microsoft security essentials not working and windows update error

Question: microsoft security essentials not working and windows update error

Hi forum,

I'm having some problem about a week ago with Microsoft security essentials bugging out on me and not opening or updating. Basically the message I got on opening MSE was windows cannot access specified path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the file. Upon reading this about a week ago, I think! I proceeded to foolishly downloading a Zeroroot access program and a few MSE alternatives. Since then I have still been unable to re-install MSE by deleting all components in the registry.

The error code I get with trying to re-install MSE is 0x80070643

Having then unistalled the zeroaccess program and the previous alternative antivirus programs, I still cannot get MSE working, and I now have a windows 7 update error. The new system update I believe may be to do with security as-well!! The error code on doing a windows 7 update is 80070005, and it did cut out at 9% every time. (although now I think it is just 0%)
Can someone please help me as I have had a very successful streak of avoiding viruses by always usin MSE. I don't want, and can't afford to get a virus attack, not to mention Im runnign windows 7 ultimate so I need the windows 7 updates too because the ultimate can be dodgy sometimes. Nb the update I cannot do is 1.4mb but I am anticipating windows will throw me a new update any day soon which could be anywhere from 30mb to 200mb and it could fail all of it leaving me prone to attacks.

I can post my specs, attach some log files or run any program through support on here.

Preferred Solution: microsoft security essentials not working and windows update error

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can not get Windows 7 Update to work at all.  I receive a message that the service is currently not running and to restart the computer.  This does nothing.  I have gone into services under "services.msc" and windows update is not listed as running or stopped.

I came across this issue while trying to get Microsoft Security Essentials to update.  I keep getting an error code.  Of course now that I am writing this and try to get the error code to reference, the update works.  The MSE not updating is a chronic problem for me.

I am still fairly new to the forum, so please let me know if there is additional information, or I make a slip-up.

Thank you.

Answer:Windows 7 update and Microsoft Security Essentials not working properly

So is MSE updating now as well as Windows Update? Do you still have the problem or did it somewhat fix itself? If it continues to happen, write down the error code as it is printed on your screen and post it here.

I use Mozilla Firefox... the 1st answer in the MS Help says that I would have to make Explorer my default browser. Why? Is there a way around it? Plus if I did this I would lose all of my bookmarks, temp. files... and other stuff that I would not want to lose.
Any alternatives?
I'm using XP Prof. 32 bit

I have an old Dell Dimension 8300 Desktop. Here are the specs:Pentium 4 @ 3.20 GHz w/ Hyperthreading4 GB RAMNvidia Geforce FX5200 Video CardWindows XP Professional SP3The problem is with Microsoft Security Essentials. When I try to update definitions, I get the update error 0x8024400a. The error says it is an Internet Connectivity issue, but I can access all websites on the computer. I have tried all of the methods listed here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941The issue still isn't fixed. I can install the definitions updates if I download the full offline definitions, but the program can't update on its own, it has the error listed above. I have tried reinstalling the program, but when I tried to uninstall it, the uninstaller hanged up and I just had to kill the process. The program seemed to be uninstalled (didn't show up in Add or Remove Programs, no notification icon, shortcuts, Program Files folder), so I just installed it again.I recently upgraded this computer from XP Home to XP Pro. But I only installed MSE after the upgrade. The antivirus I had before MSE was McAfee Total Protection, and I uninstalled that before the upgrade.Has anyone encountered this issue? Any help is appreciated,RMT2

Recently, a Windows update arrived called “Microsoft Security Essentials Client Update Package - KB2544035”. Since then my computer started malfunctioning. Whenever, I try to install the update, everything goes fine, and then suddenly goes blank and the desktop returns (but the Windows update screen had closed). When I open Windows update, it shows that the aforesaid update is not installed. And when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it and asks to delete it. I can’t even open Microsoft Security Essentials manually from Program files. Things return to normal on System Restore. But the Microsoft Security Essentials appears ‘potentially unprotected’ and asks for a full system scan. But before the scan is complete the Microsoft Security Essentials screen closes and the desktop returns once again. And, once again, when I try to open Microsoft Security Essentials shortcut on my desktop, the machine is not able to find it.

This problem has occurred twice already, and I’m very frustrated. I tried to full system scan in Safe Mode and that has not helped.

Please help.

