Preferred Solution: Windows 7 will download programs but not install programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows 7 will download programs but not install programs

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

How many anti-virus applications are you using?

May I suggest you delete the lot and use Microsoft Security Essentails instead?

You can download it here and it's free: Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Having more than one A/V application running can impact on how your computer performs and it is not good practice to run more than one on your computer.

I recently upgraded to windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.... My dad did the install for me so im not exactly sure on his steps. But here is my problem:

I have a 10gb partition called drive (I), the OS is located here and takes up almost the entire 10gb

My C drive still has 137gb available

Once the system was running and online, i went on to get all the updates and install various program (java, adobe, itunes, etc)

I keep getting the error msg " the machine does not have enough memory to install this program, clear memory space and try again"

I saved the exe files in the C drive and i tried saving to my external as well, the download saves but when i attempt to install i get the same error msg...

Please help, i am not very tech savvy and would appreciate some feedback, i mean whats the point of a pc you cant download or install ANY files on??

Answer:I cant Download or install programs on Windows 7

I am going to take a guess and say that the problem is with your extremely tiny system volume (I). Your dad set you up for an unstable computer buy choosing a system volume that tiny. I'd back up the data, and do a clean istall using the entire disk as C.

Okay guys, this is pretty weird. I forgot that I uninstalled my anti virus 1 week ago and now my computer goes crazy. It won't let me open the Windows update, System Restore and Download/Install .exe and AntiViruses. When I try to download Anti virus' (Avast,Avira, ESET, MSE, Malwarebytes) all fail at 99% of download. I don't even know the reason -- now since I have many games and files in my pc and I don't want to do a reformat or re-install my os. Is there any other way to fix this issue? If you need more information (if I'm missing something) please kindly tell so. Hope my prob will get fixed asap.

I support the computers at my Church. I have a problem with users installing programs that frequently end up causing problems. unfortunately written restrictions have not worked. I need a way to restrict most users from downloading and or installing programs. They should go through the Administrator. unfortunately due to financial consideration I have limitations. Does any one have any idea how to do this within the confines of windows 7 home premium or utilizing a economical utility?

Remember Group Policies are not available.

thanks in advance for any and all help.

Answer:Restrict download/install programs windows 7 home

As the users are able to install software I will assume they are using an admin account. Only an admin account can install software. All admin accounts are equal and trying to impose restrictions on what they can do is an exercise in futility. The only way to prevent users from installing software is to give them standard user accounts.

I hope this is the right forum for this kind of question, first time on one of these sites.

I downloaded Starcraft 2 last night and went to bed, then got up this morning to install it. When I double clicked on the install file, nothing happened. I waited and did it again. I rebooted my computer and tried again, nothing. When opening my task manager, I have an installer.exe running, but it seems to freeze as soon as I start the file and does absolutely nothing.

So I went to Blizzard's tech support and found the corresponding topic, they told me to make sure all my drivers were up to date. I went to Dell's tech support and found the right drivers, then downloaded them. However, I cannot install them because when I start the install, nothing happens. Again, I get an exe file in my task manager but all it does is appear then sit there.

Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior? If so, how can I go about fixing it?

Answer:Cannot download/install drivers/programs, Windows XP, Inspiron 530s

If you haven't already do a complete uninstall of Starcraft 2. Can you now do your Dell updates?

Also, when you tried installing the first time did you disable your firewall/antivirus? I found if I don't disable my Online Armor (great firewall by the way) I'll have loading/installing issues. Once I install a game and then renable my firewall then things are fine.

After viewing some great tech support on your forum today that looked like a similar problems I am having, I decided to join the site in hopes of getting the same help.

I went ahead and made a log1, log and info files via that .bat file mentioned in someone elses topic but I also read that I'm not suppose to post any of that until asked. Sooo... I'll wait. :0)

Problems? Well, Avast seems to have more more traces off the viruses I mentioned in the description however I am still unable to update any malware/spyware protection software in order to run it on this laptop; moreover I am unable to get to the windows update page to try to update the computer... the owner of this laptop said they received an update from windows about a month ago.

When I click on the windows update from my programs files, I get directed to google search instead. :0( Before running the avast(avg was installed before but stopped responding) I would get directed to a depression website when trying to type in

Pleaaaaaaaaaaassseee send help.

I'm on windows xp 2002 home edition service pack 3. Thank you

Answer:Windows updates shows google search instead, can't update any spyware, malware software, can't download/install programs...

As no logs have been posted, I am shifting this topic from the specialized HiJack This forum to the Am I Infected forum.==>PLEASE DO NOT NOW POST LOGS<== unless a log is specifically requested.

Vaio E Series Latop, running Windows 8
Not mine but trying to fix it for a friend.......
Attempted to download and install MalwareBytes & AVG Free, no luck.  Entered safe mode, was able to download both, installed same.
Ran MalwareBytes, removed 425 issues.  Ran again, clean.
Installed AVG Free, removed 15 issues, ran again, clean.
I have attempted to download a few other programs with no luck.  The box that appears above the task bar has the following options:  Open, Save (with dropdown) and cancel.  Open does nothing, Save, save as and save & open do nothing.  Cancel does nothing.
Thought maybe the problem was with startup programs, so I tried this:
Click Start and type msconfig in the Search box.

