No icon on taskbar and no link in Start menu for new users

Question: No icon on taskbar and no link in Start menu for new users

Hi

I'm in Audit Mode.

I wish that all new users of Windows 7 SP1 had no icon on their taskbar and no link in their Start menu.

So, how do I do this?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: No icon on taskbar and no link in Start menu for new users

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: No icon on taskbar and no link in Start menu for new users

Try right clicking on each icon on the taskbar and on the start menu and choose unpin from taskbar or start menu.

Hello everyone,
Management has finally given the go-ahead to upgrade our end-users from IE 9 to 11. There major caveat mentioned is that they want the 64-bit shortcut to IE11 removed from the Start Menu. The reason is that we have a few proprietary applications that will
only function using a 32-bit version of Internet Explorer.
To avoid a flood of support calls, I'd like to automate this process. I'd rather be proactive than reactive in this scenario. Previously, we've done this manually on a user basis (meaning, we image a computer, remove the link after, deploy). However, re-imaging
every computer in the company is not option, as we simply don't have the 1) time and 2) personnel to accomplish this task.
We're using Windows 7 Professional x64 and will be using Desktop Central ManageEngine to deploy the the upgrade. We've tested and it looks good - we can push the prerequisite patches and the new executable without any issue...save the fact that none of my
scripts have been able to successfully remove the 64-bit IE 11 shortcut.
Has anyone ever been in this situation before? If so, any suggestions?
Thanks!
Alex

This is petty, but it's driving me nuts. A very short drive. I know I need to find iTunes.exe, but I cannot find anything but "iTunes" in Programs. Where is the .exe part?

Answer:Move iTunes icon from taskbar to start menu

Hi,
If iTunes is open and on your taskbar the exe is already open,
There are a few ways to add it to the start menu programs list,
One simple one is to drag the taskbar listing/ icon on top of the start button and pause for a moment until the start menu list appears, "do not drop yet"
Then drag it up to where you want it to be waiting for a horizontal line to appear and release the drag,
See if that helps,
Cheers.

I have a situation where a program shows on "All Programs" but not in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs in Explorer. How can I see that shortcut or whatever in Explorer?

Also, on C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs there appear items (files, shortcuts, whatever) of the same name. What's going on here?

Hi all,

Past items in Taskbar.

There are many leftover items of software that I used to have before in this section. For one reason or another they're still showing up as past items, although I removed that software a long time ago in the Add/Remove Programs. Do these items interfere with the speed of starting up the computer? I like to have my 'puter as clean as possible.

I would like to remove them if possible but can't find a way to do it.

1. Can they be removed?
2. If so, HOW?

Windows XP Home.

Thank you!

Answer:Taskbar and Start Menu Properties (past items in Taskbar)

Hi oma

Yes you can remove these as they are not automatically removed when software is removed, no they dont hamper the startup process, but I personally like to remove them as I like things tidy, just need a simple button to do this proces automatically and one thing I have suggested to MSFT to add.

Open Regedit ( goto Start > Run and type regedit and hit enter )
Locate the registry key location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify and right click the folder and choose Export ( this will backup that location for you )

then Delete the two values mentioned in bold ( agian right click each of them and choose delete ) IconStreams and PastIconsStream once deleted hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and look for explorer.exe in the Processes Tab and click it and choose End Process ( at this point it is perfectly normal for your taskbar and all desktop icons to disapear )

Then with the Task Manager still open click the top menu option of New Task (Run...) and in the Open box type explorer and hit enter.

Then when you check the Customize Notifications they will all be gone ( apart from some running ones ) best bet is to restore all your actual running tray processes is to re-boot.

Note for Vista users only this is slightly different as below.

Open Regedit ( goto Start > and in Start Search box type regedit and hit enter )
Locate the registry key location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Micros... Read more

Hello all,
So about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened. My question is. 1) is there another way to fix those two issues besides creating a new profile? and 2) What could be the cause of this happening twice in a month. Would a reformat fix it or is it a hardware issue?

ADD: I forgot to mention my outlook email profiles are gone too. Those somehow got erased as well.

Answer:Why is my start menu tab missing in taskbar and menu properties in window in Win 10?

