Change default email client on Win7

Question: Change default email client on Win7

Hi,

I'm probably just wasting your time but I have to ask.........

Is there any way to change the default email client on Win7 to a web based email client such as Yahoo or my ISP's email client even? I'd prefer Yahoo since that is the one I need to succeed with an experiment I am trying to achieve results from.

I have searched the web over and found replies that range from installing the Yahoo toolbar to installing Yahoo Messenger to many threads that state it is not possible with a web based email.

If I remember correctly, I once achieved this on my Vista. Yahoo actually displayed in the set windows default programs options. Was I imagining that?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Out There --

Can someone please help me with this problem? I need to change the default email client in Windows 8 to Gmail in Chrome.

I thought that this would be an easy fix, but I have searched the Web, searched the forums, and cannot find anywhere that it tells me how to do this.

Besides the fact that I want all of my MAILTO links to use my Web based Gmail account, I need it to do so to make it work with OneNote.

In OneNote, when I try to send someone a page, it gives me an error message about Microsoft Outlook not being started or set up, and says to change it in Default Programs. I tried doing this, but my MAILTO links are all set to Google Chrome, which seems like it would work.

If anyone can help me, I would be truly grateful. Thank you for your kind consideration of my issue.

I use T-Bird (v 31.7.0) On 2 occasions now, I have sent emails, with Attachments, to a friend in the UK, who is running HOTMAIL.On each occasion the Attachment is OK, but the message I sent with ti increases it?s Font size, line by line, until it is unreadable. Two 3 or 4 characters per line??and sections of the email are repeated. 4 or 5 lines, then back to the top. They are blaming me for a Virus?..but I am thinking the problem is their end, with a stuck key, or similar. Any ideas ?

Answer:thunderbird email change font size in hotmail email client

I don't know what is causing this but pretty sure "what it isn't".1. It is not the usual behaviour of a virus.2. It is not a stuck key their end. Keys don't come into the equation for received emails.Try sending an attachment to yourself and some other contact who will co-operate. That way you should be able to narrow down which end is responisible for the problem.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi,
I have WinXP Home SP2 and Pegasus mail shows up in IE as the default mail program, and I don't want any email program there. The drop down menu in IE doesn't let me select "none". I'm not sure if the config in Pegasus would allow me to change this or not, but still, the drop down doesn't allow a blank. It has Outlook and something like possibly...MS Web Mail in there too.
Is there a way to NOT have any default email client listed in IE?
Thanks for your time,

Windows mail has been replaced with Windows Live Mail, as part of the Windows Live package. It is now an optional download and doesn't come pre-installed in Windows 7.

I have Office 2003 Basic Edition installed on Windows 7 Home Premium. From within Outlook I have set Outlook to be my default email program, yet clicking on any email link through Internet Explorer or any other program brings up Windows Live Mail (which I do not wish to use). From within Word, if I opt to send a document by using 'File-Send To-Mail Recipient', then it does use Outlook (this is the only instance I have discovered of it obeying my command). But if I use 'File-Send To-Mail Recipient (as Attachment)', which I use far more often, then, again, it defaults to Windows Live Mail.

If I access the Default Programs menu in Win7, it does not offer Outlook 2003 as a choice to make my default email program, even though the program is fully installed and is running in all other respects without any glitches.

If, from within Default Programs, I highlight Windows Live Mail and try to 'Choose defaults for this program', it does not allow me to deselect associations for the program, so I cannot deactivate Windows Live Mail either.

Has anyone found a way around this problem, or has Microsoft decided to force its customers into using Windows Live Mail as a default email client, thereby making it impossible to work with another email program that functions with full default email functionality? I have found a few threads about the problem but no answers to date.

There must be someone out there who has worked out a solution. Has anyone tried uninstalling Windows Live Ma... Read more

Hi ralphmurmegen! Welcome to SevenForums.

Just to double check that you have followed the following procedure:

Click Start.
Type "default programs" in the Start Search box.
Click Default Programs under Programs in the search results.
Now click Set your default programs.
Highlight Microsoft Office Outlook or Microsoft Outlook on the left.
Click Set this program as default.
Click OK.
Are you saying that "Outlook" does not appear under the "Program" list on the left?

