windows 8.1 pricing models

Question: windows 8.1 pricing models

i just upgraded to 8.1 and microsoft wants me to buy a license--thats ok--but then it shows the price as 289$

my question--what do i get for this? can I use this later on another pc? my current pc is old and i don't want to have to buy another license when i change pc's within 1 yea or less.

i can go buy an oem 8.1 software for about 140$ that i understand is only good for 1 pc.
any insight on how this works??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: windows 8.1 pricing models

What did you upgrade from?

How did you manage to upgrade without buying a license beforehand?

If you were already running win 8.0 , there should be no charge, it is an update/service pack.

Good news if its true. Hopefully those prices aren't just promo prices. A $50 upgrade from Vista is extremely cool. It would be pretty hard to accuse Microsoft of gouging at that price.

Are there both upgrade and non-upgrade versions? It seems all the pricing information for Windows 8 ($40) and Windows 8 Pro ($70) has been for upgrade versions but perhaps I have it wrong and one version works either way.

If there is a more expensive non-upgrade version, what is the price?

Answer:Windows 8 Pricing for non-upgrade

There is a System Builder version which is a Full retail but no price has been announced.

Prelude:

From what I can gather there are 4 versions of windows 8:

* Regular - not for sale, only manufacturer pre-installed.

* Pro - For sale in computer supply stores, An upgrade from previous such as W7, Vista, XP.

* Pro - that will only enhance "regular" to Pro.

* RT - only for tablets, notebooks and such devices, manufacturer installed. A reduced version without some Pro features.

* W8 - Enterprise, Commercial, not for sale to the general public, only for corporations and government.

Pricing:

* W8 Pro upgrade. Windows has it on the Internet as a download for $39.99. The offer expires at the end of December 2012.

* W8 Pro upgrade from W7, Vista, XP, for sale in computer stores, Costco, Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA. Costco's price is $66.99. The others are $69.99.

* Windows Pro only for existing Win 8 regular already installed. Thus the regular manufacturer version is upgraded to Pro for $69.99. *( That would be actually a value of $69.99 plus &69.99 - $139.98 ).

The Windows Pro at Staples has on the price tag: "Retail price $199, $130 off. Offer expires February 2013.

So anyone who is contemplation purchasing a Windows Pro should be aware of/about the coming price increases. Looks as though in March 2013 it will cost everyone $199 so far as I can ascertain now.

Apparently installing Win 8 to upgrade Vista and XP will require re-installing all current software presently on the computer whereas a Win 7 will not.

According to Neowin, Microsoft plans to reveal the prices of Windows 7 in mid June.As you might now Windows 7 is rumoured to be out by October 23rd as per reports from Acer or to be specific in the holiday season.Paul Thurrot says that the date is October 15th.
According to the NDA schedule on Tech ARP, OEMs are already aware of how much it will cost them to install on new systems and retailers have also been informed of how much the boxed editions will cost them to sell.Dell say that they already have the news about the pricing and also add that the pricing is costlier than Vista.
The schedule details give the announcement date as just a few weeks from now in mid-June.Ars technica had previously said about the leaked pricing list but that news was from a unconfirmed source so that turned false. But if you are a student you should be able to get Windows 7 at a discount or even completely for free.

I'm going to have to re-buy my windows licences because I am going to replace 3 PCs primary components; Motherboard, CPU and RAM. The only active component not being replaced is the HDD.

When I talked to Microsoft they said I have to re-buy Windows. The $1300 I spent on licences When Windows 7 was first released is now a dead investment.

It's no wonder that people pirate windows!

When doing research on pricing I came across these sites...

Microsoft - 3x3pk Win7 Ult64B+10x1PK DVDRW - Catalogue | Alphastore

and

MICROSOFT GLC-00894 - 3x3pk Win7 Ult64B+10x1PK DVDRW

Both have the same product code. Now I'm assuming 3 x 3pk only means 3 licences, not nine, since retailers are renowned for splitting 3pk OEI OEM DVD packs and selling off individually.

I've emailed both companies twice now and asked for clarification on number of licences and how many unique software keys I actually get with the purchase. But neither have answered.

Anyone have any ideas why one price can be more than 5 times the other, when neither say upgrade, full or OEM??

Anyone have any recommendations on the cheapest place to buy 3 copies of legit licences with individual keys... I am assuming of course that each machine must have a unique key..

thanks

Vista made me want to puke. So I took my old 32-bit XP home cd and reinstalled old reliable.

After reading various little snippets of information about W7 I'm getting kind of excited. I'm really tired of not being able to take full advantage of my Q6600, I know I can get a 64-bit version of XP but there really isn't a point.

Anyone know when this W7 will be released and what kind of pricing we'll be looking at?

Answer:[Windows 7] - Release date and pricing?