This was removed some time around build 10041. All of the options that were on that tab are now either integrated into the Personalization section of the Settings app or are no longer available since they refer to UI elements and functionality that has been changed since then.

I think the only thing that will work here is a registry hack.

By default if you set the start menu properties to display "favorites" it does so by a menu. It does not give you a choice to display this as a link or a menu like it does for other folders.

Is there a way to fix this?

Answer:Display Favorites as a link not a menu in Start Menu

Drag it on to the start menu ( left hand pane) and pin it and it will open up in a new window when clicked.

Sorry i know its not what you want but its the only option i know.

I have a client that has laptop with windows 7 Pro. He had a faulty network card, so I have added a new, usb network card. That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now. Any thoughts? I would appreciate it. I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.

Theres also settings in the performance options that can affect the ability to pin things to the taskbar at least. Have you ran a sfc/scannow on this machine?

Does anyone know where I can re-activate this?

Hello,

I notice that in Windows 7, when you right click a pinned program to the taskbar, the menu to select options is many pixels away from the program. In previous versions of Windows, the 'Close' function in the menu was a single pixel away from the cursor when you clicked, so you could close programs quickly. Now, in 7, I always have to move my mouse so far away to click the close option. Is there any way to change this?

Example (what all menus used to look like):

Hello Jake, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Is the folder that you added to the Start menu a shortcut to a folder or an actual New Folder? Folder shortcuts will not expand in the Start menu. They will only open in a new window.

When I start up my computer, my Steam starts up, then I manually start Chrome. Chrome comes up fine, Steam does too, but when I try to right click on Steam and click friends, all it does is create another steam process running at 100-108 K. Then if I close Chrome and try to reopen it, it will do the same. This happens with EVERY program after I start up. There's a 5 second window where I can open programs without issue, then after that it will only start 108 K copies of them. It takes me around 30 restarts just to get it working properly, if not more.

Answer:Url Link In Start Menu?

Make the browser page take only a portion of the screen so you can drag the url to your desktop. That will create an icon on your desktop for the page.

Drag that icon to the word "start" and keep holding the mouse button down while the menu opens, and drag the icon to wherever you want it to reside.

Clicking on that icon in the menu will then open the browser and direct it to the page that was on it when you created the icon.

Is that what you meant?

Hi

Wonder if anyone can advise. I stupidly got Windows Diagnostics malware on my PC. Thankfully managed to catch it before it did too much damage. However, after getting rid of it I appear to have a problem accessng my task manager and All Users Start Menu Icons.

I have managed to re-enable the task manager via the registry but I'm still unable to get the All Users Start Menu displaying via Start --> All Programs. The Start Menu for the Current User displays OK.

What appears to be the problem is that access to the All Users Start Menu folder under Documents and Settings is disabled somehow as all Subfolders and icons are 'greyed out'. or maybe because its calssed as a system folder. If I check the security tab for the folder all users, eg Administrator, Power Users, User, etc have the permissions I would expect but they too are greyed out. The ironic thing is if I use windows explorer I can access these folders and run the programs.

So at a bit of a loss to know how to re-enable these any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

I just got a netbook with windows 7 and am trying to set up accounts.
Basically, what I want to do is make it so that installed programs are instanced between users.
If I want X program to run when I log in (administrator), I don't want that program to run when any other users log in.
If I install a program (as admin under admin account), say Steam for example, I don't want that to show up in the start menu under other users, or to start on login for other users.

Is this possible?

Answer:W7; how to seperate start menu between users

Possible yes. For a program to automatically start you can create a scheduled task (see here http://www.associatedcontent.com/art...scheduler.html) and set it to run on login.

For restricted programs, just use Windows 7 Parental Controls (very good how-to here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/10524...-in-windows-7/)

Hello:

I'm using XP Pro SP3 and am creating a master image to deploy to over 100 computers.

1) During testing found that the start/search/for files or folders does nothing when clicked on by either a domain user or local user.
2) Search works fine from start menu with Domain admins or local admins.
3) Search works for users when opening 'My Computer' and clicking on the search button there.
4) Because search does work in 'My Computer', I thought a workaround would be to remove the search from the start menu using local group policy, but when I did this, then search no longer worked in 'My Computer'!!

