So I found this as I was trying to find out how to send a false positive to McAfee Avert Labs and was intrigued so I tried it.
McAfee Active Protection
I was first puzzled by its description so I googled it and found out it was actually the Artemis Technology. Here's the article I read about from McAfee:
McAfee, Inc. Reinvents Computer Security
After reading that I was so impressed and tried it. I was not contented of how McAfee secures my PC so I needed to find a way to boost it's protection. When the installation was completed I downloaded some fresh Malware from the Malwarebytes forum and was surprisingly startled as how McAfee blocked off almost every malware I downloaded. I accept any criticism from anybody who hates McAfee but I was proven that I might stick with this one for a while. I am open to any opinions on what I have found.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
If I can remember correctly, in newer versions of Mcafee Security centre you should already have Artemis preinstalled. And have settings where you configure it (on that install you were talking about, you can't configure it), So there shoulnd't be any need to additionally install it.
But I can't remember clearly. Maybe they have implemented Artemis only for some products.
But I don't think so, I think all McAfee now have Artemis preinstalled eventhough they don;t have configurations.
Artemis is very good addition to McAfee but it's is known for it's relatively high false positives rate.
Basically, Artemis is cloud scanner. If scanner detects something suspicious it will send it to the cloud scan and scan it there.
Detctions from Artemis will be called Artemis! and some new generated number or something like this. So actually you will know that it was detected by Artemis.
I've never posted in this forum before (that I can remember) and if this is in the wrong place, forgive me. I just thought this would be the best place to ask.
Found this link over at SlashDot:
http://www.echannelline.com/usa/story.cfm?item=23681
My take on this is that McAfee would like us to think this is some kind of breakthrough; but, the way I read it, it isn't as much a breakthrough as it is simply a shaving of the response time (and eChannelLine having a slow news day).
Anyone care to comment?
hi, I'm using t420. I've replaced the HDD with a Crucial M4 SSD. I have some questions. The HDD will stop when a shock detected by TheThinkvantageActiveProtectionSystem. But now i'm using a SSD, I don't know that the Disk can be caused by stopping when a shock detected. Should I worry about it?
An SSD has no moving parts so there's no need to run APS. If you don't have any HDDs inside your T420, e.g. in the Ultrabay or mSATA, you can just uninstall APS altogether.
8 more repliesHello,
I was with Talktalk which had a family protection filter which you could enable/disbale various categories. Eg you could disable all filesharing, gaming etc sites and this applied to all devices conencting through the modem router. This was all to stop the kids accidently coming across inappropriate websites.
I have moved to BT and their package came with Mcafee family protection. However, this software/filter system seems very hard to set up and is for each user individually rather than all users. I have set the age setting for my daughter but it's so strict it blocks google and youtube.
I have gone through Mcafee setup instructions and checked online.
Is their any free software that you can use to setup filters on individual pcs? We are all using Windows 7 and wireless connections.
Kind regards

6 more repliesI have just upgraded a four year old PC with a new mother board, procesor and memory and reinstalled Windows98SE with all upgrades fixes etc before MS withdraws support. Also I have installed BT Internet Broadband and that works real fine.Everything is exactly as before and all reinstalled software is working as it should do. The only problem I have is with downloading McAfee Vius Scan and Personal Firewall as a redownload from my subscription account. Neither programme will download and both tell me to reset my Active X controls. These are set up exactly as they were before and exactly as recommended be McAfee. This makes no difference and nowhere in McAfee Technical Support can I find a follow on solution if resetting Active X does not work. I have also searched this forum and cannot find or have missed another solution. The only solution I have at the moment is to junk my McAfee subscription and go elsewhere for the Firewall unless anyone can advise further.
I don't know if McAfee downloads will work with Firefox browser click hereIt might be worth a try..I found IE was very fussy about some downloads...even though all the settings were supposedly correct.

My friend has a notebook computer with Windows XP and 128MB RAM but the McAfee software lists 256MB RAM under system requirements. Will this software run on her computer?
128MB isn't really enough to run XP comfortably, the McAfee software on top, if it installed,
would probably bring the system to it's knees.
McAfee trial subscription has expired. Mcafee tech said too much spam is on the computer to put on old subscription. He said it would cost $250 to remove and process. Is there a way HP can do it for free as a way around it?