One the ‘General’ tab, click ‘Selective startup’, then click to clear the ‘Load startup items’ checkbox.

Click ‘Services’ tab, click ‘Hide all Microsoft services’, and then click ‘Disable all’.

Click OK, then click Restart.

After the computer restarts, try to run your program installation.

No luck, same as before, no option to run the install.....
Thanks for your help

I can download programs such as brighthouse 'Easy Gadget' and 'Adobe Air' and HP Solutions Center' but these programs stop and state"cannot be installed" Notify program company. They cannot tell why the programs won't install. Anybody have ant ideas???

Answer:can download but cannot install most programs

Does your user have administrator privileges ? Users in XP have administrator privileges by default, but if some user with administrator privileges has assigned limited privileges to your user, there are things that you CANNOT do, including installing at least some programs, and running certain Windows programs, such as msconfig.E.g. If you get an error message when you type msconfig in the Run box (and have pressed Enter), that's probably your situation. If your user DOES have limited privileges, you must have some user that DOES have administrator privileges to temporarily, or permanently, assign administrator privileges to your user so that you can install any program, or run any Windows program. If your user DOES have administrator privileges, if you have recently installed Windows from scratch, if not all of your Windows updates have been loaded yet, most programs use a Windows Installer software package and most of those require that the Windows Installer version 3.1 has been installed, which is an update - they won't install if the Windows Installer is still the version originally included.

I've just fully formatted my pc it's ntfs, xp pro sp3, i installed the drivers using my driver cd (AND68-17b), so i then downloaded google chrome, firefox, then i tried to run them and nothing happens?? anyone have any idea why this is?

Interestingly enough i then i tried transferring the download files on my external 1TB HD and it could run them from there and install them on my pc.

Why ain't the internal hd running any downloaded programs??

It also seems like "Add or Remove progams" app ain't working, their maybe more programs not working but most seem to be running at the moment

I did previously have an issue with "lsass.exe - system error. An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function." i then deleted that partion and install a fresh copy on the drive, although i don't get this message no more.

Really confused here, this is never occurred before, if anyone can help it would be highly appreciated.

Answer:I've just formatted my pc i can download programs but can't install them?

Hi Boxing and welcome to TSF.

Sounds a bit strange after a fresh install? I see that you have Service Pack 3 installed; was this via a slipstreamed install or via Windows Update (just want to make sure that everything is fully up to date.

Can you check that 'DCOM Server Process Launcher' is set to 'Automatic' in Services.

Windows Key+R and type 'services.msc' and hit OK. (without quotes) Scroll down to DCOM Server Process Launcher, double click on it to access the properties box and make sure it is set to 'Automatic'. You might also want to Stop the service and then Start it again.

It also seems like "Add or Remove progams" app ain't working

Do you mean that some programs aren't being uninstalled, or that Add/ Remove isn't there at all?

Answer:Programs wont install after download

I'm also having problems downloading programs off of the Internet and installing them on VISTA Ultimate 32-bit and VISTA Ultimate 64-bit. I've tried running the programs as an Administrator, and everything else that I can think of.

I even swapped out the Motherboard. In the end, I gave up, and called Microsoft Support. I had to pay $60. This was a week and a half ago. It seems that some systems will not allow programs to be installed if they are downloaded from the Internet. They have no known fix, and "are working on it". I just can't wait until this hits the news. An OS that doesn't allow you to install programs off of the Internet.

I believe it has something to do with either the authentication by VISTA, or VISTA corrupts the downloaded program. If you d/l the program on another laptop, put it on a USB drive (or a CD/DVD), it will install from there.

Good luck!

Although I can usually download programmes with Firefox and then install them there are some that will not install such as Adobe Flash or Whatsapp for Windows. They download OK but no window appears to click install. When I click on the downloads folder the exe file appears but clicking on it does nothing. I've tried Opening the Containing Folder and Running as Administrator but still nothing happens. Not end of the world with Whatsapp as can use 'Whatsapp Web' but without Flashplayer restricts what I can view. As I have an old machine using Vista OS do I need to find older versions.

Anyway does anyone have any ideas why I am unable to install certain programmes while others load quite normally?

I assume you've restarted your computer a few times since you posted. Any changes, or are things still stalling?

I'm running OS WinXP Home with SP2 Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz 2.67GHz, 504Mb RAM.

Have been having problem with what I think is the about:blank hijacker and began working through the READ & RUN post, but seem to be unable to download or install a few of the programs on the list.

I managed to get CCleaner, AdAware, and Spybot, but then was not able to get MS Windows Defender or MS Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. Got HJT and CWShredder, but was also unable to get Kill2me.

