Can't Change Back to Default Windows 7 Icons from another Themes Icons

Question: Can't Change Back to Default Windows 7 Icons from another Themes Icons

Hello, when i first got my compute i installed a custom theme changing basically evrything about my computer and its apearence on the desktop. This includes the icons as well. When i tried to revert back to the original windows 7 icons it seems that this theme (which is third party I should mention has changed their icons to the default ones) has made the their icons the default. I was wondering if their is a way to get the original windows 7 icons back.
Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:How can I change my Wondows 7 icons/folders back to default?

Hello C4L1D3N and welcome

Firstly run this up to 3 times or until it returns no errors and reboot between runs - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then run this - Icon Cache - Rebuild

If that doesn't solve the issue you may consider restoring your system to before you installed the icon changer - System Restore

Hi guys,
I've recently attempted to patch my folder icons manually with Resource Hacker. It didn't work, in fact it had worked for some folders but most folders remains the same beige icons.
I got frustrated since every step seems correct, but anyways I decided to revert back to normal, by replacing the custom imageres.dll file with the original to both System32 and SysWOW64 folder, and deleting iconcache.db for it to rebuilt.
Most icons revert back to normal after that, but except the folder icons in the C:\Windows folder, where some of them are still showing up with the custom icon.
I've restarted, tried changing the icon and rebuilt the cache file so many times, I even restored to a backup point before the change is made, but still no luck.
I've taken ownership for the necessary files and have run as admin when necessary.

Any ideas why this is happening? and if anyone can provide some tips to successfully change all folder icons, I will be really appreciated. Thanks.

This isn't a serious problem, but it is annoying since it has never happened before and I'm used to having a Win XP custom desktop.

Anyway, I can't think of anything new that I've done to my computer as of late except install Spybot and other spyware detecting programs (Hijack This!, etc.) but now, whenever I restart or turn off my computer, my custom icons revert to default windows icons.

By this I mean:

My Computer
My Documents
My Network Places
Recycle Bin (full)
Recycle Bin (empty)

I can normally customize these by clicking right clicking on the desktop > Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Change Icon

But, just as of this week, they have begun to revert back to the boring default windows icons.

I'm sure this is a simple problem but I can't for the love of God figure out how to fix it.

Any suggestions would be incredibly appreciated.

A while ago, I dled a program w/ many new icons. I changed them, and I didnt like the new ones, so i uninstalled the program. The ugly icons are still on my desktop and start menu. How do i change them back?

Answer:How can I get the default icons back?

Are these icons that came with the program and you just want to get rid of them? If so just drag the offending icon to the recycle bin. If this is a program that changed icons on your desktop that you want to keep such as My Computer etc, right click on the icon > choose properties > click change icon. You may have to point it to the folder that the icon / program resides in. Then choose which icon you want, click apply and you are done. Repeat for each icon you want to change.

This is going to seem very shallow compared to the crashed harddrives and any number of horrible problems with your computers. I'm sorry, I'm the sort of person who has problems with the OS itself. I don't have problems with security or technical support.

I have searched google, and probably seven different forums about this problem. And it's baffled me how many people don't know how to change an Icon... So much that they'd have hundreds of threads dedicated to. RIGHT CLICK, CHANGE ICON, APPLY.

Just... Retarded.

At the same time. I don't know how many threads I went through where people were like "I HAVE A VIRUS CALLED DESKTOP INI. PLEASE HELP!"

More Retarded.

But furthermore, no matter what I type into Google. I can't find a way to make Windows do ONE thing. And that is. To "Change the Default Folder Icon" so that when I "Create a NEW FOLDER" it comes out BLANK.

---

That's all I want.

---

I went into Shell32.dll, and I replaced the Default Folder Icon with an empty Icon [Set]. When it creates a New Folder. It's STILL the default Folder. Worse. If I try to CHANGE the Folder to it's Default Folder. It's STILL the Default folder Icon. Instead of the Empty one. EVEN IF IT SHOWS THAT ITS AN EMPTY ICON.

I have vista with ie7 and Maxthon installed. Once Maxthon was installed and set as the default browser all of the shortcuts to web pages that i have (i.e. favorites folder) and a few on my desktop all use the maxthon icon. I am able to manually change them back to the "e" icon by right clicking and changing icon. What i want to do is set it so that every NEW shortcut i create, as well as the old ones automatically use the "e" icon instead of the Maxthon one.

