Just a heads up about Windows 8 pricing.

Question: Just a heads up about Windows 8 pricing.

Prelude:

From what I can gather there are 4 versions of windows 8:

* Regular - not for sale, only manufacturer pre-installed.

* Pro - For sale in computer supply stores, An upgrade from previous such as W7, Vista, XP.

* Pro - that will only enhance "regular" to Pro.

* RT - only for tablets, notebooks and such devices, manufacturer installed. A reduced version without some Pro features.

* W8 - Enterprise, Commercial, not for sale to the general public, only for corporations and government.

Pricing:

* W8 Pro upgrade. Windows has it on the Internet as a download for $39.99. The offer expires at the end of December 2012.

* W8 Pro upgrade from W7, Vista, XP, for sale in computer stores, Costco, Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA. Costco's price is $66.99. The others are $69.99.

* Windows Pro only for existing Win 8 regular already installed. Thus the regular manufacturer version is upgraded to Pro for $69.99. *( That would be actually a value of $69.99 plus &69.99 - $139.98 ).

The Windows Pro at Staples has on the price tag: "Retail price $199, $130 off. Offer expires February 2013.

So anyone who is contemplation purchasing a Windows Pro should be aware of/about the coming price increases. Looks as though in March 2013 it will cost everyone $199 so far as I can ascertain now.

Apparently installing Win 8 to upgrade Vista and XP will require re-installing all current software presently on the computer whereas a Win 7 will not.

Preferred Solution: Just a heads up about Windows 8 pricing.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an IBM hard disk model IC35L080AVVA07-0. It has jumper settings for 15-heads and 16-heads. This drive came 'bare' (without documentation) so I have no idea why or when to use either of these settings and I can find nothing about it at the IBM site. It came from the factory with settings for 16 heads so, not having anything to tell me different, I left it at that.

The reason I am asking is that the drive was set up and worked fine for several months. Later, I moved it to another machine with a slightly older model main board. It seemed to run fine for about 3- or 4 weeks; but, then I began to notice corrupt file names in Windows Explorer that did not show as corrupt in DOS mode. Last night, I did a massive file copy from one machine on the network to the machine containing the IBM drive in question. This morning, I got up to find the primary partition on the IBM drive was "Invalid Media Type" and the partition type was "Unknown" by FDisk.

Now, I don't know if this is related to the 15-head-16-head settings or not. But, until I have some documentation on this, I will never know for sure.

Good news if its true. Hopefully those prices aren't just promo prices. A $50 upgrade from Vista is extremely cool. It would be pretty hard to accuse Microsoft of gouging at that price.

when vista releases in december (hopefully) it'll only be in its second beta not the full version that could be the reason for the small price... windows home is only 87 bucks on newegg. but i could be wrong it could be the full version. that'd be pretty awsome if vista is really cheap

According to Neowin, Microsoft plans to reveal the prices of Windows 7 in mid June.As you might now Windows 7 is rumoured to be out by October 23rd as per reports from Acer or to be specific in the holiday season.Paul Thurrot says that the date is October 15th.
According to the NDA schedule on Tech ARP, OEMs are already aware of how much it will cost them to install on new systems and retailers have also been informed of how much the boxed editions will cost them to sell.Dell say that they already have the news about the pricing and also add that the pricing is costlier than Vista.
The schedule details give the announcement date as just a few weeks from now in mid-June.Ars technica had previously said about the leaked pricing list but that news was from a unconfirmed source so that turned false. But if you are a student you should be able to get Windows 7 at a discount or even completely for free.

I'm going to have to re-buy my windows licences because I am going to replace 3 PCs primary components; Motherboard, CPU and RAM. The only active component not being replaced is the HDD.

When I talked to Microsoft they said I have to re-buy Windows. The $1300 I spent on licences When Windows 7 was first released is now a dead investment.

It's no wonder that people pirate windows!

When doing research on pricing I came across these sites...

Microsoft - 3x3pk Win7 Ult64B+10x1PK DVDRW - Catalogue | Alphastore

and

MICROSOFT GLC-00894 - 3x3pk Win7 Ult64B+10x1PK DVDRW

Both have the same product code. Now I'm assuming 3 x 3pk only means 3 licences, not nine, since retailers are renowned for splitting 3pk OEI OEM DVD packs and selling off individually.

I've emailed both companies twice now and asked for clarification on number of licences and how many unique software keys I actually get with the purchase. But neither have answered.

Anyone have any ideas why one price can be more than 5 times the other, when neither say upgrade, full or OEM??

Anyone have any recommendations on the cheapest place to buy 3 copies of legit licences with individual keys... I am assuming of course that each machine must have a unique key..

thanks
Tanya

Hi Tanyam,
It is perfectly legal (and possible) to download and burn an .iso of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and burn it to a disc and use it....... IF you use your current product key.

