Wireless LAN fails, all parts work fine.

Question: Wireless LAN fails, all parts work fine.

Small home wireless LAN, Netgear WGR614v4 router, Using WPA, two XP machines, one Vista (home Basic ),

Stage 1) all working ok for many hours, except when
2) Vista machine goes to sleep mode. On wakeup, no connection. Network SSID is visible, good signal, but repeated attempts to connect fail.
3) Other computers connect to router, and internet fine. They can also standby/poweroff and restart fine. Still connected.
4) Reboot Vista computer, no help. Network settings look normal, just no connection to wireless router. Incredibly irritating Vista diagnostic tool suggests I connect to a another network, or recycle the router. (If the router was close enough to be easily recycled, I would just plug in an ethernet cable. But it is not, and I am tired of unnecessary trips to the basement.)
5) Power cycle router, and everything fine again.

Does not happen with every sleep cycle. No clue what makes it fail sometimes and not others.

Any suggestions? This happens about every other day, so of course, it will not fail when I want it to, but if anyone has an idea, I will get ready for the next breakage.

Preferred Solution: Wireless LAN fails, all parts work fine.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just in case anyone else is having this problem, I found more information on the trigger--If Vista goes to sleep while Firefox is active, the connection is broken. The only way I have found to reconnect, is reboot the router.

If Firefox is closed first, before the Sleep mode, all is well. Restart Vista, the connection resumes fine. So, its a work-around, but I am even more confused as whats up. Firefox interfering with some Vista<->Netgear secret handshake?

I recently purchased a Linksys AE1000 Wireless USB adapter and attempted to install it in my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system with no luck. Message stated: Disable or turn off the other wireless connection manager, but I'm using only windows to manage wireless connections. The adapter does show in Network Connections but won't enable even though it says it does. I updated to the latest Linksys driver but still no luck. Windows Diagnostic came back with a response that the driver may not be working so I tried it in a old XP notebook and it worked. Then I tested it in the same Windows 7 system in XP mode and it worked just fine again. So, I finally tested it in another Windows 7 Pro 64-bit system and that worked fine. So, I don't know why it fails on my system??

I'm a software consultant and as such travel around to various client sites. At one site I'm working on now my computer now fails to connect to their wireless (it is one of those that says "Unsecured' but once you connect and launch a browser you are prompted for credentials.) I've been successfully connecting with this PC and this network for over a year, but for the past 2 weeks it fails everytime and when I try Troubleshooting it gives me the standard "Wireless Network Connection does not have a valid IP configuration" message.

My first thought when this began was that they had a hardware problem and that their router was failing to assign IP addresses. However, others sitting in the same cube area as me are able to connect to it successfully and I have not once succeeded in two weeks now. Also, I have no problems at all connecting to OTHER wireless networks (home, other clients, Starbucks, a wireless hotspot a co-worker set up here to unblock me the other day, etc.)

I have not found anything in searching online that helps me to determine how to troubleshoot this since it is only related to one single network.

Any ideas?

Friend bought an Acer laptop E5-575-54SM Intel i5-6200U; Windows 10 Home; 4GB RAM; 1TB; WiFi featuring MU-MIMO.

When I connected it to his WiFi network it was very slow. I ran a speedtest. It only gets 1 Mbps where it should be 20 Mbps.

I connected my iPhone to the network but got the same results. So, I assumed it was a problem with the WiFi. However, a different laptop (Toshiba) does get the 20 Mbps speed via WiFi.

Well, that is just not possible.
Since my iPhone was also slow, I know the problem is with the network.
But, since the old Toshiba laptop connects fine, the DSL modem and WiFi router are okay.

Two days later, the new Acer was running fine on the network, only to come to a crawl today.

I am stumped.

Have a brand new W500 and it's working quite well, but there seems to be a problem with establishing a wireless connection on startup.  It tries for a really long time - literally 4 or 5 minutes before telling me it could only get a partial connection.  I then start up Access Connections and tell it to connect and it connects with no difficulty.  Of course, in the meantime, lots of other applications have started up that wanted internet connections and have failed because of the initial connection issue.  It's also annoying to have a really fast startup, but then to have to sit and wait several minutes to start e-mail. I've got the most current drivers, Access Connections, windows updates, etc.  I'm running XP.  Obviously the network connection is fine because I can connect with no problem when Access Connections launches. I've tried stripping out all of the startup commands from startup and the HKLM and HKCU registry entries with the exception of Access Connections.  However, it still sits there and waits for 4 or 5 minutes before Access Connections comes up. Is there some sort of log I can look at to see what's failing with the initial connection and why?  Any other ideas what might be happening? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Answer:Wireless fails to fully connect on startup, but works fine when I launch Access Connections

Try to remove the Wireless Lan card and reboot your machine. Then check for the latest drivers. Just a thought.

Running an old HQ laptop with Windows XP. Has a Broadcom wifi adapter.

Yesterday all was fine, I could see 7-8 different wireless networks and connected just fine.
This morning, no networks to be seen. Nada.

Connects fine through LAN.
Other computer works fine on Wifi.
Uninstalled-reinstalled driver.
No conflicts in Devices.

Hi, I connect to a router which is connected to a cable modem. I can't get service but my brother can who has the wireless part. I did a ping test and got a reply. it said 4 sent 4 received 0% lost. I bought a new ethernet cable just in case it was that. And, in a fit of despondency, backed up all my files and did a system store back to factory settings since it is a dell to no avail. I tried repairing the connection and it said IP address couldn't be renewed and when I try to get on the net a little box says I have limited or no connectivity. Ipconfig says

Since I am having to run from one computer to another, (in separate rooms) nice detailed instructions for what to try that I can print would be great. I am so bummed and I am hoping someone can shine some light on this. I am extremely computer literate when it comes to office software and the like but not so good with terminology so simple instructions would be great. To my knowledge, since I did the restore, I have no firewall in use, but have macafee virus protection. need anymore infoI will be around all day.

