How do I pin a shortcut to a website to the task bar?

Preferred Solution: pinning shortcut to website on taskbar

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: pinning shortcut to website on taskbar

Hello tjs,

Welcome to Seven Forums. ]

Unfortunately, you cannot pin a shortcut to the taskbar. What you can do is pin your web browser whatever it is to the taskbar and then pin the shortcut to the browsers jump list. The other alternative is to create a new toolbar from a folder that contains the shortcut. Info here if needed: Quick Launch - Enable or Disable

Hope this helps.

I installed Windows 7 recently and am finally making it look and behave the way I like except for one thing I would appreciate help with.

You see, I'm on dial-up... Don't laugh it's still the only thing available where I live.

When I had Windows Vista and before that I always had shortcut icon in my taskbar I could click on to connect or to check the state of my connection. Now I have to click on the Network Sharing Center in the right hand corner, and it takes me 3 more clicks before I'm finally connected. I have to go through the same routine to check if I'm still connected or what speed I connected at. Also, I don't always manage to connect on the first try so I have to go through that routine many times. I did manage to create a shortcut by opening Adapter Settings and creating one from there but the problem is Windows 7 wont let me pin that shortcut to the taskbar. I don't know what is worse... Having to go through the 3 or 4 cliks to connect, or having to stare at that huge dial-up shortcut all the time on my otherwise pristine desk top? Oh, and thanks for the little file that allowed me to remove the Libraries Icon from my desktop. Was really happy to find that little gem.

Any suggestion with my current problem would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Pinning a Dial-up Shortcut to taskbar

Hello Ellebrius,

I'm not certain as to what specific area you need to have open to, but maybe this will help. It will allow you to create a shortcut that opens directly to your "Network Connections", and you can pin it to the taskbar.

Network Connections - Create Shortcut

If this is not where you would like to have the shortcut open to, then please post back to where instead. I'll see if I can get one for it.

Hope this helps,

Hi:
I'm trying to pin a Gmail shortcut and a few forums shortcuts to the taskbar, but I'm not having any luck doing this.
I'm able to pin programs to the taskbar without a problem though so I'm wondering if somebody can tell me how this can be done in Win 7 Ultimate.

Answer:Pinning website shortcuts to the taskbar

It would show up if you right click the Internet Explorer icon

EDIT: The way to do this would simply be to save them as a favorite on the favorites bar and then drag them over the IE icon and drop them there

Hello everyone,

First post here and thanks for allowing me to be a part of the community!

My first question is while attempting to pin a website to the task bar in Edge I followed the directions and selected the "3 dots menu" and then selected "open with IE" option as instructed.

When I click on the webpage icon in the task bar the site indeed comes up but it is in Internet Explorer rather than Edge. Is there any way I can pin the site to the task bar and have it launch in Edge rather than IE? I understand it opens in IE because I opened the website in Edge and then told it to open with IE.

When I tried pinning the tab to the task bar in Edge I got the universal red circle with the line through it so I couldn't pin it unless I opened it in IE.

Ive noticed when I pin a website to the Start Menu that it will open in Edge. Is it not possible to have this happen by using the task bar?

Thanks so much for your help.

Appreciate interacting with you folks very much.

best,

rick

I installed Word 2013 onto a new computer some time ago. Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Pinning has never worked. I can drag, I can right click and select pin, I can do whatever I want, but nothing appears and it just stays blank. Neither do recently opened items show up on a right click of the icon. Pinning/recent items works on everything else (e.g. Adobe, Explorer), including Outlook. I tried reinstalling but it still wouldn't work. I couldn't find much to go on so I gave up and have done without pinning. Recently I turned on "store and display recently opened items in the start menu and the taskbar" and suddenly I was given another clue as to what the issue is - Excel still shows nothing BUT in Word's recent items I'm getting *Adobe* files (see screenshot, file names removed for privacy): http://i.imgur.com/3wOOU60.png) I can pin adobe files to word's icon. I googled again and I still don't see anything about this but I'm just wondering if anyone has come across this and can help. Thanks in advance!

I want to see a number of Window explorer icons on my taskbar opening the folders I regularly use. However when I create a shortcut on my desktop it will not let me. It will only let "pin to Windows Explorer" not what i want.
I find it very easy to just see the few icons I want on the task bar and click those. I do not want to go through more menus to open Windows explorer where I want.