Microsoft is adding Microsoft Security Essentials to Windows Update as a Optional update. No word yet on when or if the update will ever be a required update. Some companies has complained saying if this is a required update Microsoft would be cornering the market on Anti-Virus. Companies are also saying this could reek havoc on the personal computer since the user might already have an anti-virus installed. Most users have Windows Update set to Automatic so again this could be a very bad thing for the unbeknown user. We will have to wait and see how this plays out in the near future.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Now A Windows Update

They may wanna be careful doing this, as of now, a lot of software disables the windows defender service for some kinda incompatibility reason. I would hate to see what Microsoft installed software would do to the AV software, I know some AV software enjoys locking a system down if it ends up being disabled.

Hey peeps, just thought i'd give you all a heads up, got a notification from windows update telling me that there are new updates available, these updates are windows live essentials and microsoft security essentials.

These consist of several programs:

Microsoft security essentials is a new program developed by microsoft which takes a new look at windows defender, there's a new, cleaner interface, new icon, and seems pretty fast after the first quick scan... screenshot below:

live essentials is the same live essentials pack you get from the microsoft live site, not much new here, bing bar is included instead of the live search bar, that is all.

MrNeeds

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials - Windows Update

Thanks for the update.

MSE gave me a pop-up advising me there was an upgrade and inviting me to download and install it which I did. To be honest, I really didn't pay enough attention to the program (except when I got it a while back and set it up) so I don't really see much of any difference in the looks. I have noticed it does scan a bit quicker though - so an MS update/upgrade that actually improved things for a change.

I downloaded the whole Essentials 2011 Suite about a week ago or so. I like some of the changes and not some of the others. I preferred the Live Toolbar to the Bing toolbar - you could customize it more and could give more space to the search box (which I can't seem to be able to widen and think it can't be done). I also wish there were a way to turn off the alert just because I have pop-ups enabled - it should allow you to disable alerts for the items you choose to enable so if a real alert occurs you can notice it. While I like WLM better than Windows Mail, I'm still having trouble connecting to one of my newsgroups (but otherwise it works fine) - though I rarely use it except for newsgroups as I use Outlook 2007 instead. I'm on the fence about Messenger. It seems to take up too much of the screen now with details I'm not really interested in (but end up reviewing because they're there). I don't really use the other applications but downloaded them anyway so I'd be able to fire them up to help answer questions about them in the forum.

Hello! For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general. I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted! I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!!

MSE just had its real time protection turned on, as I apparently did not verify my Windows genuine status, even though I'm positive I did. I didn't see any button to run a check, so I tried to turn on real-time Security Essentials couldn't turn on real time-protection This operation returned because the timeout period expired. Click help for more information about this problem. Error code: 0x800705b4 So I didn't feel like dealing with this, and just decided to do an uninstall/re-install. When I tried THAT (via add/remove programs in control panel), I got this message: The Security Essentials Installation Wizard is missing a filter manager rollup package needed to complete the installation. To continue installing Security Essentials, you must first download the required package. (I click it, and nothing happens) I googled this problem, and found a possible solution on the Microsoft support forums, which was to do a Windows Update. So I try THAT, and even that won't even load, as I get THIS message: The requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context. Talk about annoying. Help is appreciated, because I really don't know what to do now!

Hello, I previously has Norton on my computer with an expired subscription. A Norton pop up kept appearing, the scan wouldnt run and my laptop kept turning itself off. I uninstalled Norton and the problem with turning off has resolved. I then downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials to use as my virus scanner. It installed OK but would not update. I posted this problem on another forum here: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/msestart/thread/84452f5d-bde2-46d9-afbe-4c2a582a4e3b and after following the instructions it started working. However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Now Security Essentials is doing the same as before, getting halfway through updating and stopping, and when I go to close it its says its not responsing, as does windows updater.

On the last forum it was suggested there may be underlying issues and after googling my problem I came across this forum which I am now going to use from now on. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this.

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue that I just noticed today. Originally, when I would click on links in Google, I would get redirected to some random advertisement site. That was a red flag to me, so I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and went ahead and deleted whatever it found. Then, I started noticing that my Microsoft Security Essentials is not working. It says "Security Essentials is not monitoring your computer because the program's service stopped. You should restart it now." When I click to start it, I get the following message: "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424." This raised another alarm for me as that usually is a sign of an infection, I believe. I then went to my control panel to check on Windows Update and noticed that the icon for it is just the red shield thing with an X in it. When I click to check for updates, I get: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I also noticed a little bubble on the Windows Update screen that says, "Find out more about free software from (null). Click here for details." I can't say that I've ever seen that there before, so it's a bit suspicious. Lastly, when I go to check on Windows Firewall, I see it in red and saying "Windows Firewall is not using the recommended settings to ... Read more

If it was all working okay a few days ago, the first thing I would try is a System Restore. If the System Restore does not fix the problem you could then try an uninstall and reinstall MSE from scratch.