Things I've done to try and fix this:

-removing the local user's local profile and having it rebuilt.
-copying the administrator's local profile to the users profile.
-restoring the operating system to default security settings using 'secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /dbsecsetup.sdb /verbose'
-error checking C: drive with automatic fix and scan/recover bad sectors.
-re-installing srchasst.inf and re-registering search service service by using regsvr32 /i on srchui.dll, urlmon, jscript.
-searched the web and other forums.

When I add the local user to the administrators group then start/search and rightclick start/search works, and brings up the start menu as its default search path. When I remove the user from the administrators group it goes back to not working again.

Answer:start menu search will not run for users.

I have a problem with my search function. It can't be a microsoft problem, I've already searched within their advises. That was like a one of those phone calls you make that no matter what number they tell you to push it sends you on a loop. then hangs up on you. grrr.
The search button is right above RUN in my start programs menu. I click on it and nothing happens except that it freezes up all on it's own. Not to mention half my open windows.

And get this, I can no longer double click anything I have to right click and hit open on every file and folder. If I double click the search feature opens! Then it freezes.

You see? A loop.

I know the double clicking thing don't work because when I deleted winrar ALL my file extensions changed. To this day they still ain't right.

But I don't know why the search does what it does. I am assuming it could be that "someone" did some configuring in the registry so that I wouldn't be able to use it and find something I shouldn't have "accidentally".

I can take a snapshot of the values and dword(whatever that means) for you so you could see if it is proper or not.

Thanks

We both have Windows 7 and on mine (a few months old), I have both the large buttons on the taskbar at the button in addition to smaller icons to the left of them. She does not have to have the small buttons (Big ones are easy to setup) however, when she clicks on her Internet Explorer (and other programs she has pinned like Word, Excel, etc.) button at the bottom, it won't open up multiple sessions. Whereas on mine, I can click on the small IE button to the left and get as many sessions as I want.

Ok I have found something else on the web and tried it but does not fix everything

I right-clicked the bottom of my screen and now I have desktop toolbar and the start menu. But I can find no option to show the running tasks or windows if you prefer.

Edit: I am logged in to a secondary account right now as this one I have minimal success. My primary account I can not bring up taskbar at all!

This is account I have to right click bottom of screen and check something and it appears although it does not show tasks that are running.

Also when I log into my primary account(with no start menu or taskbar) I can hit windows+L and when I select another account it brings me right back to account selection and only one I can select successfully is the primary one.

To access my secondary login I needed to restart my computer and go straight there!

So now when I hover over the music in the start menu it shows a long list of MP3?s which I don?t mind.

The thing that is annoying is that if I click the Music link it doesn?t go to the folder like the others in the start menu i.e. Document & Pictures. I have to right click then click open.

I bet the first thing you think is what a lazy bas!$rd lol? It?s Just weird the fact it doesn?t work the same way as the other links in the start menu.

Another thing I would like to do is rename the Music link if that is possible?

Answer:Music Link in start menu

Hi Soulfinger,

You might consider restoring the default location for the C:\Users\(username)\Music folder and just create a shortcut to the music folder on the D drive and place it in the C:\Users\(username)\Music folder. This way you do not have the extremely long list, and the D drive folder opens in a separate windows when you click on the shortcut. Plus, you can name the shortcut anything.

I noticed that some users folders will open in a separate window when you click on them while others will have to be right clicked, but they all still display as a menu from the Start menu main Username folder. I suppose it's a quirk considering you can choose to have them display as a link or menu in the Start menu Customize options.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have looked through the forum and didn't see anything that might help. I'm not gonna ask how to make the start menu link either windows mail or live mail. I want to know how to make the link use Firefox (and not Explorer which I don't use) when it opens up a browser to connect to mail??????

Firefox is set as my default browser but apparently the link bypasses the default browser choice and automatically uses Explorer

On a second note. My explorer will not run in the protected mode even after I go through and change all the settings to enable protected mode it always says "protected mode - off" in the bar at the bottom when running. any ideas?

Hello Squa190, welcome to Vista forums!

You have to have UAC enabled to run in "Protected Mode" in IE.

The problem: All the shortcuts from “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs” have disappeared from my start menu. The ones from C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\Programs are still shown.