Hi guys, I'm having a serious problem here. I wanted to add a folder to my windows explorer pinned folders so that I can right click on the windows explorer icon on the taskbar and have my popular folders right there. When I first setup windows 7, I did this by right clicking on the folders I wanted and clicking "Pin to Taskbar." Now, when I right click on folders, there is no such option. Even libraries only have the option to "Pin To Start Menu" which is strange because I had already pinned a library to the windows explorer icon on the task bar, which means that must have been an option before because I don't know how else I would do it. Can someone please explain to me how I can add more folders to the windows explorer icon? This is very frustrating

Answer:Pinning To Taskbar??

Drag folder to the explorer icon on taskbar and it will be pined there.

Question: Pinning to taskbar

Not a huge issue more of just something i was curious about, why cant the "computer" desktop icon be pinned to the taskbar? I know that it is possible to pin the windows explorer but i want it to have the computer icon or at least the c drive icon.

Answer:Pinning to taskbar

I haven't found the reason why it's not possible to pin the Computer icon to the superbar. Maybe it's because it belongs in the explorer - who knows. You can pin it, though, if you really want to. There are some guides already posted around here somewhere. You basically create a shortcut, then point that shortcut to where the My Computer icon points to, then pin it to the superbar.

Question: Pinning To Taskbar

Hi All

I am new to windows 8 but have been finding my way around, One problem I am finding is that some websites I visit to "Pin To Taskbar" seem to only show a blank icon! No name but text but when you change the text it doesn't change on the icon? strange one particular site is the Nationwide bank page cannot seem to get an icon with a name on it?

Anybody got any ideas as to why this happens on only a few sites?

cheers!

Answer:Pinning To Taskbar

Hello Gatewaya, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It depends on what favicon is used by the site for what icon the URL shortcut will have on the middle of it's page icon. I have a icon for Nationwide bank for me, so you might see if deleting your temporary internet files and history and reloading the site may help.

If you like, you could also pin the site in the jump list of the browser's icon on the taskbar.

I know about the tutorial explaining what to do using the toolbar method, but I don't like the separator between the Recycle Bin and the rest of the icons. There is another recommended method of pinning the Recycle Bin by creating a shortcut and using shell:recyclebinfolder, but this stopped working. In fact, all my folder shortcuts I created and pinned to the taskbar by using explorer.exe in the target stopped working.

Is there any other working methods out there so that I can put the Recycle Bin icon anywhere I want on the taskbar without seeing the separator?

Hi,

I'm currently having a problem where pinning any kind of shortcut to the taskbar via its context menu doesn't do anything. That is, a pin doesn't appear on the taskbar, and in the location '%AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar' no shortcut file is created.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Professional from Windows 7 Professional. That may be the cause.
Another potential factor is that previously, I have followed this guide (using both methods described) in order to further customize my system. The reason I mention that is because in researching I read the answer posted here. Unfortunately, I have not been able to fix the problem by undoing the first method of that guide; also there is no way to undo the second method of that guide, and I have been unsuccessful in fixing the problem by following the solution that answer describes (I couldn't find the 'Inkfile' folder). By the way, is it wrong that the 'link' key I deleted in following the process to undo the first method hasn't reappeared after restarting?

I'm not sure what to try next.
I would really appreciate some help... sorry to be foolish enough to try and customize my system a bit, if that is what caused this issue.
For now, I guess I'll have to use shortcut toolbars on my taskbar. Or is there a registry location where I can at least go in and, say, add a key with a shortcut address and icon address to add a pin with those properties?

Thanks in advance,
Felewin

Something weird has happened to my taskbar. I have a few programs pinned there and everything was okay. Then today I unpinned Firefox from there because I wanted to change the icon I was using. After deciding I didn't like it I tried to go back to the one I was using but when I pinned it back to the task bar this problem occurred:

As you can see when I click on the silver Firefox icon, it opens up a new firefox icon (default icon) in a separate place, taking up unnecessary space. I can't figure out how to make it go back to the way it was where everything stayed within the silver icon.

Answer:Strange problem with pinning an icon to taskbar

It is indeed the browser being opened but the problem is it used to open up within the silver icon (the default firefox icon you see to the right has basically taken its place). It's a bit of an annoyance because it takes up the little space I have on my taskbar before things start getting combined and messy.

Sorry if what I'm explaining is confusing, it would probably be easier to show with a video or something.

If not already bookmarked then log in to your Bank Account via your webpage and when on the home page bookmark it and then follow procedure to create a desktop shortcut. Once you see it is working then you can delete any previous one that no longer works.

