How to add a custom icon to a custom library?

Question: How to add a custom icon to a custom library?

Hi all,

I've been trying to find a way to add my own icons to libraries that I make. I have tried navigating to:

Code:
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries
And after right clicking the Library I made, I don't get an option to change the icon. Is there any way to do this? It would just be easier to tell the difference between user-created libraries if the icons could be changed, instead of only using the one default icon provided.

I've tried searching through the tutorials section, and looked through the first five pages or so of results that came up from a search here on the forums, and haven't been able to find the info I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help!

Preferred Solution: How to add a custom icon to a custom library?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A year ago, I created a custom Library and have been using it successfully until the beginning of this week (11/7/2011).

The library's folder location is similar to the following:
C:\Users\USERNAME\FOLDERX

Now, when I open the Library, it shows a listing of all of the files found within all of the folders in that library; that is, imagine a book separated by chapters (folders), and now all of the pages are scattered (files) in one cardboard box.

On the top right of this Library window, I have the following "Arrange by" options:
-Date modified
-Tag
-Type
-Name
----
-Clear Changes

On the "working" libraries, such as 'Documents,' there is a "Arrange by Folder" option, which is what I am attempting to have the custom Library emulate.

I have deleted the custom Library and tried to reestablish it, but the same issue persists: I cannot sort the Library by folder, rendering it useless.

Is there anyway to have the "Arrange by Folder" option reappear?
Did I accidentally switch some setting, or is this due to a Windows Update?

Thank you.

Answer:Library Conundrum: 'Arrange By Folders' is Missing in Custom Library!

Did you create a new library with the same name or a different name? When you go to Libraries, and you right click and select properties on Documents, do the attributes match what you find when you right click and select properties on your new library?

Simple. I want to put my Downloads Library on the start menu as a link eg. under Documents, Pictures, Music. I know if you go to the customize menu you can select Downloads but that is the folder from User.

Answer:Custom Library in Start Menu

Hello DevourDarkness,

Sorry, but that is not possible in Windows 7. However you can use the tutorial below to enable pinning folders to the Start Menu, then press and hold Shift and right click on the Documents Library and click on Pin to Start Menu.

Hello, I have added a custom folder to my Username folder, and I would like it to appear on the start menu alongside Videos, documents etc.
Any links, walkthroughs etc appreciated. A quick search revealed nothing at
Seven Forums about this. . .
Despite the brevity of this post I'm quite adept with Windows and software in general, I'll look up any words used that I do not know...

Answer:Add Custom Folder/Library to the Start Menu

You can't add custom folders to the right side of the start menu, only the left side.

You can however set your User folder to open as a menu instead of a link and it will expand out and you can get to your custom folder that way. One extra step but that's about alll you can do.

Ok.. I'm just throwing this out here...it's darn late hihi

I have written a 'program' (script), which will automate a recovery system for windows 7, full with a working bootmanager, (custom) partitioning, ramdisks, custom environment (winre/pe), and backup imaging , all legal and licensed according to microsoft as long as its not distributed (aka single computer [home] end user).

I decided after hourrrrssss and weeeks of reading, researching, testing, failing, testing again, reading again, installing F amounts of programs, running sysprep, MDT2010, WAIK, dism, imagex, winpe, winre, bootsect, bcdedit, you name it, I came to the conclusion.. I gotta write something up for the other poor souls around out there.

I'm not going into more details now, but I was thinking of writing this up in c++ or so and asking for donations, which will entitle support in the odd event it would not* work in your case.

However, to just test it all that it works, I wrote it in scripts (batch and vbs) which I realize now I never shall do again :P (more an OOP man myself)

I write programs normally so dealing with exceptions extensively in batch is just .... well about as time consuming as 20 % of the time I spent on R&D on all this.

Anyway, I am wondering, given I always been used to the share way, if there are people who actually are willing to donate 5 bucks or so, on a script which would take about 2 hours max to execute to set up a total personal home recovery partition system. This me... Read more

Answer:Easy Custom image + custom recovery OEM like system?

OKi.. update. I see now more how this program will work. shame its all working fine with .hta, .vbs and .bat.
ANyway, a full gui app will be present in windows 7 and lets a person set up all his wishes and desires for how he wishes ot have his recovery partitions system set up, incl. the option of other partitions to include in this.

When everything is done, a mikepe disk is created (a custom recovery disk which inclues a wimpe native application of this program ) which will run the precompiled settings from win 7 and will rebuild the partitions, all ready to go. It will also link this system to one single computer only (due to licensing issues and piracy protection.. I'm guessing the latter is easily hacked lol). Anyway, after that, it's all just some hours of installoing, setting up, and voila off to go.

A base windows 7 installation (no extra programs), will create a recovery partition of ~ 3 GB and will be redeploiyed all set to go with your own old account and password in less than 5 minutes.

If you add all your own programs etc, the rebuild can take up to 1 hour.

Still much faster than installing windows, changing all your settings, creating yoru account, installing all those programs... etc.

