Experiencing (side by side application error). Need troubleshooting tips

Question: Experiencing (side by side application error). Need troubleshooting tips

So far I have done this and it did not help:

1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All
Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run
as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a
confirmation, type the password, or click Allow/Continue.

2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
(The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces
incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.)

FYI, She gets the message when trying to launch the Second Life Phoenix Viewer, however Second Lifes Viewer 2 loads without error.

I am going to perform a CHKDSK on her Lenovo as recommended in an archived thread from this forum and hopefully that will solve the issue. Can anybody think of anything else?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When trying to open a number of programmes including Microsoft Works Word processor is "application cannot be opened as side by side configuration is incorrect"

How do I tackle this please!

Answer:Error message: "application cannot be opened as side by side configuration is incorrect"

Hi

To be honest I never meet such problem with the operating system but firstly I would recommend trying to repair the OS.

Boot up the notebook and press F8. Then choose option called Repair the Computer.
Now you will see a some options. Here I would recommend choosing the first option called: Startup Repair.
This option automatically fixes problems that are preventing Windows from starting.
But I?m not quite sure if this is good enough to fix your issue with the system.

If this does not help I would recommend reinstalling this Microsoft Works package.

Windows 7, on Toshiba Laptop, all of the recent windows updates have been installed.
I was having issues running the new zynga game on facebook, the ville. I assumed that it was a resource hog and didn?t like the laptop, and it was possible that I didn?t have the most recent installment of Adobe flash, so I upgraded that as well. It still wouldn?t run. So I decided to clean up the hard drive.
I used control panel to uninstall a game that the kids no longer play because it?s now obsolete. I also uninstalled Quickbooks (it wasn?t just quickbooks, it was a bunch of crapware that was installed on the laptop when we purchased it, but since we don?t use quickbook I figured we could get rid of it.) the only reason I bother stating all of this is because I believe in full disclosure. You never know which action caused the issue so it?s best to tell it all. Sorry for the ramble.
I have been noticing that the machine was running slower lately, so that is why I decided to de-clutter the hard drive.
After doing this and rebooting I found that I was unable to run Rockmelt, it came up with the following:
Error: The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me, I was referred to this forum by nasdaq in the malware removal forum to help with some residual problems I've been having with my hp notebook (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/498613/infected-with-virus-appplicunwntwin32adwareibryteh289567536/

The following error is popping up when I try to open certain programs on my computer: "The application failed to load because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.  Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

I am able to access the sxstrace.exe tool but when I try to get the trace to run, I get an error message- "Access is denied" (see above post for screenshots, etc.).  At first I just noticed this happening with my Kindle for PC, but has now graduated to my Dropbox as well.

Any advice on what to do next?

Also- I realize the sxstrace.exe tool may not have worked because I didn't access the cmd prompt in administrator mode which gives me a different prompt: Windows\system32.

Will try that as well.

So recently, I received a blue screen of death. The error was something along the lines of:
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

When it restarted, windows advised me to perform a system file check. So I left my computer for a bit, and when I came back it was already at the logon screen. However, when I logged on and started firefox, first thing I noticed was that all my bookmarks and some extensions had been wiped.
I then tried to start Microsoft Word but I received the following error:

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect";

I receive that error for most of my other programs.

When I tried to run event viewer, it says:

"MMC could not create the snap-in"

Please help. Is it possible to restore my applications without reinstalling them all?

So, I had the same problem as above. I had developed a dll using Qt that worked fine on my machine but would not register on another. The familiar "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect..." appears when I ran the depencency walker on the dll.

So this was the solution that worked for me, which may help some others see what's going wrong here:

Within my dll the manifest emedded read:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
<dependency>
<dependentAssembly>
<assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC80.DebugCRT" version="8.0.50608.0" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"></assemblyIdentity>
</dependentAssembly>
</dependency>
</assembly>

It seemed that the assembly definition was not found upon my client computer. So then, from within my original computer's 'Windows\WinSxS' directory, I copied the 'x86_Microsoft.VC80.DebugCRT_1f...' directory and it's associated files within the 'Policies' and 'Manifests' directories onto the client computer. Once copied, the dll registrered fine.

Hope this helps...

