Sorting Photos in Windows Photo Gallery

Question: Sorting Photos in Windows Photo Gallery

I have a mumber of photos with the wrong Date Creation dates. I have changed the Date Taken field in Windows Photo Gallery but the photos will not sort - it seems that the Date Creation date maybe dictating the order - any ideas how to change the date so that the sort can be made to create the oldest date to the latest date?

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a home network with Vista 32bit Home Basic on both the desktop and laptop. In the past week, I am experiencing a problem with not being able to view recently uploaded photos on the laptop. The photos are showing on the desktop which is directly connected to the Kodak camera dock. When I am on my laptop and try to access the newly uploaded photos, they just aren't there. This problem started in March. All the previously uploaded photos are visible on the laptop. I also am not seeing the April folder I just created today when I uploaded a few pictures. I am very frustrated with this problem as I work from my laptop and often need to access photos and scans. Now I have to do all my work from the desktop since it is the only computer which can see the pictures and scans. Please help.

I have Vista Home Premium with Microsoft Photo Gallery on my Dell Inspriron 1721 laptop. I?m using a machine to transfer slides to a SD card then uploading them to Photo Gallery. Photos transfer Ok except the order of the photo gets scrambled somehow during upload. In other words, the photos on the SD card are in chronologically order but after uploading, when I view them in Photo Galley, the order is all mixed up. I know you can manual move them around but it?s hard to be sure of the original order and it is very time consuming when you have hundreds of photos. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix them. FYI I would call myself a novice user of Photo Gallery.

Answer:Uploading photos from a SD memory card into Photo Gallery scrambles order of photos

Will the Photo Gallery sort by name? You could prefix the photo names with numerical sequence. A utility like
Introduction - Bulk Rename Utility will do it easily. It's free.

Edit: if that looks too busy, the multi-renamer in FreeCommander is a bit simpler to use. [c] before the name prepends a number starting at what you select and incrementing by what you choose. Just press F2 when in the folder.

I store and view pictures on my computer with "Windows Live Photo Gallery" (WLFG) and do email with "Outlook", which is selected as my email program of choice. In fact, I don't have any other email programs on my machine.

If I select pictures from my files, there is a button on WLFG which says "email". When you press it, a window comes up headed "Preparing files" and you then chose the file size and press "attach", when the file/s are supposedly attached to a new email ready for sending. This is what I gather from the help file. However, the new email is nowhere to be found. I have searched for it in Outlook, and in WLFG, but it seems it has never been created.

Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: Sending photos from Windows Live Photo Gallery by email

Try this method which involves opening WLM first and starting a new message: http://email.about.com/od/livemaild...Gallery-But-With-Effects-In-Win-Live-Mail.htm

I have had a problem with my Gateway NV73 laptop where I would get a BSOD whenever I was viewing video on the internet, viewing pictures in my photo editing program and now after about 5 minutes of just using the internet. The BSOD would come up in a square in the center of the screen and dissappear within seconds. Then the system would still show the power light as on but a blank screen and unresponsive. I would press and hold power button until shutdown and try to restart but only the fan sound was working but nothing else. And after about 30 to 40 minutes later it would boot up just fine, but would then crash after minutes of using it. I tried to get the info needed from the dump files but I literally had to do the whole process stated above many times and I saved the minidump files to my network drive so I could post this on my desktop computer. Please help, I am pulling my hair out trying to figure this out.

Gateway Laptop Model NV73
AMD processor
3GB Ram
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM
Laptop is about 17 months old

I attached a text file with the contents of one of the minidump files but also pasted the results below:

Answer:BSOD w/ viewing photos w/ Windows Live Photo Gallery error 0x0000001e

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

It's annoying to discover what looks like duplicate photo side by side in Photo Gallery. My understanding is that these are just thumbnails of the actual photo file which is stored elsewhere. However, when I've tried to delete one I've deleted the file itself. Question:

Why is this happening? Is it because I've saved the photo to another folder or application and so Photo Gallery displays it twice?

How do you know which thumbnail is linked to the actual file (maybe both are)?

How to avoid or better to just not worry about it?

Answer:Duplicate photos in Photo Gallery

Hello, right click and check out its properties .