Will also I think add several boot options, as to recover damaged boot loaders, including support for adding boot entries and back up of linux, vista, xp any OS partitions. You will also be able to give the boot entries any name u fancy like:

Hi,
I am new to Windows Phone development. I have a basic need to access the Exchange Calendar.
I am using Windows Phone 8.1 SDK and Exchange Web Service 2.2 SDK.
As a first step I tried to use the Microsoft.Exchange.WebServices.Autodiscover dll to find the end points of the Exchange Server.

How can I assign a custom icon to an HTM file on my desktop?
I don't want to change the default htm icon - just the icon on this file.
I don't see a Properties>Change Icon option for it.

thanks

Answer:Custom Icon For Known Filetype?

Hi 222fbj, to BC

You can not change the icon on one file in a particular file format, you have to change the default which as you know will change the icon for all of them.

There is a way around this by performing a bit of slight of hand though. Move your HTM file to a different location like say in My Documents or to a storage location on a different partition, right click the file and create a shortcut. The shortcut to your file can have its own custom icon so go into the shortcuts properties and change the icon then move the shortcut back to your desktop.

Tada... your file appears to have a different icon.

Hi.

I have created some DVD's for myself with an "Autorun.inf" file on the root of the DVD with the .ico file also on the root and with the following command on the Autorun.inf:

Code:
[AutoRun]
ICON="AS14_NewOrleans_cmyk.ICO"
When I insert the DVD on the drive, the icon is not read and it does not show the icon I put there. Instead it shows the default Windows icon. I am using Windows 7.

When I click on "Autoplay", an error box pops-up (I have attached an image with this error message.

I have tried the same DVD on other computers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and even with Windows XP and when I insert the DVD on the drive it shows the icon I have put on it (as I wanted to) and not the default Windows icon.

Any idea of what is happening with my computer and why it does not show the icon it should?

Maybe it is a very simple problem to solve but I am not getting it...

Please let me know if is there any more information you need.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Answer:Custom icon on DVD does not show

From the error message you're getting, it looks like you don't have anything on your computer that can read .ICO file extensions, Windows should be able to read them automatically but maybe the association has been removed due to a different program for images, try setting the association to windows photo viewer in the default program control panel.

I am planning on getting W8 really soon. I will be upgrading from W7. I personally like the look of the modern UI and I like the fact that you can categorize your applications into groups. The question I have is can you utilize custom icons on the modern UI?
For example, if I establish a group of apps on the modern UI titled "Games", would I be able to replace the default Batman Arkham City icon (smaller one in lower left) with one such as the Harley Quinn icon (much larger one) that you see pictured here?
Not a deal breaker, I'm just curious as to how much customization will be allowed in W8 via the modern UI.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Custom Icon's In The Modern UI?

It's not built in, but you can use OblyTile to create custom tiles/shortcuts to desktop programs, using any image you want. Here's my start screen (still a work in progress, but gives you an idea of what you can do):

You can integrate into right click menu to click on any folder to change the icon to your choice. I have a folder packed with various icons and have linked it to that.
It has never given me any problems although icons I use for Photos/music/videos in my user folder usually get reverted to default with MS updates. So I have to change them to my liking again
Give it a try.

Hi @michaelukz, welcome to tenforums.com!

You'll need to create a shortcut of the folder and apply a custom .ico (icon) file to it for the representing image.

I know this was a Vista issue as well, but I just tried the icons I'm using on a friend's Vista machine with no problems.

I'm just trying to replace the Recycling Bin icons (full/empty) with something custom but the desktop icon doesn't change between the full and empty states when I add/empty.

Please don't give me the "just revert back to default" fix. An OS like this should be able to have simple icon customization functionality ironed out right?

Answer:Recycling Bin Custom Icon... Not Refreshing

Hmm I'm having trouble understanding what you mean.

Goto your desktop -

Right click -> Personalize -> Change desktop icons

Select the Trash Can(Full) replace the icon, then replace the empty one. Also this might help but try making sure the trash can is empty. Once it is get rid of em and then delete a file to confirm the change has worked. Everything should work as normal!

Let me know if you had a different problem or need more help!

All I want to do is assign a custom icon to a Mounted Volume folder/drive. Here is what I've tried so far...

1) I have a secondary SSD with 3 volumes (Documents, Pictures, Music). I used "Mount into an empty NTFS folder" to mounted each one into each of the following, respectively:

C:\Users\*ME*\Documents\
C:\Users\*ME*\Pictures\
C:\Users\*ME*\Music\

Once that was done, I clicked on Properties and tried using the "Customize" tab to change the icon, but the change is not saved, and always reverts to a default drive icon.

2) I was able to change the "Desktop" icon by editing the hidden "desktop.ini" file. I tried using the same method with the Mounted Volumes and this also did not work.

NOTE: After trying each method above, I cleared the icon cache and restarted just in case. The mounted volumes still have the same icon.

Answer:Permanent Custom Folder Icon?

