Issue with Bitlocker encrypted fixed drive (non OS ) .

Question: Issue with Bitlocker encrypted fixed drive (non OS ) .

Need help with Bitlocker encrypted fixed drive (non OS ) on primary partition Windows 7 64bit Ultimate.

Drive D is encrypted however from last few days the lock icon displayed on the drive is missing and it is being displayed as unknown file system (Bitlocker Encrypted) in diskmgmt.

While try to open the drive getting error location is not available & access denied , no option to unlock it through right click . Only I can unlock it via opening bitlocker from control panel or through elevated cmd manage-bde -unlock D:
Tried All scenarios.
1. Unlock and then lock it again(reboot + shutdown).
2. Restarted the bitlocker service.
3. tried changing the drive letter .
4. Unlock + disk defrag .
5. no suspend or resume option available for drive in bitlocker settings.
6. Run chkdsk /f /r also, no issues reported.
Issue remains same no icons display for unlock or lock drive , no right lick option to unlock & getting same above error while double click on a drive . However I have checked it still shows drive as encrypted so it's mean encryption is sill running fine.

Preferred Solution: Issue with Bitlocker encrypted fixed drive (non OS ) .

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

BitLocker was turned on on my previous Windows 7. It was working properly until I had to change my Windows 7 and reinstall it on another drive, this time SSD instead of HDD. After installing Windows 7, I got "Access Denied" error message when i went
to unlock the drive. The password was correct and the drive could unlock, but access was denied. I tried the built-in Administrator account and found that it had not this problem. It could access the contents of the drive and unlock. This was while my account
was also an administrator of the new Windows. So, I decided to rename login name of the built-in Administrator account to my own and use it instead of my own account. This seemed that resolved the problem. Then, I decided to upgrade this Windows to 10. Now,
after upgrading, I can't access the drive with the built-in Administrator account too!

Notes:

In my previous Windows which I could see the contents of the drive, I was seeing a tiny lock icon on the root folders (the folders which were located on the root of the drive), while this didn't appear on their sub-folders. What is that?
Now and before upgrading, I might and may access the contents of the drive by using Total Commander. This seems the only way. It can't access and then brings up a dialog and asks for using administrative rights. If I click the button, it may show the contents!
why? I'm the administrator already!
Issues like permissions in security or ownership seem not to be applicable,... Read more

Let suppose I have encrypted a USB pen drive by Bitlocker, Most of the Windows versions have Bitlocker installed and the system prompt for the password, and decrypt the USB drive.
There are certain versions of Windows 7,8,10 like Home Single edition in which Bitlocker is not installed. Now what will happen if I plugged it in a such system, whether it will prompt for the password and decrypt the USB drive or not?

I have 1 partition encrypted drive from windows 7 ultimate, now if i want to change to home premium which do not have bitlocker feature, will i still be able to access the bitlocker encrypted drive?

Answer:bitlocker encrypted drive

My initial answer is no.. Because Bitlocker is not a part of the lower end flavors of 7 and must be poresent. You should decrypt the data first before downgrading the OS

However, with that said,,, there is the policy you can set within Group Policy for USB flash drives to "Allow Access To Bitlocker-Protected Removable Data Drives From Earlier Versions Of Windows" that can assure that you have access to the USB Flash Drive on other operating systems and computers.

I do not know if this will work on External USB HDD's. I have not played around with bitlocker a whole lot,, need to set some time aside for testing it out.

The Group Policy for this is as follows

In the start search type Group an then click on Edit Group Policy

Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Bitlocker Drive Encryption / Removable Data Drives

This policy also shows under Fixed Data Drives. But only mentions FAT file system, if you formatted it as NTFS, I am not sure it will work.

and there you will find the policy.

This policy settings configures whether or not removable data drives formated with the FAT file system can be unlocked and viewed on computer running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP with SP3, or Windows XP with SP2 operating systems.

But I doubt the data will be recoverable if you downgrade to Home Premium prior to unencrypting it.

I don't know when it started happening, but my drive stopped asking for a password and started asking for a recovery key. I lost my recovery file in a format, I only know my password. Is there any way to just enter the password, not the recovery key? I have very important files on my drive I have no access to.

