I want to have thumbnails for only some file types...

Question: I want to have thumbnails for only some file types...

How would I go about this? I dislike having thumbnail previews of certain file types like video's. But I want my Jpgs, gifs, png's and such, basicly pictures to have Thumbnail previews still. Thats all. The only option Seven gives me is all or none.

Preferred Solution: I want to have thumbnails for only some file types...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: I want to have thumbnails for only some file types...

You may use Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs . It provides thumbnail preview turn on\off mechanism for some codecs.

Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{3D1975AF-0FC3-463d-8965-4DC6B5A840F4}]
@=""
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
@="{9DBD2C50-62AD-11D0-B806-00C04FD706EC}"
----------------------------------------------------------
After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

I've been googling around but can't seem to find an answer to this seemingly simple question. The documents and spreadsheets on my desktop show up as a thumbnail preview of the file (which is kinda stupid because all of the documents and spreadsheets look the exact same). So I want these to just show the Word or Excel icon instead. I know you can go to:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Option>View>Files and Folders>"Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But then my picture files just show the Windows Picture Viewer icon instead of the picture thumbnail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to assign icon or thumbnail settings to specific file types or extensions? I'd like my pictures to have thumbnails but all other file types to show only icons. I'm currently using Windows 7 and system details are in the sig...

Answer:(Win7) How to show icons for some file types and thumbnails for others?

If you don't explicitly tell Word or Excel to save a thunbmail of the file along with the file, it will use the default Word/Excel document icon (which happens to look like a document from either of those programs). Can't you just change the default icon to something else?

To answer your question, though, no, I don't think it's possible.

For example, for MKV videos Windows 7 shows no more information than it does for text files. I'd like to have thumbnails and data like duration, pixel dimensions, video and audio bitrate etc. as it shows for other types.

Something that I'm simply stumped on...

Disk types (CD+RW, CD+R, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW), drive types, and format types(different versions of UDF, mastered, etc).

I thought I had the basic gist of it, until I was trying to get a driver onto a disk to use in an old 98 machine. I simply could not understand it.

All of the different disk types, format types, what's compatable with what... Even when I see charts like the one in Windows Vista's Help and Support page, I'm still confused.

Is there any website or someone here that can spell everything out? All the differences between format types, all of this write once business, or write to more than once but can't erase, or only format once, all that stuff that doesn't ever seem to be the case when you actually go to burning files and formatting?

Answer:disk types, format types and drive types

Hi

The HowStuffWorks website is fairly good for this, example on CDs http://www.howstuffworks.com/cd.htm

Main Computers page http://computer.howstuffworks.com/computer-hardware-channel.htm

But quickly and as simple as possible off top of head.

CDR or DVDR disks allow you to write once on these with no erase, however if you format one of these disks to UDF ( drag and drop ) by formatting them as such, you can write data to them, then at later date add more data, and add more data, until the disk is full, if you finalise any CDR/DVDR you cannot add more data to them as they are locked.

CDRW or DVDRW disks allow you to write and erase data many times.

Is it possible to have Windows Explorer sort your files by the literal file extension, rather than by the designated file type? For instance, instead of having all of my WAV, MP3, MID, AIFF, OGG, etc files being listed as "Winamp Media File" I'd prefer that they are seperated by thier individual extensions like "WAV File" or "MP3 File" which makes it easier to identify file types within the explorer. I guess the same thing applies for images and video files, which can be grouped together under a common application.

Answer:File Extensions vs File Types in Windows Explorer

Well you can always use the "arrange icons by type" method. You can also assign certain icons to certain file types through folder options. That way all your wave files may have one icon while your MP3s have another, etc.

Hello

I dont know if Im on the right section to post this.

I just want to ask to our fellow members and gurus here, I dont know what went wrong but suddenly the unknown file types in my Windows 7 PRO x64bit doesnt display its file extensions anymore..

How can i restore it to default? to display the file extensions on unknow file types in windows 7...

Any tips would be much appreciated. Thank you..

Answer:Display File Extension on Unknown File Types

Windows Explorer/Organise/Folder & Search Options/View.

You should find it in there. (that's "hide extentions for know file types") Might be what you need.

When I do a search on how to sort, I get a Tutorial that tells me to open the "View" Menu item.

However, as you can see from the attached, I don't have a VIEW menu on my Folder.

I would like to sort these by file type so that I can save them to a CD.

What am I doing wrong here?

Answer:I can't sort by File Types. What happened to File Details?

