Outlook needs approval to start then wont keep reading pane on bottom

Question: Outlook needs approval to start then wont keep reading pane on bottom

Hello all, I have two MSO2003 problems..

Problem 1:

Win7 HP.. when I start Outlook 03, a popup asks

Do you want the following program to make changes to this computer:

File: Outlook.exe
Publisher: MS
File origin: hard drive on this computer

This has been happening for a while.. I dont remember when it started, but it seems it began when the reading pane thing below started..

Problem 2:

The reading pane will -not- stay on the bottom of the sceen when Outlook starts up.. I change it time and again from side pane to bottom pane and it just doesnt stay bottom when Outlook is restarted..

Any ideas? No viruses, or malware/spyware on the machine.. MSE updates/runs full scan every night.

Thanks, TJ

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Outlook needs approval to start then wont keep reading pane on bottom

Hi TJ

Problem 1: This relates to UAC - User Account Control - settings:
What are User Account Control settings?

User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings

When should I allow programs to make changes to my computer?

I'll take a look at your other problem and see if I can find anything relevant.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits with a monitor in portrait.

For that reason I would like to get the preview pane in Explorer at the bottom of the screen for having a readible preview for example of a pdf (because the new 16:9 screen are getting so low, and thus so narrow in portrait).

Is this possible.

In that way one could also choose to have a filmstrip of the pdf :

- Landscape monitor : pane right : full pdf view
pane bottom : filmstrip of pdf pages.

- Portrait monitor : the opposite

Answer:Getting preview-reading pane at bottom of screen.

I resolved this using XYplorer instead of Explorer.

I'm having a weird problem. All of a sudden, the reading pane in outlook went away. I've tried setting it to both settings (Right, Bottom, and even Off). Tried going through Programs and repairing office ultimate. Also uninstalled outlook from there and re-installed, but still won't show.

Any ideas on how i can get it back! All I see is the list of emails, and then I have to double click to open in seperate window and read/respond/etc.

TIA!

Do you by any chance have Dell MediaDirect on your system? If so, try uninstalling it, reboot and check Outlook again. I had the same problem until I did this and it worked.

Hi Guys,

I have been doing some research and it seems that the reading pane in outlook isnt that safe. In most of the sites i visited it said it was better to turn this off so you dont open your self up to viruses. Can somone confirm this is true before i send an e-mail round my organisation telling them to turn it off.

The reason i started to look into this was when one of our users started to recieve loads and loads of spam mail i have sorted the problem wit that now but because she had her reading pane on it seemed to infect her computer but if she had to double click on the e-mail to open it this would not have happend. Can anyone please confirm if this is the case also.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:How Safe Is The Reading Pane In Outlook?

Though turning it off is recommended, good email AV should be sufficient.

And, no, double-clicking does not protect anyone. Opening the mail by any means has the same effect.

A good AV with a "resident shield" is sufficient in most cases, but the added email scanning feature of AVG, for example, that scans incoming mail, adds even more security.

The point really is that mails from unknown persons or with suspicious titles should not be opened at all.

I'm using Outlook 2003 (on Exchange) on an XP Pro machine. I have it configured to give me 2 email accounts. I have the reading pane activated on both accounts.

I used to be able to print (clicking the print icon or using the menu) from the reading pane without actually opening the email for each of the two accounts. Now, I can only do it from one of the accounts. The error message I get when I try to print from the second account is: "Message headers cannot be printed. Download the complete message and then print."

The fact that I used to be able to print from both, but now only from one leads me to believe I inadvertently changed a setting. Someone suggested it may be a security setting, but I have no idea.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have the reading pane activated in Outlook 2003. I've noticed that when any email is shown in the reading pane, the header information is followed by approximately 10 blank lines before the message text is shown. This happens regardless of the location of the reading pane (below or to the right). If I open the email, everything looks fine. The blank lines are annoying because I usually have to go to the reading pane and scroll down to see the entire message. I should also add that the blank lines are fixed, so when I scroll through the message the white space stays there and doesn't scroll. Any solutions? I'm running XP SP2.