The new Photos app in Windows 10 (while allowing a variety of editing functions), does not allow me to add a caption, i.e., update the Title attribute of a JPEG file. The old Windows Photo Gallery in Windows 7 was very useful in this regard, since I could update a number of the metadata (EXIF) fields.

How can I do this in Windows 10? Has Microsoft just removed this feature? Seems a retrogade step.

Thanks.

Hi, I am runnning Vista Home on my system. On C drive is Windows Photo Gallery and when I downloaded W Live Mail, Live Photo Gallery came along as well onto C drive. Prior to this, as a back-up I had installed Picasa on drive H. So, in effect I have three lots of photos on my system. I was wanting to get rid of W Photo Gallery but when I tried deleting just one photo, it also deleted the same photo in Live Gallery and Picasa. How can I keep W Live Gallery and Picasa but delete W Photo Gallery. Any help / assistance appreciated. Peter

Answer:Photo Gallery vs. Windows Live Photo Gallery?

Hi TheGreatGazoo,

Welcome to the forum.

It really just depends on what features are more useful to you. It seems that Windows Live Photo Gallery will work seamlessly with Live Spaces.

You can compare the features from the two at these links to see which one you like better.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop. Fairly new to computers, but in the last 2 years I have loaded photos from a digital camera, and also from a scanner. I have successfully emailed some of them. Yesterday, when trying to get the full knowledge about how to use the Photo Gallery, I realised that I have Windows Photo Gallery, and also Windows Live Photo Gallery installed. It seems that both can be used without any problem. However, when I have been in 'Live Gallery' a message will appear that '.... Live Gallery has stopped working.' followed by a prompt- should I report this to help with a repair, which I always do;then another prompt to close the programme. Next time I use Live Gallery everything is fine, then eventually the same prompts again appear.
Am I doing something incorrectly ? From what I have gathered trawling around here, the Live Gallery has extra features not found in Photo Gallery.
Thanks for any forthcoming simple guidance and explanations.

Since Windows Live is an internet connected program, I'm wondering if you're just getting the same error message I get several times a day with Internet Explorer. Lately, IE has been recovering on it's own rather than saying it has to shut down.
I assume you have SP2 installed since that is required.

I also suspect that something isn't quite right with my Folder set-up here;

It seems that any time I edit a photo in Windows 10 Photos (i.e. crop, filters, etc.), then save a copy of the edited photo, Windows 10 automatically reduces the resolution of my photo. In Gallery, some of my photos don't fill the viewing frame. They can be enlarged by both Zoom and right-click "Re-size" but both fixes are only good for one viewing, not permanent. Without resorting to Paint or other external equipment, is there a way to get a permanent enlargement in Gallery?

Answer:re-sizing photos in Windows Gallery

Re-size saves in the same folder with the size appended to the file name.
Zoom is not re-sizing but zooming in to the image so the proportions fill the frame. You's have to crop and change the proportions to fill the frame.

When I double click on a jpg file in Explore it comes up in Windows Photo Gallery - which is what I want.

But when I double click on a gif file it always opens Windows Photo Gallery in thumbnail view and not even in the directory I'm using.

How can I change it so that it just shows me the gif image I've clicked? There don't seem to be any settings to change - and why does it do one thing for jpg's and another for gifs?

I don't want to change file associations to another application as it's very quick for viewing files full screen and I can then subsequently open them easily in Photoshop or whatever if I need to.

Change the .gif file association to Internet Explorer. That's where they should be displayed. It will show the animation.

Hi,

I have a HP Compaq 6720s Lap Top computer with Vista, recently, I noticed that several of my programs, i.e, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker as well as Windows Media Player are not functioning correctly. With Windows Photo Gallery and Movie Maker, I received the following error message everytime I try to access the program-- This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

I have gone to several website and have downloaded suggested fixes and still can not access these programs. I'm not sure if this has compounded the problems and now I can't watch any videos or pull up my pictures on my computer. I have two disks that were provided with the purchase of the computer 1- Application and Driver Recovery DVD For Windows Vista and 2- Operating System DVD for Windows Vista Business. I don't want to have to do a total re-installation to get these programs going again, but would appreciate any assistance.