OK,  you go to tools-internet options-programs and a list of default programs come up for email, groups etc.  The program I want to use when I click on mail in the IE toolbar is not an option.  Is there a way to add the program as a option?  I want to use Outlook Express but that program does not appear.  The only one that does is Hotmail and I have a charter email account I want to use.  I am running WinXP Home.

Answer:Adding default email client to IE 6.0

Do you have Outlook Express installed?  Is it on your Programs menu and/or on your desktop as an icon?

Dear Friends,

Hope all is well..

As your aware there is no default email client with Windows 7. All i see in default programs is Google Chrome.

So, I need to install I assume an default email client!? I would like this to be as "simple" as possible as I use this laptop so little.
Windows Live Mail I think would be more than I need..and I'm not familiar with Thunderbird, etc...

Please advise.

Thank You!

You know how when you're on Craig's List and you want to reply to an ad, it launches your email client, which by default is Outlook Express (or Outlook if Office is installed). How do I change this to GMail or Yahoo mail? I've gone to the Programs tab in the IE options/tools section, but it only gives Hotmail as a non-Outlook email.
Thanks!

This is a rather low-priority inquiry.

I get progressively more annoyed at the Send Image... right click menu option in firefox 3.*/xp sp2. Is there no way to remove or hide this option?

Changing the default email client to firefox or anything is a moot idea as the option still annoys me.

EDIT:
A friend saw this from the other room and tipped me off to the Menu Editor add-on to firefox. Mode delete this if you desire.

I use AOL mail in 9.7 AOL Desktop & I tried to set AOL as my default email client in the Win 7 Default Programs>Set Program Access And Computer Defaults>Associations/Protocols. There was only 1 "Protocol" showing for AOL Software namely "Mail To" so I checked it.

I did this because more websites are showing live links to email addresses (rather than the address) and whenever I clicked on the link to get the address it would only give a message "no email client" and I could not get the actual address.

Now whenever I click on an email link on a web page my browser starts opening an infinite number of new windows/tabs. I tried to go back into the Default Programs an uncheck AOL as the Protocol but it's greyed out (in the Custom drop down which is the only place I can even see it) and does not let me undo it. How can I undo this and delete AOL as the "Mail To" [URL: AOL Resource ID AOL Software" Protocol; (which is the only protocol that shows). I prefer to have no email client to what's happening now.

When I go to Associations & Protocols I do not see AOL Software listed for any File Type Extension nor do I see the "Mail To" Protocol listed under the list of Protocols at the end of the File Association & Protocols so I cant click on anything to make a change. HELP !!

I have recenly been playing around with various mail clients and Installing/Uninstalling them seems to have screwed up the default mail client on my system somehow.

Clicking on the default mail icon brings up Internet Properties regardless of what service I have selected as my default mail program.

How can I restore this and set my Outlook Express (or other mail software) as the default. I have already tried changing the setting in Internet Options several times and even telling OE to make itself the default and it is listed in Internet Optopns as the default, however the link just opens Internet Options instead of any mail client.

When I had Mozilla installed, it launched as the default regardless of any settings, but since I removed it it doesn't launch anything other than the options...

any ideas?

After switching from WXP to W7 I discover that I can no longer send email from a company's website. For example, if I am on Acme Industrie's website and there is a link for "[email protected]" and I click on that link to send a message I receive the following drop down window message:

"Could not perform this operation because the default email client is not properly installed"

I have no idea what that means. My email program is through Qwest which uses Windows Live Hotmail so my address might be [email protected]. When I open Internet Explorer my homepage opens to "My MSN" and the adjoining tab has my email. I have no trouble sending or receiving email so don't know why I receive the message "not properly installed." Typically when I click on an email link on a business website it opens a window on their website and does not default to my email.

So what default email client is not properly installed?

This is a tricky one. Any gurus out there with a plausible answer?

I have experimented off and on with various SSBs (Single Site Browsers) in conjunction with web apps such as Gmail and G calendar, usually on my Mac. I have found SisterB SSB, and am using it with Gmail and it works pretty well but I can find no way to make Windows 7 accept it as an email client in its own right.

The address in shortcut to it reads "C:\Program Files (x86)\MobileApps1\SisterB\SisterB.exe" SSB2
The SSB2 part refers to the Gmail link when seen in the Registry. Alas, the Default Programs options show no way to add this address as a candidate for Default Email client, just pre-selected options and their radio-buttons or a closed list of apps.

