Application data/settings backup

Question: Application data/settings backup

Hello, I'm using a combination of the Vista backup to do a complete backup of my OS and applications (for emergency restore) and another backup tool to handle my data.

My OS is on C: and my data on D: (and other drives).

My query is that C: will contain application settings/data - for example if I write actions in Photoshop they will be stored under the user application data subdirectory or if I create a DOT template for Word it will be stored under the hidden data directories for Word.

I want to be sure that I am backing up all of the vital application data/settings so that I can either restore just those or in an emergency can restore my full Vista backup (done weekly) and then restore the application data (which I want to backup daily).

I've searched this set of forums and elsewhere to find something that lists which subdirectory tree(s) I need to ensure that I have backed up (and I guess I'll need to do a registry backup too each day just in case settings are stored there). I can't find such a list.

Does anyone know of a document that details what the vital stuff to backup is?

Preferred Solution: Application data/settings backup

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Application data/settings backup

If you need to backup Photoshop, you need to find it's directory (probably under Adobe), and for Word it's probably under Microsoft or Office. Another option is to simply backup the entire AppData folder, that way you can't miss anything.

If you're talking about a large-scale backup for your whole system, you will probably want to backup drivers as well (you only need to back these up once, all the drivers are installed in C:\swsetup, but I prefer just saving the installer files).

I reinstalled my OS multiple times, with my personal data on another drive. What I backed up from my C drive was:

Select folders from AppData (only for programs' settings that I wanted to backup)Fonts that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Fonts)Themes that I had collected over time (C:\Windows\Resources\Themes)Custom Power Plans (exported/imported through powercfg.exe in command prompt)Start Menu folder, for lots of links I created (AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Private Profile, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu - Public Profile)Certain folders in Program Files of older programs that I run as Administrator for compatibility purposes (programs that need Administrator privileges to save stuff in Program Files)I did not backup the registry in anyway, because the registry changes I made were saved as .reg files. Other registry changes are made while installing programs (which after a clean install will be done anyway)
What you think is vital to backup depends on your system. Generally speaking, since you store your data on another drive, the AppData folder and drivers should be it, but you may have certain things that you want to save.

Have you run any scans for infections? I Googled hrcopul.dll, and everything that I found points to a infection.

First time posting.

I ran combofix.exe a few weeks ago before I knew of the help available via these forums. When I ran the program the following files were detected and deleted:

c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\inst.exe

I do nightly scans using AVG Free 8.5 and Spybot Search and Destroy (both up-to-date). Nothing was detected in either scan last night.

I ran combofix.exe again tonight and the following was detected and deleted:

c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\inst.exe

Now that I realized there is a lot of help available on these forums, I'm here looking for some guidance.

I do have a combofix log file that was produced after the second combofix scan and I'd be more than happy to post it here, but I will wait for further instruction first.

My main concern is why inst.exe is showing up a second time.

Thank-you for any help you can provide.

Answer:inst.exe found in c:\documents and settings\<username>\Application Data\

I also ran a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Quick Scan after the combofix completed.

No infections were detected.

Hello All,

I may be answering my own question here, but how would one go about backing up Outlook Express account/configuration settings? I've got a user who's moved to a new (personal) machine, and would like to skip the setup. I've given him his .DBX files, and instructions on how to restore his mail, but I can't figure out how to restore his settings. (Unless they are IN his .DBX files, and he's sending me on a wild goose chase, which wouldn't surprise me) Can anyone comment?

Answer:Backup Outlook Express Settings (not data)

Tools->account->mail tab->there will be import and export buttons, you can use these to back up and restore the email account configuration settings. IIRC, you will probably need to re-enter the password, though.

