Can't save xls document to Network drive

Question: Can't save xls document to Network drive

My boss has a special network folder mapped only to his PC. He keeps a lot of xls and doc files that are for his eyes only. One of the xls files refuses to save, the error message states that the "file is currently in use". No one else has it open, or even has access to it's saved location.

He can still save a copy with "Save As.." but he can't even manually delete the original file afterwards.

I'm thinking it might be a hung process, but I wanted to see if someone here has a solution/explanation. I'm going over to mess with it now, and will check back later to update.

Preferred Solution: Can't save xls document to Network drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't save xls document to Network drive

mjm, you might want to take a looks at "file streams"

File Streams

as this could be a hint of why he can't save or delete the file.

Save to Google Drive allows you to save any web content directly to your Google Drive through the context menu of the browser.

In the settings you can choose where the contents get saved, I recommend navigating to your Google Drive and creating a new folder for all Saves with this extension which makes it easier to organise later. Or you can change the location from the dialog that appears once complete.

You can save all types of contents including;
- documents (pdf / docx)
- images
- webpages including HTML5 audio and video (html / webp / webm)
- audio and video (mp3 / mp4)
- archives
- software (exe / msi)
and much more!

Simply right-click over the image or link contents and Save to Google Drive.

As seen below, Save Link to Google Drive will save the executable to the cloud.

No downloading or re-uploading required to Google Drive.

This extension has been available for many years, it's not new, but most may overlook it's abilities.

I have a home network with a couple of PCs. My desktop is currently on W10 build 10586, while my laptop (which this is about) obviously just got updated to 14393.
Previously I could open a document stored on the laptop from the desktop, edit it and save it back.
Now suddenly I can only open the document in Read-only mode, and I can not save it back to the laptop. I get a message 'You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator'.

What do you mean by "refuses to save it"? What error message(s) appear? Can't write to the CD? Can you burn any new data like songs, or new pictures to this CD burner?

I use one drive to backup my excel spreadsheets for my small business. I do all the changes on my laptop, save a copy to one drive, then my husband is able to access the spreadsheets from his ipad while he is on the road. What happens if he has a spreadsheet open on his iPad at the same time that I am saving an updated version to one drive?

Answer:Can I save a document update to one drive while the prior version is open on another device?

technically the updated verion should sync. Unless your husband makes changes to the existing or open sheet and saves it after you have done your changes it might update to the last one. Try one sample document to your needs and see how you go? YMMV

Hello,
I used mail merger to create 25 letters to different locations and different people. The source used for the names and address's were from an excel file. I used "Edit Individual Documents" in order to get all the letters in one document. Now the problem is i need a backup of each letter on my computer and i have no clue if its even possible to save each page in the master document as a unique document. If not, is there a way of saving each unique document of a mail merger?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am trying to edit somethings in a XML document and save it as a notepad or wordpad document. I open it with notepad or wordpad and it allows me to make the changes. However, each time I save it after opening it in notepad or wordpad, it then reverts back to been a XML document.

Answer:XML document won't save as notepad document?

In Notepad/Wordpad, choose Save As and save it with a .txt extension, or else make a copy and change the extension of that from .xml to .txt

I have one user that when she tries to save a modified document to a network drive gets the error message, drive is full. If you look at the properties of that mapped drive on her PC you see that free space is 36kg. However at another pc you look at the HD space free and it tells you 31 GB. This user is part of a group that has this permission and this user worked fine up to about 2 weeks ago. I have looked at this users permission even added that user's name directly to the folder and child folders as full control but still receive same message. Is there a limit that is set somewhere as to how much HD space 1 user can use up or access???? something. Any ideas???
The network drive is on a win 2003 server and the workstation is a win2000.

Thanks for any suggestions,

hello all,

am having problems "save as" to a network drive f: (see below) , thanks for checking out my post.

a friend of mine accesses many files off of a drive f: on a remote win98se system, she is using XP home. There is no problem accessing opening or altering files the problem comes when for instance an edited word (newreport.doc) file is edited and then you attempt to "save as" a new file name (i.e newreport2.doc), back to the f: drive. When you do this the following error/dialog occurs.

