Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

Question: Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)

However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.

With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.

Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.

Preferred Solution: Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

Hello Crosspatch,

I suppose one way would be to disable screen saver password protection to prevent it from basically locking the PC and asking for a password when you resume from screen saver.
Screen Saver Password Protection -Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums
The only drawback is that you would then need to lock the PC when you do want it to be password protected when unlocking. If you like, the desktop context menu added by either tutorial below can help make it easier to lock the PC.

Windows XP Professional SP3 with all latest updates.

First noted in that ipconfig and ping operate in a delayed mode. Ipconfig takes 10 -60 seconds to respond. Ping is the same.

If you use ping www.google.com -t the ping never stops responding.
If I run pingtest.bat that reads
ping www.google.ca
pingtest.bat

It will run ping 3-4 times before hanging again for 10-30 seconds then repeat.
The delay seems to effect any application that uses network access. When you select reply in outlook you get the same delay.

If the workstation service is stopped the delay goes away but returns as soon as the workstation service is re-enabled.

We have 40 computers in a 100 computer network with this issue. Doing a clean install seems to resolve the issue. The 40 computers are all the same. Intel DG35EC boards

I have recently installed a Windows 2003 server with 10 Windows XP SP3 workstations logging onto it. On some of the workstations there is a delay of 5 to 10 minutes "applying your local settings" before going into Windows desktop. I have been told that it may be a DNS issue on the server, but the only DNS setting I have on the local area connection on the server is 127.0.0.1. Everything seems to be working fine but this is a source of frustration if a workstation needs to be restarted.

Does anyone know a safe way, either through a batch file or a safe program where I can lock everything up until a passwords entered?
Thanks.

Hi,

I'm having some strange problems with Lock Workstation. Sometimes it works like it should, but sometimes it takes a long time to lock/unlock and the screen goes black for a bit. After I restart my computer the problem goes away, but it always comes back. This problem started within the last month or so, before then Lock Workstation always worked as it should.

I've tried to figure out what's causing the issue but haven't found anything yet. Google has only turned up this post on these forums, which wasn't very helpful to me. Can anyone here tell me what could cause this? It's driving me mad.

Thanks for any help.

This registry setting will do it: http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/264/

If using Windows XP, Microsoft says SP2 is needed or users can over-ride it with Windows-L.

I have a workstation here that always sets its time an hour behind. If I manually change the time, ten minutes later it has changed back again... I don't know where this is coming from because the server has the correct time, and before someone says this, daylight savings time is correctly set so that's not the problem. net time reveals that it is (supposedly) getting the time from the server.... ???

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

I recently updated all the Lenovo utilities on my T400, and I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise. When I go to lunch, I do a Win+L to lock my workstation.  When I get back from lunch, I can't log back in.  I just get the Windows background screen.  The mouse moves fine, but there is nothing to click on.  I can do a Ctl-Alt-Del all day and nothing happens.  Even if I pop the T400 out of the docking station and open the lid, its the same thing.  Its completely locked up except for mouse movement.  I have to remove the battery, wait a few seconds, then put it back in and do a cold boot. The only thing that has changed is the update of all the Lenovo utilities which I did earlier this week.  I've been through all the power setttings, and can not find anything that might cause this. Any ideas what's going on? Thanks

Are you using fingerprint software?  If so, can you try uninstalling it to see if that makes the problem go away?  I'm not suggesting that's a proper solution, I'm just trying to understand what the problem could be.

Hi. I just switched to Windows 7 Ultimate and I'm noticing that the command "Windows+L" to lock my screen takes 5 seconds to lock and 21 seconds to unlock, that a lot! While it's locking/unlocking the screen goes black. This action used to be immediate in XP and Vista.

Is this an OS problem or a settings problem of mine? How can I fix it?

Any help is deeply appreciated.

I would suspect a settings problem. In my ancient laptop it takes 1.5 secs to lock and 5 to unlock. You could create another user and check the time there. If it is shorter you could transfer your things to it.

Hi,

What I'm trying to do is to clone my display at workstation lock and switch to internal or external display at workstation unlock depending on the user.

I found a solution in another post : Locked computer dual monitor

The method 2 described seems to match my case but I can't manage to make it work... I created the tasks but nothing happen when I do Win+L...

