Windows 8.1 Lock screen login puzzle

Question: Windows 8.1 Lock screen login puzzle

Hi

I have installed Win 10 as an upgrade on a seperate partition to my Win 8.1. Win 10 is x64 version and Win 8.1 is 32 bit. As far as I can tell this puzzle started when I upgraded the x64 partition to Win 10. Now when my lock screen appears and I click the mouse for the password box there is a back arrow next to my user name. Pressing this gives me a black screen, then my user name reappears without the back arrow and I login. I am using the same MS account for Win 8.1 and Win 10 TP. This doesnt happen on Win 10 lock screen/password screen. Is there anyway I can get rid of this arrow, just a niggle I know but would be nice.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All,
Please kindly let me know how could i stop the spotlight (drop-down) screen in windows 10 using registry settings.
Means while we lock the computer or while we restart the computer then there one screen appears then we press "Space" and then went to up and then we can see the login credential page to login to the windows. I need to disable the same screen using
registry change".

I have tried with the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\
Right-click the Windows folder and click New > Key. Name this new key "Personalization" and then navigate inside it.

but still i am getting the drop-down screen in windows i want to disable the screen it should not appears on the login page.
please let me know how could i disable that screen.
OR
If we can increase the time for the screen then how we can increase the time to display the screen.

Thanks & Regards,

When I log into Window 8.1 the num lock is always off. Same thing continues in Win 8.1 after I upgraded to Win 8.

When the boot is complete (HP m7-j010DX) the num lock is still off.  This is a higher end HP laptop and I am also blown away they pinched pennys to remove the on/off light on the num lock making the confusion worse.

This is driving me crazy as every PC I have used in the last 20 years has always started with the num lock on   and had an "On" light.  I continue to get stuck at boot up or can't figure out when my passwords won't work after login. It is a huge time waster.

Answer:Windows 8.1, Num Lock Off at Login Screen

Just a qwerk of 8. You can change that behavior in the Registry, so that it is on all the time. Also check the bios settings. Some machines allow you to set the NumLock to 'On' state in there.

How can I change the windows 8.1 login screen (that comes with a password) and replace it with any image? I'm not talking about the LOCK screen. I searched a lot , some websites told me to edit the group policy and add a custom image here

C:\Windows\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds
But this method did not work. What should I do? I don't need any third party paid software. I require a free method.

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

I got a W540 a couple weeks ago as a replacement for my T420, and it's loads faster, but I'm worried I may have gotten a lemon... (Windows7 64bit, HGST hard drive(not SSD), K1100M, docking station (unaware what kind), 2 additional Samsung monitors on VGA/DVI) When I'm using the computer, with applications like VisualStudio, Outlook, and Chrome open, from time to time I'm unable to use any Windows shutdown/lock functionality.  Ctrl+alt+delete does nothing, ctrl+shift+esc does nothing, start menu->shut down does nothing, start menu -> restart does nothing.  The only way I'm able to get it to respond is by putting it to sleep via the start menu, or by closing the laptop(sleep).  However, the computer doesn't truly seem to go to sleep.  The red LED on the top of the laptop continues to glow, and the hard drive continues to spin, but the display goes black.  It's still lit, but it goes black.  I've left it sit like this for 8+ hours repeatedly, just to make sure that it wasn't simply taking a long time. After one of these episodes, I hold down the power button to turn it off.  When I turn it on, everything seems to work (aside from the message that it was an improper shutdown), and after the "Starting Windows" screen, instead of a log-in screen, I get only black.  The same thing happens if I'm on the dock or it's starting with nothing attached.  When I'm on the dock, though, I can move the mouse around and see the c... Anyone know what can be problem?

Answer:Satellite A100-153 screen lock problem and Windows login?

Hi

According to these Toshiba BIOS FAQ document the BIOS update can be done with 2 different procedures:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

It's possible that you have useed the wrong BIOS update procedure or wrong BIOS.
Well, it's not easy to say why the notebook login freezes. The fact is that the Satellite A100 is a very new notebook and it was delivered with all Microsoft service packs (SP1+Sp2). I don't know if you have installed the unit manually or not but you should use the Toshiba recovery CD.

I would recommend recovering the notebook with the Toshiba recovery CD and then you check if the login problem persists.

