Viewing thumbnails as images but without .thumbs file

Question: Viewing thumbnails as images but without .thumbs file

I know that if in Folder Options I choose "Always show icons, never thumbnails' the '.thumbs' file stops being created everytime you view an image file in Explorer. But I do want to see thumbnails, or more specifically I like the idea of viewing the image of the *.jpg, *.dng etc. when in Explorer. However, what I don't like is getting a '.thumbs' file being created.
I'm sure it is possible to have one without the other but can't recall how to do so.
Thank you

Preferred Solution: Viewing thumbnails as images but without .thumbs file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Viewing thumbnails as images but without .thumbs file

In Windows Explorer [Win7 and earlier] go to Organize, Folder and Search Options, View tab and the first item Files and Folders and uncheck the first thing about Always show icons, never thumbnails. At least that is what works with my Win7 Ult. But then I use the Extra Large Icons view for pictures and don't get the .thumbs part.

I'm trying to view Jpeg images for folders that contain my MP3 albums. I want to be able to view the album covers rather than the default folder picture. I'm running on windows 2000 and have re- named the Jpeg image to "folder" (without speechmarks) and then selected thumbnails on the view bar but to no avail. I think its an XP thing which does not allow you to do this on 2000. Can anyone help?

Hello all,
I have what I consider to be a rather unique situation. I have recently been trying to restore an old, uncropped version of a file from about 10 years and about 3 computers ago, naturally impossible under general circumstances. However, the thumbnail for the file still shows the original version, while opening the image in windows media viewer or ms paint reveals that the file in fact contains the new version.

My query was since the thumbnail seems to be saving the original non-cropped version, has it kept a copy of the old file? If so, can the old version be opened so I can view it? I lack information about thumbnails to know whether this is possible or impossible.

Thanks for any assistance.

Answer:Viewing source file for thumbnails.

You would need a copy of the original file. A thumbnail is just a smaller version and does not contain this file. The best you could do is resize the image to whatever size is needed but the quality of the image would suffer.

Previously this was just a minor annoyance but now I need a fix. In many of my folders I am missing file names for my files when they're viewed in Thumbnail mode. I have no idea what's causing this to happen, and I've looked everywhere I can think of for a fix.

Can anyone point me to a solution?

I guess I'm not able to delete my thread so I'll edit to post the solution instead. It's a result from holding shift while opening a folder in Thumbnail mode. To correct the missing file names I simply had to hold shift while opening the folder for a second time. Annoying.

Hi...

I'm an new user to Photoshop CS(Windows) ... I find that in the file browser (I'm looking at RAW images) ... SOME images do not have thumbnails desplayed ... only a generic ICON ... this is maybe 15% of the images...

.... if I select one of these images I can see it in the preview window, and I can open it into Photoshop (via the Camera Raw plug-in) ... but I can't see a thumbnail in the main browsing window ...

... this makes it very difficult to select images for further editing...

... if you know how to correct this problem, or know what the cause might be, please let me know.

Thanks, Peubear

Don't have your answer but...

Are these all from the same camera/card?

The only thing that happened to me was viewing Nikon RAW/NEC files they would show generic in the browser window but not show in the preview window until I added the NEC plugin to CS

this is a weird one... but then, this is me we're talking about here.

So I basically have a folder full of 'junk' -- image macros, various photos, etc... downloaded from the web, or received from contacts, basically everything that cluttered up my desktop at one point but never had the time to do anything but dump it in the folder when it came time to clean it up.

The folder is maybe 95% images... 5000 or so images in all. And yes, I know Windows doesn't like that many in one place, which is part of the reason I'm trying to deal with it now.

I'm trying to select groups of images and either delete or sort them into various other folders on my PC based on content, etc... the problem is that I can't see what 4/5 of them are without opening them in picture and fax viewer.

Let's back up a little here...

Initially, I had them all showing at the standard thumbnail view, and everything appeared fine... problem was, they were too small to really make a judgment on their contents for effective sorting at a glance... so I used tweak UI and set the thumbnail size to 256. Again, everything appeared fine, and I went on like this for a while... until explorer crashed.
At that point I figured it would be a good time to turn the thumbnail sizes back down to somewhere in the middle, so they didn't take up so much screen space, and hopefully wouldn't crash explorer again. I set them to 192, and suddenly, everything ground to a halt.

