Windows Update makes problem worse

Question: Windows Update makes problem worse

1. My Vista Ultimate 64 had a problem 2 days ago with a driver for a USB drive.
That caused a BSOD.
2. I restarted to be prompted with the "an unauthorized change.." activation prompt.
I Activated
3. Upon reactivation it seemed to completely rebuild my user profile.
Then I could not see any programs in the start menu history areas either the programs or the files. Also I was unable to unlock the task bar or make any other changes that were user preferences.
4. I found registry fixes in the forums but could not do them since my registry did not appear to match.
5. Windows update wanted to fix my problem, so I ran it.
BSOD

Now my machine will not start in any mode.

It was SP1.
Can I run recovery from the original disk?
or Does anyone have any better suggestions?

Preferred Solution: Windows Update makes problem worse

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Sorry if this is too long...Starting Problem:
xp Home has been slowing down for about 6 months. IE pages would close line by line, and there was always a slight sound delay. Thought I could help myself - Here's what Ive done and the results ( all suggested by forums):
1. Downloaded Drivermax to update drivers. Before I could finish updating I lost my Wintv2000. Had to start undoing to get it back. I know this screwed up other stuff too.
2. Did all windows updates. This gave me the res:\\ieframe.dll error. Could not access my connected internet. After so much fiddling and changing settings, I decided to do a system restore.
3. Did a system restore ( after learning thru all this that it wasnt even turned on!?!) On reboot it said it "could not load personal profile" , so I lost all saved data. Undid the restore back to where I was.
4. Now the error changed to res:\\ieframe.dll\dnserrordiagoff. Started undoing the windows updates til I found it - for me it was KB960714. Now I dont know which updates to do.
5. Lost Google toolbar during this. Twice it asked to repair, but it still does not work.
6. Ran CCleaner ( ok - shoot me now). Did do a backup. Cleaned everyting except tv entries. Im sure this has mucked this further, yes?

monitor goes black after random periods of time. On reboot it does chkdsk. Computer still slow. Systray icons load in different order every day.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Actually none of this really sounds like malware problems. Yes you could have malware, but the problems you are mentioned do not sound like malware. Sounds like you problems within your Windows OS.

Attach the logs requested in the READ & RUN ME. Yes ComboFix too. Check to see if MBAM made a log. If not, just skip it for now.

So I bought my HP 15-r124nv one year ago. I liked the specs, they are good for creating music using daws. So i first bought my laptop, then my studio monitiors, after that my modular synth and finally my usb audio interface (steinberg ur22). Sound using asio shold be higher quality. With my laptop, asio is a lot worse than realtek hd audio driver. Sounds worse from the audio interface than the realtek driver.. This is rediculus. I saw a lot of posts about this, most of them used an hp laptop, but none of the other posts actually helped me fix the problem. This is really imporant i've tried everything nothing works. I need an expert from either the hp support team or someone who had and fixed this problem to let me know how to fix this.  Tests i did:I tried a different audio interface to see if it is the ur22 problem.. Sound sounds crappy from other interface tootested my ur22 on a different pc with the yamaha asio driver. Sounds perfect.Turned all of power saving settings in my laptop off. Problem remains. (The sound with asio drivers in my laptop sounds like the sound is being through a heavy compression, but when i export the track, it sounds good and clean from another computer).Any help would be appreciated thansk in advance.

I have a Gateway sx2840-01 running Windows 7. It has a Core i3 530 cpu, 6Gb of RAM and a 1 Tb hard drive. I'm using Norton Internet Security 2010. On Friday we set up a second computer running Windows 7 and established a homegroup. The new computer is an HP HPE-400z with an Athlon II X4 635 cpu 6Gb of RAM and a 1Tb hard drive. When we set up the new computer we removed an old Dell that had been on a workgroup with the Gateway. These are the only recent changes to the operating environment I can think of. I'm having three problems that seem to have arisen simultaneously:  I can't run Internet Explorer with Flash Player installed, I can't download and install either Chrome or Firefox, and System Restore either fails or introduces new problems.I wish I had made  notes of my attempts to fix the problem, I'll make as complete an accounting as my memory allows.I first encountered the problem with Internet Explorer, when I tried to start it it froze and I got an error message to the effect that Adobe Flash Player Installer/Uninstaller 10.1 r102 had stopped working. I uninstalled Flash Player and Internet Explorer started normally, when I reinstalled Flash Player the problem recurred. At this point I decided to switch to Chrome, but Chrome was behaving oddly too, specifically I couldn't make any edits to my bookmarks. I decided to uninstall and reinstall Chrome. Chrome would not reinstall. I attempted to install Firefox, same problem. In both c... Read more

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Jeremy

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

Not sure if this should be under a Windows area so it can be moved if I'm in the wrong here, but it's a driver problem and the word driver stuck out in this forum's description.

Last night I went to Windows Update. There were about four updates and the maliscious (sp?) tool remover thing. I updated with all of them and restarted as usual. Later afterwards, I go to head into my video driver options (nVidia, with the tab among the other "advanced display" options). The tab is completely gone. Great, so now what? I usually need to alter AA and AF settings betweens games and sometimes overclocking. There's the desktop manager but I still want this fixed (overclocking can only be accessed through the now gone tab anyway). I try uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, but nothing. One of the updates addressed a DirectX9 issue or something so I'm almost certain this is the cause. The info on it (per Microsoft's website) says it can be removed, but it's one of the updates that has NO remove button. I also can't access these driver options via the tab that brings up from the nView options, so it's completely inaccessible. Does anyone have any ideas? I have System Restore turned off unfortunately. A reformat is NOT what I want to do since I just did about a week and a half ago. Anyone else with nVidia drivers update this patch and see anything? Any ideas? Is rolling back to DirectX 8 and reinstalling DirectX 9 without this update p... Read more

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this posting.

A while back, I upgraded my father's Sony Vaio PC (model VCG-RB44G) to Windows XP Professional (from Windows Media Edition). This required me to take the computer to my place in order to work on it.

Since my father took it back to his place, he has been having off-and-on problems with the performance of his PC. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it is slow to boot up, runs slowly for a short period of time and then works fine again, and sometimes it even crashes. There is also on occasion a strange chirping noise that sounds almost musical that is intermittent (which during this time the performance of the computer grinds to a halt).

Can anyone tell me if I am looking at a Windows XP problem or is it something with the hardware?

Hello,About two weeks ago I purchased Acer Aspire E5-575G-53VG. Everything worked well. After I installed Anniversary Update, touchpad(ELANTECH) became unusable. It lags and movement is somewhat sluggish. When I switch touchpad setting in BIOS from ADVANCED to BASIC, no problem. But then gestures don't work. I've also found, that if CPU is on load, touchpad works normally. I think it's because of drivers. I made a clean install of Windows, installed all drivers from support page, updated windows and nothing helped(only BASIC mode, but then I lost functionality).I've noticed that other people have this problem too. We should spread the word, so Acer finally updates drivers and/or BIOS.