With both Win Def and Malicious Soft Remov, the process goes through normally as though it is working, but it just doesn't. There is no error messages. I've tried both, opening the files and running them and saving them to the hard drive to try to install from there and neither way was successful.

Kill2me was different, it was stopped by windows security. When I tried to follow the instructions to unblock it, there was no unblock option. Don't actually know if I need it, was just going to use everything just incase.

To begin with I thought, maybe the Win Def and Malicious problem was a download problem, (even sent a report error msg just incase *sheepish*) but then when I was reading the "Before You Post Asking For Help, Please Read This" post, I tried to get the program to tell me my system specs and it did the same as what I'd been experiencing with the other two.

Answer:Unable to download/install some programs in READ&RUN

Was just reading about download probs in the FAQ section and thought I should mention that I'm also running Norton Internet Security 2006. Firewall is on, but as I said before, there is no error msgs or snything when I'm trying to do these downloads, it all appears to work, the files just don't appear or the install thing doesn't come up. Plus the fact that the first few I downloaded went ok. Could it still be the problem?

One difference between them though is that for the others, I used one of the Australian download links (not the planetmirror, the other one) but for the two windows files, they both only have an "Author" link? Could be relevant?

Anyway, hope this helps.

Ok, here's my trouble..I am running in safe mode, when I am in norm mode system locks up fairly quickly after I try to access any program especially IE. I have tried to download and install Stopzilla and get a message telling me system admin has policies set into place preventing install. I am running XP home on a HP pavillion. So I have a couple of issues going on. I have ran Spy-bot and AVG. Spy-bot is clean but I do have a txt. file for AVG showing alot of not tested files and also have ran hijackthis, which at my level of experience I can't interpet the data due to lack of knowlege. I did notice from reading another post that I need to change the program name for(hijackthis). Is it to late, do I need to uninstall and rename it when reinstalling?

As I mentioned before if you suspect malware is causing problems, then you need to read the link I gave you earlier .. this one

If you decide you want to follow those procedures then you need to remember to attach the 4 requested logs once completed to a NEW post in Malware Removal section and not here in this forum.

Hello All,

My current employer has AD Roaming Profiles turned off due to sync issues between DC1 and DC2. Since I am not an admin on the network I'm unable to do this from an admin point, but I do have full control in my AD Profile.

Due to roaming profile being turned off, I have to take time to setup at a new computer if needed.

I was wondering if I could just create a batch file that would setup everything I use.

This includes: Creating Shortcuts on the Task Bar, Creating Desktop Shortcuts, Move programs/files to the Startup Folder, Download additional programs.

I am not wanting someone to create it for me.

I am wanting to know is this possible from a Limited User account, and if so, a nudge in the right direction.

I got a popup notice from my anti-virus program saying I had malware and a virus, so I used Malwarebytes, it found 5 risks, so it removed all of them, but when I rebooted, none of my programs worked when I double clicked on them. When I did, it said either C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\MicrosoftWorks\WksWP.exe and underneath that, it said Application Not Found. That was just for Microsoft Works. A similar message with the Application Not Found pops up on a lot of program I try opening.

When I go to open programs like Firefox, Internet Explorer, Calculator, Quicktime, etc., an Open With box pops up and says: Choose the program you want to use to open this file: firefox.exe or calc.exe for calculator.

I am able to open these programs as administrator and I don't get anything that pops up and tells me that I need another program to open it.

Also, my computer won't let me install anything. For instance, this virus appears to have wiped out Adobe Flash and Reader and when I go to install them, a box pops up and says Application Not Found. Also, my webcam doesn't work.

My computer runs on Windows 7. It is a Toshiba laptop.

One difference between Windows 7 and earlier OS. You cannot download with Windows 7 unless you are activated. Make sure that you are, indeed, activated, even if you are sure that you did activate your OS.

I have a Toshiba Laptop that uses Windows Vista. I tried to run Malwarebytes last week and noticed I could not update the program. I ended up deleting it thinking there was something wrong with the program and tried to download it again.

No matter what I did, I could not get my computer to install the program. I kept getting a corrupt files, please download again message or some other bogus language error message when I tried to install Malwarebytes. I tried saving the program under different names, in different locations, etc. to no avail.

The problem extended to ANY program I tried to download. It wasn't exclusive to security software. I couldn't even download active X without getting a files corrupt message.

So,after looking online and not finding any help, I reformatted my computer. I first deleted all the information on the hard drive (the reformat disk did this), including partitions, and then reformatted everything.

Well, the problem still exists. I cannot even update my computer without getting an error message. My computer is 3 years old so a lot of programs need the newest version and I can't get them. I can't even update the included McAfee software that is hardwired. When I try to update McAfee it says there are no updates available. This of course isn't true since the version that comes installed is 3 years old.

I did get Hijackthis to work, so I really hope someone can help me as I'm moving backwards.

