Windows Explorer crashing whenever i open folders (of any kind)

Question: Windows Explorer crashing whenever i open folders (of any kind)

I have an annoying problem that I can't seem to fix, or that doesn't seem to go away. My windows explorer keeps crashing constantly upon the opening of ANY folder. Be it "my computer" "documents" or simply the folder I've named "junk" on my desktop.

I've tried turning of all applications (msconfig->services) using selective boot-up.
I've ran sfc /scannow and it tells me I've got file corruption, but that it is unable to fix.
I've run windows in safe mode, but the same problem persists even there.
I've also tried a system restore - which I was told would be ineffective, something I found to be true.

I was told to copy some files in the c:/ folder, but since windows explorer crashes before I can get there, such suggestions are moot.

I cannot run scandisk, because I cannot reach that part of the computer. All other applications run perfectly.

I'm running an Asus G74SX:
Intel Core i7 2670QM / 2.2 GHz
500 GB Hybrid Drive / 7200 opm
Serial ATA-300
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M - 3 GB GDDR5 SDRAM

I'm at a loss as to what to do - and my options seem limited.

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer crashing whenever i open folders (of any kind)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello MazrimusTM and welcome to SevenForums,

Sometimes running sfc /scannow up to 3 times one after the other is able to fix corruptions. If you have already tried that, then you might consider doing a Repair Install. This tutorial will explain what you need to do:

Repair Install

Hi.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this since it's not entirely BSOD related, so I haven't followed the usual pre-thread-creation requirements.

A few days ago I had a sudden BSOD and trouble booting my computer back up again. I ran some sort of bootup repair and it worked, but my computer has been running abnormally slow since. I managed to fix my internet browsing speed which seemed to be due to a virus, but whenever I try and access certain folders in windows explorer now, explorer will simply crash.

I have tried running in safe mode and disabling thumbnails and the like and none of it seems to work. I looked through this thread:
Clicking on specific folders causes explorer to crash
and none of the context menu handlers would fix the problem, and "DivX" was nowhere to be found.

A wide variety of folders seem to be affected. Some have videos, mostly .avi's, and some have nothing but pictures, mostly .jpegs. I'm pretty stumped as the many solutions online seem to be of no help.

Thanks!

Answer:Certain folders crashing Windows Explorer

Which video codec you do use?

You use the latest version of Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs - Windows 8 codecs only. If there is any other video codecs installed, uninstall them.

Also, run Disk Cleanup - Open and Use. Make it sure that the "Thumbnails" option is checked when you are on step 4.

Brand new Win XP PC. When jumping between folders on the hard drive I'm getting the message: "Windows has encountered a problem", and the system freezes. I then have to do ctrl-alt-del to stop the folder trying to open itself. Seems to be happening about 30% of the time.I've been using Win 98 till now, and nothing this stupid ever happened...

Answer:Windows explorer crashing between folders

Start, Run, typesfc /scannowand click OK.

Been using windows 8 for a few weeks back........no complaints so far except...
When I open a folder with a large amount of files, especially photos with thumbnails, explorer will crash.

It quickly restarts but it closes any windows I had open and cancels all my file transfers which is really annoying.

I saw a couple of people reporting this in the MS forums but no real solutions...
Anybody else experiencing this?
Running win 8 64 enterprise.

Cheers

I'm in desperate need of help! Windows explorer crashes with the error message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" whenever I click on a folder that has a RAW image file (.CR2) or a TIFF/PSD image file. It then shuts down and restarts. It only happens with these large image files, not video, audio, or pdf files.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. My computer did two lengthy Windows updates over the last week when I did system restarts, so maybe that has something to do with it?

I spent the whole day yesterday trying different suggestions I found on the web and nothing has worked. Here's some of the things that I've tried that have been unsuccessful:

- Selected "Always show icons, never thumbnails" in "Folder options / View".
- Scanned my computer with Malwarebytes. Same problem after the scan/cleanup.
- Tried do a System Restore on 6 different restore points and none of them could complete the Restore successfully.
- Tried to do a System Restore on the same restore points in safe mode and it still couldn't do it.
- Ran SFC/ scan, still does the same thing afterwards.
- Updated my video card driver.
- Tried different image codec packs.
- Uninstalled all image codec packs.
- Some selective startup or clean boot stuff through "msconfig" that didn't help.
- Plus a few other things that I can't even remember (it was a late night!)

I'd be so grateful if anybody can help me figure out this issue. I need to use... Read more

Answer:Windows Explorer constantly crashing (folders with images in them)

This sounds like a codec pack issue. When explorer tries to thumbnail them it crashes because the codec pack has corrupted the thumbnailing process. Some codec packs can hang around and cause issues even after you think you've uninstalled them. Which codec packs did/do you have installed?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to fix my housemate's HP Pavilion dv3 laptop.
As the title says, explorer starts crashing as soon as I log on. Doesn't even manage to load the desktop icons.
I can't open anything, so can't uninstall programs, can't run any malware or antivirus programs. Neither the wireless nor the on-board network cards work so can't run anything online or from external devices. The USBs don't work either.
And to make matters worse, everything is in Spanish. Can't even access the language settings to turn it into English.

