Bitlocker - detect encrypted external disk ?

Question: Bitlocker - detect encrypted external disk ?

Hello,

We would like to use Bitlocker to encrypt external devices. However, we do already have some external hard disks with built-in encryption. Is it possible to detect this, and not to re-encrypt those disks with Bitlocker ?

Thanks,

Soitjes.

Preferred Solution: Bitlocker - detect encrypted external disk ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi experts
My external USB disk was encrypted by bitlocker. It worked well until today. Now every time I try to decrypt the disk with no matter the password or key file, the USB disk lost connection.
My local IT said the it can be due to that some track of the disk is broken.
So in the case, is there any way I can get my data back.
Thanks very much. It is urgent. I am looking forward for your reply.

Hi,
please help
how can I recover data from a damaged disk (not physically) of an external encrypted Bitlocer.
Description of the situation:

After connecting the drive - I can decipher it by typing the password - but when you try to open the contents of the report the message "format disk"
- the disk probably has some volume damaged - it has been disconnected from the computer (without being turned off)
What I have done so far:

Using the "Lazesoft" program - I managed to copy (of course after entering the password
on the damaged disk)
the content to another external disk (full - looking after size) but -
this data is encrypted (mainly ending with .ER)
I am asking for a hint:

whether the data that is on the new disk can somehow read (on this disk I can try) [or/and]how to create a damaged disk image to try on another disk [or/and]how to repair a damaged disk (as a last resort) - I am afraid of total data loss [or/and]what other program to use to copy data from a damaged disk
but decrypted
Thank you in advance for your help
Best Regards
S?awek

I have been using my laptop for a while, but no sensitive data stored on it yet and I just enabled Bitlocker with the Used Space option to save time. The files that were deleted are NOT sensitive.

A few questions here.

1. When I decide to reinstall Windows 10 again on the same laptop, and enable Bitlocker, do I need to encrypt the entire disk or leave as Used Space? The way I reinstall Windows, is to delete ALL partitions and only leave the Unallocated free space. That's all. I usually delete ALL partitions.

2. Assuming I did NOT have any sensitive data previously deleted that may be recoverable on the free space, will it be OK to select Used Space only when I reinstall Windows the next time? It is really time consuming - takes about 9 hours to encrypt a 300GB drive...

3. If the Used Space is encrypted, and I decide to store data on there, will the files be automatically encrypted when added to that Used Space?

4. If I delete a sensitive file or document from that encrypted Used Space area, will those documents be moved to the free space area were they can be recovered?

Thanks!

I have a computer with 2 500 GB hard disks. One of the disks contain the installed/active programs and Windows 7 while the other one contains files (pics, vids, etc.) My computer crashed while my kids were using it. Did not know what actually happened I reformatted the computer. At the initial stages of the reformatting, I was still able to see the 2nd hard disk which contained my files which happened to be encrypted by bitlocker. I don't know exactly what went wrong but now, my computer doesn't detect that hard disk and even my cd ROM drive is not being detected anymore. Tried to see if the BIOS will detect it but it couldn't either. Any suggestions? Any help will be appreciated.

Hi folks, Need some help here.  I reformatted (complete reformat with no personal preferences saved) of Windows 10 because of several glitches that were annoying.  I was smart to backup all my documents to an external hard drive that was encrypted with BitLocker.  But once the reformat was complete, the drive is no longer detected.  I can see the drive in Disk Management but it won't pop up in explorer and BitLocker does not prompt me when I plug in.  Help!  My two drives have all my backups and backups of backups!!! I've tried to update all the software/firmware/drivers but to no avail. I'm still under warranty but this is a software issue only I'm certain of it.   Help!

Hi All,
I'm hoping that some of the gurus in this area can help me to resolve why my transfer rate to my external hard drive is so slow (ranges from 200 kbps to 15 kbps), but is almost always in the 15-20 kbps range vs. an advertised/expected transfer rate of

5 Gbps.  That's < 1% of expected transfer rate.  Any thoughts on possible root causes that I should investigate?

I have an HP Probook 430 G1 laptop with a Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256 GB SCSI internal hard drive and 4 GB RAM running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. I also have a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1 TB external hard driveBoth the internal drive and the external drive are bitlocker encryptedI've connected the drives via USB 3.0 ports + cable. I've also connected the drives via USB 2.0 port on laptop and USB 3.0 cable.I've checked the My Passport for errors and found none.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

Earlier I had Windows 7 ultimate 32bit installed in my PC with external Hard disk . I encrypted one of the folder using windows inbuilt software. Today i re-installed my pc with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. I am unable to access that encrypted folder from my external drive. I tried to takeover the rights of folder. but still i am unable. I can only see that files ( which are in green color) are present in that encrypted folder but cant access, copy or move it to my fixed drive..Can anyone please help me out so as to how can i get my folder back. is deencrption a way for it.Thanks in advance.

