I'm transitioning away from using Gmail as my primary account, and have t set to forward everything to my outlook.com account. But is there a way I can bring my archived emails over so I don't hav to go to gmail to look for them? thanks.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
If you move everything to the inbox, and choose to retrieve all in the pop settings it will retrieve all of it. Then setup your outlook like you want it
Edit.
I was just thinking, use windows live mail, set up IMAP and add your gmail account. Then you can move all the email to your live email, and it will show in outlook.com too
I've not tried but I would of thought it would just be as easy as set your gmail up as imap in your outlook client and then just move the emails over between the folders.

I have been trying to follow this guide to get my local emails uploaded onto Gmail:
http://www.zoliblog.com/2007/10/24/simplified-guide-to-importing-all-your-archive-email-into-gmail/
Unfortunately it seems that this guide is for Outlook users, and I use thunderbird. Does anybody know of a way to import local emails from Thunderbird to Gmail?
I've heard of the "Gmail Loader" program, but AFAIK this program will strip the emails of their original send dates. What I'd really like is for a solution where all my local messages can be sent and stored on Gmail, with the original sender information retained, and the original send dates retained. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Here are the instructions from gmail to enable IMAP in thunderbird -> http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77662
Just attach to GMAIL via IMAP and the drag and drop you saved local email to GMAIL through thunderbird.
Make sure you enable IMAP in your GMAIL settings under Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
The question really says all about what I want to do, or need help on. I recently signed up for a new outlook account to try out the new outlook preview and I've set up gmail to automatically forward new messages to my outlook account so that I can use outlook to manage my gmail account.
Do any of you know how I would be able to forward the old messages, and not the new ones, to my outlook? I already know that they can be fetched into outlook by outlook's very own service, forwarding would be faster, so..?! Also, since I now use outlook to send email on behalf of my gmail account, how do I make it sync each email I send using outlook with my gmail - so that gmail has it all?
TY in advance. Please do help.
can't figure out how to add info into new smart phone, never used one before.

Depending on your setup in Outlook, your E-Mails should be in the All Mail folder.

I want to export the "sent items" mails in Outlook 2007 (Windows vista basic is OS) to the sent box in Outlook express 2006 on another PC having XP Prof as the OS. Can somebody guide me to do this properly... Thanks
Unfortuantely, this option isn't inherent to OE. In order to import into OE, you need to select another email program to import from. So, if you want to import your sent items, from Outlook, you'd need to export the Sent items to a pst file, then install Outlook on the second computer, then running the Import Wizard in IE to import the messages.I haven't worked with Vista, but if you could install and configure OE on machine number 1, you could run the export/import, then copy the sent items, dbx file from computer 1 to computer 2.If you own both computers, why not just install Outlook on machine 2?

I use Outlook 2010 which syncs to my IMAP Gmail account.
This works very well.
Today something happening in Outlook (I might have dragged something, I don't know) and my mails (12,500 of them) ended up in Outlook's deleted items folder. Some Gmail folders just vanished, like Sent Items, Bin and Spam.
I immediately quit Oulook before it synced so all my mails are still safe on Gmail's servers. I checked via logging in to the Gmail website and also disabled IMAP to be safe.
I need some advice on how to fix the emails in Outlook.
I'm afraid that if I start syncing the mails will be lost from Gmail.
I also don't want to start a new Outlook .pst file as there are many gigs of emails to sync.
Does anyone have some advice?

I have always used Hotmail with Outlook Express - I can send and receive Hotmail emails from my PC. But now that Microsoft have threatened to withdraw free POP access, I have decided to try GMail.
I have got my GMail working with Outlook Express. I can download all my received emails into a folder on my PC, but I do not appear to be able to download my sent emails.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks in advance for any information you can give.
Just a thought, send from Outlook Express, just have you Gmail account in the header.
I use Gmail for everything, but no longer have to log into their site - everything comes and goes from the Gmail account.

