Preferred Solution: Programs and Features box blank, veiw installed updates box is empty.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Programs and Features box blank, veiw installed updates box is empty.

I think this covers it-

I got a Lenovo Yoga Book, Windows 10 edition. I went to check if there's any pre-installed stuff I don't need, and.... the list of installed programs is actually really short! To the point that it seems wrong:

How can this be? It seems that things have got to be missing here. For example, this computer also has the standard "Intel HD Graphics" control software (accessible via system tray). Surely that program had to have been installed in order to be there, right? So how can it be absent from this list?

Edit: Just thought of another example: there's a "Realtek HD Audio Manager" software, also accessible from system tray. Again, how can it be absent from this list?

Some (3, out of maybe 20) of my installed Programs, all working perfectly well, are not listed in Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

Any ideas on how to rectify this, please?

Thank you.

Answer:Some installed Programs not listed in Programs and Features...

Some programs do not really "Install" by using normal installation process by writing entries in the Registry and so don't show up as uninstallable. "Portable programs" are an example. If they don't have Uninstall.exe (or similar file) in it's folder, you can just delete folder and shortcut.

Hi again,

This is regarding my Desktop Computer. No make/model

Windows XP Home SP3.

Everything was going well until one day when I decided I wanted to be able to post on a Japanese website. I don't have the ability to read/write in Japanese because I never installed that language thing on my computer. So I pulled out the Windows Home CD and popped it in the computer. I followed instructions online and viola! Japanese characters now show up on webpages.

And then the darkness fell. Somehow "calc" is no longer found on my computer. Goodbye calculator. Also, my Sound Volume Control is gone. When I go to Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, I can no longer click ADVANCED in Device Volume to have those nifty volume bars displayed. In addition, whenever I try to open up a document, it says something about installing Windows it says something about installing windows professional office publisher something something even though the document is .doc .

I don't understand how I could have done all of this. Ideas?

Thank you again in advance.

Many of the applications in my Programs and Features have installed dates that change to the current date maybe once a month. For example, on 3/21/2014, at least 30 applications' Installed On date changed to 3/21/2014. I noticed some of the applications have missing icons as well. I think this has something to do with the fact that we had to change our domain server at work, and I had to create a new domain profile and try to migrate everything over. Any ideas why this is still happening?

I have tried several things and have searched for quite a long time for solutions, but to no avail. The things i've tried include; everything in the following - FIX Blank or Empty List in Vista Turn Windows Features On or Off (OptionalFeatures.exe), sfc /scannow, reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty, and making sure Windows Modules Installer is running and set to manual. I'd appreciate any help and suggestions, thanks!

Answer:Programs and Features missing installed date column

Hi Xirw If you right-click on the columns, you should have a context menu displaying various column names and whether they are enabled (checked) or not (not checked). Just check the "Installed date" in that menu and the column will appear.

Hi, I hope someone can help. i went to uninstall a program via programs and features and noticed that the list and icons only showed 8 programs installed ,i'm certain there is normally around 70-80.

Everything appears to function as before so i assume the programmes are there hidden somewhere and not uninstalled.

Has anyone come across this before?. i'm running windows 8.1 32 Bit.

I am having an issue with Windows Programs and Features reporting incorrect software versions from what is actually installed. One example is MS Visio 2007 is reporting in programs and Features as version 12.0.6425.1000 while Visio itself is reporting 12.0.6536.5000. This is causing issues with reporting software usage in our organization. Also this is not only affecting Windows 7 users, but also Windows XP users.

When installing applications they appear to install correctly. An icon is created on the desktop and I can access the program.

In control panel under programs and features... the application is not showing up. I cannot uninstall the programs, because they aren't showing in programs and features to uninstall.

Yes, workarounds can be used to delete the program, but there is something wrong. The programs are not installing properly.

I ran sfc/ scannow as admin no problems indicated
After a couple hours messing with this:

Thought I should add this... When I right click on the installer/setup exe file and select to run as administrator the installer works and does show up in programs and features... Also, I can delete the program as well from programs and features.

I have never had to do this before even though I am admin...(in name mostly) unless I am willing to allow more vulnerability to my system by turning on all the time. Still having to run as admin does seem a bit much for installing programs. The worst part...the installer will run, installs the program, yet leaves off the ability to uninstall or change in the programs and features page of control panel

Answer:application installed doesn't show control panel - programs & features

Have a look at this MS website & see if there is anything there to help you. There are some links you can follow & there is a "fixit" there as well in one of those links.
Injudicious & over use of registry cleaners is one of the causes.

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help here. My brother moved from England to Turkey a couple of years ago and his Laptop that was from the UK is beyond repair so he bought one in Turkey, A Toshiba Satellite A350-212, and is having problems with downloads. He for example downloaded a free trial of Coverxp and it seemed to download ok and was asked if he wanted a desktop shortcut. He said yes to the shortcut and as i say it seemed to have installed ok.

