changing desktop and folder icons to display photo thumbnails

Question: changing desktop and folder icons to display photo thumbnails

Hello! All my mp4 and wmv video icons on my desktop and folders suddenly changed from convenient photo thumbnails to generic mp4 and wmv icons. The photos enable me to identify the vids, especially if there are no captions for them.

How do I get the photo icons back? I considered system restore, but my restore points don't go back far enough.

Using Windows 7. Thanks for your assistance!

Preferred Solution: changing desktop and folder icons to display photo thumbnails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Changing folder icons to show open or closed and changing default folder icons like "Favorites".

Here we go again.

I have recentely learned how to change a folder icon manually in Windows Explorer, and now would like to be able to manually change the folder so it shows the folder open and shows the folder closed.

I would also like to know how to change default folder like "Favorites" and "Control Panel"

I have tried this Right Click> Properties>Customize>Change Icon>Browse. Then I find the icon I want to use and then click ok then apply then pk again. Then the box disappears and then it shows the same yellow folder.

Here's the problem I am having. There was a iconset I downloaded from iconarchives and in the set there was 2 different kind of folders 1 was open but looked empty and one was open and had a image in it. Is there any possible way to use both for folders.

For example here's a link to the plain open folder Folder Icon | Yoritsuki Iconset | Hybridworks its called Folder Icon I would like to be able to use them for every folder icon even the main folders. But things I have for videos and music and specific things I would like to use the Folder 2 Icon | Yoritsuki Iconset | Hybridworks folder 2 icon.

I would like to be able to use both folder. Because this way I don't need the previews I would still be able to know what is in where just by there being the plain image.

I know this is a weird question. But just so you get the basic point. What I am trying to do is use the first folder as the folder for everything. And use the second folder for my things like that have my pics and videos and music.
I had found out what I needed to do to change the folder icons. As well as a few other icons. Like file type icons for .mp3 and so on.

Hi:
I have Windows XP Pro. About a week ago I received 2 Microsoft automatic updates. It was about Net frame SP1 and I also installed Internet Explorer 8. Yesterday I went to my Photos folder and all the Jpeg image files with the picture preview thumbnails used to identify the photos have all been replaced with the jpeg file type magnifying glass icon. Others have the Bitmap image type icon. I can no longer identify my photos with the thumbnails. Furthermore, when I open any of the current magnifying glass thumbnail, the photo appears in Internet Explorer. I don't like that. Before this, it used to open in Windows (I think). I opened another magnifying glass thumbnail and it looked like a bar code all scribbly. How do I get my Jpeg and Bitmap images back to the preview thumbnails like it used to be before I installed the updates? Or maybe it was something else that changed the settings? I tried to do a System Restore only to be disappointed by System Restore having been turned off with no restore date to choose.

1. Taskbar icons gone (replaced by a neutral identical icon) except Edge and Store
2. In File Explorer, no longer thumbnails, no icons either, simply blank, but names show

4. When I rightclick to "Properties" (on desktop icons, or File Explorer items) nothing happens

When ever I open a folder with many files it takes a while to open or the icons/thumbnails take a long time to generate and in task manager it can be seen that msmpeng.exe is using a core of my cpu @ 100% level. disabling MSE fixes the problem. i've no other anti malware/security application. just MSE and windows firewall. i installed malware bytes now to verify that my system has no spyware though (came clean). windows defender is disabled.

this problem is easily replicated with my downloads from firefox folder (problem is most obvious with this folder) and for a strange reason the stalker call of pripyat benchmark application installer. i'm facing this issue regardless of version - 1611, 1959 & 1961.

this is a clean installation of windows. formatted it just the day before. all windows updates applied too.

Answer:MSE slow display of icons and thumbnails

I also noticed the same thing with a folder I store downloaded ***.exe programs.
When I open this folder, the small icons take 20 seconds to load. This is definitely an MSE bug of some sort and has been reported to MS and they are aware of it.