I've been trying to find a fix for hours now. Here's what I've already tried:

- Ran Safe Mode and all its variations, incl Clean boot - NO LUCK, explorer keeps crashing.
- Ran sfc /scannow but it did not find anything.
- Tried uninstalling programs via WMIC, but NO LUCK ? it returns code 1006
- Opened Event Viewer and under Errors there is the following:
- Under Event ID 1000:
Path for access to error application: C:\Windows\explorer.exe
Path for access to error module: C:\Windows\system32\thumbcache.dll
- Under Even ID 1005: (will try to translate it now)
Windows could not access the archive C:\Users?..\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_idx.db, because of one of the following reasons , problem with the network connection, the drive that the archive is on or the drive controllers?..

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks a lot.

Turned on my computer today and tried to go into a random folder. When I do so I get the error message "the file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel". I have tried looking in the default program list but there is no option to select explorer which I suspect the problem is due to. If I right click and hit open on the folder, it will open and then any files within that folder such as .jpeg or .mp3 etc will open by double clicking.I remember having this problem years ago with Windows 98 or something but it fixed itself are a restart. I cant seem to fix this. Any ideas ? I am using Windows 7 Ultimate

Answer:Windows 7 wont open any Folders in Explorer

System restore to an earlier date would be easiest but you may have to go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_ass... (I have used some of these files before with no problems) and find the right file for you i think its going to be the folder association fix. Good Luck.

After using Windows Explorer for a short while doing file operations, I find that it starts to take a very long time to open folders. It can take over 30 seconds and sometimes up to a minute. I notice the same problem when using My Computer to look at files.Closing and restarting Windows Explorer does not help. Only rebooting the computer helps for a short while and then the problem comes back.I use Windows 98SE.Thanks,Tim Edwards

I have Windows Vista Ultimate SP1. Under Organize->Folder and Search Options->Browse folders I have the radio button, "Open each folder in the same window" checked. However, Vista refuses to do so and opens each folder in its own window. This does not work well for me because I end up with tons of open windows and its a pain to close them. This behaviour just started. Yesterday it did not do this. This is a fresh install with only Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2005, Expression Studio 2, Adobe CS3 and InstallAware installed. Also worth noting is that if I right click on a folder, the default action of Open is in bold. If I click it then it will open the folder in the same window. However, every time I double click it opens a new window. Please help as I really don't want to have to switch to a third party file management tool over this. Thanks!

I know that the solution to this was in a recent edition of PC Advisor, but after applying it I tore the page out, gave it away and now it's gone!On my desktop I have a shortcut to a folder on my network. When I double-click on the shortcut I would like the folder to open in windows explorer, but with the folders pane already pre-selected on the left, rather than having to select it from the button at the top of the window. Can anyone remember how to do this, or can some kind soul look it up from the recent PC Advisor in which the solution appeared? Many thanks,Stuart Reid

Answer:Explorer windows to open showing folders pane

I don't know if it is the same with a network shortcut, but with Windows Explorer itself, this is achieved by adding /e to the shortcut path to give:%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /eIt then opens with "C" drive expanded in the left pane, instead of the blue "System Tasks".

Like my title read, I can't open any folders in my Windows Explorer with a double click. It gives me the error message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." This also happens whenever I try to open any drives, such as C: drive. I can however run programs from Windows Explorer, and can right click, then choose open to open folders.

I have already done extensive searching on the subject, tried deleting autorun.ini files, tried some registry fixes, with no luck. I'm obviously running Windows 7, 32-bit, on a HP desktop.

Answer:Can't open any folders in Windows Explorer with double click

This may not be the best solution, as I am sure others may have a better solution, but it might work.

Go to start

type cmd into the search bar

right click cmd.exe and choose run as administrator.

Type the following. SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.

See if it finds any errors.

Bruce.

Hello all.
I have been having an issue for the past couple of days. I cannot open my downloads folder. Since I'm using Chrome, this is a bit of a problem. Every time I open it, Windows Explorer restarts. It does not reopen the folder, however. I have run virus scans on the folder and my computer and found nothing. I have a x64 bit Windows 7 computer. It is a Compaq with 4 gigs of RAM.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer:Windows Explorer crashing every time I open download folder

Just for an experiment, can you copy this downloaded folder to another folder, say a Temp folder or one that you created for yourself, if yes, then try opening your downloaded folder from there.
This is just a test to see if your "Downloaded folder" might have some special Administrative rights or not.

Good luck

Ever since I unzipped a zip file from the temp folder, explorer seems to crash every time I click on a certain shortcut within that folder.

This seems to only happen in two locations, and it only began after I unzipped this folder. It has happened on two other occasions, but I can't quite remember how the problem was fixed--if it was fixed at all.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, what would be my best solution to fix it.

Right now I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP2 with the Neowin UXTheme.dll hack for visual styles. Not sure if that's important or not, but I thought I'd post that info up.

Many thanks in advance

Answer:Explorer.exe is crashing when opening certain folders.

Welcome to TSG....

The file could be corrupt delete it and the rar file and re-download it.

The file also could be infected and since opened could have infected your computer please to downlaod and run the following:

To download HJTsetup.exe To Download HijackThis go to the following: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5
Filename = 1137518044HJTsetup.exe
Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

A security expert should take a look at your log - please be patient.

