Which should i pick? The lenovo Or the Asus ?

Question: Which should i pick? The lenovo Or the Asus ?

Hey! I've been debating on wether I should buy the Lenovo Y50-70 (59427681)
or the ASUS N551JM-CN095H .
I'm looking to buy today, so I'd appreciate quick replies
Main difference is that the Lenovo has Hybrid Memory with 8 GB SSD cache, but it only has 100 mb LAN network speed, compared to Asus' 1000 mb speed.

The price of the Lenovo : 903 USD
The price of the Asus : 967 USD

Here I will give you the link so you can compare these two against eachother. It's in norwegian, but it shouldn't be a problem

Preferred Solution: Which should i pick? The lenovo Or the Asus ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Which should i pick? The lenovo Or the Asus ?

This is my first time buying a tablet. I am not a tech friendly person. Hence I would like to seek a second opinion from you guys. It took me days to pick between android and windows and now I totally fried my brain thinking which tablet is better.
These are the option I came up with: Asus vivotab RT/ Smart, Lenovo Thinkpad tablet 2, Acer Iconia W5.
I am looking for a tablet that has :
- at least 64gb memory+mmc/port to add additional memory.
- micro/usb port
- can print documents. my printer is an ancient one (6 y.o), no wifi.
I am a student so I will be using this tablet mainly for Word/ PP/ Excel and internet. If you have suggestion for a tablet other than the one I listed above and in the same price range, feel free to share it.
At first I was considering an android tablet since it's cheaper. But i read comments saying that to print from android device I will have to download an app since polaris office does not have printing option. Is that true?

Answer:Help me pick a tablet. Asus/Lenovo/acer?

My personal choice would be the Lenovo.
Other than that I would buy the Dell Venue 11.

hello guys! i'm having some trouble figuring out which one of these lcds should i get: first model is an HP 2010i and the second one is ASUS VH222H-P (both from ).Now the second one is a little bit more expensive than the first one,but the first one is from Hp(which is a well known brand) unlike the other one of which few people heard about.Any ideas you guys? thanks!

Answer:which LCD monitor should i pick - HP or Asus

Asus are a well-known company, with a reputation for quality. If you think that few people have heard of them, I'd suggest you've only asked people that are definately not computer people.HP are a well-known company, with a tendancy to use cheap parts in their products.I'd go with the Asus product. Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Hey guys my brother wants to recover his laptop his default and i have little experience with asus laptops. Fortunately it seems to have a recovery partition in it, the bad news is i dont know which option to pick out of the 3
Recover Windows to first partition only.
This option deletes only the first partition and allows you to keep other partitions, and to create a new system partition as drive "C".
Recover Windows to entire HD.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk drive and creates a new system partition as drive "C".
Recover Windows to entire HD with two partitions.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard drive and creates two new partitions "C" (25%) and "D" (75%).

Which option will let me restore to default and keep recovery partition?

Answer:Asus recovery partition which option to pick?

What partitions does he currently have?

Are his personal files (video, mp3s, pictures, etc) currently on C? Regardless, they should be backed up.

A picture of Windows Disk Management would help.

I wouldn't bother with the third choice unless he likes that 25/75 proportion. If he wants to delete all partitions and create 2 new ones, he can certainly do that manually after the recovery in any proportion he wants, not just 25/75.

It appears the last 2 choices will wipe the drive clean, which may not be what he wants---depending on his current partition setup.

The description you provided isn't exactly clear which would go back to factory default. My guess would be choice 1 as it is the only choice that does NOT say "deletes all partitions", which, if taken literally, would include deletion of the recovery partition.

You might want to contact Asus support, but that may be an exercise in frustration.

I just upgraded to Cox Ultimate internet which is 60Mbps/6Mbps and Cox gave me a free router and cable modem. My modem is a Cisco DPC3010 and my router is a DIR-615. The router is a really cheap one and I am not happy with it's performance and I want to upgrade. I don't have any sophisticated networking requirements as I only have one PC which is wired to the router and I have a netbook that I use wirelessly. I also have a PS3 and Xbox 360 which I also keep wired to the router. I want a router that will give me the most from my fast 60Mbps connection and I don't know what is a good one to meet my requirements. So far I have been considering the Cisco E4200 v2, NetGear N900, N750, N600(WNDR3700), ASUS N56U, ASUS N66U and the D-Link DIR-825. What would you guys pick and why? Thanks for the help!

FYI: Sorry for putting this thread in this section but I thought it would get more responses and quicker responses (I plan on buying something today) than if I posted it in the Router Recommendations thread.

Answer:What To Pick: ASUS N66U, N56U, E4200 v2, N900, N700, DIR-825?

-The WNDR line is fantastic.
-E4200 sucks... Or at least several firmware versions have sucked. Not sure how they are now.
-I've heard good things about the ASUS models.

Hello majorkong, First off, in the future, please refrain from posting your serial number as that is considered personal information. If you go to this webpage: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/productConfiguration.page? Enter in your country where it was purchased and enter your serial number there, it should take you to your system configuration where you can obtain drivers for your computer. Hope that helps.

maybe an extremely basic question, I noticed that if I go to Lenovo Support and scan my P50 for needed updates, nothing comes up in things to be updated. but if I manually check in the same website, it seems there is a new video driver 10.18.13.5488, while device manager tells me I have the 10.18.13.5445. should I refresh manually or is lenovo auto-detect implicitly steering me away from a problematic update? I have the M2000M 4GB card. screenshot: meant to show Scan Complete shows nothing, but first item in the list is a video driver that I dont have installed.