"the folder f:newreport2 isn't accessible or the folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password"

there is no folder i am trying to access or save, it is a Word file? It is like the OS is recognizing or thinking i am trying to access a folder by the name of the document i am trying to save. So it is seeing newreport2.doc as a folder trying to be opened not a document trying to be saved. Any ideas why this would be? or how to fix it?

i would greatly appreciate any info. thanks so much and have a blessed day,

Boutros

ps. There is a round about way to save the file, by copying it from the f: drive, to c:, editing, "save as" and then copy it back to f: but i hope to find another "real" solution. thank you

Answer:Can't save file using "save as" on network drive f: ???

I had a user call me with that situation. I found out via google that it's related to one of MS's patches and prevents saving files in word from an XP machine onto a Win98 host.
If you put in the exact error message into google, you'll find the fix. There are a couple work arounds. To my recollection the one that worked was something similar to when clicking Save, you get the error message, click the cancel button and while holding the mouse button down, move it off the cancel button, then release the button. Something like that, but it works.

We have a shared file on the network that several people access at work. We are having a major problem that is causing some concern. No one is able to save the file after they make changes. The message is "Your changes could not be saved to 'name of file' but were saved to a temporary document named 'name of temp file'. Close the existing document, then open the temporary document and save it under a new name."

We have checked the rights and permissions and everyone that is working on it, has the proper permissions.

You guys have bailed me out before and I am hoping you can do so this time. I recently changed jobs and am registered as a new user - glad to be back. Thanks all!

I have a client running Win XP. They are on a domain running Server 2008 with a few mapped network drives to their data.

Specifically there is one mapped drive which is the User's data folders with everyday running docs, more specifically running MS Excel '97 and Word '97 (yeah I know...time for an upgrade hey? I know...). My problem with only one of the users is that he is able to open the documents on the mapped drive, specifically with .wbk files (the Word Backups), and even allowed to make changes to the files, and even save it. But as soon as he wants to "save as" the file to give it a different name, then Word crashes, the whole system hangs. Not able to get any other response out of it than opening up Task Manager, but even when I try to run some commands from it or end certain task, itself crashes too.

I have no idea what could be going on. Well, I was informed that the system had a virus on a couple of weeks ago, but I have been given no details thereof as I think the person is trying to hide what damaged he has caused by "fixing" some problems found.

This is what I have done so far:

1.) I have done "sfc /scannow"
2.) Malwarebytes scan (find log attached)
3.) HiJackThis (find log attached)

Please tell me if there's anything more you need.

Thanks

If they go to a Windows XP PC they can save to the root of the P:\ but cannot do it on a Windows 7 PC. They get the error message "You can't save here. Please choose another locations."

Answer:Unable to save to root of network drive

For security reasons this is true on both Vista and Windows 7. You can save to my documents and other file locations in C but the root is protected and for good reasons. Although you can probably take ownership and make it work it's not advised. Take Ownership Shortcut

hi:

I have a question.

Lets say you are going to download something from the internet, it doesn't matter what. When you click on the link a dialog box comes up with the location where you would like to save it. For example the location always comes up as "My Documents" as the save location by default.

Is there a way to change that ? so When it opens it goes to the location that you have specified.

Thanks

Answer:When you save a document -

To specify the default download directory for the Internet Explorer

Start Regedit
Go to HKEY_USERS \ .DEFAULT \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer
Add a String value called Download Directory
For it's value, enter in the Directory where you want your downloaded files to go

hope that helps...

I'm using XP Home SP2 and Word 2002 (screen says "Microsoft Office XP" when it opens, hope that makes sense!)