This morning I came into my office to find my pc (p4, win7) apparently in a loop. the cpu usage was very high on all four processors, and the disk usage was high as well. I tried restarting the computer but there was so much cpu usage that I couldn't even type. So after 10 minutes or so, I just pulled the plug.

The first problem was that Norton Internet Security stopped working. After an hour on 'chat' with Symantec, they reloaded the software for me and now NIS is working properly. But I still have (at least) two probems. (1) My RIMDeviceManager fails with an 0xC015002 error, and all my MSOffice 2007 programs fail with "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect."

I unstalled all the Microsoft C++ programs and then did an MSOffice "repair" and it looks like C++ Redistributable (32 and 64-bit) were re-installed, but Outlook, Excel, etc, still get the same error. Everything I've read about fixing the problem is way over my head (and I'm fairly technical). Does anyone have a clue what I should be tracking down?

Re: Office 2007: The application has failed to start because the side-by-side config.

I've done some more checking and find that quite a few programs are failing to initialize because of this side-by-side thing: Adobe Premiere Elements and Adobe Photoshop Elements, Cyberlink Power Director 8, Microsoft LifeCam (no error, it just doesn't do anything), FormatFactory - there may be more, I haven't checked them all. Each program fails to initialize with the 'side-by-side configuration' error message. Please help!!

Hello
I have come across a few similar posts regarding this error message but mine seems to display a different error message when using the event log. I have noticed that the error messages posted by other users displayed are quite different e.g. D:\3ds

I dont receive such a detailed error message. My error message in event log is: Activation context generation failed for "S:\spa\spa.exe".Error
in manifest or policy file "S:\spa\spa.exe" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax.
I am using a software called premier spa and it keeps failing to open.
I just wanted to post my error message and see if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this problem.

Thank you.

First of all, I've gotten this on at least 3 different programs. Everyone who's written about this seems to think it's related to their specific program...it's not! Secondly, what I find here in the forum on the subject tells me there has been no solution...also am unable to find any on the 'net'. I think it acts like a virus and is spreading...

What's up with this??? Does anyone know...? It has kept me from opening iTunes so I can't work with my iPad anymore. Certainly there must be someone knowledgeable enough to know what this is and what to do about it...right?:

This is the error I get when I tried to install Avast on my cousin's computer. The same error message appeared when I tried to install it on my own machine but all I had to do was uninstall and reinstall to get it to work. I gave up with it for my cousin's computer and just used that one that they had installed on their old machine. I want to get rid of Norton on my laptop, but don't want to be left hanging with no AV if I get the same error on my laptop. Anyone have any insight before I do this?

Answer:Side by side error stopping all 32bit apps and many window's fucctions

Hi scott and Welcome to Seven Forums.

Did you try to boot into safe mode? Or even better a system restore?

First post...

I am coming to you as a last resort. I built my own PC and installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit OEM edition. Has been working fine for ~2 years.
Now every time I attempt to open a program I get the error "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail".

The only progam that is barely working is IE 64 bit edition. I cannot download or run any files.

Microsoft wants 59$ to speak to a technical support representative(What a joke, multibillion dollar company wants extra $ for tech support??...).

Doing a ton of research I have tried various things to remedy this with no avail. System restore did not work. Doing a sfc /scannow in command prompt does not work, it does not even run. Wasted 3 hours of my life doing a thorough checkdisk as well.

The error in the event log is as follows...
Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.c..-controls.resources_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6001.18000_en-us_72e6f33f34dfabb9.manifest" on line 18. Invalid Xml syntax.

So the problem has to do with this manifest file? I really am clueless as to my next move. I can not download and run anything at all.... Can I do a Vista repair installation with my OEM version?

Should I try and get my hands on a cheap upgrade version of Windows 7?

I have Vista. When someone sends me an Adobe document I can't open it. The error message says that my side by side configuration is inaccurate. If I save the document to my desktop, I can then open Adobe and open it from there but it is a hassle. Why can't I just open the document from the source?

On quite a few different programs, i'm getting the error message:

"The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail"

I've read so many forums online where people have had a similar issue, but nothing has been helpful. The most common suggestion is related to VisualC++ but when i installed it, I got the same error! I tried running it without saving, then I saved it and tried running it, again the same error.

