Windows update will not check for updates

Question: Windows update will not check for updates

Hi

I have recently been having problems with windows update and many other things. Basically it won't check for updates. When you click to check for updates, the bar starts but stays stuck searching. I then also notices microsoft security essentials does the same when u try and update. AVG free failed to install and I tried installing google chrome because I hate explorer and it also failed due to windows installer error. I tried manually installing service pack 2 from windows and it also failed. Nothing windows based will update.

I first noticed all this when I moved in with my girlfriend and started using her laptop. It is a decent laptop and the first thing I noticed it was a bit sluggish and I checked the CPU usage and one thing was hogging 70% all the time. It was windows error reporting or something similar which I disabled through systems, but nothing changed. Thats when I tried to update windows and it had 1 important update and 2 optional which I did. I remember one completed and 2 failed I think and after I restarted the computer the updater has not been working at all.

I got tune up utilities but it did not change anything after cleaning up various things. I also got rid one one malware thing from a free month trial with malwarebytes I think.

I have seen people talking about command prompts and cleaning registries but I cant get them to work properly.

I do not get errors report codes which is also a problem because its always frozen on checking for updates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.]

Thankyou

Preferred Solution: Windows update will not check for updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Windows update will not check for updates

From the MSE FAQ. I copied from my Help Section
When using Microsoft Security Essentials, you may receive a message that refers to virus and spyware definition updates in one of the following situations:
You receive a notification that you should check for new virus and spyware definition updatesWhen you try to check for updates, you receive an error message that the virus and spyware definition updates cannot be checked, downloaded, or installedFollow these simple steps to resolve this problem.
Step 1: Make sure you're connected to the Internet
Microsoft Security Essentials can't update its virus & spyware definitions if you aren't connected to the Internet. If you can't connect to the Internet, see I can't connect to the Internet issue (General topic).Restart your computer, and then try to install Microsoft Security Essentials again.Step 2: Make sure the date and time are set correctly on your computer

?or?
In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type appwiz.cpl, and then press ENTER.In the list of installed programs, uninstall any third-party Internet security programs.*Restart your computer, and then try to install Microsoft Security Essentials again.Note: *Some Internet security applications do not uninstall completely. You may need to download and run a cleanup utility for your previous security application in order for it to be completely removed
Caution: When you remove Internet security programs, your computer is unprotected. If you have problems installing Microsoft Security Essentials after you remove existing Internet security programs, contact Microsoft Security Essentials Support immediately by submitting a case online (see How to submit a case online for details).
Step 5: Check for virus and spyware definition updates in Microsoft Security Essentials
Open Microsoft Security Essentials.Click the Update tab, and then click Update. If these steps don't resolve the issue, then update the virus and spyware definitions manually by following the steps below.Step 6: Manually install the virus and spyware definition updates

Hello,

I just installed Win7 on my Asus K95VJ laptop and Windows Update is not working. I tried the troubleshooting from Microsoft "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates" error message when you try to install updates but without any luck.
If I select from that webpage to automatically fix my problem, I get the results from my Untitled2.jpg printscreen.
When I go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services, the 3 services that are required for Windows Update to work appear with status Started, but not Running. See my Untitled.jpg printscreen. I tried restarting them without any luck.
I don't know what to do anymore and I don't understand why it's not working... please help me out.

Answer:Windows Update cannot currently check for updates...

Well, this is awkward, but I fixed it I found the solution somewhere else. I had to go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs and delete edb.log (it's a .txt file), then restart the computer. For I don't know what stupid reason, that edb file was corrupt and prevent Windows Update from running. Deleting it made Windows replace it with a brand new one and fixed my problem.

I get this message when I check for updates....
"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"

The Check for Updates option in the Windows Update window, has a red shield with a cross in it, and I get the "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer" message when I click the Check for Updates button.

Coincidentally, Search Indexing is also not working.

I don't know when this all started, but it seems that it may have started when I did a system clone of my original system HDD using AOMEI Backupper Professional Edition 2.2

The new HDD (which is the clone) all works fine as far as I can see, except for the two issues.

