IE9 Reopen Last Browsing Session option is not working

Question: IE9 Reopen Last Browsing Session option is not working

I just downloaded internet explorer 9. Previously, I was using IE8. Every day, when ie8 would open up (it would load automatically at startup from AOL IM), I would go to Tools -> Reopen last browsing session, and all the tabs and pages I had open when I closed my previous session would load (though in reverse order left to right, annoyingly).

Now that I'm running IE9, when I go to Tools -> Reopen last browsing session, the option is greyed out - it does not work. The only time it works is if I close IE9 and then reopen the browser without rebooting. If I reboot, which I do every day, the option is not available like it used to be in IE8. (Seems like every time I download an updated version of anything anymore, something inevitably stops working or is worse than it was before - this soooo tiresome.)

I've tried a regedit I found somewhere on these forums - setting for 'turn off reopen last browsing session' to 'disable'. Didn't work.

I do not have IE9 set to delete my browsing history on exit.

I have the box checked for Automatically recover from page layout errors with compatibility view.

So, currently I'm out of ideas - can't find anything else.

I would really appreciate it if anyone who knows what is going on with this could share.

Preferred Solution: IE9 Reopen Last Browsing Session option is not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: IE9 Reopen Last Browsing Session option is not working

So does anyone else have this problem? Since the Reopen Last Browsing Session is kind of a deal breaker, I would have thought that there'd be a fix by now. But maybe the fix is to uninstall IE9 afterall. So much for IE9. Firefox and Chrome do this anyway, correctly, even WITHOUT having to select an option. I'd skip IE altogether if I didn't need it for work.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and experiencing a huge inconvenience. The reopen last browsing session does not work. I locked the computer last night via Windows key + L. This morning when I wanted to resume my work, I found the computer had installed updates and rebooted. I opened Internet Explorer but reopen last browsing session was grayed out so not an option. I had 8 tabs open but now I have nothing. I never had such a problem with XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Any suggestions to solve this would be appreciated.

Answer:"reopen last browsing session" not working

Hello Doug, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Sometimes when the computer restarts like that, the last browsing session is not remembered. Usually this works best when you close IE instead.

In addition, you may see a "Restore session" message at the bottom of IE when IE was unexpectedly closed from a restart or IE crash.

I just wrote a long post and it disappeared while trying to run that spell check on it. Very annoying.

Here, again, is my problem:

When I close IE 8 or 9 with several tabs open, and later reopen it, the option to reopen or restore the last browsing session is ALWAYS grayed out in both the menu under Tools and on the New Tab pages.

I had a nasty rootkit infection of volsnap.sys that was mostly affecting IE, which was detected and removed by ComboFix with help from MajorGeeks, just a week or two ago.

Since it was always changing the mischief it did, mostly regarding IE, I suspect that "part of it" is still on my machine.

A MS support forum led me through several steps to try to fix this, including uninstalling and reinstalling IE 9. Then they gave up and said I had to reformat my HD and reinstall my OS. I suspect that wouldn't be enough...

I really depend on this function, and have used IE for many, many years, and don't want to switch browsers. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Answer:reopen last browsing session grayed out in IE

Reformatting and reinstalling your OS most definitely will get rid of any nasties present on your system. If you do a clean install, as suggested, I'll be your browser's behavior returns to normal.

I have Windows 8.1 using IE11 and I am unable to reopen browsing history. It is always gray shaded. It doesn't matter how I close it or if I reboot. If I close IE and reboot, it's gray shaded. If I don't close every tab - just leave them all open and close IE - then open IE again without restarting, it is gray shaded.

I seen some other posts about this that aren't quite the same problem (and/or haven't been resolved) and someone mentioned that it's gray shaded because there is no browsing history to reopen. Trust me, there is. I don't delete my browsing history after each session. Besides, everything is in my history folder - my browsing history is just fine. I just can't reopen previous sessions.

I have not been able to find help anywhere so I thought I'd finally ask.

My ie 10 is set up so that "new tab" shows my "frequent" pages (2 rows of 5). However for some unknown reason about 2 weeks ago it stopped showing anything in the thumbnails.
I have attached a screenshot to show what I mean.
The only thing that I can think of around that time that I changed is just I know that I changed the option in explorer's view files to make my thumbnails/icons to show the preview image on them (instead of just the generic folder icon or whatever). But I doubt that would have any relation to this starting.

Also, since its on ie also, I have another BIG irritation, and this one has been screwed for a LONG time... I can NEVER use "reopen last browsing session" in tools & only about 1 in 5 times AT MOST can I use "reopen closed tabs" on "new tab's" page. It does not seem to matter under what situation the tabs were closed (by user, force closed by ie, etc). I actually use Chrome a lot more DUE TO THIS not working! Any clue why? It usually not even clickable however when it is, after I click on it, nothing happens except the option then just becomes unclickable.