About a year after the first public beta. So if that comes out next month, your looking at Q4 2009/Q1 2010. I'm sure that Microsoft would like to have it out in time for the holidays if at all possible, unlike Vista.

I must admit that I find it interesting to hear comments like "Vista made me puke." Windows 7 is not going to as big of a jump over Vista as Vista was over XP. Microsoft will no doubt fix the biggies that were unpopular in Vista like UAC, but its not going to be a big shift. Same driver model and the like.

Microsoft today announced Windows 7 retail pricing, upgrade information, launch details, and a preorder deal. The software giant has reduced the price on its most popular retail Windows product, the Home Premium upgrade version, by approximately 10 percent (this varies based on the market). In the US, this means a drop from $130 to $120, a savings of $10. For the Home Premium full version, the price drops from $240 to $200. Those are the only differences when comparing Windows Vista prices to Windows 7 prices after Microsoft made cuts in In February 2008 (compared to the ones announced in September 2006).

Hi guys,

New to the forum and have searched for some answers on this topic.

I have a small business with 16 computers I need to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. The computers currently have Windows 10 Home. (Side note: Will I have any issues with drivers, etc etc upgrading these computers from Home to Pro???)

Is it worth it to purchase volume licensing vs just buying OEM copies? Also when I go on CDW's site, are the "Open license" the ones I need to purchase? And are these licenses only good for 1 computer or all? (some say one license, others say one user, one is labeled 500+).

Any help is greatly appreciated. I need to get this figured out ASAP.

Answer:Windows 10 Pro Volume licensing (very confusing pricing)

A volume license is restricted to a certain number of instances, but you can move them around as you see fit. Thus, as long as you deactivate the license for Computer A and then activate the license for Computer B, you've effected a license transfer from one machine to the other. Don't buy OEM Licenses: while cheap, they're (a) supposed to be provided by people who sell them with a computer and installing them on some other machine technically violates the license and (b) once installed, the license stays with that machine and cannot be transferred from one PC to another. As for reputable vendors to contact for volume licenses, I've done business with Software Wholesale International (now part of Crayon) for years, and they continue to offer the best prices on MSDN subscriptions and volume licenses I've found anywhere for small-timers like me. You may want to check them out as a point of comparison with CDW (whom I've also done business with).
HTH,

PS: volume licenses can also come as part of a subscription deal through Open Value offerings (Microsoft Open Programs | Microsoft Volume Licensing). These may be a better deal for your business, as long as you don't mind paying them every year for your Windows seats (and other software).

PPS: working with the Microsoft Volume Licensing Center is a major PITA. Look for a vendor who will help you navigate their systems and get your account set up so you can access and use your licenses properly. SWI has videos to get people... Read more

Hi there
available if you want to test it you can get a download via TECHNET SUBSCRIPTION.

Of course you can't use the technet download in a commercial organisation - but for developers etc who want experience in using etc etc then a technet subscription ~250 - 300 USD is a NO BRAINER IMO.

Also good for HOME users who want to learn about installing and using Servers.

If you look for promo codes you can probably get a discount too on your technet subscription.

Incidentally Students *might* be able to get a free or cheap version of W2008 Server too - same conditions not for commercial use of course.

Note the download from Technet doesn't have an expiry unlike the Free Trial download and you can use several copies.

When it comes down to Windows 7 special offerings, Microsoft still has one or two aces up its sleeve. While it revealed the official pricing details for the upgrade and full retail boxes of Windows 7, and went live with a program designed to allow consumers in select markets to buy the Home Premium and Professionals SKUs of the OS at considerable discounts, the Redmond company has yet to unveil discount initiatives and price tags for additional offerings and flavors of the next iteration of the Windows client. This is the case with the Windows 7 Family Pack and the Windows Anytime Upgrade options. Microsoft?s free Windows 10 upgrade deal is looking better and better all the time. For if you already own a genuine Windows PC, you could be saving yourself upwards of a huundred to almost two hundred dollars.

Microsoft confirmed Monday that the company will sell Windows 10 at retail for the same price as Windows 8.1: $119 for Windows 10 Home, $199 for Windows 10 Professional, and $99 for a Windows 10 Pro Pack to jump from a licensed copy of Windows 10 Home to the Professional version.

That means, unfortunately, that the price leaked by Newegg's retail site over the weekend for Windows 10 Home was incorrect. NewEgg pegged the price of the Windows 10 Home Edition at $109, and the Professional version at $149. It also claimed that the software would be released on August 31.

On July 29, according to Microsoft, you?ll be able either to download Windows 10 or buy a new Windows 10 PC from retailers. And if you click the ?reservation link? that Microsoft is pushing via its most recent updates to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, you can apparently sign up to preload the software just as soon as it?s ready. Microsoft promises that upgrades will be free for the ?supported lifespan? of the device, although it hasn?t explained what that phrase actually means.