Answer:No Access rights to encrypted folders on external hard disk.

Most data recovery programs will break down the encryption, and get the files/folder back.I use more professional stuff, but PC Inspector may do it.http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pcinsp...

I recently installed a program to allow my PC to read Mac formatted hard disks. However, it did not work and from then forward, my PC is unable to detect all other external hard disks, I've tried a few. The drives are not even showing on disk management. The lights on the hard disk do light up with I plug them in but nothing happens.

Is anyone able to solve this mystery for me. BTW this problem only occurred after I installed the above mentioned program.

Answer:Can't Detect External Hard Disk

Well, what's the program and have you tried removing it?
There are simple ways to format external HDDs so they can be used both on PC and Mac. It would be a good idea to format HDDs you know you'll use on both platforms this way. Instructions are usually included with the drive, at least both my LaCie and WD included them.
Hope this helps,
J

I have recently taken a new PC with win 8.1.

My old PC had win xp.

My old HDD had two partitions C: and D:.

Now when accessing the old HDD as an external disk, I can find the first partition C: but in place of partition D: , it does not show at all and size shown is 0. ( 0 used and 0 available)

the files and folders are obviously not seen too.

what can be wrong and how do i access this partition again.

request someone with specific advice to inform me how to resolve this.

thanks.

Answer:windows 8.1 - PC does not detect one partition in external disk

Start by running Seatools for Windows (free from here:  http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/ )
Run the long/extended test on the hard drive whose partitions/files you can't see.

What was on partition D:?
Have you tried recovery software?  If not, I'd suggest this program (it's free to see what you can recover - but costs if you want to recover):  http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm
There are free programs that do this, but they aren't as reliable or they're much more difficult to use.  If looking for a free program I'd suggest:  http://www.pcinspector.de/Default.htm?language=1

I want to upgrade to WIN 10. But my SP3 SSD is bitlocker encrypted.
Will upgrade work on my encrypted SSD?
Will my existing bitlocker password work as I log on?
Any hints to help me as I upgrade?
Thanks!

Answer:How can I upgrade a Bitlocker encrypted SSD to WIN 10?

Should work. When you update, it'll warn you that Bitlocker is being suspended, so remember to unsuspend it when you have W10 installed (through the Bitlocker settings in the control panel).
If you then want to do a clean install then software Bitlocker will be erased. Hardware encryption may remain though, so I suggest you disable it first in such circumstances. I also suggest you do a diskpart clean for a clean install if you use hardware encryption, as Bitlocker may fail to recognise the hardware encryption and try to software encrypt instead when you get W10 installed otherwise.
Have your TPM key handy if you clean install. You shouldn't need it, but never know.
Oh, and make a system image backup to an MBR drive (assuming your boot drive is UEFI and so GPT) before you do anything. Note that the need to use an MBR backup drive instead of GPT goes away with W10, but is needed for W7/8.

I have 1 partition encrypted drive from windows 7 ultimate, now if i want to change to home premium which do not have bitlocker feature, will i still be able to access the bitlocker encrypted drive?

Answer:bitlocker encrypted drive

My initial answer is no.. Because Bitlocker is not a part of the lower end flavors of 7 and must be poresent. You should decrypt the data first before downgrading the OS

However, with that said,,, there is the policy you can set within Group Policy for USB flash drives to "Allow Access To Bitlocker-Protected Removable Data Drives From Earlier Versions Of Windows" that can assure that you have access to the USB Flash Drive on other operating systems and computers.

I do not know if this will work on External USB HDD's. I have not played around with bitlocker a whole lot,, need to set some time aside for testing it out.

The Group Policy for this is as follows

In the start search type Group an then click on Edit Group Policy

Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Bitlocker Drive Encryption / Removable Data Drives

This policy also shows under Fixed Data Drives. But only mentions FAT file system, if you formatted it as NTFS, I am not sure it will work.

and there you will find the policy.

This policy settings configures whether or not removable data drives formated with the FAT file system can be unlocked and viewed on computer running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP with SP3, or Windows XP with SP2 operating systems.

But I doubt the data will be recoverable if you downgrade to Home Premium prior to unencrypting it.