Hey guys,
I have a problem whether this is a driver problem since I have an issue regarding a boot issue with a 1-2 second flash of windows loading (the spining circle one) with the background colour of your selected accent before it reaches the lock screen and also after the login process, it would flash black and the same thing occurs before it reaches the desktop. Now, i know it may seem off topic but I have been updating my drivers and also, I had an issue when i increase the scaling through windows 10 to 125% which is the recommended that some information popup like norton or the graphics device adapter (that shows what ram your integrated graphics are) are blurry and hard to see. I kept it on the lowest one atm and it seems to do the trick. Is it a graphics problem of my laptop since I have been trying to update it or just Windows 10 in general issue?
Thanks guys.

Hi,
I'm facing blue screen recently on my Dell XPS 9550 laptop. I've opened ticket to Dell support and their offer was "reinstall Windows 10 OS again and tell us the result" which is unacceptable for me.
When I open the computer the screen is disappearing suddenly and comes back again with fluctuation. Especially It was occurring all the times when I lock my Windows-10 screen then try to login again.
I am attaching the screen captures.
1) Stop Code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE || igdkm64.sys
2) Stop Code: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
After all; I found the soultion as below.
Closed this application --> C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays\Dell PremierColor\PremierColor.exe  and removed from startup everything worked fine and had not any blue screen issue.
Dear Dell and community, at least, Dell me what does PremierColor.exe do? And why we're facing this issue while PremierColor is open?

Okay geniuses. Here's a puzzle that I can't pin-point myself.

PROBLEM:
A clean Windows XP installation halts/freezes at the Windows logo screen (where you see the blue bar indicator).

SOLUTIONS I'VE TRIED BUT FAILED:
A different Windows XP cd.
A different Windows OS (98, millennium).
A different hard drive.
A different power supply (this is when I just got desperate).

I ended up buying a new mobo, cpu, and RAM. I needed to upgrade anyways. I haven't tried reinstalling Windows XP with these new equipment yet. I hope it works. =D

So I disabled the lock screen as it's just another unnecessary click to login, but what I want to be able to do is customise the background image of the login/ctrl+alt+del screen. I know you can change the "accent" colour but I don't want to use a solid colour. How do I go about this?

Greetings -

Ever since the latest update to Windows 10 (10.0,16299) my Login screen screenshot and Lock screen screenshot are different. Personalize>Lock Screen shows the desired screenshot as it always has. "Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen" is set to On as it's always been. Nothing has changed there. Not sure if this is related, but the background screen color has changed from blue to gray when I Restart or Shutdown.

I've looked for a Pictures folder that might contain the stock screenshots without success. I've even reinstalled Windows 10 to try to fix this. I hate to admit it, but I'm stumped. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

What was Microsoft thinking when they not only made this login (not the lock) background image impossible for a user, using normal means, to change, but also stuck the user with the most hideous looking stock images (those cartoonish images of Seattle, etc)? I finally found different sites that gave elaborate instructions for changing the login background, which I did, but it was quite a messy process.

Hello all,
(Disclaimer, I am a complete windows 7 noob, I've been a mac user my whole life but just switched to windows)
Whenever I log into Windows 7 the computer is sending me directly to the "computer locked" login screen instantly, as soon as I enter my password it sends me right back to the lock screen again. This repeats infinitely. I have looked for similar problems on the internet and can not seem to find anyone else that seems to be suffering from this problem.
It works fine in safe mode though. I ran a virus scan with Windows Defender and it couldn't find anything. I tried doing a system repair from the f8 boot prompt, that didn't work. I've exhausted all my efforts and I still cant seem to find a way to fix this. Any help would be much appreciated. I'm in dire need of some halp from someone who knows what they are doing. Because I sure as hell don't. If you need any more detailed info about my system i'll be happy to provide it.

This is a minor irritant but I'm finding it a hard nut to crack! When I switch on our church office computer, the num lock light does not come on which is what I like! I have researched this but nothing I do can seem to make to come on!In BIOS Setup, Boot Up, the NumLock Status is shown as ON. In regedit, I browsed to HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Ketboard the string called InitialKeyboardIndicators was set at 2. When I tried changing that to 0, the green num lock light did come on just before Win XP loaded but, after loading, the light went out again. Many years ago, I also came across click here but am finding their instructions difficult to understand! In the examples, e..g 'View the Klocks main help screen:- klocks /?' they do not make it clear where you type that!I did download klocks and unzipped the compressed file. However, when I tried typing 'klocks +n' at the C:\ command prompt, I got an error message - sorry I cannot remember the exact wording but it was something like klocks cannot be found. If anyone can tell me how to solve this problem, I shall be most grateful!

