Now that Microsoft Security Essentials is generally available to consumers in 19 countries, we've had a chance to go over the data, and there are some very interesting results. Just in the first week we saw well over 1.5 million downloads of Microsoft Security Essentials, but the price (free to Windows users) is hard to beat!
Microsoft Malware Protection Center : Microsoft Security Essentials ? Week One
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Mitigating Factors
Mitigation refers to a setting, common configuration, or general best-practice, existing in a default state, that could reduce the severity of this issue. The following mitigating factors may be helpful in your situation:
? An attacker must have valid logon credentials to exploit this vulnerability. The vulnerability could not be exploited by anonymous users.
? An attacker could use the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) to exploit this vulnerability only if MSRT has not already run on the system. For the majority of end users, the current version of the MSRT will already have downloaded and run automatically through automatic updating. {Bold Added}
Microsoft is releasing this security advisory to help ensure customers are aware that an update to the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine also addresses a security vulnerability reported to Microsoft. The update addresses a privately reported vulnerability that could allow elevation of privilege if the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine scans a system after an attacker with valid logon credentials has created a specially crafted registry key. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the LocalSystem account. The vulnerability could not be exploited by anonymous users.

Thanks for sharing.
It?s not uncommon for security solutions to have issues with products offering functionality that overlaps or conflicts theirs, and Microsoft Security Essentials is no exception.
Apparently, Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1 fails to play nice with antivirus products and with some solutions designed to let users manage their computers.
In such cases, users will get an error message when launching MSE, according to the software giant.
Specifically, when they see Microsoft Security Essentially display the following: ?You haven't run a scan on your computer for a while. This could put your computer at risk,? they should know that something is wrong.
?This error appears as the result of third party anti-virus and/or system cleaner products conflicting with Microsoft Security Essentials,? Microsoft said.Click to expand...

hey guys, i just heard about this recently after reading another thread and it sounds great.
main points:
- free
- low system use
- created by microsoft (good or bad i guess)
- updated regularly
what do you guys think? i heard it only uses 5 or 6mb of memory and isn't plagued with the bloat and slowdowns other AV software create.
i'm just worried about giving MS too much information on my PC.
right now i'm running avast and this has been pretty decent for me so far, but this MSE sounds like it has promise.
edit: i'll be formatting soon so i thought i'd try it out with a clean system. im considering trying it out soon though.
So I stumbled across this today, first I'd heard of it so far. I've been using MSE, and now on Win 8 Defender, for ages...... Am I going to ditch WD this weekend? Dunno, maybe...
So what are your thoughts? Time to ditch MSE/Defender? Blown out of proportion?
I still say the best AV is common sense, but for the likes of those who click blindly, would you still recommend or install MSE?
How's this for corporate transparency and honesty? Microsoft is now saying that, yeah, its built-in Security Essentials antivirus program will "always be on the bottom" of antivirus software rankings, so you should use an additional third-party program on top of it.
PC Pro reports that Microsoft has decided to turn Security Essentials into a "baseline" program and it does not intend to be the best antivirus program in the business. Instead the company is just sharing its virus tracking findings with the security industry so they can develop better antivirus programs.
Um, okay. So what does this mean for Windows users? Basically, if you want better virus and malware protection, look elsewhere than the built-in program offered by Microsoft. I'm using the free program Avast, based on reliability ratings. (Sometimes the program pops up annoying notification windows, but it isn't a system resource hog, at least, and usually unintrusive while offering peace of mind.)
Microsoft Security Essentials has been failing independent s... Read more
Despite seeing MSE at the bottom of 'that' list, I was quite amused at how many other big names were as mediocre.
MS bought a good AV company, one of the top in it's day, seems like, as many others before, they've let it slide. Shame.
On the fence myself, I really don't like Avast, will probable look for some alternative, when I have more time. May try out Bitdefender.
oh, well that was easy enough, done!
hey guys, i have some sensitive information on my machine regarding work.
does anyone know if it's possible for Microsoft Security Essentials to report data back to Microsoft on filenames etc?
it just seems like i'm giving microsoft a lot of control. i'm using a microsoft firewall, OS and now, their AV.
thanks guys
Is the above enough security or should I be going for an anti-virus program as well?
MSE is fine.
If you need extra security, Malware Bytes works well with MSE.