Burn Disc Image - ISO or IMG file

Refer to the above link on how to burn the image to a disc. If you own a file-sharing program such as BitTorrent or uTorrent, you should be able to use it to download an .iso. If you need help finding a good . iso, I'll be glad to help. I can also find you a non torrent download if you wish.

Hope this helps,

Vista made me want to puke. So I took my old 32-bit XP home cd and reinstalled old reliable.

After reading various little snippets of information about W7 I'm getting kind of excited. I'm really tired of not being able to take full advantage of my Q6600, I know I can get a 64-bit version of XP but there really isn't a point.

Anyone know when this W7 will be released and what kind of pricing we'll be looking at?

Answer:[Windows 7] - Release date and pricing?

About a year after the first public beta. So if that comes out next month, your looking at Q4 2009/Q1 2010. I'm sure that Microsoft would like to have it out in time for the holidays if at all possible, unlike Vista.

I must admit that I find it interesting to hear comments like "Vista made me puke." Windows 7 is not going to as big of a jump over Vista as Vista was over XP. Microsoft will no doubt fix the biggies that were unpopular in Vista like UAC, but its not going to be a big shift. Same driver model and the like.

Hi guys,

New to the forum and have searched for some answers on this topic.

I have a small business with 16 computers I need to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. The computers currently have Windows 10 Home. (Side note: Will I have any issues with drivers, etc etc upgrading these computers from Home to Pro???)

Is it worth it to purchase volume licensing vs just buying OEM copies? Also when I go on CDW's site, are the "Open license" the ones I need to purchase? And are these licenses only good for 1 computer or all? (some say one license, others say one user, one is labeled 500+).

Any help is greatly appreciated. I need to get this figured out ASAP.

Answer:Windows 10 Pro Volume licensing (very confusing pricing)

A volume license is restricted to a certain number of instances, but you can move them around as you see fit. Thus, as long as you deactivate the license for Computer A and then activate the license for Computer B, you've effected a license transfer from one machine to the other. Don't buy OEM Licenses: while cheap, they're (a) supposed to be provided by people who sell them with a computer and installing them on some other machine technically violates the license and (b) once installed, the license stays with that machine and cannot be transferred from one PC to another. As for reputable vendors to contact for volume licenses, I've done business with Software Wholesale International (now part of Crayon) for years, and they continue to offer the best prices on MSDN subscriptions and volume licenses I've found anywhere for small-timers like me. You may want to check them out as a point of comparison with CDW (whom I've also done business with).
HTH,
--Ed--

PS: volume licenses can also come as part of a subscription deal through Open Value offerings (Microsoft Open Programs | Microsoft Volume Licensing). These may be a better deal for your business, as long as you don't mind paying them every year for your Windows seats (and other software).

PPS: working with the Microsoft Volume Licensing Center is a major PITA. Look for a vendor who will help you navigate their systems and get your account set up so you can access and use your licenses properly. SWI has videos to get people... Read more

Microsoft today announced Windows 7 retail pricing, upgrade information, launch details, and a preorder deal. The software giant has reduced the price on its most popular retail Windows product, the Home Premium upgrade version, by approximately 10 percent (this varies based on the market). In the US, this means a drop from $130 to $120, a savings of $10. For the Home Premium full version, the price drops from $240 to $200. Those are the only differences when comparing Windows Vista prices to Windows 7 prices after Microsoft made cuts in In February 2008 (compared to the ones announced in September 2006).

The general availability of Windows Server 2008 R2 has brought to the table a variety of complex offerings in terms of pricing and licensing which customers might find difficult to navigate. In this regard, Microsoft has taken the necessary steps in order to ensure that companies looking to leverage the latest iteration of Windows Server for their infrastructures will be able to benefit from an insight into purchase costs as well as the license options available. ?Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Overview? is a guide put together by the company and offered via the Microsoft Download Center.

Hi there
available if you want to test it you can get a download via TECHNET SUBSCRIPTION.

Of course you can't use the technet download in a commercial organisation - but for developers etc who want experience in using etc etc then a technet subscription ~250 - 300 USD is a NO BRAINER IMO.

Also good for HOME users who want to learn about installing and using Servers.

If you look for promo codes you can probably get a discount too on your technet subscription.

Incidentally Students *might* be able to get a free or cheap version of W2008 Server too - same conditions not for commercial use of course.

Note the download from Technet doesn't have an expiry unlike the Free Trial download and you can use several copies.

Cheers

Microsoft Sets Windows 7 Pricing, Upgrade Programs

Want to get Windows 7 on the cheap? Well then, it looks like pre-ordering is the way to go. Then again, the "regular" prices aren?t too bad either, hit the link for all the info.
From Friday through July 11, consumers in the U.S. will be able to buy an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home premium for $49 or Windows 7 Professional for $99. That offer is good for both XP and Windows Vista PCs, regardless of whether someone has been trying out the pre-release version of the operating system. That matches the details in a memo from Best Buy that leaked earlier this month.

