Messed up my Permission Settings on Vistax32

Question: Messed up my Permission Settings on Vistax32

Is there a way I can restore the default permission settings on a hard drive. I have two drives my master which Vista runs on, and a secondary drive, with all my audio and video files I use for all my editing, plus my photos and music. I was messing around with the premission settings, and I am set as an Adminstrator, but now all my files are not accessible, I have tried to do a million things but I have to click so many windows just get to a file to use. Is there anything I can do to get back to the orignal settings!

Thanks a ton!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Messed up my Permission Settings on Vistax32

Try using system restore to reset the settings. If not, create a new user account with administrator priveleges and delete the old one.

Hi Ewa,

Hi, i have this problem that i cannot solve. i know why it happened but i was kinda trying stuff without really knowing what i was doing, so now i turn to this forum cause i tried all i could think/find and i still cant solve my mistake.

I had two HD,

C: with XP pro sp3 and linux (dual boot)
D: formated in ntfs with all extra data (songs, video, reports, receipt etc..)

When i had these two working normally, i needed to restrict the access of the second HD (the D:) to only one computer on the network so i messed around with the permission. I ended up deleting the whole list;

it was looking like this (under the security tab of the HD properties)

"User" X\username"

So i deleted these, it gave me problems , then i found how to re-take owner ship. but i only re-added

"User" X\username

i could then again access my files on the D: . but i still couldnt share my files as i wanted for some reason. so i decided to re-install windows...big mistake!!

I formated the C:, re-installed windows on it, no problem with that. But now i see the second HD in windows explorer as RAW and access is denied. Meaning the HD is detected and listed there, but the used space and total space amount is not showing, if i click properties, instead of NTFS its says RAW. If i try to open it to explore the content, i get an access denied message.

I tryied chkdsk it did some things (looked like it w... Read more

I am trying to set my folder permission settings on XP Pro. If I take away someones ability to delete they can no longer rename a folder. How do I enable someone to create and rename both folders and files, but not delete them. Thanks.

Answer:Folder permission settings.

I have these basics down.

It seems that when a new file is renamed, the phrase "New Folder" is actually being deleted, thereby requiring "Deletion" capability. But a user can also delete anything else with this permission, which is bad news. Is there away around this bug?

While my WD Portable External Hard Drive was connected to my work computer, I changed the permissions on a particular folder so that only I had access to it. (I was lending it to someone else but didn't want then to have access to this particular folder).

2 hours later I was told my services were no longer required, pack up all my things and leave. Unfortunately, I forgot to reset the permissions before I left, and now when I try to access the folder on my home PC, I get 'Access Denied'.

I realise it was stupid to mess about with the permissions (especially when I don't know that much about them), but is there anyway to take ownership of this folder to gain access to the contents?

Both work and home PC are XP. Work is 64 bit. Home is 32 bit. Permissions were set up on work PCs, but not on home.
And no, there's no chance of me gaining access to my work PC again.

I'm not griping this time!

I've set up a limited account on my computer, and when I was testing it out, I noticed that I was able to manipulate the settings to the anti-virus program that's installed. How do I, using my administrator account, prevent the limited account from messing with it? I've hidden as many folders as possible, but the task bar icon is still visible and I can't hide it. And I can't right-click the task bar icon and mess with the security settings that way.

Answer:User account permission settings

The problem is more with your Internet Security software than with Vista. If you make the files for the Internet Security software inaccessible to a limited user - that software might not work properly for that user. Most Internet Security software (i.e. Norton, McAfee) allows you to install parental controls and give you the ability to control WHAT Windows users can or cannot do (including the manipulation of the software's settings).

What Internet Security Software are you using? Have you installed parental controls? Did you install the software while logged in as "Administrator"?

Let me know and I can probably offer more assistance.

Would there be a listing of default settings so I can recheck the 3 categories and boxes within them to original. "System", "My Name With email address", and "Administrators"?

Hey guys, well this is my last resort so hopefully someone can help me.

On boot of my machine I started getting the blue screen of death.

I have looked around on a few forums and followed some advice, for instance trying to boot to safe mode, trying system repair, system restore, nothing has worked. I tried putting in the vista cd but still nothing is working. I did manage to get to the vista cd menu a few minutes ago.

I tried to launch repair. It said that it had found a problem with my OS and was going to repair and restart. however its just went onto a black screen saying BOOTMGR missing or something.

Any ideas? Im pulling my hair out! Got loads of emails and things that i need for my business.

Answer:Emachines. Vistax32 Wont Boot

If Bootmgr is missing (and that's the root of the problem), then perhaps the following will help:

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps: (you need a Vista Installation Disk to do this)

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note If rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup issue, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. By doing this, you make sure that the BCD is completely rebuilt. To do this, type the following commands at the Windows RE command prompt:
 bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
 c:
 cd boot
 attrib bcd -s -h -r
 ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd

Good luck and I hope this helps! If not, then the issue isn't simply a missing Bootmgr. Something else is wrong. Please post the EXACT and entire BSOD message word-for-word as that may help us identify the cause since it could be a whole lot of things and that may help us narrow it down a bit.

I recently re-installed Windows 7 and all of a sudden I was having access denied problems which had never occurred before.
I have managed to fix all of these apart from one:-
When I try to change the icon via the properties of a desktop item I get:-
"you will need to provide administrator permission to change these settings"
I am the only user of the PC and my account is an administrator account.