I do not like how the default icons look like and I know a lot of people would agree with me. So, I remember at much older Win versions we was able to change the default icons for any thing. But now I only found an option to change the icon for 1 folder at a time, which is good with some individual folders that needs to look different. But files like .zip or .rar just look ugly next to them. Changing icon for each of them individually takes toooooooo much time and still each time a new file comes the same problem is there. So, my question is, if I can change the default icons for a different types of files (just must be an option, lol)? Thanks!

Not sure this is the right place, BUT can't find anything better so I try here first.
I want to change one of the default icons of Vista. As far as I know Windows uses two: a blank-ish default icon and one for files that are not quite unknown but don't have an icon. This sounds like acacadabra (but magic doesn't work) - maybe it's a lot clearly if I mention which icon I mean: it's the first (nr. 0) icon in SHELL32.DLL. I'd like very much to change this icon, without tinkering with the shell32.dll-file itself. Can't find the spot in the registry (if any...) to do this. Have been searching for an answer for ages, without any luck. Can anyone help?

Answer:I want to change one of the default icons of Vista

Sorry, but any resources in a system DLL file require the modification of that DLL to change them. You have to use a program like ResHacker to do it. It's not for the faint of heart, as you are doing something that if botched can really screw up your system.

Hi this is the problem I am facing. I upgraded for windows 10 few months ago. The problem is when I set an app for default for a file the old icon is only showing. it never changes. For an example if I choose to set VLC media player as default for an Mp4 file which presently opened by windows movie player even if I change it to VLC it will again show the Windows movie app icon instead of VLC. This is a big problem for. I need response asap. The only solution I know is I need to restart explorer. But in windows 8.1 It was all Ok. I have rebuilt the icon cache also. It did not work. So I need a solution. THANKS

Ok so I've been fooling around with my icons these past few days. I changed some of them manually by simply going through the customize tab and others changed by using iconpackager from Stardock. However today I found an icon package I liked so I tried to apply the entire thing. Most icons changed but a few of them remained as they were before (ciment was the type I was using). I tried restoring all icons to the windows default through iconpackager and manually, and while most of them changed, again those select few retained the ciment icon look. I have this sick feeling that I somehow replaced the default folders for those select few even though I have no idea how I could have done that.

I just want to start fresh now, right back from the start. Is there a simple way to do this?

This is a weird problem I've notice in two computers I have, both with Vista. I assigned custom icons to various folders (like on my pictures I have an .ico file picture of a camera and on my documents I have an .ico picture of garfield, etc....) On both computers (one a desktop and the other a laptop) after about 1 month, the folders .ico went back to default, they both went back to the plain manilla folder .ico picture. I can manually put the custom icons back but its kind of a hassle. I don't have any idea why both computers have done this? Must be something I can do to stop it?? Any ideas

When I booted up my computer this morning the desktop wallpaper had reverted back to factory default, plus all the settings. Some of the icons on the desktop were missing as well. When I opened IE8 all its settings were back to default like it had only just been installed. And I could not connect to the internet. I also could not find my documents, so decided to turn on 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'. Thankfully the folder showed up in documents and settings. I did a system restore from the 6th July and this seemed to fix the problem with my desktop back to normal. Could this be hardware related?

I was afraid of going through the clean up process as I have to disable the CD emulation drivers using DeFogger, as you then need to re-boot your PC. Should I back up all my files, then do the malware removal process and report back? Thanks in advance.

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

To show an example (I'm sorry the text is in swedish I hope you can somewhat understand):

Answer:Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe&... Read more

- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

hi there

i start to get really weird problem lately...

the Explorer toolbar of windows 7 sometimes show me different icons only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, use..java? o_O

it show the icons of the last progrem i used, like if i will enter to Utorrent window, then i will see it icon on the next progrem i will try to launch like Windows defender.. (only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, and use Java, games and etc not effect by that).

however when i restart my pc the problem is fixed.. till i open progrems like Jdownloader or progrem that use Java (i think... i not test it many times yet..), or wait really alot of time when the pc is on... there is a small chance that it come from some filters or codecs because i watch animes really alot and use CCCP codec pack...

this problem happend to me long time ago and was fixed by itself.. i also format since then so i thought it was gone for good...

anyone know how to fix it? O_o

*i attach two pics , and btw i have Hebrew language OS so don't panic when you see the desktop from right to left instead of left to right ^^

Hi All,

Wondering if you can offer me some pointers here......

Brink put together an excellent tutorial on this process for Windows 7 (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...tom-icons.html) and with some adaption for the revisions to the Metadata Authoring Wizard contained in the Windows 10 Drivers Kit I have already customised my device icons and even provided some (limited) assistance to others grappling with the task (iPhone shown as Unspecified in Devices and Printers).