My wireless at work is painful or non-existent at work -- but works fine elsewhere.

A connection is always made to the router, but it will just completely freeze -- or move at was seems like 32kb/s -- making attaching files in Gmail almost impossible.

I don't understand the inconsistency -- other people in the office do not have this problem, although some people have had it occasionally. I have no problems whatsoever at home -- so I presume it is some interaction with the router?

I may have the same problem, at times, elsewhere when connecting to public networks -- but that may just be speed in those cases.

I did do a driver cleaning, and may have removed the factory installed drivers -- I went to HP for their G-72 drivers, and downloaded them all -- since I wasn't sure which was the proper one for the wireless adapter -- and installed them all -- which at least made the bars of connectivity appear accurately, whereas before it would always show empty with an orange star even if connected well.

Any ideas? -- Here is my ipconfig /all

Linksys PCI G Wireless Adapter has stopped working after a semester at college. The network was wired there, so my desktop was plugged into it for 3 months, but the adapter itself was safe.
It worked before I left for college, and I just got back, set everything up again, and it is detected in device manager, I enabled, disabled, reinstalled drivers after removing the old ones, and tried installing and uninstalling it.

When at college, because this is a Vista machine, I had to update my drivers that manage my wired connection, because they were not working when I first got to college. I was wondering if this may be the cause of the problem.

Answer:Wireless fine, wired fine, back to wireless, not fine.

I work at a place where we can bring our personal laptops and connect to the internet using a wireless connection. We use WEP and security type is shared. We have a password we have to enter.

I have a Lenovo Idea Pad Y530 laptop. Have connected for years to this router. Well, I went to a website to download the free version of World OF Warcraft and during the download I lost connection and had to reboot. I think that is how it went. Now I am unable to connect to the internet at work but I can still connect to my personal wireless network at home on the same laptop.

I have reformatted and still unable to connect. I am able to connect to the router but then a red X appears between the router and the internet. Everyone else is still able to connect with their laptops and I brought my old dell in and can connect with no problems.

I had been using AVG free. I even uninstalled that and turned off my firewall.

When I click on the X I get this report:

There may be a problem with your Domain Name Server (DNS) config.
On both laptops I ran the command ipconfig/all

Dell laptop that is currently connected to work wireless shows that there is info under the Tunnel adapter Local area connection 6. On the Lenovo this are is blank showing nothing. I think if u do an ipconfig/all you will understand better what I am saying

Answer:Wired connections work but wireless fails

Have you actually "Connected" to the wireless network? In other words, have you run the wireless adapter's software, scanned for "Available Wireless Networks", found and highlighted the one that matches your router's SSID (network name) and selected the option to "Connect" to it? Once "connected", the little icon will get its "halo" to indicate it is connected to that network and it should then get its correct IP address by DHCP from the router.

well he has a Gigabyte GA-7VT600-P-RZ Motherboard and all he pretty much wanted was 1 gig of RAM, also he has 2 sicks that are 256 megs. so i guess he can put them all in. and he wanted a radeon 9550 256 meg graphics card.

I have searched for this problem and can't find it anywhere. Every few minutes my IBM Access Connections keeps shutting down, then restarting all by itself. I usually don't have to do anything to restart it, but once in a while it takes too long to restart, so I reconnect manually. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it didn't happen until I downloaded Google Chrome. I've installed Service Pack 3, but no change. And while I'm at it, my laptop will no longer restart when I click "restart". It just powers off. Hi All: I've been smashing my head against the wall with this one. I have uninstalled ALL unnecessary applications I could find. Basically all that is left is Windows XP, Drivers and Patches in Add/Remove Programs. I have removed the wireless driver, downloaded a newer one and installed it, still nothing. I have tried it using no Wireless Security on the AP, and also using WPA, and wouldn't work with either in Normal Mode, but worked with both in Safe Mode. I ran a virus and spyware check (before uninstalling Norton), and it came out clean. The weirest thing is, sometimes it does connect and get an IP in Normal Mode, but when I run a ping to my local gateway, half the packets are lost (timeout), and the ones that do reply I see a response time ranging from 2ms to 5000ms with no other traffic. I have no idea what can be causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If all else fails, I will resort to formatting it and installing WinXP from scratch, since I doubt it's hardware.

Hi All,

I have the above computer (or should I say my wife) & it has been nothing but a right pain since the first day we got it.
I have had it about 2 years & must have had to reformat the HD at least 6-8 times using the Product Recovery Disc as laptop wouldn't boot.
The laptop runs Vista.

Anyway problem I have now is that once again laptop fails to boot but for some reason Product Recovery disc also fails to work.....
What can I do...

I have read on various forums that it might work if I reformat the HD first using some s/w on a bootable CD but how/ what S/W do I use.....?
The laptop has a 160Gb SATA HD installed. How can I check this is all working.
I have no idea if current problem is S/W or hardware related..

Does Toshiba have a utility I can use...?

Many thanks for any help....

Answer:Satellite U300-13U fails to boot and Recovery disc fails to work too

What happened exactly?
Do you get some error messages using recover disk?

Please check if the HDD is OK! You can check this in BIOS.
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then the BIOS found the HDD and the HDD is not dead.

