Win 8 Enterprise x64, non local administrator user.
I can not change music's rating or other stuff from details pane. In local administrator user I can. Should I change my account type or any help?
Also the music is at external HDD
Thanks
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Check that your files haven't suddenly become "Read-only".
Also try running CHKDSK to check the drive.
After I've used one of my external HDDs at TAFE, my PC claims that it is "Read-only" and it takes several CHKDSK commands to fix the problem.
Of course after CHKDSK is finished, it says that there weren't any problems.
Good afternoon everyone, Here is the problem. I am trying to get a standard view for the files under 'My Music' and all subfolders. Does not seem to work. Let us take an example: In the My Music\classical\ subfolder all the subfolders below that are artists names and the files may consist of mp3, mp4, m4a, flv, swf, some txt, occasional mpeg. It seems that if the folder contains all mp3 files then I can select 'name', 'size' & 'length' and in folder options I select view>apply to all folders then it will display correctly. But not if there are mp4, m4a, and flv mixed or some other combination. Then (whoever is in charge of my computer) adds all the additional columns and I wind up clicking away to remove the offending details only to have to do it again and again. Is there a way to do it 'my way'? Thanks for viewing!

How can I re-associate .mp4 files with video details displaying in the Details Pane? After installing the K-lite codecs pack, my mp4's all began displaying in the details pane as audio files (Album, Artist etc) and no longer displays the important video default details (size, frame height, bitrate etc). I assume it was because of incorrectly associating file types when installing the codecs (even though wmv's, avi's are still correct), so I uninstalled the codecs but the Details categories remain for typical audio files. I've exhausted The Google and I'm stumped... any help? (Win7, 32-bit with VLC as my default player) Thanks!
Have you tried resetting your Folder Templates?

Hi,I'm using Windows 7 Professional x64. When I use Windows Explorer to view image files (jpg, png, etc.), I would like to see each image's dimensions listed in the Details Pane (when it's set to view the images as Icons/Thumbnails, rather than Details). However, the only details that show up in the Details Pane are Name, Type, Date Created, Date Modified, and Size. This is the case even though:* I've checked 'Dimensions' in the 'Choose Details' options* The folder is already categorized/optimized for 'Pictures'* Other folders show the other details I want -- i.e., the Details Pane for my 'Videos' folder shows Length, Frame Width, Frame Height, and other details that I've chosenAny suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.
I think you are asking Windows Explorer to do more than it is intended to do.Try using infranview to view the folder. Get infranview at the link below.http://www.irfanview.com/
3 more repliesI believe that's what it's called, in Windows Explorer there's a load of Shortcuts on the left, how can I edit them, I'd like to remove unneeded things as well.
Also can you modify the shortcuts in the download pane? It has I believe 5 shortcuts on the left which I'd like to customise. In Xp I just used TweakUI to do that, but I don't know anything about Windows 7.
Make a screenshot of it. And show which ones you want to change.
Do you mean folder %userprofile%\links ?

A long story short is that my cat ran over my keyboard and now all my folders have a preview/details pane I can't get rid of. I read it could be removed by going to Folder Options, General, Use Classic View. Well guess what, there is no classic view! I included two screenshots to show my problem.

3 more repliesA fairly simple question:
Has anyone tried to (or found a third party app) that can put the details pane back to the bottom of the File Explorer windows, like it was in 7. It was of great use to me when reading tags and other information. In 8, it just takes needless width space from the windows.
Shell32.dll but modifyng it crashes windows 8 (at least in CP/RP), havent tried in RTM yet.

Thanks!

Hello,
Click Here to download abcAVI, save it to your desktop, once download is complete run installer => Open up abcAVI => On the top menu bar the first icon will let you select one movie file to edit, the second icon will allow you to select a whole directory to edit all movie files in it, once in the movie just go down to Genre and choose the one you would like or type in your own => Click Save once done
is there anyway i can display my details panel on the bottom ? like it used to on win 7?
because windows 10 shows it on right hand side, but it's just taking too much of the space on my screen, it's really inconvenient when you open 2 folders and snap to sides and modify files.
Was just thinking the same thing. Here is how my Win7 workstation looks (about perfect to me! Note Classic Explorer is also running).