I attached a word doc with two pics in it. I have no idea wht these [IMG] links are.
I hit the paperclip, added my file from my C: drive, hit Upload, and got this.

Essentially, I created a new folder, put in some music files, and wanted to sort them by file type, but I have no option for that. I can only sort by List, Details, Tiles and Content.

Under Windows XP, I COULD sort using View/Details.

When I tried changing the icon of 'File Folder' in 'Folder Options' --> 'File
Types' , by mistake I made 'find' in 'Action' list ('Advanced' button) the
default. Now I am unable to remove it. So whenever I try double clicking a
folder, a search window appears.

Now I don't want anything in the list to be made default. System does not
allow me to do so.

What I tried to do and how it failed?
1. I tried adding a new action item with the application as 'explorer.exe'
and made it the default. After this whenever I double click a folder it opens
in a new window. Note that the Browse folder settings in General tab of
'Folder Options' is still 'Open folders in the same window'

2. There is a checkbox in 'Advanced' settings for 'File Folder' with label
'Browse in same window'. This option is unchecked and the best part is, this
is disabled.

3. Even file folder is not present in file types..
How do I go back to my old settings where in no item in Action list is set
as default?

Answer:file folder disappeared from file types

don111, Click Start>Run then copy & paste or type in:
regsvr32 /i shell32
Click OK

Restart your computer.

If that doesn't correct the problem try the "Folder Association Fix" at the link below. Instructions are on the page.

I'm sure there's a way to do this, but it's out of my realm of digging in windows.

What I need essentially is a Symbolic Folder that will scan a set directory and only return specific file types.

For example, I have five folders with .jpgs, .psds, and .txt.

What I would like is to create a folder that when opened will only show me .txt files from those directories.

Is there a program, or service that will allow me to do this?

Answer:Symbolic File Folder with Specified File Types?

This is quite easy to do with Windows Search.

This example is how to create a shortcut to all images on chosen folder (location), inclusive all its subfolders:Open the location you want to use as root. In this example I'll use Libraries
Type to search field kind:image, click Save Search:
.

.
Name the search as you want to, click Save:
.

.
Now when you open the folder %USERPROFILE%\Searches, you'll find shortcuts to all your predefined searches:
.
Using the same method you can create shortcuts to almost anything. Some search criteria examples:ext:pdf = all PDF-files (extension .pdf)
ext:jpg = all JPG-files (extension .jpg)
datemodified:‎01/‎09/‎2010 .. ‎31/‎10/‎2010 = all files modified between 1st of September 2010 and 31st of October 2010 (notice the date should be in default format used by the current Windows user account)
kind:music = all music files

Question: HELP!! file types!

I am working on a friends machine and he wanted all these crazy icons for certain things...I was doing it by hand and it was taking forever. Someone suggested that I try tools > Folder Options > File Types. I went in and changed the icon for the third item down. I did not change any of the actions or even mess with any of the options other then the icon. what the fuck?

(as seen here):

now when I click any directory to open it it opens winamp and trys to play the files in the directory. I understand whats happened sort of I just have no idea how to fix it...help please.

So after some screwing around I got it so when I click a folder it opens search instead of winamp. but now Im stuck I really need help with this!

I already tried uninstalling winamp and that works unless I reinstall winamp. Then the same thing happens again.

Answer:HELP!! file types!

see the right side of the pic? the button that says "set default" should work for most of them, the ones that don't work, just delete them (shown on left side of pic) and when you double click on a file type that had it's association deleted you will be prompted for the correct program to use to open it.

Question: File types

Please could someone help me? I have a Nikon digital camera with installed software Fotostation easy. Downloading the photos, no problem but when I click on a photo to send via email it attaches itself all very well but the attachment cannot be opened. I get an error message" C/Windows Temporary Internet Files/Content IE5/etc."This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking etc". I have noticed as well that the files created by Fotostation show that it is in JPG format but it used to have an icon which is different to the one which appears now. I have used this program before and had no problem so I think some other downloaded program could have interfered with it. I have also uninstalled and then re-installed the software but nothing works. The only new software I have installed was for a Canon scanner. OPS WIN 98SE 2nd edition.I am desperate!!!!!!Heidi

Answer:File types

are you saying you can't open it - -or the people you are sending it to can't open it ? The simple way of associating a file with a program/applictaion is if yoy select the file (single click) then once highlighted, right click it - - you should get a drop down menu with amongst other options, 'open with' - - -select what you want to open it with ie Photshop or PSP or failing that, Internet Explorer - - -tick the little box wich says 'always open with this' , or words to that effect, and away you go.