Usually you could boot the notebook using an Live disk? for example Bart PE
It?s a bootable live windows CD/DVD

This can helps to format the HDD and then to use the recovery disk!

Running Windows 8.1 and File History was working OK for my computer, actually on two different computers worked just fine. (I never could get File History to work with Windows 8). Then suddenly this feature just up an quit. Got a little "red" flag in the Action Center. Using the control panel an "setting" up File History my system says that file history is turned off. I never did turn it off, it seems it just up an turned itself off. But here is the thing, I select my external drive to use for file history and the system says the service can not be started because its disabled or no enabled devices are associated. It "sees" the drive but will not enabled this drive. I have used various windows programs, such as system "turn" on file history. But there seems not to be anything that will fix file history. Been reading here on the forum for help...but it seems all the help is non specific to file history not working. AN also very technical, for a non technical user, on how to fix file history. I have yet to see a simple fix to "make" Windows 8.1 to again run file history.
Why is this SO DIFFICULT to use? It almost takes a computer expert with knowledge on programing to fix weird things like this. I would just like to point and click to backup the computer...but windows is now becoming NON-USER friendly to manage these types of things. Very frustrating.

Answer:File History fails to work and fails to see external drive

Well it has been some time since I posted this issue. So I see NO responses STILL. AN I still have not been able to use File History EVER. It just does not work....period. Widows 8.1.1 install did not even come close of fixing "file History" working again. All I get is: file history and the system says the service can not be started because its disabled or no enabled devices are associated. There is NO user answer anywhere to fix this. I click enable file history. An the above answer pops up every time. File History is crap as far as I am concerned.

I have a friend who's computer works great on my network and my computer works great on his network, but when his computer is hooked to his network internet connectivity is slow and intermittantly fails.

Both computers are were connected directly to the router via the same ethernet cable, both units are laptops.

Again, vista believes it is connected to the internet, and it is, but the connection is just horrible. At my house it works beautifully.

His computer that is not connecting:
HP pavilion dv6748us.
procesor is AMD turion64x2
OS VISTA Home Premium 32bit
2 gb RAM

My laptop that worked on his connection is:
old SONY with windows XP pro
1gb RAM

Already have done the following:
Reset internet explorer 7
used the MSCONFIG console to turn off ALL startup processes just in case.
Ran a quick scan with superantispyware

I would have tried a differant browser but I could not download it, took it to my house so I could use a flash drive or let it sit forever and download and to my amazement there was no connectivity issues whatsoever.

For the last 4 months or so, my computer has been running perfectly except for one problem. When it is powered off, it doesn't boot again. Time and time again I reset the CMOS using the jumpers and most times it boots after maybe 15 tries. Lately, it hasn't been working and no matter what I can't get it to boot anymore. The following codes are displayed on the motherboard's LED screen

C1: Detect memory
C0: Early chipset initialization
03: Initial Superio_Early_Init switch

I have tried running with just one memory module and switching channels as well as re-inserting every single component of the computer. I have a feeling it has something to do with the BIOS and more to do with the second two errors. Everything seems to be fine besides the fans slowing down to boot and nothing shows up on the monitor.

Thanks in advance

Hi there
After "de-regionalising" and decrypting DVD's / Blu Ray's I convert these to MKV for my media servers. Handbrake on latest W10 build seems to miss some episodes when trying to encode DVD's with multiple episodes.

I've used Handbrake for many years - however somebody pointed me to MakeMKV which works for both Linux and Windows (and I believe I/os too if you have a Mac).

Works a treat - and is much simpler to use. Also decrypts the disc so no need to use a DVD decrypter first.

Here's the link --- rumoured to be going "Pay" soon so download while still free.

If you want to adjust size etc or convert to mp4 afterwards then Handbrake still works on the mkv files created.

Hi, I have a computer which recouldnises some USB sticks, but others (such as kingston) it asks to format them, if I try to format them it fails, yet if I put the Kingston into another W7 machine is loads fine and I can format it fine. Any clues as to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated!!

Answer:W7 USB asks to format but fails, works fine on other machines?

What do the error messages or warnings say fully when it fails to format or load?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and then see if the USB is recognised on that PC, if it is then suspect a startup application, maybe a security program and disable it to test.

The PC that doesnt recognise the drive is not on a corporate network is it?

Could also be a faulty USB driver for that drive, so with the USB drive out of the PC, open up Device Manager and then the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch then plug the drive it and look for a new drive (mass storage) driver to appear, when it does right click and uninstall it, then take the USB drive out, reboot and then plug the USB drive back in and this should re-install the driver for that device.

Then test again if it can be accessed and formatted.

Hi there...thanks in advance for anyone's help/suggestions.

Background: I have an HP laptop, running Windows XP and IE 7, and use a wireless router. I recently had issues with the Vundo virus. I followed the forums here in MajorGeeks and no longer have any issues (at least I don't think so since the _helper.dll files are no longer popping up, and the virus scans come out clean).

Problem: When I'm using this laptop, and open IE, the internet connection is strong and fast for about 5 or 10 minutes. After that, the connection is completely out, although the wireless router icon suggests the connection strength is "excellent."

My other laptop (running Vista) works just fine during all of this, with no connection disruptions (so I know it's not the router, or Comcast causing the problem).

What I've tried: I installed the new beta IE 8, thinking perhaps that might fix something. It did not. Tonight, I will reinstall the network card drivers to see if that helps.

I'd love anyone's thoughts on why the internet connection is going out on me. It is not until I restart the computer that I can browse the web (and ony for a short amount of time). Could it be that I still have virus issues?? If so, any suggestions?