Here is the description of the method :

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

METHOD 2: Scheduled Triggers
This workaround involves changing the display to duplicate screens when you lock your computer and changing it back to 2 screens when you unlock it.

To do this, we'll use task scheduler to run some command lines on a trigger. The triggers will be either unlock or locking of the computer.
%windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /extend to use two screens
%windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /clone to clone the screens
or we could also use
%windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /internal to use just one screen

So lets set this up
Create the First TaskOpen the task scheduler by typing taskschd.msc into RUN or SEARCH and pressing ENTER
Right Click on Task Scheduler (Local) and select 'Create Task'
In the Create Task Window Type a Name for first the task (e.g. Single Display Lock)
Type in a description (E.g. This task is triggered when Windows is locked and changes the display to a single display)
Tick the 'Run with Highest Privilages' Box
Change the 'Configure for' drop down box to "Win... Read more

Hello

I am in need of some serious help. I created a policy a while ago, it works like a charm. After 15  minutes of idleing, the computer locks itself (GPM -> user policy -> admin templates -> CP -> personolize -> screen savers) and i added
a few users to the exception list (delegation) because those computers need to be active all the time. But where i sc##ed up, was that i cant add computers (workstations) to the delegation list. Right now there are 3 computers that desperatly need that policy
to be turned off (and manualy adding users to the list wont do, we are talking about a 600 user long list). Can i create or make it somehow, a computer policy, that after 15 minutes of idleing, the computer locks itself, the same way the user policy works.
Right now i have to disable that policy and that is a huge security gap. Thank you for your time

When I hit Caps Lock in Windows 7 an alert (picture of a padlock in grey) icon appears indicating I have turned it on or off. While the alert is showing no input from the keyboard is accepted. This is frustrating because I usually hit Caps Lock and type immediately, and then find about 6 letters have not been accepted. The speed of the system (laptop) is otherwise OK. Is there a way to reduce the time the alert shows, or turn it off altogether?

I don't think that's a Windows 7 thing.Have you installed any keyboard software to make it do all kinds of fancy things such as function keys to quick launch certain things? If you have used an installation disc that came with the keyboard then you could always uninstall it. --

Hello,on my T42p as well as on the 60p I had a utility or different keyboard driver, that delayed the F1-Key and the Caps-Lock Key. This prevented me from undesigned uasge and was really helpful for me.Unfortunately actually I cant find that patch, but I'm pretty sure, it was provided by LENOVO / IBM. Anybody out there, who can help me to find this?Is it possible to have the same on my new X230 Thinkpad? What has to be done? ThanksMichael

Is this related to Build 1511 (10586.104)? All my drivers are up to date, etc.

Hi folks. New here.  Sorry if this has  been asked/answered, but I searched and didn't find it. My company got me this great new W500 laptop.  Came with minidock and external monitor. I have the monitor plugged into the minidock, and have it to the right of the laptop. Laptop is monitor #2, and external LCD display is #2.  works great.  UNTIL.... If I lock the console, and fold the laptop monitor closed (to have it power off - i.e. at lunch break, etc...) When I come back, the external monitor is now monitor #1 (has the windows task bar, Start menu, etc...) and it thinks the laptop monitor is monitor #2.  I can't figure out how to switch them back without rebooting.  It's very frustrating, b/c the 'sides' are swapped too.  Meaning the external LCD display which is physically to the right, is "on the left" as far as Windows is concerned, so if I drag the mouse off-screen to the right of the external display, it arrives on the left side of the laptop (which is physically to the left). Is there a simple solution to this?  I can't live with having to reboot every time I lock my monitor. I'm using Windows XP if that makes a difference.

Answer:Dual Monitor issue. Lock console & external monitor becomes monitor #1

more information... It's the 'advanced minidock' with keys. The monitor is connected via the DVI port, not the plain old VGA port.

Sup all,
This may strongly depend on the network type, but does anyone know if it is possible to detect a system time change on a workstation on a network?
There is suspicions that there is someone trying to use their system time as an excuse to go to lunch early at work,
"but my computer says its 1 O'Clock"
When everyone else's computer displays 12:48.......