Thank you for any assistance.

Answer:"frequent" thumbnails + "reopen last browsing session"

The first issue can be caused by clearing the browser's history.

I would recommend up upgrade to Windows 8.1 and get IE 11.

I am using Windows 8 with IE10 and for some weird and wonderful reason, the "reopen last session" is greyed out. I saw on the Windows 7 forum that there was a download fix for that but didn't dare to take that on for Windows 8.
Any ideas as to a simple fix for this snag?

Answer:Reopen last session greyed out

Hello Gloosecap,

The Reopen Last Browsing Session option would only not be grayed out if there was an actual last session to reopen. If you cleared your browser history after closing IE10, then there will be nothing to reopen.

If that wasn't the case, then you could use OPTION ONE in the tutorial below to enable Reopen Last Browsing Session in IE10 to see if that may help.

I have tried upgrading from IE9 to 11 on both my Windows 7 computers. One worked with no problems, but the other gives repeated problems despite trying a number of things. I have uninstalled and reinstalled four or five times but the problems remain.
1. History gets wiped out and remains blank no matter how many sites I visit.
2. I have to re-enter user name/password every time I leave a site and return
3. If I click new tab it is always blank and the option to reopen last session is greyed out

I even tried IE10 but had the same problems.

In internet explorer when i open it up and restore my last session it opens up many windows, including my last session, a session i may have had 2 weeks ago and other sessions?

Answer:Internet explorer last browsing session opens up many session points!

I believe this is the explanation of why this happens....

The behavior of Internet Explorer only remembering the very last window closed is by design.
This happens because each new window becomes a new session.
Internet Explorer is designed to remember the last, not necessarily the most important, window/session that was open.

just installed IE8 the other day, and need some advice. i have CCleaner installed on my pc, and whenever i have finished on the internet, i run CCleaner. but i noticed that IE8, still has my browsing history, if i open a new tab and click on 're-open last browsing session'. why is CC not deleting this info? i know that IE8 has the option to 'delete browsing history on exit', but if i have this box checked, it takes about 20secs to close my browser window. is there a way round this, or is it something i just have to live with, unless i go back to IE7?

Answer:re-open last browsing session on IE8

IE8 is still in Beta testing. There have been instances where IE 8 has caused machines to become unbootable. I highly recommend going back to IE 7 until IE 8 has officially been released. As for the CC problem:Open CC and make sure all of the boxes are checked under "Internet Explorer". Some of them include Temporary internet files, cookies and history.Go to options and then advanced and uncheck the box labeled "Only delete temporary files older than 48 hours"Now run CC again.

Whenever I start the browser and try to open the "Reopen the last browsing sessions" feature IE8 hangs and I have to always use Task Manager to end the process .But I have observed that in the Processes tab of Task Manager the IE process still runs even after closing the browser. This means a IE8 process may be running in the background and this may be causing the problem.I tried to kill this IE8 process in through Task Manager but it is not closing. So please help me to solve this problem,As I have to reopen all the tabs one by one every time.I surf a lot for my project and "Reopen the last browsing sessions" feature is very helpful.Thank You. - Helmi.

Earlier tonight, my computer crashed unexpectedly. I restarted the computer and reopened Firefox, expecting to see the relief-inducing "Well, this is embarrassing . . ." Restore Session page. When this did not happen, I quickly Googled appropriate courses of action. I have explored the Profile folder to no avail; there is one file called sessionCheckpoints.json, and within a subfolder "sessionstore-backups", I have three options: "previous" and "recovery", which will not let me open them, and "recovery.bak", which, like the Checkpoints file, might let me open it if I were willing to let my computer seek out the program it requires for this action. Due to my general inexperience with computers, I am reluctant to give my laptop that kind of free rein, especially because the Internet told me to look for files named "sessionrestore.js" and sessionrestore.bak", neither of which are in evidence.
From there, I desperately hoped that typing "about:sessionrestore" into the location bar might yield some sort of belated Valentine's Day miracle, but it did not. I was also alarmed to read that one should not open a new browsing window under these circumstances because it overwrites the old session information files, but I had to do that in order to Google everything and post this.
I am now well beyond the means of my limited computer skills (this is also why I haven't mentioning my operating system; I don... Read more

When I open IE10 after a fresh boot or system restart, I often get the message "Your last browsing session closed unexpectedly", with the choices of opening last session or going to my homepage. But when I select "open the last session" it doesn't open my previous tabs, instead it pops open many separate new windows, all of which go to my homepage. Usually the "Restore previous session" function in the Tools menu is greyed out in all of them at that point so I can't even get my previous tabs back even though that's what the recovery feature was supposed to have done.