Let suppose I have encrypted a USB pen drive by Bitlocker, Most of the Windows versions have Bitlocker installed and the system prompt for the password, and decrypt the USB drive.
There are certain versions of Windows 7,8,10 like Home Single edition in which Bitlocker is not installed. Now what will happen if I plugged it in a such system, whether it will prompt for the password and decrypt the USB drive or not?

Hi, im having a problem trying to create a system image and store it in my external hdd.
This isnt the first time i use the windows backup to create a system image, ive done it before using this external hdd with no problems at all.
But now, for some reason it wont detect this hard drive, it only gives me the option to store the image on a dvd, i dont know why?, i tested the hard drive on a different computer and IT WORKS, i tried to create an image and it does work.

Heres a picture so you guys can see the problem:

sorry the image is kinda big, but as you can see on the left, windows DOES detect the hard drive, BUT when i try to create the image, it simply doesnt, it only gives me the dvd option.
i hope you guys can help me here, thanks a lot

Answer:Create system image won't detect external hard disk

You have not stated the App you are using to create the sysrem image. Please tell us.

I have experienced the same thing once in a way with Acronis but the issue always gets resolved by restarting Acronis. You may try to restart your imaging App to see if the matter gets resolved. But I suspect that you may have already done that to no effect.

The next thing to do would be to change your image back-up App. This might succeed. Please try it out and let us have the results.

Need help with Bitlocker encrypted fixed drive (non OS ) on primary partition Windows 7 64bit Ultimate.

Drive D is encrypted however from last few days the lock icon displayed on the drive is missing and it is being displayed as unknown file system (Bitlocker Encrypted) in diskmgmt.

While try to open the drive getting error location is not available & access denied , no option to unlock it through right click . Only I can unlock it via opening bitlocker from control panel or through elevated cmd manage-bde -unlock D:
Tried All scenarios.
1. Unlock and then lock it again(reboot + shutdown).
2. Restarted the bitlocker service.
3. tried changing the drive letter .
4. Unlock + disk defrag .
5. no suspend or resume option available for drive in bitlocker settings.
6. Run chkdsk /f /r also, no issues reported.
Issue remains same no icons display for unlock or lock drive , no right lick option to unlock & getting same above error while double click on a drive . However I have checked it still shows drive as encrypted so it's mean encryption is sill running fine.

Hi,

I have 2 drives on my PC. One SSD where Windows 8.1 is installed and a secondary HDD for movies and stuff.
The SSD is Microsoft edrive compliant so I just enabled BitLocker encryption and set a password, i.e. Pass1.

Later I also encrypted the secondary HDD and DID NOT save the recovery keys when doing that. I clicked smth like Automatically unlock or smth when doing that as the secondary drive was always available when logging in to Windows later. No need to enter a separate password.

Now, I formatted the primary SSD and re installed Windows 8.1 but now I don't have the recovery key for the secondary drive. Is all the data lost or I can somehow use the password to unlock it?

Thank You

Hello, I have a drive that I'm trying to retrieve data from and I have the recovery key. It's hooked up to another Win7 64 bit OS and while Windows sees the drive, Bitlocker CP doesn't and therefore is not asking for the recovery key to unlock it.

When I double click it in explorer it just tells me it needs to be formatted.

When the drive was in its own computer, it was stuck in startup repair. Diags returned a HDD error code but I was still able to unlock in natively to run the startup repair.

Any tips or workarounds here or is the hardware damage preventing me from unlocking it on another computer? The only reason I haven't tossed it is because I am able to unlock it when booting from it using the recovery key. So why won't it let me when it's hooked up to another machine with Bitlocker?

There was a similar problem upgrading to 8 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2748266 It isn't really applicable but you could have a look.

I'm not sure but I think that you should be able to unlock an external drive on Windows 10 home - just not use bitlocker for the OS drive.

Try starting the Bitlocker Drive Encryption Service if you have it under services.msc

Hi All,

I have been looking on the internet but can't find anything useful.

I protected data on my USB flash drive using Bitlocker in Windows. But of course I can't access it inside Apple OS X operating system. Yes I have a Windows VM running inside my MacBook and can access bitlocked flash drive this way, but this requires booting

Does anyone know any possible way to access bitlocked flash drive directly inside OS X?
If the answer is "No", then my request to Microsoft is to please make a Bitlocker Reader/Access tool for Mac OS X and make everyone's life easy. This will definitely increase number of Bitlocker users; a win-win situation!