Something is all backwards in prompting me to Save Changes. First of all, I usually never see the prompt.
I opened some documents - only to read them. I did not change anything at all. When I closed, some of the docs (but not all of them), there was a box asking if I wanted to Save The Changes I made to This Document? I said No because I didn't make any changes. I want it to stop doing this. Also, it only asked that for some of the docs. For other docs (also unchanged), it didn't ask.

I've never seen this box before, usually even if I've made a million changes, I'm never prompted to save the changes or not.

I would like to have this confirmation box come up when I DO make changes! Very handy! But not have it come up when I don't make changes. Very annoying!
It seems to be all backwards, asking to keep changes when I don't make any, but never asking to keep changes when I DO make them! So basically I want things the other way around.
Is it possible?

I want to be able to save the documents I've written in Word directly to a pdf, in much the same way as OpenOffice.org allows you to do.

Software such as Distiller($5000) and Acrobat($300) are out of the question due to their steep price tags. Are there any good, free (read: no ads or spyware) programs which will allow me to save a Word document directly as a pdf? Are there any reasonably priced programs which can do this?

Answer:Save a document as a pdf from Word

Sort of an odd question since you answered it yourself. OpenOffice.org is most likely the best one for the job if price matter since it's free. staroffice could also do it mind you.

I'm sure there are most likely some other ones out there but they'd most likely have even more conversion issues then OpenOffice.org so I wouldn't recommend using them.

I have Windows7, Word 2010. When I complete a document in Word, I want to save it in a particular folder which I created on my Desktop in order to keep my work organized. How do I do that? Thank you.

Answer:Save document in different folders

Select the office button and then go down to SAVE AS and highlight it so the menu opens up. Select the file type you want and then you should see another window open up named Save As.

From there select Desktop and then the folder you wish to save your file in.
If you need to you can select on the right side of the menu the folder with a star on it to create a new folder on the Desktop. Double click it and hit save and you have saved the file in the new folder you have just created.

Good Luck.

I'm hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction with what appears to be a problem with Word.

I have a Lotus Notes application that stores a lot of information, and part of that is output to a word document for printing. A user opens a document in Lotus Notes, presses a button and a Word document is created with the relevant information in it. It does this by getting Notes to launch a Word template file with the layout how we want it, and passing an XML file with all the required values from Notes so that a VBA function in the Word template can read this information in. It's quite a convoluted way of doing things I'll agree, but I am just working with a a system that was developed a long time ago and in most cases it works well.

When the user is done making any changes to the Word document, there is a macro button in Word that they press to mark the document complete. This makes the document readonly, sets a few custom properties and then saves the document.

In most cases, if you were to run through the process, everything works fine. Sometimes however, a small number of users are finding that their work isn't saved. If for example they launch a new word document, make changes and then close word, then go back to that document and make more changes before pressing the Complete button in Word, they find that the next time they go to the document it's in the state before their most recent changes, which are lost.

G'dayI'm designing a site and I want viewers to be able to download my PowerPoint presentations. How do I set up the link to open the "Save" window rather that just opening the presentation in the main frame?I'm using DreamWeaver 4ThanksBen

Answer:"Download" / "Save" document links

for the presentations and put them in it.Create individual hyperlinks to the files, and when a user clicks on one of them their browser should open the 'Save' dialogue. Powerpoint presentations can't be viewed unless the user's computer either has PowerPoint installed, or has the (free) PowerPoint viewer, so you might consider placing a link to the appropriate download page on the Microsoft site.

Answer:save document from my printer's scanner

After you scan the document or whatever you're scanning, you will see the image on your screen. Look for an option to save the picture. When you click save or save as, you will be given an option to name the file and save it in different formats. if you click the little down arrow next to the file type, you will see the options. Jpeg is a very common picture file extension. Then look at the drop down menu that will show you what drives and folders are on your machine. Choose My Documents and click save.

Answer:when I save an MS word document it disappears

I'd like to clarify a few things.

When you "save the document", are you transferring it from a flash drive to the My Documents folder on the main drive?