I have 2TB hard drive with partitions, one have windows installed on and the other is BitLocker encrypted for data storage. I dont know what happend to my pc while I was at work but my pc was restarted when I got home and now my computer only shows one diskdrive (C, where windows is installed). BitLocked encrypted drive D does not show. It does show when I open disk management but it has no drive letter. See screenshot. What are my options? Please dont tell me that my 1765GB of encrypted data is lost :S

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted drive not showing anymore

My first bet would be to make a Ubuntu Live cd (Or even better a forensics Helix boot cd but thats probably over the top!), boot into that and see if you are able to mount the partition.. If you can then I would backup the data somewhere if possible... I think im right in saying that you can still decrypt the encrypted data if you copy it elsewhere but I haven't had much experience of bitlocker, only truecrypt.

My personal opinion is not to do anything within Windows as if it doesn't see the data or partition it may start harming your data.... Good to know my 4 years of Forensic Computing isnt going to waste... I think the above is a good start.

Hopefully others out there will have some more / easier suggestions

Hi All,

I have been looking on the internet but can't find anything useful.

I protected data on my USB flash drive using Bitlocker in Windows. But of course I can't access it inside Apple OS X operating system. Yes I have a Windows VM running inside my MacBook and can access bitlocked flash drive this way, but this requires booting
up Window VM and becomes frustrating most of the time.

Does anyone know any possible way to access bitlocked flash drive directly inside OS X?
If the answer is "No", then my request to Microsoft is to please make a Bitlocker Reader/Access tool for Mac OS X and make everyone's life easy. This will definitely increase number of Bitlocker users; a win-win situation!

Thanks

Hi,

I have 2 drives on my PC. One SSD where Windows 8.1 is installed and a secondary HDD for movies and stuff.
The SSD is Microsoft edrive compliant so I just enabled BitLocker encryption and set a password, i.e. Pass1.

Later I also encrypted the secondary HDD and DID NOT save the recovery keys when doing that. I clicked smth like Automatically unlock or smth when doing that as the secondary drive was always available when logging in to Windows later. No need to enter a separate password.

Now, I formatted the primary SSD and re installed Windows 8.1 but now I don't have the recovery key for the secondary drive. Is all the data lost or I can somehow use the password to unlock it?

Thank You

Answer:Unlock secondary BitLocker encrypted drive

Sorry cannot help you with that.

Hello, I have a drive that I'm trying to retrieve data from and I have the recovery key. It's hooked up to another Win7 64 bit OS and while Windows sees the drive, Bitlocker CP doesn't and therefore is not asking for the recovery key to unlock it.

When I double click it in explorer it just tells me it needs to be formatted.

When the drive was in its own computer, it was stuck in startup repair. Diags returned a HDD error code but I was still able to unlock in natively to run the startup repair.

Any tips or workarounds here or is the hardware damage preventing me from unlocking it on another computer? The only reason I haven't tossed it is because I am able to unlock it when booting from it using the recovery key. So why won't it let me when it's hooked up to another machine with Bitlocker?

Hello Uebersoldat, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if you may be able to recover the contents of the drive using the method below with another hard drive of equal size or larger to copy to.

Step 1: reinstall the OS drive without formatting the D data drive which is bitlocker encrypted.

Step 2: After encypted OS drive again, the D data drive can be automatically unlocked by reset the password.

Hello,
I accidently formatted one of my drives which was previously encrypted.
I tried some third party software as "recover my file" but it didn't work.
Later then, I experimented on a formatted (not encrypted before) usb drive to recover files by same software and it did work.
After that, I encrypted the usb drive and then formatted it. Then I tried to recover by same software, but it didn't work. So, it's apparent that it is not possible to recover from a encrypted and formatted drive by a usual recovery software. Is there any
other method that can help me.
Please inform, I'm in a dire need.
Thanks.

how can i recover my data ??? i need my data
i tried drive recovering tools (advanced EFS data recovery, easeus . . ,) . but . . . it's encrypted and formatted drive.
can i undo quick format and decrypt ???
sorry my english is not good.
someone help me please.

Answer:Can i recover lost data from encrypted drive by Bitlocker

BitLocker is not the cause of failed to recover files. Format a drive will clear all data saved on the hard disk. Thus recovery formatted data will be a hard disk based technology but not related to operation system. There is no build-in data recovery feature in Windows operations. So we will needto use third party recovery tool or contact third party data recovery company for current issue.