Hello,

I currently have Win 7 Beta as my main OS with a non-system partition encrypted with Bit-locker(without TPM). I downloaded a copy of Win 7 RC, but will the new OS recognize the bit-locker encrypted partitions? Do I need to decrypt this drive, re-install the OS and then encrypt this non-system partition again? (I don't have my boot partition encrypted)

Or will Win 7 RC natively recognize the bit-locker partition and I just have to provide the user key to mount the drive?

Thanks,
Icered

I would recommend to decrypt the drive first, install the new OS, then use bit-locker to encrypt it afterwards.

I have 2TB hard drive with partitions, one have windows installed on and the other is BitLocker encrypted for data storage. I dont know what happend to my pc while I was at work but my pc was restarted when I got home and now my computer only shows one diskdrive (C, where windows is installed). BitLocked encrypted drive D does not show. It does show when I open disk management but it has no drive letter. See screenshot. What are my options? Please dont tell me that my 1765GB of encrypted data is lost :S

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted drive not showing anymore

My first bet would be to make a Ubuntu Live cd (Or even better a forensics Helix boot cd but thats probably over the top!), boot into that and see if you are able to mount the partition.. If you can then I would backup the data somewhere if possible... I think im right in saying that you can still decrypt the encrypted data if you copy it elsewhere but I haven't had much experience of bitlocker, only truecrypt.

My personal opinion is not to do anything within Windows as if it doesn't see the data or partition it may start harming your data.... Good to know my 4 years of Forensic Computing isnt going to waste... I think the above is a good start.

Hopefully others out there will have some more / easier suggestions

Throughout my computing life, I've learned that it's important to umount drives. It still can be seen when devices like a cellphone or a pendrive are attached to the computer the advice of clicking to "Safe remove" the drive before removing it physically.
Now I have Windows 7 Ultimate virtual hard disks in .vhd format and encrypted using bitlocker. I mount them everyday, and I shutdown the computer WITHOUT dettaching that encrypted virtual drive first.
Is this that a problem for security?
Is this a problem for my files?
I'm concerned about a data lose, maybe corrupted files in the drive for dettaching by shutting down the computer without umounting first.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Shutting down PC when .vhd bitlocker encrypted file is mounted

That is fine. Nothing to worry about.

I need advices about how can I solve my issue:

I have an external drive. I started the encryption drive with bitlocker, during encryption process,
the drive has been disconnected so I wasn?t able to continue the encryption process.

Now, the drive is partially encrypted. When I want to access the drive, I got the error message
?Encryption Failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion?.

I would like a procedure to recover the remaining data: encrypted and non encrypted

I used M3 Bitlocker Recovery but the tool freezes, I am currently trying TestDisk 7.0. Analysis
is in progress.

You'll find attached screenshots and detailed description of the situation.

I have the passwords & recovery keys

Hello,
I accidently formatted one of my drives which was previously encrypted.
I tried some third party software as "recover my file" but it didn't work.
Later then, I experimented on a formatted (not encrypted before) usb drive to recover files by same software and it did work.
After that, I encrypted the usb drive and then formatted it. Then I tried to recover by same software, but it didn't work. So, it's apparent that it is not possible to recover from a encrypted and formatted drive by a usual recovery software. Is there any
other method that can help me.
Please inform, I'm in a dire need.
Thanks.

Hello Dears. I had encrypted my drive by Bitlocker in windows 7.
few days after my friend did quick format in my encrypted drive.
my 300 gb of data lost. and nothing saved
i remember unlock password.
how can i recover my data ??? i need my data
i tried drive recovering tools (advanced EFS data recovery, easeus . . ,) . but . . . it's encrypted and formatted drive.
can i undo quick format and decrypt ???
sorry my english is not good.
someone help me please.

Answer:Can i recover lost data from encrypted drive by Bitlocker

BitLocker is not the cause of failed to recover files. Format a drive will clear all data saved on the hard disk. Thus recovery formatted data will be a hard disk based technology but not related to operation system. There is no build-in data recovery feature in Windows operations. So we will needto use third party recovery tool or contact third party data recovery company for current issue.

As recovery missing data service will be expensive, we can also check emails and contact friends to see if that can help get a part of files back especially for photos, documents etc.

I am currently using the Windows 10 Enterprise Evaluation (90-day trial licence). I am trying out Windows 10 to evaluate the Bitlocker encryption and storage pool features. I am nearing the end of my trial period and will need to purchase a license to continue using Windows.