How do you find customer service for either of these manufacturer's, plus the products in general?.
My main point is on views or opinions for the Lenovo G700 or the three Asus models X551M - K55A - X550CA.
I have done a few review checks, including battery power ratings (important), but I am seeking further advice on the particular models stated or manufacturer rating from any forum member who owns or have owned the above or similar products.

Answer:Do you have a Asus or Lenovo laptop?

Spuds: surely, your first port of call for support/service would be the retailer you bought them from? Unless it's companies who have a direct sales model, like Dell, they typically rely on their reseller channel. In general, thjough, I've seldom heard anything negative about either Lenovo or Asus as manufacturers.

Ok so I had no idea where to post this and I can only hope that I have posted it in the right area, more importantly I hope I can get an answer. So I like my Lenovo Z50 it is pretty capable, but the wireless card isnt very good... I get 1.5mbps on steam downloading games as opposed to the 5-6mbps I used to get on my desktop computer with the usb network card mentioned in the Subject.  I have installed all the updates for windows that they have, there are no more updates, I have even turned off driver signing authentication and I still keep getting that windows has encountered a problem installing my hardware. I have the appropriate drivers from the manufacturer (https://www.asus.com/uk/Networking/USBN53/) and even tried the mediatek RAlink workaround, but to no avail.  I really neeed to use the Asus wireless adapter, its so much faster. Please help.

Yep, another "which one?" thread, sorry guys... rolleyes

My wife needs a new laptop (she currently has an old Dell Inspiron 1501). She doesn't do games and it's mostly for browsing, music, making photobooks on Snapfish or MyPublisher, that sort of stuff. Mobility isn't a concern because it mostly stays at her desk or elsewhere around the house. My budget is around $500. It needs to be a 15.6" (or more) screen, Intel processor, and Win7; beyond that I've narrowed the brand down to an ASUS or a Lenovo Thinkpad but have hit a wall after doing some research.

Both brands/models seem to be the "best" these days in terms of reliability and all that, but then I inevitably come across one or two angry vocal posts about how "so-and-so brand is terrible!!" and such, and second-guess which is the "right" way to go. I'm particularly wary given that the Dell has not held up well at all in terms of reliability, and don't want to make a bad decision.

I know it's such a vague, general request, but can anyone share insight into one over the other? I'll happily provide more details on requirements and needs, if that'd help.

Thanks,
m19

Answer:General-use laptop: ASUS or Lenovo?

I couldn't find any reliability ratings for 2012.
I did find reader's choice
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2400793,00.asp
Asus earned 8.3 and Lenovo 8.0 but there is no indication of how many responded.
When you scroll down to Laptops - Home, you see both brands are even.

If you know the specific model, google it and read owners comments. This can be a real eye opener because some models are good while others have problems.

One way to get the needed info though is to read the buyer's feedback/view for each model in the store or read the member's postings for each model in forums.

I have decided on purchasing a convertible laptop and I'm currently choosing between these two (I should note that the online stores that I'm linking are in Romanian, however if you scroll down you can see the specs of each laptop clearly):
Lenovo Flex 2: www emag ro/ultrabook-lenovo-flex-2-cu-procesor-intelr-coretm-i5-4210u-1-70ghz-haswelltm-touch-screen-14-4gb-500gb-8gb-sshd-nvidia-geforce-840m-2gb-microsoft-windows-8-1-red-59425386/pd/DW3ZZBBBM/
Asus TP500LN-DN136H: www emag ro/laptop-convertibil-asus-transformer-book-flip-cu-procesor-intelr-coretm-i5-4210u-1-70ghz-haswelltm-fullhd-touchscreen-4gb-1tb-24gb-mssd-nvidia-gt840-2gb-microsoft-windows-8-1-black-tp500ln-dn136h/pd/DKF35BBBM/
The prices in dollars for the two are 775 dollars for the Lenovo and 900 dollars for the Asus. I should note that I am okay with sacrificing the Asus's SSD, the 500 extra GB of storage space, the 15.6 inch screen for a 14 inch one, as well as the possibility to go into full on tablet mode for the 125 dollar difference. However, I would like to know if, outside of these differences in specs, there would be any strong reasons which would make it worth it to shell the extra money for the Asus.
Thanks in advance!

Hi! I'm Rosvita from Slovenia and my english is not good, but I'm trying be best  Ok. I have big problem. My friend have computer with Lenovo motherboard from Lenovo M91p. They exchange Power Supply with Corsair TX650w, which have 2x 6 pin for PCIe. Now they buy graphic card Asus ATI Radeon HD 6870 and now I have problem. When I go in BIOS and I choose PCIe (or Auto) graphic card, computer always boot in integrated graphic card. Never boot in 6870 graphic card. This graphic card doing perfect when I try in my computer with Gigabyte motherboard. Any idea? What I must to do? Thank you very much for help! LpRosvita

Answer:Lenovo M91p and Asus ATI Radeon HD 6870 have big problem

I am running a HD 6670 with a Corsair HX650w power supply in my M91p, and all is working fine. I did have to add the front fan, ventilated PCI slot covers, and upgraded the rear fan to an Artic Cooling to ensure the card and system ran cool.I would check that the TX650 power supply is supplying power on the PCIe cables. If not, then the graphics card will not boot, and the system will not see that it is installed. Can you test the power supply and 6870 in another system. You could also try enabling multi-monitor support in the BIOS.  It is not exacting your situation, but is worth a try: http://support.lenovo.com/en_NL/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT062228 this is the mode I am using, since I have 3 monitors on the 6670, plus 1 on the internal i7 graphics.