Question: here! FiLe TyPeS**

What are some common file types that i dont need?

Answer:here! FiLe TyPeS**

This is a very broad question - it rather depends upon what you have on your PC and why you need to make room more space on you drive (I'm assuming that is what you need to do).

All .tmp (Tempory) files can usually be deleted safely, and some files for unused sound schemes, desktop themes and some font files may be deleted, but, and this is a very big BUT, you have to be sure the files, particularly text files, are not being used by an application or file you want to use. For instance deleting the basic Windows fonts would prove disastrous in the short term.

To identify what file extensions belong where you could take a look at this comprehensive site first:

http://filext.com/

But perhaps before proceeding further you could give a bit more depth to your question. For instance, there may be better ways to free up space on your harddrive that we could advise, if that is what you are trying to do.

Question: File types

Okay, I have a really annoying problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321186&Product=winxp#kb1

I had this problem explained in that link. I did what was said in registry, but it does not set it back to default. Now instead when I double click folders and drives, it opens them in explorer, which is alot better than opening shearch on a double click. But id like if it just opened folders and drives normally, without using explorer.

Now, could i just type 'open' where it says to type 'none' in the default values for it to use the normal open method? or will that not work and screw things up more?

Answer:File types

Doubt writing 'open' will work.

When you say Explorer do you mean IE, or explorer as in windows explorer?

I clicked the third item down, (none) FILE FOLDER, and then clicked advanced, I then changed the icon to what I wanted and then click ok. it seemed to work ok but when I tried to open a file it opens search instead of openeing the directory. I tried changing the icon back thinking that was the problem, but no dice. I didn't change anything but the icon so I have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it. I routinely transfer folder contents (MSWord docs, XL spreadsheets and the like) to a back-up computer. In doing so today, I noticed files being transferred with extensions like .dl (thumbs.dl), .hdl, etc. I've never noticed these before. Are there files hidden in these folder that don't show up when viewing hte contents of the folders via Windows Explorer? I've had a wack-o keyboard lately, have scanned the system with nine (9) different tools and found nothing. What are those files doing hanging out with a bunch of generic stuff?

Thumbs.dll is the database of thumbnail images, created (for preview in Windows Exploere) in any folder that has images.

You will only see them if you have your settings to view all hidden and system files.

Hi all. Wondering is some of you scarily brilliant people could help me with this issue. Since I've had XP, I've had this minor irritating issue..............When I'm at a website, and right click on a picture to save it, the default file type to save it is *ART. From the "drop down" in the file save box, I have only one more choice, and that is Bitmap. If I save as *ART, I can't open it later. I get a dialog box that says "cannot open this file type, would you like to search internet for program to open it". So needless to say, I've been saving as Bitmap. Then every so often, I'll come accross a picture, that just won't save as Bitmap. Even though I choose Bitmap, It saves it as an "unknown file type". I have 3 other computers in the house, one with 95, one with 98, and one with ME. On those, my save choices are Jpeg, and Bitmap.
No problem with those. I'd rather save stuff in Jpeg, because it's a more common file format, but don't seem to even have the choice on XP. (XP Home edition BTW). If I take pics with my digital camera, THEY save as Jpeg, so it's not like the Jpeg format has dissapeared from the computer or anything. LOL
I AM running AOL on all the computers, and all version 8.0. So I don't think it's got anything to do with the ISP software. It's the last irritating thing, I have to sort out with XP, now that I've got all the security holes plugg... Read more

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

Answer:Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

Hi guys, I have Mass Effect 2 installed on my system, however its logo is scattered all over system files. It's very strange, none of these files have anything to do with the game, if I click on them, it brings up Mass Effect 2! What the hell?

Answer:ME2 Logo all over certain file types

What file types (extensions) are these on?

It sounds like they were associated to "Open with" ME2 by mistake. You can use the tutorial below to restore the default associations for the affected file extensions. If this is with shortcuts, then you can download the LNK (lnk) option.

Hope this helps,

Answer:what software to use for .abm file types

Found a link here that talks about ABM files.
In the end, the poster indicates that the ABM files WERE in fact an album, but when he opened it with the recommended trial software, it contained thumbnail references to JPG files that were NOT sent to him.

I would email your relative and confirm if the file was in fact an Album, in which case you most likely have the same thing. An album without any pictures.