My computer received a virus, which was caught by Windows Defender. As a result, some files in both my C: and J: (external hard drive) were quarantined / deleted. I got my C: working again via a diagnostic/fix disk, but my J; was no longer registering on my Windows Explorer and every time I tried to reboot it froze up my computer.

Long story short, I have been told J: may be recoverable via a data specialist (in a clean room) at a very high cost ($800-$1200). Not much of value on the drive (from what I recall), but there is about 1 year worth of photos.

I've noticed that my Windows Photo Gallery has the images saved, but only as Read Only and I cannot copy or move them because the file path was to my J: drive. Any idea how I can transfer the photos back to my C: for safe keeping?

Thanks in advance...

What version of Photo Gallery are you using, latest is Windows Live Photo Gallery 2009 Build 14.0.8064.206 and can be found when in Photo Gallery clicking the down arrow by help icon, then about photo gallery.

If you click File > Import from Scanner or Camera, does that let you import the image?

Unfortunately, the only time I did it, I was blown away by the fact that whatever I deleted from the Gallery was also deleted from my hard drive regardless of where I had saved it. Fortunately I had some pix saved on a cd. This just seems crazy to have all that hard drive space taken up by photos I don't need to be in the Gallery. Help!

How can i delete the history of windows photo gallery (thumbnails) without loosing the photo

Answer:windows photo gallery

You can't remove photos from windows gallery without them being deleted from the PC. It works the same as the new Libraries. You can remove a folder without it being deleted from the PC but not sub folders or single images. To remove a single image you'd need to create a new folder then cut and paste the image from the original folder ( that windows photo gallery associates with) TO THE NEW FOLDER that windows gallery isn't associated with. It will then dissappear from windows photo gallery and your image will be in the New Folder.
Have a look under Remove a Folder from Photo Gallery.
Try moving (cut and paste) a single photo to a new folder then it will dissappear in gallery. Don't associate the new folder with it. If you do happen to delete a photo it should be in the recycle bin. That's neither here or there, though, as you have backed up all your photos?

When I open a folder of pictures and plan on viewing it with Windows photo Gallery, instead of it going straight to the picture, it goes to the Window Gallery with all the pictures that is in the computer. I just want to view that only picture not anything else. Can someone help me? Thank you!

Answer:Need help with Windows Photo Gallery

I think this is what you mean. Double click on the one picture you want to open. If it opens in the wrong program, come back here.

hi - i recently had a crash with my computer. i took it to get repaired by geek squad but the idiot removed all the photos from my gallery. now i'm re-importing those same photos and there is a default setting that makes them ALL come out the same size and not the true size of the image in my camera. i cannot figure out how to change the "pixels" default setting so the images come out their natural true self. can you help me?

thanks!

I'm not sure what you mean by that, can you explain? Are you referring to the size of the pictures when you view them in Windows Photo Viewer? If so, there's a button on the bottom of the viewer to switch between actual size and making the image fit on your screen.

Just had one of those moments when a problem appears out of nowhere for some unfathomable reason.I have my photos stored and organised in the Picture folders and have a short cut to Pictures. So normally - click short cut - open a folder within Pictures and open an image which opens in windows gallery. This normally works with jpg, tiff and raw (Nikon raw codec installed)But after a year of working like this suddenly if I clk to open a Tiff I am taken to all the pictures on the PC in Windows Gallery itself where I then have to search for the photo again and clk to open it from there.(which it does)NEF & jpg still open straight from the picture folder?Any ideas please assuming you can see what I am trying to say.

I have recently purchased i new laptop with built in Vista which includes Windows Photo Gallery.

When I double-click on an image (whether it be .JPG or .GIF) it opens up the whole of windows photo gallery and not the picture that i choose

However, when i right click on the picture and left click on 'preview', it comes straight up with the picture.

Is there a way i can get it to preview the photo by default when i double click on the image?

Many Thanks, Andy, Guildford.

Greetings!

Quick question! How do you import photos into windows photo gallery that are on disk? It won't let you add them if they're already in the Pictures folder. And if import them from outside pictures folder it just includes that outside folder.

The help is hideous for this app! If somebody has a hot idea could you please share it with me??