The desktop iicon never appeared and the Coverxp in All programs shows as empty.
This is the case for most of the things he has downloaded, such as the free trial of Winrar.
In Programs and features Uninstall, the applications are there. I feel this could be a security problem.

All the things he has tried installing i have installed on Vista with no problem

If anyone can help with information ill be most gratefull

Thanks.

Answer:Installed programs show as empty on Satellite A350-212

Hi mate

First of all I don?t think it?s a Toshiba problem.
I recommend you to save the downloaded packages somewhere on second partition.
Then go to this partition and unzip this package.
Then follow the installation instruction.

By the way; the shortcuts on desktop can be created manually.
Simply right click on desktop and create new shortcut and point to the exe file of the installed software,

When i right click and select open it says "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" although when i click continue i can access it so it seems it might be security related...

Hello Techies,

I've had my plotter hooked up to my PC (Windows XP SP3) for 5 years without incident, and recently plotted out patterns with it. I tried to plot today and my pattern software and the plotter control center both gave me an error message stating that "The selected port is being used by another application"

I've checked all connections, the plotter is indeed connected to port 4 as it should be, the plotter and the pattern software are configured correctly, all have power.

I tried to find the com port by looking in My computer, Device Manager, Port, but it's only showing my printer LPT port. How can I find the com ports so that I can see what is assigned to them and if they might be in need of repair? Since they are not showing up in the Device Manager, does this mean that Windows can't find them?

I'm stumped and am hoping that someone can help me...

Thanks!
Ana

PS I just ran a Belarc scan and the CyberPro PCI I/O serial port card doesn't show up under any of the titles of data (devices, software etc)

Answer:Solved: how can i veiw the installed ports and see which device it assigns to?

Hello, I've been brought to my wits end with this problem and have decided to turn to someone else for help. Forgive me for requesting help so close to the holidays.

I've been away from home for school for quite a while now, and over the last few weeks my dad kept calling me saying his computer was acting strange, including the always lovely Windows antivirus 2009 constantly popping up. After some work on my side over gotomyPC, i was able to get rid of that, but there still seems to be something hanging around. Through the entire time getting rid of antivirus 2009 i was unable to open antivirus/malware programs like Spybot search and destroy or malwarebytes. Since i couldn't try while offline i just told him to wait until i got home.

Now that i'm here in in front of it(typing from mine though), i cut off the wireless and tried things again. I still can't open any of these programs, run the installers, or go to any sites that have anything to do with antivirus(including online scans like kaspersky). Anyways, before i keep rambling, here is the Hijackthis log:

Dear Tech Support:

This anomaly has been around a while on my computer which is a Compaq Presario (not that it matters much). I don't know when it started but I know this isn't right. What would cause the add/remove program list to have these garbage images embedded? In this case, the garbage is several scroll bars in length.

See the screen captures below. What is this stuff and how do I get rid of it?

Pretty messed up, huh?

Click on the CCleaner link below in my sig area and install. Then run CCleaner and click on tools - left side. A list of installed programs will appear. See if the ones in question are there and delete them.

how to retrieve lost programs after Microsoft updates deleted them lost sony pictures programs and Spanish language software ( both purchased )

Answer:programs lost after microsoft updates installed

You didn't keep backup copies of the installation packages for your purchased software?Very unwise indeed. Maybe only the application shortcuts were deleted, so have a look in the relevant folders in Windows Explorer. See if there is a Sony folder containing the application's executable file, and same for the Spanish Language software (in a different folder of course).

Running my Add/Remove programs utility and ticking to include updates in the listing, I have lots of downloaded updates that have been successfully installed but are still sitting there. They include updates for XP, .net, security and Office. As they have been installed, is it safe to delete them now or should I store them somewhere?

Answer:Safe to remove MS Updates Programs once installed?

Don't remove them using the Add/Remove as that will remove the update and reset the PC to its prior condition, Their presence in the Add/remove is really to enable you to delete an update, should it prove buggy or incompatible.Simple option is to untick the Show Updates box and ignore them, but if you're happy the update is stable and want to clear the backup file and associated undeleter then try click here Remove Hotfix backup.

Yes, it's empty. You can right click on Name or Publisher (or any detail category for that matter) and add/remove details, just like you do for normal folders.

Hi. Not sure this is the right forum...if not I apologize. I have a new (2-weeks) HP computer with Windows 8.1 installed. I have tried to install two programs via CD, both successfully. However, when the new programs check for updates (both say there is one available), I get a message that the update was not successful, as I am not the administrator.
This is baffling, as I am the only user, and when I check, Windows shows me logged in as Administrator. (There are no other user accounts active at all).
I asked for user help for one of the programs thru their website, and they had me doing all kinds of different things: Clean Boot, "manually" download and install their update, etc., but nothing works. They, too, are baffled. Now they want me to create a separate "user account," and try that. But a "user" is not "administrator," and if it doesn't recognize me as administrator, it sure won't recognize an administrator in a user account.
I thought all this was the program/website fault, but when the same thing happened when I installed the second program, it got me to worrying that maybe there's something "off" in Windows 8.1.
Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
PS....I hesitate to post the names of the companies involved, or the software I'm installing, but I will if you all think it is OK. Both are fairly well-known companies; not fly-by-nights.