Let me know if I am mis-interpreting what you need.

hi. I'm new, and i have a big a$$ problem. Around 3 month a god i started getting the anoying and very well known, CiD: popups. I went to C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data, and found a file called slow gram, containing 3 executables. 2 were named "ajgft6usdabjasdvuyafd" or giberish. There was a program running called "barbroam" or "barboom" or somthing like that. i killed the folder. all was well for a while, And then one day, i couldn't go to my computer. I cliked on it, and got the stupid flash light searching for a file. I clicked on it for hours, so i left it there. I came back an hour later. Still the flash light. I ran Security Task Manager, and found a file running called BOLT DATE.exe in aplacation data. I quarentiend it and killed the prossces. Answer:Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\update\flacor.d

Re: Error loading C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Adobe\update\flac

You have skipped many steps of the Read and Run Me first procedures. You will need to refer to the below running what you did not before, and then once completed, run MGTools.exe again and attach the zip file it creates along with the other requested logs.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ &a... Read more

Hello There!!
I am new in the page, so I hope to find someone to help me. Accidentally I had done a human error after a problem with sound in my inspiron N4010 I tried to do a recovery factory but I didn't a backup of all my important files so that I lost all my information now. That I did. I used Dell datasafe local backup application to restore drivers, the hard drive was formatted and re-installed all of the software originally shipping on my computer, this didn't fix the sound problem and the worst using basic Dell Datasafe mode basic. not returned me all files. so that I lost important files. I will be appreciating a lot if someone can post here how can I recover data? what software should I use?  How can I do it? it is possible to recove lost data?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Recovering Data after formatted Hard drive and reinstalled OS using Dell datasafe local backup application

You can try a free utility such as Recuva, but it's likely to be only partially successful at best.  If you must have the data back, and it's worth the cost, contact a data recovery service - it will likely cost a few hundred dollars but they are the best-chance option for getting the data back.

We are getting the above error randomly on some of the laptops we have deployed. The error comes right after you boot or when the windows 7 is left running. There are no special software running. The error in details is below.
"The boot configuration Data (BCD) settings for the following boot application have changed since Bitlocker was enabled
boot appplication: \windows\system32\winload.exe
change settings: 0x26000090
You must supply a bitlocker recovery key to start this system.
Confirm that the changes to the BCD settings are trusted.

If the changes are trusted then suspend and resume bitlocker. This will reset bitlocker to use the new BCD settings.
Otherwise restore the original BCD settings"
Can anyone please explain on how to correct this error. As before this is happening on few of the machines and we are seeing more as we go. Any tips would be nice...Thanks

Ok, running windows xp home on a peer to peer network. Have done avast antivirus and ad aware scans.

Friday my computer locked up (dang farmville!). I got impatient and did a hard reboot (holding the power button down). Quickbooks also was open.

When it rebooted it did the blue screen Stack rebuild thing.

Now MS Outlook can't open the data files and the quickbooks data file also appears to have been corrupted.

An interesting thing - we have the carbonite internet backup service. Unfortunately, it seems to overwrite and not make any kind of incremental backups, so once it's backed up, that's the file you can restore. I was hoping to try to find a file that had been backed up in the morning, instead of right around the time I had the problem.

Anyway, when I browse to look at the user documents and settings folder on the BACKUP, it shows the application data and local settings folders, as normal. On the computer, those folders are now MISSING. I uploaded a screen shot on our website: (sadly too big to attach)

Any idea of a simple way to fix this?

I looked online and Microsoft Outlook stores the data in personal.pst - that file also appears to be missing.

Answer:Blah! Application Data Folder Gone & Outlook Data won't open

Got it figured out.

Was able to restore a recent backup from the Carbonite service of my quickbooks file and only had to redo one day of entries.

Then did some more looking at Outlook threads on the net and first found out how to unhide hidden folders - the Application Data and Local Settings folders were hidden. Then found a thread about a scanpst.exe utility that repairs outlook data files.

Now it seems I'm back up and running!

Thanks for trying to help! Even tho no one had magic answers yet, I can see people cared and looked at my problems.

We are NOT alone! LOL

I curently don't use Dell Backup and Recovery, and I don't run any Dell startup items or automatic services. I also don't have the Recovery Partition in my current deployment. Because the partition is missing, Dell Bu & Rec takes a while to start if I click on the tile. When it does start, it offers to rebuild my recovery environment. It looks like in the System Backup settings, I see under more options the following: Instant Restore status (currently turned to on) and statuses for Overlay Icon and Context Menu.

Because I don't run startups or automatic services, and because my Recovery Partition is missing, I wonder if it will do anything at all to turn off Instant Restore, Overlay Icon, and Context Menu. I don't like launching Sys Bu & Rec, but will do so if you think that turning off Instant Restore, Overlay Icon, and Context Menu will shut off additional features.