As of press time, NewEgg changed the release date of the software to reflect the July 29 launch date that Microsoft officially announced early Monday morning; the company has not yet announced a revision to its pu... Read more

Microsoft Sets Windows 7 Pricing, Upgrade Programs

Want to get Windows 7 on the cheap? Well then, it looks like pre-ordering is the way to go. Then again, the "regular" prices aren?t too bad either, hit the link for all the info.
From Friday through July 11, consumers in the U.S. will be able to buy an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home premium for $49 or Windows 7 Professional for $99. That offer is good for both XP and Windows Vista PCs, regardless of whether someone has been trying out the pre-release version of the operating system. That matches the details in a memo from Best Buy that leaked earlier this month.

When boxed copies of Windows 7 go on sale on October 22, Microsoft plans to charge $119 for Home Premium, $199 for Professional and $219 for Ultimate. The Home Premium upgrade is down $40 from the product's original price, although the Vista product had already gotten a price cut along the way. The Professional and Ultimate versions are priced similar to where Microsoft was with Vista. The upgrade prices apply to those moving from a previous version of Windows to Windows 7, but only those from Windows Vista will be able to upgrade without doing a clean installation of the product.
The full versions of Windows 7--the editions for those without a copy of Windows--will be priced at $199 for Home Premium, $299 for Professional and $319 for Ultimate. The Ultimate and Professional editions are again on par with their Vista counterparts, while Home Premium i... Read more

Windows Vista was a huge advantage for Apple -- since it launched and up until last quarter, Apple was aggressively taking market share from Microsoft. Last quarter, Microsoft responded with a strong marketing campaign and stopped the erosion. Apple got a bit more aggressive in the second quarter and it is not yet clear whether it has started to take share again. However, in looking ahead to the second half of the year, Apple had itself positioned to take a massive amount of market share from Microsoft in the third quarter, due to a combination of aggressive upgrade pricing and actually having its new OS and hardware available in that quarter. In what continues to look like a tennis match, Microsoft has struck back with an aggressive, though short-lived, massively discounted preorder program which, based on recent surveys, may result in the company mitigating Apple's attack and announced initial pricing. I wrote earlier on Apple's move into the enterprise. Let's now go over the pricing program, discounts, upgrade recommendations and a few closing thoughts on Windows 7.

In every geography, pricing for Windows 7 will generally mirror or be under pricing for Windows Vista. In addition, there will probably be sales specials during the fourth quarter that will be announced close to launch... Read more

Apple hasn't announced any solid Snow Leopard release date, so do not be surprised if we suddenly see it released pre-Oct 22nd just to stick another thing in Microsoft's back... I sure as hell won't be, I'm expecting it around the time they have the next shindig announcing new iPods, etc... potentially a new Mac mini also among other things... with Snow Leopard released either the same day or right on the heels of those announcements.

Apple is fairly predictable these days. So much for their "Thinking Different" concepts...

This is very good and interesting question but only Toshiba marketing department can offer exact answer to this.
Somewhere I read that Microsoft will release Windows7 at October 22th and I presume first Toshiba models with Windows7 will be offered in November.
Probably Toshiba will offer whole 500 series like A500, P500, L500, U500 and all other new business line notebooks like Portege and Tecra.

In month or two we will know more about it.

2) SECURITY tab --> Secure Boot --> set SECURE BOOT to [DISABLED]
3) Go to STARTUP tab --> UEFI/Legacy Boot --> set to [BOTH]

Acer E1-531 is not on the list :http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/windows10-eligible-modelsAny idea - why ?Has anybody tried/managed to get it upgraded to Windows 10 ?

Answer:Acer E1-531 NOT on the list models for Windows 10 ...

The list only shows those models which need updated drivers, most models work fine without Acer needing to package new drivers. If Microsoft says you are ready to upgrade, do a full backup and go for it.

We've seen a number of topics and questions from users whose Acer model is not listed in the Windows 10 update support list, which I'll link below.

The list that Acer provided is for products that we are committed to helping support running the Windows 10 operating system. Microsoft has also stated that they have worked very hard to make sure that the upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 is available for as many users as possible and that the Windows 10 operating system will work with as many different hardware components as possible.

If your unit is not on this list, you're still eligible for Microsoft's upgrade to Windows 10; however, Acer cannot guarantee full compatibility with all aspects of the PC. Again, Acer is not preventing users from taking advantage of the upgrade offer with Windows 10; however, if your unit is not listed, it's possible that you may run into trouble with specific components of your PC not working well, or at all, with Windows 10. The Acer Community is a great place for users in the second scenario to be able to work together to find sufficient drivers or applications that will support their needs.

