Vista Machine unable to print to Printer attached to 98 machine thru parallel port

Question: Vista Machine unable to print to Printer attached to 98 machine thru parallel port

We have replaced some of our machines and bought new systems with Vista, unfortunately we have a printing issue, none of the Vista users can access the shared printer attached to Window's 98 System on the parallel port.

Preferred Solution: Vista Machine unable to print to Printer attached to 98 machine thru parallel port

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 32 bit XP Professional computer. It has a Brother MFC 8500 and a HP 932C printer attached to it by usb wires. Both of these printers are shared. I have another windows VISTA ULTIMATE 64 BIT MACHINE NETWORKED .I can see my xp computer in the network. I can install the networked printers. I can print to hp 932c but not to brother mfc 8500.I can share the files no problem. I shall really appreciate if somebody can help me with it. Please and thank you for your precious input and time.

Answer:I can not print from a vista ultimate 64 bit machine to a networked printer attached

What happens when you try to print to the Brother printer? What's the exact error message, if any?

Have you updated the Brother printer's driver package recently? If not, you should try that.

Do you have a third machine (any Windows OS) that could be used to determine whether the problems printing to the Brother machine are specific to the Vista box?

I am trying to help a friend get her new Win-7 machine set up. I used the printer set-up wizard to install a networked printer in the new machine with absolutely no problem. Proved it would print from that machine.

Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print. Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed. No error messages show up. I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it. Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. I can't get any of the selections to install.

On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. Also, I somehow got to a window that told me that for printers that were to be shared with other versions of windows I could optionally install drivers to support such machines. Didn't have the driver disk handy and took the window down. Now I can't even find it again.

I need some help in sorting this all out. Part of the problem is that out there in "network land" there are redundant remnants of previous installations that are being remembered inappropriately. I'd really li... Read more

Hi, I am trying to use a software which uses a dongle that fits a parallel port. I have tried a USB-DB25 cable but it doesn't show up as a port, it is a USB device in the device mgr. Has anyone here accomplished something like this? How would I make this adapter be a true virtual parallel port?

Answer:Need a parallel port on a machine with only USB

Go into the BIOS and see if the parallel port is being detected, if so you may need to assign an IRC number and a memory location to enable it, just like in the old days, also be sure and contact the manufacturer to see if they have a winner for you.

I just replaced an XP machine with a new Vista 64 machine. We have a home network. My wife's computer is XP home and it has a Canon Pixma IP 4000 color printer hanging off one of your usb ports. I've always been able to print to it before Vista came into my life. Now when I try to connect to it I get a message saying "The server for the IP 4000 does not have the correct print driver installed". However, when I go to her XP machine it says it does have the latest driver installed. Why the hell can't Microsoft make a product that is simple to use? Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Or was Vista created to sell more printers?

I have a new Gateway Vista 64 machine for my office . The old HP Pavillion Pentium 4 with XP 32(?)is networked in other room Here's my setup:
Ethernet network with a new wireless Netgear router (yes,it has places to plug in the ethernet cords).
-HP Laserjet 1200 printer is plugged directly into the Vista 64 machine.
The XP Unit is on the network.
I can see and share files between the machines just fine but I get an error when choosing the networked printer in "add printer" when setting up XP unit.
(Print sharing is turned on on Vista Machine).
I choose the networked printer found on Gateway, it says that it will install drivers onto my machine to make things work, I click ok and it says that server for my printer has the wrong driver installed, would I like to find right driver? Clk yes. It looks for a VSFILE\XP but can't find it. It tells me to manually find the file but I can't find that file on HP site or any of my discs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled original drivers onto the XP machine (PCL6) and downloaded a Universal PCL5 printer file. None correct the problem. Vista automatically loaded the printer drivers when I turned on the power. It has a PCL5 file. The 1200 printer works fine when printing from Gateway machine. Vista will only let me use the drivers already installed in the machine. When I try to manually try to install drivers downloaded from HP for an XP on the the vista then it balks and says they were not created for an X6... Read more

Answer:Solved: XP machine can't print on networked Vista Machine

I ended up hiring someone to solve this mess. He just created local ports on each machine that directs the pre-downloaded, local driver, to the printers. Worked just fine. Start, Run, //"name of network" to see if printers can be seen on the network 1st.

