How do I use custom folder icon but still get file thumbnails

Question: How do I use custom folder icon but still get file thumbnails

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!

Has anyone found a way yet to overcome this in windows 7?

Sam.

Preferred Solution: How do I use custom folder icon but still get file thumbnails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello.

I had a weird problem with my folder icons. The normal folders (ones without thumbnails) appear the normal yellow photo that is the default. However, the folders with thumbnails are a different icon of gray and white. For some reason, I cannot change the icon of the folders with thumbnails back to the default, yellow folders. Can anyone help with this? I have manually tried to change it back by "Right clicking, Properties, Customize" and choosing the yellow default folder, but it isn't working.

Hi, I'm using Windows 8.1 x64.

In the MUSIC folder I have 1 folder for each artist. In each Artist folder I have 1 folder for each Album. And in each Album folder I have all the songs, with the cover art embedded in them, in every single .mp3 I have.

In folder options I've set folders to show thumbnails, not icon. So, each Album folder's icon is the album art of the .mp3 files it has inside. BUT in the MUSIC folder, all the Artist folders don't show the album arts they have inside. Their icon is not a folder's icon neither, it's like thumbnails of folders:
And I'd like them to show the thumbnails of the albums they have inside. Well, the maximum amount of images that a folder icon can show is 2, so if I have more than 1 album in an Artist folder, then the icon should be 2 random thumbnails (of 2 albums).

An example here:

I put a song (with embedded cover art) in the desktop. The archive's icon is the cover art.

Now I create a NEW FOLDER (the icon is a default folder icon) called "Album". I put there the .mp3 file. Now, the "Album" folder's icon is the cover art of the .mp3 file.

Then I create ANOTHER new folder called "Artist" (default folder icon), and I put there the "Album" folder. And here, the "Artist" folder's icon is NOT the cover art, but the icon of the image above, and I want it to show the cover art.

Notice that all album's folders have only .mp3 files, not hidden images like "folder.jpg" or anyth... Read more

Hi there?

How can I do this, that a "Mother" folder's icon shows cover arts embedded in the "Son" folder's icon?

-Folder A (rare folder's icon, image in the first post) contains:
--Folder B (folder's icon is the cover art of the files it has) contains:
---mp3 files with embedded cover art

I want A folder's icon to be the same as B's.

Hi @michaelukz, welcome to tenforums.com!

You'll need to create a shortcut of the folder and apply a custom .ico (icon) file to it for the representing image.

How (if possible) can I assign a custom icon to a folder so that it will remain that folder's icon no matter where on the computer I move it to, even if I copy it to another drive (ext., flash, cd, etc.) or computer.

thnx - and sorry if addressed elsewhere, pleas provide link.

Answer:Permanent Custom Folder Icon?

Make a new folder on the desktop:

Open notepad and copy and paste this:

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
IconFile=Folder.ico
IconIndex=0

Save as desktop.ini inside the folder you are changing(look at screenshot)

Put a icon in the folder and name it:

Folder.ico

Then open Command Prompt and type:

attrib +s C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Desktop\FOLDER YOU ARE CHANGING
Press enter
Close Command Prompt

This only works if you move and paste the folder not if you copy and paste.

I needed to refresh my thumb drive for it to show.

I created a new folder on the desktop and I can't change its icon to a one I downloaded. selecting the icon from the stock list (shell32.dll) works fine though. I tried with another folder in different location, still no luck. however, when I created a shortcut to the folder I placed on the desktop, I can change its icon to the custom one just fine. can anyone help me? I just wanna have a folder with a blank icon

edit: I fixed the issue. turns out Windows didn't like the fact that there was an "ą" letter in the icon path.

Answer:I can't change folder icon to a custom one

An organisation called "Shedko" has a programme Shedko Folderico. It was originally for windows 7 and I used it on that, however it has worked for me on Win 8, win8.1 and now it works on 10.

You can integrate into right click menu to click on any folder to change the icon to your choice. I have a folder packed with various icons and have linked it to that.
It has never given me any problems although icons I use for Photos/music/videos in my user folder usually get reverted to default with MS updates. So I have to change them to my liking again
Give it a try.