When boxed copies of Windows 7 go on sale on October 22, Microsoft plans to charge $119 for Home Premium, $199 for Professional and $219 for Ultimate. The Home Premium upgrade is down $40 from the product's original price, although the Vista product had already gotten a price cut along the way. The Professional and Ultimate versions are priced similar to where Microsoft was with Vista. The upgrade prices apply to those moving from a previous version of Windows to Windows 7, but only those from Windows Vista will be able to upgrade without doing a clean installation of the product.
The full versions of Windows 7--the editions for those without a copy of Windows--will be priced at $199 for Home Premium, $299 for Professional and $319 for Ultimate. The Ultimate and Professional editions are again on par with their Vista counterparts, while Home Premium i... Read more

Microsoft?s free Windows 10 upgrade deal is looking better and better all the time. For if you already own a genuine Windows PC, you could be saving yourself upwards of a huundred to almost two hundred dollars.

Microsoft confirmed Monday that the company will sell Windows 10 at retail for the same price as Windows 8.1: $119 for Windows 10 Home, $199 for Windows 10 Professional, and $99 for a Windows 10 Pro Pack to jump from a licensed copy of Windows 10 Home to the Professional version.

That means, unfortunately, that the price leaked by Newegg's retail site over the weekend for Windows 10 Home was incorrect. NewEgg pegged the price of the Windows 10 Home Edition at $109, and the Professional version at $149. It also claimed that the software would be released on August 31.

On July 29, according to Microsoft, you?ll be able either to download Windows 10 or buy a new Windows 10 PC from retailers. And if you click the ?reservation link? that Microsoft is pushing via its most recent updates to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, you can apparently sign up to preload the software just as soon as it?s ready. Microsoft promises that upgrades will be free for the ?supported lifespan? of the device, although it hasn?t explained what that phrase actually means.

As of press time, NewEgg changed the release date of the software to reflect the July 29 launch date that Microsoft officially announced early Monday morning; the company has not yet announced a revision to its pu... Read more

Microsoft has just released the first Windows 10 build to the Fast ring this week, build 15063, which comes to both PCs and phones. This build comes just a few days after the last build was released for Windows 10 PCs on the Fast ring, which was build 15061, made available last Friday.

We may now be a couple weeks from the RTM version of Windows 10, since it is expected to be released in early April. So, don't expect any new feature for this build, but only improvements and bug fixes.

Here are the fixes for PCs:

We fixed a reliability issue from Build 15061 resulting in Microsoft Edge hanging and becoming completely unresponsive.
We fixed an issue for Insiders where the localized files and registry keys associated with any additional language packs on the system would not be installed after enabling .NET Framework 3.5.
Here are the known issues for PCs:

The upgrade path from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Build 14393) to this Windows 10 Creators Update build is not yet live and will be live tomorrow morning.
You will be unable to download new (additional) language packs on this build. Currently installed language packs will not be impacted. These will go live later this week.
If your PC fails to install this build on reboot with the error 8024a112, reboot manually again. If your PC appears to hang during the reboot, power your PC off and back on and the install will proceed.
Some Insiders have reported seeing this error ?Some updates were cancelled. We?ll kee... Read more

Microsoft has posted a downloadable troubleshooter to temporarily prevent Windows 10 from installing updates that may be causing problems. It works by hiding the update(s) you choose from a list of available updates, pretty much as worked in previous Windows versions. The only thing MS doesn't say is that after you uninstall an update, it takes several minutes for the update to appear in the troubleshooter. The troubleshooter does not install in Windows; it's a standalone app which I saved to my desktop for easy access.

It's at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

I came across this because update KB3132372, a Flash patch MS pushed on 12/29/15, is causing problems with a few apps. I uninstalled it earlier this evening, and it re-installed within two hours.

It's at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

I came across this because update KB3132372, a Flash patch MS pushed on 12/29/15, is causing problems with a few apps. I uninstalled it earlier this evening, and it re-installed within two hours.

Microsoft’s September batch of security patches will include fixes for 13 documented vulnerabilities affecting Windows, Internet Information Services (IIS), and Microsoft Office. According to the company’s advance notification for this month’s Patch Tuesday, there will be a total of 9 bulletins (four rated critical) addressing flaws in all versions of Windows, including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.

The Microsoft Office bulletins will cover security holes in Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003 and Microsoft Office 2007. It is likely these will include fixes for the DLL load hijacking attack vector that affects hundreds of Windows applications.

Seven of the nine bulletins address flaws that could lead to “remote code execution” attacks so it’s important for affected Windows users to pay close attention to this patch batch.

Answer:Patch Tuesday heads-up: 9 bulletins, 13 Windows vulnerabilities

Allow me to give my little sermon now, rather than wait for the Thursday after patch Tuesday.