Answer:When i download programs my Windows 8 doesn't open them

As you are running 64bit OS, perhaps the versions of the apps etc. you're downloading are not designed for it: although many these days are both 32 and 64 bit? Also are you logged in as Admin; as if not that may also be a reason. Usually (by default I think) many utilities and many apps require Admin privileges for installation?

Hi everyone,

Webpages keep being redirected to bizrate and bizoffers and any attempt to download software such as Ad-Aware or Spybot are being denied by Bad Gateway errors.

She can't download Hijack This or do any online virus scans because she's blocked from doing so by the spyware.

Would installing the MVPS Hosts file prevent the spyware from blocking access to these sites so that we can help her?

Please help.

Answer:Can't download anti-spyware programs or anti-virus programs

It would definately be a start. Also try this:

Right click on this link and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards. NOTE: This script will delete any sites you may have added to the Trusted Sites. So if you want them back, you have to add them back to the Trusted Sites again.

Next thing to try, is go into Add/Remove and check for the following programs. If you struggle removing, you can reboot to Safe Mode and try again.

I'm getting this incredibly annoying error on all computer's connected to my home network. Whenever I try to download certain programs, I get that error code. I need to install Windows Vista SP2, but I'm getting the exact same error. I've been told it's linked to firewalls, I disabled them all but no luck. I don't know where to go next, I've spoken to my ISP and Microsoft and they are baffled. It's an unusual issue since I'm getting it on a Windows XP laptop using wireless and a Windows Vista laptop using ethernet.

Any ideas?

I have Windows 7 Prof x64.

My question is, when displaing all software installed and choosing more columns of information to display, they don't stay. For example, choosing Location column. Getting out of the installed programs list and then returning to it, the Location column is gone.

Is there some what to get the columns to be persistent?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Question about Windows 7 Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

The Programs and Features listing is shown to you by the Explorer app. Each time that you open/close the Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a folder (or a special view/list like the Programs and Features listing), Explorer tries to write info to the registry about how Explorer was showing you that folder. Windows (file) Explorer tries to write this "how to display a folder" info at other times besides just closing an Explorer window, but I'll not go into all of that.

Microsoft has not solved the problem that happens when these places in the registry get too big. When this happens, you may see the problem that you are experiencing - that of no longer being able to store the layout/view/column width/column selection/... info in the registry.

Below is video that I made showing registry keys being made. (I'm not suggesting that you mess with the registry.) Notice that new keys are made when visiting the folder named Temp. Deleting this Temp folder does not remove those registry keys. If you close Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a compressed folder (a ZIP file), the Explorer app tries to make keys so that it can remember how it last showed you that folder. If you delete or move that ZIP folder to another location, the original registry keys remain. So you can see how this area of the registry can fill up.

edit: I had to make this video again. I hope that I covered all of the original points.

One solution is to remove all of the entries/keys in the areas of ... Read more

I'm trying to find a way to keep specific programs from being added to my Recent Programs list on my start menu. (In my case, it's to keep programs in my Games folder from showing up since they are already easily found right off of the start menu.)

Reading around I keep seeing the same registry solution ("Add the title as a value to this specific key") but that particular example, as others later say, seems to only work on Vista.

Does anyone know of a method for Windows 7 that has been tested and verified will do the same thing?

Answer:Hide specific programs from being added to Recent Programs? (Windows 7)

It just occurred to me that I have a program installed (Revo Uninstaller Pro) that is actually doing what I am asking for here. It is a Start Menu shortcut like any other with no additional parameters.

Speaking theoretically, of course, would it be more likely something within the program itself (such as running the program and at the moment of running it deletes the shortcut) or possibly the solution to my problem found maybe in the registry?

I'm just throwing ideas at the wall here.

A few days ago, noticed that my automatic Windows update did not download 2 new updates. I tried manually but got error code 8007007E. I also noticed that some of the desktop icons had a small shield on them and when I tried to open them, they would not open and a window would open stating "specified module could not be found". I tried uninstalling some programs and they would not install. Then yesterday, I had to remove the Vista Home Security 2011 malware, which somehow got through McAfee and my Malware security. I need some help to get these programs running and/or to clean up a corrupted drive.

Answer:Certain programs do not start, cannot uninstall programs, and windows update will not

Issue abruptly started about 1 week ago. All programs I open freeze and sometimes crash. If I try to copy past, I'll get a "Not responding" from explorer.exe. The only program that works is Steam. I can't scan with Malwarebytes of Spybot as the programs crash. Sometimes I can surf the web for a few minutes before it all crashes again. Tried a system restore, that failed - said it could not restore.