I have tried various Microsoft Fixits, Cmd processes as well as SFC, and started services in Services (Local), all to no avail.

Here is the CBS.log , the rest of the contents of the CBS Folder is too large to upload here, but besides CBS.log it contains:
cbs.bld

When I check for updates, I get the following error:

---------------------------
Windows could not search for new updates
An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 80073712  Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
---------------------------

I noticed this because the "New updates are available" always displays at the bottom task bar (by the clock) and shows the same two updates that have already been installed:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2676562)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2813170)

I've tried running the "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt but get the following message & error:

Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

Thanks.

Answer:Windows Update - Cannot Check for Updates

Sounds like you have some corrupt Windows update components. By chance have you tried a System Restore? This may not correct your issue if there are corrupt components, but may be worth trying. Also if you have a System Repair Disk or OEM Windows Installation DVD. Both of these will repair any corrupt files.

Hi everyone,

Hope you guys won't mind helping me with this issue. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Edition.

I recently noticed that it's been 2 weeks since my laptop scheduled an auto installation of windows updates on Sundays so I decided to check if any new ones were available. When I clicked on Check For Updates, I received the following message:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

I restarted but nothing changed. I also went into the settings and selected never update, applied, then exited, then went back and re-selected auto update and install and applied but again, the same result.

I have no idea how to restart or reset the windows update so it will work.

I would really appreciate if you could please help me correct this problem.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to your replies.
Best regards!

So my copy of windows 10 is ready, and i want to update everything else beforehand. but i go into windows update, and when i hit "check for updates" it says checking, then returns an error code 80244019. i already tried running the windows update troubleshooter app from their website...no luck with that. it says fixed, but i still have the same issue.
i'm assuming this is the reason that when i click "lets continue" on the windows 10 update notification, its just says "working on it" for infinity.
i have not tried booting in safe mode yet, because the last time i tried that, something happened and i couldnt log back into windows and ended up having to bring it to the microsoft store and had to have them clean install windows.
any thoughts?

I recently installed Windows 7 on a new computer. When I was trying to install program, it told me that it could not proceed without updating .net and it instructed me to run Windows Update. When I tried, I got the message "Windows Update cannot check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I have done that several times now but still get the same message. I know how to check my services just do not know which one is the problem.

Thanks

Hello Everyone:
I am unable to receive Windows updates. Even manual updates won't work. This seems to have started when I upgrade my Hard Drive to a Momentus xt 750GB (Hybrid Drive)

I combed the network and try all solution suggested. I reverted to drive images made at various time. No luck.

The first message when I click is Windows Update Checjk for update for your computer. Then Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer,

It doesn't appear to be a virus: Fresh installs won't clear the and my Norton has always been up to date. I even run Windows Malicious detector. Zero issues.

What I come to think of is a compatibility issue: 512b then, 4kb now? I know there has been a patch and I use routinely external HD of High capacity.

I would appreciate some help if you can. Again, I don't think it is a virus.

Many thanks.

Hello,

I recently reinstall my windows x64 ultimate edition and after several installations (microsoft updates and some drivers on my own), it appears that microsoft update is failing.

When I look at the control panel/windows update windows there is no error code, juste the white cross with a red background indicating : "check for updates for your computer".

When I hit check for updates : "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer".

In services.msc the service is running.

the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) fail to install : error 0xc8000247
I run a SFC /SCANNOW directly on win7, the window close by itself.

Thanks a lot for your help.

You could use the tutorial below to restore the Windows Update service. In addition, make sure that you have the Background Intelligent Transfer Service as well.Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 7
Afterwards, see if you are able to run Windows Update. If not, then use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to reset and re-register Windows Update to see if you may be able to afterwards.Windows Update - Reset

Hi
Today it dawned on me i had not seen any windows updates in quiet some time and also my AV Eset had not indicated updates were available either. When attempting to check updates via control panel it hung for quiet some time with a blue spinning circle the eventually took me to the check for updates screen which is red. After clicking the update button i received the dreaded notice"Windows cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running",after readiing up on the problem i have tried the various Microsoft fixes that state they have fixed various problems but still cant update,i have tried stopping the update service and deleting the software folder and restarting the update service but still nothing.
At a guess i think the last updates i did was the November ones which finished with a some updates failed to install properly.
I have also tried the downloads Brink has posted on the site but this has not resolved the problem so i guess its over to you guys/gals to try and help me fix this problem.
Thanks in advance.