What I get now is that only 1 in 5 image ... Read more

I do not even know what to ask for, ie, I don't know what these programs are called. What I am looking for is a program that will take all the thumb nails on a page, and download the full size images that they are linked too. Hopefully this program would work for all pages. And oh yeah, it'd be real nice if had no malware and was braindead easy to operate. This is the best place on the web to ask so I thought that I would ask here.

Question: Viewing Thumbnails

How do I enable the Thumbnail View for Folders in Windows Explorer for Windows 2000. When I try to enable it, I cant see pictures.

Answer:Viewing Thumbnails

You question is kind of a contradiction. Are you trying to view pictures? Th following views are available and the choice is made by clicking on the one you want using the views icon to the right of the folders icon:
Thumbnails
Tiles
Icons
List
Details

Pictures are usually seen in the Thumbnail view.

You must click on the section in the explorer tree first. Once done, click on the views icon to see the files that have opened on the right screen in the view of your choice.

NOTE: this is not the word VIEW on the Toolbar. It's a square icon with tiny circles to the right of the folder icon.

In Win 2000, you can see a representation of a web page using View > Thumbnail in windows explorer. In XP, you can't, apparently by design (Windows support article 327833). Is there any way to switch this option on, or, perhaps more likely, a windows explorer replacement that gives you this feature?thanks, C

Probably a security measure. You could try the MS instructions but substitute regsvr32 /u to un-register the dll in question, though I'm not recommending it. I don't know of any other software that will produce a thumbnail of HTML pages.

Can someone provide me with a step by step in modifying the registry to show flv thumbnails just as I am able to see mpeg and avi and wmv files.

I have some instructions but I didn't quite understand it all on how/what to modify. I will include such info as I have ...need some experienced help for a newbie ! Thank you.

But here is how you can make your videos in extensions like flv and 3gp to show thumbnail preview in the Windows Explorer just like the avi and wmv files.

1. The following trick needs registry tweaking so you can either backup your registry or delete the key that you are just going to create.

2. Open a notepad and copy and paste the following code as it is.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@=?{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}?

3. Remember you need to copy the entire code and then save the file with any name but with .reg extension say abc.reg (If this don?t work then paste Windows
Registry Editor Version 5.00 before REGEDIT4 and try again)

4. Double click this newly created file and click on yes afterwards.

5. Congratulations, flv video files will show a thumbnail preview in the explorer.

Note:

Similarly, you can make the other video files like .3gp, .mp4, .mov or .vob to show thumbnail preview in the explorer. For that you just need to replace .flv with the extension you are making

Example:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-... Read more

Answer:Viewing flv thumbnails in explorer WinXp

I remember my first time doing something like this. I asked the same question you have since I was afraid I'd brake my computer.

Click start, click run, type notepad and click ok.

Copy and paste the following text into the new window, just like you would with Word or any other text editing program:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@=”{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}”

Make sure there are no extra spaces before REGEDIT4 or after 590}"

Save the file to your Desktop as (something).reg and double click the new file that's been created. Windows should ask you if you'd like to import it into your registry. Click yes and reboot to finish.

Sometimes, the file will open in Notepad instead of being imported. This rarely happens but it's not hard to fix. Just post here again if it does and I'll walk you through fixing it.

Hi, I mainly use my computer for photo editing and web browsing, I've got 1000's of photos that I'm constantly viewing and working with.

I've noticed that when I increase the thumbnails of the photos I'm viewing to the largest size that it can go the picture quality deteriorates, it becomes slightly blurry, it looks as though its being interpolated and not displaying the actual photo.

When I decrease the thumbnail size halfway it becomes shaper but when I increase it again it just looks as though it's simply interpolating the image.

The issue is that I like to display my thumbnails at the largest size and it's frustrating to see a decrease in the picture quality, I dont notice it in the photo gallery.

My monitor is an Nec 2490, I've got the dpi setting at 120 dpi, I've noticed that when I have the computer set to 144 dpi I dont notice the decrease in picture quality when viewing the large thumbnails.

Should I keep my computer set to 144 dpi? I currently have it at 120 dpi Does anyone notice the decrease in picture quality as well? any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks, Stu.

