I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How to install Everything in new upgraded 750gb hdd from 250gb

The recovery discs that come with preloaded systems usually require the HD currently in the machine to be exactly the same as the one that was in the unit when sold. I would contact the maker or check their online support. Perhaps you can get a discounted upgrade to Windows 7. Or you may be able to install Windows 7 for evaluation purposes using an install image. You may want to check out Windows 7 Help Forums for guidance. The evaluation period is plenty of time to determine everything works.

Answer:New HDD just WONT accept windows 7 from 250gb to 750gb

Hello OfficialSteve. Welcome to the Forum.

Your description of your problem is so broad it could mean anything. Could you describe exactly what is going wrong with the installation? Is it that the installer cannot find a drive to install to? Or does the installation crash? Do you get ant error messages?

I am finishing a new build and using 750 gb hard drive with Vista Premium. Will I be able to create several partition/volumes? Can I choose the sizes? What are some recommendations of the number and sizes of the partitions? Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks,

Answer:New Install On A New 750gb Disk

If the drive is new with no existing partitions, you'll be able to specify the size of your system partition during the install. I'd suggest select a size adequate for all you wish to install onto the system, (perhaps 32GB?) but avoid simply accepting to use the entire drive. Limiting the size of the system volume makes cleanup/mainenance and backup much simpler. Once Windows is installed you can create however many data partitions you want from the remainder of the drive, either one 700+ volume or more smaller ones. Again, several partitions can help with organising & backing up your data, at the expense of slightly more complex drive arrangements during saving, searching etc.

Hello

I tried installing 64bit Win 7 Ultimate on mirrored 3TB Seagate HDD using a Digitus RAID card and failed. After the failed attempt, I disconnected the HDD and plugged the primary HDD to an on-board SATA connector only to find its capacity reduced to 750 GB. Windows Preinstallation Environment shows the same size and running clean produced no effect.

Something odd I noticed after running diskpart is that no matter how many drive is connected to onboard SATA, it only shows the 750 GB and the PC name is MINWINPC.

I`m completely stuck with this and cannot figure any solution. Please anyone help me restore the original 3TB size.

Looking forward to replies.

Hello!

Followed the advice of some other posters and I did the following:

1.) Downloaded Imgburn and GParted
2.) Installed my new HDD
3.) Changed BIOS boot to CD ->> HDD
4.) Loaded up GParted; Cloned my Partition from 250GB to the 1TB.
5.) Turned off computer, removed old HDD.
6.) Turned on computer, got this error.

Apparently this means that the computer cannot find an OS. If I cloned the HDD, why can it not find the OS?

Any help?

Answer:Upgraded my 250GB to 1TB HDD using GParted. Intel Boot Agent: No Boot Filename Recieved! Help!

Hello,

I guess your HDD is not bootable...
I mean first format your HDD, set the patitions you need, set the wanted partition as primary and active, load your 250GB.

Well just thought...;
check the settings of your HDD, does your Jumper is in "master" position (check the diagram on the HDD if you are not sure) and the second point if you have Connector make sure you do not have 2 master on the same map (your DVD player and your hard drive for instance) .

Let us know and good luck!!!

To date I've upgraded the BIOS (UEFI) on a ASUS P67 Performance Gen3 motherboard. I've changed the SATA Mode to AHCI. I can see the drive in the BIOS.

The Windows installer the page where it lists the drive partitions. I only see one drive partio

Drive 0 Partition 1 239.9GB 232.8 GB Primary

I get the error

The New button is greyed out and when I select next I get

Are you installed in UEFI Mode? If so, when you boot from the USB drive use the entry that says UEFI and the name of your USB. If not in UEFI, boot from the name of your USB without UEFI in front of it. Delete all partitions on the drive until it says unallocated and then click the 'NEW" button. The installer will create all the necessary partitions. I hope that helps.

This is my first post on this web site. I certainly not a guru and could use some help of this is the way you ask for it. At 78 I am kind of slow and methodical but am willing to follow detailed instructions as to how to keep my old pc going.

The Windows community has convinced me to do a clean install of Windows 7 on a new 250GB SSD that is replacing my HDD. The C: HDD is getting errors when I use Seagate's SeaTools programs and my PC has really slowed down to a crawl. in trying to repair my C: HDD I have run System File Checker multiple times (no Problems). Checkdisk multiple times /f/r options. it only shows errors on stage 5 of 5 free space verification and correcting errors in the volume bitmap.
My latest Windows Backup on a flash drive and a Windows System image on the External HDD are considered not reliable by the community and they strongly recommend a clean install of Windows 7
I have the WIN 7 DVD with product key that I purchased when I went from XP to Win 7. I have the other SW apps product DVDs. Although I have a Windows Backup and a Windows 7 System Image I have been told, and I believe, that this would be dangerous to use vs doing a clean install. Now that I am convinced to do just that I want to be pro-active in making sure that I do it right.
Is there a step by step process documented anywhere that will take me through this install. I need to save years of data from all of my pc applications, e.g., Quicken, Word, Excel, Adobe, email, etc.

Hi Roger, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The process of clean installing and restoring your data is quite straight forward. You can use Windows Easy Transfer (WET) to backup your personal data, all your documents, images and such, then clean install and finally retrieve the backed up data again using WET.Step 1: Use WET to transfer your settings and data to an external hard disk or USB drive
Step 2: Clean install Windows 7 on your new SSD
Step 3: Use WET to restore your settings and data
Tutorials:Windows Easy Transfer - Transfer To & From Computers
Clean Install Windows 7
If you have any questions or issues either with WET or clean install, please post your questions in respective tutorial thread. Any other concerns, please post here or start a new thread in an appropriate section of our forums.

has anyone installed a Samsung 850 EVO in a dell 3542. ive seen older posts on net where people were unsuccessful. going crazy researching this drive. and if u did get it installed. was it WOW thats so much faster?