Hi techs,
Is there a way of disabling video thumbnails on folder icons while keeping image thumbnails enabled (at the same time) in Windows 7 ? I tried all options available in folder options but to no avail. The puzzling thing is that my efforts were successful on two folders but doing the same thing for the rest did not work. Whether this result was random, I dont know. What I did for those two folders was to access folder options from the individual folders (i.e. selecting 'Customise this folder' from the 'View' menu drop-down), everything else failed. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Is this caused by some program I may be using?

This has been bugging me for a while!

Very often when I open a folder to view its contents and choose a thumbnail display ( as opposed to list, details or tiles ) then the folder icons are emblazoned with .jpg images seemingly chosen at random from the images on my hard drive. ( Actually it might not be entirely random, the images displayed are often those I've viewed or edited recently )

It's a pain in the pudenda because after I have chosen an appropriate image to identify the contents of a folder ( say a picture of the Eiffel Tower to denote that the folder is full of pictures of Paris ) the next time I open My Pictures ( or wherever the folder is stored ) I get a random image ( say, a Peruvian llama )

Doesn't only affect picture folders and it even affects the folders that don't allow customisation ( ie those that have no 'Customise' tab in 'Properties' )

I have tried deleting one image that was appearing frequently from My Pictures but it still appears on the folder.

Am I missing a trick with the "Remember each folder's Settings.." stuff? should I be messing with "thumbs.db" ?

I really don't want to lose the work I've put in choosing pictures for the folders that are correctly adorned so a "Global/Nuclear" option would be a real last resort!

I'm using a hp desktop computer running Windows XP SP2

Answer:Folder thumbnails display random images

Hi

sadly XP will only remember a set number of folder customisations by default, this causes the exact issue your seeing now with random changes to certain folders images, you can however get around this by increasing the amount of folders that XP remembers, Download Powertoys for XP and install the TweakUI component.

Once installed and run click, Explorer then Customizations and change the default value to something like 5000 ( more if you have alot of folders ) > Apply

Hello

I have a weird problem that started happening few weeks ago.
This only happens to the folders on the Desktop.
The thumbnails that are shown on the folder (attached image) well they simply disappear (it changes to a normal folder like icon) if I add a new file to the folder, regardless of the type (picture, video, txt doc, exe etc) or even if I delete or cut a file from that folder to another folder. It's like the folders have a certain memory of itself and a slight change messes up the thumbnails.

I have tried uninstalling the last few software applications I've installed but the problem still persists.
I have tried deleting the hidden system file desktop.ini but nothing.

Again, this only happens to the folders on the Desktop.
A possible solution might be creating a new user account but I'm not willing to do that and searching for alternatives.

Thumbnails inside the folders work flawlessly.

Just as a test, maybe you could create a new user and see how the thumbnails behave ob that user's desktop. you can delete that user and the files after we are done testing.

I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:

When I open a folder under "Pictures", I only get a generic icon, not a thumb-nail of the photo stored there. If I open the same folder under "Windows Photo Gallery, the thumb-nails are correctly presented.
The manuals I have seen indicate that thumb-nails should be present in "Pictures" (when icons is selected), much the same as in XP although the "thumbnails" option is not offered with VISTA.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have unchecked the option to 'show icons instead of thumbnails' (view>options>folder options) and I have checked 'show icons' (performance>advanced) but still I get icons instead of thumbnails. I have closed and restarted file explorer multiple times to no change. I have posted the screenshot below to show the current settings. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Answer:Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

I have folder "Display file icon on thumbnails" checked for all folders.
Strangely when I create a new folder on the desktop and name it "bridge"
any icons in that folder change to large thumbnail types. If I just
change the folder name to "bridge1" or anything else the icons immediately
change back. I have many other folders that don't have this problem.

Hello,

This is my first post but have a tiny problem i`ll try to explain the best i can.