Hi All, I've had problems with my notebook when watching videos in firefox or playing games as well as various other tasks.  My laptop would overheat and shutoff during these activities.  I ran a diagnostic on the processor and it passes all tests except for the final multi-core test.  On this test it hangs at 0% until it overheats and shuts off.  Are there any steps I might be able to take besides installing a new processor? It is frustrating because it works fine during most activities but fails when doing multi-threaded activites it seems.  I was even programming a threaded application and when I went to test it it over heated and shut off. Thanks,Chris

So for the past couple of days windows has done this. It happened after re installing my wifi card witch has been giving me problems. After reinstalling it and restarting windows fails to boot. It freezes when it says "starting windows" but when I manually shut the computer down and start it manually, it says: "windows failed to start" when I click start normally, everything works fine. Well except for the weird glitches and slowdowns. This still happens when and after installing windows, and in safe mode. It literally can't restart itself in the middle of the windows install! I can't believe it. Someone help me please!

Answer:Windows fails to restart itself but manual shut down works fine

I have done a search and realize there are several threads here that address this, but I haven't been able to solve this. This is the same laptop that I posted a thread about with the bad power button. Not sure if the two are related, since the two problems seemed to crop up around the same time. Anyway, I've tried HP's troubleshooting, but haven't gotten the speakers to work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, checked the volume (duh), and attempted to do a system restore. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that system restore had been apparently been disabled for some time, and there were no restore points to choose from. I've googled this of course, and besides the things I've tried, it seems that either the headphone jack switch is stuck or the speakers are dead. Would both speakers give out at the same time? I've tried jiggling/rapidly pulling a headphone plug in and out to dislodge the switch, no dice. Anymore ideas I can try? I've been using external speakers plugged into the headphone jack, but this gets annoying after awhile.

Here is info from both computers that might assist in troubleshooting my problem. Trying to Import from IE shows "couldn't import favorites."

In both of the following instances identical lists of my favorites and contents of Favorites Bar appear in both laptop and desktop files, just as they should, following their names on all computers.

These paths are from Laptop: Only the words "FAVORITES and Favorites Bar" appear from the Edge Hub, but no listings of them are available, and the bar shortcuts do not appear, however the complete lists appear following their names on the path shown below.

These paths are from Desktop: These work perfectly with Edge, just as they do when I use IE 11 and Favorites bar appears as they should.

My problem is as follows: when launching some .exe files, either by double-clicking in Explorer or by having another program launch them, they show up in the Processes tab in Task Manager, take up some memory, some threads and some handles, and then stay
at 0% CPU and nothing else happens. Launching the file again only adds a new process, equally "dead".
The weird thing is that some files work fine: Chrome, Steam client and at least one Steam game, regedit.exe, msconfig.exe, Adobe reader, VLC media player, one compiled AutoHotKey script...
The ones that conspicuously don't work are OpenOffice (all its .exes), many Steam games, installers for new programs (such as OOo),
other compiled AutoHotKey scripts, Pure Data.
None of these problems seem to appear in Safe Mode.
So lots of stuff still works, but I'd love to fix this and be able to work on text documents and spreadsheets again...
What I've tried so far:

updated Windows to all it asked forsfc /scannow returns no problem at all (just ran it again now)chkdsk /r /f, everything is finetried a system restore, which failed even in Safe Mode, with the message about antivirus software preventing it from doing its jobuninstalled AVG, which was only possible in Safe Mode, am now running the free trial of Malwarebytes, which says everything is fine after a scanfollowed the instructions to correct .exe file association in the registry found here:

Hey all,

My hard drive died on my main rig, which could access everything fine, just before I went on vacation for a week roughly. When I came back, I used my notebook on my network via a wired connection instead of my desktop, and I noticed that many times, links would give a Page Cannot Be Displayed error, but if I hit refresh they would come up fine. Even on the same page, some images would be missing, or on, one or two of the frames wouldn't show up, or when I clicked to login it would get stuck on the forwarding page and say it couldn't be displayed. Now that I got my new desktop setup up and running, preparing for SLI, I noticed it too was doing the same thing.

I have a set internal IP address, the router I use is set for everything properly, and I am using the same settings as far as I remember on the new setup as I was with the old desktop. The internal IP is set for what it is on the router along with the desktop's MAC address, and the gateway/DNS is set on the desktop to use the router ( Any ideas on what could be wrong?

Answer:Some pages load fine, others have parts missing/frames missing, etc.

I'd run CCleaner just to blow out temp internet files.

For DNS...I prefer entering the ISPs DNS servers, not using the router for the DNS server. Some routers do OK with that, others don't relay as well. So log into your routers web admin, hit the status tab..and jot down the 2x DNS servers you see on the WAN interface. Use those for your rigs DNS servers.

I'm running 32GB and tried unplugging the RAM and plugging it back in and then it passed several tests but just failed one tonight. As the machine runs fine at all times is this something I should worry about? Is it possible one of the RAM sticks could work intermittently and thus should be replaced for optimal performance at all times? Thanks.

Answer:P50S runs fine but sometimes fails the "Quick Random Pattern Memory Test" and sometimes passes

If you say "occasionally fails", the only word that matters is "fails.".  Is this the memory that came with the machine, or did you change/add it?  If original, call support.  If you changed, you need to replace it.

i hope this is all going to work but im not confident so help is very much needed and apprieciated.

Answer:will all these parts work together

It would help if you could post your budget and tell us what the main use of the PC will be.
You can make one saving by not including a sound card as on-board sound has come a long way and a separate sound card is really not necessary.
Need more details of the RAM before I could answer on its compatibility. So if you could post a link to the memory?
I appreciate that you are trying to keep costs down but, A: you do not need a 600W PSU and B: CIT PSU's are poor quality.
If you are a gamer then unfortunately the graphics card (GPU) is a waste of cash.