I am aware that an account lock would solve the problem, but it would be more fun to catch him, i do not have admin rights and the I.T. staff seem to be less learned than i am on most topics, i merely want to suggest a solution.

Iíve tried changing this in the date and time properties but after a log off or restart it goes back to thinking itís August. I also tried syncing with windows and .gov time servers but it wouldnít sync. This only happens to one particular computer, other computers donít have this problem. I even re-imaged this computer but it didn't fix it, so I don't think it's a problem with Windows. I have no idea whatís going on. Could anyone please help?

I have a setup that is running Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V Role and 2 Guest OS (DC and Exchange). I was under the impression that if time right is on Host, the Guest will have same time and any workstations join to DC will have those times.

This setup is in two locations and tied in with VPN. The times on some machines match other do not.

I want to setup a GPO to set the workstation and server times to a trusted time source.

What is the best way to go about this? I remember having to do a Registry tweak a long time ago but I assume GPO is the better way to do this.

How to modify the VM DCís clock to correctly synchronize to the domain

Contrary to this document and references below, you still may need to disable the time integration service, via the integrations tools, if you continue to see Power Kernel Time messages ever minute in the event log AND the PCD Emulate FSMO role resides on a VM.

Log into the virtual machine, open an administrative command prompt and run the following commands:
reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\VMICTimeProvider /v Enabled /t reg_dword /d 0
This command stops W32Time from using the Hyper-V time synchronization integration service for moment-to-moment synchronization. Remember from earlier in this post that we do not go through the Windows time synchronization infrastructure to correct the time in the event of virtual machine boot / restore from saved state or snapshot. So those operations are unaffected.
w32tm /config /syncfromflagsOMHIER /update (That's : DOMHIER without the extra space)
This command tells Windows to go and look for the best time source in the domain hierarchy. If you want to use an external time server instead you can use the commands found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc784553(WS.10).aspx

Dear all,

I have a couple of annoying time delay problems with my XP machine as follows:

1. Even though I have 2MB connection my machine takes a while to load up web pages. It seems to wait for about 5-10 secs before doing anything and then loads up really quickly. Once I am within a website it navigates to other pages very quickly but if I want to go to a different web site I get the same delay.

2. When navigating using My Computer I get a huge time delay when trying to do an action such as Copy or rename i.e if I right click on a file it takes about a minute for the dialog box to come up. If however I disconnect my internet connection there is no delay at all?

I am running the same connection on my laptop which is Windows ME without any problem?

Any ideas?!!!

Hello. My computer has 4 GB of RAM, Duo Core 5500 2.7 MHZ CPU. I have a 1GB 9500 GT Nvidia, Windows Vista. I play a game called Darkfall Online, and I am having an input device delay time. When I move my mouse in the game window, there is about a half second delay on my computer from when I move my mouse to when the in-game character reacts to it. Also, when I type, or do any kind of input in the game; there is the same half second delay time. The issue is not ping. When I run the game, it only consumes up to 30% of my CPU and 2 GB of RAM.

This issue does not occur outside of Darkfall, but does in some other games. When I crank the settings of the graphics up to the maximum, there is a half-second delay. When I turn the setting to minimum, there is the same half-second delay.

I cannot begin to describe how annoying this is. My computer is brand new, and the drivers are up to date according to the Vista Device Manager scans. Also, I have even updated the Graphics card driver from the manufacturers website. . I have an older computer with worse equipment on Vista, I have had it for years; and the delay does not occur on it.

I have tried changing mouses, and everything I can think of and the issue on the computer described originally is still not running properly in game!

Now, I am willing to provide any necessary information that I have not included here. I really want this resolved, but it really is a hard problem to find a fix to.

Thank you in advance for help, I really ... Read more

I like using autohide for the Taskbar, but it can sometimes be annoying when using a full-screen program in that when you approach the bottom of the screen the Taskbar pops up over the program you're using. What I'd like is a registry entry where I can either add a delay time so that the Taskbar only appears after hovering the mouse over it for 5 seconds or so, or to make it so that the Taskbar doesn't appear at all unless I use the "WIN + t" key combination. I can find all sorts of tweaks and 3rd party programs that add all sorts of functionality to the Taskbar, but none that do this.