Hi, when I searched the forums for posts on Microsoft outlook I found posts in the windows and the computer software areas, a majority of the posts appeared here so I thought I'd try posting here.Okay, here's my situation: I currently have an email account with Adelphia and I use Microsoft Outlook 2003 to access that it account. I setup Outlook so that when I receive the emails from the Adelphia account Outlook removes them and transfers them to Outlook (meaning a copy of the emails don't remain in my Adelphia inbox). I've decided that I want to stop using Outlook, mainly due to the fact that it makes it difficult to access my emails from computers not on my network account. I've decided to switch to a gmail account (for other reasons involving irritation with Adelphia). My problem is that I can't figure out how to get my emails from Outlook 2003 to my new gmail account. I've looked in the questions and answers section, the forum, and both faq on gmail and outlook official pages and still can't figure it out. I think I've figured out a way to redirect new incoming mail, but that's not my concern what I need is to redirect my old emails. I know that I could just forward all of my old emails to my new gmail account, but that will be a huge hassle and the emails would then show up as being sent from me and not the original sender. If I can't figure out another solution I'll do th... Read more
I'm not absolutely sure but I doubt very much this can be done. Think about it. With Outlook, your mail is on your hard drive, not out on the Internet. With Gmail, it is out on the Internet; it's web-based mail. I looked at the info on Gmail on Google's site and, like you, found nothing about transferring mail from Outlook. So, I no other option but to forward the mail to yourself if you really must get it all moved over to Gmail.

Are there any other ways of migrating these emails across to their new account? Note that the migration tool offered by Google does not work as the Gmail account isn't connected to Google Apps for Business.
One possible solution is that I could migrate their emails via my Google Apps for Business account though I imagine it would take forever to then forward these emails onto them (most likely manually using the Forward) option?

Hi All,
I use outlook for about 4 email addresses (work and personal). I also do volunteer work for a charity and have an email address for that which is a gmail account.
I have tried repeatedly to set this gmail account up in Outlook but it didn't work. The only way I have found is to have two separate outlook account where I choose if I want to open my normal account of the charity account but cannot do both at the same time.
This is very frustrating as I need to be able to see my calendar and contacts when using the charity account.

Recently I synced Outlook with my Gmail account so that I could get a full interface without having to use a browser. My laptop crashed and now I can't access all of the emails I was able to access through my laptop using Outlook. When I set up Outlook, it only imported the emails from after the crash. Obviously the emails aren't stored on the laptop, so they have to be somewhere. Anyone know how I go about getting those emails back? They are important... Any help would be much appreciated.
how did you set up gmail for pop access
you can have the files on your gmail account
log into gmail on the web
and look at the "all mail" folder see if they have been moved to there
also look at the POP settings and see how its set up after the emails have been transfered to outlook - you may have set them up to be deleted
I use Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP and all emails I send to gmail.com accounts are appearing as blank with 'noname' attachments.

OK...Running Vista Home Basic on my Dell PC...5 days ago at 9:23pm I received my last email in Outlook (2007). Computer was idle at work. No problems for 4 years until now. 2 weeks ago went with a new ISP and did not change the codes for SMTP/Pop3/Imap because it was all working the exact same way--frankly, didn't think about it. Come in and there are no new emails. Hit Send/Receive and nothing happens. NO WAY, I get 50 a day. Go to Gmail account and it stopped at the same time. Find all new messages in Trash folder then all filters were removed to see what happened next. Emails were visible on screen (inbox) after that-and still are. After that, gmail icon started showing bottom right of my screen with my incoming emails--FROM 2009/10/11! All I had deleted last year and I am sure I emtied. My Outlook number of items in Inbox continues to grow every time I hit Send/Receive, lines "bounce" on screen as if items are going to appear but they don't. I get the outlook envelope showing emails from January to March 2012 downloading along with New Items in Mailbox icon as of today. I can hit on the email as it (icon) pops up and read it but if it passes it is totally GONE! Since gmail was fixed, about 7000 emails have gone into my inbox but not one of them are visible. I feel it will continue to download until we get to the present date as it is downloading from past to present. I have since entered the new ISP information, got the Congratulations on my test email... Read more
Any chance your old ISP was Rogers?
I thought that when you use POP , your email address is hosted and stored by the ISP.
Meaning, say your ISP was called Teleweb, your email address would have been .
I'm confused as to why you did not need to change the POP settings if you changed ISPs.
Im thinking your old ISP cancelled or disabled your email account, which may be contributing to the problem.
Also Gmail is webmail, so ISPs cannot influence how Gmail behaves. Were you forwarding your mail to the gmail account?
Until two days ago I had no problems sending gmail via SMTP.gmail.com. Now I get an error message saying 'Your outgoing server does not support SSL-Secured connections." No changes were made to the email account settings. I have checked them : the ports are correct and the SSL box is ticked for both incoming and outgoing ports. I use Norton and MS and both do automatic updates from time to time. I wonder if some update is causing the difficulty? Any ideas about what could be blocking my outgoing messages would be appreciated.
so I just connected outlook 07 with my gmail account, after deleting unwanted emails in outlook, the deleted emails still marked as unread and still there in my gmail account.
does any know how do I delete emails in my gmail just by using outlook?