But it functions fine on an XP machine.
Printer is Lexmark X-6675 had been on Win 7 machine, working OK.
A couple of days ago I scanned something and printed it out. I then went to Microsoft Works 9 to print a cover page and it would not print. Tried to cancel print job but no can do. Rebooted and when Windows was finished booting the cover page printed without my doing anything.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled hardware and software. It will not print any word processing , Wordpad, Notepad Acrobat. BUT "sometimes" it will print a black and white scan.
It will not cancel the 1st print job in queue BUT will cancel any others.
I fired up the old XP machine and installed the drivers there and it worked fine.
Where might my problem be in Windows?
Thanks for any assistance.

I work for a local high school and have been having a lot of problems sharing a printer attached to a Windows 2000 machine by an parallel cable. I'm trying to share the printer with 2 Windows XP Pro machines. All 3 PCs have the same logon and I have granted access to the printer for that account. File and printer sharing are also checked on all 3 PCs.

Here is a little more information since I had a lot of problems getting this to work. We have a LAN and Novell Server in the school, but the only manages the office PCs. All the PCs are part of workgroups with each room being its own workgroup. The 3 PCs I'm working with are attached to network drops. I could not use the Add Printer Wizard to have the two XP PCs find the printer after it was shared. I had to get the IP address of the 2000 machine and then type in that IP address under run on the two XP PCs. I then double clicked on the shared printer that showed up and installed the drivers. The printer shows up on the two XP PCs as HPDesk 990 on x.x.x.x (the IP address of the 2000 machine). When I first added the printer, it worked fine. After rebooting however, I cannot access it. It just shows Access Denied. The only thing I can think of is that the logon on Windows 2000 requires a password but you don't have to enter as password to login on the two XP machines.

Is there anything else I need to check for? Thanks.

Answer:Access denied when trying to share LPT attached printer on Win2K machine

Make sure those PCs are ALL in the SAME workgroup, otherwise NO share.
And using a password is a good thing for a flawless connection, even if all passwords are the same.

Hi ,

How can i select a usb port? Dotmatrix printer..
Currently im using windows vista

Anyone could help me?

Answer:USB Parallel Printer Port Vista Supported?

most USB printers require their own drivers because they are not standard USB-HID devices (which is all that Windows generally has built in). Hence why you're not seeing it in the default list. Grab the drivers for the printer from the respective web site and install them -- that should take care of your problem.

I just upgraded my home PC from XP to Windows 7 Professional, running on a 64-bit architecture.

This PC had, and still has, an old HP 920c inkjet printer (circa 2001) plugged into it. There are two other XP laptops in the house, an XP desktop, and a Windows 7 laptop. These all access the printer through our home wireless network. When my PC was running XP and hardwired to the printer, the other boxes could all use the printer.

However, since I upgraded the printer PC to Windows 7, only the Windows 7 laptop is able to print.

I can FIND the printer from the XP machines. I can ADD the printer to the printer list for those machines. But so far, I am failing to print from them.

My guess is that the cause is that the printer is now using a Windows 7 driver, being wired to a Win7 machine, and that maybe I need to somehow configure the XP computers with the XP driver (or the Windows 7 driver? - not sure which to use). HP Deskjet 920c Printer series*-* Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center is the page with the drivers for my printer.

Any suggestions, I'd appreciate - and yes, I realize that a good chunk of my question might be XP-related and not Windows 7, so I appreciate people's understanding here.

G'day all! (first post here!! :P) this is my situation:

I have a server...and i have installed a printer to it - the Canon LBP 3200 - the server is a 32bit machine running win7 pro...anyways...this printer does not have ANY 64bit drivers (which my main machine runs win7 ulti x64) so i am unable to install the printer on my main machine...

I was wondering, is there a way to share it from the server to the 64bit machine without installing any drivers?

Or is there a way to install 32bit drivers on a 64bit Machine?

Or can anyone find any 64 bit drivers/custom 64bit drivers?

Thanx all!!