Answer:Unable to download updates to newly installed programs.

Try right clicking the program and click "Run as Administrator" then try your update.

I was going to update and remove some of the "windows features" that are enabled under Vista, but when the display box comes up, it is empty. I have tried to use the Microsoft KB931712 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712) solution, but it tells me that it cannot delete the registry entry because it does not exist.

Has anyone had any luck with any other solutions to make it work (short of either paying Microsoft or reinstalling the OS)?

Thanks.

Answer:Windows Features Has Empty Box

If the registry key doesn't exist, try creating it. BUT - there are several sub-keys beneath it, so this may not work for you - I'd suggest backing up your registry before trying this!!!

Hi. When I go into windows features (Optionalfeatures.exe) the window that comes up is empty ? Just, please wait, then nothing ? Is there anyone who can spread some light on this problem. Anyone else experiencing this ? Is it a known bug ? I have read on other forums about this issue, but unfortunately no solution. I am running Vista Home Premium. I'm familiar with the http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/931712, but it did not solve my problem cause the regvalue don't exist. I've no problem installing updates from windows update. I've posted about this on several forums, trying to find a solution without having to reinstall my OS.Enncee

Answer:Windows Features Empty In Vista ?

How long have you waited? I just had to wait about 30 seconds and I use this feature frequently - I'd suspect that with only occasional use it'd take longer. If not this, then what other "tweaks" have you installed on your system - I'd suspect that one of them is interfering with the program. Viewing optionalfeatures.exe in Process Explore (free here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...ssExplorer.mspx ) doesn't show any unusual associations (all I get is msvcrt.dll, RPCRT4.dll, and ole32.dll in the Threads tab).

I tried to post this on Windows Newsgroups, Vista General Discussion, but it seems to be broken. There has not been a new post in 14 hours.

Anyway, I have Vista Home premium on a desktop

When I open "Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off" the list is empty. It momentarily says "Please Wait...", then never populates the list.

I read that it may have something to do with Windows Updates errors, so I checked my history. I found 9 failed ones from 10-15 and 10-14. I went to the windows download site and tried to manually install them. Every one I tried ended with a message: "This update does not apply to your machine." I didn't bother to try a couple of them since I do not use Windows mail. Maybe that had nothing to do with it. The problem persists.

I ran sfc /scannow and after completion it said corrupt files were found but was unable to fix some of them. I don't have a Vista CD but I do have all of the recovery disks I made when it was new, however I'm not sure how to proceed.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks,
Rusty

Hello, I would be grateful if anyone can help with this query.

On 1 June 2013 I took my pc back to Factory Settings and did a clean install of Windows installing all the relevant important updates for Vista. My pc is now up-to-date but one thing puzzles me. My list of installed updates lists a significant number of updates installed in 2008. (Two installed on 21/01/2008 and 39 from 21/10/2008). I would have expected that all updates listed would have an installation date on or after 1 June 2013.

I would be grateful if someone could explain this for me.

Answer:Why do my installed updates list updates installed prior to date of clean install

Welcome
One important question, when did you buy the computer?
Was it after the installation date that shows, now?

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove Snap.do and some other unwanted programs. I managed to get them off, I beleive. I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me Snap.do was back. I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked. Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and Snap.do wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.
I ran malware bytes and nothing too bad was found. I ran Superantispyware and it reported regcleaner pro, Advanced Sysrem Protector and AppsHat Mobile Apps were installed. I let the Super antispyware try to remove them and also cleaned out some tracking cookies. I cehcked programs and the 3 weren't there. Re-running Super antispyware however keeps reporting they're in my system.
Any ideas? Was my original removal not successful? Can these apps hide?

Hello all,

I am having this little problem where I install updates via Windows Update and all the downloads are downloaded and installed fine, but when I go to Add/Remove programs and go to the "View Installed Updates" section to uninstall an update, it's all blank.

Answer:Windows 7 Pro "installed updates" blank

I have downloaded probably 4 or 5 different updates since I finished installing the Win 7 Pro x64 pack from MSNDAA and when I go to the Add/Remove Programs -> View Installed Updates I only have one present. Might be only showing significant updates and not small patches.

Almost all of the programs in the programs and features list in the control panel are gone. the programs are still there in the start menu and can be opened. But I can not open pdf files on my desktop anymore, I would uninstall adobe and reinstall it but it isn't in the list to remove it. Thanks for the help.

A family member was tricked in to downloading and installing some stuff from the Internet on to a laptop that has Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit with Media Center. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff that was installed or if these problems existed earlier.

In Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, not all installed programs are listed. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letters Mi.. or Mo.. Only 14 programs are listed. In Start menu, All Programs, I think some programs are missing. The list seems unusually short. The laptop has a Win 7 style Start menu because IObit's Start Menu 8 program is installed. In Control Panel, System and Security, Administrative Tools, there were no shortcuts to the tools. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date but that didn't bring back the missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues.