Answer:Degraded picture quality when viewing large thumbnails

I think Windows use embedded thumbnails to view pictures. Generally JPEG from digital cameras will have such thumbnails, and rather than read the whole multi-megabyte file, Windows will just grab the thumbnail at the start. They're not particularly large, and probably won't even fit the space in "extra large icon" in view. Note that the view menu only has preset sizes (large, extra large, and medium) for thumbnails. In XP, you could set thumbnails size using TweakUI. Since TweakUI isn't available to Vista, you can try setting that setting manually in the registry, but I wouldn't know what key is involved.

Since you work with pics a lot, may I suggest, using xnview (freeware) for image browsing? It has a LOT of options you can customize, including thumbnail size (try sticking to high quality thumbnails). Some people will also suggest IrFanView, but I haven't had a chance to play with it.

Answer:Degraded picture quality when viewing large thumbnails

my guess is the thumbnails are a set size, so resizing the thumbnail near its native size will look sharper than when you make it larger than its native size. and the actually display size (Small/ Medium etc..) in explorer is just a zoom feature.

Anyone know the relationship between an image file and its thumbnail ? I'd assumed that the file was read and the thumbnail dynamically created when I select to view with Thumbnail or Slideshow option. The point being that I have a file which only about 5% of the image shows in the thumbnail but the image file is intact and can be fully 'previewed' or viewed. Any ideas ? N.B. it is almost 47mb in size but I have others larger than that which don't exhibit this 'problem'. More of a nusiance than anything but curious to understand. Have refreshed the image file from another source (CD) but still the same. Thumbnail of CD is ok.

It doesn't happen with all images ,but it happens pretty often.

Files affected: images - downloaded or saved on the desktop by various programs such as adobe photoshop ,photomatix HDR generated image ,mainly big image files like over 1MB.

I tried the disk cleanup thumbnail cache ,it worked recovering the unfinished thumbnails ,but it still happens again.

It seems that everytime I enter folders with a large amount of images it needs to reload the thumbnails which can take a while. If I let them all load then come back the thumbnails will be loaded. But if I go back in a few days the same loading will happen. Nevertheless if I go to a totally new image folder I'll have to load the thumbnails again.

Is there somehow a way or a program to scan my pc "autogenerate" the thumbnails of all images it finds and cache them? So that when I view a folder it will load all the thumbnails instantly? Thanks

Just within the past week or so, when viewing pics in windows explorer, only some of the thumbnails will show the image they are representing. Some won't. I tried rebuilding the library and doing Disk Cleanup to delete them so they'd rebuild; I've checked/unchecked the "show icons not thumbs" to see if that would kick it into showing it. Nothing has helped.
Also, maybe related, when opening up any Windows explorer window, the green bar at the top is very slow to load all the way to the right, sometimes never getting to the other side.

In explorer under view/options under View "Always show icons never thumbnails" is unchecked.
I also tried to choose "Restore Defaults" from there as well with no luck. Yes, I closed and re-opened
explorer after the change.

I under went under Control Panel/System/Advanced/System Properties/Performance and
made sure "Save Taskbar Thumbnail Previews" was checked as well as "Show thumbnails instead of icons"
was also checked.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Any help appreciated. Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

Just upgraded to a PC with Windows 7. When I run Windows explorer, I can no longer see my images and movies as thumbnails, when in icon view. They stay as icons. This happens whatever program I associate with the images/movies. I never had a problem in XP or Vista. I have looked through Windows help, but can't find any info on this. Can anyone advise how to get thumbnails displayed, so I can browse my images properly?

Answer:Win explorer does not display images as thumbnails

You have selected "medium icons" in the "view menu?

A while ago I turned off something in Windows because of weird issues happening... and I think its related to something I noticed today. In old pictures folders I no longer see thumbnails. I just see a white sheet of paper icon (well it looks like that) and the filename underneath.

How do I restore thumbnail generation within a folder and its subfolders? I've already set it to Pictures type...

Answer:How do I generate thumbnails for images in old folders?

Hmm, a reboot solved most of the folders...
but not all.
maybe another reboot will finish the job?

I've just purchased a computer and have just put all of my files onto said computer using Windows 7. After doing so I have noticed that some of the images don't appear to have a thumbnail and are just a black image and when I go to click on the majority
of pictures I am met with the same black image. I can now no longer see my pictures which is really frustrating seeing as I have over 16,000 of them and really need a solution to this if anyone is available to help? Many Thanks

Answer:Images and thumbnails showing up as a being black

Hi,
According to your description, it is seems like these pictures thumbnail weren't copied from original computer.
You can enable new system thumbnail for test:
Open Folder Options, then check Display file icon on thumbnails.