Hello! I would like to somehow know how to move the details pane from bottom to the top, like this:
Thank you!
I just did a reinstall of XP Pro and am having trouble with video files being "in use" when trying to move/delete them (only a several second lag, but it is annoying me). It has to do with a preview being generated in the details pane in the bottom left corner of Explorer. I eventually figured out how to turn off the preview option on my last install but have forgotten how I did it. Under folder options I have "do not cache thumbnails" unchecked. Is this the setting I need to change? Or is it somewhere else? It seems to me I need an option to not show a preview in the details pane.
Thanks for any suggestions.
I haven't done an XP install, but I have had problems like yours. Here is how I fix them without reinstalling, in case it may help? (The instructions may be different for XP.)
Thumbnails are used as icons when the folder is in Thumbnail view. This is usually not the problem, since they are usually cached after the first time. I turn them off by getting the Properties window for that folder. (I just go to the parent folder and right-click on the folder there, then choose Properties.) Then in one of the tabs, I find the Enable thumbnail view option and uncheck it. But, again, this is probably not the problem.
The preview thumbnail (actually, the whole details pane) can be turned off by unchecking View as Web Page in the View menu in one folder. Or, you can turn it off for all folders by going to View menu > Folder Options > General tab > choose Custom, then click the Settings button and in the View Web Content in Folders section, choose Only for folders where I select "as Web Page" [View menu]
If I want the details pane, but not the preview, I edit the HTML of the window. I don't know if you want to try this, it can be confusing, but here's what I do, just in case:
I right-click on the detail pane (or you can use the View menu), and click Customize this Folder... then choose create or edit HTML document. This allows me to customize that details pane. To remove only the worst case files from the preview, I see if I can find "var w... Read more

Is there a way to display file folder location in the details pane view?
In the search box I've type *.* and it display all files. There are duplicate files I want to delete so I want to see which folder they're in without checking each file's properties.
Thanks in advance.
In order to customize which fields are displayed in the details pane for a given file type you can:
1. Run Regedit.
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SystemFileAsso ciations\.mp3 (Or whatever file type you want to edit.)
3. Edit the PreviewDetails string.
My question is:
Is there a way to do something similar for folders? Currently, the only info displayed in the details pane when a folder is selected is Date modified, and Availability. I would like to add other details to this pane (Size, Date created etc...). Is this possible?

I have this problem with the vista details pane and I have not been able to find any solution. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Premium version. The problem is that:
1. My details pane is missing a lot of properties/tags . Only ones that are appearing are file date, file name, dated created.
2. When I go into a MP3 folder, same thing happens as I described in 1. Just the 4 tags appear and I don?t get any other tags that used to be there like artist name, rating, title, etc.
3. I cannot edit any Tag in the details pane. When everthing was working fine, I could go in the MP3 folder , I could edit the title, ratings etc. and Save it. But now I can?t do anything, the save button does not appear and the tags don?t go in edit mode.
Up till now I have tried the following solutions:
1. I have reset all the folder options in Vista by going to Folders/tools/reset defaults. (did not work)
2. After resetting the folders, I have also turned on the details pane option under Organize/Layout and the details under the Views. (did not work)
3. Under View, in the tool bar, I went to Customize This Folder and chose the Music Folder Option, All Items etc. (did not work)
4. Then on the Microsoft site, I found this solution ? Open Documents by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Documents., and click a file to apply properties. Then In the Details pane at the bottom of the folder window, click the property that you want to change, type the new property in the Tags.? But it did not work ei... Read more

If it wasn't that long ago, you could try system restore.
Did you use a "registry cleaner" or an "optimizer"?
On the properties window, general tab, what is it set to "open with"?