I made a Custom Music Icon that is tied to Windows Media Player, but every few minutes it reverts back to its default icon... How can I stop this????

Here is what happens exactly;

I change the Icon to my Custom Icon Via Properties>Customize>Change Icon>Browse

I choose my custom icon and hit Apply, it then changes to my custom icon.

a few minutes or seconds later it changes back to the default Folder icon.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated! thank you.

Answer:Custom Music Folder Icon Reverts Help Please

Welcome to Seven Forums, Revenant

May I ask you a few questions like
1. Are you changing the Music folder in the libraries .... or a folder containing music situated in any other location ?
2. Are you trying to change the music file icon of windows media player ?

My answers ....
1. If you want to change the Music library icon, Follow the tutorial Libraries Icons - Change . But if it is any other folder , you cannot change only one folder icon as long as the folder thumbnail preview is enabled , and you are to disable the thumbnail preview . For details, read Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable .

2. If you want to change the music file icon, follow the tutorial File Extension Icon - Change Default Icon .

It is better to Icon Cache - Rebuild after any alteration in the icons .

I have a movie archive. Each film and its poster image are in a different folder. So there are a lot of folders. Each folder has its image in it as thumbnail.Anyway, here is my problem:I want to copy all folder thumbnails, folder names and folder sizes to a file, for instance word, excel, image files...I know that it can performed with printscreen key, and paste a file. But, the folder window can not show all folders in a screen. Think that there are 1000 movie folders. We can see only first 30 folders of them in a screen.I need to print-screen all of them in one time, and paste it to a file.Or, get thumbnails, folder names and sizes as a list with a program. What do you offer me about it?Thanks in advance.Regards...

Yilmaz Ekici, never tried it so dunno for sure, but seems to me like you simply need to hilite the desired selections and 'copy to folder'. Multiple copies may take some time. What if you were to create a shortcut and put all the shortcuts in the same folder instead?HTH.Ed in Texas.

Hi,
I have the habit of customizing folders' icon for easier management and nicer look, when needed. When copying a folder or many folders/subfolders with Microsoft Explorer, no matter where the destination is, the customized icons are showing up properly rather than the standard yellow folder icon.
I started using a synchronization application as I need to replicate some data on different devices/places and the synchronization should be two way so that no matter where I work and what I do I have a perfect mirror of the data.
Sadly, I noticed that any kind of software, even xcopy (from MS-DOS), fail to replicate properly the customized icons. So, I end up with plain standard folders on target path.

I read this article on this forum but it does not apply (see below). I also opened a new support question on social.technet.microsoft.com (it is in Italian) but nobody seems to answer with a solution.

The goal is to be able to replicate/reproduce custom folder's icons without any manual interaction exactly as if I would do this via Explorer. It is not acceptable that a user has to manually modify what was synchronized having to go through thousands of folders...

I am trying to understand what does Explorer do that makes it capable to reproduce the correct icon when, instead, any other software fails and how to apply the solution to third party software.

Please anyone can kindly help?
Thank you

HELLO GUYS!
I'm having problems when I try to customize my folder icons on VISTA. The icons I usually make is 256x256 px size and when I apply it to my desired folders, the size of the icons is always 32x32 px. When I try to appear it on large icons view, it's still on 32x32 px. It's so frustrating.

What is the best way to....
- Make a file that users can download which has a custom icon and takes them to the website of my choice?

Currently,
I have a shortcut on my desktop that points to a website of which I have assigned a custom icon (.ico file) and everything looks and works great on my computer. The customer icon is not a Windows default .ico file

I save the file to SharePoint 2010 and when users download the file (shortcut.url) they don't get the custom icon, just a shortcut with a missing icon image.

Answer:Download Shortcut.url File = Lose the Custom Icon for It?

Hello Poagman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's normal for a referenced custom icon on your PC to not be included with the shortcut like this.

About all you can do is to also include the icon with the shortcut so that they can save the icon where they like on their PC, then change the shortcut's icon to target the icon's location on their PC.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

I just downloaded all of the Google Web Fonts and they were each downloaded into their respected folders, so instead of clicking on folder after folder and right clicking after right clicking and finally installing each and every font;

How can I create a command prompt (batch) file so the prompt can search the main folder where all the font folders are, grab any and all TrueType Font files and move or copy them into another single folder?