Answer:Sharing a printer from 32bit machine to 64bit machine without drivers.

ok so i tried this method: Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

But when i make my own port name it says access is denied... :S

I would like to continue to use my old HP 5P computer that dates back to 1995. I just purchased a new Dell XPS420 computer running Windows Vista Home Edition. However, there is no parallel port on the new computer. Is there a cable that would connect to the end of the parallel cable from the HP printer and the free end would be a USB connection that I could then plug into the USB port on the Dell computer. Would this work?

I went to HP website and apparently the driver for the HP for Vista is the same one from Windows XP. Here is the HP information from their website:

I've not had positive experiences with parallel-to-USB cables. I can understand not wanting to throw out a piece of hardware that still appears to work, but you might want to reconsider given the cost of the cable, replacement toner cartridges, and even power consumption.

BUT the XP machine can't see the printer

I've checked Printer sharing on the vista machine
I've checked group name, etc.
I've checked firewalls and disabled them completely for the sake of the test
I've tried entering in the address of the printer on the vista machine manually
I've tried checking through the forum but so far they aren't applicable as I can see the files on the vista box from the XP box...

I have basically two questions.
1) does anyone know if Aloha Bob's PC Relocator Ultra can work with Vista?

2) Is anyone aware of anyproducts, preferably shareware or freeware that can migrate both data/settings and programs from Win98 to Vista Home Premium?

Answer:Moving from a Win98 machine to a Vista Machine

I don't imagine there are any software apps with that feature - any of them new enough to work with Vista would likely not bother with Win98. Data won't be hard to migrate, but I don't imagine Win98 programs would work the same on Vista... You will probably have to reinstall the programs - if they are compatible. (My CD burning software, for example, was compatible with XP but caused the PC to not boot when I tried to install it on Vista) Settings are probably going to be a lot different on Vista vs. Win98...

I've checked here and on a couple of other places; many people seem to have similar problems but not similar enough that I've been able to solve it.

I have a HOME workgroup on my Vista machine that is connected to the printer I want to share. I have made HOME the workgroup on my W7 laptop. The Vista machine is able to access folders on the W7 and the W7 "sees" the Vista machine... the network map on W7 shows a "dotted" line from W7 - Vista but when I try to connect from W7 to Vista it will not accept a logon. I have tried using my normal Vista machine User Name and password and even tried creating a new one just for this connection but Windows Security always says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

One of the other sites suggested that Client for Microsoft Networks needed to be installed on the W7 laptop but when I checked the properties for the W7 NIC there was no Install option... does W7 need Client for Microsoft Networks?

All settings on the Vista Sharing and Discovery are on.

Answer:Windows 7 machine cannot connect to Vista machine

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

This is driving me nuts! hehe... Seriously though, I have a laptop running windows XP and a desktop with Vista 64. The HP 932/930 printer is attached to the desktop unit. I've read and done everything on the page below to enable printer and file sharing...

I was able to get the printing on the laptop to work, but only after I did the following: try to access the Vista PC via the list workgroups computers, the laptop would ask for the username/password of the Vista PC, after that was entered, I could print but only until the lpatop was shutdown then you have to di it all over again. I don't want my username/password out there, so I disabled the need for passwords on Vista via the link above, but the laptop still asks for it and still won't print.

There seems to be endless articales on Google for prinitng from Vista to an XP connected printer, but mine is just the reverse. Has anyone else here run into this same situation?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I have recently opened a new hotel, and in our business center we have two new PC's running Windows Vista. I have a Lexmark 3600-4600 Series printer installed on workstation 1 and have it shared.

My problem is that I cannot find the printer when I search for it from the second workstation. I have browsed Microsoft's help files, as well as a few different forums, and have tried everything I can possibly think of.

Windows firewall is disabled, and while the PC's came with Norton, I have that firewall temporarily disabled on both machines. Still, I cannot find the printer.

I tried Adding New Printer, and typing in the name of the "host" computer followed by the name of the printer (\\computername\printername) but it cannot be found.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... I'm getting to the point where I want to throw myself, or the computers, out of the fourth floor window.

Answer:Cannot Find Printer installed on Vista machine from 2nd Vista Workstation

Disabling a third party firewall often does not mean that it will not interfere. It may require complete removal.