Hello Francis,
It's both wrapped up in one program.
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
I have a question.
After removing a virus from my computer, thanks to you guys I downloaded a bundle that includes Hijack This, Malwarebites Anti-Malware, Spybot S&D, CCleaner, Super AntiSpyware, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Doctor.
During the removal process it was recommended to disable Microsoft Security Essentials but I didn't know how; so I removed it in add/remove programs.
Now I want to install Spyware Doctor, it says to remove Microsoft Security Essentials first...when I go to add/remove programs I don't see it there, I see a ton of MS updates...where could it be hiding?
I use windows xp and Mozilla Firefox.
Also, what do you recommend to install as protection? Should I keep using Microsoft Essentials again or Spyware Doctor?
Thanks so much for your help!
JVB
Hi
Personally I would keep using Microsoft Security Essentials (so re-install it) and install Spywareblaster, CCleaner (not an antimalware app but good for
cleaning up temps) and Malwarebytes, but only use the free version of MBAM as an on demand scanner.
Can also read the info HERE on how to protect yourself and the guide has the links to
download of any of the apps.
But the main part of online protection is you and where you download from, so using say p2p applications or less safe download sites increases your risk
of possible infection, also keep your Windows and any applications fully upto date always.
*if you do wish to remove MSE then re-install it then uninstall via add/remove then reboot, then try installing your chosen AV application again.
I have Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on a HP 530 laptop. I have recently downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials. My problem is that, when I try to install it, it only gets as far as the validate windows page before stopping with the message "Microsoft Security Essentials set up has stopped working.....etc" I have a genuine windows installation and anyway, the program instantly stops working before it could validate my copy.
Does anyone else have this problem or know of a solution.
Thanks in anticipation
Hello,
First, try downloading a new copy from here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials
You can also look in the Event Viewer to see if any errors are logged.
With respect to all.
Microsoft has recently launched "MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS" a real time AV.
I wish to know whether it is worth installing or should wait for some time for now.
Further I have AVAST installed on my PC. Will it interfere with it? Is it advisable to
run both AVAST and "MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS"? If not, which one should
be given preference?
Thanks.
Manoj
You should only run one Antivirus program at a time. You could run into conflicts and false alarms running more than one. Here is an article on Microsoft Security Essentials: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2353447,00.asp. It is definitely better than nothing, but still has a little ways to go.

Morro (Microsoft Security Essentials)
The thread title says it all. I have read about Microsoft Security Essentials, and thought i'd give it a go. Wrong, its not available in Europe yet as a Beta. Little bit of hunting and I found somewhere to download from. The actual download only took about 3 minutes. Small download cuppled with a fast connection helps.
Once downloaded had I not done screen shots at every step, it wouldhave taken about 5 minutes from start of instalation to start of the first update scan.
On the machine I have installed it on I was using Avira Antivir, which I uninstalled as not to cause any conflict.
For the moment I have left everything as Microsoft recomend. This evening I am going to play around with a few applications that I know both Avira and KIS put at high risk.
Below is a walk through from start of instalation to end. All pretty self explanitory.
Continauation of pics
What do you know. I have just done a full scan as I have been doing this post. On my USB drive I know there are corrupt files which both KIS and Avira had reported dangerous, this did not even pick them up..
Also I know Mucks started a thread about Morro, but I didn't want to hijack his thread with my images ettc, but if Mods/Admin think it would be better to combine the two rather than confuse people with two different threads, well go for it...
Running on Windows 7....
I want to find a good security program/programs that I can recommend to my friends. I have been checking out a website in reference to "Microsoft Security Essentials". Is this a good program to use? Would I need to run any other adware removal tools long with it? I just watched a video at www.microsoft.com/security/essentials. The video advised to uninstall all other antivirus before using. Does this include spyware removal tools like Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware, or can these tools be used along side of Microsoft security Essential? Another question; is their any current tutorial on the removal tools given here on bleeping computer. The ones I see are all outdated. Thanks.
Id recommend Microsoft Security Essentials along side with Malwarebytes Antimalware, and Super Anti-Spyware.

MSE is pretty good. Just remember that no AV can really prevent infections. They are more of a band-aid than anything else. If you surf the Internet with a healthy sense of paranoia you can avoid most problems yourself.

MSE constantly is disabled even when my computer is on or goes to Yellow - Potentially unprotected - in the sys tray and I am asked to run scans five or six times a day. It always runs a quick scan when I boot up, and I ran a full scan yesterday. I need to use my computer, not constantly run scans.
How do I get this to work properly and stop anyone from disabling it?
(Other security programs are also being disabled and some have to be uninstalled and re-installed to get them to switch on. Other threads will deal with those.)

I recently downloaded and installed Microsoft's FREE Security Essentials program. Today I noticed that my Windows Defender program is OFF. I can't seem to switch it ON, yet my Security Center indicates that all is good and all GREEN. My question is, does this Microsoft program automatically turn OFF Windows Defender?Update: I noticed that Windows Defender is no longer listed in the Security Center. Wondering if that could be my answer.???OS: Windows Vista 64/Ubuntu 8.04 64CPU/Ram: E8500/8GB PC2-6400Manufacturer/Model: AVA Direct / Built online
When you install Security Essentials it will disable, & possibly uninstall, Windows Defender as they both do the same job."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..."

If i uninstalled Security Essentials from my laptop can it mess up the system or make it slower or overall affecting the laptop or the laptop performance in any way!
Hi,
I am using microsoft securty essentials and I am comfortable with it.
I am wondering how the virus detection rate is compared to other free virus scanners.
Anyone has a comparsion of free anti virus tools?
i usually check the link below first. there's others out there.
AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software - Welcome to AV-Comparatives.org
i was wondering how good this program is and how it compares to norton...thx
Use the search function. There are heaps of threads on this. We don't need another one
2 more repliesI have a question:
Is it recommended to run Microsoft Security Essentials and Norton Anti-virus on the same computer? Is Essentials an anti-virus program or just a spyware-malware program?
Thank you
Both are AV programs. It's not recommended to run more than one.
2 more repliesIs there a way to schedule their updates to occur at a certain time? I use Satellite Internet and have download limits but there is a time period when there is no limit so I schedule downloads during that time. It's worked well for me so far but I got a new laptop and download MSE for my antivirus (was using pctools on the old computer) and can't figure out how to schedule the updates. My OS is Win 7 Pro
You can't schedule when you want updates to occur.

I have just finished building a PC for someone and loaded a genuine windows 7 OS, after activating it i got the usual reminder about MSE and as i have always installed Avast on the PCs i build i was just wondering if it has improved at all from the earlier versions.
Bill in my opinion MSE is a doing great. I'm also a long time user of Avast, have no issues with it as well.
Unfortunately AV comparatives don't run MSE on a test bench.
I have MSE on a few PCs- and am happy with it.
Its a recommendedv AV by chaslang and many other MVPs.
Cheers..
Edit to Add: Its very current and is very able from what I see. I'll not go into it as the thread would lead to another tech site.

hi !
i was doing some big filecopy (17.7 GB) today, with teracopy running as an extension under Total-Commander.
for some strange reason it was very slow so it took a very long time, that gave me plenty of time too see a mysterious / dangerous bug in Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).
i was using my admin account as i was doing some harddisk-maintenance, and MSE?s real-time protection was turned OFF !
of course i immediately tried to turn it on, but nothing happened until a few minutes later.
it then only took a few minutes until it was OFF again, i tried several times to turn it on permanently, but at the end i gave up.
it turned itself OFF, ON, OFF etc. every minute or so, until the copying ended, then everything was normal again, it stayed ON.
i later did some other copying (6GB), this time using only the normal copy-function with Total-Commander, and the same thing started again, as i was running a background-copy.
a few minutes later when i started another background-copying, this time with a smaller total size, MSE?s realtime protection stayed ON.
so i?m starting to believe that it may have something to do with some form of "Overflow" while copying BIG files / directories.
so keep an eye on the MSE-icon...
could someone else please test this ?
it must be a VERY serious bug if a program really can turn MSE?s realtime-protection OFF !?
This is why it is still in Beta. Please report these errors to MS. I had few problems myself on my test machine and I did report them.
Good luck
I have installed McAfee Total Protection and Prevx CSI on my new Windows 7 (64bit)PC.Is it safe to install Microsoft Security Essentials on the same PC
It is not advisable to have two different anti virus programmes on the same machine, so I would advise against it.
2 more repliesmicrosoft security essentials have you tried it?,pal said its good,so have took the leap, and uninstalled super anti spyware, and avg 9,which seemed to hog like norton did,,,on testing all night,pc runs quicker ,check it out i knew nothing about it till i was told,
Well done so what are you using for your Anti-Spyware program if you got rid of Superantispyware.
10 more repliesHi is this software from Microsoft "microsoft security essentials" a stand alone or should you use is alongside i.e AVG/Kaspersky.Thanks.
You cannot use with another Antivirus program EG Avast / AVG but you can use along side another malware program like Mbam Adaware or Spybot.
2 more repliesI assume this is a virus of some sort.
A red dialog box appeared stating Microsoft Security Essential Alert detected potential threats appeared on my computer. I closed it and came here to find out what to do.
So, what do I do?
This is a PC running Vista. I do have Avast running and up to date.
Thanks for your help.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a valid anti virus program.See here for screen shots of the program. If that is what you have let it fix the problem if it can and upload a log or any info you can on what it found. Run a boot scan with Avast as well. Post all results.

More repliesI am trying to fix a laptop (Sony Vaio) that has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit running on it.
For some reason when I try to start Microsoft Security Essentials on it I get a pop up that says:
"The operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your System Administrator".
Microsoft Security Essentials was running on this machine before, I'm not sure what has changed, I have booted off the USB and scanned for viruses with a couple of different AV packages. Everything appears to be ok.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Firstly try to run it as an administrator.
and check for Firewall settings (set them to default)
did u use any other antivirus program before ?
if so then first perform a cleanup of system and then try using MSE.
also check for latest updated MSE
hope this helps

After a period of successful beta testing, Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is final! MSE is independently certified by West Coast Labs and is backed by Microsoft's global security response team. Most importantly, MSE is built on the same core security technology used in Microsoft Forefront, the enterprise version for businesses.
MSE is free for personal use and can be downloaded directly from the dedicated Microsoft web site at http://www.microsoft.com/security essentials.
In the event you are replacing a security suite with Microsoft Security Essentials, it will be necessary to install a replacement software firewall or activate the Windows Vista or Windows 7 Firewall. Online Armor Free and Agnitum Outpost Firewall are free for personal use.

Hello All
My MSE is updating permanently is this right? , its been updating for 3 days, even when i shut down and then start up its still updating, is this right? or is there some reason for this?
Thanks
Allan
Allen
MSE is updating current defintions. When you first download it may take time, lets say 30 minutes or so to update. After that intitial update it should update once or twice a day. Each update should take about 2 or 3 minutes. Anything that deviates greatly from the parameters that I have set should be investigated.
MSE is working real time to catch virus, but this is more or less silent, I do not even know that it is happening. The only event that may be noticed is an active scan. Check the schedule and make sure that your active scan is set for quick and only about once a week.
I ditched my paid for KIS 2011 in favour of MSE, mainly because it was causing random BSOD.
Is it just me, or does MSE not do automatic virus updates?
Every now and then I will check for a Windows Update, only to find MSE definitions that need updating.
I have set MSE to do a daily scan. And to check for updates before running a scan.
I have set my Critical Updates and patches etc. to check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.
I have always set my system to do this, because I hate being in the middle of doing something and the popup window "restart now or later" comes up.
I have MSE, it will update automatically
It will come via the windows live update, or through MSE itself.
Windows update checks for updates once a day. If there is a MSE update, it will be updated the next time that Update checks.
hi. when i download MSE it went through to the downloading stages installing stage and the computer crashed.I eventually had it installed.Ran a full scan and somewhere in C system 32 the computer crashed. This happened 4 times.I deleted it and could not redload it.the computer crashed.Trying to download did not succeed 3 times.Norton is installed on this system i do not use it.With thought to this is the cause i ran the norton delete tool.MSE still would not dload.I also had the same dload crash problem with Skype.Since then i have deleted Skype from everywhere. And MSE from all files. Now i have Norton 2010.Strange little world. It dloaded fine installed and runs fine and picked up a couple of cookies mse didnt.I am very interested to know.Is there a gliche in MSE?Is Skype caused by the same gliche?Does Norton cause the crash? Thanks.

For those who are interested in trying it out, the final version is due to be released soon.
Here is some reading.

Lead article on PC Advisor home page says MS have updated MSE to V 2.I tried upgrading mine from within program but says its up to date V is shown as 1.0.2.498.0,Interestingly the link in the article is for V 1.0.2I'm confused is 1.0.2 version 2 was version 1 1.0.1???
Answered my own question. Looks like you have to download new version from MS, rather than update from withinn V1

g'day Oldphil
i have been using msse for a few weeks now with no major drama's, still not 100% confident with it yet but time will tell.i am running it on an xpsp3 os with 740 meg of ram and comodo firewall.every thing seem to run smoothly.i do have back up virus scanners and they haven't picked anything up yet.
Hi all , i have just recently got spyware doctor onto my laptop but i see it says that it also has an anti-virus.I run security essentials and was wondering if it is ok to have the spyware doctor (as it as an anti-virus) running alongside it
cheers joe
Absolutely not. Run only one of the two. Suggest MSE. Spyware Dr. is not too good in my book but can be used for additional scanning. Just make sure you get it out of the startups.
3 more repliesHi all, is anone running the trail version of Microsoft Security Essentials? If so how is it looking and is there a release date yet? Was curious 2 no if MSE scans incoming and outgoing e-mail. Am going to switch from ESET when my subscription runs out end of the month.
MSE scans all downloaded files, which includes email.
first of all thanks for one of the best furoms out there, i've been through a few and this is by far the best/
could be a simple question, but i could not afirm it.
does "mse" scan snd protect in coming emails ?
and is there any reason to use any other av program ?
thanks again to all of you who have helped in the past, and of course in the future.
No, it does not.
BUT, it will scan all the emails when it does a scan.
Quote:
There's no need to scan email, only attachments and that is done by all modern antimalware programs as the files are written to the PC file system.
All of the major AV vendors have been telling their customers for several years now that 'email scanning' is no longer necessary, it's a holdover from the early days of AV programs when Microsoft hadn't yet created the API (Application Programming Interface) sets that allow the AV programs to scan a file before any user access (including email programs) is allowed.
have recently read very good reviews for this free security suit from microsoft. what i would like to know, is it compatable with avg. would welcome any opinions. thanks.
No - you need to have one or the other - never a good idea to have two anti-virus programs running together.

Microsoft Security Essentials - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stable release 4 months ago.
I have windows 7 Professional. I used to have windows live one care. Windows 7 does not recognize windows live care so I use Microsoft Security Essentials.
With windows live one care all of my computers and printers could be shared, but with windows security essentials this is not possible.
Does anyone know how to get my different computers and printers to share on windows 7 with microsoft security essentials?
Put them in the safe workgroup if you are sharing with XP and use gigabit ethernet via Cat 5e cables for speed.

I may have a issue with MSE i just finished a fresh build an installed windows 7 x64 it has been up for about a 2 weeks now, the install went smooth with no runs drips or errors till i installed MSE.
Right after installing MSE i updated the virus def's manually then did a full scan wich at the i figured that the defs were up to date since they were no flags she was runnin in the green.
Followed by updating defender an installing the latest ATI drivers an control center and finally running windows update installing everything that windows recomended except the 34 language packs.
Now i did notice that MSE virus def's did update on auto the version number changed though it was below what was listed for download my protection status changed for a week now its been in a amber state as of tonight my defs version is 1.71.90.0 most updates have been manual an i have manually ran full scans after updates as well as let MSE do scheduled scans.
According to the Malware protection center 1.71.90.0 are the latest defs , i just finnished a full system scan an reboot an windows update an MSE still are flagging that the defs are out of date and that im potentialy un protected.
My scheduled scan settings are daily, around 2:00am,full scan.
default action settings are all recomended an the tic box checked.
real time protection all tic boxes are checked.
No excluded files & locations ,file types ,and file processes are listed.
Tic boxes under advanced are all checked.

Installing MSE automatically overrides and disables Windows Defender. It takes over for it. If you have manually re enabled Win Defender, go back and disable it.
9 more repliesHi all, what a great site this is. Hard to beleive the knowledge that is floating around in this forum. To my point, I installed Microsoft security essential recently and now I want to run a malware scan on my pc. To run the scan it is recommended to disable any and all live protection you have on your pc. I have poked around trying to see how to disable MS Security Essential but no luck, only option is to uninstall for the scan and then reinstall MS Security Essential. So, is there a way to disable this software or do I just uninstall it?
Thank for your help in advance!
Not sure why you'd want to disable it, but there are instructions on temporarily doing so here.