Answer:Custom batch file that copies font files to another folder?

It seems like it would be easier to search by the TTF file extension.

Question: Custom Thumbnails

hello everyone
is it possible to assign a custom thumbnail to a file .... just like a album art is assigned to a music file....
i am asking this all the videos which i have in .avi, .wmv, .mpeg...... can i assign a specific image file to be displayed as cover of these videos

Answer:Custom Thumbnails

I don't think you can at the file level, just at the folder level. So if I want that level of customization I put each video in its own folder and customize the folder. If there's a better way I don't know about it.

Windows XP: Does anyone know how to set a custom .jpg thumbnail to iso files?

Answer:Custom thumbnails?

You'll need to convert your jpg to an icon format.

From any explorer window, go to the Tools menu, Folder options, File Types, locate ISO from the list, Advanced, Change icon. You also might need to clear your shell icon cache.

I?m using Windows 10 Home V.1607 OS Build 14393.1593. I recently installed Boxcryptor but later decided against it and uninstalled it, but I notice that a Boxcryptor icon is still shown in File Explorer (the 1st item after Desktop) in the Navigation Pane. It also appears in the file details pane. It doesn?t show on the computer desktop. While it?s not causing any problems I?m aware of it it?s irritating to continually see it there when I know I?ve uninstalled the program.

When I right-click the icon there?s no option to delete it. Left-clicking tells me ?X: is unavailable. Etc etc. If the location still can?t be found, it might have been moved or deleted.? The Properties box gives the location as X. It shows 0 bytes. What makes it a bit annoying is that I have a USB thumb drive which is designated ?X? so when that?s plugged in the files on it also appear in the Boxcryptor entry.

I?ve run CClean and Glary Utilities Registry Repair without success. The program doesn?t appear in Windows Control Panel?s Programs & Features, or when I run Revo Uninstaller.

Answer:Undeletable Folder Icon in File Explorer

Hi, suggest you try this - in this order. Running Revo after uninstalling a program is only useful if it Forced Uninstall option can browse to a remaining exe file belonging to that program.
a. Reinstall the program (yes, seems counter-intuitive)
b. Run Revo uninstaller - I guess that's what you have.
(As the free version does not monitor program installation that option isn't available to you)
c. Select your program in Revo
d. Click the Uninstall button in Revo

Follow and accept all prompts.
The normal uninstaller will run, then scans for leftovers.

Report the result. Good luck.

Hello everyone.

I'm having some problems with my computer and I was hoping someone would be able to help me out :<

I have folders on my computer which I store lots of images in for artwork resources.

I don't know why it happens, perhaps after I add a new image to the folder or change an existing image and save it, The folder sort of freezes/crashes, I cant click on any of the thumbnails, I cant close the folder, go to File or anything like that, Highlight anything drag nothing.

All it lets me do is minimise, maximise and scroll up and down. It wont even highlight the images/thumbnails when I click on them. I can still get into the files if I open them when I'm already in say photo shop, but I cant open them when I'm in the folder.

In the past I've had to go via Photo shop and re-save all the files from the crashed folder into a new one just so I can actually use the folders normally.

I mean it wont even let me close the folder T_T; it just crashes worse and worse every time I try and do anything until the screen freezes and then I have to re-start my computer.

Re-starting the computer and system restores do nothing the folders stay locked down. I'm actually really upset, as I lost everything from my last computer and it had photos of my mother on the hardrive, my mother has since passed away and they where all I had left. I have a few left on this new computer but I'm so afraid of loosing these last few I have.