And do you have Windows Firewall enabled? Are both machines on the same subnet? What are their private IP addresses, subnet masks, and default gateway addresses? Can you access either by typing \\[computer IP address]? Can you ping either computer from the other?

Answer:problem installing apollo printer on e machine w/vista

since your printer is already a couple of years old, chances are those drivers are not compatable with Vista, check with the manufacturer web site to if they have updated drivers. Be advised that a lot of manufacturers do not upgrade their drivers from XP to Vista, this forces you to upgrade your products.

I did see where the Apollo homepage is up for sale

Also the latest drivers I could find were for XP

We type in the name of the computer it's hooked up to and the password we set up for it and get a message that the password or user name is wrong. What am I doing wrong?

Hello everyone. I am having a problem on a 32-bit home premium desktop and I first noticed it when it was unable to connect to the internet. I thought it was the network adaptor until testing it with another machine. The computer is unable to detect any networks. When I click on the ?diagnose why Windows cant find any networks? link Im told ?Network Diagnostics cannot run because the diagnostic policy service is not running. There is a tab that says ?click to open service control manager /you will need to manually start the diagnostic policy service. Once this service is started you can run network diagnostics.? Clicking this will prompt me to open an mmc.exe file. When I do it opens a window listing services. I right-click diagnostic policy service properties local computer and set the startup type to manual. But it always leads to another service that cannot be started like windows wireless service, security center service... audio service says it cannot be turned on. even system restore does work.. "system restore does not appear to be functioning correctly on the system. The volume shadow copy service used by system restore is not working.? I've run AVG and it detects nothing amiss.. ugh. Does this seem familiar to anyone? Where should I start?

It can't be this hard, and the answers I've googled just aren't working. Gotta be something simple. So. . . .
Main Computer is older Dell machine running XP Home SP3 w/ Norton Internet Security. Settings say firewall recognizes LInksys router / wireless Network
Secondary computer is 2 year old Vista Home Premium 32 HP notebook running same Norton. Settings say firewall recognizes LInksys wireless network / router as well.
I have set up a simple network where I can access virtually all files (including C:/) on the Dell XP system from the HP Vista Notebook. I treat the Dell system as sort of my home server. However, yesterday I realized I had never tried to access files on the HP Vista Notebook FROM the Dell Dell XP system. The ONLY folder that shares on the HP Vista Notebook is the PUBLIC folder (probably why they call it "public" right ?) I have, on the HP vista Notebook, set designated other folders to be "shared" on the Vista Machine, and they are recognized on the Dell XP machine. However, except for the Public folder, I get the "Access denied, talk to the server administrator. . . ." when I click on the VISTA folder while in the XP machine's my network places.

One post went so far as to say to set up a "user account" on the Vista Machine with the computer name of the XP machina. Well, I did that. Don't think that works. For a couple of vista folders, I got sneaky and copied a shortcut from that folder in... Read more

I have my first windows 7 computer on my home network, and it appears to me I have outgoing networking, but not incoming. On the Windows 7 computer, I can get to the router and the Internet, and can access shared folders on Vista machines on the home network. The computer name "advertising protocol" works as the name of the Windows 7 computer in the "Network" user interface on the Vista machines (the user interface accessed from Network and Sharing Center by 'view computers and devices"), but attempting to access it gets a "cannot access" error, and attmepting to diagnose gets a "cannot find" error. For whatever it is worth, highlighting the icon in the "network" user interface does not show anything for "location".

I am going through this to get shared folders on the Windows 7 computer visible on other computers on the network. Obviously this is not working. Just to recap the configuration:
1) all computers on the network are members of same Workgroup
2) My documents on the Windows 7 computer are shared read-write with everyone
3) advance sharing options show:
Network discovery ON
File and print sharing ON
Public folder sharing ON
128 bit encryption
Password protected sharing OFF
IPv6 disabled
Homegroup stuff either OFF or ON and managed by Windows (but this is irrelevant)
4) firewall off

A observation:
I noticed something funky with MacIDs. the router - when the Windows 7 computer authenticates - sh... Read more

Answer:Cannot ping W7 machine from any vista machine

Why is IPv6 disabled? You do realize that IPv6 is only used on the LAN and is needed for Homegroups to work correctly. Maybe you were just thrown off by the first picture below which is only telling you that IPv6 is not connected to the WAN because it's not supposed to be.

