Avast 4.2 - Error in detection in .VHD file

Question: Avast 4.2 - Error in detection in .VHD file

Hi all

I've been testing AVAST 4.2 fairly rigorously on both VISTA X-64 and W7 7100 X-64.

Straight from the MS site I downloaded the .VHD Virtual disks (XP compatability mode)

AVAST reports that the .VHD file contains a "COMPRESSION BOMB". Now this doesn't actually tell me what this is -- but the fact that it reports something with the word BOMB in it means it can't be good.

Now as this VHD file was downloaded from the official Microsoft site I assume it HAS to be OK (or does it - I would imagine MS regularly checks its own websites - there's plenty of people out there who'd jump at a chance of attacking a MS site if they could).

I'm going to download the XP compatability mode again and have another scan.

VISTA again reports the file as CLEAN) so I think there still might be a couple of things AVAST need to fix in W7 when reading compressed or "archive" type files.

I can't post the screenshot -- once I see something with the word "BOMB" in it I immediately WIPE the entire machine. Schnell Fast, Pronto.

Cheers
jimbo

Preferred Solution: Avast 4.2 - Error in detection in .VHD file

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Avast 4.2 - Error in detection in .VHD file

The Avast forum reports this: A decompression bomb is a file that unpacks to an enormous amount of data - thus "flooding" the unpacking engine. It's quite hard to detect such files reliably, so it's possible that it gives some false alarms ocassionally.

The entire forum is here,
Hope this helps..

Update: SecureAPlus test is below.

Since the "professional" (bought and certainly unbiased, nudge nudge, wink wink) AV testers don't test Comodo or Qihoo at present, I had to.

Link as to not cross-post: http://malwaretips.com/threads/is-it-safe-to-use-360-ts-or-or-other-360s-products.46792/#post-398096

TL;DR: Avast left 29 threats; Comodo, 32; Qihoo, 4

Question: is there a Win10 version of 360 Essentials?

Answer:Quick File-Detection Test: Qihoo vs Avast vs Comodo

Yes. There is a version for Windoes 10 Technical Preview. Download here : http://free.360totalsecurity.com/totalsecurity/360TS_Setup_For_Win10_TP_6.8.0.6012.exe

Hiya,

While Scanning with Avast 4.8 Free, I noticed a *.Rar file had a hidden EXE in it. Avast didn't detect anything, neither did Malware Bytes, or Outpost Spyware, etc.

The main problem, is I normally use the Explorer Shell extension on Avast, scanned the file, but it does not list anywhere, on logs etc, what the actual scanned files are? I checked the box, so after it scans shows me total megs scanned, then no threat etc, but doesn't show what files were scanned. The only reason I saw an Exe there, is because it hung a little while scanning, and I saw, a copy of the file name as an EXE. Most likely a virus, but I am very annoyed, I can't slowly see and check the contents of RAR's or Zips under avast. It is only logging if theres a virus, but I know for sure theres an EXE in the Rar file, but Avast says there no virus and thus no log, all my other security programs also aren't going off, no connections on the firewall, nothing strange, except the seemingly EXE file in there.

From what I briefly saw in the file, it was something like True.Crypt, and the file name.exe, some sort of directory like that. If its in a RAR file is that normal?

Also is there a way to manually view all contents in a RAR file without opening it, I use WinRar? Can I see what Avast actually scanned?

Thanks!

ps. I did not open the file, simply scanned it.

Answer:Urgent Avast Security Help Needed, Found Suspicious file, but no detection

A rar functions similarly to a zip file. Do you know where it came from? Did you download software from somewhere in an rar package form.

You could try submitting it to Virustotal and seeing what you get back. It may not scan all the files in a rar if there are a lot. http://www.virustotal.com/

For the record though, rar file with exe inside is not an indication of a virus. Maybe its just TrueCrypt in a rar file. Depending on the location of the file, you should have a pretty good idea where it came from. ("Did I download this to my desktop")

Hi.  I use Avast antivirus software on my Windows 7 desktop computer.  Today, I did a scan and it said that a threat had been detected.  It identified the file as softonicdownloader44840.exe, and it said the "Severity" was high and listed the Status as "Threat: Win32: Adware-gen [Adw]".  (I'm not sure what these classifications mean exactly, but I'm listing them to be thorough).  I chose to apply automatic fix and it said that it had been successfully moved to the Chest.

After doing this, I was curious about what this might be and googled softonicdownloader44840.exe.  I got all kinds of conflicting information, including one site that said this is an important file for certain functions on the computer.  I'm confused and don't want to trust random sites, so I'm hoping this forum can please assist me.  So far, I have not noticed any problems, but I want to check if I did something wrong by "fixing" this situation.

Does anyone know about this?  Thank you very much in advance if you can assist!

Christopher

Answer:Avast detection of softonicdownloader44840.exe?

This is the Download Manager that bundles the original software from the Softonic.com web site along with additional offers, mostly ad-supported browser extensions and utilities. The bundled software (which is actually not included in this file but downloaded) is most likely clean, the downloader is ad-supported. The application softonicdownloader44840.exe by Softonic International has been detected as PUP.Softonic.Bundler. The program is a setup application that uses the Softonic Downloader installer.Analysis of softonicdownloader44840.exe

The detection is more accurately classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP)....which is defined somewhat differently by various security vendors and may or may not be detected/removed based on that definition[/b]. That fact adds to confusion and a lot of complaints from end users asking why a detection was not made on a particular file (program) they are having issues with.Malwarebytes: What are the 'PUP' detections, are they threats and should they be deleted?Sophos: Potentially unwanted applicationsBitdefender: What is a PUA/PUP software?Eset: What is a potentially unwanted application or potentially unwanted content? How Microsoft antimalware products identify potentially unwanted softwareLavasoft: What are Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPS)?McAfee White Paper: Potentially Unwanted ProgramsAVG FAQ 2340: Potentially Unwanted ProgramsSymantec: Potentially Unwanted ProgramsTo learn more about PUPs and how you get them, please rea... Hello,

I've seen in Avast and in most guides that people change the heuristics sensitivity from Low to Normal or even High. My question is: did anyone see a heuristic detection ? I've tested Avast so many times but I never seen a "Heur" detection. Does changing the heuristics sensitivity improve detection ?

