Help me decide on budget Windows 8 tablet

Question: Help me decide on budget Windows 8 tablet

I am looking for the cheapest Windows 8 tablet available. I am getting one to replace my ipad and one for my uncle. The best I can find is a refurbished Dell XPS 10 with winRT for $200ish. I can also get a new Vivotab Smart with atom proc for $400. Ideally I want an atom proc, but the price difference may be a bit much. Are there cheaper atom tablets for less than $400? I don't want to spend that much since its mostly for leisure use.

I am also curious about web browsing performance. The atom will be faster than the ARM one, but by how much? And will the ARM one be faster than my old ipad? The other thing is there is supposedly flash support for both. How good is the performance?

Lastly. Is there any news of Windows 8 getting Words with Friends? It's available on Windows Phone 8, but not regular Windows 8. I am a WWF addict. I also play a lot of Scramble with friends. Other than web surfing, these are the only two must have apps. I have a bunch of friends both real and fictional that play them so substitutes wouldn't work.

Preferred Solution: Help me decide on budget Windows 8 tablet

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Help me decide on budget Windows 8 tablet

The ARM will have much better battery life than the Atom, but the Atom will be somewhat faster and can run x86 applications (doesn't use RT).

For only $400 i'd go with the Atom, but it has half the battery life of the ARM version.

Continued from: This troubleshooting thread
I recently posted a thread asking which video card brands were better than others (support, warrenties, etc...)
Now I need some advice I buying a video card, because my computer's previous Radeon X300 died.
I have a 305 watt, generic Dell PSU.
+5V = 22A
+12VA = 18A
+12VB = 18A
-12V = 1A ?
+3.3V = 17A
+5VSB = 2A ?
combined max 12VA and 12VB = 22A...
Check my sig for the rest of my computer hardware.

I should probably get a new power supply, but my budget can't really support the extra ~$60 for a good Antec, Corsair, or Thermaltake, because I am saving up for a new computer.
My computer has a x16 slot, so I am not looking to upgrade, just a repacement of some type, same power requirements.
After checking around I think my PSU could support a 7200 GS, 8400 GS, Radeon 3450, Radeon 4350, or Radeon 5450.

$30 - GIGABYTE HD 4350 512MB 64-bit
$33 - MSI 8400 GS 512MB 64-bit
$41 - SAPPHIRE HD 5450 512MB 64-bit
$42 - XFX HD 4350 512MB 64-bit
$47 - ASUS HD 5450 512MB 64-bit

These are the cards I have my eye on, any thoughts, opinions?
Please don't laugh at me and tell my to upgrade my computer, I just want to be able to use the computer again with out spending $150+

Answer:Trying to decide between a few budget GPUs to replace my dead Radeon X300

An Radeon HD 5450 is the best for the money you want to spend. The ASUS HD 5450 is out of stock so get the SAPPHIRE HD 5450

I am looking for a Windows tablet within £200 to £400.
I need it for basic Microsoft Office programs and I need to be able to run the python IDE "Idle". What are your recommendations and if you recommend a tablet, can you also recommend a keyboard and case if available. Thanks for any help provided!

So I was thinking Surface 2, was thinking RT is fine for me anyway as I have a laptop as well, I mean since I was thinking of getting an iPad if not an MS tablet anyway it kinda proves Im not fussed about full fat windows no it BUT now I am seeing that there are a lot of high spec tablets, as good as the surface 2 but also contain windows pro.
So basically my wants:
* Nice looking, Im not very into those ones with really rounded corners!
* High res screen, so xxxx X 1080 please!
* great tablet form factor, the whole hybrid/laptop part really is secondary and just a bonus.
* Decent battery life
* Plays HD movies etc well (hence the screen above)
* Under $800
Things I dont really care about
* Honestly dont think ill ever run native windows apps, but who knows!
* Works also like a laptop, as above, this is just a bonus really as I primarily want a tablet after all.
Concerns.... does anyone think that the W8 store will be any good, to be honest I think id prefer a 10" Windows Phone 8 sometimes!
thanks in advance.
p.s I might see what Nokia bring out so will make decision just before end of this month as Ill also be able to claim about ?150 back on anything I spend.

Answer:Cant decide which tablet - Any help? :)

Given your requirements and my experience with a variety of tablets, I'd recommend an iPad.
Here's why. I have found that my Surface RT feels more comfortable as a netbook rather than as a tablet. The 16:9 aspect ratio of the Surface RT just feels awkward to me. Too narrow in portrait mode, too wide in landscape. The onscreen keyboard takes up a significant percentage of the screen space. Whenever I attempt to use the RT as a tablet, I end up attaching the touchcover.
The retina display on the iPad 4 is fantastic for viewing PDFs, magazines/comics in cbz/cbr format. There is such a wide variety of media consumption apps for music, video, images, documents it is almost guaranteed that you'll find the perfect fit for your needs.
I regularly get over 10 hours of usage on my iPad 4. Battery life on my Surface RT is not that long... but still very good IMO. I haven't run it down completely but I've gotten 7-8 hours without worrying about the battery.
If a netbook/notebook/laptop experience was important, then I'd heartily recommend the RT instead.
Just my thoughts... I'm sure others will chime in with the exact opposite viewpoint and their opinions would be equally as valid.

Okay, I've looked at Surface RT, Surface Pro, Thinkpad Tablet 2 and a couple of others but still can't make up my mind so I'm reaching out to the forum world for some feedback. I need Office as I use it everyday, ability to use a stylus pen to take notes and make comments on documents, expandable storage (microSD), and decent battery life (I want to be able to make it through the day without having to connect to a charger). These are my main concerns. Of course build quality and screen resolution are important as well but most that I have looked at so far appear to be well built and I didn't see any real issues with screen resolution.
I just can't seem to make up my mind and all the reviews are starting to run together. I want some honest feedback about different tablets from users here on the forum. One thing I don't want is one of those laptops or ultrabooks that the monitor flips around to become a tablet. I'm pretty comfortable with using the touch keyboard that is built in and I find the convertable units to be just a bit too bulky.