Windows live essentials update won't let my computer restart. When I finally let the update install since it kept popping up as an important once it installed the computer lite up but froze and wouldn't start up. There was short white line like a curser on the top left of the screen . I had to play with restart and control alt delete to get the thing to start again it took a long time . Then I went to system restore from before the update and things worked and it started. Then it happened again when it automaticly updated the software same problem. I seen a few fixes online but none of them so far have helped.

How are you connecting to the printers and other devices? Do you leave everything on 24/7? Have you tried power cycling everything?

I had the same problem as you guys with my newly bougth Acer Aspire S5-371 and I fixed my problem with these steps:1. Installed the newest Elantech drivers2. installed the newest io drivers3. Disabled advanced I2c option in bios4. Updated Elantech drivers from windows update5. Enabled Elantech in "mouse and touchpad setting", advanced settings. (If it doesn't show up or you can't enable it, try to reboot)6. rebootNow, under "Mice and other pointing devices" in Device manager, it shows up as Elan Input Device instead of Elan I2c Filter Device. Hope this works out for you guys to!  It took me three days to fix this problem... Can't understand why we don't get any help from Acer.

Initially it was Edge not working properly, now it mostly crashes. Even the new "amazing" feature of tab previews doesn't work properly. Imagine, I moved back to Chrome after so many years of being a happy IE user. Cortana was a bit iffy with "Hey Cortana". Now she doesn't listen to what I say at all, even when I press the button. The notification center has its own mood. Often decides to hide until I restart for absolutely no reason at all. Same goes for the sound volume and other flyouts on the desktop.
In short, there is massive degradation of various major features with every new build. And since I post all the issues I find using the feedback app, I know it is not just me experiencing these things. This is disastrous.
So, is it just me or you experience similar issues yourself?

Answer:Is it just me or does Windows 10 get worse and worse with every new build?

One of my users is having a severe problem.

When automatic updates is enabled on this machine, the hard drive thrashes and makes the machine extremely slow. Slow as in clicks take around a minute to register. Disabling automatic updates corrects the problem. Has anyone else had this problem in Windows 7 and know of a fix?

So far, I have tried clearing the SoftwareDistribution folder to no effect.

Answer:Windows update service makes system extremely slow

Let me start off, I do not know the connection between the HD and updates, but I do know clicks and HD do not play well together. I would go to the website of the HD mfg. and take the HD test.

Model: 20CD0032US On Saturday I updated the BIOS on my ThinkPad Yoga S1 to the latest version, v1.24. Beginning on Sunday, I started getting numerous BSoD erros when booting Windows 8.1. Previously, this laptop has been absolutely ROCK SOLID for the year I've owned it. A few errors I recieved:Critical System Driver Contains Errorsfltmgr.sys0xc0000221 bfadi.sys0xc0000221 "Digital signature for this file couldn't be verified" (didnt' specifify a file)0xc0000428 ntoskrnl.exe0xc0000428 After trying all the usual MBR and file system command line tricks, I still couldn't get it to boot. I tried playing with the SecureBoot settings in BIOS to no avail. I finally reinstalled Windows 8.1 since I had nothing significant on this laptop. (I pretty much use it for basic Office and automotive diagnostics. My desktop is my primary PC.) That was Sunday. It all seemed fine except for one random BSoD due to some driver file. I didn't think much of it since I had installed dozens up Windows updates and updated drivers. I went to bed Sunday night with everything being fine. The laptop was unplugged for a few hours and when I went to boot it up I started getting the same random BSoD's as above. No matter what, I couldn't get Windows to boot. I finally did a Reset to OS Optimized Defaults in BIOS and it magically booted. Everything seemed fine. I walked away to get some dinner and the laptop went to sleep. When I tried to wake it up, the BSoD's started all o... Read more

Under the original build, the X200 works great (admittedly with 4GB RAM and an SSD hard drive). The November Windows 10 update completely changes that. It completely destroys any support of this device for Windows 10. The problem seems to lie somewhere with either the audio and/or video drivers, but fixing this would probably require Lenovo to actually do something and intervene, so I'm guessing anyone with the X200 (or similar Lenovo laptops with the same AV setup) are just screwed now.  The first thing you notice is that any Metro App with A/V output now runs at around 10% speed, with big chunky sputtering where you only see the video change every 2 seconds or so (and the audio sputtering). This happens pretty much with anything with moving graphics. The second is trying non-Metro AV intensive apps. They seem to run normally at first, but lock up the PC pretty consistently.  YouTube video playbacks in a web browser for example.  The video and even audio starts out normal fo a few seconds, then the PC freezes.  The general interface/usability of the OS mostly seems normal around that. Keep in mind that other than (under Metro App) the audio occasionally dying and being quickly fixable, none of this happened before the November update. Metro apps ran great.  AV playback everywhere was full speed, no sputtering or hesitation at all. And none of it locked/froze Windows. The audio on this model is Conexant 20561 Sm... Read more

Answer:X200 - Windows 10 November Update makes it totally unusable

Okay, I have proof it's the Conexant causing this, athough what I did to address this is disturbing and I think dangerously unstable as a long-term solution. And I don't know WHY it worked. In the Device Manager in Win10, under "Audio Inputs and Outputs" there are two mentions of the Conexant 20561. Internal Microphone (no idea if it works--I haven't tried it yet) and Speakers. Under the properties for Speakers, in the Driver Tab, it says the driver is from Diver provider Microsoft, date 10/29/2015, driver version 10.0.10586.0.  So clearly not the version Lenovo has on their site (which wasn't great, because it died a lot, but never slowed down or locked the system). Just on a hunch I disabled the Speaker driver from Device Manager. Then something very unexpected happened. All the problems went away. ALL of them. But despite Device Manager reporting the driver as disabled, I'm still getting audio out of the speakers. Still have a working volume control.  There's no sputtering.  AV works just fine both in Metro and in streaming HTML5 Youtube windows.  It's like nothing bad ever happened... I rebooted, verified that the seeming disablement inside Device Manager sticks (visually at least), but that the actual audio still works after a reboot. This seems like a house of cards waiting to fall though. It makes no sense that disabling the device leaves it still working (better than ever) and I have to think that at some point so... Read more

New AGP Card makes Windows hang on startup - VGA problem?

Hi folks. After much pain trying to get my new graphics card working I sent it back thinking it was bust. My lovely new (different model) one arrived today and yes, the same problem happens - argh!

Card is AGP. I remove all Nvidia drivers using Remove Programs. Also I use driver cleaner to make sure all Nvidia drivers are gone. Then turn off PC, insert the new card and reset. Windows XP Pro begins to boot up. During the loading screen it switches to VGA mode, and then does nothing for ever.