We have been using a Radeon HD6570 graphics card (Asus EAH6570/D1/1GD3(LP)) in an M81 (5032-RT2 / i7-2600) Thinkcentre for some time without issue. The card has worked perfectly, but its deep heatsink obstructs the short PCI-e slot which is now needed for a 2 port USB3 card. As a result, we proposed to replace the HD6570 with a new Radeon R7-240 graphics card (Asus R7240-2GD3-L). However the computer will not boot with this card installed. There are no POST beeps, and no display from either the integrated or PCI-e graphics devices. The R7-240 card draws half the current of the HD6570 so it is unlikely that the problem relates to power supply capacity. The M81 bios has been upgraded to the most current version (9HKT58A), and all existing bios configuration settings cleared using both the reset jumper and also by removing and replacing the Lithium battery. Replacing with another identical card also fails to result in any improvement. As a result we must conclude that the M81 bios does not support this AMD/Radeon chipset. This is disappointing as the R7-240 is an otherwise ideal graphics card for the SFF Lenovo family being low profile, single slot and low power consumption, yet powerful enough for multi-display CAD & video requirements. Is our diagnosis likely to be correct? If so, is Lenovo likely to release a bios upgrade to support the R7 family of chipsets?

Answer:Lenovo M81 MT-M 5032-RT2 & Asus AMD/Radeon R7-240 Graphics Card

Check the dates of the drivers certified by Lenovo for your system, you'll see that the AMD drivers are many years old vs. Nvidia drivers, that could, probably, reflect into the BIOS support for graphics cards. I switched from AMD to a current gen Nvidia card (750 Ti) on my M91p (same gen processor as yours) for that reason.

Just thought I would mention that if you add the $100 online Staples Coupon to the already discounted prices for these three tablets, it will accept both discounts. That drops all three below $400, with very low prices on the Asus and Lenovo tablets. The coupon code is 24232 and the amount will be deducted on the final checkout screen before purchasing. Until then the coupon is not reflected in the price.

Since you have to hunt around different Lenovo sites (and other sites) to find out about these softwares, I decided to make a post to get feedback from actual Yoga owners on how these programs interact, what they do, which ones are prerequisite, and which ones are unnecessary. Please don't take this as a blanket answer. This is just what I have found. It might be right - it might be wrong. I'm looking for others to post their experiences as well. Lenovo System Interface Foundation Driver - Necessary prerequisite (missing driver in device manager without it). It allows the Lenovo Utility and Lenovo Companion to work. Lenovo Yoga Mode Control - Necessary if you want to use your yoga to seemlessly change between all the different modes (laptop, tablet, tent, stand). This software is responsible for autorotating and putting Windows into tablet mode. Lenovo Utility - Recommended(?) This one I'm not too sure on. I remember that I was missing some function that I wanted but I can't remember what it was now. Maybe battery cycle count and health? Lenovo Companion - I don't have this one installed and don't think it's necessary but would like someone else to shed some light here.

The only one available in the driver download page were Lenovo energy manger. The most importants for me that i need are lenovo onekey recovery app and lenovo updates. For onekey recovery I only need the app, not the files to restore the whole partition, because the recovery partition is intact, I did not format it. So I only need the app that opens it. Th apps I want to get back are:1. Lenovo Onekey Recovery app - The one I am more interested in.2. "Lenovo Updates' (lenovo updates is the name of the app) The scond one im am more interested in.3. Lenovo Settings4. Hey folks. I have been reading up a storm about Windows phone 8.1 over the last few days. I am considering changing since I am going to dump T-Mobile and go back to Verizon soon. Some background on me
I have been an IT guy for 25 years so love the techie stuff
Been using Android since the first Droid phone came out
Hate Apple :)
I have been looking at alot of threads, probably too many, and am looking for feedback on what I should be looking at and why it is good or not good. Things that are important to me
1. A good camera. My first grandson is 10 months old and I take tons of pics and videos that are auto-uploaded to dropbox.
2. Good performance. I am not a power app user, use things like facebook, yelp, web browsing, gmail and texting.
3. Quality phone. Have had the cheap plastic phones that feel like it and don't want that.
With this being said, Verizon has discontinued the Icon (just saw that thread earlier) so my choices are
Samsung ATIV SE (have done the least research on this)
Nokia Lumia 928
HTC One M8
HTC Windows Phone 8x (havent read anything about this)
Any help is appreciated and I will give additional info if needed.

Answer:Can anyone help me pick a WP?

The HTC M8 seems to tick boxes two and three. However the camera doesn't seem all that bad.

I realize that many SP2 components are available seperately, but are they all? There are enough aspects of SP2 that I do not want, that I will not install the whole works. On the other hand, there may be some new aspects that might interest me, aside from past fixes, etc. Are the new components broken down for download somewhere on Microsoft's site that I am not finding?

X2 3800+
Zalman CNPS9500
7800GT
DFI Lanparty Ultra-d
2GB Platinum OCZ Memory
Maxtor 200GB 16MB Cache HDD

Originally I was going to get:

Antec TPII-550
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817103931

But now I've decided I want something that would look better in my case, so to power those componenets which of these would work the best:

Antec NeoPower 480
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817103924

Antec NeoHE 500
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16817103940
(im reluctant to get this one because i've heard lots of bad things about them)

So, Im leaning towards the NeoPower 480, but if none of those are powerfull enough should I go witht the TP-550

Hi all

I'm trying to decide on a new laptop and have narrowed it down to these 3:

Samsung Series 7 Chronos - Pros: Design, Performance / Cons: No BR Drive, Price.
Dell XPS 15 - Pros: Spec, price / Cons: Not sure about Dell as a company??
Asus N55SF - Pros: Excellent spec for the money, great speakers / Cons: not the nicest looking, build quality is said to be a little lacking, not so portable.