The second picture shows it as enabled for the LAN.
It doesn't matter much either way unless you are Homegroup, but Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers. For Vista and Win 7 you need to use either workgroup or public file sharing. You also need to enable file sharing on the Vista machine.

You should not need to turn the firewall off.

Are you sure that you are sharing the correct group. There is a seperate public file sharing settings page but the workgroup and homegroup use the same settings page.

Maybe you were thrown off because there are two settings pages. The third picture is the Homegroup and Workgroup settings page and the fourth one is for the Public file sharing.

Hi all,

At work we installed 2 new desktop computers in a network with windows 7 so we had to update our Canon IR 2200 driver to make the printer work properly.

Sometimes when we want to print files the machine is printing nonsense (zdingbats on the upper side of the paper but only a few lines not the whole page) and we have to cancel the printing task on the printer because apparently once it starts it won't stop.

On the screen of the printer in the journal there is written:
document name: parallel port print job (instead of microsoft word, excel, ...)
username: / (instead of the name of our network)

Could someone tell me if this problem is due to a bug in the driver or is there something wrong with the connexion?

Thank you very much in advance.

Answer:Parallel port print job error

I had a similar issue before one of the old printers a friend used at his car dealership for drafting contracts.
I was finally able to fix the problem by buying a usb to parallel cable.
Then it was just a matter of setting the print server to see it as usb and then everything handled fine.
That was Vista though. Knowing win 7 this might have something to do with power management.
Whatever machine is the print host I would make sure all it's power saving features were disabled and see if the problem resolves.

A friend of a friends mom heard that I was a computer guy so her laptop got handed off to me to fix. I received no information as to what the problem was or when it started giving them trouble, they just said its slow and they cant get online. I removed quite a bit of malware and a rootkit and I thought my troubles were over. I was able to get online with IE8 (Not Chrome or Firefox though) that day and do a Windows update, but I havent been able to get back online since. I've re-ran SAS, ComboFix and TDSS and none of them come up with anything. I've checked to see if its using a proxy but I didn't see any.

Windows Vista
Has valid IP address (wired and wireless)
Able to ping sites like and get a response
Same results when booting into safemode with networking

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Parallel Port(printer port) CPU transfer-HELP!

When you get the cable from Radio Shack, make sure that you get the computer to computer and I will recommend parallel over the serial. Windows computers come with Direct Cable Connection. Start,,,Programs,,,Accessories or then under Communications. It works for Windows 95, 98, and ME. I can not vouch for NT or 2000. Make sure that you have ipx/spx protocal under Control Panel,,,,Network... also under the Identification tab, make sure the workstation is the same.

Also make sure each has file and printer sharing and that a folder is set for sharing on your host...

The files needed will be on your Windows Install disks, unless you are using Windows 95a..

Answer:Parallel port does not talk to Printer

Possibly the parallel port connector on the motherboard has failed. This can easily happen if a device has been "hot-plugged" into the port, that is to say connected whilst the computer is switched on. If this is the case, it is not repairable but you can get parallel port PCI cards.

I've got a printer that's hooked up to the parallel port at the back of my computer, but the computer refuses to realize that it's there. What is the cause of this?

Answer:Parallel port not recognizing printer

Could be a number of things:
1. Parallel is disabled in CMOS
2. Device Manager has an error with Parallel Port
3. Your Printer Drivers are corrupt, or partially loaded
4. You have a Virus/Trojan
5. The Printer is off, or has malfunctioned
6. The Parallel cord or computer connection is faulty

Also what is the name and model number of your Printer?
What OS are you running?
And have you thought of updating to a newer USB? (they've been around for years now!)