Answer:Can't decide on what Tablet to buy......Need Suggestions

My experience is pretty much only with my Surface RT so I can't offer too many comparisons to other tablet models.
However, my experience with my RT has literally been the most positive experiences I've ever had with an electronic - this is including my Windows 8 Phone (which I also love). It's light, works incredibly well with the touch cover, and the battery life is honestly mind-boggling. I literally use it all day to play games, stream video, etc. and the battery lasts over a day. Office works very well on it as well.
The only thing I'll say is that you'll most likely want to get the touch cover or type cover, especially if you'll be using office often. It also has expandable micro SD expandable memory up to 64gb (I believe).

Question: Budget Tablet?

does anyone have knowledge of/experience with the Insignia Tablets? I saw an 11.6" screen model, 32GB, Android 7.0 with a detachable keyboard for $130, which seems fairly reasonable. I only need a tablet for the most basic things: email, surfing the net, etc.

Are there any other tablets in a similar price range? Thank you.

Hi all
My mind is boggling with all the tablets that are available.
I would like your opinions on which is the best on a low budget.
I have been leaning towards a Gemini joytab.
I need a 10" screen and I will be using it for the Internet and basic things such as email etc.
Thanks in anticipation

I am a tech enthusiast who does not have the money to fund his habit. As such I am not able to update my tech as often as I desire. Also when I do it requires much saving and a painstaking amount of research on what I will ultimately spend my hard saved money on. Now obviously research should always be done especially on such pricey purchases so as to avoided the dreaded buyers remorse that undoubtedly occurs because Technology updates so frequently. So while I mull over slash save toward my next computer purchase which I am hoping will be a fanless Surface device I find myself surrounded by ancient technology by which to check email, browse the web, and use social media at home. While my Lumia Icon is great at this I really want a tablet with a 7 inch and up screen to use at home both for the added screen real estate and so my Lumia is not discharged when I need to venture out of my home. So my question is what is a good budget windows tablet that I could purchase for under $100 while I save toward my ultimate goal? I have heard that the HP Stream 7 and WinBook TW700 might fit this bill and was wondering if anyone could offer their experiences with these devices. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Good Budget tablet.

I use a Linx 8, bought off Amazon UK, haven't had any problems within the past month of having it so far.

I want budget tablet (at max 20000 INR) for reading and some basic editing. My requirements:
1. Good battery life
2. 4 GB RAM
3. Better multiasking (split screen view)
4. Good processor
5. At least 64GB storage
I was searching for Mi Pad 3. It runs Android. And fortunately Microsoft have good office apps on android. But is not yet launched in India.
So I googled for alternatives and for more info.
I realized that Mi Pad 3's MIUI 9 does not yet have split screen view. So it was deal breaker. Also I realized that I wont be having any Android updates. So I was quick to look for Windows tablet.
But then there is simply no budget Windows tablet in India. I wish to have tablet which will Windows update for at least five years. Or may be I will install Latest Windows from USB, so that I can always have latest build on tablet.
I come across fact that Mi Pad 2 ran Windows:
And this awesome multitasking in iOS 11 with iPad:
So I realized if I can have full Windows on tablet, it will be a lot beautiful than both.
I read recently that Windows on snapdragon will have huge battery life. How long we should wait to get such budget Windows tablet? Or is there any such available already?

Hi all, I have recently upgraded to windows 7 (64bit) and now when I  put my tablet into tablet mode, the screen doesn't autorotate and none of the tablet buttons work. In order to rotate the screen I have to right click on the desktop and choose graphic properties/rotation.Interestingly if I press the tablet buttons while in tablet mode and then rotate the screen up to notepad mode within a few seconds the button will perform its function (rotate screen, activate tablet shortcut menu, etc). Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I've tried running system update (4.0) to no avail. Cheers

I think iBall Slide i701 is the cheapest tablet in world (windows) even cheaper than Lumia 430.
Only USD 77$
But i have some questions before i proceed to buy it for my child
1. As it is 16gb tablet but in actual we get only 4gb free space & i have read in reviews that once we update windows & other apps we are left with only 400mb space & we cant install other apps. So is it possible to install software's (.exe) on 64GB memory card which this tablet support ?
I am not talking about APPS, I am talking about .exe files like photoshop, ERP, educational softwares etc.
2. As it is having only 1 USB port so it is possible to attach a USB hub so that we can attach pen drives, KB, Mouse, HDD, 3g Dongel & power adapter at once ?
If anyone of you have used any windows 8/8.1 tablet then please reply.

I have a Cherry Mobile Alpha Morph that works without problems aside from the fact that, when I undock it from the keyboard, it doesn't detect that it should now be in Tablet Mode. I have to manually go to the Action Center and toggle it there. Same with docking it back. I have already checked my settings and I didn't disable Tablet Mode either.

Anyone have an idea how I can resolve this? I just want to seamlessly dock and undock the tablet and it should switch to tablet or desktop mode respectively.

I don't know if it's relevant but the OS is Windows 10 Home Single Language.

Answer:Tablet mode doesn't get engaged when I undock my Windows tablet?

I would like to know how to enable this as well - In fact, I was hoping to be prompted to change modes when dock/undocking....instead of having to find the setting and toggle tablet mode on/off every time.

Honestly guys I haven't done any research or thinking about it till recently I realized the deadline was coming soon. The couple of negatives I believe I've heard mentioned is you no longer have a lot of administrator privileges to modify and tweak things and that I probably will find that my nice barely used HP Printer won't have a driver available. Basically tell me what to base the decision on. Curious as to what percentage of the "sevenforums" users are not upgrading and why.