Not sure how to explain what I mean but can anyone please tell me if there is any difference between backing up files as 'data' files or making a music CD as a means for backing up? I normally backup my music files, using Nero, as 'data' files. Once burnt, I can also use this same DVD/CD on my PC and play the music files in the normal way, so what is the difference between choosing 'data' as opposed to just backing up the files as music files, please? Does it perhaps take up less room when choosing the 'data' method?

I should be grateful for any replies.
Many thanks

Been messing around with PC’s for some years now and have perhaps become set in my ways in selection of programmes, specifically those in respect of defence of PC and the backing up of data and systems.
I have had occasion to watch a Microsoft technician working on an infected/corrupted computer recently and despite being able to keep up with the speed and dexterity of the technician I found that he used Hitman Pro, Malwarebytes, ADW Cleaner amongst others. None of the programmes that he introduced into the proceedings were ones that I used which made me wonder as to whether I am behind the times and too set in my ways.
Currently I use the paid for version of Emsissoft Antimalware, Norton Internet Security and CCleaner.
System images are created every weekend.
I also use Acronis True Image for system backups with its Nonstop data backup.
Running alongside Acronis I use Allway Sync for data backup.
All backed up data is held in four separate drives.
Every other week all my data and the current system image is placed onto an external drive that is only connected to the main PC at that time only.
All comments appreciated.

Answer:Am I too set in my ways - PC Protection, System backup, Data backup

I doubt that NASA has a more comprehensive range of backup options - I certainly don't! There must be some mighty valuable data involved. I don't think you need to be concerned.
My own office routine involves automated data backups from all machines to external drives every 15 minutes. I use Avast anti-virus software and CCleaner is run every 48 hours on all machines.
I have never created a system image in a lifetime of working with computers, and I have never run system backups. My websites and those of my clients are running on a dedicated server in a data centre, and of course there are comprehensive backup routines in use there.
I can't really comment on the Microsoft technician's software choices - I have never used any of them.

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. In the hidden folder "All Users" is a folder named "Application Data". Inside it is a folder named "Application Data". Inside that is yet another folder named "Application Data". This nonsense repeats itself to a depth of 16 folders, all named "Application Data". I cannot remove them. Windows tells me that I have to have permission from myself.

Norton 360 finds no risks or suspicious files on my computer.

Has anyone else had this idiotic problem? What causes it? More importantly, how do I get rid of that "All Users" directory tree altogether? I am the only user on my computer, so I don't need templates or anything else like that.

Thank you in advance for your helpful responses.

Answer:Application Data folder inside Application Data folder

Never seen that before!! judging by the lack of response sounds like its a new one!

It does definatly sound virus related in some way.

Malwarebytes in Safemode would find anything there, but wont undo the damaged caused assuming it is a virus of course. The folders would still be there!!

Suppose only way to fully sort that would be a refresh/reset.

Refresh - Maybe
Reset - Defo!

Iwould want to propose a backup solution for one my clients i.e Veritus to be able to backup all their data on the network realtime, or any other solution available in the market.
They recently had their data stolen (Physical theft of drive's) and their client contacts database compromised, they suspect rival companies did it,
And i would like to integrate the solution(Backup with will be installed on the network) with an encription solution that can be able to encript the backup done and is taken off site and the existing data on the server(s)
to ensure that even if the same happens again and the drives are physically stollen again the infromation on the drives is useless to the one who steal it if they cant decript it.

And the internal data is proteced from unauthorised access even from other users in the network.

So this is where data that has been backed up from the network is collected in the backup server and all this information can be collectively encriped and stored off shore and also the information existing the other servers( SQL, Exchange etc) is protected and if the drives are stollen then they are still useless to the theives.

what do i go for
and will it integrate with veritus or any other backup solution
what is the price
and the technical appplication of the solution and its feasibility

kindly get in touch with me as soon as you can i have to do it in the morning tomorrow

Does anyone know of a method for backing up software applications that are not stand alone applications. Say I need to reformat a computer but there is special software installed on it. In this case copying the folder in "C:\program files" and pasting into the new freshly installed would otherwise cause the application to stop working.