BEFORE doing anything drastic such as resetting WU, try this -

Windows Update Settings - Change

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update

I'm a computer tech here in KS. I've been working on a customers laptop since I came in this morning, and this problem is driving me mad. In the past I've rendered good results from support at bleepingcomputers, and hope the same in this situation.

Basically, this customers laptop refuses to allow updates. Any microsoft KB article related to this problem I have done, and redone, as well as various suggestions on the net. I just recently tried reseting the update system, and BITS, with no luck because now when I try to re enable update and bits through cmd as administrator, I now get an access denied return.

Like I said, I've tried everything short of reinstalling (we make it a policy to stray from reformats or re-installs); I can't even do an upgrade in any timely fasion because as usual, the customer forgot to bring their disk while they are running vista x64, and I just have the 32 bit disk. I've heard repair via upgrade works, but that isn't an option.

So I need to get rid of the access is denied, and see if any of my efforts have paid off which I highly doubt.

Thanks in advance for any help!

When I click on windows update a box appears with a red shield and when I click on that another box opens that says: "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates, Because The Service Is Not Running. You may need to restart your computer."

I should point out that this happened after the following:
HDD failed, installed a new HDD - same spec and size.
I started the computer with the Windows7 Repair disk that I made up last year.
I reinstalled a system image that I saved 2 months ago.

Now I can't seem to update windows.
Is there a way to get a new windows 7 downloaded to my HDD I have my 25 digit code.

I would like to be able to use (ie- not loose) the data and programs that are in the system image.

Thanks for your help

Alright, I've checked the posting instructions, and let's get that out of the way.

1. Tried to install SURT, I get the following error;

Quote:
Installer encountered an error: 0x80070424
The specified service does not exist as an installed service

2. sfc /scannow
The verification was able to complete up to 58% at which it gave the error

Quote:
Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation

3. No Windows Update error codes, it just says 'Check for updates for your computer' with a big red X icon

4. Log collection
I tried to attach the CBS.zip but it's 10mb, and this forum has an 8mb limit.

Okay, so I am reserving Windows 10 for the various computers at home, and when I try to update this computer which I use as an HTPC, I know I need update KB3035583 to get the option to reserve Windows 10, but when I go to do so, Windows Update tells me it can't check for updates because it's not running. I tried manually turning it on via an elevated command prompt but that doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

BUT now I get a new error,

after retrying, I get another error,

Quote:

After running Microsoft's Fix It for Windows Update, I get the error

Quote:
Compressed (zipped) folders error
File not found or no read permission

With an OK button and I haven't found a way to run the Fix It as admin.

After Fix It completes, I get the following

Quote:
Some security settings are missing or have been changed - Not Fixed

I have this problem for a long time on my laptop, windows update does not automatically search for updates, I have to do a manual search to download the latest updates.

I have run the microsoft problem solver, also one that I found in this forum, I have installed and reinstalled W10 hundreds of times, but nothing fixes it, I have resorted to microsoft support and they do not give me answer. My operating system is original, came with the computer. Nor is it my laptop, I have installed windows 7 and windows update works perfectly.

I have 10 computers networked together with a Windows SBS11 server as a domain controller. Of the 10 computers 6 of them are Windows 7 Pro (64bit) and the other 4 are Windows Vista Pro (32bit). About a month ago all the Vista Computers stopped downloading updates and giving an error, "Windows can't check for updates" message. When you attempt to check for updates manually or automatically the error is displayed, however there isn't any issue with updates being downloaded and installed to the Windows 7 computers.

I've tried the following:
- Ran System Update Readiness Tool.
- Running Malware Bytes and Vipre Anti-Virus scans in Safemode. No infections found.
- Disabled Firewall and reran search.
- Reset proxy, using the netsh winhttp from the command prompt.
- Restarted Windows Update Services.
- Ensured that the BITS Service was running.
- Updated GPO to not Windows Updates to be configured on the computers.
- Changed settings in Windows Update to allow manually updating. Allowed for the updates to be installed, but after reboot computer reverted back to old settings and error appeared.