Others must have cracked this seemingly trivial problem! Can anybody hint the way for me to do so too, please?

Windows 10, Creators update, Outlook 2016.
I've noticed that when using my HP printer, I can no longer scan to email as an attachment. Once that button is pressed in the HP software, Windows 10 tries to open it's default email program (in this case Outlook 2016) and it cannot and give error: "The HP scan application is unable to open your email application and/or cannot attach the scan to a new email. Please check your email configuration and try again."
It seemed to be fine before the creators update, so I thought it may be that HP software was messed up after the upgrade.
I then tried changing the Windows default mail app to something else and switching it back to try and re-associate the default Outlook 2016 app for email, and that did not work.
Now I am thinking it's actually Windows that is the problem. To test, I opened the Windows Snipping Tool and tried to send to email attachment from that menu and it did not work there either. That function does not involve the HP software at all, and only deals with Windows OS talking to Office 2016 to send the file.

Hello,

I am going nuts trying to reset my default email program.

I NO LONGER want to use IncrediMail ..
Twice I have lost Folders with valuable email in them.
Once due to a System Restore, it corrupted file formats,
I can see them in the Identity/Message Store Folder,
IncrediMail just doesn't recognize those folders anymore.
There is NO PROGRAM to help me rectify that issue.

I'm afraid to remove IncrediMail because I'll lose more mail.
I want to set another email program as the default but IncrediMail
seems to be hanging on tight to being the DEFAULT.

Does anybody have a clue how I can over-ride IncrediMail ??
Feel like I'm batting my head against the wall.

I've gone to Control Panel > Default Programs > Chose IncrediMail >
Chose the Set Association for a program > It's checked like its the default
but it WILL NOT let me uncheck it.

I also went to Firefox > Tools > Options > Applications >
Down to mailto and told it to use Gmail.
Then back up to IncrediMail and changed that to always ask.

I use Windows 7, Firefox Browser but would like to set Gmail as the default.
If I can't do that please someone suggest something for me to do.

Thank You in Advance for even taking the time to read this conglomeration.

Regards, Jenn

Answer:How to force IncrediMail to release being the default email client

Hi:

Disclaimer: no personal experience with Incredimail.

That does sound odd that you cannot de-select it from the control panel.
Perhaps Windows needs you to have another email client installed, to be an alternative (either Outlook or a 3rd-party email client)?

I have used Thunderbird for 100 years.
Although it's not the only email client out there, it is free, well-supported (by Mozilla and especially by a strong user community), stable, customizable and robust.
And I know that, when you run the installer, it will prompt you to decide if you want it to be the default mail client.
Moreover, according to this KB topic here, there is a means to import your stuff from Incredimail into Thunderbird: Importing and exporting your mail

I hope this helps.

I've configured a fillable pdf document with an automated email address submission button, which all seems to be working just fine. However, when I test it, Windows doesn't seem to know which default email client to use for email purposes.

I know that to change your default email client you:

1) The settings are located in Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Set Programs Access and Defaults>Custom
2) Click the arrows pointing down to expand the Custom entry.
3) The email programs you have installed on your computer should be listed here. Place a check next to your preferred email client.
4) Press the OK button.
5) Exit the Control Panel.

My setting appears to be correctly set to Mozilla Thunderbird, but when I invoke the Submit (email) button on my pdf form, I get:

This posting has elicited a surprising absence of replies, so I thought I would try to resurface it, and append a little bit of additional information.

I tried initiating the automated email address submission feature again, but without great success. I reset the default email manually, and when I invoked the email submission, but that generated this dialog box.

From there, clicking Continue generated the following output from the Microsoft Exchange.

However, I still can't understand, why if I've set Mozilla Thunderbird as the default email application - why the email submission script doesn't pass the form through to Mozilla Thunderbird. Does any of this additional information help?

Dear Friends, Hope all is well.

I would like to find and install the most simple default email client. Windows Outlook/Outlook Express used to be included. It is my understanding it was stopped. Although I still have it and use it in Vista Home Basic.

If I right click on a desktop icon for example and desire to send that to someone., I get this line/message box. "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install and email program or, if one already installed, create and association in the Default Programs control panel"

Windows Live Mail appears to have a lot of things I'd never use and I don't know a thing about Thunderbird. I need to KEEP THIS as simple as possible Pleeze!

