Short Battery Life Sinks First Windows 8 Notebooks

Question: Short Battery Life Sinks First Windows 8 Notebooks

Short Battery Life Sinks First Windows 8 Notebooks

Confusing dual-mode operating system, no Start button, counterintuitive swipe gestures? None of these things spells doom for Windows 8. What will kill Microsoft's newest operating system is the abysmal battery life of the systems on which it's supposed to perform the best.

For all of Windows 8's strengths, its one major weakness might be something no one saw coming; significantly worse battery life than the previous generation of PCs.

Leading up to the launch of Windows 8, we saw progressively longer endurance on the two most-portable categories of notebooks. As of September, the average ultraportable (a notebook with a screen size of 11 to 13 inches and weighing less than 4 pounds) lasted 6 hours and 52 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test (Web surfing via Wi-Fi, screen at 40% brightness). The average thin-and-light (12 to 14 inches, less than 6 pounds) was right behind, at 6 hours and 40 minutes.
However, when we started adding Windows 8 notebooks to the mix, those averages receded faster than Steve Ballmer?s hairline. By November, the ultraportable average dropped by half an hour, and the average thin-and-light decreased by 10 minutes. A number of challenges face OEMs and Microsoft when it comes to the adoption of Windows 8, from design to pricing. But solving all those issues will be moot until they fix the most basic requirement for any laptop ? good battery life. www.laptopmag.com

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After upgrading to windows 8, I've noticed that my E530 laptop battery life has decreased by alot. It used to be able to run for 2-3 hours while browsing the internet, but now, it only lasts approximately 1-2 hours. This may be because I have no power manager installed ( can't find the windows 8 version ). Anyone know how I can possibly fix this?

Answer:Thinkpad E530 short battery life after Windows 8 upgrade

Hi, Hardy

I would agree that the lack of a power manager being installed is likely the root cause of your now-shorter battery life. I was able to locate this document that can assist you with finding the driver for Lenovo Power Manager. Select "Power management" from the first drop down menu and select "Windows 8" from the second.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi All,

I am having a problem with my Acer aspire s3 ultrabook (i7 2637 4GB ram running windows 7 home premium 64 bit).

The fan is on all the time, really loud and noisy, and the laptop is usually heating up too rapidly, and the battery life is less than 1 hour on power saving mode!! I don't know how it became this way, but I think that I once downloaded the windows 8 preview, installed it, but nothing happened, and I could not detect it on the control panel or in my hard-drive, it just disappeared, and my laptop has not been well eversince. I am not sure If I want to restore it or if I have a restoration point before the problem, but I have important software I do not want to lose. Is there any solution for that?

Thanks

Answer:laptop heating, fan loud, battery life short in windows 7

dalhoomist,
Welcome to SF. Have you ever opened the bottom up to change ram or your HDD? I would open it up and see how much that exposes the guts and especially the fan which I would take a very close look at and then clean it with air and a damp q-tip. Air flow is critical and these fans get dirty and even clumps of dust can break off and slow if not block the flow of air.

I've just bought a new replacement high capacity 8 cell battery (40Y7003, FRU 42T4632) for my X60 (1706-5DU) and find I'm getting about half the expected battery life. Even with the wireless radio turned off, no peripherals plugged in, a bare minimum set of services, no applications running (not even anti-virus for the test), and the Power Manager set for Maximum Battery Life with the screen brightness at it's lowest, I read just over 4 hours of battery life. Compared with the 7-8 hours I got for regular usewith my old battery when it was new, this is a real concern.I ran a reset through the battery maintenence part of Power Manager, thinking that might take care of the problem, but no luck When I look at the battery information in Power Manager, I notice a couple of things that seem strange to me:Full charge capacity: 78.67 Wh    >    Design capacity: 74.88WhVoltage has kept between a range of 15.00 V and 16.450 V    >    Design voltage 14.40 V Other info:First use was two days ago (16 Sept)--I took it from the sealed box and charged it about 6 hours before use--the battery light had been green for an hour or two before I turned the machine on.Manufacture date is  2009-07-22 Any help in finding the source of the low performance (whether the battery itself, the computer, or the ThinkVantage software) would, of course, be appreciated. The 9 cell battery for my T510 constantly causes my PC to hibernate immediately without warning when it reaches the battery custom threshold set in the Power manager (to start charging at 60% ). Not sure if this is a bug with the new Power manager 3.31.  I did not have this problem with the 3.30 power manager.   As a result, my 9 cell battery is good for 1.5 hours browsing the internet before it goes into hibernation (thinking that there is no charge left when it has 60% charge left). Restarting the PC shows the battery capacity at 6%!   This is a 1 month old T510.  Any idea, any one? CL70

I have recently aquired an L20 and am amazed at the incredibily short battery life of between 60 and 90 minutes which means nearly always being connected to the mains and thereby defeating the laptop's portability. Is it possible to upgrade to a longer life battery?