OR

Have you opened the document and then saving it to "My Documents" on the main drive?

OR

Is the "My Documents" folder one a folder on the "Kingston stick"?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I save 7 pages of a magazine story which I scanned so they appear under just one icon in a folder? (instead of 7 icons)

Answer:How to save several pages under one document icon

If you've scanned them they'll be images, which are necessarily one file per image, which means one file per page. What you'll have to do is build them into some other document--for example a Microsoft Word file or a PDF file. That way you open the document (with Word, Adobe Reader, etc) and get the pages one after another in the order you set up. After you've made the document you can delete the original scans.

Hi Folks
I have Microsoft Office 2007 on my laptop. Also there is a trial version of Office 2010 which I dont want to use. I've just created a flyer in Publisher 2007 and want to save it in the format of Publisher 2007. There doesn't appear to be an option to do this. I just get "Publisher" or "Publisher 2000". When I save as publisher and double click to open it, it asks me to activate Office 2010 or go online and buy it.
Luckily I was able to open the document by opening Publisher first and doing it from there. Is there a way around this? With Word docs you can chose save as Office 2007.
thanks

My printer is connected, printer icon is in tray, and it is recognized by my Belkin router manager-- but when I try to print I get a screen that says 'save the file as an *.xps document'...and it won't print. I don't want to save it - I want it to print.

I ran a search for 'xps' and the list came up with XPS Viewer and XPS Viewer Manifest. Both are located in C:\Windows\system32\xpsviewer. This has been after I downloaded something to scan my drivers for outdated ones. When I discovered that you have to buy the software I uninstalled it. I never had the problem before that.

It is on my Dell laptop, running XP Home Edition.

Answer:get 'save the file as an xps document.'..won't print

Can you print a test page?
What printer is selected in the printer dialog box? (Almost certainly the XPS document writer)
Select "Print" from the file menu to see these options.

Hi, I think many has this problem as I found it in other forums without clear response. Sometimes my Internet Explorer 9 does not like Adobe Reader 9. So I open a document pdf which has no security issue, and I just click on the save a copy icon. The icon responds with a virtual click. And that's it. Does not appear the radiobox where I can chose where and how to save. Nothing happens. And I can't find the downloaded pdf in any temporary folders either (I can index system folders and do a search there). So I have to go to another computer where I do the same in Firefox and it works, I can save the pdf file. But this is not OK that I have to use someone else's computer. I just wonder why these intelligent guys who create IE and AR can not make something that works? And since years this problem has been existing. Any idea how to patch it? Cheers and happy new year !

Answer:Save a copy of a PDF document open in IE9 does not do anything

In IE9, enable the classic menu-bar which is disabled by default.

Now when you open a PDF in IE9 via the Adobe Reader plugin, just click File >> Save as. It will save it as a PDF file with a default filename.

Hi,
I hope this is the correct place to ask. I have spent the day editing a document which i stupidly just opened from an email attachment in my hotmail account and proceeded to edit. I diligently saved it throughout the day but did not use the save as function.

I have tried to open a similar document and choose save as to see where the document would have saved but this does not seem to work in Windows 7. I have tried looking in my 'temp' folder but this is empty.

Does anyone know how else I could retrieve this document? It is the only version i have...i really ought to have looked after it better!

Thank you in advance,

Sandra

No problem this is an easy one.

Go to search type in back up and restore Pick a date prior to your problem. And then like magic, everything is back the way it was when life was good. This will affect all your personal documents, but not system settings.

but first try this one. Go to search pick a phrase that is in your document and it should appear.

Hi,

A friend of mine has MS Word 2003 and though it always used to work, a couple of days ago, it simply began to refuse to save anything. She is typing something for school, and when she tried to save the document, the "save" dialog box disappears for a second, then pops back up.......nothing else can work, of course, so long as that box is there........she tries repeatedly to save it, but it will disappear and reappear immediately each time. The only way she can do anything is to remove the name in the "name" area and then just click on the "x" at the top right of the dialog box. At that point, everything she's typed disappears and the MS Word page is blank again.

