Vista Ultimate x64: turn off display, will not turn back on

Question: Vista Ultimate x64: turn off display, will not turn back on

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

Okay, I have my power settings so that the display and hard disks turn off after x-amount of minutes. Sometimes when I come back after it's been like this for a while, I run my finger accross the touchpad and nothing happens (normally the desktop comes right up as with a screen saver). It's like the display just won't come back on. I've tried pressing keys, pushing the Fn+F10 button that switches to an external monitor, pressing Windows>U>S (the sequence of keys that puts the computer on standby), Ctrl+Alt+Del... Nothing works. Every time, I've had to do a hard reboot by holding down the power button.

The rep. from the reseller I bought from is trying to tell me that:

"Go into you power options and ensure turn off monitor and hard
drive are set to NEVER, otherwise you will have to do a hard re-boot
every time it happens"

and

"When Windows shuts off the monitor and hard drives it is permanent until
you re-boot. It is different than hibernation or stand by, turn
off is completely disengaged from Windows so no other programs can turn
it back on, or unauthorized users etc..."

Which is absolutely not true, as I have been doing this same thing for 3 years on my previous laptop.

So.... any ideas?

A few times now, the screen has turned off after not being used for a few minutes, as it should, but then I haven't been able to get the screen to turn on again.  Not amount of mouse wiggling or key pressing will get the screen to come on again.  Sometimes it goes a very slightly different shade of black, like it is trying to do something, doesn't come on again.  The only thing I can do is hold the power button down until it turns the laptop off and turn it on again, which works. Any ideas anyone?  It's frustrating as you loose whatever you were working on.... Thanks James PS. It's just a couple of months old, but has happened pretty much from new, although very occasionally.  Had previous version of this machine which had to go back due to power issues, but that did the same thing.

Answer:G780 Won't turn display back on

hi Tinhob,

Welcome to the Forums.

Can you try to boot into Safe Mode with Networking and see if the poblem re-occurs. (this isolates the possibility of non-microsoft apps that's most likely causing the issue).

If the system wakes up fine after the screen turns off or if the unit goes to sleep / hibernate, try to perform a clean boot and observe it in normal mode.

Let me know your findings,

After sitting for a period of time an hour or more usually the monitor turns off and no buttons seem to get the monitor to turn back on.

The Qosmio G35 is still running and every once in awhile the screen comes back on but I don't know why.

Answer:Qosmio G35 display turns off and won't turn back on

Did you try to update the display driver and the BIOS?

I read about similar issue in this forum and mostly a BIOS update and graphic card driver update helps to sort out this issue.

Good luck

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 and all has been great except one thing. When I leave the computer for about 10 minutes or so, the display turns off like it is supposed to. If I want to turn the display back on though, I find I'm unable to with the mouse, keyboard, or power button. It's like it is stuck in limbo and I have to restart the PC. What's wrong with it?

Answer:Display won't turn back on after automatically turning off

IS this a Dell? Some Dell computers will go into some damned low-power mode, and the power light will change to Orange. The only way I have been able to fix it, was to put in a new power supply. I've done this for 2 workstations already.

Check your Power Light, is it Green or Orange, or blinking? If the computer is in sleep mode, it will Blink on and off once a second. Other blinking patterns are error codes. Sometimes a system will just get stuck in Sleep mode and you have to force it back on.

When you are trying to wake the system, does the Monitor come back on? I've had computers stall like this.

Try changing your advanced power settings:

Usually you can get to it by Control Panel, Power, Power Scheme, and open your scheme and go into Advanced. Try changing the values for "hard Drive Power Down", change it to 45 minutes. Also, try setting it so that the Monitor does not turn off, just enable toe screensaver after 15 minutes or so, then test it, make sure it recovers from Screensaver.

I don't know if you are just telling your monitor to go off or if you are allowing the computer to go into Sleep mode, I would change the Monitor Off to "Never" and just tell it to sleep after an hour of non-use.

Just try different variations, with the monitor turning off or staying on. You can always choose a Blank Screensaver.

Hello Microsoft team,
We need for an application to unplug and replug usb3 - not physically but with a program.
We checked a lot on the internet but did not find answer how to do it in windows 8.1 pro (in c++).
We know that hibernation creates something alike, but how can we only turn down the power of usb3 and return the power back on back via program (in c++).
Thank you for your help.

I just installed a new water cooler for my CPU. But now when I turn on my computer it will stay on for 2-4 seconds, shut off for 2-4 seconds and turn back on, with no display on the monitor. No beep code given at start-up. Everything I've seen online is saying that there is basically a short somewhere in the computer, or the new part. I have tried disconnecting the new water coolers cables too. And drawn the same reset solution. If anyone could help me out with this I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

Along with the Vista x64 pc we also have three other pc's at home (two are Vista 32 bit, the other is XP), one xbox360, two Wii's, and one ps3. They all connect to the internet with a wireless connection. The Vista x64 pc I have tried both a wireless connection as well as a hard wired ethernet connection.

I have two Cisco/linksys wireless routers that I have tried and the problem is the same regardless of which one I try to use. I have a WRT54GL and a WRT160NL. I have tried various firmware versions for both.