I have spent the weekend trying to fix this, to no avail, so hopefully someone can give me some new ideas.

I’m running XP SP3 on a Toshiba laptop. I can’t be sure exactly when this happened, but I noticed it on Friday, and I am 100% certain this problem did not exist the previous weekend. In that period of time the only software installs were an update for Keepass and an update for Mathcad. It is possible that something else notified me an update was available and I just installed it without thinking about it, but if so it would only be something like Java or Adobe flash.

If I go to “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs” the shortcuts are all there, and they are not hidden, they just don’t appear on the start menu.

The obvious way to fix this was to just roll back to a recent restore point where the problem does not exist. Unfortunately, I could not get any restore point to work, even when doing the restore entirely in safe mode (i.e. start the restore in safe mode, and finish it in safe mode). After a lot of messing around I came to the conclusion that the restore point cache was corrupted. I confirmed that by turning System Restore off and back on to clear the c... Read more

I'm curious how many Windows 8 supporters/proponents use a Start Menu.

Answer:Windows 8 Users - Do You Use a Start Menu Replacement?

I said no. I like Modern UI. My wife hates it, so she uses Start Menu 8. At work, we put a different one. It does seem that a lot of people are always asking me what one to use, how to get Start menu back, etc.. I feel like an outcast being one of the few people that actually prefer the Modern UI on Windows 8.

I'm configuring Windows 7 Enterprise for my office. I've gone through and installed all the programs. I then do the deal where I log in locally and copy my profile and make it the Default profile.

Anyway, when I log in using my profile (Domain Admin) no problems!
When i log in as a typical user (without admin rights) I don't see anything on the left side of the start menu (recent programs). I open Word, Excel, etc. but nothing is ever added to the recent\favorite program list.

I'm guessing it's a permissions issue but I can't seem to figure it out. Can someone help me out? Thanks!

Have a look at the answer given by Compumech on page 1 of this link :

According to the replier, the key is to cut the programs down to 70.
Apparently it works for a few users in that thread. Please continue reading past page 1.

I work at a university with computer labs. I am wanting to deploy Windows 8 in my labs. The problem is that it isn't familiar to the average person. I would like to place common tiles on the Metro Start for all users. This is a domain environment. It is simple to place these apps on the desktop for all users, but that does not serve the purpose; being that most users probably won't even figure out how to navigate to the desktop. I have already found out how to place these apps for all users on the "All Apps" page, but not the Start page.

Thank You

Everything I have installed on the desktop has placed a tile/icon on the start screen.

Working with XP Pro here.

I used to be pretty much the only user of my PC ... but I will have some guests around for awhile, so I would like to set up other user accts.

I want to be the only user that has access to ALL programs.(my user acct already has admin privileges). I just want the basics for anyone else.

Other than going thru a tedious cut-copy-paste, drag/drop project between the "All Users" folder & each users folder .....

Is there a simpler way to accomplish this ?.

Better yet ... is there a bigger picture so to speak, that I should be looking into, that would accomplish this & provide peace of mind in other areas as well, such as limit access to files & folders elsewhere ?.

Doing something in Administrative Tools perhaps ?.

I would think having Pro vs Home would offer some advantage in this situation, but I'm not sure(that's why I'm asking).

The easier the better ... even if it requires a 3rd party program

Thanks for the help.

Answer:Doc & Settings - Users & Start Menu Items

I don't have XP pro but with what I know you can:
Create a limited account
Turn off its write permissions to folders like WINDOWS and Program Files and read permissions to other users.
Open Start menu folder and delete shortcuts
And to stop them changing system settings log onto that account and lock it up with Group Policy Editor - Start->Run->gpedit.msc (wish I had that in home edition lol)
Tweak it all to your liking.

Be careful not to change system wide restrictions in the group policy editor.

