Lenovo X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time..

Question: Lenovo X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time..

I went out and bought a 128gb 1.8" SSD for the purpose of upgrading my x301 to Win 7. I really wanted to preserve my old XP environment on the stock 64gb.

I did a fresh Win 7 Ultimate install, initially I installed the 64bit version but found my VPN software would not support it so then I wiped and installed 32 bit. I did leave the 100mb partition that the 64bit version created.

Installed Win 7 32bit, installed the lenovo software update program and let it put all of the software on the laptop. Did the win 7 update thing (this all took the better part of a day).

I wresteled the TPM chip and now have it owned by win 7. Had to do the "hit esc" till the red win7 loader, power off, enter bios, clear keys method, but it worked. Now Win 7 says it ownes the tpm.

Trying to turn on Bitlocker doing the "key test" results in the screen on every reboot saying that something has changed. I then turned on bitlocker, let it encrypt drive without doing the test and it completed sucessfully but every reboot asks for the recovery key.

I've tried just about every "fix" I can find for this, including, changing bios boot order to only include hdd, suspending/resuming BL and a host of other things as well, bios updated. Nothing seems to work. I'd really like to use bit locker but not if it is not going to work right.

I did come across a post that involved some policy editing then turning of/on again and have not yet tried that.

Just wondering if leaving the 100meg partition from my first 64bit install might have something to do with my probelm as I've read that is where they keys are stored.

Since all of this encrypting/descrypting takes a lot of time so I'm limited on how much I can do.

Any suggestions would be great. Seems like lots of people have trouble with bitlocker for various reasons.

Preferred Solution: Lenovo X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo X301 Bitlocker asking for recover key every time..

I believe I found the problem enabling bitlocker on my x301. I tried just about every possible thing I could find on the internet and was unable to get it enabled. Every time on the next boot I would get the message (pre windows), from the bios that the environment had been changed and bitlocker would fail to encrypt the drive. If I encrypted the drive without the bitlocker test it would encrypt but every boot would make me enter the recovery key in order to boot.

Last night I found a post that indicated that bitlocker would make a 300 meg partition (100 for itself, 200 for oem utilities). That got me thinking. Today I decided to shrink my system partition and leave some unpartitioned space on the drive in case it was trying to make this partition. That's when things changed. Suddenly bitlocker started working properly. I still only see the 100 meg windows partition, but maybe there is another hidden partition that it was unable to create because I had given all the space to my system drive. I left 500 megs unpartitioned, enabled bitlocker and it's working fine. For me, problem solved.

Hope this helps someone. One nice thing about Win7 is that it allows you to shrink/expand volumns right from disk management so no playing around with PE boot disks.

I have just updated my new X301 running Vista 32 bit with the latest BIOS and I get a boot failure message which refers to Bitlocker. After ignoring this the laptop will then boot.In an effort to fix this I disabled bitlocker and the machine rebooted OK.I then tried to enable bitlocker which now fails with the following message: The BIOS did not correctly communicate with the MBR. Please help!!

Answer:X301 - Bitlocker fails after BIOS update

Hi jasonw, welcome to the Lenovo Community! If you are using BitLocker, the BIOS upgrade sequence is: 1. Disable BitLocker (don't decrypt).2. Upgrade the BIOS.3. Enable BitLocker. It sounds like you did Step 2 before Step 1?

Hello,
my laptop has freezed, I restart it with power button but now, at start up, BitLocker said that:

You need to enter your recovery key because Secure Boot has been disabled. Either Secure Boot must be re-enabled, or BitLocker must be suspended for Windows to start normally.

I gone to UEFI settings and define a password to re-enabled Secure Boot but BitLocker when I restart comptuer said that Bios secure parameters has changed... It doesn't solve the problem.

The problem is I don't have my recovery key. I tried to recover my recovery key using Microsoft account but I had to update my phone number and so my security settings are locked for one month. My question is :
Is it possible to boot on Ubuntu USB key or plug HDD to an Ubuntu computer, copy files and decrypt them one by one with my password session ?Is it possible to retrieve my recovery key using Windows command line and session password ? (I can access to Windows recovery menu so I have access to commands line.)Is a program to decrypt completely my hard drive exists ? I will write it on a USB key, start it, enter my session password and it will decrypt all the disk or something like that.
Thanks a lot.

Answer:How can I recover my BitLocker recovery key

What do you mean by "session password?"

Assuming you are using a TPM with BitLocker (which is the default) then there is no way to recover your drive without the recovery key. That is the entire point of BitLocker.