I had to do an Hp reset of my Notebook PC because of irrational behaviour. Everything was extremely slow and pages were jumping to other pages. After the Reset I now get an error message on my lock screen login page that says "This administrator account has been disabled please refer to administrator. I am the only administrator or User period on my PC. I can then click ok and login to my same regular administrator account. I cannot however change my lock screen photo any longer. Before the Reset I had a photo there. When doing the Reset I saved all my personal files and data.

Hello,

Is there a way to shutdown using keyboard only, from the initial login screen? It's the same screen as the windows lock screen.

I have tried all the standard keys Alt-F4, Esc, Ctrl-Shift-Esc, Ctrl-Break, etc. but to no avail.

I know that there is a button at the bottom right that you can click to shutdown, but I can't see it to click on it (long story: I have a two monitor setup, and the login screen upon boot will show up on my primary monitor. There's something wrong with primary monitor so now when the computer boots, it sometimes displays on my primary monitor and sometimes it doesn't. During the times when it doesn't, I'll need to shut down and restart, but at the login screen, my primary monitor is not showing so I cannot see the shutdown button to click on it)

Thanks.

Hi there!

I've got a Windows domain: Win2k12 R2 AD server + 200+ Windows 10 PRO workstations.

There is a way to add custom message on the login screen.

So I was wondering is there any way to display system info at the Lock Screen or at Login screen?

Registry, Group policy, Control panel and additional settings? Or even BgInfo For Lockscreen edition?))))

It's very useful to see Hostname and its IP even before logging in.

Did somebody tried to do this?

Answer:System info at the Lock/Login screen: e.g. IP, HostName...

BgInfo does not and cannot run on the login screen. Due to the security implications there are strict requirements for software that can run do this. Malicious software running here could potentially steal user login credentials and that would be a huge security problem.

The only software I have heard of that does this is mentioned in this thread:
http://www.eightforums.com/software-...n-program.html

I know nothing of this software other than what is in the thread but it appears to be a part of a larger software package and likely expensive.

I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 due to this problem, and everything was running smoothly up until today (approximately 4 days after I reinstalled the OS). This morning, I attempted to boot up my computer as usual, and it simply hardlocked as soon as the Welcome screen came up.

This hardlock only recently started happening with my PC when I hooked up a fourth monitor to my GPU, to produce a 3x1 monitor arrangement, plus my Cintiq tablet. (Currently, the Cintiq is in the shop for repairs.) When that configuration was plugged in, the computer started hardlocking. After that, I reinstalled Windows 7 over the weekend, and it was all working fine. Up until now.

There have been no BSOD's at all - even with the hard locks, and I attempted to use the driver verifier to see what was causing it, as this is my greatest suspicion. I rarely find that my computer builds have problems, though I don't have the tools to test my RAM yet (would like some help in this regard).

This is my workstation that I use for my art. I would like to resolve this ASAP before the week is over. Please help! ; 3

Answer:Hard Lock @ Welcome/Login Screen during Boot-Up, unable to resolve

Have you tried the System Repair Disc you can make in Win7's Control Panel, Backup and Restore? It has to be for either 32-bit or 64-bit but your System Specs do show you have the 64-bit version of Windows. It doesn't necessarily have to be made from a specific computer.

Question: Wifi login puzzle

We've been swapping out computers on our LAN but have run into an issue with one computer with which the wireless key is being continually rejected by the router when it is without any doubt at all correct. The workaround atm is to use Ethernet, but in the interest of reducing the rat's nest of cables to a minimum we need to resolve this. I'm well used to setting up local networks but this one has me banging my head in frustration. All of the computers are using either Win 7 or Win 8.1.

Answer:Wifi login puzzle

It has to be a hardware or driver incompatibility with the router. I have this problem with my mother's server. The solution for us was ethernet because no other driver versions would work. Another solution is to pick up another wifi card or dongle. This was Server Essentials 2012

I was infected by the Antivirus soft (expletive). Here is my original description. Still can't log into windows normally. My keyboard and mouse stop responding at the login screen and the cursor freezes. Fortunately they still work in safe mode. Hello....brand new to this, so sorry if this is posted incorrectly. Problem: tried to download harddrive cloning program to fix my laptop that was indicating an eminent hd failure. Got infected with Antivirus Soft. Realized it immediately. Downloaded PC Tools Internet Security and paid for it, according to instructions I found online with another computer. Those instructions said run scan before rebooting computer, but the program said the computer needed to be restarted to work. Against my better judgement, I restarted the computer. When windows login screen came up, both the keyboard and mouse froze before I could enter my password. Would not move or allow any data entry....just hung up. Searched for possible ways to fix this and everything indicated to boot into safe mode, which I did and fortunately both keyboard and mouse work in safe mode. Ran system scan with pc tools and it found some of the antivirus soft problems along with whatever else it found. Hi, new to these forums, hope I don't break any rules or anything here.