Also let it be known that I would hate to think Microsoft is bullying me into it.................but at the same time if its does actually have more pros than cons then what the hell its free.

I mainly use my computer to self educate myself about DIY projects and tutorials on topics that interest me. And as far as programs I use are Cad drawings, Engineering programs. Design layout. And my hobby of high powered rocketry requires the use of various simulator programs. etc.

And I do not use it for social media at all.

If this debate has already been had just tell me the results and my decision will be easy. Thanks for your time guys and gals.

I have upgraded my X201 Tablet to Windows 10 32bit. As far as I can tell, everything is working, including the WACOM drivers and touchscreen.  Wireless has worked perfectly so far, not sure about Bluetooth as I don't use it. My only issue is that the buttons on the display do not work. The power button located on the display does work. I tried installing the Tablet Button Driver II and it will go through the install but the buttons do not work.  This is the download link: The document claims Windows 10 compatability and was Last Updated :08 Jun 2015. On inspection, all the files extracted are dated from 2012 and when trying to manually run the software Windows throws up an error that the software is not supported on this PC.   I removed and reinstalled and noted that the driver information page when running the installer does NOT have Windows 10 listed as a supported system. My assumption is that the driver that they have linked on the download page is NOT the most current driver and is infact the driver for Windows 7 from 2012. Does anyone know how to contact Lenovo to get the correct driver posted to the page, or know of an alternate source to try and find it?

I'm going to be doing some presentations and teaching online. I'm using Team Viewer 9 running on Windows 7 as my software. I would like to be able to have the equivalent to a whiteboard visible to the participants.
For a demonstration of the sort of thing I want to do see
where the presenter draws circles etc. He doesn't do any handwriting in the YouTube video (but he does in the actual presentation at CBT nuggets)
I'm total newbie when it comes to tablets, but a tablet that allows drawing direct on the tablet and simultaneous display on a Windows monitor. I know that the presentation on You Tube was done with various Wacom devices. Intuos4, Cintiq monitor, or more recently, Cintiq Companion tablet. (I tweeted the presenter Shawn Powers). These devices are a bit beyond my budget. Is there a cheaper alternative? Sadly the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is not yest available in Australia (where I am) - I'm not sure if it's a possible answer, but I'm assuming it would be. Is there anything else that's not going to mean I have to take out a mortgage on my house?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Drawing on a tablet with simultaneous display on the tablet and a Windows PC

I assume you mean you want to use an app on a standard tablet such as a Nexus 7 or IPad and stream the tablet screen content to a monitor or TV?
Maybe something like this is needed

I have upgraded to Windows 8 64 bit on my X61 Tablet, however I cannot get the tablet buttons, hotkeys, or auto-rotation to work. My understanding is that Lenovo has stopped supporting these products. I think it is a shame to stop using a perfectly working tablet PC with a superior LCD. I don't want to go back to Win 7 leaving all kinds of nice features on Windows 8. Any suggestions? Is there a hope? Koray

Answer:X61 Tablet Windows 8 - Tablet Button and Features Request

Hi koray,
I've been playing around with Windows 8 since the developers preview.  I've ran it on a lot of older systems.  Getting things to work will require some experimentation on your part.
You can start with your Driver Matrix.  There you can find the Hotkeys Utility for Windows 8.  You will also need the Power Manager Driver for Windows 8.  Not Power Manager,  just the Power Manager Driver.
Run Windows Update, it will probably find some stuff.  Some Windows 7 drivers will work, others won't.
I'm running Windows 8 Pro on an x60 tablet and everything works fine.  I also have it on an x61 non-tablet and it runs fine. I had to do a lot of messing around with stuff to get them to work right though.
Just make sure that you set system restore points before changing anything so you can get back what you had before, just in case something doesn't work right.  And, only install one thing at a time and reboot and test it out thoroughly before you install something else.
Good luck with this,

I hope many of you have noticed still how inconsistent the UI is within Windows 10. Menu buttons are different in nearly every screen. Settings and Control Panel are using completely different UI, and 'all apps' in the start menu is still not very helpful and most of us will either just use file explorer and/or search.

I guess I just was hoping windows 10 to have a more consistent UI, but I suppose catering for both tablet AND PC using one single OS is a very tough challenge.

So this is what's happening. If I play a game like Skyrim or GTA4, often during the loading process my computer will freeze for 2-4 seconds. 75% of the time it will continue, and I can keep playing. 25% of the time, it perma-freezes, and I have to reboot. Sometimes with Skyrim, I could use Ctrl-Alt-Del and close it. However, when I reopen it, it won't load past the intro screen.

Now here's the conditions. I've had my mobo for quite awhile, and at first I thought it might've been that, but now I'm pretty sure it's not. I switched a new Video Card and Power Supply into the computer at the same time. I also had some problems rebooting into Windows shortly after that, so now I have 2 copies of windows.

Then I considered it was the Power Supply, as my step-dad told me it was faulty before. Although I consider that could be it, it seems more like it's a software issue. Because if I'm on YouTube or something, and I cycle through videos too quickly while it's playing, my computer will completely stop everything. After I click a few times, it beeps and then freezes, and I can't move the mouse anymore.

What's your call?

Answer:Power Supply or Windows Software? You decide.

What is your systems specs? That will give us a better idea. But, yes, the PSU is normally the culprit, not always.

Answer:Solved: Windows ME--Need help to see if these are trojans, worms, or virus, I can't decide

Please post the full HJT log here.

Make sure you are running the latest HJT v1.99.1 and that it is not running from a Temp folder within a zip.

Make sure you've got the latest detections for both SpybotSD and AdawareSE
and then run all of AVG, Spybot and Adaware in Safe Mode
then boot into Normal Mode and run them again.