All have similar quad core i7 CPUs and decent Graphics Cards, Dell and Asus also have Blu-Ray drives.

I'm a little out of the loop with laptops so just looking for opinions from people who have experience with these models to nudge me in the right direction. I can get all for around £900 or less so consider that my budget.

Main uses will be 2D/3D Graphics, Watching movies and some gaming.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Which of these would you pick?

Do you really need a laptop? Is a desktop an option? You will get much more for your money if you build a desktop for £900.

Question: W7U Pick Me up!

Been running W7U about a year now,, it performs well,, I like to tweak things and i have my system running quite well i think but it still seems to just lack that wow factor. I dont have my system overclocked nor do i have my Geforce overclocked but i know iwth my set up i could probably easily gain some performance but would i see a noticable difference?
I have read the how to overclock tutorials and i guess i have to admit im lazy i wanna just make some small adjustments in the bios to get me up a few more Mhz's so as not to create to much more heat and or instability issues. so my questions are:

#1 am i better off over clocking the processor? Ram? Or my graphics? or should i do a little bump to all 3?
#2 What tweaks have worked the best for you? where you actually noticed a performance gain during normal everyday use?

Mind you i'm not a gamer,,, i mainly surf, email, chat, webcam and do some graphics and website work.
Heres my main system specs

Answer:W7U Pick Me up!

Honestly, with what you stated your main uses are, you'd probably notice the most improvement by switching to an SSD drive (at least for the OS partition). I doubt CPU, RAM, or a graphics overclock are going to give you a huge boost, but switching from a mechanical drive to an SSD will show a huge improvement, especially in day-to-day tasks.

I just want a few opinions on which card i should pick:

This One For 75.99

or

This One For 69.99

Answer:Which One Should I Pick?

out of the two of those cards, i'd say the x1650 is better, but not by a huge amount. i personally prefer nvidia because i've never had a single graphics card from them fail, so i'd pay the extra $5 just for them. but honestly, if i were you, i'd cough up an extra $25 and get this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814122023

that is probably 3x as powerful as the two that you listed. obvoiusly your building your computer on a budget, and i understand that, but $25 for a hell of a lot more power is worth it, and its more "futureproof" because its DX10.

Question: Pick my New OS

well i am still on windows 2000

and i always hated xp, with its endless popups, and never getting to the point of being finished and stable, and done updating, the taskpane that always has useless choices.

but maybe its gotten better,

so pick my operating system, i am picky about space, colors, organization, i dont want my pictures or my music or my movies on my windows drive. i dont want to lose all files if i need to reinstall.

but i play games, and now ms makes their games only for xp, and any games that require aegia physx drivers wont run on win2k because the drivers are only for xp. i want to also enjoy nvidia's purevideo, gelato, and os native dvd playback, all requiring at least xp.

so my choices are winxp home, winxp pro, and i might like windows mce

i think i really want 1 OS, because i go from games to work to information really fast.

im not going to buy a new comp until vista comes out, 64-bit, ddr-2, maybe quad core.

right now i have a barton 3200, 2x512 ram, nvidia 7800gs.

my windows 2000 screenies: i will undoubtedly tweak whatever i get to something i like. i dont like bloatware, so all the tweaks are manual tweaks, i made all graphics other than the wallpaper and the icons, the layout, the sizes etc, all from obsessive organization.

Answer:Pick my New OS

Purevideo and "native DVD playback" work under Windows 2000.

Anyway. If you just want a temp OS until Vista, then I would say get XP Home, because it is cheapest.

LOL. You organize your Warez.

Question: which xp to pick ?

i just recently build a computer out of used parts now i cant diside which os to pick and what version ex home edition or pro or fullversion or sp 2

Answer:which xp to pick ?

Hi buenf !

Read this article :
Which Windows XP version should I buy?
(taken from the http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...ng-271086.html sticky at the top of the Windows XP section)

What are your complete system specs ? Check the link in my sig.

There are only 2 retail versions of XP directed toward the regular home user : XP Home and XP Pro. Xp Home is the cheapest one and is probably the one you'll want. XP Pro adds some features but unless you're a techie or need better control on several user accounts you probably won't use them much. Refer to the link above to know more.

The service packs are updates common to all 32bit versions of XP, current and final one is SP3 but if you can't find an XP SP3 install CD you can get an XP SP2 one and install SP3 via Windows update.

Here are the minimum system requirements for XP. I for myself would suggest at least a 1Ghz CPU, 40GB hard drive and 512MB of RAM to get a good experience.

If your computer is Vista capable you could go with Vista, in which case you'll probably want the Vista Home Premium edition (preferably with SP1). As of now XP still has the widest users and programs base but Vista has some added features and Microsoft will end support for XP in 2014 (note that by then Windows 7 should already be available). XP will work better than Vista if you have less than 2GB of RAM. Make sure your computer meets the recommended system requirements for Vista (double the CPU, HDD and RAM figures if you don't w... Question: Which one to pick?

Apparently, there are different versions from Newegg for the same product. The product in mind is "Norton Internet Security 2009". Why does Newegg have different pricing of the same software? I just don't get it. Maybe for more multi-license pack? Look at this:

Newegg.com - Windows, Symantec, Security / Utilities Software, Software, Software

The one I'm looking to get is the OEM builder's pack of Norton Internet Security 2009. It has the best price at $35 which is pretty good compared to most products out there and you're getting tons of protection!!!