I've done plenty of rummaging to see whats wrong and drivers seem to be the most likely culprit. Can anyone explain to me the process of deleting drivers and keeping the correct ones. According to my card instruction manual, I should delete my current VGA driver before inserting the card. When I delete my Nvidia drivers does that include a VGA driver? Is there any way I can do a purge of all graphics related drivers?

In my bios its set to boot VGA from AGP. Seems like something is up with my VGA - can anyone help me narrow it down?

Thanks

PC Info:

MOtherboard - Asus P4S8X
New Graphics Card - V9999GT GForce 6800 128 mb DDR AGP
Old Graphics Card - GeForce Ti 4200 (still works when I plug it back in)

I was soooo looking forward to Windows 10 1703 because Microsoft claimed to have finally addressed the font scaling issues they've been having with HiDPI displays. And address it they did. Only that it has gotten much worse than before.
I have an external 4k display attached to my Thinkpad (primary screen) and have that set to 150% scaling. In addition, I use my laptop's internal display (secondary screen) at 100% scaling. With Windows 10 1607 applications were blurry either on one screen or the other, depending on the application and framework. For example, Office 2016 was always blurry on the secondary screen while GTK applications were always blurry on the primary screen. With Windows 10 1703 the behavior at large hasn't changed, and Office 2016 is still blurry on the secondary screen. Only that now in addition to being blurry the fonts are unreadable, because they're jagged and garbled. It's kinda like font antialiasing is somehow messed up and renders the fonts unreadable.
Any ideas how to fix this other than rolling back to 1607?

Answer:Font scaling got even worse with Creators Update

Here are two examples of what I mean. The first is Outlook 2007 (2016 has the exact same problem), the second is PuTTY:
Prior to the update the fonts were still blurry but they were't jagged at all, and much easier to read. As it is my eyes start to hurt after a while.

Where to start, I;m a computer novice but my computer has been getting pathetically slower and often now just freezes and won't do anything, have to switch off at mains and then re-start. Recently my spysweeper updated to a newer version and I have to keep it off or it's virtually at standstill. I had a problem with AVG (free version) and changed to Avast, also zone alarm, superantispyware and have sypbot search and destroy but it too is freezing and has a problem getting rid of ErrorKiller (even in safe mode). I have emptied temp folders defragged and everything I can think of to help to no avail.

Can anyone help me please in very simple non technical terms. Thank you for looking.

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

FAIR:
After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
BAD:
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

My room mates computer went through an update. It got the update and then when it restarts it goes to the update screen and goes to about 10% completed and then says that it cannot complete the update. It then "reverts" back and then restarts the computer over again. It then begins to scan and clean the D: drive and begins again the same process as before with the 10%, reversion, restart, and so on and so forth. I do not know what to do other than possibly have to remove his hard drive and somehow backing up his files and putting a new OP system on there...and I do not really know how to do that. Please, any help is welcome and very much needed!

Scratchin my head here...

updated a machine running W95 and MS Word97 that was a 266(or 233, I forget)mhz/32mb RAM to 64mb RAM and then did a CLEAN install of Windows 2k Pro that failed, so did a Clean install of Win98SE with MS Office 2k (well just Word and Excel) and now system is very unstable, BSD pops up several times daily supposedly. Being this was a clean install w/o errors and its only used for wordprocessing (not online at all), I highly doubt that a 266(or233)/64RAM machine would be underpowered. Could WORD 2000 be requiring more system power? I believe a 233 is minimum Windows98SE needs.

any thoughts? TIA

When I set the power option on my pc to have the monitor turn off after so many minutes it does not work. What I mean is that the monitor goes black for one second then comes back on. This problem just started a few days ago. I posted a thread on another forum and someone suggested I run msconfig and inspect the startup tab to see if there was something in there that might be causing the problem. I saw three things in there that I had uninstalled ... nero, incd, and sagetv. I cleared the checkboxes for those three then clicked okay. That is when things started going really bad. I immediately got an error message saying that I may need administrator privelages to make the changes. I am the admin on this computer, I have been since I installed XP. When I clicked okay on that box I was prompted to restart the computer which I did. When it rebooted I then got a message that said major hardware changes had taken place since the last time XP was started and that I had to reactivate XP. No hardware changes were made at all so this totally baffles me. I still can't make changes in msconfig and I am being reminded about every 5 minutes that I need to reactivate XP. I know this was a long winded post but I wanted to be sure and get as much info in there as I could. If you have any suggestions or questions I would love to hear them.

I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

Thanks,
-X

take the graphics card out and insert it back in firmly making sure it is sat properly in its slot. check the manufacturers websites for your motherboard and graphics card and see what the bios updates do, and see if they have any FAQ's to check if anyone else has been having similiar problems to you in terms of people who have the same motherboard or graphics card??

Email the manufacturer(s) for your motherboard company and graphics company.

i've had verizondsl for about half a year or so now, and from last month to present, the connection has been horrible.. sometimes it would just hang for up to a minute at a time, with the modem activity light blinking slowly (loss of connectivity).. before it started, speeds were decent, and although slow compared to the optimum cable i was used to, it was sufficient. now it's just pure garbage. if it weren't for the fact that we're getting free cable, i would immediately switch to roadrunner

i figure asking you guys is probly much more helpful than those scripted outsourced fools at tech support. i tried all that "reset your modem" "unplug the ethernet cord" "make sure you're computer is on" crap already and would like some REAL answers..

PS- at my old house, we used to have verizon as well, and after a while it just stopped all of a sudden and when we called to see what happened, they said since there was construction in the area, they must have switched our phone line over to one with a further CO, and we were now too far to service. verizon is teh gay.

Answer:verizondsl getting worse and worse speeds

Well try plugging the modem into the demark jack if you have one (by where the phone line comes into your house). See if this still happensl. If it doesn't maybe something happened to your internal phone lines. (this probalby won't be the issue I'm betting).

Beyond doing that phone your ISP and get them to file a support ticket or whatever they call it there. When I was having trouble with my DSL connection a couple years ago I phoned up, they sent a guy from the telephone company to test the line and they replaced a device at the CO and the connection has been perfect ever since.

I've been putting up with this issue for about a year now. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

Basically, whenever anything on my laptop puts the disk in heavy use, the whole OS becomes unresponsive until it's done.

The drive is a 750GB 5400rpm HDD, so I'm not expecting lightning speed. However, I don't think it's a hardware issue, and the reason is because the performance worsened significantly after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 last October. It's not triggered by any particular software; by watching the task manager when it happens, I can see the kinds of processes that cause it, such as:

- Windows Search Indexer
- Windows Modules Installer Worker
- Google Drive client (while scanning files)
- Antimalware Service Executable (Windows Defender, literally anytime something interacts with an EXE or creates a file)
- Google Chrome (while installing updates, downloading large files, or restoring cached data, e.g. an unused tab)

Even Explorer is frequently sluggish when trying to retrieve simple assets, such as my tray icons' context menus or Start Screen icons.