My laptop is a
Sony Vaio - Model: SVE141R11L
Product name: SVE14135CXB
Pre-loaded with Windows 8 x64
Intel(R) Core i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
6GB RAM w/ 900GB HDD space
Purchased in Navy Exchange last year (around July 2013)

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.

I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. Strange problem here. I have four Dell desktops set up the same way as my Dell laptops, however, the desktops all work fine but the laptops don't. I have the latest Windows 10 Anniversary Edition installed and the only way I can get it to work is by installing a basic build, with nothing kept.

If I install Windows 10 and keep the existing files, upon boot, the laptop loops between the login and lock screens ad infinitum. The only thought is that I have all but Shutdown and Restart set and all other options greyed out. Is there an easy Regedit patch available to reactivate Hibernate, Sleep, Lock, Switch user, etc?

My plan is to restore a previous Windows 10 image and reactivate all of the above options and then to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 to try and prove my theory.

Answer:Windows 10 loops between login and lock screens ad infinitum

Hi, it sounds like you may be saying that if you do a clean install on your laptops, all is fine.. (or at least if you opt not to keep existing files) "If I install Windows 10 and keep the existing files".

If so, this suggests sthg you have installed or configured is interfering.

Hibernate isn't recommended these days.

Consider this, and try powercgf -a from a command prompt:
I have two new laptops (an HP and a Gateway) with Win 7 Pro on each, and set up
exactly the same. On the Gateway, the sleep and hibernate work fine.
On the HP, the sleep and hibernate are greyed out.

Using cmd: powercfg -a
The Gateway shows " the following sleep states are available ... Standby (S3),
Hibernate Hybrid Sleep"

The HP shows "sleep states not available..system firmware does not support
standby state" "legacy driver vgasave .. prevents this standby state"

Answer:cant login after recent windows update, stuck at login screen

Hi ! Did you create a system repair CD or a system recovery drive?? Here are the ways that you can recover. My first choice would be to restore to a time before the update with a restore point! Read this by HTG! How to Create and Use a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc in Windows 8 or 10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...covery-options
PS! Using a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc
A recovery drive will normally not be necessary. If your computer fails to boot several times, Windows 8 or 10 will automatically bring up the advanced startup options, which allows you to troubleshoot and fix it.
If Windows can?t even bring up these tools, you?ll need the recovery drive, system repair disc, or a Windows 8 or 10 installation disc. Insert the recovery media into your computer and restart. Your computer should boot from the recovery media automatically. (If it doesn?t, you may need to change its boot order.)

This has never happened before. When I turn on the computer, the two accounts show up (both administrator) but whenever I click either of them, the screen just shows the Windows 7 login screen for a while without any text then sends me back to the account selection. This happens when I select either of the accounts, one of them also has a password but that doesn't show up either.

PLEASE HELP.
(also don't know a lot about computers ;-; )

EDIT : When I turned on the computer, it went through updates where it says Starting Windows with the Windows logo. Maybe this helps.

Answer:Can't login to Windows 7. Sends me back to login screen every time.

( just to clarify Is this the same problem ? I posted a video Windows Error - YouTube )

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Hi, I'm new here. I created this account for help because my mother's password seems changed and she couldn't login, the keyboard wasn't sticky so she didn't mistype, caps lock wasn't on. I typed it my self and it didn't work, restarted the computer and it didn't work neither. I then go to thinking it was hacked and the password was simply changed. I go looking around for password changing boots for my flashdrive. I burned PASSCAPE on to my 16gig 2-1 flashdrive. Tried booting on all settings, booted normally, didn't work. So, I ignored it for a while and kept clicking "Reset password" button, It showed up as "Passcape" but claimed the usb slot was empy, wasn't; the slot is "F". I gave up hope on it, so I found this youtube video to reset it the manual labor way-here's the link to it: " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLtJ-iDdWC0 " So, continuing on..

I was simply following the video's instructions, so at step one at duration "2:02" I have to cause a error, I just keep shutting-down the pc while it's booting, because windows will assume it's an error after 2 - 3 times of doing so. Okay, by the time I get to "Repair your computer" button I press enter. And the shocking surprise I get which is odd is this in quotes:

She never told me exactly what was the problem everyone, all she said is "Did you change the password" (waking me up at 8AM) then "The password is changed and I can't get on!" What is this problem we are experiencing-i've never seen this before.