Adaware SE -
Install Adaware, but don't run the scan just yet.
You should get the detection updates during installation,
but if not, open Adaware, click "check for updates now" and then "connect".
Then close Adaware.

Then, when in Safe Mode...
In the main Adaware window, click "Start"
Checkmark "Do a full system scan"
Uncheck "search for negligible risk entries"
Click "Next" to start the scan.
Checkmark all results, and click "Next" to fix.

Then, after doing all the above, do online scans at preferably 2 of the following sites:
Then reboot and post the new HJT log here.

I have really been looking forward to this upgrade but yet again it seems that i'm once again is gonna be left out of the windows 10 community on all of my 4 devices.

If you can run windows 7 most likely windows 10 will work.

I have an IBM ThinkPad X41 that was issued to me from work. I would like to reinstall the operating system to get rid of all the garbage that's on it. But, they don't have the CD's that came with the laptop. The COA on the bottom of the X41 is for WinXP Pro Tablet Edition. But, I don't have a copy in the office and they can't find it anywhere. Should I install Windows XP Professional on it or should I somehow contact IBM for the CD's to be reissued?

Any ideas???

Let me just start by saying that I am a self-proclaimed Windows/Microsoft fanboy. I've always used Windows for the PC. I practically live on my Xbox. And I constantly switch my SIM between my Lumia 1520 and 1020. I'm going to be coming into a little bit of money here in a few weeks and would really like to use part of it to expand my Microsoft tech ownership. I know that I'm getting the Band 2. If I keep my 1520 (hoping that most of W10M great features will work on it) and don't spring for the 950, then I will have about $800 left to spend on a Windows tablet/laptop of some kind. My only stipulation is that I want something that can be used as a tablet but comes pretty close of PC capabilities. Let's say I just waltz into Best Buy to pick up my Band 2...what's the best Windows machine to be had at that price point?

Answer:I need a Windows machine...and here is my budget...

You should really ask this question in the right forum section (Windows 10), the "ask a question" section here isn't just for everything that ends in a question mark (it's here for people who want help quickly).
For that price, I'd get a reconditioned Surface Pro, of the best spec that you can reasonably afford.

I decided to put in $1900 for my college laptop. What are some good websites / vendors to buy a very good laptop of this price? Is putting in 1900 a high-end or a mid laptop?

Laptop will be used for multimedia and gaming and of course school work.

Answer:Windows Laptop under $1900 budget

It will be higher end. I would say budget would be 600-1000, mid range would be 1000-1600 and anything above that will be top of line.

I have always loved HP laptops, still have mine from 4 years ago - and as my time as a computer tech i've had far fewer service calls on HP compared to Sony and Dell (the most).

I've also read (not experienced) that Acer has some really nice laptops.

Now I have long waited (may be a couple of years) for a good budget Windows tablet to get introduced in the market, and now I have reached the position that I am badly needed a tablet. Knowing that we will possibly see some Snapdragon based Windows tablets in coming weeks, I want to know if any of current / existing tablets be a daily driver? My definition of daily driver includes following mainly a satisfiable battery life (and in fact thats what all I want to ask, you may change the post title to "Are Windows tablets battery life as good as Android tablets") New Android tablets gives battery life of at least more than one day. Is that the case with current Windows tablet? My use case will be mostly reading, browsing and creating/editing some docs. But we get basic Microsoft office suite, Chrome browser and PDF readers even on Android. So at least a day long battery life is worth. Most Windows tablets specs say x hours of battery (not days of battery). Also I feel they dont consider always on mode like those of Android tablets in which we dont really sht down the tablet. Is it so?
In short
daily driver = good performance + good battery life + presence of required apps
good performance = no lag on multi tasking say two apps open side by side at max or multiple chrome tabs (mostly satisfying processor and 4GB ram)
presence of required apps = (for me main usage is reading which requires) MS Office + Chrome ... Read more

In Windows, how do programs "choose"/"decide" which network adapter/connection to use?

I have dual ethernet adapters on my machine. I usually only have one enabled (LAN1). But now that I've enabled the second one (LAN2) concurrently, my network traffic is now defaulting through LAN2.

I've previously gone into Advanced Network Settings (Windows 7) and arranged the order of adapters so that LAN1 is the primary, default adapter at the top, followed by LAN2. But this hasn't availed any effect -- all of my traffic is still going through the LAN2 adapter.

Any ideas?

After running a "netstat -rn", I can see that the network metrics are appropriately set -- LAN1 is at the top with "11", followed by LAN2 with "13".

I'm pulling my hair out with this. I'm guessing that Windows is the culprit, rather than individual programs like my browsers. I've considered manually setting metrics on the two adapters, but with netstat showing that they're already appropriately metric'd (and not "obeying"), it doesn't seem like it'll avail the problem.

Answer:How do programs "decide" which network adapter to use? (Windows)

This might be a temp fix, but have you tried disabling both then re-enabling LAN2 then LAN1 and see if that flips the order? Or try disabling LAN2 see if LAN1 takes over then try again enabling LAN2?

Windows might just be set to automatically make use of the last enabled NIC. I'm guessing you have a reason for not teaming the NICs and instead running them separately connected to a default gateway with access to the Internet.

(I've just tried "preview post" several times and each time it's stripped the whitespace and turned my ten paragraphs into a megaparagraph. I'm going to try pressing "submit new thread" and hope it doesn't do it this time.)

My Wacom tablet's pen has died and I hope to have a new one arriving in a few days but in the meantime I dug out an old Hanvon Rollick tablet which isn't supported under Windows 10 (which I use) but I nevertheless found some Windows 7 drivers for it which people reported working under Windows 10.

The problem is my PC is trying to behave like a tablet e.g. putting that blue teardrop thing on text boxes on Chrome (I'm not sure of its correct name) and when I try to ctrl-click a link, it shows a little "ctrl" label under the cursor and won't open the link in a new tab like it's supposed to and just does it in the same tab.