I did a test a few days ago (184 GB samples) and most files where detected by "EVO-Gen, DRep and Malware-Gen" and I've set heuristics sensitivity to High (even with Normal I didn't see any improvements) and I didn't see any "Heur" detection.

I have yet another antivirus question as I still haven't decided what antivirus I'm going to install. I was pretty set on Avast until I saw on a few websites that Avira AntiVir has better virus detection than avast as well as less of an impact on system performance. Does anyone out there know if this is actually the case? I would like to go for the most secure option with the least impact on the system. Thank you for any help!

Answer:Avira AntiVir better virus detection than Avast?

Yes. The information is right. Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic has far higher detection rates than Avast. Also, it is very light on system resources. You can take this for sure. You will never regret your decision of installing Avira Antivir PersonalEdition Classic. Here are two links to support my statement.

Hi all,Yesterday Avast popped up to warn that svchost.exe was some kind of trojan or virus. So I clicked the option to delete the files and moved on. Later I restarted the pc and my new windows xp prof install was damaged: no avast nor ad aware icons in the sys tray. No network connections: no internet browsing. The network connections list is empty. So I started the pc with a win vista install on another disk. The avast scan found:25/07/2009 2:04:57 1964 Sign of "Win32:Bifrose-EGW [Trj]" has been found in "D:\WINDOWS\Installer\af3198.msp" file. After the cleaning I tried to run Malwarebytes AM on the xp install to see if it would pick up any virus that may have re-activated but now got a Runtime Error 372"Failed to Load Control 'VbalGrid' from vbalsgrid.ocx. Answer:no network connections and no avast after virus detection

Update for 26/07/2009>Basically I believe what should be done is to let all necessary services -that no longer start up - start up at boot and repair missing dependencies which aren?t solved by the started services. <Actions performed the last 24 hours:The Avast and MBAM scans have scanned and cleaned my disks. In the Avast log I found ?win32:rootkit-gen found in svchost.exe?, thus it was deleted as I had confirmed the ?delete tread?? of the Avast pop up. After reboot this must have been causing several problems like services that no longer start up at boot and missing dependencies. Indeed there was no longer svchost.exe in \\ windows\system32 , so I copied it back. Unfortunately this sole action doesn?t make my pc work normally. So I think disabled services like the RPC must get working again. I tried c:\\windows\system32\svchost ?k rpcss, which started svchost and the process appeared in the task manager for 10 seconds, and then it disappeared. In order the try regain network functionality I registered some dll successfully. regsvr32 netcfgx.dll regsvr32 netshell.dllregsvr32 netman.dllBut network connections list is still empty.Hello b0gb0g,We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. This morning decided to do a computer spring clean. Doing a scan using Ad-Aware SE, Avast kicked in stating that there was a virus present. Followed the Avast instructions and dealt with the warning!.Avast is running all the time, and is updated automatically, so I assume that everything is running to plan. Question: How did Avast miss this virus (if there was one), as no previous warning had been given. The computer was connected to the internet at that time, so the virus had not just crept into the system. Should I have doubts about the effective detection rate of Avast!.

Answer:Avast anti-virus detection failure!!

Correction: The computer 'was not' connected to the internet at the time.

Hi,

Some time ago, Avast started to show the following message after every single scan (Win7 64 bit):
"Some files could not be scanned"
In the "Warnings" section, it shows this:
"C:\Windows\winstart.bat                  Error: File is offline - it is currently not available.(42006)"

When I look at winstart.bat, I see that it was modified recently. The file size is 1KB, but when I edit this file with notepad, it seems to be empty.
Is my computer infected? I read on different sites that winstart.bat could be related to some spywares.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Avast: C:\Windows\winstart.bat - Error: File is offline

The error message you received is common among avast! users. When doing a Google Search for Avast C:\Windows\winstart.bat file is offline, it appears that avast is the only security vendor providing that message and has been doing so for several years.Winstart.bat is a batch File (text file) which contains commands that can be used to run other processes or tasks when you execute it and is usually located in the C:\Windows folder. Winstart.bat was used on older Windows Operating Systems like Windows 95, 98 and ME and was executed every time Windows starts just like AUTOEXEC.BAT as described here. Winstart.bat was also used to load memory-resident utilities in Windows applications in order to run DOS applications under Microsoft Windows version 3.00 as described in Microsoft Article ID: 69186 but in could be misused for malicious purposes. This file can be opened in Notepad for inspection of its contents by right-clicking on it and choosing edit...and any text line can be suspended by typing REM followed by a space in front of the line. I have read the file is sometimes used to speed up the boot process so its not required and can be removed. However, if left on the machine, some anti-virus programs may detect it as the file is not able to be scanned properly.Virus Total report on winstart.bat as of 2010.04.30 <- no anti-virus vendor detected it as a threat to include avast. The fact that the file is unavailable doe not mean it is malware, as the above analysis appears to con... I am having a problem in my sister's laptop. She does have antivirus installed (AVG Internet Security). However, its license expired, so I downgraded it to free version. After, downgrading it, I installed Avast! as it's antivirus and decided to uninstall AVG. Then, a few minutes ago after rebooting the laptop, a window opened saying that Trojan is infecting my computer, I heal it.. Then, another pops out. Heal and heal and heal..

After doing it, I rebooted the laptop thinking that it will refresh the system. Unfortunately, after rebooting, I cannot connect to Internet now. :cry :cry :cry Help me please? I already performed the Malware removing however, it did not help the laptop. I attached the files you asked me.. Please, help please? Thank you!