The problem involves the Vista 64-bit pc. It is the only Vista 64-bit device we have in the house. The internet runs fine as long as that pc is turned off. As soon as I turn it on, none of the devices I listed have internet access any more. On the Vista 64-bit pc I have tried both hard wired as well as wireless NIC's. Doesn't matter. I have tried putting in a static IP address as well as DHCP, neither makes a difference. Also, I installed Vista Business 32-bit on another hard drive for this pc and as soon as I did that my pc no longer took down the internet. It is obviously a problem with Vista 64-bit.

I have spent hours googling this. Apparently it is a common problem with 64-bit OS's and a lot of people are having this problem. So far I have formatted and reinstalled Vista on the pc in question to rule that out. I have disabled IPv6, turned down the speed on the NIC to 10mb Full Duplex, disabled the Firewall, disabled wireless security on the router... Read more

Answer:Everytime I turn on my Vista Ultimate x64 pc, it takes the internet down for all

I would say that it that it is a program running in the background as i once had a trojan that was not strong enough to kill my computer however just by running in the background and sending out its messages it would overload the routers/modem.

What I would do it turn on the Pc in question.

Start task manager

Click Netowkring tab and see if the network usage is high.

if it is then click the Performance tab and then select resource monitor.

select network and see what process's are using the network if not then it very well could be a settings issue and I would not know which.

I had it for nearly 2 years,Lenovo Y50-70 Touch -2 days ago while playing games on it, I smell a chemical smell coming from it so I immediately shut it down just in case. The next time I turn it on, it was fine the backlit keyboard glow red as usual but no display, and now it shut down after 4 seconds (with the fan running) whenever I turn it on except, sometimes It stay on (but still no display and no fan running).I got no experience into opening pc and such, I I tried opening it up and remove the dust that built us by quite a bit and tried to locate where the chemical smell was from, I though it was probably from the Fan or Coolers as it seems more strong there but not sure. After trying to turn the laptop on a few time the strong smell kind of dissipate a lot, and smell weaker.I been having a hard time trying to pinpoint just which part of the laptop is needed to replace. So if anyone could help me in the right direction it would be great. I just hope it wont have to buy a whole new motherboard x.xAlso idk if thats helpful information, but the first year playing games was fine, but the 2nd year and the laptop kind of overheated so I tried to cut down a bit and the fans were making more noises than ever. Especially when opening a new game or google chrome.

Answer: Laptop turn on for 4 seconds (No Display, Fan noise) and then turn off

A chemical smell to me tells me it's likely a failing/burnt out capacitor...It would be best to have it checked out at a shop...

Hey,

I'm having the jumpy touchpad condition where I would like to just turn off my touchpad because I'm using my mouse anyway, but since I installed a legitimite version of Windows 7 to get rid of Vista I'm unable to do anything with my mouspad.

The Fn+F9 doesn't work and I can't get to the settings of the touchpad.

I know I can fix it by going back to vista, but that's not going to happen, so anyone know any solutions?

Answer:Re: Can't turn touchpad off using Win 7 and don't want to get back to Vista

Hi

First of all it would be interesting to know what notebook you have?.
Secondly you should install the touchpad driver to gt the touchpad working.

Furthermore the Toshiba Flash Card Support Utility should be installed to get the FN buttons to work.
The Flash Card utility is notebook independent tool and you could use one released for Satellite L500?

I did this on my A200 and this worked....

Hi friends, my computer is Lenovo X61 : T7500(2.2GHz), Intel Turbo Memory, WinVista Business.- I used Recovery CD set to "recovery windown to Factory" (make windown fresh like u just got it).But when it done, my computer restart and window vista business gone change for window XP .I wonder does lenovo shipping for me wrong CD recovery set? How to get my window vista back like i order from them.Any friends or support team can help me out please. i appriciate it !

Answer:X61 vista business turn to XP after "recovery from Factory". How to get Vista Back?

I'm guessing that you got the free Windows XP Product Recovery DVD with your X61, and fell into the trap accidentally set by Lenovo! During the last few months Lenovo has been shipping Windows XP DVD's with ThinkPads, so that users can downgrade if they wish. This is good. The catch is that the DVD is labeled "Product Recovery DVD". Nowhere does it say Windows XP. So a Vista user can easily make the mistake of firing up a Windows XP product recovery. Doh! Anyhoo you can get a Vista Recovery DVD by calling Lenovo support. You will most likely have to pay for it, but I would tell them your story. Lenovo made the labeling mistake.

I am using Vista 64-Bit Home Premium. I have my screensaver is set to turn on at 5 minutes and my display is set to turn off at 10 minutes. This wasn't a problem when I was running Vista 32-Bit Home Premium. Since I've reformatted I've encountered this problem. I'm pretty much running the same programs as before. I've tried restoring power options to default already. How am I supposed to know which running processes might be preventing my monitor from turning off? Even if it were, I don't understand why the screensaver would start, but the display won't turn off.

EDIT: The display does turn off if I do not use my picture screensaver. Could it have something to do with my screensaver?

Please help.