I would stay away from Norton as much as possible unless you really want it. There are much better free alternatives out there

Computer 1 = 3.2g P4 w/HT, 2g Ram pc3200, 800 FSB, 512kb l2 cache, 120g HD SATA RAID Serial ATA. 478 chipset

OR

Computer 2 = 2.4g AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 2g Ram pc3200, 800 FSB AMD hammer,512kb l2 cache, 200g HD Ultra ATA running Windows 64-bit and sonar. 754(newcastle), chipset VIA V-link and the northbirdge is K8M800

I am going to buy an LCD monitor. I use AutoCad all day long and plays games all night. A big mixture of games but the FPS games are probably hardest on the monitor.
I know gamers don't like LCD monitors. I'm doing it anyway, I'm hoping the LCD will be less painful to my eyes.

I am looking at the Acer 1951B
Brightness: 400 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 700:1
Display Colours: 16.7 Million
Display Type: SXGA
Response Time6ms
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009051

The other choice is this new Viewsonic VX922
Brightness 270 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio 650:1
Response Time 2ms gray-to-gray (avg.); 2ms white-black-white (typ)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824116375

The contrast ratio and the brightness stats are slightly lower on the Viwsonic. I also noticed they don't list Display Color stats for the Viewsonic. This may meen it displays 16.2 million.

If you have 16.7 million colors that is an 8 bit panel right?

Has anyone seen these monitors up close, better yet have you played games on them?

The price is within 30.00 of eachother. I can't decide which to get.

Alright, here's what I do and what I want in an LCD monitor. Looking to see what you guys think.

I want to play games (CS:S mainly) on it. I have an X800XL and DVI input would be nice, as would a black or two-tone black monitor as to match my other components. I do just about everything on my computer and I just want something that will hold up, has a low response time, and has a clear, crisp image. Obviously all of those things are a plus

I've narrowed down a few choices, give your opinion if you like or recommend something else. I really don't want to spend over $350 at the most. I am poor and really don't even need to be buying one of these

Answer:Need to pick between these laptops

No model numbers so this is difficult. Both Toshiba and HP make good ones and less good ones... need the model number and description to known.
Acer is good when new, but does not hold up well...
Toshiba is a good computer, but they have been having a lot of trouble completing warranty repairs quickly, or finding parts... Their parts, unless something has changes, are now handled by a third party that is not Toshiba.
I would buy HP based upon what I see because the support is better and the quality is consistent...
But It depends on whether they are above the bottom third in the price range. The problem with less expensive HP laptops is that the screen fail early... and they do not have the cooling fans to move all the air that needs to be moved. If you can see them, that is a good thing... inspect very carefully while on to get an idea how many cooling fans or exits.
Heat ruins laptops. You need to be able to move a lot of air regularly. Thick laptops are best, but thin pretty ones sell.
When in doubt, I would buy the HP. If the Toshiba is a Techra or a top of the line Satellite, it could be good.
Acer builds a lot of laptops for others, and they are getting better everyday, only today announcing they are going to buy Gateway.
Look at screen resolution as reported, and how it looks to you.

I've tried at least a half dozen times over two days to upgrade w 7 pro to ten. Each time stopping at a different place. Only one descriptive message to uninstall Acronis. Following that advice and the install went all the way to 47 percent before going to bed. Woke up to seven this morning. Tried again and got a BSOD.

what can I do to help diagnose the problem. Also, is there some way to pick up where the install failed. At least it would be good to have the install exe somewhere. Each time I begin the "try again" it begins by downloading the installation file.

the most recent error was *-40017.

i need some help to stop this install loop. It isn't stopping at the same place, and almost completed once.

Answer:Can I at least pick up where I left off??

You can't restart from the middle of a failed upgrade as it rolls back but you can download the ISO from here Tech Bench and click on setup.exe (that will save having to download it repeatedly).

You can either mount the ISO or make a USB as described here USB Flash Drive - Create to Install Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums. In either case clicking on setup.exe while you are running Windows 7 will start the upgrade (don't boot from the USB - that will do a clean install).

The setup logs are called setuperr.log and setupact.log and stored in the C:\Windows\Panther directory (normally). If you can't find them there search the C:\ drive for the names. They should tell you what is going wrong - if it makes no sense then upload them.

Hey guys, first off, sorry if this is the wrong place or something like that. I'm new here, but I hope I'm here to stay.
So, I'm building my first PC (sad to say I'm no a budget, but I don't really feel like spending large amounts of money on something I have never done before, plus I'm a student). I intend to play video games and do some programming/video editing and rendering.
Okay, so I have a couple of questions that I would like to get answered.

What's a good CPU for this motherboard? ASRock 970DE3/U3S3
(I have my eye on this one Athlon II X3 460 (3.4Ghz/1.5MB/95W) Socket AM3, but I am oblivious when it comes to certain kinds of tech, so this one may suck for all I know).

Number of cores vs Ghz?
I've noticed that some cores have less gigahertz, but have more cores and vice versa. Why is that and what are the pros and cons of both types? (If that's not just an outdated thing.) I know it has something to do with multitasking, but that's about it.

That's about it, I'll update this thread if I come up with new questions.

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Help me pick a decent CPU

That motherboard is AM3+ compatible so works with AMD's latest Bulldozer line of processors. As such, my advice is to purchase at least a quad-core FX-4xxx series CPU. AMD also do six (FX-6xxx) and eight-core (FX-8xxx) CPU's as well.

Rather than approaching it from the viewpoint you have so far, you'd be best to set a budget and let us know exactly what you can spend, and we can use that with the information above to give you the best choice.