Question: File Detection?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section - don't often post on forums.

I currently use SyncBackPro as a backup tool for all of my files across the home network, but I would love to have a piece of software or even a command that will work as follows:

1. Detects a file has been created in a folder
2: Moves file to new subfolder with timestamp or predefined name

Does anyone know if this is a possibility?

Answer:File Detection?

FolderChangesView can monitor changes, but since you need some actions, try DropIt, Folder Agent or File Juggler.

When I try to boot my W520, I get a BIOS boot up error : "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". I am using PNY XLR8 240GB SSD. It worked fine for a month. I also have PGP installed and whole disc encrypted. I installed an update of Intel Management Engine Firmware and Intel Chipset, both are the latest from lenovo site because I was experiencing expreme slowness from my harddrive. Programs would freeze. Webpages would take forever to load..The next time I rebooted, I got the error. If I leave the SSD out for a bit, and put the SSD back in, the disk will work for some time... but on next reboot, it is again detection error.. TRIM is enabled on my system. I am not sure how the SSD died so quickly. I am back to using my HDD but I am not happy. I want a solution... is this a intel chipset issue? Intel IMEI issue? Is  the PNY SSD just a bad model? I've googled plenty and dont really see a solution. Sometimes there is a firmware update.. PNY has no firmware updates for my drive.. I don't see anybody else using PNY on their W520, but plenty of people are experiencing Error 2100 with SSD on their W520.. somethings fishy.. help please! thanks in advance !

Answer:W520: PNY XLR8 240GB SSD with error "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"

Hello,
I don't have a ThinkPad W520 or a PNY SSD, but could it be simply that the SSD is coming loose inside the ThinkPad's chassis?  I suppose this could occur if a 7mm high SSD was inserted into a 9.5mm high 2.5" drive bay with a ~2mm spacer to "pad" the unused vertical space.

I've had my T430 for about a year, and other than two Corsair RAM sticks failing my computer has been running smoothly. Last night, my computer suddenly froze up and now it won't recognize my SSD. I'm currently using my stock HDD, but now I can't access any of the data on my SSD. I've tried running the SSD firmware update from the Lenovo site, but it wouldn't show my SSD under the memory devices (I'm not sure if this particular SSD is supported by the firmware update either). I don't think lenovo customer support would help in this situation, since my stock HDD runs fine and I didn't buy the SSD from them, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Error 2101 Detection error on HDD2 (mini sata) X220

HiIt seems newer drive is needed or its firmware. Chek out SSD manufacturer site for fw update.Since x220 BIOS 1.16 or something like this one, msata SSD error detection has disappeared. Except of rare cases with some Crucial (or Corsair, didn't remember) and Samsung drives. Also do not use OCZ drives.

Hallo, Since the past couple of days I am receiving this Error 2102: Detection error in HDD2 during every cold/warm boot. It pops up even after a complete powerdown for overnight and boot up the next day. Further, the boot itself has become very slow - shows blank screen until the Thinkpad logo is displayed, followed by which the error message pops up. Thanks in advance for pointers!!! P.S: I looked up in the community for similar errors - only couple found and no solutions.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thinkpad Edge E530 - i5-3210M -upgraded 8GB RAM - 750 GB, 16GB mSATA HDD Performance Booster

Answer:Edge e530 - Error 2102: Detection error in HDD2 - press escape to continue

That error is coming from BIOS, it means there is something wrong detecting the mSATA SSD.  It could point to a hardware problem.  It is definitely not a software problem.  I would call the support line in your country, and ask what they recommend about it.

Hello! First post on this forum but been browsing for some time. My machine: ThinkPad S430, type-model: 3364-5HG, Win 7 x64, 500 GB HGST HDD. My problem is notably similiar to this one: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504.The problem occurs on very irregular basis, at times a couple of times a day but other times it goes weeks between the interrupts. It starts with some sort of short mechanical sound from the HDD, similar to the one when you turn the laptop of by pressing and holding the power button (only do this if I absolutely have to, it feels like choking someone with a pillow). After the sound, the screen freezes for a couple of seconds before the short bluescreen mentioned in the link occurs. The rest is as follows by the link above. Basically the only difference is the HDD brand (HGST in my S430 and Samsung in the link). After reboot (with power button during the automated reboot after bluescreen when the error code occurs), the laptop works fine.  It's getting quite annoying when this happens and also the suspension of not knowing when it will happen next is not good for my heart. What to do? Thanks in advance! Regards,Nicholas

Hi, I have a month old T440s. It has the original 256GB SSD drive (didn't open\replace anything). After uninstalling some antivirus software win8 had problems booting. To make a long story short, I tried different things to fix the MBR and eventually got to the point of trying to do a full factory restore, which didn't work (it couldn't find the recovery partition). When I boot up now, I get the "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" error.Aside from trying to restore using Lenovo CD (shipped to me, will be here in a couple of days), what else cn be done and what caused this ordeal? I don't mind about the data on the SSD, I just really need my laptop functioning ASAP. Thanks for any advise you may have!

well i was re-installing winxp pro on my older computer, and everything was going fine until the point to where it is almost done installing (where it no longer gives you a timeline as to how long its going to take to install, but simply says finalizing installation) and thats when it just froze. i let it sit for a while hoping it would move on, but it didnt so i just reset the computer. when it started back up it said restarting installation, but when it actually got to the installation screen it said file 'asms' is needed on the cd, and to type the path, and click ok, and since i didnt know the path, i just clicked ok, but it doenst do anything. i tried the help off of the support.microsoft page but none of that helps, and i cant load the original cd that i burned it off because now my bios wont recognize any cd drive. i even tried to reset the bios to the default settings, but that didnt work either. i also tried connecting the hard drive to my newer comp, but it wont even recognize it except when i restart the comp and then it gives me a blue screen that says the comp stopped windows to prevent damage to my computer and that its beginning a physical memory dump. i also tried starting over on the old comp with another hard drive but it just tells me to reboot the computer and select a default boot device. what should i do?

oh and the older comp is a pentium 4 processor with a pentium motherboard, about 4 to 5 years old with the hyperthreading technology.