As recovery missing data service will be expensive, we can also check emails and contact friends to see if that can help get a part of files back especially for photos, documents etc.

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

Hey
My company is updating our windows, servers, desktops nearly every thing. we were asked to back up all our data on external drives, but we were forced to encrypt the drives with Bit locker, after the immigration to the new hardware and windows 10, I opened
my external HDD and USB Drive using the passwords I set earlier, and as I don't need the drives to be encrypted anymore, I right clicked the drives then choose "Remove password" which I thought it will decrypt the drives and no passwords will be
required anymore. I was surprised to find that my drives are still encrypted, and all what happened is that the password unlock option for my Bit locker encrypted drives was removed. it now only displays to option to unlock (another USB drive or recovery key)
and I don't have both. all what i have is the passwords that I set to the drivers, but the unlock with password option vanished.
can i return that option back so i can unlock both my drives using password? can you please advice?
thanks in advance.

Team - Trouble here!! Have ~730 GB of data on my 1TB iOmega HDD. Turned on BitLocker on my Windows 7
system, set password, created and saved recovery key file, and i saw it started encrypting (very slowly, which i think is normal). Left it there for hours and when i came back I saw it is asking me for my password for my unlocking... which i entered and it
just wont open. Goes "NOT RESPONDING". I did not lose power during the initial encryption and neither did i pull out the HDD (to my knowledge) even though I read in the MS content that encryption should resume the next time a drive is plugged in,
it it got interrupted the first time or whatsoever.

However, started my research and was shocked to find several people have had similar problems. Also references that data must be backed up before encrypting (may
be common sense). Well, i have not done that, did not know that a simple of act of encrypting could be such a crime, especially when you are encrypting what you have just taken a backup off - before proceeding towards a formatting of my laptop.

Tried the manage-bde commands and the results are in a pic that i cannot attach. Interestingly, i find that the "manage-bde -status" command shows "conversion status" and "percentage of encryption" as unknown. Is this normal? I
do not really remember seeing any screen (when i came back after hours to check the status of the initial BitLock'ing) stating "hey i am done&quo... Read more

Hi folks, Need some help here.  I reformatted (complete reformat with no personal preferences saved) of Windows 10 because of several glitches that were annoying.  I was smart to backup all my documents to an external hard drive that was encrypted with BitLocker.  But once the reformat was complete, the drive is no longer detected.  I can see the drive in Disk Management but it won't pop up in explorer and BitLocker does not prompt me when I plug in.  Help!  My two drives have all my backups and backups of backups!!! I've tried to update all the software/firmware/drivers but to no avail. I'm still under warranty but this is a software issue only I'm certain of it.   Help!

Hi All,
I'm hoping that some of the gurus in this area can help me to resolve why my transfer rate to my external hard drive is so slow (ranges from 200 kbps to 15 kbps), but is almost always in the 15-20 kbps range vs. an advertised/expected transfer rate of

5 Gbps.  That's < 1% of expected transfer rate.  Any thoughts on possible root causes that I should investigate?

I want to upgrade to WIN 10. But my SP3 SSD is bitlocker encrypted.
Will upgrade work on my encrypted SSD?
Will my existing bitlocker password work as I log on?
Any hints to help me as I upgrade?
Thanks!

Answer:How can I upgrade a Bitlocker encrypted SSD to WIN 10?

Should work. When you update, it'll warn you that Bitlocker is being suspended, so remember to unsuspend it when you have W10 installed (through the Bitlocker settings in the control panel).
If you then want to do a clean install then software Bitlocker will be erased. Hardware encryption may remain though, so I suggest you disable it first in such circumstances. I also suggest you do a diskpart clean for a clean install if you use hardware encryption, as Bitlocker may fail to recognise the hardware encryption and try to software encrypt instead when you get W10 installed otherwise.
Have your TPM key handy if you clean install. You shouldn't need it, but never know.
Oh, and make a system image backup to an MBR drive (assuming your boot drive is UEFI and so GPT) before you do anything. Note that the need to use an MBR backup drive instead of GPT goes away with W10, but is needed for W7/8.

I have been using my laptop for a while, but no sensitive data stored on it yet and I just enabled Bitlocker with the Used Space option to save time. The files that were deleted are NOT sensitive.

A few questions here.