Make a new folder on the desktop:

Open notepad and copy and paste this:

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
IconFile=Folder.ico
IconIndex=0

Save as desktop.ini inside the folder you are changing(look at screenshot)

Put a icon in the folder and name it:

Folder.ico

Then open Command Prompt and type:

attrib +s C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Desktop\FOLDER YOU ARE CHANGING
Press enter
Close Command Prompt

This only works if you move and paste the folder not if you copy and paste.

I needed to refresh my thumb drive for it to show.

Hey guys. Can I actually specify a custom size for these taskbar icons other than small or large as here? I have so many of them and my taskbar have already two rows and sometimes when I open programs or whatever else that is NOT included as a shortcut button on the taskbar, it takes extra space at which point the taskbar becomes scrollable with 3 rows. Not a good thing. I hate it with a passion.
Yes I could make my task bar with 3 rows, but no, I don't like to waste my precious screen space.
So basically I'd like to to make these icons a little smaller, kind of like the QuickLaunch icons.

Thanks for any advices

This is so not that important.....a one on a scale of 1-10. Not even.

When I change one of my desktop icons to the custom one I want, it stays for a little while and then, eventually reverts back to the default one on some subsequent boot. I have tried more than one icon, so it's not as if one is corrupt or sumthin.

I know....this is my only issue with all my current puters., I count my blessings.

I have a custom .ico file, which is my companies logo.

We are giving flashdrives to our sales reps that they will take with them to clients locations. What is on the flash drive is a .url file (that goes to our company website), the custom .ico file, as well as a few forms (.doc & .xls) all located in a single folder on the flashdrive. When the reps get on the clients machine they are going to be copying the entire contents of the flash drive to the clients desktop (XP or Vista)

With the .url file on the flashdrive we are able to set the icon as our custom .ico file, as opposed to the default IE or Firefox icon. But when moving from the flash drive to the clients PC this custom icon goes away and reverts back to the default IE or Firefox icon.

I have seen ways that allow you to pick which icon will be in use by using shell32.dll and a number, which does not help us since our custom icon is not part of shell32.dll.

Is there a way that will allow us to create a single script that will move the contents of the flash drive (minus the script of course) to a clients desktop and still hold the custom icon file? If there is not a way to do it via a script could this be accomplished by creating a .exe file that when ran will copy the files to the desktop and set the .url file so that it uses the custom icon file, just like when a program installs it can have a custom icon for its shortcut it creates?

Please bare with me im not a big scripting person, and especially not in VB.... Read more

Answer:Transfering Custom Icon From FlashDrive to PC

If I may make a sugestion...

You might want to try an installer-scripting program such as NSIS. You could wrap up all the files (ico, doc, and xls) in an installer BUT not the shortcut. NSIS installers have the capacity to create shortcuts (internet shortcuts are just shortcuts) and can specify which Icon to use--that is the one you install. You can also add the icon to the installer or even, if it is worth that much, make the installer look very fancy with company logos etc

The installer won't copy itself over either, and can run from the flashdrive. So, that's my suggestion, if you care for it.

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It can be done look at this tutorial Folder Icon - Change Default Icon

Here's a strange problem I'm having in Vista with custom-made icons I have created or icons from downloaded icon libraries: I go through the "change icon" procedure by right clicking a desktop icon I want to replace and then clicking properties. Then I browse to the location where the .ico file I want is stored and select it. The process works just fine. The new icon appears on the desktop. But whenever I restart the computer, I discover that one or more (but not all) of these icons has been replaced by the standard Internet Explorer icon. When I right click that icon and click properties, it shows me the icon that was replaced. I can restore it by going back through the change icon procedure all over again and giving the .ico file a new name. Any idea of what's going on here? Thanks a lot.

I made a Custom Music Icon that is tied to Windows Media Player, but every few minutes it reverts back to its default icon... How can I stop this????

Here is what happens exactly;

I change the Icon to my Custom Icon Via Properties>Customize>Change Icon>Browse

I choose my custom icon and hit Apply, it then changes to my custom icon.

a few minutes or seconds later it changes back to the default Folder icon.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated! thank you.

Answer:Custom Music Folder Icon Reverts Help Please

Welcome to Seven Forums, Revenant

May I ask you a few questions like
1. Are you changing the Music folder in the libraries .... or a folder containing music situated in any other location ?
2. Are you trying to change the music file icon of windows media player ?

My answers ....
1. If you want to change the Music library icon, Follow the tutorial Libraries Icons - Change . But if it is any other folder , you cannot change only one folder icon as long as the folder thumbnail preview is enabled , and you are to disable the thumbnail preview . For details, read Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable .

2. If you want to change the music file icon, follow the tutorial File Extension Icon - Change Default Icon .

It is better to Icon Cache - Rebuild after any alteration in the icons .

Not sure if this question should go in 'software' or 'programming'.

How to setup homepage html so when someone saves a link to (or bookmarks) the page, a custom icon will show up for the link, instead of the standard IE icon, on their computer screen ?

Answer:How to show custom icon at bookmarks of a web page ???