Answer:Satellite L20 - Short Battery Life

Hello

Well, t would be very interesting to now how old is this battery?
As far as I know you can charge the battery about 500 times. Then the battery loose performance. Furthermore you should always remove the battery from the unit if the AC adapter is plugged. If the battery is plugged and you use the AC adapter too so this procedure has a bad influence to the battery performance.

Hi forumi have had my X220 for many years, and i have always been very happy with it.  Not using it so much right now, but it is still important to me.After i updated to Windows 10, i noticed that the battery life was getting shorter - and the battery is even drained when the X220 is not used.  My 6 and 9 cell batteries did the same, so i thought that it was because they are old (5-6 years i guess).  Therefore i bought a new 6 cell battery ...... but unfortunately it behave in exactly the same way.  When fully charged and used for max 20 minuttes pr. day, after 3 days the battery is 'flat'.Does anyone have any idea what to do?Best regardsHenrik - Denmark

When I got my Spectre about 6 mo ago I go 8-10 hrs on a charge when doing word processing and e-mail.  However that recently dropped to less than 4 hrs.  After spending several hours with HP Support, we could find nothing obviously wrong with the machine.  A look at the Task Manager CPU useage revealed nothing extraordinary and the HP Battery check indicated the battery was "ok".  In preparing to send the machine back to HP, I decided to first try to reimage it, i.e. wipe the disk and reload the operating system.  HP makes this easy to do.  Once the new image was installed I methodically  loaded each of my major applications one-by-one and retested the battery life after each install.  I now get 8-10 hrs of battery life. During this process I did not update any of the drivers.  This suggests that one of the recent driver upgrades is the culprit to my battery problem so I'm now much more cautious in accepting these.  I always do a restore point before proceeding and test the battery life afterwards. Testing the battery life can be done in several ways.  The key is consistency.  The method I use is to edit the power settings so that the screen stays on and the machine remains awake.  I then just let it sit for a while.  I typically see a loss of 10% of battery power per hour.  Prior to the reimage I saw 25-30% reduction per hour.

I got my x200 about a month ago, and was very excited about it! I am having trouble with the battery life of my 4-cell though. The first battery I got lasted only about an hour with about 35-40% brightness, and an internew browser. I called lenovo, and they sent me a replacement battery. I charged it overnight before using (unlike the first one), but I still only get about an hour and fifteen minutes with the same brightness. I have installed all the updates, and it is still giving me such a short battery life. Most of the reviews I've seen have had 2 hours and 30 minutes on their x200s, so I am wondering, could there be something else wrong with my laptop? I really need a longer batter life (probably should have gotten a 6-cell if the actually battery life is only half as advertised) and any help on this would be really appreciated. I don't want to call again and ask for a replacement because I don't think that is the problem at this point.  Thanks for all your help.

Answer:Short battery life of a 4-cell on an x200

Though not the same system as I have an X-301 I noticed that Lenovo's Gadgets running on the Windows Desktop can really drive up continual processor usage.  I set the settings for the Windows Gadget bar to not display on boot-up.  This made a huge difference.   If you are not running gadgets consider using Windows Task Manager and monitor the processes to see what's using up the power. Screen brightness is the major consumer so if you can, lower this setting.  Plus make sure you have updates the power drivers and use energy star setting if you can. Best!Mark

My Yoga 2 11 bought had been getting good battery life (5-6 hours) but now (in an instant) it's draining very fast (1-2 hours MAX on a full charge) and it's unusually hot underneath. It's always been used on a clean, hard surface. Help???

Answer:Yoga 2 11 Running hot with short battery life

Hi David_EMG  ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

It would help if you can generate a battery report ( ac charger unplugged).
How is the battery health if you hover the cursor on the battery icon below?

Battery is a consumable part and depletes its resources in time and heat is one of the factors that can affect battery life. Try running hardware diagnostics along side with this and this test for comparison.

Check the battery status LED indicator (page29) if it goes to the changes from amber blinking to solid white on full charge .  Calibration either using the energy manager via battery gauge reset can also help. Manually you can allow the battery to completely drain and wait for 1-2 hours and then charge it full.

Update us how things go.

This is comparatively very short battery life as my brother has a Samsung which is an older piece then mine but still can run on the battery and one my friend has a Dell XPS which is even older but has a working battery,
any comments?

Answer:Short Battery Life Inspiron 15R 5521

Hi Techie_28,
Thanks for posting.
I apologize that your battery isn't lasting as long as you expected it to.  Batteries normally last between a year and 18 months under normal use.  Dell provides a 1 year battery warranty which is described below:
Batteries for portable systems and mobile devices are not covered under the same terms as the system warranty. Agents should see the procedure below for determining the warranty of the battery in question.