I guess the missing programs could be the result of malware. I don't remember exactly what I removed. I only used the free version of MBAM to clean up. I tried restoring everything MBAM quarantined but that didn't help. I requarantined the stuff. It was mostly, if not all, PUPs.

Any ideas for bringing back the programs that should be in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu?

Answer:Missing some Programs in Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) Menu

I gave up. I restored the operating system and reinstalled everything. No problems now so I guess the problems of missing programs and BitDefender not working was caused by the malware/PUPs- a buggy installer.

I have Windows 7 Prof x64.

My question is, when displaing all software installed and choosing more columns of information to display, they don't stay. For example, choosing Location column. Getting out of the installed programs list and then returning to it, the Location column is gone.

Is there some what to get the columns to be persistent?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Question about Windows 7 Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features

The Programs and Features listing is shown to you by the Explorer app. Each time that you open/close the Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a folder (or a special view/list like the Programs and Features listing), Explorer tries to write info to the registry about how Explorer was showing you that folder. Windows (file) Explorer tries to write this "how to display a folder" info at other times besides just closing an Explorer window, but I'll not go into all of that.

Microsoft has not solved the problem that happens when these places in the registry get too big. When this happens, you may see the problem that you are experiencing - that of no longer being able to store the layout/view/column width/column selection/... info in the registry.

Below is video that I made showing registry keys being made. (I'm not suggesting that you mess with the registry.) Notice that new keys are made when visiting the folder named Temp. Deleting this Temp folder does not remove those registry keys. If you close Windows (file) Explorer while viewing a compressed folder (a ZIP file), the Explorer app tries to make keys so that it can remember how it last showed you that folder. If you delete or move that ZIP folder to another location, the original registry keys remain. So you can see how this area of the registry can fill up.

edit: I had to make this video again. I hope that I covered all of the original points.

One solution is to remove all of the entries/keys in the areas of ... Read more

I recently opened up my uninstall list and a lot of my programs are missing i tried restoring my computer to before i downloaded quick time (which i think is what the issue was) but the restore came up with an error 0xc0000022 saying it failed to restore, i tried an sfc scan and it came up with something being corrupt that would be fixed on restart, i restarted and tried to restore again but it still did not work.

I have uninstalled quick-time already but the problem is still there, also my antivirus picked up root-kit in hamachi so i uninstalled that and did a full system scan from boot with avast, i haven't tried restoring again in case i lose any progress or the virus is restored.

So basically i have two problems: Programs missing from my programs and features list, and System restore not working 0xc0000022

I know i should do something with the CBS log to check but ill leave that for you guys to decide, thanks for the help.

Answer:programs missing from programs and features, recovery failed 0xc000002

Download and run Revo Uninstaller for the missing programs.

As far as your rootkit, simply removing the program doesn't remove the malware. Run a scan with Malwarebytes anti-Rootkit, then run Malwarebytes standard and then run Eusing to clean up the entry points of your virus.

Also, go into your AppData directory and clean out all the Temp files in there. Delete them for all user accounts on the machine:

C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Local\Temp for example.

Hi guys, hope you can help me with this please because I don?t really know what to do to solve it.

I have a Vaio running Windows 8.1. but coming with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have recently noticed that most of the programs and apps (Adobe, Realtek, Sony folder, Intel, Avast, Java, Bluetooth?) on Programs and Features (Uninstall a Program) have vanished without knowing how. Only Microsoft apps are displayed there for some reason.

First, I run sfc /scannow and found some corrupted files that could not be fixed, so I decided to perform a full recovery (through Vaio Care that makes use of the Recovery partition) that restores the system to factory settings. After recovery, all programs and apps were in Programs and Features as expected. However, after removing either the preinstalled version of MS Office 2013 or the preinstalled games, most programs and apps disappeared again. I run again sfc /scannow, Avast and Malwarebytes and they found no issues at all. I also tried System Restore, but it did not fix anything. Only MS Office 2013, Avast and Malwarebytes are currently installed on the drive, along with Windows automatic updates (including Windows 8.1), and I have not used any ?cleaner? or ?optimizer? tools.

I found a potential cause for this. Apparently, the uninstaller for a program can incorrectly remove registry entries that are used by Windows and the Add/Remove Programs tool (Add/Remove Programs tool displays installed programs incorrectly), but I am not sure whether... Read more

Just noticed when I was about to upgrade one of my applications by starting to uninstall the current version that it wasn't no longer in the list of installed programs and lots of other programs are gone too.

Did some Google searching for this problem and noticed I was far from the only one who experienced this issue but unfortunately I wasn't able to find any real solution.

My Windows version is 1511 build 10586.420. I already tried running sfc /scannow and it came out with no errors found.

Any ideas what happened and how to fix it?

Answer:Lots of programs are missing from the Programs & Features list

Programs or Apps? I ask because Apps from the App store don't show up in Programs and features. They are in Settings > System > Apps & Features. What is the name of this software?