Any help deeply appreciated...

Sincerely, Raffaele

Am beginning to wonder if Microsoft ever launch a product that works with other Microsoft products.

First all the browsers no matter where stopped working in windows 8. I tried command prompt as admin netsh winsock r (worked on 1st computer running win 8 that the browsers failed on) , but this had no effect so I did a clean boot which seems to have resolved this issue (2nd computer with win 8 on that the browsers stop working but internet running fine on them.).
Before this was done all of sudden outlook 2013 decided when starting to display the message: Either there is no default mail client or the current client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft outlook and set it as the default mail client.

Now this I have done in all 3 areas, outlook, control panel and internet options within the IE browser. But nothing changes and they were all 3 set as default anyway.

Anyone have any idea why this happening and if there is a fix as I am getting to the point where I am beginning to despair with win 8 and outlook 2013 respectively, and recommend roll backs till they get their act together and sort them out.

In XP I made my webmail account the default email client -- so that when I clicked on any sort of "email us here" llnk on a website it would take my to my webmail automatically. I want to do that in Windows 7 also but I can't find where to do it. In the "Set default programs" part of the Control Panel it only gives me one choice: "Use my current email program". I don't have any resident email client.

I have followed the instructions to change yahoo to my default email. This is from How to Make Yahoo! Mail Your Default Windows Email Program - About Email and How do I make yahoo my default email in windows xp? - Yahoo! Answers I am running Windows XP SP3.

Problem is when I go into internet options through the control panel, then click the programs tab, under email drop down menu its supposed to state yahoo mail as a client. Problem is it does not. I install yahoo software but I still am not able to find it even though it says I should.

I have had this same problem in the past. I did yesterday have my computer reformatted so yahoo was no longer my defualt client. Anyone know the solution and why this is happening and how they can help me fix this please?

Answer:making yahoo mail your default email client in xp

You have to uninstall all of Yahoo software you may have on your computer now and restart. Then you have to install Yahoo Messenger. You have to install all of Yahoo's other software (toolbar, Default web search, Home page) and during the setup it will ask if you want to make Yahoo your Default Email provider. If you check this then it will appear under Internet Options/Programs/Email. You then can go to Add Remove Programs and uninstall Yahoo Toolbar, Search and change your default home page to whatever, if you don't want Yahoo.

Having just got a Win7 lappie, I'm after an email client that is similar to OE in a couple of respects.

A single click does Receive (and ideally Send) for all my email accounts (that are designated to be included, as per the way OE works).
All emails from all sources are shown in a combined view.

I've not tried Windows Mail yet, but it has been suggested to me that it doesn't do the above (and looking at some screen shots I can see what is being intimated at).
In addition to the above, I'm assuming that support for POP and SMTP is a given.
If Windows Mail does do what I'm asking, then fine. If not what about alternatives (e.g. t-bird, opera)

Answer:Email client for Win7 that is similar to OE

Fairly sure that Windows Live Mail does a single receive. It is what my wife uses having moved from OE on XP to Windows 7. She has more than one email account.
Combined view from all sources is ok but are grouped by email account. It is to the to not from that combines them. Thunderbird is the main alternative. As far as I am aware Opera is not similar.

I was a big fan and user of Agent by Forte when I had my old WinXP Pro 32bit rig (which is in the big-dump-in-the-sky).

When I installed Agent on my new Win7 Pro 64bit rig and set it as default, sending eMail would NOT work.

Through week of troubleshooting I found out there IS a problem with using MIME under Win7. So I went back and tried to UNCHECK the MIME box in default settings [Control Panel] [Default Programs] but I could NOT.

Tried uninstalling Agent and reinstalling it, but was no help, AND all my original Agent settings came back. So somewhere in Win7 the settings are kept and not cleared when you uninstall Agent.

I would really like to go back to Agent, so can anyone help find out how to clear ALL saved Agent data on Win7 or how to reset default settings.

I have Mozilla Thunderbird as my default email client. Also, my Explorer right-click menu lists Thunderbird as an option.

I'd like to have no default email client. Also, I'd like to get rid of the Thunderbird right-click Explorer menu choice.

Are there ways to accomplish this?