Also startup and shutdown time has increased from about 1 minute each to about 3 minutes each minimum

New install of 8.1 in April on a new computer build. Around June7 noticed I was losing my usb ports. Went to Restore and only found one. Performed restore. Fixed the usb. Then I tried to do another restore, couldn't. Tried and tried but couldn't create a restore. Then tried to install software for my dlink cameras. Couldn't install. Installer box stayed at zero forever until I tried to cancel in taskmanager... I couldn't then and had to shut down computer. After many attempts to install new programs I made a mistake and did a system refresh. Well, of course that wiped out all my programs. Looks like the refresh worked for cleaning off all the programs (even Microsoft office). Now I am starting over. Something is wrong here. After fresh refresh, I was able to do create a restore point and install some programs. Installed a couple small programs... then today I noticed the same problem when I tried to install Foxit, and Nero. Looks like I'm back to the installer install shield box stalling and then me trying again to install again with no luck. Its not working. What can I do? Does 8.1 need to repaired somehow. I can't go on trying to install some programs and not others... and realize its still broke. I lost 3 months of building this computer and it looks like its still screwed up. I didn't put everything I wanted on this system. Spring came and I went outside. I spent alot of money on these components (over 5k) !! I'm almost ready to call Microsoft and get some answers.

My recommendation would be to do a Clean Install, starting from scratch. The refresh leaves to much around that sometimes causes problems.

Windows Update
Repeat Windows Update as often as necessary until no more updates are offered.

Now start customization, data restore and program installation.

I know it's painful and will take time but in the long run I think you will be better off.

Been having a huge problem with my PC in the last few days and pretty stumped on how exactly to fix, and various fixes I've found online I'm not able to complete due to the issues themselves preventing it.
So to put it short, for a while now a few programs on my PC have been unable to launch. I click the launch .exe, on desktop or in the folder, and nothing happens. Tried running as Admin, compatibility mode, etc. but nothing works. Some, like Chrome which I'm using right now, are perfectly fine. When downloading CCleaner after being advised that could help, I realized the install wouldn't happen. I tried to install another program and, again, nothing. It seems no program will install now either, and usually crashes whatever file explorer window I have open. I downloaded it on my tablet (CCleaner), transferred the install files, and it won't run like that either.
And so now I'm here asking if anyone has any idea how exactly I can fix this. I'm on Windows 8.1 and can't even run the program to download Windows 10, which I had hoped would fix this. I don't have any install disc for Windows 8.1, it came with the PC.
It's worth saying that nothing happens with the programs. They don't open to then crash, they simply do not open at all. Sometimes a process will appear in the Task Manager but nothing else happens.
As I'm in the middle of Uni right now and can't install a few programs I need to actually do my work I am quite worried and any help would be appreciated. My PC's less... Read more

At my school we are doing a project that is giving computers to families that need computers but don't have enough money to afford to buy one. Our school district keeps up with technology and we have decided to give away about 100 computers. One of the big problems we are facing is what are good programs to run on a computer that will be running Windows 98? (We have already tried Ubuntu 7.04 but it was too slow and would frustrate the users) Anyways does anyone know a good list of legal free programs that we can install on the computer.

They are Dell GX1's and GX2's each computer has about a 10-20 and possibly some 40GB hard drives, we are hoping to get about 128MB of RAM.

One of the tech guys at my Vocational school (not my tech teacher though)told me about some kind of linux that we can get that has been made for low amounts of RAM but I have little experience with linux but I'm pretty sure it would be much better then 98.

Answer:Windows 98 Programs to install.

First i would say DSL or Puppy Linux.

Windows 98 hasnt been patched. It has not gotten the DNS patch or the latest patch that allows a machine to be taken over with just a simple code execution.

Windows 98 has not been updated in over 2 years now. It really should NOT be used in any way shape or form. Give them a really small distro of Linux instead. At least then if they use the net they will have some security. Better than the none IE4 will give them and Windows 98.

If you have separate partitions or hard drives in your PC, then you can install your programs anywhere you like. While you are installing the programs, select which partition/drive you want the program to be installed on. Ex: When you install a program, the default location is C:\Program Files\Name of the program\, you can change this to D:\My Programs\Name of the program\.Is this what you are asking ?If you have difficulty, then switch to the desktop mode and then install the programs. Choose the directory of your choice and install your programs there.CoolGuy

My problem all started about two or three weeks ago when Windows Security Center popped up saying that my computer was infected with various viruses. So when it prompted me to remove the infected files, it requested a password of some sort that I didn't have, so i just ignored Security Center when it came up. Then my computer wouldn't let me open Mozilla Firefox. I had to use Internet Explorer and then somehow I hit a button that would search for something using my default internet, meaning Firefox. So I found a way to get around the block Security Center was making. But whenever I would try to do anything some window would pop up from Security Center saying I was infected and it would ask me if I wanted to block whatever file it was. I decided to just ignore Security Center whenever it came up. Then, I'm not sure when it happened, but a window would pop up when i turned on my computer and it says "rundll32.exe Application not found." So now when I try to open up something I have to search through my program files to find something that will be able to open whatever it is that I need. I have been able to open up Firefox but if I try to open up something like Security Center or almost anything from Control Panel, it won't let me open it. For instance, when I try to open up Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel a window pops up saying "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found." I am able to open up most files,... Hello, I have been referred here by noknojon from the "am I infected" forum.  I am having several issues including windows update won't work, Microsoft security essentials won't update, and  I am unable to uninstall Microsoft related programs (mse, word, etc).  I have noticed a pop up ("click to run") that says "Microsoft office 2010 needs to be updated" but it doesn't look legitimate.  noknojon was giving me guidance but I was unable to get security check, minitoolbox, rkill, etc to run unless windows was opened in safe mode or sm w/ networking.  I am also unable to get dds to run.  If I try to double click the shortcut it locks my entire desktop where I am unable to click any other shortcut icons.  I am able to browse the internet on the comp giving me issues, but it won't shutdown properly along with the issues mentioned above.  I did a system restore prior to asking for help which may have be wrong to do.  I apologize for that and appreciate any help that can be offered.