As I said, I never had this problem prior to the re-install.
I have searched and searched but have yet to find any answers or solutions.

Any help or info would be helpful.

I have my OS settings configured not to check for and install updates unless I prompt Windows to do so. I recently manually installed some updates. A few days later I noticed Windows was installing updates upon start up. I checked my update settings and sure enough they were set for everything to check and install updates automatically. What is going on here? I never noticed this kind of behavior with Vista or Windows 7.

Has anyone else noticed this or have a way to truly stop automatic updates?

I have been working with programs such as Blender 3d recently which conflict with my security settings. I have been getting permission denied for saving files and doing other functions in these programs. I found out how to disable the administrator setting by going in command prompt and typing "net user administrator /active no" and how to keep the computer from constantly bringing up warnings asking me to allow a change to my computer by going in user account settings and sliding the slider to zero. It seemed to be working untill I took the slider back up so that I could have some security enabled while on the internet, and then even when I took the slider back down it was still the way it was before, not letting me save my files on some programs and bringing up messages asking me to allow myself to run a program I had clicked on. I tried bringing up the command prompt and re-disabling the administrator setting and also made sure the slider was down all the way, to no effect. I was trying to do a system restore to restore whatever is screwing this up, but an error comes up everytime telling me it can't access a file possibly because of antivirus being on, even though I already turned all the security features off. Any way I could have missed something that I did right the first time but not the second?

I think I've screwed myself up into a corner. I really need help as Google is not bringing up anything that might help.
What happened is I tried to adjust the security setting for my whole external hard disk.
I have the admin rights to my computer and wanted to restrict a user to be able to read and execute only. I right clicked the drive (L:\) and adjusted the EVERYONE group.
What I didn't know was EVERYONE included the admin too. So now I've blocked myself from editing the files and folders in the external. Now I see all accounts have the special permission part unticked.
And if I check the properties of a folder in the hard disk I see an account with the special permission allowed
In a fit of panic I accidentally removed the account with special permission privilege from my hard disk properties so I don't see it when I check the properties of my hard disk but I can see the account when I check the properties for the individual folders.
For awhile I had access denied when I tried to enter the drive but now I can enter but still am restricted (can't delete folders, etc)

How do I rectify this mess I'm in?

Answer:File Permission Settings for External Drive

Through further googling, I've discovered 'taking ownership' so it's all settled now.

Hey there, first time I have encountered this malware. I could not access the internet on the infected computer, hence used my families laptop to download ComboFix (one of the first steps taken in a similar vista security thread here), transferred the programme to the infected computer, renamed it to username123.exe and ran it to great success (so i think.. xD) I have copied the log file over to the laptop (since i noticed the steps did not end at combofix for this other user).

If there is anything else I must do to ensure the safety of my computer please let me know! I am very foreign as far as malware/viruses are concerned (im certain should my pc ever meet me in the said afterlife...) and would love your help on securing it.

I know how to share the folder if I use option “Everyone” Under Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing > Permissions > Add > Everyone ,,,,,,and I know how to use the option “Public Folder” which is located %SystemDrive%\User\Public

With “Everyone” option PC4 and PC5 would be able to get access to the shared folder
Now my question if I do not want to use "Everyone" option , I have to create additional three local accounts on the server which are ( username : forum1,password : work1 ) and ( username: forum2, password:work2 ) and ( username: forum3, password:work3 )

Those username then will be able to login to the server which I do not want that to happen. Is this what suppose to be in such scenario ?

Dear Forum,

I am currently trying to move files and folders to my 1TB External Hard Drive (Seagate) - for reasons known to some members of this forum.

I am gaining the message 'File Access Denied' when I move mostly Adobe files to my external hard drive.

I am going to try and go through and see if I have taken the steps on taking Ownership - incorrectly and I do not know how to fix it.

The recycle bin has an error on it as I took the permission on the folder on the external hard drive 'It says that is corrupt'.

I am a total mess and unsure about the settings.

As title.

I've begun to use TeraCopy, which is much better than the stupid Win7 copy handler. There's just one problem:

When TeraCopy moves a file from a user-owned folder to a public folder, it retains folder's user-level permissions. I can manually give access to Everyone for this folder, but it is very annoying.

So, I'm looking for a way to easily remove a folder's own permission settings and make it use only inherited permissions.

I'd like a brief tutorial, or a link to a page where I might be able to accomplish a little more restrictive environment. I understand the basic logic for what I want to accomplish, yet I can't get it to work. Here's my scenario:

Through Active Directory, I want to set a global group of users with restricted access to certain settings and programs, namely Remote Desktop Connection (I had a separate thread that dealt with comp. sci. students using the RDC to bypass the web filter). I can go around each computer and disable the RDC remotely, but I'd like to set it up to where every account name takes on the security/permission settings.

As a note: At my college, the accounts are set up to where even the desktop background is reset after logout. We have a tiny problem with kids changing the mouse cursors and backgrounds here. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

I have been going nuts with this. For the past 3 days I have been getting messages saying I do not have permission to write in directories where I am listed as the owner. I have ensured that the users MyuserID, Administrators, and SYSTEM all have Full control over the directory. I have also made sure that the parent directories also give these users full control. I could live with this and just escalate my privileges each time I create a file. However I run some apps that need to write into some of these directories and they cant. I have checked that the application process is run under my userID and has the need permission, however it still can not write to these directories.

Is this a known bug that has recently been created? Is there some new Group or User that needs to be given permission to modify the directory. This seems to be a problem on some machines, but not others. Any help would be much appreciated. Since this just started without any changes by me, I am assuming that some Windows update is the cause.

Have you check your Update history. Are any updates failing?

While I can't comment on known bug, others may have more info, do you have restore points enabled? If so would you consider invoking system restore as you seem to have a handle on when it started.

Obviously updates will simply re-initiate. You may consider changing what updates you receive. Make it just windows and do not included other products (ie., drivers). This will rule out drivers or "Other" patches.

Do you use any software to Image your OS / Data? If not, a number of individuals on this forum recommend Macrium Reflect. You may also want to review the tutorial section. Macrium is free to home users. It is easy to use and can quickly get you back to a known working system.

The network environment is a Workgroup consisting of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 Pro, and Windows XP Pro.

My example:
I have enabled Guest account in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer.
I have created a new folder "guestshare" in c: and use Share with menu to add Guest with Read/Write Permission Level.

When I try to map it in the Windows XP Pro machine thru Map Network Drive function under Tools menu, I won't see that share using the Browse button. However, I can type the UNC path and map it.

If I turned off the Password Protected Sharing in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, I will see that share using the Browse button and able to map it. What is the reason for this behavior?

I wonder whether the following settings in Advanced sharing settings of Windows Server 2008 R2 can affect mapping:

File and printer sharing
Public folder sharing

Since mapping a drive requires authentication, is there any settings in User Right Assignments and Security Options of Local Policy that can affect mapping? For example, I wonder about the following settings:

User Right Assignments
Access the computer from the network
Allow log on locally
Deny access to this computer from the network
Deny log on locally

Security Options
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only
Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously
Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts

Also, does the setting of Guest account in the Win... Read more

Hey guys,

Having a problem with Exchange 2010.

I've created a distribution group named All Staff, in which I have placed all the revelant staff in our school. When I try to share a calendar with the group I get the error message
"Calendar sharing is not available with the following contacts because of permission settings on your network."

I am able to share the calendar with individuals but this really isn't efficient.

The distribution group got the email [email protected] upon creating it.

Other information:
-Using Windows Server 2008 R2
-Client is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
-Accessing mail through Outlook Web Access

Thanks in advance and do ask for any other information you deem necessary.

Here's the problem.'s what happened.-- I changed the DPI from 96 (Default) to a custom setting, I recall it being 18%, restarted, couldn't see a damn thing (spent 20 minutes trying to find the DPI setting menu), and then I reverted back to my original 96 DPI.-- Unfortunately, my original DPI does not look like the opriginal DPI I remember. Just a thought, but the simplest way may be to just do a system restore back to before the problem started.

I need help, I have to turn off my nortan to get my msn to sign in and then my email wont recieve or mail and i get the This page cannot be displayed message alot.

Answer:My settings are all messed up

There are so many issues about Norton, that's why I didn't buy it.

Well, I'm not very sure if Norton is the cause of this.. I guess it's a firewall who's causing this... When you turned off or disabled Norton, does this problem happens?

At the first place, I don't know anything about Norton, because, I don't have Norton, that's why the only thing I can suggest to you is to uninstall Norton and install AVG7, or Avast!, that's only my opinion.

Hi vivi,

At first glance, my guess would be the device driver of your video card is corrupt, or the incorrect driver is loaded... like standard vga. Right click on "My Computer" and select properties. This opens the system properties window. Click the hardware tab, and then click on the device manager button. This should open a list of things installed in your computer. First look to see if you see any problems... yellow exclaimation marks, or red X's. About 3 items down that list you should see your video adapter listed. Make sure the driver matches what you have installed. If it doesn't, you need to find the driver on the net, locate a driver cd you may have, or let us know what type of video adapter you have - and I will look it up.

I would suggest visiting the makers site, or a driver site like

Good luck vivi!

My friends Dad can't get his Lexmark all in one printer scanner working on his PC since he upgraded to Vista from XP.

I downloaded the latest drivers (vista ones) from the lexmark website (cjb3500-4500en.ex)

I uninstalled the old drivers and then installed the new ones but that didn't work. I then tried installing them manually in device driver and I can manage to get the PC to recognize the printer, BUT it says the "PRINTER INTERFACE" is not installed, and comes up with a yellow exclamation mark.

I have put in the original driver cd, directed device manager to the new D/L drivers but I cannot get it to recognize this.

Here is a detailed device manager error :

Windows detected a new device attached to your computer, but could not find the driver software it needs to make the device usable. Each device manufacturer typically includes driver software of a CD that comes with the device, or as a download from its website. The hardware ID of your device is USB\VID_043D&PID_010D&REV_0001&MI_01.

Architecture: x86
Hardware Id: USB\VID_043D&PID_010D&REV_0001&MI_01

I am at a loss and have spent hours on this already, I hope somebody can help!

Answer:Lexmark 3500-4500 printer trouble in VISTAx32

If the drivers are the correct one's for the device and OS, then it's likely that there's a hardware problem.

The system recognizes the printer correctly (USB\VID_043D&PID_010D = Lexmark 3500-4500 series) - so the only thing left is either hardware, cables, or connection issues.

Try another cable and ensure that the USB that plugs into the printer is properly seated (I had a high quality cable that was too large to go in the hole in my printer - so I had to whittle it down with a knife to make it fit).

Apologies if this topic has previously been discussed, but my search didn't yield helpful results.

In attempting (unsuccessfully) to install a citrix plugin for remote desktop, I'm discovering that advanced security settings for Program Files are screwed up, but I am unable to adjust them. I am currently logged in as administrator and user account control settings are set to "never notify". Please see the attached screenshot. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Permission / Advanced Security Settings issue with Program Files

What is the image you posted supposed to show? I don't see anything wrong. It's normal for Trusted Install to own the operating system directory trees like Program Files, Program Data, Windows, etc.

Your looks the same as mine:

Are you logged in as the normally hidden Administrator account or are you logged in as an Administrator level account?

I have successfully configured my server to allow SSH connections using OpenSSH. I'm able to log in as an administrator and browse files by command line.

When I don't use UNC for my home directories (as I do with my domain under user accounts so I have a home directory) I am able to browse files within Filezilla.

The problem is that I *cannot* log into the SFTP site with an account if it does not have administrative rights. Is there a specific right that I need to grant to that user account using ntrights.exe? I'm baffled. So close, yet still so insecure.

I'm tempted to just use FTPS with Serv-U or something. Can't remember if that will run as a service.

Oh, I'm using Windows 2003, Enterprise Edition (MSDNAA)

Thanks in advance, and if you require any additional information, please let me know!

My next step will to be able to figure out how to apply virtual directories for my users.

Edit: Oh, and yes, the users do have permission to access their home directories.

Yes there is a way to reset the network stack, flush the DNS, release/renew the IP and reset winsock. You can just save the file below, unzip the file and run it until you machine reboots which will be automatic.

If you are still having problems please post a screen shot of your ipconfig/all and I will have a look at it.

Ok so my 2wire router has been acting up so I went ahead & purchased a new one( Medialink
Wireless-N Broadband router)
**First question~can I use this router if I don't have an external modem? Wireless-N router has it built in right?

SO I was thinking I was going to just hook my new router up like the 2wire using this filter that hooks into the wall jack. I think some of the settings were off and it wasn't connecting to the internet. So then I took it upon myself to get into the Control Panel & well........whoopsy
**It would show the name of the home group and have a perfect signal, but said no Internet access.
**It wouldn't take my security key either & if it looked like it was going to it would say come back & say "possible security mismatch"
Seemed like it just wasn't going to happen so I'd just come back to it. When I hooked my 2wire back up it wouldn't connect to the Internet. In some sort of Christmas miracle I got it to pick up the WiFi again. Which basically means I have prob screwed my settings up more by clicking around so much.

This morning computer wasn't picking up WiFi again and wasn't even connecting with the Ethernet cable. "No Internet Access" I left it for a few hours...came back and the Ethernet was suddenly working again.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Any thoughts are very much appreciated!!

Hi there,

I must have recently fiddled with some setting or other in Windows XP.

Unfortunately this seems to have changed how folders are viewed !

(Please see screenshots 1 & 2 sent as attachments)

These screenshots are before and after shots

As you can see… screenshot 1, (before) has a kind of blue taskbar with things that might be useful to do.

However on screenshot 2, (after) the blue taskbar has disappeared !!!

Another thing is…. in the My pictures folder, as you can see, I used to be able to get the pictures running as a filmstrip (see screenshot 1 – before)

Now the best I can get are thumbnail shots (see screenshot 2 – after)

I have tried to change the setting by going into the view tab however the filmstrip option is not there.

This is very frustrating

Please help

Regards Richard Milner.

O-k. So I messed w/ the security settings on my notebook because unsavory characters were logging on w/ it and making me vulnerable to viruses, trojans, etc. (I even had to replace a previous notebook; $1,500 !!!!!!!!!!!!!)

That was, oh, about a year ago. Now, I have a new cable connection (no more dial-up), but Internet Explorer won't let me all. No matter what site I attempt to visit I get: "the page cannot be displayed". I tried to default all my security options but, nothing remedies the problem.

-I can't remember what I did to my laptop. I'm running Windows XP pro, Internet Explorer 6, and my connection is via Comcast digital cable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. -I know that this is a rudimentary problem, and that I am not worthy of so much as my cheap Dell laptop...So please, go easy on me.

Answer:I messed w/ my security settings...

I searched for other threads that may address this problem, and found one where somebody suggested using Firefox as a browser. This works, but I would still like to use Internet Explorer at some point.

Thanx in advance for any help.

About two days ago I needed to restart my computer and that is when I noticed that a malicious virus was blocked and was attempting to change my homepage for my browsers. I decided to download malwarebytes and perform a scan and it found about 10 infections. I then performed a AVG (free software) scan and it found 7 threats all of them different. (1 was hacker tool, another was cookie type infection, so on). After going into safe mode and running a malware scan it found 5 more infections. Now I am running in regular windows mode but I am still noticing that my browser is being messed with and now Internet explorer will not open to certain pages. Google chrome is working just fine but when I change my homepage to, something changes it back to search I also noticed that at various times (seems to be random) that music will start to play with no applications open and sometimes it's not music but advertisements. I am afraid that my browser has been hacked and that my passwords, files on my computer might be at risk. I would appreciate any help that I can get. Thank you in advance.

Can anyone help? Do i have a virus? can i set the settings back to normal?

Answer:Solved: settings messed up

Are you able to do an System restore? to a time before all of this has happend? Search 'System Restore' in the Windows Xp search and see if it can.

If you have no data needed on the computer, if you do then Burn or save on USB stick. Also another way would be to Reinstall your windows, only if you still have your Windows XP disc and The Windows Activation Key which should be on a sticker somewhere on your computer.

I am unaware of what could have happened for the settings to be changed? has anybody played around with the computer ? etc.

I lent my computer to a friend a couple weeks ago.
I wanted to keep some folders private, so I was messing around trying different alternatives.
Finally settled on just putting them on a separate USB key, but that left a mess behind.

What I'm talking about: I was in a place of admin/user powers, and I deleted a bunch of them. Now, for instance, I can't download things to many folders, especially my big D disk. To extract files, to transfer files, I need to always click that another window of admin 'yes, I confirm'.

Where can I find those abilities I foolishly deleted? How can I reset them back to normal?
I know I didn't leave much info, but I'm sure to a Win10 expert it'll make sense. I made for instance - 'Users can not use this disk', something like that.

Thank you!

I think I have some sort of trojandownloader(s) as there are pop-ups for false anti-spyware/malware stemming from icons on my taskbar (little stop/ caution signs), but it also messed with my settings. My clock now reads hh:mm:ss:VIRUS ALERT! I looked up how to reset this but it reverted on restart, my start menu was almost completely disabled, and I still can't figure out how to get the all programs menu to reappear (I already went to folder options>show hidden files, didn't work). I managed to get rid of portions of it (I managed to get MSAntivirus off my taskbar but it still appeared in the hijackthis log: MSA.exe), and repair some settings, but I'm wondering if there is a removal tool or something that will revert it/them instead of having to do it all manually. It/they also corrupted system restore, deleting all my previous restore points so that was not an option. I'm tempted to start disabling things on hijackthis, but I want to make sure I'm reading it right before I mess with it. I stupidly messed around with the security settings on my Western Digital external HDD. I tried to change the permissions for CREATOR OWNER, but received the following messages:

So I pressed cancel and received the following message:

Afterwards, the permissions for CREATOR OWNER were all unchecked (previously, they were all checked):

And in Advanced Security Settings, the permissions is listed as "Special" apply to "Subfolder and files only" instead of "Full Control" apply to "This folder, subfolder and files" :

I tried to restore the previous permissions for CREATOR OWNER by 1.) Re-checking the permissions boxes and 2.) going to Advanced Security Settings and changing the permissions to apply to “This folder, subfolder, and files” instead of just “This subfolder and files only.”

However, when I click ok, I receive the same “access denied” messages above and my changes are not kept.

Eventually, I THINK I was able to give back full control to CREATOR OWNER by making it the “owner.” I still received the “access denied” messages, but this time, my changes stuck and CREATOR OWNER was once again listed as having full control (all boxes were checked) and the permissions were listed as "Full control" apply to “This folder, subfolder, and files.”

However, the "owner" is still listed as CREATOR OWNER:

Previously, the owner listed was a string of numbers and letters (I try typing this string in... Read more

I believed System Restore screwed up some settings on a work pc.

This is what i did. Firstly, i changed the appearance of XP Pro by right clicking my computer -> properties -> advanced tab -> settings -> adjust for best appearance. (Originally the theme was set to Windows classic) i changed the settings, and all was fine...then i wanted to return Windows classic theme view) but, instead of going to the display properties to revert back to Windows classic, i did a system restore to a few hours prior.

Once i restored the system, only a few desktop items appeared and all the settings for thunderbird, firefox etc were at a default state. Even the wallpaper got removed. Everything has to be reconfigured. I searched for existing files and found them, so sounds like the files are ok, but how can i restore the system?? The hd is partitioned into two drives. OS and Data.

Hello everyone. I wasn't sure where to put this, so please forgive me if it doesn't belong here. Anyway, somehow my laptop display settings got all messed up. Somehow, everything turned sideways, so I have to tip my laptop up onto the side to look at everything properly. My resolution has been changed to 768 x 1024, and I can't change it in the "Settings" tab in the Display Properties.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks in advance, and your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Laptop display settings all messed up?

First of all, this kind of thread would go in the Audio/Video Section.... Second, what OS do you have? Third, what's your videocard (so we know the controls you may use)?

Hi! So my settings and files get messed up every time I use my computer after unplugging it (unplugging = while computer is off). When I start it up, I get this:Please enter SETUP to recover BIOS setting Press F1 to run SETUP Press F2 to load default values and continue I press F2 (I have no idea what anything in the setup means, I'm an idiot on computers) and I can use it normally except there are a bunch of visual changes (theme, other things) and missing files, or at least I think so; all games I've tried won't start or will start and have many things missing and not work. After Googling this a bit it seems like my battery is failing and I need to get a new one. I can do that, but meanwhile how do I get back my things? When this has happened before I just did a system restore, but this time there aren't any restore points so I guess I'm stuck. One time I remember finding something that worked, it was typing something in the command prompt but I can't find how to do that anymore... so I'm  here.Is there a topic on here showing how to get specs and what to show?Sorry I'm so difficult lol

Answer:Settings and Files Messed up after Unplug

Please tell us information re the computer and also what operating system you are using? Curious as to why you are "unplugging " your computer? Is this a laptop?truenorth

I wanted to change accounts permissions to different folders and disks and I suppose I broke something else. Everything was ok until I've changed security permissions here:

Now how it looks. It allows me to work with Windows, but... I can't install anything because it is saying that Win is working in safe mode (strange!), security center stopped showing my antyvir (Avira Antyvir) and firewall (Zonealarm) status saying that I don't have them (earlier security center detects both without any problem) and everything is working rather strange.

If I remove NETWORK SERVICE from security perm. then Win is loading 2 minutes, without audio, taskbar, can't copy and paste and many many more.

It is even more strange because I managed to repair system week ago and it was working without NETWORK SERVICE, but today it broke again...

How to repair it?

Answer:Solved: I've messed up security settings

Where did you change the settings? The image gives no information about what files and folders you changed.

Hi, sometimes it might occur, that suddenly the display's contrast setting is messed up. Contrast is being increased, so many content gets really unreadable, although settings stay at the very same value. This is really strange as it does not vanish until next reboot and can't be turned of otherwise ( Or more precise: I don't know how). I hope you can help me with this issue Thanks in advance. Daniel

Answer:x201: Contrast Settings Messed Up

Take a look at this thread. It looks like you might have the same problem, but it doesn't go away until reboot.

So I really messed up here.It would be great if you guys could help.I have a Dell Studio XPS with Windows Vista hooked up to a Samsung 32inch 720p HD TV.I was trying to play Braid. When I booted the game, it briefly showed the game but then my screen went blank and my TV displayed the message (not supported mode)I figured the resolution was off and tried playing with the display settings to try to fix it. I accidentally upped the refresh rate of my monitor and then my screen went blank and I could not see or change anything.Booted in safe mode to try to fix it, but then upped the resolution in safe mode and the screen went blank again. Now if I try to boot in safe mode my monitor does not display anything.I can boot setup, but it seems that it is.Is there any way to change display settings in setup or any other way to fix this? Thanks

Answer:Messed up desktop Display settings

Just boot to 'VGA' mode (also under the F8 menu)Once the computer starts up, then remove the Video driver from Device Manager, and then restart to Normal Mode.Allow normal mode to re-install the Video driver, then restart. All should be good after that

I ran combofix the other day and it screwed up my time settings. The clock is in the 24 hour format and I can't change it back. I have tried to change it by rt. click then adjust date and time but there is nothing there to change it. I tried to put P.M. next to it, and I went to the control panel and tried it there. No luck. Since I got Conbofix from this website I figured you may be able to help.

Hi there,

I must have recently fiddled with some setting or other in Windows XP.

Unfortunately this seems to have changed how folders are viewed !

(Please see screenshots 1 & 2 sent as attachments)

These screenshots are before and after shots

As you can see? screenshot 1, (before) has a kind of blue taskbar with things that might be useful to do.

However on screenshot 2, (after) the blue taskbar has disappeared !!!

Another thing is?. in the My pictures folder, as you can see, I used to be able to get the pictures running as a filmstrip (see screenshot 1 ? before)

Now the best I can get are thumbnail shots (see screenshot 2 ? after)

I have tried to change the setting by going into the view tab however the filmstrip option is not there.

This is very frustrating

Please help

Regards Richard Milner.

I am working on a friend's computer and I did a clean install of Windows XP pro. Before that I did the transfer files and settings but used the one from the computer that currently had XP Home SP2 on it. Now there is a message that says something about migration and that it can't transfer the files in. What do I do to get his files transfered?

I suppose I could put XP Home back on it and transfer the files back, then do the transfer using the XP pro cd like I was supposed to. Then I could reload XP Pro. Ideas?

Was hijacked with something that took over the computer and said I needed to repair - it even forced a chkdisk to come up with major errors. Malawares, AVG, Windows Defender Offline gave me back control of the pc - but everything was gone from the start menu, favorites... and ran very slow. After days of messing around I realized that some directories in the \docs and settings directory were hidden. I unhid them so things sort of work. But there are some things still locked out - Windows Update just fails, I created a limited user on my machine, and it is not granted access to run any installed programs, and as you can see from the log there is still lots of bad stuff.
I would really appreciate any help. I will not make any changes to the system without your advice.

I tried to set up a network between my laptop and my PC, and then gave up after a few failed attempts. I then tried to directly connect to the internet with my laptop, which then didn't work, even though the modem was plugged in correctly. hi everyone,

I cannot edit the properties pannel for 'Application system' (named: COMSysApp) in COM+ Application folder, in Local computer, in Components services.
My OS is a WIN 7 Home premium Service pack 1, 64 bit .

-My question is how to make editable this pannel.-

In other words, most of tabs for thise pannel are shown in greyed-out.
COM+ applications are vital for the security of all system, so I need to manage those.

Could you show me how resolve this issue, by Services component tool and with Regedit?
I'm the administrator of Pc and I run all administrative tools as Administrator.

Is it possible the solution is about user priviliges, maybe in Regedit or what else?

I need to manage ALL services on my PC for security.

(Moreover, I tried to close manually, by Win firewall, the ports for the services in grey out, but it's impossible to do. Seems the firewall rules are ineffecctive. On network
monitor, indeed, in the section of listening port, on descriprion appears something like that: impossible to firwalled it.

I'm quitly worried about this.

I read somewhere, the solution it could be running as System in my Pc but for Home Edition I cannot understand how to do that.)

Any idea?

hello, this is my first post on this forum. i am in need of some help regarding the windows 7 wireless settings.
a couple of days ago i downloaded the microsoft virtual wifi miniport software to attempt to connect to both my 4g connection on my android via tethering and also my home wifi network, i finished the download and ran the .msi or whatever file but couldnt figure out what exactly to do next, so instead i went online and downloaded net32(i think), i proceeded to install the software and upon completion received an error message telling me that the driver install failed, and that i needed to type "install driver" into the programs command prompt, right as i hit enter, my whole screen went black and i got a blue error box telling me windows shut down to protect my computer, so i restarted, and everything worked fine... up untill last night.

last night i was on and got banned, so i decided i wanted a proxy server type of deal to prevent this from happening, so i downloaded and installed hotspot sheild. the ****ing program never even connected, i went on their website with their live chat with a representative. i asked what i should do since it wasnt connecting to their servers, he ; John, told me to temporarily disable my firewall, so i did. still nothing, so he told me to disable my antivirus, so stopped the malwarebytes proccess tree, still nothing. next, he told me to go into my processes and close out anything that looked like it might block ... Hi ppl. I recently installed a little script freeware program which said it would allow me to change certain settings regarding folder view options.
The program created an undo log when I ran it as it said it would, and as it didn't do what I wanted it to I chose to run the "undo" file and then removed the program.

The problem is that now there are random folder display changes happening on my system. Mainly random pictures on folders in thumnail view, that do not relate to the folder in anyway, and have been somehow used from unrelated folders. This is really annoying. I have run system restore to a month previous, however there is still the folder picture problem, I dont know if the script is still running - but does anyone know how I can restore original folder config. (I have tried control pannel - folder options etc, but it has not fixed the problem)

Thanks alot. C

I had this virus that won't get me to safe mode, so I configured msconfig to do repetitive booting to safe mode. Now how do I change it in recovery console without erasing files in my computer I I hadnt done it already. I did bootcfg /rebuild but it seemed to add unnecessary OS's. Did copy and repair of my files I think it would just replace some of the window files. Did chkdsk. I think that is it. Could you tell me what do in baby steps? Thank you. If I need to reformat I think that is fine, but I have only burnt windows cd's with cd key they have some scratches, but I think they can work. Also please give ne a list of how to reformat if need be.

Calling any fellow tech geeks - I need some help! :(

Installed Win 7 (ultimate) on a refurbished netbook I got. It was working fine before the install now the resolution is 600 x 800 (ech) with no ability to switch to the native resolution of 1028 x 600 (I believe those are the #'s, don't remember by heart but Im sure you'd understand)...

Also wifi access seems to be lost. And even after reinstalling the wireless driver for the card it has, it fails to find internet connections. I read that I could enable the wireless card (incase it was somehow disabled) through BIOS but I have no idea how to do that within the BIOS menu. I've tried many things but the resolution & wireless are killing me... Any ideas how to fix this? Please let me know.

Acer Aspire One netbook / Win 7 OS. No idea what the graphics card is. Shoot maybe I should have downloaded its drivers too... I'll get on that. The website for drivers has sooo many (4 drivers for wireless cards) and I dunno which to install. Im using my sisters laptop & transferring the files to it bc theres no net access at all.

Help? Whoever understands these things. :(

Answer:Help! Installed Win7 (netbook) & settings messed up!

There are more than 20 models in the Aspire One range, so first make sure you select the exact model on the Acer support page.

Then select Windows 7 Ultimate x32 from the drop-down selection box.

That will reduce the choice of drivers considerably and you should see only those which apply to your model for that version of Windows.

I have a Dell inspiron 9200 which is very old about 8 years. Anyway, the laptop screen died a few days ago.

I connected an external monitor and the windows xp booted up fine to the external monitor. So I assume it was making the external monitor as the primary display.

Anyway, I was tweaking the Display settings from the control panel and checked on the extend monitor box and selected monitor 2 and clicked OK.

Now when I boot up windows it doesn't show my main desktop. It shows only the wallpaper background. I tried pressing F8 key which controls the LCD but to no avail. I can't access anything so I can undo what I did.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Solved: I messed up the multiple monitor settings

I fixed it myself. Before I was pressing F8 only. This time I press Fn + F8 at the same time and I got my main desktop back. Very happy person.

Now I can backup my data and bookmarks and get ready to buy a new laptop.

I went into my computer's BIOS settings to check a few things. The only thing I changed was the performance settings. There were 3 options- power saving, normal, optimal...something like that. The default was power saving. I changed it to optimal to see what changes it would make. After I saved the changes and restarted the computer, the display messed up. The screen now displays too big and not all of it fits on my screen at my default resolution of 1920x1080, and switching to other resolutions via the display options in control panel does not help much and is not a solution.
Call me computer illiterate, but I do not understand how changing that setting in BIOS messes up my resolution, AND WON'T FIX even after I changed the performance settings back to 'power save' and restarted. Google has not been helpful either; when I try looking it up I cannot find anyone else having the same particular problem I am having. (display problems maybe, but not the same case I have)
I've also tried reinstalling my graphics drivers since I heard that can fix some display problems, but that did nothing, and fiddling with the display options within the GPU interface menu didn't yield anything either.
Can anyone tell me where the problem lies, and what needs to be done to resolve this? I did notice that windows was installing drivers after the display messed up and I logged in, but I'm not sure what those drivers were, and, other than that, I've no idea as to what's caused this...

Hello Everyone,

I have to post this thread from my Win 7 machine because my regular Win 10 machine has the Black Screen Of Death, or at the very least it's unresponsive and I don't know how to proceed.

I allowed Microsoft to perform the latest Win 10 Update, which seems to have taken a long time. When the Update finished, I noticed that many of my settings had been changed -- mostly font issues. I have had this problem before and it drives me crazy because it's a real pain to get the original font settings restored.

I tried making some font changes thru Control Panel but didn't get a satisfactory fix, so I noticed a 'Customize' choice for the font (I think I chose 125%). When I proceeded I got a response which said I have to sign out first, so I continued -- that was my mistake! I ended up with a screen that had some kind of shoreline image looking out from a sea cave and asking me for what I think was a Password. I could not remember what my password (if any) was. After a few tries I got frustrated and did a Hard Shutdown. I tried powering up but now although the machine seems to be running I only get a black screen. I tried powering up many times using various Function keys (hoping to boot up into Safe Mode) but with no response.

This is very annoying and I do not have any other ideas. I need this Win 10 machine because I have a lot of stuff to do on it. Can someone please offer some thoughts?

Many Thanks.

new user. hope i'm posting according to rules. I wanted to change windows 7 (64 bit) security properties and change permissions on the document and settings folder that denied me access. so i went in and messed with everyone, SYSTEM, and Administrators.I can't even tell you which permissions i tried to allow, but SYSTEM at this point has no allow/deny arrows (except a grayed out special permissions check mark); everyone has black ALLOW ARROWS on everything but special permissions is grayed out on DENY; and administrators has all ALLOW BLACK ARROWS on everything but special permissions which has no arrow on allow or deny.

UPSHOT PROBLEM: there's a dialog box that won't close:
it says: (ERROR APPLYING SECURITY) An error occurred while applying security information to: C:\Documents and Setttings. Access is denied.
it has a continue and a cancel button. When i click the cancel button, this dialog pops up: (WINDOWS SECURITY) Stopping the pro9pagation of permission settings leads to an inconsistent state, in which some objects have the settings but others don't. If you made the change by mistake, you should apply the correct change immediately to achieve a consistent state. when i press, OK, the above box pops up again and i can't get out of either error box or Documents and Settings Properties.

Please help.

also, the lock on the documents and settings folder disappeared and now folder looks like it's a shortcut.

Answer:Messed with Documents and Settings Properties/Permissions. Help.

You are going to get varying advice on this, but I can tell you from experience that what you have done can't be fixed. YOU WILL have to reinstall Windows to get back to a normal, secure installation. There simply is no other way.

You DO NOT need access to Documents and Settings because it is no longer used It is just a pointer to the C:\USERS folder so that older programs continue to function. Don't mess with permissions on folders unless you personally created that folder.

Hi all,

I'm about at my wit's end with this so hopefully someone can shed a little light on it.

Last week, Windows Update installed a new update, and all of a sudden, the gamma on my monitor was much brighter than what I had been working with. The color settings on my computer are critical to my work, so even just a small gamma change is not something I can live with. I went into the Nvidia control panel to try to change it back, but every time I would try to make any alteration, it would reset back to the messed up setting. This is even before I ever hit Apply. I would make a change and *immediately* it would revert back to the messed up settings. The exact same thing happened whenever I'd try to alter the color settings through the Windows Control Panel. I tried altering the color using the monitor settings but that just doesn't even come close to having the same effect as the software.

The next day Nvidia came out with a driver update and then everything went back to normal. Then the very next day after that Windows came out with another update and I was back to my messed up settings.

I've been scouring the internet and there appears to be a history of Nvidia/Windows 10 Updates issues, but none of the solutions thus far have worked for me. I've completely uninstalled everything Nvidia. I've uninstalled the most recent two Windows Updates, but I'm still not able to get my color settings back and my patience is starting to wear thin. I feel like the only thing I haven't ... Read more

First of all there is a wierd black frame around my monitor and I can't connect to internett because my computer doesn't detect my network card neither my graphics and maybe other stuff please help!!

Answer:Just restored my computer to factory settings now it's all messed up!

Please post make, model and actual OS: is it Windows 7 Home Premium, Pro or other?
Is this an original Windows 7 computer or was it an upgrade from XP or Vista?
What is the reason you restored the computer to factory settings?
How did you restore it to factory settings?
You mentioned
--- "a wierd black frame around my monitor"
------ is this something new upon doing the factory restore or was their a similar problem before?
--- "I can't connect to internett because my computer doesn't detect my network card"
------ A USB Internet adapter could be helpful to get connected
--- "neither my graphics"
------ We'll need more information on what this means
------ it's possible the black frame around the monitor is related to this item
--- "maybe other stuff"
------ we'll need more descriptive information to sort this one out
Troubleshooting procedures for those items will need to be taken into account but I think it's a good idea to know the basics of the above questions