Welcome CJGCJG to the windows 7 forums.

Remote Desktop Program is as it says a program on your computer that will allow you full screen remote to another system that authorizes you. There is a way to automatically bring the RDP program up for you to log into another system but it requires that your primary windows system (the one your want to connect from) be set up to automatically boot into you Operating system, putting the RDP program in your startup fold will bring it up.
Using netplwiz, you can set your userid to automatically log in to your local machine and then the RDP would run and you can then log onto your remote system. In fact y ou can save all the credentials for your RDP session and it will automatically login to your remote system.

Is this clear?

I'm using Windows 7 Pro. I have remove the login pw in my user account now I do not need to do the login and able to use the computer right away. But I found I am using the computer as a user not administrator. How can I skip the login screen and go straight into desktop as administrator. How can I do that? thanks

Answer:Windows 7 Pro login as admin but no need to have login screen

Hello Smash, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm a bit confused with your conflicting statements.

You say that "...now I do not need to do the login and able to use the computer right away.", but then ask "How can I skip the login screen and go straight into desktop..."?

Just to be certain, do you have to log on or not?Log On Automatically at Startup
Are you asking how to log on to the built-in Administrator account to have full access and control?

Hope this may help for now,
Shawn

hi guys,

i've got a very strange problem with the kids laptop which i'm desperate to sort out as my kid has her exams coming up and needs access to her apps.

Windows loads okay, upto the point when i get to the welcome screen.

Sometimes it gets to the welcome screen, but the user profile icons will never show but then sometimes the icons will show, but when i click on the icon, i can't get to the bit where i can type a password.

If i reboot into safemode, then i can perfectly access everything as normal.

Any ideas guys?

Thanks!

Hello, Windows 10 Pro, fully fully updated. The following happens on two completely different machines (desktop and laptop of different manufacturers).

Up until some time ago (I believe, before Creator's Update, but not 100% certain about that), I used to have Windows Spotlight activated, so that almost every day or every other day, on lock screen, I get one of those lovely photos from Microsoft world archive. However, I not only used to get them on the Lock Screen, they were appearing on the Sign-In screen as well on the first boot-up and Sign-in, as I thought they should, as Windows Spotlight works that way (right?). And I really liked it.

But as of one update, that stopped happenning. Windows Spotlight still works fine on Lock Screen, new photos just fine, but on the sign-in screen, I keep getting the Windows 10 default backgroud photo, the beach/cave one.

Needless to say, I changed nothing in the Sign-In or Lock screen settings at all.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've already tried the "Brinx fix". Also, needless to say, I've tried resetting the Windows Spotlight back to Photo, and reboot and back countless times.
Cheers

Windows 10 v1607 displays the lock screen image on the sign-in screen too, which is pretty cool in my opinion.
But if you wish to display a plain login screen, Open Start Menu, click on Settings.
Open Personalization settings and select Lock screen from the left panel.
Here you will see Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen.
Toggle the button to the Off position.

Hello friends, I recently got the Gnome desktop environment on the Ubuntu Software Center, and I used the gdm and startx command as said by another forum site. Nothing wrong, they said to logout, tried to login again, goes to a black screen and sends me back to the Ubuntu login screen. Tried again, same result, panicked. Looked up video tutorial on how to fix it, they said to access the control panel via ctrl-alt-f1 or f2, went to a black screen, no text at all, computer runs fine, no crashing. Is there a special way to access the terminal in a System76 computer, I really don't know very confusing? Is there a way to login with the guest session? I use Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf on my laptop. What causes this, I read on Ubuntu forums it's driver issues with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I have my suspections with the Gnome desktop environment.

Question: Blue screen puzzle

Does anyone have any ideas or clues as to what the following blue screen message refers to? This is on a Win98SE computer.

This is occuring on a church computer, and I haven't been able to raise anything about this particular code. I have to admit that I'm not exactly an expert on blue screen messages. Any input would be appreciated.