I understand that there is no way to continue to use my existing installation of Windows 10 Enterprise after the trial ends, and that I will need to wipe the OS and clean install (a regular non-enterprise version of) Windows.

I would like to purchase Windows 10 Pro and install that.

I currently have the OS on a SSD, and two (other) hard drives configured as a bitlocker encrypted storage pool for my data. What will happen to my existing bitlocker encrypted storage pool after I wipe the OS (SSD) and clean install Windows 10 Pro? Will the new install of Windows see my encrypted storage pool and allow me to use my password to unlock it?

Hello zeb1s, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to directly downgrade from Enterprise to Pro without losing anything or affecting your BitLocker encrypted storage pool.

To be extra safe, you should backup your BitLocker recovery key to another drive (ex: USB flash drive) than your Windows drive or storage pool.

Hey All,

Recently my company provided me with a Windows 10 SOE image as part of a UAT. The image includes Symantec Endpoint Encryption which utilizes Bitlocker for encryption.

I went through all of the motions with the C:\ drive to be encrypted and even printed the recovery key. Well, at some point I plugged in a few My Passport USB drives and they became locked by Bitlocker To Go. Everytime I try to unlock or click on these drives it asks for the 48-bit key which I don't have because I never was prompted to encrypt/lock these drives.

IT says that there are no keys stored on the servers for these USB drives and suggested that this would be a "local" encryption. However, they also stated that they wouldn't be encrypted unless I was prompted about it. So, there's this mystery about how these USB drives came to be locked.
I've been doing some research and the closest I've come is getting some output about the protectors:

Hi there

assuming the drives aren't encrypted then a Linux Distro should rescue you here.

Boot up any Linux Live CD - Linux Mint is a good one. Plug your USB in - should be recognized as an NTFS / FAT32 drive. Use the built in file manager (If the KDE desktop then DOLPHIN is the file manager - works and looks fairly similar to Windows / File explorer). Copy what you need or delete other stuff you don't need.

I don't think there's Windows fixes for this.

To make a Linux bootable USB stick I recommend download this ISO (Linux mint Rosa 17.3 x-64 KDE)

Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" - KDE (64-bit) - Linux Mint

Then use (on windows) RUFUS to make bootable USB stick.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Boot the USB stick, plug your other stuff in and use DOLPHIN to get your data. Linux reads and writes Windows file formats.

Here's an example of DOLPHIN reading an HP 64GB USB stick that I couldn't access with windows -

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

We have a ThinkPad x230 with Bitlocker encrypted. Laptop is using TPMandPin is used. OS is Windows 8The issue now, we reach the tpm wrong pin threshold and last Sunday laptop got lock and we are able to only open it after the lockout state Monday afternoon. To be honest I'm not aware of this TPM behavior. So the user really want to show me what happen so we reproduce and intentionally put a wrong pin. Now, laptop is still not accessible until this time. The thing is, we cleared the tpm from bios. So even using the correct pin, it tells you that it's a wrong pin.Apparently, the recovery password was taken forgranted and we don't have a copy.I was hoping someone can provide more information on how to tacle this and ultimately be able to recover the laptop.

Hey
My company is updating our windows, servers, desktops nearly every thing. we were asked to back up all our data on external drives, but we were forced to encrypt the drives with Bit locker, after the immigration to the new hardware and windows 10, I opened
my external HDD and USB Drive using the passwords I set earlier, and as I don't need the drives to be encrypted anymore, I right clicked the drives then choose "Remove password" which I thought it will decrypt the drives and no passwords will be
required anymore. I was surprised to find that my drives are still encrypted, and all what happened is that the password unlock option for my Bit locker encrypted drives was removed. it now only displays to option to unlock (another USB drive or recovery key)
and I don't have both. all what i have is the passwords that I set to the drivers, but the unlock with password option vanished.
can i return that option back so i can unlock both my drives using password? can you please advice?
thanks in advance.

Hi All

I formatted my PC to another installation of Windows 7 Ultimate(also the one I had before the format).

Now before I formatted windows on drive C:, I encrypted a folder with Bitlocker. Now this folder was on another harddrive D: on my PC. After the format on C: drive, I cannot access any files in the encrypted folder anymore. The folder is color green(so are all the files inside) and when clicking on any file inside, it tells me "you don't have access to open this file".

Any suggestions?