My Dell laptop came loaded with McAfee Personal Firewall. After uninstalling, Vista Security Center is still showing it as installed and on in addition to Norton 360 which I installed. How can I get Vista to recognize that McAfee Firewall is not on?
Hi John and Welcome to VistaX64.com!

You may not have removed MaAfee completely from your system and when trying to reinstall they are conflicting with each other.
Remove all reference to MaAfee and reinstall..
Not a bad idea to stay away from Norton.
background ~ computer was "dumped" and restored to factory state. McAfee came preinstalled I uninstalled it using Add/Remove programs. (btw this is computer #2 XP pro sp2 OS mainly firefox but for kids it will be SBC browser due to parental control).
problem ~ in the system tray the McAfee Active Shield still displays. How do I get this gone from the system tray?? If I click on it it brings up for me to select how I want this to scan my computer and to set up a time for automatic updates. Yet McAfee is no longer in my Add/Remove programs or in my programs.
Solution??? ~

Use the mcafee uninstaller found at this location on MajorGeeks this will remove all traces of mcafee.
I subscribed to McAfee Clinic a few weeks ago and with it you have to install Active Shield. It worked great until the first time I was notified of an update. When I went to update it a window popped up saying that there was an error in it or that it was installed improperly. So I uninstalled it and downloaded it again. This has been done several times -- uninstalling and downloading -- but each time the same window pops up. I have sent two e-mails to McAfee and have had no response from them.
Can anyone help with this problem? If not, I guess it's back to InoculateIt.
TIA,
TXRosebud
I'll be honest with you. I really don't like or suggest McAfee to anyone. You may also find now that it's a pain in the butt to uninstall. If you want a good reliable AV then I highly suggest <a href=http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin/> PC-Cillin</a> by TrendMicro. It's easy to use and keep updated. McAfee AV if it's not causing problems now will definitely cause you problems down the road. It's real junk and McAfee is well known for bad updates that cause your PC to freeze and/or crash.

I have recently installed McAfee Viruscan 6.01 after using 5.21 for quite a while with no problems. With 6.01, I can't keep the download scan, internet filter, e-mail scan, and system scan active. Sometimes I turn on my computer and the V-shield is totally X'd out--nothing running. Other times, just system scan runs and the others are not. I've tried everything I can think of. I'm running Me on a 950 mhz/AMD Athlon/256 MB. Any suggestions are appreciated. Birdiemaker

12 more repliesI have McAfee on my computer it's a free part of my Comcast package. The last few days I keep seeing an icon in my system tray telling me I'm not protected. When I click the icon it launches the McAfee program and the Home Screen shows that "Computer & Files" is unprotected. I click on the Fix button and it once again tells me I'm protected, but it changes to unprotected after some time.
When I click on the CONFIGURE button, I see the only toggle that keeps switching is the "SystemGuard" protection. Every time I switch it on, it tells me I am protected, but when the error occurs it's the SystemGuard toggle that is switched to off. I'm not sure if the two problems are related or if there's any risk by not having the SystemGuard enabled. It does concern me that I keep getting the warning icon in the system tray. This problem just started a couple of days ago.
I appreciate any insight on how to proceed.
Thank you!
Is there a way to manually remove McAfee 'Total Protection' program other then using the 'add and remove' program or using Start, all programs and clicking on McAfee , uninstall.

2 more repliesHiA friend has asked me to sort out his laptop with regards to security. He is receiving a msg from mcafee - which appears to be indicating he had a 60 day trial (how can i check this?). When i follow instructions it is taking us on to the next step and asking us to log in - his tiscali email addy is not recognised - so im assuming he has not registered - and it is simply now asking us to register and sign up and pay!?I tried to install AVG Free. AVG recognised that there was another protection programme and advised i uninstall it. (this is the point i backed out and thought i would seek advice!)I have AVG Free, AD Watch 2007 and SUPER Anti Spyware free addition.Should i uninstall his mcafee and install the 3 above apps?I am keen to help this guy as he has sorted my car for me! but i dont have the know how and i dont want to mess up his laptop, or leave him unprotected. All advice greatly appreciated. Thanks very much!
Assumming VistaThen the windows firewall is good enoughAntivirus AVG or Avast (Avast seems to give less problems)Super Antispyware is a good enough to back up Defender which is built into windows vista and will realtime scan for spyware.Add SpywareBlaster as a blocker and something to filter the spam and he will be well protected. The only problem is getting him to remember to update his protection on a regular basis.Although Defender and Avast will do it automatically.