Hi

Is any Tecra Models support Windows 2003 ?, if I Purchase any Tecra model with Vista business ( or XP PRofessional), is it possible to install os W3K on this laptop ?,

if so, please let me Know the same, or is there any official link which will give the dependencies of any of these model ?, thanks

Regards

Swami

Answer:Is any Tecra Models support Windows 2003 ?

First of all: toshiba DOES not support any server operating system on their machines. Do you know the difference between an *MOBILE COMPUTER* and an *SERVER* ?

If you know where the difference is then you can answer yourself why toshiba does not give any support in this direction.
The other point (to come to the technical part) is that you surely can install Windows Server 2003 on your machine. And you can search for drivers. But no one here could give you some help, you?re completely on your on. (And NO, there is NO official link :/ )

Cheers

I have two of the same HP All-in-One computers that are both running the same version of Windows (AE), but when I open explorer the views are different. One shows icons under Quick Access, and one shows folders. How do you change them? I cannot find any option to "display as folder" or "display as icons". Is there even a way? Both computers are new, but one is from Jan, and the other is from last month. Could HP have simply changed it at the factory? I also have an HP laptop, and it shows icons. I even searched for "Windows 10 Quick Access", and looked at images of it, and I've seen it both ways, so I'm thinking it's a setting somewhere.

Answer:Same computer models, same Windows version, different appearance?

Right click on quick access then options then view options are there

I would like to bay in pre-order Windows 8 upgrade for Windows 7 or XP computers and install it on my Tecra M11-13X model. I wondering if it will be working properly - of course I think mostly about drivers?

Maybe somebody have tested Windows 8 on Tecra M11 in windows participate program and can help me?

I will be very grateful for any answer!

Answer:Windows 8 on TECRA M11 models - review needed

I don?t see any serious reasons why Win 8 should not work on the Tecra M11

But since Win 8 is not officially on the market (need to wait few days) you will need to wait for some reviews and drivers from Toshiba

We are deploying Windows 10 64 bit Enterprise and I recently updated two models:  the Latitude E5540 & Latitude E6530.  On the two laptops I worked both models were very slow.  I updated all the hardware drivers - Nic, Video, Chipset.  We are deploying Windows 10 build 1607.  We are not deploying the Creator's Update - 1703 yet.  Both these laptops are on Dell's compatibility list as being tested.
To secure our laptops we also use Microsoft Bitlocker which makes them even slower.  Has anyone come across issues?

Answer:Both Latitude E5540 & E6530 laptop models slow after installing Windows 10.

Are they equipped with 8G of RAM?  If not, they're going to be swapping a lot to disc - which will be slow if they're running conventional hard drives rather than SSDs.

Hello,
I have one question so far:
should we all brake our nails trying to open the back cover to replace batteries and sim cards? I do have nails as I play guitar. Was it hard for Nokia to make it simpler and easier, friendlier to the users, and specially for women?
In general, I do not know why Microsoft selected Nokia for their phones. I'd prefer Samsung. I hope Windows OS will be available soon on other phones. First impression about the Lumia 640/XL phone in general - a lot of plastic and it screams cheap... This applies to phone models only, not Windows OS.
Thanks, Art.

Hi, I'm currently a student and just started my last semester of undegrad. Unfortunately old POS acer's screen got messed up a few weeks ago and I need a new laptop. I'm strongly considering the U510, but I'm really nervous about wifi and trackpad issues. I'm considering buying it from costco, it's $699. The one they're selling ships with windows 8, so I'm assuming they're newer than the ones that shipped with windows 7 (which was on the site a few weeks ago). Has anyone who bought one of the 8510's noticed these two issues? Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo U510--do the newer models (ship with windows 8) still have wifi and touchpad isssues?

hi thehammer401,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

The only thing I noticed about the Touchpad is the sensitivity - which is a common thing as when you are typing, the Touchpad suddenly jumps around the screen. This can easily be fixed by lowering the sensitivity of the Palm and Touch sensitivity settings of the pad (you need to:

1. Open the Control Panel > Hardware & Sound and look for Mouse2. Under the  Mouse Properties, go to the Device Settings or Elan Tab then click Options or Settings and look for Sensitivity.

Check this website for a sample guide on how to adjust a touchpad's sensitivity. As for the WiFi connectivity, never got a problem so far.

Hope this helps.

This is getting crazy. We are less than 6 weeks from D-Day (Oct. 26) and we do not have pricing on a single Windows 8 device. This was not a big deal on past Windows launches as price were expected to stay the same because the products were mostly the same. But with Windows 8 we are expecting one new product category (ARM devices) and two greatly expanded product lines (Hi power Core iX series tablets/convertables and low power Atom/AMD powered tablets/convetables). We are so close to launch date that companies will have had to roll into production mode already for launch devices in order to build up an inventory and get devices shipped to their destination stores. The Best Buys and Amazons and the like will have already placed orders for launch devices, and would have needed to know MSRP to make ordering desicions. So why keep the consumer in the dark? Why not make some announcements and let the marketing machine begin to build up some hype. There are a large number of people that don't follow technology news that that don't even know a new version of Windows is about to launch.