Team - Trouble here!! Have ~730 GB of data on my 1TB iOmega HDD. Turned on BitLocker on my Windows 7
system, set password, created and saved recovery key file, and i saw it started encrypting (very slowly, which i think is normal). Left it there for hours and when i came back I saw it is asking me for my password for my unlocking... which i entered and it
just wont open. Goes "NOT RESPONDING". I did not lose power during the initial encryption and neither did i pull out the HDD (to my knowledge) even though I read in the MS content that encryption should resume the next time a drive is plugged in,
it it got interrupted the first time or whatsoever.

However, started my research and was shocked to find several people have had similar problems. Also references that data must be backed up before encrypting (may
be common sense). Well, i have not done that, did not know that a simple of act of encrypting could be such a crime, especially when you are encrypting what you have just taken a backup off - before proceeding towards a formatting of my laptop.

Tried the manage-bde commands and the results are in a pic that i cannot attach. Interestingly, i find that the "manage-bde -status" command shows "conversion status" and "percentage of encryption" as unknown. Is this normal? I
do not really remember seeing any screen (when i came back after hours to check the status of the initial BitLock'ing) stating "hey i am done&quo... Read more

BitLocker was turned on on my previous Windows 7. It was working properly until I had to change my Windows 7 and reinstall it on another drive, this time SSD instead of HDD. After installing Windows 7, I got "Access Denied" error message when i went
to unlock the drive. The password was correct and the drive could unlock, but access was denied. I tried the built-in Administrator account and found that it had not this problem. It could access the contents of the drive and unlock. This was while my account
was also an administrator of the new Windows. So, I decided to rename login name of the built-in Administrator account to my own and use it instead of my own account. This seemed that resolved the problem. Then, I decided to upgrade this Windows to 10. Now,
after upgrading, I can't access the drive with the built-in Administrator account too!

Notes:

In my previous Windows which I could see the contents of the drive, I was seeing a tiny lock icon on the root folders (the folders which were located on the root of the drive), while this didn't appear on their sub-folders. What is that?
Now and before upgrading, I might and may access the contents of the drive by using Total Commander. This seems the only way. It can't access and then brings up a dialog and asks for using administrative rights. If I click the button, it may show the contents!
why? I'm the administrator already!
Issues like permissions in security or ownership seem not to be applicable,... Read more

Hello,

1 M.2 drive (OS) (encrypted)
2 1TB HDD's in RAID1 (encrypted)
1 750GB HDD (not encrypted)
1 external HDD (encrypted)

In the PE environment only my OS drive is visible. I cant even see the unencrypted 750GB HDD for some reason. If I run a command prompt and "manage-BDE" it shows only my OS drive, and some drive "E" which is apparently encrypted but does not have a listed size.

I normally store my system backup images on some of these drives which are inaccessible. Why are they not visible in the PE environment?

Hello,

First off, Bitlocker has never been used on this computer. All its drives have never been encrypted. The problem is that when I open Bitlocker Drive Encryption in the Control Panel there are absolutely no drives listed at all. The area under the heading "BitLocker Drive Encryption - Hard Disk Drives" is completely blank, as is the area under "BitLocker To Go". However, Windows Explorer detects all hard and removable drives just fine.

I have tried the following:

1. chkdsk /r (no problems found)
2. sfc /scannnow (no problems found)
3. rebuilding the MBR with Comodo Cleaning Essentials (which didn't quite like the one I had) after aswMBR found no problem
4. repairing/resetting file and registry ownership and permissions to defaults using SubInACL scripts for registry and Tweaking.com for files. (This did fix a few minor nagging problems I had, by the way)
5. a clean boot
6. anti-malware scans (including several offline rescue CD's like Kaspersky, Comodo, ESET and AVG)
7. creating a new user account with admin privileges and trying from there
8. trying to trace file and registry activity with Sysinternals Process Monitor (but I don't really understand what to look for, or what most the results in the listing mean, good or bad)

I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.

If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?

Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi,

I want to ship my HDD overseas to a friend. It has some sensitive data & I want to Protect that data using one of the 2 products called ?Disk Password Protection? OR ?Cryptic Disk? from Exlade.

http://www.exlade.com/home

With Disk Partition Protection, I am able to Protect it by using a Password for booting it & another password for opening each Partition.

My question is, would my friend be able to unlock that hard drive on an entirely different PC with different configuration ?

Wouldn?t it create a problem even to detect it because the bios is different ?

The other product Cryptic Disk protects the HDD by encrypting the data on each partition. If I used that software would my friend be able to Unlock it on a different PC ?

OR

Does anyone have a better idea & better software for what I want to do ?