If I rt click and check properties, their names still remain and are shown, but just are not visible otherwise in the regular viewing pane. Also the folder names ARE visible in the Folder menu portion of the Explorer window. File names of recently used files ARE also visible in the ?Recent Items? menu in Start.
2) The Start search function and the search function within the Explorer window view pane no longer work. The top of the Start search function pane states ?Search failed to initialize.?
3) I can not access the UAC. Early on in the infection, before it was cleared, when I logged on, I saw a ?Switch user? button (which was new), but clicking on it did nothing, and when I checked for a new account in the task manager, none was apparent.
4) Windows update no longer works and access to the update download website remains blocked but not re-directed (never was redirected)

I can access regedit and CMD via ?Help and Support? in the Start menu, but this work around doesn't work ... Read more

Answer:Icon, Folder, and File names not visible following virus infection

I have managed to fix most of the issues that my computer was having. I decided to work on the error message, "Search failed to initialize". That took me to the Microsoft instructions for fixing the search function, at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932989#LetMeFixItMyselfAlways. Basically, it instructed me to delete the current indexing and to re-index. I rebooted after that, and found that not only was the search function now working, the names of the icons, folders, and files were also now visible. Windows update also works again.

I don't know enough about computers to know why the re-indexing fixed my other problems as well, just glad it did. Hope this helps someone else.

Hi all,

I've been trying to find a way to add my own icons to libraries that I make. I have tried navigating to:

Code:
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries
And after right clicking the Library I made, I don't get an option to change the icon. Is there any way to do this? It would just be easier to tell the difference between user-created libraries if the icons could be changed, instead of only using the one default icon provided.

I've tried searching through the tutorials section, and looked through the first five pages or so of results that came up from a search here on the forums, and haven't been able to find the info I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:How to add a custom icon to a custom library?

Wasn't able to find the answer on here, but did find it here:

Libraries Icons - Change

Thought I'd share for anyone else that wants to try it.

I have finally found a way to get rid of the annoying Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Task Tray that consistently works on my little computer.

It is this batch file:
https://www.raymond.cc/blog/download/did/581/
from:
https://www.raymond.cc/blog/hide-or-...are-tray-icon/

but I now need a little help please ....
It tells me to add the batch file to the Start folder but I am flummoxed and don't have a clue how to do that.
As it is I have to run it at each start-up and the fleeting black screen with white text comes and goes before I can read it properly.

You lot have helped me so many times here I'm hoping you can this time too please

Answer:Add batch file to the Start folder? (hide Safely Remove Hardware icon)

Sounds like they want you to put in the Startup Folder at: C:\Users\"your user name"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup then leave a shortcut to it in there.

Good Luck

So I go into a folder, and all the thumbnails load up slowly. Then you expect it's built up the cache so next time you go in it's instant, right? Nope! All forgotten.

Every single time I go into a folder it's reset.

I tried deleting to rebuild the cache DB files but they were all locked out, and I can't disable automatic maintenance (which may be erasing the thumbnail cache) as the option to do so isn't available in Windows 10.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

My Video Thumbnails in Windows (File) Explorer have gone and been replaced by the generic Icon for the program I select to play the video files (VLC, GOM etc). It's happened to my AVI and MPG files on ALL my Windows 8 PC's.

The Folder Options are set to "Display file icon on thumbnails" and the Performance Options/Visual Effects are set to "Show thumbnails instead of icons".

I tried using the "Media Preview" program but it only works on about one in a hundred icons.

If it's happening on all my PC's it must be happening to others, any clue how to fix this?

Answer:Video Thumbnails are gone and replaced by Icon

Hello Bazzer, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Usually unless you are using either the Windows Photo Viewer or the default Photos app, thumbnail previews of image files may not work with the program you set as the default program even when you have thumbnail previews turned on.

To fix this, you'll need to set either program above as the default program with all of it's associations.

I have recently noticed for some reason my photo's are not showing in the thumbnail view. I have them opening on a slide show with the image preview as normal if I wish to use this and this still works. It shows the icon on each thumbnail of the image preview but not the picture of the jpg photo in the thumbnail. I have looked at the properties of the thumbnail and it says open with image preview. What should it say so that I can see the thumbnail as a picture of the photo. This use to be okay but I do not know why it has stopped showing. I have windows ME god forbid but it used to be ok. The only software I have introduced is Norton Firewall which i have tried on and off.Someone suggested to download the latest media player 9 but this is not any help as it is still the same so can anyone help please.