Put a favicon.ico file into root folder of website.
Insert the following between the <head></head> tags in the source of your index page:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

Hi there I know where to go to change icons but vista will not allow me to use a custome image.

I am right clicking the desktop > Personalize > then on the left hand side clicking Change Desktop Icons.

But when I browse to my image it does not allow it. I also want to change the default image for folders as well.

Any ideas how I can get around this?

Answer:Change Desktop Icon for custom images

Hello Matt,

What type of image are you trying to use to replace the icon with? You will only be able to use 256x256 pixel .ico (icon) files for these. This will give you some more details about icons for Vista if needed.

Vista Icons - Introducing Vista Icons - How to create Vista Icons

To change the default Folder icons, this tutorial will show you how to. You will need to change the DefaultIcon for the Folder key in step 6.

when you pin windows update to task bar you will get a generic control panel style icon instead of the icon like %SystemRoot%\System32\Dxpserver.exe

to get around that
- create a shortcut for "C:\Windows\System32\control.exe Panel\System and Security\Windows Update" on desktop
- name it Windows Update
- set the icon to " %SystemRoot%\System32\Dxpserver.exe"
- right click the new shortcut, and pint to start
- finally open the start ( windows key or click on the windows icon.....) and pin the windows update from start to task bar

I know we should not have to go about this long detour,  and we should also be able to create short cut and pin to task bar alone

I am trying to share the printer with this custom icon across the network. I am able to get the printer

shed some light on this it would be appreciated.

Answer:Shared Printer with Custom Device Icon

The custom icon only changes locally, as far as I know. You would need to install it in the other computers as well.

I want to add a custom icon to a sub-folder on an external portable USB storage device
and retain the custom icon irrespective of the PC the HD is "attached" to.

I have created an autorun.inf file

Code:
[autorun]
ICON=Square_blue.ico
Both the INF and ICO files are located in the target folder. eg, F:PortableUSB\Folder1\Folder2
"Folder2" is to display the custom-icon

Disconnected > reconnected the USB storage device, but the icon has not worked.

The "autorun.inf" was saved as ANSI and not Unicode format.
I have found Permanent Custom Folder Icon? ... and ... Rename a Drive in ~ Win7 ~
But not what I am looking for.

I want to apply my custom icon (Square_blue.ico) to any sub-folder in my portable USB HD, and hopefully in the odd folder in thumb-drives too.

What am I dong wrong or am I expecting the impossible ?
-----
Is there an easy way of applying the custom icon randomly to other folders.
Copy paste the INF and ICO files into another folder ?

I would be grateful for any help

If you follow this it will work Permanent Custom Folder Icon?
Save as Unicode and use Folder.ico not Square_blue.ico, name the .ico Folder.ico

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
IconFile=Folder.ico
IconIndex=0

This only works if you move(Cut, Ctrl+X) and paste in the folder not if you copy and paste.
You need to make a new 1 for each folder not copy and paste.

I have done it see screenshots all the test are folders.

I installed a custom icon pack (numix iPack), decided I didn't like it and uninstalled it however it left all of the icons still there. I have tried using sfc /scannow to repair them but it says I can't find anything to repair despite the installer even saying that it modifies system files (imageres.dll for a start).
How can I repair the system files and get the default icons back?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew how to set a custom icon size for the taskbar icons in Windows 7. I know you can select between large or small, however I'd like something in between those sizes (call it medium).

The large size takes up too much space, and the small size is a little small for my 15 inch high res laptop screen. Is there a way I can specify the icon size myself through the registry?

Answer:Custom taskbar icon sizes? Not large or small

My guess would be that you are going to need some third party program to do this. But be careful> icon, cursor and screensaver programs frequently come with adware, spyware or other malware.

What is the best way to....
- Make a file that users can download which has a custom icon and takes them to the website of my choice?

Currently,
I have a shortcut on my desktop that points to a website of which I have assigned a custom icon (.ico file) and everything looks and works great on my computer. The customer icon is not a Windows default .ico file

I save the file to SharePoint 2010 and when users download the file (shortcut.url) they don't get the custom icon, just a shortcut with a missing icon image.

Answer:Download Shortcut.url File = Lose the Custom Icon for It?

Hello Poagman, and welcome to Seven Forums.

That's normal for a referenced custom icon on your PC to not be included with the shortcut like this.

About all you can do is to also include the icon with the shortcut so that they can save the icon where they like on their PC, then change the shortcut's icon to target the icon's location on their PC.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Hello!
I have a blutooth speaker that I use with my laptop. When paired, the OS (Win 8.1) identifies it as headphones and uses the headphones icon. I don't like that; I want to give it my custopm name and use my custom made icon for this device.

When I change name and icon, all works as supposed as long as the device is not unpaired. But since I sometimes need to pair the device with my telephone, I have to re-pair it when using it afterwards with the computer. And then all my customizations are gone.

How can I get the OS to remember my device and apply the nice icon and name I have prepared for it?

Thanks!