Hai Im new here..
Recently I was trying to add comments to movie folders so that i can keep a brief description about it when i click on it. It was easy to add comment then i had a bit trouble to get the comment getting displayed in the details pane...after playing with the registry for a while i got that solved as well.
Now I ended up with a problem where the comment being displayed eds with just some 3 or 4 words with the remaining given in dots (...) and I get a full display of it when i hover the mouse over it, which obviously goes way in 5 seconds or so.
So what i need is to find a way to expand what ever that is shown in the details pane so that it shows the entire content in consecutive lines without being restricted to one line (without having to hover a mouse)
You might get a picture of it if you have a small details pane on the right and make it show your processor details when you open thisPC.
This is what i mean, if no one gets it :P
1 more repliesDoes anyone know how to edit the details that appear at the bottom of the screen when you select a file? I'm not talking about the details that you can change when you select view but the one at the very bottom of the screen.
Thank you
Try this:

Once installed, go to the details tab of a files properties, and you can edit them as you wish, which will also appear at the bottom of Windows Explorer.
For some reason when I go to the layout menu in Vista Exploer (Explorer --> Organize --> Layout) there is no details pane listed. Is there a way to get that back?
I checked to see that "Show Previews and Filters" is selected" and it is. I tried unselecting and reselecting it and that didn't work.
Thanks

0 more repliesThe details pane used to show a thumbnail preview of the first page of Adobe Acrobat documents when I selected the file. This was extremely helpful to me due to the nature of how I file these documents, as I didn't have to open the files - I only had to select them. As of this morning, the details pane only shows the name of the document and does not display a thumbnail preview of the first page. How do I fix this? Thank you!!
Hello.
I've been trying to re-organize my photo collection. Previously, I had been using Windows Live Photo Gallery to tag my photos, and admittedly it was convenient. Recently, though, the program has gone on the fritz to where thumbnails aren't loading so it's harder to differentiate photos simply by the file name in cases where I have a lot of photos of the same group or folder. While I've tried a lot of troubleshooting to get the thumbnails to load, and would gladly take advice on that issue, in the meantime I'm trying to accomplish the same thing using the details pane in explorer.
When I highlight a photo right now, most file types load the date stamp, tags, rating, author(s) and comments properties in the details pane. However, I'd like to edit the people properties so I can tag individuals in the photos. I have not seen a way to easily do that short of using other software (such as Photo Gallery).
Does anyone know if there's a way to do this through explorer or will it require a separate application?
You are talking about edit Exif data. There are programs out there that allow you to do that.
4 more repliesIs there any way to permanently remove or disable all of the various "views" in the Windows 7 Navigation Pane *except* for Details? If a subdirectory contains audio files I *never* want to see "Album" or "Artist" or any of the rest of that garbage. If the subdirectory contains an image file I *never* want to see a thumbnail of images. If I need more information about a file I'll right click on it and select Properties, thankyewverymuch!
In short, when I click anywhere in the left or right panel in the Navigation Pane I never want to see *ANYTHING* except the file name, type, size, and date modified. If it isn't a file (e.g. Network, etc.) just show me a computer or device name, not some massive image of a router or other waste of my time.

You can modify the folder templates for different folder types like Music, Pictures, etc. where you can specify things like that.
These should get you on track to setting those up:

Hi,
please see my screenshot, my details pane is not showing any codec information.
I had to reinstall after a windows 10 update killed my computer (update loop bsod - I can't believe updates are stilling crashing computers).
before the details pane use to show codec info like:
Video Codec, example VC-1, AVCAudio Codec, example DTS, TrueHD
how do I get it to show?
One way is to use this
File Metadata - Home
and use its file association manager to enable it for extensions you're interested in.

In Windows 8.1, I want to customize the properties displayed in the Details Pane for ALL of my MP3s . (That is, I do not mean removing/modifying the properties on an individual MP3/music file. I mean choosing what gets displayed in the Details Pane for all music files.)
In XP (which I love and miss), I do believe the Details Pane could be customized easily, but I see no way to do that in 8.1. For example, I want to display Artist, Album, Year, Track #, Size, and Duration ONLY. How do I remove Rating, Genre, Title, etc.
Also, can I remove the "breadcrumbs" (...) and have the full line displayed? In XP, everything was displayed. Now you have to hover over something to see it. How is that better?
I miss XP's file manager!
How do I change the font style in the Windows Explorer details pane using Windows Style Builder?