1. When I decide to reinstall Windows 10 again on the same laptop, and enable Bitlocker, do I need to encrypt the entire disk or leave as Used Space? The way I reinstall Windows, is to delete ALL partitions and only leave the Unallocated free space. That's all. I usually delete ALL partitions.

2. Assuming I did NOT have any sensitive data previously deleted that may be recoverable on the free space, will it be OK to select Used Space only when I reinstall Windows the next time? It is really time consuming - takes about 9 hours to encrypt a 300GB drive...

3. If the Used Space is encrypted, and I decide to store data on there, will the files be automatically encrypted when added to that Used Space?

4. If I delete a sensitive file or document from that encrypted Used Space area, will those documents be moved to the free space area were they can be recovered?

Thanks!

Bitlocker encrypted drive was 100G and another drive 244G. Drives I converted to a drive then format it to restore my data. All the information was not encrypted, was returned but encrypted data was not returned even one bit. I changed the size of D to 200 GB again and after a lot of searching I found the repair-bde command.

this was result.
is there any solution to back my data?
please help

Answer:Reading a BitLocker Encrypted USB in Windows 10 Home

There was a similar problem upgrading to 8 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2748266 It isn't really applicable but you could have a look.

I'm not sure but I think that you should be able to unlock an external drive on Windows 10 home - just not use bitlocker for the OS drive.

Try starting the Bitlocker Drive Encryption Service if you have it under services.msc

Sorry I can't help too much as I have Pro version...

Hello,

We would like to use Bitlocker to encrypt external devices. However, we do already have some external hard disks with built-in encryption. Is it possible to detect this, and not to re-encrypt those disks with Bitlocker ?

Thanks,

Hello,

I currently have Win 7 Beta as my main OS with a non-system partition encrypted with Bit-locker(without TPM). I downloaded a copy of Win 7 RC, but will the new OS recognize the bit-locker encrypted partitions? Do I need to decrypt this drive, re-install the OS and then encrypt this non-system partition again? (I don't have my boot partition encrypted)

Or will Win 7 RC natively recognize the bit-locker partition and I just have to provide the user key to mount the drive?

Thanks,
Icered

Answer:Migrating Win7Beta bitlocker encrypted data to Win 7 RC

Hello Icered, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would recommend to decrypt the drive first, install the new OS, then use bit-locker to encrypt it afterwards.

Hope this helps,

Throughout my computing life, I've learned that it's important to umount drives. It still can be seen when devices like a cellphone or a pendrive are attached to the computer the advice of clicking to "Safe remove" the drive before removing it physically.
Now I have Windows 7 Ultimate virtual hard disks in .vhd format and encrypted using bitlocker. I mount them everyday, and I shutdown the computer WITHOUT dettaching that encrypted virtual drive first.
Is this that a problem for security?
Is this a problem for my files?
I'm concerned about a data lose, maybe corrupted files in the drive for dettaching by shutting down the computer without umounting first.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I have a computer with 2 500 GB hard disks. One of the disks contain the installed/active programs and Windows 7 while the other one contains files (pics, vids, etc.) My computer crashed while my kids were using it. Did not know what actually happened I reformatted the computer. At the initial stages of the reformatting, I was still able to see the 2nd hard disk which contained my files which happened to be encrypted by bitlocker. I don't know exactly what went wrong but now, my computer doesn't detect that hard disk and even my cd ROM drive is not being detected anymore. Tried to see if the BIOS will detect it but it couldn't either. Any suggestions? Any help will be appreciated.

Hey All,

Recently my company provided me with a Windows 10 SOE image as part of a UAT. The image includes Symantec Endpoint Encryption which utilizes Bitlocker for encryption.

I went through all of the motions with the C:\ drive to be encrypted and even printed the recovery key. Well, at some point I plugged in a few My Passport USB drives and they became locked by Bitlocker To Go. Everytime I try to unlock or click on these drives it asks for the 48-bit key which I don't have because I never was prompted to encrypt/lock these drives.

IT says that there are no keys stored on the servers for these USB drives and suggested that this would be a "local" encryption. However, they also stated that they wouldn't be encrypted unless I was prompted about it. So, there's this mystery about how these USB drives came to be locked.
I've been doing some research and the closest I've come is getting some output about the protectors:

Hi there

assuming the drives aren't encrypted then a Linux Distro should rescue you here.