I'm not looking for a total disk back up imaging software, just a method for migrating software.

Thanks if you have any input.

Answer:Backup an Application

If you are backing up software that DOES NOT write info to your Registry then just about any backup software should be OK. If it does write to the Registry then it is not much use backing up the program alone. As long as you have the installation download/CD/DVD, you could probably back up the data part of the program. Then re-install the program and reload the data.

The best way, of course, is to do a FULL backup of the drive, but you already know that. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. Other MG'ers will probably provide better info/advice. Bazza

I know i can back up the whole computer using Norton Ghost but what if i just want to back up a particular software?

Answer:Backup program for a particular application

Not generally doable. When programs are installed, they make changes in the registry of the computer and in various parts of the Windows operating system. Simply finding a program that will copy over the files, will not copy the registry changes or any other simply copies files. That is why people who try this run into problems. To date I know of no program that copies applications into a useful format to save. There are migration programs and imaging software etc, but nothing for single applications to my knowledge.

Question: Application data

I was wondering if there was any way that I can stop applications from saving files into my personal folder on the C: drive. It seems that if I install a program (ie. Itunes) on say my D: harddrive, all these files associated with that program start to save onto my Documents and Settins/Applications data folder on my C: drive. Is this something that always happens or can I get around this? Another program that does this is Azureus...all my downloads go to my C: drive instead of where I am telling them to go on a different drive!
Thank you

I have a couple of problems, this just one of them.

I was having problems with a game, and they showed me how to fix it, but, when I went into Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data, the application data was not there. I went in search of it (search) and found it there. Should I grab it and put it where it should go? Or is it hid somehow? How do I fix it?

The second one is I am getting popups all over the place. I downloaded NoAds, but it isn't working very well. I had a couple of others also, but they weren't any better, so I took them off. Any suggestions there? I have ran adaware, spybot, and clean. I also have spywareguard and spywareblaster installed. (advice from tech in hijack this forum). I need help getting rid of these pests.

Thank you for any and all help you can give me.

The Application Data folder is hidden by default. To view the folder, you can type the path directly in Start/Run dialog. Or type in %appdata% in Start, Run.

Question: Application Data

I have two folders named "Application Data." One is C:\Documents and Settings\(User name)\Application Data, and the other is C:\Documents and Settings\(User name)\Local Settings\Application Data. They're both pretty large (especially the Outlook files). Some of the folders within those folders seem to be duplicates. Can I delete either one of them?

Answer:Application Data

No you can't delete the folder 'Application Data'. If you did there is changes of your user-profile crashes. Also, most of the application or software will not run or executive.
If you want to increases the free-space in your Hard disk.

You can use s Ccleaner
it will clean all the temporary files and unwanted resitry entry.

Secondly, if you have more than 1 outlook mail profile or pst files. Than you can move it to other drives or use the features of archive and move it as a backup to other driver or external drive.

Its strictly not recommended to delete any one of thes folders 'Application Data'.

Question: Application Data!

Hi! My computer's hard drive used a lot of space therefore i was trying to free up some space. I checked all documents on the computer to free some space but all user documents add up to be around 18 GB while the hard drive has used about 97 GB of space. I wondered what was using the other space and then I saw the folder Application Data under Documents and Setting/User name. The Application Data is using around 40 GB of space and looked in it to see what I could delete and thought I might screw something up while deleting from there.

Can you help me in deleting files from there because it is using too much space and I do not want screw something up?

Dear sir
The backup application could not start due to an internal error:

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. (0x80070422).

I've tried starting up the windows Backup service in "Manual" startup type, making sure that Remote Procedure Call is on "automatic" and started, and BITS is on "Manual" and started. Still get the same error message.
Tried restarting. Same error message. Any advice?

After Windows gave my laptop a minor case of the flu yesterday, I've decided that I really need to partition my hd and seperate the OS from the stuff I really care about. But then there's the problem that I don't know how to do that.

Do I need to format the hd before I insert the recovery disk or will it prompt me for that option? As I understand it I can't partition an hd containing files already...?