This has been bugging me for a while!

Very often when I open a folder to view its contents and choose a thumbnail display ( as opposed to list, details or tiles ) then the folder icons are emblazoned with .jpg images seemingly chosen at random from the images on my hard drive. ( Actually it might not be entirely random, the images displayed are often those I've viewed or edited recently )

It's a pain in the pudenda because after I have chosen an appropriate image to identify the contents of a folder ( say a picture of the Eiffel Tower to denote that the folder is full of pictures of Paris ) the next time I open My Pictures ( or wherever the folder is stored ) I get a random image ( say, a Peruvian llama )

Doesn't only affect picture folders and it even affects the folders that don't allow customisation ( ie those that have no 'Customise' tab in 'Properties' )

I have tried deleting one image that was appearing frequently from My Pictures but it still appears on the folder.

Am I missing a trick with the "Remember each folder's Settings.." stuff? should I be messing with "thumbs.db" ?

I really don't want to lose the work I've put in choosing pictures for the folders that are correctly adorned so a "Global/Nuclear" option would be a real last resort!

I'm using a hp desktop computer running Windows XP SP2

Answer:Folder thumbnails display random images

Hi

sadly XP will only remember a set number of folder customisations by default, this causes the exact issue your seeing now with random changes to certain folders images, you can however get around this by increasing the amount of folders that XP remembers, Download Powertoys for XP and install the TweakUI component.

Once installed and run click, Explorer then Customizations and change the default value to something like 5000 ( more if you have alot of folders ) > Apply

Also on the desktop. files < 10mb generates perfect images. It doesn't matter what format it is, tiff, jpg.
I think there is changed a value in the registry file of windows.
Who can help me to solve this annoying problem?

Hi, I'm using Windows 8.1 x64.

In the MUSIC folder I have 1 folder for each artist. In each Artist folder I have 1 folder for each Album. And in each Album folder I have all the songs, with the cover art embedded in them, in every single .mp3 I have.

In folder options I've set folders to show thumbnails, not icon. So, each Album folder's icon is the album art of the .mp3 files it has inside. BUT in the MUSIC folder, all the Artist folders don't show the album arts they have inside. Their icon is not a folder's icon neither, it's like thumbnails of folders:
And I'd like them to show the thumbnails of the albums they have inside. Well, the maximum amount of images that a folder icon can show is 2, so if I have more than 1 album in an Artist folder, then the icon should be 2 random thumbnails (of 2 albums).

An example here:

I put a song (with embedded cover art) in the desktop. The archive's icon is the cover art.

Now I create a NEW FOLDER (the icon is a default folder icon) called "Album". I put there the .mp3 file. Now, the "Album" folder's icon is the cover art of the .mp3 file.

Then I create ANOTHER new folder called "Artist" (default folder icon), and I put there the "Album" folder. And here, the "Artist" folder's icon is NOT the cover art, but the icon of the image above, and I want it to show the cover art.

Notice that all album's folders have only .mp3 files, not hidden images like "folder.jpg" or anyth... Read more

Hi there?

How can I do this, that a "Mother" folder's icon shows cover arts embedded in the "Son" folder's icon?

-Folder A (rare folder's icon, image in the first post) contains:
--Folder B (folder's icon is the cover art of the files it has) contains:
---mp3 files with embedded cover art

I want A folder's icon to be the same as B's.

I recently upgraded from Photoshop 6 to CS and have noticed that my saved files are no longer represented by the photoshop icon and a minature version of the image. When I right click on any of the files and check properties they are still listed as opening with Photoshop. This is reall annoying as I have to open the files now before I can see what they are where as before I could tell from the minature image.Anybody any idea how to sort this? Thanks

Answer:Photoshop thumbnails not visible as small images

I can't remember back to PS 6, so I'm not sure what I did those days, but what is wrong with using the "File Browser" within CS. This shows thunbnails of all the images in any given folder on any given drive.

Vista Home Premium SP2. When browsing folders of digital photos, Explorer will load up all of the thumbnails, and as soon as it has the last one loaded, 95% of the photos will revert to the default icon and I'll end up with thumbnail views of only 2 or 3 images out of 75 or 80. If I change the thumbnail size, it'll "rescan" the folder, load all thumbs, and then revert 95% random ones back to the default icon. This makes it nearly impossible to organize my photos and is VERY annoying and problematic!