I bought a PC someone installed it for me and put some MAC theme on it i totally dislikes it but he says that he can`t change it back to "normal"windows 7

after some search work i started replacing files in the system32 map to get the actual windows 7 icons worked great so far.

except for 1 thing the actual folder icons are now ugly blue like things but can`t find the correct file were those icons are kept in so can`t change them back to "normal".

The files i replaced for the normal windows 7 files are:
imageres.dll
oobefldr.dll
explorerframe.dll
shell32.dll
explorer.exe

is there a file missing here were the normal folder icons are put in?
with the normal folder i mean the folder icons of all the icons in program files for example.
see attachment.

Please if someone can help me with this is would be very glad.

Answer:Changing Folder Icons

Hello,

Have they just set another Theme? Right click on the desktop and click personalize. Then see which theme is selected.

Setup - two monitors. Nvidia Quatro graphic card

Desktop background problem
I have set Personalisation - Desktop Background - Slideshow - Set Location to a Photo folder to use Photos - Change every minute - Shuffle Off (tried On as well but makes no difference) - Fit set to Fit.

Problem is that the images never change, though they are different ones on the two monitors.

I have tried various permutations of the above without any success. Which folder of photos I use doesn't make any difference to the situation - same two photos displayed.

My wife's laptop which is setup in the same way seems to have a similar but not identical problem. hers changes but only selects from 4 photos despite more being available in the chosen folder.

Suggestions appreciated!

Vista newb here, soon to be a 7 newb - hope this issue doesnt transfer.

I have a folder for all of my music and then subfolders for each type (country, random, etc).

When I go into one of the subfolders, my music is always listed in details.

I dont want it to, so I change it to view small icons.

If I then close the folder for several hours or even shut down/reboot, it goes back to the details.

I have since figured out how to change this by customizing the main folder, but it is now showing them in LARGE icons, which is just as annoying and keeps changing them back to large ones even after I switch it to small ones.

Can some one please tell me how to change this and make it STAY that way??

Hey all,

Trying to figure out a way to display thumbnails in certain folders (ie: Photos & Videos) and icons in others. Unfortunately it seems this isn't possible, as the only option I've found is to always show thumbnails in all folders or always show icon's.

Anyone happen to know a way around this, help is very appreciated!

Camaren

Answer:"Always Show Icons Never Thumbnails" - Folder Specific Option?

Hello Camaren,

Unfortunately it's just not possible. It's a all or none setting.

The only workaround that I know of to do this is to leave thumbnails turned on and manually change the icon of each folder that you do not want to have thumbnail views for.

It happened suddenly, today. I have 4 shortcuts on my desktop which I use to quickly save files to the various folders. I selected the Icons to make them look good and distinguish between them. After an upgrade they displayed white overlays which add nothing to their usefulness and look cruddy. I hope there's a way to get rid of them.

They do not show in File Explorer or Total Commander thumbnail view, only on the desktop. I think they work like the shortcut arrows. Maybe they replace the arrows.

I recently signed up as an Insider and currently using 161014. If there is a more appropriate forum please let me know.

Addendum: I just made a shortcut to a program rather than a subdirectory. It, too, has the white blob. So it is a replacement for the arrow.

Hello tcebob.

You might see if restoring the default shortcut arrow overlay icons may be able to have them show again.

Hey All,

I'm trying to change some folder icons to appear as if they were not shortcuts.

Right now the icons are in folder on the desktop that is a shortcut to a folder on a shared drive. The My Documents folder is set up as a shortcut to a folder on the shared drive.

I set the folders up this way because I was in a hurry. I'm almost sure that if I was to map the network drive to the My Documents folder properly, only the icons that are actual shortcuts would appear as such.

Any pointers/tips/ideas?