Hello:
I have DSL with ATT yahoo. And they provide McAffe antivirus free. About 5 days ago I saw a small square box with an exclamation mark - when clicking on it Mcaffe say “the dectecion signature file is between 8 and 29 days old. I hit fix-it button - no results. Have removed McAffe antivirus.
The problem is that I can’t go to any McAffe site. If I try I get a 400 or 403 http error - hence why mcaffe could not update. I can not go to Mcaffe to download Mcaffe antivirus. I assume I have a virus or any being hijacked.

Hello,I have a file without extension. I don't know how to open it. Is there a sofware which can recognize the kind of programme it is ?Thank a lot to those who can help me.Jean

Answer:file extension detection

First, make sure you aren't being stabbed with extension and file hiding. In Windows Explorer, View (98) or Tools (XP) menu has Folder options. In Folder Options, open the View tab, and scroll to the radio buttons and check boxes labelled 'Hide system files', 'Hide registered extensions', and 'Hide system folders'. You want the radio button checked that says 'Show all files' and the checkboxes that say 'Hide extensions' and 'Hide system folders' UNchecked, regardless of Billy Gates's 'recommendations'. Then apply your settings, and hit the button that says 'Apply settings to all Explorer windows' before closing the menu dialogue. Close and restart Windows Explorer to initialise the new settings. You should now see an extension on that file, if it has one.If it actually has no extension, you can try opening it with NotePad or another text edittor to avoid accidentally running something undesirable. If you don't have an up-to-date virus killer, get one. Grisoft AVG Free Edition is good. Scan the file before opening it.

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

Answer:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

I have an issue with a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch Windows 8. It has a 512GB SSD. (Believe its Samsung)  Earlier today the computer frooze while saying plug in your charger, so I had to hold down the power button to do a forced shutdown. Upon turning it back on I got this error after hanging on the Lenovo logo for a good five minutes. Error: 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2) The SSD is not visible anywhere not in BIOS or anywhere else. I've tried reseating it however it doesn't help. The BIOS is upto date, any I'm unable to update the SSD Firmware as I cannot get onto Windows as per the instrutions here - http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504 1. I cant update firmware for the SSD as I cant get onto Windows2. The BIOS firmware is the latest 3. I've taken the SSD out and put it back in4. Reset BIOS settings5. Disconnected Battery and left it for an hour I'm panicing as all my data is on there, I assumed it was safe as it's SSD.  Please can anyone assist?

Answer:X1 Carbon - SSD Failure? Error 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2)

Sorry for a 2500 GBP laptop I'd expect better really. This is the SECOND X1 Carbon I've had out of 4 to fail me with the SSD. I've lost all my data (Yes I know I should have backed it up) that I'll never be able to recover. Ultimately I've given up on the brand of Lenovo, my company who supplies exclusively Lenovo hardware to our customers are now switching to Dell as a direct result of the lack of support and poor hardware/firmware design. Just ordered 2X Dell XPS 13's as a replacement for my less than 6 month old Lenovo X1 Carbon, never thought it would come to this but the lack of support, knowledge and consitant hardware failures has left me no choice, I can't operate or do my work on an Lenovo X1 Carbon, fingers crossed the Dell will be better as it cant get any worse than Lenovo. To anyone who has Google'd the error and found this thread some cold facts; According to my resources this error can be caused if the system is not shutdown, BSOD or sudden power loss. If it doesn't resolve itself, there is a good chance it wont. Cycle the computer numrous times, let the battery run flat. Try it a few more times. Reset the BIOS, Update the BIOS. Prevention is better than cure, supposedly updating the SSD Firmware might have prevented this from happening in the first place.Lots of reports that this is an issue with BIOS and Firmware issues that result in an early death. I can confirm this having happened twice to me on different generation and model... Read more

Hello, for the past few days McAfee has detected and removed a Trojan ZapChast.reg from File Path C:/a.bat during XP startup. Immediately prior to the first detection a program winsock32.exe attempted to access the Internet and was blocked. Having followed through a number of threads I have a rough idea where to go with this one, however as most cases of ZapChast seem slightly different I would appreciate any help that could be given to ensure I remove this correctly. As per direction given in a previous thread I have included a copy of SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log and the latest HJT log run immediately after Startup. Thanks in advance.

I'm looking for a dupe-detect and delete program where I can say:

If there is a dupe file in Directory A and in Directory B, always (automatically) delete the file in directory B.
Or, if there is a dupe file in Directory A and any other directory, always delete the file in the "other" directory.

Does this program exist?

Answer:dupe file detection program that allows “priority” for keep/discard

So using Directory A as the master directory (source) and always preferring its copy over the duplicates it finds?

Most I can say is TeraCopy; I know you can tell it to automatically prefer to keep a specific copy but it's been a while since I used it.

On Friday, October 25, 2013, Kaspersky Lab has released anti-virus databases, which was mistakenly added detection system file tcpip.sys. This anti-virus databases detected as a malicious file tcpip.sys in Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations running under Windows 7 (32-bit), put the file in Quarantine and delete the registry keys that refer to the file.

Our specialist have created the article with solution for this issue.

False detection on file tcpip.sys at October 25, 2013
Additionally, we would like to advise that we have automated solutions for not yet rebooted (the network works) as well as for already rebooted machines (the network is not available).
Please send a private message to (KL CentralSupport user) in order to get this fix.

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience with the false positive detection of the tcpip.sys.