Answer:anyone install samsung 850 evo 250gb in 3542 laptop?

Whether you can use one depends on which version of the system you have.
One version has a Celeron CPU (N30xx) and an embedded 32G eMMC drive - this one CANNOT  be upgraded to a 2.5" EVO SSD.
The higher line model has an i3 CPU and comes with a 500 G hard drive.  That model CAN be upgraded to a 2.5" EVO SSD.
Yes, the EVO will be immensely faster than a conventional hard drive.

I have a Gateway NX860X laptop here and the HD crashed. So I grabbed a brand new 250gb SATA drive, formatted it NTFS thru the USB port on a different PC, and popped it in the laptop. XP setup didn't see the drive (BIOS does) so I hooked up a USB floppy drive, created an 'F6' SATA driver disk for the Intel ICH7 Mobile chipset, and restarted the XP setup. This time I pressed F6 at the appropriate moment, loaded the drivers from the floppy as I've done dozens of times on other PCs, and XP setup saw the drive and let me format it again. But right after the format, when setup says "Checking Drive C:...." and then says "Creating list of files to be copied" it stops, and goes to a screen that says "Insert Intel Storage Matrix Manager in Drive A: - Press Enter When Ready". But the thing is, the disk is in the drive already, and pressing Enter does nothing - the floppy drive doesn't spin up, removing the disk does nothing, different disks do nothing. It's like the floppy drive itself disappears at this point, and the XP install is basically impossible.
HELP!!!!

(Just for kicks, I installed Windows 7 w/o a hitch; I then reformatted the drive and installed Vista just to see what would happen; both Vista and W7 install fine like I figured they would, but XP craps out right before the file copy part of setup is supposed to start)

Hello
My laptop has two regular harddrives, one of which I rarely use. So I am thinking to transfer the files and documents that I don't regularly access to the unused harddrive and transfer the OS and programs to a 250 gb SSD that can be installed internally.

I have been looking online, but it seems that the cost of a 250gb ssd may not be low enough for my tastes. I am wondering if anyone knows what brands or models I should be focusing on and whether anyone is aware of very good deals.

Hi folks, I bought ThinkPad R61 3 years ago and it has been working perfectly. Last week however I dropped it down and as a result the original HDD is damaged. So I have bought new hard drive - SEAGATE 250GB SATA2/8MB 9.5mm and it turned out that I cannot install Windows XP (neither SP2 nor SP3) on it.The message from the Windows setup is: ?Setup did not find any hard disk drive installed in your computer.? Well, of course before the installation I have partitioned the hard drive (with Partition Magic) ? I have created primary drive, activated it, then I have formatted it.I tried everything I could think of but the result is the same ? Windows XP setup does not recognize the hard drive :-(Unfortunately I do not have recovery disks. Can anybody help me with advice how to get rid of this situation and install the Windows XP on the new SEAGATE drive? Thanks and best regards,Lyubomir

Hi folks,

I recently bought a new Hitachi 250GB SATA hard drive and created one primary partition of full size using Partition Magic on a boot disk. I then installed windows xp on it (no service packs). Straight after install I noticed it showed as a 232GB drive (fair enough) but also said around 113GB of space had been used.

I have now installed some more applications and the total file size of everything on the drive totals 24.1GB. My C drive shows 134GB used with 98.3GB free.

I guess it's something to do with partitioning larger HD's but I'm new to all that so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I downloaded the Dell Windows Recovery Image for my laptop onto my USB drive to reinstall Windows 10 onto the new drive.

Anyone else have any insight? This my first time doing a swap like this with a Windows 10 machine.

Have completed a clean upgrade to Windows 10 (from 7) , bought a new SSD and want to install Windows on the SSD.

Having some problems completing this as used the windows media tool to crate an installation dvd. When I swapped drives and ran the disk it asked for the product key? I am not aware of receiving this after the upgrade.

I thought to have both drives installed and clone my old HDD to the new SSD. But, seems that I this model (Asus G73JG laptop), only recognises a SSD when it's in the primary slot. Doesn't appear in the BIOS or windows when installed in the 2nd bay.

So, what am I doing wrong, how can I install windows on this new drive?

Thanks

Hey guys. Long time lurker, first-time poster.I have a Sony VAIO VGN-S460 Laptop. It's not my main pc, but it's still quick and gets the job done. I wanted to use it for some music recording but the HD was almost full. I decided to buy a new one and use the old one as an external whenever I needed it.It came with a 80GB 5400RPM HD so I went out and bought a 500GB 7200RPM HD - This one exactlyThe BIOS recognizes the 500GB, but when I go to install XP, after Creating a partition. it doesn't matter whether I choose the quick or normal formatting, it comes up with this error:"Setup was unable to format the partition. The disk may be damaged. Make sure the drive is switched on and properly connected to your computer. If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated. Consult your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more information."It's a legit XP CD - Laptop was working fine before the switch - Ram was upgraded recently as well.Any ideas? Does the BIOS limit HD capacity??Thanks in advance, guys!

Answer:Upgraded Laptop HD, now XP won't install

Well, it's very possible the drive is bad. You can visit the website of the hd manufacturer, download their diagnostic utility, burn it to cd, boot to it and run it. But if I were you I'd return the drive. I'd also replace it with a better known name brand (ie, Seagate, WD, Maxtor, etc).

If I can now somehow buy a Windows 7 Pro license and install W7 Pro on this laptop and then upgrade it to W10. Will it then be a W10 Pro installation with a new W10 license or will it still get the old W10 Home license which was previously activated on this laptop?