The standard warranty for a portable computer and/or mobile device FRU battery is 1-year from the date of initial shipment or 90 days from when the battery was last replaced.
Out of Warranty batteries that are replaced using the OWR process described below have a 1 year warranty from the date of service.
Accidental Damage (Complete Care) for portable batteries is covered for the period of the battery warranty if the customer has purchased an Accidental Damage (Complete Care) contract.
Dell Accidental Damage Service does not cover any damage to or defect in the battery that is cosmetic only or otherwise does not affect functionality. Dell is not obligated to repair reasonable wear and tear on the battery and other superficial items, such as scratches and dents that do not materially impair use of the battery.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I bought my new laptop and put it to charge straight away over night without using it.
Today, when I switched it on, within 15-20 minutes, the battery life went down to 89%.

My question is, is this normal battery life?

I have already adjust power savings, brightness etc so as not to waste the battery life.
This is my first laptop, so can somebody please advise me?

Thanks!

Answer:New Satellite L850-142 - battery life very short!

10% for 20 minutes is for me OK. I presume you will be able to use your notebook up to 2 hours on battery power supply. Of course it depends on power settings and way how do you use it.

Don?t worry and just continue to test your new piece of hardware.

Hello.  I purchased an Ideapad P400 about a year ago.  I have noticed over the course of a few months that the batter life has become increasingly shorter.  It can now only hold a charge for about 2 hours.  Is this normal?  Do I have any options for increasing the battery life?  The battery is enclosed in the unit, thus I don't know that I can easily replace it.  Help?

Answer:Ideapad P400 Short Battery Life

hi nethersprings,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Just to check, along with the short battery life, do you also notice that the battery is discharging too fast? The advertised battery life of the P400 is 5hrs (unit is idle and on power saver mode - battery is charged at 100% until the computer goes to sleep). Depending on the process that you're running, 2hrs would seem to be normal if you play movies around that 2hrs.

To check the battery, can you try and run following:
1. Download and install BatteryCare and post the detailed info on the battery.
   - Sample info

2. Open an elevated Command Prompt (press the Windows key? +X and choose Command Prompt (Admin))
   - on the command prompt box, type powercfg -energy
   - once It generates the energy-report.html file, move this to your desktop and double click it. It will help if you can post a screenshot of the report or upload it (eg. Dropbox) so we can check if there's an app or a driver running on the background that's eating up power and making the battery drain much faster.

Hello. My 4th gen ipod's battery is quite short (4-5 hrs) after a full charge. I did all of the recommendations to extend battery life and charge from the wall mount. Also I noticed that when I synch my ipod to my computer, the back gets quite hot and the screen starts to fade and flicker. It's only after I disconnect the ipod to let it cool does the screen comes back. Is there a primary harddrive issue or is the motherboard messed up. I also replaced the battery already thinking the original one was dying. But that didn't seem to help any.

I've already re-formatted the iPod and restored it last night. Haven't tested it yet. Would replacing the harddrive fix this problem. I suspect the harddrive is constantly spinning when it should be resting between accesses.

I recently purchased an Asus N56V Series laptop. The laptop has impressive specs, including an i7 Core and a Nvidia GT 635M graphics adaptor, so I can understand it having a below average battery life. However, I am only getting 1 to 2 hours of battery life on it, even when I am not running processor and graphic intensive programs. Product review indicate that will battery life for this laptop is below average, the battery should still last 4 hours under normal conditions.

Is there any reason why my battery life is so limited? Has anyone else had similar problems with this model of laptop?

Thanks for the help.

Hi! I purchased my laptop around 3 to 4 months ago via my school. Initially, the laptop was able to live up to its claims of a "long battery life" but within 2 months, the battery life had decreased from 10 hours to 2-3 hours. Moreover, the laptop seems to be very laggy, despite the fact that the majority of my files are stored in Dropbox and I rarely have anything more than a few google chrome tabs open (and occasionally a microsoft word document open). Are there ways to solve this? Should I purchase a new battery?

Hi

I?m not sure if the BIOS update would help you but if the new BIOS is available for you notebook series, then it?s worth to update it.

But you should also check the Win 7 power management settings.
Please check this Toshiba HowTo:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=41

It?s about vista but Vista power management is very similar to Win 7.

There you should change the options to ?more battery friendly?.

Hi All

I have problem that my C50t-A battery life is very short (less than two hours) and usually use laptop for reading, so how to check the actual battery life and if there is problem in my battery. The application of health monitor shows me the battery health is good, but this actually not correct since I need to charge my laptop each two hours or may be less and this very noising since sometimes not easy to get charging in any place. Is there any programm or application to check my laptop battery?