If there are any other suggestions I would be greatly appreciate them.

I am working a computer that has new install of Vista with SP2 but will not run windows update. All drivers are installed from Dell website. Norton 2013 is running and up to date.
The error I get is "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."
I have tried stopping and starting BITS, Remote Procedure Call, Windows Updater then I tried removing the Software Distribution folder files; then stopping and starting Wuauserv in command line. Still does not work. Am at a loss.

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

FYI. I ran ComboFix before realizing that I should wait until instructed to. I have it in my C: directory if it is of any help.

It can take around 3-5 minutes to search for updates on W7, I've noticed it taking longer for the last past couple months. Is there anyway to fix it?

I think it's a general thing, and not just you. I've noticed it on all the machines I regularly end up updating as well.

Hey everyone. I recently did a factory reset on my computer and so I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Anyway, I have managed to get some updates from Windows Update installed but now I am trying to check for updates and it is taking forever for it to complete the process of checking for updates. It's been checking for updates for over an hour. I could really use some help in fixing this.

I've had this error on a few occasions and have managed to work round it by doing a rollback or using an Acronis backup but this time no luck. I have tried 3 times from different backups and each time I end up with the same error where Window Updates no longer works, all unfinished updates disappear from the list and when I turned the computer off it finished off many updates though there were a lot missing. To add to this every time I turn the computer on it downloads the same 10 updates and installs them when the computer is turned off, though they never show up in the Windows Updates panel.

I have tried using the following in an attempt to fix the problem:

Windows Action Centre - nothing suggested.

Microsoft Fixit (Online) - no success

Fixit Tool 50202 - no success

System Update Readiness Tool KB947821 - this fixed some error but not 8007370B

Disk Check - no errors (files or bad sectors)

sfc /scannow - I get the "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested action" message. I have tried running this from within Windows and from a command line, also from safe mode. Even tried the icacls command to revert file/folder permissions with no success.

The only other thing I can add it that I do not have a Windows 7 disc, only a recovery partition plus a Win7 service pack 1 disc. Unfortunately I purchased from Mesh just before they went into liquidation.

A local computer repair shop did a lot of damage to my HP Pavilion Elite with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I believe they broke the windows update tool and I have tried 4 or 5 ways to fix it that haven't worked yet. I'm hoping someone else has an idea.

Restart computer, same error.
Check Running services, "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service says "started."

Answer:Request for Assistance - Windows Update Could Not Check for Updates

Hello madsent and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sometimes it's necessary to run SFC three or more times to fix problems. After running SFC at least 3 times and rebooting the computer after each scan, try the SURT again. (See Option Two, Step 4 note.)

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If still no joy you could try doing a Repair Install. If successful it will fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc.

Hello,

We have 5 workstations running Windows 10 ENT 1607 - all are installed via MDT and are managed to a small degree by a handful of basic GP settings. I also have WSUS running here at home - allowing me to manage the update process with ease.

All 5 stations are accessing WSUS using settings created and placed in the registry using the freeware WSUSClientManager tool out there on the internet. This tool has been flawless in creating the correct settings and allowing all machine to hit WSUS without fail.

However - for the June 2017 patch window - I discovered one of our machines was suddenly not able to update correctly. In the screen below - the station is seeing WSUS and is getting the correct three updates it needs. But notice that the Install Now button cannot be pressed.

I first thought it maybe a corrupt WU layout or possible some GP settings gone bad. So I stripped the GP back to default and forced a gpupdate /force command. Then I deleted all WU settings placed by the WSUSClientManager tool and restarted. Still locked out. So I then ran the latest WUTroubleshooter to essentially reset WU back to scratch. Rebooted. Went into the WU Dialog and see something slightly different:

But the bloody "Some settings are managed..." message is still displayed. Making it impossible to even click on Check For Updates

NOTE: I have tried every article I can find that suggests the this "Some settings are managed" message hanging around is some old bug ... Read more

Coincidentally, when I try to install Microsoft .Net Framework 4, the same error code appears and the program refuses to install. Could it be related?