I'm at my wits end.

I have a couple of folders on 2 different drives that have .mp4 video files in them.
Whenever I attempt to open the folders, Explorer.exe (or the replacement I tried) crashes.

Here's my specs and what I've tried so far:

Windows 7, 64bit, all current updates for Windows and drivers, etc.
12 Gigs RAM, Nvidia GTX 970.

I can delete the files in a DOS window.
I already instructed Explorer to NOT show Thumbnails.
I have scaned with Malwarebytes, etc and am not infected.
A run of System File Checker reported several issues that it could not fix.
None of them involved Explorer.exe, but some were interesting:

The list is not all that long, so you'll find it directly below:

Example I am looking at a full window of folders with five coloumns of folders. If I double click on a folder in any coloumn except the far left coloumn, all of the coloumns move to the left by one coloumn space. Reseting file and view settings does not
fix the problem. I have seen this on Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Enterprise. It does not matter if it is on a domain or not or if a group policy is setting the home page.
This means I have to click twice as many times to open a folder in list view and that is the view I really want to use. Clicking twice as many times is also not good for carpel tunnel. This happens on my home and work computers and I have seen it on other
Windows 7 computers. Neither does the reg hack for MIUs or something similiar to that.

Answer:Windows 7 Explorer in list view moves coloumns of folders to left when you double click folder to open it

Hi,

That’s a by design feature, but you can apply view settings to all folders of the same type. Here are
the detailed steps:

1. Open a folder and make changes as you like.
2. Press Alt to display the menu bar. Click Tools -> Folder options.
3. Click View tab.
4. Press the "Apply to folders" button.
5. Click Apply and click OK.

Note: The "Apply to folders" settings apply the current view setting to all folders that are optimized for the
same content as the folder you have open. This setting will not apply to the folders which is not the same type.

Hope that helps.

Hi I'm new to tech support forums so please be patient if I have missed anything, I'll try to follow the rules as best I can...

I have recently come up with a problem that whenever I close ANY folder (windows explorer) explorer.exe will crash and restart itself. I have done some troubleshooting to help identify the cause of the error but haven't been able to come up with anything. I haven't been able to link any system changes (hardware, software installations) to the time the problem started.

I am running Win XP Pro SP3 with IE 7

First off. Apologies if this is in the wrong forum

So I have had Windows 10 for a couple of months now, and have never had any issues up until now.
Whenever I try to rename a folder/ add new folder file explorer freezes as soon as i touch the keyboard.
I've scoured the internet for solutions but have had no success it's getting extremely frustrating as I can't keep having
New Folder...New Folder 1...New Folder 2 etc. forever haha.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

PS. I've been looking into my keyboard and if the drivers are all working correctly. I have a Razer DeathStalker Ultimate. all drivers are up to date with Razer Synapse.

Answer:File Explorer crashing when trying to rename folders

File Explorer is a Windows core file and does lots of background processing. If it hangs/crashes/lags etc... and the cause might be some incompatitble Shell Extensions that were installed by third party softwares.

Hi there

Recently I've been experiencing a weird problem with Windows 10. Right clicking any folders on the pane on the left - the one with folders, libraries etc. causes explorer to freeze and then crash.

I can right click on files and folders in the main explorer window. This problem only occurs when I try to right click on something in the navigation pane.

What could cause this?

Answer:Explorer crashing when right clicking folders on Navigation Pane

Any new folders added ? Guess can be a shell extension that gets put into the context menu when you right click.
Some have used this free program to disable non microsoft shell extensions. Have you recently added any new software since this occurred? http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

Ah crap. So I can't open windows explorer; meaning - My Computer, My Documents, any folders, "Search", anything that uses explore .. I can not open! It doesn't pop up with an error message, but it kinda refeshes my whole screen. The taskbar dissapears, then 2 seconds later comes back, you know that process.

I did get a trojan, called "Dialer". Not sure what version. I ran AVG, and it said it healed/got rid of it, whatever. I guess not? I've ran AVG again, twice, and it finds nothing. I've ran S&D, Adaware 6, CWshreder, and stinger - I healed whatever it found, which I don't think had anything to do with the dialer trojan, it was other things - But since then, I've re-ran those programs, and it finds nothing..

In safemode, I CAN access windows explore, and anything. Sad thing is, on this computer, for some odd reason I do not know of, system restore was TURNED OFF.

I'm having a big issue here with my PC, I am currently using Firefox just to get support for this due to the fact that Explorer will not open and this is my only personal computer.

Problem:
Upon logging on, Explorer does not start (so no taskbar, icons, etc.) I know this can be a common problem. So, I open up task manager and run explorer, it opens and then closes less than a second later. It does this continuously and will not remain open at all.

I need help with this, very badly. I do not want to deal with losing my important files if I had to go to the extent of reinstalling XP.
How did this happen, you may ask?
I was simply cleaning out some files and NOT deleting anything of real value for windows (as far as I know, just simple music files and setup programs I no longer need). I then went to open a new folder using the start menu, trying to launch My Documents -- It wouldn't open. I close Explorer and run the task again, then this problem started and has yet to be repaired.