I need to use Z1 Workatation as an external monitor with another PC (MacBook running on MacOs). I connect HP to Macbook using the display port. Dislay port is ok, I've tested it on other devices. When HP and Mac are connected nothing happens. Neither HP nor Mac don't "see" external dislay. The combination ctrl+shift+s+d also doesn't work (as suggested in user guide, page 25). Installing My Display software didn't help too. Please suggest what else can I do to use HP workstation as a monitor.Thank you in advance.

Every time I install Windows 7 X64 (or X86) from USB I get two unexplainable delays for no apparent reason and I wondered if this was normal or just my system?

OK, I boot up and the files are copied from the USB to the PC. Fine. Then there's at least a 5 minute delay before the language choice screen appears! Is that a normal delay time?

After choosing that, you get the 'Setup is starting' screen for yet another 5 minutes before the EULA licence appears and you choose what/where or whether you want to repair the PC screens. Again, is that the normal delay?

10 minutes of sitting around waiting for the screen to appear where you can repair/re-install the computer just seems ridiculous.

Thereafter, it only takes 15-20 minutes to do a completely fresh install, so that's fine too.

Anyone else experiencing these delays?

Answer:Windows 7 X64 USB installation - Is this a 'normal' delay time?

That doesn't normal to me but im not sure what would cause a delay like that, given that you rarely need to access that I guessing its not going to be a major problem though ?????

After converting from Windows 7 to 10 the screensaver delay time resets to 1 every time I boot the system.
This prevents the screensaver from activating. I set the time and press apply and then works all day until
I sign off at night and re-boot (power up) in the morning. I did not have this problem with Windows 7.

Hello Everyone,Is there any way to change the delay time on the Windows XP Splash on Start Up? Currently it stays on for about 40 seconds. I want to shorten the amount of time the XP Splash is displayed. I tried disabling it through msconfig but noticed instead of the Windows XP Splash i started getting a black screen on start up which took up the same amount of time as the XP Splash. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Access Delay Time on XP Splash On Start Up?

The "splash screen itself" is not the issue, what you have is slow booting. Most likely you have too much starting up. You can disable things using msconfig but it is better to disable anything you don't require from within programs themselves, if possible. There maybe some unused programs you can uninstall (Control Panel > Add-Remove Programs).Make sure you do not have more than one Anti Virus or Anti Malware program running in the background at the same time.Consider disabling search indexing and maybe some unnecessary services.Clear temporary internet files and run defrag.Keep watching for further suggestions from others..We all live on a ball.

Windows XP has a delay time of a few seconds when deleting an in-use file. (Example: when an mp3 file is open and you delete that file, Windows XP will say that it is deleting the file for about 3 seconds, then says that it cannot delete the file, since the file is open).

I want to set the settings in Windows 8 to do exactly the same thing. Windows 8's default setting is to immediately state that the mp3 file is in use and cannot delete it. I want Windows 8 to wait for 3 seconds until it states that it cannot delete it.

Reason why I need this option is that I delete the file first, then I change the mp3 file so it is no longer in use.
That's the only order of doing this thing that I do.

Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you so much.

For windows 7 professional what can be checked besides sfc /scannow to work up software problems with the right lower hand corner clock time?

This notebook computer is new and was placed into use on 9/20/2015.  It has had problems with keeping time.  With windows 7 professional when the computer is in use or idle but not yet hybernating or in sleep the right lower hand corner clock would
display inaccurate time.  The time was checked by using the web site www.time.is which displays the amount of time behind or ahead.  The notebook after an updated time with time.windows or nist.gov or nw.nist.gov o a-nist.gov or b-nist.gov would
display exact time.  Then as the notebook was used the time would increase in the delay to a little over one minute and then somehow reset to approximately 0.6 seconds delay and then progressively delay again and again.
HP offered to replace the CMOS RTC battery and the motherboard.  I had them just replace the CMOS RTC battery.  The notebook had no change after the replaced battery.  The date has never been incorrect.  The time has always progressively
delayed and then reset to a smaller delay with windows 7 professional.
When the replacement battery did not alter the behavior of the clock time delay HP had me check another operating system.  They had me use a utility on an external flash drive that formated it and installed the utility.  Then they had me download
and install U... Read more

when My phone rings I am missing calls because I don't here them properly I have
changed ringtones and adjusted volume still not satisfied with the out come

Answer:[L830] Is it possible to adjust the time delay between rings?