I've never heard of such a thing, but I'm not real familiar with the Office products. Does anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?

I have acquired a copy of a precious book, printed in 1937, author deceased. I want to scan it/ copy it somehow to my computer and save it as a 'book' or document. pdf? Adobe? ...like those I come across on the internet (Scribd).

I have a digital camera and can take the pictures but, how do I save them and put them together as a document and not a bunch of pictures?

Over this past one year I have noticed more and more frequent BSOD crashes so I started paying close attention to what I was doing. Since then 100 percent of the BSOD occurred almost immediately after trying to save (via clicking the save icon, ^s (shortcut), or even save as). I found the probability of BSOD decreases a lot when you are doing a save a new filename. In fact I can't recall a single time where saving to a new file caused a problem. Overwriting an existing file seems to trigger it. The driver causing the BSOD is NTFS.sys. Note, it doesn't happen on each and every save, the average is like 1 of 7. My work-around has been to avoid saving early and often (which is a serious problem with Microsoft Office which isn't the most stable application around) and when I do save make sure it is via save-as and to a new filename. Just tack on a number or letter prefix. I mostly use Word ands Excel and have noted they both have this problem. Other applications may not have this issue, but then I don't overwrite too many files so that may be the reason for the lack of BSOD.

It's hard to say when it started. I allow Microsoft to update my PC as updates become available. I was never a fan of Microsoft roulette having been burned, but a couple friends insisted Microsoft cleaned up their act so I gave it another try. On the up side some of their updates did correct a couple minor issues. I believe one (or more) of their updates is responsible for this issue. Likewise I was hoping ... Read more

It sounds like a permissions problem as though you have access to open the file, but not modify or save it.

Is this on your work network or a home network?

Do you know how to use permissions and folder/file security?

and there is nothing.

We did a search by words in the document itself and nothing.

It wasn't saved on a Floppy, CD or USB drive nor a network drive.

Where can it possibly be?

Is there a way to get Word 2000 to save the printer settings in with the saved document?

Example: My favorite word processor, Lotus Word Pro, will save such things as which pages were printed last, whether it was printed duplex or normal, and which printer it was printed to. So, if I open the document, print it to my HP5 in duplex mode and then save the document, the next time I open and print that document, it has those same settings already set.

Two people use my computer, Nathan and Michael.  Both are Administrators.  When Nathan is logged on his Word 2003 documents are saved in:
C:\...Nathan\Documents.  When Michael is logged on his Word 2003 documents are also saved in:  C:\Nathan\Documents.  Obviously, the way it should work is Nathan's Word documents should be saved under his log-in and Michael's documents should be saved under Michael's log-in.  I can't make that happen.  Here's what I've tried so far:

I go to Control Panel, Tools, Options, File Locations.  When I click Modify I can indicate a different folder for saving Word documents, but I can't change the location "Nathan."  Also, any change I make just adds the new extension to the existing.  Example:

C..\Nathan\Documents    Modified to:  C..\Nathan\Documents\Documents, etc.  Whatever I choose is added onto the existing location
C..\Nathan\Documents.

I hope I've explained this clearly.  Any Word 2003 experts out there who can help on this one?  It's really got me puzzled.  Thanks in advance.

Answer:Changing save document location in Word 2003

Hello,

the first question that ' you cannot change the location " Nathan"' , do you log out when you change the location under Michael adminstrator.

As for another question, did you try with another file name. I mean you can try with different file name, like C..\Nathan\Documents\Tutorial

Hope my answer can help you a bit. Thanks!