Is there any way I can create a shortcut on the desktop that will take me direct to a web site (assuming that I'm already connected to the internet). Ideally, it should open the default browser IE7 if it is not already opened.Sort of like the forum's "click here" but on the desktop.I know I can go through favourites but it would be nice to be able to do it quicker for a few frequently accessed sites.

I just replaced an XP pro workstation, with a new Win 7 Pro Dell Optiplex 790, on our 4 computer chiropractic office XP pro wired local area network. The server is an XP Pro machine where all the Billing & EMR software programs reside. All of the new workstations shortcut icons that point to the programs on the Server will pin to the taskbar on the new Win 7 workstation except for one.

The Google machine has not helped me find the answer.

Anyone with any ideas would be appreciated?

I remember when I first got XP there was a little shortcut in the taskbar that you could click and it would send you directly to the desktop. I deleted it shortly after not thinking I would use it, but I use it at work all the time and find it very useful. I was wondering how I could go about getting it back as a shortcut in my taskbar Thanks in advance!

I want to put shortcut to websites, such as yahoo, or google, etc on the taskbar so the icon is not hidden behind main screen (like my dsktp shrtct is). When I look how to do it under google, it gives msoft site which says "Add Icons to the Desktop or Taskbar". Under that it has "To Pin APPS to the Taskbar" and "To Add Shortcuts to the....DESKTOP". Huh?? That makes it sound like it is not possible to add a google or yahoo shortcut to the.....TASKBAR. Sometimes they make what should be simple things to do sound so confusing.

I have a shortcut to an MMC console. I've used this shortcut in windows xp, windows 7, and windows 8. I can pin that shortcut to the start screen in windows 8.1, but I can't right-click the icon pinned on start and add to taskbar. I can't drag the shortcut
from the desktop to the taskbar. I Can put a shortcut into
C:\Users\utterly.baffled\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
which also contains all the other shortcuts i have pinned to my taskbar, but this MMC shortcut does not actually show up on the taskbar.

this behaves the same whether the MMC is saved on my C drive or out on a share.

Answer:how do i pin a shortcut to an MMC console to the taskbar?

so instead of just having a shortcut to
c:\folder\SavedConsole.msc
like I had in every previous version of windows,
I have to create a shortcut to
%windir%\system32\mmc.exe c:\folder\SavedConsole.msc

I guess we can only have shortcuts to exes on the taskbar.

I go way back with Windows... back to Win98, ME, and XP. I finally ditched my 8 year old Vista PC and bought a new Win 8.1 PC a few days ago. I've lost count of how many times I've screamed and nearly been reduced to tears. WTF was MS thinking when they gutted so much that was familiar?

I have no use for Metro... and I finally got Classic Shell to give me a traditional start menu back. But what's really got me fuming is I can't get a desktop shortcut into the taskbar. I don't want to get to the desktop folder... just plain old desktop. I've tried the drag and drop... creating new bars, creating .exe, bat, and .scf files hoping to drag them into the taskbar. They appear in the %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch folders... all of them... but they never show up in the taskbar.

Is there any hope? Shall I just move to Win 10? Will I be able to do it there?

Thanks!

I've researched this everywhere I can think of. I'm one of those old folks, so some things are more difficult.
I had absolutely no problems with WIN7 however, and just my opinion, how or who made win8 such a complete disaster for anyone to use
All I want to do is pin a desktop icon to the taskbar. I've gone to every app on this pc, right clicked, left clicked,
middle finger clicked, nose clicked, no luck.

Don't want to over simplify, but wouldn't it be great if one of those computer guru's had thought of this instruction?

"To put a desktop short cut on the task bar, right click on desktop and select pin to taskbar" or
"just drag that huge desktop icon in windows to the taskbar"?

I just got this new desktop pc about a week ago, am still navigating though help, tutorials, google, to try and figure it all out. I haven't even been able to set up a completely functional email, ie click on file, send page or url to mail recipient, both those options are grayed out.
And so on and so on.

Dear all,

I have a problem that seems to keep reccurring with a desktop shortcut to only website. The site is an MLS website. The page loads fine if the address is typed into the address bar in IE6 (http://mls.momls.com) but for some reason when a desktop shortcut is used to open the same website a yellow icon with exclamation mark appears at bottom left of screen and there is no functionality on the page. Moreover the error occured recently after pasting some cookies into the cookie folder.