Answer:Toshiba Satellite C50t-A - battery life is very short

Download a program called HWMonitor from cpuid.com to view the wear level of the battery.

Lithium batteries only last about 3-4 years before needing replacement. They lose about 20%-30% capacity every year.

Hello forum, I bought a like-new T440 last week (500 GB+16 GB, 8 GB RAM, i5) & my experience so far has not been good at all. I am a student on budget & I got it to replace my failing 5-yr old atom powered netbook. I don't really care about other widely reported problems with this model like the button-less keypad. But the 1600x900 TN screen is so bad when compared to my old netbook's screen that I can't believe how Lenovo got away by putting this screen in an ultrabook.  There are other issues that have been bugging me and I need some help: 1. The brightness keys stop working after a while (for example, after waking the laptop from hibernation). They will not work until I restart the system again. Is there any way to resolve this issue? 2. The Access connections also stops working after a while and shows that I am not connected to the net even when I am online. How can I fix this problem? Or is it safe to turn off access connections & just rely on Windows network and sharing center? 3. The battery life is abysmal. With minimum brightness and mainly word-processing work and occasional youtube video streaming, I am getting less than 4 hrs. Is this normal? I use the "High energy savings option" & lenovo turbo boost diable option while on battery. I have a 3cell + 3 cell (48 Wh total). Just bought the new 4k 13 inch spectre x360. So far it has been great, except that I am getting nowhere near the advertised battery life. I have already researched these forums, and read the tips located here - http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c00596784 - and here (translated from Spanish to English) - http://h30467.www3.hp.com/t5/Consejos-de-Expertos-para-notebooks/Consejos-de-mantenimiento-de-Bater%... - and nothing has helped.  In just 2 hours of up time with the screen set to 50% or less, I reached 20% battery remaining. This was only with web browsing and some office processses such as email and Microsoft Word. Do I have a bad battery, or is the battery life overall just not as good (or even close to) advertised? The laptop is less than 30 days old.

Hi guys,

I have a Satellite M105 and I think Im not getting good battery life out of it. I've had the machine for 1 month and I can get barely 1:50 mins on battery power, with minimum brightness and wifi on, just surfing the web and listening to mp3s. Is this the expected performance for this machine type?

It has a 1.8 Core Duo, 1 Gb RAM, 80 gb HD, x1300 ATI 14'' Any clues? I use the "long life" power saver scheme from Toshiba application. My battery wasn't affected by Toshiba voluntary exchange action.

Thanks

Answer:Satellite M105-SP381: short battery life time - about 1:50 mins

HI Juan,

Different parts of you notebook will use power at higher or lower rates. Generally any component with a mechanical action (your hard drive, optical drive, Floppy drive etc) will use somewhat more power than the CPU, RAM etc.

The effect of this is to drain the battery faster if the hard drive or optical drive is in use. So typically you would expect to get longer battery life if you were using an application such as Word or Excel where there is minimal hard drive activity unless you are constantly saving or loading documents.

In your case the playing of MP3 files will need to constantly load data from the hard drive (albeit cached to reduce the number of accesses) while you internet browsing is constantly writing pages to your Temporary Internet folder (as well as accessing your anti-virus database). All this hard drive activity will mean that the hard drive is never allowed to spin down and so will need to use battery power.

As long as you follow the usual recommendations for optimising your battery (allow it to discharge fully from time to time) I think the time you are actually getting is reasonable for the type of activity you are performing.

regards,

Today I restored my Satellite A200 to factory settings.
This is about the 4th time I've done this in the last 2 years.

Now my battery life is screwed up.

100% charged with about 10 minutes remaining (image: http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/3548/100g.png)

85% charged with 8 minutes remaining (image: http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/723/46880270.png)

What's going on?

I'm afraid if I restore to factory settings again to 'fix' the problem it will only make it worse and end up being 2 minutes remaining at fully charged.

Answer:Satellite A200 short battery life time - it discharges very quickly

Hi

Looks like the battery is dead?
In such case you have to buy a new one?

I can use my old battery for about 2min? it?s fully charged but after 2min if usage it?s empty?
But I use my notebook like a desktop PC? it?s connected always to the AC adaptor so I don?t need a new battery?

Cheers

My new X1 is great for crunching through data but the power consumption seems very high at idle or when I am doing simple tasks. I have BIOS version 1.27 (released 21/Oct/2011) and Power Manager 3.62 I have used Power Manager to set Power Use to "High energy savings". However, the power used is always >20W and usually around 25-27W. This results in excessive heat (so the fan goes at 4500rpm all the time) and the battery is lasting less than 1 hour if I give a Powerpoint presentation (no movies). Also, the Power Manager shows GPU at 100% all of the time - is this normal or might it be a cause of increased power requirements? I have tried all the solutions to fan noise in this thread:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x1-fan-Noise/td-p/469001 I have tried setting all power settings to maximise battery life in Windows 7 and then also in Power Manager but to no avail. Please help! What are the ormal power requirements and GPU% at idle?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:X1 - high power consumption (>20W), GPU 100% all the time, short battery life, loud fan-noise

Check Task Manager to see if there's anything running that is using CPU.As far as I know, there aren't any tools for determining which program is using the integrated GPU. You may try ending services one at a time.