Please help!!

HiWeird thing just happened on my laptop. My hard drive has a c: partition and the d: partition. On c:, there's just my Vista install (family, 32b), while on D:, there's all my files: some videos, my mp3 collection, and my databank of pictures, that i'm using for work.My comp is clean (i've checked with a full array of antivirus, antispyware, firewall, and so on).Up until two days ago, I had no problem using windows explorer to browse through my files. Even when the folder was huge (my picture collection amounts to 30G of data, and about 900 folders), explorer did its job relatively diligently, at least as far as Vista goes.Yet, two days ago, while closing a photo opened in windows Vista's standard picture viewer, explorer crashed, and restarted. The log gave me an error ID 1000, with, in french (cos i'm french)Application d?faillante Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6000.16386, horodatage 0x4549b091, module d?faillant ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, horodatage 0x4549bdc9, code d?exception 0xc0000374, d?calage d?erreur 0x000af1c9, ID du processus 0x690, heure de d?but de l?application 0x01cb10045424c923.And then, some time later, i noticed that explorer started lagging when opening some of my folders. It doesn't lag a lot, just a second or two, and never on my biggest folders : my mp3 folder or my movies folder open just fine, but when I double-click on my image folder, there's at least 50% chance it's gonna lag (without any green bar on top, just the green circle mouse indic... Answer:Why am I getting two of the same folders when I open File Explorer?

If you want to post pics , use the Windows Snipping Tool in Accessories and just paste the pic into the reply window , you don't even need to save it. (Opening stranger's files on One's PC is a security hazard eg from Word Macros)

If you are talking about a USB drive showing twice that is normal Win 10 , but it can be stopped with a Tutorial in the Tutorial Section on how to remove Drives from the Explorer Pane but needs reapplying after Each major Win10 Update , so get the .reg file and just use it each time.

Things have worked well with RocketDock until I installed the latest Windows update two days ago. Clicking on any application in RocketDock it works fine. But when I click on the User, Documents or Pictures folder icons I made paths for in RocketDock, an "Open with" window opens. From here if I browse for the program to open these folders and click on explorer.exe the folder opens. Problem is, the "open with" window is grayed out where you check to make it the default application. So how do I get explorer.exe to open folders located on the RocketDock taskbar? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Explorer.exe won't open folders in Rocketdock

can you "change default program"? Your "open with" can't be greyed out... what antivirus program are you running.. try a virus scan..
the easy solution here is that you can do a system restore to 2 days back.. before the windows update..

Hi There
All on a sudden like, I have been experiencing this issue since the last 3-4 weeks. This has put me off from accessing the Hard Disk to save or check anything at all. I have gone through a few things including running in Safe Mode but nothing has worked.
Even in Safe Mode, it crashed, if that was not expected.
In the meantime, I had also run sfc/ scannow to get a 100% normal health report.
Reading from your responses again, I have also checked the start up programs but wouldn't know who the culprit is, if that is the case. So, please help, if you can. Thanks.

Kind Regards

1. Please update your Internet Explorer iaw the latest Cumulative Security Update, issued two days ago.

2. Right-click My Computer, select Manage, go to the Event Viewer, and post back all Events that you consider relevant to the IE hanging.

3. Perform a cleanup of your system disc, including the Temporary Internet files for deletion.

4. In IE, go to the Tools menu -> Internet Options, and in the General tab, under the Temporary Internet files press the Settings... button and post back what you've got there, as well.

I'm set up to run folder windows in a separate instance of Explorer for better stability. But now I'm having problems. When I close all the windows for the second instance of Explorer, the process frequently does not terminate. So then when I try to open another folder window, nothing happens. I have to quit Explorer manually to get it working again. This has happened several times now, and I'm getting tired of it. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm running XP MCE 2002 Edition, all the latest updates.

Answer:Explorer.exe hangs instead of closing, folders won't open.

Explorer uses up a lot of resources and your method may not be best suited if those, particularly memory, is in limited supply.

You might try doing a "system restore" to a date when there were no problems; these can be undone.

Most problems I've had with explorer disappear on a reboot.

But you can test in Safe Mode and also test using a "clean boot" method of troubleshooting.

CLEAN BOOT TROUBLESHOOTING technique

First, restart in Safe Mode if necessary -- (tap the f8 key promptly on startup and choose the Safe Mode option from the boot menu) or Normal mode

Then:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 << written for Vista, but applies equally well to XP

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note wha... Read more

I recently started to have this problem where when the laptop is woken up after either a sleep/hibernation, I can't open any folders. I can't open the computer icon, any folders on my desktop and the Windows File Explorer. I can, however, open the files (Excel, IE, Firefox) on the desktop even when this problem comes up. It doesn't happen every time the laptop is woken up from either state but happens at least every other day. In order resolve the issue, I have to restart the computer or log out and re-login. I thought I had some corrupt files so I re-imaged the HD to its original state, but the problem came back. Any thoughts or suggestions??? I have X230 with Windows 7 64bit Thanks.

