XP machine with no issues or problems.

Now that I have upgraded to WIndows 7 the applicaton no longers runs correctly i.e. it records the keystrokes/mouse movements ok, but on playback it halts when it reaches a mouse playback and generates a step failed error message.

I've tried running it both as a Standard user and also as an Administrator, but the problem still occurs.

The only solution appears to be to turn the UAC completely off (even lowest setting still results in the above problem). Only then does the application run without a problem.

I am guessing that somehow the mouse movement playback is being blocked by the UAC (no prompts), but I would have thought that running it with full admin rights would have by-passed the UAC.

Also tried running it with the "task scheduler" method which some users employ to avoid UAC issues, but still get the same result.

Are there any gurus out there with the solution?

Many thanks,

Pete

Answer:Program only runs correctly when UAC is switched OFF

Hi Pete and welcome to SevenForums!

This can happen with older programs that haven't been modified for UAC. You could try to find a newer program that supports Win 7. A quick search online gave me this: QuicKeys Alternatives and Similar Software - AlternativeTo.net

Hi
Where and how can I find installation files belonging to a program already installed on my PC? I bought a job lot of CD labels and in order to print on them it requires "exPressit" to be downloaded. It is an abysmal program but it has successfully installed on a few occasions however, on start-up, the PC tries to "complete" the already completed installation and fails when it unsurprisingly cannot find the files it needs. This takes quite a number of clicks of the cancel button and will stop other software from completing its installation. This has been the case for each version of the software but the company appears to have changed hands and I cant find any help from them. As soon as all the paper is gone I shall uninstall it but until then, does anyone have any ideas as to where I can find the offending files and get rid of them?

Answer:Windows Installer tries to complete an installation of a successfully installed program

There are many CD printing programmes available, many come with printers. What printer are you using?

Dear all, I recently installed a brand new Windows 7 Ultimate and a couple of days after that strange things began to happen. Almost each time I try to install some program (for example Photoshop CS5, Guitar Pro 6 and some others), a window pops up and says "Windows Security. Some files have been deleted." At this point the installation stops. The same happens to some downloads.

Besides, I've downloaded the Spybot. It tells me Windows Security Center is off. When I try to turn it on, it says WSC can't be started. The same happens to my administrator security settings. They are off and I can't turn them on.
The computer's behavior looks like there's some virus in it. Please help.

Hi Seven Forums,

First post here, and I think it's a fairly complicated one. Thank you wonderful people in advance for your kind consideration.

When I try to run certain system programs such as SDCLT.EXE, my little Take Ownership shortcut program pops up saying SUCCESS: the file (or folder) is now owned by the Administrator group.

Backstory: I've had terrible permissions issues with this Win 7 install from the get-go and they persist no matter what I do. Recently I was trying to run an installer program for a game I used to play and the installer couldn't get the permissions it needed. I'm running as admin and every option I have to take ownership has been taken (I'm fairly positive). I tried to take even more ownership of C: and everything else, and since that time there are a few system programs which no longer run when their buttons are clicked. Instead, the Take Ownership program which many people have installed for their context menu runs, followed by nothing happening.

Main goal: my backup of D:, imaged by system restore on E:, no longer functions because Win7 says the disk is too full. But when I try to run SDCLT to clean it up or explore my options, the above occurs.

I'm considering resetting all the permissions using the instructions here, but I'm too unclear about what I'm doing to go any further (and potentially do more harm).

Sorry this is so long-winded and perhaps there should be more than one thread, but I don't know how to categorize all the ... Read more

Hi,

My system runs Windows 7 Home premium service pack 1. I have a program which I use every day and it has been working fine. Now when i run it, it opens ok for me to add my login and password then collapses into the task bar. I can't maximise and the only options it gives me is to close program, pin to task bar or the program name but does nothing.
Ive tried to select run maximised in program shortcut properties but no change.
The program I am running is not web based its installed locally but requires that login and password. All other programs are fine.

Really appreciate any help.

I am trying to make something for my usb flash drive that will automatically run when plugged into a computer. All I want it to do is run, check the ip address, then store the result in a notepad file on my flash drive.

Answer:Making a small program for usb that auto-runs?

Small program is all very well but it will still need a bit of clarification regarding what you want. Believe me, once you really know what you want programming isn't that hard, but programming when you just have a vague idea of "you'll know it when you see it" is impossible.

1) is this the Local network IP (which begins 192.168) or the actual IP that your computer is seen as online?
2) What information does it need to store? For example will it just be the IP, or will it need some way to identify the computer as well?
3) If there are multiple network adapters (for wireless, wired, etc) does it need to focus on one network adapter all the time or record the IP for all of them.
4) Will it need to keep the IPs of previous scans, or can it overwrite the file?

As one possible approach, if you go to the command prompt and type "ipconfig" (without the quotes) does that approach what you're after? It can be directed to a file rather than the screen.

As to getting it to start when plugged in, you might be able to do that using a file called autorun.inf stored on the flash disk. However because that has been abused by virus writers to help their viruses infect flash disks and then computers silently it has become increasingly restricted in later versions of Windows. If your version of windows doesn't allow you to use autorun.inf there is probably no way to get it to autostart, or at least any ways would be dangerous.

We have a program that is part of our payroll system that resides on our server and is run via a shortcut on the user's station. Our problem is one station experiences rediculously long load times. The normal load should be about 1 minute. This station takes 4 minutes and 45 seconds. The network connection is good, the memory is more than enough (1 gig), and the cpu isn't breaking a sweat. I haven't a clue what is up with this one pc. I have noted that it transfers the data much slower than the other machine but I can't pin point why. The server runs to a gigabit switch and this machine is connected to that same switch. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,
Windows Vista Business. Canon 40 D camera via USB.

Canon 40D camera, when it appears to system, the autoplay dialog shows.
I want to add a program to that dialog, and then make it always play.

So instead of only having photoshop, or word, or view folder I want Program XYZ.exe to be a choice, and then i will select it, and always do that action. Tweak UI does for XP (so I read) but for vista, cannot find much.

Can find the options in the registry, but it is not straightforward what to do there. Any help is appreciated.

Hi
Using evaluation copy of NetTerm 5.4.2.1 (as terminal emulator) which is meant to run ok under Win7 (earlier versions not). We only have two Win7 Pro machines (rest XP). One machine OK.
On the other, NetTerm runs ok in the account Install (administrator) but not in account User (administrator).

In account User it immediately minimizes to taskbar and won't run. I've tried changing properties from running in 'normal window' to 'run maximized'. The program will then display full screen but still won't connect to LAN.
In account Install it runs as expected and gives a login prompt immediately.
The other Win7 machine happily runs the program using same installation process.

Our first priority is to find out why that's happening (Install is only meant for distributing software from server) but we also have an issue with the 'working' version. The program if left for a few minutes with no activity or if re-entered after a 'switch user' immediately crashes out (leaving us with software locks and various other nasties).

NetTerm's response was that 'it has not been installed correctly'. We've uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times without success.

Thanks in anticipation

Answer:Program runs in one user account, not the other (both admin)

Was it installed for ALL users, as some programs ask up front if it is to be used by all users?