Check your C:\ in Windows Explorer. If you have a Windows.old folder, then it was upgraded. But the .old folder can be deleted so it not being there doesn't guarantee it's fresh.

Hi all,

So I have an older Lenovo G550 laptop that came with Windows 7 pre-installed and has a Windows 7 licence sticker on the bottom. The computer was upgraded to Windows 10 when it came out as a Windows Update (so we don't have a Windows 10 licence key).

The hard drive has now failed, so a new one has been purchased as a replacement.

I read some threads on here about re-installing Windows 10 if it was an upgrade, and apparently you can do it without a key if you have the SAME hardware. But i have a NEW hard drive.

1. Has anyone attempted this with a new hard drive and been successful?
2. If not, is there a way to get a licence key or do I have to go back to Windows 7?
3. The computer didn't come with media, can a Windows OS be downloaded or do I have to buy the manufacturer's recovery CD? The laptop has a DVD drive in case of ISOs or can use a USB stick. (ETA: The computer that will be making the DVD or boot media is running Linux, so the Media Creation Tool mentioned in the tutorial won't work).

Thanks!!

I feel sure that the portable is just not current enough on hardware and marginal on RAM. So I plan to replace the existing HD with a SSD.

Thelaptop is a Dell E5510. I am so far unfamiliar with W10 and do not know how to determine what the processor is, size of the HDD, and how much RAM it has. Is there software in W10 that will profile the hardware?

In any case, I expect that the procedure will be the same. This is what I would do in the absence of a better plan:

update w10
back up my files
clone the existing HDD to a SSD using a USB>SATA cable (suggestions for free or low cost software welcomed)
replace the existing HDD with the SSD
boot up

Is this a good plan? Happy to hear a better one.

Answer:laptop upgraded to 10 is very slow now. install SSD?

A clean install would be better, if you don't mind re-installing your programs/applications:

In between steps 6 and 7 of the above tutorial you would remove the HDD and install the SSD and do the clean install to the SSD. You could then connect the HDD to the SATA to USB adapter/cable to retrieve files from it.

If you do want to clone, Macrium Reflect Free and MiniTool Partition Wizard are both good free programs to accomplish that.

Don't need a key. When doing a clean install on the same machine you upgraded and it asks for the product key, choose skip. Then go make sure it's activated. I did hear that the activation may take a few tries as it's now getting hammered.

I upgraded to windows 10 for free from windows 7. I want to buy an ssd to replace my hard drive and perform a fresh, clean install. How do I install windows 10 on my ssd without having to purchase? Is it possible?

Answer:Clean install of windows 10 on SSD when upgraded from win 7

Welcome to Ten Forums Tizer

You simply do a clean install and windows will activate when you get online, just choose skip when it asks for a key during the install.

Once you`ve upgraded to W10 on your motherboard you have what is called a Digital License, which is stored on Microsoft`s servers.

Make sure you get your Network drivers before you start, you`ll need to install them before you can get online.

Windows 10 may have the drivers, it may not. Better to be safe then sorry.

Hi All,

I successfully upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10 (both Pro 64-bit) in PC's old HDD. Now I want do a clean install on a brand new SSD. I have a few questions before I buy the SSD.

1. First off, is it possible to do a clean install of Win 10 in the new SSD especially after I upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10 in the old HDD?

2. If 1 is possible, then at any point do I need to enter the Win 10 license key? I have used a Win 10 license key viewing tool to find out what it is.

3. Should I use the Win 10 Media Creation tool to create the ISO or just download an untouched Win 10 Pro 64 bit ISO, burn it to a DVD and do a straightforward install?

3. What happens to the Win 10 in the old HDD? Does it get deactivated on its own?

Thanks!

This is a brand new laptop. Only thing loaded on it was the Windows 8.1 OS. The "Get Windows 10" app said that I qualified for a free upgrade to Windows 10. After reading an article on how to do a clean install of Windows 10, I did the following:

1. Upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10.
2. Downloaded the Media Creation Tool.
3. Used the MCT to create a bootable USB on a 16GB USB flash drive.
4. Booted from the flash drive, did a clean install of Windows 10 (essentially, formatted the drive to load the OS)
5. During installation, got a window asking for product key. Since the article said to skip this (because Windows would 'remember' my previous activation for this laptop) I did so.
6. Installation completed without a hitch.

Now, however, Windows 10 is acting like I don't have an activated version. I keep getting messages like "You can personalize this PC until it is Activated". But... it WAS activated before I did the clean install. I messed around with the OS, checking out different features, before doing the clean install.

My question is, why is this happening? I tried rolling back to Windows 8 (Pressing F3 on boot) but there is no option to go back to Windows 8.1, only Windows 10.

So, what should/can I do to get around this aggravating issue?

Thanks!

Answer:Upgraded from 8.1 to Win 10. Did a clean install, but now problem.

I did a clean install as well from a Windows 10 ISO and it worked like a charm.

Did you check to see if the upgraded Windows 10 was activated before you did the clean install?

So, I finished upgrading one of my machines from Windows 7 sp1 this morning, and the upgrade went off without a hitch. Very nice!

Now my question. What do I do if a year from now I need to reload windows 10. I noted that the product key that was given to me, at least the one that is displayed under system, is mighty generic and does not look like it would work for re-install. Once we have upgraded, do we have a means then of reloading windows 10 in the future?

Answer:Now that I've upgraded, how would I re-install in future if needed?

If your mobo has a UEFI BIOS on it, the product key has been "baked" onto the board. You can now do a clean install of Win10 as many times as you want and you will never have to worry about having a license number again.