Answer:Can we get some pricing already?

Question: Pricing up a Job

If you are just starting out and dont know much about pricing a job, how do you get a good figure a client, and you are happy with??

for example...

networking 6 machines in 6 different rooms to a hub then router to allow internet access.
settting up 6 logins and a small file server.

is there anywhere that gives a guide or indication of charging prices for general contract jobs?

Answer:Pricing up a Job

I think pricing depends on alot of things.

1. The Area, where I live I charge $30.00 per hour, people think that's alot around here but if I was in Denver charging the same people would think that was cheap.

2. Experience, when I get a new tech on my staff we don't charge as much on his jobs because it's kind of a given that he is going to have some problems at first. After a month or 2 of doing work we raise him up to the standard rate. I don't feel it's fair to make the customer pay the same rate to have somebody who's new to the business. Either cut the rate or charge them for less time than it actually took.

Networking machines can sometimes be hard, if pulling the cable is going to be a pain in the ass then I usually charge more than if they have say a drop ceiling through the whole building or raised floor.

First I figure out what materials I would need, price them out, walk the cable run's and get a general idea of how much cable I need. If the machines are all the same and an Operating System that I know shouldn't give me much trouble (Windows 2000 and up). Depending on what all they need on the file server. Usually I figure 2 to 5 hours to configure a basic server, get all the hardware, software configured, add users, setup shares. Sure it usually doesn't always take that long but I would rather bid a little high and come in low as opposed to having to go back and charge more...customers really dont' like that.

Question: Ram Pricing ?

Im just wondering why these two sticks of ram are so different
in price. They are both the same except for a difference of 512
megs but the price differs by $150. Im just curious.........

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...144-202&depa=0
kingtson 512MB===$55.01

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...141-429&depa=0
Kingston 1GB===$206

Answer:Ram Pricing ?

First of all, this is computers. The more you have, the more expensive it'll get per increase. The bigger you get, the price increases exponentionally. Like of couse 1gig will not be double the price of 512, cauze then under the same logic i'd go buy 2gb ram for 4x the price of 512. But wait, 256 mb, is cheaper, so why don't i just buy 2 gigs of ram for 8x w/e 256 mb cost?

Anyways, that won't make up for 100% of the cost. I think that the qualitiy of the ram varies. So the 1 gig of ram is higher qulity than the 512 ram.

Alienware vs PCManiacs
Below is the default configuration of the Alienware Area-51® 7500

Below is the keyboard you get with the Alienware PC as you can see it is a generic keyboard, thus we can assume so is the mouse.

Below is the same thing from PCManiacs

PRICING:
Alienware:
Sub Total $2,871.00
Freight $149.00
GST $274.55
Total $3,020.00

PC Maniacs
Sub-Total: $1,527.00
Courier (Star Track Express - Deliver To Postcode: XXXX): $92.00
Total: $1,619.00

Answer:Alienware Pricing

Are you REALLY certain that Alienware is the best choice for your needs? Lately, we find them to be considerable trouble, both in early failures, and in difficulties getting parts and tech support. Perhaps tech support is better in Australia?

Hello, I was researching RAM for a build I am planning to buy this Black Friday (Can't wait ) and I noticed that I found some really cheap RAM and I don't know if this is a unreliable pos, or if this is a genuinely good find.

I know that lower CAS latency, higher frequency, and if you want your computer to run cooler, a lower voltage will make for nice ram.

This is the RAM I came across:
Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT4G3D1609DS1S00

For the most part (85%) of the reviews are 5 eggs, and it is $10 off with a promo code. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy these?

Also, I am going to be getting the Sabertooth Z77 motherboard and an i7 3770 and I was curious if anyone could tell me if this RAM is compatible with my planned setup.

Answer:Curious about RAM pricing...

Well depends on what you are going to use for the new build but the other RAM looks ok for what you have now.

Oh meant to mention if you idn't now turn of the defrag you don't need it with the SSD. Plus take a look at this if you already haven't - more speed.

Question: 4GB memory pricing

The configurator for the W520 shows a delta price of $160 to add 4gb of memory to the base 4gb. The price of additonal memory on the accessory site is $62! P/N 55Y3711  PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 DDR3 SODIMM . What's up with this? Looks like a $100 error in the configured price. Anyone else see this?