I want to make some specific changes to the default Preview Details string for picture files in Windows Explorer. I have found an excellent write-up on how to edit that string using regedit, but the author was only interested in the specific around music. In the attached picture, I show the file properties/attributes that I am interested in placing in the Detail Pane. The current edited string is shown below.
prop:System.Photo.DateTaken;System.Keywords;System.Title;System.Subject;
*System.Photo.PeopleNames;*System.Contact.Location;*System.Contact.StateOrProvince;
*System.Contact.Country;System.Comment;*System.DateCreated;*System.DateModified;
*System.SharedWith
As you can see, some work, others don't. Is there a comprehensive list of these properties and their syntax in the form
(*)System.xxxx.yyy
that one can refer to when modifying the string?
Hi,
I must apologize in advance for any forthcoming ignorance, as I am a forum newbie. Using Win8.1, I am trying to relocate the Details Pane in Explorer from the space wasting right side to the well fitting & familiar bottom.
Fix I found is here: How To Move Details Pane To The Bottom In Windows 8.1 File Explorer
Has anyone had any experience in general with this tool? Haven't been able to find out any more jnfo either way othter than the link.
Thank you in advance for your time.
Better use Old New Explorer:
OldNewExplorer - make your 8.1/10 explorer work like Win7/8 one - StartIsBack+ - MSFN Forum
It has some other features but the one you are searching for is one of them. It doesn't always make the hack but it is much safer than patching the shell32.dll

I was wondering if you know if there is a way to improve Vista's Video Preview on the Details Pane.
The problem I see is that Vista shows the very 1st second of video, while Windows 7 shows the 4th. That's why many of the video previews on the details pane show a black screen on vista instead of actual video.
If anyone else has the answer, I will be really grateful.
I guess you could edit that through the registry, but believe me, lol, to be honest Idk...
6 more repliesI do not want to see a large space to the right of my photos & files in file explorer. I want to see the full space filled with them. Hi, I just re-installed windows 7 on my desktop pc and have a question about the settings of the details pane in windows explorer (the one that appears and the bottom when you select a file). Previously when I selected video files (.mp4, .avi and .mkv) I would get the details at the bottom, the video frame width and height, size of file etc.. but since I reinstalled I don't get these details when I select video files. I know its only a small problem but I work with video files a lot and have gotten used to seeing the resolution of files without having to open them. Does anyone know how I can get the details pane to show these details again? At the moment it only displays the video size, name and state.
Here is a screen-shot of the details pane for a selected .mkv video file on my laptop, this is what I want it to display on my pc.
Is the folder set as a "Video" type?
Look at the properties of the folder, and there you will see a drop down list for the type.
I would like to see more audio details in win10 file explorer preview pane, especially the channels and bitrate for movies in the *.mkv format. (I would like to see if they include DTS 5.1, languages, subtittles etc.)
Before the latest creators update, this information was shown in the preview pane (along other video-details). Now I can't get it back. Icaros doesn't seem to help in this case.
What can I do?
Try MediaTab (free)

Hi! I just got a new computer with Windows 7 and there's this blue stuff underneath the Libraries Pane. I want to get rid of it because I don't like the way it looks and it makes my Windows 7 experience uncomfortable. I have a picture attached with what I want removed circled. Please tell me how to get rid of it. Thanks!
In the left pane right click Documents underneath Libraries then Properties.
Then exclude additional folders and public documents.
I googled the problem and NOTHING!!!!! many information NO LONGER is displayed in my details pane in Windows Explorer!!!!!! song length is one of them gone missing (& total length if multiple files are selected) and I use that frequently!!!!! it ONLY shows basic information now such as artist, title, album, and genre!!! but total length is GONE!!! also MANY UNRELATED INFORMATION is now in the details pane for media files!!!!!!! mood of music has been added (never heard of that tag), song rating, and composer now have been added!!!! it even displays ALL THIS SAME INFORMATION for WAV files when it used to be ONLY file size and length for WAV files!!!!!!! WAV is NOT capable of tags so I don't know why Windows Explorer shows this information for WAV files!!!!!!
HOW DO I GET MY DETAILS PANE BACK TO NORMAL???????
Can you post a screen shot of what you are seeing?