When I open My Computer, Control Panel or any other folder that requires explorer.exe to run, the system crashes, the desktop disappears and then reappears. I can then click on My Computer etc. with success but can only do this once. Basically every other time that I try to access explorer.exe the system crashes. The crash notes the error with atl.dll when opening explorer.exe. Atl.dll is not read only, and I've tried re-installing the file with no success. I've also tried moving all .cpl files out of the system32 folder but it still crashes when opening Control Panel.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Can't Open My Computer, Control Panel Or Use Explorer.exe Without Crashing

From another post that I made:Next, please go to Start...Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Event Viewer. Once Event Viewer opens there will be 3 categories listed in the left hand pane (Application, Security, and System). Please click on each one (in turn) and view the messages for that category in the right hand pane. Look for any error messages around the time of the last problem. Then right click on the error and select "Properties". In the window that opens will be a text description of the error - please copy it down and forward it to me. The error text should generally be in the format of 0x0000007a - with the last 2 letters'numbers changing depending upon the error. Also, usually another 4 sets of these numbers follows the error message - they are important also. Finally, at times there is a file name mentioned with the error message - please let me know what it is.If there are too many errors to choose from, please let me know and we can proceed a bit differently. Also, generally speaking, the usual location for this type of error will be in the System category - but there is a possibility that it may be in the other areas. Please do not erase your log files until we're finished troubleshooting this issue.

starting here - please redirect if I need to post elsewhere.

my windows explorer file is in continuous failure. not sure if a corrupted registry or not

there is no blue screen of death, no error message just a failure to open items in the startup menu and occasionally a menu item will be dropped from the menu.

i'll get a blank window and the infamous circle icon attempting to open something like on a very slow computer

all browsers and programs run fine that are already opened

so my temporary work around is to use task manager to end the explorer.exe process

this wipes out all desktop icons and the start menu

again all other open programs continue to function normally

then while in task manager, I'll click on "new task" in the applications tab and restart explorer.exe

then everything functions well - I can open and access folders and programs - for a while

I can also accomplish by restarting my computer but using task manager is faster.

I've not timed how long before explorer fails again or what triggers it.

I've searched the internet and haven't found anything close to this issue.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Hi, I have windows Vista Home premium 32 bit OS installed on my computer. For the past week or so, my computer has been acting really weird and running extremely slow. Firefox won't load some pages. Most sites that equire secure sign-ins take ages. Like ebay, and online bankings, HSBC etc. and then for some reason my browser goes offline out of the blue, tells me that I can't browse because the browser is working offline (happens a lot more on IE than Fiefox though, but it does happen on both).

Also sometimes firefox shuts down on its own, without any warning or an error message, when I download something, clicking on the recently downloaded programme doesn't open it, when I right click and then open the folder containing the downloaded item, even the folder doesn't open and when I try to manually open the "download" folder or sometimes even when I try to open control panel, I get a message windows explorer has stopped working and is restarting, sometimes not even the message and windows explorer just crashes on it's own without any error.

I've tried using google chome, but sometimes it just won't load pages. Help! I'm stuck.
I have a folder from which I need to delete a number of files but for each attempt to delete a file the error message comes up "Can't read from source disc or file". And yet the file can be opened in an application and the contents appear undamaged.
Thye same goes fort attemting to delete a folder, - the same error message appears. - "Can't read from source disc or file".
If I attempt to create a new folder so that I can download some images fromm my camera I get the error message "Unable to create the folder "New Folder"., - File system error (65535)".
Basically, the files / folders all seem to be OK and can be read by applications (Photoshop etc.) but I can't delete old ones or create noew folders. Any clues? Has some sort of overall disc protection been applied?

Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

Hello everyone, im fairly new to this, so please bear with me.

Recently, ive been having trouble with my computer. It started one morning when i went to go check my email. My main browser is google chrome exe so naturally i go to click it. Which is when all this starts -_-. i double click on it, but the program doesnt open. I try to open it by left clicking and running as an admin but still no luck. I soon realize that this is the case for ALL of my programs except Internet explorer, which i find strange considering the similarities with the other browsers. Anyway, ive read previous similar problems on here, and i download Hijackthis. I have a log folder that i can post if needed. Also i see something when i try to open the program quicky enough but i cant make out what it is before it closes. There is also a suspicious search engine called searchqu.com406 that comes up as soon as i start internet explorer Keep in mind this doesnt happen in safe mode, and evrything works fine, just like the computer was regularly before. Ive tried multiple Malwarebytes scans, stinger, (which is still scanning after 25 mins) and AVG (which begins to scan, but then a command prompt comes up and stops it) all to no avail. Any help would greatly be appreciated Please and Thank You

Is anyone familiar with a virus I just got that basically pops up tons of extra ad windows - seemingly redirecting me to anything other than what I type in. - reditty.com is displayed on the top edge of each window (?) Eventually, it puts up so many windows and locks me from searching at all anymore. I heard it can only be removed by manually following certain specific steps. I would totally appreciate any info on this. Thanks!

Answer:Some kind of Explorer Virus (Windows XP)

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Im running windows 7 ultimate 64 ... I dont know totally system specs. It's a custom rig that I purchased about 6 months ago. I dont think the specs matter anyway because I don't believe this is a hadware problem, but a windows problem.