Didnt really solve my problem. Found out it's the problem with iMac bootcamp which Apple will likely fix. Something to do with the headphone in-put on iMac, windows can't sleep when it's plugged in.
Thanks all for help and viewing.

I've been trying to Turn off my display using the power settings in Vista 64 which didn't work for me. Tried using different programs like Mon0 1.1 etc, i downloaded from Cnet just to turn off my display but all failed. Display keep turning back on, even when there's no programs running. Tried all sorts of ways, running powercfg with code :
powercfg -Change -monitor-timeout-ac 10
powercfg -Change -monitor-timeout-dc 10

But doesn't seem to have any effect. Nothing.

I think there are programs running at the background which i don't know what is it, keeping my display or my computer from going to sleep mode. But seems too complicated for a novice like me to understand how PC and OS works.

Is there anyway to put the display to sleep mode? Any settings, powercfg code or anything? Basically i just want my display to be in sleep mode, not my computer. Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance!

I am running bootcamp vista 64 on my iMac Quad Core i7.

Answer:Can't Turn off my display Vista 64

Go to search type cmd. Right click on CMD, run as administrator. In that prompt type this
powercfg -lastwake.... from CMD It will tell you what is waking your computer. Then we can fix it.

Do all this as administrator user, and after you have the sleep problem

hey i bought a computer and it came with vista 64 bit awhile back and its super laggy ome people say 32 bit runs better and i was wondering if im able to turn my 64bit into 32bit or back to xp without rebuying

Answer:Is it possbile to turn vista 64bit back into 32bit

Hello Soldier,

Yes, you can turn the 64bit OS into the 32bit one. What you need is the Vista installation DVD, if you dont have one you can always borrow one from your friend and during installation use your activation key to activate the new OS. The activation key which you got with the computer is good for both, the 64bit and 32bit Vista.
Now few words about downgrading to XP, I think it is possible as long as you can find needed XP drivers for your computer. Before you do anything look around for drivers, it apply for the Vista 32bit version as well.
Hope it helps. Cheers...

I downloaded the cleanup programs needed on my laptop, tossed them on a flash drive, and as soon as I plugged it into the desktop, the whole computer just shut down, blinked right off. If you upgraded, did the problem exist immediately after the upgrade and before any updates were performed?
If it came with Windows 10 preinstalled, try to perform a refresh.

Once again the computer impaired one comes to the table of knowledge...

I shut down my PC, fans stop, lights go out. About 6-8 mins later it starts up again, been doing this for four days now. I ran a virus scan which came out clean. The only way to keep it turned off is to unplug it. The only tinkering I've done lately is to try to open a port on my router (which I didn't get done, forgot password and reset button doesn't work). I don't think my PC is set to hibernate, I have never used that feature.

Is there something I should check?

Thanks!

Is there any way to turn off "Test Mode" in Vista x64 Ultimate?
Once upon a time I disabled driver signing through bcdedit /set nointegritychecks ON or bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS (don't remember anymore).
Now I would like to enable it back on, but can't.
As suggested; bcdedit -deletevalue loadoption or bcdedit /set nointegritychecks OFF/NO didn't work.

Also atempt to remove only the "test mode" watermark by overwriting user32dll.mui also didn't work. I managed to overwrite the file with changed files in bots system32 and syswow64, but nothing changed.

Can anyone please help?

1. Right click on CMD and click Run as administrator.
2. Type bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks ON and press Enter.
3. Restart computer.

You can turn off Test Mode by typing bcdedit /set testsigning off in the elevated command prompt above to.

Hi,

I've set Turn off the display setting in my power plan to 15 minutes and my monitor does turn off after that period (sometimes it doesn't!), but then, sometimes, it turns ON by itself after few minutes.

I've been Google-ing these days trying to find some solution and I came across suggestions which recommends that Allow this device to wake the computer option, located in the Power management tab, in the Properties window of the network adapter, in the Device manager, should be disabled. Also, there were suggestions that Wake on Magic packet property in the Advanced tab should be disabled, too. Unfortunately, all that did not work in my case.

Does somebody know what can cause this problem? Has anyone ever encountered such phenomena?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Monitor turn on by itself after "Turn off the display" starts

Hello alokin87 & welcome to Sevenforums,

Sometimes the computer Wake from standby because of a program's updating itself. Sometimes it does wake, sometimes it does not!

Therefore it could be the Windows Media center as explained in this Hotfix from MS. You could give a try:

http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-u...ly-2010-a.html

Look at post #1:

"-Do you find that your Windows 7 Computer wakes up from sleep unexpectedly at a particular time every day? If so then you might to check up if any scheduled tasks are waking your PC up."

I have 3 Benq XL2720Z monitors for gaming. XL2720Z LED Gaming Monitor | BenQ 16:9 LED Gaming monitors

I would like to know if it's better to turn off all 3 monitors by pressing the power button on all the monitors when not in use for over 12 hours or just let my computer turn the display off which I currently have a way to do to it by pressing a certain key.

Personally I would prefer to just let my computer turn the display off since I only have to press 1 button on my keyboard rather than have to press 3 power buttons on the monitors which don't really work that well.