Ran this through one of the other forums, only 1 response which did not help, so I hope no one minds me trying here before I go out and spend some money. This is a pentium 2 Micron computer running 98se, I have tried hooking up known working printer with right driver, and known working Iomega 250 zip known working with right driver, both tried on another 98se machine with no problems. This is a second hand comp, and I know not what the previous owners have done. The cables are on, and tight, the LPT-1 port is shown in device mgr, and it looks like there are no problems with it, although I do have a ! next to one of the com ports(it has no number attached to it, it just says com port). The parallel LPT-1 shows up as using IRQ 7 all by itself, and as far as I can tell seems to have no conflicts. Just wondering if anyone feels like trying to help my troubleshoot this beast, it would be appreciated, since I am a real dunce when it comes to ports. Thanks for the time, and any assistance.

Answer:Connect fax machine with RJ11 port to PC with RJ45 port

If the fax machine only has a standard phone jack (RJ11) then it cannot be connected to your computer. If it was intended to be connected to a computer it would have had a USB jack. Having a network jack (RJ45) would be less common but would mean that it was intended to be networked. There are fax machines and all-in-one machines available that would do what you want but that would require purchasing new hardware. Ok, let me lay this one on you fine ladies and gentlemen:
Have new Dell Vostro with Vista computer to replace (ack) Windows 98 system (Pentium I or II was it?). New Dell does not have a parallel printer port. My printer is a very faithful Oki 320 Turbo Microline for printing out two part invoices. My software program is a DOS based (god love 'em) package that of course only recognizes LPT1. I emulate the driver language which must be set. I am on a LAN, but this printer needs to be physically attached to this new computer. I've used net use for other requirements, but never with this exact problem before (usb port on computer to parallel printer connection on printer). The cable says, ahem, "True PnP and Bi-directional printing" is usb on one end and that Bidirectional style of parallel (i think it's called IEEE Universal printer plug) that connects to my printer on the other end. I may actually be dealing with two problems, as after I plugged in the cable it says it's recognized it and is ready to go. Then plug in the printer and it knows somethings plugged in, but doesn't know it's a printer. I then install the latest printer driver, says its ready to go, print out a test page (this is still all within vista, not the dos software), and nothing happens. It says the print has printed but remains in the que and eventually has to be deleted. I also tried from within the DOS software, because it just prints raw to the printer using the emu... Read more

I've had a Canon scanner and printer for about 5 years and both worked without a hitch. The other day I scanned a doc to be printed and it went fine except when I tried to scan and print another doc right afterwards... I got an error code 0x00060800 and a message saying that '...parallel port may be used by another application...' The only way I can get things to work is to reboot the computer. Canon customer service suggested I do the following: ...set printer to 'print directly to printer'...'set parallel ports to ECP'...I also set the printer port Resource filter settings (in Device manager) to either 'never use an interrupt' or 'Use any interrupt assigned to port'. None of these things have made any difference. All drivers are up to date. As an experiment I disconnected/connected the printer and I was able to scan/print the second doc. I've also scanned the ECP port for hardware changes. What else can I do??
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi; I've just reconnected my kyocera fs3800 laser printer with a usb to parallel cable, forgetting that it was still  turned on. I know that this is a VERY BAD thing to do (to paraphrase the manual); there's no communication between my xp PC which says "printer ready" and "failed to print", and the printer which will happily print a self-test page, and says "printer ready" on its display. I've tried printing from various programmes with the same result; therefore I've either fried the cable or, more likely, something inside the printer. Do printers have anything like a fuse protecting the ports? I expect the most economic thing is to buy another printer, which is fairly cheap,(reconditioned)  but I don't like chucking things if they can be easily fixed.  I might have known this was going to happen as I'd just bought two new toner kits for it, each costing more than the reconditioned printer !thanks.

Do you have an out on your scanner (the in already connected to your printer) ? Or do you have an in and an out port on your new cd writer ?Basically, connect it which ever way it can go and try it

I have a laptop 2.5" hard drive hooked up using a IDE to USB cable. I positively know this hard drive has viruses. My PC doesn't and is protected with Microsoft's OneCare and is up-to-date.

When I plug in the laptop drive into my PC using the USB cable, is my PC protected so that I can scan the laptop hard drive and remove the viruses?

If not, what options do I have?

P.S. The laptop that the hard drive came from is dead. I simply want to save some data from the hard drive first and then I'll format it to be used again later.