Just installed MSE a couple of days ago. Immediately updated it and all seemed well. Today it won't update, giving me instead Error 0x80070422 (something about unable to start the update service). What gives? I've made no changes to the computer since installing and updating the program. And MS's online help is confusing to navigate.

Answer:Can't Update Microsoft Security Essentials

HI

Weird, is this the new version 2.0 of MSE?

Do you have any 3rd party firewall software installed if so what? if you disable it does that help?

Could try this from John Barnett (a respected tech writer and MVP)HERE

What have your experiences with it?

I have been running it since Dec 10th, I opened the history the other day and found two trojans one removed and one quarantined. This was after having run Malewarebytes and Superantispyware, so it seems to me to have a stronger male-ware section then either of those two. So far it is proving to be very good, now I wonder when MS with throw a price tag on it?

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials update

Did you upload the file to Virus Total to double check? I'm on avast home and I'd be dumbfounded if it warned me or caught two every month.

This could also be due to my boring computing habits. Don't mean to to say you are over zealous and don't surf safe LOL
Plus I assume your MBAM and SAS are free and scanners only, right?
Cheers..

This is a actually a sub-thread under a separate discussion on the Windows Updates forum.

In connection with an inability to receive and install Vista updates-in-general over the past three days, it seems that I cannot update the definitions specific to Microsoft Security Essentials. The last automatic update of MSE was July 12, and attempting to download virus and spyware definitions right from the MSE panel now fails unconditionally.

Anyone else with this problem, or anyone with experience in doing some sort of 'manual install' to get around what may be a temporary hiccup in Microsoft Updates for Vista?

Running Vista-64 bit on a Dell desktop; using MSE version 4.9.218.0. Thanks!

Hello again eloctrojim. I seem to be the only forum regular who is using MSE 4.9.218.0, and no I do not have this problem - perhaps because my Windows updates for the month of July were all successfully installed on Tuesday, whereas your system is still choking on them.

Try this: set Windows Update to "never check for updates." If you have disabled a Windows service, re-enable it. Restart the PC, then open MSE and try to manually update definitions via its Update tab (not by checking for Windows updates). Assuming this works, it might be a good time to try the solution for Windows updates suggested in your other thread.

First let me say that I am computer illiterate!  I have Windows 7 and I think I have a 64-bit operating system. . Security Essentials is not monitoring my computer. I get these messages: Your PC isn’t being monitored because the app’s service stopped.  You should start it now. Error code: 0x800703eb I start it and select full scan.  It appears to be scanning but when it looks like it's almost done I get this: Your PC couldn’t be scanned.  Cannot complete this function. Error code:0x800106ba This has been going on for several weeks.  This is the only anti-virus software on my computer. I don't know what to do.  I don't understand anything about computers or the terminology. I think I need kindergarten languageEdit: Topic moved from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

I actually really like it, and it has found several things and shut them down before they became problems. However, recently, I got a virus on my computer that actually shut it down and I haven't been able to remove the virus and get it back and running. Please help!

Hello,

I am having some trouble with Microsoft Security Essentials.  It is not working and will not allow me to uninstall it leaving my system open and unprotected.

When it first started, whatever happened disabled Essentials, Windows defender and Microsoft firewall.   I was able to get defender and firewall back up, however I can not uninstall or install Anitvirus software. When I go the directory for Essentials, all the files have a lock on the icon. and when I try and run it, it says it can not find the executable file. I have been running Malware Malbites and SuperAntispyware daily as I try to fix the problem but still have major issues.

I also  am having trouble with windows updates, everytime I shutdown, the updates say they are trying to install but hangs and forces me to hard boot the computer.

I have run and attached the DDS  files below.

How you can help me.

Hello!

My laptop only has Microsoft Security Essentials as my computer protection but suddenly, whenever I open the MSE program, a window pops out and it says "c:\program files\microsoft security client\msseces.exe The specified path does not exist.  check the path, then try again"

I tried uninstalling it but it only says "you do not have sufficient access to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials. Please contact your system administrator" and I am already registered as the system admin... so I don't know how to fix this.

Some days ago, I installed a free avast anti-virus so that I could at least have one anti-virus program protecting my laptop. I scanned the Microsoft Security Clients folder with avast but it only said that "some files could not be scanned" and when I looked at the results, the status of most it all are "error: incorrect function" or "error: the system cannot find the path specified" and avast cannot repair or delete these items.