If I want to partition the hd into 3, how much space would just Windows XP require? I haven't decided if 3 really is necessary though. Any thoughts on the matter? (Have 80 GB)

I have several programs where I lack the installation disks. Using an external hd, can I just copy the folders and move them back once I've partitioned the hd? For some of these programs, like Nero, I needed to enter a registration key. How do I retrieve that and enter it into regkey afterwards? Obtionally, is there a good program out there to make backup of applications that would also retrieve the reg key?

Any help on these matters would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Backup of entire application folders

It seems, that you need partition manager software. I prefer Acronis Disk Director.
It will take you 10 minutes to complete all operatitions.
So, first you need srink your partition, as you have only one partition 80GB. How much free space do you have?
Shrink all free space. On unpartitioned area create 2 partitions.
For example: if you have 30 GB with OS and apps (after shrinking), create another partition 50 GB. Then press "commit".
Now you can continue: copy first partition on second (note: both partitions are primary), press "commit". After that, you can delete old unneeded windows files from second partition, and apps data from first. Again use Disk Director: shrink first partition (from 30 GB till 10-15 GB, as you wish), resize second from 50 till 60-65> "commit"> and again shrink second from 65-till 30. At last on unpartitioned area create new logical partition (40 GB) for storage private data.
So, you'll have 3 partitions: 1-OS;2-apps;3-private data,
none of data will be lose, all programs will be copied correctly, and you wont need any key, it's very reliable program.
As you wish, in future you could reinstall only OS partition, and the other 2 will be saved!
Really recommend!

Microsoft Outlook 2000, XP, 2003 and 2007
Microsoft Outlook Express and Windows Mail

Answer:Do a backup of your E-mails! - great application!

Hi there
For outlook why not just use pfbkup.exe or even the archive function.

For Outlook express just change the data area where the folders are stored and just save these with Windows express.

For other email clients this might be OK but I'm now trying to "minimize" the number of 3rd party apps I have on machines. Maintenance and serial numbers etc etc gets ever more complex so I'm "Going back to the roots".

A 3rd party app for me now has to do ALL of the following

1) Is it SIGNIFICANTLY better than what is available in the standard system.

2) Is it cost effective.

3) Is the manufacturer / developer still going to be around a few years later or are you going to get stuck with some obsolete app a few years down the road.

Paid apps that I use that MS has no better or equal equivalent for (to ??) are things like Photoshop CS4, Acronis True Image (MS backup is getting better but still doesn't have anything like the functionality yet), some audio editing software, DVD authoring, Winamp,MS Office. (Open Office does a passable job but still doesn't compare with "the real thing" especially as MS office - even the Enterprise version can be sourced HEAVILY discounted -- either as a student, via MS Use at Home programs --get your employer to sign up) or technet /msdn.

Free 3rd party apps - MySQL, WAMP server, ?Torrent

Jury's still out - Firefox vs IE8.

(Corporate apps like SAP with its front end GUI, Oracle, Eclipse IDE etc don't co... Read more

I am getting a error that says "Windows Backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed (0x800800005)". I found a couple articles saying my account didnt have the rights to do a backup. I dont know how this could be since I have a weekly scheduled backup and havent had a problem and I havent changed my rights. Plus Im logged on as a administrator. So the solution I found said this

"Your Windows user account doesn't have the privileges it needs to run the task, Thomas. Go to Start, right-click Computer, then choose Manage, Local Users and Groups, Groups. Right-click Administrators and click 'Add to group', Add, Advanced, Find Now. Double-click Local Service and press Ok"
Fix Backup & Restore when it won't start

However Local users and Groups does not appear in my computer management. Im using Home Premium which is why I believe. Anyhow I dont plan to continue solely using windows backup either. Does anyone know how I can remedy this? Whether I actually do not have the appropriate rights? or What else could be my problem? Thanks alot.

Answer:Windows Backup application could not start

The error code that you are getting is a classic COM "Class Not Registered" error.

This indicates to me that you have had a fairly major corruption of your machine. That could also explain why your "Local users and groups" does not show up either.

Bad news is that I can't really offer you any advice on how to fix that. Hopefully someone else here can build on what I've said & help you out some more!