However my final choice goes down to which is better for the monitors themself. I don't want to end up damaging the monitors.

Anyone know which way is safer? I can't seem to find a clear answer.

Not much details to help here. But you can try soft-reset. If that doesn't work, leave it for a while half an hour or so and then plug in the charger. Let's see if it boots. In case your phone has removable battery, remove it for while and try powering on.

I recently installed GTX670 SLI in my machine and run some benchmarks to test it is all working.

Afterwards, I did a clean format complete re-install with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 with updates. It appears now when I shut down my machine, windows turns off the display and seems to shut down but does NOT turn off the fans/LEDs on my computer.

I then re-installed a clean windows 7, installed my drivers ONLY (no windows updates) and it shuts down/turns the computer off fine.

Not sure what is going on, some update must be causing this? Can anyone help me?

Answer:Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 shut down not turn off after updates

Another install, something strange is happening.

When I shut down. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't.

If it don't then I have to hold power button 10 s and shut down. Then when I turn pc on it turns on for a few sec and then turns off, and then turns on again by itself and proceeds to continue to load up Windows.

Am now reinstalling and going to continue to test this.

Hello, I have a problem with my T410 (model: 25223FG)with Nvidia NVS 3100M  (driver version 8.17.12.5738  (27.06.2010) ) .The Fn+F3 Key-Command is configured to turn of the display. In almost 50% of the cases where I use the Key-Command (fn+F3), the display turns off but does not turn on again on mouse movement or key-press or touch-pad action. The faulty behaviour occures always when the T410 is connected to the AC adapter. And the chance of the display not turning on again seems to become higher with increase of the duration between Key-Command and mouse movement. In these test cases my energy manager configuration was set to not turn of anything, when connected to AC. If I configure it to turn of the display after some time I am experiencing the same problem. So my question is:Does anyone have a suggestion where to start? (display driver, bios,...) RegardsJonny

Before I remove a device from USB (especially flash drives) I've been turning it off.

Good enough.

But how do I turn it back on? I can restart my computer, which does it, but that is a bit extreme I think.

It is probably something incredibly simple, but I'm missing it.

Just got a TomTom for Christmas, unplugged the wireless controller my boy was testing out, but now I'm going to have to reset this computer to test my TomTom it appear.

He gets to play with his Wii, I get to play with my TomTom. Life is like that sometimes.

Answer:How to turn USB back on

OK, it isn't a power issue. Thinking about it the power came up OK, but after recycling the computer it saw the new device (which it didn't before).

I suspect device manager is the key, but something isn't quite right.

Last night, my computer turned off while I was using it. It wouldn't turn back on, and everything else on the surge protector was working fine. Since I've had problems with power supplies before, I turned the switch to the off position, removed the power cord, and let it cool off, in case it had overheated. When I tried to turn it back on, the power light and the LEDs on the inside blinked on and then back off. They were on for maybe a tenth of a second. During that time, there's no sound of my computer trying to turn on or anything, just the lights. Does anybody have any idea what this might be, or where to begin to troubleshoot??

btw, I know I mentioned LEDs, but I don't have any extensive mods, no overclocking, etc. Just pretty lights.

TIA for any help!!

It sounds like the PS went out, or is going out. If you can get your hands on a volt/ohm meter you can test it, or just replace it and see what happens.

I'm baffled.

Had to reinstall Windows XP. It appears there are issues with SP2 involving the video graphics card and the sound. Now I'm stuck. I thought that if I chose "do not use this device" under "Device usage" on the display adaptor tab, that it would pick the right adaptor.

Anyway, my screen went blank and I tried to reboot in safe mode and it sticks at mup.sys. I disabled mup and it now sticks at "nid" something or other.

I got the bright idea to use "Windows Narrator" to try and reenable the adaptor but I think the reinstall or the SP2 killed my sound.

Now I'm really stuck. Is there a way to reenable VGA adaptor from the command prompt in recovery mode?

I took pictures last night & this morning, but this afternoon - when I turn the camera on the lens goes in and out 3 or 4 times then I get a message on the screen that says turn camera off and back on. I have done that repeatedly, took out the battery, plugged the bettery into its charger, nothing works. I got this for Christmas just a couple years ago, so its not that old. What is going on? I need an answer ASAP. I have flown across the coutnry to see my brandnew grand son for the holiday weekend for the first time & now I can't take pictures! HELP! Please write sallies2 at the yahoo.

Answer:My cybershot won't turn back on

Sony camera problem.

This could be happening for several reasons. The camera could have a software /firmware fault, or it could be a problem with something preventing the lens from moving as it should.
But it's just as likely to be the Li-ion battery not holding a charge as it used to.
If you have a mains adapter, try that instead of the battery, see if it works then.
You may need to buy a new battery, as they don't last for more than a couple of years, especially with heavy use.
If you can get the screen on using the mains adapter, go into the menu and do a 'factory reset'. Take the memory stick out first.
All faults are repairable, but you would do well to get a quote first, as a new camera may be cheaper, (unfortunately).
The pictures on your memory stick are not affected by camera faults, as a rule, but if you have another one, try it, just in case there is a problem with the edge connector on it.