Also, before, I have a Mcafee but I already uninstalled it after MSE incident

I do not have any idea how MSE was suddenly not functioning, but I suspect a malware that I have no idea how I got.

I am not knowledgeable in techy, computer stuffs but I read some of the topics here that have similar problems with me. I downloaded the DDS thingy and followed the instructions so attached here are the logs that I created a few minutes ago.

One disadvantage of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is that it uses Windows Update to update the virus definition files. If you disabled the Windows update for some reasons MSE won?t update anymore.
The MSE Update Utility can be used here to update MSE even if Windows Update is disabled.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Update Utility

Why in the world are you disabling Windows Update? Just set it to "Never check for updates" if you want to manually do it. But disabling Windows Update altogether is just stupid, honestly. Might as well not even run an antivirus if you turn off your first line of defense.

Microsoft Security Essentials, a core anti-malware service that helps protect consumers against viruses, spyware and other malicious software is one of the best antivirus i have seen in recent times. Its a lightweight, 100% free to every user running genuine Windows. Like every other Antivirus it needs to regulary update its definitions from the internet. But if you are on a PC with limited access or no Access to the internet , here is how you can download the Microsoft Security Essentials virus and spyware definition update file offline :
1. Make note of the Windows operating environment (32-Bit or 64-Bit) you are having.
2. To download the file for a 32-bit (x86-based) version of Windows, click the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=87342
To download the file for a 64-bit version of Windows, click the following link: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=87341
Just save the file on a USB stick so that you can connect the USB stick to the offline machine and then update MSE.
3. for Windows 7/Vista, right-click on the downloaded file and select Run as administrator. and for XP, simply double-click on the file and click Ok.
4. When the definition update file runs, a file extraction dialog box appears and . After the file extraction dialog box closes,Microsoft Security Essentials? virus and spyware definitions status is Updated.

An update to the Beta Microsoft Security Essentials software was released. The current version is 1.0.1500.0, identified as "Microsoft Security Essentials Product version update package - KB972958". At the time of this posting, there are no results in a search for KB 972958.
The most noticeable change in the version update is the updated tray icon showing a check mark on a green background when the settings indicate that the computer status is "Protected". Turning off, for example, the real-time protection results in the icon turning red with an X and the message that the Computer is "At risk".
Because Microsoft Security Essentials is still in Beta, it is expected that any other changes were bug fixes.

MSE's 1 time per day updating is puzzling to me. MSE says it's "up to date", even if there are updates waiting for it to download at the next check. That doesn't make sense to me? If MSE only needs 1 update a day to be "up to date", then why does MS put out 2,3,4 updates per day???

Why doesn't MS put out 1 update a day, and then MSE could download that update, and it would truly be "up to date" each day. MS feels that multiple daily updates are essential (or they wouldn't produce them), yet they program their AV to work the vast majority of the time, "out of date".

Something seems wrong here.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Update Concern

I'd find it annoying if MSE kept saying that it was out of date two-four times a day! A comparison is MBAM (free version), it considers itself to be up to date if it is updated once in every 7 days.

I suspect most of this has to do with MSE staying fully optional to avoid court cases from competitors.

Besides, you can always set MSE to check for updates before it goes into scanning.

i recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled my OS and then installed Microsoft Security Essentials. Everything was working very well, I was able to install Windows Updates etc, but then started getting the 0x80070002 error when trying to update MSE. I've done searches all over the web and nothing has helped. I did discover that if I turn the "Windows Update" service to either Manual or Automatic, instead of Automatic-Delayed Start it will update fine. However if it's set to Automatic and I reboot the machine it reverts back to Automatic Delayed start. If I change it to manual and then reboot it will stay on manual, however I don't think that's an ideal situation being then Windows Updates don't update automatically.

Does anyone have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

They use the Guest account. I just happened to log into the Guest account and got a pop up message saying that Microsoft Security Client User Interface has stopped working. When I closed the message I noticed that the MSE icon was missing from the Notification Area. When I tried to open MSE from the Start Menu I just got the pop up message again and MSE would not open.

I would add that I have no other anti-virus software running on my pc apart from MSE.

I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me

Hello. I have a dell dimension 3000 running XP operating system with a 70 gig hard drive 1.5 gig ram. My sister dropped this off to me because there was a "SLOOOW" issue when trying to do "anything" in windows.