Question: X301 SSD Boot Time

Hi,I'm considering the X301 with a SSD. I'm not sure if I'm going to buy now or just hold up until Win7 or a hardware refresh. One thing I'm concerned with is boot time. Can anyone tell me what their getting on a X301 with MS Office loaded for boot time, hibernate time and wake time? I'm not planning to use the dvd and will have the 6 and 3 cell batteries installed. Thanks. Regards-Michael G.

Answer:X301 SSD Boot Time

just so you know, windows 7 could be up to a year away.  my X300 would boot server 2008 in about 35 seconds to the desktop with aero installed.   i never used vista on it. hibernate... dunno.   i never use it. sleep and wake only took a few seconds.   sleep was roughly 10 seconds and wake about 2. office 2003 apps loaded in about 3~5 seconds depending on the app. i haven't had the chance to play with an X301 but would imagine it to be the same or slightly quicker due to the faster memory bus. hopefully that helps a bit. good luck!

To install another operating system, I forced to resize my partitions.
I had a drive that was encrypted with bitlocker. After changing the drive and restart I noticed there were only two of the drives that on them Windows installed and another drives changed to free space.
Bitlocker encrypted drive was 100G and another drive 244G. Drives I converted to a drive then format it to restore my data. All the information was not encrypted, was returned but encrypted data was not returned even one bit. I changed the size of D to 200 GB again and after a lot of searching I found the repair-bde command.

this was result.
is there any solution to back my data?

Hello Dears. I had encrypted my drive by Bitlocker in windows 7.
few days after my friend did quick format in my encrypted drive.
my 300 gb of data lost. and nothing saved
i remember unlock password.
how can i recover my data ??? i need my data
i tried drive recovering tools (advanced EFS data recovery, easeus . . ,) . but . . . it's encrypted and formatted drive.
can i undo quick format and decrypt ???
sorry my english is not good.
someone help me please.

Answer:Can i recover lost data from encrypted drive by Bitlocker

BitLocker is not the cause of failed to recover files. Format a drive will clear all data saved on the hard disk. Thus recovery formatted data will be a hard disk based technology but not related to operation system. There is no build-in data recovery feature in Windows operations. So we will needto use third party recovery tool or contact third party data recovery company for current issue.

As recovery missing data service will be expensive, we can also check emails and contact friends to see if that can help get a part of files back especially for photos, documents etc.

Hello,
I accidently formatted one of my drives which was previously encrypted.
I tried some third party software as "recover my file" but it didn't work.
Later then, I experimented on a formatted (not encrypted before) usb drive to recover files by same software and it did work.
After that, I encrypted the usb drive and then formatted it. Then I tried to recover by same software, but it didn't work. So, it's apparent that it is not possible to recover from a encrypted and formatted drive by a usual recovery software. Is there any
other method that can help me.
Please inform, I'm in a dire need.
Thanks.

Hi!
I am running Windows 7 Enterprise with Bitlocker.
Unfortunately I ran into problems booting up and eventually it looked like the harddrive (SSD) was malfunctioning. My backup solution was fresh so I haven't given it much thought, just replaced the drive, but I would still like to know if it's possible to
recover data from the drive while it's encrypted with Bitlocker?
I have searched the net for info but none of them seem to focus on my problem; the drive itself shows no volume information, so I'm unable to run any decryption protocols on it. Therefore I'm unable to run any recovery software on it either.
I'm afraid I might've made the situation worse with my attempts at recovery, but still, any help is appreciated!

Best Regards,
Heini

I have owned at least 5 Lenovo Thinkpads during the last 10 years. All the laptops in  my home were made by Lenovo. But I notice that the quality of Thinkpads are not as good as before. People want to pay for what he suppose to pay, not only for a brand.I purchased a X301 on late 2010 when a promotion was gaven for X301, later on I realized that Lenovo clearanced and then discontinued X300 series. It was put in a corner as a backup fro my T61P. Only few chance I used my X301 before the battery completely dead, cann't be charged. Information shows that the battery only been used for 46 times.I did not expect Lenovo will replace the battery since it was out of warranty. But I found there is a recall for several thinkpads' batteries no matter in or out of warranty. My x301 is not included.I guess the recall is necessary for defective products, the one I do not understand is that why a laptop with which a retail price for ~$2000 was only run for 46 cycles.I contacted customer with my concern, was transferd to rechnique support, was asked for the S/N number then told me that they can not do anything, any further support would be charged, they need my credit number in order to help. The lady who I talked with even pretended that she can not understand me when I asked if she can give me a chance to talk with a supervisor.