EDIT: I'm noticing some items in that list I wouldn't have called Apps? Some of my Steam Games, NVidia drivers for audio and video? My guess is eventually they will all show up in Apps & features.

Hi,
I wonder if someone can help me. I posted on the microsoft support pages but nobody could help me and directed me here.

A few weeks back i accidentally downloaded a program that wasn't from a reliable source, which in turn downloaded a bunch of junk on my computer. It was stupid of me, i'm usually really careful!
I managed to get in and remove most of them, but then all of a sudden all but a few of my programs completely disappeared from Programs and features. Flash Player, Google Chrome, Firefox and a few other programs were the only ones hat remained. The major programs that were missing from the list are still working fine from what i can see, but i didn't get the chance to remove a few items of adware and they are still active on my computer and being as irritating as an STI (i'd imagine...)
On searching online how to remove these parasites, most of the sites suggest uninstalling from Programs and Features, which i can't do because they aren't on the list! All other suggestions have not worked!
I have tried going into safe mode (with and without networking) and setting up another user profile with admin but the list stays the same.
I can't remember the last time i backed up (Months ago i presume)
This morning i did a scan on cmd (sfc /scan ??) and came back saying "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"
I have tried various tools to try moving the adware: YAC, Cloud System Booster, (i've uninstalled some others i've used so can't remembe... Read more

So I'm trying to uninstall some stuff, and Programs and Features from Control Panel is mostly blank. It seems to think that on my 500gb hard drive, which only has 50gb free space, that I only have 22 programs, occupying a space of half a gb. But there's a twist: this goes deeper than Windows being crappy, because Revo Uninstaller Pro says the exact same thing. So yeah....you might have gathered from the above info that I need to uninstall some things...
Thanks in advance.

Answer:[SOLVED] programs and features not listing all programs

Edit: I should probably read the sticky BEFORE posting.

- Version of the OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x86
- If the OS produces an error: no error
- Were there recent crashes that could have caused this problem?: no
- Did you install new software recently? If this is the case: Which software? (Brand, version, build): Yes, lots....don't remember it all and can't check for obvious reasons.
- Did you do any of the following:
- Run a scan with an updated anti-virus program?
- Run a scan with an updated anti-Trojan program?
- Run a scan with an updated root kit detection program? (This only for Windows NT, W2K and newer!)
- Run anti-spyware scans with at least two freshly updated anti-spyware programs? (If so, which ones?): I have nod32 (legit)...'nuff said.

Don't think you need any other info.

Just noticed that most of the programs have vanished in programs and features (control panel). I have around 90 installed programs. The ones that have vanished still work from the quick launch bar but they have also disappeared from the start menu. Have tried a system restore to the only restore point that was available but it didn't change anything.
The programs that are there are in alphabetical order from Mi to Mo
I updated filezilla yesterday and that reappeared in the programs and features list.

Answer:Most programs vanished from programs and features in contr

Hi Trevor,

Recently I noticed the same problem on a Windows 8.1 Samsung laptop when I was trying to remove some junk programs that came from the Internet. The only programs listed in the laptop's Programs and Features menu have names that start with Mi or Mo. Plus, some programs are missing from the Start -> All Programs menu. Microsoft's System Restore didn't help me. Check if Administrative Tools is empty on your computer, too. It was empty on the laptop I am working on. I fixed that by opening a command prompt as Administrator and using the command SFC /SCANNOW. That didn't bring back the missing programs in Programs and Features but that fixed the missing shortcuts in Administrative Tools and may have fixed a couple other issues I didn't know about.

Hi all,

really stumped on this one

device is a windows 10 surface tablet (LTSB), that was working fine on a domain. Linked to a WSUS, and has sccm installed.

I went into windows turn windows features on and off and enabled asp.net 4.5 or was it 4.6 and rebooted, now powershell does not work, certain application that require .net do not load. It complaining that .net is not installed, and when I try installing .net 3.5 and even 4.6 it says its already installed but turned off in windows features.

its happened twice now, the first time was when trying to install visual studio community. I got the tablet wiped/reimaged and put back on the corporate network. and Its happened again.

Can't even load gpedit, well it loads but then complains about mmc snap in when going into configuration

any suggestion? i've done all the dism, sfc/scannow stuff. it came up with corruption but thats all repaired now

help!!!

really stumped on this one

device is a windows 10 surface tablet (LTSB), that was working fine on a domain.

Can't even load gpedit, well it loads but then complains about mmc snap in when going into configuration

any suggestion? i've done all the dism, sfc/scannow stuff. it came up with corruption but thats all repaired now

help!!!

Answer:Turn on/off features blank

just for anyone else's record

the only way to fix this is to get the same build iso, and do an "upgrade"
this repairs the corruption.

what an absolute pain!

Hello, everytime I would open Turn Windows Features On or Off it would say "Please Wait" for a few seconds and then everything would be white. I tried sfc /scannow and it couldn't fix it, I tried dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and it said it didn't have a source even though it was meant to use Windows Updates.