Boot up any Linux Live CD - Linux Mint is a good one. Plug your USB in - should be recognized as an NTFS / FAT32 drive. Use the built in file manager (If the KDE desktop then DOLPHIN is the file manager - works and looks fairly similar to Windows / File explorer). Copy what you need or delete other stuff you don't need.

I don't think there's Windows fixes for this.

To make a Linux bootable USB stick I recommend download this ISO (Linux mint Rosa 17.3 x-64 KDE)

Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" - KDE (64-bit) - Linux Mint

Then use (on windows) RUFUS to make bootable USB stick.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Boot the USB stick, plug your other stuff in and use DOLPHIN to get your data. Linux reads and writes Windows file formats.

Here's an example of DOLPHIN reading an HP 64GB USB stick that I couldn't access with windows -

We have a ThinkPad x230 with Bitlocker encrypted. Laptop is using TPMandPin is used. OS is Windows 8The issue now, we reach the tpm wrong pin threshold and last Sunday laptop got lock and we are able to only open it after the lockout state Monday afternoon. To be honest I'm not aware of this TPM behavior. So the user really want to show me what happen so we reproduce and intentionally put a wrong pin. Now, laptop is still not accessible until this time. The thing is, we cleared the tpm from bios. So even using the correct pin, it tells you that it's a wrong pin.Apparently, the recovery password was taken forgranted and we don't have a copy.I was hoping someone can provide more information on how to tacle this and ultimately be able to recover the laptop.

I am currently using the Windows 10 Enterprise Evaluation (90-day trial licence). I am trying out Windows 10 to evaluate the Bitlocker encryption and storage pool features. I am nearing the end of my trial period and will need to purchase a license to continue using Windows.

I understand that there is no way to continue to use my existing installation of Windows 10 Enterprise after the trial ends, and that I will need to wipe the OS and clean install (a regular non-enterprise version of) Windows.

I would like to purchase Windows 10 Pro and install that.

I currently have the OS on a SSD, and two (other) hard drives configured as a bitlocker encrypted storage pool for my data. What will happen to my existing bitlocker encrypted storage pool after I wipe the OS (SSD) and clean install Windows 10 Pro? Will the new install of Windows see my encrypted storage pool and allow me to use my password to unlock it?

If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to directly downgrade from Enterprise to Pro without losing anything or affecting your BitLocker encrypted storage pool.

To be extra safe, you should backup your BitLocker recovery key to another drive (ex: USB flash drive) than your Windows drive or storage pool.

Hi All,
I am experiencing a strange issue which I hope is something very simple.
I have an SCCM task sequence which builds a Windows 7 x64 workgroup based laptop that is destined to be used in a KIOSK like fashion, i.e. running one app. with a specific purpose. The Task Sequence Enables, Activates and Takes Ownership of the TPM. After
that Bitlocker is enabled on Drive C: and then Drive D:. A Recovery Password, the TPM and a PIN are added as Key protectors.
The partition scheme is:

Boot partition (100MB) - standardSystem Partition (60GB)Data Partition (Rest of drive)
The issue I have is that the Enable Bitlocker (C:\) step is failing. When I check the state of the TPM, it is indeed enabled, activated and ownership has been taken. The command that is run during the failing step is "manage-bde c: -on -rp [valid password
here]"
When I run this command the error is:
"ERROR: An error occurred (code: 0x8007001f)
A device attached to the system is not functioning"
If I execute the next task sequence step ... "manage-bde d: -on -rp [valid password here]." the command runs as expected and enables Bitlocker as expected. The D:\ drive fully encrypts and after a reboot locks (also as expected given the OS dive
is not protected). It is only the OS partition that I cannot encrypt. I get the same experience after a reboot, if I use the Bitlocker Control Panel applet, even if I clear and re-initialise the TPM.
I have been building these d... Read more

Answer:Bitlocker issue - Unable to encrypt the OS drive. All other drives are OK.

Hi All,
I have determined the differences in hotfixes between our previous base OS image and the current base OS image. Hotfix KB2799926 is the culprit. After removing this hotfix I can enable Bitlocker on the OS drive. If I disable bitlocker, put the hotfix back
on and reboot I get the same error as reported above. Interestingly enough KB2799926 relates to Bitlocker-to-go.
I am logging a call with premiere support and will hopefully post the results here.