When I searched for this problem I discovered it has been going on for at least the past three major versions of IE with many people complaining about it. How can Microsoft allow such a well-known bug to continue to go unfixed for so many years? Anyway, the answer I found on this site which goes all the way back to IE8 suggests disabling Crash Recovery, but believe it or not I want to be able to use crash recovery to restore what I was actually looking at in case of, you know, a crash. Or the more common scenario is not even a crash, I just want to reboot my machine periodically and then restore the tabs I was looking at.

Is there any other way to solve this besides disabling a feature I try to rely on?

Open ie,
Ctrl+Shift+Delete or Alt+TD

This is the message often showing on the bottom of Internet Explorer 9 on someone elses computer.  The user will open Internet Explorer, use it for some time, and close it.  He is done with what he needed; but either when IE is opened again, it will show that message Or IE will open on its own after being closed and will show the message:  Last browsing session closed unexpectedly. Retore?
How do we know what to look for?  How do we know what to investigate?
That computer with IE 9 is with Windows 7, brand is Hewlett-Packard.
Additional information - I do not know if this helps any, but I often use a couple of portable internet browsers on usb flash drive with that same machine and have no problems.

Answer:I.E. 9, Last browsing session closed unexpectedly. Restore?

Try clearing your IE cache files - cookies, history, temp.files.  The unexpected error usually comes from the computer suddenly restarted or shutdown due to power loss or thermal events. Atleast IME, this is how this error comes about so it is somehow normal that the message would ask you to restore the last browsing session. If it comes on every normal bootups, then its kind a different problem you are facing. But try clearing the cache files and check the difference.

Hi, I'm using Win7 SP1 64 bit Home Premium and when I open an IE window after turning on the computer I get a popup saying "Last browsing session closed unexpectedly" with the choices of opening last session or going to homepage. I've chosen both and also clicked on the X to close the popup and it always goes to my homepage.

The reason I'm posting is I always close IE by clicking the X, and then turning the computer off via the start menu, never with the on-off button. It doesn't seem to me like it has closed unexpectedly as in having crashed.

This is a minor annoyance but there is no reason for it to happen when it hasn't crashed, thanks for any topic views and replies.

OK, after a day of looking and searching, I have come here to ask someone.

Brand new XP Pro system. A day old and I'm trying to get things set up. IE 7.0.5730. I want tabbed browsing so I ticked "Enable..." in Tools > Internet Options and restarted IE. I'm used to right clicking on a link and getting offered "Open Link in new Tab" but all I get is "Open Link in New Window" - the old IE6 interface.

I have no -no- add-ons, plugs-in or anything else like special toolbars (ie. Google) loaded. In fact, when I selected Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable - the panel just disappears and I get no response indicating that anything extra is there so it leads me to believe nothing is installed. Again, this system is literally a day old and not much more.

I am able to Cntl-Click and get a tab to open. I am also able to see a blank tab sitting to right and if I click on it it opens to a blank IE page. I tried setting it up so that my home page opens when a new tab is selected but no go. Cntl-T works but no home page only the plain jane blank page. Cntl-Click also opens the selected link in a new tab as does "middle click". So, I'm trying to get the correct context menus. As a side note, I have no selection under Tools for "Pop-Up Blocker On/Off" or "Phishing Filter" either.

Since I'm so used to right-click and pop open in a new tab, I'd like that functionality. I figure this has got to ... Read more

I have problem with session manager's session files.

The problem is:
The submitted storage data from firefox which is put between "storage":{ and its matching closing brace }
But in some of my session files there is non equal { and } under storage's braces.

I need to get storage data but in my case it is very hard to do programmatically because finding "storage":{ 's matching brace is impossible because of the non equal { and } in storage data.

My question: is there any character put before or after { and } like /{ or \{ to avoid confusion?

If there is not such thing, I think there could be different solution but i am not sure:
I look couple of my session files; after "storage":{...} there is ,_"formDataSaved" so i can get storage data in this example ... by looking between "storage":{ and ,"_formDataSaved" easily. Is there every time ,"_formDataSaved" after "storage":{ ?

"storage":{ ... },"_formDataSaved":true
Thank you.

This one is very simple to do.

Anyone using http session can be easily hijacked
Just sniff the http session of a website using wireshark
Note the captured Cookie

open a web browser
Add the name and value of captured cookie. save it.

open the website . Now you are logged into someone else account.

You can do anything on that website , which is allowed to be done without asking for username and password. All this just by using the sniffed cookies.
Anyone can sniff on data traveling through hub, switches, router that you are using to connect to internet. They can easily hijack your http sessions.

it seems firefox cannot tell the difference between a crash, or if you just have the browser open while shutting down/rebooting

apparently this is a bug, but im just curious.. is there anyway for the restore session option to still be available if theres a crash, but for the message to not come up if the browsers open and you shutdown/reboot?