I purchased a Flex 2-14 on Saturday (April 4th 2015). It was a display model in the shop, meaning that I was able to pick it up for about $380. Other than a few (semi-deep) scratches, it was otherwise fine until I set it up. First of all, the ESC key seems to be almost permanently stuck, which is strange, since there doesn't seem to be anything holding or sticking it down. This is the only key that appears to be stuck and one that I would usually use quite often.Secondly, a strange static/buzzing noise began to erupt from the system quite quickly (within one hour of use).In the lower left corner, there appears to be a light shining through, which is quite annoying in almost any screen (especially dark ones). Especially now that it has been noticed.Lastly, the battery decreases by 1% within 2 minutes while browsing, and otherwise once every 3 minutes if I have absolutely nothing running, causing the battery to last no longer than 2 - 3 hours on power saver mode. The system is currently running on power saver mode, with the backlight dimmed to it's lowest. I have turned off bluetooth and all unnecessary background programmes, yet it hasn't helped much. I suppose my main question is whether my warranty will be able to help this? I've read similar complaints about the system and I doubt that this is something that can be fixed, unless I blatantly get my money back. It definitely wouldn't have been worth full-price. The only pro that it has when compared to my old A... Read more

Hi, I have had my T430 since August of 2012 at the start of college. I am currently running windows 8.1 pro and I recently just noticed my battery life issues and after installing lenovo settings I discovered that my battery's capacity is at 27% of the original capacity. The battery life is really bad, e.g. it says 15 minutes remaining at 25% on POWER SAVER mode.  I have google this and it said to "reset my battery" but unfortunately 8.1 Lenovo power manager doesn't have that feature.  I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what to do?  Will I just have to get a new battery?

Answer:Lenovo T430 Battery Life 1+ hour on life saver

you would have to have a pre-Windows 8 OS to gain that crucial battery reset function. This is one reason why i dislike running Win 8 on ThinkPad.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Does this battery care function really help save the batteries life? It has two choices I can select one is 50% and one is 80%. It said that if I will be using AC power mostly then set it to 50% and if I use the battery the most then set it to 80%. I have been using my notebook at home mostly so I use the AC power. Or is it best to just have that feature off and let it charge 100% when the computer needs to? I don't think my computer will overcharge since todays computers won't do that.

Answer:Battery care for notebooks

If you are running it on AC 24/7, take the battery out. It could stress out your battery.

Preface... (and yes, this is one of my infamous "Megaposts" and this one might be in several parts, so, bear with me and get edjumicated...

I found that link about this "new" power configuration diagnostic in Windows 7 and posted it in the other thread, but as it'll get buried in the muck soon enough, and considering just how vital this specific tool could turn out to be in terms of maximizing the potential battery life/run-time of laptops and notebooks (and Tablet PCs too) that will use Windows, I figured this specific topic is very deserving of its own thread, so here it is.

What I'm hoping this thread will be about is related to a diagnostic tool that, until recently, has been relatively unknown (and I admit I just discovered info about it last week myself, so I'm cobbling together a bunch of information from a variety of sources, several being Microsoft and blogs from MSDN folk, and some Windows 7 developers also, and putting it in this one post/thread.

Hopefully there will be some intelligent discussion as time goes by as the more I do research on this the more I realize it could very well be one of the coolest things - and gain one of the most vital aspects - about Windows 7.

So let's get this thing started... who knows, maybe this'll get stickied like some other stuff I've written about... if people deem it valuable, by all means, tell the Admins/Mods and point people to it as needed.

I know this is an advertised benefit of Windows 7, but now I can testify first-hand to the better battery life. I bought a laptop with Vista on it, and upgraded it to 7 today. I charged the battery before installing, and unplugged it soon after it started installing.

I haven't plugged it in yet. I have been using it for about 2.5 hours now, and the battery is at 73%.

Granted, it is a very good battery, but if this had been Vista, it would be at about 20% by now.

Windows 7 is a great OS, isn't it?

Answer:Windows 7 and battery life

Hi Jonathan,

I think most Members would agree that Windows 7 wins hands down over Vista. I think that it is true that Vista should have never been marketed, in so many ways it was not ready. Windows 7, is basically Vista under the hood with additional features and benefits that should have been claimed by Vista. Your battery experience, for one, security, aero, driver availablity to mention just a few. Enjoy your new computer, Jonathan, and keep busy on the keyboard, helping us at the Forum.