Hi,
please help
how can I recover data from a damaged disk (not physically) of an external encrypted Bitlocer.
Description of the situation:

After connecting the drive - I can decipher it by typing the password - but when you try to open the contents of the report the message "format disk"
- the disk probably has some volume damaged - it has been disconnected from the computer (without being turned off)
What I have done so far:

Using the "Lazesoft" program - I managed to copy (of course after entering the password
on the damaged disk)
the content to another external disk (full - looking after size) but -
this data is encrypted (mainly ending with .ER)
I am asking for a hint:

whether the data that is on the new disk can somehow read (on this disk I can try) [or/and]how to create a damaged disk image to try on another disk [or/and]how to repair a damaged disk (as a last resort) - I am afraid of total data loss [or/and]what other program to use to copy data from a damaged disk
but decrypted
Thank you in advance for your help

I am posting here because I have seen the most relevant information about bitlocker.
I have no idea why but two different fixed SSD drives are being listed as to go under bitlocker. I have no idea why or what to do about it.

One is a Samsung 840 EVO, the other a Crucial Mx100. A third SSD, a Samsung 850 Pro which is the OS drive is working correctly under bitlocker.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas how to proceed? I am using Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2, and I know this is a WIndows 8 Forum, but I can't find relevant information anywhere, this seemed to be the most knowledgeable site, and I imagine the problem may be the same in each.

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match

Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?

I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.

If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?

Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I have been using a netgear pci card for a while now and I have had no problems at all. But this week, I encrypted the network, as I found out 3-5 unknown users where using our connection, so that had to stop. The router that we have is a Belkin 54G and the encryption type that I have used is WPA-PSK TKIP. I am the only one using a Netgear card, every one else in my home are using belkin adapters. I have to point out, that I am the only person in my home having connection loss issues. When the connection is lost, I stop receiving packets, but, the netgear wizard icon is still green and telling me that I have a connection to the router, which I would assume I would have. It is almost as if the encryption is blocking the internet from being received.Any help would be great; I've been trying to fix this for the past few days, with no luck.Thanks.

Answer:Encrypted network, connection loss issue

Try changing the Channel number in the router's wireless settings, which might help to avoid lost connections. The other adapters in the house should pick up the changed channel without a problem. If that doesn't work, try deleting the existing 'profile' in the adapter's software and go through the procedure to "Connect" again when a new profile will be created.I'm actually a great believer in using Windows' own "Wireless Zero Configuration" to manage wireless connections, rather than third-party software supplied with the adapter. It is much more straightforward and seems very reliable. If all else fails, another Belkin USB WiFi adapter might be the answer, installed with "drivers only" and using Windows' WZC

Hello,

since yesterday we have problems with computers where the offline files are enabled and the cache is encrypted.

Users cannot save files the message access is denied is coming up.

It's possible to create a file, which has then 0 bytes and when opening the file the same message is coming up.

If we do not encrypt the offline cache via GPO, everything runs normally again.

This setup worked now for several years without problems.
Any Patchday issue?

it's win 7 ent 32 bit.

i had bluescreen of death and now i'm unable to start windows anymore.

if i choose to start windows normally, it would just restart after the windows splash screen
if i choose safe mode or any other, it will ask for the bit locker key

the bitlocker txt file that contains the key doesn't have the same recovery id as what it's shown on the screen. So I'm pretty much stuffed here i think.
Can anyone advise me of the best way to recover my data?

If I have another hdd that i can new fresh win 7 with, then attach the first hdd that i'm trying to recover, if I re apply bitlocker then, will I be able to access my files then?