Not sure if this is a browser (latest Firefox) or Windows problem, so I'll describe the issue here.

All my program shortcuts are placed on the taskbar. The problem I'm about to describe and show, only occurs with the Firefox taskbar icon and its preview thumbnails. And will happen whether one or multiple tabs are on the tab bar. When hovering the cursor over FF's tab bar icon, and then hovering (and not clicking) the cursor over a tab's preview thumbnail, FF's window will now show several tiled FF's with the present thumbnails site on top. But, now clicking on that thumbnail, the site will open as a single site...with no evidence of the other apparently opened FF's. This only happens with the FF taskbar icon's thumbnail and not with any of the other icons on the bar.

Here are some captures of this odd occurrence:

Hi, I went on my computer today (it was already on, I just moved my mouse to get it out of 'sleep' mode), and the thumbnails on the icons on my desktop were rearranging themselves automatically every few seconds. For instance, video files would have the Firefox logo, TXT documents would have the WinRAR logo, RAR files would have the Avira logo, etc., and then in a few seconds it'd switch up all over again. Also my desktop background was alternating between the image I normally have as a wallpaper, and a blank black background. I started the task manager, and my computer was freezing up, and explorer.exe was taking up 50% CPU. Eventually I was able to end the process, start it up again, and return back to normal.

Has anyone ever experienced this type of glitch before? I looked on google and I didn't find anything. I really want to find out if this type of glitch has ever been reported before, because I am worried that it could be a symptom of a virus.
Thank you in advance to anyone who can help.

First , follow the tutorial Icon Cache - Rebuild , and have a disk cleanup .

If still the situation is the same , post the topic here in System Security - Windows 7 Forums . It may be a malware issue .

Question: Folder Thumbnails

Hey all,

Does anybody know why the thumbnail preview on folders just seems to pick a file at random? I have renamed my files (album pictures) Front 1.jpg, Label 1.jpg, Reverse 1.jpg, Front 2.jpg, Label 2.jpg, Reverse 2.jpg, and yet it just seems to display files randomly in the preview. I would like it to show; Front 1, Label 1, Reverse 1. As i said, it appears to be random, some folders do it in that order, some don't.

Also, if i customize the folder, picking a picture i want shown, that doesn't appear to work either.

Thanks in advance people.

Answer:Folder Thumbnails

If you pick a picture you want to show you have to name it folder and it has to be (?) a jpg file. You then only get the one image showing in the thumbnail (usually the album cover, but it could be your cat if you want!).
As to the randomness of the thumbnail view, I think the thumbnail shows the last couple of files/pictures that are placed in the folder. When you clear the thumbnail cache, well, windows makes up its own mind.

Question: Folder Thumbnails

Hi Guys,

Today I decided to spruce up the folders on my MP3 player by adding the CD covers as the thumbnail for each folder. All went well until..... disaster!!! Somehow any folder on my whole PC (not just the MP3 player) that does not have a thumbnail manually assigned to it(or assigned by it's parent program) has now got a Green Day "Bullet In The Bible" CD Cover as the Thumbnail

I'm presuming I've pressed something that has made this the default folder setting but don't want it this way. Basically unless I just want a folder icon unless a Thumbnail has been deliberatley assigned.

Anyway I can do this en masse? Or do I have to go through them all?

Thanx in advance

You could try to rebuild the icon cache with Windows TweakUI. If you don't have it you can download it here
Go to Repair and select 'Rebuild Icons'. Restart your computer.

Hi, After the recent update 1709 -- (The fall update I think) I've encounter issues with thumbnail previewer. I does not show thumbnail images but default icon instead
it wasn't my first time I've encountered this, It happened same thing on every updates. So knew I'd need to rebuild icon and thumbnail cache once again so I following this steps...

Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10 Customization Tutorials
Clear and Reset Thumbnail Cache in Windows 10 Customization Tutorials
After Creators Update 2 thumbnails cache keeps auto-deleting Solved - Windows 10 Forums

After few restart, it did not solve my issues issues, It did not rebuild cache but went for worst. Now I got I got a blank icon/thumbnails on taskbar (left of screen) and it seem to happen only on windows store app (i.e. calendar, mail, photo previewer and etc..) not the third party programs.