Answer:windows/mse won't update/can't uninstall programs/can't run programs

Sorry, I forgot to mention.  When mse wouldn't uninstall I tried to use Revo Uninstaller and MSE wouldn't show up under the list of programs.  I then tried to use the "hunter mode" in Revo and when I would hover the crosshairs over the MSE shortcut icon it would list the file path to another program such as adobe or asus recovery.

Hi everyone I been having troubles with win8 and the 8.1 for sometimes. The first major issue I have that when I have programs open and switch from one program to another the mouse would not switch from one program to another when I click the tabs.
When I leaves my computer for a awhile or work one program while and leaves the other one up running I can't use the program because the system freezes. I don't know how many times I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del to unfreeze programs. Multiple times when working my home build machine.

Plus I can't use MS Explore becuase the browser would not stroll up or down. I have searched the web for tricks to fix these problems but unable to find anything or didn't know how to explain the problems.

I wonder if someone can help me. I posted on the microsoft support pages but nobody could help me and directed me here.

A few weeks back i accidentally downloaded a program that wasn't from a reliable source, which in turn downloaded a bunch of junk on my computer. It was stupid of me, i'm usually really careful!
I managed to get in and remove most of them, but then all of a sudden all but a few of my programs completely disappeared from Programs and features. Flash Player, Google Chrome, Firefox and a few other programs were the only ones hat remained. The major programs that were missing from the list are still working fine from what i can see, but i didn't get the chance to remove a few items of adware and they are still active on my computer and being as irritating as an STI (i'd imagine...)
On searching online how to remove these parasites, most of the sites suggest uninstalling from Programs and Features, which i can't do because they aren't on the list! All other suggestions have not worked!
I have tried going into safe mode (with and without networking) and setting up another user profile with admin but the list stays the same.
I can't remember the last time i backed up (Months ago i presume)
This morning i did a scan on cmd (sfc /scan ??) and came back saying "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

Sorry but the title is too short :P
Hey all, I'm new and I just bought the 830 128GB, and am having some trouble installing windows on it.
Basically, I have the GA-Z77-D3H motherboard and a 1tb HDD that I had for 5 month before I got this SSD today. My friend told me that I can install the OS on the SSD and still have the programs on the HDD running without reinstalling everything. First of all, is that correct? If so, how do I do it exactly? Install windows on the SSD and set it as first in boot sequence? I did that (I think) and it just gave me a brand new windows 7, with all the programs'es files on the E drive, but unable to run and start.
Please help me ASAP, I really want to have a 15 seconds boot time before I go to sleep :P
Thanks, so much, in advance, and I hope you have a great day!
EDIT: formatting is just done for the SSD, and I really don't know how to set up the boot sequence and how to install windows on the SSD correctly. Please help, I am a newb when it comes to computers, really.

Answer:How to install windows on an SSD while preserving HDD's programs?

Hello guys,
I have windows 7 ultimate SP1 and XP in different partitions installed, with all the latest updates and whenever I try to install most programs, they are corrupted from the download or will not let me install as it says:
"this file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher".
The thing is though, when i download programs in XP home edition on the other partition, they all work.
Eventually i realised that it was my Router's firewall corrupting the files (or so i thought) as i could then download some files, e.g FF wihtout them being corrupted.
However, now downloading Itunes or any anti virus software etc the downlaod is corrupted and i cannot install it. I made sure the downloads ARE compatible with win 7 x64
Any thoughts as to how i can fix this little problem?
Thanks, Firebus154

Answer:Windows 7 x64, I can't install downloaded Programs!

Hi -

Download program installation files using a different computer, different network oto a USB stick. Copy them in to Windows 7 or XP partition and see if they install. Don't install directly from the USB.

If they don't install, the problem is within the dual boot system.

I installed Windows 10 last year and had no problems with it for some while. Recently it's stopped allowing me to install any updates (i.e. Flash) or new software. It comes up with a pop-up box as below. There is a post in a Microsoft forum which suggests a possible fix - see below. However when I try to open the command prompt with admin access (I am an administrator on the system) I get the error 'This file does not have a program associated with it ....' Is there some way of fixing this ??

As you are getting the File System error (-1073741819), I suggest you to run the DISM command on your computer and check if it helps.