There's seems to be no way to do that (change time delay between rings) directly from the phone settings. However, the user may always create a custom ringtone with a custom duration of silence and then just copy that tone from PC to the phone.
Putting a delay between when the phone rings and when the phone actually receives a call may increase the risk of missing calls.
Try using a custom ringtone with a louder output volume instead. Phone speakers seems to be most responsive/efficient for tones within the 4,000 - 6,000 Hz range, so it would be beneficial to use a ringtone that has sounds within that frequency range.

I can't figure out why I have such a delay in my computer being able to connect. Once I start up, the white bars will show instantly, sometimes with the yellow mark in them, sometimes not. Even if the white bars show up instantly I still cannot connect. It takes like 30 to 60 seconds until I can. I will try the Diagnose feature and it will say no problems, however I still can't connect.
If I look at the " Show me all my device's on my network" it will show a picture of my computer~Router~Web. There is a red line between the Router and the Web showing it is not connected. Which to me means that my router and computer are connected, but something else is not. Something is holding up my connection time and I can't figure it out

Any advice!!!!

Looks like you need a DVI cable. ( OR DVI to VGA Adapter ) You probably have the smaller VGA cable to this monitor. With a DVI and VGA converter you could use the already existing VGA cable. This adapter plugs into the DVI port on the video card.

Delay Chkdsk start up time at OS Boot | Windows 8 & 8.1
(Or Disable Altogether)

Previous to Windows 8 if Chkdsk needed to run without prompt the user had the ability to cancel if so desired.
Since Windows 8, the user input has been removed.

At the least, you can change the delay setting as follows:
Modify DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"

IMAGE ONE:
1. Open Regedit:
One way to open regedit is to hit the Winkey+S and type regedit, hit enter when you see it appear.

2. Navigate to the following registry key:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

3. Click on the folder "Session Manager"

4. In the right hand pane you will see registry values. Right click on the value "AutoChkTimeout" and select "Modify" (See image one)
If the value is missing, create it (See image two)

5. Change the "Value data:" to the desired delay time of your choice.
e.x. Changing the value to 10, will delay the Chkdsk start time by 10 seconds.
Click OK, close the registry.
Finished.
Create DWORD "AutoChkTimeout"

IMAGE TWO:

If the registry value "AutoChkTimeout" is not present:
Right click on an empty space in the right hand pain (in folder "Session Manager")

Select "New"
Select "DWORD (32-Bit) Value
Name it "AutoChkTimeout" (No Quotation Marks "")
Follow step 4. above.

Remember:
Name = AutoChkTimeout
Base = Hexadecimal

ok with Windows 7 I can no longer set the delay time for my "x-mouse" / window hover.
I know how to get the windows to hover (via the: Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Make the mouse easier to use\Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse), but I want to add a delay (currently it is almost instant in Win 7).
Anyone know how I can set my own delay? thanks

Answer:enable x-mouse functionality - delay time - windows 7

Standard disclaimer: Don't do this if you are not comfortable editing the registry. Back up the registry before doing this. This works fine here but your mileage may vary.
Using regedit open the regisrty and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\
Look for: ActiveWndTrkTimeout
If its there right click and choose modify, change the base to decimal and use a value of about 1500 (1.5 seconds). The value is milliseconds so you can change it to whatever you like but I had some issues with the taskbar acting strange at higher values.
If ActiveWndTrkTimeout is not there right click in an empty area and choose new dword value. Make sure that you name it exactly: ActiveWndTrkTimeout (yes its case sensitive). Then change it as noted above.
You will probably need to log off then back on for the change to take effect.
Best of luck.

Answer:Slow boot time (~90 seconds) - Plug and Play delay

My computer give me >120 second in order for me to start using.

Startup usually may check and confirm many type of setting, etc.

For example, if you desktop is empty, it will take 10 second and you can start using.

All items on the desktop are to be verified as true, otherwise it may try to find the link.

When you insert any USB device into the USB port, the system usually take every 5 second to check if there is any change.
Hence, within 5 second, the USB device will be detected.
Then it have to check if that device did connected to USB port-2 before, it can be used immediately.
If it check as the device is never connected to the USB port-2, it then have to find the USB driver to install and saved, remembered.