Answer:Changing folder icons/mapping drive

1. To start open Windows Explorer, choose Start, Programs, Accessories, and Windows Explorer.
2. Click to highlight the icon of the folder whose picture you would like to change.
3. Right click the folder and select Properties, and then click the Customize Tab.
4. Click on the Choose Picture button in the Folder pictures area of the Properties Window. Windows will now prompt you to select a picture to use. Navigate to the picture, and then click Open.

I've searched and found several things online that agree with the post on this forum here:
How to apply an image to a Folder

But unfortunately, the properties pane on any folder I right click on in my documents library does not have a "customize" tab!!! Folders on my desktop have the customize tab.

Yes, I'm the administrator, this is a home desktop not on a domain and fresh install of win 7.

I'm at a loss at this point.

Okay, still confused but at least I found a 'workaround'.

When I went to my documents by clicking on my computer and going through the folders instead of clicking the my documents library, I was able to change it...

I have 19 blue Vista icons for the basic folders like Documents, Links, Empty Folder and Saved Games, as well as programs like WMP, Windows Mail, and so on.
Most of my icons have been changed with Folderico already, but doing it that way takes a long time. Obviously new folders will still look the same, so whenever I make a new one I have to waste time changing that one too. IconPackager's no good since the icons I want to use are all separate .ico files.
I haven't tried regedit yet because I'm not 100% sure what to do and I'm afraid that I'm going to mess something up, but I don't see any other alternatives right now.

So basically what I need to know is;
How do I change the icons permanently using either regedit* or any software that changes all icons correctly (ex: replacing Win7 Empty Folder icon with blue Vista Empty Folder icon for every single empty folder found)?

*I need a step-by-step guide, I'm basically like a five year old when it comes to this.

Answer:Changing default folder icons completely - How to?

Welcome to the Seven Forums
You'll find those icons in imageres.dll and with you using 64-bit it will be in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64
This tutorial will show you how to change folder icons Folder Icon - Change Default Icon you will need to do basically the same thing for like your Documents, Links, Saved Games etc. all those icons are in the imageres.dll also. HINT: put copies of the imageres.dll on your desktop and modify them to not touch the originals at this time.

After you have modified the .dll you will need to Take Ownership, give yourself Permission, Rename(The original one from imageres.dll to imageres.bak.dll) and Replace imageres.dll with the one you modified look at Post #6 of this thread and it will show you how to do that Basic Networking Information
After you have done this you will need to Icon Cache - Rebuild

Let me know if you need further advice.

So I am trying to figure out how/why this is the way it is. I have a user that has their desktop as a folder (quicklaunch style) on their taskbar. There are no desktop icons on the actual desktop and any new icons created by installing a program or dragging and dropping to the desktop are moved to this idiotic location on the taskbar.

I have checked the registry and Shell folders appear correct.

I have a feeling that a previous user has used something similar to Tweak UI and changed this and now it has me scratching my head. Any suggestions on restoring this desktop?

Hi,

I've googled my behind off trying to find a solution or answer to a fairly simple question, which I don't understand it seems, (even though I'm fairly smart otherwise ). Hopefully someone here can explain it to me.

Here goes:

I know how to make icon files, and change them on my desktop folders or shortcuts. My problem is that when I try to make an .ico file it always present itself very very tiny.

I can't seem to get (or make) a nice big icon to replace another.
It drives me crazy. I mean it!

Can anyone help?

I've attached a link to a picture that shows my problem here.
Thank You!

Try stardock fences. It working for me and it has the added feature of Dbl-clicking the desktop will hide/reveal icons that you choose. I have noticed that whenever I change my graphics drivers I have the same problem which is why I downloaded fences.

the thing is this problem has been like this for some time now and it is beginning to bug me.

What I would like to know is.... how do I change a desktop icon so that the writing underneath the icon is shown over the top of the desktop picture... as in screenshot 1
rather than surrounded by the background colour as in screenshot 2

I hope this makes some sense.