So my friend has an old PC and it doesn't really want to turn on.

It uses a AGP video card, and I have troubleshot it down to the Card, The motherboard AGP slot, or the Power Supply (since the card requires extra power) as the problem.

While the card is in - it won't turn on anymore. If I pull the card out and use onboard video - it boots just fine.

I think it needs a New Power Supply, but wanted some other options, but if a agreement is made that a new PSU would help/fix it then we can start there. It has a real old, I think 350w inside, so it may not be enough to actually power it all (although it did for a while, just not heavy gaming or anything)

Trying to spend as little as possible, but honestly this old rig needs replaced.

If possible I would love to get it upgraded to something a little more powerful, but with a very limited budget (say $200) I think it would be easier to go to Wal-Mart and pay $400 for one under warranty.

Answer:Old PC needing pick-me-up

can you post the make and model of the card and board?

I've never heard of a video card that needs extra power before. I usually buy / research standard video cards though.

I would try the card in another pc, if possible. if it works in another pc, then i would review my bios settings.

I prefer Toshiba myself. That model will have a very loud fan on it...just as a warning. But that's because of the processor. However, Toshiba's are great quality lappys.

i just don't get why you would get an amd 2.X Ghz processor over a 3.4 Ghz Intel processor. They are basically the same price. Is there something I am missing? Is it just one of those things that people have their own way about?

Answer:why would somebody pick amd over intel

AMD x2 = dual core; the 3.2ghz isnt. AMD has better architechture and resource processing so you get alot more performance over alot less speed. Also, xcluding the X2, price point of AMD is always alot lower then Pentium4s.

On the MG download page some software has pick with green next to em. Is that a MG recommendation to use? I see PC Tools antivirus free and PC Tools firewall free has the green pick. I haven't seen in the support forum many users use PC tools.

Answer:Software that has pick beside it.

I have PC Tools firewall on my Windows 7 netbook, seems to work fine, it's also on my shortlist when I'm trying to setup a lightweight layered protection on XP. There are times when the first choice of softwares just doesn't work well with the existing Windows installation - often due to users having run so-called 'tweaking' or Registry 'cleaning' programs.

Hi everybody, my good friends had an older computer, about 8 years old now. I tried to fix it but I believe the motherboard is dead. So not to beat a dead horse they want me to build them a new one. They don't need fancy. The only games they play are Bejeweled and some kind of casino game thing that they played on their old socket 478 board with integrated graphics. What I DO want is stable , something that will last as long as possible for people who get email and surf the net.
I want to buy from NCIX as we have one here in town and I am pretty sure I want to go AMD. Once I get the motherboard I will just check the site for compatible ram and cpu though I will probably come back here to check and make sure I made the correct selection for compatibility. So I have a 350 buget for building a new pc all i need is a cpu/motherboard and video card. I'm down to these 4 to pick from, but other ideas for builds are more than welcome. thank you.

Links to the boards:
Biostar AM3+ 990FX SATA 6Gbps USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard TA990FXE

GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard

ASUS Sabertooth 990FX - AM3+ - TUF Series - ATX AMD 990FX DDR3 1800 Motherboards

ASUS LGA 1155 - Z68 - PCIe 3.0 and UEFI BIOS Intel Z68 ATX DDR3 2200 LGA 1155 Motherboards P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3

Answer:Help me pick a new AM3+ motherboard please!

They are all good boards. We use Gigabyte boarfds in our compuer for resale, becasue we have found we have fewer failures and problems that come waling back into the shop.

But otherwise, I would probably go with the ASUS LGA 1155 for my own computer build

It would be helpful to know how you use a computer... how you connect... how much of your work has to do with images... games... high speed work, and whether it would be used by children or old folks.

I am in the market for a video card (PCI-E) i need to be able to buy it from dell.com... it has to be an ATI, it has to support SM 3.0 and i'd like for it to be under 250.00... im kind of new to the whole video card thing so please explain anything u can while making suggestions...

Answer:pick me out a videocard...

i can't imagine the advantage, if any, of buying from dell.com unless you need a specialized card (low-profile cars are sold elsewhere). i reccomend checking out tigerdirect.com and newegg.com

you're going to need to give us your system's detailed specs (include PSU ratings), your OS, and what you aspire to do with the new card (games, softwares you plan on running). without this information, i can't really tell you anything except to stick with good brands - gigabyte, asus, msi, ati, bfg (incomplete list, but more than enough variety there)

My apologies firstly for even suggesting this great site might be capable of having a virus somewhere and secondly I am only 75% positive that it was this site but I am 90% sure it came from REGISTRY BOOSTER that was advertised on TSG as a download under a big blue filled-in button! I have checked my History websites way back and can't find anything resembling this download and TSG is the only one I trust anyway!

OK, anyway, as a result from this download I picked up a cute little Trojan called "Win32Trojan Dropper.Delf.xotrojan". My Comodo Firewall, ESET NOD32 anti virus (real time) and Windows One Care missed it completely and it was only after I ran Trend House Call that it finally showed up!

When House Call cleaned the virus(s) out, they all came under "Registry Booster" and there seemed dozens of them!!

In the following seven days, someone hacked my PC and UPLOADED 1.2 Gigs per day!!! Hence I have blown all my 10 Gig monthly allowance over a few days!!

So without upsetting anybody's feelings on TSG, could this particular Trojan be the cause of the hijacking? I see it is listed as a HIGH to EXTREME danger of some of the review sites!

I have posted a hijack this log elsewhere on TSG and maybe this will show up something?