Hello Patrick,
I haven't forgot about you. I'm working on a tutorial for this now for you. It's a little bit complicated and detailed and trying to find an easier way, but I should have it posted later today. I'll post back with a link to the new tutorial when it's finished.
Hello, I was wondering about the possibility to increase the images thumbnail size on the details pane in file explorer, and to make the panel maller than allowed by default. Is it possible?
Thank you for your help
There seems to be a minimum size which is pre-defined, you cannot make it smaller. The preview and details pane size is set by the DetailsContainerSizer binary value in the Registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\GlobalSettings\Sizer
I do not know of way to make the thumbnail larger in the details pane. It is larger in the preview pane.
Hi. I have a huge music collection (20+ gigs) and I like to keep it super organized. What I want to know is if it is possible to make all the folders in my collection have the same "details." Right now, i have to go into each individual folder and go View > Choose Details and then choose each ones I want in that specific folder. All of the folders are going to have the same details so is there a way to change them all in one swoop?
Thanks,

Since you haven't specified the operating system I'm assuming it's Windows XP. I have attached two images. In XP, right click the root directory (ie MY MUSIC) for your music directory then click properties. Then click the Customise tab on the top. Under the first section 'What kind of folder do you want?' Select Music (best for audio files and playlist). (see image1.jpg) Then check the Also apply this template to all subfolders. (see image2.jpg) This will do the same setting to all for the folders within the root directory of the music folder. Then it will do your mass change for you.
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
mfeldman

Hey,
I have a question about the details pane.
Can I add a few more parameters to the little preview window on the right? (For music like BPM, Publisher etc)
I have inadvertently removed all the details in the details option which shows the bit depth and a myriad of other meta data when I select a music file and click on options then click on details. How can I get that information back?I have tried everything I can think of and done many searches but here I am asking here now.
I use dbpoweramp to get all the meta data and I use that information regularly but not anymore since it's gone,my bad.
If your are referring to explorer.
On the row which have Name, Size, Dates, etc.
Do right-click, and you can select what to show.
If you right-click and click on More.... options.
right now, if i click the customize button and choose "music" for my music folders, it shows 'name', '#', 'title', 'contributing artists', and 'album' as sortable columns.
i was hoping there was a way to customize which columns would appear by default in music folders, rather than having to right click the top bar and add different elements like 'comments' or 'genre' to each individual folder. (i'm a ocd music sorter, so each artist has it's own folder. it would be beyond tedious to add genre and comments to each folder, only to have those elements disappear when the folder is returned to default status)
any ideas?
First set the current folder to optimize for Music (Use the Music Template):
Right Click Folder > Properties > Customize > Choose "Music" from dropdown list
Now set the settings in the folder (view options, etc)
Now we'll apply those settings to all folder that use the Music Template:
Organize > Folder & Search Options > View > Apply to All Folders
Now if you have a music folder you just need to go to Properties > Customize > Music in order to it to display the way you like.

I've recently changed to Vista. In XP, if I "recorded" a song, I could right click the files, go to properties, and edit the details (artist, album, genre, etc.). In Vista, I can't find any way of changing these things. It is not a copy protected music file; its a music file that was recorded on my laptop. The name of the file is correct, but artist, album, genre, etc., are all blank.
How do I edit these files in Vista?
I opened them up in Adobe Bridge, and put in metadata, but this doesn't show up in the file information under properties.
Thanks!
I would expect that you'd have to run Windows Explorer as an administrator to do this.
To do this, go to Start and type in "windows explorer" (without the quotes). At the top of the search box will be an entry for Windows Explorer. Right click on that and select "Run as administrator" - then try going to the files in Windows Explorer and editing their properties there.
I just renewed my subscription to groove music and I would like to see my account details but I cannot find anyplace that says "my account" Where do I go to see my account?
Settings, next to your name in the navigation pane. Then click/tap Manage subscription.
more repliesHaving decided to use Vista's Mail/Contacts/Calendar, I was quite excited to see that when I hovered the mouse over the Extra Large Icon of a contact, all of his details appeared in the right hand side preview panel ...... for a moment!
Now that capability has disappeared altogether!
I have checked under Organize x Layout that the Preview Panel is checked but it remains blank all the time!
What have I (it) done to remove this handy feature?
........... but there's more ................. the contact's name comes up say michael smith.contact but I only want Michael Smith to show (not the word "contact").
When I try to rename it to a straight Michael Smith, Vista gets all upset and starts tellimg me that it probably won't work anymore if I persist!!
There's gotta be a way to rename these contacts!
I have a question regarding mp3 music files in folders. I keep these files (all album folders) in music folder on desktop. When I click any subfolder of these albums, I'd like to view them by track number, file (song name), artist and album name. (as shown in the screenshot below).
The problem is Windows 8.1 default gives me certain details such as type, size, date created. I know that I can select and unselect the little boxes after I right click the column header.
Is it possible to change the default for these details?
Thanks.
I use Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit.
I want my music files to be listed alphabetically as follows:
title rtist genre album
HEART OF GLASS Blondie Rock/Pop Parallell Lines
I go to properties and details and enter that information only and
I go to "view" and then "choose details" and check only the boxes
for title, artist, genre, and album as the details I wish displayed.
A day later some (not all ) of the files have returned to the
display that I do not want with the track number preceding the title
and sometimes including a rating, as follows:
title artist genre album rating
01 HEART OF GLASS Blondie Rock/Pop Parallell LInes ***
I used to have it set by folder size and date, but now it shows up as music and I have no idea how to change it. any ideas??
You can do it by date, but I don't know if you can do it by size. Windows usually doesn't have folder sizes listed in the directory view