Answer:firefox restore session/start new session

That is a bug that has been entered into the bug report that may or may not be corrected in the future. As it stands now, Firefox can't distinguish between a crash and an unexpected closure.
The only options that I know for now is to type about:config in the address bar of Firefox and hit Enter. Go to browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash and set it to false
This will disable the restore session.
You could try this to disable the message, but it will always be disabled until you remove the preference.
Go into about:config and Right-click in the list and select New> String.
Enter browser.sessionstore.restore_prompt_uri as the pref's name.
Enter javascript:window.close(); as the pref's value.
Close Firefox and the message shouldn't appear. If it doesn't work, just delete the preference.

Good Morning.

I trouble shot an issue with RDP that has me to believe the sollution lies in somthing to do with printer settings in Windows 7.

Affected computer RDP's sucessfully logs into a load ballanced terminal server farm, several moments into the session being established I am getting the "Remote Desktop stopped working" dialog box.

This issue is localized to this single computer and is fixed by unchecking the "pinters" option in the remote desktop settings. this computer acts as a print server to a small laserjet printer, all other computer on this small LAN can successfully print to this printer from their local desktop or while connected to RDP sessions.

I have tried :

Rebuilding RDP desktop icon for user.
New Local machine user accounts.
starting/stopping Print spool services.
USB and LPT1 cables (currently on LPT1).
I'm 2 inches away from backing up this users data and giving them a new computer. It doesn't make any sense. Any wild suggestions are appreciated.

Answer:Printers causing Remote Desktop Session to stop working.

A strange one indeed! A few thoughts and questions...

Is the PC you are remoting into a Win7 machine? If not, what OS? How many other devices (PCs) do you share this printer with? Have you tried looking for an updated print driver?

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me with this irritating frustrating productivity killer.

Basically what happens is that I'm using the browser (Firefox 2 or IE 6, doesn't make any difference) and at some point, sites stop opening - basically the same response as if the net went down - connection error.

Strangely enough, any URL that is in https instead of http, always works. Maybe this can help spot the problem - so I hope.

The only solution usually is to restart the browser and in some extreme cases, I have to reboot the computer.

I have 700+ MB of RAM, and this happens in situations when I have an average amount of open applications, and easily 200 MB of free RAM.

But sometimes, after closing programs that not FF or IE, the browsing also recovers. This makes me wonder if there's anything to do with memory usage. Just a suspicion.

I'm running Avast, Kaspersky Anti-Hacker, Spybot, System Mechanic, Webroot SpySweeper, and in all fronts I seem to be clean from spyware, viruses, etc.

Hey all
I have created a mulisession data CD, but i cant see the files that were written to the first track? If i go into nero, it says the track exists, and it gives me the right size and all of the total file size, but i cant seem to get at these files at all????

Anyone know how i can access them, or why this might be goin on?

Answer:Multi session CD's - why cant i see what i wrote to the first session?

Finalise the CD under Nero. This means you cannot write more to it, but it should populate the TOC and enable you to see all sessions.

First things first, thanks to all who can help.....

I need to programmatically make some adjustments to the Internet Explorer security settings. Most of these settings I have found but there are a few I have not been able to get a clear exact location for in the registry. I will be using a .BAT file to make
the adjustments on 100+ PCs.

Here is what I am looking for.....

Under the "Internet  Properties" found in control panel, under the "Privacy" tab there is an "Advanced" option button. When I click on it I get an "Advance Privacy Settings" options box. On it are several settings.
The first setting, "Override automatic cookie handling" needs to be checked in order to access the other options. I can do that by adjusting the DWord value of "PrivacyAdvanced" under the "Internet Settings" key in the registry,
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet settings", to be specific.

What I have not been able to find are the registry entries for the "First-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, the "Third-party Cookies" "Accept, Block, or Prompt" options, and the "Always allow
session cookies" check box. Please see picture below....

I have seen references to the following settings as being where those options exist, but nothing that explains ... Read more

I tried to clean my registry many times and optomise and defragmented it too. still not working.

Answer:please help. web browsing not working

1) Go to safe mode and try web browsing from there. If you can, it's a good indication you have either problems with Windows or a virus/spyware. 2) Download and update but don't run the scans for MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSypware, and CCleaner. These are all utilities that will help you clean up your system. 3) If that doesn't work, turn off Internet Explorer in the Turn off Windows Features menu, then reboot, then re-enable it and reboot again. 4) Try downloading a different browser from safe mode if you can and re-download IE. 5) When all else fails, backup your stuff and reinstall Windows. If that fails to solve the problem, get a new hard drive for the system and install Windows on it. It's highly unlikely the issue will proceed past this stage.

I've just bought a new Windows 7 computer with IE8 pre-installed. I've enabled tabbed browsing but for some reason it's not working. Each new site I visit simply replaces the previous site on the same single tab - it never creates more than one tab.

In case this is relevant, the full build number is 8.0.7600.16835. The IE8 version I was using on my previous Windows NT computer had been downloaded from the Microsoft site and worked fine as far as tabbed browsing was concerned, so I'm very puzzled.