I have a Acer Aspire V5 laptop. When I was running Win 8.1, the battery life wasn't great, but lasted about 2 1/2 - 3 hours.
Now that I upgraded to Windows 10, the last time I turned it on the battery meter said 52 %. Two minutes later, it was dead.
I just turned it on after charging it, and the meter read 98%, 1 hr 50 min remaining. I haven't touched it yet, and five minutes later the battery's down to 90 %, although it says that there's 3 hr 5 min remaining. When I do any work on it, the battery goes down drastically. Does this have anything to do with Windows 10?

Hi folks, Had a quick search but can't find discussion of this. How are people finding the battery life since the upgrade? I'm finding that it's even worse than it was before - and it's always been pretty terrible. I reckon i'm getting about 3 hours on average.  Does anyone have any tips as to how I can monitor what's using up the battery? Ideally a bit like battery monitor apps on Android. I've also noticed a general performance degredation - Chrome becomes all choppy and slow. Not sure what's going on there but I'm guessing the two things are linked if the CPU is under a heavy load. Cheers Alex

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro battery life under Windows 10

My battery life is about the same as 8.1 (6 to 6.5 hrs). I use a program called BatteryBar that will monitor your usage and gives pretty accurate predictions of when you battery will run down. It doesn't track specific programs however. Also, keep an eye on tasks running in the background using task manager while you think it should be idle. You can minimize the task manager to the icon tray to help with this. I also run the displlay at 2048x1152 resolution (@150% scaling)  which makes apps like chrome scroll a little smoother (perhaps due to less data being displayed). Not sure if that helps battery life or not. There a lots of sites you can google to track down specific issues with battery life.

I, like many others, had Windows 10 installed automatically when I wasn't home. I'm not necessarily opposed to this except that it has OBLITERATED my battery life. As an ultrabook user, I primarily own my Lenovo T431s because it can last me days at a time, or at least one day of heavy usage (8+ hours). However, I noticed that since Windows 10 was introduced my usage time is not nearly the same. Just listening to music will result in 1-2 hours at best, even with dim settings. I have to count the minutes every time I take my laptop off the charger.
I've read that MS is working on optimizing performance, but this is beyond optimization -- something must be actively draining the machine. Any thoughts?

Answer:Windows 10 Destroyed my Battery Life

Hello oobio

Welcome to tenForums!

To investigate your battery usage please have a look at the following tutorial and work through the steps:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3...dows-10-a.html

Then you should also run the power efficiency report:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5...dows-10-a.html

Looking through these reports will help you identify at what times in the day the battery was drained the most, hopefully you can relate it to what you were doing. You may also find there are a number of settings you can tweak to improve battery performance based on the analysis.

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello All, This will be my first post. I bought an L540(with 9-cell) and installed Ubuntu 14.10 so its well supported. The only problem I have is wifi (rectified with usb dongle till better driver is written). Although battery is not a real problem, I'm curios about how many hours windows folks get from their L540(with 9-cell). My current setup with linux is when I pull the plug, I drop the cpu scaling to about 800Mhz-1.6ghz, and it varies base on load from there. I can get about 8-9hrs from this. Again, how much hours are windows folks are getting from their L540(with 9-cell). Extra Info: I also have the i7-4702MQ cpu which would like have factor in the draining.

Answer:extend battery life after windows 10 upgrade

Bring up the old Power Options and check to see if anything is set to use more power than you'd expect, especially the processor. For best battery life it should be set to slow down when not in use.

Hi all, A few months ago I installed Windows 8.1 on my T400 (Type 6475) and ever since have experienced abysmal battery life. I have a 9 cell battery in good condition that gave me at least 5 hours of moderate usage when I was running Windows 7 on this machine. Now I'm lucky to get an hour running Windows 8.1 which just isn't really viable. I've checked the battery on my backup T61 running Windows 7 and still achive perfectly acceptable lifespan with that  - so the battery's not the problem. This is my second clean reinstall of Windows 8.1. I've checked all of my drivers are up to date and are Windows 8.1 versions where they exist. My T400 doesn't have switchable graphics so I don't think it's that causing the issue. Bluetooth is off. I've got Power Manager 6.32 installed and working flawlessly. All settings are as they were when I was running Windows 7 (optimised for battery life when off of AC). Before I give up on Windows 8.1 and return to Windows 7 is there anything else I've missed? Is there any way I can check what's using the battery? I'm not a massive tech-head so be gentle if possible... Thanks in advance!

Answer:Sub 1 hour battery life (9 cell) on Windows 8.1

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are getting a poor battery backup in your Lenovo ThinkPad T400 after upgrading to Windows 8.1.