Hello folks,

I tried to perform a clean install on the very first instance at the time of 'upgrade' but since it didn't work. I had to upgrade it on existing windows 7 installation. Now the machine is so slow that constantly it shows 100% disk usage. I tried every possible solution on the web and nothing worked so planning to do a clean install.

My question is related to the license. The current installation is activated so in theory, I should not face any issues with the activation and it should be seamless. But a quick google search tells that it is quite common to have hassles with the installation.

I wonder if there is any option that I can backup license key or activation key or something similar and use it once I perform the clean install.

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Clean install on upgraded Windows 10

Hi, once you have activated '10 on your PC you can freely reinstall even after some hardware change. Activation should be automatic- skip any prompt to enter a key.

I was one that was able to upgrade for free from Windows 7. Everything had worked just fine, yet my computer never ran nearly as good after the 1607 update, despite fixes.

With my upgrade, am I able to Clean Install without having to install Windows 7 first then upgrade to Windows 10? If so, do I need any information PRIOR TO starting this process?

Answer:Can I Clean Install Win10 If I Upgraded from 7?

Yes. You have a Digital Licence for Windows 10 tied to your PC's hardware and stored on Microsoft's activation servers. If asked for a key, click 'I don't have one'. You don't need it - after a clean install the licence will be checked and automatically activate the new install.

NB: you must install the same edition, Home or Pro as you had before.

I upgraded from Win 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Home through the usual method, but I wanted to clean install, so I used Microsofts tool for creating install media and made a windows home usb stick and clean installed from that. Activation worked automatically as expected and I've been using w10 ever since quite happily, though I really do think I'd prefer to have pro on the computer.

I see right now I can only upgrade to pro through the store app (as a side question will there ever be a retail pro pack available like there was for Windows 8? Only it tends to be cheaper than buying directly from Microsoft). If I upgrade to pro, what happens exactly if I ever need to reinstall the OS?

Do I just use the existing 10 home usb media I made and then download the pro pack again from the store (presumably it'd be free since I'd already bought it), or can I just create a new usb media with the pro version of 10 instead and install it that way?

Answer:What happens when you clean install, having previously upgraded to Pro

Hi have you got the link for upgrade to windows 10 pro please also cant find it in store

Hello,
I am current running on Windows 10 Pro, upgraded from Windows 7 Pro Retail.

I am going to make a fresh install Win 10, but with which Product Key will I need to use to active (Windows 7)?
Or do I have to install Windows 7 first (and upgrade to Windows 10 again)?

Or, if I want to transfer my license to an another computer, do I need to install Windows 7 first?

Thank you so much :-)

Answer:Fresh install, upgraded license

You simply install 10 Pro and skip key entry. In rare event, it does not activate, use 7 pro key to activate.

To transfer to new pc, you can clean install windows 10, and use 7 key to activate. However sometimes it will complain key is in use, so you would need to reinstall 7 (don't do all the updates), then telephone activate it, saying that is your only pc. Then you will be able to clean install 10 and use 7 key to activate. You are required to move OS from old drive of course.

A good trick is to install 7 on a spare hard drive, temporarily removing drive with 10 installed.

My scanner Compeye simplex 1236c, was used on Win 98 PC. I plugged the scanner on my XP pro but was told to upgrade by a driver for XP as its not compatable. I have this driver now but when I istalled it on XP I was told error something, besides being warned that if I install it, my computer can be harmed because it was not known by Microsoft. How can I make the XP Wizard find this updated driver? Where does it install? I am confused on this one.

Answer:upgraded scanner driver; where install?

If you can find (in Device Manager) a yellow exclamation mark alongside a scanner you can right click and "update driver" Then direct the process to where your scanner driver download is saved. The warning from Microsoft often pops up just because Micrsoft didn't write the code! You have no need to worry if you downloaded from the maker's site.

Yes. He can do a Clean Install.
Make sure the USB has the same Win 10 version as the one that is on the computer now.
He does NOT need the Win 8 product key.
When he starts the clean install, he will be asked for a product key.
Just select the SKIP option and continue.
Activation after install will be automatic.

Hey guys,
I've had a desktop pc lying around unused for around a year and decided to upgrade it, admittedly without really knowing what i'm doing. The original was - click here - this exact model.
I upgraded to an nVidia GTX970, a corsair 600w PSU and bought a 500gb Samsung 850 EVO SSD. I also bought a new copy of Windows 10.
Everything is fine inside the case and as far as I can tell it's all connected right. However when I turn on the machine with the boot DVD inside, it starts to run the Windows 10 loading screen but then after around 3-4 minutes just powers off.
If I go to the setup (f2 on startup) it can stay active forever without powering down. I don't know enough about computers to know where the issue lies.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Upgraded and trying to clean install but crashes

No need to buy a new copy of W/10 it is a free upgrade from W/7.

Hey all, resently I upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Update and I figured I should do a clean install along with it. Not because there is any issue or what ever but I feel like I need a fresh windows 10.

When I initiate the reset part and it reboots, at some point during the procentage process it stops and says the Reset has stopped and couldnt be performed. I read around the internet and they suggest you download the Windows 10 ISO file and run a repair so I downloaded it using the Media Creation Tool and put it on an USB drive, but it fails to launch the Repair too. Not sure why this happens and what to do about it at this point, any ideas?