I have recently decided to go ahead and build my very first gaming pc (and pc in general) and have chosen most of the parts, but I'm not 100% sure that they will perform to my expectations, or work at all. I would like to use this PC for BF4 in ultra settings potentially. Just wondering if it could achieve this expectation in reality?
Here are the main parts (others have been acquired already) :
Motherboard: ASRock 980DE3/U3S3.
CPU: AMD FX6300 Black Edition 6 Core (3.5/4.1GHz, 8MB Level 3 Cache, 6MB Level 2 Cache, Socket AM3+, 95W.
RAM: Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 XMP.
Again, this doesn't show all the parts but should be sufficient. Would this PC run good games like BF4 in high/ ultra setting. If so would i need a mid or full tower case (i'm really new to this stuff and have a lot of questions)
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Yes this is a budget build...

Answer:Will these parts work?? Please help.

I notice you haven't received any replies, so I will respond the best I can.
I am not into gaming, but two forum members who use to answer these types of question is no longer posting. The only advice I can offer, is to check for compatibility the parts you have selected, with one of the main retailers. If things do not turn out right, then you might have some redress on the retailer.
The retailer or retailer's might even supply the items as a bundle or barebones with a discount?.
Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable might see that I have bump this up the list, and provide better advice and help.

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't. Is there something you're specifically concerned about? My only small question would be whether you plan to add a graphics card any time soon, in which case you might want to uprate the PSU.

Answer:Could somebody tell me if these parts work well together?

Should be fine. A few words of advise;
1 Get a WD black series drive rather than a green drive. The black series is better built with dual supports for the seek arm, dual processors, and a 5yr warranty.
2 The intel type heatsink fans can be difficult for a new builder to install. Do some reading and viewing online tutorials regarding their use/install.
3 The kingston ram I assume is a 2x2 kit and not a single 4gig chip. You would want the 2x2 so you can use the dual channel feature.

Answer:Solved: Can someone please tell me if all of these parts will work together? Thanks

I'd probably move up to a more modern chipset such as the current AMD 900 series, here's an example:

What is the brand of power supply?

What will you being the PC for? Any specific requirements it needs to meet?

Additionally, you can post links to the parts as that makes it much easier to look up.

I am building a computer with a budget of $1000 or less. These are the parts. Would you recommend changing anything? I'm unsure if the PSU wattage is correct and that the cables would be long enough to connect to everything inside the full tower case. I already have a keyboard, mouse, and a monitor.

Answer:Please check if these parts work out

Nothing jumps out as a problem, although I would recommend ditching that PSU and buying a good brand name one like Corsair, PC Power and Cooling, Seasonic for example. You pay a little more but they are far superior in quality and capability, the actual wattage should be plenty, infact you would be fine with a decent 600 or 650w.

Hey. Since my last computer is broken...and seems beyond repair. I'm in the market for a new computer. Of course as a student I'm low on money. Though I still want it to be worth it. So with the current prices I was thinking $1000-$1200 AUD.

I didn't come across any other posts. and I can only assume this is the right board.
I was wondering if anyone out there has done any tests or has any recommendations for parts and or brands that might be better to run Windows 7 with. Whether it be for future options or if that some brands are simply just not performing like they once did.

There is so much information out there its hard to keep up with current tech when you're so busy.

Answer:What new parts work best with Win7?

The best parts depends on what you want to do with your PC. Gamer? Video editor? Office type work only? Social website/Twitter interface?

Let's start with - Where do you want to go today?

Since I'll have the motherboard, I'll be able to power the system on.

What I want to do is just make sure everything's working properly (e.g. I just want to get a POST beep).

I do not have the CPU, vid card, or RAM. Are they required to test the motherboard and the parts hooked up to it to get the POST beep?

I'd like to just make sure the parts work before the 30-day RMA period expires for newegg.

Answer:Which parts of AVG 8 Free do not work

I very recently installed AVG 8 with no trouble.I think you'll find that the scanning of individual incoming files including email, is automatic. I've just checked this with an old backup CD which has a copy of Happy.exe "Threat Detected!" was the message with details of the suspect file.Although this program is well behaved and dosen't replicate or take over, it must have some viral like code and it stays under wraps!Default settings are for regular scans which on a well ordered PC are not necessary..... well if done manually when you can leave the thing for a while!I simply disabled regular scanning because I believe my system is clean and a pop-ups happen if there is any threat.

But the new case doesn't arrive until Friday. So is there any problem with putting the parts together on my desktop and running them outside the case?

Actually, it's a good idea to test them before installing them in the case. I would run them only briefly to avoid any possible overheating problems but other than that, no problem. This video will show you how to do so.

Hey, i got a new (2nd hand) motherboard that seems to have a few problems. I plugged my power supply into it that has been sitting unused for a month ever since my old motherboard stopped working. I smelled electrical burning about 10 seconds after i plugged in the power ( before i pressed the power button), so i threw it out and used a different power supply. Nothing seemed to be damaged, and the smell was coming from the power supply not the computer itself. The graphics card and processor work fine, as does the RAM.
The problem i have is, the keyboard doesnt work, and i can't type in the cmos setup password (even if i knew what it was... and yes, ive tryed multiple good keyboards), the inbuilt graphics doesn't work, and whenever i try to boot from hard drive or cd "BOOTMGR is missing"
Ive reset the cmos, and it still wants a password (enter is the only key that works, so i can't try to guess it)
Im thinking that maybe the BIOS was damaged by the old power supply. Does that seem to fit the description? What does anyone suggest i do to get this thing finally working- preferably not buying a new motherboard because ive just broken 3 before i realised it was the power supply killing them all...I really dont want to spend any more money

Answer:MoBo issues, some parts work, some don't

Perfectly sure you have a busted mainboard there... You don't really have a bios damage from a power supply, only board damage. Also, did you try to see if the hard drives work on any other computers?