Answer:4GB memory pricing

Doubt there is a mistake. It's all marketing and profit. Most people who are not necessarily hardware savvy will pay the extra money (often without knowing the price difference) to get the amount of RAM they want.I ordered my W510 with a base single 4GB module purposely, and added the "accessory" 4GB model in the same order and installed it myself for 8GB total, but with a large savings for installing it myself. I even called to ask Lenovo at the time of order if they would install the extra module during build, but they of course would not ;-)

I am in the process of looking for a paid for OEM for 10 Pro as I want to keep my 7 Pro key and buying one of those is just as expensive according to my local dealer - $209 + p&p which is pretty good.

Now I am also thinking at the same time what sort of mark up these dealers make over what they but the software in for resale as soem EBay sellers for example (not that I would buy from them) are offering the key but no DVD for s little as $120. So in my mind making say even a 25% mark up on what sellers pay Microsoft for what exactly do Microsoft produce their software for??

Answer:Just wondering re pricing

It probably depends upon how many OEM licenses they purchase at one time, but I don't know for sure. It violates Microsoft licensing agreement to use OEM system builders licenses for personal use on computers that you are not building to sell (except for Windows 8.0).

Question: BT Pricing Policy

I have had line rental from BT on the same number for over 20 years and BT has been my ISP since the days when dial-up was the only option. I have had broadband from them since the maximum speed available was 512kbs. Because this has happened gradually over the years, my broadband (option 2) is being charged as if it were a stand-alone service at £20.50 per month, whereas (ignoring introductory offers) a new customer taking the same services as I have would pay £18 per month for the broadband. I am about to take the issue up with BT, but was wondering whether anyone else had been in the same situation and what the result was.

Answer:BT Pricing Policy

They are open on the phone to haggling, or it seems like it at the time!
Heavy hint that if they cannot do better you will move elsewhere.
The best you can hope for is one of their bargain contracts which must last a year to avoid penalties. I asked for another £3 less per month (nearly a year ago). No they couldn't do that but would give me a £36 discount at the start.
I still feel like someone who has "missed the boat" but I'm not sure quite how.
The service has been good and snag free. If you haven't had a shiney Home Hub yet, you will have one thrown in. "No" I couldn't have another chunk off instead of a second hub. They still sent me another hub anyway!

I have a client that is in need of some upgrades with the current system that they are working with. This client has recently discovered a virus that has created some problems with his programs. His current environment consists of 4 personal computers with internet capabilities on 2 pc's, 1 scanner, 1 laser jet printer, 1 cadjet 2 plotter, and 1 hub for networking, windows 98, and microsoft office 97. I will provide for this client a backup tape unit for offsite storage. Anti-virus software for all computers, personal firewall for small business, windows 2000 for all pc's, and microsoft office 2000 for all pc's internet capabilities for all pc's. When providing this type of service for a client, what would you charge a client and how do you arrive at a fair price for your client. As you can tell I am fairly new at providing services for clients and if I do a decent job for this client it could lead to other opportunities for me.

Answer:Pricing proposals

How long is a piece of string?

You should be thinking in terms of % markup on the hardware and software that you are supplying, and as its a lot you can afford to take less % than if it was just a couple of items.

On labour you need to set your hourly rate, then either go with that and give an estimate of the time to the client, (always over-estimate so that when it takes less time the client is happy) or work it out and give a fixed price to the client for a set number of works/jobs.

Make it clear that the set price is for the works specified, and if they add anything else its extra on top at your hourly rate. Otherwise you can come a cropper, as I have never been to a client site yet where they haven't said "Oh, while you are here, can you just...." which will really upset things on a fixed price contract.

Hope that gives you food for thought.

For those awaiting the imminent arrival of AMD's Vishera (aka Piledriver, aka Bulldozer rev.2, aka Bulldozer rev. C0), HotHardware have published pricing via Shopblt.com.

If AMD's strategy is consistant with the previous Bulldozer release, then pricing indicates the parts' relative performance merits in relation to Intel's current mainstream CPU range.
At $US 253, the FX-8350 launches at approximately the same price as its predecessor - FX-8150 MSRP at launch being $245. AMD seem to have noted that the FX-8120 took a sizeable chunk of the 8150's possible sales, being some $40 cheaper but offering comparable performance. AMD aren't being nearly so generous this time around.
Launch is rumoured to be October 18

Question: Software pricing

Why does the price change when you go to the web site to download? An example is DSL 3.9 which is listed as $15 and the web site says $24.95.

Answer:Software pricing

Retailers can change their prices to what they like, providing they cover the buy-in costs and make profit on it.

The RRP (recommended retail price) is just a guideline for retailers to follow.

I have a client who is looking for between 50-100 off-lease (used) LCD monitors for export in decent condition (minor scratches on case/base OK but screens in good condition).