Need help trying to save a word 2007 document. Am running Windows Vista. I have been working on this document for the past couple of days, a high school maths investigation with lots of equations and graphs copied over from 'Autograph' a 3d graphing software. I have been able to save it with ease with all this stuff on it until an hour ago. When I press CTRL+S it opens up the save as box (even though i've already saved it before). Then when i press save in this dialog box the box closes for a half a second before opening again without me pressing anything. I do it again and again and notice the little loading bar that tells you it's saving in the bottom right hand corner of the document gets stuck and then stops when the box opens up again. I've tried to rename it and this doesn't work. i copied it into an old word document and then saved that document and that document wouldn't save either. i got rid of it off that document and the old document saved perfectly. I closed it just to check it was actually not saving and it isn't. Is there something wrong with my document? or is it word? please help!

Hi all,

I've had this recurring issue with Windows 7 and I can't seem to work around it.

I often do a little bit of office work at home and I generally email myself the files I'm interested in while I'm still @ work, sign into my company Outlook webmail when I get home, download the files, and work on them @ home.

Now, I've noticed something strange with Windows 7 and it's baffling the hell outta me!

When I open a file directly from an attachment, I can edit it fine etc., but when I attempt to save it, it says I am unable to save to the specified location! I've tried a "save as" and created a folder with no permission restrictions whatsoever and it still refuses to save! I cannot save it anywhere!!

If I save the attachment first and then edit the saved attachment, all is fine - it seems to me like a user access issue, but I can't be certain.

Any ideas people?

Hi, I am sorry if this is a very frivolous request. But it is more for convenience why I am asking this as it does get somewhat annoying.

But when I chose "save as" for a notepad .txt document I have been writing all the time the option automatically comes up as

*.txt

I then have to type in the name of the document I wish to save it as. However what I was wondering, or more hoping, if there are actually any tweaks or registry changes I can make so when I click 'save as' in notepad. The notepad 'save as' screen automatically pops up and assigns the first line of text inside the .txt file I have just typed as the possible name of the document to save.

This is similar to how Microsoft Office uses the 'save as' option, and for time saving and convenience I was hoping someone may know if there was possibly a way to set Notepad to do this automatically too.

Thanks
Anthony

when I try to print any documdent with a print command, I only get anoption to save the document as a tiff file. Saving the documnet and then trying to print it gives the same "save as" option again. Printer is HP photosmart 6100 series.

Answer:printer will not print only gives option to save document as tiff file

Looks like your default printer is not your HP but someone else that produces a TIFF file. If you go File->Print you should be able to select printer before you print. If you just click on the print icon, the default printer is used and you cannot select another. To fix it click on the search icon on the taskbar and type devices, click to open Devices and printers. Then right-click on you HP and make it default. If it still produces a TIFF rather than printing, the port is set to File, rather than USB. Right-click on the printer and select Printer Properties. Click the Port tab and then from the list of ports check the box next to USB. Another way would be to delete the printer from Devices and Printers, disconnect it and then reconnect to be detected again and assigned the appropriate USB port.

Hello,

I want to save the View settings for a certain document to show the two pages side by side. Check out the attached picture.
I press View > Multiple Pages to have them sit side to side and save the document. (Notice how the zoom setting in the bottom right corner states that it's at 121%). When I create a new unrelated document, the zoom is set at 121% still, so I zoom out to 100% and do whatever I need to do with this new document.

If I press the One Page setting (above the Multiple Pages setting) and re-open the original document, the view setting for this document is still using the "global" Word 2013 view settings and no longer shows the two pages next to each other. So when I open the first document again, the zoom setting went to 100% & the pages are no longer side by side.

How can I save specific view settings for certain documents, and not interfere with the default Word view settings?

Thanks

Answer:How Do I Save A Document-Specific View Setting In Word 2013?

Word behaves as a word processor, not as a publishing package - when you are in "print layout" view - you are looking at the document as if it were to be printed, the view is not saved in the document.

You can cheat by using a page layout side by side (or in 2 columns) on a larger size of paper - say A3 size landscape for 2 portrait A4 pages - this information is saved in the document file.

hello all,

hope today finds you well. A friend of mine is having a problem on a network drive f: She can access and open files on this drive, make changes to documents and save them back to the f: drive with no problem.

but when she edits a word document for instance and wants to use "save as" and save the edited document to her local drive she gets the following dialog...