Hi,
please help
how can I recover data from a damaged disk (not physically) of an external encrypted Bitlocer.
Description of the situation:

After connecting the drive - I can decipher it by typing the password - but when you try to open the contents of the report the message "format disk"
- the disk probably has some volume damaged - it has been disconnected from the computer (without being turned off)
What I have done so far:

Using the "Lazesoft" program - I managed to copy (of course after entering the password
on the damaged disk)
the content to another external disk (full - looking after size) but -
this data is encrypted (mainly ending with .ER)
I am asking for a hint:

whether the data that is on the new disk can somehow read (on this disk I can try) [or/and]how to create a damaged disk image to try on another disk [or/and]how to repair a damaged disk (as a last resort) - I am afraid of total data loss [or/and]what other program to use to copy data from a damaged disk
but decrypted
Thank you in advance for your help

Hi!At first I hope I'm posting in the right forum for my questions about the upcoming X301. If not, please move to the right section.Next I want to ask a few questions about some facts I read in the first reviews of the X301 (sources see below). First the reviewers experience a notable shorter battery life of the Thinkpad X301 (3h max without the additional bay battery) compared to the X300 (4.5h max without the additional bay battery). Is this true or do you will there be any optimizations which will lengthen battery life until you sale them?Next, one of the testing sites mention, the boot time is about 1min 37sec on first startup, which is again far longer than booting the X300 on first startup. Will here also be some optimizations till shipping the X301?  I'm referring to these sources:geek.comGottaBeMobile.comLaptop MagazineTigerDirect videomaybe anyone can send this to someone official, who may answer my questions?greetings from Austria,myAces

Hello to everybody.I'm new in this community. I've been a ThinkPad user since 1997 (600, R52, T60p) and now I've bought a X301 with Win 7 32 bit.Comparing the Laptop with my previous T60p with Win XP, I have some doubts about the configuration and the preinstalled software (Think Vantage Tools) wich comes with it. Maybe someone here can help me.My doubts are:- why is not possible to get the productivity center and get it in association with the blue button?- why is the Active Protection software pre-installed (and loaded at startup), when the HD is an SSD one?- the GPS doesn't work (Only one time I've got one satellite in an open environment, where my phone gets full GPS coverage, otherweise normal is 0 satellite)- the fingerprint recognition at startup is very very slow- every Lenovo software, when launched, opens very slowly (minutes). This is the situation I've found out of the box. I'm wondering whether the Laptop has left the factory with a wrong configuration (I mean, for Win 7 and SSD) and if I would be able to set everything in the right status through the use of System-Update. Thank-you to everyone and, please, excuse my terrible English. Occam

Hello, This question is aimed towards current X301 owners. I recently bought a refurbished X301 from Lenovo and noticed that the right display hinge is not as firm as the left hinge. So if the machine is open (display creates 90 degree angle with keyboard) and i pull against the top right corner of the display, the movement seems loose. When i do the same thing to the left hand corner, the movement is much more firm. So if anyone else has an X301, i was wondering if you notice the same thing. The reason i am asking is because one of the main features of Lenovo that i like is that everything generally feels firm. This situation reminds me what an Acer feels like when trying to close the screen. Thanks

Hi!I am planning to purchase a Lenovo X301 in the near future; however, I'd like an even faster and larger hard disc than provided by Lenovo, e.g. 250GB SSD modelhttp://www.ocztechnology.com/products/flash_drives/ocz_core_series_v2_sata_ii_2_5-ssd However, it's not clear to me if the internal SSD hard disc in X301 is a standard  2.5" form factor with standard connector, or a special customized model. Following instructions on lenovo webpages I 've installed ThinkVantage toolbox via System Update. It got standard set of lenovo software (diagnostic, performance tuning, power management, etc), Then I begun reading about Intel Centrino 2 vPro platform and realized that there should be more Lenovo tools to take advantage of the platform functionality. Found couple extra, for instance,  "Client security solution" 1_ Where I can find all relevant Lenovo software tools for my particular model? 2_ How I determine whether notebook has 3G capability? Thankscherno

Answer:How to find all Lenovo relevant software for X301

Hello,

As I understand it, model types ending in -CTO are a Configure-To-Order system, which means they are customized at checkout by the purchaser.  That said, you can find all of the possible device drivers for this configuration at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/quickPath.do?quickPathEntry=2777CTO on the support web site.

If you just want to install the device drivers automatically, though, instead of downloading and installing each one manually, you can download and run the ThinkVantage System Update program, which will automatically detect and install any missing device drivers?including those for a 3G modem, if installed?as well as anyThinkPad-specific programs.