Hi, I guess your question is 'Can you help me fix this?'

Could you tell us what your Windows build is please?

Before I start, I did a search here and found this:

I tried to follow the directions, but nothing worked.

As stated above, when I click the "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off" link, a small windows opens and at first says "Please wait..." ... so I do. When the "Please wait..." disappears, the window remains blank.

I was not sure where to post this so please PM me if it is moved so I can find it.

Hello! everybody

I have problem with optionalfeatures.exe dialog box it is appear blank I can't see any programs

My OS is windows 7 ultimate x64. I appreciate any help

thank you

Answer:optional features dialog box is blank

Hi

Try the following:

1. Run from an elevated command prompt (type cmd in the start search box and when it shows in the list right click and run as administrator) then type sfc /scannow

2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712

Also does Windows Update work still and find updates, you should have dailys from Windows Defender, or what was last date of the top update file?

If WU not working then try the built in Troubleshooters and info HERE on this, but basically open up Action Center > click Troubleshooting > make sure the "get the most upto date ......." box is ticked and then click View All, then choose Windows Udpate at the bottom and follow the prompts.

Yeah, the list is just empty after loading.
I've tried running sfc /scannow, system restoring back, I've ran a chkdsk on C:, I created a new admin account to see if it worked, I even tried this command: reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty but still no luck.

Any ideas? :s

You might try useing your Win 7 disk and do a repair install, if that doesn't work then it's time to do a clean install

Tried to activate the Turn Windows Features on or off from Control Panel (going into Programs) but it comes up with a blank box.
Any suggestions as to how to turn the features on please?

Answer:urn Windows Features On Or Off brings up blank box

Reboot, and then try going back to Turn Windows Features on or off, and wait 10 minutes (or an hour) to see if the box stays blank. I just tried it and it said 'please wait' for more than a minute before finally showing the features. If your system is very slow it could take a long time I bet.

I have a Sony VAIO laptop, since I upgraded it form Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, whenever I reboot my computer or it wakes up from sleep mode, I receive a notification indicating,
"Windows is installing new features, it will take few minutes", but after a few minute there is another message, saying
"there was a problem and we were not able to install features". I talked with a Windows technician, he ran Windows Safety Scanner (SFC \scannow) on my computer, which resulted in
not finding any problem and the error notification is still there.
Is there a solution for that and is there a way I be able to check which additional features are added to my OS by Windows and at what date?
Any help to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated because it is getting very annoying.

Hello. I am running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit. After removing PC Optimizer Pro and other stuff that re-directed my IE web browsing programs and features shows only five programs. I have well over 20 programs.
sfc /scannow did see any problems.
In REGEDIT under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall I just see these five programs.

What can I do so I view all of my programs?

Thank you for looking.

Having lost the uninstallers, other than reinstalling the programs, I don't see how you'll get back those registry entries.

I've been on Windows 8 for a couple of months now and have installed a fair amount of programs which previously, as you'd expect, appeared on the Programs and Features list. However, as of yesterday, there are only about 10 programs in the list and I can find specific examples which I can run from the start menu or desktop that do not appear there.

This happened around a similar time to accidentally installing an application called 'TornTV', which a quick google revealed comes with all kinds of adware/spyware. I have since removed this program and run a full virus scan (Norton 360) which found nothing. I am wondering whether it could be related to this but whatever the cause, is there any way I can get the programs back in the list without having to reinstall them all?

Hello, I repair computers and lately I saw a few computers, all running on Windows 7, with missing programs in "Programs and Features" :The programs that are missing in "Programs and Features" could be viewed in the Uninstall function of CCleaner :To clean the computers, and get rid of all the crapware installed, I used Combofix, AdwCleaner and did a full scan with Kaspersky. When I saw that the missing programs didn't reappear, I did a "sfc /scannow", used Tweaking Windows Repair and did, in last resort, a Windows repair using a Windows 7 DVD and choosing "Upgrade" :The programs didn't reappear even after all of this.I know that programs can disappear in "Programs and Features" if the DisplayName value, in the registry, is more then 64 characters long :HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UninstallThe thing is that the entries of the installed programs missing in "Programs and Features" are not in the above paths. How can CCleaner see those programs ?Do you have any ideas ?Thanks,m0t

Hi,

Recently my mom visited a website that tricked her. She downloaded and installed some stuff she didn't need. I removed the stuff but noticed some other problems. I'm not sure if these are new problems caused by the useless stuff she installed.

Control Panel -> Programs -> Programs and Features is not showing all installed programs. Oddly, the only listed installed programs have names that start with the letter M. 14 programs are listed. See picture. Start Menu -> All Programs -> I suspect some programs are missing. I have a Win 7 style Start menu because I am using IObit's Start Menu 8 program. Control Panel -> System and Security -> Administrative Tools was empty. I fixed that by using SFC /SCANNOW.