Hi,
I have the habit of customizing folders' icon for easier management and nicer look, when needed. When copying a folder or many folders/subfolders with Microsoft Explorer, no matter where the destination is, the customized icons are showing up properly rather than the standard yellow folder icon.
I started using a synchronization application as I need to replicate some data on different devices/places and the synchronization should be two way so that no matter where I work and what I do I have a perfect mirror of the data.
Sadly, I noticed that any kind of software, even xcopy (from MS-DOS), fail to replicate properly the customized icons. So, I end up with plain standard folders on target path.

I read this article on this forum but it does not apply (see below). I also opened a new support question on social.technet.microsoft.com (it is in Italian) but nobody seems to answer with a solution.

The goal is to be able to replicate/reproduce custom folder's icons without any manual interaction exactly as if I would do this via Explorer. It is not acceptable that a user has to manually modify what was synchronized having to go through thousands of folders...

I am trying to understand what does Explorer do that makes it capable to reproduce the correct icon when, instead, any other software fails and how to apply the solution to third party software.

Please anyone can kindly help?
Thank you

HELLO GUYS!
I'm having problems when I try to customize my folder icons on VISTA. The icons I usually make is 256x256 px size and when I apply it to my desired folders, the size of the icons is always 32x32 px. When I try to appear it on large icons view, it's still on 32x32 px. It's so frustrating.

Hello.
My question is how can I customize the folder icons on a portable drive like a flash drive? I've learned how to change the drive icon itself, but I want to change the folder icons within the drive directory so that the set icons appear in whatever PC it's connected to.

I can customize a folder icon by right clicking the folder and selecting properties customize change icon... But this customization only appears on the original system (computer A). When I connect the drive to computer B, the folder icons revert back to the default folder icons. Obviously, computer A retains the setting information, but how do I make the drive retain the settings information so that it displays on computer B like computer A and so on and so forth?

Thanks for the help!

Okay, just a disclaimer: Although I consider myself fairly noobish, I'll understand WHAT to do when it's explained to me, there are just certain things I'm not sure HOW to do. But with that said, here's my predicament:
I like to make custom icon for my various folders. I'll create an image in Photoshop, save it as as a .gif file, and then convert it to an .ico file after that. I have created a specific folder where I keep my custom icons, so that when I want to want to change the icon on a folder, I naturally right click and then go to Properties --> Customize --> Change Icon --> Browse, and then I just locate the folder where my custom icons are stored, and select the one I want.
But here's my problem:
Just to use an example, let's say I create an icon titled "Example.ico" which I assign to a folder. But then I change my mind about how I want this icon to look, so I redesign it. I delete the first icon file (permanently, using Shift+Del). Just to make sure that it's gone, I hit "refresh," and the folder to which this icon was assigned is now a standard, "blank" folder. After I have made a new custom icon, I also call this "Example.ico", but when I try to assign this NEW icon to the same folder, the OLD design shows up.
I know that if I call the .ico file a different name, or I store it elsewhere, the new design will show up. But I have my reasons as to why I prefer that certain icons have specific names, and are stored in a specific folder.
I understand enough to gu... Read more

Question: my custom CD

Hi I was wondering if anyone can tell me if I can make a custom CD on windows. I was able to get my XP CD and slipstream it with SP2 but would I be able to do this with some of my most common used program. I know you can get these CDs from manufatures that go with thire system, like if its a HP, they will have thire own cd with OS and all drivers and programs or if its a tosiba they will have thire own. So I would just like to know if there is a way I can do that with my XP cd SP2 and some of my program like MS office and photoshop ect ect. Can someone please get back to me it would be greatly appreciatede.

Thank You

Answer:my custom CD

You can't include applications with a Windows installation disk. Computer manufacturers appear to do this by creating a restore disk which is not the same as a Windows installation disk. You can do something similar by using an image creation utility such as Acronis True Image (http://www.acronis.com). You would install Windows and any applications and then create an image of the hard drive or partition(s) which you would use to reinstall or restore your system. This would be used instead of the Windows installation disk.

If you only want to include drivers, you would need to create an unattended installation disk which is a bit involved for the average home user.

im thinking of building a computer, nothing fancy or top of the line just something to replace an old Dell computer i have.
i looked up a few components and i wanted to know what you guys thought about them. tell me if you guys have read any bad reviews or had any bad experiences with any of these

-Antec Nine Hundred Steel ATX Ultimate Gamer PC Case
-Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe Green nVIDIA Socket Am2 ATX Motherboard
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.1GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 89W Dual-Core Processor (Does the L2 Cache make a big difference? what would be better? This, or a 2mb L2 Cache but running at 3.0GHZ???)
-CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 X 1GB) PC2-6400 800Mhz 240-pin CL4 DDR2 Dual Channel Memory
-Geforce 9800 Gtx+ 512MB GDDR3 *im not sure about this one... im new to Nvidia so i have no clue what card is the card for me
-RAIDMAX RX-630A ATX12V / EPS12V 630W Power Supply * this also im not sure of. anybody recommend a better one??