I'm afraid you might have to get a new board because your old PSU fried git but thats my opinion.

I recently did a mcafee virus scan and it came up with one problem that couldn't be resolved, but would be scanned on reboot. I did that and since then I have had issues.

My machine (dell laptop running vista) took ages to boot up, so much so that I ended up just powering it down.

I now have no wireless connection, no device manager, etc. They all say that the service is not installed. So I am struggling to access anywhere to sort problems out.

The wireless network says it is not installed, but it says it is connected with limited access. ie no internet connection. So I can't download any help.
Device manager doesn't work so I can't get to the wireless adapter to turn it on, install or whatever.
System restore wont work from windows, only from safe mode or boot from recovery disc. But I have run that and it can't restore. I have run disc error check and that did sort some errors but still hasn't solved the problem.

I am about to buy an external hard drive to back up data, photos etc. as I can access them. It just seems as if some of the windows software is missing or corrupted.

I do have some programs on the laptop that I want to save and use again (as I don't have the discs). If I backup the whole system can I restore just some of the programs, if not is there an easy way to copy the programs I want to save (that I haven't got the disc for) to the external hard drive and be able to get it back on the laptop later. Probably this is something simple in IE7 options/settings but I failed to figure it out.

This is happening on my desktop (am writing this on my laptop). It's failing to connect, with the exception being "secure" sites - https://....

Email is working fine.

PS this happened after we did Microsoft livecare free scan and implemented corrective actions (malware/virus deletions); it then prompted us to reboot, then indicated new Windows updates to install, and then it prompted us to re-install IE7

Answer:Solved: IE7 fails to connect to sites with http, works in https; email works fine

I have a very frustrating problem. I'm trying to do a clean install of XP on a machine as Windows has got corrupted and won't start up. I got the machine with XP pre-installed about four years ago so I've never come across the problem I'm about to describe before.

Basically despite being able to use the keyboard to enter boot menus and make changes etc. during initial boot-up when I get to the point where it says windows hasn't started properly, do you want to start normally or start in safe mode etc. my keyboard suddenly does not work at all so I can't make any selections other than waiting for the full thirty seconds with the default start normally option selected. Of course Windows then won't boot up completely.

Similarly if I use a start up diskette or 'ultimate' boot CD or with a view to reformatting when I get the A: prompt or told to hit enter to run my boot CD I can't do anything with the keyboard, and therefore can't reformat.

I can't see any options in the boot menus to do anything about this keyboard problem. Anyone any ideas what on earth is going on and how I can solve it? Because otherwise I can't see how on earth I can reformat the machine.

Answer:Solved: keyboard doesn't work during later parts of boot-up and set-up

I then did find a setting in the BIOS talking about USB emulating legacy devices which was disabled. I enabled that and it worked, presumably emulating a PS2 keyboard which I understand works fine throughout all of the boot process.

random parts of my touch screen aren't working including my navigation bar. i tried a soft and hard reset to no avail. this happened seemingly out of the blue. i also can't access the touch option in the settings.

Answer:Why don't certain parts of my touch screen work on my Nokia Lumia 530?

I'd take it in for service -- hopefully a warranty replacement or repair.

Over the last two days, I've noticed that my laptop has been losing it's wi-fi connection. When I open the network connector, none of the local networks, including my own, appear in the list. I've checked that the network adapter is switched on (I've even switched it off for a few seconds and switched it back on), and I've refreshed the list multiple times to no avail. When I restart the computer, my wi-fi connection is restored, but after a few hours it drops again and I have to restart the computer to reconnect. I'd also note that it's most likely not a router or modem problem, as nothing else is losing wi-fi connection (xbox, cell phone, etc.)

Thinking it may have been the result of a virus, I've run a Malwarebytes Scan in Safe Mode. The Scan log is included at the bottom of this post. I thought this may have fixed the problem, but a few hours after restarting the computer, it happened again.

My computer is a TOSHIBA Satellite A305, running Windows Vista Home Premium. If there are any more specific details that you need, please let me know. I greatly appreciate any help I can get with this. As of right now, it's just a minor inconvenience, but I don't want it to end up being something that would shut me down completely.

Love my X40!!!  Was doing fine... Then it stopped connecting to my wireless router. Other laptop, a R51e, connects no problem.I'm able to turn it on and see available wireless routers in the ThinkVantage Access Connections display.I select my secure router and it attempts to connect, I get a progress bar in a pop-up window, but quickly stops at "Applying wireless settings". Same thing for another nearby open wireless router.Current Driver: Intel Pro/wireless LAN 210 3B Mini PCI Adapter - Intel - 7/13/2006 - Ver. comments or suggestions greatly appreciated! Bruce

Answer:X40 Wireless Connection Fails @ "Applying Wireless Settings"

Hi bcmurray, You could try un-installing Access Connections and just using the Windows wireless tools to scan for wireless networks and connect to yours. Unless you're connecting to multiple *wired* networks, Access Connections just adds unnecessary complexity.