Set your automatic update to notify and not install. Now don't argue this point, because I am speaking from the experience that I have acquired from helping others. If you receive a large number of updates they will be all installed at the same time. If more than several require a restart, a conflct will develop. Then on Thursday, the posters come and tell me that "The update is jammed and my computer will not boot", etc.
Dont be one of them. Set the update to notify.

I recently purchased a T430U and noticed a pricing error when changing the default Win8 os to Win7. The price should stay the same however it is increasing. The screen shots below are from January 8. "Coincidently" the website is now behaving fine and the price stays the same. After several phone calls and emails they are saying that something else in the configuration must have changed which is NOT the case. So they are refusing to issue the credit. Suggestions? Win 8 Pricing Moderator note: images larger than 50k converted to links per forum rules: Lenovo Community Participation Rules

They seem to be indentical, even though they point to two separate uploaded images. Am I missing something, or was one supposed to be the "before" and one the "after"?

It's only been a few days since Microsoft released Windows 10 build 15002 to PCs in the Fast ring, bringing a huge range of new features. The wait for Windows 10 Mobile users has been much longer - the last official release to the Fast ring was build 14977 over a month ago, although build 14998 was unexpectedly (and unintentionally) released for those devices earlier today.

But today, Microsoft is rolling out Windows 10 Insider Preview build 15007, for both PCs and phones. It brings a range of new features to both sets of devices, including further improvements to the Edge browser, on top of those that arrived with build 15002:

Sharing your tabs (PC): We?ve added the ability to share a set of tabs you?ve set aside. Just click the ?Tabs you?ve set aside? button, and under the ??? menu select the option to ?Share tabs? with many apps installed on your PC.
Import data (PC): We?re making it even easier to bring your data over from another browser when you switch to Microsoft Edge. The new ?Import from another browser? button in Settings allows you to bring your favorites, browsing history, saved passwords, and other data from another browser you have installed, in one simple step.
Running faster (PC): You can now choose to ?Run? a download link without first saving it, and we?ve added a ?Save As? option to the existing ?Save? link.

Windows 10 USB drivers for Intel USB 3.0 chipsets are totally broken and only allow USB 2.0 speeds. I've tested this on three machines that were upgraded from 7/8 to 10 pro with the same behavior.
In the interim, please use the drivers here: http://www.win-raid.com/t834f25-USB-Drivers-original-and-modded-9.html
This is really sloppy work by both MS and Intel, dropping proper support for USB 3.0 in their latest OS/chipsets (thank god for the hacked drivers or we'll be using USB 2.0 speeds on those shiny new win 10 machines).
Posting this under OS again as this is where it rightly belongs.

Answer:HEADS-UP!Windows 10 USB drivers for Intel USB 3.0 chipsets totally broken

Standard motherboard "USB 3" connectors* have USB 3.x pins on one side and USB 2.0 on the other. If a USB 3.x driver is not installed, you're only going to have a working USB 2.0 portion on the connector.

I don't think anyone dropped support for USB 3.0. If there's a problem with recognition after an upgrade, and standard troubleshooting such as removing the device and any previously installed USB drivers, then re-scanning, and trying to grab the update from the MS server on the device properties if that fails, it's just a problem recognizing the device. I'm no Windows 10 fan, but you're being a bit hyperbolic there. It's very possible that a device driver will need to be installed on a new OS, and that's nothing new.

Microsoft has announced plans to ship three security bulletins this month to cover at least four serious vulnerabilities in all supported versions of the Windows operating system.

According to an advance notice from Redmond, one of the bulletins will be rated ?critical? while the rest will carry an ?important? rating. All three bulletins cover issues that could lead to remote code execution attacks, Microsoft said.
Affected software includes the Windows OS, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Groove 2007.

http://www.itbusinessedge.com/cm/bl...leopard-threat-with-hot-deal/?cs=33664&page=1

Windows Vista was a huge advantage for Apple -- since it launched and up until last quarter, Apple was aggressively taking market share from Microsoft. Last quarter, Microsoft responded with a strong marketing campaign and stopped the erosion. Apple got a bit more aggressive in the second quarter and it is not yet clear whether it has started to take share again. However, in looking ahead to the second half of the year, Apple had itself positioned to take a massive amount of market share from Microsoft in the third quarter, due to a combination of aggressive upgrade pricing and actually having its new OS and hardware available in that quarter. In what continues to look like a tennis match, Microsoft has struck back with an aggressive, though short-lived, massively discounted preorder program which, based on recent surveys, may result in the company mitigating Apple's attack and announced initial pricing. I wrote earlier on Apple's move into the enterprise. Let's now go over the pricing program, discounts, upgrade recommendations and a few closing thoughts on Windows 7.