Any suggestions?

If this happens with different browsers, the common denominator will be your Internet connection. How do you connect? You might benefit from closing the browser in Task Manager rather than restarting the system every time.

So basically my windows Aero theme is not working. I can change to different themes and they change the background and sounds but I cannot change the color of my windows color. When I click on the "Window Color" from the Personalization option in Task Manager it does not give me the regular option to change the window color and transparency. I get a pop-out screen that says "Window Color and Appearance" and changing the color from there does not do anything.

I have read other places and tried to restart the "Themes" option in the Services.exe but that does not help. Both the "Themes" and "Desktop Windows Manager" are started and run from the startup. However when I restart the "Desktop Windows Manager Session Manager" it fixes the problem only for a couple of seconds but reverts back to the broken problem. The color will change to what it's suppose to be but change right back.

I have a AMD Sapphire 7950 video card so I know it supports w/e features Windows has. I have the latest drivers from AMD and everything else works fine but this problem has persisted for a while now. Is this a hardware problem?

This only happens when I startup my computer. If I restart my computer after I see that the problem is there then the problem will be fixed and the Aero Theme is fine.

Please advise on what I can do to fix this problem.

If existing connection continue but you can't establish new ones, I suspect the DNS servers are hiccuping. Perhaps try a different DNS provider. I use Just place their IP numbers in your router.Alternately, reflashing the router's firmware might help.

Hello experts,

I'm having a issue with my Dell XPS 15 (L502X) laptop. When I'm working, surfing, or doing anything normal in the laptop, suddenly at random times, the system crashes, but it doesn't give me inmediatly the BSOD, instead it's like the programs start shutting down (first explorer.exe, I guess because the windows taskbar dissapears), then the browser closes, then my sticky notes stop working, and then PLOP, BSOD with no useful information.

Sometimes when apps are closing, tells me "The requiered data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status 0x.....", that makes me think about HDD problem, but i'm not sure. A virus could be the problem, but i ran a Panda Cloud Scan, and trhow nothing...

Well, thanks in advance for your help, I attached everything is asked for here.

Answer:BSOD Working, Browsing, StandBy, Anything!

Hi Sorro.

Do some Disc checks.
Seatool for dos: SeaTools | Seagate download
Burn it in a blank cd. boot from the CD, click on "Accept", wait for it to finish detecting the drives, then in the upper left corner select "Basic Tests", then select "Long Test" and let it run.
As you have the SATA mode set to AHCI, it is suggested that you switch the mode to IDE/SATA and then perform the test. Because DOS cannot recognize AHCI, and it may not detect any disc to test. When the test is done, boot into BIOS again and set the storrage controller mode back to AHCI again, otherwise windows will refuse to boot.

Let us know the results.

I work at a K-12 school district and we are running a Novell 6.5 environment.

The school registar has not been able to pull up any websites for the last three days. When Internet Explorer or Firefox are opened, it sits at "Connecting to site". It does not matter what site you search for, same thing happens everytime.

I had this problem once before, but I eventually just ghosted the system becuase I never found out how to fix it.

I disabled pop up blockers, windows firewall, reset tcp/ip, but still a no go for browsing.

It isn't the DNS either becuase I can ping the sites just fine. Email and network access work fine.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium and after my computer has been on for a while, it will occasionally be unable to visit "most" websites. Internet will still work as usual, I can play online games, use instant messenger, etc but I just won't be able to visit online sites for some reason.

I am able to visit a few sites but most sites I am unable to visit.

I tried both internet explorer and firefox, so I think it's a problem with my computer rather than the browsers.

To fix the problem, I have to restart my computer. Once my computer is restarted, I'll be able to visit sites again but I want to know what's causing this problem in the first place and if there is a way to fix it without restarting.

Also I ran anti-virus scans and stuff so it shouldn't be a problem with viruses and stuff.

Recently I've been having a problem with the Internet.

I am connected to a wireless WEP network using a TrendNet wireless adapter running Win 7. The Internet will stop working for some unknown reason only on my PC that uses this wireless adapter, but just web browsing stops working. Skype and Torrent still works. On my MacBook the Internet will still work during these periods. What seems to be the problem and how do I fix it?

Answer:Internet Browsing Stops Working Intermittently

Most likely heavy bandwith internet usage from torrent or possible infection. WEP is also an old security encryption, interference is another or a faulty adapter.

I recently bought a new desktop (Dell Intel core i5 2500 processor, 8gb ram, Win7 64bit Pro version). It is set up for automatic updates and I have not tweaked or added anything except Norton anti virus software. I am running IE9 (v9.02).

Yesterday I went to check up in IE9 Browsing History for a site I had visited earlier and found it was only displaying internal sites on my desktop visited. None of the various websites I had visited showed up. I looked back to earlier days and it was the same, nothing except internal searches.