Thanks.

Answer:Want to: i. delete default email client; ii. remove right-click menu item

The following may help you remove Thunderbird from the right click context menu: Edit Context Menu Items In Windows 7 & Vista. If you can't do it through the registry, then try one of the free tool options. Before touching the registry, create a system restore point and backup the registry to be on the safe side - post back if you need help with those procedures.

While it is easy to change the default e-mail client, I don't know how to prevent the system from having something setup as the default, Why do you want no default e-mail client? If you do that (assuming it is even possible), then you will be unable to click on e-mail links to send messages. What problem is having a default e-mail client causing that you are trying to avoid? Perhaps there's some other solution.

I hope this at least partially helps.

Good luck!

I had win7 on C:\ and I partitioned 25 GB so that I could install the Win8 90 day evaluation OS.
After the partition, I named the drive X:\ and installed Win8.

I never seen it give me an option to keep my Win7 as the default. It just restarted a few times during the installation.

When I turn on pc or reboot to see if it gives me this option to choose, it doesn't, it just boots into Win8.
Of course I can not delete this win8 partition because I am in it.

I need to get back to my C:\ drive with win7 on it and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

One thing thats a bit of a pain with Win7 (probably happens in previous OS's too) is that when you go into a folder and 'arrange by' whatever; depending on whether its ascending or descending order, it'll put all the folders at the bottom of the window where I don't want them. I know you can change to details mode, hold ALT, click an arrangement column, then go back into whatever view mode I was in and it'll keep the folders at the top where I want them but I don't want to do all of that, I just want a 1-click solution or a way to stop Win7 from behaving like this, permanently.

I want to make it so by default, all folders are ALWAYS at the top of any window at all times. Is this possible? Thanks!

Answer:[win7] How Can I Change This Default Behaviour?

I have never had this issue in Windows 7. Only in Windows XP.
When you right-click > Arrange by > Folder, there's no Ascending/Descending.
You only have Ascending/Descending in Sort by. Irregardless of which you select, the folders will be at the top.

I had a computer running Win7 Pro, with 2 hard drives C (OS boot etc) and D. A while ago, D drive began to show some disk error msg, and so I stopped using it. Recently I got a spare drive from a friend, and trying to replace my old D drive with it. I opened the CPU box and unattached the old D drive, and I restarted the computer and confirmed that Win7 would still run on the C drive only. then I attached the new drive, and restarted the computer again. Apparently the new drive had OS installed on it, and computer started on that new drive. The new drive became C: and the old C drive became D. I tried to switch back to the old C drive by disconnecting the new drive, and got message "missing OS". From the computer property or msconfig I see only one entry "Windows 7".

I really need to boot from the old C drive (with all the applications installed), but don't know how.

Any advice/solution will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:How to change default OS boot disk in Win7

Make sure you didn`t loosen the cable or cables from your original drive.

There`s no reason your original drive shouldn`t boot to windows again.

Do you have an install dvd ? You can use that to format the drive you got from your friend.

If not then you could create a Partition Wizard Boot CD to format it. (from/on a working PC)

Actually, when Chkdsk checks a disk during boot process, it's defaulted to answer Yes to all questions. But in fact, one thing is that I usually don't want to convert lost chains to files (and I want it to automatically say No), while the default actions will automatically say Yes convert them into those what I thought mostly useless FOUND.xxx folders with several .CHK files inside.I searched about how to change those Chkdsk default behaviors but no useful results.Back to the time when I was still mostly using Windows 98 I usually run Scandisk with AUTOFIX and NOSAVE parameter to deal with this problem, but in Windows XP and even now in Windows 7 such options are nowhere to find.Is there any way to actually change the Chkdsk's default behavior?

Answer:How to change Chkdsk default behavior in Win7

I have never run into the problem but I assume the reason for that default is just in case you do need to restore/recover data from those files. The space taken up in minimal.

I wasn't aware that I had used an email to get the Windows 8 started but I guess I did. I closed that account and am not able to access it. However, if I want to get into the store, etc. It tells me to log in with that email address. It will not let me change the address in the login screen. How to do I change in on the computer? Where is that setting?