Have you tried charging the device? Maybe the battery is drained. Updates drain the battery very fast.
Try charging it, it should force the device to open.

I recent bought a new PC, with Windows 7.  I gave my old PC (still in great shape), with Windows XP Professional, to a friend who lives 200 miles away. While mostly a novice, he is getting along well with it except for one issue -  sound.  With my phone and email help he bought and installed a pair of Logitek speakers using the "pea green" stereo output jack on the PC.  He receives the Windows sign-on music loud and clear each time he turns the PC on.  However, when he surfs to a website which includes audio with the visual (you tube, etc.) he sees the visual information, but hears no audio.  I was using the PC, when I had it, to input and edit external audio, and I had probably reset some of the software switching. Working with him on the phone, I have not been able to talk him through the sound windows to effect a fix, since I can't see his XP screen. Can someone provide us a step by step sequence of instructions (click START, click CONTROL PANEL, click...) to go into the software, and reconnect audio coming from internet sources to the speakers?

Answer:Need help to turn audio back on.

Go to control panel. Select "System". Select hardware tab. Select "device manager". Scroll down to sound, video controllers. Open sound video controllers. Is there a yellow circle with an exclamation point in it? If so, your missing a sound card, or on board sound driver.

Hi, a few weeks ago I came home a few hours after having used my computer in the morning to find it off. It would not turn on. I unplugged everything and took off the side panel and found the PSU still warm. I read around on similar postings on this forum and decided it was my PSU. I bought a new one. Still didn't turn on. However, the f-lock led on my keyboard was lit up when the switch on the PSU was flipped on. So I e-mailed my motherboard company, Epox. I recieved some directions that would get rid of electricity still in the board such as holding the power button down for 10 seconds, setting the cmos to 2-3 for a few seconds and putting it back onto 1-2. One of the directions was to remove the round cmos battery, which i did not do because I was unable to reach it enough to remove it. I also took it completely apart and replugged everything in. No such luck. So, I bought another mobo, one just like it but the chipset was nforce3 250 instead of nforce3 ultra. Supported the same hardware, though. Still will not work. So, now i'm wondering if it's the power button on my case. I am probably going to plug my friend's case's power button into my mobo and see if it turns on.
>>>>To summarize-
1)Computer mysteriously turns off.
2)Buy new PSU.
3)Fiddle around with old mobo, but end up buying new one.
4) Still will not turn on. And when I say won't turn on, i mean nothing turns on, moves, makes noise, or lights up.

An easy way to troubleshoot the case power switch is to completely disconnect it from your motherboard. Then take a regular screwdriver, and just quickly touch (short) the two pins that the case's power switch usually connect to.

Hopefully your system will fire up, and you'll know you have a dead power switch!

Before I found all of the USeful info here on the
MSblast virus I was trying to fix the problem of the RPC restarting my computer..

It got to the point where I disabled the RPC in the COMPUTER MANAGEMENT Tool under services for my one and only hardware profile.. DOh..not a smart move...

Now when I start up, either in normal or safe mode,
most of my critical windows services just dont run.

My question is this :

Is there a way to get these services started up or enable them again so I can run windows normally and apply the MSblast fix.?

Basically, I think XP needs the RPC service to even consider allowing me to enable it again..
Thanks for any help.

Hi guys!

New here, just put Windows 7 on my laptop on Sunday. I'm really liking it thus far.

One thing I noticed maybe just today. When the screen shuts off due to time or the lid being closed, it doesn't seem to want to turn back on. I can put into standby and bring it back out and it works just fine. But, I'd rather not have to do that all the time.

It's a Dell Inspiron E1505 with a ATI Radeon X1400 video card if that helps at all.

If you need more info, let me know. Thanks!

Hi,
I've just recently had this happen, but I've been here enough to know I may have contracted a nasty.

Last week my system started hanging up and plain not responding. My wireless aircard refused to work in a manner like it was telling me that it was already in use, when it wasn't even plugged in! I couldn't get much to work right so I rebooted in safe mode, ran a couple of scans, which found nothing, rebooted in normal mode and my aircard was working again. Yay.
It worked normal except for the Windows pop up box that says you are offline kept popping up, and I couldn't close it unless I connected to the net via my aircard. Now my AVG has been switched off and I can't get it to turn back on, and my surfing via aircard is noticably slower. And, my power icon in the tray has gone away.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P-105, 32 bit processor, Vista Home Premium, SP 1.
I also have A Squared, AdAware, AVG (free edition), Malware Bytes, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware installed.

I use this laptop for work and now I'm afraid to put in passwords, account numbers, etc.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer:My AVG has been turned off and I can't turn it back on!

Just an update.
I downloaded + ran the Kaspersky scanner and it found nothing, but yet I've lost the power icon and the internet connection icons in the task tray.
It still get a black screen for a long time on start up from sleep mode.