At first, this didn't look too serious, but after researching the net, I'm no closer to fixing it. I use PhotoShop and Corel Painter everyday of my life, and they're nice, well-behaved programs. I have thousands of image files. Last week, on a whim, I took out an old software program I had never used but saw mentioned in a forum, Corel Photo-Paint 8.0 and installed it, played with it a little, didn't like it and uninstalled, carefully. Now, however, all my files types are Corel Photo-Paint 8.0. How do I change them back?

When I go into Control Panel/Folder Options/ File Types, and then to Corel Photo-Paint 8.0, Advanced, Edit, Browse, I can't get PhotoShop to open as "Application used to perform action". I'm not even sure that's where I need to be. This thing is very confusing.

Question: Audio File Types

Recently when I tried to play a song that I downloaded, the message came that "The file you are attempting to play has an extension that does not match the file.Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior".
This came in both Real Player and W.M.Player.The former attempted to find the extension from the net but could not.
I could not determine the file type from the 'properties option'.
How can I find the file type and download the correct extension/plug in/codec and make the player play it?
I have directX 8.1 in my computer which is using w2k professional+sp4 and IE6 though I usually use the Firefox browser.

Answer:Audio File Types

In Windows Explorer you can go to the tab Tools>Folder Options, then click on the tab View and un-check the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types."By doing that, you'll see the extensions of every file you have.

I just recently had to get rid of a virus and in the process some of my file associations got messed up. Particularly the '.dat' files Kazaa uses as download place-holders are now associated with Microsoft Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and certain files that have no extension are now associated with Notepad.

Both of these files are supposed to be completely unassociated with any programs, and I'd like to get them back that way. I'm guessing I'll have to mess with the registry, but I don't want to risk it without instruction.

Advance apologies because this may have been asked before.
Window 7 Libraries seem to work by including certain folders rather than file types despite the fact that the default library names are by type (eg Videos)
On my hard disc I have a folder called My Pictures. Several of the folders in that Folder contain video clips. If I click on 'Pictures' in Libraries, it brings up those videos as well as the pictures. But when I select 'Videos' in Libraries it brings up a blank page.
If I create for example a holiday folder (eg Rome 2012) containing photos, videos scanned maps and word documents, is there any way that I can click on a corresponding library category and only show that type of document in the Rome folder without having to do a sub search. If I want to view all items, I can go to the folder called Rome.
Is there any way that I can make the Libraries search ONLY file type (eg for Photos - jpg, tiff etc. and for the Movies library - avi, mov, etc) so when I click on the Videos library it brings all of the videos on my hard disc and nothing but videos without having to go into the particular library and then do a sub search.
Sorry this is long winded but wanted to explain myself.

Thanks for your patience

Answer:File types in Libraries

You can fix that easily. Right click on the Library (in the left pane), go to Properties. There you can add/delete folders (not files) any way you like.

If there is one you don't want, just highlight it and 'Remove' it. And don't forget APPLY > OK.

Library - Include a Folder

Library - Remove a Included Folder

Hi,
I was just wondering if it is possible to stop certain file types from appearing in windows explorer?

I'm using Sony Vegas which creates a .sfk file for every clip containing the waveform of any audio. The problem is it's making the folder full of 50+ clips too messy and I can't find the bits I need.
I would just hide the files but then if I add more clips to the folder and then Vegas creates another .sfk it's not hidden.

Thanks.

Answer:Hiding certain file types?

Hello Auroraah,

If you like, you could use the command to manually hide all .sfk files in the folder every so often.

I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.7

I've never had any problems with Firefox, other than the memory leak, until just recently. For some reason, I can't download .mp3 or .mov files anymore. If I click on a link to one, nothing will happen. If I right-click and choose "Save Link As" the save window will open, but it'll have "redirect.mov" as the file name rather than the actual file name, and when I click save, the download will appear in the download manager, but never start. The main site I've been having trouble with is Revision3.

http://revision3.com/diggnation/2007-09-20travislopes For example. If I click the "Download Now" button, nothing happens. I can download the .wmv version, but not .mov or .mp3. I've tried in Internet Explorer and both those file types will download there.

I've never had this problem before, but I know someone else who at one point wasn't able to download anything with Firefox. I reinstalled Firefox, which worked, but the problem came back the next day.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong?

Answer:Can't download certain file types

The Download Now button at Revision3 doesn't actually download the file, it opens a QuickTime window and streams the MP3, so right-clicking the Download Now button and selecting Save won't save the MP3, just the redirect link.

In Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Content tab > Manage button and scroll down to MP3 and MOV. What is listed as their Actions?

If you click the Change Action button for both MP3 and MOV you can choose to 'Save them on my computer'. This should allow you to save the file rather than streaming it through the QuickTime plugin.

Question: Audio File Types

OK my wife and i just started an Itunes subscription. We have been using the free filesharing network service called 360share (for the past 8 years). We love it because its free, but are tired of getting crap music or the risk of viruses, or that the download takes forever.

We want good quality music, that is clean from viruses, and that can be downloaded fast.

We play music mainly on

Windows Media player
Burned CD's
Sansa Clip (music Player) (wife)
Motorola EM 330 (cellphone) (mine)

I notice that the file type for Itunes is not the same as what i have been downloading with 360share.

I really dont know the diffrence. I do know that t here have been some problems with DRM and file compabitlies. I noticed that when we copied a few new songs from Itunes to the Sansa clip, that it (windows 7) asked if we wanted to convert the files. And on the EM330, the music plays, but the Song Id's (Arist, Album, etc) are not being read. This makes finding music on that much harder.

What i want is a music file that i can trade freely among my music devices. I know that Itunes will work just fine on the Ipod, but we didnt get the Ipod because we felt that Apple was overpriced, and the Sansa Music player works just as well as the Ipod Shuffle.

So before i have to make (or buy) a diffrent file for each device, and possible take up memory space, someone please help me here with all of this.

Answer:Audio File Types

I'm not entirely sure I know exactly what you're asking.

In terms of near universal acceptance among players (hardware and software) you probably want to stick with MP3. Itunes does primarily sell AAC files (with an .m4a extension), which play fine on Ipods. The AAC files may, or may not, come with DRM copy protection. Unprotected songs can be converted to MP3 (at 128 kbps, a "good enough" bitrate) within Itunes pretty easily by right clicking on the song from within the Itunes program and choosing "Create MP3 version" from the options. Unfortunately, I don't use Itunes often enough to know if there's an easy way to tell beforehand whether a file is protected or not.

Probably the best known competitor to Itunes is Amazon. Amazon sells songs as MP3 files, mostly at bitrates that are higher than (better than) 128 kbps. Most songs are priced at $.99 (my experience is based in the US) with albums usually discounted and there are usually some free promotional songs.

There are plenty of netlabels that offer free and legal MP3 downloads, but these are usually going to be in fairly non-commercial genres -- electronic, dance, techno, etc.

There are plenty of live concerts available for legal downloading at Archive.org, in the live music section.

There are also services that sell MP3 files less expensively, like emusic and Amistreet. These are not endorsements -- read any agreements or contracts carefully and make sure the service o... Read more

Why do we have different music file types?

Answer:Why do we have different music file types?

There are as many reasons as there are different types. The best explanation is progress. Most music file types were created as an improvement. Either being better quality or smaller than earlier types, or a combination of the two. Other reasons are that some were created on different platforms like the Amiga and rather than going through the trouble of converting the files to a Windows format, it was easier to create support for those files in programs that were already on the Windows platform. There are many other reasons but those are probably the best reasons and the easiest to explain.

Question: Custom file types.

Hello everyone. I'm my department's desktop admin. and have spent about a week on this problem, we just switched to W7. This question has been asked many times in this forum but no solution seems to fit my issue.

I need to associate the ".pl" extension to a Perl compiler on the network. Presently, I have to install Perl (perl.org) to associate .pl to Perl but then not able to map to the location on the network.

This is what I used to be able to do in Windows XP:Start Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types
Click New
enter pl
Click Advanced
Click New
Action: Open
Application: "G:\Epic\Epic53\Editor\Perl\bin\perl.exe" "%1" %*
Any ideas as to how I can do this in Windows 7? I've seen some possible solutions by editing the registry but prefer to use an easier/elegant solution that I may have missed.

Thanks.

Question: Video File Types

This is so basic, I'm almost embarrassed. I'm new to the world of multi-media and need information about video file formats.

The only burner I have on my computer is Microsoft Media Player, and I've burned exactly one DVD which is three short video clips from television programs. While it looks okay on my computer, when I put the disk in my DVD player, the player doesn't even see it there. Media Player doesn't give any options that I've found and the one DVD I've burned was selected automatically as a "data file."

I'm willing to get another burner (if I can find one...I'm using Vista), but need to know if there is sort of a universal video file type that will display on either computers or DVD players.