Now my Y560 laptop computer is back to it's original problem: It first overheated and shut down.  Now every time I try to load WIndows 7 normally the screen turns off completely when it is supposed to load the user log-in screen. The computer is still on but the display turns off everytime it reaches that same spot. I can only load Safe Mode windows 7 but it is of not much use because safe mode does not allow me to run any programs.  The system seems to be producing way high temperatures even in safe mode. How can I fix this problem with windows 7 shutting off the display when it is about to reach the log-in screen? Even when transfering files in safe mode to an external drive the system will turn off sometimes when a lot of files are transfering. This is very dissapointing because I spent $850 on this computer a year ago, and now it is malfunctioning and over a motnth out of warranty.  This is such a terrible experience.  I've never had a computer break down like this before.  Now i have to resort to using my old desktop PC running XP with very basic functions. please help . thank you

Answer:Frustrated. Windows 7 will not load. Screen turns off when loading Windows 7 login screen. Y560

I solved my own problem but Lenovo plants should do a  much better job with quality control during manufacturing. I fixed the overheating problem/LCD screen always turning off at the Windows 7 login screen problem by doing this: 1)  Take out the  laptop power battery and unplus the system.    Open up the laptop and apply a thin layer of Artic Silver 5 thermal paste on all the 3 chips under the heat sink aand fan.  See this guide for how to safely remove fan and heat sink:Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 Hardware Maintenance Manual V2.0.2)  I moved the top ram to the bottom slot and the bottom one into the upper slot. Seems like it works for now.  Hopefully not too many of you run into this problem too as it has wasted many hours of my time.

Hi was wondering if others experience this. Trying to figure out the cause and if there is a fix.

When I turn on or restart my computer after the teal windows logo with the spinning wheel the screen will flash off quickly then come back on black and then 10 seconds later show the lock screen.

It's kind of annoying to have this delay happening and wondering if it's normal or something that can be fixed.

Answer:Black Screen after teal windows before lock screen

Hi BFG,

That sounds normal to me. The only variation might be "how long" you pause on the black screen (while your boot is being processed). Now, for some, that black screen might flash for only a few seconds but for others, it could last quite some time. My advice is to do nothing and live with it.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. Please help. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. I'm hoping there will be a patch or service pack or some update that will fix this. Any ideas why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

Answer:Windows 8 Pro, screen goes black and back to lock screen

I had the same problem at first. Then one day the listing of all my apps disappeared. I did a refresh and lost a lot of programs but the files were still there. Then I noticed that the problem with the apps had fixed itself and they worked. My feeling is that the initial install wasn't complete and the refresh completed the install. Recently, after loading my Epson printer's CD, the apps once again disappeared. Had to do a system restore. Now I am having trouble with my screen just being black and not coming on at all...even after a reboot. Win8 has a lot of problems.

I have 2 issues that have shown up on my PC.

HJT Log follows the description of both issues.

I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad R61i (7732/A12), Vista Ultimate w/SP2, 2GB RAM. Security is Windows Live Onecare. All O/S patches up-to-date.

Issue 1: Random Sound

Periodically the system will start playing random sounds. The sounds have been song clips, or synthesized cat meows. Not files from my computer (heaven forbid!). If I close my browser (Firefox 3.0.11), the sounds will stop. I have already checked Firefox add-ons, which are: "Down Them All", "Move Media Player" and "Speed Dial". All are up-to-date.

Issue 2: Random "lock computer and go to login screen"

If I leave my computer for a short time (less than 5 minutes) periodically the system will lock the computer and go to the login screen.

I am not talking about a system / browser / application lock-up.
I am talking about the system leaving the user logged in, but going to the login screen. To get a visual of what I am talking about, press <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> and select "Lock This Computer" (or press windows-L).

Screen saver is set to "None".
Current power plan is "Timers off (Presentation)"

If I have not been specific enough, I greatly apologize.

I am very grateful to all of you who volunteer to help.

Use a very difficult password. We have plenty of password generators on majorgeeks.
Enable the system admin account and password protect it.

I've tried searching through the forum but can't see anyone who has a similar issue.

I can access the lock screen settings and I can see all available apps and have set a detailed status app and a couple of less detailed ones. However, when I actually get to the lock screen after having set the apps to appear, there is nothing but the time and date and WiFi in bottom-right corner.

Could this be because I am logging in locally rather than using a MS account?

Answer:Lock screen apps not showing up on lock screen

I'm having exactly the same issue, and I log in using a Microsoft account.

Can anyone tell me how to eliminate the lock screen preview and bypass the 'Sign In' button on the lock screen?

I often put my computer to sleep then to bring it back (in Windows 7) I would simply hit the space bar and turn on my mouse and it would go straight to my desktop. Now, I hit the space bar turn on my mouse, and it takes me to the lock screen preview then I hit the space bar and it takes me to a lock screen where I have to click 'Sign In' even though I have no password set.