I noticed that when I ran a scan using MWB that after 20hrs on a "quick scan" MWB was still in the temp folder ie5 temp files. I at that time stopped the scan and looked at the Hard Drive "Pie" It was 100% FULL I ran "clean-up" scan for well over 29hrs until it deleted every internet explore temp file and I regained the hard drive back to a normal 40+gigs of free space..

I then noticed that her "Virus Scanner" Microsoft Security Essentials was not running nor would it open. I uninstalled then re-installed with no success in re-installing

At this point I ran a few online scans: Mcafee security scan - Bitfinder online scan - and Trend Micro House calls All scans came back NO INFECTIONS

I then knew it was time to do the malware removal scans and have my logs checked. That's were I'm at now..

I ran malwarebytes found 1 trojan (see log)

I ran superantispyware Found some threats (see log)

I ran Hit Man Pro It found some NASTY virus items including a redirect virus for Microsoft Security Essentials (my trial is over for this program so I COULD NOT FIX any of the findings on this scan) (see log) :cry

I ran TdssKiller No threats found (see log)

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

I had a Windows Update occur last night, which was just a normal thing. Right after the update, MSE started getting the error code 0x80070002 whenever I tried to start the program, or when I would boot up the machine. I Googled answers for this and the best thing I could do was uninstall MSE.

I'm trying to reinstall MSE because I like how lightweight it is and because Windows keeps bugging me about it. I am aware that I can disable the notifications, but knowing that I don't have any protection is just something I don't want to be aware of.

Anyway, when I tried reinstalling it, I ran into the error code 0x80070643. Googling again led me to see that this is just some sort of installation error.

I don't have any other antivirus programs installed aside from Windows Defender. I've tried running several Microsoft Fix Its, and a bunch of command prompt steps, but it's still to no avail.

I am having some trouble with my Microsoft Security Essentials on my Laptop.  On startup and ring to intilise the program the laptop displays the same error 0x80073b01.

I am running the Windows 7 Home Premium (64bit) Operating System and the Laptop is a DELL Inspiron.

I am pretty competent on a PC but this issue is probably well out of my comfort zone.

Could somebody please help?

Hymy name is Daniel and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding. I am currently visiting an evening school and working nightshift only which might be evening for you. In this time I am mostly online with my mobile devices and won't be able to reply.   Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.Note: You need to ru... Read more

I'd start here with the suggested troubleshooting steps.

Installation Error 0x80070643 - Microsoft Community

One of the more common reasons for a failed MSE install is having had some other security software on the computer. Each security vendor usually provides their own official uninstall tool. Failure to use the tool can result in bits and pieces (remnants) being left behind which can interfere with a clean install of a new product. Singular Labs has compiled a list of official uninstallers. If you had a security product installed before MSE I'd run the appropriate uninstaller(s) after reading the info file(s).

The ZEROACCESS rootkit is serious malware infection. Complete disinfection will probably require the use of more powerful tools than we recommend in this forum. Before that can be done you will need to create and post a DDS log for further investigation. Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.
If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running DDS which will create two logs.
When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs, then still start the new topic and explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can closed this one.

Hello! This error appears everytime i try to install MSE.I've tried everything i read in some other sites but nothing fixed it.Anyone had the same problem?

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials install error 0x80070648

Hello and welcome Zincix mate if that isn't installing and personally I don't like that program have a look at some of these and try another they are all free and I would look at Bitdefender, Avast, and Avira at least but there are plenty.

Probably the Best Free Security List in the World > section 2 has the real time stuff.

In addition if you haven't got them already you would do worse than keep these as permanent add ons to the security you pick.

Every other time I turn on my computer--and, likewise, every single time I turn on Microsoft Security Essentials--I get this error message. I can't find any way to uninstall the program.

I have Avast for the realtime protection but, as far as I know, I had that turned off with MSE, using it only for occasional security scans.

This has been going on for about a week. Any ideas as to what's wrong?

Hello and thanks for the support.

Last night while playing an online game called Cockatice with a buddy of mine, a random song began playing. I thought it was from a website that was open, so I closed the web browser but it still played. I also closed Media player and it kept on. I looked at volume button in the lower right hand of the screen and noticed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) was red. I tried to start it and it gave me the message in the details: Error Code: 0x80070424.

I went to mute the sound as the song was still playing. I have Windows 7 so the output sounds are all separated and can be individually muted. I assumed the song would be coming from the main playback device, but it had it's own separate channel labeled all by itself (which made it easy to mute). I unfortunately do not remember the name, but it was something like "Nothing is here" or "Nothing special".