Microsoft Pricing

In every geography, pricing for Windows 7 will generally mirror or be under pricing for Windows Vista. In addition, there will probably be sales specials during the fourth quarter that will be announced close to launch... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 Pricing: Microsoft Responds to Snow Leopard Threat with Hot Deal

It ain't over till the fat lady... errr... ok, bad turn of phrase.

Apple hasn't announced any solid Snow Leopard release date, so do not be surprised if we suddenly see it released pre-Oct 22nd just to stick another thing in Microsoft's back... I sure as hell won't be, I'm expecting it around the time they have the next shindig announcing new iPods, etc... potentially a new Mac mini also among other things... with Snow Leopard released either the same day or right on the heels of those announcements.

Apple is fairly predictable these days. So much for their "Thinking Different" concepts...

Fast Ring Windows Insiders have been treated to yet another new Windows 10 build. The latest release, arriving with build number 14986, is now available for PC. As you'd expect, build 14986 contains an absolute slew of new features, fixes and improvements for Insiders to check out, along with its share on known issues to be aware of.

Build 14987 just began rolling out and it may take some time to show up on your PC, so don't fret if you don't see it right away. In the meantime, you can read through Microsoft's full changelog for the update, which we've included below:

What's New?

Turn off your computer, change volume with voice commands: Being able to control your computer with just your voice is one of the top requests we get with Cortana, so we're excited to say that we've added several new features to Cortana that let you do just that. Now you can shut down your PC just by asking Cortana. You can also restart, lock, or put the system to sleep, and raise and lower your system volume with just your voice. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Cortana loves music: You can now use Cortana to control music playback on more of your favorite music apps (EN-US only). Starting with this build, we've enabled natural language compatibility for iHeartRadio and TuneIn Radio. This will work on both, above the lock screen (PC is locked) as well as below! Question: Ram Pricing ?

Im just wondering why these two sticks of ram are so different
in price. They are both the same except for a difference of 512
megs but the price differs by $150. Im just curious.........

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...144-202&depa=0
kingtson 512MB===$55.01

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProduc...141-429&depa=0
Kingston 1GB===$206

Answer:Ram Pricing ?

First of all, this is computers. The more you have, the more expensive it'll get per increase. The bigger you get, the price increases exponentionally. Like of couse 1gig will not be double the price of 512, cauze then under the same logic i'd go buy 2gb ram for 4x the price of 512. But wait, 256 mb, is cheaper, so why don't i just buy 2 gigs of ram for 8x w/e 256 mb cost?

Anyways, that won't make up for 100% of the cost. I think that the qualitiy of the ram varies. So the 1 gig of ram is higher qulity than the 512 ram.

Question: Pricing up a Job

If you are just starting out and dont know much about pricing a job, how do you get a good figure a client, and you are happy with??

for example...

networking 6 machines in 6 different rooms to a hub then router to allow internet access.
settting up 6 logins and a small file server.

is there anywhere that gives a guide or indication of charging prices for general contract jobs?

Answer:Pricing up a Job

I think pricing depends on alot of things.

1. The Area, where I live I charge $30.00 per hour, people think that's alot around here but if I was in Denver charging the same people would think that was cheap.

2. Experience, when I get a new tech on my staff we don't charge as much on his jobs because it's kind of a given that he is going to have some problems at first. After a month or 2 of doing work we raise him up to the standard rate. I don't feel it's fair to make the customer pay the same rate to have somebody who's new to the business. Either cut the rate or charge them for less time than it actually took.

Networking machines can sometimes be hard, if pulling the cable is going to be a pain in the ass then I usually charge more than if they have say a drop ceiling through the whole building or raised floor.

First I figure out what materials I would need, price them out, walk the cable run's and get a general idea of how much cable I need. If the machines are all the same and an Operating System that I know shouldn't give me much trouble (Windows 2000 and up). Depending on what all they need on the file server. Usually I figure 2 to 5 hours to configure a basic server, get all the hardware, software configured, add users, setup shares. Sure it usually doesn't always take that long but I would rather bid a little high and come in low as opposed to having to go back and charge more...customers really dont' like that.

This is getting crazy. We are less than 6 weeks from D-Day (Oct. 26) and we do not have pricing on a single Windows 8 device. This was not a big deal on past Windows launches as price were expected to stay the same because the products were mostly the same. But with Windows 8 we are expecting one new product category (ARM devices) and two greatly expanded product lines (Hi power Core iX series tablets/convertables and low power Atom/AMD powered tablets/convetables). We are so close to launch date that companies will have had to roll into production mode already for launch devices in order to build up an inventory and get devices shipped to their destination stores. The Best Buys and Amazons and the like will have already placed orders for launch devices, and would have needed to know MSRP to make ordering desicions. So why keep the consumer in the dark? Why not make some announcements and let the marketing machine begin to build up some hype. There are a large number of people that don't follow technology news that that don't even know a new version of Windows is about to launch.