It takes multiple tries to right-click and open a link and when I hover over the link the cursor keeps rapidly flashing between the arrow and finger icons.

It is very difficult to click minimise, restore or close on Chrome because hovering over them doesn't make them go red and clicking on them doesn't tend to make them do anything unless you try many, many times. It's being profoundly irritating in programs other than Chrome too but those are some examples.

Hello. We've got an unusual problem when applying driverpackage for lenovo x201.OSD with SCCM 2007.. The Audio driver installs successfully during OSD (with silent install switch) and in devicemanager we can see that the conexant 20585 Smart Audio HD driver has been installed. Same with "Intel screen audio". But in the Audio options in controlpanel all the fields is grayed out. There is with other words no associated soundcard / standard device. If we install the driver again, logged in as an user the recently grayed out fields in Audio options automagically now shows the correct input / output devices (Conexant audio) and the sound starts working. Is there some issue when installing drivers in SYSTEM context?Notice: There is no "?" in device manager. BR!

Perhaps the cable got severed when you were turning it around? I've had a Wifi antenna cable break this way on an HP tablet... hi guys i really want to try a windows 8 tablet and i plan to buy it either by the end of this month or by next January. I am confused on what to pick though
First of all, the reason why I want a windows 8 tablet IS because i like the interface. but more importantly, i need metatrader and cTrader in legacy app as im a full time forex trader. I have metatrader in my iphone but you cant seriously compare that with the windows version (no tabbing, no lines drawing, no fibonacci, etc.). cTrader doesnt even exist there.
im looking to replace my macbook pro (which btw i also installed windows 8 on it through parallels virtual desktop) with a windows 8 tablet to support my trading while im outside
So basically I dont need a super i7 tablet or something. However, im curious to know how windows 8 atom tablets perform. I have seen enough reviews and some people says atom tablets perform badly in legacy apps. Question is, how bad is that bad? Does it lag so bad even though i dont need to run heavy apps like adobe? I only need to run these trading apps which btw are very light. You can compare them with MS paint i believe, just with constant connection.
would it do well in atom tablets? I dont want lags when i switch from win8 native apps to metatrader and cTrader.
next question - how does windows 8 tablet on-screen keyboard work with legacy apps? Would i have special gesture to show up the on-screen keyboard or it automatically appears when i touch the screen? I personally dont believe ... Read more

Hi all,    I have a really annoying x220 tablet disconnects from the internet whenever I enter tablet mode. The internet can be working perfectly fine while in non tablet mode but as soon as I switch to tablet mode, my internet disconnects. And if I switch back to non tablet mode from tablet mode, my internet returns almost instantaneously. I can load a page in non tablet mode with no problems, switch to tablet mode and the page stops loading. If I return back to non tablet mode the page resumes loading without so much as a pause or a hiccup. Also, when I switch the computer to tablet mode, wifi networks disappear off of the "available networks" list that were there before the switch.     I've tried everything, from updating network device drivers, reinstalling network device drivers, running diagnostics, reformatting my computer, uninstalling Norton Antivirus, system restoring to days before the last known working date in normal mode and safe mode, and contacting customer support (chat and call, managed to get a hold of a rep) but none of them have worked.    I also used to have a networking log before I reformatted/system reset to factory settings and there were a ton of errors with words like avsc manager failed to "something" ... If it is still under warranty, call Lenovo. IF you tried to reset to factory defaults, and it is still failing, then you have something else that is going bad. My suspicion would be memory as that is what happened to me although it was on a desktop. Something to check...good luck.

I have a wierd problem - I have six X61 Tablets, all with XP SP3.  One of them gets the BSOD on every boot during the XP Logo scroll.  This occurs on both its original drive and if I put in an HDD which works fine in another chassis.  Note that it will copy (clone) that disk fine if I follow normal protocol using Acronis True Image Home 2010 CD (on the ultrabase with either CD or DVD) - it clones USB drive to HDD fine, then that HDD works fine in another chassis, but gives the same BSOD when I try to run it in this chassis.  I am pulling my hair out trying to figure what is different, as I am unaware of any setup or BIOS changes.  Any ideas?  Could a bad CMOS battery cause this?  I have yet to try a new HDD setup from Lenovo disk set, but that is my next try.  I hoped to get insight here first, though.  Thanks in advance. Joe Holzer

Well, I've finally had it. I've had my 6365 CTO X60 tablet pc for over a year now and last Monday I lost pen functionality in tablet pc mode in the afternoon after working fine in the morning. It works fine, even now after rotating the screen back to laptop mode. As soon as the screen is rotated back to tablet pc mode, no pen functionality but the mouse still works fine so I know it's functional in laptop mode but rotate back, all ok!  I did uninstall the Wacom drivers, restart, and then downloaded the tablet pc, windows xp version drivers from the site as instructed in a previous post. Unfortunately, the digitizer pen is still disabled in tablet pc mode and works fine when rotated back to laptop mode. I've called Lenovo tech support in Atlanta four times now and they've been totally useless. I wiped out my X60 tablet last Friday and used Rescue and Recovery to reinstall the operating system back to it's factory settings. I went back and unistalled and reinstalled the Wacom driver. Nothing. Since that didn't work either I've requested the box to ship this back to the Memphis Depot. Hopefully, I'll just get a new replacement machine that works but I'm so angry and frustrated w/ Lenovo's support because it's obvious that the people on the phone are not tech specialists and they couldn't even point me in a direction to get this fixed. It's cost me over a week now wo... Answer:X60 tablet pc digitizer pen functionality disabled in tablet pc mode

Problem solved! While the support folks weren't able to fix the problem over the phone, they did overnite me a prepaid return box which I sent back that day. Two days later they overnited my X60 tablet back fixed with a note saying 'LCD enabled'. I'm impressed how quickly they got my tablet pc back up and running. I'm glad I got that 3-yr. support warranty because I usually opt out of those things. This totally paid for itself. I just wish I hadn't been so reluctant to send back my laptop because I do need it for work and I figured I wouldn't get it back for at least a week or longer. I was so frustrated and pessimistic that I forgot sometimes these problems do get fixed in a very satisfactory manner. It's too bad the initial steps that led to sending it back were so painful. Bottom line: Lenovo fixed my pc quickly, no questions asked. Thanks!