I'm posting this to the forum only because my calls to IBM (1-800-IBM-SERVE) support center to inform of problems inherent in the new X301 seem to fall on deaf ears. As we now have several X301's and all have the same problems, you would think that Lenovo would want to hear it.  But tech support says "It's a new machine and someone will eventually update the drivers." It was clear to me that they were not taking note of the reported problems nor would there be any effort to report our issues to engineering. The problems we reported were...VERIZON WAN internal radio is off but the light on the keyboard says its on.VERIZON WAN radio frequently disappears from the "Access Connections" program.VERIZON WAN fails to connect to the network 75% of the time when using Lenovo's Access Connections but will connect 100% of the time when we use the VZAccess Manager Program.  This program is not included with the laptop but can be downloaded from Verizon Wireless.Internal Wireless (8211.x) radio will often fail to reconnect when coming out of "sleep mode".Battery seems to drain while in sleep mode.  A battery charged to 100% and then put into sleep mode will loose 25% of battery in 10 hours which seems very excessive. My opinion is that the x301 is a great, fast and light machine but that the drivers particularly when it come to integration with Lenovo's Access Connections program need to be improved. Lenovo technical support seems lethargic for the ... I also have the exact problems mentioned by aselgat.  Seems there are numerous other posts regarding the WWAN problems.  Although the "Verizon International workaround" works for the WWAN connection, I would like to add that the connection continuously drops and cannot be reconnected via Access Connections without going through the workaround procedure again.  Very frustrating and I see no real solutions yet.  Where's the driver update???

Dear community,  I recently updated my BIOS using the thinkvantage flash BIOS utility for no reason other than it appeared on the update utility. I also updated the model number, once again for no real reason other than update pleasure. Now, everything works perfectly fine on the system, and I have no problems EXCEPT: I use New York Times Adobe Air product called "Times Reader". Since the update, when I try to log into the Times Reader I get an error that states "Authentication Error. Check that your system time is set correctly." In the pre-boot set up screen the time seems to be set right, and in the windows utility the time is set correctly. So my questions is, after a BIOS flash / Model # update, does the system time function need some re-boot / update?  Thanks!

Using the Thinkvantage update program you will find that today an updated version of Access Connections is available for download. In my trials today the Verizon profile now connects.  I hope it holds as this was an issue that really soured the X301 experience. Moderator edit: Changed X310 in Subject to X301. Hi all, The saga of the X301 OS re-instal continues :-) Everything is seemingly operating as a base lap top, however the lap top after the re-install does not contain it's IBM/Lenovo specific software. Examples: 1. Thinkvantage blue button not functioning2. Internet connection is done solely through Windows and not the IBM network connection3. Mouse mat works but the scroll page up and across functionality has been lost4. Sometimes when typing it shoots the cursor off down the page I have nothing on the system (hardware) stating that it requires a driver. Any help or assistance appreciated. Best Regards Liam Fassam

Hello everybody, Today I restored my Lenovo X301 as I do regularly and I decided to make some driver updates. The card stopped working when I updated my Ericsson HSPA card using the latest drivers provided on Lenovo's website.I tried everything. Restoring the computer again using an image of the partition didn't help either. The hardware doesn't show anywhere in the device manager... I'm suspecting either the drivers for the HSPA card or the power manager drivers to be at the source of my issue... Any idea for me please? Thanks a lot

Hello

Thought I'd ask before I do something stupid
I'd like to encrypt my fileservers with Bitlocker but I wonder how fast it is these days? The servers run Windows 8.1 and when trying on another system I get about 100MB reads and writes during encryption - is this somewhere in the ballpark for performance? Oh and the cpu supports hardware encryption as well

Thanks in advance
Edit:

Just finished encrypting a Raid6 array with 8x2TB drives. Time approximately 24 hours and an average speed of about 125-130MB/sec. Cpu is an AMD A4 5300 dual core cpu. Not so bad imho.

I've never used Bitlcoker before

Have win 8.1 pro

Can I use this to encrypt my office 365 access database files or folders, too?

If so, how?

Also, I'm currently saving files to 'skydrive / myusername'. Is that the same as the new Onedrive pro?

I want to understand where to save my files to have BOTH local & onedrive copies. THANKS !

Answer:How to use BitLocker for first time user

Bitlocker is only for Drives, USBs, partitions and other forms of drive. However Bitlocker is not available for skydrive for it is not a drive. You can encrypt files by using Microsoft Office's built-in encryption. If you want you can put your local files on a usb or you can make a partition and then encrypt it with bitlocker.