Ok,

So about a month ago I was unlucky enough to pick up a virus infection somewhere ... you know, those fake anti virus ones that totally destroy your system and leave you helpless. It started this whole chain of events that lasted two weeks and ended up with me running in safe mode for more than a week trying to fix the problem. I tried restoring my computer via system restore a few times and got an error every time - (which in turn 'damaged' my restore points so I no longer can use this option)

So, I figured I would reinstall windows and fix it. Sadly, whatever was on my comp as turned my CD drives (DVD and bruner) into dead weight - they won't read a thing. So I got Dlite and mounted the CD to a virtual drive and tried to install it that way, but for whatever reason it gives me an error and reboot and wont finish the install. It does however take me too the new log in screen, which gives me an error when I try to create a new log in for the new windows. I was able to get back into the old windows install and managed to delete the new one. Anyway .. I eventually was able to get spyware docter and a few other programs to run in safe mode and I cleaned the comp of all virus's BUT when I tried to run windows normally it would barely run at ... Hello everyone. Sorry for the disparaging title but I cannot figure out how this works, so I can here :-).

I have a folder that has subfolders, each titled from a movie. Within the subfolder is a file for that movie ( .avi, .mkv, .mp4, etc.) and other files (.nfo, .svt, .jpg, etc.). When I select the top movie folder and do a search for a work in the movie title ("star trek") I get all the things that have star trek (the subfolder, the files within the folder and the movie file too). I though well I really only want to select the movie file and there is this thing called "kind" where I can "limit" my search. Cool! So I type in
star trek and select kind:=movie....Nothing.
star trek kind:=video....Nothing.
kind:=movie star trek...Nothing.
kind:=video star trek....Finally a hit!

So is this really how this search box is suppose to behave. I have to type in the kind first then my search term? do I need to do this with all the windows limiters (size? Other properties?)

Also what type of files are windows looking for when I put in "Movie" or "Video"? Could there be a type that is missing say I have some old .ogg container files will windows find this under "Video"?

Thanks
-S

Answer:Searching with windows explorer Kind:=SUCKS!

I agree I hate the Windows 8 Search box - Actually I finally managed to rig it to find any item on my system by name or partial name. I think what I had to do was add the whole drive into the search index, and I did that for all of the drives installed. Sometimes when I am searching a folder it will tell me I need to add it to the indexer, I have kept doing this until practically the whole system has been indexed. I think this slows down the system, but at least I can find stuff now.

On thing I have noticed, you cannot search "Computer" you HAVE to choose a drive - Searching "Computer" yields no results. No, I take that back - I just did a search for "Star Trek" and it's showing me stuff from all of the hard drives:

So I think if you add all of the drives into the Indexer, eventually you can search them all, you can do this by doing a search on each drive and when it asks you if you wanna add any locations to the index, always say Yes.
Also, set up your search parameters so that it's exactly like how I have them set in my Search bar in the image.

This started happening three days ago, and happens about once every day, and now, once every few hours.

After a certain amount of time, many programs will suddenly freeze, crash, fail to show a window, etc. For example, explorer.exe will become nonresponsive, internet explorer will crash, and when restarted, will lock up and become nonresponsive, windows media player will not produce a window (although wmplayer.exe is launched), and system restore will not display a window (although rstrui.exe is launched). Before the first occurrence, the programs work fine; however, after they experience that problem once, they continue to experience the problem. Also, they seem to be somehow linked; for example, if internet explorer crashes and fails to display windows properly/becomes nonresponsive, trying to use Windows media player later will not work either. I should also note that nothing is hogging the CPU during this time. However, some programs are completely unaffected. For example, Firefox 3.5.5 works completely fine, Office 2007 works fine, Process explorer works fine, along with most of my non-Windows programs. What I’m starting to guess is that there is some problem with my graphics related to parts of the operating system and programs close to it, but I’m not sure.

Most of the time, simply restarting the computer doesn’t solve the problem. I system restore to provide a temporary fix by going into Safe Mode and starting system restore from there... Read more

Answer:Windows crashing when opening folders

I noticed that you have uTorrent running... If you use uTorrent to view your files, then this is the problem...It has to do with the way uTorrent calls Explorer. It shouldn't be a problem though. Open task manager and uTorrent. Click open containing folder, then close the folder again. Watch task manager for a minute and you should see the new Explorer process disappearing too.

So I have had this computer now for over a year and the problem I'm about to describe has been existant all the time. Though it's gone multiple weeks without happening and then doing it multiple times a day.

So when I'm for example playing CS.GO everything is acting as it should, no frame drops or whatever and then suddenly my keybord and mouse does not respond and my sound is like a robot screaming. (Don't know how else to put it lol.) I can still see the game going on but I can't do anything and everything moving on the screen is in slow motion. I have to do a reboot to make it work as usual and then just hope that it wont crash again when I play.

My specs are

AMD FX-8350
ASUS GTX 760
CORSAIR 600W
8GB RAM i dont really know what kind

tell me if you need info about the motherboard and other stuff cuz i can check

pls help

and no its not overheating i've checked that multiple times

i've also checked event viewer.

The PC is built by myself, I'm sry for any bad spelling, from Sweden.