I have recently completely re-installed my win xp prof sp3 system and also subsequently used restore. So everything is fine, BUT I did a major backup as I do regularly and noticed that the amount of data in the backup had increased considerably. When I checked I found that I had 2 copies of the folder 'Application Data'. That's misleading because I know everyone has 2 folders of that name. Forget about the one in 'Local Settings'. I also have one in the folder bearing my name. I also have a similar one in another folder. If we pretend my name is Fred and my desktop computer is called fredsdesktop then this other folder is called fred.fredsdesktop and in this folder is another Application Data, similar but with more recent dates. Is this to do with my restore process? If I disable (by changing its name) the 'active' 'Application Data' will my computer start up and run. I just dont want to disable the computer with a false move.
Thanks for any help

Answer:'Is application data' essential

Leave them alone unless you want problems.

One of the main reasons for a total backup to grow in size with each successive backup is the "System Restore" feature. It creates a new restore point everytime you install software , and adds that to the existing restore points. It can easily add several Gbytes if you have a large hard drive.

Before I create a full system image backup I disable SR to remove all the restore points. This reduces the size of my backup file by around 3-5 GB.

I make the backup then I enable SR again.

So I right-clicked and opened Application Data Properties/Security and tried to change the Administrator permissions, but after I checked the box for full permissions and then clicked "Apply" several other exception dialogs popped up and then the entire entry for Administrators (under Group or user names) was deleted.

Can I fix this? Does it matter? ( So far, I haven't noticed anything not working correctly.)

Answer:Application Data permissions

C:\ProgramData is a hidden system folder. It is hidden because there is a good reason, that the user does not alter it. Better you keep it as it is, hidden.

Hide that place, use the computer normally. IMHO the permission thing will not affect anything. But if it causes any issue, drop a post.

I'm in dire need of hard drive space and I've noticed that the Application Data folder requires a lot of space.

My question is: Can I delete files from that folder or will programs be unable to function properly?

For example, I use Kaspersky Internet Security and that folder is 200MB big. Can I delete it?

Thank you for any response.

Answer:Application Data Folder

Not a clever idea. There's a reason those files are there, and there's a reason that folder is hidden by default. Have you already emptied out your local cache folders (c:\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\ where the cache folders are called \temp\ and \temporary internet files\)?

Following that, you could check your Add/Remove Programs list in Control Panel, and see if there's anything in there you never use.

Once you've deleted or uninstalled a pile of stuff, empty your Recycle Bin, then boot into Safe Mode and run a DeFrag on your C: drive; that can often free up some space in itself.

I need access to application data to put back some of my trillian logs and other game data from XP.

Edit: Ohhhh okay its located in.... App Data now, right above Application data....

Id rather not have useless links in my folders.
Edit and yet another thing how do i get too cookies? The link in Users\ dont do nothing but say access denied.

Also Local Settings, How do i get to my temp files and Temp Internet files.

Answer:Accessing Application Data

In Windows 7, the AppData folder stores user settings. A folder called Application Data exists for backwards compatibility with XP.The Application Data folder is just a junction point folder to the AppData folder and is hidden. The only reason that it exists is to redirect legacy applications, that are hard coded to look for that folder, to the new location in Windows 7 i.e. the AppData\Local folder. So its not a useless link and should not be deleted.

To see cookies, click on Start button and in the search box, type "shell:Cookies" without quotes. To see your temporary internet files, type "shell:Cache". To access the temp folder, type "%tmp%".

Looking at the description you have given; it seems to me that you may well be infected with malware.
Before we send you to our Malware Section, there are a couple of things that you can do:
1. Clean all the temporary files from the computer.
Double click My Computer > Right Click on the C: Drive > Properties > Disk Clean Up

2. Using "Internet Options" clean the Browsing History.
This can be found under General; once done, click on Content and Clear SSL State.

3. Run whatever Anti-Malware and AntiVirus programs you have and if any thing is found remove them as per the instructions for the program/s.

When you have completed these tasks, report back with the results.

While trying to fix a problem with Java working properly, I discovered that when going to Documents and Setting\username\App Data\Local, that the Application Data folder contains another Application Data folder, and it another, then another, etc. Each Application Data folder has a shortcut arrow marking it. When I open the Properties for the first one, and then select the Previous Versions tab, it displays a list of Application Data folders with a variety of dates.