Hi ~~ I may be eating my words as I once said I LOVED McAfee! Now I'm having probs. I contacted McAfee's support - you guys are quicker in replies so I thought I'd check here, too. Any way AROUND uninstalling McAfee Active Shield? Here's what I wrote to their support:
I am having problems with Active Shield. My taskbar shows the red M and when I right-click, then choose Active Shield, the only option I get is "Run". When I click Run, it tells me that there was a problem starting the program, to reinstall Active Shield. When I close that window, I have a window that reads "Active Shield is now protecting your PC from viruses!" I have tried numerous times to reinstall Active Shield. When I choose Add/Remove programs, the only option I have listed is McAfee VirusScan and when I try to remove that it gives me an error saying the Network connection from which I installed it is unavailabe. McAfee Active Shield is NOT listed in my Add/Remove programs box. When I try updating Active Shield, it tells me it is up to date. HELP! I am afraid my system is NOT being protected as it should.
Any advice is appreciated! Thanks.

That's good to hear, McAfee can sometimes be stubborn to uninstall.
But now that you've gotten rid of Virus Scan, make sure you replace it with some other virus scanning software. You might want to get either AVG or Avast! (both freeware) to replace McAfee and maybe ZoneAlarm if you also got rid of the McAfee firewall.

Is it good to be running the APS or is it only needed if I ever drop the computer? Why are there two different beeps, one is louder and longer, the other short and quiet.......... whats the difference between them? Its weird because I only had one of the beeps for about a month and a half. And can I run APS but turn off the beep (dont recall seeing an option for this)? It beeps a LOT on the less sensitive setting even.. even being gentle picking it up...
The APS parks your hdd head when you accidentally drop it, while the resting hdd can usually take 240 to 400 g shock, a working hdd with the head assembly reading the platter usually can take 50 g, which is equivalent to 1 m fall. However, it depends on the angle of drop so a failure of the hdd is possible even you drop it at 20 cm. The head assembly is only around 0.1 mm from the platter, and any scratches to the platter will cause irreversible damages to the data. Regarding the beep, i am not so sure.

You have two accelerometers now! Your ThinkPad has one (Active Protection), and so does your new hard drive (Seagate G-Force). I don't have personal experience with this, but it's possible the Seagate G-Force software disabled Active Protection. You may be able to re-enable it and run both in parallel. I have no idea how they interact. Either one should be sufficient to protect the drive. Perhaps someone with experience could chime in?

Hi Ellen and welcome to the forum, You can find the 32 bit version for Windows 7 here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-53150 You could also download and install Lenovo System Update:http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-73695.html System Update will check for new drivers and software from Lenovo for your computer and give you a list where you can choose what you want to download and install and it will be installed for you without having to download and install each one of then manually. It should also give you the option to download and install Active Protection System. It's also a nice tool to check for new versions of the drivers and Lenovo software for your computer. -gan

I have "McAfee Security Scan Plus" as my computer protection....it came with my new computer a few months ago. But it is going to expire on June 27th and I've been doing so many Google searches on free ware and other computer protection, searching reviews on about everything out there, and I am VERY confused. I have NO idea what to get. Some sites say I need several things....firewall, anti-virus software, internet protection software (free downloads), etc. I've looked at reviews on McAfee and Norton....many say neither is good. I have a Norton package I can install, but it sort of 'took over' my computer in the past and don't trust it. McAfee didn't have good reviews either and it costs over $40 to buy it after it expires. I emailed a friend who builds computers and he said he uses "Trend Micro". I found it on amazon.com and it's reasonable....I can afford it....but there are some bad reviews on this too (along with a lot of good ones) and I'm just at a loss as to what I need to replace the McAfee.
Also....when I DO get something else, do I need to go everyplace on my computer, including my registry (regedit) and get everything associated with McAfee off before installing something else?
Please advise me on what I should use or get without having to forgo eating next month to get it. I'm on a VERY tight budget and also don't want to mess up my new computer with something not good to use. VERY confusing o... Read more
After years of using Mcafee Virus protection and Firewall on my PC with WIndows Me OS, I upgraded to McAfee Total Protection. Everything still seemed to run fine until I needed to investigate a problem and ran into issues that required contact with Macafee via on-line chat. They advised that the latest version of Virusscan in Toal Protection is not compatible with WIndows Me, despit ethe fact that it has been running happily for months, but could not or would not advise the date at whcih compatibility became an issue. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't know whether to continue or to buy a different protection package.

