Sort by date? And Folder missing files

Question: Sort by date? And Folder missing files

Ive got vista x64 and Im tryin to figure out how to sort a folder by the date I DLed the contents. In Xp it was np but I cant seem to get it work in vista. Ive tried Date Received Date Modified Date Taken... everything with Date in the sort type and none of em work they either dont change at all or just end up in abc order. What Im goin for is sorting the contents exactly by date and time of how they ended up in the folder. Any ideas? Also before I forget about it. Ive got a folder on an HDD that wasnt modified when I installed vista I installed vista on a completely new HDD. Now in windows explorer in vista that folder thats on a completely separate drive is missing roughly 100 files completely randomly. Not any specific order I can find to whats missing (date, abc, etc) theyre just not showin up. The file size of the folder doesnt indicate theyve been deleted they just arent showin up.

Preferred Solution: Sort by date? And Folder missing files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I open file explorer and select certain folders, it opens in the alpha sort. When I go to sort on dates, it takes forever in Windows 10, and has pretty much since launch. Don't remember this on Win7. Are there any switches I could throw, or other config changes I can make to address this?

I created a folder on my desktop and add images of books I have sold almost daily. With Windows XP, the images would stay in order as I added them, but with Windows 7 they are always in order of the image name.
I have tried using the different sort by date options, but they are always sorted by the image name (which is a 5 digit number). How can I sort them by the date I add them to the folder?
Thanks,
Fritz

Answer:How to sort images by date added to a folder

Hello Fritz, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would think that adding the column "Date last saved", then having the folder set to be sorted by it would do the trick.

Hope this helps,

I wish to save my old emails so I transfered them to a new folder. But although they are sorted as created by date order they will not sort into date order on my new folder just into name order which I do not want. How do I get them to sort into date received order.Help please.

Answer:EMails cannot sort into date order in folder

In the new folder, clicking the "Received" column header should sort the contents by date received. Clicking it again will toggle between oldest or newest date first.

In windows file explorer I am wondering if its possible to list folder first then have the last accessed files right under the folders afterwords. I need to have the ability to see folders first , then last used / modified files.

If i list folders first now, then the last accessed files comes down at the bottom.

I would like a folder and everything inside it to be sorted by Date Modified in an Ascending order. Can it be done with of without additional programs?

Answer:How do I mass sort files by Date Modified?

Hello.

This should be done by simply clicking Date Modified at the top of the folder window. For ascending order the arrow should be pointed down.

I desperately need to sort my files downloaded using DownThemAll by the date the file was added to the directory. Date created could have been months or years in the past. Date saved could have been months or years in the past. Is there a way to sort the files by the date the file was added to the directory. I need to download to the same general directory in order to avoid dups.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Answer:Solved: Sort Files In Dirctory By Date Added

Howdee to you too.
If it's in Windows explorer, just change the view to detail and press the date column to sort the either ascending or descending,
In Windows 7 you can show more columns by right clicking the top bar just check there, there are quite a few date options.
Hope you can use this

(Running Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1)
I'm a professional photographer and have recently begun shooting with two cameras simultaneously at events. They use different file names to avoid duplicate names/confusion, i.e. IMG_175000 and XMG_175000. Often times I'll take a photo with one camera and then take a photo immediately after it with the other camera and I'd like both of these images to be organized in the same subfolder and shown sequentially, but by default Windows Explorer lists all the "XMG_######" photos at the end and the IMG_###### photos at the beginning. I can manually sort each individual folder by going to "Sort by - Date" or even better, selecting "Sort by - More... and putting a check mark next to "Date Taken" so that it shows up in the Sort options (which it doesn't automatically) and then sorting by Date Taken, but since I'm dealing with hundreds of subfolders with hundreds of thousands of photo and video files I'd like a way to do this for all the files in these subfolders that isn't manual.