Question: Bitlocker issue

We were excited to see the latest firmware update: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=8741498&swItemId=vc_172965_1&swEnvOid=419... "-Removes bit locker prompt for recovery key during every boot." Out of 100 of these PC's that we had acquired to do a massive upgrade of older hardware, we encountered issues with random bitlocker recovery screens that are popping up on a good majority of them. We have tried replacing hard drives, re-imaging, clearing the TPM, and re-encrypting. Nothing seems to help. Windows updates are complete, and the firmware or other drivers seem up to date. The units tested have no usb peripherals, or other oddities. It is completely random. We chose to bitlocker the used space and as new, using newer encryption and older. It seems nothing is preventing the bitlocker recovery on boot to randomly appear. Usually what fixes it is a power off and on, and it goes away *sometimes*. No errors or any indicators otherwise. Its completely baffled us. All systems are HP 800 G2, new out of box, we firmware update to the lastest ver, install our corporate image Windows Enterprise 10, which is licensed through our international internal key server. This image, created through WDS and sysprep we thought may be the culprit, but no event issues, and it works fine on laptops (mind you), with the lastest windows drivers and updates, it is a rather bare image. The problem came yesterday: i powered on the laptop , put in my password, windows started to load but just befor it got to the desktop i got a bsod (for a fraction of a second) and a restart.  And now it does that everytime i power it on, so i tried
to get in it with safe mode but bitlocker asks for a recovery key that let's just say i don't have it anymore(it was on a usb stick that i used to install windows so the key got erased)
How the hell do i get my data back without the recovery key but i know the password set for bitlocker

Hello everyone,

Thank you for coming and looking at this issue. I recently did a sweep of my drivers, this ended with several BIOS and other driver system updates being done. Somewhere, I'm assuming the BIOS flash, caused the need for my need for my Bitlocker Recovery Key.

Honestly, I made a mistake on the executable thumb drive and took me the last 12 hours to find the Recovery Key. Now that I have the recovery key, suddenly my usb keyboard decides it will not work. I have tried every port combination I could think of and nothing will work. I attach it to the laptop I am using and it is working fine, so it has something to do with the computer.

I'm hoping someone here could help me with some idea on how to fix this? I have the correct key to unlock the drive and everything would work fine again, just the keyboard doesn't want to work for me now on the desktop.

Thanks in advance to any answers, I will be standing by for any advice or help.

Answer:Bitlocker Key issue

I'm thinking the only thing I can try would be to get a old serial connected keyboard and hope that works, but hoping something else could work because I do not know where to obtain a keyboard like that anymore.

Question: Bitlocker issue

Hi, I have a Win8 Pro laptop with a single SSD. I just encrypted the entire drive using Bitlocker. The process prompted me to save the recovery key, which I did to an external drive. The encryption was successful but nowhere during the process was I prompted to choose a password. So I have the drive encrypted but when I reboot it does so normally without asking me for a key or password to access the drive. Did I do something wrong? thanks

Answer:Bitlocker issue

Hello Antares,

Does your PC's motherboard have a TPM.
Did you do steps like in the tutorial below?
BitLocker - Turn On or Off for OS Drive in Windows 8
If so, then this would be normal if you have the USB flash drive connected while the PC boots. When the PC boots, it will automatically read the startup key from the connected USB flash drive, and allows Windows 8 to start.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Question: Bitlocker Issue!

Hey people, I'm kind of desperate here.
So, I was encrypting my external hard drive with BitLocker on Vista Ultimate, and I put on my password and such, and the power in the house went out when it was about 12% done. My internal hard drive somehow died, so I got a new one and installed Vista Ultimate. Now, however, when I try and access the external hard drive, I get an error message stating: "Error Recovering Disk E: There is no recovery password information on this volume. The Volume cannot be unlocked."
Any Ideas? And if you do have ideas, please tell me how to use them. How do you use the Bitlocker repair tool, for example? It's a windows update thing!
Please help, as this is VERY urgent. All of my programs, files, and work is on that hard drive!

Hi, I recently upgraded to Windows 10 Pro for my home desktop in order to take advantage of Bitlocker to encrypt the data on my hard drive.  I am still having issues bypassing the TPM requirement.  I have been through the "gpedit.msc" issues and enabled the "Require additional authentication at startup".  I tried it multiple times to no avail.  The last time I did it, I used the /force command hoping it would be solution, but was met with the following error: Bitlocker could not be enabled. The Bitlocker key cannot be obtained.  Verify that the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is enabled and ownership has been taken.  If this computer does not have a TPM, verify the USB drive is inserted and available. C: was not encrypted. I have tried both the password and USB options with no luck. Is anyone able to give me some guidance? Thanks-

I have Dell Latitude E5450 laptop with Windows 8.1. I have enabled Bitlocker on both OS Drive C: and Data drive D: using command "manage-bde -protectors -add c: -TPMAndPIN". Also I have configured GPEDIT policy "Required additional authentication
at startup". Require startup PIN with TPM. Everything was working fine and i used to enter the PIN at startup. After a BIOS update it asked to provide me the recovery Key and I did the same and worked fine. After sometime it gave an error "Your
PC needs to be repaired""The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors."
File:\Windows\system32\winload.efi
error code: 0x0000225
after turning off TPM Security in BIOS OS is booting now without error but i have to enter the Bitlocker recovery key everytime instead of PIN. if I turn on TPM Security OS boot fails with above mentioned errors.