Having never shopped for such a large quantity before, I'm curious if anyone has experience on what decent wholesale pricing should be. As of now, the lowest I've found for a bulk (50+) order of 19" screens is about $60 each - not that great a deal since I can buy new-in-box 19" units (entry level HP or Dell) in the $90-$100 per unit range.

There are plenty of recycling/used PC vendors in the area - I'm curious if anyone has any pricing experience or negotiating tips for getting a better deal.

(If I buy this quantity, I will test every monitor, verify the power supply is compatible with 220/240 volt use and get a LARGE cash deposit from the client prior to purchasing. )

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Answer:Used LCD monitor pricing?

All depends of the quality of the screens,if they are budget screens for offices or schools I'd shoot lower than $60,ATM that translates into about £40 each over here which is pretty expensive for junk:-D

I'd half the new price twice, about $100 to $50 then half again for bulk so about $30.Most of these whole sale places pick them up for next to nothing from businesses and schools so you can really barter with them, they will usually still make money whatever they sell them for the $60 is BS they know you will knock them down a sheetload.

As for bartering tell them they are junk:-D Remind the guy about the lifespan of the backlight, criticise their storage.Speak to them in person Don't act like you want to buy them, start at $20,lie and say your shopping around for the cheapest deal but don't tell him the price you want beaten when he asks say you rather not say but you'v had multiple offers cheaper than he just said.Pretend your still deciding whether it will be economical to buy them or not.

"Its not gonna be worth me going this route at that price."

Remember your not out shopping for monitors your out seeing if you should be shopping for monitors The further he thinks you are away from buying the more he will bend.

Most of all be light hearted and not serious, jovial. Its much easier say things and get away with them if you laugh after you've said it,people drop their guard when they are happy and having a good time so a... Read more

Hi,

I have seen loads of stories since Microsoft announced the pricing for Windows 7 last week and I've read several stories that seem to conflict with each other. The main conflict seem to be over the "No upgrade in Europe" thing. I currently have a machine running Windows 7 RC that was originally a Vista PC.

Can some explain to me what the options (e.g. what price) will be to upgrade this computer Windows 7 Home Premium once the full version is released in October.

Also, apart from that, will I be able to "in place" upgrade from Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 release? (e.g. upgrade instead of wipe and install???)

Thanks.

Andrew.

Question: Design Pricing

I have been asked to quote for the design of a full colour products cataloge. The cover design both inside and out. and the rest photos and descriptions all supplied by them. Its the first large job we have been asked about and estimate its arround 50 to 60 hours work. Can anyone help on approx pricing???

Answer:Design Pricing

Know your competitors? The Cover is going to be both the major expense and the decider. From remarks from designer daughter .......who has clients in international food industry - she deals in telephone numbers and "pitches" for a contract. (I know she uses a photographer who charges £500/day just for a retainer!)All this just for labels! At the other end there are paste-ups for catalogues and price lists and here I guess you think of a number, keep it cheap and cheerful and don't expect too much by it.OK you expect 50-60 hrs expense but must add a margin for that cover, unless you feel you will only have one chance then "guesstimate" a little less. What a load of waffle from one with no personal experience but who just hopes to throw a few ideas into the melting pot

Hi all . I'm a CPU/network tech with NO experiece in programing. My largest client needs aninventory control rogram, but they're quite set in thier ways of how they like everything to look, act, function, etc. I'd like to hire out an access programmer for them, and they've inquired as to what the cost of such a service might be. Before I go a "rent a coder" or any of that, I was wondering if you guys who do programming for aliving had a ballpark figure. It's simply inventory control, that needs the ability for laymen to add, remove, or "Rent" parts into and out of inventory. (also invoicing, as the parts have rental prices).

I hate to ask what might be a "dumb question," but when you don't know the price of goods, you can get taken to the cleaners. I also am quite aware works-for-hire prices vary, but a general idea would be a great benifit. $200? $500? $1000? $5000? $10,000?

Thanks again : )

Hi, I was just on Lenovo's shopping website and am wondering why the T430 and T530 both start at exactly the same price (779 USD) with the same hardware. However, the T530 is obviously wider, heavier, and has a larger screen, so one would expect for the T530 to cost slightly more. This makes me wonder: does the T430 have a slighty better and stronger chassis than the T530, or are there any cost cutting methods done on the T530? It simply doesn't make sense to price both at the same starting price when one seems to use more material than the other. Thanks. -Brian

My Thinkpads: T42 (GPU failure), T60, W530W530: Windows 7 Pro | i7-3720qm | FHD screen | 256gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD | 500GB Ultrabay HDD | 16gb Crucial RAM | Nvidia K1000m

Answer:t430 and t530 pricing

The T430 chassis should be on par with the T530 in terms of strength. Cost of laptop is NOT determined by the price of materials used alone, there are also many factors that weighs in. If that was the case then X1 Carbon would be cheaper than a T530, since one weighs less and thus uses less material. Historically, Ultraportable and lighter/more compact machines tend to cost more, since people whom wants portability tend to willing to pay more for weight savings technology, and the ability to take machines for trips. While more heavier machines tend to cost less, since the bulk factors decrease portability, and hence people can always opt for desktops, so they are priced competitively against the desktop machines to make them more appealing price wise. T530 uses the same chassis as the W530, and do you want to find it weak?