All that is, with a couple of pesky exceptions namely the main system icon which remains set at it's somewhat bland generic Windows 10 image and I am at a loss as to how to change it to a more representative custom image....

Can change folder and shortcut icons with XP features, but is there an XP feature or 3rd party software package (possibly freeware) that can change (all extension types) file icons ?
Am looking at shareware (about $20) 'IconChanger 3.7' but not sure what file extensions it can work with (have emailed IC tech support for that list, but have not yet heard back).
Any ideas ?

Answer:How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

I've found a couple of free ones. There's the XP Transformation Pack which will make XP look like Vista (I think). I have another one, but I can't remember what it's called or where I downloaded it from. I think I have the info at home (I'm at work right know) and if I find it, I'll be sure to post it...

Edit: here's one I found whilst Googling. It's an icon pack for about 30 or 40 different extensions....
http://interfacelift.com/icons-win/details.php?id=1928 Their home page provides access to a bunch of other icons... check it out.. If you're interested in making your own icons, there's lots of tools out there. The free ones are OK but usually limited in features. IconCool is one of the better ones, but it's not free. I Googled "XP icons" and found lots of stuff...

Edit #2: if you have seen icons already on your PC that you'd like to extract for personal use, use IconSnatcher. It will look inside EXE files and DLL files (and lots of others) http://www.snapfiles.com/get/iconsnatcher.html

Question: Icons/Themes

Several of my icons have changed to the windows logo icons. What happened and how can I get them back? One example is my Netscape icons, 2 now have the window logo icon and the other one has the application icon. I also lost my Themes. I'm working on that too. thanks...
Ok, I solved the Themes problem. I haven't figured out the icon problem yet. Any suggestions?

Answer:Icons/Themes

The only thing that I can think of is somehow your original icon was deleted and Windows is just reverting to a standard icon. Try right clicking on the icon you want to change, click on properties, click on the 'shortcut' tab and then click on 'change icon'. From here you will be able to access the icon you want from the list of icons or you can 'browse' your hard drive for the location of your original icon. Good luck!

So, I have a fresh install of windows xp pro on this computer, and I did all the updates to it and installed a few of the baseline spyware programs (adaware, spybot, etc) and then i tried to install adobe reader 8 and after the install, the icon was only the default application picture and not the adobe picture. I tried browsing to the director to see if i could just select the icon, but it wasn't there: they were all the default application icon. I then tried installing other programs to see what would happen, and sure enough, the other programs icons were the same. I even tried reinstalling some of the applications, but to no avail. I also noticed that the .exe files that normally have an individual icon are also the default application icon. Any ideas on how to fix that?

The database file is located at:

I would never want to use a full theme, because they seem to take over everything. I like my cursor and windows just the way they are! But, sometimes I like the desktop icons or wallpaper, and wish I could use only those. If I get a theme, can I somehow use only selected parts? For instance, would the icons go in a separate folder somewhere so I could use just a couple of whichever ones I want, for whatever I want?

I've already checked for spyware and viruses several times since this started happening. Could anyone help me figure out what is going on here? I'm running XP SP2.

i also tried to make a new folder with the same name, cut paste all of the icons into it and the issue still occur, and tried to disable some option that let the system choose what to change in my system's view (from look to performance) if it have hard time to display anything (which is hard for me to believe because i have I7 and Geforce 295 gtx..) and the issue still persist...

Here is our dilemma. At the community college I work at, the librarians have requested that certain icons be pinned to the taskbar for all users. By default, Internet Explorer, File Explorer, and Store are pinned on the taskbar in Windows 8.1.

Well, they want none of those icons pinned to the taskbar, but they do want other icons pinned. I have tried a script to get rid of them on logon, but it deletes the icons so slowly that users can actually notice the icons disappearing on logon (it takes about 2 seconds per icon to delete). The librarians dislike this.

So, has anyone figured out the mechanism that creates these three icons? I would like to figure out a way to disable their creation in the first place, if possible. Already, Windows will allow additional icons to be added; it simply won't allow these three to be removed.

Answer:How to remove default pinned taskbar icons in Windows 8.1?

Does anyone know how I can remove this? Its one of the last things holding me up from being ready day 1 to offer Windows 10 to my users.

TLDR | To be clear just need command line code to remove Edge from the taskbar. Anyone have any advise?

Please understand in my company of 100K employees, IE is the internal browser while Chrome is the external. Having Edge on the taskbar will creating a huge amount of support calls (especially given the icon looks alot like IE.)

Answer:windows 7 change look of icons

Hello Juuki, and welcome to Seven Forums.