Method 1: DISM

Open Command Prompt with administrator access.Type Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthType Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAfter the repair is complete, restart your computer and try updating now.
Any help would be much appreciated as it's driving me mad.

Cheers Dave

Hello, new here first post.

I have a new SDD for my w7 computer.

I want to boot from SSD and use HDD for everything else.

I don't want to do a reinstall of w7.

Need step by step instructions.

I know how to physically install the SSD.

Don't want to loose my programs. Do have my docs, music, pics. backed up to an external drive.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:install ssd and keep all programs without a reinstall of windows

You can probably do it by either imaging or cloning.

Post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management.

A few questions:

How large is the SSD?

How large is the HDD?

How much space is occupied on your current C partition on the HDD?

Is your data also on this C partition as of right now?

You say you want to boot from the SSD. Do you also want your applications to be on the SSD?

If I understand correctly, you want to keep all data on a standard hard drive---none of it on the SSD?

Thank YOU for the attitude. Just because people don't jump to help you doesn't mean they don't want to, maybe we don't KNOW whats wrong.

You could use a spelling/grammar checker before posting with such horrible typing skills. L33t sp34k also doesn't help.

Now back to your problem.

Format. Plain and simple. It sounds like you somehow messed up the system by trying to remove SP2, and then re-installing without a format. Since you already re-installed, formatting probably won't be too big a deal for you. I say format and do a fresh install. This is possibly the remnants of a virus, and you don't want that coming back and bothering you again in the future.

I thought I had a malware problem, but I already received help in the malware support forum, and they directed me here.

My computer runs incredibly slow to the point that if I try to open IE it may take 5-10 minutes to open, and another 5-10 minutes to open a webpage. This happens with all the programs. It runs fine in safe mode.

Also, it won't install most programs anymore (Firefox, Private Firewall, iTunes, etc.). It also fails to perform windows update.

Computer Info:
Lenovo Thinkpad E420
Windows 7 (x64)

Please let me know if you need any additional information. Thank you for the help!

Answer:Windows 7 - Won't Install Programs. Slow.

Very vague, need more information.

If you did have Malware, specially ZeroAccess or Internet Security 2014, it is highly probable your OS has become corrupted and unstable.

Few steps you can try

Open Services.msc
Check for BITS(Background Intelligent Transfer Service), BFE (Base Filtering Engine), Security Center, Windows Firewall, Windows Update.
--If these items are missing, you may want to try the below step
Be sure to perform the SFC, and probably the CheckDisk scan as well before running the repairs.

Another option,
Try to run things while in Safe Mode, does the performance increase?
Try creating a New User Profile and testing things out there, it is possible the current user profile is damaged.

That would be your best starting point in my opinion.

Some say the programs/games would run smoother because its in the same drive as Windows. Others say install stuff in another drive and let windows have a whole drive , so that windows can run smoother.

Thank you

Answer:Should I install programs in the same drive as Windows?

I have done this both ways and I can NOT tell the difference in the way the software runs.

When I install software on the same drive as the OS, I do make a separate directory called "Programs" and then a directory for each piece of software inside that (just makes it easier when I want to uninstall a program/game).

By having everything on one drive, it does make it easier to use something like Acronis or Macrium to create a backup image.

I do use another partition or drive to save data, pictures or movies or for downloading from the internet.

Use which ever is easier for you.

Answer:add user programs to windows install cd?

You might be able to do something like that with vLite - Windows Vista configuration tool (says Vista but works with Windows 7 too).

You would be much better off to do image backups of your hard drive. That way you not only have all applications but also all data.

Hi. This is driving me insane. Before someone asks, yes I am logged in as administrator, I'm not that clueless. For a while I've not been able to install certain programs. Three examples are Rosetta Stone, Final Fantasy XI, and the Windows Install Cleanup. What happens is it'll let me choose languages etc but when windows installer is about to install, the bar doesn't move, and eventually everything just stops responding, and the mouse icon turns busy (circling), I can do nothing, not even ctrlaltdel, and must restart it. How do I go about fixing this? I've lookd everywhere and can find nothing, I can install some programs, some I cant. Specs are:Dell Inspiron 1545 LaptopIntel Core 2 Duo CPU P7450 2.13gz x24.00gb RAM32bit operating system, windows vista sp1I also had the same problems trying to use Windows Update and when trying to uninstall programs.

Answer:Cannot install programs in Windows Vista

I might have fixed it actually. Ran Spybot in safemode, turned off User control and Windows defender. Seems to be installing things but I'll check back later and say if it has stayed that way, maybe I just got lucky. Dont know why but User Control seemed to freeze things, if I'm correct, even though I was able to do other things as admin fine.