There is no other way that I know that can encrypt BOTH local and Onedrive, your best option is to encrypt all the files one by one using Microsoft office's encryption (or password lock)

I recently bought a Lenovo X301 version 2776-L9U.I also bought a genuine Lenovo Vodafone WWAN card Lenovo Part 43R1821 to go in it, to use in the UK.I installed the card, no probs. When I boot the laptop, I get Error 1804 Unauthorised WAN Card is plugged in - Power off and remove the WAN card. I did some research, and you are meant to get this message if you plug in a non-lenovo WWAN card. But this is a genuine card. I understand the BIOS has a white list of 'approved' cards. So I checked the latest BIOS version for the X301 to see if there is an update, and there is not - I have the latest BIOS. So what next ? Does anyone know if this is an oversight that will be fixed in the next BIOS version ? I know there are various hacks to get generic cards recognised, but I would rather not go down that route, since I have bought all Lenovo parts, so this should work fine, shouldn't it ? I am new to Lenovos, so if anyone can recommend anyone at Lenovo I should contact, it would be appreciated. (I bought Lenovo because I thought it would just work, but it isn't working out that way just yet!) Best regardsSteve

steve, welcome to the forum. the vodaphone card in question is authorized for the X61, X61s,X61 tablet, and X300.   unfortunately the X301 does not have this card whitelisted and likely won't be adding support for it in the future. a current list of authorized cards can be found in the X301 hardware maintenance manual.

Using a Dell tablet, with Windows 8.1, I now have to enter the 64-digit bitlocker recovery key every time I power up the tablet.  After doing
so, it permits me to continue to restart.  Previously, I was only required to enter a password to get to the desktop.  If I run Windows update, or any other process which might require a restart, it will do so without having to reenter the bitlocker
key.  How may I determine what caused this change in powering up the tablet, requiring the entry of more that just a normal password?  This just occurred within the last 1-2 months.

I have automatic incremental backups scheduled to run every day at 6PM of our server (Win 2008 r2). The task backups up important folders to 2 different external drives (X: and Y: ) running bitlocker. They are set to automatically unlock on the server when connected.

Once a day when I get in the office in the morning I swap the drives for an off-site backup. Every few days (about 80% of the time), one of them remains locked still after plugging it in until I double click it under Computer, then it unlocks (no password, which is how it's set).

If I don't manually go n check and it's locked, the backup fails that night. How can I get it to automatically unlock right when I plug it in 100% of the time?

Answer:Bitlocker Not Auto-Mounting Drives Every Time

I think I solved it. I was just unplugging the drive every time but for a week+ I "safely removed it" within Windows before unplugging it and it seems to mount fine every time so far.

Hi, I have a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro (x64) on my X1 Yoga, installed in UEFI mode. I wish to encrypt the drive with Bitlocker with TPM and PIN. Another user on a different thread alluded that this is not possible as the X1 Yoga I have uses a PCIe-NVMe disk, for which there is no hardware support for Bitlocker. Is this correct or am I confused?

Answer:Lenovo X1 Yoga (20FQ) BitLocker with TPM and PIN

I meant you cannot use the AES hardware engine of the NVMe SSD (if a SED like the OPAL2 option) - but you can use software BitLocker just fine. This means the CPU will have to do the crypto instead for some performance penalty depending on your I/O - see CPU utilisation during a benchmark for example. Also do note that using FDE (full disk encryption) on a SSD is not "great" as the whole disk "looks full" to the SSD - so you may need to over-provision for best performance. You can also use "encrypt only used space" instead. There are pros and cons for each.

I had a lot of issues with the screen blinking/flickering on/off when removing the laptop from the WD-15 dock and read that the new BIOS upgrade would fix this issue so I went ahead and upgraded the BIOS.
I installed "DellDockingStationFwUp_1.0.0.8_20161220_WD15.exe" and "XPS_9550_1.2.21.exe".
I added Bitlocker protection the first thing I did when I got the laptop about a year ago and it has been working fine.
After this upgrade (with or without) the dock attached I get the Bitlocker code prompt at every start of the laptop.
I can't seem to roll back the FW upgrades as the installer tells me I have a newer version installed...

Answer:Windows 10 Bitlocker code required every time after BIOS upgrade on XPS 15 9560

After searching and checking I found that I no longer have any compatible TPM according to Windows.
(Win 10 Enterprise 64bit Build 14393)
Looking in the BIOS there is no setting for TPM anymore so then I found a way to rollback BIOS FW.
It was by shutting down, unplug the power plug and then keep CTRL+ESC pressed while plugging in the power plug. That brings up a prompt where I could do a rollback and after that tehre still is no TPM in BIOS. I run the same again but this time I chose to reset the BIOS settings, still no TPM!
I still have to give the Bitlocker key at every startup and to top it off the laptop no longer goes to sleep when the lid is closed, it shuts down even though the settings is to "sleep".
This of course means that every time I carry it around I have to add the Bitlocker key when picking it up.
Our corporate network requires Bitlocker so I can't use the laptop without bitlocker in the domain.
Any suggestions?