Windows Update error code 80070490 appeared on 20 September 2013 and message "Windows can't check for updates". I use Windows Vista Home basic 32 bit, Service Pack 2. I tried almost all suggestions in Internet (including these on Microsoft Web-page) about this how to fix this problem, including Microsoft Fix It, System Update Readiness Tool, Windows Update Diagnostics DIAGCAB file and etc., but the message continue to appear. The last successful update was on 13.09.2013. All updates made before and on 13 September are written as "successful" in "Update history" folder, but when I open "Installed Updates" folder, I don't see nothing and there is written "No updates are installed on this computer", which is strange, because by this moment Windows Update was made automatically without any problems. Dell Optiplex 755, Win 7 Home. I have inherited this PC from the estate of a deceased uncle. I was with him when he purchased the PC so know it came from a legit source. Moreover, I have seen him successfully use it. The last recorded Windows updates are from July, 2015, when the PC ceased being used and a Win 7 sticker is still affixed to the case and the number is readable.

When I bring up the Windows Update site, I don't get an error code but do get a message telling me that 'system administrator' permission is required. So far as I know, there has only ever been one 'Administrator' user account account ever set up (and it still exists) and no password was involved, so far as I know.

As this may be a 'user' issue, how do I get to the 'super administrator' account and how do I get rid of any password that may have been established? Alternatively, would it be helpful to do a system reset to the date of the last update?

Otherwise, suggestions, advice, pointers to an appropriate tutorial, or anything else would be most appreciated as I would like to get this PC operating properly again

I bought a new computer with W7 and wanted to get the update to reserve my W10 copy but ran into the problem that the "checking for updates" screen never found anything and continued searching. I've googled the problem and have found dozens of solutions which I've tried all, many of them were from this very forum which is why I joined to see if I could be helped. The Fix it program did find problems but didn't fix it, when I go to CMD there are some commands I am not allowed to do even when I run as an administrator, Win Update doesn't run on Safe Mode even with networking on and whatnot. I've uninstalled McAffee and all the Lenovo bloatware on the computer which did seem to be affecting the performance. I even restored the computer to factory settings. The only thing I haven't done is let Windows Update run all night, I've only left it on for about 3 hours but I think that's enough. Here is the .zip file of my logs..

Is there anyway I can even manually install the updates? I mean all I really want is Windows 10 and I guess when I install that this problem would technically be fixed right?

any help would really be appreciated, thanks!

How do you check for updates after Windows Update fails to install an update (e.g., (KB3122947) - Error 0x80070643)? The only buttons that show up are Retry or Download, not Check for Updates which is usually there. I have automatic updates disabled (set to notify only) via Group Policy, by the way.

Two days ago I upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium, which initially seemed to go well. Then Windows would not update. It either stays stuck checking for updates or says Windows could not search for new updates, with error code 8024001b. I've checked that Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer services are running, deleted SoftwareDistribution Download and DataStore caches, and run Windows Troubleshooting FixIt program but they didn't help. Windows Update service is running continuously with high CPU usage.

I've run the SURT which completed. I then tried again to install Windows updates but no improvement. The SFC scan found no integrity violations. I've attached the CBS folder.

As said, when I boot the PC Action Center reports I need to change my update settings. This I do and change to auto download and install and click OK, on reboot this changes back to "Never Check for Updates (Not recommended)".

Don't know when this started but have recently updated Bitdefender TS 2014 to the latest 2015 version so am not sure if this could cause it. Checked the BD forum but cannot find anyone else reporting a similar problem.

Maybe a SFC or Registry problem? Hell, I know nothing!!

Is it normal to check one update box and two updates install ?
Windows update is set at:
"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" and
"Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important update" is unchecked.

The updates were:
Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB3162593) Marked important.
Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.223.2784.0) Marked optional.

I check the box for the Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update and clicked OK.
It said one optional update selected, install updates.
When clicked install updates it downloaded and installed the two updates.
I only wanted the Microsoft Security Essentials Definition to install.