Then again, for 90 seconds, it may not matter much, as just turn on the computer before, say, to take a bath first.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

I use Windows Explorer heavily. I am constantly moving files and batches of files from one folder to another. I have one very annoying problem with this but I bet there is a way to fix it.

Here's what I do - I highlight several files in the right pane, I hold down the right-mouse-button over the selected files, I drag them over to a folder in the left pane, and then the annoyance happens. If I don't drop those files immediately into that folder, the entire list of sub-folders pops open as if I hit the little plus to the left of the folder. What makes this a major annoyance is that the folder I wanted to move into has now changed its position in the left pane because the sub-folders popped open.

Now, sometimes I desperately need the sub-folder list to open because I forgot to find the folder I needed before moving the files. It is a nice feature. However, if only I could increase the delay-time. I'd like to give myself triple the time to drop the files into the folder before the sub-folder list opens. There has to be a registry tweak for this. Anyone have any ideas?

ps - I don't think the MenuShowDelay value found under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop has any effect on this because I have tried it.Thanks for your time and courtesy!

Answer:Windows Explorer - increase delay time when dragging&dropping

Hello Oxgt2e,

You might see if using the below to add "Copy to Folder" and "Move to Folder" to the context menu may make doing this easier for you. This way you will not have to worry about the delay time.

Kind of screen glitch that appears before windows 8 lock screen appears at start /restart and a notable delay in starting/restarting time than with my 1st win8 install.

I think this appeared after I installed my windows 7 back ( dont ask me why..)( a clean install) and installed my win8 back again.I dont think Ive done them corectly:

I couldnt install win 7 it in C ,neither to format that partition because of this message [Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks] and an error code 0x0000 smth... while attempting to format the C. I could only manage to instal windows 7 back after deleting all of the partiton and now I have a single C one.

When Ive tried to reinstall windows 8 these days I expected to see only a partiton where to put my windows but instead there were other minor ones too ( they dint shown during my win7 install) like they appear now if I open disk management .

So now I have that glitch when starting windows 8. I dont know how to describe it: its a black screen -with that windows 8 doted loading wheel -partially covering my Motherboard logo screen ( that screen at startup with bios setup, boot menu options etc).I say partially becuase I can see parts of my motherboard screen on left and right but they are kinda shredded and disolved into scraps. Hi there

For those running Linux VM's especially with VMware where you have several kernels installed - the default is often TOO quick to be able to select the kernel you want to use

Note this is AFTER the VM starts booting - it's the VM boot screen not the "Virtual Bios" where you can select the boot device.

Easy trick

edit the defaults file in etc/default/grub

GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="$(sed 's, release .*$,,g' /etc/system-release)"
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=true
GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="console"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.lvm.lv=centos/root rd.lvm.lv=centos/swap rhgb quiet"
GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true

set the TIMEOUT to the value you want - 10 is usually plenty long enough

If you want your specific kernel to be top of the list then starting with 0 look at the entries in the boot and set GRUB_DEFAULT = n (starting with 0) so if your kernel is 2nd in the list set GRUB_DEFAULT=1).

then re-generate grub and reboot

grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

Cheers
jimbo

Now it takes near a full minute, and First the gateway logo sticks in the middle for 20 seconds, then the DVI connection for 20 before it goes away. Nothing else seems wrong, images are crisp, no ghosting so Im confused as to how I correct this.

This is all brand new kit.  The P70 works perfectly and so does the external monitor when I plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the P70.  However, if I connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the Dock and then dock the P70, the external monitor blinks (black screen) every 5 to 30 seconds or so.  The blink is about 0.5  to 1 second in duration.  I have found posts from 2013 regarding a similar problem on the Thinkpad Ultra Dock which was resolved with a firmware update. Is there a resolution to this issue or a firmware update available?  If not I will have to return the dock as there is no point in having it if I cannot use a multiple monitor configuration when docked. Any help gratefully received. Andy