Many thanks - please don't sledge me!!

Answer:Did I pick up this Trojan from TSG??

From the bottom of the rules page ....

Advertisements do not imply our endorsement of that product or service

Your trojan could have come from anywhere there are thousands of them around, anyone who uses a computer is always liable to pick one up from somewhere ...it certainly couldnt have come from this site thats for sure ...its a known fact that some of these spyware cleaner programs install spyware of their own then charge you for getting rid of it....just use the ones you see recommended on this site in various places ....

Which would you pick? Or suggest another if you like.
I like higher resolutions if possible, 2GB RAM, 160+ hdd's and no preference on video card, just taking notes and browsing the web so nothing fancy.
I do like next-gen wireless cards and bluetooth though, kind of "future-proof" to me in that sense so I can take advantage of those technologies as they become more popular.

Answer:Which laptop should I pick?

Inspiron 1420 would be my choice. There is very little in the laptops you provided that would put one clearly ahead of the other.

Hi,
I'm looking to buy a notebook for my genealogy research use. It will not be my main computer and I wouldn't be doing anything that requires a high spec machine - mostly photos, data collection, internet, etc.. What I do want is a reasonably quick machine with good screen resolution. After spending several days reading every forum I could find. I concluded most don?t give enough info for the experts to really help them.
I collected these questions. I hope with this amount of info, one of you can help me!
Thanks
Harry

Questions I have asked myself!
1) Exactly why do I need a newer laptop/notebook! My 10 year old Sony VAIO is no longer useful. I?m told it can?t be upgraded! Plus the batteries are a 100 bucks! I need a unit that I can take with me to the Library or County Clerk?s office to scan wills, birth certificates, etc. I often take hundreds of headstone photos in a day. I fill several Media cards, then download them back at my truck, check the results and go out again. I often go to people?s home and scan in family photos, which I can later edit and repair.

2) What is my budget?
Around $800 although am prepared to stretch to $1,000.

3) What size notebook would I prefer?
I like things big and heavy! Heavy duty and well built is always better than dainty and cute! 15.5? or larger screen!

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
One that doesn?t run so hot. No Macs. More interested in their customer servic... Read more

Question: pick list

I have a template with various rows showing types of computer gear categories such as CPU, monitor, printer. I want to create in the next column over a cell that when you click on it shows the various types of compenent models under that category. This sounds like a pick list. When I rightclick on the cell I see the pick list option but can't figure out how to populate it. BTW this is in Excel 2002.

*************

never mind just found out how - use data validation list

Answer:pick list

Hi ijusth,

Pick from list is used to select from entries in cells in the same column you are already in.

I think what you are looking for is a Drop Down list from VALIDATION.

Use DATA / VALIDATION on a column and select LIST to refer to a separate area where you have 'listed' your valid entries (Row or column).
If the area is on another sheet, give it a Range Name and refer to that in the VAlidation.

I've finally decided to get a new computer. I want to game on it, so I was originally going to go with an Alienware, but they seem kind of overpriced to me. I thought it'd be cheaper if I built one myself, and I'd learn things too.

So, if I have a budget of about $2000, what's the best system I can make? I don't know anything about recent advances in hardware, so I don't know what processor or video card or RAM or what-have-you is the new standard of awesome.

Thanks a lot for any suggestions

Question: Motherboard pick

hep guys whats better of gaming and overclocking

http://www.amazon.co.uk/eVGA-P55-FT...27?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1287779226&sr=1-27

all comments are appriciated!!

Answer:Motherboard pick

Neither or both.

Most P55 boards are roughly equivalent in performance. The major distinctions are connectivity, board layout and pricing.

Why look at a Gigabyte P55-UD6 when its replacement (with USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb), the P55A-UD6 is cheaper?

Overclocking is more a product of knowing how to manipulate the boards BIOS settings successfully. It is also very much dependant upon the CPU you use. Some will overclock well, some others not so much. This is mostly down to luck of the draw- unless you know which production batches have a higher oc potential or use a lower core voltage.

I personally would recommend a board that recovers well from a failed oc attempt, has a reputation for stability, a good warranty and replacement service by the manufacturer, is well laid out and has the aforementioned USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb connectivity.
With those parameters in mind the P55A-UD6 is a reasonable candidate. The Phoenix Award BIOS offers enough tweaking options without the overkill (for most people) myriad of fine tuning details found in some other board's BIOS's (EVGA Classified/FTW, Asus Maximus etc.).
Other boards worth considering are the Asus P7P55D-E Pro, Gigabyte P55A-UD4P or Asus P7P55D/P7P55D-E Deluxe.

If this board is part of a new build, then you also may have the option of delaying your purchase for a couple of months, at which time the LGA1155 (Sandy Bridge) CPU/socket and P67 boards should make their appearance. A 50% overclock (from 3.4GHz stock ... Read more

and this:

Which would you pick?
The HP would be customized with the T8100, left at 2GB RAM, the 8400 GS, fingerprint reader, wireless N and bluetooth, the 320GB hard drive, and the lightscribe burner.

Answer:Which laptop would you pick?

I'd go with the Hp myself. It is a bit cheaper, and you'll be getting exactly what you want in it. Unless for some reason you need it fast (in which case, buy from newegg), then go with the HP. Hope I helped! Oh, but if you do get the Hp one, I'd possibly consider getting a warranty just incase. But thats just me.