Thanks,
Dave

Every time I create a new folder in Outlook 2003 the Reading Pane "Hide header information" option is enabled by default. I know I can select View / Arrange By / Custom / Other Settings and then uncheck the "Hide header" box, but this is tedious if I'm setting up several new folders.

According to Microsoft no global change can be made to this value in the Reading Pane. Does anyone know of a tweak or utility which can set the default to show the header in the Reading Pane view?

Is there a way to globally diable Outlook 2003's reading pane?

Answer:Disabling Outlook 2003's Reading Pane

Well, it USED to be that you could do a command line switch:

outlook.exe /nopreview

But I don't know if that still works in 2003.
And I don't know what you mean by globally--all views on one PC? all PCs?

Hi,

I'm using an Acer Windows 7 machine with MS Outlook 2010.

When I left-click and hold on the scroll bar of the reading pane
when viewing a long email, and move the mouse/scroll bar
up/down, the email doesn't scroll up/down with me as I move
the scroll bar. When I release the mouse, then the email moves
to the new position of the scroll bar.

How can I get Outlook 2010 to smoothly scroll, like it does every-
where else?

Many thanks,
John

This event just started happening, I think after the July 10 MS Updates so it could be related - but maybe not. It crashes, and when restarts the reading pane is turned off. If I turn it back on, certain emails will make it crash again. Here is the message I get when it crashes:

I find the 100% setting for reading emails in Outlook 2010 too small and would like to set 150 or 200% as a default but I can't find any facility for this and I have to adjust the setting manually every time. Can anybody advise me please?

Answer:Outlook 2010 reading pane zoom default

Hello again urbanspaceman1

You have two options for doing this:

Option 1:
Create a new email type something and go to the "zoom" feature on the top right.
Select the percentage% you want the fonts to be displayed at.

Note: The fonts may not appear large when you are viewing them on the reading pane or double click open the email. For that view you will have to always manually zoom it yourself on the right corner in the bottom but you will be able to see the fonts large when you hit reply after doing the 2 points mentioned above.

Or

Option 2:

Change your DPI settings following this tutorial:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/443-dpi-display-size-settings-change.html

I will search for similar stuff.
Till then, HTH

Every since I have been using Outlook 2007 I have always been able to view the html e-mails. last week the suddenly disappeared. I did my research and have tried every suggestion I seen. new profile, trust center, etc. One ting I do know that if i start outlook in safe mode everything displays as it use to. So there has to be something blocking the html pictures. when I click on the pictures it takes me out to the senders web site and shows it to me so the links are there. this is starting to drive me crazy, any help would be appreciated

Answer:outlook 2007 doesn't display html in reading pane

If it works in Safe Mode, it means one of your Outlook Add-ins is blocking HTML.

I can't seem to disable the "Reading Pane" in Outlook 2003. Under "View" > " Reading Pane " I get no response when clicking on "Reading Pane."

I am under the impression that it is a good idea to keep the Reading Pane "off" so as not to "open" automatically emails which may contain viruses.

Any suggestion, on how to turn off the Reading Pane in Outlook 2003 when my Reading Pane "switch" seems to be disabled, would be appreciated.

Howdy,
Been searching for this one for a bit. Found loads on Blank Reading Pane however this is slightly different.

Have a home user who some messages are not displaying in the reading pane. These are mainly from Facebook and some various ones from their work colleagues.

When choosing reply message is also blank however selecting Office Button > Editor Options > Display > Hidden Text (checked) the message content appears.

Why then is the message content not visible in the main preview pane? These are just the simple message notifications such as from facebook.

Looked at fonts / mail format (tried all variences) to no avail.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Ok Im totally baffled as to what to do. The internet help desk doesnt know what to do, and I cannot find anything out on the problem I am having in microsofts knowledge base. Ok here is what is going on and all that I have tried. A couple of days ago I started having problems with OE in which I was getting a message that read ..Couldnt open address book, OE is not configured correctly please reload outlook express. So on the advice of others I dumped my outlook express and internet explorer. I then under advice from friends of mine who work at an internet help desk, I downloaded and installed the IE5.5 service pak. I installed it and still had the same problems with outlook express. So one of the things that my friends told me to do was to go in and delete my address book and then outlook express will make a new one. I did this and it took care of the error message that I was getting. I can send messages and recieve them but they wont display in the preview pane. Every email now comes in as an attachment and the only way to see them is to click on the attachment then either open it as an html file with IE or test only with word pad. If anyone can help with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Answer:Outlook express5 wont display messages in preview pane

If you have gone into the options and set it up there and also unde view there is only one other place where the settings are stored other than the registry.