Dear friends:
I am revisiting this top approx 1-1/2 years later, still searching for resolution. My teenage son attempted to download a codec via internet for gaming on a Windows XP PC, and the results are as follows: the taskbar and start menu have disappeared; internet explorer flashes open for a millisecond, then closes; I cannot copy files to or from a jump drive plugged into any available USB port.
Today, if I take dds.scr over to that computer on my ScanCruzer 4GB jump drive, and click to open, it, too, simply flashes open for a moment, then closes.
I'm also having trouble opening RootRepeal.exe from the jump drive, on the stricken computer - appears to be hanging up (endless hourglass) and I have now seen a "virtual memory too low" message.
When last discussed here, we were trying to figure out why I cannot move files to or from a jump drive - as, earlier in the process, I was able to copy off at least three different HijackThis logs, which I still have copies of, and would be able to post in a follow-up to this topic.
I also have a Windows XP disk ... but, don't want to reinstall just yet, as all my photo, music, etc., files on the XP computer are still "good" and have not been affected by the malware / virus. If I could download all of those files to a jump drive, I might be willing to simply reinstall XP.
Hoping someone can help ...
Connectigreg

Hello kleopat, Since you are badly infected, please run the following scans. Disable your antivirus program and go here http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). Answer:Taskbar and start menu missing?

Not sure I can help, but you might want to try a few things. If the task bar/start button is minimized, you should be able to drag it up again by putting you mouse pointer at the very bottom of your screen. If the bar is just pulled down, you should get an arrow when you move over the minimized window.

Another possibility is that you hit f11 in IE and maximized the IE window. If this is the case, hitting f11 again should return things to normal.

(c) "paste" is disabled (greyed out) at the right-click menu, which means copy-paste is not working (chrome is the default browser). (d) the sole user name was found changed/ replaced by "699F01E77B5046D", and now i have no access to the user profile. At the "User Accounts", there're two tabs- "Back" and "Home"; i clicked and clicked at both but nothing happened. however, the computer can still be opened and shutdown. It's windows XP.

I have a PC running XP Professional. I wanted to delete some files to free up space but accidentally deleted a group of files that should have been compressed.

Since that time, I can not see my desktop icons but can see the background picture. I can not see the start menu or taskbar and right click does not work.

At first internet explorer did not work - I used netscape to access the internet - finally I was able to reinstall internet explorer and it works now. I have tried operating in safe mode but get a black screen only.

Appreciate your comments. I am new to the site, joined today - hope I'm doing this right because I am totally lost when it comes to computers.

Answer:No Desktop or Start Menu or Taskbar

Hello!
What I can do is give you some suggestions.

Try rebooting. What I mean is shutting down the comp, then turning the power button on, then clicking f8, and choosing the simple reboot.

Try to start the system from the last...how do you say it...the last "autosaved" mode. Because hopefully you did not delete the documents permanently. Computer is a machine, after all.

Bad case...but good luck, anyway.

I sure would appreciate if someone would help. Something I did a few days ago has caused my start menu and taskbar to disappear and for the the life of me I can't realize what I need to do. I am running Vista. Keep in mind I have NOTHING at the bottom of the screen, so I can not turncomputer off, I cannot click in an empty space. I did go into startup and task bar properties and "lock toolbar" is unchecked. I know I should be able to fix this but I think I am "brain dead"

Answer:Solved: start up menu and taskbar gone

here is a suggestion from another forum that worked for the poster ...

When you boot and see the black screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL. Select the Task
Manager from the menu.

In the Task Manager, go to File/New. Type explorer.exe and click OK.

Does this cause the Desktop and TaskBar to appear?

Hi,

I'm having trouble trying to get back my Start menu and Taskbar on my Desktop. Here's what happened that led to their disappearance:

Last night, I installed the beta nVIDIA 30.30 detonator drivers. It ran fine on all of my other games until it messed up on Deus Ex. (The preferred game to test new drivers for me.) So, I uninstalled it through Control Panel's Add/Remove option. When the computer restarted, I just got a blank screen. So I brought in another video card (TNT2 M64) from my older computer and plugged it in my PCI slot. When I could see again, I took the original CD from when I bought my PNY GF4 Ti-4200 and installed the 28.32's. Then, I shut down the computer, plugged the monitor cord back into the GF4 and booted.

When WinXP loaded, I could see my desktop and desktop items but the Start Menu and the Taskbar were no where to be found. I'm not sure what this calls for. I hope I don't have to re-install my OS b/c I've never done it before.

Help would be appreciated.