I also have issues with images (almost most image format) showing paper white thumbnails, instead of previewer or default icon.
I cannot fathom how this happen. I've spend hours goggling for solution, done many different methods on rebuilding icon and reboot pc 50+ times. Went through recovery and rollback version. sfc /scannow DISM. virus screening, disk cleaning and etc none of it detect my issues and its driving me nuts.
Instead of having to reset windows and reinstall many of 3rd parties program again I was hoping there are solution. Would anyone by any chance know what the issues are? Thanks in advance.

In one of the folders on my computer I have lots of sub-folders (more than 100) and the view setting for that folder is "Extra Large Icons". Each of those folders has a designated thumbnail: So in each folder I have an image with the title 'Folder'. All the thumbnails were displaying correctly for months up until today where I created a new folder and deleted a different folder that was no longer desired. Now I'm sitting with folders that are displaying the incorrect thumbnails despite the fact they each have a designated 'Folder' titled image inside. A few of them are jumbled up and it's driving me crazy.

- I tried to do an icon cache rebuild using the Disk Cleanup tool and selecting only Thumbnails.
- I even manually deleted the iconcache.db file and restarted the computer.

Neither of those have helped.
Can someone please help me?

Edited to add:

- I've also tried changing the view options in the folder to list. After that I did an icon cache rebuild. After that I restarted. When I went back in I set the view to Extra Large Icons again and I still have the same problem.

Hello to all!

It's very nice seeing such a live and active community and I'm very excited with becoming a member!

I came here looking a solution to my problem, to say the truth...
Last month I installed IconPackager 4.0.0 without ever thinking that it had no support for Windows 7.

After a lot of searching, (not a whole month) I found out that upon "restore default icons" IconPackager cannot restore the default Icons Windows 7 has.

I found this post at Stardock/Iconpackager support forum IconPackager messed windows 7 icons? Get fix here! (Modz please pin) Forum Post by Voodooguy
And said "hey, another one had this problem and fixed it!". I copied the registry values, made a .reg file, inserted the code and restarted.

After the restart, most of the files where back to normal except:
Microsoft Word 2007 Documents
and,
Windows Folder Thumbnails (the open folders that show the content of a folder)

The Windows folder thumbnails, appeared, but not properly showing the data in the middle of the open content folder, but below of the folder, and the old icon (that has been assigned with IconPackager) showing also below the wrong folder, and content.

I have attached the two (2) pictures, one for each occasion.
So for the Microsoft Word -> Assign the default Word Icon
and for the folders - > Get rid of the grey icon (the one on the very back) and assign the proper "open content folder" to show the content of every folder properly.

If you want to speed up browsing around in explorer, you might think about disabling thumbnail previews in folders.

Note that this works in Windows 7 or Vista
To make this change, click the Organize button on any folder, and choose Folder and Search Options from the menu.

Click the View tab, and then check the Always show icons, never thumbnails checkbox.

Click OK, and you’re done.

After some searching around in the forums, I understand there are a lot of problems with folder thumbnails in Windows 7.

My problems seems simple enough. I have a bunch of folders, each filled with many photos. I wanted the folders to display a thumbnail of a specific picture so I can tell whats inside immediately when I see the folders. So I right click on each folder, select properties, click on the customize tab, choose a file and hit ok. Viola, the folder now displays the correct image I want on its thumbnail.

The problem is they never seem to want to stay that way. Eventually they all revert back to the default folder thumbnails, two random pictures from inside the folder. And with so many folders I find it annoying to change them all back again and again. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out the reason they all change back, and how I could make them stay the same. Maybe it has something to do with the thumbcache or iconcache? I'm not too sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for the long ass post. Thanks.

I can't seem to remove the album art associated with my MP3 folder thumbnail on Windows explorer.

What I've tried:
1. Right click on the folder > Properties > Customize > Folder pictures > Restore Default (Thumbnail still shows the album art)
2. Tools > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders (No hidden image files)
3. Conducted a *.gif, *.jpg, *.jpeg search on my whole system (Didn't see the particular image)
4. Transferred all MP3s of the artist to another drive, refreshed (Still there)

I came across deleting individual jpegs of album art before, I just can't remember where. I think it was in WMP or something. Is there some hidden folder I should check?