This creeped me out so I started running SuperAnti Spyware(SAS) and then followed up with Malwarebytes (MBAM). I got a bunch of cookies from SAS and a trojan from MBAM. I restarted my PC and MSE still wouldn't start. I restarted in safe mode and cleaned it all with both programs (SAS and MBAM) and restarting until nothing was found anymore, but when I restarted my PC, MSE was still in the red.

I did some searching online and found that I might be missing an update. I attempted to update but got an error every time. When the mist cleared it... Read more

Hi,

I recently purchased a lenovo laptop for home purpose around 1.5 months back. The laptop was having already microsoft security essentials (MSE) and mcafee antivirus plus software. Unfortunately, yesterday i was facing blue screen on death type of error (BSOD) error. On one forum, I found that it may be due to the mcafee antivirus software. So, I uninstalled the software as per suggestion.
My questions is :
Why MSE was not able to detect this bsod error ?
Moreover, why mcafee, which itself is a anti-virus software, was causing this issue?
Please help to know the exact issues in detail.

Morever, I want to install good free antivirus software. I am totally confused whether should I install the antivirus software or, the internet security software. Please throw more light on good free internet security software from longer perspective. (I just found that almost all free trials are only for 1 month only)? Moreover, why built-in windows firewall and microsoft security essentials (MSE) are not enough for detecting malacious software. Why extra internet security software or antivirus software is required ?

Thanks,
Ashish

Hi all,
MSE states that it's at risk whenever I log on to my computer.
I've recently dealt with a virus problem that kaspersky apparently took care of a few days ago.
But today I came across redirecting ads on firefox, despite having ad block plus.
Even while on safe mode with networking I had to deal with this.
Whenever I try to use malwarebytes without networking, it says its missing/corrupt.
On top of that, mse fails to work. Now I'm on my phone typing this out.
I took the liberty of attaching a farbar recovery scan tool result that I just got from following a similar thread on the MSE problem.
Help on eliminating this zero access infection would be appreciated.

I was downloading a file and Microsoft Security Essentials popped up with an alert about a potential threat. When I opened the pop-up, I was told there was a Severe threat Trojan and it was recommended to clean the computer to remove the Trojan. I allowed the program to remove the file. Shortly after I noticed while websurfing I kept being redirected to strange search sites and product sites. This only occurs when I am following a link resulting from a search engine query. There is no redirect when I copy the address directly into my browser. I thought maybe there was another virus so I ran Malwarebytes and after a full system scan there were no reported threats. I decided to update Microsoft Security Essentials because it originally detected this virus. Maybe the Virus Definitions were out of date... Anyway, I am unable to get the updates because the program keeps giving me an error message that I should check my internet connections and try again. I also keep getting Internet Explorer connection issues while web sites are trying to load. Some sites are taking forever to load and then fail. When I diagnose connection issues, the only helpful advise I get is to consult my owners manual...In the meanwhile I am able to use numerous other programs that require internet connections and aren't having any problem with them. I use a broadband connection and have full signal right now. I'm not sure if the Redirect problem and the connection/updates problem are connected, but ... Read more

Some false internet security program started up.  My spouse didn't close it properly or something, because then MSE stopped working.  I did a restore point first.  The restore succeeded but MSE still didn't work.  I tried to uninstall and reinstall MSE.  Couldn't do it in the typical manner (programs > uninstall).  Error code was 0x80073b01.  So I downloaded Malwarebytes and did the quick scan. It found and removed some trojan.  Still couldn’t uninstalI MSE.  I was finally able to remove Microsoft Security Essentials using Microsoft article at support.microsoft.com/kb/2483120.  But I have not been able to reinstall MSE.  I even removed Malwarebytes in case it was the problem - conflicting AV software - even though I run both on my other computer.  Then I went through all the steps in windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/i-cant-install-microsoft-security-essentials.  Still can't install MSE.  Error code is 0x80070643.  One Microsoft Support answer I read told me that maybe I needed to run updates in windows.  Tried this and found I can't run updates either. Error code 0x80096001.  Two critical updates need downloaded but can't be.  Even the windows update troubleshooter couldn't fix it.    I've now reinstalled Malwarebytes and am running the full scan, but I don't have much hope.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.      U... I'm getting the 0x80073b01 Error Code when I install Security Essentials after it completes the installation but before it starts the program for the first time.  If I click on it from the start menu, it gives the same error as I try to start it.  I believe the same problem is preventing the Microsoft updates from happening as well....they show two new critical updates needed, but it is never able to install them.