Thank you for allowing me to join.
I found you because I was following a thread: “How do I get programs from the Old Windows File into my new Win 7 Home Premium installation Programs File?”, but before it could be answered on this forum, the questioner posted that she “had solved the problem” and the thread ended.
Please tell ME how to do it, remembering that I am NOT a “computer guy” (my field was biology).
NOTE: the folks at Microsoft, who said that the Windows Update problem I had with Vista could only be solved by installing Windows 7, told me AFTER I had followed their advice and installed Win 7, that I would now have to re-install any old programs from their original discs! This in spite of the fact that the programs ARE on my machine, but in a file called Windows.old. Now some of these programs really ARE are old (not as old as me, but Photoshop 7, the one I need most, is from 2002) and because I have moved several times since originally installing it several computers and operating systems ago, the original discs are long gone. But all of those old programs that are in the Windows.old file on my machine ARE compatible with Win 7 (according to the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor that I used).
So what can I do?
And thanks very much for any help that you can give.

I have a Windows 10 64bit Toshiba laptop and a problem has developed since a Toshiba BIOS upgrade. AVG cannot update it says another installation is running which of course is not true. I thought I would uninstall and re-install AVG but I got same error message about another install already running. A Java update also failed to install. The Java website suggested error ( cannot install or uninstall any programme)caused by corrupt registry keys and provided a link to Microsoft Win fixit. Problem was there is no Windows 10 version available. Any ideas? Is there a "go back" function in Win 10 so I could go back to before the BIOS upgrade. Would this fuction work with a BIOS upgrade. I really am up the creek. Help!

Answer:Cant install or uninstall programs in Windows 10

Reboot and Disable AVG protection temporarily. See if problem still exists.
Try System Restore to before the problem (Press Win+R and type rstrui.exe )
If the BIOS upgrade program created a backup, you can try restoring that. Run it again to have a look.
Otherwise, look on Toshiba download page for your laptop to see if it has an earlier BIOS download available.

Answer:Can't install any programs or updates on Windows 10

Hi, you might try running DISM offline... I've never tried it, so you may need to research the syntax carefully:

DISM - Repair Windows 10 Image - Page 13 - Windows 10 Forums

To repair an image

Use the /RestoreHealth argument to repair the image. For example, to repair an offline image using a mounted image as a repair source, at a command prompt, type the following command:

Dism /Image:C:\offline /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:\test\mount\windows

Repair a Windows Image

More examples of the command here:
[the DISM command to repair the Windows offline system technology]
If that doesn't work, you may need to do an in-place upgrade repair install.

Curiously yours is the second thread in the last couple of days with this exact problem.

For example say I install a program and then go and modify the options and check a box that wasnt orignally checked. I am having a problem that seems fairly similar to that which this woman had:

I brought this brand new laptop home from Best Buy earlier today and I am having many issues with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit):

Toshiba Satellite? A665-S6070 Laptops

The first thing I did was install Mozilla Firefox, which went well. Then I installed the Kaspersky Anti-Virus software that came with the laptop, which also was successful. Then I wanted to install iTunes, and I downloaded the correct x86-64 version from the iTunes download website, but for some reason it refuses to do anything beyond the "Do you want to allow your computer to install this content?" screen. Just a few hard drive clicks and that's it. I tried to run the installer as Admin but it still doesn't work. Then, I tried uninstalling Firefox and Kaspersky, thinking that was it, but it still doesn't work.

I have noticed along the way that other pieces of software don't work that should. For instance, I thought maybe I needed to download/install Windows Updates, but it was able to install all but two of the updates. For some reason it keeps failing to install the Malicious Software Removal Tool and another one I can't remember.

Hi guys,
I have an old work computer that was never reformatted when I finished my employment there and I am having some issues with installing windows updates and removing programs from the computer.
Installing Updates -
When I check for updates it comes up with the error message -
"Windows could not search for new updates. Errors found: Code 8024402C"
I have been trying to fix this issue myself but have had no luck. The main fix online that I can see is to temporarily disable the security software but I am unable to do this either. When I click on "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" it comes up with the message -
"The snap-in below, referenced in this document, has been restricted by policy. Contact your administrator for details. Windows Firewall with Advanced Security."
So I'm completely lost as to where to start with this issue as it seems I am restricted to doing any of the fixes I have found online.
Uninstalling Programs -
There is no add/remove icon in the control panel. In fact, there looks like there are a number of icons that are missing... I'm guessing this is due to it being an old work computer as well. Is there any fix to this? I have located the appwiz.cpl icon in the Windows system 32 folder but when I click on it nothing happens.
Again any help would be much appreciated! I figure I could always reformat the laptop but I don't have any CD's that came with it and wanted to see if there was any other solution.

Hey Everyone,

so recently ive been trying to install a few programs to no avail. The progress bar gets so far before chucking up an error and then doing a rollback. Every program says a different error, but they all fail. This includes programs from the visual studio php IDE, AVG and Bit Defender. I figured maybe something was corrupt so i even tried unisstalling Visual studio, again to no avail, wont even start the uninstallation progress.
Also tried to do a system restore and it says its not working properly and corrupt.

Cause of these problems i guessed i had viruses etc, did a few prelim scans and found a few things, but no matter how many times i cleaned them, they still came back. Ive attached the logs so if any has any insight that would be great.