Depending on how you're connecting to gmail it may not be possible. I know it's not possible to delete emails on the web server if you're using an HTTP or IMAP connection. By default, most tutorials tell you to use IMAP and POP isn't enabled be default on a gmail account.
To Enable Pop in Gmail:
Quote:
1. Sign in to Gmail.
2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
4. Select Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on.
5. Choose what to do with your messages after they're accessed with your POP client or device.
6. Configure your POP client* and click Save Changes.
To Configure Outlook 2007 to connect via POP:
Quote:
1. Enable POP in your email account. Don't forget to click Save Changes.
2. Open Outlook.
3. Click the Tools menu, and select Account Settings...
4. On the E-mail tab, click New...
5. If you are prompted to Choose E-mail Service, Select POP and then select Next.
6. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:
7. Click Next... You're Done. (Manual Cofiguration)

2 more repliesin outlook 2010, i understand one can use a gmail account without actually opening up the gmail account, that is he can run the account from outlook, does that mean one can delete messages also, just like a regular account.
when i try to delete a message, it deletes it from the inbox of that gmail account in outlook 2010, but under the gmail folder it updates itself, and downloads it again, even after i delete it from the gmail folder also.
thanks.
Hallo tapuz, you may have to sign into your gmail account and delete all your old messages.
From there select settings in the top RH corner
Then select Forwarding & pop/imap tab
In the pop download column go to option 2 and in the drop down box select delete gmails copy
Then select save changes.
This will stop gmail saving a copy once Outlook has downloaded it to your computer.
I hope this solves your problem, if not post back
Brief:
So we have a little networking group which is a Fun non-profit thing here in Atlanta,
and we have a little over 500 names on the mailing list and counting.
Question:
What is the Best Free solution to emailing the whole mailing list all in one go?
Problem:
Both Outlook and Gmail.com have restrictions over a certain number of email address's.
We tried Evite.com, but that has restrictions also, and many of those emails end up going to our recipients junk mail folder.
Insight:
We don't do any fancy invite newsletter stuff, but putting together a Microsoft Publisher mail-out would be a nice option. but we prefer the quick and simple shout-out with a few words on time and place!
Does anyone have a good solution?
Thank you in advance!
I don't know about in the States, or about other ISPs', but my ISP here in Canada would require that I have a business connection, not residential, in order to do any kind of mass e-mailing.
I have a Windows 10 phone. I use the Outlook Mail app that comes with the phone. My current email is a Gmail. When I loaded my phone I used my Microsoft account, which is also linked to my gmail account. In outlook, I made sure to ADD my GMAIL account and use the snych settings for email, calendar and contacts.
Calendar is great, contacts are great. When I check my emails, the emails come in just fine.
When I delete an email in the outlook app on my phone. The email is still in my GMAIL. I have tried to look up different things I can do but I can only find responses that do not work.
I would really like to use the Outlook app for my phone, but sometimes I do check my email on a computer. I would like those 2 to work with each other. Not by themselves.
As I have a couple of Gmail accounts, I use Outlook 2010 (running under Windows 7) to consolidate them together and use it for reading, sending and archiving all my emails.
Until recently I have been able to manage my emails without problem, but within the past few weeks I have run into problems sending emails using Outlook for my Gmail accounts. Messages are stored in my Outbook but will not send. This does not happen all of the time, only intermittently, and even if I press the send/receive button, or reboot Outlook 2010, the messages remain in the outbox.
The only way I have managed to send them is to reboot my PC and then restart Outlook - then the messages send automatically as they normally should do and the outbox is cleared. However after a while, and not on every Outlook session, the messages do not send from Outlook unless I reboot my PC again.
I have checked my email settings and as far as I can tell they are OK (as they normally work):
Incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com and port 995
Outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com and port 465
and outgoing server set to require authentication.
I get no error messages - the emails just remain in the outbox until I reboot the PC.
Can anybody advise how I can resolve this issue?
Many thanks for your help.
Does your antivirus software scan emails? If so try disabling that part of the software.
4 more repliesI've been using outlook 2007 to send and recieve emails for the past 3 years or so (recieving from my website's pop server, and sending through gmail --- my website's domain has been flagged for spamming). Last week, I started getting this error message as I noticed that emails aren't being sent:
"none of the authentication methods supported by this client are supported by your server"
I've tried double checking my login info, server settings, firewall, and even tried sending emails over a different network (work, home, starbucks..etc). I also changed the port number and security type as advised by gmail's troubleshooting...
Anyone have a hint for me???
Thanks
I had a distribution list for a mass email for some of our customers. But when we got Microsoft Exchange everything copied over but this one (the most important list!) did not copy over. But I checked through the sent messages and was able to copy the list from the BCC Field to a text file.