Is there a way to make Windows Explorer automatically arrange every file (both image and movie files) inside the various subfolders inside one root folder by Date or Date Taken instead of automatically always sorting them by name?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Making files in subfolders sort by "Date" or "Date Taken" by default?

Hello XMGING, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you could set a folder how you like it, then use the method in the tutorial below to apply it to all folders that use the same folder template.

Hi again.

I just bought a new 1TB drive. On my previous drive, everytime i (i.e) copy/paste files to that directory, it automatically sort itself out by Name. Now, it does sort by name but not if i don't click refresh or navigating to another folder and coming back to that directory. I've set it to sort by name. Is there something that's missing?

Thank you.

Answer:Files doesn't automatically sort by name in folder

I've got it sorted. Apparently, it doesn't automatically sort if it's in the main drive itself (K. If i have another directory (K:\Storage), it works flawlessly.

I've got a bunch of files that are all different names, but they have numbers appended on them. Example: filename_page1.jpg, filename_page2.jpg, filename_page3.jpg, etc.

What I would like to do is put these files that have the same name but different appending numbers into the same folder. So filename1_page1.jpg and filename1_page2.jpg would go into their own folder, and filename2_page1.jpg and filename2_page2.jpg would go into another folder.

I have 10s of thousands of these and am looking for something that can do this automatically. Does anyone know of a program that does this?

Answer:sort massive amounts of files into folder based on name?

Use search to locate files that match a specific mask, then just copy/move those to a folder, move on and do a search for the next mask, copy/move those, etc. Seems pretty simple...

As for a piece of software, who knows, but Windows search will do that for you pretty easily.

Hello there & Happy New Year.

I have encountered this particular inconvenience on the 2nd day of 2012 while i was transfering photos and files into my PC with Win7.

In my Win7 PC, all files/folders created or modified within Dec'2011 and earlier are now all grouped under as "A Long Time Ago". This happens when I changed the folder to be "Group by Date" or "Group by Date Modified" with a combo of "Sort by type". I tried sorting in different ways of view to see if I can get it back to what it should be. Then i realised even folder newly created on 25 Dec 2011 is also grouped as "A Long Time Ago" too. I am not sure if this is an intended feature.

The only helpful part is that i will still see the newer files in chronological order if I sort by date modified on top of group by date modified.

I have been using this setting for folder view even for Win XP. As for Win XP, i will get "Yesterday", "Last Week", "Last Month", "Last Year", "Two Years Ago" and ultimately the whole chunk of much older files under "A Long Time Ago". Such perfect chronological order.

I tried to google for a while and not much of returns to this issue I am having. Perhaps majority of people does not group their files/folders in such way. But for me, I like the way how it was displayed that I know i have edited/created/moved whichever files/folders last year, the previous month or ... Read more

Help! This should be easy but I can't get it to work.

I have a report that must group by Trip# and sort by ascending activity date all of the various activities that took place on multiple days of the trip.
Further, the trip with the earliest date must come first regardless of the Trip#.
I've accomplished getting the earliest starting date trip first and grouping its detail with a unique string made up of the earliest date of each trip formatted to YYYYMMDD+Trip#. This prints a trip total and works fine.

But the daily activity for the trip is out of date sequence.
Adding a Date field to the 'Sorting and Grouping' insists on breaking on and printing a sub-total for each of the trips activity dates.
Without the sorting & grouping by date the trip records are out of sequence even though the data source query is sorted ascending by activity date.

(see attachments that show the above)

The only solution I can think of is to create a sub-report sorted by activity date.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Answer:How do I delete files from a certain date from a certain folder?

The easiest way is to open Windows Explorer or Computer, navigate to the folder you want then click on the Date column heading to sort by date.
Once they are sorted, click on the first one to delete, then scroll down to the last one.
Hold down the Shift key and click on it.
That will select all the files between the first and last.
Then right click and Delete.

My computer got weird the other day. Mozilla was deleted and when I installed again it wasn't working right.