Is this normal?

Thanks,

Answer:Is it normal to check one update box and two updates install ?

That does seem to be fairly normal behaviour. If you don't want to install an update when you are installing other updates you need to Right Click on that update & select Hide. Just unticking the box does not always stop the update & even if it does it will keep reappearing until you actually Hide it.

I have never posted on a forum before so apologies if I am doing this wrong. The problem started when I tried to plug in my (new) iphone to my Dell pc. The device was not detected so I tried to update my itunes software - update failed and I received a Windows 7 error. After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start

Answer:Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

Let's start with the easy stuff

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

The problem start with my wife's PC. It started a few weeks ago she told me. She can't open Outlook Express (doesn't start), access My Space or get updates at Windows Update. Also some images on sites do not load.

I then checked my PC and found, I couldn't access Windows Update, My Space, Thunderbird fails to retrieve emails. I have not noticed any issues with images.

Given this sounded like some of the behaviors I have heard of trojans doing I thought I would post my logs here and see if anyone sees anything out of place. Normally I wouldn't consider a cross contamination but about two weeks I temporarily set up a home network between our PCs to share a few files. The next day I disabled NetBIOS on my PC but as we are both behind a hardware firewall, I guessing if it happened it must have happened then.

Nothing jumps out at me but I wanted to get a second opinion.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello guys,

I don't know what I did, but nothing happens when I click on those two things in the search bar:

View image: wtf

I reinstalled Windows a few hours ago, and IIRC pressing those with the mouse lead somewhere. Now when I click on them, it does nothing. I have to type in "Settings", so I can click on the actual Windows App. Then I can navigate to those settings. IIRC those results were "clickable".

Can somebody help?

Thanks in advance!

If you like, here's a Windows Update shortcut to use for now until hopefully an update will sort it for you.

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

AMD Athlon ll X4 750K
AMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... Hi all,

Working on an older Dell laptop for a friend (1.8ghz single-core, 1.5GB RAM) and cannot seem to get Windows Update to work...it will take hours to "check for updates" and then find some. I select the ones I want, install them, it claims they are "successful" and that the computer requires a restart. I restart to find they fail as the computer is restarting and that they continue failing as the computer comes back up after reboot.

I then check for updates again and get the same issue. It seems to install one or two updates each time, but the rest seem to fail (I know this as the owner has dial-up [I know, right? 0_o] and upon this last failure cycle, I now see the Win10 "reserve your copy" panel under Windows Update which was never there before.)

I've tried a few things in a few other threads including installing the December Windows Update update patch manually and I am still getting this issue...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I have searched through many threads and I have been unable to find an answer.

My windows update is unable to check for updates, an whenever I manually check for updates, Install now shows up, once the installation process begins, a couple of minutes go by and windows returns to checking for updates, and I am right back to Check for updates for your computer.

I've checked the history, and so far KB948610 has failed 4 times, and KB953733 once in the past (windows apparently never tried again).

Has anybody have a clue how I can resolve this???

Hi All,

I get the message 'Windows can't check for updates' when I roll-over the Windows Updates icon in the notification area of my task bar. When I open up the Windows Updates window and tell it to update, it hangs indefinitely - I don't get an error message. Something similar happens with Windows Defender.

My computer is running very sluggishly and freezes regularly. Windows Updates has not updated since 4 Nov 2009, and Windows Defender has not updated since 19 Nov 2009. I am on Vista, and am running AVG, Avast, Malawarebytes and CC Cleaner. None of them have detected any infections.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Marcos

Ok recently I have been getting an error saying that windows can't check for updates, I have also been getting a Trojan by the name of 'win32/PSW.OnLineGames.OTG'. I believe I have fixed the trojan (Norton has recently learnt of it's existence and now blocks it, whereas Norton didn't have it in it's database before), however it did re-enter my system twice. Since it is a trojan associated with stealing 'World of Warcraft' account details, I assumed it had infected a file that was something to do with the game (probably an Add-on, these are made by third parties, however Blizzard does approve of using them in-game). Anyway I deleted those, and the virus hasn't been back, but I figured that could be because Norton has quarantined it.