This is my first time posting here; I'll try and keep it short.
I want to get a reasonable computer rig setup for doing 2 things; (1) Getting a really good, comprehensive software RTA/EQ for doing spectral analysis(2) Doing some multitrack demos and arranging of songs, typical sort of thing.
Here's what I have to work with:
(1)Mine: A later generation Pentium 3 PC, about 2 or 3 years old with a completely cleaned off drive, ready for action, no software or soundcard. Scored it for $50.
(2)My Wife's: Near-new Mac G5 with Garage band, but it's supposed to be her graphic design workstation...don't know how much music I'll be able to do with huge design files and programs bouncing around in there.
(3)A bunch of Pro Tools plug-in Accessories which includes about 4 or 5 RTAS (stands forReal Time Analyzer, I'm hoping) setups.
Here's the questions...
(1) Is there a way I can get the Pro Tools plug-ins to work on the PC (Unix files, if I remember correctly)? Can I get them to work on my wife's G5 in Garage Band? What do I need to do/get if either is possible?
(2) Does Garage Band work on a PC?
(3) Is an M Audio Delta 24/96 Audiophile Sound Card a good choice for these applications? Is there a way to use the card outboard (connectors, etc.) if I need to shuttle a soundcard between my PC and my wife's G5?
(4) Is there a decent Spectral Analyzer/EQ (graphic, probably) available on Shareware or Freeware? What w... Read more
Hi, I've had my music files for a long time, nothing has changed and I haven't done anything different in terms of music players.
The details for my music files (eg artist, song name etc) has disappeared in Windows Explorer but they show up in Winamp.
I am also unable to edit the file details. They're all mostly .mp3 files
When you open windows explorer check option ?Views? and set it to ?Details? so you should be able to see file name, size, type, artist, Album title, year, track number and duration.
You can open windows media player, go to library and check if you can edit each file listed there.
I'm looking for a program if anyone knows anything like this.
What I'm trying to do is just have a cheap XP machine I have extra hook up to the stereo downstairs. I want to be able to copy my cd's to the HD so I can play them without fumbling for CD's which the rest of the family, seems to lose all the time . Now I know of some good DVR related programs (GBPVR, MythTV, etc.) that can do this, but I want to do it without the need for a display. Maybe some kind of web interface that I can connect to from a computer in the house and play a certain music file or album on the stereo the computer is connected to.
Shoutcast comes to mind, but it doesn't play the music on the broadcasting machine I don't think. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Not sure if this is the right place to post this one as I guess it is an account issue, I have four devices plus an Xbox One, my desktop, Surface Pro 3, 1520 and Xbox One are all working fine, but as of last night my HP Stream 7 has gone a bit mad, it signs in OK at start up and on the desktop all looks fine.
When I start Groove Music it just doesn't see that I have a music pass (I do and the Stream is one of four devices signed up and was working yesterday afternoon), I cant really get it to do anything, non of the links like settings work, the same with Films and TV, it just sits there, a grey screen, yet I can launch Edge, come on here and it signs me on, the Xbox app, email, calendar, just about every app that I can try seems to be working.
If I go on the web from my desktop and log into my account I can see all my devices, it lists my Stream as a Music and Film and TV device, I can even use find my device to see where it is.
If I go into the store from the Stream 7 and click on music it says "You have a music pass"
Anyone else experiencing anything like this on HP Streams, or more realistically on any devices.
All devices as updated as far as possible with the Stream on 10586.71 I have shut down and done a few restarts, getting no where.
I gave up thinking about it and did a reset, it gave me something to do on a Sunday evening I suppose.
The real beauty of the Windows account system over multiple devices and OneDrive is you can just wipe a PC and be back up and running in very little time with no issues on loosing data.
OK I have ended up with one album in Groove music duplicated somewhere, but 1 out of 300 isn't bad (And it will be found and severely dealt with) and I haven't bothered putting every app back on it.
And although I have done this, I was starting to think it was time to retire the Stream 7, yes its a fun sized device, but my 1520 is maybe just too close and faster/better in all but web browsing (Sensitivity issue only on web browsers).
I find myself updating it but not using it much, I used to take it to work but as stated I have the 1520 so why?