The computer has not been restarted, the network works:
Update anti-virus databases, make sure it is done and applied.
Run kaspersky_tcpip_fix.exe with administrator permissions.
Check if file tcpip.sys has been restored in folder C:\Windows\system32\drivers.
If file has not been restored, manually restore it from Quarantine.

I am a little confused about Panda, a lot of the time when running the malware packs here in this forum, Panda only detects around 50% of them, even when I'm SUD'ing them maybe (6) more a day get detected which is kinda confusing. I would say its because panda is just bad, but it gets high marks in a lot of the AV-Comparitive/AV-test tests. I have kind of come to a conclusion that pure cloud antivirus products just don't work as well as those products that have signatures on the computer for what ever reason, I know Webroot SecureAnywhere also is plagued with low scored in file detection. Is its just a cloud antivirus company being lazy thing? or is it something to do with how the cloud is run that gives them poor file detection. I am really curious.

Anyone have some insight?

Answer:Panda Internet Security 2014 (File Detection?)

The malware packs (mostly) contain zero-day malware, so a low detection rate in itself is not the mark of a bad product.

Keep on SUD'ing, this is what makes them better.

I have an emachines e520 laptop and am trying to go from Ubuntu to XP, however every time i try doing the install, it blue screens and gives me the "STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7AF4524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)" error.

I have downloaded the drivers and included them into the XP install disk. i made an iso file from the boot disk and then added the drivers to the ISO and then burned it back to a disk. And still no luck. I do press F6 but it still goes to expect it from a floppy drive, which the laptop does not have.

the HDD in the system is a sata drive and Sata mode is set to AHCI in the setup utility of the comptuer.

Help!

Hi, TTdeSouza

I did some quick research to see how others have gone about fixing this error. I found this thread here from a Lenovo employee on the same issue. According to the employee, someotherguy, the issue is indicative of a hardware fault. Due to this, I would recommend giving Lenovo Support a call at your earliest convenience.

Hope it helps,

I purchased an X1 Yoga w/ 512 GB SSD / i5 a couple months ago - loved the laptop.  After a week or so using it I started getting random blue screens of death.  Following the BSOD, the laptop sometimes reboots normally, other times displays an error during boot "2101: Detection error on SSD (M.2)."  If this error message is displayed, the laptop won't boot and has to be restarted again.  After restarting anywhere from one to five times, it returns to function normally.   After experiencing the same problem intermittently for a couple weeks, I finally called Lenovo and reported the issue and registered to return the laptop, ordered a brand new one (again X1 Yoga / 512 GB SSD, this time i7).   After waiting a couple weeks for delivery, I received the new laptop a few days and freshly installed all of my software, transferred my data over from the faulty laptop, and got back to work as of yesterday.  Everything seemed fine, but then again today I got a BSOD with the new laptop, and the same SSD error!   I can't find much information about this error via Google search, and only found one or two posts on the forum here referencing it that aren't very helpful.   It seems like this must be a relatively uncommon problem, but I've had it with two independent laptops.  I haven't installed any exotic software or made any customizations to the laptop - it seems unlikely that I am causing this problem myself.  ... Occasionally I receive e-mails with attachments that Windows Live Mail detects as Prohibited File Types. Since most of them are from friends and relatives, I figure that most of them are probably safe to open. Still, I figure it's better to continue to be cautious by not opening these attachments. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has an opinion one way or the other regarding the level of risk associated with disabling the Prohibited File Type detection. Thank you.

I got a new T440s with a standard disk hard drive. My coworker gave me a Crucial SSD 512GB drive to swap in its place. I imaged the current drive on to the SSD and inserted it. Upon boot, before the boot sequence I receive the 2102 error. There is nothing in the SSD2 slot, as we didn't buy this option. The theory in my workplace (tech firm) is that I may have accidentally turned power on while swapping the drive while no drive was in the primary slot. How/where in the bios do I keep the machine from looking into this slot to boot? Currently what happens is the error is thrown and I have to hit escape to boot windows. This is a minor inconvenience, there is no loss of functionality, but when powering up on a dock or rebooting, it requires user presence. Thanks for your help.

Answer:2102: Detection error on SSD2 (M.2)

t440s might have three slots for drives - one sata III 2,5" and two m.2 slots. Usually new laptops with HDD are shipping with cache m.2 SSD which is placed in the 3rd slot. Since error 2102 is msata drive detection related I'd suggest to check out your laptop configuration and remove small SSD since you have primary SSD drive. But at first check out the function of small SSD drive - cache only or/and hibernation partition storage. And disable appropriate features for that drive.

Underneath this box is another box that states " Need to download & install VIsual Basic Scripting Support". Answer:Install on Demand detection error - help please

Sounds like you could do with a repair of Internet explorer. Either reinstall it, or if you have IE6, go to add/remove programs and choose to removeIE and you will get an option to repair.

I bought a 120G Crucial M500 mSATA ssd a while back and have been seeing fairly consistent boot errors saying it can't detect the ssd. This is my boot/root drive, and the laptop runs fine for days/weeks at a time without problem. Which is odd, because I can boot off that ssd just fine after pressing escape to ignore the error. Sometimes from a cold boot it doesn't happen, but pretty much 100% of reboots result in that error message. Is there a way to fix this? It's rather annoying to have to babysit the laptop on boot.

Answer:W530 and mSATA detection error

Hello and welcome,

Have you checked with Crucial?  I had similar-sounding issues with an M4.  Sometimes the SSD is slow to come on-line due to internal house-keeping work.

Perhaps there's a firmware update or work-around.