Answer:Explorer only displays random thumbnails of images

hello
have you tried going to control panel (classic view) > folder options > View tab make sure. always show icons, never thumbnails. dont have a check in it. click apply.

My question is whether or not reinstalling Windows ME will solve my pictures problem, and will such a download of Windows ME include the Kodak program, Paint, and Image Preview associated with Windows ME???
BACKGROUND -- I recently did a few things that brought about a problem. I used Ultra WinCleaner 2002 which deleted many Registry entries, etc., and messed up McAfee Security which had to be reinstalled. I downloaded a PSP program but didn't complete the installation (the program was an upgrade to PSP 7.0, but I didn't have a PSP Program). After these two operations, I found that when I tried with pictures to SAVE AS .bmp the saved file was in an unknown format... thumnails and ImagePreview did not work. File Properties said the files were JPG , but the format was unknown to ImagePreview. Thinking the Kodak program that comes with Windows ME was messed up, I downloaded an Image Viewer called IrfanView and set extensions for all images to use IrfanView. IrfanView worked well , but the SAVE AS problem still existed. I cleared all the extentions from IrfanView and deleted IrfanView. Now the problem is worse and none of my pictures will open in ImagePreview at all, and I virtually can not save any pictures. Is reinstalling Windows ME a good solution and will it not delete documents, pictures, and applications?

Hi,

Whilst on holiday, I accidently wiped all the images from my digital camera's memory card (not overly clever I admit!). When I got home I sent the card to a data recovery specialist who restored the images from the card to a DVD and sent it to me.

When I load the DVD and navigate to the pictures on my computer, however, the initial thumnails for the pictures load showing all of the details of the photo, but then seem to automatically refresh a second later, this time showing big grey-ed out areas in the photos. If I then open the images, the grey areas also appear.

It sounds a bit weird I know. But it seems that the data for the whole picture may be there given that the thumbnail initially shows the whole picture. Am I being too optimistic or is there a chance I can recover the whole of the pictures still?

Many thanks for any help anyone is able to provide.

Cheers,

David

Hi there.

I was hoping someone on here might be able to help me with a problem i'm having.

Basically, I have a lot of images that I want to burn on to dvd to view on my tv through the dvd player.

The images look fine on the pc, and when i burn them to the disc, if i view them from the disc, they look fine on the pc, but if i view them from the dvd player through the tv, they look out of focus.

I have used ulead and photoshop to burn the dvds, and have burn at x4 and x48.

I have used this dvd writer before to burn images with no problems, but since i have reinstalled xp and installed all the programs again, it doesn't seem to be any good.

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Craig

Answer:viewing images from dvd on tv

Hey Craig,

The 'bluryness' could be cause by a few reasons.

1. The resolution of the images
2. The size of your tv and it's resolution
3. The Disk you're burning it on

You say you've done this before. Have you tried the older disks on the same player/tv? Do they look alright?

Question: Viewing GIF images

When I got my computer I was able to view all gif images and animations through internet explorer. Then I downloaded a program to make gifs. The program has since expired. The problem is that when I try to open a gif through the desktop OR windows explorer, it tries to open the file through the expired program. How do I change the default program for viewing these gifs?

brian

Answer:Viewing GIF images

Start Windows Explorer. Navigate to any .gif file. Single left click on it to highlight it. Now press and hold the shift key. Right click on the .gif file and select "Open With". Scroll down and select Iexpore to open it with. Make sure to check off the box at the bottom that reads "Always use this program to open this file type" and click on Ok. That will reassociate All of the .gifs to use IE.

My PC running Vista Home Premium 32-bit had the Google re-direct virus which made my desktop wallpaper blank.

I have removed it, but I cannot change the wallpaper through Control Panel > Personalization > Desktop Background; when I look at the wallpapers stored in Windows Wallpapers, I see the file names but no thumbnails.

I have the same exact problem in my Pictures directory, none of my pictures' thumbnails show. How do I fix this?

The pictures load normally if I double click on them, I can start slideshows, etc., but they are not displaying correctly in explorer.

Answer:What is Thumbs.db file?

Briefly, it's the data for displaying a thumbnail view of the graphic file involved. If you don't want to use the thumbnail view utility, you can disable it and you'll not be bothered with these things again.