Thanks in advance guys.

Answer:Album art and folder thumbnails

Tools > Folder Options > View

Uncheck "Hide Protected Operating System Files." The album art and other crap will be in the folder where your music is stored. Just be sure to recheck the "Hide Protecte..." box once you are finished so you don't accidentally delete something important.

I have a rather large (seriously large) collection of anime/manga stuff on my computer, what I used to like to do in WinXP was take a cover pic and slap it on the folder icon so that I could recognize files at-a-glance..

Now the thing is, and I had this problem in Windows Vista also, by the time I get to the couple hundredth file thumbnail, Windows 7 starts forgetting the thumbnails that I'd already set and putting random ones back on the files I've already done..

Is there a way to get Windows to 'remember' my custom thumbnails?

Also I tried a trick I found to deny Windows permissions to the thumbnail's database, it didn't work for this problem..

I'm currently downloading a copy of Linux hoping that it's easier to customize/navigate these hundreds of folders. -_-

EDIT: I downloaded "Ubuntu Linux" and I'm tempted to mark this topic "Solved" but I'll leave it open and see if anyone can answer this... I feel like a fool for not trying out Linux sooner, I'm going to use it for all my picture archiving/browsing.

Answer:Problems with thumbnails with my image folder...

Change view to list, then back to thumbnail view. If you notice, in thumbnail view mode, you can drag the files around.

Anyone know of a setting/hack/freeware that will alphabetically arrange the folder thumbnails displayed on clickiing the FE icon?

I think they are currently arranged by order of opening. Sometimes I have 15-20 open and quickly locating the one I need can be tricky. Especially if similar names are not fully visible, e.g. USA2016 GPX, USA2016 Photos, etc.

Answer:My Picture Folder...blank thumbnails...?

Hi,
Sounds like your folder view is set to tiles. Click on View and then click either filmstrip or thumbnails on the menu that drops down.

Hey there,

I have a problem with the way Win7 displays folders: my whole music collection consists of folders that contain the songs and the covers (sometimes there are more than 2-3 images next to the audio files).
By default, W7 completely messes the folders: I'd like to be able to select the "main" cover for each folder - but Windows won't let me. Instead of that, the display randomly selects 2 or more images for the thumbnail.

This is how I'd like each folder to look:

Instead, I get one like this:

I tried setting the Customize tab exactly like in XP, but - when I select the image - nothing happens. The thumbnail remains the same.

Please help me out - what do I have to do so that I can have all my folders like in the first image?
Thank you in advance for helping out.

Answer:Trouble with folder thumbnails/customization (HELP!)

Hi C05T1N,

You're not going to believe this.

After you chose the jpg you want, drop a random mp3 you have on to the folder.

It will change to the icon you selected.

Some how it refreshes the icon cache only when you place a new file into the folder.

clearly a bug.

Greetz.
edit. taking a mp3 out does the same thing. it forces a refresh. :-)

New to the forum so I'll write my "Comment" in two ways.

(Skip if you hate emotional back-story)Long Version:
I've used XP for going on years now and switched to Vista about 9 months ago. First thing I had to do was remake all my folder thumbnails. I'm a real lover of pictures, I really am. I usually make a individual folder per artist, put the artist's face as the thumbnail, and stuff as much of their works as I can get my hands on into said folder. In XP this was nice and easy, I had the face take up the whole folder and it was easy to remember each person. With Vista it got annoying as my images were placed at a slant and when they were cached they often got lost and started to migrate to other folder (And when you have a public computer with password protected folders for your non-worksafe artists that migrate to your safe folders and replace thumbnails THIS CAN BECOME A REAL PROBLEM). For Windows 7 though I'm stuck...I really am. Somehow or another my folders now hate me and choose to disobeadiantly choose their own thumbnails, at a slanted angle, with 2 or so images stacked together, change when new images are added, and it has made it really hard to see and remember my folders now. Why was such a wonderful feature eliminated to such an extent that it now feels in the way to have the folder not be represented by a single image?