Answer:Change Windows 8 default Email

It has to be a Microsoft account. It merges in with your Skydrive account. Deleting the account is a very bad idea, because windows 8 almost exclusively runs from that account. So if that account no longer exists, and your computer is set up to connect to it, well that becomes a huge problem, because there is constant interplay between your Windows 8 and your Microsoft/Skydrive account when you are online.

You can switch to a Local Account, and from there you can set up a new Microsoft account. Or, you can leave it a Local account and this will be for the whole computer, and you can use another Microsoft account for your Store Account. Deleting a Microsoft account for any reason, is just not good, especially now, because they will all now be "Outlook.com" accounts. Mine is still linked to my original email address because I set it up almost 20 years ago.

To change to a local user, go to PC SETTINGS and choose Local Account

If all you want is for Gmail to open when you click a mailto: link, then download Gmail Notifier ( http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/index.html ) Install it, then go into Options, and check the box that says 'Use Gmail for internet mailto: links'. Done!
However, i'm not sure its possible yet to make it your 'default' email client, like for example, to get it to open when you press the 'email' button on your keyboard etc.

I installed Office 2000. I use Incredimail as my email program. After I installed the Office suite it changed my ability to use and reset my email program as the default.
It says that I must have administrative privledges to do so. I am logged in as the administrator.
Any ideas how to get this changed?
Thanks

Answer:Office 2000 - Installed now cant change my default email

You can TRY this:
Open internet explorer and go to Tools-Internet options, Programs tab.
Make sure your email program is in there.

But you didn't tell us WHERE you were trying to set the default...

Hello,

I cannot remove my Windows Live email account so whenever I want to send email, I had to click on the "Gmail" tab first then compose email and I don't want this because it's somehow not efficient.

I use the default Windows 8.1 Mail client but I never used my Windows Live account.

Is there any ways to remove Windows Live email or at least make Gmail as the default email address on Windows Mail?

Thank you.

Answer:Change default email to Gmail on Windows Mail.

What email client are you using or are you using the email app?

I cant find the solution to this outlook email formatting question, so if their are any experts out there, Id sure appreciate it.

I have a logo on my default outgoing email in Outlook. The logo is indented from the left side about 2 inches.

When I type a message in the email, the top 2 lines are formatted differently and all the way to the left. Past the first 2 lines, all the formatting is lined up with the 2 inch indent of the logo, which is what I want for all of it. But I have to manually adjust the first 2 lines on every new email.

I've looked all over and can't set it and get it to stay correctly formatted, so that it opens already set up like I want.

I know there are sliders that I can change, etc., but nothing I change stays changed the next time I open a new -create email -

Anyone know if or how I can get this correctly formatted?

thx in advance

Answer:Unable to change default email formatting in Outlook

Not sure if your talking about a template or a signature?

Can you post a screenshot, or the signature/template code, that would help tremendously in helping you out.

I would like to change current email default from my old Windows Mail to my current Windows Live Mail so that I can email photos directly from Photo Elements 5.0. I am on Vista Home Premium and suggested "HELP" procedures for changing default do not seem to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

When I respond to a "contact us" on a website or want my scanner to send the document by email, Outlook email is automatically chosen for the email program to send it. I don't use Outlook as an email program but use Hotmail or Yahoo for email. I have looked for a way to de-select Outlook and select Hotmail or Yahoo instead, and have not found where this can be done. Any suggestions out there on how this can be accomplished? TIA! Dick

Answer:Change my default email program from Outlook to Hotmail

I would think the easiest way would be via Start>Default Programs>Set your default programs.

You haven't said which version of Outlook you're using, but in Outlook 2010 you can change it under Options.

i use sbc yahoo dial-up for my internet provider. the default SMTP email is the main account, however the email i use is a sub-account. the only way i can find to change the email is through the registry. the POP3 and SMTP servers are still the same, but i don't want to unknowingly screw something up.

long story short, i would like the "email message waiting" notifier when i log on to be associated with the proper account.

i'm using windows xp home.

Answer:is it safe to change my default SMTP Email Address via the registry?

Did you contact SBC Yahoo! to ask them how?

I think if you want to mess it up, the registry is the surest way, unless you are an expert in your registry.

If I was going to do it by registry, I would
A) Make a new backup of the registry (and know exactly which backup file that is).

-AND-

B) Export the keys in question, so they can be put back if the changes don't work.

C) Then make all the changes you want.