I understand that your fan/temperature problems can be frustrating.  I would try updating your BIOS and also updating Power Manager.  (Some on the forum have tried downloading ThinkPad Fan Control, but that is not an official Lenovo solution.)
Download Power Manager here:
Download BIOS Update here:
In Power Manager, click Advanced at top right, you can Set Optimize Fan Control to Balance All Parameters under Battery Settings.  Set it to Reduce Noise Dynamically under AC.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi I have installed 64bit windows 7 on my machine quite recently in order to utilise the extra ram. When i rotate the screen clockwise to tablet mode, the screen will auto rotate to primary potrait by default and the buttons will work as usual. However, when i swivel my screen anti clockwise to tablet mode, the screen will NEVER auto orientate to primary potrait mode and all the tablet buttons will not work if i rotate the screen ANTI CLOCKWISE. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks alot in advance for the replies

I'm new to the Tablet community but excited to venture into it.  My workplace provided me with an X201 Tablet type 2985 model C5U.  The pen works great but I can emulate any of the finger/touch demos.  Is this not supported with my type or model?  Or do I need a special driver.  When I open the tablet PC settings, I'm given the option to identify my screen as PEN or TOUCH.  While I select TOUCH, no finger combination (one or two) that presses my screen will invoke anything.  I was hoping this would be a touch solutoin albeit more powerful than the iPad.  Appreciate your responses everyone. Thank you. L

So the DV port on my asus eee pc 1005peb is failing, and got the idea from android central to look into tablet and tablet hybrids. I kind of like the idea of having a hybrid for both the netbook kind of experience combined with a tablet experience. I'm having trouble discovering what my brands and model options are for that type of device. I'm concerned from what little I have seen so far I'm going to be against a cost prohibitive wall compared to spending $100 to have the port replaced. I'm one to figure if I'm going to toss that kind of cash into a repair I might as well consider replacing it with something else instead of doing the repair.
For my desktop PC I hesitant on going to windows 8 because of a lot of negative stuff I've heard but at the same time I hear good stuff about it too. But when it comes to a portable device like my netbook and a tablet. I think hm windows 8 (not RT) sounds like it would be a good fit since it is designed for both traditional mouse and keyboard input and touchscreen input. Plus I would like to retain the software I use on my netbook to use on whatever replaces it. Something I can't do with my current HP touchpad with webOS and android (CM9) on it. I tried using both as a replacement for my netbook but in the end there were just too many things I didn't like about that. I let my dad take my netbook out of town with him for about 2 month and was trying to use the touchpad as a replacement. I was glad to have my netbook back to use it again.

Has anyone run into the problem where there is no audio on an X61 tablet even though SoundMax drivers are shown to be installed properly?  Any help would be appreciated. Thx

Answer:No audio on X61 tablet running Window XP Tablet Edition

I have the same issue right now on an X60 tablet that I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate.  All of my drivers are up to date, except it shows on windows update that I have an audio driver still to update.  I go through the process, and then it will not install the update.  I wish I could help with this more, but wanted to let you know that others have similar problems. I hope someone can help us.B

Answer:Yoga 2 13 Tablet Screen turns off when in Tablet Mode

Try updating your drivers first: that does not help, try a factory reset:1. Turn off your Yoga 2 132. Press the tiny button next to the power button on the right3. Follow instructions to perform a factory resetIf none of the above attempts have helped you, it is probably a hardware issue.

The bay trail tablets come with office 2013 preinstalled, I cracked my asus t100 and wanted to move office to my new dell venue 11 pro core i3 version. I downloaded office and it got to the point where it needed to check if any other computers are using the license. So of course with it being activated on the asus it didn't let me. So is there anyway of deactivating it from the asus and transferring it to the dell or is the office version "special" that came with the bay trail tablets?

I have a new X220 Tablet, and the Pen and Tablet functions work perfectly out of the box as long as the unit is on the Ultrabase. As soon as I remove from the Ultrabase (or boot while not connected), the Pen & Tablet functions stop working. Conversely, if I dock the X220, the Pen & Tablet functions begin working again. The behavior is the same regardless of whether I have an external monitor attached or not. Any thoughts?

Hey all, I have a weird problem.  My tablet buttons have stopped working-- but only in tablet mode.  That is, I can't rotate, or bring up the tablet shortcuts, or move around the screen in tablet mode.  Also autorotate doesn't work.  But if I switch out of tablet mode, I can do all of these things just fine (except for autorotate). Also, when I switch into tablet mode the screen doesnt rotate or anything, but when I switch out of tablet mode the screen rotates to the direction I defined in the settings (sometimes.. to be honest it seems pretty random to me).  I am running 32 bit vista w/ 4 gb ram on an x61 tablet with the latest drivers.  I have uninstalled the tablet button drivers and the lenovo system interface and reinstalled them already.. I have the latest APS. Help me out here.. I have no idea why this isn't working!  Don't make me have to reinstall vista to get the buttons working.. Tha'ts ridiculous!!  Arrrgh.

I have left my system virtually untouched as far as hardware goes for the last 2 years. Just recently i ordered a new video card (evga 8800gts 640mb) and processor (A64x2 4200+). This means a reformat for me.