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Need a little help with Windows Photo Gallery

I'm sorry but I don't fully understand your problem. From what I'm understanding, you are trying to copy pictures from a cd to your Pictures folder but it will not let you because there are already files in there with the same name? In that case, a prompt will show up and ask if you want to keep the originals, replace the files, or change the name of the new files you are importing. If they are not the same pictures but do have the same name, choose the third option that will let you keep all the files but it will simply change the files' names.

Hope I was of some help.

Hi all, I was just playing with opening programs to see what was in them and tried to open the above program, I was then informed that DEP was closing it down. The 'help box' opened and I followed the instructions to turn off DEP for Windows Photo Gallery but it informs me that I can't because it has to run with DEP enabled. If I go to 'pictures' and then 'sample pictures' in my 'User' folder the same pictures are there, that are in the Photo Gallery and they open OK. Any suggestions please? P.

Why can I only print an A4 photo in HP Photo Essential & Sony PMB but in Windows Photo Gallery I can have photos in any size. In both, I select the photo and in options select the size e.g.: 4x6 paper etc but although it indicates printing nothing appears. It does not make sense to me? I hope there is someone out there who can help.If the settings are ok in WP Gallery should it not follow the same for HP Photo Essential and PMB and print all sizes other than A4. I run Vista Home Premium & my printer is a HP Photosmart 26100 all in one. I look forward to someone telling me where I am going wrong and how to sort Thank you

Maybe you need to be select the size of the print from within your HP Photosmart Printer settings. That is what I would try - I may be wrong of course.

I not sure I am in the right forum, here goes anyway. I use widows photo gallery for all my pictures, I find it to be user friendly and pretty easy. I have a problem with it adding duplicate pictures. I just spent almost an hour deleting one by one all the duplicate pictures it had listed. How can I set it up to where it does not add duplicates. On my other machine that I just upgraded from Me to Xp, it will automatically ask you if you want to accept any or all of duplicate pictures. That is such a great feature. Why would Microsoft leave that off in Vista? Any way can some one please help me with this...it is a pain in the ass to hand delete every duplicate picture....thanks for the help...

Hello everyone,

This is all very new to me, so I apologise If I come across as being a bit dim when it comes to computers.

My pc is Vista Home Premium 32bit and I have Canon Digital Photo Professional on it, which I constantly work with. I also have Windows photo Gallery which I am not very keen on at all. My question is: Can I delete WPG from my computer? I want to have a good clean up and I find that if I delete a photo from WPG it also deletes the same one from my Canon folders. If it is not possible to delete wpg then am I able to turn it off?

The other problem that I have is when I send photos to my mum. She saves them from email (all I know is that she saves as jpeg) but when she goes into her Windows Photo Gallery, it is opening my photos as thumbnails. So for some reason her computer is squashing the photos down. Whenever I send photos to other people, there isnt a problem.

I hope my post make sence and if anybody needs any more information I will try to find it. As I say I'm a bit dim when it comes to computers

Regards
Maisey

Answer:Windows Photo Gallery help

First of all Unfortunately you cannot uninstall Windows Photo Gallery because it is Part of Vista and it is very hard to do so and even then you may get errors and Possibly Blue Screens.

And can I ask how is your Mum saving the Pictures has she tried saving them as Bitmap instead of jpeg?

Hope This Helps,

Hi there,

I just recently did a format and reinstall of Vista 64 Ultimate and i've been having a problem with windows photo gallery. If theres a bunch of new pictures on my desktop and i go to click on one it will take around 30secs to load and and when it loads it will just freeze until it loads the others.

I've never had this problem before and it only seems to happen on my desktop. If i view a new image on my other hard drives they load instantly, it just seems to happen on my windows drive.

Anyone know what causes this to happen?.

EDIT: I tried windows live photo gallery and that works fine, but i would like to have the original working as well.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

Hi, whenever i've wanted to view a picture on Vista, i've simply gone to the Pictures folder and double clicked on an image to get a (full screen) preview of just that image, but since i reinstalled Vista yesterday, when i double click on a picture file it takes me to Windows Photo Gallery where all my pics are, then i have to right click and select Preview, all i want is a preview with a double click (like it is on XP)(and it was on vista). Is there any way to change it so it doesn't go to the gallery it just gives a preview with a double click.