I looked on the web for fixes, and found suggestions to check Internet options to check if it was set to Delete Browsing History when exiting search. It is not. Also to check if I am running In Private Browsing. I am not. And to try a reset of IE9 - I did and it made no difference.

I also have a Samsung Netbook running Windows 7 starter and the same version of IE9 (9.02) also running Norton anti virus and that is working just fine. So is it related to having Win7 64 bit version? Is there a fix?

Answer:IE9 Browsing History not working (using Win7 x64bit) - Help please

The history is located in this folder
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

If there are no browser data, then they are possibly deleted by Ccleaner or similar programs.

So I think some viruses or malware have progressively gotten worse on my computer. When my Mozilla did work, the Google search results were being hijacked maybe 1 in every three times and my computer constantly popped up with 'explorer has stopped working and needs to close' . I restarted my computer last night for the first time in a few weeks and now my Mozilla doesn't even load up and my computer crashes after about 15 minutes of browsing [I am using Chrome for this right now].The GMER scanner resulted in a blue screen both in regular windows and in safe mode, so unfortunately I don't think I can post a log of that scan just quite yet. I am running vista on a thinkpad by the way and use AVG free [updated].
I ran a malwarebytes anti-malware scan for a couple of hours tonight and it found ~10 attacks and deleted them except for "DesktopLayer.exe" which I tried to delete in safemode, but it returned back to the Microsoft Folder in Program Files (where it was originally) after I rebooted my computer.

I got this computer (HP Envy Phoenix 810-201ng), brand new 5 days ago.

While watching videos on facebook or working in photoshop, graphic card is heating a lot (up to 99c) and system crashes with these errors:

I tried removing graphic driver, and installing latest one, but not helped.

Here are minidups if anyone can take a look at them and help me what's the problem:

Here is screenshot of temps while watching youtube video in HD:

I used HP diagnostic tool on boot up, and all tests passed.

Answer:BSOD randomly caused while browsing or working in PS

That is extremely hot. Please manage cooling ASAP!. Try opening the case. Is it free of dust? How's the airflow? Is the GPU itself free of dust?
Could you try placing a table fan aiming directly at the GPU and then see if the system is stable or not? You need to get this overheating issue straightened up before we can test further because this would always interfere with something and probably give us wrong results.
Uninstall Daemon Tools and Western Digital software. I'd suggest removing Kaspersky for the time being using its removal tool: Service articles and using Windows Defender while we are troubleshooting as AVs can cause BSODs.

I have been using IE8 and tabbed browsing since it was released. I have always had this problem. I open a web page, all is well, then I open another, all is well. After some period of time(it varies), my scroll wheel(wired) stops working, and if I go to my desktop and left click on an icon, it opens a box as if I had right clicked on it. I have to right click the icon, then click "open" to get the site to come up. The only way I have found to correct this is to go to desktop, hit Alt-F4, which brings up the "stand by", "turn off computer", "restart" , screen. I then click "cancel", and return to the prior web page, and,,,,scrolling works!,,I can go to desktop, click an icon, and it opens the site as its should......BUT, after a short while of surfing, the same scenario occurs again. I like tabbed browsing, but this is really starting to be a pain. I have looked for info on this problem without success. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Since removing avira, the problem seems to have gone away, as well as a couple of other wierd things.

I clicked the X when it asked if it should load previous session and all my IE8 tabs I had open before the crash was lost.
When I open up IE they doesn't reopen. I've tried "reopen last session" from the Tools menu but with no luck.

Seems like they still are stored in AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Recovery\Active (.dat files) but how do I make IE to open them?

There was a change from IE7 to IE8. Now when you reopen IE, you have to reopen the tabs from your "Favorites" bar. Another good reason to switch to FF.

I have an excel 2000 file (size: 12.5MB). The file is stored on a NT file server. The server is connected on a switch (A). The client PC that tried to access the file is on a BNC cable connection that connects to a 10Mbps hub and this hub connects to another 10Mbps hub and this hub goes to the switch (A). The problem happened when the user tried to update the Excel file. He opened it from the server. He made some modifications to the data and then he pressed the saved button. Excel 2000 begun saving (file.xls) and finally the following error message appeared on screen: "DOCUMENT SAVED SUCESSFULLY. CAN NOT REOPEN THE SAVED DOCUMENT DUE TO LOW MEMORY. PLEASE CLOSE THE DOCUMENT". If I press OK button then the document will be damaged and will not be opened again, so I tried to save it again. I pressed the save option but instead of saving it, I noticed that the SAVE AS dialog box appeared. I thought that something wrong is going on. I saved the Excel file on the SERVER using another filename (file2.xls). The saving process was successful. I closed Excel 2000 and I loaded again. I tried to open the Excel file (file.xls) but the opening failed with the following error message: "FILE file.xls is not in recognizable form ". After that I tried to open the file2.xls and I SUCCEEDED IN OPENING IT WITHOUT PROBLEMS.