I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier date, but that didn't work. In the process of trying to do that I discovered that BitDefender Internet Security 2014 doesn't get along with Windows 8.1's System Restore feature. I uninstalled BitDefender and successfully went back to an earlier date but still had the same problems with missing programs. I undid the restore. I created a new Windows user account. The new account had the same issues: missing programs in the Start menu and Programs and Features menu.

Answer:Missing Some Programs in Programs and Features

I gave up. I restored the operating system to like new and reinstalled everything.

I have tried a number of fixes that I found online - sfc /scannow, checksur.exe, system restore, etc. None of them have worked. I think the problem might have been due to a registry clean that I did with ccleaner, but I don't have a system restore or registry backup from before then as I didn't know that it had caused this problem. The log from checksur.exe is below:

Any idea guys?

Hello SoHacked, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You might see if using the Microsoft KB article below for Vista and Windows for this same issue will work for you in Windows 8 as well. The steps are the same in Windows 8, and should still apply.

You receive error code "0x80073712" or the "Windows Features" dialog box is empty when you try to install updates or components in Windows 7 or in Windows Vista
Hope this helps,

While waiting for W7 Ultimate Upgrade to show up in the mail, I have two questions. I think I know the answer to the first one.

Does the installation provide flexibility on what Pro / Ultimate features are installed (or should I say enabled) above and beyond what comes standard with Home Premium? Before posting, I did some searching, and found the following link which includes screen shots. Looks like the answer is "No", at least not that I could find.

http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install.asp

So my next question. I just built a PC and mainly want my Windows 7 experience to be that of Home Premium, except for just a couple of extra features I wanted. That probably doessn't sound so smart, since I paid for ultimate, but I can explain (sort of). So how different are the menu selections etc between Ultimate and Home Premium.

Answer:Control over what features in Ultimate get installed ?

I did a clean install from Vista to 7 and was not offered and selection of features and do not know of anyone who has mentioned this in the forum. So I would say there is not selection. You can enable and disable some after installation.

Hopefuily this answers the second question

1) Print option within system not with 3rd party apps
2) Swype keyboard for more languages
thanks

Answer:Will these features be available on future updates?

For question 1, I really don't know, you could give Feedback via UserVoice - http://windowsphone.uservoice.com
As for the second question that answer is yes, of course MS will keep adding new languages for Swype, again, you could use the Uservoice link to request your language...

I put up a post a few weeks back with the problem that the Windows Features On/Off only displays a blank page.

A fix from Microsoft was to try this:

reg delete HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreDirty

OK, did that but still the same problem.

Now I am getting an error code 80073712 that relates to windows update not working any more. A search on Google reveals that this is also associated to the first problem with the following advice:

SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Windows Vista updates or components, you may experience the following symptoms:• When you try to install an update by using the Windows Update Web site, you receive an error message that includes the following error code:
0x80073712
The update does not install.
• When you click Turn Windows features on or off in the "Programs and Features" Control Panel item, the Windows Features dialog box is empty. No features are shown.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:1. Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, and then click Command Prompt under Programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

Note If you do not have administrator rights and permissions, start the Command Prompt program by right-clicking Command Prompt, clicking Run as administrator, and then typing administrator credentials.
2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
reg delete HKLM\COMPONENT... Read more

Answer:Solved: Updater not working and Windows Features On/Off still blank.

Finally got onto a Microsoft techie in Sydney Australia who advised that yes, this 80073712 error was a "known bug" and no, MS had not as yet come up with a fix for it and that yes, he was aware that the suggested resolution on the MS link did not in fact actually correct the problem and that no, he could not give me any further advice ...... thanks for da money, you are now on your own!

OK, did a fast reinstall of Vista, all well again and problems fixed but what a way to have to solve it!!

Hi. I had a problem recently where my C drive said it was full. I have an Acer so my hard drive is split in two. I transfered all my files (e.g. Word docs, images, videos) to the D drive and left programs and any other files like that on my C drive. Now my C drive for some reason says it is full again. I dunno how it could be, I removed a load of files and programs and moved all documents over and haven't installed or saved anything else to there. But anyway, I decided that I would remove another program or two that I didn't need. I went to programs and features (I'm using Vista) clicked uninstall and it began uninstalling. Suddenly I got a message telling me there was an error and it couldn't install the program. It's done this on more than one program (one from a disk, one I downloaded)so it's not just that I don't have the disk for it so it can't uninstall (as some programs do require that).

As I say it does start to uninstall, but then it seems to change its mind and tries installing. How can I get it to uninstall them as it should? I've never had any problems before and I can't think what could be causing it.

Thanks.

Hi everybody,
I know Microsoft likes to move things around with a new OS release.
They did it in Vista with Add and Remove Programs, changing it to Programs and Features and carried it over
to Win. 7. I found a Registry hack that changed it in Vista. I tried it on WIN 7. and it gave me an error,

"Not all data written, some registry keys still open"
It's on this page under "Control Panel" http://www.techoddity.com/tweak
This is it when I used edit.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Does anyone know if there is one for 7 or how to edit the registry it to change it to Add and Remove
Maybe one of you with Vista can use it. It worked fine when I had Vista.