Answer:Can we get some pricing already?

Something to think about:The cool thing about this forum is that someone with a problem may get free advice from many folks. Now, if you don't think of yourself as an expert, but think you may add something to the conversation PLEASE DO! Even if you just ask a question, it may lead someone else to the answer.I'm no expert, and several forum regulars are able to think circles around me on many topics, but i usually find i have some suggestion that helps in some way for some topics. It's like i'm holding one piece of a HUGE collection of puzzles, and someone else has another piece, and someone else has another, and so on. Absolutely *none* of us has all the pieces to every puzzle (anyone who says she does is not being honest!) so don't be afraid to add to any conversation here.OK, i'll get off my soap box, now.

I have a client who is looking for between 50-100 off-lease (used) LCD monitors for export in decent condition (minor scratches on case/base OK but screens in good condition).

Having never shopped for such a large quantity before, I'm curious if anyone has experience on what decent wholesale pricing should be. As of now, the lowest I've found for a bulk (50+) order of 19" screens is about $60 each - not that great a deal since I can buy new-in-box 19" units (entry level HP or Dell) in the $90-$100 per unit range.

There are plenty of recycling/used PC vendors in the area - I'm curious if anyone has any pricing experience or negotiating tips for getting a better deal.

(If I buy this quantity, I will test every monitor, verify the power supply is compatible with 220/240 volt use and get a LARGE cash deposit from the client prior to purchasing. )

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Answer:Used LCD monitor pricing?

All depends of the quality of the screens,if they are budget screens for offices or schools I'd shoot lower than $60,ATM that translates into about £40 each over here which is pretty expensive for junk:-D

I'd half the new price twice, about $100 to $50 then half again for bulk so about $30.Most of these whole sale places pick them up for next to nothing from businesses and schools so you can really barter with them, they will usually still make money whatever they sell them for the $60 is BS they know you will knock them down a sheetload.

As for bartering tell them they are junk:-D Remind the guy about the lifespan of the backlight, criticise their storage.Speak to them in person Don't act like you want to buy them, start at $20,lie and say your shopping around for the cheapest deal but don't tell him the price you want beaten when he asks say you rather not say but you'v had multiple offers cheaper than he just said.Pretend your still deciding whether it will be economical to buy them or not.

"Its not gonna be worth me going this route at that price."

Remember your not out shopping for monitors your out seeing if you should be shopping for monitors The further he thinks you are away from buying the more he will bend.

Most of all be light hearted and not serious, jovial. Its much easier say things and get away with them if you laugh after you've said it,people drop their guard when they are happy and having a good time so a... Read more

Question: Pricing proposals

I have a client that is in need of some upgrades with the current system that they are working with. This client has recently discovered a virus that has created some problems with his programs. His current environment consists of 4 personal computers with internet capabilities on 2 pc's, 1 scanner, 1 laser jet printer, 1 cadjet 2 plotter, and 1 hub for networking, windows 98, and microsoft office 97. I will provide for this client a backup tape unit for offsite storage. Anti-virus software for all computers, personal firewall for small business, windows 2000 for all pc's, and microsoft office 2000 for all pc's internet capabilities for all pc's. When providing this type of service for a client, what would you charge a client and how do you arrive at a fair price for your client. As you can tell I am fairly new at providing services for clients and if I do a decent job for this client it could lead to other opportunities for me.

Answer:Pricing proposals

How long is a piece of string?

You should be thinking in terms of % markup on the hardware and software that you are supplying, and as its a lot you can afford to take less % than if it was just a couple of items.

On labour you need to set your hourly rate, then either go with that and give an estimate of the time to the client, (always over-estimate so that when it takes less time the client is happy) or work it out and give a fixed price to the client for a set number of works/jobs.

Make it clear that the set price is for the works specified, and if they add anything else its extra on top at your hourly rate. Otherwise you can come a cropper, as I have never been to a client site yet where they haven't said "Oh, while you are here, can you just...." which will really upset things on a fixed price contract.

Hope that gives you food for thought.

I am in the process of looking for a paid for OEM for 10 Pro as I want to keep my 7 Pro key and buying one of those is just as expensive according to my local dealer - $209 + p&p which is pretty good.

Now I am also thinking at the same time what sort of mark up these dealers make over what they but the software in for resale as soem EBay sellers for example (not that I would buy from them) are offering the key but no DVD for s little as $120. So in my mind making say even a 25% mark up on what sellers pay Microsoft for what exactly do Microsoft produce their software for??

Answer:Just wondering re pricing

It probably depends upon how many OEM licenses they purchase at one time, but I don't know for sure. It violates Microsoft licensing agreement to use OEM system builders licenses for personal use on computers that you are not building to sell (except for Windows 8.0).

For those awaiting the imminent arrival of AMD's Vishera (aka Piledriver, aka Bulldozer rev.2, aka Bulldozer rev. C0), HotHardware have published pricing via Shopblt.com.