Hi all,

Iv'e just bought a new motherboard, gigabyte ga-n650sli-ds4l (rev 1.0), new processor, intel Q6600 2.4 GHz and a new 250GB sata hdd with a Zalman heatpipe and 600W PSU and i am using my 8600GT from my older system. Originally i tried to boot up with the old IDE HDD which had XP Home OEM installed and it would not boot up past the XP splash screen just after the BIOS - kept on rebooting. I thought this would be because i'd changed major components in the machine so i fired in the new SATA drive. Now when installing XP with the same CD on a pretty much split new system i boot up via CD and run through the drivers copying accross etc etc but when windows then reboots to load up the installation it restarts the PC. Sometimes i get further and it gets to the point where i can enter dates and times etc but it still restarts. Iv'e tried 3 diffrent copied of XP so i doubt its the CD. Ive taken it to my local PC shop to make sure ive not missed anything silly like the motherboard contacting the case but its all ok from that angle - have tried all the ram chips in all slots, tried booting with only one chip etc but still the same issue. Also put most of the old stuff on the new motherboard and the same problem. Have also updated the BIOS incase thats the problem but im thinking iv'e been sent a duff motherboard? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Which version do you need to install, 8.1 or 10? If you use the Dell-provided factory restore you'll get Win8 or 8.1. If you want Win10 you might want to look at Win10 recovery options in Settings, Update & Security.

Reinstall from scrarch by creating a bootable usb flashdrive. You have the iso so burn it using rufus or similar.

Boot from usb, slect custom install, delete all partitions, and install skipping key entry.

Clean Install Windows 10 Directly without having to Upgrade First - Windows 10 Forums

HiWhats the best procedure to reinstall Win10, if you took the free upgrade from Win7? i'm now on the Win10 Creators edition, but changing everything over this weekend, new mobo, gpu ........ and so on. What's the procedure seeing that this is completely new hardware... Where's the best place to get the ISO ? also what happens when it asks me to enter in a serial key? Just skip and login using my microsoft account that knows i have an lic associated to my Microsoft sign-on ?Thanks

Answer:Win10 Upgraded from Win7 - new build need to re-install O/S

The free digital license that you got for W10 on the old motherboard is not transferable so it will not be possible to use your Microsoft account and hope that it will automatically activate.

The official route is to buy a new W10 OS, however, there are reports that the free upgrade from W7 and W8 is still working so you might want to give that a try.

Hi.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 with the Windows 8 upgrade assistant, and chose the option to "install now".

I'm running windows 8 now, but I've changed my mind and want to do a clean install. How can I do that? I did't burn the iso to a USB the first time. And if I run the upgrade assistant again now it says I can't install windows 8 on this computer (because it's already installed)

Any help?

Thanks

Answer:Upgraded, but changed my mind (want clean install, help!)

You should have an upgrade file on your desktop, click on that, it asks some questions and one of them is do you want to install later say yes, then another question do you want to create an ISO file just say yes, when it has created the ISO file, right click on it to burn it to a DVD.
Then boot from that to completely wipe your disk and reformat, make sure you have your key for when you start the installation. If you have a Windows Live account use that. Make sure you feel comfortable doing this and have anything you need backed up, this worked for me, I hope it works for you.

Ok, i've been doing some searching and it seems like my problem is a little unique. I was running Vista 32 bit last year with 2 gigs of ram. I upgraded to 7 pro 64 bit because i knew i was going to be upgrading to 4 gigs eventually. I bought the 4 gigs and installed them. I restarted my computer and the system picked them up. I don't think there was any issues as much as i can remember. Everything was up to date.

I recently had to do a clean install on my system. When i did this, my computer seems to only recognize 2 gigs of ram again, like i never upgraded before. I still have them in there, took them out, swapped them, and it still is showing 2 gigs in my computer as well as the BIOS. The Bios is updated, so i don't know what to do. Thanks to anyone who can help me.

Answer:Clean Install doesn't recognize Upgraded Ram

Try one stick at a time, trying one slot at a time. Then do the same with the other stick. If the result is that one or the other sticks does not work in one or neither slot, you could have a bad slot or a bad stick, depending on result.

Sounds like its loading a driver which is causing an issue or you may have some bad ram. It could also possibly be many other issues such as the mobo being faulty.

Have you tested the RAM with memtest?

Maybe try install with bare minimum components?

The quick version: IR receiver fails auto install on two Windows 7 PC's upgraded/built from retail upgrade DVD(s). Installs with no issue on PC's pre-loaded with Windows 7 from OEM (Toshiba, HP, etc).

The long version: I have the Pinnalce USB Remote Kit, and it worked great on my Vista x64 HP Slimline, bought just to be a HTPC. I upgraded it last year to Windows 7 via DVD purchased from Amazon, and it continued to work. At some point - not sure when - it became nearly unresponsive, and about 1 out of every 10 key presses would do something, and usually the wrong command. As an example, if using the remote to search through MC music, hitting the right arrow key 20 times may result in it putting "#6*" on the screen, showing it was interpreting the key presses incorrectly. The red light in the receiver would also randomly blink, when no other IR activity was present. I plugged it into my Toshiba Win7 x32 laptop, and it worked perfectly, so I knew the device was fine, it was a problem on my PC. I assumed it was something my daughter had done, and put off messing with it for a while.

When I finally got back to it, I couldn't find anyway to diagnose what was going on, so I started doing system restores back as far as I had them. Nothing fixed it, so I figured the new build I wanted to do in the future would take care of whatever had messed it up. The current hard drive started to fail, so I bought a new hard drive, and used my Win7 x64 upgrade DVD t... Read more

Answer:IR receiver install fails on Win7 upgraded PCs, not OEM

I was having a similar problem with a MCE remote that came with my Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600. When I plugged the IR receiver into a USB port, it would install the driver for the eHome Infrared receiver (USBCIR) as seen in device manager, however the remote did not function at all. The red LED on the receiver would light up when a button was pressed on the remote but there was no response. After contacting Hauppauge customer support and reading a lot of forums I was still at an impasse. My system is running off a clean install using upgrade media of Windows 7. I started snooping around in the device manager and stumbled upon the Action>Install Legacy Hardware menu. Choose 'install hardware manually from a list,' then 'show all devices.' Scroll down in the manufacturer list and choose the first instance of Microsoft. Choose 'consumer IR devices" from the list on the right and finish the wizard. It should install the correct HID and Keyboard drivers to let your IR receiver work properly. Good luck!