In your profile. Delete it and create a new one.

It shoud be in C:\windows\Application Data\identies Delete the folders inside the identies folder

My MS Outlook (2003) reading pane has simply disappeared.  I've tried to get it to come back by selecting "bottom" "right" or "off" under the options.  I've tried restarting MS Outlook.  I've even rebooted.  No luck at all.  Any other suggestions or possibilities as to where it might have gone?  It doesn't appear to have been minimized or "hidden."  I'm honestly out of things to try.  Any help is appreciated!

Hi,
I must apologize in advance for any forthcoming ignorance, as I am a forum newbie. Using Win8.1, I am trying to relocate the Details Pane in Explorer from the space wasting right side to the well fitting & familiar bottom.

Fix I found is here: How To Move Details Pane To The Bottom In Windows 8.1 File Explorer

Has anyone had any experience in general with this tool? Haven't been able to find out any more jnfo either way othter than the link.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Better use Old New Explorer:

It has some other features but the one you are searching for is one of them. It doesn't always make the hack but it is much safer than patching the shell32.dll

Yesterday afternoon my mail app suddenly decided that I no longer wanted the reading pane off to the right side unless I am in full screen mode. If I open the window wider (but not full screen) it will either let me have the preview screen or the bar off to the left with the list of accounts, but not both. If I open the mail app in full screen it has both the preview pane and the ribbon on the left.

Question: outlook wont start

Hi. I have a computer here which is a friends machine but it has a problem.

First some background:
He has had the machine about 3 years. It runs on windows ME, IE 6, everything patched up to the hilt, and its outlook which has the problem. He has been very security conciouse by using AVG, Zonealarm pro and cloudmark spam protection.

But he has upgraded to the zonelabs security suite and problems have started to occur. The main one is now that outlook just wont start up at all. it just hangs with the box in the center but if you ctr+alt+del it it doenst say it isnt responding. Other problems are that it sometimes doesnt shut down properly and just hangs. Another once only fault is that it brought up an error which was apparently with 'kernal.dll'

Hes sick of it and thrown it through my window with a note 'fix it' crudely writen on it so any help would be much appricated.

Today 11 Nov 2015, I received a host of updates. At least 10 of them were for Microsoft Office. I downloaded and installed, did the mandatory reboot everything seemed fine until I tried to open my outlook 2010. The start screen came up for a couple of seconds and then it shut down. There is no way I could get it to start. I ended doing a system restore, and that seems to have fixed the problem. Looks like MS have created a problem at least on my machine with the Office updates. Not sure if anyone here has experienced this.

I hate why questions.

Re-format
Re-install
Windows 2000 Pro SP4
Office 2000, SP3
THEN, Outlook 2000 setup in Corporate mode

When I open a folder, or create a new folder or sub-folder, the preview pane appears. I have turned the PP off, from the menu bar.

I have changed the quick launch toolbar, adding the " /Nopreview" switch.

1. How do I add the switch to the desktop icon's Outlook icon?

2. How do I add the switch to the start menu's Outlook icon?

3. WHY is this happening? As best I can remember, it did not happen prior to Sept 2005. Sept 2005, I had to R & R. After the R & R, I encountered the PP issue.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Outlook 2000 & Preview Pane again

I found this, which solved the preview pane function, from the desktop icon.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832561
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\Shell\Open\Command
4. In the right pane, right-click Default, and then click Modify.
5. Type the path for your Outlook.exe file with the /nopreview switch in the Edit String dialog box, and then click OK.

For example, type"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE\Outlook.exe"/nopreview in the Edit String dialog box.
6. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
7. Restart Outlook 2000.

But the from the start menu, when I open Outlook 2000, the preview pane is still available and is on when I create a new folder or sub folder.