If you are using an Exchange Server e-mail account you can cancel pending server requests by clicking Outlook icon in the notifications area and then clicking Cancel Server Request on the shortcut menu"Any help???

Answer:Outlook 2003 won't reopen

I have an Acer aspire 2930 and when I close the lid and then reopen it, it won't fire up again. I have to power down and re-boot to get it to work again. I've checked the power settings and they are set to sleep mode when the lid is shut.
Any assistance would be really appreciated.
Thanks T.

I'm using safe mode w networking at the moment to get onto the net right now, but in normal mode, I open IE and whilst it will initially load my home page with no problem, after a few seconds it will "Recover" or try to recover the tab, and will do this repeatedly until IE freezes. I've run MBAM and it hasn't helped, and I've tried various troubleshooting processes. The internet connection appears to be OK (I'm using wireless, not LAN). Can anyone help with this? It was working fine up until about 2pm this afternoon when I left it in standby for a few hours, but when I picked it up about half 6, I suddenly found IE wasn't working.I'm running IE8, and I'm using an XP Home Edition OS. Can someone help? Thankyou!

I'm running Windows Vista on a Dell XPS410. When I close Internet Explorer or Microsoft Outlook, I often (but not always) get a message "Internet Explorer (or Microsoft Outlook) has stopped working" and then the program will reopen by itself. As Outlook reopens, I get a message that it was not closed properly and it's checking for errors, and lately I'm also asked if I want to reopen in Safe Mode. Occasionally I'll get a message that IE has stopped working even when I don't close it myself, and all pages will close.

Not sure if this is a related problem or not, but occasionally I have emails that stay in the outbox even after sending (and stay open on the monitor after I hit "send"), but they also show up in the Sent box, so it's difficult to know if they actually were sent. I believe (but I'm not sure) that it's only happening when they have multiple photos attached, so they are large emails and I'm sending them on a 28.8k dialup modem, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any help!

Can anybody get me in contact with Acer? I want to reopen my support case because my laptop is starting to die again, even after they "fixed" it.
Because my warranty is supposedly a week out of date I am unable to get in contact with a single person from Acer to tell them to reopen [edited for privacy] because their support clearly did not solve the problem. I am experiencing the exact same problem that led to my needing to send in my laptop. It is worsening and probably going to lead to a huge nasty crash again.
And I have reason to believe that the cause is bad hardware that my Acer Aspire Nitro was shipped with, because THIS time, when I saw the BSODs, I looked them up. I've been receiving a "Kernel Data Inpage Error" which apparently means that my memory or my hard drive is faulty. (And yes, I did the recommended things on that page. Nothing has helped or identified a problem. At all.)
This issue SHOULD be covered under warranty, not only because it is an issue that started during the year of warranty, but ALSO because Acer claimed to have fixed the issue but DID NOT, and ALSO because their warranty clearly states "Acer warrants that its Products will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the Limited Warranty Period" and my computer CLEARLY CAME WITH FAULTY HARDWARE.
My SNID is [edited for privacy]. My case is and was [edited for privacy]and I believe I have the right to continued Acer support in this ma... Read more

Answer:I need to reopen an issue with acer

Hi lsilich04,
We have to have some date for the warranty to end, but we certainly aren't interested in leaving you out in the cold less than a week out. I was able to locate your information and the US service team updated the warranty through the end of the month. This will allow you to contact and setup services as needed.
In reading your post, I would have to disagree that a kernel error means a hardware error. The Kernel is part of the core of the Windows operating system and is completely software, when that crashes, it would result in the bluescreens and lockups. When your unit was in originally, I show that memory tests and hard drive tests were done, and a reload of the operating system corrected the issue. Now, after 3 months, you're starting to experience blue screens again, and I would suspect that some corruption has occured in the operating system. With all of this said, I would suggest attempting a recovery first, see how the system behaves. If there was a hardware error, it would also fail during the recovery process.

Hello Mark, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you meant that you "closed" your Microsoft account as in to deactivate it like in the tutorial below, then no worries. You can reactivate your Microsoft account by signing in it again online at Microsoft within 365 days of closing it.

we tried different versions, and they all work on all computers except one that is nearly identical with the one I use. I love Firefox, and I want it to work on that PC, too, because it rocks and it's safer.

It's hard to describe. Where the menus are supposed to be, the menu titles are plain text without interactivity, some letters are underlined. Nothing to click.
The main window is just grey.
That's about all there is, and nothing to click or do.
We uninstalled and reinstalled it multiple times without success.

Here's a screenshot:

Any ideas what I can do?