But I cant decide on which OS to go with. Some people have suggested I go with Vista, but I hear the driver horror stories and it makes me shudder. Right now I have 2 options immediately availible to me, windows 2000 and windows XP 64bit. I used 2000 up until about 7 months ago when i switched to xp64 when all the driver stuff was worked out. It runs everything fine... but it has problems with a few older games (tribes 2 is the biggest one that comes to mind).
I mostly game on my system (eve online, CSS, BF2142, soon to be Bioshock)... but I do other stuff (video/audio/photo editing). Should I stick with xp64? Or have the bugs/drivers been worked out with Vista and I should give that a shot? If so... which version? Ive been out of the tech loop for those 2 years and I have no idea what the hells going on with the copies of vista. so confusing

Answer:Cant decide on an OS.....

While not a full on endorsement to upgrade to Vista Home Premium x64 version, I did do that upgrade this weekend.

All the hardware in my sig had 64bit drivers and is running rock solid in Vista x64. The only problem I encountered is that my Anti-virus software (McAfee) supported Vista but not the x64 bit version. Currently Symantec and CA seem to be the two that support the x64 version. McAfee says it's coming soon, but how long can you run without an antivirus?

Overall, I find that the x64 benefits helps to offset the impact Vista has on game performance. So I've the newer OS and gaming performance like my system was in XP Pro (not the x64 version of XP).

I would recommend staying clear of Windows 2000 due to not all patches being released to that OS any longer. You can pay extra for extended patching support, but why? XP Pro at a minimum is the best idea if you'd like to not move to Vista.

I have been using this OS for about 3 weeks now, and I still cannot decide if I really like it or if I am still just trying to like it. I think with a touch screen I might be 100% sold on it, but I don't have a touch screen.

What I am noticing, is that most of the metro apps I have installed are not very useful/don't work so good. This is not a deal breaker, as the store is still young and I have a sense that better things will come with time. Still, it is true now.

I keep seeing these commercials about how this OS is really customize-able, and how each person can really make the ui their own. I think this is a total hunk of rubbish and probably the opposite of the truth unfortunately. There is very little wiggle room for customization in this OS. If anything, I felt like my desktop in Windows 7 was more my own than this metro start screen. In 8, the backgrounds and colors are all preloaded, and you have to choose from the canned options given by microsoft. The Start menu is gone, and no way to bring it back is included for those who prefer it. I feel no affinity to my start screen, even though I have been using it for 3 weeks, and I wonder how many others are probably having this same feeling.

All this said, I like the idea of the app store, and I can see potential in what they are trying to do. At the moment, I don't like any of the apps though. Everyone one of them (aside from the games) feels a bit rushed and half baked, with limited functionality. ... Read more

Hi guys I was just wondering which of the following setups would be better for gaming:

Core 2 Duo E6300 and 7600GT

Athlon 64 3500+ and 7900GT

This is assuming that all the other parts in the system are the same. Also, I cannot buy the Core 2 AND the 7900GT due to budget restrictions.

Answer:Can't decide what to buy

Yeesh. Tough call.

Is that Athlon system an AM2 system?

As they are now, that 3500+ w/ 7900GT would probably outperform the Core 2 Duo system from a stricly gaming standpoint. The graphics card does most of the work.

But that 3500+ cpu is going to get dated real quick as games start taking advantage of dual core CPUs more and more.

Me? If I was building a new system now, I'd have to get a dual core CPU.

so, would you go with DSL or Cable...and which VoIP...?

VoIP blows unless your provider has QoS to make sure a large download/upload doesnt interfere with your phone calls. Just be sure whoever serves your internet connection is also your VoIP provider....

Hello all old  friends:      The PC  I am using is rather old. I dettermined to buy a new one.      In the market, two brands attracted my eyes: 15-ay041wm and 15-039wm.  The majour difference of the two is "Touchscreen"      I hope you tell me: (1) How is these 2 brand PC ? (2) The "touchscreen" is a new function, is itgood for users?        Thanks in advance.

Answer:Tell me how to decide?

Those are both Wal-Mart laptops and yes, the only difference is the touchscreen. The prices I saw were around $350 for an i3 processor, 8 gigs of RAM, a 1 TB hard drive. The -041 has a DVD burner, too and I assume they both do.  Touchscreen is very popular but I have to say I don't really use it on a laptop. It is a bit awkward to lean over the keyboard and touch to control actions when you have a mouse and keyboard. To me, touch is for tablets without a keyboard but adding the touch does not hurt anything and for $20 extra it is worth exploring if you like it.  Only objection I can see is the 1366 x 768 screen and the hard drive (mechanical). I like something with higher resolution, and a solid state drive but you pay a premium for that. I don't think you are going to find any stronger specs for $339 or $359.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I'm looking at possibly upgrading my computer, in the near future. I'm not much of a gamer, mostly Civilization 5, SWTOR, WoW, and perhaps some other games in the future... (Mass Effect 3, etc). I mostly do Photoshop work, and watch videos online and on disc.

I've narrowed it down to basics of what I'd like in the case, but can't decide between AMD or Intel.

Which config would you say is better for my wishes? $2,000 is probably my limit.

AMD FX 8-Core Configurator

Intel Z68 Core i5/i7 Configurator
Or should I wait for something new?

Answer:can't decide which is better...

The Z68 is the better system... with these recommended changes:

A - dump the water cooling.

B - dump the Overclock... do a bit of research, you do this yourself - takes seconds. And OC shouldn't be done on brand new hardware... after a month or so, then OC... give them some burn-in. You may find your PC so fast that why bother? OC is not for long-term hardware.

C - Get a single 7770 card rather than dual 7750s. Review on new 77x0 cards:

The 7800 series isn't out yet for another month or so.

With that BUILD, dual 7750s are not much bang for your buck. For $3 less the ICQ-6870 is a faster single card - easily and will always be faster with better cooling.