If AMD's strategy is consistant with the previous Bulldozer release, then pricing indicates the parts' relative performance merits in relation to Intel's current mainstream CPU range.
At $US 253, the FX-8350 launches at approximately the same price as its predecessor - FX-8150 MSRP at launch being $245. AMD seem to have noted that the FX-8120 took a sizeable chunk of the 8150's possible sales, being some $40 cheaper but offering comparable performance. AMD aren't being nearly so generous this time around.
Launch is rumoured to be October 18

Hello, I was researching RAM for a build I am planning to buy this Black Friday (Can't wait ) and I noticed that I found some really cheap RAM and I don't know if this is a unreliable pos, or if this is a genuinely good find.

I know that lower CAS latency, higher frequency, and if you want your computer to run cooler, a lower voltage will make for nice ram.

This is the RAM I came across:
Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT4G3D1609DS1S00

For the most part (85%) of the reviews are 5 eggs, and it is $10 off with a promo code. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy these?

Also, I am going to be getting the Sabertooth Z77 motherboard and an i7 3770 and I was curious if anyone could tell me if this RAM is compatible with my planned setup.

Answer:Curious about RAM pricing...

Well depends on what you are going to use for the new build but the other RAM looks ok for what you have now.

Oh meant to mention if you idn't now turn of the defrag you don't need it with the SSD. Plus take a look at this if you already haven't - more speed.

Answer:Alienware Pricing

Are you REALLY certain that Alienware is the best choice for your needs? Lately, we find them to be considerable trouble, both in early failures, and in difficulties getting parts and tech support. Perhaps tech support is better in Australia?

Question: TP61 pricing

I thought computer pricing was supposed to go down!I'm in Canada and priced the configurations shown below several times in the past month. I compared US and Canada pricing on equivalent configurations since the Canadian and US dollar are approximately at par with each other but fully expected to find I'd have to pay more in Canada for an equivalent configuration and was interested in seeing how much more. But, suddenly, prices on both sides of the border have gone UP!Lenovo US ThinkPad T61 15 Widescreenwas $1,551; now $1,663.00Lenovo Canada ThinkPad T61 15 Widescreenwas $1,663; now $1,778.00;(I find it somewhat amusing that the old Canada price is now the new US price -- though I expect that's just a coincidence!)I know that there are "deal codes" for the US site but there is no equivalent in Canada.I was all set to buy a ThinkPad. But once I add a reasonable warranty and the sales taxes the price is simply too much.If anybody has some constructive suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. Here are the details of the configurations in case you are wondering if I have really configured equivalent machines.Lenovo US=========ThinkPad T61 15 Widescreen - 1 Yr Depot Warranty $1,663.00System Processor: Intel® Core? 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz 800MHz 4MBL2)Operating System: Genuine Windows XP ProfessionalOperating System Language: Genuine Windows XP Professional - US EnglishDisplay Panel: 15.4 WSXGA+ TFTSystem graphics: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (128MB)Total memory: 2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667... Question: 4GB memory pricing

The configurator for the W520 shows a delta price of $160 to add 4gb of memory to the base 4gb. The price of additonal memory on the accessory site is $62! P/N 55Y3711 PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 DDR3 SODIMM . What's up with this? Looks like a $100 error in the configured price. Anyone else see this?

Answer:4GB memory pricing

Doubt there is a mistake. It's all marketing and profit. Most people who are not necessarily hardware savvy will pay the extra money (often without knowing the price difference) to get the amount of RAM they want.I ordered my W510 with a base single 4GB module purposely, and added the "accessory" 4GB model in the same order and installed it myself for 8GB total, but with a large savings for installing it myself. I even called to ask Lenovo at the time of order if they would install the extra module during build, but they of course would not ;-)

Question: BT Pricing Policy

I have had line rental from BT on the same number for over 20 years and BT has been my ISP since the days when dial-up was the only option. I have had broadband from them since the maximum speed available was 512kbs. Because this has happened gradually over the years, my broadband (option 2) is being charged as if it were a stand-alone service at £20.50 per month, whereas (ignoring introductory offers) a new customer taking the same services as I have would pay £18 per month for the broadband. I am about to take the issue up with BT, but was wondering whether anyone else had been in the same situation and what the result was.

Answer:BT Pricing Policy

They are open on the phone to haggling, or it seems like it at the time!
Heavy hint that if they cannot do better you will move elsewhere.
The best you can hope for is one of their bargain contracts which must last a year to avoid penalties. I asked for another £3 less per month (nearly a year ago). No they couldn't do that but would give me a £36 discount at the start.
I still feel like someone who has "missed the boat" but I'm not sure quite how.
The service has been good and snag free. If you haven't had a shiney Home Hub yet, you will have one thrown in. "No" I couldn't have another chunk off instead of a second hub. They still sent me another hub anyway!