Hi - I have a load of emails in a .pst file and afger moving to a new PC no longer have a msoft mail client and exclusively use gmail. Can I import the emails in my old pst file into gmail?
There are several Outlook users who wants to migrate their emails to Gmail but get tired of search for the perfect solution. After a deep research I have found the best software which will help MS Outlook users to import PST to Gmail in one go.
Advik PST to Gmail Import is is equipped with advanced algorithms that easily import PST files into Gmail. With this software you can access your complete MS Outlook data into Gmail with attachment files such as email messages, attachments, contacts, calendar data etc.

my father (its always an aging relative, no?) has been subscribing (yes, they actually charge him 10$ a month) to have an email address with wmconnect
naturally, in my horror, i got him a gmail address, and now am trying to import his contacts, etc.
this is where i am not figuring it out - does anyone have a tip or trick out there on importing this stuff? i realize they are also with netscape and aol and its a big sticky mess
ultimate question, is there any way to import the emails/contacts into gmail? thanks! i appreciate the help!
My Yahoo mail forwards to my Gmail. Haven't had an issue in years.
I got an alert in my Gmail today that my Yahoo mail wasnt importing for the last 3 days. I dont know why.
I checked the error but its not familiar to me:
Error: Server is temporarily unavailable.
Server returned error "Error in RETR command: [SYS/TEMP] problem retrieving message."
I googled around and couldnt figure anything out. I set my password again (didnt change it, just entered it again) but that didnt fix it.
Can anyone advise?
Did you set your mail to forward from Yahoo (i.e. inside Yahoo's webmail page), or did you setup your gmail account to retrieve your yahoo mail (i.e. from gmail's "add another account")?
If it was the latter, try changing the POP mail server address you've entered. What's it currently set to? pop.mail.yahoo.com?
I am trying to work with Gmail. I have numerous email folders in Outlook Express that I sort my important emails in. How can I import them into Gmail. I'm not getting any support from Gmail at all.http://images.techguy.org/smilies/confused.gif
do you want to just use Gmail
so a mail received by gmail will be automatically assigned to a folder - like an outlook express rule
is so just use the gmail filer option and you can labell the email
works just like outlook express
However, if you want the mail you already have in outlook express to go to gmail - not sure what you mean
I just signed up for Google Aps.
I have a well organized pst file that I use all the time.
How do i import that Outlook 2007 PST file into google aps gmail?
The file is 2.4 gb.

It appears you cannot. See the link I have given below. 2 more repliesI am trying to import a .csv file from Microsoft Excel into my Gmail contacts. I have columns titled Name, Email, Address, Fax, URL.
When I do the import, the only things that show up in the Gmail contacts fields are Name and Email. All of the other items are imported into "Notes" for that contact.
I am wondering if there is a way to import these contacts into Gmail, with them all being placed in their correct places?
Thanks!