Also the little pop-up menu in My Documents, in the Start Menu - where shortcuts are listed to the documents you recently used/opened - is gone, and the controls that would normally bring it back (Start Menu Properties->Start Menu tab->Customize->Advanced tab) are literally missing from that window.

Is there something I need to tinker with in the registry?

Answer:Help w/taskbar clock and start menu?

For the clock:

Switch to 'classic' view on Control Panel and open up Regional and Language options. Click Customize.

Then, under Time, change time format from HH:mm:ss to 'h:mm:ss tt'. Click OK, then again. Glance down at your notification bar, and you'll see the twelve hour time!

Three weeks ago I upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro. Everything went well and I was a happy camper until two days ago. Suddenly the start menu was gone. The icon is still there but when I click on it, it opens the start menu for a split second and then it's gone. The action center wont open either

I have tried...

(1) changing user accounts. But it won't let me because I cannot add another user (nothing happens).
(2) tried the powershell trick, running as admin and pasting in Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
(3) a system restore. There were no restore points unfortunately.
(4) tried safe mode but still no dice.

I don't know if this has been caused by the powershell trick or that it was already there when my start menu dispappeared, but it now seems that my taskbar has become irrepsonsive (right clicking does not do anything, not even a contextual menu and the system tray icons do not respond to clicking).

To make matters worse (and I don't know whether it is related), it seems that my wifi has gone down as well. I cannot connect to the internet anymore. DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET Chrome says. Ipconfig reveals that "media is disconnected". No default gateway is specified (other devices have no problem connecting to my router).

I not looking forward to do a clean install, as this will mean that I have to first install Windo... Read more

Answer:Start menu gone, taskbar irresponsive

This seems to be a common problem for I am also experiencing the same.

To add, launching certain Windows applications from the taskbar takes forever. Example: right clicking on the start button and choosing File Explorer takes 14+ seconds to launch. However, double clicking a folder on my desktop launches instantly! Task Manager takes 20 seconds to launch!!

You can try this to create a new local user.

Right click on the start button and choose ?Computer Management?. Under ?Local User and Groups? click the ?Users? Icon. Right click in the field to the right and ?New User?.

With the new local account I created everything works fine.

I?ve tried every solution described here with no success with the exception of a Refresh for I would rather not have to re install all my programs.

I'm experiencing some difficulties with clicking stuff in my Start Menu. I can click on my Start menu, and I can highlight and select things in there as well, but when I place my cursor over a sub-menu, such as All Programs, the next sub-menu will open, but I cannot highlight anything in there, and the entire taskbar freezes as well. I can click on the desktop or anywhere else to close the start menu though, but I cannot select anything inside the All Programs sub-menu.

Any ideas?

I was wondering if there was a way too make the taskbar look like vista's bar and make the start menu a different color, maybe even a gradient (if possible)? I have attached an image of what I would like to accomplish.

Answer:Change Taskbar and start menu look

possible, using 3rd party themes with uxtheme patched and modified explorer.exe for the startmenu icon.

1. Taskbar/Start menu freezes. Navigating through the start menu options eventually crashes/freezes it.

2. When taskbar frozen the Desktop icons are still active and I can open those. I can also open MyDocuments folder

3. Although I can open MyDocuments folder and navigate in there, once I try to open MyComputer folder it freezes.

4. Can't shutdown computer because Start menu frozen; Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work - only puts the task icon in the tray but can't open it. Alt-F4 doesn't close it either. have to hold the on/off switch to shut down.

I've tried:
1. sfc /scannow (no results)
2. changed hard drive (no change)
3. antivirus, spybot, adaware all good.

I'm going to update the PSU unless someone has a better idea.

Here's computer specs:

Thanks for your help!!

Answer:Taskbar/Start Menu Freezes

have you downloaded anything at all recently, particularly just before the problem occurred? Will the computer allow you to download anything now, if so try C Cleaner. Can you start in safe mode, if so do the same problems occur. Also do you have a copy of Hijack This? If you are able to run a HJT scan paste it in to the relevant forum on this site just to be sure you have no malware problems, in fact check that forum first because they prefer you to do HJT and other scans and post the results all together.

My Start Menu and task bar are frozen. I can open Firefox/Internet Explorer but anything else including the start menu, cortana/search, windows store, etc are frozen and if I click, nothing happens.
I can't access Settings either, so I can't access window update.
How do I fix this?