I've opened the event viewer, theres quite a few 'sidebyside' error messages, but I dont know what to do with any of that information. The first side by side error is this one:

Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls,language="&#x2a;",processorArchitecture="X86",publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df",type="win32",version="6.0.0.0"
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Silverlight\4.0.50524.0\Silverlight.Configuration.exe

I havn't a clue how it started, my computer was fine yesterday, I opened it today to these errors, I tried rebooting but it didnt help.

If any more information is needed, I'll provide what I can.
Thanks

Hello

I am usually the person people go to when they have computer issues, but I am not by any means formally educated in any IT field or even familiar with C++, bin, dll files etc. but I am pretty good at figuring out resolutions to fairly complex computer situations both hardware and software related. Unfortunatly I am having quite a few problems with my new Vista laptop that I cannot resolve after trying every suggestion seen online.

1.) It seems to have started with Adobe. I installed adobe reader, and since then all my office programs, adobe, most other applications do not open. The error is a side by side config error. Heres are some examples in event log.

Well, nothing wrong in the SFC log. That has got to be good - as long as we get a lead from one of the other logs!

Ok so I am going to go straight into the good stuff.

Essentially I launch Dragon Age and get an error about side by side configuration. I have already done an enormous amount of research on this subject and have found that the problem is usually attributed to the C++ Redistributable from Microsoft.

I tried to remedy this problem 3 different ways (manually working from a system restore point where Dragon Age & Bioshock 2 did not work, but Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty MW2, and the Original Bioshock were still fully functional) this system restore point had the Microsoft 2008 C++ Redistributable installed, and again the games I listed in parenthesis were working fine.

I first uninstalled the 2008 Redistributable and downloaded and installed the 2005 Redistributable, restarted the computer (even though it did not prompt me) and ran into a massive error. Essentially, this install made every game unplayable (all of those I listed above).

Next, I uninstalled the 2005 Redistributable and reinstalled the 2008 without a restart, and tried to launch every game listed above. Of course, I was back to square one, with Dragon Age and Bioshock 2 still giving me the side by side configuration error.

Lastly I tried launching each game through the program 'depends.exe' (using the .exe) to see exactly which dependencies each game required. Of course, both Dragon Age and Bioshock 2 gave me the side by side configuration, telling me that a MSVCP80.dll file could not be found with... Read more

HI all,

Well my low post count is going to get a bit bigger.

On my desktop this morning I received this error,

The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect.....
Spent lots of time googleing and have done disc checks, start-up repair sfc /checknow, (or something like that as that was this morning), and all came up ok.

Next coarse of action looks like un-install and re-install of the .net framework and the Visual C++. Now that seems like a good idea but same error is coming up when trying to run the installers as there .exe..

Only managed to get files of the net by laptop.
Looks like repair install might be next

Any advise on how to get the .exe files running would be great. As it seems Im going nowhere till then.

Thanks
Timon

Answer:Side by side configuration incorrect...? Error stopping 95% of .exe

Sorry, also cant uninstall anything through control panel ether... so sad.
Thanks

*Edit*

I had wondered if it could have been a bit of nasty software, as was opening up some links to some screen shots of TPB and had a few more pop ups than I was happy with... closed them all of cause and didn't end up with anything downloaded that I was aware of. Only bring this up as this error seems to be linked with software install problems too.

Thanks

Hey guys im having a problem with Windows Live Messenger.

Answer:Windows Live Side-by-Side Configuration Error

Hello Andrew!

Welcome to the Vista Forums! I hope you enjoy your time here! Thanks for creating a new thread!

This error isn't the easiest to fix, but it also shouldn't be impossible.

Basically, although Windows can store two different version of a component, it cannot actually run two different versions at the same time.

The main available versions for that component are:

Code:
file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.21022.8_none_bcb86ed6ac711f91.manifest

file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_e163563597edeada.manifest

file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4148_none_5090ab56bcba71c2.manifest

file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4974_none_50940634bcb759cb.manifest
As you can see, neither of the conflicting components is using the very latest file version. Now, what to do about it!

Windows Live is a Microsoft product. It is unusual for a Microsoft Product to have this sort of old file versioning issue, as long as it is up to date.