2 more repliesI have a CSV file from Excel of a set of contacts, and I want to import it into Gmail. How do I go about this? I've looked online but was unsuccessful in the method I found, which was: go to gmail----mail-----more----import-----file----- it didn't work.
Thanks for any guidance on this.
In Google mail: Gmail (drop down list) - Contacts - Import Contacts ...
I can't import my contacts. When I click the link nothing happens. I have gone through their troubleshooting steps and tried IE and FF. Anyone know anything about this, or have the same problem?
The import opens a new window from my gmail. Perhaps your popup blocker is eating it.
Hi,
I have saved my gmail contacts as a .csv file in excel. But, it does give this error message:
Attachment 236078
Although the data is there in excel:
Then I try to import to Windows Live Mail as so:
And it says "importing"..... and then nothing else. No contacts come in and no other message.
Please can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Sorry - didn't see this thread.
Yeah, the import in WLM and Outlook suffer the same problem. there is no "select all".
So you have to tick each field you want to import.... each time you perform an import. It does remember some fileds, but not the ones you might expect, such as name.
anyway, the default mapping should suffice - just tick all fields and try again.
I just created a new gmail account, and imported all my old email from my yahoo email account to my new gmail account. All my messages imported okay into gmail, but for some random reason, a bunch of the emails disappeared from yahoo, although most remained. I have no idea why they disappeared, but I didn't want them to get deleted from yahoo. I just wanted them imported into gmail while keeping them on yahoo too.
So now I'm trying to figure out how to export the missing emails from gmail back to yahoo again. I have no idea how to do this and I've been trying to find out how on Google for over an hour now. There seems to be no straight forward way to do this. I find this hard to believe. It took just a couple minutes to go from yahoo to gmail, so shouldn't there be a way to get them from gmail back to yahoo again? I just want to import what's currently in my gmail inbox to my yahoo mail.
Don't ask why - for now i just want to keep a copy of these emails on both yahoo and gmail. There's got to be a way to do this. can anybody help?
hi one way would be just to forward the emails to the yahoo account. could be time consuming.

Hi,
What happened Importing the csv file in gmail ?
Windows contacts can you be a little more specific ?
Livemail/ outlook.com/.... where your exporting to a csv file.
I am trying to import a large list of vcards from an old hosted email account to Google Apps/Gmail. I've read multiple posts online about how to combine multiple vcards into a single vcf file to import into Gmail. The most common method is to use the cmd prompt and enter "copy /B *.vcf all_in_one.vcf" or something similar.
The problem is when this file is imported into Gmail, only the last contact in the list is visible and all the other contacts are stored within that one contact. So, all I see is one contact of my hundreds of contacts.
Some posts said the problem with this method is that there needs to be a space or multiple spaces between each vcard in the combined vcf file. I haven't been able to duplicate or figure out how to alter the script do that.
Thank you for the help!
UPDATE: The simplest way to manage Vcards is to import them into your Contacts folder (Windows). From there you can export the vcards as a cvs file, which can be uploaded into Gmail.

Yes, you can save the Excel file as a .csv file and then go to your Contacts in Gmail. Select Import and then browse to the csv file and it will import the contacts. Hope that helps.

Thanks again for the replies to my previous post -the reinstall has fixed the problems with regards to Windows Updates, yet I have another problem that I can't sort out by myself and I'll need some help. This is what's happened-: I said before that I've since formatted the PC, and have put Windows XP Pro back on there.Yesterday, I went to my "saved" emails location in a folder on my D:\ drive to re-import my emails back into Outlook Express, or so I thought. This is so that I can put my old emails back before downloading the new ones that I have waiting for me at present. I went to carry out the Import in Outlook Express and got this error message: - "No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open." The messages are there in the folder on the other hard drive!!! - I can see them in Windows Explorer. I can't see what the problem is as I've always imported messages and contacts by using the Import command in Outlook Express and carried out the Import from the folder on the D:\ drive back to the C:\ drive. Do you have any ideas as to what is going on - I really need to get my messages back as there are some important work emails within these messages that I need to access. Please reply at your earliest convenience as I'm really desperate as I don't know where to go without having the old emails back on my PC in the first place. How do I g... Read more
I want to convert the contents of folders in my msn email program to text on my computer while leaving the folder in msn in tact. I do not want to import/export the msn folders to another program and leave the msn folders empty. How can I convert the contents of msn folders into plain text on my computer?
I wanted to reformat my laptop, so therefore needed to transfer my emails too. i have done this in the past with no problem. So I went to find where they are stored and got this:C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin Carroll\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{8AE1C31C-FE58-480B-9EE7-3E57DAB5F302}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbxMy Inbox had several sub folders with a lot of emails in them. I tried to go to the above location just to see that all the folders were there. But I couldnt find it with Windows Exploere, and still cant. Theres no "local settings". Anyway I dont knwo what i did but somehow moved all the folders to a thumb drive. I think I may have just copied and pasted them. And put them all in a master folder called OE. So now Im up and runnin with my reformatted laptop. I moved OE to my desktop, and tried to import. When I import I get a big list of all the folders/emails, all seem to be listed together. Now there all empty!!! But they ARE in OE with dbx extensions, and are not empty, they are a few kb each. I cant seem to import them. Also BEFORE I imported them, I had received some email today, and stored them in a folder. But when I imported, or tried to, the OE stuff, all the new ones disappeared. Im at my wits end... what hve i done wrong, and can it be undone? Many thanksKC
*And put them all in a master folder called OE.*Can you give a list of files and their sizes within this OE folder you have please.