Looking forward to hearing back from you

Welcome to TSG!
Icons changing could be a sign of the "ShellIconCache" file being to small and you are bumping the top end of it. If so the best way to solve this problem is to increase the size of the cache.
You can do it two ways.....
1) Manually using the regedit command from the run line navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer key and add a value and value name as follows:
"Max Cached Icons"="8000"

or

2) Download the attached txt file but do not open it. Right click it and change the full name from iconcache.txt to iconcache.reg and save. If you have done it correctly the iconcache files icon will change to blue building blocks. Now if you double left click that icon it will initiate the merge and say OK. This will create the lines in the registry required, set the cache to 2048, and give you the ability to change it easily in Folder Options\View tab.

Let us know if that fixes the problem for you.

Some of my desktop icons are changing to an icon that looks like a miniature desktop. I had a similar problem a few months ago where the icons were changing to icons that looked like a globe. I cleared the icon cache and let Windows rebuild it. I tried this this time and it does not work. I have Windows 7 Home Premium.

Answer:desktop icons changing

Hi, I would have thought a problem with the Icon Cache as well, it does depend on how you go about it you will need to kill the explorer.exe process and reset the attributes for it to work properly. Try this:-

Go to Start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select ?run as administrator?

Code:
type "taskkill /im explorer.exe /f" without quotes press enter

Now type each line and press enter after each line.
Note the spaces.

CD %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local

attrib -h IconCache.db

del IconCache.db

Now type exit and press enter
Reboot to take effect

Hi, I am using Windows XP SP2. I have recently noticed that some of the Icons on my Desktop (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher and JASC Photo Album) have been replaced with a small white screen Icon with a narrow blue panel at the top. If I right click the Icons and select properties the ability to change Icon is greyed out. The same has happened to these programmes Taskbar Icons. The programmes still work OK and no other Icons have changed. I think (but am not certain) that the problem started after an automatic update to Adobe Acrobat Reader.I have tried the Icon rebuilding utility in Tweak UI to no avail!Any suggestions/comments would be welcome.

Answer:Desktop Icons Changing by Themselves?

Tweak UI is notorious for having unpredictable effects. Try deleting (or safer just renaming) IconCache.db and letting Windows rebuild it. IconCache.db is usually in C:/Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data), but if it isn't, a search should find it.

For some reason, the icons on my desktop for some (but not all) of my pdf files keep changing, from the standard Adobe icon to a "preview" icon that shows the first page of the document. I have tried rebuilding my font cache; the "Allow themes to change desktop icons" box is **unchecked**; and I have increased the size of the icon cache to 8192 by adding the appropriate line in the registry.

I can revert these icons to the Adobe version by opening the file and then saving it again with the same name, but it doesn't last. If I move the files to a new folder on the desktop, the icons will change to the one I want if I select "Large" or "Extra Large" icon size, but as soon as I select "Medium", it reverts to the "preview" style. I have attached two screenshots as examples. Same file, all I did was to switch icon sizes back and forth.

Sometimes moving the file from the folder on the desktop back onto the desktop itself will revert it to the Adobe icon, sometimes not.

Any ideas??????

Answer:Desktop pdf icons keep changing

Welcome to Seven Forums msnyder701. I haven't used adobe reader for years. This may work, I was searching for the path to disable previews within adobe as well, I could not find them. Most people want the previews, and it is broken, there is a fix for that

Try this:

Start> In search box type desktop> Enter> The desktop folder will open> Upper left Organize> Folder and search options> View tab> Tick Always show icons, never thumbnails> Apply and OK your way out

See if that works, it will only apply to the desktop folder unless you tell windows to apply to all folders. Of course, no thumbnails will show on the desktop now, only icons.

I hope this is the right place to post this question. I searched the archives but no luck.

My problem is more an annoyance than anything. At times when desktop programs are opened or closed, the desktop icons rearrange themselves. Like after I close a program the entire desktop sorta blinks and the icons are in a different position.