Hi,

I have seen loads of stories since Microsoft announced the pricing for Windows 7 last week and I've read several stories that seem to conflict with each other. The main conflict seem to be over the "No upgrade in Europe" thing. I currently have a machine running Windows 7 RC that was originally a Vista PC.

Can some explain to me what the options (e.g. what price) will be to upgrade this computer Windows 7 Home Premium once the full version is released in October.

Also, apart from that, will I be able to "in place" upgrade from Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 release? (e.g. upgrade instead of wipe and install???)

Thanks.

Andrew.

Question: Software pricing

Why does the price change when you go to the web site to download? An example is DSL 3.9 which is listed as $15 and the web site says $24.95.

Answer:Software pricing

Retailers can change their prices to what they like, providing they cover the buy-in costs and make profit on it.

The RRP (recommended retail price) is just a guideline for retailers to follow.

Question: Align Heads??

Hi,My name is Mary. I have need having a hard time with my hard drive lately. It does not recognize Cd's in the drive, and it will not write anything to the disc's. I ran the PC Doctor today. It came back with the following errors. CD 523-5w CD523-6w CD523.7w and DW529-1. The last one could be RW-529-1, I may have written it down wrong. My drive is a Lightscribe DVD+-writer/CD-writer. I am using XP. I have a HP a1118x. My drive is HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B. I did a search on the internet and found out the codes mean I have the light heads are out of alignment. Can someone please help? I did a live chat with HP ad they told me I would have to take it to a service center. I really do not want to do that if I can fix it myself. If there is any other info that I may have forgotten, please let me know. I am not even able to open the drive at this point to remove the disc from the testing that I did. Thanks in advance for the help!Mary

Answer:Align Heads??

Welcome Mary...Optical drives are not made as well as they used to be...that being said it would be silly to have a shop repair the unit you have. Here is a link to current pricing on dual-layer drives and some are LightScribe...around 40 Bucks. And you could replace it yourself or have a friend do it in about 10 minutes.Best of Luck.

But I don?t think it?s fair when it came with SSD1 (M.2) fault to start with.Any input will be appreciated.Happy New YearSepy

Answer:Heads up on ThinkPad P70

I don't know what is the exact return policy but since you have the on-site warranty it is time to use it. I understand it is frustrating.

why do i have to confuse the matter.
i have an acer aspire m1640 which last wk my motherboard blew.
it had win vista built in but the motherboards for these have a reputation of going wrong so i bought a gigabyte insted and win7.
now i have a problem how to remove vista which the motherboards trying to run. and also how to install win7 through the bios system.
i would like a little bit of help as im new to this

Answer:my heads going to go bang

There are no operating systems built in to motherboards in the manner you describe here.

They have to be installed on drives which the motherboard accesses through it's BIOS. The BIOS has to be set up correctly.

Normally, in order to install an operating system, you place the Disc ( DVD ) containing the system in your DVD drive and allow it to boot.

If you don't know anything at all about this, then it is better to get somebody else to help you.

This is a heads up for anyone playing games that run Gameguard, such as Maplestory Mabinogi or Gunbound.
For anyone who read my thread a few days ago, my computer was crashing during gameplay of a few games, Maplestory most notably. The probably was diagnosed as and agreed apon by the responses as a Graphics Card overheat error, which concerned me as it hasn't happened before. I may now have found the problem, to which I would like to inform my fellow gamers.

The problem started when my girlfriend's brand new computer started having the same issue last night out of the blue. I decided to scour the web for possible problems with the game. I found a thread somewhere describing an error with gameguard BSODing when there was a critical error in the program. Doing more homework, I found out that gameguard's error handler is tied right into the kernal process of windows and activated a BSOD instead of crashing just the game. Wondering what could have possibly done that, I decided to check gameguard's website WHEN I remembered: I have other gameguard games.

I uninstalled them all(including maplestory) did a system search for gameguard anything and manually deleted it. Ran CCleaner to get rid of leftover files(probably was unneccesary). Redownloaded Maplestory and ran the program. It's been running(and still is) error free for the last hour and a half(twice as long as I've made it in the last 3 weeks). I was gonna try it on my girlfriend's compute... Read more

This morning while checking my email, in my spam folder, I found a message from a company advertising "Remote Computer Repair for $24.99 only." I went to the site (out of curiosity) and it LOOKS legit. The company is Fixtelnet (website: www.fixtelnet.com email: [email protected]). Has anyone in Geeks forum HEARD of this company or used their services? Something just doesn't look koshder to me about them, maybe because it appears that the email I received was sent to NUMEROUS other AOL email addresses, which would lead one to believe that this company had done a little "email harvesting" and sent out the email to people trying to drum up business. To be honest, I doubt a legitimate company would do something like that. Of course I could be wrong. What does the forum think?