I am backing up folders. all of these folders use some of my own created imagery (as the folders own thumbnail, to indicate what it contains). when adding these complete folders to a disc to burn (ashampoo), hidden files appear as a result, eg :-thumbs.dbfolder.jpgthese files should be hidden, so how do I burn these to a cd or dvd without them showing? is it possible-do I need a particular burning program to do it? ps in windows "do not show hidden files and folders" is already selected", so I dont know what else I can do. thanks for any info!

Hi:
I have Windows XP Pro. About a week ago I received 2 Microsoft automatic updates. It was about Net frame SP1 and I also installed Internet Explorer 8. Yesterday I went to my Photos folder and all the Jpeg image files with the picture preview thumbnails used to identify the photos have all been replaced with the jpeg file type magnifying glass icon. Others have the Bitmap image type icon. I can no longer identify my photos with the thumbnails. Furthermore, when I open any of the current magnifying glass thumbnail, the photo appears in Internet Explorer. I don't like that. Before this, it used to open in Windows (I think). I opened another magnifying glass thumbnail and it looked like a bar code all scribbly. How do I get my Jpeg and Bitmap images back to the preview thumbnails like it used to be before I installed the updates? Or maybe it was something else that changed the settings? I tried to do a System Restore only to be disappointed by System Restore having been turned off with no restore date to choose.

Here's the deal: I have 3 hard disks.
C- Programs and Windows
E- Games
F- Music
Disk F has a lot of organized music foders and all have thumbnails. When I create a folder on my desktop or anywhere else, it automatically gets a random image from disk F, from some of the folder thumbnails. Or some already created folders have random images, for example my WinRar folder has a Metallica thumbnail. Sometimes it won't get it when I create the folder, it gets it when I put something in it. Sometimes when I refresh. Sometimes when I delete something from the folder. Help.

Hi,

I have noticed that both of my computers are having issues when displaying thumbnail folder. It seems that the preview of whatever is in the folder is invisible. Its not a massive issue as folders navigate just fine. Its just started to do it on my new install what i dd 2 days ago. Its strange because its on both my laptop and desktop. Is this caused by some program I may be using?

Any help would be appreciated

Answer:Folder Thumbnails Display Issue?

-Right click on empty area and uncheck "View-> Hide File names" option.

I have this problem with my laptop that I really need to fix. Its annoying!

Whenever I have a folder up, or have a browser up, the "File" toolbar at the very top left of the file/browser keeps on flashing as if I'm clicking on it. Sometimes its very hard to type when doing this. It will do it for a while and then after a while it will stop, only to come back again. I tried system restore and that didn't help the problem.

Sounds like you have a virus still hiding in your system

Please back up all your files and follow the steps below

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
* Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

Hello,

"Customize" > "Folder pictures" > "Choose a file to show on this folder icon." no matter what picture I choose, nothing changes.

I am the sole user with full privileges/permissions. There are no thumbs.db, desktop.ini or folder.jpg files inside. I didn't disable showing icons/pictures in the explorer options.

Is there a specific image resolution I need to choose, or is something else?

"Folder.jpg" seems to work okay, but I really want to know why the normal route doesn't.

it Always Still Old Thumbnails When I Saved New Images. How to Refresh That ?

Answer:Why Folder Thumbnails NOT Update When I Saved New Pictures ?

Hi, I understand the question as
Why doesn't the folder icon change when I save new images to that folder? How do I get that to refresh?

What I note is that the folder icon does refresh automatically if there's a significant change to the folder content. For example, it changes if I put all the images in a folder into a folder within the first folder.

However, the shortcut to that folder isn't necessarily updated at the same time.

The difference can be seen by opening an explorer window to view the folder contents, and another to view the folder icon (e.g. medium). Significant changes to the folder content are quite quickly reflected in the folder icon.

For example, deleting 1 of three images makes no change, deleting 1 of two images makes a change in the icon.

If at the same time you keep a shortcut to the folder visible on the desktop, you will probably see no change in that, even if you rebuild the cache.