Hello all. I've got a user who's T430s just goes to the ThinkPad logo and then after several seconds moves on but never gets to loading Windows. We just get 2100: Detection Error on HHDO. I had another T430s so I swapped drives. Now the T430s that wasn't booting boots fine. So I assumed the hard drive was going but the odd thing is that the 2nd T430s which now has the "problem drive" in it doesn't give me the 2100 error. The catch is the drive is encrypted with BitLocker and no combo of passwords or finger swipes will let us proceed. So my dilemna is I can't tell if this drive is bad because I can't see it. I ran Lenovo Bootable Diagnostics and they said they couldn't scan because it was encrypted. I put the drive in an external dock and connected it to a Windows 10 system and the drive doesn't show up under the Bitlocker to Go section. Is there any way to tell if this drive is completely done? It would be great to get data off of it but I can't seem to find a way. Everything I find seems to require a drive letter and this drive has none. Even booted into a live Ubuntu with the drive in the laptop and it wouldn't see it. Thanks all.

Answer:2100: Detection Error on HHDOcan

A lot of people have had this issue with perfectly good drives, and some have said they resolved it by going into setup, and then saving settings upon exit.   Others have said that by pressing F12, entering the boot menu and selecting the HD will let it boot as well.    Another said that by changing from SATA to Compatibility in the BIOS, restarting and then setting SATA back to AHCI will force a reset of the drive so it will boot too. Not sure if any will work for you, but you might put the drive back in the original system and give it a try (if you have not already anyway). I did see also where Amy_Lenovo posted in the same thread that a fix was found for the X250 ThinkPads, but that it required the system be sent into Lenovo.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga, with a 256GB SSD and an i5 processor. I received it on April 29. After two weeks of normal use, it crashed and gave this error:?2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)?I could not get it to boot. I took it to a computer repair shop and they (Lenovo warrantee) replaced the SSD. It worked for about a week, then crashed again, same error. My tech guy said that it might be a bad board, frying hard drives; but Lenovo insisted on replacing the hard drive again. Ten days later, same crash. I unplugged it and put it on a shelf for the weekend, intending to take it back to the shop. Monday morning I plugged it in and it started up normally. It has been working normally for three days, but I am worried about getting the same error and crash. Can you tell me what might be happening, and if there is anything I can do to prevent a recurrence? This seems to be a common problem across many machine models, but I haven't found any solutions to it.

Hi, I just received my T430 about 4 days ago and it's working perfectly until I was trying to install important windows updates. As I was rebooting my laptop after the installation (which fails everytime I don't know why), my computer gave me a loud beep and a error code of 2101 detection error. So I searched this forum and found this solution http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 from another post that had the same problem as mine.As i was following the steps,( i did cmd, uninstalled express cache, and did disk managment) but as i went on my disk management i could not find my mSATA. I have a 16 gb mSATA and it was working perfectly fine before. I've noticed on my reboot that it took longer to load and the error message would then come up.So my problem is that I cannot view my mSATA disk on my disk managementThankyou!

Answer:2101 Detection Error: Cannot view my mSATA

The Error 2101: Detection error on HDDx miniSata is a BIOS error. This has nothing to do with the operating system you have installed or any drivers. During the POST, the system does not see the miniSata drive. I (like some others) received my new T530 recently, setup it all up and then a few hours later received this error. The solution is simple. You must open up your ThinkPad. Remove the two keyboard screws and remove the keyboard and RE-SEAT the miniSata drive. There is 1 screw holding the board down. Remove it, re-insert it in. Screw everything back up and voila, no more issue. Go to the Lenovo / ThinkPad Guides and Manuals page for your device (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?) and download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your ThinkPad. There are clear instructions (for those less inclined) on how to remove the keyboard. You do NOT need to disconnect the ribbon cable. Simple / carefully slide the keyboard forward and the miniSata drive will be visible and accessible. You can also use the ExpressCache program to get stats on the miniSata drive and see how it is working. Open a Command Prompt (in Administrator Mode) and issue the command: eccmd -info   -   Display ExpressCache activity informatio eccmd -?   -  Will show you all options eccmd -format   - Will reformat and clear the cache drive. Hopefully, this will help out those out there with this issue. My W530 has just started displaying the detection error, however, Windows can still see the device, as well as the BIOS

Windows shows it as the actual hard drive model.

however, the BIOS shows it as DISK.

does this mean the drive is failing(again), or is it the SATA controller?

I just bought a W550s, and have just installed all the current windows updates, added my antivirus, office suite, adobe suite, winrar. That's pretty much everything I've done to it so far. Just booted it up after installing most recent windows update. Came up on the black screen "2102 detection error for SSD2" Press ESC to proceed I've had lenovos (Thinkcentres, thinkpads), but never really had these kind of issues. What is the best process to get a hold of support? Nothing wrong with phone support, but I've found myself clicking through the suitable options and being on the phone with a software company that has no real relation to Lenovo, so I'd prefer to at least start a ticket/investigation by email/online.

Answer:W550s: 2102 detection error for SSD2

Hi Lolenick,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per my knowledge the issue is indicating to mSATA drive which will serve as SSD2 and it is giving error. I?d suggest you to look at your laptop configuration and remove small SSD since you have primary SSD drive. But at first check out the function of small SSD drive - cache only or/and hibernation partition storage. And disable appropriate features for that drive.

Hope this helps!!