I'm not sure if I'm infected, or have something going wrong.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

Hi. I have a Epson Workforce WF-3640 printer. I was in the middle of printing out my son's term paper, when I heard it stop working. Noticed it was off. Tried to turn back on. Nothing. Check cord to make sure connected securely at back of printer and at outlet. Also check for a tripped breaker. And nothing. I just bought this brand new from Best Buy in February. Please help.
Thank-You

Answer:Printer won't turn back on

If the printer is getting any power I would try:

A different outlet.
A different power cord.
Checking to see if the printer is still under warranty with the manufacturer and/or Best Buy.

Recently when I installed the GTX 750 Ti into a pre-built PC (HP Compaq 6000 Pro MT) the PC would not boot. After leaving the power supply plugged in after I tried many times to turn on the PC the fans started to run at max power. Now whenever I plug in the power supply the fans run at full power the disk drive works and whatever is plugged into the PC like a keyboard or something it works. But when I press the power button the computer does not boot. I've tried to uninstall the GPU and it won't boot. I've unplugged everything from the MB. I never shocked the computer either.

Answer:After installing GPU PC will not turn back on.

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphic card uses 60W and requires a minimum of a 300W power supply.
The HP Compaq 6000 Pro Microtower PC has a 320W power supply.

I don't believe insufficient wattage is part of the problem.
It's my guess you damaged something or didn't properly seat the graphic card or didn't properly connect it to the monitor.

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Change the display output location by using the dedicated hotkey. This allows you to switch between viewing output on the external display, the computer display, and both displays.

Different models have different key combinations. Please let me know the exact model of yours so that I can be more specific.

My pc runs just fine untill i try to play a game, then after 5-15 minutes the pc crashes as if it has lost power, and tries to turn itself back on only to crash again instantly. I have to wait for about 10 minutes before the pc will start again. I have an i5 4690k CPU @3.50 Ghz and a GTX 980, as well as 16 gigs of RAM and an MSI "overclocking" motherboard. My CPU temps have been quite high at times, up to ~80 ish degrees celsius, but the crash has also occured at ~65-70 which should be fine as far as i know.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone,It seems that my XPS 9550 has a motherboard issue. I have got this laptop for several months before this problem happen. At first, the power button needs to pressed twice before the computer can turn on. Pressing it once will only cause the button to light up and fans to start spinning for only seconds. Then, after about a week, the problem got worse. I have to static discharge the BIOS and charge the computer for about 12 to 24 hours to get it working again. The light indicator did show that the CMOS battery is dead several times, and I had the CMOS battery replaced, but still no luck. I have run the diagnostics many times, but everything seems perfect. And I can get into the OS once the computer powers on.en.community.dell.com/.../This post points out a similar problem, but I think it has nothing to do with the battery or most of the motherboard components.Does anyone have encountered this before? Any advice will be appreciated.- Peter

So I had a problem with my T500's backlight initially and long story short, disassembling the computer has now caused the problem in the title. Whenever I plug in the battery/charger and push the power button, the fan will spin and the hdd will whirr a bit, but then after about 3 seconds, the fan will stop and the hdd will click off and cease whirring. The computer will no longer respond to the power button regardless of how many times nor how long the power button is held. I'm looking directly at the wires that carry power. Everything seems to be plugged in. I did the lenovo power trick (IE the 10 one second presses followed by the 30 second long press) and the computer does the 1-3-3-1 beep when I take out the RAM. The monitor is not plugged into it in any way, shape, or form. I do not know if this affects it. However, I have tried attaching the monitor and it still does this. Is there a piece that may have been knocked loose or something? I'm willing to try anything right now because at this point it's a literal brick now.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T500 will turn on for roughly 3 seconds, then turn off and stay off.

Hi npesina, welcome to the forums,

there could be different reasons for the system behaving the way you describe, my suggestions;

remove all hard, SSD and optical drives to see if you experience the same,
remove all RAM, without replacing the drives, and test to see if you receive a system beep code,
remove all components which had previously been removed to test again.

The ultimate test would be to remove everything attached to the mainboard including the CMOS (BIOS) battery excluding the power socket, CPU and the fan. When you attach the power cable the system should come to life, the fan should run and beep codes sound.  After that its really just a case of putting the system back together one component at a time testing inbetween each component replacement, leave the main battery and CMOS battery until last to save having to always connect / disconnect the keyboard in order to turn the system on.

If at any point you experience the same issue as now it may well be that the component you replaced at that point or it's attachment socket on the mainboard  is the culprit.

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

Answer:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I have configured ad-hoc network for internet sharing from my PC. Normally I start it by

As I noticed the hotspot is automatically turned off when I turn off WiFi adapter. So I have two questions:

How do I turn on WiFi by command line, so that I can control it from various commandline scripts?
How do I configure the script for WiFi for autostarting hotspot whenever WiFi is turned on?

netsh wlan ...

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

Greetings all, so lately I've been having some problems with my Dell Vostro A860 that runs Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit service pack 2. Anyway recently I've been having problems with my laptop. I often leave my laptop on while I'm around the house doing things, mainly it's downloading or running a virus check, but when I return the screen is off (which is good, I set my screen to turn off after a few minutes) but when I try to get the screen to turn on again by pressing a key on the keyboard or clicking the touchpad or moving it nothing happens. I can't get the screen to turn back on and so I am forced to hard reset my laptop which I really don't like to do. When I start up the computer again it works fine but I notice that not much of my downloads or scan have been completed like the computer froze pretty early on.