2 more repliesIn another forum, it has been requested that I run ComboFix which of course requires all AV products to be disabled.
I had McAfee Total Protection installed but it lapsed due to the contract expiring while the PC was totally out and payment not being made.. I can open it but every function is greyed out so I cannot make changes.
I continually get pop ups reminding me that there is no coverage until payment is made; I assumed that meant that it is disabled.
When I ran combofix, it said that McAfee AV and McAfee anti spyware are running but combofix will continue although the results will not be reliable.
Is there another way to "disable" McAfee? Stopping processes? Stopping services?
Thanks for any assistance.

There isn't any obvious changes to the UI but I will sure to evaluate it on a virtual system.
As often as I try to install it keeps saying it can't do it, and asks if I have JavaScript installed and working. I've had McAfee for years, but lately have not been able to get it to come up for a scan. It kept saying it couldn't do it and to try later. Also I resubscribed for a couple of more years as per a promotion. The letter I got said I should verify my subscription. I could not get it to do this. It kept saying that I should try later. So I went online to see what I might do and found instructions to remove all McAfee from my computer and reinstall. I removed it and now I can't get it to reinstall.
Truthfully, McAfee isn't a good antivirus software. You can get free programs that perform better than McAfee. You could try Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira Free Antivirus, Avast, and other programs.
2 more repliesHello Forum: Top Choice site rates BitDefender anti-virus tool as best on market. Rates McAfee as 3rd. Anybody have it? Is it better? . If so I am not renewing McAfee. If I can get better protection for a better price I will switch. Also,McAfee constantly annoys with renewal reminders for their Firewall which I do not have. I am using Windows Firewall. The reviewer says that McAfee does not protect the registry and that BitDefender does. My McAfee subscription runs out in 2 months. Any advice would be appreciated. I am using Windows XP. , IE6.0, Dell Dimension with NetZero dialup. Thank You!
AVG and Avast are both fine products and both offer a free version.I run AVG.patio.
5 more repliesI am working on a computer. It has Aol. I called Aol and they said I need to update my virus protection but when i get on the internet to download the update files its says my computer is out of memory. I have memory left so this couldnt be the problem. I used another Isp and i get the same problem. why is this?
1. How much hard drive space do you have left?
2. delete some of the tmp files on your hard drive.
what _exactly_ is the message you receive?
Anyone else out there with this problem? Every time it updates, mcafee virus protection turns itself off. Looking for a solution.
Howdy Clyde,
Does it do it as a restart to make the updates take effect? My Zone Alarm Security Suite does that every so often but prompts me for a restart when necessary, not every update. Matbe you need a different AV? AVG is a good free one.Don't run two at the same time though, will you!!

is anybody running McAfee with their windows 10 beta ???
are they having any problems with Mcafee running on it ???
with the live tiles does McAfee run / look different than what we see in Windows 7 ???
do we get the software from the microsoft app store or still from McAfee direct ???
thanks James
I have neither McAfee or Windows 10. But, it seems that McAfee has a page addressing your issue.
http://service-home.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS102278
Installation is very quick and easy.
Taking up to 35-40 MB RAM when idle.
Quick scan nearly takes 5 mins.
Firewall is easily configurable.
Interface is very simple. I guess its because its a beta version. Mcafee total protection 2009 has a different GUI altogether.
Will check on the detections and heuristics later.
Overall a very nice product. But can slow down old computers.
Nevertheless, if you've got 4 GB RAM, would you mind giving 40-50 MB towards security?
Dinesh.
Hi, i was wondering if someone could tell me something for this mcafee security pack?!I installed it a couple of days ago and...well i have my doubts! The program i was using before was Avira Premium Security Suite! Is my new pack good? What do you think? If not what would you recommend?
I have McAfee all Protection running but when it sees files it does not trust it automatically puts them in the quaranteen. Problem is I know that I trust this file, after I go to quaranteen and click restore , McAffee 2 minutes later puts it back in quarateen. How can I stop this from happening ?I can not find any optional settings to change this, please help.why are we not getting email notifications anymore after the upgrade ?
There should be an option to exclude files from being scanned, but are you sure they aren't disguised viruses? Also, you can find a better antivirus suite than McAfee for free. Try Avira Antivirus or Microsoft Security Essentials. You've been helped by a 15 year old.