Hello,

I have two computers, one with windows 7 Ultimate, and other with windows 8.1 Pro.
I have observed that if I want to copy files and folders from computer's internal HDD to other drive (like external HDD or second HDD) the operating system will promt me to backup the encryption key. The EFS encryption file system is running.

What I want is to permanently deactivate this feature/service so I can backup my folders (photos and documents) without the risk of being encrypted. Because, if I lose my key, I will lose my data too...

Is this possible.

Thank you in advance.

I believe the same procedure applies to both OSs (win 7 and 8)

Answer:Disable EFS and backup files to external hdd without being encrypted

Hello Kenobi,

Usually, you just wouldn't encrypt files and folders with EFS if you didn't want to use it since they are not automatically encrypted.

Before disabling EFS, be sure that you decrypt all files and folders encrypted by EFS first.

I regularly back up my files to a 2 TB external hard drive. Recently I've been backing up financial data to the drive and so decided to encrypt the drive.(its portable) Its not a big issue, it is just since I encrypted the drive I've had to rely on 3rd party automatic back up programs since windows stopped detecting the drive. Makes sense the drive is encrypted. Though even when the drive is mounted, everything else I use in windows can view and access the drive but windows 7's backup utility. Windows 7 backup utility can't find the drive when it "searches for drives" to backup to or create system images. Is there a way to make windows 7's backup utility able to access an encrypted drive? If not 3rd party programs I guess will be my new go to.

Answer:Backing up windows 7 to a encrypted external drive

Make sure that the external drive is unlocked.

My OEM version of XP Pro (SP 2) crashed last week, so I reinstalled Windows from the installation CD that came with my Dell laptop, and upgraded to SP 3.

For years, I've backed up my data to an external drive using simple drag-and-drop (no backup software). Prior to reinstalling Windows, I had no trouble accessing the backed up files.

After reinstalling Windows, I went to retrieve my data from the external drive, only to discover that two-thirds of the files on the drive were inaccessible. In addition to "Access Denied" messages, the filenames are green, as though they've been encrypted. I've NEVER encrypted my data. Honestly, I wouldn't know how!

The remaining one-third of the backed-up files weren't affected. To my untrained eye (for what that's worth) the pattern of encryption is random. Sometimes every file in a folder is encrypted. Sometimes only a few are. Sometimes none are. Every type of file was targeted: text....media....graphic....executable....the carnage is widespread.

When I phoned Maxtor Tech Support, the technician had me click and unclick "Properties" boxes for an hour, before concluding that the problem wasn't with the external drive, but with Windows. More than that, he couldn't, or wouldn't say.

I'd be so grateful for any help with this, and thanks.

I have a 4 terabyte Seagate external hard drive. I am on Windows 8. I had the hard drive encrypted with TrueCrypt and still have the correct password. A few weeks ago, the power supply on the enclosure went bad, so I had to get a new enclosure/power supply. When I reconnected the hard drive, TrueCrypt will no longer decrypt it.

In My Computer it says (as it always would), that the hard drive needs to be formatted. It did this before as well, as it does with all TrueCrypt encrypted hard drives. However, it appears that the partitions on the drive somehow got changed. In Disk Management it is showing only 465 MB as "Healthy (Primary Partition)" and then it shows 2 additional partitions as "Unallocated". One of the unallocated partitions is 1582 MB and the other is 1678 MB. Disk Management shows the Healthy partition on the far left, and then the other 2 unallocated partitions follow it on the right.

How can I "combine" these 3 partitions to get the original, single partition back? I don't want to lose or change any data, since I still want to be able to decrypt it once the sections are combined again. I know it is *not* a problem with the password. I would appreciate any help as I'm at a loss as to what to do!

hi,a little advice please,as you may or may not know,"internet explorer 9" will not open any "pdf" files, and i was told, thta the way to get it to work ,was to "untick" (do not save encrypted pages to disk)i have always had this box ticked, and im sure that i read somewhere that was the correct way to go,any advice on this would be appreciated thanks

Answer:do not save encrypted pages to disk ????

You need the Adobe reader plugin for IE9 or if you already have it then you will need to set Adobe Reader as your default viewer for PDF files.
leave the tick in Do not save...

I was researching into TrueCrypt, but on the supported operating systems Windows 8 or 8.1 was not listed.

FYI: I do not wish to downgrade to Windows 7, nor do I wish to risk running TrueCrypt on an unsupported OS.

I am running Windows 8, so BitLocker isn't an option for this version.