I'm guessing I'll no longer be able to hit the spacebar, turn on my mouse and go directly to the desktop but if I can hit the spacebar, turn on the mouse, then hit the space bar one last time, that would be satisfactory.

Answer:Lock Screen Preview and Lock Screen nuisance

Turns out, the instructions I found to not require a password at the sign in screen did the trick for me.

Hi everyone. I'm having trouble with my Acer laptop. This is what happened. I recieved an automatic update for IE9. I tryed it out, I did not like the new settings. So, I tryed to delete it, it said that I do not have permission to do that. So I did a System Restore to go back to IE8 and it looked like it was doing it's thing. Then it went into the Blue Error Screen. I turned my laptop off and then back on after a minute or so. Everything looked ok, all the intros still come on but "Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit (Full Version) Login Screen or Welcome Screen" does not load at all. Just stays on a blank black screen with the mouse arrow. I tried using the F8 options on the laptop but they have not done anything so far. SafeMode does not work and apparently there are no Restore Points anymore. No Backups either. Command Prompt still works. I did a scan and it said there is nothing wrong but there is. Should I get the full version of Windows Vista Install Disk and use the Repair option from there? You know where the disk has options like Install, Uninstall, Repair? I'm not talking about a Recovery Disk with the same F8 options as my laptop.

After the Starting Windows screen a blank black screen with a cursor that I can move pops up that lasts a minute (shouldn't happen with SSD, used to be ~10 second boot). Afterwards the login screen will appear as normal and everything works as normal. This doesn't happen when I boot into safe mode.

I attached a list of start up services, installs, and scheduled tasks, along with my latest boot log.

Any suggestions?

Hello,
I have just set up a new laptop with Vista and installed all of the new updates but when I restart the computer or turn it on the please wait screen comes up for about 2 minutes before showing the login screen.

The PC I'm on now is lower spec and shows the login screen instantly. I have searched the internet and tried disabling start up programs to speed it up but to no avail does anyone have any idea what could be causing it to say Please wait for so long?

The specs of the PC are:

2gb Ram
2ghz Dual Core Processor
250gb Harddrive

Thanks in Advance

Answer:Windows Vista Please Wait Screen Appears for 2 Minuites Before the Login Screen

that usually means it is installing updates, if its a new laptop there may be a lot of updates for it to catch up on, it won't do them all at once, but over a period.

If you are using Windows 8, then it is important to note that the on-screen indicators for Num Lock and Caps Lock are not available in Windows 8. To know more about this, you can refer to the link below:http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/30035/~/no-num-lock-and-caps-lock-indicator If you are using Windows 7, you can check if following the steps below helps:1. Click on "Start".2. Type keyboard in the "Search" field.3. Double-click "Keyboard options".4. Go to "Key settings" tab and then, go to "Key settings" list.5. Locate and double-click "Caps Lock" and select the option "Display Caps Lock status on screen". Click "Finish".6. Follow Step 5 for Nums Lock as well. Hope this will resolve your issue.

Good afternoon,

I just did a clean install of 7 to fix errors with my laptop, and it fixed one, but not the other main issues,
My caps lock, and number lock button on the keyboard don't have a light on it and the pop up that is supposed to pop up doesn't show up on screen.
I figured by doing a clean install it would all magically appear again... I was wrong, I have tweaked everything I could think of looking/trying to change setting from the keyboard in control panel, (including messing around with ease of use) and Gateways so called "support" area was of no help, as well as googling the issue has led me down a path of useless tips, I have also looked on this forum for help.

Any help in this area would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Lenovo Y720 So, when I hit caps ock or num lock an on screen display tells me whether capslock or num ock has been pushed. While I appreciate it is helpful for some, in my case it become a hinderance. You need to remove "num lock" for single key print screen request, and if I have a short time frame, I am stuck without being able to screenshot until the num lock indicator goes away.  How do I turn off the on screen display.  Now, before you send me to the previously asked questions of similar nature, I have tried. There is no "display settings" in Control Panel. There is no "advanced display settings" on the settings panel. And there is no way to control it through NVIDIA or Intel graphics settings (that I can see).  Thanks kindly.

Hello, I'll go ahead and start from the very beginning. Thanks in advance though for taking a look at my problem.

About a month ago, my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart. Next time, generally it would work perfect.

So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

Just to let you know I'm running Raid0, and this is my first time running it. I'm not sure if this symptom is a common problem if one of the disks are going out. Does anyone know whats going on? Could it be a virus that messed with a boot.ini or any startup stuff? also, is there anyw... Read more

Hey, need some help yet again!