Dear All!I clean-install windows 7 pro x64 for my laptop with 4GB ram. Before install VGA driver, windows report it has 4GB installed and 3.9GB useable(switchable) or 4GB usable(only ATI HD3470). After I install VGA driver and reboot, windows report it has 4GB installed and  2.49GB usable(switchable) or 2.99GB(only ATI HD3470). It's terriable ! Anyones help me about this problem Please view my images for more info.http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l39/hoangnhat1613/x64-gp.jpg http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l39/hoangnhat1613/x64.jpg Sorry about my English

Answer:T400(2767-2JU ) cannot use 4GB(Upgraded) of RAM while clean install Windows 7 Pro x64

I have the ati 3650 and don't have any RAM issue.I do loose 1 gb when I use the intel GMA adapter but that's how it works anyway.  Have you checked whether the 3470 uses a bit of RAM to work? it is also possible that your previous version of windows didn't properly report memory usage/allocation, especially if it was a 32bit OS. don't worry, I doubt you lost anything.

Hey guys, just got windows 10 installed on my machine, I upgraded from Vista. I'm happy with it, but I have a quick question:

When I got to the install screen, I decided to install windows without deleting the partion first. This has caused me to have a 700gb folder named 'windows old', that I have to delete.

My original intention was to delete the partion, as it's been about six years since I've reformatted my computer, I wanted to do this to speed up my computer and delete junk. For whatever reason I got confused and didn't do it before installing windows.

Now, if I delete the old windows folder, would that be the same as if I'd of deleted the partion originally? Or will there still be redundant files hanging around somewhere, slowing down my computer? If so I might have to do another windows install, this time deleting the partion. I want to speed my computer up as much as possible you see...

I hope you guys understand my question, and thank you for your time.

Answer:Quick question about a clean install (upgraded from Vista)

Deleting Windows.old does not remove the partition.
You cannot upgrade from Vista to 10 unless you buy your copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft.
The Windows.old folder is there for 30 days only so you can revert to your previous O.S. if you wish to, after that it will automatically be deleted.

HELP!  I am attempting to upgrade my graphics card to my HP Desktop P7-1280t CTO but I am not having any success in getting the CPU to boot and recognize the hardware.  Is there an option in BIOS settings I need to change to get my system to boot with the new hardware?  I have attempted to install the three following, the first two of which were listed on HP's list of configurable options for my specific system when I purchased it in 2012:  1. Radeon HD 7570 (2 GB) - Won't boot to initial HP blue splash/setup screen - screen goes to sleep due to no available source2. Radeon HD 7450 (1 GB) (got the HP-specific version!) - Won't boot to initial HP blue splash/setup screen - screen goes to sleep due to no available source3. GeForce GT 730, (2GB) GDDR5 - Boots to initial HP blue splash/set-up screen and stops - does not respond to any other options from this point. All drivers are current and HP has not released any updates to the BIOS since 2012.  System information: Microsoft Windows 10 Home - Version   10.0.10586 Build 10586x64-based PCIntel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHzBIOS Version/Date           AMI 7.16, 10/5/2011SMBIOS Version                2.6Embedded Controller Version     255.255BIOS Mode          LegacyB... Hello everyone,

First off thank you for being here as I've just performed some major upgrades to my system and was freaking a bit with the BSOD that I'm getting so I hope everyone can help.

Here's the system spec info:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1
AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor
Asus M5A97
8 Gb Kingston Hyper X DDR3 1600
EVGA NVidia GTX 560 Ti
Onboard sound
Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EARS 1TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
Orion 585 W PSU
IN WIN Maelstrom case
3x120mm 1x251mm LED fans

I had tried to overclock the cpu to 3.6Ghz but have now dropped it back down to a 12.5 multiplier to bring it back to the stock 3.0Ghz that it would normally run at but any other help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:BSOD playing BF3, just upgraded MB, RAM, Vid Card and fresh OS install

perfmon report shows USB drivers haven't been installed. Check your mobo manufacturer's website (PC manufacturer if it's a pre-built system) and install chipset drivers (for USB 2.0 and 1.1) and any USB 3.0 drivers that may be necessary.

Remove all overclocking while we troubleshoot. Once the system is stable, then we can resume the overclock.

Only 58 Windows Updates since SP1 - most systems have 70 or more. Check Windows Update for any available updates.

EVGA Precision (same components used in Riva Tuner and MSI Afterburner) is known to cause BSOD's in some Win7 systems. Please uninstall this software immediately.

In the event that this doesn't fix it, post back and we'll start hardware diagnostics.

Hi all,

I figure this will be an easy one, but I just wanted to double check as there seems to be a lot of 95% complete info out there lol. Basically I was using the windows 10 preview long before windows 10 dropped and have kept using it and providing feedback since. I would now like to do an erase and reinstall on the drive with just a drag and drop back up restore - so I can be sure I'm providing accurate feedback on a clean install.

I just want to make sure I'm doing it the right way and not risking this finikity update licence they issued for windows 8 users. Am I right in thinking I just download the install tool from the insider program page, wipe my drive and away I go? or might this cause problems with my update licence?