What type (file extension) of files is affected by this?

For now, you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hey. I know this question has sort of been asked before, but the question is not exactly what I want to do.

First off, I have tried so many programs to change the icons in the following files:
imageres.dll
shell32.dll
I have tried to edit both of them in these folders, the System32, and the SysWOW64 folder with no success.

I have tried using Microangelo, Axialis IconWorkshop Resource Hacker and Restorator, non of them could save over the files.

I have taken owner and granted my self full permission of the files, still nothing.

I have managed to edit my icons to be what I want, but not the way I wanted to. The way I did it was with Stardock's IconPackager, but I don't know how it works, because it did not edit those dll files.

Here are some questions I have.
Do I have to edit both of the files that are in the System32 folder and the SysWOW64 folder for all the icons to be changed?

How do I edit these icons and put the icons that I want in? I need the .dll file to be modified so when I put it in my Windows 7 customized install disk, the icons will be how I want them.

So is there a program that I can use so I can edit all the icons and save them all I want without a problem?

Thanks.

Answer:How To Change All Windows 7 Icons

When editing the icons in the dll files, save the output as dll file in somewhere like desktop, and then replace the original with the modded one .

Edit all icons in such as imageres.dll , save the result as imageres.dll in desktop, and now replace the imageres.dll in system32 with the imageres.dll in desktop . When done, rebuild your icon cache .

This process works for me .

I've been on a customization kick recently, and I've got everything the way I want, except for my icons. I've found a ton at deviantart, but I don't really know of a way to change to the icons, except for Icon Packager. However, I want to avoid that because, well, it's $20 and annoying.

I've tried Googling it but all I've found is a ton of old, shitty shareware programs. Does anybody know of a way to go about doing it, preferably a free one?

Answer:What's the best way to change Windows icons?

the big 5 or 6 ('my computer' 'network places' 'recycle bin'...)

can be changed right on the desktop... right click desktop > properties > desktop > customize desktop > change icon...

system wide folder icons, for example, are a bit trickier.. but not impossible. i believe it's a reg hack... let me dig up a link...

Changing Common Icons
Updated 1/31/00

You can change many of the common Windows icons.

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ explorer \ Shell Icons
The default icons are numbered in the right panel from 0-40
Double click on the number of the particular icon you want to change. See the chart below.
Enter the name of the icon file you want to use followed by the number of the icon in that file.
Note: The numbering starts with zero.
If you use a single .ICO file, it should be followed by a 0.
e.g. - filename.dll,4 - This would actually be the 5th icon since it starts with 0.
Make sure you delete the hidden file C:\WINDOWS\SHELLICONCACHE
0-13 Are the Drive and Application Icons
0 - To change the Unknown Application Icon
2 - To change the Default Application Icon
3 - To change the Closed Folder Icon
4 - To change the Open Folder Icon
5 - To change the 5 1/4" Floppy Icon
6 - To change the 3 1/2" Floppy Icon
7 - To change the Removable Disk Icon
8 - To change the Hard Drive... Read more

I don't know if this happens on a regular basis, but I have been
downloading updates from MS and was using the Dark Skies theme
from MS. All was working fine. They were shuffling, etc, when all
of a sudden the desktop screen went black save the different icons
I have going. It looks much like the screen does when one is in
Safe Mode.

If any of you have had this problem, please enlighten on how you
remedied the situation.

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Had themes working fine, then screen went black save for icons !

Opps. Never mind. It was all the updates. Took over control of the
unit. Pretty sure the HD is on it's way out. It's been slowing down
and no I don't have a virus. Just did a reformat and fresh install,
so it's the drive. I have a LOT of hrs on it. Oh well.

Thanks for looking.

A small tip - You can change Library icons in Windows 8 using Library Properties.
Let us see this-
Create a new Library
Right click on this newly created Library to check its properties
And you get the Change library icon? button
This was not there in Windows 7

So I've seen a lot of posts on this subject but the thing I can't find is how to use one from a png or other file format

it looks as if it HAS to be in dll format, but I have an image that is a png that I want to use for a library icon, but I don't know how to tell windows that's the image I want since it's not a dll

can anyone direct me to somewhere I can see how to take a png and turn it into something I can use to make an icon for my library, thanks!

Answer:Change windows 7 library icons

Hello MaTax91, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Actually you would need a 256x256 pixel ICO file to use. If you like, you could ZIP your PNG and upload the ZIP in a reply post here. Afterwards, I would be happy to convert it into a 256x256 ICO file for you, and post it back in a ZIP. You could then use the tutorial below with step 5 to use the ICO file.

Hope this help,