I've been trying to fix this problem for a week and hoping someone here can give me some tips. My problem is this..I've downloaded a couple movies to my PC and they play just fine with my VLC Media Player (subtitles and all); however, when I copy the movie to my stic and play it on my HDTV, some of these same movies play the subtitles just fine with no problem but other's won't play the subtitles at all. This gets very frustrating especially when it's another language and a very important part of the movie. The format for the movies is the same (mp4) and the format for the subtitles is the same (.srt). I even tried copying the .srt file to the stic even though those that play ok on the tv don't have them on the stic but are somehow embedded in the mp4 file. This is getting very frustrating because I've tried so many different things to get this to work and have had no luck. ANY suggestions are appreciated!

Answer:Some Subtitles Work Fine On TV But Others Won't

You've answered your own question. Some of the movies have the subtitles hard-coded (embedded), while others don't.You can get software to hard-code the subtitles, if that's what you want.Try Google. Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.

Tried to download some new app's and unfort have failed ("requires attention").
I have few app's on my phone. Some work some dont. Seem to half download then fail.
Not overly tech savvy unfort. The phone apparently has current updates so im confused. Any thoughts? Cheers

Answer:Why won't some app's work or download although others are fine?

did you tap on the "require's attention" message instead of just retrying? if your phone has an SD card, some apps require installation on internal memory. tapping on the message will ask if it's ok to do that.

Installing using the DVD went normally. It took a while after I got to the Desktop for the Start Button to become functional.

I was a little disappointed to see they are still using the Microsoft standard size Recovery and EFI system partitions, 300 MB and 100 MB respectively. I was hoping they would change that to 450 MB and 260 MB respectively.

I will be checking the USB install a little later.

Older computer, XP Home, SP3, wireless G connection in a small home, FIOS. I was running IE7 (just updated to IE8, IE7 stopped working earlier this month, thought the update might help, didn't) and Mozilla 3.011 (works fine, I just like to run two different browsers).

Here is the diagnostic message I get from the internal XP network diagnostics wizard:

hey guys
so i finally decided to install win7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)

the annoying this that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.

my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.

does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway

this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense :-/

Answer:installs fine, runs fine, reboots..not fine

Did you delete/recreate the partition? If you haven't then do this first and try re-installing Win 7. I wouldn't recommend removing the watermark as that can have unpredictable results.

This is my kids' computer, we've had it almost one year. It used to work without any problems until about 3 months ago. Every minute or so, Lego Star Wars game freezes, will then unfreeze and work fine for another minute or so, somethimes it crashes completely. Usually after starting game, the screen will blank and the game minimizes itself, you can then maximize and it works fine. I've tried everything I can think of: uninstalled game, reinstalled game, virus scans, spyware scans, driver updates, defrag, disk clean, increased paging file size... If I'm using Radeon 9250 PCI, shouldn't the Intel 828656 Graphics Controller be disabled? Maybe one of the recent automatic updates changed the driver settings. Any advice?

496 MB
Intel 828656 Graphics Controller

I've spent 2 days on this and am reaching out for help because I'm at a loss.
As the title says, it's only internet internet that's not working.  Other computers on the network are not affected & no proxys in use. IP4 only, same issue on different networks with DHCP or a manual address configuration.
This occurred after the KB2809289 update was installed and the computer rebooted.  I uninstalled it but the problem did not go away.  I am unable to roll back to a prior restore point either, that keeps failing.
I have run with no positive results:
netsh int ip reset & netsh winsock reset
Something that's strange is that when the computer reboots I get a message about "Ruby interpreter stopped working".  Even after disabling all startup apps (but not services).  I'm not sure where this is coming from; I did a system search for the application name (rubyw.exe) and offending module (msvcrt-ruby191.dll) listed in the error message but the only hits were in Appdata/Local/Temp
Any help or suggestions on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Additional Info:
Chrome gives a message: Error 137 (net::ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED): Unknown error
Firefox gives " Server not found
IE will not open, it crashes without an error.

I run an old Hewlett-Packard PC which does not have Internet access, but can get the use of a PC that does. My OS is Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

I've just found that my Hitachi 320GB portable drive won't work on my own PC anymore (it makes a clicking sound - about 2 clicks per second - and it doesn't show up anywhere in Windows, not even Device Manager). On the other PC, though, it's fine.

I thought it might be a driver problem, but since this drive was 'plug and play' to the best of my recollection, I don't know if this is the case.

I've tried to do a drivers scan, but since I can't get the PC onto the Internet, I'm having no luck - the free driver scanner I've tried (Device Doctor) won't save its results so that I can transfer them to the Internet PC.

And I don't even know if this is a drivers problem anyway.

I'd be very grateful for any advice (try to put it simply, please, as I'm a bit of a beginner).

It seems to me that once in a blue moon, there will be a program that will work fine for a while, but then later refuse to run until I reinstall windows. The program that refuses to run this time is called Nebula (don't worry, it's freeware). I've even redownloaded a fresh copy and I get the same result. I double click the icon and nothing happens.

I would watch the processes in the task manager while I tried opening it. The process would appear for a moment, then disappear. I've opened up and watched Process Explorer ( carefully. I've taken note on what processes are running when I'm trying to open Nebula, by holding Enter with Nebula selected. The only process that is consistently working while I'm trying to open it, is explorer.exe, and I doubt that is the culprit.

Since I can't find anything in the processes, should I look for something in the registry? What else can I do to troubleshoot when this kind of stuff happens? Maybe it broke from one of the Windows updates?

Answer:Program worked fine before, won't work now.

Hello eriknoc, Welcome to TSF!

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD.