D - Corsair Graphite 600T Gaming Case is a nicer case, I think... but its a lot bigger... Cases don't matter too much as long as they are in the same category of quality. I also like the Antec P280 case.. here are some heat & noise benchmarks.

E - I'd take Gigabyte motherboard over ASUS

F - PSU is overkill... $250? Get the Corsair 750TX or 850TX. More than enough power to handle any SINGLE video card setup with 4 hard drives.

F - I'd go with an intel 120GB 320 or 520 series drive (520 is SATA3) for reliability.

Ending price is $1858 with my config with the P280 case,Corsair 850TX PSU and i320-120GB.

Depends what for. If you want to make a drive image, Acronis would be much better. If you just want to back up a bunch of individual files and folders, Vista's built-in functionality should be sufficient.

Question: I can't decide

Im stuck on 3 graphics cards. I'm not going over 200 bucks (not including shipping). So I have a few questions.

1. I heard GDDR3 memory is unstable?
2. Is it important that the card has open GL 2.0?
3. Is it important that the card has the shader model 3 of direct x?

The ATI X700 pro is what Im leaning toward, but I have an intel chipset and processor, will I have compatability issues? I've heard multiple people say that ATI goes with AMD and Nvidea goes with Intel.

alright, help me make up my mind! im close to putting my computer together!

Answer:can't decide!

The x800 is a bad choice. Lack of software support and a lot of the games don't play well on it at all right now.

The 6600GT is VERY overclockable, the eVGA is best, but Giga-Byte is also solid, on that price difference, I would just go with the Giga-byte.

Answer:Help me decide!

Your worst nightmare just happened. An Intel guy logged into your thread.

That said, I shant tarry.

Buy a Gigabyte board. (period). Which particular one, you can figure out.

Despite a lower memory bit access spec, (256 bit GTX-460) vs (448 bit GTX-260), the GTX-460, (on paper at least) seems to outperform it.. (This is on a 1 GB GTX-460 card only). Plus it has way more "CUDA" cores, (336 vs 192), whatever that means. (I think it's important though).

The GTX-460 is current line and has GDDR-5 and DX-11. Something to think about.

Oh, before I forget an Antec "902" is actually a 900 "2". But it does seem to run all together when you try and say it, yes? Great case, BTW.

Dear members,

Please help me decide on buying a new PC since i dont know much about computers. I already have a 6 year old toshiba laptop and which is still works fine but has fairly old features (256 mb, usb 1.1, 30 GB, old graphic card, etc). These are the minumum requirements I am looking for in a PC:

512 RAM (if windows vista isn't installed)
30 GB
usb 2.0
a way to connect to TV via HDMI or S-video inputs
at least has windows XP home edition or media center
Famous Brand Like Sony, Dell, Toshiba, HQ,
Price Range $700-$2500

I will be using mainly for selling item on ebay, surfing, downloading vidoes from site like rapidshare and saving to an external HD, watching anime/drama by connecting a TV, and playing MMORPG games like world of craft (but not games that require the latest graphic card etc).

I won't be doing nothing like video/picture editing, burning CD or DVD or anything that require a lot of processing power, transfering files from digital camera or phone, and wireless route or internet connection (but wireless keyboard/mouse is okay)

Please also let me know should I get PC that has windows vista (I have window xp home edition which is just fine for me) and any other feature I should also look for. thank you very much!

Answer:Please HELP me decide what PC I Should BUY

Do you want another laptop or could this new computer be a desktop? If you look at laptops and desktops with comparable features, the desktops normally cost less. So, at a specific price level, you can expect to get a higher performing system by getting a desktop. Desktops also are much more flexible in terms of future upgrades.

And, whether a laptop or desktop, you can easily find models with 1GB of memory at the lower end of your price range. So, go for at least 1GB.

And, why would you state 30GB as the minimum size hard drive for a new system? You can't even find new systems with hard drives that small. Think in terms of at least 80GB in a laptop and probably twice that size in a desktop, even at the lower end of your price range.

Genuinely curious, not looking for an argument here, but how or who decides who gets help on this forum?

I've noticed there are many unanswered threads (including my own) while other have posts in mid to high double figures in the thread.

Question: Can't decide on OS

Just ordered all the hardware for a new build, and I can't decide on what OS (or OSes) I'm going to use. I'm leaning towards sticking with Windows XP Pro 32 bit just because it's what I'm familiar with. Anyone want to pitch to me XP Pro 64 bit or Vista Ultimate 64 bit? I have this desire to get the most out of my ram, try vista, and try 64 bit processing, but I'm hesitant to put money into something that might end up bringing me grief.

Answer:Can't decide on OS

64 bit OSes shouldn't bring you any grief, especially Vista x64, if you plan ahead, check your applications compatibility, and make sure you get the right drivers for your hardware. You didn't post any planned system specs, so we can only make assumptions at this point. Considering how cheap DDR2 is right now, there really isn't much of a reason not to go to 4 GB, which would also put you into the x64 category. As for which OS, XP or Vista, that choice should be made by you and you alone. XP is stable and what you're familiar with, but many of us who are using Vista x64 love it, and won't go back.

Hi I'm trying to build a competent gaming rig, I have a 312mb 8800gts with 4gb of ram, but every game seems to complain about my CPUs core speed which is 2.0GHz.

I thought about buying a Dual Core Athlon 7750 Black Edition with a core speed of 2.7GHz and a bus speed of 1800MHz for $113nzd but there is also a Triple Core Phenom 8650 with a core speed of 2.3GHz but it has a bus speed of 3600MHz, all for $148nzd.

My question is which would be better for gaming? Other suggestions are welcomed as well.

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies.

Answer:Can't decide what CPU to buy

I'd go for the 2.7 Ghz as it is faster and cheaper than the 2.3 Ghz.