At first I thought it was a virus or something so I posted on the appropriate forums on here, here is the link to that topic:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic414131.html

Unfortunately it appears that this isn't the problem so now I'm here trying to find help to resolve this issue. I hope someone out there knows the cause of this problem and a way I can fix it. Thanks in advance!

1st time post. Rant warning. If you are contemplating building a computer, I urge you to reconsider. Read on.

I would like to begin by cursing our friendly network administrator to a lifetime supply of spam. He?s responsible for my descent into the seventh circle of hell. You see, I was once happy. Blissfully unaware and perfectly content with my ignorance. And he RUINED it. And all because I told him my home computer died.

Occasionally we would bump into each other at Home Depot and chat about guy stuff like cars. He was aware that I am capable with a wrench. Hence he suggested I build a computer. ?It?s like snapping together Legos? he says. ?You?ll get a great computer for a better price than Dell?. ?Wow, that would be a neat project for me and my 11 year old son? I reply. Not to mention I get to save a few bucks, right? The descent begins?..

I won?t bore you with all the gritty details of the component search but suffice to say it was a grueling 3 days. I managed to beat my stingy $450.00 budget cap by about $40.00. Here?s what I got:

Chaintech 7NJL6 MB $30.00
AMD Sempron 2600 $83.00
Ultra 512MB DDR400 PC3200 $50.00
Enermax Mid Tower Case $58.00
Maxtor 60GB / 7200 / 2MB / ATA-133 EIDE Hard Drive $40.00
GIGABYTE ATI RADEON 9250 Video Card, 128MB DDR $46.00
XP home $83.00
Fans and CPU paste $20ish?
SUM TOTAL w/shipping and taxes around $410.00

Re-using CDRW, DVD, and monitor saved a little, but I probably coul... Read more

Answer:Warning to all newbies, turn back now

One thing I would say is building a PC is fairly straight forward, BUT alot of reading and planing is well worth the effort on your first build, when I built my first pc I had a few teething problems but re-reading guides ( alot of good online guides are available ) and going slow helped.

OH and Welcome to MajorGeeks

My Spectre 360 made a fizzling sound then turned off. There was a slight odor from the vent. It will not turn on. It's completely dead and even the charge light does not come on when plugged in. I did a search to trouble shoot the problem and it seems that this is a very common issue with this particular laptop. I'm disappointed that HP hasn't reached out to owners with this model to rectify the problem. I have been a very loyal HP customer for many years and spend more on their computers because I know they will last. My previous HP cost about $2300 ( it's still kicking) and this one was around $1000. I'm 8 months out of warranty and frustrated that I spent the extra money only to have a really big expensive paperweight. if anyone has any input or solutions I would really appreciate it.

Good Morning everyone,

My husband I and a Cyberpower GX1107 I7 920, which we purchased in June 2009 (not even a year ago). He was using it this morning, just using firefox visiting a website he has gone to every day, when it suddenly shut down. We let it sit for about 10 minutes, and attempted to turn it back on, but nothing would happen.

We tested the electrical outlet, and its fine. We attempted to turn it on again, and the light on the front would come on for a second, but then go off, and the computer will not come on. It's like it gets power for a second, but then refuses to acknowledge anything.

Do we need a new power supply? What else could have gone wrong? I checked the warranty information, and parts are warrantied for a year, so it should not have died this early.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! If you need any other details, I'll try to provide them.

Thank you so much in advance.

There was an electrician in the house, who cut the power temporarily. After the power came back on, my monitor will NOT turn back on. I tried the thing where you drain the static power (unplug from wall, hold down power button for 30 seconds) and nothing worked. It was on a surge protector, and everything else on the surge protector is functioning fine. Is there some fail safe that I don't know about? Or do you think something in the monitor was fried. I have 2 months left on my warranty, but obviously that doesn't cover shipping which I'm thinking will be at least 50 dollars to get it to them. Please help!

Can you try a different power cord?

Hi, having a problem with my Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo 600.

Last night i turned the computer off when i went to bed. When i turned on the computer again the next morning, the power went on, but nothing showed up on the screen. We connected the computer to another screen to be sure that it was not the screens problem.
And we came to a conclusion that the problem sits inside the computer.

Anybody know anything i can du to have any remote chance to get this computer working again?

Thanks

I've already consulted Samsung about this issue, and they want me to Refresh (windows 8) my laptop. I have important programs and I DON'T WANT TO DO THAT.

Started about half an hour ago, I plugged my laptop into the wired connection because it was downloading 6 GB. Plugging in a cord activates Airplane mode. In theory, once out of Airplane Mode, WiFi will turn back on. NORMALLY IT DOES, BUT NOW IT DOESN'T. THIS IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF.

PLEASE HELP ME. IT'S A BRAND NEW LAPTOP, NOT TO MENTION MY SECOND ONE OF IT.

Answer:WiFi turned off and won't turn back on.

Is this a second computer with the same issue?

I would suggest contacting Microsoft as it seems to be a software issue and not hardware. Especially if you can turn on the wireless manually.