Hello all,

Today I was reviewing some pictures of mine (all of which are JPG) and noticed that the ones that have some standard indexed file name (such as a digital camera would save them as) were unviewable.  The files that I had renamed myself at some point were intact, but the files with names like 100_####.jpg or DSCN#### will not open in Paint, Paint.net, or anything...on MY computer.  I sent two files to a friend; one that I could see, and one that I couldn't.  He was able to see the 100_#### file that I was unable to see.  He recommended trying Malwarebytes - which I did, and nothing changed.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Answer:Problem with viewing JPG images

I'd interpret that as possible file corruption...which may be an indicator of hard drive problems.

Is that the only problem with your system right now?  Any other odd circumstances?

Hello all,

I have the newest version of IE thats available. I am running a Dell laptop, windows XP, 1.7 celeron M processor with 512 on the memory.

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask this but here I go.

I am on alot of online RPGs and messageboards. Ive had this laptop since the beginning of this year and In this time I have found that I cannot view very many message board banners. It seems to be only the very simple very low file sized images that I can see. I was wondering if there is any chance of fixing this? I assume it might have something to do with cache or memory assigned to images or anything. I would be really greatful for any help on this subject. Thanks alot

It is most likely a security setting in the browser that you can check out by going to internet options. Restore everything back to defaults. If it is not that then it is a third party security on the pc like your anitvirus program or firewall.

When I use 'Windows Photo Gallery' to view files like .jpg's, the time it takes for images to load when I want to view them quickly is kinda slow. The images take nearly a split second or so to load when I am trying to go through a bunch of pictures. I was wondering if there was anyway to make it so that images load instantaniously when I click the 'next' button or press the 'right' key on my keyboard, perhaps changing some hidden settings or something. I have practically no background processes running (Sidebar disabled, Windows Defender disabled. I only have Nod32 running in the background, but that takes close to no system resources to run).
I have a pretty fast computer:
---------------------------------
Running: Vista Ultimate x64
E6600 OC@ 3.375 GHz
4GB RAM
2x 8800 GTS's SLI'ed
The images DO load fast, but I want them to load instantly.

And a second question:
Do any of you know of a way to play .gif animations in 'Windows Photo Gallery'? I can play them fine in IE, but unlike XP where I could just browse through a bunch of .gifs, Vista has to pop up a new browser for each image. I have third party software for viewing .gifs, but I wanted to use an extremely basic program such as 'Windows Photo Gallery', something like XP's 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer'.

Any help appreciated.

How can I make it so that double clicking will open the image?

Answer:(Solved) Viewing images

Right-click a jpg while holding down the Shift key and select Open With
In the Open With window, select the program you want to associate with jpg's and make sure you put a tick in the box that says "Always open this type of file with this program"
That should do it. However, I have noticed, specifically with MGI Photosuite, that it keeps recapturing the associations, so I uninstalled that program, then there were no problems.

I use to be able to receive e-mails in outlook 2000 where I could view everything including images or links. Lately I can see only text and where the pictures should be there is only a frame with a little icon in it. What setting has changed?Ria

Answer:Viewing images in outlook

Tools/Options, E-mail options and check that the box to read all mail in plain text is not ticked. That's for Outlook 2003 - should be similar for 2000.

I've just installed Thunderbird after having countless problems with Outlook. I'm pleased with it so far but I do miss the ability to view an email the way it was sent. How do I turn plain text off so that I can see images in emails from Ebay, AMG Music etc.BTW. I've already tried VIEW > MESSSAGE BODY AS > HTML, SIMPLE HTML and PLAIN TEXT and that didn't work.

Answer:Viewing images in Thunderbird

Message body as Original HTML is the setting for seeing it as you want.As far as I'm aware this is all there is - my messages display as HTML with that setting. Are these new messages, or imported ones, or both?

I've just tried looking at some JPEG images on my new Sony HXD995 recorder. The pictures are not sharp, the colour is a bit iffy and there is a slight judder. The quality is nothing like as good as on my desktop which is pin sharp with a good colour likeness. What I'm wondering is whether the problem is my old cathode ray Sony 28 inch TV which seems OK for normal use, or whether I can't expect a decent image via a TV.If the latter, I shall have to invest sometime in a laptop which seems a better bet than continually printing photos and spending a fortune in paper and ink. Any recommendations in a cheap 15.4 laptop with a decent screen, please. I'm not into games but it also might be useful on a boat for navigation.