I have quite a few machines on my domain that have started acting strange. All have windows xp pro, and windows office 2003. Some are doing ok, but some, including mine, will not respond when you hit the navagation pane buttons. If you hit the calender button you don't get your calender in the view window and all you get in the navagation pane upper window is the option to share your calender with someone. All of the other navigation pane buttons are doing the same thing. We have HP machines and clones and a few dells and this is happening on all of them. I have loaded the latest updates and service packs for outlook 2003. This is bugging me to death. Any help would be appretiated.

I upgraded to Office 2013 a number of months ago and have a problem I can't find the answer to that has finally driven me crazy enough to ask about.

In the navigation pane you have the mailbox with all it's sub folders (inbox, sent, deleted etc.) I collapse the mailbox and work primarily out of PST folders and the Inbox, Sent, and Deleted links in the Favorites section above this.

Randomly the mailbox will expand so I can see all these folders again. Not sure why - I'm guessing it's from things like an email auto-saved to Drafts - when the mailbox expands the main PST folder I use drop out of site and I have to scroll down to them (such a big hassle right?)

Outlook 2010 had no issues with this, you collapse the mailbox it stayed that way until outlook was closed and opened again or you manually expanded the mailbox folder list. Is there a way to keep the mailbox collapsed?

Answer:Outlook 2013 navigation pane help

I haven't noticed this myself, but maybe if you add these other folders to favorites, it might help. I mean Drafts for example.

Hi all,I read in a recent posting the you should not have the preview pane open to prevent viruses, I thought you had to open a message first to allow a virus in and the preview pane does not open a message, am I right in thinking this?Regards,Sapins

Answer:Preview Pane in Outlook Express

No you are very wrong. The preview pane will allow scripts to run and as such your pc can be compromised. Safest to turn off the preview pane. You can check emails with antivirus software and even view the contents of them with the right button on your mouse. That way you can see who it is from and what the message is without even opening the email.

I'm using pop/smtp email with Outlook XP. I also use the preview pane to view emails. It seems like it takes about 5-10 for the message to show up in the pane.

In Outlook 2000 it was almost instant.

I thought that because I have big inbox, outbox, deleted items, etc it might be why it's taking so long, but even on new machines with barely anything in there, it takes a long time.

Any ideas why?

I am running OE v6 on XP+SP2, and am up to date on MS fixes. I connect to the net via a DSL line and a Netview Router (with built-in h/w firewall). I long ago disabled the OE Preview Pane (for well-known reasons) and everything works more-or-less fine.

I wanted to demonstrate the Preview Pane (and explain why it's a bad thing) to a friend, but when I clicked View/Layout, the entire bottom half of the resultant box was grayed out, so that I could not enable the pane.

I figured that this was something to do with the IE Connection/Security settings, but playing with these made no change.

Has anybody else seen this problem, and know the fix?

TIA

Answer:Outlook Express Preview Pane

Hello EJDC,

To get the preview pane back in Outlook Express try this....

Open Outlook Express > View > Layout > tick the box at the bottom that says "Show Preview Pane" > Apply > OK.

That should bring it back again for you.

Let us know if you have any problems, or other queries/concerns.

Copy and paste it back here and someone will be happy to review it.

I just put in a new hard drive and installed the latest version of Office 2007. I kept the data and archive files from Outlook 2003 so I could import them into Outlook 2007 and get back to business. However, that did not happen. It was able to read and bring up most of the data, but I am missing some folders which are critical.

The critical folders are folders that were created manually. They were used to store email messages that came in that were important. They were simply dragged from the Inbox and put into that folder. There were also folders within that folder. I'm not sure if these folders and subfolders were in the Inbox or not. They may not have been.

The way I imported it was by going to TOOLS>ACCOUNT SETTINGS>DATA FILES tab>and pointed to the old PST file.

I also pointed to the archive.pst file as well, but later went to FILE>ARCHIVE and pointed to the old archive.pst file in there. Bot ways did not reveal the folders that are needed.

Is Outlook 2007 not able to read all data from Outlook 2003 pst files, or is there a fix for this?

Please advise.

Answer:Move from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007 not successful; not reading certain folders

I purchased a new Notebook with Office 2007 installed and copied over my Outlook 2000 pst file. I also had manually created folders for filing important emails. Mine were sub folders within the Inbox folder. Everything copied over, but I could not see the manual folders at first until I double clicked the Inbox folder in the side panel and then they spilled out. I would look for them in that panel and double click anything there starting with Inbox, Sent etc. Also try doing a search for any subject or address of an email you may have saved.