Thanks in advance

Jeff

Answer:Clean install of windows 10 preview on a computer upgraded from 8.1

First - a drag and drop back up restore is not a clean install. It is a restoration of a previously installed operating system. Second, what does you current activation screen say? Does it say it is activated with a digital license or entitlement? If it says digital license or entitlement than you are good to go to do a real clean install by booting from a Windows 10 installation USB flash drive or DVD, wiping the hard drive, and installing Windows 10 to the unallocated space.

If the Windows 10 setup asks for a product key, click the option to skip it. As long as you install the same version of Windows 10 to the same computer, it will activate automatically when it connects to the internet. If you had plain Windows 10 Home on the computer, then install plain Windows 10 Home. Do not install Single Language Edition. Do not install N edition. Do not install Pro.

So a few months back I upgraded for free from win7 to win10 Pro. Today I got a new CPU, RAM, MBO (also currently using the new MBO onboard GPU, waiting for my new one) and did a clean install of Win10 (from USB created with MediaCreationToolkit). Now I remember reading somewhere about steps to activate Windows 10 after hardware change, but can't seem to find it anywhere, so thought I'd ask here.
The error I'm getting: 0x004C003 The activation server determined the specified product key is blocked.

The thing is I need to get this PC up to my needs fast, and this doesn't cope well with that...

Thanks for the help!

Answer:Windows 10 clean install not activated (Hardware upgraded)

Hi marq020, welcome to Ten Forums. Windows 10 is a free upgrade from win 7. What you did is basically install it fresh on a new computer. If you have a full retail version of win 7 install that first and then upgrade. If you have a OEM version that came on your system then you are probably out of luck. European laws are different so there might be a way around it that I don't know about.

Hey guys. this is my first post. I hope to also start helping others soon as I have been helping friends and family. I need to learn Hijack This though and get back up to date with current technology.

I just upgraded a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop and did a fresh install of Windows XP Home for a friend. The hardware upgrades were a 60 GB HD to 160 GB HD,and 512 Ram to 2 Gig Ram. The computer reads all the newly installed hardware but runs really slow. I mean everything does like opening, closing and deleting files. It also takes like 35 seconds just to get to the first "LOADING XP" screen. What can the problem be? It wasn't that slow before the upgrades. I haven't used the laptop for about 2 years but I know it's supposed to be faster than what it is because a friend has an identical inspiron that runs faster and it is not upgraded at all.

I think the problem is that I have a temporary AC adapter that can't charge the computer but can power it. Can this be the problem? Perhaps not enough power to the new WD 1600 5400 rpm Hard Drive? The memory is 2 1gig sticks from crucial. I am in the process of ordering an official AC adapter though.

Any Ideas.

Thanks.

I have Tecra M9-185 (PTM91E-0G4045G3) with BIOS Version 1.90 dated 29.02.2008.
It came with 160GB HDD which it's quite old and needs replacement. I would like to upgrade the HDD. I tried to use 750GB HDD but it was not recognized by BIOS.

Is it possible to upgrade the HDD? Is there a limit to the capacity of the new HDD that can be installed?

Answer:Tecra M9-185 - 750GB HDD not recognized

Hi

Of course the HDD can be upgraded.
The notebook supports the SATA controller. From my knowledge the SATA controller is not limited to a special HDD size. Therefore 750GB should be supported too. But it could be possible that the BIOS is not able to handle such size.
Try another SATA HDD with smaller size.

But question: why you don?t choose an SSD drive (250GB)?
I upgraded my Tecra A10 with an 250GB SSD drive and the performance boost is amazing. The unit runs much faster and more quiet

Can anyone help me, It seems that 750GB deleted itself off my E drive while I was watching a video in windows media player.
I ran a demo program to allow me to view files that were "deleted" but I had to pay for them to get recovered, so I thought it was a scam. But it let me view the things I "lost" so now I know there's a way I can get them back, I just need help doing so. I'll be keeping my computer on 24/7 so it doesn't rewrite anything, and I won't download anything else unless requested too, and it will all be on my C drive. Also I will keep my web browsing to a minimum. Please, if anyone could help me that'd be lifesaving! I have so many files I was working on in Adobe Premiere and Photoshop.

Hi, guys,    I just ordered the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB for my W520. My main goal is to decrease boot time, and this hybrid approach hopefully will do that without the low capacity/high cost of an SSD.    Does anyone have first hand experience with this drive in the W520?                                                                                     ZZ

Answer:Seagate Momentus XT 750GB

I used the 500GB version for a little while in a previous laptop then my W520. The hyrid drives in general provide a small increase in speed and decreased boot time, the 750GB version I think is better than the 500 GB one. I prefer dual drives SSD+HDD, it gives a much more noticeable improvement.

4GB for memory is more than enough for normal operation, you will find a SSD very useful and I prefer Crucial MX100 256GB which has MLC nand and suggest avoiding any brand with TLC nand.

I have a T61 6459 CTO that had XP SP3 on it. I upgraded to WIndows 7. I tried to install TVTVRNR450_025en, but I get an error msg "Rescue and Recovery does not support installing from the Operating System which upgrade from a legacy pre-load system." I tried deleting all old RNR and CSS programs in the old files after the install, but nothing seems to work. There is nothing listed in my add/remove programs. My Thinkvantage button doesn't work. How do I remove the old RNR? Should I have done that prior to installing Windows 7? Do I need to re-install my XP backup and start over? My Bios update extracts, but doesn't install. Help!

Answer:T61 upgraded to Windows 7, now can't install Rescue and Recovery or Bios update.

Hi, FSURN82

I did some research and was able to find this thread from Lenovo Forums. There are a few other people having similar issues. For some, installing an older version of Rescue and Recovery (sometimes even the one for their OS before the upgrade) would work fine. For some, however, they could not get it to work, so they would create backups manually using Windows.