Another way to think of the pricing on these machines is that, Lenovo slightly inflated the T430 pricing due to the portability factor, and that the T530 pricing is where you should be paying.

Hi all,           I've been waiting for the release for the S430 for ages and I've just seen that it's finally up on the Lenovo website to purchase for Ireland. However, I'm a little disappointed because the price is 969Euro for the cheapest model. Previous indiciations would be that it would be around the 800Euro mark and I've seen a link somebody else posted for German website (don't ship to Ireland) where it costs 769Euro. Therefore it seems over priced compared to previous indiciations. Questions I have are1) Is the Lenovo website generally more expensive that other online retailers?2) How frequently or do Lenovo ever offer substanial discounts on their online offering?3) Does anyone know if the S430 will be released to online retailers and if so, how soon after a release does this normally happen4) Is there any online sites that people would recommend for me to keep watching that offer cheaper prices but reliable customer service and ship to Ireland Thanks in advanceShane

Hello, I am student and a thinkpad enthusiast.I was looking at the x1 laptop when it came out in the US, with 1199dollar pricing. To my disappointment I couldnt get it shipped to Finland, so I waited a while until it was released in Europe aswell. However, the pricing is very high for the same laptop: 1650dollars! - 450dollar difference And this is with the same exact parts! With i7, 256gb ssd, QHD (nontouch) screen it's already 2400dollars in Finland! while in the US it's 1870!-650 dollar difference   why such a big difference? I am pretty sad about this, and it forces me to consider a competitors laptop.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x1 3rd gen Pricing

I'm not an expert on international pricing, but my guess is that the difference is due to the VAT.

Based on the history of past windows OS's, is it possible to estimate how much cheaper the full versions of Windows 7 would be after a year? Specifically the professional or ultimate versions?

I'm using XP Pro and I'm very comfortable with it and don't feel like I need a new OS just because it's new and has the latest bells and whistles. My 2 factors for deciding to upgrade depend on price and future OS plans from Microsoft.

For price considerations, I can get the full version of Win 7 Professional for $100. Should I wait to upgrade to Win 7 professional to see if prices will get better, or is this already a price that even waiting won't beat?

As for future OS's, is it worth it to get 7 if Microsoft is going to come out with a new one in several years? How long do you think 7 is going to last? XP's had a very long lifespan, so if it's going to be anything like that, I would consider upgrading. But if not, maybe I can hold on to XP for a few more years for the next OS.

Given these 2 factors, any recommendations?

I started with a pre-beat version in Dec 2008, then all the differenet versions to the retail release. Win7 will have a long productive lifespan. $ 100 is a good price at the present time. Try it, you'll like it.

What would be a normal price range for custom software?? Lets say that someone came up to me and wanted me to develop some kind of software for their business. What would I charge them?

Thanks!

And, yes, I know that it would depend upon the complexity of the software. I just wanted to get a general range.

Answer:Pricing for custom software

I don't believe there is any rule of thumb for ball park figures. If you are makign Software as a business then you are going to apply the rules of business for your pricing...
What are your costs for building the software?
What time frame are you looking at?
Are you hoping to make a profit from the software? If so what sort of %age?
What sort of maintenance are you going to offer to do on it?

What sort of alternatives does the potential customer have to you? How much are they prepared to write the software for? Are you going to have to undercut them?

Professional Business Software (especially tailored solutions as opposed to Off The Shelf can be much more costly... I don't think you are going to get a nice figure off us... you have to offset those factors and probably others to determine a cost...

Sorry its a pretty vague answer but your question leaves a lot in the open too.... Hope it helps anyway!

During the last months I have purchased two models Yoga 700 11". I am absolutely excited about the device and its capabilities and performance: great display (Full Hd + touch screen), high performance (Intel m3), fast boot times and data access (256 Gb SSD), long standby and operation times (due to low/optimized power consumtion - Intel m).For a short period this model was available for 499? in Germany and I made the deal! In my view this is a phenomenal value for price ratio. And there is nothing comparable available at competition! Unfortunately Lenovo product managers realized this fact too. So the pahsed out the models of Yoga 700 and replaced by the new model named Yoga 710. In terms of features it is more or less the same (less I/O but metal case).BUT: prices start at 789? now (699$ in the US) !!! I think it would have a great opportunity for Lenovo to place a top seller with the previous model and pricing of Yoga 700.