When copying over the pst file I think everything is copied. Appears you did not just copy contacts for example, but the complete pst file. I think the folders are there as Sub Folders, just hidden within one of the main folders such as Inbox.

G'day Oh Knowledgable Ones..

Please excuse any descriptive anomalies in this enquiry, because I'm overall a PC dummy of 73yrs of age, and definitely not a geek! ...
I have recently been obliged to buy a new PC tower which comes, as it would now, with Win7 and Office 2010.
My enquiry is to do with the Navigation Pane in Outlook. I trust that's the right description for the list of email files running down the LHS of the Pane?
There are three main files there, which can be opened up into files, and sub-files, when created, within them ... (much like OE used to be in my old WinXP equipped PC ... whose Hard Drive bit the dust!)
These three main files are Outlook Data File, my wife's Email Address followed by my Email Address.
Both the Outlook Data File, and my wife's Email Address folder, when opened, list the following sub-files in descending order automatically - Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Junk, Outbox, and Search files. The Outlook Data File also has an RSS Feeds file ... whatever that's used for? ... sitting between the Outbox and Search Folders File.

However ... My Email Address folder, when opened, only shows Inbox ... into which everything goes, both inwards and outwards, with the exception of Drafts, which appear in the Outlook Data File's Drafts file, where, as luck would have it, they can be opened and sent from there later. Any deleted files go into a subfolder titled Trash, which automatically appears as a sub-file... Read more

Answer:Navigation pane enquiry in Outlook 2010

Hmmm ... Perhaps this is the wrong area to ask this question ... I'll give it another 3 days and then give up, as apparently nobody knows the answer, or possibly doesn't care ... or it can't be fixed, but I'd like to have known about it. After receiving no replies, either +ve or -ve, although so far there have been well over 200 views, after that I'll give up on this site entirely and just ask my local PC Guru.
A pity!

Got 3 computers running win7 pro. All three computers have office 2010. On two of my computers Outlook 2010 opens exactly where I want it too - Tasks-Outlook-Microsoft Outlook. In the right pane is a list of my tasks. In the navagation pane is My Tasks with sublisting of To-Do List and Tasks. In the bottom of the navagation pane is the two icons I checked Calandar and Tasks. Nothing else is in the navigation pane which is exactly what I want

in Outlook 2003 Navigation Pane options -

1. is there a way to tweak the options and add shrotcuts to any folders?

2. Contacts - "My Contacts" is there a way to tweak it and add an icon to a diffferent contacts folder.

I know that all of this can be acheived inside of "Shortcuts". You can save a few clicks if were able to tweak the "navigation pane options" and just add shortcuts there.

I'm using Windows XP, and I recently had a problem that required me to fix a registry problem by using the recovery console and re-installing restore points from several week's back. After doing this I had to reload IE version 8.

Everything appears to be normal now, except for one issue.

When I try to access my "work" email from home, using Outlook Web Access, it appears to hang before displaying my emails in the middle pane. The progress bar moves very slowly and never finishes. My "folders" are displayed properly (on the left pane) and this provides an indication that I have new emails, next to the Inbox icon. That is Inbox(14), for example.

However, the final step in the process appears to be displaying the list of old and new emails in the middle pane. (I use the right pane as my "reading" pane, but this is blank, also).

I already went into my Internet Options >> Security tab and set everything to default. I can still access all other web-sites that I normally access.

Any clues on what to look at first?

Thanks!

Tim...

Outlook 2010 Prox64. When viewing emails I noticed what I think is called a "People Pane" at the bottom of the message. It can increased/decreased in size with the use of an "arrow" on the right side.

The second installation, on a separate HD, had a People Pane area on the ribbon which allowed me to eliminate the annoying little thing. The 1st install doesn't have this People Pane area so the Pane is still a pain.

Maybe it's a "Beta" thing, but I'd like to be paneless.

Uninstall/Reinstall didn't do it. Any ideas appreciated and rewarded with warm feeling of helping.