When I connect my Thinkpad P50 to my external monitor (Samsung C34F741) directly using the mini Diplayport (connector on the side of the laptop) everything works fine. The resolution 3440x1440 @ 100 Hz and sound on the monitor speakers all work flawlessly. However, when I connect the same external monitor to the Displayport of the Lenovo Workstation Dock (using the same cable), the video works fine (same resolution and refresh rate as above), but the audio on the monitor speakers lags behind the video. The lag is at first barely noticable but increases as time passes, eventually getting out of sync a few seconds. I have the latest nVidia drivers and the latest Workstation Dock firmware installed. I am suspecting the external Displayport on the docking station is not capable of driving the high resolution at such a high refresh rate. Is there indeed a difference is specs between the laptop's Diplayport and the Docking station's Displayport? Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

I've been using OneDrive music streaming with Grove again recently, which gives you playback controls in the universal volume control that comes up on screen when you perform any playback operation (change volume/pause/etc). I've looked around though, but I haven't been able to find a way to change the amount of time the control stays on screen after a change, or to reposition it, since it's pretty big when you have playback going. I'd like to have it either disappear faster, or at least show up on the secondary display instead of the primary. Yes, I know I could just switch the primary/secondary monitors, but I'd like more granular control here. Anyone found a setting to change this (either surfaced or something in the registry that you can change)?

have 40 to 50 systems running 2K prof. I'd like to lock them out from being able to surf the net. I figure it can be done several different ways. I'm new with this company, and am just now learning their enviroment.

There are 3 different locations. Each site, has it's own 2K small biz server running.

They have no group policies in effect as well.

Where would you begin, or what would be the easiest solution, all the while providing some scaleability?

Thanks for the help

So I rebooted the win7 workstation went to login to it normally with the users credentials and it acts like its a new user login everything is default all pst's, docs, favs, everything is gone . If you browse the windows explorer you can see there are other similar profiles that it looks like used to be . What would happen if I tried to rename a user in Active directory?

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Thanks

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

h:mm
12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

hh:mm
12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

H:mm
24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

HH:mm
24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

Hi,

I looking for a way to limit time on the PC - auto lock Windows after 30 minutes, even (and especially) when the computer is not idle.
When the user will log back into Windows by entering the Windows password, the counter will start again from 30 minutes.

The app should start automatically and silent with Windows, and the user should not be able to stop this app without a password.

Thanks, Nir.

Answer:Force lock windows after set time

Use parental controls. Only works on user accts, not admins.

Windows 8 keeps locking the screen, seems maybe 1 minute after not touching it. I would like to set that to something like 20 minutes, but I can't see where to do that?

Answer:How do I set the time limit for screen lock

Try looking in Control Panel under Power Option settings.
You can adjust for Battery and Power options / to your needs.

I have a similar problem with Outlook 365, but it only happens when I try to respond or create an email. Most times I just have to close outlook and restart it and do not do anything except to create that email otherwise it will freeze up again, and become non-responsive.Any suggestions?I have done the uninstall and reinstall a couple of times, actually had Office 365 tech do it remotely, it works for a day or 2 and then starts acting up again.message edited by gbkane40

"I have a similar problem with Outlook 365"Similar problem to what or who? Best bet is to spell out your own problem exactly because it is yours that wants fixing, not something similar.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I know this is probably an amatuer question but I am running XP professional and want to find out how to set it so that it will lock the pc after a set amount of time when the user has been away. I don't want it to log out, just lock the pc, like when you go to the switch user screen, only automatically... thanks in advance

Answer:how to set XP to lock computer after set amount of time

That is a setting in the screen saver properties. You can set time and require a password.

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]
"SlideshowDuration"=dword:000493e0
(where the screen turns off after 5 minutes).

I have the formula to figure out what you need to calculate to insert after "dword" for the amount of time until the screen times out (goes black). Ask me for the formula... as long as the above works.

Thanks

Answer:Lock Screen Slideshow Time Out

Never mind. I went into the Registry and checked it out.

Yes, the same exact rules apply here like in Windows 8.1

Anyone else seeing this issue? If I put my tablet into standby when I wake it I don't get the lock screen and it just goes straight to the start screen or whatever app I was using. If I put it into standby again then I'll get the lock screen the next time I wake it but then the next time it won't appear again. I've checked and it's literally every other time.

Answer:Lock screen only appears every other time

No-one else? I tried doing a refresh and setting up a PIN and it's still doing the same thing here. Not good for device security.