In all cases, whenever I sense Windows is struggling, I'll open Task Manager (which itself can take up to a minute to appear), and inevitably I will see that the disk use is "100%" (whatever that means) due to some combination of processes. Depending on the cause, it can last anywhere from a few seconds to 10-20 minutes. Once the disk usage falls below 100%, things sta... Read more

have you check if you have bad sectors on your hard drive? cuz it might be true that your HD is just dying off but if you are not sure you will be just wondering and the fact that you did recovery by setting everything to factory default means is either a virus or a hardware issue(most likely). I will suggest you check your hard drive diagnostics and your PS(which I hardly suspect)

Any ideas as to what would prevent the computer policy that applies to the domain computers on my network from allowing MU to work?

Let me say that the BITS service isn't started, and when trying to manually kickstart it, I receive this error message:

Code:

Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -2147467243.

Using the links provided at the troubleshooting section of MU gives me this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883822

I do the steps provided in the KB and I still cannot start BITS. Same cryptic ass error code received.

So then I do some magic with sc sdset for the Security Descriptor that BITS uses:

[SC] SetServiceObjectSecurity SUCCESS
This allows me to download updates but after a reboot it will not function again. I get the same BITS error and when I try to do the sc sdset BITS <string> it won't even set that, fails with an error code of 1336.

first off, im not the most computer illeterate but i know some stuff so plz bare with me.

i keep getting the blue screen of death probably about an hour into my computer startup. doesnt matter what im doing wether a game, net, chat, etc. i wish i could tell you what it says on the blue screen but it only flashes for about a second or two.

what i can remember are a bunch of zeros or numbers and the 'fatal error' at the bottom of the paragraph. then my computer restarts.

when my computer boots up, a voice comes on saying "System completed power-on self test, computer now booting from operating system". but now every once in a while it says "System failed memory test, computer now booting from operating system".

i know i had to delete a bunch of stuff off my C drive because i kept getting alerts that i had no space but even when i did delete programs, it didnt seem like it was making any room on the C drive.
I have Adware 6.0 and almost everytime i do a scan, the same files come up as infected and they're always .DLL files too. then i quarantine but when i scan the next day the same files come up as infected again.

thats all the info i can think of. somebody plz help because this started out with the blue screen about once a week and now its once every hour. HELP ME

Ok bear with me as I try to explain this.

-There was a power outage in my area and my computer restarted. After restarting it would hang at the Windows loading screen with the blue bar, and it would stay like that forever.

-I went into safe mode which works fine and tried a system restore to an earlier date, and still wouldn't load.

-Went back into safe mode and it said Restoration Complete. Ran msconfig to do a diagnostic boot...still no luck.

-Ran chkdsk /r using Recovery Console, said it fixed the errors but still hangs at the same screen. Ran Samsung HD utility and detected ECC errors.

-Tried to do a Repair Windows installation using an original Windows cd, so it was SP1 when I had SP2. I tried a Windows XP Pro SP2 cd but there was no repair option so I went to my original, which was Home.

-Through the install there was a few errors such as COM+, directdb.dll, inetcomm.dll,msoe.dll and wab32.dll. I clicked okay with all of them and installation completed fine.

-After restarting, loading would be REALLY slow, and actually wouldn't go past the wallpaper. I checked task manager and explorer.exe isn't even there.

-Went into safe mode, which was super slow as well, and same thing with the no icons. Ran safe mode with Command prompt and opened system restore, only to find no restore points.

I am now at a loss as to what I should do.
Any help guys?

Thanks

Using Windows7 and IE8 32-bit I am constantly finding that the program stops responding and I have restore the last sesion, or worse still start again. Happens on both my home PC and my office PC, so its not the PC at fault. For example, today, trying to post this discussion took 8/9 restarts.
Anyone else experiencing problems?

Answer:IE8 problem - is it getting worse

This issue may be caused by some 3rd party add-ons that you may have installed on both of your PC's. Try reseting the IE settings to disable add-ons:
Close any IE or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.
Open a new IE window.
Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset. When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the settings, click Close, and then click OK.
Close IE. (The changes will take effect the next time you open IE.)
After that, please open IE again to verify if the issue has been resloved.
If this doesn't help....
Can I suggest that you try another browser such as Firefox to see if the problem still occurs.
You could also try rolling back IE8 to a previous version.

Thanks in advance for your help and your valuable service to the community.

I picked up a nasty virus / malware recently and have tried to use McAfee and several Malware removers over the past 3 days to no avail. Everytime I seem to make progress something new emerges.

This started with the Antivirus 2009 Pro Malware taking over. It changed my file associations so I couldn't run any .exe's. It even removed the View Folder Options menu so that I couldn't re-associate the file extensions. Fortunately I was able to logon to the adminstrator logon and fix that issue.

I tried to do an XP repair but was unable to when the application couldn't recognize my administrator password even though I can log into the admin logon with that same password. I then ran Macfee, Spybot and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This seemed to clear up most of my problems although I noticed a prior issue of still having one or more iexplore.exe processes running even though I didn't have an IE browser open.

Sure enough the next day I suddenly was unable to connect to the internet.
I finally found your forum and started to follow your proceedures for cleaning.

I was unsuccessful in running several of the procedures. I have found that my DHCP Service will not start and gets the error "Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion". When I try to look at dependencies I get the error "Win32: Access id denied".

What OS are you running?
Did you try getting into safe mode and doing a system restore to before this started?
Did you try renaming the programs, running them in safe mode, or changing the .exe extension to .com?
Did you disable your AV and AS programs before running any of the scans?

more specifically, the one 'security update for windows media player 10 (KB911565)'.
after i installed that one, MOST of my movies played in black and white.
they play fine with VLC player but not with WMP10.
to get around it i have uninstalled the update but am wondering if anyone knows why this is happening?

Can anyone help? This is an unusual one. I was called to fix a pc that froze after about 2 mins of use and have narrowed the problem down to the fact that as soon as automatic updates kicks in (on automatic with delayed start) it monopolises the system making it unusable. I have turned off updates and the machine works fine but this is not a good long-term stategy!

I have used the Microsoft Fix-it tool which completely successfully and re-registered updates etc but it hasn't fixed the problem.

Machine has a decent enough spec to cope with all day to day tasks etc.

I've run every malware scan at my disposal - the system is clear.

Am I missing something?

Any advice appreciated.

If I install the Windows updare KB3024777 the system becomes unstable and no program will start.

I have had to disable Windows Update for that, but I will be unable to update my Windows 7.

Any solution?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Update KB3024777 makes system unstable

The ONLY reason to install KB3024777 is if you already have KB3004934 installed - it is a patch specifillay to repair any damage that may have been done by that update.
If you haven't installed KB3004934 (Check your Update History) then this should not be installed (and I thought that MS blocked the install anyhow by making 3004934 a pre-requisite)

Hi,

Welcome to TSF.

Before we begin, can you tell us how antiwpa.dll got onto your computer? It is a crack software to bypass copy protection for Windows.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/star...dll-21379.html

========================

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

As of a couple days ago, not only would it take multiple restarts before POST would begin, but it then began to sometimes hang at the end of POST or when XP would first announce that it was starting.  In all cases, once the POST and then the XP boot were complete, the system worked properly from then on - until I had to fire it up again the next day (ca... Well, I am assuming it is all put together correctly. I can't see it and you can. With the power supply being replaced, the motherboard is the next suspect, but first:Remove ALL of the add in cards, the oprical drives and all hard drives. Just the motherboard, CPU w/heatsink/fan, 1 stick RAM and video card (if no onboard video) and see if can boot from a floppy. (www.bootdisk.com if you need one)If that works add one hard drive and recheck. Then add one thing at a time and see when the system fails. Give each "build" a reasonable length of time to assess functionality (an hour or so at each stage). If that doesn't work (gulp) it might be time for other replacements.  :-/The RAM can be tested with a free download at www.memtest86.com  Run each stick for an hour at a time or so, and then all together.Free hard drive diagnostics can be downloaded (for a bootable floppy) at the appropriate drive maker's web site.

My mother-in-laws computer has the Smitfraud virus. It had no Anti-virus protection at all at the time.

I, unfortunately, immediately loaded and ran McAfee from AOL. After the scan was complete, it reported deleting several files. It also requested quarantining a file, which I did. I then restarted to see if the (I now know) ubiquitous Smitfraud background went away.

Not only did the background not go away, the desktop icons and task bar were gone! Several restarts: no change. Safe mode: no change. The system is running to the extent that ctrl/alt/del works and allows me to bring up Task Manager. From that I can run AOL, Word, and some other things. However, I have no Start button to access control panel to add/remove programs as the Smitfraud instructions indicate.

So, should I perform the Smitfraud removal instructions that I can without the control panel? I should be able to do everything except add/remove programs.

Or what? Any guidance would be great.

Thanks!

i have been having some problem while running windows on my computer.

i will be sat there quite happily listing to music while chatting to people over msn and the music will suddenly stop, it will say its still playing and the little visilisation thing in the bottem right hand side of media player kinda styays where it is and moves contntly a tiny bit,
once this has happened however i have NO sound on my computer at all, not even system noises,

this makes no sence to me, i thought at first it was codec problems (fd show) but why would that have any control over any other sound on the computer,

normally i just restart it and its fine for a while when it will do it again,
except this "while" has become dramatically smaller,

i am vvveerrry confused,

just another note i am using a gigbit ga-7vt600 i think with an athlon xp,
not using defualt sound (i thought it was due to the fact i have two sounds cards in there plus the on-board, but i disabled the on bored and it made no differnce,
the sound card is aureal audio au 8830 vortex, with another creative genric soundcard just for djing, the vortex card is connected to my speakers via a surround sound system via and optical output,

i tryed changing the defuat sound card after it happens and seeing if it works but it stilll dosent

can you help me?

I'm having a really tough time trying to get rid of a Trojan (I think that's what it is). At first my Kaspersky found a trojan that wanted to load from a website, which I blocked when asked if that is the action I wanted to take. This was last night. I blocked it, but soon afterward found that Internet Explorer would load automatically without any toolbars, and most importantly--> automatically. I use Foxfire so IE shouldn't be opening. It would load to an ad site (without toolbars or anything). I looked at Kaspersky's report to see if what I had blocked previously was doing this, and found this entry --> rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\system32\kiherana.dll and also two other entries, identical except for the dll part which were fugisode.dll and yawafuku.dll. I went to my windows\system32 file and renamed the dll's to see what would happen. IE stopped loading as often but would still come up. So I went to the registry to see what was going on (Kaspersky had written out the registry key as well). Here's were it gets interesting (so to speak).

I found rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\kihevana.dll",b
rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\fugisode.dll",a
and rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\yawafuku.dll",s in the HKLM Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVerion\Run section of the registry.

I could easily delete the first... Read more

My problem started Sunday when I kept getting the screen which gives you the "Safe Mode" option, but no matter what I clicked I kept getting the "Safe Mode" screen. I called tech support and after I followed his suggestions I got a screen that said " Load needed DLLs for kernel" etc. The tech guy said I'd have to reinstall and would probably lose everything.
Monday I went and googled the error message to see if I could find more options, and which brought me to this forum. I followed the directions for the guide to reinstalling windows, however it set up a new Windows directory on my H drive (Before it was on my C drive).

1. Are my files still on my computer or did I screw up and erase everything? If my files are still on my computer how can I access them?
2. When I start my computer I get a menu giving me a choice of several Windows systems to choose from, one will get me to the new installation the other choices I will still get the same error message.
3. I could not find the Windows CD that came with my PC so I used a Windows XP professional edition that I had on my last computer. The PC I have now has XP home edition. Would this cause a problem?

Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

This is my Windows computer that the wife uses, so to prevent any more earache I need a cure. The computer is running XP Home.Specs as follows:AMD 64 X2 3800Asus A8N Sli mobo2 x 1gb Crucial 3200 DDR2 X 80gb Maxter SATA drivesSeasonic S12 600 watt PSU2 x 7600 GT Nvidia graphics cards.HP lightscibe DVD/RW, Sony CD/RW / DVD Rom.I am not sure where to post this as i am not sure if it is a software or hardware problem. This has been happening for about 6 months now.Basically on rare occasions it will go through POST successfully, then the screen comes up with the moving bar, then after the bar has made about five full passes the screen goes blank.Normally pressing the reset button will cure it and it boots OK.I have posted about this problem before when it would not boot into windows at all and I got round it by doing an Acronis restore, I have just tried that again and Acronis will not pick up my external hard drive to restore from.Eventually after about 25 reboots I managed to get into Windows and had a look in the event viewer and the only error I could see was this. The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load atapi PCIIde.Can anyone help as this has me really frustrated, I do not now where to start looking.I have stripped it back to the bare essentials and no problems, then added different components and it ran with no problems for a while and now it is back with the intermittent problem and it has just taken me 25 reboots to get it to work.

Answer:Intermittent problem getting worse.

Hi, afraid I cannot provide any cure, except to say that I had a very similar problem requiring multiple reboots to get going - it turned out eventually to be a mobo problem, got new mobo, have had no problems since. This was all about 18 months ago.Good luck.

Hi, I have been having problems with adwares and whatever on my machine that I cannot remove, no matter what I have tried. I have tried AVG Antispyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware 2007 and a fix I downloaded from Symantec's website. The problem is that I keep getting false spyware prevention programs opening IE7 and popping up at random. Every single time I have tried to deal with this, I have found a program called VirtuMonde, and no matter what I do, even in safe mode, it still turns up all the time. My last resort was to try a hijackthis log, but I can make no sense of it. I wondered if anyone could help me?

I actually had this issue and wanted to let other Firefox users aware before it happens or if it already happened.

If you have the Launchy extension on your Firefox browser and it tries to update from version 4.0.0 to 4.1.0, it will cause Firefox to become unusable. You cannot update Launchy via Firefox updater, you must first uninstall Launchy 4.0.0 and then go to the author's website and download and install Launchy 4.1.0.

You can read more about this issue and how to solve it here:

The problem stops after I unplug my modem or get to task manager if it loads

Okay, I visited a site I have been to many times before dating back a couple of years. The site now has many ads and such now. When on a page recently something was trying to load the url "http://zlzu.ru/doriu/pdf.php?f=all" unexpectedly. This caused my browser to go wild and the resources being used in Task Manager went up to the 280k range for Firefox alone. The pdf continued to try to load and everything froze until I unplugged my modem. Then after pressing CTRL+ALt+DLT I got a "failed to something security options" message (not sure exactly). I then pressed again and my task manager came up.

I was able to close the tab which this unauthorized "pdf" was trying to load in afterwards. I shut everything down did scans, cleared browser cookies etc., defragmented. YOU NAME IT I did the basics and everything came back clean. Then I went back to this site to report the issue. Everything was fine until I tried to access a certain thread again. All of a SUDDEN it happened except faster this time. The same url tried to load a PDF into my browser by ... Read more

My T400 gets shut down from time to time so I decided to clean it before my big project comes. So I got the fan out following the maintainance manual and blowed it dry with a duster. However, after I put all the parts back together, it got worse: It cannot even run over 5 min using the adapter. When I use the battery, the CPU temperature is around 60 C. The CPU usage reaches to 100% and as I checked the progresses in task manager I don't see anything big running. Its my first time opening a laptop so I think I might did someting wrong when i assemble or disassemble it. Anybody can help me figure out where the problem can possibly is?

Answer:Overheating problem gets worse after I cleaned my fan

Hi happysilvia, and welcome,

Did you only remove the fan, or did you also remove the heatsink assembly from the CPU?  If you disturbed the heatsink to CPU contact, did you clean it and apply thermal compound?  If you disturbed the CPU to heatsink assembly connection without reapplying compound, that might explain your issues.

Others may/will have better suggestions, but I don't remove a fan to clean it.

Hi Guys,
I recently had major problems with OE6, and with some help managed to back it up and get it up and running again.

The only problem is I have this folder sitting on my Desktop with all my old mail in it (.dbx files) and I am unable to import it. When I use the import function I just get an error 'No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open.'

Of course, there is no application & the folder does contain my .dbx files.

I read somewhere that I simply have to copy and paste these .dbx files, but I have done that - pasting them into what I think is the OE message folder but this does not work.

-UPDATE-
Now I have been playing around with OE6, created a new identity and that didn't work. Now when I open Outlook Express most of my mails that were in there and working, have now disappeared BUT the .dbx files for these folders still exists in the Store Folder!!

Please can anyone help - this is driving me crazy!!!

Thanks in advance,

Gregg

I don't even know where to begin with this. I've never been defeated so horribly. I cannot make any sense of this problem. I'm having the problems on the system shown below. Beginning about six months ago I started having these problems.
I would get blue screens once inawhile and there would be different error messages every time. Finally the o.s. hard drive started making a horrible buzzing and so I swapped it out for a different one. Alright... things seem to be going alright.
I leave my computer on for a week or so and there's no problems...until something causes me to have to restart. Half the time the drives aren't recogonized upon boot-up and if they are windows freezes mid boot. Usually after an hour of tinkering.. reorganizing the drives, shouting profanities and putting my fist through a wall it will reboot again.. until another week goes by and the same process repeats itself.
Now the o.s. drive I swapped out before is making excessive clicking sounds when booting. So I think maybe this one is bad.. just like the last one was bad.. I'm really burning through the drives here.. but that's alright, i've got drives laying all over. So today I pull out my seagate drive that i bought new a month ago. Naturally my motherboard doesnt recogonize the seagate...but in only 1 configuration... three drives have to be hooked up including the clicky one with the o.s. on it now and the jumper settings have to... Answer:6 months and I've only made the problem worse.

You bought a new seagate ....have you tried removing all the other drives (hard) and booting up with the seagate setup utility ...then try install os in it?

Have you run Everest on it to look at what it reports or run memtest?
Everest:

Memtest

What is the exact error code on the BSOD?

How are all your three drives hooked up? Assuming master on last primary IDE/ slave on middle connection and....third on the secondary IDE along with the cd rom?

Have you run a disk check on the master?

I am a nongeek in need of Major Geek Help!

It all startrd yesterday when my IE would not open. I would receive the message:
"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I contacted Dell support and we uninstalled & reinstalled IE. It did not help.

I have a home network, so I downloaded the latest IE 6.0 from MS on a different pc and shipped it to the troubled machine. After install, I had the same problem.

I then shipped Netscape over to the troubled machine and loaded. I got it to work but did not set it as my default browser.

Through NS, I purchased, dnld, and instlld Nortan Internet Security2004 Professional. I also downloaded Earthlink's TotalAccess 2004.

Norton found a Trojan Horse in a file madise.dll and recommended I quarantine it.

It did not solve the problem.

I decided to remove TA2004 and when I rebooted, I get the following message after getting into my user account:

"TaskPanl.exe - Unable to locate component......The application has failed to start because E60Cmmon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem".

After clicking OK, OK, I then get:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library....Run Time Error!..... Program:C:\Windows\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe............
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

Clicking the OK button will not make the message go away.

So earlier today, my laptop started acting up. My windows updates were disabled, and my desktop changed to a black screen with red letters saying my laptop was infected, with a bunch of extra text. So I ran MBAM and it detected 23 items. Most were removed and I haven't had that black screen occur again. But every time I've run it after that, 3 files always come up:

Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Value (under Other category: Value wuradoreva)
Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Key
Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Key

Every time I run MBAM, these 3 always appear. Even after I've clicked "removed selected."

On top of that, I've also had a problem with google redirecting. :/

Hello,

I recently had some sort of virus/malware attack my laptop which meant I was unable to access the internet. Its not a problem with the wireless as far as i'm aware as other people have been able to connect. The windows connection diagnostics said there was a winsock catalog error but sometimes it gives me different messages.

I attempted to try and fix it, firstly by running norton goback and then attempting to use DrWeb but think I've made it alot worse (did that before reading the first 'DO NOT FIX YOURSELF' page on the forum - schoolboy error).
A few virusy type things that have come up in the scan are 'trojan.swizzor' and 'adware.xbarre' and 'tool.killproc.3' - Think they are quarantined but not entirerly sure. i have the scan results saved if you require them at a later date.
i'm writing this from another pc as the laptop cannot connect to the internet.

Here are the reports of the scans as requested:

Am I the only one facing this issue or all the people out there in this build facing similar issue.
Desperately need another update very sooner.

Sorry in advance if this has come up hundreds of times before, The computer could turn off at any minute for all I know (It has blue lines all over and the resolution is really out) :/

So the problem is, I started getting a message which read: Hard Disc S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD backup and replace; It allowed you to press F1 in order to start the computer normally which has been fine for about a week or so, (I'm really stupid for ignoring this warning I know).

I restarted the computer when it froze and then it froze again...but this time it blue screened saying the file nv4_disp is causing the problem, to which I have no idea what this file is.

I left it for an hour and it has come back on, I started it up in normal mode and the blue lines and the bad resolution as mentioned above are here but I am obviously able to access the internet fine.

Hope this helps you lot to work out what is wrong (hope it isn't too hard to fix)
Thanks, James.

It is telling you that the HDD is about to fail and to back up the data on the drive as soon as possible, because you are going to have a failure any minute. You will need to purchase a new HDD and reinstall everything.

Let's keep this simple. I bought spore. My comp isn't old but just doesn't have great specs. It still played the game but a bare minimum graphics, which I'm fine with. Then I find out that there's an update for my graphics card's driver. I install said driver. Now the game won't last two minutes without crashing... Anyone know why the updated version of my driver is worse than the old version?

My graphics card for reference: Intel® 82852/82855 Graphics Controller family (Intel® 852/855 Chipset family)

For whatever reason spore ignored the fact that my graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements and went ahead and played the game anyway. It worked for 3 days straight with no problems until I got the update. Also Dell tells me it is my driver that's causing the problem so I know this doesn't belong in the games section just because it involves spore.

Help?

Answer:Solved: I update my driver to play a game, instead it makes it crash...

Have you uninstalled the new driver?

Have you done a system restore to a data before you installed the driver?

If you are just asking why an updated driver causes a problem when an old one does not, that is often the way it is. When an updated driver is released, it is done to correct problems, support new hardware, etc. When these fixes are implemented to the driver files, they often cause problems with older hardware, games, etc, etc.

Hi,

So I started doing "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" on my desktop (XP) a few weeks ago and it was a success. The problem was browser redirects. Lately the same problem has plagued my laptop (Vista) to such a degree that is it unbearable, so, with previous success in mind, I used the same method on my laptop. Now the browser redirect problem seems to be gone, but somehow I've gotten something worse now.

Now I'm getting what seems to be one of the symptoms of Vundo (it had been detected in the past and removed, according to one of the scanner specified in the Read and Run Me First). I have no problem other than a constantly crash and restarting Windows Explorer. That seems to be the only problem I'm having (aside from a blue screen of death 0x0000007e usbhub.sys problem on shutdown/hibernation, which occurred months before and should be unrelated). I can still access my files in very limited capacity, using task manager's new task button (which brings up an explorer-like menu for you to choose which task to start) to copy/cut/run whatever.

Now, here's what I did (that were out of the ordinary, compared to the instructions).

I had to repeatedly run Malwarebyte and Superantispyware a couple times, because I have a 140GB drive which required the scanners to take a while, and a lot of times they're not done by the time I have to leave the house and need to cancel the scan to bring it with me to do some other work late... 1. You have the combofix beta running from the wrong location. We request always that combofix be run directly from the desktop.

You have it running from:
c:\users\Will\Downloads\KittyFix.exe

You need to move it to the desktop now before we continue.

2. Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.

Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

3. TIDY this desktop:

C:\Users\Will\Desktop

4. Is all the below related to programming?

C:\PRO4.EXE
C:\PROG4.EXE
C:\PROG5.EXE
C:\PROG3.EXE
C:\PROG2.EXE
C:\PROG1.EXE
C:\PROG2.MAP
C:\PROG2.OBJClick to expand...

Plus many more similar files.

5. Now we need to use ComboFix

Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.

Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it... Read more

Hello. I've browsed these forums before after needing help, but this is my first post. As you will be able to tell, I'm not that technically minded, so forgive me please if this question seems obvious to you. I'd sure appreciate any help.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M60 which is just over 2 years old. I've noticed recently that the battery life was getting very poor; it was running at little under 30 minutes if I was watching a DVD, for example.

Last week, the laptop would not turn on. It tried to get started, but then just cut out before powering up. I tried a few things, including taking the battery out, putting it back in and then starting again, and it then did start just fine. However, it would only start with the mains electricity not connected; only on battery alone. I am still starting the laptop like this, and the problem is still the same. To start my laptop, I have to remove my battery, put it back in, start up, and then when it has powered up, I put the mains power in. If I do this before, it won't start.

Do you think this is likely to be just the battery that needs replacing, or is the problem more severe? I am no longer under guarantee, so don't want to pay for a service if a replacement battery would solve the problem, but similarly I don't want to pay for a battery only to find that doesn't work, and the have to pay for a service as well.

I hope you can help. It will be much appreciated.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite M60 problem. Battery or worse?

You didn't say if it worked the other way around
Power in , Battery always out

If it works like that, then it's likely battery
If it doesn't then it's likely onboard power converter (that one may be tricky!)

By the way, when removing both power sources, you should hold down the power button for 30 secs, dispersing all internal voltage (this may also fix it)

I have tried to solve this problem by re installing Firefox and trying Chrome as well as IE.  I continually get the notice from whichever browser i use that it cannot find the web site.  It takes many tries before i am able to access the site.  I have scanned with Malwarebytes, SUPERantispyware and Avast and nothing unusual is found. It seems to be worse daily and is now starting to send me crazy!  It will even give me the same message when moving from one section of a site to another.

Thanking you for any help offered.  Regards.  JH

Answer:Firefox can't find the web site...this problem is getting worse.

Sounds like it could be a damaged winsock file or dns issues.

Please try:
1. Open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the search box upon clicking the start orb.
2. When cmd.exe shows up on the list up top either right click it and choose "Run as Administrator" or press Ctrl + Shift and hit Enter.
3. Type netsh winsock reset
4. Let it reset the files and then restart your PC.

Also while doing that:

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

I have an Archer TP-Link AC 1750 PCI-E dual band wireless adapter (less than 2 years old) and it has always worked with Windows 10, until now.
I became aware of a potential problem with Insiders 16288 which was the first I installed that broke the wifi connection, and then and subsequent insider releases all had the dreaded yellow exclamation mark.
I have been to the TP-Link web page and I have downloaded the latest drivers for windows 10, for this card and others, but with no success.
I have uninstalled, removed the driver, reinstalled, tried windows update, tried the trouble shooter, tried various other TP-link drivers, and cannot find a driver that works.
It seems odd that a so called Windows Update can break something that has always worked.
Anybody got the same issue or any advice on a driver that may work?
I'm now stuck with an ethernet cable running across the floor.
I'm also reluctant to buy a new card as the one I'm using is "Windows 10 Compatible" but that was until yesterday.

Hey. I just want to share my experience with bios update on my hp 8710w laptop and talking to HP support. I updated from F.0E to F.20 and after that fan has gone wild. Under windows 7 it works fine every 2 out of 3 boots, or so. Every other time fan spins fast no matter what the temperature and system load are. This makes the laptop noisy. I normally use linux, and there fan just doesn't slow down after spinning up to cool the system. This is really something you won't want to have, because it turns an excellent and quiet machine into a loud vacuum cleaner. I have enough evidence to assume that the issue was caused by bios update. First it started exactly after bios update when nothing else was changed. Second, some 5 years ago I had a very similar laptop (8710p) and when I updated bios to F.0F, the same thing happened, but I happily downgraded the bios and everything was back to normal. Plus there are reports of others on the internet and these discussion boards in particular. Now with update to F.20.... There is no way to downgrade. It is embarassing: HP released an update that breaks functionality... and there is no way back (except replacing the system board indeed, which is expensive for laptops out of warranty). I was chatting and then talking over the phone with HP support. They aren't really any close to being professionals. First they said that my windows 7 is not officially supported and I should install xp or vista. I got xp installed just ... Read more

For around two or three months the system has been crashing on a weekly or biweekly basis and wasn't so much of a problem as to interfere and warrant investigation on my part. Within the past few days, however, it has gotten much worse and now crashes at least once daily. I have done what I can with my limited computer skills and determined ntoskrnl.exe is the culprit and followed some potential solutions found on this forum as well as other sites but to no avail. Although it may be mere coincidence, I feel it is worth noting that the vast majority of crashes (90%+) occur when the computer has been left on but I am not currently at the desk working on anything. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

Ok for the last month or so I have been dealing with a BSOD that will pop up randomly. At first I thought it was a RAM problem but have run memtest and replaced both sticks of RAM. I'm leaning towards it being a video card problem because I was getting a Memory Parity Error BSOD, and also an atidiag BSOD. Those 2 BSOD's would alternate. Well now I just get random BSOD's that could be almost anyfile name.

The main problem I have now is I can't get by the windows boot screen, and if I do, no more than 2 mins later I get another BSOD. Occasionally I don't even make the windows boot screen. I have tried to do a windows repair by booting off the CD, but it crashes while the windows CD loads all the drivers or whatever, so I can't even reinstall windows if I wanted to.

I also have recently reformated the hard drive, done a clean install of windows and have not solved this problem. I'm still leaning towards it being a video card problem, but now my question is could the video card cause a crash before windows even starts up? Or am I looking more towards a motherboard problem? I'm lost as to what to do, it's not like I could run diagnostics on it (which would be pointless cause I've done all tests possible.)

I would appreciate any help that can be offered. I'd be more than happy to give you anymore information if you need it. Thank you guys in advance.

Answer:BSOD has gotten worse, can not figure out the problem, I turn to you guys.

Random BSODs that point to nearly everything is either memory or motherboard problems, in my experience. If you have access to other systems and components, replace everything in your computer except the motherboard. If you still have problems, it's your motherboard. If the problems stop, add your own components back one by one until the problems return. Whichever part you added just before that, is your guy.

Good luck!

I sent in my laptop for repair as the graphics card was reporting code 43 (hardware issue) and wasn't working. I just got it back, and it's not reporting the error, but I can't even start GPU-based games. Previously, games would fall back to running on the CPU. My warranty expired during the repair, but since this is a symptom of the same issue, can I get it fixed? How can I go about getting this laptop to work? Thank you.

Hello! I was asked to post here with DDS logs

For the past six weeks, I've had a simple search engine redirecting virus on my Windows 7. For five weeks, I tried running typical anti-virus software such as MalwareBytes, AVG 2013, and Microsoft Security Essentials. It wasn't too harmful, and I pretty much just needed to click a search engine result a second time and I would get to where I needed to go. However, this past week during a long holiday break, I tried running new antivirus software such as Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot, ComboFix, and TDSSKiller. The last two seemed successful at finding problems, but at the cost of the virus reacting viciously and deleting files and cutting off access to the internet.

I tried system restore, and was able to get it mostly back to the way it was before trying to install the new antivirus software, except that I now need to grant permission to allow Adobe Flash videos to work every time I wish to view one. This problem mostly occurred on Firefox, so I swapped to Internet Explorer. However, IE seemed to just recently develop a new problem of its own called Sweetpacks, and the homepage and searches are redirected to this obvious virus page. Checked back on Firefox, which I had uninstalled and reinstalled, and noticed that Firefox was able to disable this Sweetpacks add-on because it detected the security risk.

The guy said a system restore to factory settings would work. I did that and the problem was STILL there. After countless scans the virus seems to be gone. First thought is it sounds as if the 'left-click' is sticking or repeating very fast.
Does the same effect happen if you use the touch pad or a plugged-in USB mouse?
Can you go into Control panel, hardware, devices and printers, mouse, 'Pointer options' tab. Set the 'Set pointer speed' in the centre of the scale.
Then untick the box 'Enhance pointer precision'
In the 'Buttons' tab, click 'Restore defaults'
See if that makes any difference.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

NEVER buy a Lenovo  I just bought a brand new Flex laptop from the Microsoft Store.  A MAJOR PROBLEM for those who use the touchpad.  It doesn't allow the user to turn off the drag in the mouse buttons (only).  When I use the touch pad, i move the cursor (for example to select a radial button).  However when I go to click on the left or right mouse buttons on the touch pad it's so sensitive to movement that it moves the curosor away from the radial button. There should be a way to map the touch pad.  Lenovo blames the software and the touchpad company.  Yet they chose this touchpad.  I need support from one company.  They sent me to talk with the touchpad company.  Sorry.  It's your Laptop Lenovo.  To add to Lenovo's problem, their support is in India and it is almost impossible to understand the support person or their supervisor.

Original Thread: That's why Windows 10 is much WORSE than 8.1 on Tablets
It's just a shame they downgraded so much from the amazing 8.1 Start Screen and Tablet Experience.
It is so unfortunate I could even cry

Answer:That's why Windows 10 is much WORSE than 8.1 on Tablets

Yep it's been a fight for a year now. Win 10 has barely improved for Tablets at all. Edge is also missing any semblance of touch mode that functions like Metro IE. Been really frustrating, before RTM people were going on about telling us to stop complaining because the OS isn't done and now that is officially released in a horrible state for Tablets people have gone quiet.
Still need a ton of options and GUI tweaks to make Win 10 as good on Tablets as Win 8.1 was.