Found the program titled "PC Speed Fix" installed on her computer.  I uninstalled it, and after reboot it shows up again (now it is not showing up in her installed programs list).

I have ran updated versions of Malwarebytes and SpyBot...both removed some items, but still unable to start/run Security Essentials.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  Thanks!!

I've been trying to update Security Essentials now for a couple weeks and I keep getting the following error message:

I am running Win7 64. What is causing this error and how do I fix it?

I haven't updated Win7 in quite some time, perhaps that's it?

I didn't want to do all of the updates to keep getting notifications/pushes to upgrade to Win10 - I don't want it and want to stay on Win7.

Thanks.

Answer:Security Essentials is giving error when trying to update

Hi:

Yes, the fact that you have not updated Windows with important security patches for "quite some time" may be contributing to your problem.

The free upgrade offer from Win7 to Win10 ended months ago.
There are no more "GWX" reminders.
So there is currently no solid reason to refuse important security patches for Windows and your other MS software (e.g. MS Office).
If you are missing one or more months worth of security updates, your system is vulnerable.

As a general principle (with rare exceptions), one should install at least ALL "critical" and "important" SECURITY updates.
The decision to install "Recommended" and "Optional" patches, especially those that are not security-related, is up to the user. You'll need to read the descriptions of each available patch to determine if it applies to or might be needed for your system.

I do not use MSE.
So I cannot help specifically with the error message you report.
But, for starters, I would suggest running Windows Update manual checks and installing ALL available "Critical" and "Important" SECURITY updates.
It may have to be done in batches, depending on how many of them you are missing.
In other words, do not try to install 20 or 30 security patches all at once.
I suggest leaving ".NET framework" patches for last.

And you will need to reboot several times during the process, when prompted.
It's a good idea NOT to use the computer for... Read more

Hello,

Thought I would, finally, download the virus protection that it seems everyone likes in Windows Essentials.
Running W7, the 64 bit vers.

But, I guess the latest "gimmick" is that all the download sites, that I thought, and imply, are MS sites are some other third party sites that also automatically change your Browser to Chrome, and install AVG !

Can anyone point me to the official MS site please, and what I should select to just have the anti-virus
component installed ?

BTW: how does it compare to AVAST free ? Differences ?

Thanks,
Bob

Anybody running Microsoft's Security Essentials on Windows 7 x64?

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (retail upgrade) and after doing all my installs I installed Microsoft's Security Essentials. At first I did a "quick scan and it took like 10 minutes, however doing a full scan took at least 8.5 hours! This is going through 10 partitions on 3 hard drives.

By contrast Kaspersky takes about 60 minutes or less to do a full system scan the same system.

Is there a problem with MSE doing full scans and has anyone else noticed this.

On the positive side I visited a website posted by a forum member on one of the game forums I visit and MSE flag a file trying to install itself on my computer. Good job.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows 7

10 partitions and 3 drives. Thats whats taking so long. You might try adding some exclusions. MSSE>Settings>Exclude File Types.

I added quite a few exclusions since there arent any be default. Every other virus scanner has a default set. So you will need to add some to MSSE. Thsi will speed up scanning... Here are some to get you started..

AVI, BMP, CHM, INI, ICO, JPG, HXW, MPG, MP3, PNG, TXT, WMV, XML

You can also exclude know safe folders under the Excluded Files & Locations.

I am running microsoft security essentials (with realtime protection) on windows 7, however when I generate a system health report it indicates the following error message:- The Security Center has not recorded an anti-virus product. The Security Center is unable to identify an active anti-virus application. Either there is no anti-virus product installed or it is not recognized. What could be causing it to ignore the security provided by Microsoft Security Essentials. Because The virus guard is visible on the taskbar and running as well as it is fully updated and shows on the taskbar with the GREEN icon - i.e. system is protected.

The red Windows Security shield icon keeps telling me my antivirus isn't turned on or it's out of date.  My green Microsoft Security Essentials castle icon tells me it is working and is up-to-date.  Am I supposed to have Windows antivirus turned off because I have MS Sec. Ess.?  If they're both turned on aren't they competing with each other and overtaxing my CPU?  If I have the Windows Security do I not need the MS Security Essentials?  Are they doing different things?  The Windows product mentions a Firewall but the Security Essentials doesn't.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials AND Windows Security?

you should only have one av in your pc as they might be in conflict or cause problems , i would keep MSE disable the windows one , but i would delete it altogetheryou will still have the firewall working

Answer:Security Center service for Windows 7 cannot start & Security Essentials not working

Hi,

The Security Center service cannot be started due to virus destruction.