Answer:Windows Photo Gallery help

Hello taylorsmommie, my name is Rick and I work with the Windows Outreach Team. I have been looking into your issue and am not quite sure what the trouble is. The first thing I would do is to check and make sure that Windows Photo Gallery is your default image viewer. Start/Control Panel/Default Programs/Set Default Programs/Windows Photo Gallery. Click photo Gallery and set it as your default image viewer. From my experience when you open Photo Gallery and click on an image it opens the image centered in the window and if you have a scroll wheel on your mouse simply scrolling zooms in or out on the image. In addition the size of the image you are opening makes a difference as well. If the image is small and much less than the window than it will open centered, if the image is larger than the window it should open optimized to fit, thus filling the window. Let me know if any of those tips help out, if they don?t I can try something else to help.
Rick, Windows Outreach Team

(1) the pictures are too large and I don't know how to reduce the size
(2) I cannot find how to send the reduced pictures to email attachment ( or flashpen )
How can I keep track of this query ? ?

Answer:Advice on Windows Photo Gallery

Firstly contact the Forum Editor and ask him to remove your email address as it is likely to attract spam.
In Photo Gallery on the Create Tab you should find an email icon. You can then chose a size and it will then open your email client. However you want to make several smaller. You can use resize on the edit tab which will make your photo much smaller and should save it with a name of the smaller size.
Do you have another photo editing program?

C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Gallery\PhotoViewer.dll is not a valid Win32 application.
I have no idea how this came about, or how to fix it. I've tried rebooting from the install dvd, but the only way to repair according to that was to restore the entire computer.

Ive tried to restore to an earlier point, but the issue remains.

Ive done various command prompts and reboots, such as:

I was importing photos from my IPAD into windows live photo gallery. I have windows 7 operating system. There were 2 issues that arised. The first one was that the dates on the folder were in the american format, which is very confusing when you work purley off dates. If you click on the actual photo it will give you the australian format of the date, but the folder it is in has the american date format. I hope someone can help me with this issue. The second issue that arised was that when I went to import photos again into windows live photo gallery it reimported a group of photos that had already been imported. So I thought that was strange so I deleted the copies and clicked import all new photos and it did it again. I have 300 photos on the ipad and these 26 photos keep reimporting. I hope someone can help me thank you very much.

Hi - When I upload photos from my camera to Windows PhotoGallery, every photo shows up twice !! I have to manually go through and delete all the duplicates. Any thoughts as to why this might be happening ? I only click once on "Upload".
An associated question is this : Even after I've gone through and deleted all the duplicates, invariably some photos uploaded on a previous date (even months ago) will suddenly be duplicated and some even triplicated. This is frustrating to say the least, and I wish I knew what I was doing wrong.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Answer:Problem with Windows Photo Gallery

No way to know if its the camera or Gallery.

However, you could copy the photos from the camera to another part of your hard drive. Use Windows Explorer.

If they don't duplicate then, its Windows Photo Gallery doing it.

If they do duplicate, it has to do with your camera.

When you test things like this, you want to take one part of it out of the process. This helps troubleshoot what is happening.

When editing a picture, I keep getting this message: "changes to this picture can't be saved because Photo Gallery has experienced a problem." Hello Patch19, welcome to Vista Forums!

Let me get this straight, you made changes to "services" not knowing what you were doing and didn't create a restore point first and you have no idea what you changed.
See if doing a system restore to a point before you made the changes will sort it out, have a look at the tutorial at the link; be sure to post back to keep us informed.

Recently, I updated my Vista when my computer slowed down. Now, I can't open photographs with Photo Gallery (I can inconsistently see thumbnails) and I am not allowed to use pictures to create desktop backgrounds or anything. I have tried to find information on this, but all I find is complaints about yellow tinted pictures. Nothing I have found from Microsoft even references the problem much less has any suggested fixes.

Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?

Answer:Desperately need help with Windows Photo Gallery

try looking for file system errors press windows key and R type CMD in the box that opens type sfc /scannow note the space before/
If it fails to run you need to run it as administrator
Start all programs accessories Command Prompt
If errors are found repeat the scan a couple of time

I just put in a new GTX 295 video card and 4 gigs of ram. Now my windows photo gallery keeps crashing. It was fine before the new hardware.

Any ideas? I have not d/l any new codecs or anything like that.

I am running Vista x32.

Thanks