When the computer starts (Windows XP Home SP3) the orientation is jumbled, not like I had the icons normally arranged. I have a nifty program that memorizes the desktop and then can restore it the way I would normally want it to be set. So that makes this more an annoyance than anything.

I've tried setting the desktop to 'auto-arrange' and/or 'set to grid' but neither of these settings work to prevent icon position changing. I recently got a new monitor (Samsung 245BW) and the problem started after installation.

I am assuming that the monitor driver is causing the problem but if I uninstall the driver, the monitor won't work right so that seems to limit my options.

Any ideas? Need more info? I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has some ideas and thanks in advance.

Robert

Answer:Changing Desktop Icons

It's a feature of Windows so icons don't end up off screen if you change resolutions. If you run a program that changes your screen resolution to a smaller value (say a game that runs in 640x480 full screen), any icons that would be "off screen" at that resolution are automatically re-arranged to fit on the smaller size screen.

There has to be a way to avoid that, as the Windows Media Center interface does not re-arrange icons when it switches resolution, but I'm sure that would have to be coded into each program.

Currently running Vista 64bit SP2. When running other Windows such as XP & 7, I copy back my desktop icons and folders (excluding system folders & icons) to the new desktop when I've reformatted. My HDD is partioned as C & D, D being where I keep files and programs to copy back or run again. I create a new folder called Desktop "Something or Another" and I don't copy the Desktop Folder currently running, only its contents. Whilst I can open my Desktop Folder using Windows 7 64bit, when I try to do the same in Vista, it just won't open and reverts back to the desktop I'm currently using, albeit losing a lot a stuff on the desktop before it's fine again. Trying to open the folder in Safe Mode or with the anti-virus/firewall turned off makes no difference. How can I fix this please?

Hi, I have all of my movies in a folder on a 1TB WD external hard drive. Each movie is in a folder with a custom icon (ico format). This has always worked well until recently; when the hard drive is turned back on, the icons return back into the default windows folder. In addition to this, the size of the icons usually changes from large to medium, and sometimes even to list form! Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks!

Additional Details:
-folder icons are located within the external hard drive
-running 32 bit vista
-could this possibly be because I have too many folders with different icons??? (there are probably well over 100!

Answer:[SOLVED] Folder Icons in External Hard drive Keep Changing!

It's often caused by the drive letter changing each time it's plugged in if other USB devices are also being connected in a different order from last time. A different drive letter means the path to the icons folder will be invalid, so Windows is forced to substitute with the standard icons.

Try putting the icons on to an internal hard drive whose drive letter is constant.

Hi all!

I would like to add some web Shortcuts to my desktop and then change the icon so it shows a graphic for what the item is. I know how to add a web site short to the desktop, but the icon is just generic. For example, say I want to add an web shortcut for Taco Bell and for UCLA (for example). I add the short cuts to the desktop, then I want to make the generic icons look like Taco Bell's bell logo and UCLA's mascot (a bruin). I assume there is an easy way to do this because I have seen these; I am just clueless on how to do it. Can you point me in the right direction, please? Thanks!!

Hi,
I have a wierd thing happening with 3 desktop icons changing to a different lcon which looks like a white square with a red blue and green "dot" in the center, sitting in a white peice of paper with the top right edge folded . When I boot they are fine and just as normal, then somwhere along the line of just using my computer they will change to this. Its always the same 3 and they are Shortcuts to favourites. Theres also 1 on the taskbar that sometimes does it.

I have no idea what "triggers" this behaviour.

Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks for any help.

i've googled this to no avail so i thought i'd go to computerforum but they were no help and i heard that tech-forums was its biggest competitor. so here i am. is there a way, any way, to change the size of the icons on my desktop to 61x61 and leave the icons everywhere else at 32x32? such as on the right side of my start menu, or in explorer, all the icons there are 61x61 also and i want them smaller while keeping the desktop icons at 61x61.

Answer:changing the size of desktop icons only

You are on Windows XP, correct?