Have you tried the repair for Windows? If not, you can go to following SkyDrive to load the registry and import it to check the result.

http://cid-9fb18a384ebfc662.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Documents/wscsvc%5E564%5E6.zip

Before importing it, please back up the following registry key first. Just find the key and right click it, choose export and save to desktop.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc]

After importing the correct registry, please go to services Windows to check if Security Center starts properly.

I've been onto all kinds of sites, reading about people who cannot start windows defender, and cannot start it manually. Relax!

First Windows defender is only back up antivirus software graciously adapted into Vista, really its only for those who are not running any antivirus software at all. Sooo, if your running any other antivirus software you should disable defender anyway. Multiple antivirus packages running together is not a good thing. They litterally fight against each other, so only use one.

Secondly, defender will not run, and you cannot start it manually if you are running microsoft security essentials. Essentials will automatically turn off defender. Don't freak out, this is supposed to happen. If you really want defender to run, you must uninstall essentials. Although, I highly recommend essentials, Norton 360 is also great.

Found this article and wonder what you folks think. This is listed in your, "Top Freeware Picks". Is this a bogus report or something to take seriously? I have Windows 7 Ultimate but my children have Windows 8. I have told them that their protection was okay as Majorgeeks rated it very highly. What is the real story here? My kids and I are not super geeks. I think we all surf the web safely. Don't know about the grandkids clicking on stuff though. Your opinions and expertise will be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I think the opposite of the poor article and http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

MSE is a good free app that will update perfectly and will protect a PC as much as many other antivirus/malware applications/

Personally I use it and have no issues with malware at all, and as a backup I run Malwarebytes scanner,

Hi,

I would love for someone to help with an issue I have been having with MS essentials, upon booting up of my laptop I get an error message from MS essentials ( 0x80073b01)

I've had a look around and downloaded various different things to help, hitman pro managed to find three things that I know should not be there but it cant repair it.
these are the notes that hitman pro found:

   Redirection: Backup -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: Drivers -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

   Redirection: en-us -> c:\windows\system32\config
Disables Microsoft Security Essentials (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client)

I have no idea how to fix this, I currently cannot search for new updates due to this problem, and it deactivated my firewall also but I have thankfully managed to get that running again ( I think ).

I found a link that is alot like the problem I seem to be having, If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it:

Answer:Windows defender and Microsoft security essentials

Hi,

Please download Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) to your desktop.
There are 2 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
 rKill.exe: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/10/iExplore.exe (renamed rKill.exe): http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/dl/11/
Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
Do not reboot until instructed.
If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once the scan has finished running, a file named Rkill.txt should be located on the desktop. Please copy and copy the contents into your next reply.

If you're still using Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows XP, you will no longer be getting definition updates for it.

Today is "Patch Tuesday" for July 2015, so all support for it has now expired.

Hi

Can anyone help me with this. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my Windows 7 PC. Until recently this has completed a full scan without any problems. Now it has begun stalling after roughly 45 minutes. I ran a full scan over the past two nights but with the same results. I can do a Quick Scan OK and I can do a Full Scan in Safe Mode, but not in Normal Mode. I have had Malwarebytes Premium installed for ages and it hasn't caused any conflict with MSE. However, recently I installed Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware (both free copies). I uninstalled Ad-Aware and that is when the problem started.

I have unistalled (with great difficulty) MSE and reinstalled it but to no avail. I would welcome any help and suggestions.

Many thanks

George

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials Windows 7 stalls

If it was after you uninstalled Ad-Aware that the problem started, have you tried re-installing it? Set both Ad-Aware and Spybot only to run on demand, don't have them running in the background in conflict with MSE. Have you tried uninstalling Spybot?

Have you tried a System Restore position from before the problem started?

Hi - I have just installed MSE on an old laptop which already has Windows Defender. Should I uninstall Windows Defender? Thanks.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Defender

The 'old' Defender is anti malware only, so can run alongside MSE. On Windows 8, Defender is itself a combination of the two (ie, there is no downloadable MSE for W8).

Hello
I have Microsoft Security Essentials on My Windows 7 computers
Do I need Windows Defender as well ?
Thank you
Gel

Answer:Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials

MSE is anti virus, Defender is anti malware. Rather than Defender, I personally would go for the free Superantispyware, but there are lots of other free ones.
I used to use MSE for antivirus, but have now switched to the free version of AVG.