Team - Trouble here!! Have ~730 GB of data on my 1TB iOmega HDD. Turned on BitLocker on my Windows 7
system, set password, created and saved recovery key file, and i saw it started encrypting (very slowly, which i think is normal). Left it there for hours and when i came back I saw it is asking me for my password for my unlocking... which i entered and it
just wont open. Goes "NOT RESPONDING". I did not lose power during the initial encryption and neither did i pull out the HDD (to my knowledge) even though I read in the MS content that encryption should resume the next time a drive is plugged in,
it it got interrupted the first time or whatsoever.

However, started my research and was shocked to find several people have had similar problems. Also references that data must be backed up before encrypting (may
be common sense). Well, i have not done that, did not know that a simple of act of encrypting could be such a crime, especially when you are encrypting what you have just taken a backup off - before proceeding towards a formatting of my laptop.

Tried the manage-bde commands and the results are in a pic that i cannot attach. Interestingly, i find that the "manage-bde -status" command shows "conversion status" and "percentage of encryption" as unknown. Is this normal? I
do not really remember seeing any screen (when i came back after hours to check the status of the initial BitLock'ing) stating "hey i am done&quo... Read more

HELP, just bought my first Thinkpad, the X301 from tigerdirect. Everything's great except that it freezes every now and then, at least once a day.  Haven't installed anything other than factory pre-installed stuff, thought it was the McAfee hence got rid of it, running AVG antivirus now. Thought it was IE so switched to Firefox, no help there neither, Google Chrome, still freezes. Strange thing is, on Vista Business, when it freezes, there is nothing you can do except for HARD RESET!  I mean CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing at all, neither did CTRL-SHIFT-ESC. Are there any other owners facing the same issues? Updated the X301 with patches, both ThinkVantage and Windows, still hangs. It's very annoying to pay such a high price to go back to primitive Windows that freezes.  Is this normal? Please help. Thank you. Message Edited by teeteet on 10-27-2008 08:35 AM

Answer:X301 - Freezes all the time, CTRL-ALT-DEL / CTRL-SHIFT-ESC no effect

I had a similar issue with my Tigerdirect x301 but seemed to have resolved it by doing a clean install of Vista. There is a good thread on the forums over on notebookreview.com on how to do this. In my particular case I eliminated most of the extra but IMO unneeded software that came with it and went with 64bit Vista business since I had that OEM disc from my desktop build. I did have one temporary problem in the clean install with it stopping the Vista installation, saying I needed a driver for the Mat**bleep**a CD/DVD device, but I eventually got around that by going into the BIOS and switching the SATA controller mode option to Compatibility from AHCI mode. I got this thing last week and it must have froze 10-12 times in the first two days and in the five days since I did the clean install it has not crashed once and I swear it does everything faster.  Just this afternoon I added another 2 gb of RAM and looking forward to see what 4 gb will do for speed.

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried...
    ...to format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

Hi Community, i've tried to install Bitlocker on my Lenovo Helix with Windows 8.1 Pro. As long as the dock is connected with the tablet, you can decrypt the harddisk with the right key. But if the tablet hasn't a dock or an external keyboard you'll only see the blue bitlocker-homescreen and can't do anything.Another helix in my company works with bitlocker - so i know it can work.i've tried the following things:     - different Bios-Versions     - install all drivers and additional software     - set up a new Windows 8/ Windows 8.1 (Pro)  The on-screen keyboard works by adding a Bios-password.Btw: The helix won't let me install Windows in UEFI-Mode.. Can somebody help me?

Answer:Lenovo Helix - On-Screen Keyboard with Bitlocker

The on-screen keyboard capability was added to BIOS in late 2013, so I'm pretty sure you're using a capable BIOS by now.  But I believe the on-screen keyboard only works when Windows is installed in UEFI mode.
I've not heard of a case where you can't install Windows 8.1 in UEFI mode on Helix.

Hello All, I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my Lenovo Y500. I would like to encrypt the system drive. I *could* use TrueCrypt but Win 7 Ult already has BitLocker build in so I'm trying to use that. The problem is BitLocker reports that "This computer does not appear to have a TPM". Either BitLocker is not detecting a trusted platform module or the Y500 does not have a TPM. I don't know much about this but it seems that a TPM is an actual piece of hardware -- a chip on the mainboard or a separate circuit board. Am I right? I checked the BIOS and cannot find any mention of a TPM. I'm suspecting that the IdeaPad Y500 is simply not designed to support BitLocker. Is that correct? Maybe this community can help confirm my suspicion that BitLocker is properly supported by the Thinkpads (and other business level machines) but not the gaming/home systems like the Ideapads. If the above is true then my next question is; is there any way to get BitLocker working? I can tweak the local group policy to allow encryption without a TPM but then I must use a USB flash drive to unlock the system at boot (which sounds incontinent).