Can you please download a new copy of Windows Live Messenger from here: Windows Live Messenger 2011 - Instant messaging (IM), video chat

and install all of your Windows Updates.

If this doesn't fix it, we can look at more technical fixes, but hopefully we won't have to go there.

Thanks again, and the very best of luck,

Richard

All, excuse my lack of computer knowledge but is there anyone out there who can dumb down an explantion or solution to the barrage of side by side config errors I just started getting whenever I try to run any application (e.g. Office or Photoshop)? I have literally scoured the posts/forums/internet looking for solutions and I think a lot of my problem is I don't know the lingo so the explanations look like they are writtien in Klingon. For instance, one suggestions was to run sxstrace.exe. How the heck do you do that? WHere do you do that? What do you do with the results? The example looked like a bunch of gobblygook was produced. I am sorry to drag this forum down, but maybe there are some tired experts out there tonight who are happy to use minimal brain effort to try to explain how I might resolve this. I appreciate any and all assistance!

Can you explain the error with a little more detail? When does it occur, what you are doing when it happens? Perhaps a screenshot of the error?

Hi everyone,

I am really new and not technically savvy like most of you seem to be!

I actually tried upgrading my iphone and that lead to having to upgrade itunes and that returned a side by side configuration error which I have spent hours trying to google and resolve - with no success. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated! I'm not sure what info you need or even where to start anymore. Thanks in advance.

My daughter's name is Megan Grace (MeganG) - you're not her are you?

Try running the System File Checker (SFC) - follow Option 2 of this SevenForums tutorial and attach your results (see option three to "shrink" the results) when you next post. You might have to run SFC a few times to completely resolve the SxS issues.

This has to be one of the most puzzling errors I've seen in awhile. Last night I was in the middle of playing quake wars when my computer BSOD on me.

On checking the event logs I got this strange side by side context activation error with ServerLauncher.exe of quake wars... Thing is I wasn't running a server.

Then out of the blue, not playing quake wars, just browsing, I got the SAME error again, side by side context activation with... serverlauncher. WTF? I hadn't fired up the game since it BSOD'ed the night before.

On looking up what this is about, I've found no relation to serverlauncher, but the same error linked to random programs that go from visual studio 8 (which I don't have installed), to some media software, to msn dll's etc...

I'm wondering if anyone else has some insight to this...

Good Morning,
I have three identical machines all running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2. All three have Office Home and Student 2010 installed. On one machine I have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling Office because I get the side by side configuration error on a random and recurring basis. Is there a permanent fix for this? I have the free upgrade for Windows 7 Home Premium for all three machines but have not used them because I am generally happy with Vista. Would upgrading to Win7 possibly help?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I just got a new HP desktop computer with Vista Home Premium SP1 loaded. I am trying to install an older Photosmart C6150 All-in-One printer. I downloaded the latest software from the HP webside. After install, the printer works great. When I run HP Solution Center to initiate a scanning operation, I get the following error message:

"C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqkygrp.exe The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. See event log...".

I have tried everything I can think of. I have used the L4 uninstall, disabled antivirus, cleaned the registry, etc. Nothing works. I spent hours on the HP web contact site but got no useful help. From searching other forums (including HP's) I know other people have experienced this or similar problems. Does anyone have a solution?

Re: 'The application has failed to start because it's side-by-side configuration is incorrectThis problem has annoyed me for months now, so I decided to have another go and I have just worked out how to successfully fix this issue!!!!!!!The file that has the problem is a manifest file that is required for any program written in Microsoft Visual C.In my case the file existed but was completely empty. The file is "C:\WINDOWS\WINXSX\MANIFESTS\x86_policy.8.0.microsoft.vc80.mfc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_none_8a14c0566bec5b24.manifest"As this is a system file, you cannot delete it from Vista (even with admin privileges) so first you have to take ownership of the file. To do, this follow the instructions on this link:"http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/how-to-delete-a-s...sta/"Once you own the file delete it and then reinstall the program that is failing (MS Flight Sim X Trail in my case).Everything now works absolutely fine.hardwareanalysis.com

Win 7 64 bit SP1. Attempting to install m-audio 2496 driver version 6_0_8 using an exe file. I was told to do this by m-audio support to try to overcome some problems with clicks and crackles in the card.

But when I try to run the installer, I get the message that the application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect.

Support told me to try to install the drivers manually using the device manager (!) but as I pointed out to them that does not work because ....the drivers are tied up in the exe file.....however....

Then it was suggested that I install C++ 2008 redist. That did not work.

So what is causing this side by side error?

It's nearly two weeks now since I started to ask them for help, so I am a little desperate. Any help would be appreciated.

Would really appreciate help on the matter without quotes or links .

Hello all,

I apologize if this has problem been answered already but this thread is pretty long and to read every last one... well that would take a while. I'd been trolling around the site for a couple of hours before I decided to register and post here. The first part is a summary, the second is a repeat in words with a bit more detail.

History of problem:

1. Initial error: nvstorfl.dll corrupt or missing. BSOD a couple of times.
2. Then after startup repair fails, no boot.
3. Using Ubuntu disc, I replace nvstorfl.dll with known good from C:\Windows\DriverStore~
4. System boots, however now new error at 64 bit program launch - some other DLL and no Aero. Try to turn on Aero, but it says theme not compatible and Windows Desktop Manager is not on.
5. Frustrated, I commence with a repair install using burned win7 64 sp1 iso from mydigitallife.
6. After repair, some programs open, some don't. Happening to both 32 bit and 64 bit programs now. The error now is "side-by-side configuration is incorrect".

Anyway, this is how it all happened. After trying to hotswap some hardware (sata DVD rom), I got a BSOD which led to errors in opening x64 programs. They opened, but an error message was displayed citing nvstorfl.dll as being corrupt or missing. After a couple of BSODs, I couldn't boot. So, remembering that nvstor~ had been mentioned in the error, I booted through Ubuntu 11 and went to the directory for nvstor~. The file had size 0 KB. So, I copied another versio... Read more

Answer:Side-by-side error after repair install

I'd uninstall the Nvidia software package if you dont' use special settings and run only with the driver.

Turn it off first in msconfig>Startup and >Services (after hiding all MS services) or it will leave its Reg key droppings there, and it still might.

This problem appears after the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3198586) update.

After the update, several applications will not run - the error stating "its side-by-side configuration is incorrect" Deleting the update resolves the problem, but I can't seem to block the update.

-Foreword-
So I recently acquired a Vista and found out (through some heavy usage of Google) that it was an extremely annoying issue some users were facing. I figured out how to over-come this error quite simply.

-Tutorial-
This is a tutorial on how to fix "side by side configuration" errors when launching programs from Vista. SBS configuration error is basically when a program refers to something that it can't find in C++. This is caused by corrupted C++ libraries, or non-existent libraries. The following tutorial shows you how to remove all C++ libraries and update to the current version on your computer.

1. Click on the start button, choose "Control Panel"
2. Navigate down to "Programs>Uninstall a program" (in classic view it's labeled "Programs and Features")
3. Navigate down to "Microsoft Visual C++ 20## Redistributable" ## = 05, 08, 10, or 12.
4. Uninstall all of them.
5. In the following steps choose # 32. for 32-bit systems and # 64. for 64-bit systems. Click on the links, download and install them in order one at a time. Delete the installers after use, all of the installers are named the same thing so they will just append (vcredist.exe, vcredist (1).exe, vcredist (2).exe) making it difficult to keep track of which you have installed. <b>To determine your os version</b>, open the start menu. Right click on computer and choose "Properties". In the "System" section, look for "S... Read more

Hello,

tried to follow the other posts to correct this, but, no luck as yet.

I started CMD prompt, going in as administrator, I ran sfc /scannow and it returns with... "windows resource protection could not start the repair service"

I cannot d/load any c++ 20xx redistributables, etc, as code 1935 pops up.

I tried to get around the 1935 code by renaming mscoree. I managed to rename it by taking ownership, but, still could not d/load the c++ files.

I am well out my depth here and have been trying unsuccessfully to overcome these problems, so, any guidence/help would be most appreceiated.

My computer is an HP6720s running Vista32. All my problems started when I installed Bitdefender 2011 total security. Which will not run due to the side by side config. I did purchase a registry cleaner that found lots of issues, but sorted them all as far as I am aware.

Thanks in advance for any help

Working on a client's computer running Win 7 Home Premium and Office 2010. When opening Excel it crashes stating there is an "side by side" error, event ID 59.

here's the dialog box: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL,EXE The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail"

Following is from the event log:

Activation content generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\EXCEL.EXE.Manifest" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax.

Also PowerPoint opens OK but when trying to open a file it says that there is a problem with the content of the file. Attempts to repair don't work. The file opens on other systems so it is not the file.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the C++ packages with no help. Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, so my computer (Toshiba Satellite M305-S4848) was working perfectly fine this morning, then it died because the charger fell out. When I tried to turn it back on, it said that Windows could not start up & took me to the start up repair screen. Apparently, it tried to repair itself & let me start my computer up, but now, whenever I try to open ANY program, it has that side-by-side configuration error. When I tried searching for a solution, other forums said to open a command prompt and type in sfc /scannow which I did & it gave me the results, but now IDK what to do...someone please help!!!

Hey Guys,

I have been trying to start an online game, but everytime i run it i get an error.
In the error it states that: the program cannot start because the side by side configuration is unvalid..

things i've tried and did not work:
- Reinstalling all microsoft visual ++
- Contact microsoft --> In the end they told me to install a program called reimage (cost me 25 bucks..?). Then i had to read on this forum that the software is actually installing malware on your PC? Still not sure if its true o rnot, but it was stuck on 80% in the end and it didnt finish even after 4 hours.

More important information: The PC is just new. Bought it off amazon a few days ago and it arrived today!

Is there anyone who can help me out? I cannot find a solution for this Side by Side error..

Thanks in advance!

I am a complete computer noob so forgive me if the solution to this is really simple....

As of maybe two days ago, whenever I try to open programs (mostly Microsoft Office programs i.e. Word, Powerpoint etc.) and also Acrobat Reader I get the following error message:
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.

And when I try to open a file or MSN Messenger I get this:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

Any advice/assistance anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated. I have already run a System Restore as this is pretty much the only troubleshooting measure I actually know how to do, but given clear instructions I have been able to successfully fix things by myself in the past. Please also advice me if you think I might risk wiping my whole computer or something else dire like that because I can wait until the weekend and just get my computer savvy friend to come and have a look. Is it possible that this could be caused by a virus? I haven't installed any updates or anything recently so I don't think that would be the cause.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Everyone:

I am trying to install Dragon Naturally Speaking 11 to my Windows 8 Machine

It was installed at one time.

Then, I got a wierd dialog box from Office 2013 that asked me if I wanted to do something to...I don't even remember what it said. I clicked yes to it because I was trying to get Office installed.

Then the next time I went looking for Drgaon it was no longer installed.

So I ran the set up to reinstall it and it is giving me a Side By Side Configuration Error.

So I did what the message said, and checked the event viewer.

It said that the Error was Error Code 59, and I have no idea what that is.

So, I ran sfc and scannow.

It said everything was cool.

So, I then ran the sxs thing. But to be honest, I wasn't too sure what I was looking for.

So I went to look for System Restore, and I dont even see the option to return the computer to a state that it was before Office 2013.

So I decided to just run System Retore to the earliest possible date.

Then System Restore doesn't go past initializing for about an hour. So I can't even get this thing to run.

This is a new laptop and I have never had so many frustrations with it. Windows 8 is a killer.

Any way, if any one has any suggestions on other stuff I could try that would be the coolest.

Peace,
CT

Answer:Side By Side Error 59 Trying To Install Dragon

Your best/safest/quickest option is to restore the laptop to its original factory settings and start over. An SXS error is rare but serious - and there aren't any tools available for fixing problems with the WINSXS folder.

Hi all,

I've booted my computer today and now I am unable to run any program at all, I have read some threads that installing the C++ redistributables can fix this problem but of course I am unable to run those as well, also tried a registry tweak but no change:

"Error: The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect"

I've ran 'sfc /scannow' and it's found errors, the logs reads:

Answer:Can't run any .exe files (side by side config error)

Hi, the log failed to be attached.
Could you try again please.
Open Notepad, save the log to it, then save on your desktop, as it may be quite long use these brackets around it [ code] [ /code] then copy and paste into a reply.
Hopefully that should do the trick.

I've been running into a problem on my windows vista 64-bit, starting this morning, and can't seem to fix it. I tried opening itunes, mozilla, crysis, and other programs, and every time I do I get the error message:

I checked in my event log, and it says the side-by-side error is number 33, if that helps. I've been online for hours now, and can only find the solution to download Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 (file name: vcredist_x86.exe) but as soon as I try to run the program I get the same side-by-side error.

any help would be appreciated

Hello,
I have always lurked around the site,
but this is my first ever post for help
=)

My problem is this:
I am running Windows Vista 64 bit on an ASUS laptop and, after some "experimenting" with binding EXE's on XP and moving them over to Vista,
I started receiving the dreaded error message "This program has failed to start because it's side by side configuration is incorrect". Now, I'm no noob when it comes to computers...
But I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this problem.
THe most common solution I have found is to install the Visual C++ Redistributable, thing is...
When I run the installation EXE, the same error appears.
I have attempted running in safe mode, system restore, and all the usual options, and every thread with this same problem is often ignored, therefore I have not been able to find a solution.

Can ANYONE here please help me?
My father needs this laptop for his work...
and it has been out of commission for almost a week now,
so any help short of a repair installation would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Answer:Side by Side configuration error- on every program!

I realized that I am able to install the 32 bit Redistributable,
but it makes no difference...

I do have DiscSpeed.exe installed with Nero 8.

I do not have any problem burning CDs, ....

..but would like to get rid of this error (without un-installing DiscSpeed.exe ) and find out what manifests are , why are they conflicting??

If AVG won't install (though you didn't mention why), it may be because you are infected.

Read the sticky and post a log in the Malware forum. After cleaning, you can then deal with other problems.

Answer:Error - side by side configuration as incorrect.

Hello, archz3.

Please try the following:

1. Open your start menu.
2. Search %temp%, and press enter.
3. Delete the files in the temp folder.
4. Restart your computer.
5. Re install Audacity.

Also, cleaning out your %temp% folder every 2-3 days is good, it removes files that you don't need, freeing up some space on your harddrive.

You might try using Windows' "System Restore" to roll Windows back to a previous state when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

I am getting a side-by-side configuration error. I worked through a post by niemiro (Richard). Couldn't get it working, decided to reimage my machine to factory. Even that didn't fix it. After reimaging I reinstalled all Vista Updates and the redistributes listed with no luck.
In the thread I was following, that leaves me at uploading sfcdetails.txt and sxstrace.txt. I am only having this issue with one program, so I ran the same program 3 times. After looking at the log files, it appears my sfcdetails only found an error with the ini for the sidebar ( which microsoft said to ignore ) and I couldn't make heads or tails out of sxstrace.txt.
If anyone is available to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Side-By-Side Configuration Error.

Hello oriontal, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

Very, very well done on uploading those logs. You have done them perfectly, and have done very, very well by yourself!

As you have worked out, the SFC log is absolutely fine. Nothing to do there.

However, the albeit slightly confusing SXS Trace log has shown to me what I think is the problem.

I think that this problem is actually with the one piece of software you are having a problem with (NoScrubs IRIS)

I think that your issue lies in a Conflict between Processor Specific and Processor Agnostic assembly references.

What this actually means in normal English is that you are running 64bit Windows as you say that you are, and NoScrubs IRIS asks to start x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.3053_none_d08d7bba442a9b36.manifest. However, later on, it asks to start either x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.3053_none_d08d7bba442a9b36.manifest or the 64bit equivalent when required. This starts two copies of the same component, and causes your error.

Don't worry too much about this explanation. However, it is only my best theory. I need to check that this guess of mine is correct. I think that this is actually an error with the NoScrubs IRIS software, and if required, we can contact IRIS. However, before we contact the developers of that software, I shall see if there is anything I can do to fix it, or prove that it is the developer's problem to solve.

Right, I need to take a copy of the Manifest fi... Read more

Hello,

I installed a new program and when I try to open I get error "The application failed to start because the side-by-side configuration is incorrect.

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\SerialIO.com\SerialMagic Pro\SerialMagicPro.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.MFC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",versio n="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

I've downloaded the current .NET and Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2013

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:Side-by-side configuration error

Welcome to SevenForums,

Looks it needs:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

Seems also that there's an order to respect when installing the different packages of Visual C++:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.

Today after recieving my new PC and GPU yesterday, Ive been getting this side by side error config error and I cannot launch any .exe files. When i booted up my PC, I installed flash and LoL (which includes C ++ files) and everything was working fine. The following morning I guess I hadnt booted my PC down properly so the black screen which prompts you to start windows normally popped up and I thought nothing of it. After starting up, I attempted to check my email via IE but it wouldnt start. It would open then immediately close as if sometging was force closing it. I attempted to start up LoL and I got the errors in the pics uploaded. Ive been researching all morning and Ive come across a couple threads where the support said the error was most likely due to Microsoft Visual and to uninstal then instal, but I cannot uninstal due to the error in the picture and I cannot instal either since I cannot access the internet. Any help would be highly appreciated. Im using my phone btw.

I have a new Toshiba laptop ... with VistaX64. I receive an error message that reads "side by side configuration error" that doesn't allow me to continue. Any qick solutions to get rid of the problem? Thanks, Art

Answer:side by side configuration error

three things to try.

1. The "side-by-side" component is associated with the Vista Windows Resource
Protection (WRP). You may have a corrupted file in the SxS folder.

To resolve this issue, use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to repair
these files.
To do this, follow these steps:

This may take some time to run, so be patient.

2. Install the vcredist_x86.exe http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

3. Install msxmli.msi http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

or read some where this might work also, run UE3Redist file in the Binaries/Windows folder and it fixes the problem

Hey. Yesterday I got a game someone I know (but not in contact with) programmed back in 2007 in C++.
When I try running it I get this error message:

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit.
I tried running it with compatibility settings of Windows XP, but when I did that I didn't get anything... no windows popped up, not even the error.
What can I do to fix this?

thank you.

Answer:Side-by-side error when trying to run a game.

side-by-side errors are usually associated with the Visual C++ Redistributables.

1. Re-install the following:Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x86)
Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (x86)
Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable (x86)2. Install any updates to the programs in 1.
3. Re-install the game you were given if it has installation software for it. Otherwise, just try playing it again.

Best wishes. Let us know how it turns out.

I am looking on the forums, and a lot of people have been having these errors. Unfortunately so am I, I was going through some of these and ran the Command Prompt sfc scan. The problem it came up with was...

"Windows Resource Preotection found corrupt files but ws unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log"

Then when I try to open te CBS.Log access is denied... Does anyone know why windows hasnt figured out a way to prevent this sort of thing from happening yet?

Answer:Side by side configuration error

Hello, unfortunately , you are the 3rd " side by side" person this week, this seems to be a tough one to " fix " The best and last resort after this one or two articles posting fixes for this issue was to just do a reinstall of the OS.
You say you used a recovery tool, was this from your console that came installed with your computer ? I am suggesting that you retry that tool, and lets hope it works this time, or you will have to do a back to factory default setting if your recovery tool has that for a last option fix. Post back results, there are tutorials here for a repair install if you have a dvd that came with computer . Let us know what you need to get it back up and running.
You could try the " scf /scannow " using command prompt , restart, run it again, then restart, If after the 3rd running of the SFC tool, if you still have not got it fixed , then the registry will have to be repaired by a reinstall . Post back your results.

I have an SXS trace if this helps....it shows a syntax error (See below)

Hi there,

I recently rebooted one day and I am now recieving errors like this on many programs (but not all)

"[App path]
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."

Ive done some research, and it seems some can fix this, and some cant. Im hoping some one here can help me out. I already tried uninstalling, and reinstalling some of the problem apps, as well as every redistributable I can for the MSVC libraries. No luck.

I cant even open the event viewer from the control panel. How ever I was able to get open by doing a search for the application and launching one of the 4 or 5 ones I found. I was able to track it down to a very specific winsxs dir. They are all the same. How ever I have no idea how to repair or find that file or what I am supposed to do there.

Im fairly competent at computers, so if you need any further info from me I should be able to provide that.

OS: Vista64 Ultimate with SP2

-begging- Please help me. I dont want have to restore from a 4 month old backup (at least I have a backup haha)

Here are a couple of the general info errors in the event viewer.