For the rest i have like hard drives and the Drives i just want to know about these so if anybody has any advice or input on these it would be appreciated.

A lot of those components are good and will do you fine. If you are not going to utilize SLi then I suggest another motherboard. It would help us to know two things:

2. What do you want to do with this PC, i.e. gaming, school work, etc?

Hi mankaI cannot really offer you advise on what components to use, but i can suggest click here I have purchased a computer from this company and was really impressed with it. The system itself and the service i recieved was so much better than other comapnies i have purchased from. The main reason i bought from them was because they will build a system to your specification. Like you i also wanted the option to upgrade the system at a later date should i need to. The great thing about this company is that they will allow you to do this without invalidating the warranty. Even if you purchase the upgrades from another company. They dont seal the cases so you are free to replace and upgrade any of the components. I have never know a company to do this before but think it is a great idea.Overall i am extremely impressed with both the company and the system, have a look at their website theres some great systems all reasonably priced, but id give them a call to for advice, their sales department an really good, not like typical pushy sales guys.Hope you get the system you want!!!

Have a look on Ebay and see what similar rigs are selling for. Then look at the components and see what price they fetch. Only you can decide. Also take into consideration post/packing costs or if it will be 'collect only'.
Second-hand goods with no guarantee do not fetch anywhere near their original purchase price.

Answer:My Custom PC

Is your copy of XP, OEM or Retail? If it's retail you won't need a copy of Vista as you can install it (the XP you have) onto as many PC's as you want. If it's OEM you need a new copy of an OS, whether it be XP again, or Vista. OEM copies can only be installed on one PC. What do you mean about USB drive? If your talking about a USB harddrive then I would get a new internal one.

Question: My custom PC

Hello all,

I recently bought a new computer and had it custom made to what i wanted it to be. I have a few questions about it though.

First off i will tell you what it is.
It is made up of the following hardware:

Mobo - Asus m3a76-cm pci-ex 1gb lan
Processor - AMD Athlon II x2 215 2.7ghz dual core 45nm, AM3 2mb Cache
Cooling - Spire Kestrel-King II AMD 64 fan
Ram - 3gb (3x1gb) ddr2 pc5300 667 dual channel
Graphics - GeForce 9400GT 1gb PCI express 16x dual head, tv out
optical drive - 22x Lite On DVD +-RW dual layer
Case - Cooler Master Elite 310 with side window and front usb
power supply - Logysis 480w ATX power supply

OK so here are my questions:

1. What are your overall thoughts of this system?
2. Can i overclock it and if so how much while still being stable?
3. With the fan i got do you know how cold it will be?
4. What the heck is dual layer?
5. Will the 480w power supply be enough for all this?
6. In the picture i chose this case because it looked good, was cheap and it had lights. Will it come with the lights or do i have to add them?

I ordered it online and it has not yet come
Thanks for the help, and all suggestions, comments, and questions are welcome.

Answer:My custom PC

The power supply will handle that system, although i don't know anything about Logysis PSU's. You should be able to get 700Mhz to 1Ghz OC from that CPU with ample cooling. Dual layer is a technology that lets you burn data to two layers of the DVD that sit atop one another. Different light wavelengths reach the upper layer (and 'burn') data, than do the lower data layer...(thats the very short version)
as far as the "what do you think?" question, i guess that depends on what you paid, and what its intended use is. It is not going to be much of a gaming machine with that GPU. but other than that it really goes back to what you are expecting it to do.

I have a strange problem every time I have a been on the internet, I have a short cut on my desktop which says custom dic, if I click onto it it does not open if I delete it it comes back. It does not appear to be doing anything but its getting on my nerves.
I will try and add a screen shot

Answer:Custom dic

Seems you stumbled upon an odd issue. Good news and bad news. Its a dictionary file related to Microsoft Office or similar but I can't find any information about removing except to possibly remove any Office items from your startup and some registry editing, which seems like a bad idea. If it makes you feel any better, it is not a dangerous file so you could ignore it for a while.

I did find this you can try assuming its an older copy of Office. It does not apply to Office 2010.

-open microsoft word.
- click tools at the top of the page
- click options
- click the spelling and grammar tab.
- click the custom dictionaries button
-click the new button and choose a location to store the dictionary and
choose a name
- click the save button
now select the new dictionary you just created then click the change default
button.

Question: New to custom pc's

I just built my first computer and I dont know a whole lot but I know enough. I dont know anything about overclocking or how to get the full potential out of what I have. I have a AMD Athlon 64 x2 4600 and 2GB of Corseair dual channel 6400 ddr2. I think this thing is slow as mollasses. Anyone interested in helping me out?

Answer:New to custom pc's

1. Why do you feel it's slow? That system should be fairly fast if you don't have a million things trying to run in the background.

2. Overclocking is overrated. All you will get out of it is maybe a few percent faster and usualy a lot more heat and instability. I forgo it, and I am a hardcore gamer who can always use more performance. Performance at the cost of reliability is stupid.

anyone know of a free program that i can customize my windows with? i tried google'ing but all i get is trial versions and stuff. i wanna change my themes/start menu etc.