Answer:Viewing JPEG images

I suspect the problem is to do with the way the (number of) pixels that make up the jpeg image are mapped [e.g. extrapolated (= stretched) / interpolated (= compressed)] to fit your TV screen.

There is a way to visualize images opened as thumbnails directly in the taskbar without the need to put the cursor over them?

Answer:How can I visualize images opened as thumbnails directly on the taskbar without needing to put the cursor over them?

I'm not aware of any way to do this...
Your taskbar would start taking up too much space with just a few programs open.

I see numerous occurrences of a small file called thumbs.db popping up in several folders on my hard drive. Occasionally I want to erase everything in such a folder and delete the entire folder, just for the sake of tidiness, but I can never delete the thumbs.db file. I always get some very long cryptic message so I just give up and leave it and the otherwise empty folder alone.

That's never been a problem, but I'm curious what it is.

I want to delete 20 folders containing images. Whe I try to delete more than one folder, I keep getting a Thumbs file. when I skip it, it returns for each folder.
If I delete a single folder, it gets deleted OK.
Here is a screen shot of the message I get.
What is it and how can I get rid of it?

Answer:Can't delete Thumbs file

This appears to be the result of the source machine the files were copied from.
My guess is it has tagged all the thumbnail files as system thus protecting them.

I would also check the folder properties (by right clicking it) and make sure read only isn't set.
It would seem the problem is just that the files are from another computer or a previous format of the one you are using.
You could also try just switching view to details instead of icons.
Sometimes it keeps trying to create new thumbnail files for the folders simply because of the view type.

Good morning all.
First of all, forgive me if I seem ignorant about the Windows Operating Systems. I am an Apple guy and rarely boot up a Windows Computer.

Anyway, I have been given the task of recovering some mIrc data from a hard drive. One of the files that is important for me to find is called the Thumbs.db. I have searched the hard drive for it and am unable to find it.

If possible, I would also like to know exactly what this file consists of.

Can someone with some real Windows expertiese help me with this?

Thanks for any and all help.

Olifer.

Answer:Location of Thumbs.db file

The file containes cached image previews for thumbnails shown in folders as far as I know. You have to unhide hidden files first. Start>settings>control panel>folder option.
Every folder that you configured to show thumbnails contains this file. The file stays in the folder if you disable thumbnail preview.

I know what they are (and how to switch them off) but how do I search for them? The Search in XP Explorer even with all the Advanced settings on, doesn't see them. This is a problem with ECDL classes where the students have to count files in a folder. Their answer is wrong because of thumbs.db appearing.

Answer:How do I find thumbs.db file?

open a command window and run C:\del /s /q Thumbs.dbthat will delete them..you can stop Thumbs.db from breeding any more: from the Folder Options dialog, simply tick "Do not cache thumbnails.

I have a folder that used to store 4 or 5 mp3 files and now i want to delete the folder and cannot. every time i go to delete the folder it says: You Need Permission to Perform this Actionwhat can i do?

Answer:cannot delete THUMBS.DB file

Well, the THUMBS.DB file saves the thumbnails of the files that are in that directory (folder). You normally would not be able to delete it, as it is technically a system file. You might try taking ownership of the file, then try to delete it again.Add " Take Ownership " to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista

I have a huge collection of very small (8x8 to 16x16) images that I need to look through. It would be nice if I could see each picture zoomed in to a larger size, since it is hard to make out the detail with the naked eye. However, when I try to zoom in using Windows Explorer, the displayed size of the images doesn't change at all, only the space between them. If I open the image with Windows Photo Viewer, which came with my computer, I can zoom in and out using the mouse wheel. However, the moment I move to the next or previous image, the zoom reverts back to the normal setting, forcing me to zoom in again. This quickly becomes unbearably tedious for thousands of images, and I was wondering if there's a better way to let me see the zoomed in images.

Answer:Viewing very small images using Windows

Hello,

I have a Dell computer running Windows XP. I've noticed that certain websites are not displaying properly; graphics are missing from some pages (not all graphics, just one or two). For example, the banner at the top of nytimes.com will not show. There doesn't seem to be an order to the missing graphics; it seems to be randomly blocking certain graphics, both jpg and gif. If I visit a new site, I do not know if I'm seeing all there is to see!

Does anyone have any idea what would cause this problem? I have my security settings at "Medium." I also use McAfee virus scan and firewall.

Thanks in advance for any input you can offer!

Michelle