Are there any other software that support Windows 8 64-bit, if so could any be suggested? Preferably open-source and free for personal use.

I am looking to create a Virtual Encrypted Disk container, that will be mounted to allow me access to all personal and or sensitive documents.

Are there any other security issues I should be aware of when dealing with encrypted containers / disk?

Thanks for any help.

Hi, I had oldie T20 computer (PIII) which monitor just blew up already years ago. The hard disk of that computer had encryption. Computer always asked password when it was started. I have the PW still. However, I would like to get the data out of the hard disk. I have external case for the harddisk to connect it to my PC.  Can someone please help what to do with the encryption. Regards, Jani

Answer:Need data from encrypted hard disk.

can't you connect an external screen to the laptop, and then transfer the file from the harddrive that way??? If your hdd is encrypted (in your case a hdd password on it), using an external caddy is not the best way to transfer your file.

Guys... I am in serious trouble and need help urgently !!

I had recently brought the Seagate Backup Plus 1TB portable hard drive.
It has a freeware called Seagate Dashboard inside it.

So , I was trying that out and moved [CUT and no copy] all my data from my laptop into the HDD and I don't know how but I locked my HDD using BITLOCKER unknowingly. I have not set any password for it and tried using the recovery key to unlock it but its useless. I checked the identification key and tried various methods to unlock it but its of no use. It says that the key is incorrect and not acceptable. I think the encryption was not done properly.

I have moved all my important data from my laptop in the HDD as I have brought a new PC. There are many important files and data in it . I will be in an extremely serious trouble if my HDD does not get unlocked OR if any of my data gets deleted.

Please help me guys... I need to fix this urgently !!!

Answer:Need help urgently for unlocking bitlocker on my external HDD

Hello Excavior, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if the tutorial below may be able to help unlock the drive. It does require that you have the correct BitLocker recovery key or password though.

Hope this may help,

I was using my work laptop at work and connected my personal USB external drive to the laptop. No problem. I used the external drive to show colleagues some pictures of my new house renovation and then disconnected the drive.
However, when I reconnected the drive to my own personal laptop at home, it informed me that it was locked by bitlocker and needed a recovery to unlock it!
At no time was I requested to bitlocker it or indeed informed that bitlocker was locking the drive. This totally sucks as I have precious family photos on the drive and now cannot access them!!
Can anyone help?

Karl Marsden

Please help!
This happened when I for first time I connected my external drive to PC running on Windows 10. I have never enabled BitLocker on this drive and I don't have a key
All my work backups were on this drive and I need to unlock it, formating is not an option.
I saw that for Windows 8 there is some BitLocker Drive Encryption.
When I tried to connect it to Windows XP, 7 or 8 I dont have and option to unlock it, only to format it.
Help me please.
D.

Answer:BitLocker locked my external harddrive by itself

Try Rolling back to W8(?)/8.1 on the machine you set up Bitlocker on.

Hi. Some months before I use a private SSD temporary inside a Thinkpad with BIOS password. Today I want to use this drive as external disk inside a USB enclosure. But this drive is not writeable... I guess it depends on the BIOS password. Howto get this drive back working? It is nice that the BIOS password is a secure way to protect the disk, but I don't want to steal data, I want to use my device and delete all content of the disk! Thanks for support!

It restricted me to enter my laptop with a skull image and then a note asking for a special "key" to be generated using tor browser. It says that "The hard disk of your computer have been encrypted with an military grade encryption algorithm."
Please help me to resolve it as soon as possible, its really too very much urgent. And I strictly don't want to loose my data.

Hi all,

I got a new Toshiba Satellite L50-B notebook with Windows 8.1 64-bit installed. As I need to go a special place, I passed the notebook to a IT guy and have the whole disk encrypted using DiskCryptor. The guy told me that he cannot boot the OS, even he entered the correct password. And one more nice thing. The guy did NOT make recovery discs first!

Since the hard disk is encrypted I cannot boot it. Also I cannot do a system recovery. I booted the notebook into Linux and copied all the content in the recovery partition to a USB drive.

Now, I would like to know if I can get my machine up and running again. I don't mind all my content will be lost as it is a new machine.

Would you show me how to make a set of custom recovery disc out of the content in the recovery partition?
Do I need to format my hard disk in UEFI mode? if so, how?

Please help!

Answer:New Toshiba L50-B Hard disk encrypted! how to recover?

The simplest thing to do would be to order the recovery discs from Toshiba.

What is the full model number? Like: Satellite L50-BBT2N22