2 more repliesHi All,
I have a mailbox full of a hell of alot of email, which should of been sent to users. However because the email addresses wernt set up right the emails went into the catch all.
Is there a way of taking these emails and putting them back into Exchange to be routed to the users? I cant think how to do it that way.
Thanks
well sort of...
I'd log into exchange as that catch all account (administrator in most cases). Sort the mail by recipient , then create .pst files for each recipient , move the appropriate messages into each .pst file then manually import contents of each .pst file into the proper exchange accounts.
it's manual work, but unless you're talking about 1000 users it's not bad, I did it once for about 160 and was done in about 4 hours (with 80GB worth of exchange database). although I did it during a migration that did not go se well, lol

2 more repliesI really have tried to find the answers to my questions but have found conflicting information all over the place. I am trying to set up a Windows 7 64 bit computer with Outlook 2010. My backups are from a Windows XP machine with Outlook 2007.
In looking around for the best way to transfer my email and browser files, some sites/forums advise using the import function of both Outlook 2010 and IE8. Others say to copy the files from the backup to the new machine.
Based on the advice from one site, I decided not to use Outlook's import function and instead I copied my backed-up .pst files to the Win7 \documents folder into a new folder i created called Outlook Files. Then I set up the account info in Outlook.
Now I have an outlook.pst and an outlook1.pst in the \documents\Outlook files folder AND i have a .pst file called in the \nick\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook folder.
When I run outlook, I see in the navigation pane three email locations or folders.I have the inbox and subfolders under "Outlook" and these appear to be the emails i transferred over.
THEN, i have which is the same level as the first "outlook" folder. It is here that new mails are being received. However, when it got setup it somehow had about 400 emails in it, the dates of which overlap with the inbox in the first "outlook" folder.
Finally, I have something called Outlook Data, which has nothing in it.

Typically the simplest way and the best way to make sure you get everything is to boot the host machine (Windows XP in your case) in WinPE or a Live Linux CD etc., and copy then entire \Documents and Settings\Nick directory to a USB Flash drive, in a Directory called NICK BACKUP. (assuming the user account name is Nick).
Take the USB Flash Drive to your Windows 7 machine log on as Administrator or an account that has complete admin rights. If you cannot do what you need you can always boot the WinPE or Live Linux CD.
Then you can copy from the Flash Drive \Nick Backup\Favorites to \Users\Nick\Favorites
Next copy from the Flash Drive \Nick Backup\My Documents to \Users\Nick\Documents
Repeat the same pattern with the information you want to have access to on the new machine.
The Outlook data is a bit different. The simplest way to get it is to EXPORT and IMPORT it.
On the Windows XP machine booted and logged in as NICK. Open Outlook and select export make sure you pick the whole tree of emails so you get Inbox, Sent, etc. Export it on the Flash Drive as NICK.pst.
On the Windows 7 machine logged in as NICK. Open Outlook and unload/close any other PST files you have loaded (Outlook1.pst). {Note you need to make sure the Outlook on the Windows 7 is clean, you may have to boot the WinPE or Live Linux CD to delete the Outlook1.pst or any others you created; do that before you do the import. Outlook has a bad habit of doing something you don’t want if you do... Read more