Hello,I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (Type 20A7) and after 14 months of use now, I got the error "2100 detection error on ssd0 (M.2)".I saw different topics about that kind of error and Lenovo really disappointed me -_- (they were different years I wasn't purchasing Lenovo anymore and this has been a sad welcome back).I saw some solutions about the Lenovo X1 Carbon 1st Gen, but I didn't find anything about how to fix it on the 2nd Gen. I read this https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504 and I would like to know it there is a way to manually install that firmware without have access to the operating system. I was running Debian 8 on my laptop when that error occurred and I have bunch of important data that I need to recover!I know, it's bad not have a backup and I usually do it, but I never had any problem with any HDD/SSD on all the laptops I had (a lot) and being that an expensive laptop, I couldn't imagine that was gonna happen (and just after 14 months of use). I tried running a live GNU/Linux distro to check if it was able so see the SSD to make a backup, but nothing...I put the SSD in a SATA adapter, connected to different laptops running Windows 7, but nothing. I really hope the SSD is not dead at all. Anyone able to help me? Both about to fix that error and have my system back or recover my data from the SSD that is not recognized/seen on any system.Thanks! p.s: the SSD is a MZNTD512HAGL-000L1

Hi and welcome, X1CarbYuu've linked the proper page regarding issue.Another ones, with details (note, fw package has different file name, I can't confirm whether its content differs from the page in your post):http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-...There is readme file.I searched on the Samsung support site information about the recent fw available, but faced a bit difficulties.Regarding the fw update on the system w/o Windows installed I have the only suggestion to use bootable media like LiveUSB, Windows To Go, WinPE 5.0. Probably fw update tool will work.I'm worry you weren't able to connect SSD to the external laptop. I hope you didn't perform to boot that laptop from current Samsung SSD. Perhaps there was some incompatibility between BIOS, adapter, SSD fw, drivers.

Good day dear forum members! My brand new X1 Carbon arrived fully loaded......with errors. Right out of the box it hit me with a BSOD (CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED). The system boots from the second attempt, but BSOD pops up every 5-10min. All drivers/BIOS updated. 1TB Samsung nvme ssd (PM961 f/w3L0QCXY7) seems to be using a driver dated 6/21/2006 and so does its "Standard NVM Express Controller". Samsung nvme driver cannot be installed because it claims there's no suitable ssd, Samsung magician doesn't recognize the drive either, however, it is properly identified in the device manager. Any suggestions before I ship this back..? Any help appreciated.

Hi, I bought my P50 like 4 months back and suddenly it has started to throw this error when the machine is starting up."2100: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)". I have run the tests in BIOS mode and all the tests got passed. I have faced the error 2 times now and after keeping the machine down for few minutes and switching back on resolved the issue. I have started my machine this morning, and from Windows login screen machine sudddenly restarted saying "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION". And on the restart I got the error. I do have a feeling that this not related to actual hardware, but firmware etc.  Any ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks.Jaliya

Whenever I try to restart my ThinkPad T440s, it takes a very long time to get past the "ThinkPad" screen.  If I hard reboot it while it's stuck here (press and hold the power key, then turn it back on), it loads just fine.  However, if I let it keep going it beeps loudly and angrily and gives me the 2100: Detection error on HDDO (Main HDD) on a black screen with only "Press Esc to continue".  When I press Esc it loads the boot screen, but without access to my hard drive.  If I hard reboot it again, it starts just fine. Any ideas on why it would be doing this, or what I could do to fix it?  It looks like it was a common problem a few years ago, but this is new to me and it doesn't really look like there was a fix back then.  Hoping there's better news now? Any help is appreciated!

My son is running a PC with XP pro. I ran AVG antivirus and it has detected 3 viruses in a zip file (count.jar-43c66fb6-14c3949a.zip) called BlackBox.class, Verifier.class, and Beyond.class. I tried to follow through on the AVG suggested removal which says if you haven't got Java plug-ins installed you can delete the appropriate file. When I do this it appears to prevent access to the internet. Any advice much appreciated.A bit of further info, on boot up it keeps generating a message that New hardware relating to an Ipod has been found, even though no such item (we don't have one) or infact anything is plugged into any of the ports.I am not sure if the Online gaming that appears to have installed itself in favourites(and cannot be deleted is any connection, it also appears to have installed a browser bar at the bottom of the screen which also I don't appear to be able to remove.

Nothing of that. poor service for such a great brand. But now my problem. about 3 weeks ago all of a sudden my SSD stopped and generated this 2100 error. It's a Samsung M27TD256 from the same series as Lenovo mentioned. Because of Lenovo's attitude of not servicing (Oh yes the supportdesk guy said SSD Failure, needs to be replaced for new) i went on to the Internet how to open the machine and without any damage that was no problem. I have a computer repaircentre myself and i tried to replace te Samsung SSD with: a 120 Gb Kingston SSD / a 240 Gb Kingston Fury SSD / an Intel 120 Gb SSD. All brand new, right out of stock, non will work !!!So i took the old original SSD, tested it in another PC and it works perfectly, i could install Win 10 and boot from it.I put it bak in the Yoga... nothing. the 2100 error again. So i thought it would be the mailboard or controller but curious a i am, i took an old 250 Gb harddrive, no SSD and guess what....... The Yoga booted up without any error messages, external DVD connected and i could install an OS (whatever, Win8... Read more

Answer:2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Where is ...

I had the same problem on a S230U Lenovo Twist. I replaced the MB and the HDD and the HD connector/controller and had the same problem. By accident, as a result of testing I installed the HD without the bracket that holds it in place. Voila it has not failed once since then. It has been running flawlessly for 2 months or more now. I havent bothered to reinstall the bracket since it is running great. There is almost no extra room in the HD compartment so I am not worried about it flopping around. Only thing I can figure is there is some kind of static buildup with the bracket installed. I tried bending the bracket to see if I could make it contact the MB to discarge static if that was the case. No good. Removed the bracket, and it worked immediately. I don't know if that will work for you but it worked for me.

Recently I was in the middle of using my laptop when it bluescreened and crashed. Now I'm not proud of this, but for some reason this is not an uncommon sight; I bought this off of eBay a couple months ago and it worked fine for a few days before randomly bluescreening often. Now I tried to change and install all the eight drivers, and while that solved most issues for awhile. But then I received a detection error 2100 main hdd0 on startup. Now I actually fixed it that time, and none of my files seemed to be damaged, which is strange given the nature of the error but I didn't question it. Now however the error is back seemingly inspired and I can't seen to get my laptop to simply boot. I ran the memory test and it passed and I don't even have an ssd so I don't know what the issue is or why it was fixed last time (I changed the SATA to compatability and then back to ahci and reset it). I think it might have to do with a faulty or corroded contact but I have not opened it to check. If it's anything like last time, I'm willing to bet that there is actually nothing wrong with my drive but something is again causing it not to be detected. I do have photos if that will help, but they need to be compressed so for now I hope this will be enough.