Hi all,

I am using Window7 64 bit version. I have a problem when I was trying to open a folder. When I open this particular folder windows explorer is crashing and saying cannot access memory (with different addresses). All other folders are opening properly. Also, there are few vedio files in the directory, which can opened by right clicking on the folder using VLC media player.

I ran malwarebytes anti-malware and avast anti virus on the directory. Both showed no errors.

Please help me on this.

Hello markandeyulub, welcome to SF!

I'm not sure if I understand completely. If you open a specific folder, it crashes. Explorer but not your whole PC, right?
If so how do you get to a few video files in that specific folder? Do you mean it crashes sometimes but not allways?
have you tried a checkdisk of that HDD? Disk Check

Hi guys,

I'm greatful to anyone who can help with this. My DH ran a version of Kapersky from unknown origins a while back..we got the blue screen of death, I managed to restore to the last version, but since then, explorer.exe and adobe ARM crash as soon as windows opens. We've tried restoring to an earlier date, we've ran MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware, Spyware Doctor, CCleaner at the suggestion of other sites when I googled the error signature (AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 02dffb5a)

SAS found this:
Trojan.Agent/Gen-PEC
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\STACY SAMSON\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP\RARSFX0\PROCS\EXPLORER.EXE

But quarantining hasn't resolved the issue. MBAM, SD, and CCleaner all came back clean. Everything I've read indicates that reimaging is the next step but I don't have my original install disk, and things are so tight financially, I don't have the cash to order a new disk. Answer:Windows explorer (explorer.exe) crashing - no disk

Hello, my name is Elise and I'll assist you with this issue.First of all I recommend you to uninstall ThreatFire and PCTools spyware doctor. Both are legit programs but it is not uncommon for them to cause problems. I recommend installing a free antivirus like Avast, Avira or Microsoft Security Essentials instead.COMBOFIX---------------Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:BleepingcomputerForoSpywareDisable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)Double click on Combofix.exe and follow the prompts. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you a... my folders won't open, a library icon shows on the task bar and shows the open folder but the folder itself won't open. same for my computer. What caused this and how can it be fixed, other that through restore? i've run malwarebytes, virus scan, spybot and nothing works. even reinstalled windows. The folders will open in safe mode tho

Answer:windows folders won't open

System restore should have fixed that but if you reinstalled Windows 7, then that definitely should have fixed the problem. Try opening your mouse control panel and slowing down the double click and see if that helps or right click and choose 'open' from the menu and that should work for you. You may have a bad mouse, borrow another one to test. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

When I select and click on a desktop folder, including Recovery Bin, the result is only a new listed operating program in the Task bar.
I suspect something has happened to Windows Explorer, but I can't figure out what.
I've run Malwarebytes, removed recently installed programs, ran file check, and attempted to roll back with System Restore.
Nothing revealed as a problem, except Sys Restore won't go back to any of the available points.
Any tips would be much appreciated.
p.s
Normal folders action in Safe boot mode.
Thanks

Answer:Folders Won't Open in Windows 7

I see that you have already done a few things like Running antivirus, System Restore and Running System File Checker.
Try File Association Fixer to fix the folder file association and see if it helps you.
If it doesn't help you, maybe its some explorer.exe addon which is creating some issues. You may want to check them out!

I went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and changed the icon, clicked ok, blah blah. However, now whenever I open a folder, it instead opens the default "Search" thing.

So I went into Folder Options > File Types > Found the folder one, went on its properties and added a new thing called "open", to open with "explorer.exe".

Now the folder opens, however when I double click a folder within that, rather than it opening in the same window, it opens in a new window!!

And no, this is not the setting in Folder Options that selects between the two. It is alerady set to open in same window. I've gone through all the other settings in Folder Options and I think rather than it being a setting, something has cocked up! I really need this working asap...I don't even want to go to bed before it's fixed.....Please help me fix it!

Note: I tried system restore, that didn't work ether.

Hi,
I need help with, "open each folder in its own window" does not work. (Windows 7)
I've tryed restore defaults in folder options, no help!
If I right click open/folder from Explorer, this is the olny way it works.

This happens in all user accounts.

I've been searching for help on the web all night, nothing solid!

Any help much appreciated.

I have a Dell desktop running Windows XP. In the past 3 weeks, everytime I try and open any windows folder the desktop refreshes itself and closes the folder (i.e....My computer, My Documents, any program folders through the start menu...)

Not sure if this is a windows issue or a virus. I ran Trend Titanium without finding any viruses and Malware with the same results.

I can access the internet no problem with IE. I have tried Check Disk and no issues. I tried to run on safe mode and it reboots when I select Safe Mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

a couple of days ago i fixed something that's been bugging me for a while now, all my folders were type: acpconvert, managed to sort it by deleting the relevant entry in the registry, no problems there now.
however as i was trying to fix it through 'tools > folder options > filetypes', under the 'folder' type, i accidentally clicked set default, and as a result, now that my folders are folders again, every sub folder i open does so in its own window.
i can't edit or remove any actions, (theres 'open', 'explore', and one i set myself as a test which opens 'windows > explorer') and whatever i set as default now does the same thing.
its not 'folder options > general > browse folders', i can't see what the problem is, and i don't have any viruses/spyware.

any help would be great, thanks

So, I can't open my Downloads folder and basically any folder that has data in it. Everything works besides that.