I have an IBM Thinkpad t30 2366 with a Cisco Systems PCI Wireless LAN Adapter. I usually never have any issues with the wireless internet but lately everytime I go to my usual hotspots, I'm unable to browse. The wireless network icon in my tray says I get an excellent signal (I also don't get the limited or no connectivity balloon) but when I try to browse I get nothing but blank pages, that's to say, not even the "problem loading page" screen, just blank. The status bar indicates no loading going on (not filling up at all) and quickly indicates "done." all this happens only when I try to use wifi, wired browsing still works fine. I'm using firefox on windows XP SP3. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: wifi not working, wired browsing works

When you're connected to one of these hotspots, please do this.
Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

This is consistent since the last 2 weeks ... i cant think of anything I might have changed or installed that would be causing this.

Basically from the time Windows starts up (ie all the startup programs finish loading) I have 10 mins or less to browse the net, then all my web browsing comes to a sudden halt, both in IE and netscape.

However, even though my web browsing is not working, all my chat programs (msn, eyeballchat, yahoo) and email still work just fine.

I'm using Win98SE and connecting to the net via ethernet and Netgear Firewall/Router and Adsl modem.

Any ideas on what might be going on?

Answer:Web browsing stops working 10 mins after starting windows

normal reason is your firewall is incorrectly set & blocking your dhcp renewal or dhcp return on port 67

I am using a Vista 32-bit. This usually happens when i am browsing on the web or have multiple programs up. It's only happened in the past 2 weeks, and usually I follow the same routine each time, only to have it fail.

So I am usually just sitting back reading a page (Or screwing around with some programs), then all of a sudden, out of the blue, the page (Or Program) stops responding. I can't open task manager, and I cant open any new program (any program that is sitting on the taskbar can't be opened). I can move my mouse around, and right click here and their, but usually after a while it completely freezes. I try to shut down my computer via the start menu, nope.

I press the Shutdown button to have my computer shut down ( You know, safely, not the forcible way) and that doesnt work ( occasionally it eventually works, but then it just sits on "logging off" for hours on end), so I have to forcibly restart my computer when this problem occurs.

It has gotten so bad that i am forced to use another computer to research and write up posts (like this one) because I just cant work for more than around 30 minutes ( it happens more often at night, dont ask me why).

It could be a virus, but I cant ever scan my computer since my computer just dies so fast. Still I do think I should have found it when I did my scans when this problem didnt occur so frequently, So I think I can eliminate that as a possibility (I am using AVG-Free, if that helps)

It is fa... Read more

Hello everyone,

I have spent a lot of time looking for the solution to the problem quoted in the topic title and I know that some of you experience the same. As it appears in a couple of threads it makes it hard to post a response in each of them, so I will create a new one.
The problem usually occurs on computers running p2p programs or other software that creates many connections. The problem is a bug in ICS (internet connection sharing), you can read a discussion here :
Vista RTM can't open new socket. - MSDN Forums

If you don't want to read the whole discussion, you can just check this link containing the solution :
After you configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows Vista, the network connection stops working after one-to-two hours

Hope it helps

I have a compaq presario. Im using Win 7. Ive been able to hibernate all this time. Now all of a sudden I cant hibernate. At first I thought it had to do with my battery. Since it had gone dead. I had thought it needed battery to go to hibernate and not lose its files. Then I was really disapointed when I got a new battery and it still didnt hibernate. I have to wonder if its the memory. If its because I have such low memory on my hard drive and its memory needs a certain amount of space. Ive looked up this issue online and havent seen anyone find any solution. Ive also played around with the options. I can put it into sleep but thats about it. I understand most people say who cares just put it to sleep. But Im one of those that if it has the option it should work. Plus is not the same thing. Ive also tried sleep hibernate and it wont hibernate. It does the same the same thing as in hibernate. It turns the screen off though the computer stays on. While the computer is on its on the user login option. Im sure its something trivial. I dont know how who makes pc's and we have to constantly being going around such bugs like these. I suppose thats why we have to constantly buy new ones for its actualization.

Answer:Hibernate option not working

Things that you've done recently such as flashing the bios or updating Windows are likely culprits. Try a System Restore to a date prior to the problem.

I have Windows 7 Ultimate on a Sony laptop computer.

All of a sudden (may have been after the recent Windows Update), my computer will not turn off the display. I have the screen saver set to 10 minutes and the screen off after 20 minutes. The screen saver comes on appropriately, but the screen does not go off anymore.

It used to work just fine.

I have changed the timer settings to see if it made a difference, but it did not.

Any suggestions on how to get this working again?

Try a System Restore to before the last Update. If that fixes it then you need to install the updates a few at a time until you find the one causing the problem.

Sometimes the video cards have a driver utility that takes control over these options generally there is a tool to be found to access these features. Is this an ATI or nVidia video card or some other card to point you to the utility that might be present?I have systems with both ATI (AMD) Radeon Video Cards as well as nVidia GeForce Video Cards and they each have a utility installed to configure dual displays and fine tune features.