"the folder f:anyfolder/anyfile isn't accessible or the folder may be located on an unavailable volume or protected with a password"

She is using windows XP, the server is using a windows product of some sort, she is not sure which version. i would guess a 2000 or XP variant of some sort but do not know for sure.

Others on the network do not have this problem. It sounds like some sort of permission problem perhaps. I sure would appreciate any help, wisdom or points in the right direction.

thanks for taking the time to check this post!

Please create a document X with the automated field savedate in it. save.
Create another document Y wit also savedate in it and create a second page by CTRL+ENTER  and save.
Now drag document Y into the internet explorer and after it is loaded, click on back in the browser. You will see the message

It could be that when you drag and drop a file into the internet explorer this will not open.

hello all,

posted last week in regards to a "save as" problem on a networked drive, thanks for your guidance. I have since found the problem was misstated or misunderstood by me originally. So here is the real problem.

a friend of mine accesses many files off of a drive f: on a remote win98se system, she is using XP home.

Boutros

ps. There is a round about way to save the file, by copying it from the f: drive, to c:, editing, "save as" and then copy it back to f: but i hope to find another "real" solution. thank you

Hi,
I have run up against an issue where I'm not sure whether things are working as designed. I have a home network - not a homegroup - that is composed of three machines, two running Windows 7 SP1 and one running Windows 8.1.

I login on the Windows 7 desktop and click on Network in Internet Explorer. I then choose to open the Windows 7 laptop, which presents two two network folders - one for all Users and the other for the one user on the machine, who is Abby.

The security settings for the User folder lists -
Everyone
System
Administrators (Abby-PC\Administrators)
Users (Abby-PC\Users)
All have full control with the exception of Users (Abby-PC\Users) which has read and execute.

The security settings for the Abby folder lists -
Everyone
System
Abby (Abby-PC\Abby)
Administrators (Abby-PC\Administrators).
All have full control. In addition, the Abby folder checks the box to include inheritable permissions.

When I open the Abby folder, I find that I have read only access to its documents. I am unable to either edit, create, or delete individual files.

When I open the User folder, however, and navigate to Abby's documents, I find that I have full access and can edit, create, and delete individual files.

I am at a loss to explain why I am restricted when I open Abby's folder and what accounts for the discrepancy between the two.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,
Thanks,

Answer:Can't edit network document

You mean User share instead User folder ....correct?
You mean Abbey share instead Abbey folder ....correct?

(I know the Abbey share point to C:\users\Abbey)

Good day,

i downloaded Google drive to my computer, now i want this folder to be shared to the rest of the people working with me. i did share the file but it won't open on the other people's side. it gives an error message stating "you don't have permission to open the folder"

Could you please assist.

Answer:Document Sharing on a Network

Check out this link:

http://gappstips.com/docs-tips/view/98/protect-your-google-drive-folders-by-setting-permissions

I think this part should help:

"A folder permission is set exactly like a document permission. Select the folder in Google Drive/Doc view and choose More --> Share. Under Who has access set the Edit / View permissions, and add any individuals or groups you need."

I'm trying to move a document from my laptop to my desktop via my home network. But lately, I'm getting a window that asks for my account name and password to perform this transfer. It didn't before. I did switch routers recently, though. Still, I'm entering the password for my account name correctly, I think, but the password isn't accepted. How do I fix this problem? Is there a laptop networking setting that lets me bypass this step? I don't get the same window when I move documents from my desktop to the laptop. Thanks.

Hello, my supervisor opens a previous excel sheet, modifies it and saves it (like a template). I cannot access these sheets, so I assume the file has properties that deny me access, saying "Access denied. Contact your administrator."

If I open a new excel sheet on his computer and save it, I can open it on mine. He uses excel 2003 and I am using 2007; I cannot find any properties that prevent me from accessing these files.