Answer:Lenovo Y500. Trying to get Windows 7 BitLocker to work.

Hi Darthpenguin, welcome to the forums,

simply put, you are correct. To the best of my knowledge none of the Idea systems are equipped with a TPM chip; they are considered as consumer systems where encryption will generally not be an issue. I can confirm that the majority of ThinkPads do have versions with the TPM chip on board.

Hello everyone,I purchased a T440s about a year ago. Long story short, I was not able to log into my computer using my bitlocker password (recovery key still worked). After about 3 months of going back and forth with Lenovo and filing a small claims lawsuit (absolutly terrible customer service experience) I recieved a new computer, a T450s. I assumed the original computer had a motherboard issue or something and thought my problem was solved. Fast forward another 4 months and another of my computers, another T-450s, is having the same issue - bitlocker will not accept the password. The problem is intermittant so I have been using the recovery key to login when needed. This computer is a month past it's warranty so I'm sure I won't get any help from Lenovo. So another month goes by and a third computer is having the same issue! This laptop is an E450. Hi everyone. I'm trying to set up Bitlocker with TPM + Pin for some company laptops. They're Lenovo E550's with windows 8.1 Pro. The issue I'm having is that I'm unable to change the lockout threshold/ failed attempts settings.  TPM 2.0 is being used. After testing I've found it's default settings are set at 32 failed attempts before lockout with a reset of 1 attempt every 2 hours. I've tried altering the settings Standard User Lockout Duration, Standard User Individual Lockout Threshold, and Standard User Total Lockout Threhold in GPO to no avail. All attempts at finding a fix have been unsuccesful.  TPM 1.2 doesn't seem to have a default and also won't take the GPO settings when set. I've updated the BIOS, cleared TPM keys several times, tried different settings, forced the GPO to update, on a laptop joined to our domain and one that wasn't joined to the domain with no change.  Are the settings just broken or am I missing something?

Let me start by saying I don't know for sure what those GPO settings do, and it would be better to get advice from Microsoft about this topic, since it's their OS and their GPO settings.

Having said that, I have read the description of those GPOs and the thing that sticks out at me is the description "Standard User".  BitLocker has no concept of users, and especially at preboot, BitLocker cannot possibly know what kind of user is entering the PIN.  So, my feeling is that these GPOs don't apply to the BitLocker preboot PIN request.  Instead, I think those GPOs are about software that uses the TPM from within Windows (e.g. the Certicate Service Provider, credential provider, etc).

Hi all I have the following question: Is it possible to use BitLocker and all of the Lenovo security solution tools (like Client Security Solution tpm) at the same time? I don't know much about the detailed technical background which is used by TPM, so I think that the data (logon credentials) which are stored for login at startup from bitlocker, if choosen (i prefer this method not the usb alternative), can be lost or overwritten by the tools of lenovo. Thanks chris

I have problems with the boot time and shut down time of my Thinpad Edge. It takes about 30 seconds (the loading screen) after I log in using password until the desktop appears. And then everytime I shut down the computer, it keeps showing the "waiting for background program to close" screen but there aren't any program listed in the screen. Does anyone know how to improve this?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 14 experiencing slow boot time and shut down time

hey nitefury, did you install any new software or run and anti-virus programs ? There are some software that takes system resources but wont show at the "waiting for the background program to close" section.also check if you have any application that "runs when windows starts"

Recently i bought a Lenovo y500 laptop with 12 ram and 16gigs of SSD. It came with Windows 8 by deffault and what i wanted was to install Linux Ubuntu 12.04 alognside with the Windows 8. It didn't work out, because i could only log into linux. When i tried to log in in Widonws it said: "unknown command drivemap      invalid EFI file path, so i used the one key recovery. It loaded Windows but i noticed 2 things:1st. After loading the Lenovo logo the screen turns black without the cursor on it and stays that way for about 17-25 sec. That means that from 20 sec boot time now it is 40+.How could i fix that one?2nd. After creating the backup i divided the 1tb disk into smaller discs and after the rocovery they were the way i left them with all the games and media on them. I thought that the one key recovery would undo the partiton i have made. The 2nd one isnt bugging me out so much but the 20 secs extra boot time do. The changes i have made in bios are disabling secure boot and switching boot mode from UEFI to legacy. After that i switched secure boot to enabled and the boot mode to UEFI as it was in the beginning.