Hi there guys,
I'm currently a L920 user on AT&T looking for some guidance on my next phone. I just started at Best Buy mobile and am now eligible for an AT&T concession line. I've been going back and forth on my next phone purchase, in the running are the M8 for Windows, the Lumia 1520, 830, and 1020. After seeing the rumor today about the 830's camera only being 10MP it has quickly moved to the bottom of my list(of course this could change Sep 4, if that rumor proves to be untrue). Camera is obviously something thats important to me, which is why list is currently ordered as such: L1520, L1020, L830, M8.
1520 makes the top of the list solely based on its hardware specs, the screen size is a little bit of a turn off to me. That being said I've never used a 5"+ device, but I feel like I would be more comfortable on a 5"-5.5" display. What I do like are the camera, MicroSD, case colors, glance, battery life, and styling. I would of course miss Qi after coming from a 920 though.
1020 is the obvious option for someone wanting a camera, but dated hardware and the 4.5" display are a major turn off. I'm not dissatisfied with the performance of 8.1 on the 920 or cyan on my 925, but I know it would be snappier on a Snap 800 and buying into old tech is never a good feeling when you're stuck with it for a year.
The 830 though... Man it was sounding like I finally found a replacement for my 920 when the specs starting leaking, then this news of a 10MP camera hits and boom.... I... Read more

Answer:Can someone help me pick my next phone?

I think you are looking for a high end WP phone and the 830 it's more like a mid-range phone so maybe you will get a little disappointed. At the end, all comes down either the L1520 or the M8... since there is no Icon/930 for AT&T and you want a good camera, that leaves only the 1520. If you can can live with the big size of the 1520, it's a solid phone by all means.

Hi Guys,

I`m that fedup with my computer right now, I`m ready to go nuts, its a 3066Mhz Pentium 4 socket 775, HTT, C1E, EM64T, Yet it doesn't even feel like a 2Ghz, and according to EVEREST, its on part with a 1.4Ghz System at best, and everything is pointing towards the motherboard and its chipset, aswell as a shameful memory controller...

So, I am going to upgrade, I need to correct this situation before I loose my temper with it, I`ve tweaked windows as much as I can, if I tweak anymore, I`m gonna look like I am using a Windows 3.11 machine the way it looks.

I have 512MB Memory, but I`m buying another identicle stick later on, I also have an AGP GeForce 6600GT 128MB, I cannot afford a new videocard, so I am going to sell this one becuase a new board requires a PCIe.

So, my question is, I will be buying from Scorpion Computers Can you checkout the Socket 775 model boards they have here and let me know which one would be best for me, I cannot afford a $350 board, but I am not going to go real cheap either, I just have to convince Kylie its worth the upgrade and its a good investment, but will allow my hardware to perform the way its meant to: Socket 755 Boards.

I`ve also got a SATA drive, 160GB Seagate Barracude, it doesn't feel fast either, heck this board has a SiS 661FX chipset, yet 6 of the 8 USB ports are USB 1.0, I don't understand that, its a 775, I thought USB 2.0 was the new standard a couple years ago.

The only IDE device I have is... Read more

So I got up Yesterday morning and my PC monitor was dead. The splash screen came up and that was it. Tried in on other PCs and same thing, splash screen and then nothing.

So I went out and grabbed a new one. I can't be without my PC. I ended up with a HP 25BW IPS LED.
Ive only had it for 24hrs but so far its pretty nice. Much better picture and quality than my old one and I haven't done any calibrations at all. Just good out of the box.
I did change the Color temp to Warm though, as I prefer it. But beyond that nothing.
Very clear and easy to read, and games so far look very good.
No ghosting that I can see just yet, and I was expecting some since it claims to have a 7ms response time.

So far pretty happy with it. Im sure there are better out there, but considering it can be had at under $300 its pretty impressive. And still a huge step up from a TN panel, at least to my eyes.
Anyone else have one of these?

Which version of XP do you liek better and why? I'm trying to figure out which one I should buy. Home looks better as it's cheaper, but I've heard that Pro is the way to go, as it's much less buggy.

Your thoughts?

they are both HP Laptops
im picking one and its going to be used for gaming... WoW and such games...

Laptop 1:
Ram: 6GB and upgradeable to 8GB
Processor: VISION technology from AMD with 2.9GHz AMD Phenom II dual-core mobile processor N640
Graphics card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 switchable graphics with 512MB DDR3 RAM, up to 3197MB total memory
Hard-drive: 640 GB

Laptop 2:
Ram: 4 GB
Processor: Intel i3 M350 @2.27GHz
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics
Hard-Drive: 500GB

My question is whats going to keep my Frames per sec high?
and whats going to not lag out as much?
which processor is better even if its just a little bit...

thank you

Answer:PICK Between 2 laptops please help!!!!!

What manufacturers are these? Give us links if possible.

Over 4GB RAM is overkill, won't help the performance in games.
The first one has better graphics.
AMD CPU, I'm not sure about.
Any of those will not lag out.

I have researched my little butt off and everybody says this is a good card.
This is why I had to buy a new card: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/1127096-huge-problem-all-sudden.html#post8918331
My budget was $250 and my specs are:

Motherboard - Gigabyte 970A-D3
CPU - AMD FX-6100 Six-Core
RAM - 8GB
Graphics Card - AMD Radeon HD 6870 (THIS IS WHAT I AM REPLACING)
PSU - NeoECO 620c

All the connecty bit's seem to fit my computer, and it's a bunch better than my old one....
I can't see any reason not to buy it.....but I am somebody who likes to be 100% sure before I buy something.

So...is this a good card for my system?

Answer:Is this a good pick for my new GPU?

Why did you start a new thread when you have two already going for video card related issues?

Here's the other: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/1127096-huge-problem-all-sudden.html