Answer:custom xp

I don't think there is any, at least that I know of.

I know that there's a whole suite of stuff from Stardock, but that's not free. And then there is StyleXP, but that's not free either, I think.

Ok I don't know if it's the os or the hardware but my friends computer is having problems.

Hardware...
MB - Asus m4a77td
RAM - 1Gx2 mushkin 996602
HDD - 640GB WD
CPU - AMD Phenom II X3 720
PSU - 550w Rosewill
Video - MSI N250GTS TWINFROZR

So sometimes when the computer is left on and the monitor goes into power save mode, the computer freezes up and won't come back. And the other problem is when we try to play sims 3 the computer just randomly shuts off. I was looking at other forums and some people said that sometimes hardware is undervolted cause the MB just guesses unless you enter it manually.
Here is some screenshots from cpuid(i guess i can only post two at a time so i'll post a couple more times to get all the information on there). Please help

Question: Custom PCs

Anyone who makes custom PCs or made their own PC list the parts you used for the PC.(The companies and models of each part) Everything from the Motherboard to the Mouse and keyboard

Answer:Custom PCs

Hi
I finished my new rig about 2 months ago heres the specs
P4c 3.0 GHz
MSI 865PE NEo 2 board
1GB Kingmax pc3500 RAM
1 Western Digital Raptor HD (37 GB 10k rpm)
1 Samsung 120 GB hard drive (8 mb cache 7200rpm)
Coolermaster wave master case
9600 ATI graphics card fro Sapphire
MX500 logitech mouse
cooler master q keyboard (for the look is alui like case)
Phillips 17" TFT screen with DVI input
Creative 2.1 speaker
Lite on DVD/CDRW combo drive
Lite on 8x DVD +-RW

Thats about everything but I do have a few upgrades in mnd over the next few months, firstly to add a second WD raptor in RAID 0 for the main C: drive possible upgrade of the mother board to an ABIT IC-7 max 3 as I am having a bit of a problem with the RAM on this mother board (and cause it should make the computer faster). The graphics card is low spec cause I don't do much pc gaming and what I do do doesn't need high graphic card plus the new breed of graphics cards are almost here making the older models like the 9800pro much cheaper.

Hey there! WittyWidi here.
Anyway, I'm building a custom machine. I want to get Windows 8.1 for it. Windows - Microsoft Store U.S. Here, I can probably see the right thing. However, $119 is a big amount, and it says

Important: Windows 8.1 full version is for Windows 7 users only. Currently running Windows Vista or XP? First upgrade to Windows 8. Upon installation you can update to 8.1 for free.

, which makes it sound like you NEED win 7 to get 8.1 for this price. Can I use this with my custom box with no prebuilt OS?
Thanks,
WittyWidi

Answer:Win 8.1 on Custom Box?

Clear as mud huh? The way I read it is, if you are running XP or Vista and want to do an "upgrade install", you'll have to upgrade to 8.0 first. Then do the free upgrade to 8.1 though the store. Windows 8.1 will not let you do an upgrade install from XP or Vista, only 7 or 8.0. It states >Windows 8 upgrade is for Windows Vista or XP users. Upon installation you can install the free 8.1 update available through the Windows Store.

If you are buying the full Retail version and not doing an upgrade install you can ignore all that. A full Retail version will let you clean install on your new hardware. Assuming the hardware is compatible that is.

Question: custom RDP port?

I tried to change the default remote desktop port from 3389 to some other 4 digit number.

I did this via regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Terminal Server
WinStations
RDP-Tcp

I setup that port correctly as a port forwarder in my router. The original 3389 was working fine. However, the new 4 digit one is not strange enough (port forwarder is 'ok' according to one of those port forwarder checking sites). I tried to RDP from one network to my IP (confirmed correct) like this:

myipaddress:1234

1234 = being the actual port number I set up.

Of course, I do already have RDP enabled on both W7 laptops.

What could be the cause of the invalid connection? It was working fine on 3389 by for extra security measures, I changed it to something else.

I did restart the laptop as well.

Answer:custom RDP port?

Did you change it on both machines?

And make sure that the Windows Firewall acknowledged allowing that port to be open for RD sessions on both machines as well?

I have been procrastinating for months online whilst saving up voucher 'incentives' from work paid as commission. I require a full system (monitor/keyboard etc) for gaming/internet and beginner music production at a later date.I have 500 pc world vouchers but I am also prepared to spend an extra 400+/- cash to get some future proofing/upgrade ability.Could I buy a base system custom built and use the vouchers for peripherals and upgrades but I would like some advice if anyone is willing?I have been considering a good dual core for more affordability with top end graphics or try to keep costs down on a good quad. What would you do if you had these vouchers? Many thanks!

Answer:Branded/Custom or both?