Came home today and opened my laptop. Found that my homepage opened very slowly. Tried to enter another site and found that it would not open. Tried another then a third - same results. Glanced down at the bottom right of the screen and noticed that my McAfee shield was gone. Looked for it - nowhere to be found.
Went in through startup and found it that way. Ran a scan - but found nothing. Still Real-time Scanning not working. Tried to turn it on - it immediately kicked off. Tried again - kicked off again. Still have time remaining on my subscription.
Deleted browsing history also.
Have now opened up into safe mode and contacting you that way. Thanks.
Hello,
I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you.
Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us
Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs, unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

I realise that many will advise to go for free products such as AVG etc. But if a choice is to be made between the above 2 what would people advise? I have read so many conflicting opinions on various sites that it is hard to know where the truth lies! Also is it worth investing in the Norton Systemworks package with its array of utilities or am I better of using the basic tools built into XP?
Of the two Norton gets by far the most PCA forum postings from people who have problems with it. As to the utilities, OK but probably not neccessary.
10 more repliesI subscribe to Panda Active Scan Pro I use it as a back up to my anti-virus software I already have (Norton Internet Security). I recently downloaded McAfee 's site advisor which I found to be very helpful in avoiding bad sites. But when I came to use Panda Active Scan I couldn't use it, when I entered my Username and password instead of the usual pop-up window opening nothing happened. I eventually discovered through trial and Error that it was the McAfee site advisor that was somehow interfering with the Panda Scan. I disabled the helper in Internet Options>Programs>Manage Add-ons. Now I am having Problems Re-enabling McAfee site Advisor, I have re-anbled the add-on but it is not showing on the tool bar in IE. Can somebody please Help
I am sorry Ignore the last post I figured it out! Duh! I just right clicked the toolbar then a list dropped down with ticks by them and Site Advisor didn't have a tick by it so I Highlighted it and Hey Presto! Site Advisor Re-appeared in the tool bar. I am Sorry If I wasted anybody's time.

Hello I'm planning to buy a new and larger harddrive (500GB) for my x61 tablet. My Question is: Does the Active Protection System (APS) work with any Harddrive which is able to park heads? In asking because I'm not sure, if the thinkPad recognizes movements with a built in g-sensor inside the laptop (not in the harddrive) or a sensor inside of the harddrive (someone told me, that some drives have a g-sensor built in which APS is using)Can I change the harddrive and APS still works ?? Is there something to think of when changing the harddrive (except copying the system ;-)) Thanks for your helpDitschi
Check the manufacturer's hard drive specifications/data sheet for the support of IDLE IMMEDIATE ATA command which the Active Protection System uses to park the drive head without flushing the cache when the APS is engaged. More information @ http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Active_Protection_System I am personally using a WD scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 RPM drive with free fall sensor which appears to support this feature (I can hear the drive head parking when the APS is engaged and all read/writes are halted). Hope that helps.
4 more repliesDo you recommend joining or not joining the Microsoft Active Protection Service, and why?
I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and in setting it up it makes an offer to join.
I do because their (AV providers) security will improve as samples of user encountered malware are sent back to them. Symantec and many other AV vendors have the same feature... Any reputation-based AV must develop the "reputation" of the file(s) somehow...

More repliesHey, I got this problem. I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 64-bit on Thinkpad Edge 15 and I downloaded this great tool Active Protection System, which worked perfectly on my Windows 7 before. When I open up the program and shake my laptop it shows that shock is detected and shows that harddrive is stopped and while watching a movie the picture doesn't freeze, which means it isn't stopped. The sensitivity is set high and I disabled "Apatively ignore frequnet shocks". Is this a common problem for Win 8.1 or do I have to install something more?
This is probably about the driver but I can find it.
2 more repliesHello! I?m hoping that someone here can answer this question ? is APS running all the time, even if the laptop is at a Windows login box with the lid closed? I work as a tech at a K-12 school district. In our JH/HS building, we have 18 Bretford carts with 14 Thinkpad laptops on each (a mix of R61 and R400 machines, all running APS). Once the laptops are started each day, the teachers want to have students log off instead of shut down before placing them back in the cart and taking the cart to its next assigned classroom. The classrooms in this building have a ½? lip at the doorway that cart has to traverse when going in and out. Of course, the teachers have the students take the carts to their next location instead of doing it themselves, so the carts tend to get rough treatment especially when negotiating that doorway lip. I'm not aware that logging off and closing the lid will park the hard drive head. If APS isn?t running all the time the laptop is turned on, then there is potential for hard drive head damage during transport, and we would insist that the laptops be shut down for transport to their next destination. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
APS is NOT running as a service.
The Startup will be found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and will be executed after login.