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

I dont know if anyone can help cause I've looked everywhere online.
For all the more graphically intense games eg: Age of Mythology (offline) , Ijji games, Combat Arms, Maple Story, etc. I've been having some really weird lag spikes that never happened before.

So the game starts off excellent, no lag whatsoever then 5, 10 minutes into the game huge lag spike.

For the fps games the frame isnt frozen just the other people. While my character moves around, a few seconds later people are 20 feet to the left.

Other games (Age of Mythology, Maplestory) is the same except it never really freezes but jumps and its really slow, even though it worked fine for the first few minutes.

I don't know if its my computer or the game. Can someone help?

My Computer Specs are:

HP Pavilion Desktop PC
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
699 GB Hard Drive space
7 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9100 Integrated Graphics

I assume you installed the Logitech keyboard drivers, correct?

If you did, you could just have a bad keyboard. It should still be under warranty, so take it back to where you got is and ask for a replacement.

I'm using Windows XP with all updates installed, including SP2, as well as DirectX 9.0c, 3GHz processor, 1GB system memory, ATI RADEON 9800 graphics card, VIA AC'97 surround sound, and a wireless internet adapter. Pretty top-end stuff, as far as I know, but it's acting like my old 233MHz computer now, and has been for roughly 2 months. I've only owned it since March!

Over time, my games have all started to crash after 5 minutes of play, regardless of graphical settings or of what I was doing at the time; on memorable occasions, Counter-Strike: Source has crashed before I joined a server. In addition, my computer's speed has slowed over time as well.

I have ZoneAlarm, SpywareBlaster, McAfee ViruScan, Ad-Aware, and The Cleaner installed, plus I use the utilities frequently, so there's no problem with viruses.

The fact that the games crash, on average, after the same length of time no matter how high or low my graphics (resolution, shader detail, full-screen or not, anti-aliasing etc.) are set, or what other programs are running (I've tried swapping out ZoneAlarm for SP2 firewall, turning off lots of unnecessary services and programs, etc.), suggests there's no problem with running out of memory; this idea is supported by the times I have run a game alongside the task manager, and seen that the game crashes do not coincide with a sudden/prolonged spike of memory, CPU or pagefile usage.

Hi folks,

I am hoping that one of you whizz kids can help me. For a few weeks now, IE7 only works around 50% of the time. When it stops working it attempts to connect to internet sites but nothing happens. It acts as if there is no internet connection at all. It is the same for all internet sites. I can try it again 10 minutes later (without re-booting the PC) and it will work fine again for a while.

My internet connection is 100% stable and other browsers such as Opera work fine, even when IE7 stops working.

I tried uninstalling SP3, SP2 and IE7 and reinstalling them all but it made no difference. I am currently running XP SP3. I tried posting in the virus/malware section of this site but the experts can see no evidence of any malware or trojans etc. My system appears clean.

Do any of you have any ideas why this is happening? It happens maybe 10 times per day on average and is very annoying.

Answer:IE7 not working. Other browsers work fine.

By the way, here is a screenshot of IE7 when it is trying to access Google.

I'm running Windows XP, Service Pack 3, 2002 version, Internet Explorer 8. Whenever I try and run Internet Explorer, it says that it can't display the page, for whatever reason, suggesting I diagnose connection problems. I've uninstalled all the toolbars I can find, but that doesn't help a bit. Yet I can properly browse the internet perfectly fine with Firefox 3.5.

It's worth noting two things: I recently had a virus infect the computer, posing as antispyware, which I had to wrestle with for an entire morning before Spybot S&D got rid of it. The second is that the MSHTML.DLL (when i use the command regsvr32 mshtml.dll in the Run window) "loads, but the DLLRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered."

Is there anything I can do about this? Any more information you might need?

Answer:IE8 won't work, but Firefox works fine

I actually fixed the problem myself:

I went to 'Internet Options' -> 'Connections' -> 'LAN Settings' -> and unchecked the proxy server option. Worked like a charm. (however, I think this is only for some types of internet connections. As in, it might not work for everyone, but probly will)

My Internet Connection is fine but I'm just having problems connecting to ONE site ( on the whole of cyberspace. Access was only broken since 2 days ago. I've changed nothing in terms of configuration. I just work up one morning and it became like that. T_T

I am using Netgear WGR614 v4 (Firmware is the lastest version.), Windows XP Professional SP2.

Measures I have taken so far:

1. Cleared Internet Cache and Cookies.
2. Rebooted router, modem and computer.

The above in your IPCONFIG list, is that a real network adapter or it is a VPN soft adapter? If so, do not use the VPN and try connecting to site the internet without going thru the VPN it to see what happens to accessing that site.

After two days of trying to install 7 pro 64. I worked out that by removing 2gb of ram I was able to install 7 without any problems. Before it would take hours and then eventually give up. If i try to add the other 2gb stick of ram it hangs at the windows logo.

Ive tried 7 32 bit and that worked fine with 4gb. Also vista 64 bit and that was fine also.

Any suggestions?

2.4ghz dual core, corsair ram, asus pn532 something, 1tb sata

Answer:Works fine with 2gb but doesnt work at all with 4gb?

We are discussing this already, as we have many times. Have a look.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit doesn't support 4GB RAM?

I'm running Win 7 Pro. After installing the Realtek High Definition Audio update, my speakers work fine, but my headphones don't . Say's headphones are not plugged in. Apparently this was a problem in Vista as well. Anyone know a solution? Thanks.

Answer:Speakers work fine but Headphones don't

Check the internal cabling between the front panel headphone/mic jacks and the motherboard connection for the HD front panel audio. Reseat the cable(s) (unplug then plug back in) at the motherboard end and at the front panel end.