Is it possible to create an app that can modify the modified date for files ie. modify a modified .htm page created offline but have the modified date changed to a date and time which is a minute later than the last file modified which is linked in the htm file?
Thanks.
The reason is that I had to modify a ton of .htm files I had created and now they are all displayed at the bottom of the folder instead of just after each image set and I don't want to have to manually move each file just after each image set in the folder...
I had to manually find all related files to OE6 to delete it so it would reinstall. Then the updates. Now nothing shows up on the preview pane or when I open the email. I can use Outlook instead but what is wrong? The only view of the message is in properties: details: message source.
1. With Outlook Express closed, go to Start>Run
2. Type in: regsvr32 inetcomm.dll (with the space after "regsvr32")
3. Click OK (or press the Enter key)
4. Open OE and see if things are fixed
When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).
Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?
FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.
Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.
Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.
https://explorerplusplus.com/
It's portable and runs without installation.
Let us know if navigation pane works using Explorer++
And, right clicking in the Recycle Bin gives no "Customize This Folder ..." option to select the regular "All Items" template view.
Anyone know how to fix this? Not getting anywhere with Google on this one.
update: Well, unhide OS files, and then open C:\ with details view. Then right-click $Recycle.Bin and then Properties -> Customize and Apply to all subfolders. Ah, also Control Panel -> Folder Options -> View -> Reset Folders. But it still comes up as Music Details from the desktop ... maybe a reboot.
update: No dice on the reboot. However now I have worse problems. The reboot killed my NexStar-3i enclosure when it got probed for USB boot. The bad news is I just MOVED all 400GB of my data onto it so I could reinstall, naturally. Plugged the drive into the computer, and it's fine. Stupid enclosure. Fugging heart attack.
Is it possible to have no Nav Pane when opening a Desktop folder, but have Nav Pane when opening Win Explorer? Like it was in WinXp/Win98/Win95?
When I disable Nav Pane, it disappears for Desktop folders and Windows Explorer.
I think the answer was 'no' for Win7.
I installed Classic Start Menu hoping one of it's features could do it. If it does, I've not been able to enable it. Other than that, Classic Start Menu is a super improvement.
You all take care,

More repliesI need a little help with something that seems simple. I am using Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. I have changed the columns in Details view in a folder. However Windows is not populating those columns, so what am I missing? This holds true on both my network drives and my local drives, so I checked my indexing options and they are set to index my local drives, so I assumed that should have at least worked. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Welcome to Seven Forums JLH1. Try this:

Scroll down the list and make sure the categories you want are checked> OK

the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15–5559. The white LED blinks 4 times then the orange blinks twice.
Sometimes it works, but after the first time it started up it barely ever works.
I tried starting it with the battery, without it, with the cord, and without that.
What’s going on, and how can I fix it?
For Windows 7, is there a list of the 'Details' available in the Windows Explorer folder view called 'Details' which has an explanation for each of them? Most of them are simple but some leave me scratching my head.
The "Details" which are available are those you see when a list of files is in "Details" view (as opposed to "Icons" or "Tiles" views. In "Details" view, depending on which column categories you have enabled, you are shown such things as filesize, file-date, filetype etc. If you then right-click any column header, you can choose to hide or show more information columns.I can't see how any of that can leave you scratching your head as it's no different to previous versions of Windows in that respect.