I have just installed windows live mail on my brand new laptop and would like to import my messages from my desktop.I have exported, successfully, to an external hard drive which I have now connected to my laptop to enable me to import my inbox from my desktop to laptop, however, when I select import from my lappy it says "messages cannot be imported from the MAPI client, an error has occured."Any clever brain boxes know how I can resolve this? What was the mail client on your old pc that you have exported from? (Outlook, Outlook Express, WLM ?)What is the file extension? (dbx, pst ?)In some cases you need to have Outlook installed if it was on the old pc.Also as the 'inbox' is a default folder of the mail client I feel you would have been better to have put your emails into another folder of your own creation before exporting them.
1 more repliesHello, So hoping I can get this resolved. I've spent days reading on here and haven't had any luck. Here's the problem. I have Windows XP. I guess since I purchased my computer in 03 I have OE3 (I know it's a dinosaur but need to get these emails before I buy my new computer). Out of nowhere all of my emails in my inbox were gone. I finally found them. I put them in a file on my desktop. I have many sub folders...Bill emails, saved emails, etc. They are all dbx files. I can't open any of them. I read stuff about inbox.bak but I don't see that anywhere. Under properties I found the location of each sub file. I then tried to import, but I received a message that OE was open. So, they wouldn't import. I'm not the best at following computer commands but can do okay. So, how can I import and be able to read these messages. I want to save some and delete a lot, but need to read them first. Help!

I recently had a hard-drive failure, so reinstalled everything on a new HD. Since then I have salvaged all my old files from the old HD using recovery software (Handy).
I was using using Windows Live Mail (WLM) on the old HD with Vista, and I'm still using WLM on the new HD - with Windows 7.
I can see all my emails (of several years) via the hotmail webpage, however when I added this hotmail email account to WLM I can only see the last 9 months via WLM. Weird.
So I have gone back to my salvaged HD and copied over the emails (as eml files) and then tried to import into WLM using the "import messages" function.
The first step in the import function is to select the email format - so select WLM. Next step is to browse to the folder containing the emails, then click "next".
Unfortunately it fails at this point with the following message :-
"Import Messages
No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have fioles open"
This happens for any folder I select, and I am definitely not accessing the folder with any other application - so I'm stuck, I don't understand the problem.
(I also tried copying and pasting the emails over into the correct new folders in WLM, but of course these are simply ignored by WLM, so that doesn't work).
Please can anyone advise me on what I need to do to import all my old emails into WLM (they ar... Read more

Windows Live Mail - Export and Import Email Messages
Hello,
I was unable to view every thread, so I apologize if this is a duplicate answered issue.
I'm attempting to import address book and email folders from old drive on to my new system. (Old Drive in same box) Nothing is happening. When I browse the path to reach the dbx. files nothing shows. When I look at the file through My Computer I can see the dbx.'s and then when I attempt to load them in OE, I get the following message.
No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required fields open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open.
I don't see anything running.
As for the address book entries.. are they generally stored in a "Windows" file? I've been unable to find those. I have found files that say they are wab files however when I choose this (Through My Computer View) It opens an empty address book as if I am in OE.
Any advice is helpful..
THANKS
Have you tried using ctrl+alt+dlt to look for a program that may be using the files? Like Microsoft Outlook maybe?
I can export and import contacts--no problem, but the messages just have a sender name, title and first line. The content of the email message is lost. This is from Outlook 2000 -- full office version-- to 2003 full office on new Toshiba laptop. I would also like to back up these emails--but looks like the backups would be worthless.
I have tried .csv for dos and windows, excel, pst, tab separated values--nothing works. The import process works--but no message content appears.
What is the trick? it doesn't ask for id, password, etc. I didn't find anything on Microsoft's site.
I didn't try archive--I think that asks for an id # and I don't know how to install that. I have a huge inbox with about 30 folders, including sub-folders. I guess I could try to export a piece at a time? I am a home user, XP pro to XP media edition. Plenty of space, etc. Exporting always worked before....
Any help would be appreciated. I have puzzled over this for several months.