What might be be happening?

Answer:Denied Access to Excel Document on a Network

It will be your Network Permissions. Your Network Administrator will have set it so you don't have access to a folder/file using the Network not the File Properties.

Hi All,

I look after a small workgroup consisting of 6 systems. One of the workstations have a directory share that the others access. All systems are running XP with service pack 3 and all have MS Office 2003 installed. The issue I'm having is when my client tries accessing a word document from their workstation, the document takes a substantial time to do anything i.e. open, save, edit text etc. After a bit of research, Office Validation Tool looks like a likely reason for this problem. Everything I've indicates excel, but this effect word too?

Any help will be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance

Answer:Credentials required to transfer document over network

How are you entering your account name and password? Are you using a Microsoft account on either computer (or both?), are you using your Microsoft account email as the username? What is the name of the folder you are in when you open a command prompt? That is the real "username" of your account.

I am running word 2000 sp3 on a windows XP machine. And it seems very slow opening a file on the network. Up to 20 seconds. On a Window 98 machine it opens right up. Had anyone ever run into this before?

I am starting to think that windows 2000 was the best operating system not XP!

Hi guys, I just started my first job last week and my boss has a problem which noone in the office has been able to solve, if I can solve it, I would undoubtedly make a very good impression, no?

Now, he has w2k installed on his laptop (formatted NTFS), with a network share (also NTFS) on a 2000 or NT4 server - I'm not sure which. When he opens an Excel document that is saved on the share, Excel opens but the screen stays white and he has to end the process. When he opens the file again it works just fine and the document opens.

They first tried reinstalling Excel, then Office, and then they formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows, so it can't be the software or the OS on his machine.

If anyone has come across this or a similar problem, or has ANY ideas, please let me know, it would be so much fun if the new blonde girl can show 'em all

I have got two PCs (Desktop and Laptop) connected to each other through crossover cable.

They can see each other and they can ping each other.

Desktop has got Microsoft office installed on it,,,,laptop has not got installed Microsoft office.

Desktop has got a word document file called: invoice.doc

From Laptop (does not office installed) I tried to open the invoice.doc on Desktop,,,,but I could not.

Is this normal ?

Do I need to install Microsoft office on laptop as well ?

Answer:Open a word document via a network from a PC does not have installed office

Yes, you need the program on both machines (or whatever machine you want to view it on).

Sharing a file does not share the programs associated with it, nor is there a way to share most applications like office.

Have a brand new Epson Workforce 610 printer- really nice, all the bells and whistles, and I got it cheap (99 bucks)... At first it was great, have the drivers installed on two computers and they both worked fine, and prints came out fast and clear over my home network, wirelessly. Both computers have XP, one being Home (SP3), and the other being Media Center (SP2). Well, all of a sudden, my Home computer just stopped printing, and the Media Center one works fine...

Every time I try to print a file on my Home computer, no matter what file, big or small, it will always bring up the Epson print status window and say 0/0 pages, and the bar will not fill. After a few moments I get a bubble from the task tray that says, "This document failed to print". I bring up the event manager by clicking that bubble, and it says "Error-Printing" under Status. The trouble shooting options have not helped me one bit, nor have Google searches yielded any relevant results. I have updated all my drivers (reinstalled them and updated them), and everything checks out fine- the printer connects and is ready to print and scan- my printer has a 3/3 bar connection and is connected to the correct network and everything, yet it still will not print from this computer.

This is very infuriating, as every printer I have ever owned has given me loads of trouble. The College Humor video, "Your Printer is a Brat", describes everything perfectly.

The problem is I am unable to acess her folder in the my docs on her drive says the drive may be full or write protected I cant copy anything or rename it. PLease help I need to get this and yes she did not make a back up.

Answer:Help please need to get a document off drive

XP's built in security has probably restricted access to her data unless logged in as herself on the original machine.
You probably only need to take ownership of the folder.