I just built this for my friend:
Build for a friend

It was up and running for a couple hours with win 7 64 and after playing wow for about an hour, it just shut off on him and won't turn back on. I thought the cpu might have overheated or something, but it still won't turn on now that it is the next day, so I don't think that is it but can't be sure. I reconnected all the power connections and reseated the RAM but no dice. Suggestions on what to do next?

Reset the BIOS. If no go, try a different PSU. There any light on the board?

This morning i went to start my comp. up and i heard a noise quite like something was touching my fan on my video card and i put my hand to see what happened and i touched the fan and it stopped and the computer wont turn back on.

Any suggestions

Video card: Nvidia GT 220

Please help.

Answer:Computer wont turn back on

Yea, don't put your hand into a running PC. First thing is first, check for any cut/shorted wires. Next, reseat all components. Third, pull the power plug, press the power button, let it set for a minute, then plug it back up and see if it will fire back up.

Hi I bought my Toshiba laptop about two years ago from best buy. I was playing a game on it and it froze up shut down and won't turn back on no matter what I do. The orange light just keeps flashing five times on the front of the computer if I press the power button. I am using win 10. It won't turn on if I take the battery out either.

Here's what happened.  I was playing League of Legends, I had 60 (capped) FPS and then it took a sudden dive to 7 FPS.  I decided to give it a few seconds, but it persisted.  I decided that I would just leave the game and reload it.  Upon leaving the game, the computer just blackscreens.  I didn't look to see if my keyboard was still lit up, but after about 15 seconds of waiting, I took the battery out.  Now my computer just won't start back up.  I haven't had a whole lot of problems with the computer aside from adapting to W8 and that I started having absolutely unbearable ping spikes (up to 1.6k persistant ping from ~90) on it starting about 4 weeks ago.  The main concern about all of this is that my computer that I've had since early February just won't turn back on.  Could anyone provide some help, or if there's a way I can restore my computer?  I'm not super computer savvy, but I'm not an idiot when it comes to this stuff either.

Answer:Y580 Wont turn back on

Also, when I have my mouse plugged in and hit the power button, the lights on the mouse flash on for about a second then go out again.

I built this computer four years ago and while this has happened a few times over the last year, all times before this I could turn it on and it would be fine. I pressed the power button and instead of turning on the light near the power button flashed. I felt on the side of my computer where the CPU was located and it was hot. Not scalding but still pretty warm. I turned off the PSU, unplugged everything and proceeded to dust out my computer. Once it had cooled down I plugged it back up and it did not turn on, even the lights near the power button did not flash. It made a slight sound similar to the sound an older television would make before the picture showed up, but that was it. While the standby light on the motherboard was on the fans were not. I cant exactly remember why but I unplugged a cord labeled jpwr2 located near the CPU and heatsink and when I pressed the reset button on my computer the fans turned on. You really need to read the documentation fort your motherboard.Find out what thing uses the  other 12 volt plug. Here is a link about power connectors on motherboards.http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=31105&seqNum=4Best guess is that you have a graphics card that failed.

The only thing which does not work is the LCD. The situation is like the LCD goes to energy save mode that it is black but you could still see little content. I need to use the external monitor now and the external screen works fine. I am not sure what went wrong. Could anyone help? Many thx!!! cheers

As stated above, recently my laptop shut down and refuses to turn back on. More specifically, it shut down when I plugged a wired usb mouse into the usb port. I've tried turning it on with and without the mouse plugged in, to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What is the make and full model ID for that laptop ? Should be on a label underneath.

Try powering it up with just the battery (assuming it has some charge), charger alone and changer and battery together. Any change ?

Hi!
Recently, I upgraded my Laptop to Win 10. However, because a program doesn't work in Windows 10, I decided to go back to Windows 8.1. I did it through the "Settings" that you can find by clicking the "Start" button. After the computer restarts for Windows 8.1, it's all normal - Until after I enter in my password, the screen becomes black. The screen's not broken, because the mouse cursor is still there. I restarted it a coupon of times, took out the battery and everything, but it still won't work. Luckily, I still have most of stuff on my old HDD, so I can just use it. But I really want to use my SSD since it's much faster. I really hope someone can help me.
My laptop:
Sony Vaio S Series SVS151E2AP
Thanks.

I'm posting from my laptop at the moment. The rig in my sig is not working.

Tonight, I was just browsing the net and suddenly it just shut off. I figured it was just a crash, so I turned it back on, it turned on for about 4 seconds and then shut back off. So I waited a minute, turned it on, it stayed on for 2 seconds and shut off. And it got progressively worse from there, until it did nothing when I hit the power button.

On the motherboard there is a yellow led that is flashing somewhat erradically when I turn on the power supply switch. I "believe" that it's usually solid, though I only really remember the blue led that's always on.

I'm thinking that it's either a fried motherboard or power supply. And I want to lean toward motherboard since the led's are still on, indicating power from the psu.

Can anyone tell me whats going on?

Answer:Computer shut off, won't turn back on

Sounds like PSU to me. If your motherboard died it wouldn't progressively get worse, it would just stop working. Get a new PSU