Hi libbyinabq
Instead of Importing, just copy the Personal Folders (.pst file) to the other computer and open it with Outlook 2003.
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Let us know if that works for you or not.
Hi,
I don't know if it's a bug, but my Netscape 4.79 mail crashes alot lately. I have never looked for an alternative before, but which stand alone email clients could you recommend that can perfectly import my NS 4.79 emails, is secure, and preferably has a similar interface. With similar interface I mean that I like the fact that in NS mail you can your layout so that your mail folders are top left, list of messages top right and the active message full width bottom. Is it true that with Outlook for example it's impossible to have your message full width of the screen (that the mail folders are always on the left)?!
Anyway, which email clients do you recommend that are similar to NS mail. Is Eudora a good choice? How is the layout as I explained above? Which others?
Thanks for all good suggestions!
I've heard great things about TheBat . I'm not familiar with it so I don't know if it has the features you want. Worth taking a look though.

I also tried copying the DBX files from the XP account and to import them using the Vista Windows Mail, but when I click browse, I cannot see any DBX files or anything for that matter.

My employer (School Board) requested all staff laptops be returned over summer so the OS could be upgraded from Win 7 Enterprise, so I did an export of my Outlook 2010 file to work on from home- they now want all Outlook profiles below 50 MB. My personal laptop (Win 7 Pro with Office 2010) died last Tuesday before I could import said file. New ASUS G771J laptop came with Win 8.1 Home which I upgraded yesterday to Win 10 Home. Employer is moving to Office 2013 so I installed the HUP version yesterday as well.
Am now trying to import a password protected Outlook 2010 file (backup.pst) that was backed up from the work Acer running Win 7 Enterprise computer and Office 2010. I use Thunderbird or Gmail as my email client so will not use Outlook 2013 beyond weeding through this mound of work emails.

Both backup files are named differently depending on the Outlook version 2010 (backup.pst) and 2013 (Outlook.pst) so I copy/pasted the 2010 file into the same folder as the 2013 file then renamed the 2013 file to Outlook.OLD hoping that would trigger Outlook to accept the 2010 file but Outlo... Folks I have read the MS tech notes on how to get Outlook 2003 [I have it via Office 2003 Professional, full install] to import from OE6. It fails under either option: import from "another program" or "Import Internet Mail....". Under the former it is pointed to the correct folder, but fails with Error: Cannot open,.. another program in use" but there's not... I tried copying the folder to a nice clean location on the C: and checked all the properties, nothing interfering, still won't open the folder.
Under the latter option it just doesn't do anything after directing it to the correct folder. Seems to accept the command, closes the window, but does not import anything. No error messages.
Umm.... do MS teams communicate with one another??
Closely related: If I could just get the FOLDERS I had setup it would be a great asset, or if i could just get the ADDRESS book it would help. Do you know how to import *.dbx folders into Outlook 2003? Or the old outlook Express address Book?
thx
z
They are written in two different formats that are uncompatible. The Oulook Express has a file sytem totally unique to it.
I had the same problem about 6 weeks ago going from XP to Win7.
I had to transfer address book to notepad and put it into Outlook one at a time. The old mail sits in the old PC.
I have heard you can transfer the OE mail files over to Windows mail or gmail etc. Then transfer files from the new mail server to Outlook.
File system is changed over with the mail transfer- I haven't tried it though.

I have tried to import my .WAB file from Microsoft Office Outlook 2002 to Outlook Express. I used File, Import from within Outlook Express. I select the .wab file to import, and I get a message in about 1/2 a second saying it has been done but no addresses are imported.
Do you have to have both programs open? Is there another way to import addresses into OE?
Okay basically as the title reads. I have a user and they have outlook 2004 on their machine at work. They need to be able to take the .pst file home and import it into outlook 2000. What tools if any are out there which would enable me to do this? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
If they have exported to an .PST file, then Outlook should be able to can import the file, unless there's backwards incompatibility from Outlook 2003 and 2000.

Not all that fussed with the '07 Office suite, I uninstalled it and then reinstalled Office 2002 but when I try to import the pst file to this earlier version of Outlook, it tellss me that it is not compatible and to contact the Administrator (me!).
If I cannot work around this somehow I intend laying on the railway tracks quite shortly as life without my files will no longer have any meaning to me!
I guess as a last resort I can download the latest trial of 2007 Office and see if that will let me re-import the backed up pst file but what a drama!