May I know which power plan you are using in your system?
What Lenovo software dependency package is installed?
Have you updated all the Lenovo resources (firmware, BIOS, drivers, software)?

Refer this document and see if it helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I just installed windows 7 on a laptop (around a year and a half old) which with windows vista got around an hour and a half, which was perfect for me (about a lecture's worth of battery), the battery life dropped to about half an hour and the indicator was telling me that there was something wrong with the battery, giving a 'consider replacing the battery' message.

I wonder if it is a genuine problem, or just a software issue (MS deny any problems, but tbh I'm not so sure). I haven't tried anything else, like a linux distro or something, but I wondered if something like that would show up any problems if they existed?

Answer:Windows 7 install battery life indicator

Have you tried adjusting the power settings? Make sure they are not set for performance?

Hi, I have a Xiaomi MI4 running Windows 10 Mobile ( 10586.164 build ). But I noticed that my phone has a poor battery life. Battery percent decreases by 1% every 15 min if I keep the screen on . Is it a problem on my phone or is it common . Please tell me because I am really nervous because my phone has a non removable battery . Any help would be really appreciated . Thanks in advance .

Answer:Windows 10 Mobile Poor Battery Life

are you sure that its 1% per 15 min? thats equivalent to 25 hours of screen-on time. not even my phone with 4000 mah batery can pull that one.lol. if you meant 10% then that is equal to 2.5 hrs of SoT which is really poor.

Hi, Lenovo U310 - i5 - Windows 8 A week ago I upgraded from W7 to W8.In its W7 period batterylife was quite according to expectations - 5 hours with connected external drive, USB printer/scanner, second 22" screen - but since I switched to W8 batterylife barely reached 3 hours. Can anybody explain this and can I expect another firmware update where these W8 issues will be solved? Thanks in advance Grtz,Jim

Greetings,
Somebody please help me! I just upgraded my laptop from windows 8.1 to windows 10 last tuesday. My laptop is Asus X555LB-XX198H(i75500U,8GB RAM,2GM VRAM, 1TB HDD). When my battery life is 10% my pc slow down dramatically & when I checked the computer frequency in the task manager it is in 0.48GHz it's not going up or down either. I don't know if it is the battery saver of the win10 problem or not. I already tried changing my battery power from balanced to high performance but it doesn't help. In the 10% battery life of my laptop my mouse cursor hardly move and the files and this laptop seems to move at slow motion. Please help me solve this problem.

Here pic of evidence.

Hello everybody,
i just wanted to see if anyone else had similar results to this. it seems crazy, i know but my dell mini 10v gets better battery life on full back light.

I even timed it.

Back light full- 6 hrs 27 mins
Back light minimum- 4 hrs 32 mins
i don't know what to think of this, its kinda weird, like my post about how the full blast eye candy win 7 aero theme makes my net book run faster than any other theme.

All input is appreciated!

Ever since I installed windows 10 on my surface pro 3 the batter life dropped from 5-6 hrs 1 - 2 hrs I did a clean install 3 times but this doesn't help. The tackpad has an issue too. I turned off the allow right click but it doesn't work.t I tried going back to windows 8.1, but they some how block user to download apps from store I always get an error "this app wasn't installed" I tried all possible solutions but no luck. The onenote app for windows 10 sucks too I hate windows 10 :(
Note: I always put on battery saver even on 100% charge.
And the Cortana is disabled too

Answer:Windows 10 sucks my battery life, how can I stop this?

Try taking it to a Microsoft store, fully charged. Turn it on and show them the battery drop. If it's only lasting 1-2 hours, let's use 2 hours as a conservative number, then it's dropping 0.83% per minute. Just run something normal for the tech guy for 5 mins, and show him it's dropping nearly 5%. If they want you to hard reset it - then offer to perform the reset right there in the store (plug into their bar with your adapter). It only takes 30-60 mins to do so. Then show how that does NOT solve the problem.
Then ask for a replacement SP3 (they now come preloaded with Windows 10). Hopefully you have Microsoft Complete. :-)
BTW - my SP3 upgraded to 10 and has been great so far. I can run it nearly all day on battery. I usually have about 40% left after 6 hours.

Hi, I have a Z580 ideapad (i3), since I upgraded my computer with windows 8 pro, the battery life is about 2 hours only:  Power saver mode + brightness 50% + Nvidia card is off (instead of + than 4h  with Win 7). And since that time, the fan is always on and the fan control button is not working. All the driver are up to date, i have the last "lenovo battery manager" installed. Do you know if a fix or a bios update is available for this computer?  Thanks in advance! JC

Answer:Z580 with windows 8: very poor battery life

Hi sika95Actually the lenovo battery manager of windows 8 is bugged and doesn't allow some features to work. This is being discussed herehttp://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/Z570-Lenovo-Energy-Management-for-Windows-8...The temporary fix is to use the windows 7 lenovo power manager. I installed Windows 8 on my Dell XPS M1530 (It's pretty old; about 5 years) and ever since the battery life on this thing has plummeted. It was never amazing, but I have the extended battery and would get at least an hour to two hours of light web usage before it died. Now, it lasts 20 minutes, tops. Why has Windows 8 killed my battery performance?