Answer:Scannng another hard drive attached to my machine

Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.Hold down the Shift key when inserting the drive until Windows detects it to keep autorun.inf from executing if it is present.Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.Reboot your computer when done.Note: As part of its routine, Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive that was plugged in when you ran it. Do not delete this will help protect your drives from future infection by keeping the autorun file from being installed on the root drive and running other malicious files.Use the shift button and this immunization, treat the drive like a flash driveBe sure and scan anything you want to save before copying it or opening itThere's some nasty stuff out there

Answer:Machine Running Slow - Hijackthis Log Attached

Our apology for the delay in responding. The workload on this forum is intense, and sometimes it is not possible to respond to every inquiry. The version of HijackThis you are running is Beta, a product that is normally in its final stages of testing. Often, a Beta version of a product may contain minor bugs, so let?s work with final version 1.99.1 instead.Use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove HijackThis v2. Then, do a search and also delete any Folders or Files the program created.Next, install HijackThis v1.99.1: installs to its own foder (C:\Program Files\HijackThis), makes an entry in the Start Menu, and also provides a Desktop shortcut: Click on the link Select: SaveSave the program to the Desktop Double click HJTsetup.exeFollow the promptsNext, when HijackThis opens, select: Do a system scan and save a log file. When the scan is finished, please provide the contents of the HijackThis log in your reply.

This a friend's machine and he asked me to take a look at it. Apparently when he logged into his AOL email account of 15 yrs he was promptly notified by tech support to call them. He did and the rep i India asked he had been using his free account to do "bulk mailing" to which he replied, "No". They advised him to run his antivirus and change his password. He did and called me to take a look at his machine. I have followed the removal guide posted the logs. When running HitmanPro I decided to quarantine the result it found because it identified it as a Trojan. I know I am not supposed to take action and ignore until the logs are read, but figured it wouldn't hurt. Antivirus didn't catch it so it may be a false positive. Thanks in advance.

Answer:XP Pro SP3 machine accused by AOL of spamming - Logs attached

Your logs are clean. You just need to use windows explorer to find and delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\Ted\Templates\jq1tx073x5uq61p4skb050g8hnwmd

What issues are you still having and did you use a different computer to change your passwords?

So I have an interesting situation here. A client of mine uses an old dos based database program that can't print to any printer that uses a USB connection, but it works fine with parallel. I've just upgraded them to Windows 7, and some of their printers (which I didn't know at the time, I wish I did), don't have compatible Win7 drivers. Does anybody here know of a new model printer that still can use a parallel port and works with windows 7? I know HP Laserjet 1300 works, because they have several of those, but I'm hoping I can find actual new machines (it's a longshot, I know).

Answer:Need a Win7 Compatible Parallel Port Laser Printer

What model printer are they using now, and can you get it to work with any of the inbox (and generic) HP Laserjet drivers?

My PC doesnt have a parallel port. My printer is not USB-capable. So, I connected an adapter (9-pin plug in one end/25-pin plug other end) to the 9-pin serial port of the PC and plugged the printer cable in the adapter. On connecting, the PC communicated w/the printer because a paper came out with a single black square on top. But I could not get it to print again. I tried printing directly from CMD prompt to LPT1; then tried COM1 and COM2 - No luck. Any suggestions? The printer is a discontinued HP Laserjet 4000 - it may have a serial port, in which case I may go from serial to serial but, is that okay? Thanks for your help.

Hi Adrian

Possible but difficult. You are going to have to install it locally first on both machines so the correct driver gets installed. then share it on what ever machine you want to use it.

I have no problem connecting my laptop (Win Me) to my workstation (W2K SP2) with a direct cable between the computer's parallel ports. However, The W2K workstation will not allow my laptop to reconnect at a later time after I have disconnected. For example: I connect successfully. When I'm finished transferring files, etc. I disconnect the guest compter (laptop) from the host (W2K) by clicking on the disconnect button in the Direct Cable Connection Window on the laptop. If, later, I attempt to connect again the attempt fails. The laptop displays a message saying it cant find the host computer. The only way to resolve this problem is to re-boot the W2k workstation. After a re-boot I can connect. Only re-booting the laptop does not resolve this problem. The problem is with the W2K workstation. Having to re-boot every time I want to transfer files from my laptop to my workstation is ridiculous. The event viewer does not log an error. This problem occurs no matter which user is logged on to the workstation. (Administrator or regular user) Does anyone have any suggestions?