On clicking the icon the dialogue announces one of two errors: "permission denied" or "my cookie is null or not an object"

Before the actual site is loaded a password dialogue is shown both when accessing via a shortcut or when entering the address in ie6 address bar. The only difference is that there is no error when using ie6 address bar after the password has been accepted. When the shortcut is used however, the error icon appears at bottom left of screen on correct passoword entry.

I have two computers networked via crossover cable. The error only occurs on the host computer. The other computer can launch the site with no problem from the shortcut on the desktop!

I have tried everything from deleting cookies and internet files to removing ie6 (which could not be done..imho possibly due to ICS???)...the computers at our office are also running IE6 and also do not have the shortcut problem..it is only the one computer. I installed Java Runtime E... Read more

Web files contain the source html code on your computer. Allows you to edit it.

Shortcuts to websites just link you to the website. The shortcut is basically like you entering the web address into an internet browser.

Answer:Don't Know If Website Shortcut Problem Happens To You Guys

This is a virus, usually from visiting certain Chinese sites
From the Singapore Hardware Zone, this solution may work

1)delete the IE short cut on ur desktop or whereever

2)go to ur IE installation folder eg:C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer
3)look for the file iexploere.exe or explorer.exe.
4)double click it and IE should open.check if the default link is the one u encounter or not. if not proceed to next step. if still that cn website. uninstall ur IE and u can stop reading now.

5)right click and send to desktop to create new short cut.

if u are using chrome and firefox. reinstall them and delete the short cut on the desktop will solve the problem.

what the software did was to replace ur browser shortcut with their their browser shortcut to fool u that the browser u are using is IE /chrome/firefox

This is the strangest problem I've encountered.

I am accustomed to right-clicking on an icon, dragging it to a different folder, releasing the right mouse button and choosing either Copy, Move or Create a shortcut.

Beginning a few weeks ago, I lost the ability to do this with website shortcuts (i.e., shortcuts that point to a website.) Here's what happens:

I right-click on a website shortcut, drag it to a different folder, and when the shortcut is in the new folder it vanishes.

I only have this problem with website shortcuts. My default browser is Chrome, so the website shortcuts are created by Chrome.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? How can I regain my ability to drag and drop website shortcuts via right-click?

I recently reformatted my computer and reinstalled win 7. Before I reformatted, I had a shortcut pinned to my taskbar that opened my sound recorder and playback controls so I didnt have to go through control panel to access them. just one click on the shortcut and I could access the record and playback tabs. Unfortunately I have forgotten how I did this. I read it somewhere but I didn't make a note of it. Now every time I want to change the way I listen to sound or record sound I have to go through CP to get to them.
I know I can pin the control panel to the taskbar and open the controls from there but that means 2 mouse clicks where I used to do it with just the one click.
I would appreciate if someone knew how to put these shortcuts on my taskbar.

Someone else has the CDs for my Office 2000 Premium (I don't see this person often) and I just didn't see anything on Microsoft's site about getting this back. After checking and configuring my router I went to the regular desktop view which is plain and looks like Win7
Only the quick access, internet icon, notices, lanquage and clock icons were visible.
I had created a new toolbar which referenced the start menu in Windows Program Data.
It was spread across the taskbar rather than compacted and previously available by clicking on the title Programs tucked in beside Quick Access.
There was no visible line to use with the cursor for dragging this bunch of links across into the right side area.
I removed that toolbar.
The few daily use Taskbar shortcut icons when created cannot be dragged to the taskbar even if I lock it.
(Browser, email, Notepad++,Everywhere search and a link to a Quick Stack popup collection of shortcuts)
Any open application is not displaying on the taskbar
Considered a 'Restore' and checked the list of restore points with a utility System Restore Explorer and it lists Oct.20 as the last restore point. I'm assuming Win10 does not do a daily restore point.
The last system image is Oct.7 so several Windows updates would have to be done over and there are a couple of those.
Is there a registry edit or workaround to restore the taskbar so shortcuts can be pinned there?

Answer:Taskbar shortcut icons disappeared

Well...I don't know what caused explore.exe to stop allowing the taskbar....
I used the icon that allows all views of apps (looks like monitors side by side) to see what I had open.
Opened Task Manager. Stopped Explorer.exe
Created a new task...explorer.exe
Desktop refreshed and there was the taskbar with my most used shortcut icons.
Thankful to have it back but what a bunch of fiddling around to get to applications and keep track of open windows.