Answer:T440s Bitlocker issue

I haven't seen this before.  I wonder if it's a GUI problem with "Manage BitLocker", or something actually wrong with BitLocker.  Can you try running cmd prompt as admin and "manage-bde.exe -status"?

Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had encountered Bitlocker and TPM issues recently (possibly after a recent update)?
Just a few days ago every time I wake up my XPS 9360 it would ask me to input my recovery keys.
As this is getting annoying, I disabled Bitlocker altogether but somehow I can no longer enable it, it's saying "This device cannot use a Trusted Platform Module".
I've also checked Device Manager, I can see the TPM under Security Devices with the following message: "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"
It appears the TPM feature just disappeared.

It's kind of similar to the discussion on the link below, but they're talking about 9550
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19985939

I've already tried flashing the BIOS with the same version 1.3.2 but still no TPM.
Dell Support is not very helpful either, still waiting for their reply.

Thanks,

I recently received a new ThinkPad P70 with the NVMe SSD drive. After a frusterating few days of working with the SCCM bundle of W7 drivers I discovered that the included iRST driver was of no use and that there was no NVMe driver included, nor any mention of the required Microsoft Hotfix to add the needed support for Windows 7. Anyways... got past that hurdle and got my machine loaded with W7 and love it. However, I quickly ran into the next issue, namely that every time I reboot the computer I am prompted to enter the Bitlocker Recovery Key. I can only assume that this is related to the fact that the boot drive is a NVMe SSD and not a standard SATA HDD. Has anyone else run into this issue and can anyone provide any insight into the problem or solution? Thanks!

Answer:P70 with NVMe Bitlocker Issue

Regarding the BitLocker issue, typically the situation you described is caused by changing BIOS settings or Boot Order, since the time that BitLocker was originally turned on.  This technet article lists several other possibilities for what might cause BitLocker to enter recovery mode:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn383583.aspx#BKMK_WhatIsRecovery

Just now, I quickly tested a P70 with NVMe SSD and Win7, and didn't have this issue after I turned on BitLocker.  I'm using BIOS 1.15 here.

Hey, good morning for everyone...
I'm having a problem with my notebook Dell Latitude E6330. If I enable the Microsoft Bitlocker, my notebook displays a weird screen when I turn it on.
Behind this screen the BitLocker is waiting for my password. If I type it, the O.S. loads normally and I can use my notebook.I've already tried to update BIOS version, VGA and Chipset drivers. Didn't work. When I disable the Bitlocker the problem disappears...Someone already had that problem? Any tips? Thanks a lot.

Greetings - I have a new W500 laptop.

Win7 64bit
8GB RAM
300GB Hard Drive
3.06 Ghz Dual Core Processor

When I restart or power down the laptop is seems to not shutdown correctly. It will not restart. The only way I can get it powered up again is to hold the power button down for 10 seconds and this completely powers it down in which I am able to power up again. I have tried taking the battery out and putting it back in but this does not seem to solve the problem. I'm not sure but this problem may have started after i enabled Bit Locker.

Please advise....

Thanks

Answer:W500 TPM or Bitlocker Issue

Update -
Unencrypted hard drive with Bitlocker.
cleared TPM
reset TPM with new owner and password

Computer know shuts down and restarts correctly. Enable Bitlocker again and encrypt drive....... BOOM - computer will not restart or shut down correctly again. Is this a hardware TPM issue where I need to return under warranty or a software Bitlocker issue?

Dear Team member,
First I have a windows 7 OS - 64 bit (not Pro nor Ultimate).
I have installed bitlocker on a Seagate Expansion portable drive on my old laptop with an XP or older OS (now scrap) and I have set a password.
I have the password but I want to remove completely.
I tried several Seagate softwares and searched for Bitlocker programs that could delete the password but without any result.
Would you kindly assist me in deleting the password that locks the access (not encryption) to my external HD.
Thank you,
nagbay