4 more repliesSo I have taken to watching videos on the bus with my Z60m now, the only issue is that it seems the active shock protection program is kicking in way too much and just ruining my enjoyment. I turned it to low sensitivity and flicked on the check box for "I ride the bus" and it seemed to help a bit, but only by about 50%. My question is thus: If I just turn it off completely, is the HD inside going to be damaged? Is this program just extra insureance and not needed for normal things? I would not mind a bit of insight as to someone one who may have turned it off for a road trip or something.... Thanks !

It does. It even protects an HDD connected via eSATA.

Hi,After reading your other topic; I think you are probably fine and this is simply a problem with your anti-virus not communicating with Windows correctly. You can try setting your Windows Security Center service to automatic and this may fix your problem.Start > type services.msc > find the service Security Center > right click > Properties > change the start-up type to AutomaticReboot. I don't want email, boot sector, memory, etc protection.
I just want a scanner that runs when I tell it to and closes when I'm done.
They don't seem to make anti-virus software like this anymore. Every app I've come across has been loaded with garbage that clogs up your system. You can't even terminate most of these apps without uninstalling them. Not even AdAware works the way it used to.
I've tried AVG, Avast, Norton, NOD32, Kaspersky, and others whose names I've forgotten.
I use Anti-Malware now but that's it. I'm looking for a bona-fide virus scanner of the same sort, but maybe there aren't any?

4 more repliesI'm always weary about third-party software and things extra to windows...specially programs that start themselves during windows boot. So I'm wondering about ThinkVantage Active Protection System...do I really need it on my T440s? I've read it acts like an airbag to protect the HDD incase I drop or bump my machine. but what If its always sitting on my desk and I never drop it or bump it...then do I still need to have it installed?
Solved!

As long as your machine is runing a conventional hard drive and not a n SSD, I'd keep the APS installed. If you feel that it interferes with the operation of HDD, you can change the settings and make it less sensitive.