I understand the need for updates to Windows Ten. But why are they so massive?

I recently installed the Creator's Update 1703. That was something like 5GB. It's only been a few weeks and now I have to update another Creator Update 1709, which is like 4.4GB.

I'm not debating or arguing the NEED for updates. I just want to know why they are so big, especially when there are not that many changes to its aesthetic, and the way one uses its features.

Many users complain about feature 1709, and that they need to roll back to 1703. So why update it at all. Is it really necessary?

In certain instances, windows display as completely empty or blank. I thought it might be a javascript problem based on a couple of KB articles, but neither fixed the problem. It happens for most Norton anti-virus screens, some help screens, and - when I went to see if I could do a rollback to get around the problem - it happened on the Windoes XP (home) Restore Wizard. I'm left contemplating a complete reformat & reinstall from the manufacturer's (Dell) "repair" disk.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Like many Win10 users, I'm getting used to having to reset my file associations occasionally, for example, getting PDF files to open with Acrobat instead of Edge.

Recently I'm seeing some related problems. Sometimes when I right-click a file and select Open with, Windows Explorer crashes. And when I open Apps & Features, it comes up blank.

After running NOD32 and Antimalware, I ran sfc /scannow and DISM, but they didn't find any problems.

To solve these problems, I opened the registry to

COMPUTER\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts. Then I found the troublesome extension and looked at its OpenWithList entries. I found

(1) some entries with exe files that were not on my PC
(2) some entries that made no sense
(3) some entries like abcd

After backing up that section of the registry, I deleted some of the first two types of entries. In most cases, that solved the OpenWith crash. In other cases, I was able to open "Choose default apps by file type" and set the association there.

Sometimes the Registry edits fail to solve the problem, and Apps & Features and Choose default apps... both come up blank.

This has happened on both of my systems, which are very similar but used with different software and devices.

Any idea how this happened or how I can deal with it?

Answer:OpenWith crashes File Explorer, Apps & Features blank

Not everyone is having that issue. Roll it back to before the problem started.

Hello!
I bought a Dell XPS 15 (9550) with Windows 10 and so far everything have been good, except that I keep getting empty updates from the Dell Update-app.
I have installed these empty updates ("0 updates are ready to install") many times but they never stop.

Today, I got this message: "73 updates are ready to install", which got me a bit worried.
What can I do?

Answer:Dell Update - Empty updates "0 updates are ready to install"

I'd suggest you uninstall / reinstall Dell Update. Type Settings onto [Cortana] search box, click on Apps, and then uninstall Dell Update. To reinstall: expand Application in the link below, and then Dell Update.

When installing IE11 over Windows Update again it put out the error Code 9c48.

I wanted to fix this by manually uninstalling the Update but unter the Windows Features window the tick beside IE11 wasn't set.

The funny thing is that I can start IE11 and if I check the version under the info of the IE11 it displays a correct Version (11.0.9600.16428 and KB2841134). Under Installed Updates the KB2841134 isn't shown.
Also I tried to manually remove packages with the following command:

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart"
But after that I didn't have installed IE at all and couldn't install Version 11 or below. With the System recovery I switched on the state before uninstalling.
In the update history I can see after scrolling a little that IE11 was successfully installed.

I'm migrating to a new PC today (this is posted from the new one), and I'm determined to keep it more organized than my last one. I use a lot of opensource software, much of which doesn't have an installer, it's just copied to wherever you want it and shortcuts made manually. This is a problem when I'm trying to remember what's there.

Is there a way to create a record in "Programs and Features" for this software? I can create an uninstall command script for each one if it requires an uninstaller to be listed here, or whatever needs to be done. I just don't know how this part of Windows 7 works.

EDIT: I just found this. I'm still reading, but it looks like what I need.

Answer:Make Record in "Programs and Features" for Programs With No Installer?

Hi 4evrplan, welcome to the Seven Forums.

As far as I know it is not possible to manually add portable applications to Programs and Features list.

I have solved this simply by creating a folder called Portable Apps on C:\Program Files, adding all portable apps here in their own subfolders. A folder listing of this folder = a list of my portable apps, backing up all portable apps for instance before reinstalling Windows I simply just need to copy this one folder with its subfolders.

I can't seem to get rid of these programs that I assume I've uninstalled. It doesn't show a size for them either and when I go to uninstall.

i've had this problem for a while, and can't seem to find any fix for it. i've looked through these forums for similar problems, and tried the given solutions but nothing seems to work.

i can open control panel fine, then when i double click programs and features, the loading icon appears briefly and disappears immediately.

i've downloaded several registry cleaning tools that haven't helped and tried to enable in the registry editor, which also didn't work.

can anybody help?

thanks.

Answer:Cannot access programs and features.

Try using SFC
System Files - SFC Command

If no help, type the name of the program in search and see if you can access that way.