Long story short I restored my system to an earlier date, which usually works fine. This time all my bookmarks and saved passwords are gone. I just went through this lost passwords thing a few weeks ago and it was a nightmare. Is there a way I can get them back?

I haven't been happy with the bookmarks for along time. I can't seem to get them organized. Most everything is in "other bookmarks". I like to have about 6 folder that the bookmarks are stored in. For instance, if I'm paying bills I can look in the accounts folder.

Hi LST! I feel ur burden coz' it's one of the biggest problem I had during my very first encounter to system restore. First of what Operating System do you have?

Have you tried performing Undo my last System Restore? Performing this action would allow you to recover your documents and photos.

For win xp:

1. Log on as administrator.
2. Click "Start", point to "All Programs", point to "Accessories", point to "System Tools", and then click "System Restore". The System Restore application should start.
3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click "Undo my last restoration", and then click "Next". You might get a system message that lists the changes that are about to be made during the restoration click "OK"
4. On the Confirm Restoration Undo page, click "Next". The original Windows XP configuration will be restored. This might take a few minutes. After the system restore has completed, the computer will restart.
5. After the computer restarts, log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Undo Complete page appears. Click "OK".

For win vista & win 7:
1. Log on as administrator.
2. Click Start and type System Restore in the search box. From the list of results, click System Restore.
3. Click Undo my last restoration and click Next.
4. Review your choices and click Finish. Your computer will restart once the process is complete.

I have to move a few thousand files and folders from my desktop to external USB hard drives to free up space on the desktop drive.

I need to keep the original folder and file dates. When I copy or move folders, Windows changes the folder date, but does keep the file date (created, modified and last accessed now become the current date.)

Is there any "tweak" in Windows I can do in order to keep all the dates accurate?

I've even tried a couple backup programs to move/copy files, and the folder date is changed to the current date in all three categories as above.

I need something that will read this column and output it as yyyy.mm.dd into a separate filed so Excel will sort it properly in chronological sequence.

At present the "date" sort only sorts on the first 2 numerics, ie dd and sorts then from 1-31, irrespective of the balance of the date field.

Answer:Sort date daily

Hi,Here is a macro that should do what you want.Your source data is in a worksheet named "Source"Your report is created in a worksheet named "Report"If these are not the names used, either change the names of the worksheets or change them in these lines in the macro: 'change name of source worksheet here
strSrcWS = "Source"
'change name of report worksheet here
strRptWS = "Report"The source data is in these columns, starting at row 2 A B C D E
1 Name Room Status From Date
2 Wayne, Greg 440-2 Medicare AAA 1/23/10
3 Chin, Peter 520-3 Private BBB 2/23/10
4 King, Larry 422-4 Insurance CCC 1/23/10
5 Cohen, Alex 545-3 Medicare AAA 2/23/10
Due to the way that the macro finds the end of the source data, all cells in column A below the last data must be empty. On the report page the date will be entered in cell C1 as follows: A B C
1 Report for 1/23/10
2 Date Name StatusAdd the other headings, as shown. When the macro is run, this is the result: A B C
1 Report for 1/23/10
2 Date Name Status
3 1/23/10 Wayne, Greg Medicare
4 1/23/10 King, Larry Insurance
The macro is triggered by either changing the date in cell C1 on the report page, or to re-run for the same date, select C2, click in the formula bar and click the adjacent check mark.As changes made by Macros cannot be undone with the Undo button, test this macro on a copy of your data. One option is to create a Library with your preference. Don't know why, but Libraries are sorted folders first and then by date (if you select by date of course..)

Creating Library is simple... First make sure Libraries are shown (in file explorer in left tree right click on empty space and select New. Then you add folders.

Right click the folder, select properties, select the customize tab (or press Alt-V, "Customize this folder" from inside the folder) and make sure "All items" is selected from the first drop down.

I wish Vista would always just default to the All items view. It selects a bad default way too often.

hi,
when i download photos from my canon camera, they are all put in a folder that is named according to the DOWNLOAD DATE. i'd like the photos to go into folders that are named according to the SHOOTING DATES. this was the behavior of windows in the past and for some reason it changed.
can you tell me how to change this and to get the photos sorted according to the date they were taken?

can you also tell me how to number the photos continuously, instead of numbering from 1 on each new date? i'd like the photos from day one numbered 1 to 14, from day two 15 to 23, and so on.

Hi tamirhoresh

I use the following free application to organize my images as part of my workflow.

cam2pc - Image Viewer and fully featured Digital Imaging software to Download, Organize, Modify and Share your photos

It has a down loader that should work with your camera and will allow much finer control than any of the manufacturers offerings. It will even re-name your existing structure to what you decide to go with

It can actually create folders and image filenames from the files own internal MetaData.

There is a Paid version but have found that the freeware does everything I need.

It is compatible with MS photo programs but actually contains a good set of display options so may even replace them

3. Now in the cmd prompt, Type in “ fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 0 “ and Press Enter.

I am using a program that OCR's a page and then creates a folder for it inside an output folder...
Goes like this:
Input folder -> OCR program -> Output folder -> [Folder just for that document]

I keep the output folder open so that i can see the new folders being created for the OCR records, which i can then drag additional files to that records folder.
Since im dealing with thousands of folders im depending on vista to sort by date modified so that the newest one shows up on top.... But im running into a problem

I've done about 700 records now (700 folders have been created) and for some reason the date modified stopped working. Now the new folder is showing up at the end instead of the beginning. If i hit F5 to refresh the window it move to the top where it should be.... but im going through thousands of records and hitting F5 for every record consumes time and makes room for error.

Why did vista stop sorting by date modified? I didnt change anything, all of the sudden it just stopped being consistent. I can restart the computer and sometimes it will start working properly again for about 30 records, but its not guaranteee.

Please help me fix this, THANKS!

Whenever I open a folder and want to "sort by date (modified)", Windows 7 sorts by descending order. I have to click again to get ascending order (in XP this was not a problem). Is there a registry hack or some other way of getting Windows 7 to sort by (modified) date in ascending order when you click on "sort by date"? Various searches have only come up with bogus or obvious answers (e.g., click again to change order, "group by" (which doesn't maintain setting when reset to "sort by date"), etc.). This is why they are being sorted 01/01, 01/02 etc.The easiest solution would be to see if you can convert the field in the table to a date field. If this is not possibel then you could try either the format, or convert function in the query to convert the field to a date, then sort on that.If you need any help on the convert or format function please post back here.

I've used Outlook Express for many years, so I'm somewhat embarrassed to be asking this question now. I frequently have to locate all the message sent by someone, so click the "From" column header to group the messages by sender. Problem is, I'd also like the message for each sender by in descending date order. I can't find any way to do that; it seems OE will only sort on one column and the date column is random. Is there as way to sort message by more than one column?

Hi there, anyone know a solution to this problem?

I've got a folder on my hard drive that used to have files in it (I know, I put them there!). The windows explorer now shows no files but when I try to delete the folder it says "cannot delete, folder not empty" OWTTE.

I tried the MSDOS environment to look at the folder contents but it also seems to be empty and it wont let me delete the folder either.

I am operating windows XP II

I would either like to access or see the missing files or delete the folder.

Any ideas?

I am asking this one on behalf of a colleague because I can't fathom it!She has a folder called Rents, inside, amongst others, is afolder called Nominal Activity 2 and there is a missing folder called Letters. The letters from inside the letters folder are now in Nominal Activity 2 and the contents of Nominal Activity 2 have disappeared.I've known it for people to not realise they have dragged one folder into another one but nothing as wierd as this. I have checked all other folders in the Rents folder and can find nothing. Please help!

Answer:Missing Folder and Files

your colleague has looked in the recycle bin? If she has, and that didn't turn up anything, tell her to run a Windows search using a filename if she can remember one, or part of one.

I'm having a strange problem, and if anyone could help me I would be very greatful. I have several albums on my computer, I've saved the cover images for all them as folder.jpg. Lately I've noticed that many of them have disappeared, or aren't visible to me at least. Whenever I try to save a new file in the same folder as folder.jpg it gives me the option to overwrite as if the file is still there, but there isn't a folder.jpg file visible. I've tried going to 'folder options' and clicking on 'show hidden files and folders' but that hasn't helped. I've tried searching for a solution to this problem on google, but I haven't had any luck.

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 if that helps

Answer:Missing Folder.jpg Files

Well does this happen to the folders that dont have the Album Image on them anymore?

Hello to all!

I'm new to this forum and obviously i'm not sure if this is the right place for starting and posting this thread.

Since i'm pritty desperate i'm going to explain the best i can what is really happening and how it all started:

since a few days ago i was noticing that a few files, specifically mp3 files are missing from my music collection. I managed to recover the missing ones and transfer the whole collection to a new drive without issues. Today i've found that some recently downloaded files, including several mp3's where missing again from the new HDD. I started to look around the internet abut the problem and what could be the reasons that causes my files to "vanish" from my HDD. As i was reading, i stoped at one thread in other's site forums that related to some "security" and "user privileges" issues in Win 7. I then tried to "fix" the problem but noticed that the files where still missing.

Next thing i tried was looking for the missing files in some AppData subfolder named something like "virtual backup" or something. That was the last time i saw the "user" folder and the last time y accessed my local drive. Turned out the folder just dissapeared from the screen after a short "access denied" dialog box (error). After that, all of my desktop icons dissapeared and my c: drive went like it's empty and can't be accessed, still i can see the drive lying there and every time i run a virus ... Read more

Answer:Missing files, missing "user" folder, can't access local drive

Viruses do things like that. The scenario sounds familiar. Scan with Malwarebytes. The free version is good enough.

On my external hard drive, I have a ton of photos from different cameras that retain the weird file-naming scheme that the camera implements so the order is weird and out of whack. I've been wanting to organize these photos and thought the best way to do it would be to sort it by date; however, when I click the sort-by date tab, it takes FOREVER to sort it.

It's weird because this seems to only happen with certain folders and not others within the same drive so I'm pretty baffled as to why this happens and how to fix it.

I tried to do a search on the forum to see if anyone else encountered a similar problem by searching the word "sort" but I came up empty. Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Problems with Sort by Date in Windows Explorer

Well that was quick... of course I find the solution after I make a post.

I don't know if this solution is permanent but I hope it is. Basically, what I did was I optimized the folder for "General Files" after going to the folder's Properties and clicking the "Customize" tab.

It seems like it's always what would seem like the easiest things always turn out to be the the hardest to actually accomplish.

I'm running Netscape 7.1 and right now my email is sorting my various email folders in ascending order by date. I know that by clicking on the date header you can change that sorting to descending order. The problem is that I can't seem to get that change to "save". Everytime I open the email interface the sort order is back to ascending order. What do I need to do to make that change to descending order the default - and to make it stick.

The same feature exists in Vista and Win7. Just be sure to right-click on the headers at the top of ecah olumn to pick the headings you want (be sure to add Modified Date), drag the new header(s) you added to the right position you'd like them -then click on any of them to sort by that column header.

We have a list of ladies and the dates their babies are due. There's another column in the list with a date that they left our care - maybe moved away or transferred to another office. I'd like to sort the list by due date, unless they have left our care - and then have those ladies at the end of the list. So if the transfer date is blank, sort by due date, with all those transferred at the end.

Hello. If I select Date from the "Arranged By" field in Outlook 2007, it sorts by the date each message was received. I know that I can sort by the sent date by clicking on "Custom", then under Sort selecting Sent. This is a pain to go through all of this, however, since Outlook reverts back to the received date every time I sort by something else or search for an email, etc. I'd like to know if there is a way I can change Outlook so the default date sort is the sent date instead of the received date. I'm fine with editing the registry and what-not if need be.

I use the movie library function to view & play movies that are "ripped" and recorded from TV. I have now 300+ movies and add movies every week. I use My Movie Finder to get the rest of the metadata & folder.jpg i can't work out how date added works.

I went into an image folder, right clicked on a image, and selected copy. I then left the folder to paste the image in another spot. Well for some reason when I went back into the folder I copied the image from everything in it was gone.
I first checked the recycle bin but there wasn't anything there. I'm assuming it is due to the file being large sized. It was full of photoshop images my husband had worked on. That is the main reason I'm worried they are gone. We did have some files I backed up but haven't done it in a while.
I tried doing the Previous Versions tab but there wasn't nothing. I checked hidden files and nothing. I then tried a system restore and then undid it since it didn't help.
I'm out of ideas to try. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Hi,

I have two machines running Win7 64 bit.- one is lenovo laptop t540p, another is a Thinkcentre desktop.

Since about Sept.-Oct. this year both machines would hang up forever when running Windows Update (I always installed updates manually). So, I did some "research". I run a few "fixes" and downloaded some updates manually from MS website and after that Windows Update started to work again (or so I thought).

So, when I ran the Windows Update I would get the following message (on both computers): "Your system is up to date, no updates are available". After not getting any updates for about 3 weeks I suspected that something was not right and did more research: it looked like the updater was damaged/not working properly.
After searching the web I found this fix on MS website: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058

I followed he instructions for a manual reset of the components and was able to "fix" both machines- got updates yesterday on the desktop, today on the laptop.

However, while manually re-registering the .dll files, I found that many of them were missing from the System32 folder.

I just run the system scan (sfc scannow) command on the laptop and got the message: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violation".

Do I need to worry about the missing dll files?

Answer:Missing .dll files from sytem32 folder

Alright.

I ran an Avast! virus scan because my computer was slowing down (significantly). It found 91 infected files. All in the winsxs folder. I then deleted them. I really really really shouldn't have.

Now, Windows Update will not work (error codes 80073712, and 80070002). One of my games will not work, and several other applications will not work (usually with a "missing gdiplus.dll" type error).

I tried a system restore, but there was no option to restore to a point prior to the date I deleted the files. sfc /scannow in the cmd did not fix the problem. I tried restoring the individual folders in winsxs but they don't have an early enough version either.

I tried using a file undeleter to see if I could recover the missing .dll files. When I tried to run the program, I got a missing .dll file error. No they're not in the recycling bin. Basically they're absolutely nowhere on my computer.

Attached is a sampling of what I deleted.

After looking around I believe I should just use a Repair Install. I'm using the .iso from here because I have a factory install and don't have an installation disc. Is this the correct course of action? If not, what is?

Answer:winsxs folder missing files

And now I got a 80004005 "disc did not burn correctly" when trying to mount the .iso file. Also, I'm now out of blank CD's that are large enough.

Windows Explorer is sorting files on a network drive always by name. It doesn't save sorting by modification date. Where can I reset this behavior?

directly related.

Answer:Command to sort 20k photos into date modified albums?

I use ThumbsPlus to organize my photos. It has an auto rename feature, so you could sort by date and then rename by year/month or whatever, but it's notsuper automated - you would basically need to rename each months worth of files, which may or may not be a lot of work.

It's not super cheap if all you want to do is rename some files, but I think it has a free 30 day trial.

Last week I have handed my old laptop to my tech support colleague, asking him to allow me to keep my old HDD. He gave me my new laptop and after some copying of files, returned me my old HDD in a case. All well until here.
On my old laptop, I had a shortcut on the desktop pointing to a folder on the C drive ( the only drive of my laptop) . After my colleague removed the HDD and it turned into an external HDD, all files from that shortcut are gone. I can find the shortcut, but it is empty, as well as the original folder (of which I created the shortcut). My mistake was, that I worked with the shortcut in the same way I would work with a regular folder: arranged subfolders, saved data etc. and assumed, this will get transfered to the original folder. Therfor I did not think I would need to do something else to secure the data before the change if my laptops. Do I have any chance of recovering the files once available under my shortcut? This may belong in the OS thread instead, but because it's folder redirection I thought maybe networking instead, but anyway.

I have a desktop that was joined to the domain and had Folder Redirection enabled. The desktop was moved offsite (Satellite) where it continued to run; i presume in offline mode. There is no VPN or WAN tunnel back to the domain, it was completely stand-alone.

To simplify things I did an easy transfer wizard on the user account, and changed the PC to workgroup mode. There is no domain connectivity back to the DC/fileserver. Then I created a local user account and migrated the user data back via the easy transfer wizard.

The user's My Documents, Desktop Icons, and Pictures are missing. Is there any way of getting these back? What is the recommended procedure? Do I transport the PC to the domain controller/file server and re-join it to the domain, login as the user and get all of my files back?

Answer:Folder Redirection, files missing after disjoin

When you leave a domain, any domain user's local files on the computer essentially become locked up. Windows has security measures in place to prevent domain work ending up where it shouldn't. (Really any OS does).

Now, typically what happens is in a domain, user profiles are created for every user within the Users folder - at least those folders are created when said user logs on to the machine at least once. Within their folder names, My documents, Desktop Icons, etc. all exist in their own sub-folders. When you leave a domain, all Domain user folders are typically deleted (this is a security feature baked in). If the User folders are deleted, you're SOL. If they're somehow not, then re-joining the domain will grant access to anything previously there.

As an after-thought, I ran Hijack This. Here is my log, if that helps at all:

The offline files tab is missing from the folder options on XP on my desktop PC. (The other three tabs are present). This has not mattered in the past but I have now networked this to a laptop and want to share files and use syncronisation between the two machines. Any help would be much appreciated

Answer:Missing Offline Files tab in folder options

You need to ensure that Fast User Switching is disabled: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307853

Also, make sure you are enabling offline files on the computer that is accessing the network share, the one that does not have a copy of the files locally.

I had the same problem

I found that you can see the directory and files by going to
Windows Explorer > Tools > Options then the View tab in the drop box
Find the option for "Show Hidden File and Folders" and set the radio button
Also find the option for Hide Protected Operating System Files and uncheck that option

At this point the directory and files should show in
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

The temp file does not appear to work as it did in Win 2000.
There is only on large file list as opposed to numerous subdirectories
The list contains cookies and other componts previously kept separate
The list does not appear to include all downloaded page components such as .jpg .mp3 etc.

Any info on this would be helpful

Hello all,

I'm running a genuine copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I just completed a fresh install (with MS's help) and now I'm reinstalling all my files and programs. I have copied the "My Documents" folder from a backup drive to another drive. However, I noticed that in the source drive there are "214 items" but in the destination drive there are only "144 items". This is my second attempt at trying to move the files from one drive to another. The first time I copied the times, only 114 items copied over.

This doesn't make sense. Maybe because there are too many files or it's too large of data for the clipboard? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Missing files after copying folder to another drive

Copy the data in smaller chunks, if you try to copy something that`s already been copied it will let you know.

I have a music folder with 1,440 files and 38 folders and I like to keep the ones I've just added at the top. When I set the folder to sort by Date, it usually takes about a minute for the folder to show fully. The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10. Is there anything I can do to speed it up? I don't want to put them all on an SSD (12.5GB).

Edit: I fixed it by changing the shortcut I was using from D:\Users\x\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\Music.library-ms\ to D:\Users\x\Music\.

Answer:Sort by date takes long time for items to show

could you give me more info on your pc

A great way to do this is going to your start menu and at the search typing in dxdiag and hitting enter.

then clicking save all information (this will save it to a .txt file) and copying that information onto here

Thankyou :P

All of my drawings which I scanned into my XP Home edition with SP3 disappeared overnight. Also "My Pictures" was stripped almost completely of all photos and scans. I used an "undelete" program to try and find and retrieve them. Some were in the "recycle bin" but most were nowhere to be found. Some files were found in the wrong folders. Has anybody experienced this? Is there a known virus I can find, and delete? I ran a scan and none were found.

Answer:.JPEG files missing from Screen Saver folder.

Run at least 3 following free, online virus scans.http://www.pandasoftware.com/active...http://www.pandasoftware.com/produc...http://housecall.trendmicro.com/au/http://housecall.trendmicro.com/hou...http://housecall.antivirus.com/http://housecall.trendmicro.com/http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/m...http://www.pandasoftware.es/actives...http://www.pcpitstop.com/antivirus/...http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/lic...http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/...http://virusscan.jotti.org/

I am using Windows XP on a laptop... While using internet explorer 7 if i open a pop up window and then close the window it is crashing IE and asking if i want to send an error report. Also when I have multiple IE windows open and close one of them down it is also crashing IE. I have run both AVG anti virus and SuperAntispyware programs and nothing has shown up that it is infected. On the AVG anti virus i have recieved this error message on the scan...C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. I have followed that path way and discovered that there is nothing listed there. I have copied the host files from another computer and have placed them in the correct folder and have run AVG anti virus again and it is now running normal. i have downloaded highjack this and have run the scan and the results are below. I have ran both scans in safe mode and nothing has shown up

My folder (and subfolder) names are where they should but they are now linked to nothing. Empty. I copied contents of Onedrive Documents to a thumbdrive, hoping the missing files might appear in the new files. No such luck. I went back to clean out the empty folders from Documents and a msg popped up that the files are too big to recycle. Empty folders. I'm hoping my missing photos and videos of grandchildren are just hiding from me. Any clues?

Answer:Mystery of the mostly missing files: folder and subfolders exist but contain nothing

And check the size of the empty folders. Is it actually empty?

Today I discovered that my Windows\winsxs\backup folder is empty and I need to replace the files.

I did my semi-annual ?Create a System Image? onto an external drive, then decided to also create a System Repair Disc. While the repair disc was being created, the process failed most likely to one or more corrupt files.

It was at this point that I found my windows\winsxs\backup folder was empty.

I do have the original Windows 7 OEM install disc. Is there any way to easily extract, copy or whatever the missing files from the install disc back into the backup folder?

If my question has been answered elsewhere in the forum, please direct me accordingly.

Thanks in advance.

NOTE: this happens after my computer got infected by Win32.Virut ( over 200 virus was found and healed by AVG) then after this it seems AVG delete most of it.

NOTE: I also have WinXP CD, I can also access the net

Is there anyway i can repair or reinstall all windows folder important files

I keep getting a message over the last three days from Trend Micro Internet Security product that I have a Trojan that can't be fixed. Threat called Mal Hifrm aka Trojan. It tells me to go to my hidden Temp files which I do to remove the file. I have removed it once by luck.
I found it using search.
Deleted it and deleted from my recycle bin.
However I can never find it using Explore and the path. I have used Tools to check show all hidden files but can't find Temporary Internet Files folder. I don't think I deleted the folder.
In addition I run Webroot on it Webroot scans don't pick the Trojan up.
Now I am getting a message that the virus exists in two distinct Temp files from my Trend Micro product.
Any help from anyone here? Thanks M.

Under "Browsing history" subheading, click "Settings" button.
Click "View Files"
Normally, this will be in Users\{Your User Name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files
If you still can't open it, you might need to run Command as an Administrator, then browse to the path you (hopefully) found through Internet Options. You might have to take back ownership of the folder and its container, if the Trojan somehow managed to take over ownership, and check permissions. -Gerry