In the last 12 to 14 days, I have been experiencing an intermittent problem when I attempt to check my email with Incredimail. Incredimail is set to check my email hosted by my ISP first then any other accounts. Periodically, when I check my mail I get a message stating : Failed to connect to the Incoming Server "mail.xxxxxxxx.com (x's being the ISP name). Please try again later. Then below that, there is a small box which states : ERR: Intrusion Protection active for XXX.XXX.X.XX (the x's being my IP address)
I will get this message for most of the evening. However, the next morning, everything will be fine until later in the evening when this all starts again.
I run Avast free and it is active and updated. Superantispyware updated as well as Malwarebytes updated. I ran all three yesterday with expected results (no virus, spyware or malware). I suspended all antivirus, spyware and malware programs and tried to log into my e... Read more
Ok Admin guru's, im gonna pick your brain and expertise. I work for a local IT firm and alot of our clients are small based businesses and a lot of single customers who simply don't the brain power, time or ability to use indepth spyware removal tools and cleaners other then SpyBot and Adaware.
Those work great, WHEN UPDATED AND USED but my company is really looking for an "invisible" solution to where it will sit byitself, keep most of the basic spyware junk out of a machine, update it self with definitions and be intelligent enough to block bad things and allow good data to flow through without throwing up a damn window every single time asking the customer what to do!
We have been using SunBelts Counterspy as a single client and as a LAN based enterprise active protection on our network for the past few months but there is no way to tell it to shut the hell up. Every single freaking packet that passes through WAN connection it asks the client what to do with it. Hell, half the time I dunno what to do with it, so whats the average consumer going to do? I can't give a seminar to every fricking client on Do's and Don'ts, use Firefox, don't go to bad websites that look like 12 year olds built it, don't use P2P programs.
What have you guys been using/recommending to clients? I could really use some feedback as trying to "teach" people how to use the internet saftely isn't working, especially when it comes to ... Read more
Haven't used Sunbelts version..but most centrally managed packages allow you to create a custom configuration to push out to the clients, making it automatically perform actions based on what you say.
What antivirus are you using? I've seen my clients malware problems take a big drop since moving to NOD32 antivirus..since it's quite strong in ad/spyware detection. Kapersky is also very strong in this area.
Greetings,
I hate to join the forums and have my first post be under these circumstances but unfortunately a family member used my pc and got a virus on the pc called "McAfee Enhanced Protection Mode." I don't know much about it except it's blocking facebook and I cannot get rid of it....that said, how do I get rid of it?
Every time I try to install McAfee this error message keeps popping up in the middle of the install
@lilmisscrazy? I cannot quite make out the exact message. Perhaps the issue is due to another Security program already running on the system??If that is the case, disable / remove the conflicting Security program. Nonetheless, the apparent fix is to use McAfee support and tools to fix the problem. Found this:McAfee Consumer Support Center Be careful of this one -- READ the details before you consider yanking the product off the computer:How to uninstall McAfee Windows security software using the Consumer Products Removal tool When you see a Post that helps you,Inspires you, provides fresh insight,Or teaches you something new,Click the "Thumbs Up" on that Post. 1 more repliesmy hardrive is contiusly in use by the file mcnasvc.exe and/or mcmscsvc.exe which makes the PC run like crap. (this file has something to do with it, but i know its McAfee 2007)
when i disable it the pc runs great...
i'm told it shouldn't be disabled but i can't have it running i don't know if there is anybody else having this problem....
so i'm not sure what to do...
never had problems with 2006 mcafee....
mcnasvc.exe = McAfee Network Agent - required to run on startupmcmscsvc.exe = McAfee ServicesAlthough McAfee is as good as any other well known anti-virus program, it has become a resource hog that slows down your system especially if on dial-up or if installed on older systems without much RAM/slow CPU. McAfee requires numerous services and more than a dozen running files that use a lot of memory. Further McAfee products, like Symantec, are becoming difficult to remove. You may want to consider switching to another anti-virus program. See BC's Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps.
4 more repliesI am trying to remove McAfee Antivirus with MCPR ( McAfee Product Removal Tool ) by McAfee, But getting uninstallation incomplete message, I also done the full scan with Malwarebyte but there is no infection in scan.....But i still think there is a malware or adware which is creating a problem in my computer because when i start my google chrome i got lots of pop up windows....Please help

3 more repliesi have bought new acer chrome 13 ,can i download my bt mcafee security on to it,also sky go
McAffe has this for Chrome:http://home.mcafee.com/store/mcafee-livesafe Sky Go needs Silverlight Google's decision to restrict the chromebooks from running the silverlight plugin(and java plugin aswell) so untill they remove this restriction then Sky Go will never work on the chromebooks.
1 more repliesMy Dell computer came with McAfee Security Center on it - so I have been using that for the time being, but I wanted to know what peoples opinions were about the Norton program as well.
So far, I haven't been impressed with McAfee - but I'm not sure if Norton would be much better. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
For the Paid I prefer Norton - But for a good free one

Since I don't know what the problem is, I'm not sure where to post this...
I uninstalled McAfee Total Protection on my desktop and laptop because, while both were protected by McAfee, neither would "trust" the other on my home network. The reinstall on my laptop is working fine. The desktop is the problem.
A McAfee tier II tech took control of my desktop for over two hours, to no avail. He said the problem must be one or more Windows XP corrupt or missing files. He went though my registry and deleted all entries mentioning McAfee before his last reinstall attempt.
Via Microsoft's website, I confirmed my XP files contain all the latest updates.
Here's what else I've run:
chkdsk
sfc /scannow
Spybot S&D
Malwarebytes
McAfee's Virtual Technician, Preinstall, MGPR and Security Scan Plus programs
ParetoLogic's PC Health Advisor
I did discover and have eliminated about six bogus network adaptors (all with McAfee in the desriptors). They disappeared when I updated the drivers from a pop-up menu, which looked to be from McAfee. I am puzzled about this but don't know if it's relevant.
I really do want to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling Windows XP if at all possible.
Suggestions?
Thanks.
Ron H
I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but in my opinion (and the opinions of most knowledgeable folks), McAfee makes the absolute worst products you can use. Personally I'd install ANY other product.
13 more repliesIt worked fine a few hours ago, then it updated and now McAfee won't run real time protection.
If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.