I suggest you contact PC World and ask them about the exchange value of the vouchers.i.e. Ae they only for a new computer,Can I use them to buy add-on's( printer, fax, software etc).As for Future Proofing- There is no such thing-- You can get the best machine for your needs today, and tommorrow a newer macher, better graphics, memory etc may come out.If you are condidering music production you may find Apple-Mac, have better hardware / software, but it may cost you more.Terry

I like to place folders on my desktop, instead of individual icons. Since I have a lot of apps I frequent, I prefer to group them into folders based on category. To be brought up in Windows Explorer.

Problem is ... the icons for every folder looks exactly the same ... like this:

Is there any way I can take any image file that has small enough in terms of pixel dimensions (possibly even create one of my own), and map it to a folder or any other app or file I might want to map it to? That way, I would have a unique icon for ...

"Games" shortcuts
"Emulator" shortcuts,
"Word Documents" shortcuts,

And so forth?

Answer:Can I have custom icons?

Right-click the folder that you want to change, and then click Properties.

In the Properties dialog box, click the Customize tab.

Under Folder icons, click Change Icon, and then do one of the following: Click an icon from the default list, click OK, and then click OK again.

Hopefully someone can help me with this, I suck at graphics stuff.

I have an nvidia geforce gts 360m. On the nvidia product page it says it can support up to 2048x1536. So, I'd like to add this as a custom resolutions..but every time I try, it doesn't pass the custom mode test...and I don't know what settings to mess with to get it to work.

I'd really love some advice from someone that knows what they are doing

I have the most up to date driver.

Answer:Custom Resolution Help

I believe the reason your not passing the test is your exceeding the native resolution of your monitor/screen.
Even though the card is capable of your posted resolution doesn't mean that your monitor/screen can handle it.
You can check out this tutorial on how to force DVI/HDMI resolutions and refresh rates.
Caution exceeding your displays native refresh rate can damage the display. Fabe Force DVI/HDMI resolutions and refresh rates

Hey Guys

My name is Hamza, and I have started my passion in building computers and other things. As I am planning to work on my first build very soon, and I just need some help on buying the parts. So yeah, please forgive me if my questions are stupid, as I am just learning.

The Situation: So I am planning on keeping the motherboard from my own HP desktop for now, and it is a N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix) mobo. Here are the specs http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02560084. Also please don't say that this is a crappy motherboard, because I know it is and I just want to keep the budget low. So the motherboard says that the ram upgrade asks the following:
Memory upgrade information

Dual channel memory architecture
Four DDR3 DIMMs (240-pin) sockets
[*]PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066)
[*]PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333)
Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
Supports 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB DDR3 DIMMs
Supports up to 16 GB on 64-bit systems
Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit PCs
*32-bit PCs cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory.

So please note the bold text. So it tells me that I need a DDR3 DIMM (240-pin) ram, which has the speed of PC3-8500(DDR3-1066) and PC3-10600(DDR3-1333). As there is a wide market for the DDR3 240 pin rams, I am available to many options. But the problem is: Do I have to have the speeds of PC3-8500(DDR3-1066) and PC3-10600(DDR3-1333) on the ram or can I use any speed?

That is my main question. I also have other minor ones.

Will it matter if I choos... Read more

Answer:Solved: New to Custom PCs!

That motherboard has 4 slots(color-coded) and supports up to 16 GB of RAM.

It supports the use of these DDR3 DIMM modules:

240-pin DDR3 PC3-8500(DDR3-1066), 1.5 volt, CL=7, unbuffered, non-ECC

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6050 600006125 600000261&IsNodeId=1&name=1.5V

240-pin DDR3 PC3-10600(DDR3-1333), 1.5 volt, CL=9, unbuffered, non-ECC

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0006126 600000261 600006157&IsNodeId=1&name=9

You should install matching speed and capacity modules for best performance.

------------------------------------------------------------

You didn't mention if you plan to install Windows 32-bit or Windows 64-bit.

If it's Windows 32-bit, there's no need to install more than 4 GB of RAM because it won't be recognized and used.

Answer:How do i add custom add-in powerpoint

I don't understand all your requirements1) I am able to make ribbon icons - but what do you want to do with the colours? are you looking to fill a shape with those colours or perhaps the text with the colours?2) Where are you templates stored and what do you want to do? import them into your current presentation?3) When you click on what table? where is this mystery table?4) Why cant you just use the default printer to set your print size? it pointless recreating this if the feature already exists

i have this custom case that was recently given to me. its a Diablo ATX Mid-Tower Case. i was wondering if the motherboard from my dell dimention 8200 would fit in it? it has a elite group motherboard in it currently but i dont have the ram for that motherboard currently. so im just wanting to move the one out of my dell over...would that work? i dont wanna get it out and then learn that it wont fit or something..thanks.

Answer:Building a custom rig.

Is the picture I have linked to what your Dell looks like inside?

http://greensburgpcmobile.com/itemsforsale/dimension8200.aspx

If so, then it is a custom size and position motherboard and so can only be used in the model of PC it has been designed for.

Dell do this quite a lot with their business range.