Thank you.

Can anyone help

This is my first encounter with the Tech Support Guy forum and I have a few first questions all relating to the same problem.
I have been attempting to create an auto-running cd/dvd for my place of work consisting of a SWishMax developed slideshow with intro.
The file type is swf when published and swi when editing, I realise that I could create an auto run cd/dvd from Flash 8 Pro (Ive gone half way through the process of creating a project using this technology but found it difficult to grasp to the level I require thats why I jumped to SWishMax).
Anyway to cut to the chase, I am having trouble finishing off the project, when I try to save the swf file to a format that will play on wmp an avi for example the interactive components dont work, i.e. the link from the intro to the slideshow and the intro just keeps on looping without the option of viewing the slideshow.
What I need to know is
Can a swf file from SWiSHMax be burned to a dvd suitable to be played via a dvd player to a tv?
Will it retain any built-in interactivity?
Will I need to purchase 3rd party software?
Does the autorun inf enable the exe to open direct or will I still need to open from "My Computer"?

Sorry there are several issues in this one post I thought I get them all aired at the same time possibly to save time

thanks in anticipation

Hi,
Having just upgraded from Vista (great move) I find I have a couple of files in
my folders that I cannot now read. It is not a BIG deal if I cannot but I should still like to be able to.
These are ".eml" files which, I believe, were attachments through Windows Mail which,of course, is gone in Windows 7. I only use Google Mail now in any event.
Is there any way these files can be converted to a readable format ? There are a few pay for converters on the web but I do not want these really. I believe there is a way that these can be converted to mht or likewise. Help would be appreciated.
Incidentally, ten days into Windows 7 has been a revelation...speed, no errors, BSODs or any of the Vista plagues. Best move I ever made.

Answer:Changing file types.

Hello Peter,

To be able to read/open a .eml (email) file, you would need to install a email client program. A good free one would be Windows Live Mail. In it, you coud also setup an email account to read your Google Mail in as well.

Setup Gmail in Windows Live Mail (Gmail Email Account Setup)

Hope this helps,

Right now I manually view just about every HTTP request for a .exe in my organization. Its a bit messy and very time consuming.

Snort sends events to our SIEM which parses these into sortable, searchable, columns. One of the Snort signatures pretty much just looks for "GET *.exe", so an HTTP GET statement that ends in .exe results in a hit. Obviously this misses URL's for files that don't end in an executable file type, but result is an executable binary, but I have other Snort rules for this.

The issue is that Snort doesn't pass the actual URL, just the usual Snort metadata (time, src ip, dst ip, port, etc). The SIEM can log in to snort and view the payload of the packet which triggered the event - so that you can see the HTTP headers - and evaluate the event.

The problem is this is a relatively slow process, loading the payload can take between 10 and 20 seconds. This therefore makes doing this a very time consuming activity.

Here's what I'm looking for: a product or piece of software which can take a sniffed traffic stream, parse for HTTP GET statements which meet certain criteria (end in .exe, end in .zip, end in .msi, etc) and output these to syslog or at least something that is quickly digestible. I want to be able to scan a list of thousands of such requests per day.

Currently looking into developing a solution in house, but I can't imagine that there's not something out there that already does this (We used ... Read more

Answer:Log URL's of certain downloaded file types - (exe, zip, etc)

Microsoft TMG or a Cymphonics box should be able to do what you want. As well as (if you have them AD or LDAP integrated) who asked for the URL, if it was blocked or not, and a bunch of other stats.

I am sure there are others, but those are the ones I have the most expirence with.

I would really love it if some one would give me step by step instructions on how to change a files types. and just not their exentions. I need to know how to turn a VRO file in a MOV file.

Answer:Help on how to change file types

The Eisiest and not the smart way of doing it is.. Open my computer.. and at the top go to Tools and select Folder Options and select   the View Tab and then find the check box that says "Hide Extensions for known file types" you need to uncheck that option and then go to your file that Right click on the mouse and select the Rename and then just change the file extension.. for example..Origional File: Baraborn.vroChanged File: Barbaron.movand click enter..and it the file name changes.. sometime it works. and sometimes it doesnt.. so its a fifty fifty chance..

I have a friend running XP Home that needed to change what program a file type opened with. I had her go to Folder Options to change it but she only has the General and View tabs.
Got the file type changed by right clicking and Open With but I'd like some ideas of how to get the missing tabs in Folder Options to show.

regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