Answer:Start Menu & Taskbar Frozen, how can I fix it?

Google/bing this :) there is a solution that requires you to run powershell..
Another solution which will help with the windows update bit, is to create a new user account (control panel), give it admin rights and then log into that one :) from there you'll be able to update

Hi,
I recently upgraded my desktop to Windows 10, but have encountered a few problems that I hope you could help me out with.
The taskbar is not working as intended - I can use it to switch between open programs and launch any pinned programs, but right-clicking them does not work. Left-clicking does not work on the running services? located in the bottom right corner, however right-clicking here does.
The start menu does not work either, clicking the windows key results in absolutely nothing. Manually clicking the windows key in the bottom left corner likewise results in nothing.
Finally the Start-up tab in the Task Manager is blank, and lists BIOS-time to be 0 seconds.
Hope you can help me out!

Normal booting

Hello. We have Windows Vista. No icons on the desktop. No taskbar. No Start menu. Can't right click. But I can ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager. This is in normal booting.

Safe mode w/ networking

I tried "safe mode with networking". Then choose a user. All the icons are on the desktop. Taskbar and Start menu is available.

I can right click.

I can surf the internet. I downloaded and installed malwarebytes and ran a full scan. No infection or anything.

I downloaded and installed ccleaner and then ran "cleaner" and "registry". I am now uninstalling a lot of games in "tools".

I also did "system restore". I chose "recommended restore".

Still no icons, taskbar, and start menu in normal booting.

Everyting is done in "safe mode with networking" since I cannot do anything in normal booting. Please help.

Answer:No icons, taskbar, & start menu.

Welcome
To start lets try with clean boot. If you work with safe mode, maybe you will work with clean boot and then we can determine the cause

Anybody have any ideas- I'm at my wit's end ( which, I grant you, isn't a far trip)

Do you just have the normal Windows 7 installation, or are you using other programs,( third party applications), as well?

Some Malware programs can cause various strange behaviour. Download this;

Malwarebytes

And run it. Tell us what it says.

Answer:No start menu or taskbar in windows xp

Get out your xp install cd and search it for Explorer.exe find and replace your explorer.exe inside windows folder. YOu may have to do this in safe mode.

Or you can run sfc /scanow form the run prompt, also you need a xp install cd for this as well

Sounds like you explorer file is messed up this is why I made those suggestions

When i turn on my computer it completely skips over the start menu and immediately goes to where the desktop should be. Instead of my background though, the whole desktop is just black. The tool bar and the side panel will not open. I have been able to find and run most of the programs i use everyday like Skype and the internet through running them with task manager. Please help me fix this problem as soon as possible, thank you!

I've just upgraded to win 10. Is there a way to make the taskbar and startmenu light gray and low contrast?

I enabled "Show color on..." and added my own light grays to the palette with WinAeroTweaker. The chosen colors show up in window title bars but have no effect on taskbar/start menu. It seems that colors used there are are clamped to #808080-ish.

Answer:Bright start menu and taskbar

I am looking for the same thing. The color selection does not contain a light gray. Great for a smart phone or tablet, but not desktop/laptop. I don't remember how I got it on Win 8/8.1 !!

Within "Taskbar & Start Menu Properties" under "Customize Notifications" I have many icons refering to programmes that I have installed and later correctly uninstalled. Admittedly they do not show on my taskbar due to them being either "Hide when inactive" or "Always Hide"I cannot find how to delete these remaining links to non-existing programmes?

I've tried to fix this from sites and advice on the internet, but it keeps happening. I can't find a topic here on this, so I apologize if I'm posting something I shouldn't be.

Thanks for any direction you can send me in.

Running Windows XP Pro. I have no icons, no start menu and no taskbar. The only way I can run any program is to ctrl-alt-del and start a new task and I can run Iexlporer and get on the internet. However, I try and run Regedit, it comes up for a second and closes. I've ran Housecall, Virus Scan, and Regedit in Safe Mode but have found nothing. I've been getting "Project1, It's Time" popup and sometimes I get the RPC 55 second countdown to shutdown as well. I figure this must be something new or these virus programs are not finding my problem.
Any Ideas?