When reading the help, it says that the previous versions are created by either System Restore or Backup. I have used System Restore only once, but I have never setup Backup at all.

Since I have fixed the Java problem in both IE8 and Firefox, I thought that I would try the same with Opera by reinstalling it on itself, but the installer wasn't able to see the source file, and when using Windows Explorer I wasn't either.

Perhaps the only solution is a fresh clean install of the OS, but I'm not anxious to do so. Since it's not clear what caused the problem that exists, the new install may end up the same way.

Any ideas? I'm all ears.

DSynchronize Easy Portable Backup Application by Dimio - topic here ..

Perform Real Time Sync, Backup Large Storage Mediums With DSynchronize : on :

'DSynchronize is a small, yet extremely powerful data sync and backup application. Unlike other utilties, it doesn?t force users to configure a number of backup job settings before performing the backup operations. (- so very easy for everyone!). The application works on all versions of Windows. We tested it on Windows 7, 64-bit edition.'

'Data backup utilties help users not only create exact copies of important files and folders, but also restore data without having to manually copy each backed up folder and folder back to source folders. Moreover, most file backup applications come packed with synchronization feature, enabling users to create bi-directional sync jobs to sync specified folders in real time. Today, we came across another powerful application called DSynchronize, which lets you create, customize and execute file backup and synchronization jobs. Apart from providing all conventional tools and features to seamlessly back up data, it includes two special options, namely Antifragmentation and Ignore file path errors, which allow you to backup large volume of data from one storage medium to another without facing any issues.

Additionally, you can choose to copy... Read more

I am using a custom windows 7 theme that uses my preferred combination of window color choices etc.

However, this color scheme does become an inconvenience when I am working in certain applications like Autodesk and Photoshop as it makes their respective UI's very obscure.

Is there a way to exempt certain applications from personalization settings?

Answer:How to exempt an application from personalization settings

Welcome to the Seven Forums
You are going to get that with a custom theme and some programs look just fine while others do not. You will need to either find a new custom theme or switch to the default Aero theme when using those programs.

Dear forumers,

I have an issue with a non-unicode program. I want to learn to type the Russian standard keyboard layout (ЙЦУКЕН) so have an application which teaches me called Anykey 1.02 Demo. The problem is that this is not a fully unicode application and since my system is not set to russian at Control Panel -> Regional Settings -> Advanced tab, Anykey won't display cyrillic letters correctly, it shows questionmarks instead. Of course, it'd be simple to just set up the system run non-unicode applications in Russian, but it also messes up everything (another non-unicode apps). It's not really comfortable to restart the system every time I want to practice by Anykey, so I'm asking if there's any way to run an application (only one, separately from the other) with different non-unicode settings (eg. a command or *.manifest file or sg.)?

Thanks for your help

I have obviously made an entry error when downloading one drive onto my PC.When I attempt to share a document it appears in my contacts email as a message from my wife. So I need to start again. How do I remove all my original settings

Answer:clearing one drive application settings from PC

When you update to the cloud (which is what One drive is), it normally defaults to the primary user, which I assume is your wife.
If you want your own cloud use try using a Gmail account and Gmail Drive.

The only settings you should be using are the default ones reset to insure you are,
Reset process first opening Internet explorer

We applied some UAC settings via Group Policy to all Windows 7 machines. Now some old applications are throwing up a prompt and the users normal credentials wont run the app. The point is that the app DID NOT require admin privileges before we applied
the settings. The users were able to launch the app without prompts and run it successfully.
Does anyone know which security or UAC setting may be causing this? Remember that the apps ran perfectly well before these settings were applied  without an administrative account.

I need to gain access to the Application Data folder, specifically to replace Adobe CS3 Bridge's keywords file. I have the backup but I can't get into the app folder where the file is stored. I understand the need for security, etc etc, but there are legit reasons to go there - this is one. So, how do I do it? Thanks, EdB

Answer:Unlock application data folder

If AppData is locked, RMB > Properties > Security [tab] >Edit... > Add > Advanced... > Find Now > *your user name* > OK until all forms are closed. You should have access to it.Administrative rights aren't needed to access AppData, in fact, by default the ACLs look like this on my standard user account:SYSTEM (full)Administators (full)Pompadour (full)Edit:I wouldn't encourage trying this on the Application Data folder. I've never tried hijacking the links Windows created by default so I don't really know if they continue to function correctly after they've been taken over. That said, I wouldn't see why they would break apart... either way, you've been warned!