It caught my attention though, because I was getting a virus and windows couldn't check for updates, and I have heard of instances before where the update facility has been tampered with the download viruses disguised as updates. When I click the 'Windows can't check..' bubble, and then try to check, a bar just scrolls across, I have left it for an hour and come back and it has made no progress.

I haven't checked for updates since I got rid of the Trojan for the third time, as even though I could get rid of it again, I don't want to risk it.
I could really use some help in this, for some more information:

- My vista copy is legitimate
- I have cleaned/repaired all registry files
- I have recently run a disc check
- All my temporary cac... Read more

As the topic name indicates, I get this message on the tray. When I click on it and run windows update it runs endlessly. I have Windows Vista SP2 32 bit. Please help.

Answer:Windows can't check for updates

vista lifecycle is almost over.6 more weeks. there are no more updates except for security fixes. try uninstalling in series newest to oldest recent updates. sp2 is a lock down update. its a system rewrite and clean up tool. if its not installed properly itll act up so you either dump it , reinstall or try drive cleanup, defrag, and chkdsk from restart, and sysfile checker from the cmd prompt to fix any errors. it will eventually start removing history and personal info in the background every time it runs the so called monthly malware program, lol, ive never seen it find anything. its an auditing program that scans for hardware changes and programs that one may have transfered from another cpu which is not aloud. 1 install, 1 copy for backup, any alterations its gonna wipe your drive.  "thats been my experience with it"

I have the little blue icon with the gold circle at the bottom of the screen which usually signifies updates being downloaded or ready to be installed.

At the moment this is saying "Windows can't check for updates".

When I click it and check for updates I get an error message code 80070426.

I have searched on line and one suggestion was to go to services, select Software Licensing and select Start. (The service status is stopped).

When I do this I get another Error message - Error 0x004e002: 0x004e002.

Some suggestions for this error are to download a registry fixing tool. I have heard that can be very dangerous if you don't know what your are doing like me.

I did try a System Restore back to the beginning of the month, that did produce a couple of updates but after they had been installed the problem came back.

I have no idea what all this means and am not a "techy" so any step by step help would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks for any help.

For some reason, my computer will not check for updates. It is set to automatically check for updates, but now I am getting the message windows can't check for updates.
The error code is:

I recently got rid of a nasty virus and think it may have changed some settings. I am sure I have removed the virus, as I have ran multiple scans using the following:
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012
Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
SUPER Anti-Spyware
Spyware Doctor
Spy-Bot Search and Destroy

Currently, I only have Kaspersky and Malwarebytes running on the computer, so I don't think they are compromising each other.

I have tried:
system restore (all available times)
Turning off real-time protection during updates
Uninstalling previous updates
Downloading in Safe Mode
Reset Internet Settings
Even created another user on computer (I read somewhere that might help)

Computer Information:
Vostro 1520
Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 2)
32-bit Operating System
Internet Explorer 9

This has been bugging me for a while and would really like to get it fixed. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

OS = Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
The computer became infected with the 'smart HDD' virus the evening of 4/6. This resulted in hidden files and icons disappearing, etc. I was able to recover from that by going into safe mode and running an updated version of 'Stinger'. After that I was able to update malwarebytes and run that. These removed hijack something and fake alert something. Another action I took to recover from that virus was to complete a system restore back to the morning of 4/6. There are a couple things that I think are left over remnants related to that virus infection. The one I am most concerned about is that I am unable to check for windows updates. I have used the "Windows Updates" link found in Control panel and I have also tried going to the website http://windowsupate.microsoft.com When I use the link in control panel I get error code 80070005 and when attempting to scan from the website I get error 0x800A0046. Working on my daughters Dell Latitude D610 laptop which hasn't been used in over a year. No virus protection on it (not sure what happened as I loaded AVG on it a few years ago). Went to download.cnet.com, clicked the download for AVG, but received the following message: Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Same thing happened when I tried to download Avast. Used my PC to download AVG onto flash drive and tried to load onto laptop in safe mode. Receive the following mesg: Error code 0xC0070643. Installing 3rd party redistributables failed. Ran: TDSSKiller, RKill, and SuperAntispyware but still unable to run an AV program. Thought since Windows hadn't been updated in over a year, maybe that was the issue. Opened IE8 and keep getting the following: Welcome to IE8 Splash screen, Window advising browser has been upgraded, pop up window stating: A program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider setting for Internet Explorer. IE has reset this setting to your original search provider.., Information bar states current security settings put computer at risk clicking, Fix Settings for Me does not solve anything. Going to Microsoft Update page receive the following mesg: Install the ActiveX control required to view the website. The Information bar only references the Security issue, nothing about installing ActiveX. Was going to Uninstall/Reinstall IE 8, but w... Read more