I have a Lenovo E550 with a HDD and i5 processor. It was bought about two years ago and it works fine until today. I found that the computer cannot start normally and "2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" just showed up after a few seconds. I did the lenovo diagnostic test but all test passed. I cannot find any solution of this problem online. please help.

Answer:2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)

It usually means the HDD is dying.  Do you have a backup?

I have a T420 and tried a Crucial M500 but kept getting the 2100 detection error.   I'm wondering if the mSATA version would be OK or if this problem is present on both the main SATA bay as well as the mSATA connection? Has anyone had this error when booting an SSD from the mSATA port? Thanks!

Answer:Has anyone had the 2100: detection error on the mSATA port?

I run a Crucial m4 mSATA 256GB in my T420.

As I mentioned in your other thread, I saw the error once or twice - IIRC on the very first power-up and again after a firmware update.  Once the SSD finished its internal housekeeping, it never happened again.

Motherboard: Asus P5N- MX motherboard; BIOS update 903
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Processor
OS: Windows XP

I was trying to install a new CPU and in the middle of that process, I found I needed to update the BIOS. Again this took some time to do but once it was updated, I saw this message:

"The system intruded, chassis opened, or tempered before. Please check the system."

I looked up the issue and did a series of things to mend it.

Checked the manual. According to it, there is no switch in the BIOS itself, only a physical set of pins which by default have a jumper cap over them to short the detector. Upon checking my MB, I found this jumper cap was missing, so I ordered a batch and replaced it. Problem continued.

Reset CMOS. I turned the PC off, removed the battery, then moved the jumper cap to clear CMOS according to the manual. Waited about a minute to be safe before returning the cap to its original position and putting the battery back in. Problem persists.

Updated BIOS again. I'd previously had issues updating the BIOS only to learn the file was not being detected was all. Once that was settled, it was updated and this new issue appeared. After calling ASUS, the rep suggested the first two options I mentioned as well as checking for an even more recent update to the BIOS. I had the most recent one, but I re-updated it anyway. Problem persists.

Check jumper caps. I thought maybe the cap was not secure enough for the short to be detected, so I checke... Read more

First, please forgive me. I am a computer noob. I'm not very savvy with computers, so I might need "extra" help.

We have a shared family computer and today, all of a sudden, a window popped up and said something along the lines of, "Hard Drive Detection Error". My wife restarted the computer and everything on the desktop disappeared, none of the programs were in the Startup menu and we have no idea what happened and how to fix this. I've searched and found that others had similar experiences. I'm not sure if my hard drive really is out of commission or if we've contracted a virus.

I'm running Windows XP (sorry not sure which Service Pack). My hard drive is petitioned into 2 parts, Operating System is on the C:\ and everything else (music, games, pics, etc...) is on the E:\. It seems like everything still shows up on the E:\, that's why I believe I may have contracted a virus???

Can someone please help this noob out?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, I bought Thinkpad Yoga last year. The Yoga originally came with 512 GB HDD plus 16GB SanDisk SSD. A couple of days ago, I replaced the original HDD with Crucial BX100 SSD (500GB). Since then, I have the 2100 error. It goes like this. When I boot the computer by pressing the power button on the side of the computer, it boots well. About 30 minues later, the computer suddenly loses connection with the newly installed SSD, and shows 2100 error message on black screen. When I press any key (as instructed on the screen), the computer shows Boot Menu. But the Boot Menu lists only ATA HDD1: SANDisk SSD U110 16GB.  When I reinstalled the original HDD, 2100 error didn't happen. But I don't want to use HDD anymore for speed issue.  If anyone solved a similar problem, please help me.  Thanks in advance.- H_Kim.

Answer:2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)

This is not just that one particular comptuer type or HDD type. I have two different Edge Series comptuers with standard HDD that are consistantly getting the 2100 Connection Error and Missing Operating System errors at bootup. Have to boot a couple of times to get the OS to load properly.

I go to the toilet and when I get back to my PC my firewall is notifying me that '94519b49-aef8-4350-8c25-b2f29e1c06b6.exe' wants internet access and was running from the setup folder under Avast parent folder. Gave it temp access but when I go to look for that file there is no such file.

Answer:Anyone know what this Avast file is?

Clearly not a security buff

The amount of moronic upgrades that free AVs get is hard to follow, but this particular one sounds malwareish. It shouldn't be in the software's root folder.

Answer:X240 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)

Hi - I've seen this so many times I lost track. I have about 100 X240 with the Samsung 256GB SSD and 100 T440 with the same drives. Periodically they crash and boot to the same error: 2100: Detection error on HDD0. If you reboot a few times it will come back. I suggest dowloading the SSD firwmare: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS034646 If that doesn't work, call it to Lenovo and have them send you a warranty replacement.

Hello,I have SSD installed into mSATA slot and 9mm HDD installed into ultrabay slot with HDD adapter. But I REMOVED the original 7mm HDD and now there is nothing in regular hard drive slot. After restart, there is a couple of beeps and error message " 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) press ESC to continue", and booting proceeds only after I press ESC. Before that there was no such error. Laptop still boots well from SSD and HDD in ultrabay works well, but this error during startup is annoying at least.Laptop Thinkpad T430s. Is there any way to disable SATA port that corresponds to HDD0 (may be in BIOS?) or any other way to get rid of the error? The HDD in Ultrabay slot is 9mm, so I think there is no way to fit it into main HDD slot. Thanks!