When I try to open a folder it will open, flash for about a second, then it will close.

I run Glaries and it sees:

I click repair and it says it's resolved but when I rerun after reboot it still finds the registry errors and I can't open folders...

Any ideas?

Actually, after installing Daemon Tools my PC has been acting weird, so I will uninstall it and reboot and see if that fixes it.

Wow, Control Panel at Uninstall a Program flashes and closes as well...so now I'm screwed?

Answer:Windows 8 - Folders won't open

Running "Glaries": just may be your problem.

Most of these "Cleaners" and "Sped up" programs do more damage than good.

Your posted image did not come through, so we do not see what the report is.

I'm fairly new to this site, but I'm hoping that someone can help me out with this computer issue:

1) My system32 folder pops up (or used to until the folders stopped showing all together)
2) Everytime I click on My Documents/My Computer or whatever else is related to the windows folders/explorer list, the computer kind of refreshes the screen with less of the icons near the time/clock (some kind of tray or something; system tray? I don't know)
3) IE, Windows Explorer, Folders, Zipped files etc don't open up; only separate programs
4) This Microsoft Internet Explorer warning comes up: something about settings and ActiveX and the page will not be completely accurate
5) I have a "Doctments & Settings" folder taking over the "Documents & Settings" :S

Answer:How can I get my folders to open again in Windows 7?

Hello Tom, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like the folder may be offscreen. If it is, then the tutorial below can help show you how to drag the folder window back to your desktop to see it again.

(Same message, I just forgot my HJT Log from earlier)

I have some serious problems, and it appears that someone else had a similar problem not too long ago. However, one of the suggestions was to use a program only supported by IE, and my IE is now infected with CWS spyware!! I basically can't open any folders (my computer, my documents, search files folders, anything) but anything on the desktop I can still access. When I open IE, I get an immediate error message and it is shut down (not to mention that it immediately resets the homepage to some stupid site every time). Please help. I appreciate your help in advance.

Hi,I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. When i open internet explorer 10 multiple windows open. This happened soon after I downloaded FireFox, uninstalled it and then I tried Google Chrome but uninstalled it too. I tried both because IE10 was giving me issues when I uninstalled iTunes; I went to download it again from IE10 but there was no response, the page just sat there. I tried FireFox and after it downloaded, I didn't see where the iTunes was, got frustrated and then uninstalled FireFox and downloaded Google Chrome. iTunes downloaded fine on it and the following day, when I clicked on IE, multiple pages opened. As that started to occur, MacAfee popped up a message that it prevented a Trojan. I ran full scan but it didn't find anything. I downloaded AVG and it found 12 threats that say, Found MalSign.Generic.E07 all had Severity Medium State Secured. One was found Severity High Virus Found VBS/Downloader.AgentI don't know if what is causing IE to open multiple times is a virus or not, AVG says it caught and secured it. Just curious if anyone is having this issue with IE opening up at multiple times and if this might be a virus that though AVG caught, can still be on the system? Thanks!

Hey guys, thanks for viewing my post... This has been going on for about 2 weeks now and I can't figure out the cause...

Every time I open "My Computer" or anything with windows explorer, everything is fine for a few seconds... then starts to slow... then explorer completely locks up and crashes without an error message... screen shows only the wallpaper for a few minutes... then explorer starts back up, icons come back, etc and all is normal again.

This only seems to happen when utilizing Windows Explorer. I've tried to change the settings on the automatic thumbnail view thinking THAT was the problem, but it always crashes before I can go in there. (Plus I haven't changed settings in that area any time recently, and I do a lot of graphics so a thumbnail preview is a must)

I assume this is just a dumb XP problem, but searching for it with terms like "windows explorer crashes" etc comes up with only Internet Explorer results... I have 1.5g of ram and a decent processor in my HP Pavilion a535w... and only since a few weeks ago have I had any problems like this. NEED HELP!

Also, ever since about a month after getting a new graphics card... sometimes it takes 1-5 tries to get my computer to boot if just recently shut off or restarted. The computer appears to come on, but it doesn't make any loading clicks, and the monitor won't turn on.

I don't think they're related, but both are equally annoying.

Here is my HJT log bel... Read more

Hey guys, i was just wondering if anyone can help me out with my problem:

My PC keeps feezing/crashing when im in internet explorer. Not all the time, not every website.. most the time seems as if there is a more complicated website that requires a flashplayer, or has more images or something it will just freeze, lots of black squares will appear around the cursor. This is really annoying me now, as im running a fairly new computer , HP TouchSmart 300PC, and all their tech support said to me: every time that happens, unplug your power cable from the PC for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. That way computer doesnt freeze/crash THAT often, i could run it 2-3 days. But then again once it starts, it freezes like 5-7 times a day. I know this shouldnt be happening at all though

I scanned for maliciousware/viruses (Norton 360+ Malware bytes) computer seems to be clean, tried defragmenting it still keeps happening! I could be in winamp all day, it wont freeze/crash. As soon as i go on IE. it starts. Anyway my system specs are:
