Video Hardware problem with my SONY VAIO

Question: Video Hardware problem with my SONY VAIO

I have a Sony VAIO which I purchased 14 months ago. It has been running warm for a while now until last month it would not start up. When you switch on you get a page of letter a' s then a blue and black vertical striped page then nothing.

The Start up repair will not work.

It took a while but finally I got a response on the Problem Solutions from Microsoft suggesting that there was a problem in that there was a 'video hardware error'.

It has since said there is also a problem with the 6-4 adaptor.

I did try to download a driver update however it says that it can't recognise the software and will not complete.

I have run a registry scan and it found hundreds of problems with Reg Cure however it woill not let me actually make the purchase so that I can get unlimited fixes.

The model is VGN-S71 E

Preferred Solution: Video Hardware problem with my SONY VAIO

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Video Hardware problem with my SONY VAIO

reg cure wont help , its not a reg issue , either way reg cure still wont help its a waste of cash dont buy it mate trust me. 100% of the "issues" it found wont actually be issues at all , just redundent reg keys which are no problem and never will be.

it seems you have a hardware issue and your only resolution is an RMA (return to manufacturer) or a repair shop (is it still under warranty?) a repair shop will be expensive and most likely a waste of time.

Answer:Windows 7 Sony VAIO laptop hardware problem!!

you should have got a driver/utility disk with your machine, if not you can download all the drivers and utilities from sony vaio site, they have a tool that checks your machine and offers all the specific drivers you will need.if you have the disk, put it in and open device manager any part not working correctly will have a yellow asterix next to it, click on it, update drivers and aim the updater to your disk.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

My son's Sony VAIO laptop pucked it's guts, and I couldn't get it to boot up Vista and stay running. I've reinstalled Vista, but because the great guys at the now defunct Circuit City kept his restore disk - they told them that they absolutely needed to keep it. Well, guess what - it's in a landfill now.

I need to at least figure out what video driver and what wireless network drivers I need to install. It's a Sony VGN-FZ340E - but how does one ever figure out what is installed for hardware?

Thanks in advance.

Does it have a "wired" network port? If so connect that to your cable-DSLmodem/router/network switch and run Windows update. That should find missing drivers.

Anyone know how to fix this error. I get 1 long beep and 2 short beeps at start-up and no video but I get sound? Anyone know a cost effective way to fix this?

Answer:video card error. No video on start-up. Sony vaio all in one PC.

That beep code means that there is a video controller failure. It's unlikely that it's anything that can be fixed by anyone but a service technician.

Unless you have a removable graphics card in that rig.

What is the model number?

Question: Sony Vaio Video

This is an extremely specific question regarding my Sony Vaio that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on. I'm running Windows 98SE on the machine.

I have a digital camcorder and bought an S400 cable that I can attach directly from the camera to the laptop and can actually watch and download the camcorder videos on my laptop.

After using the connection with no problems a few times, the last time I tried to watch the camcorder videos on my laptop all I got was a green screen or just a still of the first video image (the video would continue to play on the camcorder, and I can still download entire video files as always with no problem).

The only program I can recall loading before having the problem is upgrading AOL 7.0 to AOL 8.0 - is anyone aware of any software conflicts that may be causing the problem?

Hi. I have an old Sony VAIO desktop which I just received from a friend. I formatted the HD (tons of virus activity) and reinstalled Windows XP SP2 from a CD I had; the CD that came with the system had been lost. I was able to update the sound drivers and get most other features working, but I am unable to use DirectX 9. The dxdiag utility says "The system is using the generic video driver. Please install video driver provided by the hardware manufacturer."

Here is my computer's model info:
Model = PCV-RX760(UC)
( )
Motherboard Name = Asus P4S266-VX
Motherboard Chipset = SiS650
Graphics Controller Type = SiS 315
Graphics Controller Status = Enabled

I tried downloading and installing the video driver on that page; it installs fine, but nothing happens after reboot. When I try and re-install it after reboot, it tells me (just like the first time) "This software driver has never been installed in your computer system. Would you like to continue the installation?"

I even downloaded the driver directly from and tried to install it. It comes as a setup .exe file; when I run it, it cancels out saying "The setup program cannot find suitable driver. The setup program will terminate."

It seems the original poster in had a similar problem, but I don't understand what he did to fix it... Read more

On boot, you see the vista loading bar, but in the background are vertical red lines. Before giving the "windows shut down due to" screen where you can pick "last known good configuration," you see a series of white dashed patterns across the screen, then "last known" and other options appear with the vertical stripes (not always red) in the background.

I attempted to start with "last known" and it just hangs on a black screen, with barely visible dark stripes in the background. Booting into safe mode is a little different. You see all the checks scroll across the screen, with stripes in the background, and when the desktop loads, you see the mouse, but white lines criss-cross throughout the screen.

I can't boot into windows to attempt to recover or install any video drivers. I'm not sure what to attempt next, since I've never worked on an all-in-one model. I would normally try switching out the monitor or the video card... but it doesn't seem like I can do that here.

Suggestions for the next step of troubleshooting? I'd think maybe recovery console, but the computer came with no discs - I was told that if we needed the restore and hardware discs, we'd have to call sony (I'm on the site now, and reading, but haven't found any troubleshooting tips that match the symptoms I've seen).

Is this a vista issue with drivers that got corrupted somehow? Or is this a hardware issue that I need to worry about?

I have a Sony VAIO I'm working on. Audibly, it appears to be booting up, the appropriate lights flash, etc. However, there is no display. The LCD doesn't even flicker. I hooked up an external monitor, in the event it was simply LCD failure. However, this also shows no display. The monitor does indicate that it knows there is a computer on the other end. It seems to think the computer is putting it in sleep mode and stays amber. There is a clicking noise from the laptop, the CPU fan is spinning and the hard disk also seems to be spinning. But the 'thinking' lights go out, only the battery charging light stays lit.

Thoughts? I haven't opened it up yet, so I don't know if the graphics are on a card or onboard.

Is it still under warranty, if it is I would advise you to get it replaced, because if you open it, it will void the warranty.

Hi all.
My Viao (VGN-FW480J) running Vista (64 Bit Home Premium w/SP2) boots with a pinkish screen, red thin line on right side of screen and distorted colors that are also grainy. The desktop looks so bad that it is hard to read anything on it. I have replaced the video driver (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650) without any improvement. The trouble started when I downloaded some win updates having to do with security essentials. I removed security essentials but no improvement. Now in addition to video trouble I cannot download any updates. Receive an update error 80070490. I have tried windows update support site to fix the error but all of their fix programs failed to work. I don't believe it is a hardware issue since some boxes that pop-up are very clear when on a white background. Viao diagnostics also reports all hardware is OK. I am also unable to do a system restore because Vista reports no restore points found. A complete scan with Malwarebytes reports no threats. Can anyone please help? Dan Chastain

Same problem when running from a Live CD/USB?
A Live CD/DVD or USB flash drive contains a complete bootable computer operating system (OS). When you boot a computer from it, the OS loads into, and then runs from memory instead of a hard drive. This allows you to run an OS without installing it or making any changes to a computer's current configuration.
To create one, download an ISO file containing the OS you want to use, (such as Ubuntu, Slax or Zorin), then use something like ISO Recorder to burn it to a CD/DVD or USB key.
Now boot your computer from this disc/key and your computer will be running that OS instead of the one on its hard drive.
When you're done, simply reboot your PC from the hard drive.
If the problem persists even when running a different OS, then the issue is probably hardware related.

Hi there,
I'm having problems inserting a radeon 9800 pro video card into the agp (apg?) slot of my computer.
I have a sony vaio vgc-rb42g xp mce sp2 home computer with the onboard Intel blah blah blah express chipset , which is the problem. I have to play Oblivion. I don't know much about video cards except that brown is agp and white is pci
Now, the vaio has the brown one, but a different configuration than the radeon, but that's not a problem yet because the video card just won't fit, the slots are about 2mm too far over and it doesn't line up. Am I just not finnessing it enough or is this another example of sony trying to drive me crazy?

Hi everyone,
I'm on a Sony Vaio Pro 13 running Windows 10 64bit.
Ever since upgrading to Windows 10 I've been experiencing strange horizontal distortion on the right half of the screen while viewing videos through any internet browser. The issue seems to be confined to YouTube ads (actual videos themselves are fine), news websites, and other websites whose video encoding is presumably similar. I've attached a fairly shoddy image I took with my phone to demonstrate the issue.
I have upgraded and tried reinstalling any driver that I thought was feasibly connected to video playback to no avail. There are admittedly some things I haven't tried (like rolling back to a previous Windows) out of sheer laziness, and the urge for a quick fix.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a Sony Vaio PCG FX401 running Windows XP but when I want to use the Video Out Option that my laptop provides, so I can see my desktop on my tv, it only shows the background not my desktop icons or any media what so ever.My laptop is not old and I have just restored my Win XP again to get rid of all the crap that those odd useless programs create when installing. So I presume my driver is working, but does it need upgrading, to enable me to see all my desktop with all the icons and media. Thanks Rob.

Answer:SONY VAIO PCG FX401 Video Out Problems !!!

It sounds to me like you have an option checked along the lines of "extend desktop onto TV".When I connected my previous laptop to my TV I could have the TV as an extension of my desktop. Try this:-- Connect your laptop to your TV in the way you have done.- Open an application (e.g., Internet Explorer)- Click on the "Restore" button (at the top right of the screen next to close) so the application isn't maximised.- Click and hold on the title bar of the application and drag it along to the right (or left/top/bottom) of the screen and see if it appears on your TV.If this is the case then your laptop is working fine and you just need to find a setting to make the TV the same as your laptop screen.hope this helpsregardsFitshase

Answer:Sony Vaio desktop - how to ouput video

Few options:i) Does your Bravia have a PC-in ? Many LCD tvs are effectively monitors also.ii) You might need a "TV Out" - some graphics cards (I thought most) these days have themiii) If your Vaio outputs DVI and your Bravia has HDMI input (I suspect it will have) then you should be able to use DVI to HDMI.Also worth asking on click here if you don't get a response here.

I have a computer I want to use for connecting to a projector for a church. The software I'm using for projection works best with two monitors (CRT and projector).

I was given this computer without any video adapters, so I tried to put in the ones that came from an older computer (which worked) running 98.

I can't get the driver for the second adapter installed properly - it keeps giving an error.

I then tried just to get something working by taking the old computer's hard drive (and booting 98) but that isn't working for other reasons, and I really would prefer to have it running XP.

I have a Sony Vaio VCG-LS20 series all-in-one desktop. 1.5 years ago, the computer started shutting down abruptly while watching movies online. At first, it would turn back on and be fine unless I started watching a video. At some point, it would only boot properly if I went through BIOS. At some point, the graphics got extremely distorted and eventually the computer stopped booting up. I took it to a repair guy, and he said it was the graphics card and it's integrated into the motherboard so can't be replaced. He was able to fix it, however, so that it was working fine for about 6 months, then the same thing started happening again. Now, I can't boot it up no matter what I try. I would really like to get this thing working again. It has Phoenix BIOS and the BIOS code that I heard (before it completely was unbootable) indicated that it is a video card issue. If I replace the motherboard, are the odds good that the prob will be fixed? Is it difficult to replace the motherboard in this model?

Thank you!

Reading on the specifications sheet for my laptop it says...
"ATI Radeon IGP 345M chipset integrated graphics with 3D performance and 128mb VRAM"

Now, integrated graphics are by no way good for playing games, but for some (such as The Sims 2 which demands a faster PC if you have integreated graphics) then I have a fast enough PC to cope OK with them - 2.93ghz.

However, when going into the graphics card/chipset properties it only says 64mb Ram. When contacting sony they give me useless info like "Yes, the memory is shared and can be increased to 128mb, as it states on your specifications sheet".

Ok, how would you do that? Can you increase the shared memory from 64mb to 128mb VRAM?

Please help

Answer:Video Card on Sony Vaio K315B - increase memory?

This will most likely be done in the BIOS setup of the laptop. Not sure what key is used to get in to the BIOS on a Sony but try F10, F2, F1, or DEL. You can also press ESC or TAB to clear the Sony logo for more information when the laptop is booting. Once in the BIOS finhd the settings for the integrated graphics and up the shared memory size to 128MB. You laptop manual should help with this a little bit.

Of course this will decrease the availiable system memory by an additional 64 MB.

I can't get into the sony viao's bios(pcv rx-360ds)to turn the onboard video off so I may use an upgraded card. I have tried the control alt del function at start up to no avail. When I gave installed the geforce 5200 64mb video card in the agp slot turned the viao on it says sony then gives me a black screen and will not continue to boot. Speaking to someone about this they stated the pc may be conflicted in trying to run both the onboard and agp slotted video card. Any suggestions on either getting into the bios to disable the onbard video card or suggestions on how to get this to work? I am currently running windows 98 if that helps, thanks.

Answer:cant get into sony vaio bios to disable onboard video card

The OS doesn't matter. Also, you don't open the bios with ctrl-alt-delete. Usually the bios can be accessed by pressing delete during POST. It should actually says "Press delete to open bios" somewheres on the screen.

If it has a picture it shows when it's powering up that is usually when you press the key. If delete doesn't work, try pressing tab. TAB usually will make the picture disapear and show you the POST informat, as well as tell you what key you need to press.

Just picked up a Sony vaio laptop which the previous owner has installed a version of Windows 7 on. Unfortunately the display adaptor driver doesn't seem to like directx 9, and crashes when certain things happen (such as trying to play a video). It comes up with the BSOD, saying "paging fault in non-paged area" or similar, and quotes file nv4_mini.sys.

I've attached an Everest report, if that's any use. Can anyone tell me if there is a way round this problem, a driver that will provide directx 9 support or a way to emulate it, or if I need to roll the windows version back to xp or vista. Hi all, I have just installed Windows 7 on to my Sony Vaio VGN-NR21Z but can't seem to find the correct drivers or be able to install them. Every time I check on Device Manager it just says " Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and not "NVidia 8400M GT" as it should.

Please can someone help me find the correct video graphics driver for my laptop and tell me what method to install it.
Thanks I really appreciate it.

Hi I have a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV26 with a LCD problem. When I start it the screen is on for about 2 seconds, with a red tint to it. Then it will turn off. The boot cycle continues. If I close it and then open it, it will again turn on but only for a second. When I plug in a second monitor it will show the desktop with no problems. I think the wires could be messed up because if the hinge. But before I open it up I wanted to get someone elses opinion.
PS I looked at prices for a replacement LCD and they were all over 400!!! Does anyine one know where I can get one cheaper?

Video driver and many old drivers.

1-remove and replace video driver
When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.
2-update drivers list
How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer o... Read more

Hi. My USB won't open. My laptop doesn't read it. I;ve tried to use it with another computer but its the same. I can't get my files. What should I do?

Answer:Sony Vaio USB problem

This is an entire area of specilization. You might want to do a gurgle search for help.
Rescue of USB flash drive files is not for the weak of heart.

There are so many causes. Failure could result from something as simple as pulling out a flash drive too early while it is still recording or downloading files, or it could be damage to the hardware around the USB plug.

Rescue is rare, so if the data is critical, get the help of an expert... Most repairs require the destruction of existing data on the flash drive. So do not do anything more until you do some research. Some brands, such as SanDisk and no-name units are particularly susceptible.
While other brands will rescue the data if you mail them the drive.

Some companies specialize in rescue of the data, but they usually remove the memory element, which means they destroy the drive in order to save the data.

HelloI?ve an issue trying to load up a home video from my Camcorder onto my Sony Vaio laptop.I?ve got the dv cable and have connected it all properly. Apparently, I was supposed to get a ?wizard? telling me that new hardware had been connected/add. I never got this wizard and when I go to upload my film onto the computer using DV gate, it says that the (Sony?s brand name for dv) is offline. It?s not but it?s as if the computer doesn?t know that the camcorder is connected. Is there anyway of making it go from Offline to Online and making the two things ?talk? to each other. If not, is there anything else I can do/get in order to upload my film on to my laptop for editing. All advice and help welcome and appreciated.Richard

Answer:DV problem with Sony Vaio

I was advised elsewhere:"If you open Device Manager (Start > Run type devmgmt.msc > OK) on the Sony what does it show against the DV port (Windows might call it Firewire or IEEE 1394)? Or is it even listed? If it is listed but the icon has a yellow ! over it then there is a problem, which would explain why the camera isn't recognised. If it isn't listed then it may be disabled in the BIOS."I've done as suggested and I have 2 controllers listed in a drop down menuThe first: OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller has the yellow ! as descibed above. The second: Sony CDX3222 OHCI i.LINK (IEEE 1394) PCI Host Controller doesn't have anything. What does this mean? Is there something wrong and can it be fixed? If not, can I get something to work around the problem?

I'm trying to install a toshiba MK4018GAP 40GB hard drive into this little machine. THe bios is updated and the bios always posts the HD as
65535MB or C/H/S 22272; 15; 63 (10776MB)
I enter C/H/S as; 16383; 16; 63 (8455MB)

ONE IMPORTANT FACT: I do not have the CDROM for this machine. I have the floppy though.
I've tried Partition magic8, BootBG, MBRtool, another words, I have about 45 disks piled infront of me and nothing seems to get this to boot into anything or save a proper MBR.

It partitions and runds absolutely fine (of course) n my desktop PC with an adaptor and then POOF!, nothing when it goes back into the notebook. I understand that WINxpSp2 hates the HD shuffle from machine to machine, but that is certianly not the issue here.

Toshiba took the drive back at the drive service center and sent it back cleared for take off saying there was nothing wrong.
I do notice when I use the windows MMC snap on for hard drive management that it puts the LBA equivelants in brackets as a note for me.) Still the note book refuses to see the drive or any partitions I've added.

Can anyone please boil this down for me? I'm nuts over it and about to send the HD for a swim in the ocean here in South Miami Beach. The time I've soent certianly outways just buying another drive. But it seems a senseless waste to do that. The original drive. IBM Travelstar 6.49 GB died on the previous owner.

Thanks folks,

It could be hanging due to a bad device that BIOS no longer recognized. You could unplug any unnecessary devices and leave only the harddrive, ram and video card and see if it still hangs.

Hello all,

I just acquired a Sony Vaio PCG-F520 saptop from a friend. It's nothing great at all (PIII 500, 64MB Ram) but it would be nice for using the internet on my couch. The reason he gave it to me was that the screen doesn't work. The neons come on but there is no picture. I've gotten a picture for a split second while moving the screen around, but haven't been able to do it again. The picture works when connected to an external monitor. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Question: Sony Vaio Problem

Hello! I would first like to say that I do not know if i am posting this in the right area =/ Anyway back to subject. I have recently discovered a new problem with my Sony Vaio F series. The Gaming Bundle of course, due to the blu-ray player and all. Anyway, the problem is, i never had this problem while not watching a video but when i am it makes these weird sounds and then crashes. After the crash it boots up again and informs me that it had a "unexpected" shutdown. If you click the more detail it says blue screen. But I never saw a blue screen all i see is a frozen frame of the youtube video. If i click search for solution the box just disappears and does nothing.

Answer:Sony Vaio Problem

You can right click on Computer and select Properties. On the page that comes up select Advanced system settings on the left side. Click on the Advanced tab and Settings button for Startup and Recovery. In the new box tick the Write an event to the system log and untick the box to Automaticaslly restart. Click OK and Apply and OK on the next box when the last one closes. When it happens again you will be able to see the bsod so you can write it down and also and event log.

Does anyone here have any idea how to take apart a Sony Vaio notebook (specifically a pcgfrv31)? I finally got a new keyboard, and it seems that you have to take apart the case to be able to replace it. Problem is, I've taken out every concievable screw on the chassis (including the two underneath the battery bay, the one underneath the ram chip, and the six beneath the hard drive caddy) - and the stupid thing still won't come apart.

Either that, or if anyone here wants to buy a used Sony Vaio PCGFRV31 2.4 Ghz laptop (no hdd - I have to keep that for myself since I already replaced the one that came from the factory; 2 PCMCIA slots, 3 USB ports, VGA port, LPT printer port, 56k modem, 1 Ethernet LAN port, CDRW/DVD Rom combo drive, optional floppy drive bay (I just found that yesterday!!!), Sony memory stick formatter, DVD recovery kit (purchased from Sony)). I'd throw in the keyboard (brand new from Sony - the one that's on there from factory has a dysfunctional number 4 key) and a second hood assembly (Sony sent me the wrong part, I never bothered to return it) and a copy of Windows XP Pro upgrade for a good price. It's got obvious scratches on the top and bottom of the case - mostly from my 1 year old son, some from me trying to get the silly thing apart. I've been running it for two years without a hitch other than the first hard drive quitting on me - that was an easy fix, just bought a new one and kept going. No problems on the install there... Answer:sony vaio notebook problem

I'm surprise you have to take it that far apart. Usually there are either only a few screws underneath marked with a K or just a couple of tabs at he screen edge of the keyboard.
I can't get into the only site I found on Google: Try searching for:

Hi, I'm new.. etc..

I'm the process of trying to fix a Sony Vaio PCG-FX105K, running Windows 2000.
Amongst other things, the battery doesnt seem to charge.. the diagnostic (which I assume is Sony's own) reports the battery is 0% charged, and will require 7 hours to charge..
Only other redeeming feature, is that the battery light flashes twice every couple of seconds..

Any pointers would be appriciated

Answer:Sony Vaio battery problem

Hi :0

7 1/2 hours for charging indicates that the system must think that the battery needs a full charge, which could indocate a number of things

the battery charging transformer that is connected to the power supply is maybe not working properly

the connection to the battery are disconnected or connected wrong (check that the ground wire and hot lead are correct

the battery is not good and connot be charged any more ( you can check this with another battery)

one thing you can do is use a multi-tester meter to check the input (charging leads) to the battery .. this way you can see if the voltage is getting to the battery

if yes, then replace battery

if no, replace the connection to the battery
that is all I can suggest with the information given

good luck

Answer:In Sony vaio HDD protection problem?

I've never come across this feature before but it seems that you ought to have it enabled.

From what I can gather, it detects sudden movements such as if the machine was dropped or impacted in some other way and it automatically parks the drive head to minimise the risk of damage to the disk.

If you're not being given the option to enable, you will likely find it in scheduled tasks.

I originally bought my Sony Vaio computer (Model#: VGN-NR285E) at Fry's with a 2 year warranty, and at the time I was told that the warranty would cover anything and everything short of throwing it on the floor and squirting it with a super soaker. I took it to Fry's a week ago and they told me any software failure, viruses, spyware/malware, and things relating to such and etc were not covered by the warranty. They then told me it would cost me 70$ to run a diagnostic on it, and if there was something wrong it would cost another 60$ to repair it. That's not including the amount of money it would cost to have them back up files that I may have wanted. When I was there; I explained to the tech that I did not receive a Windows Vista Start Up disc with my laptop when I purchased it back in late August of '08. He then proceeded to tell me that if that was the case; the computer should have it inside the hard drive. Now I just didn't understand what he meant by that, but he told me to take it home, press F10, and run system recovery. I'm now at home and my computer is asking me for a Vista Start Up Disc.

I'm not exactly a technician, but I'm pretty sure that when I can't even run my laptop in safe mode; there's something wrong. My computer has been restarting itself for no apparent reason, and now it refuses to even start windows. If I try to run Windows at all; whether it be safe mode or normally; it just restarts itself entirely ... Read more

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR21Z which I bought a couple of years ago. Three nights back I was browsing the net when the screen went funny (see attached pictures).

I'm out of warranty, but called the Vaio helpline the next day who suggested we try to reinstall the graphics drivers. That didn't solve the problem.

So their next suggestion was to wipe the C: Drive back to its factory state using Vaio Recovery Centre. This wasn't possible because some of the 'Next' and 'Start' buttons you would normally click on were off the display boundaries of the screen.

So, he then jumped to the conclusion that it must be the graphics card - presumably wiping the C: Drive was to check this (?)

Anyway... they quoted me for a repair as:

57.58 to collect my laptop, take it away and diagnose it
36.00 Labour costs if I did ultimately want them to carry out the repair
100-150 for a replacement Graphics Card

Seeing as I paid 600 for the laptop, brand new, 2 years ago this didn't exactly strike me as value.

Do they seem right in their diagnosis? Is there anything I should try? Are there cheaper options for getting it repaired?

Hey all,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CR354 (pink!) and since it blue screened on me a few months ago I've not been able to use the webcam at all (camera model is VGP-VCC6).

I have reinstalled all the drivers for the camera and it works when I test it (with Fwink) i.e. the little green light beside the camera itself comes on...but I don't get anything but a black screen. Have also tried with Skype and Messenger Live and get the same black screen. After reading about loads and loads of people who have the same problem it seems that I actually need the software for the camera, not the drivers.

So, this is my question; where on earth would I go about getting the software from? I didn't have a disc of software with my laptop when I bought it and prior to the blue screen 'incident' I had never backed up (I know, I know I've learned my lesson...the hard way!)

Would love any help you could give me because I've seriously spent weeks on this and it's doing me in!

Hi, I have a Sony vaio vpcee2e1e

It's a couple of years old, I turned it on the other day and it says upon loading "setup is preparing your computer for first use" it then doesn't ask me to log in it just goes straight to welcome. When it loads a black screen appears with an error message which reads "windows could not complete the installation to install windows to this computer please restart the installation" it then just restarts and does the exact same thing again.

Thanks for reading any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks again

ok here is my dilema.. so about 6 months ago my friends sony Vaio T7240 crashed and to fix it he accidentally deleted the recovery partition and installed clean an Illegal version of Vista 32bit premium. And as you all know after awhile microsoft finds out and pretty much pulls the plug not updates slower running the whole shbang, anyways he ended up giving me the laptop and for the time being i put a allready in use copy on just to see if i could find away around some problems. so as it sits its all sorts of messed up i have a legal copy of vista upgrade home basic that was used on another comp that isnt running anymore i wanted to know is it possible to use that upgrade on this laptop i now own if i put like win98 on it then upgraded or is taht copy of vista just trash now because the key is in use? or another option would be i have the Vista home premium OEMact preduct key if i got ahold of a premium install disk is it possible to format the HD and clean install with that key or is there another way to use it i am kinda broke atm so the cheapest way to make my comps OS legal would be best and if someone who can help me maybe has Skype or yahoo messenger so we could kinda chat that would be awesome i am fairly computer literate but this has me stumped and i need a real professionals thoughts.

I have a sony vaio pcg-k13 that I need to replace a keyboard on. I already have the keyboard, but i'm not sure how the keyboard hood removes. I can't find any screws on the bottom of the unit that I think would be for the hood...does it just pop off? Please help! I don't want to make things worse..

Answer:Sony Vaio PCG-K13 keyboard problem

I too have a Sony K series laptop and wish to get inside in order to get get all the dust out - I assume this is the reason for steadily increasing fan noise over the past year. I've undone all the screws with arrows, and the top plastics come loose however there appears to be soemthing holding it in place in the centre. I expect you have experienced this. I too cannot see any screws for the keyboard hood, and whilst it does feel loose, there are indentations on the keyboard side which
I suspect you are expected to use to prise it off. But is it a question of brute force? I do not want to be the one to find out and risk breaking anything! I have taken a few keys off the keyboard to try and find a screw; however it was in vein, there are no screws where it appears to be held in place.

Do you think unsticking the rubber pads at the four corners of the screen, which I strongly suspect will yeild screws to take the plastics of the screen apart, will help?

Please let me know if you have any progress in this matter.

Hey guys I bought a G.SKILL Value 2GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) from newegg to upgrade a Sony Vaio VGC RB40. The default ram specs that are installed in it is show in this picture When I went and installed the new RAM, and then turned on the computer I did not get any video out neither did it boot up at all. I put back in the old RAM to see if it was the slots that were bad or something else, and the computer worked fine.

At first I thought the RAM I bought is not compatible with the desktop motherboard. I did more research and it should work, also I went by this website to guide me in what kind of RAM I needed. I updated the BIOS on the computer and nothing happened. Two weeks ago I formatted the hard drive with a new windows XP, and everything is working perfectly.

I tried putting one RAM at a time in all four different slots and still did not boot up, just the fan and the light of the motherboard turned on. Then I try to leave one old RAM and new RAM in, it did boot up but the screen was scrambled. I guess this means that both RAMs are not compatible to work with each other.

Any ideas on what could be wrong? My last thought is that these new RAM are bad.

Thank you.

Answer:Problem Upgrading Ram for Sony Vaio

1. Maximum memory 2GB.
2. Each memory slot can hold DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.
3. Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

Did you buy a 2 GB stick or two 1GB sticks? It isn't clear from your first sentence.
A 2GB stick will not work. The three sentences above are directly from Crucial's site for VGC RB40 model. You need 2 1GB sticks and you can not use your old RAM with it because the maximum RAM you can install is 2GB total.

I currently have a problem with my Wi-Fi connection on my laptop. It will be working fine then suddenly wont find any connections! I then restart the laptop then it will work for a while then cut out again. Any help will be much appreciated, Thanks.

Answer:Sony Vaio Wi-Fi Connection problem

More info required please - What is the OS; have you Updated drivers or anything recently?
Possibly a simple visit to Device Manager would fix it.
First of all find the Wifi Network Adapter and uninstall it. Restart the laptop and let it reinstall the Adapter and see if this solves the issue.
If not then select the Adapter properties and update the Driver.
If still no good, visit the Sony Website and download the latest driver for your OS.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-FS660/W and have a problem with the CD/DVD unit. Recently the computer was full of viruses and I had to re-install the OS, it has Win XP Pro. I lost my system restore CD's, so I had to search for a copy of these CD's and got a copy from a friend. Since the re-installation, the problem began: It only reads original CD's. When I load a burnt CD or DVD, it shows a single windows media player file, with a size of 0 bytes, no matter what is the actual content of the CD or DVD. Before the re-installation it read everything fine. Now, for example I have a burnt CD with a copy of some drivers and can't open it because of this issue. What could be the reason of this problem? A mis-installed driver, or a patch for the OS to read burnt CD's?

Answer:Problem with Sony VAIO VGN-FS660/W

go to the Sony Vaio support website and see if there is a firmware update for your model

I have a sony vaio PCG-K415B which was running well, right up to the point i upgraded it from windows xp to vista. I have loaded all the drivers and it says the drive is working normally, however it does not read any disc inserted.

If i put a disk in the light on the drive flashes yellow briefly. If i open explorer and click on the DVD drive it opens the drawer and asks for a disk to be inserted. I know it worked before the upgrade as it loaded vista from a disc and now it won't read that same disc.

Any ideas ?

I brought a new Sony Vaio VPCEH and as I am never comfortable with company installed OS, the first thing I did was to format the system and install Win 7 Ultimate x64. After the installation, I am not able to use the Function keys, the ones thats used in combination with the Function key, like to increase or decrease brightness etc.. I haven't installed any Sony software's. Is it a must to install some of the sony software's to make them work and if yes, which software do I need to install?

Moreover, I downloaded every driver from the Sony website and installed them but my monitor still shows a Generic PnP monitor. Do I need any specific drivers for this and how can I change the color profile of my laptop as the colors are not accurate.

Please help.

Thank you.

Answer:Problem with Sony Vaio VPCEH

Next time you better not reformat the OS ... better just go to Uninstall whatever software you don't want in there... yes you need Sony software to work on the Key Control..

And The Monitor they mostly deteect as PNP is fine..

Maybe the battery is very  old had a sudden internal failure. It now draws too much power from the power brick. Can you run the laptop without the battery? Is there any sign of overheating. Be careful; in rare cases battery have become very hot and very dangerous.

Sorry, wasn't sure exactly what section this problem belonged in, so i'm posting here.

I'm using my sister's Sony Vaio laptop that i decided to downgrade from vista home premium to windows XP. The first thing i should have done should've been to get all the hardware information while on vista.... but i completely forgot. I backed up my general files but not the hardware information.

Now I'm stuck with a brand new installation of windows XP and no internet because XP isn't recognizing my NIC.

I've been googling around for some hours now with nothing.

I've gone to all the main "official" Vaio Sony sites. They all ask for model or product, but for some reason my model doesn't come up anywhere i check. There is also another option to type down your serial and product key which is a 15 digit number. Whereas the first 7 digits are the serial and the 8 other digits the product key. Still it doesn't seem to be a model of any sort... No site recognizes this Vaio model for some odd reason.

Model : PCG-5K1L.

I installed service pack 3, i thought it would at least be able to detect a network card, but to no avail it couldn't.

Everest home edition has no more luck detecting.

In hardware manager the only thing detected was the 1394 firewire port.

This laptop, from what my sister said, came with no manual or other useful information; meaning none.

I'm really stumped on what else I could do. I was thinking i... Read more

Sony may not entirely support Vista 64 Bit. Have you checked into that? It's highly possible that the quickkeys that you're referring to function through a program that doesn't work with Vista 64. Also look into bios flashes for upgraded 64 bit support for your model computer.

My sony vaio desktop has a faulty hard disk which cannot be read. Hi Guys,
I have a Sony Vaio laptop model VGN-FJ1Z/W with a 14.1inch widescreen bought from PC World in January this year. The problem is several fuzzy white lines running across the top of the screen. The first is about an inch down from the top and is quite a distinct line with a sort of fuzzy white running upwards about 1cm. The second line is approx 1cm below this and is again a distinct white line. I have only noticed this because the screen background has been white up until I changed it the other day. If I set the desktop to none and change the colour to black or red for example I can't see the lines for some reason. If I choose brown or grey as a background colour they show up quite a lot. Do you think the screen on this laptop is faulty? As I say it only becomes noticeable when the background is showing particular colours so I can live with it but I'm concerned that it may be a problem which needs sorting whilst the computer is under warranty. If I open a window minimised with the same colour of background, say grey, and click on this window and move it up towards the top of the screen the lines do not disappear behind it but show in front of it if that is any help.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-230E running on Windows Vista. I recently had to replace the battery with a non-Sony one. To remedy the problem of an annoying dialog box coming up to tell me that the battery was not compatible, I did the MSCONFIG fix I found on this board. However, I now have another problem: the battery meter reads plugged in, not charging at 52%. Is the battery really not charging or is this because of the utility program I shut off?