Yesterday, I downloaded Mission Against Terror (New MMOFPS), and I downloaded it. Upon updating with the patcher, my laptop went haywire. It started opening up random IE windows, slow speed, etc etc.

I did a whole memory scan, and a malware/adware/spyware scan. There were several viruses and whatnot, but what is important are the files: SVC2.exe and 2008.exe, you'll find it why later on. The anti-virus said that it had fixed/deleted everything.

So, I restarted my laptop, hoping that I'd get it up and running in safe mode for any further scans. Unfortunately, when I restarted it, after the windows 7 loading screen (which is right before login screen), a black screen appeared. With nothing at all. Not even a cursor. BLACK. JUST BLACK with NO keyboard access/mouse access. But, that's expected since it's BEFORE the login screen. It's the same with normal boot, boot that does that "last best used option" or whatever, safe mode, with networking, etc etc. All the same. Black screen.

Good thing I had WIN XP on my other hard drive. So, I booted up into WIN XP (where I'm posting this from), and did a FULL (NOT QUICK) system scan, to find the SAME Viruses YET AGAIN: SVC2.exe and 2008.exe, along with some other minor tracking cookies and what-not. Win XP (on second drive) is also having a few problems, like IE shutting down every second (using firefox now). Think this is a whole system prob. But, why? Didn't the antivirus-es fix it? I... Ok here is what I'd like to do:

I want to be able to lock my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with the desktop still showing.. I am a DJ at a club and when I walk away from the stage, I want to know that no one can go and mess around with the playlist, or any other stuff on my computer for that matter.. But I still want to have the playlist showing while the system is locked down.. Is it possible to do this??

I have seen a website where it has a program that allows you to lock down any program that you'd like to have locked (http://www.windows7download.com/win7.../shifxvnj.html), but I am not sure if this is a scam or if it's the real deal.

Any help int his would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Lock Windows 7 Down and keep screen on

What you really want to do, is to 'lock down' your keyboard and mouse, so that nobody can use them while you are away from your computer.

This product should do what you want:
Download KidKeyLock to Lock Keyboard and Mouse Functions on your PC

The following 'blurb' talks about a 'laptop', but this program will work on any computer.

Quote:

If you have toddlers at home and they treat your laptop just like one of their toys, you may want to try this simple software utility. Named as KidKeyLock, it prevents your kids or toddlers from accessing your laptop by locking both the keyboard and mouse selectively.

The software utility is very simple to be used. Once installed and launched, users can do a quick setup on how they intend the program to be used. Basically there are two sections: Mouse locks and keyboard locks. On the Mouse locks, users can select to lock left, middle, right buttons or mouse wheel. Whereas on the keyboard locks, users can choose to lock system key combinations, lock all keys except character keys or lock all of them at once.

Take note that the software utility is meant to prevent your kids by disabling certain input keys temporarily but if they intend to press the hard reset or the shutdown button on the computer itself, then it will not help in that situation. Anyway, if you think that it is helpful, do get a free download here as an immediate solution.

I hope this helps,
Art

Can anyone help?

I tried to disable the lock screen on windows 10 through regedit.
I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows
but instead of creating a new folder PERSONAL i went to the right pane and created a new DWORD (NoLockScreen) and set value to 1.
Now when power up my laptop it goes into diagnose mode and I have to do a restore point before I can get in.
I tried doing a serach for DWORD and No Lock Screen in regedit but cannot find it.
Would appreciate any help

Believe me I have scoured Google to solve this with no luck at all. I upgraded (free) from 7 to 10 a month ago and all is going well apart from the lock screen. Sometimes when I boot up I see the lock screen for the briefest moment before I get to the regular sign in screen. Win+L does not result in a Lock screen but the regular sign in screen (Blue window and bottom left options).

I have tried the NoLockScreen DWord registry option with no luck either. Both manually and as a 'reg' file insert. Lock screen is set on via settings and I can select Spotlight, background images and apps to show etc.

I do not have Gpedit.msc as I have the Home version of Win 10.

Any idea what might be amiss?

Answer:windows 10 no lock screen at all.

Murphy's Law dictates that when you post for a solution you instantly find it yourself.

Turns out that Dell Face Recognition Access software disables the Lock Screen. I never use it so uninstalled it on the off chance.

Most of us will keep very important and secret information and other stuff on desktop and on other drives which cannot be protected strictly and we will feel uncomfortable to leave it idle and go for other works. But still we want the system to be running in normal condition and must be do all the works assigned to it.