Like you know how people take videos of games they play and feed it into their PC so it is on there? What do I need... and what kind of stuff is possible? Could I transfer a tape from a VCR? A DVD? Or just games? Give me all the information you can because I know nothing about any of this.
How expensive would this be? I hope not too much... If it is something that is selling software with it, but thats what makes it expensive, tell me the way to get it without the software so it is cheaper. I have plenty of video editing programs and stuff, I just need to get the stuff there.
I believe the name of what I am looking for is a capture cable, that takes whatever is displayed on the screen and saves the video on the computer.

I've been looking at what different cpu's AMD has to offer and I'd be grateful for some clarification on how they "rate" their cpu's.Now, when just the Athlon XP's were introduced, the rating system was to show how they performed when compared to Pentium cpu's. With the introduction of Athlon 64's, does this still hold true, or is the number they give them just a model number and not a reflection of their performance?Would a Athlon XP 3000+ provide the same performance as an Athlon64 3000+?To further muddy things, the Sempron.I know this has been introduced to go head to head with the Celeron D cpu, but how they rate the Sempron, is the rating a reflection of how it would compare to a Celeron cpu only? Or would the Sempron 3100+ outperform the Athlon xp 3000+?I've googled and been on the AMD site but haven't found anything to directly compare one AMD cpu to another with regards to performance.Any advice/info appreciated, dagwoood.
Have you been to the AMD EDGE / cpu support forum / sempron click hereQuite a lot of useful information on sempron's and other cpu's.
4 more replieshow do i get a higher score than 5.9 on my hdd as that the only thing holding back my score from being 7.3? i heard i need a SSD to get it higher is this correct?
You can't improve your hard drive's WEI rating without buying a new better one.
An SSD would be a sure fire way of getting your system rating up but I'm sure there are some high RPM hard drives that can do that too.
To be honest though a WEI of 5.9 will sure as fire run just about any piece of software you want 2 fold.
You have to remember that this is just a number and and will not drag your system performance down too much anyway, the only noticeable difference I would see from having a better WEI scoring HDD/SSD would be boot speed and local file transfer rates.

I'm building a new PC soon and am considering this case here:

I like the look of it and the features sound good for my use.
The question is, this 350w case is only £5 more than the same one with a 300w PSU, the cases are relatively cheap probably 'cause they use a generic PSU, does anyone see a reason why i shouldn't buy this case?
Consider:
* B.U.M.P. your previous thread or list the componets your using, which determines psu requirments. You've been building this PC for over 6 months now; & I'm afraid you haven't learned a thing.
Better to buy a good case w/ good internals & cooling, rather than buy a cheap case that will give you fits.

that is a good gauge for figuring out what is a quality PSU. it lists all of the major ones from best to worst to not-recommended.
unfortunately for you, you'll find that even a tier 2 or 3 power supply, and 3 is pushing the limits of quality, will range from 80 dollars and above.
one of the cheaper ones that i believe is good enough to run most systems, based off of what i'm told and recommended, is the Corsair CMPSU 450VX. it gives a lot of power for the price, and it's very high quality. 80 dollars from newegg.com.
anything below that price is pushing it. because when you start seeing 600watts going for 50 dollars, then you know you've found the low quality pieces of junk.
Been running XP Pro 32 forever.
Installed Windows 7 on a second hard drive with the following core following components.
Asus M3A78-EM motherboard
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+(2x2Ghz.)
4GB. of of DDR2 memory.
I like what I see in Windows 7 so far, and the performance seems just as good as XP, the install was fast and boot up time better.
Had to go to Windows update for 3 drivers, only 1 item did not not have a driver available,
An ancient Pinnacle TV tuner card, PCTV Rave, everything else is working.
I skipped Vista, but Windows 7 has got me interested, just have to get use to the GUI, and a couple other minor things.
My rating is 7.5/10 for Windows 7
XP is still ahead 8/10
Has anyone had a problem getting a Windows Experience Index rating?
I keep trying to get one and it won't work. The progress bar moves about 5% of the way and then stops. I have closed all running programs and let it sit for an hour. Task manager shows WinSAT.exe at 0% CPU usage.
Any ideas?