Answer:Unable to Check for Windows Updates

AVG problem, see http://forums.avg.com/us-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=215876 .

I'd simply use a different AV, Avast Free and Avire Free and MSE come to mind.

Installing an activeX control at Windows Update...is standard procedure.

When I cick on update and security then update history it just flashes and nothing. Any solutions to this this issue would be most grateful.

Answer:Cannot check windows updates history.

Well if SoftwareDistribution folder was corrupted, this might be the cause.

Check component's store corruption, run CMD as admin and copy:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If it reports errors, run:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

If it says, no components store corruption, run:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

and it would not hurt to run disk cleanup:

cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

Additionally cleaning SoftwareDistribution's Download folder only:

net stop bits /y
net stop cryptSvc /y
net stop UsoSvc /y
net stop winmgmt /y
winmgmt /salvagerepository
taskkill /im TiWorker.exe /f
net stop wuauserv /y
rmdir "%systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download" /s /q
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat"
del "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr1.dat"

Let me start this by saying that I have about 12 Lenovo ThinkPads of varying types. I have installed Windows 7 (32Bit 64Bit Home Pro and Ultimate.) Now these machines may be considered by most folks as "Legacy Models." In truth, they are
indeed older models. I delight in refurbishing them and giving them away to family members while honing my skills by working on these machines. My problem is this. None of them will update. They all get stuck in the "checking for updates" mode
endlessly and will not issue a single update. I have tried many things in an attempt to remedy this problem. Frankly, I am at wits end and do not have an answer.  That, having been said, I refuse to be beaten by these machines. So, I come to
this community, hat in hands as it were, and ask whether or not there is an answer out there amongst you cyber geniuses to my current dilemna. Any takers? I wondered if whether or not there was a fix to be had @ Lenovo Support, either I am not looking at the
right places for answers from them or their community simply does not know.. Please, someone, help an old feller out why don'tcha?

When I try to run the Window Update feature it only results in error code 8007370A. Trying to follow the microsoft troubleshooting guide was fruitless as I could not solve the problem. After countless attempts I found your website and I'm now using it and I would greatly appreciate any help that you could provide. So, following your 'Update Posting instructions', I have installed the SURT on my desktop, run the SFC SCAN as admin which also failed (?Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation?), and attached the CBS.zip file from step 4 to this posting. (I think)

Hi Guys,

I found this forum today after trying to fix a problem with some malware. My machine had the zeroaccess trojan (possibly amongst others) which I think I've managed to get rid of.

The software I usually run is TDSS Killer, Malware Bytes, Spybot, Perlovga PRT and SuperAntiSpyware, and this usually does the job.

After this though, I noticed that Windows Updates wouldn't run and was missing from the Services.

I found this post on here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=264176 and have followed it down to making the FRST log (attached).

Windows updates is working now but I wondered if someone could have a look over the log and check there is nothing else suspicious lurking.

Also, there seems to be a small abnormality with my machine in that whenever I restart, it doesn't remember how my desktop icons were laid out and puts them back to how they were when I had the machine in safe mode.

Could someone have a look for me when you get a minute please.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers,

Stu

Answer:Would like a check after restoring Windows Updates

Welcome to MajorGeeks, Stu
You are still somewhat infected. I recommend going through the Read and Run Me First - Malware Removal Guide thread after you complete the below:

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Attached is fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST.exe on your flash drive.

Now re-enter System Recovery Options.
Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (How to attach)

Now attempt to boot normally.