Right-click on the desktop, click properties.
Click on the "appearance" tab
Click the Advanced button
Select "Icon" from the Item box
Change the size up and down on the right of it.
Click OK to remove the dialogs and enjoy!

All my desktop shortcuts have funny images in the corners. They keep changing, disappearing, coming back. First it was grey Xs. Then big green check marks. Today it was speakers & then circles with a red line through them. They come & go. I am running Windows 8. Anyone ever heard of this? Can't find anything online about it. Virus scans are clear & they don't seem to be hurting anything, but dammit, it's bothering me. They usually have a green dot meaning Carbonite has backed them up if that has anything to do with it.

Answer:strange, changing desktop icons

Yes, I've heard of it, but I have no idea what it is.

Thanks!!

I keep a number of weblinks on my desktop. For easy identification, i change the look of the icons using the Web Documents Tab in the Properties window. I replace the IE file icon with icons i've downloaded and some i've constructed. I keep these in a C:\Icons folder. Sometimes, some of the the icons (for no apparent reason) change back to the IE file icon without any action from me. When i pull up the Properties window, the icon i chose is still showing in the title bar and the window, yet the desktop is showing the IE file icon.
Weird, eh?
If i change the icon using the one from the default DLL (%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll) and click Apply, the desktop icon will change and stay that way. Yet, if i then change the icon again by clicking Browse, navigating to my folder on C:, then clicking Apply, the desktop icon will once again show the IE file icon and the Properties window title bar and window will once again show my chosen icon. Right back were i was to begin with.
Weirder. eh?
Sometimes, the icons will stick for weeks until i add another desktop weblink and choose an icon for it. When i go back to the desktop, the new icon will show my change, but some other weblink icon will have reverted back to the IE file icon. Or, an icon that reverted to an IE files icon (and i got tired of of trying to change it) will change to the icon of my choice!?!?!?
That is the weirdest...
Anyone have the same issues? Any suggestions? Thanx

Answer:desktop weblink icons keep changing

Hello Stlcardsfan,

The icons you are using may not be 256x256 bit icon files for Vista. When they are not displaying like they should, change the icon View size to Classc to see if they afterwards. If they do, then you do not have the correct icon file type.

This tutorial may help you out some more.

Hope this helps,

I have quite a few desktop icons. But they are spaced so that they take up only the left 60% or so of the desktop. I want to spread them out for easier finding. But I can't find a way to do this. I went to the icon spacing program in desktop properties but that doesn't do anything. When I do to vertical spacing and increase the number there, the desktop appearance doesn't change at all. Is there something I can to to increase the space between the vertical rows? grandpaw7

I have a Dell 2400 and use XP.

Hiya. I'm trying to disable the Thumbnails for those ugly "Live Folders". However, I can't seem to figure out how to turn them off without also disabling the thumbnails for individual image files.

Does anybody know how to disable *just* the Live Folder thumbnails?

my desktop shortcut icons keep changing size and moving about. this isn't a big deal; just annoying. check out the attachments. any ideas?

Answer:desktop shortcut icons keep changing/moving

That's a new problem! Try clearing the icon cache by deleting hidden file iconcache.db from C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Local and restart. Also try running sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt and restart.

I've got the problem of the desktop icons changing and I remember it's something to do with the icon cache. Where is it, and does anyone know the fix please ?Also, where I've put several shortcuts into one folder, can I change the icon for that too ?And finally, if I wanted to put the icons in a single line around the desktop edge (I know I have to 'untick' auto arrange) do I still have to line them up manually ? Thanks in advance

I had a problem with my desktop icons changing where they were and their size
If anyone else has this problem I would try this
Show hidden files
Go to your user/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows
Delete or rename the file UsrClass.dat
It will say it cannot delete the file as it is in use but tell it to anyway
Reboot
Windows will make a fresh file and your icons will stay where you have put them

I was able to right-click a shortcut to a file on my desktop, click properties then change the icon. Its not working like that now. The icon won't change.
Also, I use to have an Icon changer and manager program years ago. What do you suggest as a new program today that will change and manage my icons?
Thank you!