As for the BIOS issue, what version are you currently running and to what version are you trying to upgrade?

Thanks,
Adam

Hello community,
I recently bough a Sandisk SSD to upgrade my XPS 15 - L502X
The disk is recognized properly in the BIOS (A12), SATA operation is set to AHCI.
I prepared the SSD as described on sandisk KB and i can use that disk when i use a SATA to USB adapter as an external drive (i can copy files on it)
Unfortunately, i cannot install any Windows on it (i tried Windows 10, then tried Windows 7). It ends with differents errors.
Sometimes the install process just get stucked.
Sometimes the install process goes very fast without any issue but i got a "A disk read error occurred" at startup.
Few times, i got the Windows 10 blue screen at startup telling me that there was an I/O error.
Is there anyone having an idea if i am missing something to get it work?

Thank you very much
To.

I was running Win7 off of a 64gig SSD. It was full and I knew I should upgrade it before I went to Win10 so I used a cloning tool to clone the C drive and hidden partition to a new 240gig SSD. I removed the old drive and restarted. Everything seemed fine and the system booted (at first) from the new ssd correctly and allowed me to login. At this point I tried to run the Windows 10 upgrade from a DVD I had burned using the tool.

This is where things started going wrong...

Everything was fine until the point in the installation where it rebooted the first time. When I came back a bit later I was back at my Windows 7 login screen and the system had rolled back. When I rebooted again I was faced with this screen:

I hit enter and was treated to an identical screen saying the same thing only full width (the first one was smaller and did not fill up the whole monitor). After hitting enter a second time I was greeted with a screen asking me to Reboot and select proper Boot Device and would go no further.

I finally took a video of the process and it is below:
http://www.straightarrowhosting.net/...p/IMG_0587.MOV

If I plug the old 64gig drive back into the chain then I can boot but I still have to go through those screens. If I unplug the old 64gig drive then I can't do anything.

When I got in after reconnecting the old drive I went to the disk management window and took this screenshot
It looks like I apparently have two boot partitions on my system and I don't kno... Read more

Answer:Upgraded HD Prior to Win10 Install now getting upgrade and boot errors

It also looks like you have the OS on one drive and all the programs on the other! That plus two more drives present are equaling the same problematic situation I ran into on the 29th! The two NON OS drives first need to be unplugged and the removal of the first 64gb drive saved the day as far as having an OS to work with.

The reason for the dual MBRs and temp install folders which you will find on the wrong drives is how the 10 installer works a little differently then with previous versions. The installer tends get confused as to where to put things and ends up failing with a return to the previous version's desktop after first hanging up upon the first restart and just getting past that new logo screen and all of a sudden... Nothing but a blank screen where then you have to hard boot in order to get back to the old version's desktop.

Been there done that several times! Once I read through the clean install guide the caution of "unplugging" and non OS drives hit home fast since I had a matching pair of drives in an array where I found the missing $Windows~BT and $Windows~WS folders on one of the two and the other saw the boot files placed there! "Goober Alert"!

One thing you could use there is an OS drive with a single primary even if it sees the tiny System Reserved partition not the 3.73gb seen on the 64gb SSD unavailable. What was done here with four drives involved was 1) putting a temp install of 7 on a second OS drive and allowed that to be upgr... Read more

I would suggest checking that write caching is still enabled

Widows WEI is not very accurate You might be happier testing both discs with ATTO or HD Tune

Im running XP SP3. I have a ton of data on this 750gb external hd:

WD ELEMENTS 750 GB external hard drive NEW IN RETAIL BX - eBay (item 220350129875 end time Feb-22-09 21:45:31 PST)

Its hard to find any info on this model. I was converting a mkv file to a mp4 using XenonMKV on the external and about 10 minutes into it the blue light was flashing on the externals case and it sounded like a clicking noice (how it does when a CD players laser gets stuck). The only way to get it to stop it was to shut down the computer.

When i started it back up, the hd wasn't recognized or being mounted as a drive anymore so its not showing up in "My Computer". When I look for the drive in device manager, it only shows up as "WD". Ive tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall it but that didnt work. Ive also tried other USB inputs and other computers, and the 360 and nothing will recognize it.

When I listen to the external when i plug it in, (there is no on/off switch, just usb and power plug) I hear it starting to spin, attempting that 3 times, then stopping all together.

Ive used a program called testdisk-6.10.win to try to repair the partition table because in my researching, Ive found that others have had this problem and that fixed it. That program says that if it recognizes it but it recognizes the wrong size, then the repair wont work effectively. Well thats exactly what happened. It recognized it as a 2TB hdd when its only 750gb.

I have about 60... Read more

Clicking sounds are not good? Have you tried putting it in the freezer for a few hours? Keeping in mind if it works you will only get a few hours out of it so just use the time to back up data.

Hi everyone,

I want to increase to size of the HDD in my satellite L30-11E Laptop from existing 120go to 750go (seagate momentum).

I haze updated the BIOS firmware to the latest version (on Toshiba site : V 3.1).
when I boot a press at the same time the F2 button, I can access the BIOS which shows the HDD. However, when I try to go further and boot on the installation disk of Windows 7, nothing happens (though it does start when I put back the original 120Go HDD).

I have another HDD of 320 Go (also Sata II) that works well.
So it doesn't seem to be a Sata issue, but more a size issue ?
Any clue of what it could be ?
if it is a size issue, how can I solve my pb ?

thanks a lot in advance for any help you could give me

I believe there is compatibility problem. Maybe you should not go overboard with HDD upgrade.

Buy some HDD with reasonable capacity. Is 400GB not enough for you?