Answer:Lenovo y500 black screen after the lenovo logo slows down boot time

hi psskobraa,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Regarding your questions:
1. The additional 17-25sec boot time is probably caused by the UEFI Firmware / UEFI boot loader (see this flowchart) - this probably got modified when you installed Ubuntu. Can you try to boot back into the BIOS, press F9 to load default settings then press F10 to save It settings. If this doesn't work, is the boot time the same when Disabling Secure Boot and UEFI set to Disabled/Legacy first?

2. OneKey Recovery usually reimage the OS partition only (i.e. C:\) and will not affect any other partitions (i.e. D:\)

Best regards,
neokenchi

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large
size. During the encryption I needed to disconnect it so I paused the encryption like it says to do before removing or changing any files on it. I then plugged my drive into a newer laptop I have that operates on Windows 10,. I was prompted for the Bitlocker
Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,
there for I cannot just reset my password using the key and get back to normal again. Any way to find the lost number to the key? As I do have the rest of it written correctly please help tha... Read more

Hello,

I have here two Lenovo Yoga 2 13 which initialy run with Windows 8.1. After the Windows 10 Upgrade this two laptops starts to throw the BSOD 133. There is no way to replicate the BSOD. The two laptops can work for a week without the BSOD and the next week the BSOD 133 happens every second day and after this it works again for a few days. It happens when the laptop is in use or when it just stand there - I didn't see any thing which is always the same so I could say this triggers the BSOD.
I made a clean install (removed everything - partitions and so on) of Windows 10 Home on one of this two Yogas. But the bluescreen wasn't fixed. Same like before. Bluescreenview tells me always the same drivers: igdkmd64.sys or hal.dll or hdaudbus.sys and always ntoskrnl.exe. I updated the sound and gfx driver and tweaked the energy settings but nothing what I try helps. Did I miss something in the minidump files and another driver is the problem?

Thank you
Thomas

Answer:BSOD 133 from time to time on two Lenovo Yoga 2 13

Hi hitzi,

Welcome to the 10forums

Please check Lenovo for driver updates for the touchpad drivers for the Windows 10 Home system, per the dumps and WER logs the Synaptics drivers look to be causing the crashes.

Please upload logs from the DM Log Collector for the Windows 10 Pro system, analysis for each system is required as 2 systems having the same BSODs does not mean the causes are the same.

Please fill in your system specsPlease follow this tutorial and download the tool. The tool will give you detailed information about your system specs, please fill in your system specs more completely including PSU, cooling and other used stuff like mouse, keyboard, monitor, case, etc.

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

I tried using HP BIOS Flashing utility on my HP Z400 Workstation, and it says it can't continue because I have Bitlocker enabled, but I don't have bitlocker on Win 7 Professional 32bit. I don't see it on the control panel or in context menus. I do see it set to manual in "Services" but the service in not running. Is there a way to find drives Bitlocked or are my drives being treated as bitlocked because of my antivirus program AVG?

Answer:BIOS flash error, BITLOCKER on? No bitlocker installed, Win 7 Pro

In the services window is there and option to disable or turn off...there should be. Just change the startup type from manual to disable and reboot. Then try your BIOS update.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

Purchased a Lenovo G710 laptop with Windows 8.1. Was anxious to start setting it up. Found that usernames and passwords were used everywhere. At first, I misspelled the username for my son and he gave me the wrong PW. That will give you a clue to the rest of the day. During this process I installed a couple of email clients, trying to get one to accept a PW. That is when he called me and admitted that he gave me the wrong PW.
Reading the manual, I find that the restore operation will reset the system to where it was when it left the factory.

My question is; If I use the restore and remove the email clients will I be able to START OVER with the setup? That would save me a lot of time and mistakes.

Hello, When I turn on my computer I get in to "system service mode of W8" where I should choose from Restore / Recover/....,but none of them works in fact. I would like to reinstall the system so I need to download a Windows 8 ISO. Can you tell me where can I get it? I tried to fix it with recovery partition but it was unsuccessfully. Can I run recovery  directly from Command prompt??Thank You S/N: R300MH68

Answer:Lenovo H50 - 50 - can not recover system W8

If you did not create your own recovery Media via Windows 8.1, you will probably need to create Windows Installation Media on a DVD or USB flash drive using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool (it is free).     Once you have created the Installation Media, you can use it to try to repair your current installation (option in lower left on second screen), refresh you current Windows installation and preserve your data, or reinstall Windows and discard your data..      Create installation media for Windowshttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media BTW   You should probably edit your original post and remove the serial number, because someone could use that to impersonate you with Lenovo. Good Luck,