Answer:move application data folder?

You can follow this tutorial here on sevenforums : User Profile - Change Default Location[2]=User%20Accounts

I always just move my docs, music, pics, etc to my second hard drive, and under environmental variables point the windows temp folders (there's 4 of them) to a folder I create on my other hard drive..

Hi, not sure if you someone has produced a method for resolving this issue? I have several user accounts on my PC, mine is the only one that seems to have this issue. Mine is not an Administrator account, and indeed the admin account does not have this problem. I read somewhere that it could have been caused by changing user permission; if I have caused this :-

1. Can it be undone and if so how?

2. Will it impact computer file searches or backups if not resolved?

I'm not sure how to find out if this has been covered before by yourselves, if so please point me in the right direction for the information.

In anticipation of you help
Many Thanks

Answer:Application Data folder keeps replicating itself

By far the simplest fix is to use Windows System Restore to roll Windows back to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

If that doesn't help, try restoring an earlier system image or backup.

I'm using Windows SP3. Some time ago, I had a system crash and had to reformat my C: drive and reload windows. Luckily, I had an external backup of my data. When I reloaded my data, I ended up with 2 separate folders under 'application data'. One is called 'Bill & Lois' and the other is called 'Bill & Lois.Bill'. Some of my apps us one and some use the other. I would like to get rid of one of the 2 folders. I have copied all the folders and files from 'Bill & Lois.Bill' into the folder titled 'Bill & Lois'. I have opened some of the apps the have data in 'Bill & Lois.Bill' and tried to find if they have any method of changing the location of where their data is stored but cannot find any such command. Any suggestions on how I can achieve this?

Answer:Combining folders in Application Data

What would be the advantage to doing this?

If these files are under different account names, they can't be moved and still function.

Can application data, such as the personal folders in Outlook be put in a library? I do not see in the file structure something like "C;/User/Appdata/Outlook" Or am I missing the library concept?

Answer:Application Data in Library Question

Hi there

Ghat you can do is download file pfbackup.exe from the office download section (note Office checks genuine validation before download). This creates an extra function in the Outlook file menu when you are displaying the Inbox : ==> BACKUP.

This program makes it easy to backup / archive Outlook email folder.

In outlook you can then use this to save / re-open your outlook folders .

For example save in D:\email_backup.pst

Now THIS file can be added to your library.

Windows add/remove but it doesn't uninstal programs that I want uninstalled! Maybe I'm doing soemthing wrong. The program I want deleted (Windows Movie Maker)doesn't show in the list. However if I have my computer search for the program, it can find it and I can run it from the search finds. How is that possible? If I run the search it finds the program in the Local Settings/Application Data file (where I found a bunch of stray stuff, like folders for programs I uninstalled ages ago). I am NOT a very skilled, experianced user and don't want to delete things my computer needs. However I do want to keep it in prime condition and with enough room to run programs I DO want to use (plus I'm a bit miffed that the program won't allow me to delete it!) Any advise?

Answer:Application Data Folder/uninstall

How to uninstall Movie Maker

according to the link above, microsoft's stance is that you shouldn't uninstall it as its a system componet.

I'm finalizing my move from an old Windows 7 computer to a new 8.1 one. Unfortunately Windows Easy Transfer no longer transfers settings - which worked flawlessly when moving from XP to 7 - only user files. As recommended by Microsoft I used PCMover (,
but the offered edition doesn't allow for choosing which user settings are to be transfered - it chooses by itself and omits a lot (confirmed with a log and with Laplink's customer service).
Hence I'd like to archive all the application data/settings in order to use it in case I will need it when (re-)installing a piece of software on my new computer (and I use a lot of programs). Could you enlighten me on all locations where application data
is stored? It's not only AppData for sure (cf. here, for example:
