I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Thanks Nigel, I'll have a good look later but it's much appreciated.

I had a previous topic
This is the backstory: Had the 2012 Security Virus and now I have it removed. Apparently a rootkit was thrown in there as well. I used TDSS to remove that this morning. I think that I have the redirect issue fixed now. My only problem now is not being able to re-enable Windows Defender or firewall. Currently running Security Essentials because we took a friend's advice and removed MacAfee.
Still getting messages about the printer spooler service not running and still have an empty printers folder.

As you may be aware, there are a number of Microsoft Windows versions which will go out of support during the coming year. We want to help customers avoid the risk of running unsupported products in their environment.

Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server are approaching 10 years since their launch and both products will go out of support on July 13, 2010.

Windows XP was launched back in 2001. While support for the product will continue, Service Pack 2 will go out of support on July 13, 2010. From that date onwards, Microsoft will no longer support or provide free security updates for Windows XP SP2. Please install the free Service Pack 3 for Windows XP to have the most secure and supported Windows XP platform.

Finally, Windows Vista with no Service Packs installed will end support on April 13 2010. Please install the free Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista to have the most secure and supported Windows Vista platform.

I am wondering if end-of-life Vista is more dangerous than end-of-life XP. My reasoning is that Vista more closely resembles Win 10 than XP. So as MS was saying, attackers may reverse engineer patches meant for recent OS's into exploits that work on the end-of-life one. So it seems to me that Vista looks more dangerous than XP.

Appreciate if people could start to post their respective battery lifes with basic info on the typical battery life, OS, battery configuration, Power profile and screen brightness they are using.  Like to see if Visa or Windows 7 is working better  Battery Life: 4.5 hoursOS: Windows 7 64 bitBattery Config: 6 cell plus slim 3 cell dvd batteryPower profile: balancedScreen Brightness:  max

Answer:X301 Battery Life Comparison between Vista and Windows 7.

you are getting 4.5 hours from 9 cells? that's terrible. it was for that reason i downgraded to xp. actually your numbers match my experience under vista. i thought it was joke when i first booted up the machine and found the 3 cell battery fully charged but only got 90 minutes from it. i won't even say what i think of lenovo's claim of 'up to 3.45 hours' from the 3 cell battery. anyway, it looks like windows 7 is just as bad as vista. under xp with wireless on, bluetooth off, my numbers look like this for 6 cells: Battery Life: 5 hoursOS: xp proBattery Config: 3 cell main + 3 cell bayPower profile: balancedScreen Brightness: -4 i actually just got the 6 cell battery yesterday after owning the machine for almost a year now. i'll post my results for the full 9 cells later, but my initial experience would lead me to believe it is going to be somewhere near 7.5 hours. Message Edited by redwood01 on 06-12-2009 09:15 AM

I was infected with the Vista Security 2012 virus. I have since run Malware, Spybot, CCleaner, Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Fix It. It has disabled my firewall and windows security and network sharing. I am unable to turn them on. I have tried to do the windows repair with my disk, that did not help, sfc/scannow has not helped. I do not have a system restore point to go back to either, it was erased. Im stuck. Help.

Hi,I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Build 6002 and have recently been infected by the Live Security Platinum virus (PUM.Disabled.SecurityCenter) and have cleaned it using the method from here.Everything's been going ok actually, except for the fact that now the whole of my Windows Security Center is unusable. I suspect it is due to the system files that were removed or modified during the removal process. Now Windows Update is not even present in the Services list and Windows Defender gives a "failed to initialize" error. It would be great if you could shed some light to me for this problem.Thank you.

My computer has multiple problems: Congratulation You Won audio/pop up; Windows Security Center pop-ups with fake alerts that it can fix; Vista Security 2011 pop up alerts/scans; This is not a joke you are the 100000 visitor pop ups and some sort of browser redirector. "Vista Security" seems to have disabled my anti-virus program (windows security essentials). There was also a "Java TM Platform Standard Edition" icon in my toolbar, which has since disappeared. I tried to run HijackThis and it won't run. I tried to rename it - still won't run. I have tried MalwareBytes and scans by MSE (when I could still make it work) and nothing was detected or changed. "Vista Security" is throwing up a security alert/system integrity threat/System Hijack/Tracking Software etc. "alerts" every few minutes. Yesterday when I entered Vista Security in the browser search, it crashed the browser. It hasn't done that today, but did send me a "warning" that was a threat (don't remember the actual wording- they come so fast.) It seems that my computer is totally unprotected.
I am ready to start over - I have my important files backed up on an external drive. I tried to reinstall Vista, a "clean" reinstall, but it wouldn't let me - it said drivers were missing and I couldn't figure out how to get them - it said on a disc, which I don't seem to have.
Very frustrated - if anyone has advice I ... Read more

I have for a long time been interested in becoming qualified to work in a security position and I hoping some pen testers and security professionals could fill me in on the life of the job.

I have heard in the past about jobs where 3 days of work landed a 10k payout (2 testers), what level do you need to be to get jobs that give payouts that high or higher?

Is it a high stress job?

Do you need to travel a lot or can you do a lot of it remotely?

Other than reading books or websites can you recommend high quality training available through video or full online courses?

Well to start off, I think the best place to start is taking the Security + Courses, then look into the SSCP. The SSCP is the next step up in the Security classes. It will teach you all the realms of security that you will need to master. As for websites, just doing a simple search for computer security or network security should land you a million hits. I know my job can be stressful at times, every job can be. But with the right training and experience any problem can look easy.
Well hope that helps a little

I joined Second Life recently, and would like to know if there are any opinions about the security of one's computer while SL is running?

I know the basic rule of not to accept objects from strangers, but not much beyond that.

Think you have it sorted already with not accepting downloads from strangers, also just makes sure your PC has upto date security apps as in Antivirus and Firewall to catch any malwre that maybe sent.

Oh Please help me with this aweful stuff!! I have spent 14 hours trying to get this mess off my computer and get my life back. This warning screen popped up as you know after I got blasted by a porn page and had shut my computer completely off and rebooted. I did not download the spyware offered but something still got in. Lost the control panel and had restricted access to certain things. After many hours went into control panel through another user and was able to do a few things. I found a site that had a control panel fix and did get that restored on main user but everything is slow and not running right. I have also run Xoftspy, prevx, spybot, and spyhunter. I have run Norton......none of which has solved the problem. I also have Hijack this and can send log if someone will just please help me.

Firefox 42 ... answer to the ultimate question of life, security bugs and fully private browsing?

Mozilla has released Firefox 42 and Firefox ESR 38 38.4, which include fixes for worrying security vulnerabilities in the web browser.

The November 3 update squashes at least three bugs that can be potentially exploited to achieve remote code execution.

Two Mozilla engineers, Tyson Smith and David Keeler, uncovered two flaws (CVE-2015-7181 and CVE-2015-7182) in NSS, a toolkit used by Firefox to encrypt web traffic over SSL/TLS.

By exploiting "a use-after-poison and buffer overflow in the ASN.1 decoder," a malicious HTTPS website can potentially inject arbitrary evil code into the connecting browser and execute it, it appears. That seems a particularly neat way to install malware on PCs.

These programming blunders are fixed in NSS versions, 3.19.4, and 3.20.1, which are used in Firefox 42 and Firefox ESR 38 38.4.

Other applications that use the open-source toolkit for encrypting internet traffic must be rebuilt with a non-vulnerable version of the libraries, and pushed out to people to install.

This topic is targeted at Vista users mainly who may visit here only for Vista support.
On April 11, 2017 support for Vista will officially end meaning that there will be no more security updates, no more official support from Microsoft period and you will be left with a unsecure OS.
I highly doubt Vista will get the same lifeboat that XP has as XP is still unofficially supported.
So what will a vista user do, for me there are three answers I can give you who are not sure what to do next after vista stops being supported:

1: Try Linux

Now I know what you are going to say "What is Linux?"
Linux is a alternative operating system to windows and unlike buying a copy of windows again Linux is free to use and try.
Its tragic that the mainstream user doesnt know what it is but yes there is another OS out there that doesn't conform to Microsoft or apple.
The easiest Linux i can recommend that will be on par with vista in terms of interface is Linux Mint

Its current incarnation is 18.1 and comes in two main flavors, MATE and Cinnamon plus there are other interfaces offered like KDE and XFCE.
All of these options seem confusing I know but each one of these choices offers something for someine.
KDE and Cinnamon are more for people who like a more modern look and feel while MATE and XFCE are more for older hardware.
If your Vista machine caan run its graphics then KDE and Cinnamon would be the best option

Question: Life after Vista

Hi forum,
Have just had a "clean" install of Windows 7 from the Upgrade disc and I am just going to air my comments.
I decided to let a technician do the job for me in spite of all the good advice from the forum about how to do it. It went a treat, thankfully and only cost a few euros.
First impressions....hated the garish backgrounds and finally settled for a nice even deep blue screen. First hiccup..back-up from Vista failed but I had luckily put a lot of music, financial reports and pictures onto a memory stick two months ago. I have lost a couple of month's reports, however but I can guess at the figures. Like new shoes (or dentures) 7 takes some getting used to and I had to hunt for some drivers too. To tell the truth I should have gladly re-installed Vista at this stage (I still have it on a recovery partition) but I think I was getting a little cloudy in my thinking and not relaxing into the system more.
A couple of hours later I am absolutely delighted with the system and the speed at which it operates is amazing (particularly after Vista) and I dare say, as the technician told me, that,in a week or so, the whole thing will grow on me. I have still a lot to learn about it yet. So the future looks bright after a rather strange start to the change.

Answer:Life after Vista

Peter, you know me and how the forum works. Ask as many questions as you like and soon you will be a great fan of Seven, like myself.

I don't know if it's just me or what, but after running Vista on my notebook, I've taken a substantial loss to battery life. In XP, with brightness at 30% I would get a soild 2.5 to 3.0 hours of battery life. With Vista, running in power saver mode, with 30% brightness and my max CPU utilization set to 35% and min set to 5% I might get 1.75 hours MAX, the norm being around 1.5 hours.

I haven't changed how much I use my notebook, and normally the wireless is switched off.

My notebook is a Core Duo T2500, 2GB Ram, 100GB HDD, ATI X1600 Mobility with built in wireless and a six cell battery (largest it can take).

I don't know if it's me, if I've messed up some settings somewhere, of if Vista is just really bad at power management? I really love the operating system, and this is the only problem I really have with it. I really do not feel like going back to XP, and carrying around 2 batteries only to get a max of three hours of life from my notebook really sucks.

Anyone else have similar problems or have great battery life? I'm really stumped.

Hello everyone. I'm a new guy, and mostly looking for a quick fix to what I hope should be a simple problem.
For nostalgia purposes I'm trying to play the notoriously bug-ridden game Monty Python's The Meaning of Life. Trying to install it, however, I'm treated to the message "Program requires Windows NT 4.0 service pack 3 or higher". Now from what little I know about this, it seems like my brand new laptop should probably have "higher", right?
Does anyone know what's going on here, and how to fix it?

Answer:The Meaning of Life on Vista

Windows Vista and Windows NT are different OS platforms.
Even though Vista has alot of NT in it, it will not run NT software straight out of the box.
Look at the manual for the game to find what OS work with it.
It will probable not mention windows 95, ME or any similar OS.

My battery life has been cut in half with the installation of vista.
Whats that program called for laptop power management? I think im gonna try it..

Answer:Vista and battery life

Did you disable the original power management in order to run the laptop at "full speed"?

SpeedStep or C'nQ work fine in Vista. I've used Vista Beta 2/RC1 on both Intel and AMD laptops. Many video drivers have performance profiles for AC and battery operation.

It is likely to lose battery time with Vista with Aero enabled, but with standard power saving it's not very much.

Answer:Life of Vista Forum

The problem is that if you add all of these subjects to the 'helproom' that forum will be so big that most subjects will be hidden on page two within an hour or so.I was a bit disappointed to see that the powers that be decided that 'Mobile world' was a more important forum than Linux. Apparently microsoft has said it will be limiting the number of machines to which vista can be transferred to just one. Apparently, computers now have longer life-spans, so you are unlikely to want to upgrade your PC after switching to vista until the next operating system comes out.Now if that also includes upgrading components then I,d at best get 8 months use for my £190 and at worst 6_7 weeks, i,m constantly upgrading something or other. No Value. In the 3 or so years I,ve had XP my PC has totally changed and I just reactivate each time it asks.If F.E. can shed any light on this I,d be appreciative.

Answer:Life-span of Vista?

hi, i was wondering if Vista's Security will be more advaced than Windows XP ? if so how come ?

Answer:Windows Vista's Security ?

yeah, it's way more advanced... and the security blows
every single time you do something that involves the OS (pretty much everything) it asks for admin confirmation.

and to answer "how come", identity theft, insider secrets, fraudulent credit card purchases... to name a few

I have read in several places that since Windows Vista SP1 x64 a new security API was introduced that allows security software to monitor system without kernel patching.
For example, it is written here (
"Application programming interfaces (APIs) by which non-Microsoft security and malicious software?detection applications can work alongside Kernel Patch Protection on 64-bit versions of Windows Vista. These APIs help software partners develop applications
that extend the functionality of the kernel on 64-bit computers without disabling or weakening the protection that Kernel Patch Protection offers".
And here (

"Instead, Microsoft worked with third-party companies to create new Application Programming Interfaces that help security software perform needed tasks without patching the kernel. These new interfaces were included in Windows Vista Service Pack 1".
Also some document named "Kernel Patch Protection Criteria Evaluation Document" is referenced in some places but I cannot find it.
Could someone explain what kind of API is that? Is it about minifilter drivers or not? Is it documented anywhere?
Thank you.

I'm researching going from XP pro to Vista x64, primarily because I've picked up some new ram at the recently cheap pricing.

Why is it still so difficult to decide to go 64-bit, and also to pick a Vista brand (home, premium, etc.)? If I go 64-bit there are all these warnings about what software might or might not work. What's with the stupid 32-bit ram limits in this day and age? For the money that Microsoft brings in you'd think they could have planned this better, or just plain do a better job. And the prices; what bull.

Should I stay with my XP Pro, where I'm happy as a lark, or switch to Vista x64, and spend weeks or months tweeking the rig, just to realize 4gb?

Answer:Vista x64, Ram Limits & the meaning of Life.

There is a RAM (correct term memory address space) limitation because in a 32bit system you ONLY have 2^32 possible addresses.

Sure you can use PAE to expand on this to 64Gig BUT for some reason MS decided not to allow that (yes there is a slowdown as you need to page between the different 4gig banks but... for servers and such.)

For performance and full bandwidth you need extra memory address lines and thus 64bit is needed. Its not some great conspiracy, its simple maths&engineering

HOWEVER 64bit on windows is different to say... 64bit on linux due to the number of apps that are actually 64bit compiled, is this of concern? kinda
1) as opose to a 100% 64bit system (/me loves his gentoo setup), in a system with a 64bit OS, but 32apps you end up loading effectively the same libs/apps twice (the 64bit version and the 32bit versions)
2) if you end up having a load of RAM but for some stupid reason expect said RAM/mem-map to be exposed to a 32bit application you are very much mistaken. A 32bit app can only address 2^32 lines (in practice 3.5Gig) so if you have 8gig of RAM its a waste

just some thoughts. If you want 64bit OS go for it, if not don't. Simple as that

I'm having huge problems with every boot -- it's a miracle it can even boot at all.

Currently on the machine, here is a list of just some of the problems.

-- Task Manager will not open properly, it sits in systray (showing completely idle) and the main window does not open.
-- Network and sharing Center : Locks up completely on open - can't even close it, it just sits there, spinning mouse cursor and all, giving me hackey looks.
-- Windows date and time locks up when trying to synchronise.
-- Tried to install adaware search and destroy earlier, windows installer decided to crash and is currently still stuck "cancelling".
-- Windows sidebar crashes on startup.

Please advise what I can do -- reinstalling the OS is NOT an option, neither is booting from the disk - the laptop no longer has a CD drive.

EDIT: Windows Defender refuses to start, as does rstrui (system restore -- although it wouldn't help anyway, apparently it thinks it only has 3 restore points now, all within the last week.)

I put this on a hardware forum, but I think it might be vista related.

Well here's the scoop. I have, what I thought was, A very good system. Unfortunetly games keep on crashing. HL2, Supreme Commander, you name it, it seems to crash. I get Runtime Errors. Sometimes that my memory is full. Game freezes. And sometimes the whole thing just exits. (not to mention that vista keeps crashing explorer and I find myself constantly having to restart the explorer.exe application. I'm running the 64-bit version of ultimate just for reference. My brother, who has a much less powerful system does not have the FPS problems that I have. For instance, playing Garry's Mod on HL2 if I'm facing away from the action I'll be getting close to 300 fps, but when I turn towards the minimal stuff going on I'll get 9fps while my brother on his stock dell (not even an XPS) gets maybe 25 to 30. Also for some reason or another my ping will shoot up at the same time.

All in all I'm pretty p.o'ed that I spent this money on quality parts and nothing seems to be working right. and yes i've updated drivers reinstalled... reformated. The computers sees all my equipment, recognizes my 8 gig of ram and my two video cards (SLI does do the much extra when I turned it on)

Thanks for any help in getting my system to live up to what it's made up of.

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum.

The other day I got hit by Vista Home Security and Windows Home Security virus. It's made my computer completely useless(no Internet access).

For the past 2 days I've trying to fix it but to no avail.

At first I went to safe mode and tried a restore to a prior period but the virus was even in safe mode. Any time I tried to restore, the virus pops up even after I tried to end process.
So I did some research and found this:

I loaded rkill and Malwarebytes onto my computer using a USB stick. But rkill is not stopping the Vista Home Security and Windows Home Security virus from running so that I can download Malwarebytes and run it so that I can remove the virus.

Every time I run rKill I get the black screen and then after a while I get this message and then a notepad the program finished.

" sed.exe: can't read c:\users\acer\appdata\local\temp\rks1.log: no such file or directory "

The Vista Home Security and Windows Home Security virus wasn't disable so that I could download and run Malwarebytes.

I tried it in normal mode and safe mode.

The big issue is that the virus hit my work computer and I got a deadline.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I came here as reccomended by a friend from as we encountered some problems on my computer after cleaning up some Malwares.
Okay, I dont know really what to include in my post so I'll just start by stating my problems and then putting up a screenshot of it.

Just a note, that I am an administrator on my computer.

So, here are the problems:
1.) The network button on my taskbar is showing an "unkown status," it says that acces is denied.

2.) It will not let me click on items with the security button on it. What it does sometimes is just flash a window and then it disappears.

3.) It will not let me perform any updates.

4.) It will not let me enable or disable Windows Defender.

EDIT #1:
5.) I dont know if this is with the security issue also, but it will not let me use my messenger.

Those are the problems i found so far. I will let you know if i find any more.

I picked up a new laptop recently and it had Windows Vista Home Premium installed as the OS. I installed a utility on the computer to periodically clean the registry. I've decided to delete it from the computer. But, when I try to delete the program, I get an error that indicates I do not have the proper user privileges to do so. I've disabled the User Account Security and it still gives me the error I'm the Administrator for the laptop, and I assumed I had full access privileges. Well considering that Vista is just 6 months old and all flaws have already been patched. I dont know what you are really looking for.

There was only 3 major flaws that i can think of. The ,ani cursor flaw (Patched) and a couple others which are already patched. They hit about the same time as the animated cursor.

If you want to read up on flaws you are better off Looking at XP. There are more flaws to talk about and write about the patch cycle of M$.

Answer:Windows Vista Security Flaws

Hello and welcome to TSF. :)

So you're saying that Windows is not 100% secure??

Hmm, not really sure about the current flaws of the OS. I remember that at the end of last year some articles surfaced about the major flaws and some Russian hacker who posted the flaws concerning user accounts and raising their administrative rights leaving Vista open to attacks. And there was something about IE7 and hackers ability to take over your computer. I'm not certain of the details, it was a while ago and I am quite certain that Microsoft fixed those probs.
Some more internal concerns include Vista minimizing the use of administrative rights. There is usually a conflict between making the OS very smooth and easy to use, while also making it secure. The two usually don't go together. Sorry if I am so vague here, but I haven't heared of any Vista's major flaws for a while. I'm sure you could find a few articles about the topic on some academic journals or tech news. If I come across something more I'll post it.

Maybe Iím in the minority, but Iím a very happy Windows Vista camper. I did some casual beta testing, but took my official plunge last November when I installed Vista Ultimate on my Toshiba Core Duo tablet pc. My only real problem with Vista has been drivers, or lack thereof.

Now a year later, thatís all but straightened out except for a couple of Bluetooth USB transceivers. Never had a big need for them but I do need to look into that again.

I digress. What Iím really curious about is what people are thinking about Vista security. Itís been a little funny. When Vista first came out, everyone was shouting about how much of a pain in the ass UAC, but to be honest, I never thought so. And every day thereís some story about how slow or broken Vista is, but what I find strange is that stories of malware seem almost non-existent.

I donít run an active virus scanner. Iíll scan software that I donít trust with manually with a free scanner and do a full machine scan once a month. I do run Windows Defender, keep my machines patched, use DEP, use Windows firewall along with my routers firewall, and I donít open attachments from untrusted sources. Actually, this is almost the same security practice I use with XP and I never had a single problem. Under XP, I used to use Firefox to browse less ďreputableĒ sites. I however donít really think about with Vista, I actually feel that IE in protected mode might actually be better overall than Firefox, but at any rate, no problem... Read more

Answer:Windows Vista Security: A year later

You're going to be surprised by the amount of people that might come in to say "Vista is the ultra security hole, it is the suck and should be the banned".

I however agree with you, I'm thinking of simply uninstalling Spybot S&D and SuperAntiSpyware. I've had this Vista install for 4 months now and have not gotten any form of adware or malware from any internet site I visit. so I see no reason to keep them running on my machine.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I believe I clicked on a bad link in a google search result and my computer was infected with the Windows Vista Security 2011 malware. I ran rkill and malwarebytes in safe mode and it didnt find anything. I restarted the computer and all the popups came back when I opened Windows Movie maker. I ran rkill again, this time NOT in safe mode- unfortunately i cannot find the log of what was found. I also did a full scan with MBAM and nothing was detected. (I did update it before running the scan.)

Can I be sure that the malware was completely removed?

Thanks again

Hello and welcome. Lets see if there is something else here too. Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not which appears to be an older version of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.

I've started to get Windows Security Alerts lately. When I open the Alert, I see that I don't have any malware protection and no antivirus software. I find this strange because Norton Internet Security was pre-installed on the laptop. It has anti spyware and antivirus utilities etc. These alerts didn't exist a few days ago...why now? I wanted to load AVG antivirus, but my understanding is that there shouldn't be 2 antivirus programs running at the same time. Is this another malfunction of Vista or is there anything that I can do about it? Thanks.

Answer:Vista Windows Security Alerts

As long as you have an antivirus everything is fine.
You can disable those alerts, just follow the steps:

- go to Control Panel, click on "Check this computer's security status" under the Security link
- now click on "Change the way Security Center alerts me" on the left pane

Game Over For Windows Vista?s Security?

I picked up an interesting story over at Neowin entitled ?Vista?s Security Rendered Completely Useless by New Exploit? which reports on a new technique That can ?bypass all memory protection safeguards that Microsoft built into Windows Vista.?
The researchers were able to load whatever content they wanted into any location they wished on a user?s machine using a variety of scripting languages, such as Java, ActiveX and even .NET objects. This feat was achieved by taking advantage of the way that Internet Explorer (and other browsers) handle active scripting in the Operating System.
Instead of exploiting a security vulnerability the researchers Mark Dowd of IBM Internet Security Systems (ISS) and Alexander Sotirov, of VMware Inc. of the architecture of Windows Vista. Another researcher described the technique as ?completely game over.?
It?s currently not known if other operating systems are vulnerable as well but it is very likely. The best against this attack would be an add-on like NoScript that would most likely prevent it completely.
This week at the Black Hat Security Conference two security researchers will discuss their findings which could completely bring Windows Vista to its knees.

Ok fellas I don't know where to begin, I have been batteling this problem for the last 16 hours and tried everything that I can think of and still nothing, and I can't realy pinpoint the problem (new to Vista and not so tech savy to begin with) to know where I should be looking and what to search for on google.

A couple of months ago I purchased a brand new Laptop, Toshiba Satellite P200-144 ( Link with full specs) runing on Windows Vista Home Premium Edition 32bit (6.0, Build 6000).

I would have posted a DXDIAG Log file to further help you assist me, but for reasons explained below, I can't:(

I didn't have a single problem with it after this morning, now, I'm a heavy torrents user with a slow connection so my Laptop is on almost 24/7, but this morning I decided to reboot it just in case, haven't installed any new software or updates that required a reboot, and after that all the problems started.

First the Sidebar failed to load and gave an error message along the lines of "sidebar.ini file could not be found or is in use by another program" then when I tried launching Firefox (, it gave me an error message saying that "Firefox is already runing but not responding. to open a new window you must first close the existing Firefox process or restart your system"

so I did that, again, sidebar didn't load and the problem with FFX was still unsolved, so I opened up the Task Manager, no instances of firefox were runing.

I recently upgraded my HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop (dv6815nr to be exact) from Vista Home Premium to 7 Home Premium and I can't say for sure but I believe my laptop's battery is working a bit better and longer.

At first, I thought it drained quicker than when Vista was installed but I think I was just speculating, especially since I hadn't had a good night's rest in a few days.

I'm very curious as to whether any laptop users, who have switched from Vista straight to the official release of Win 7, have noticed an improvement in battery life/performance?

I have a dual boot T400 (2768-AA6) which can boot either windows XP SP3 or Vista x64 business. Battery is the 6 cell. I have all the most recent drivers installed. Currently, on the same power manager configuration, i am getting 1.5-2 hours of battery life less on the vista compared to xp. I could at most squeeze 3.5hrs in vista (with processor and screen brightness set to minimum), while on xp i can comfortably achieve 4-5 hours. Activities that i do are approx the same, web-surfing, some word processing. Experience are all with integrated graphics. I turned off superfetch in vista. Is it because x64 instructions are less effecient? or are there any problems with the drivers? Or am i just an anomally? Please share your battery life experience with vista 64.

Answer:Battery life reduced when running vista x64

Hello, Do you have Windows Aero turned on? It's known to be mainly attributabe to a decrease in battery runtime.

This thing appeared today and has completely DESTROYED my system. I am begging for help. It has disabled my AVG 8 anti-virus program, and has installed something called AntiMalware that has attempted to activate itself.

This thing keeps putting fake system alerts about bogus trojans and other crap. I have tried to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiScanner but the programs do not operate, they crash immediately when I try to run them.

I'm desperate. I really need my computer to work right now for school and it's unusable like this. Can someone talk me through how to erradicate this thing from my system?

Answer:Please help! Fake Windows Security Center in Windows Vista

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please try doing the below:

Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then doube click on it to run it.

It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running.

Now download and Run exeHelper

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Also please try running the below online scan:

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:

C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
log.txt - from exeHelper
C:\ - from MGtools
The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you ... Read more

This was one of 6 security updates which I installed yesterday, only to have Firefox, IE and Google Chrome hang indefinitely. As the only change I had made was installed these updates I uninstalled them all and now browsing works fine. Does anyone know which of this group of updates is the problem or are they all inter-related. I don't like not installing necessary updates but also don't want my browsing mucked up. I've checked on Google that there seems to be issues with Windows 7 updates but nothing is mentioned for Vista. Thank you

Have you tried installing them one at a time? Takes a bit longer but there are times when this way is the only solution if you have problems with updates.

Last night when I tried to go online windows vista 2012 internet security popped up and did a scan of the computer saying that 33 infections were detected. I tried many times to log on after this but was unable to access the internet and even when wi fi was switched off danger warnings kept popping up. I have also been unable to switch on firewall without a prompt to download the registered version. I googled this on another computer this morning and came across this website. In have tried to follow the steps to remove this spyware but have been unable to get started. Firstly when I right clicked on internet explorer there was no option to run as administrator so I was unable to get online. I finally managed to online by logging on without add ons. I tried to download FixNCR from this website by clicking on the link but when I click on the link it asks from my permission to run registry editor and when I say yes a window pops up to say key successfully added and then nothing else happens.

Any help on getting this thing to leave me alone?

Answer:Removing the Security Alerts in Windows Vista

Are you talking about hte security center pop ups? The one that tells you about hte Anti-Virus and such.

You should be able to go under the Control Panel and there should be the security Center. Load it up and click on Dont show me these reminders ever. It will not prompt you again. Also if you just click on it in the taskbar it should do that as well. Just make sure you click the link that says:
"Change the way Security Center wamrs me" or something like that.

Hello all,
Kinda newbie here. I have a new HP Pavilion dv5 Notebook 32 bit OS Windows Home Premium Vista. The Norton Antivirus that came with the laptop has just expired. I checked the Windows Security Center and turned on the Firewall and windows Defender but obviously I don't have antivirus on. a) How good is windows Security firewall and defender? and b) as far as Antivirus goes, I checked out some reviews, user comments and also read some antivirus software forums. I was concerned that it seemed a lot of people were having issues with Vista and latest versions of antivirus specifically Zone Alarm and Bit Defender, where they had to download older versions of the antivirus until resolution is in place for the issues. For those on this forum that have Vista can you tell me which antivirus software you seem to be happy with and have had limited issues. We use this notebook for a small start-up businss and personal. I sure would appreciate your input. I'm almost thinking I'll just buy the Norton since it seemed to work pretty good on this notebook (although I've already removed it with the removal tool).
Thanks in advance for suggestions and your opinions.

Hi all,

I have a nasty nasty virus. I think the process is ave.exe. As soon as I try to get into windows, even in safe mode, it just restarts my computer. If I'm somehow able to get into windows before it restarts, i can't run any executables, so it's been impossible to scan for.

Do you guys have any idea on where I should start to try to remove this thing? The machine is a mac that runs vista, if that helps.

Thanks in advance,

Answer:ave.exe / "windows security tool" virus in Vista

Ok, so after a little work, I was able to kill some processes, and change back a couple infected registry entries, namely: HKCR\.exe\shell\open\command and HKCR\secfile\shell\open\command. If you have the ave.exe infection, find these registries, and change the %1 extension to %*. This will give you control back of your machine, and allow you to run executable files again.

Hope this helps!

Hi all, one of our PCs at work appears to be infected with a virus related to a false Windows Security Centre message. It only appears to affect one user account on the PC and manifests itself by not allowing the user to open applications. When you try to open an application, it prompts you to the Open With dialogue box even if it is a recognised file format.

I have run several virus scans which do not appear to have shown anything up. My only other concern is the user of the PC may have been medling with it before I've even seen what was wrong with it.

I have attached a HiJackThis log and would appreciate any feedback that can be given.

hi i have a double problem with this windows vista security alert 2011 i started up my PC and for the last couple of time it said it could not update and was reverting changes then the last time i started my computer this security alert came up which said i had all these serious security breeches and i had to purchase to sort it out. it would not let me access the internet or email and i can not open any files. it will not allow me to system restore either. i went to get my laptop to find out what i could do to fix the virus that i have on my PC and when i started up my laptop the exact same thing happened to it. i shut it down and when i started the laptop back up it will not even let me log on. i have had to go onto an old computer of my kids to post this thread for help, i'am not sure what other information to post, can you help with both problems? i'm happy to work through one at a time but thought you needed to know about both.

This has been an ongoing issue that has yet to shine a light at the end of the tunnel!!!
I have a Toshiba Satellite L350D Laptop, its running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and had the sp2. Just over a month ago, I had ripped a burnt cd and had it in library, the reminder bubble popped up in the bottom right corner letting me know it had downloaded updates and the were ready for my review to install. I did this, then did the mandated shut down restart so update would be loaded and saved. Only after I tried to restart , I haven't been able to get to windows. I downloaded and did iso burn, but I believe an error had occured, cause it did system repair for 29 hours and then instructed to sd & rs, and once I did this, I can't get to see begining of cd with windows etc. I get a disk read error occured, press cntrl, alt, del. I since have received the original recovery media disks that came with laptop, but they won't boot properly.
Toshiba instructs to hold down c button and release when word toshiba appears, but it goes to windows loading files, then ms scroll bar, then c,a,del mesg. or All black and a white mouse arrow. The toshiba recovery wizard had an error code and wont load. Can anyone provide some assistance or walk me through. More details avaliable upon request but I wanted to make sure I was thorough but haven't put anyone to sleep yet. Thanks in advance!!!
Also I have run dskchk and says all ok but didn't load mesgs. at status 50.

I recently got the windows vista 2012 security virus. I followed some online instructions, which involved running tdsskiller and malware bytes -- unfortunately this was a month or so ago, and I can't remember exactly what was done. This seemed to remove some of the issues, however, there seem to be multiple residuals which are doing weird things. The CPU usuage is high, the process responsible seems to be PING.EXE *32, which internet searches seem to suggest is being hijacked by a virus. Malware bytes also seems to continually find trojans. More troubling is that, in preparing for this post, I found that I could not access the windows firewall settings due to an unknown problem. Additionally, scan disk will not work.

Thanks for your help!

Please may someone advise me as to what I can do.My HP laptop, windows vista (service pack 2) will not let me open most programs and refuses to load internet browser on normal mode, however when I start the computer up on safe mode with networking, it allows me to use the internet browser and the problem with opening programs seems to be eliminated. I have tried 2 system restores which has made no difference, and I have tried deleting unwanted programs under control panel but am unable to do this on normal mode as I cannot open any windows and cannot do it under safe mode. There seems to be an issue with my virus software (I use Windows Live One Care) and a few days ago it randomly stopped working and now refuses to let me open it, uninstall it, or reinstall it. What is the problem? Thank you.

I will be upgrading from Vista to W7 and this will be a 1st time experience for me.

I read the Microfsoft chart on this activity and according to the written table I will not have to intervene and everything will be upgraded automatically.

My question is do I need to disable my Avira security prior to loading the W7 CD's.

See if you can download and run the installer for Microsoft Security Essentials. I suspect you may have a worm or virus that is preventing updates. Or some grub boot loader or maybe some registry edits that are causing it.This may be the best but not clear link. may be that you would have to buy or obtain a cd to boot your computer from then scan for malware. It may not hurt too much to try Vista's "repair" while booted from dvd.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