All,

Can someone please help me with this? Here's some history.

BTW - My system is Vista Home Premium 64-bit

NVIDIA was randomly changing the placement of my desktop icons. UNTIL, I updated the drivers to 191.07. After that, the desktop stabilized and I didn't have an issue.

NOTE: My version of NVIDIA is 8500 GT/9200 (not sure why it has two?)

I just updated the drivers today to 197.13 and sure enough . . . during installation, it took my desktop icons, rearranged them, and shoved them all to the left. I cannot tell you how irritating this is to me.

I have read some of the other threads and the general concensus then, was that there is no way to lock the desktop.

Has anyone found a way to either lock the desktop or resolve this issue? I assume I'm not alone in this.

Course the "easy" fix would be to just restore back to the earlier drivers, but . . . I'm thinking that it's really best to have the most up-to-date ones - yes??

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Meltie

Answer:NVIDIA Changing Desktop Icons Position

most likey its a undocumented bug in the nvidia install and vista reset the desktop to its default settings.
you could try ultramon which does have a save position option for icons and then you save your desktop as a profile. also remember to untick the auto arrange option b right clicking the desktop then view

My 92 year old father living in a nursing home has a fancy HP laptop running Vista. He is not computer literate and not connected to the Internet. I'm still using Windows XP at home and am having trouble setting things up for him. Some time ago I had downloaded a lot of jpeg photos onto his laptop in separate file folders, sorted by subject matter. I had previously created desktop icons for the first photo in each folder so that he could just click on them and start a slide show of the photos just in that folder. This was working at one time but now shows random photos from many folders as Windows Photo Gallery has apparently taken over (maybe reverting to a default situation after the laptop battery ran out of power?). I'm not clear whether I was using Photo Gallery or some other utility that came with the computer when it was working before. I have tried bringing the photo folders inside of Photo Gallery's file structure but couldn't find a way to do what I want without involving more steps than my Dad could handle. Maybe I need to change the default program for jpeg files? That would assume that there is another photo displaying program that came with the computer (maybe part of the Vista bundle or possibly a trial version of something else that has expired?). Any ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Creating desktop icons for inviidual photo slide shows in Vista

Try Irfanview

It's free and has slide show built in. During install when it asks for file associations just click Images Only Button. The rest just click next. It's very easy to use.

Edit: I believe if you do the same thing.. make a shortcut for the first file in each folder, it will show the next file if you press the right arrow key or click on the right arrow in the toolbar.

Hey; wierd problem here! I partitioned my HDD, giving the OS and all my installs on the C drive 20Gb, and the rest for my Files (F) drive! This is to make sure that if something goes wrong with any installs/with the registry etc, none of my files will be effected. None but the desktop files, which are still on the C drive. I was just wondering if there was a way to change which folder your desktop stores its files in?

i.e. is there any way to save a file to your desktop, and have it actually saved on another (non C:) drive?

Cheers

Answer:Changing the desktop folder

Hi,

You can change the directory to where your "My Documents" is located. I currently have it set up so that it is on a completely different partition.

As for the desktop..that is totally dependent on where the "Documents and Settings" folder is located and that is dependent on where your OS is installed.

Why not create folders or place your files on your other partition and create shortcuts on the desktop?

I already the know the answer to this question, but as momma always said "dont assume".

Is there anyway I can change the folder used for the desktop under Windows XP Pro Sp2

i.e. Normally your desktop folder is:

x:\Documents and Settings\[profile name]\Desktop

I would like to change it to:

x:\CustomDesktop

Obviously for the change to work it has to be accepted throughout the OS, in a similar fashion to the the ability to change the location of MyDocuments

This might seem like an odd thing to do, but I have my reasons

i believe you can do such a thing using tweak UI