Could I get some help with this BSOD error.

The Log file is attached.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:BSOD Machine-check exception - Log file attached

There are no memory dumps in your log - see if you have a file named "memory.dmp" in the \Windows directory. If not, configure your machine for a kernel dump. After the next crash you can zip it up, post it to an external site, and then link here for analysis.

A friend of mine passed this laptop to me to look at because he claims it's slow and has popups in IE. I reset IE settings and ran the necessary scans with logs attached. I don't really see any serious malware or viruses to speak of. He has had this machine stored for a year after it was briefly used by his cousin that he claims trashed it surfing for porn.

I removed the items that RogueKiller found and quarantined the items Malawarebytes found. I ran Hitman and did nothing but make a log. The machine doesn't have the "snap" like a new machine should. It takes times for applications to load or make changes. BTW Malwarebytes now uses an xml log instead of a text log int he default location. The file uploader wouldn't accept the xml log version so I attached a text version like the old days.

It is a like new Acer V3-551-8887 with the protective film still on it. The only security I saw was Microsoft Essentials installed 360 days from today.

I just want a set of eyes on the logs to tell me the are clean so I can give it back to him.

Answer:Logs attached for review - Machine is slow with popups

Re run Malware Bytes. Does it still find garbage? If so have it remove it.

Re run Hitman and have it remove the little it finds.

Apart from this, I'm not seeing anything to do.

I have spend the last 10 stupid days, all of which were stupid, trying to analyze what happened.
I thought it was a corrupted windows file. As it turns out, and I have examined my boot log file which I created, this file is a new virus, hxxp://
which was detected by Mcafee on 5/20/09. I have just updated my .dat file for my virus scan and I'm now scanning, again..... all 370,000 files on my seagate hard drive. This first time I ran the scan, there were about 24 files which were quaranteened. I'm not sure where they are placed.

My machine will not boot. Here is the boot log from ntbtlog.txt:

Answer:Machine will not boot- black screen with which mouse- PCIDump.sys virus has clobbered my machine..

1. What version of Windows are you using?
2. What anti virus are you using? I see you mention McAfee but only in that they detected it (unless you're saying that YOUR McAfee scanner found it).
3. Have you tried booting into safe mode?
4. If its a virus, you know you were infected. Is there a way for you to scan that drive for spyware? (either hook it up in another computer, hook it up as an external drive to another computer, or create a boot disk with spyware scanning on it such as UBCD)

Last night I just got my brand new Athlon XP 1500. Anway It's running WindowsXP. I have been trying all morning to connect it to my old laptop (running Windows 98) using Direct Cable Connection. The AthlonXP is the Host and the Laptop is the Guest. I can get both computers connected fine, BUT when I try to get the Laptop to view the AthlonXPs files it asks me for the name of the AthlonXP as well as a password. I type in the name of the PC (there is no password). I try clicking ok, but it tells me the passoword is incorrect. There is no passwords setup on the AthlonXP at all! Please help. Thanks.

First of all I can't download MGTools with AV disabled as I once could. I read the warning but browsers block it anyway. I'm still trying to use the machine daily so can't remove AV at this time. Hoping just simple BHO. Thanks in advance.

My machine is laggy and lethargic. When I type as I am here it lags in between letters/words and sometimes cause misspellings. I'm not sure what happened this time since I'm a system builder and very cautious about where I surf and such. I know I have some items running in memory but this seems different than usual. Much slower reaction time to typing tasks and browser windows flicker when transitioning from browser to browser to tab to tab. Just wanted to see if you notice anything in the logs especially roguekiller.

Can't download MGTools but can download HJT and provide logs. A lot of "O's" in that list with missing files.

Yes you can. You just have to tell it to download it anyway and don't allow it to be deleted. I do his all the time on Vista thru Win 8 PCs without a problem.

We need this log to continue especially since the symptoms your are complaining about are more frequently not due to malware. And the logs you have attached thus far do not really show any issues.