Answer:Windows 8 KILLED laptop battery life

What did you have installed on the laptop before Windows 8.

Sounds like it may be a driver issue with the battery.

I've tried updating drivers, some were unnecessary, and reducing to pwer saver mode. Also, as I am new to nvidia switching graphics, should i keep my unit plugged to enjoy full graphics power during game play or will an nvidia setting switch do? I have updated my nokia lumia 625 to the latest version of windows. I have now a battery life of only a few hours when I used to charge my phone only every 3 days. I still use my phone the same way and I was wondering what could cause that change... Any help welcome

Answer:post windows update battery life

Updates sometimes trigger battery life issues. Sometimes they can be fixed by something as simple as a reboot or a soft reset (power off + volume down until the phone restarts). Sometimes it takes something more drastic, like a hard reset. If you haven't tried the simple fixes, do those first.

I am getting extremely poor battery life after I recently upgraded my operating system from windows 7 to windows 8.  I am getting atmost 3.5 hours now.  What is even more strange is that at about 30-45% battery it immediately drops to 6% and I get a warning that my battery is at a critical level.  I have updated the BIOS but I am still getting this issue.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:W530 bad battery life after upgrading to windows 8

Update all of your drivers using System Update. Use the NVIDIA Control Panel to make sure the discrete GPU isn't active when you don't need it to be.Also run a battery reset overnight to recalibrate the battery gauge.

Hi everyone, I've been doing some "googling" in regards to the battery life when updating to Windows 8.1.  I find that that battery life after updating to Windows 8.1 has been gimped.  However, after restoring back to Windows 8, my battery does just fine. However, after several windows updates in early January, my battery life has declined again and I finally gave up and installed Windows 8.1 again a few days ago.  Again, I get the same result.  60% battery with hardrive saver mode and power saving mode on and I can barely last an hour. Before that (In December) when I ran Windows 8, 60% battery can last me 2.5 hours no problem WITHOUT having to turn on hardrive saver (but I did turn on my performance settings to "Balanced").  I'm just wondering if anyone else having this issue?  I see no one else posting this.As for drivers, as soon as I updated to windows 8.1, I downloaded all the available drivers that were on the Lenovo website and I did my Windows Updates.

Hi all,Just made the jump to W10 and first thing I noticed is I have double the battery drain during idel. Not good.I've been working through process I can kill/disable and cleared out Skype, Search etc. and it was still a battery killer so now I've killed all of the Intel processes. Is this bad? I don't see any change in performance or heating, but I'm back to the old W8 idle drain of 5000 - 6000 which is 8+ hours of idle with screen at 50%.Is this safe does anybody know? I never killed the Intel stuff under W8.Otherwise I really like W10 but if the battery is this bad and I need those processes for safe running I'll revert to W8.

HI community,I had a bad experience with the original Lenovo battery in my 300 N100 notebook. It lasted just one year and 10 days and Lenovo refused to replace it because the computer was ten days beyond warranty.Therefor I want to optimize battery life and therefor only charge the battery when it is really necessary. I had a fairly good battery tool from Lenovo for my former Thinkpad, where I could set thresholds for start and stop charging in percent.Does somebody know a good battery utility for Lenovo 3000 N100 notebooks?Say it should be possible to set charge thresholds, e.g. start charging below 30% and stop charging above 80%.So I could leave the battery inside when it is connected to the power net and the battery is not "worked" in this case.Best regardsAxel

Have a 6 month old T500 which I love.  Always had good battery life (can't remember the duration, but never had an issue with battery life). Earlier this week, I did the Windows 7 Upgrade (machine originally came with Windows Vista OS).  After doing the upgrade, I've noticed a substantial decrease in battery life (now lasts for about 2 hours max). Have reinstalled ThinkVantage Power Manager and Toolbox applications, but that hasn't helped.  Also did power meter reset, but that doesn't seemed to have helped. Has anyone else experienced this?  Any suggestions out there?

Appreciate if people could start to post their respective battery lifes with basic info on the typical battery life, OS, battery configuration, Power profile and screen brightness they are using.  Like to see if Visa or Windows 7 is working better  Battery Life: 4.5 hoursOS: Windows 7 64 bitBattery Config: 6 cell plus slim 3 cell dvd batteryPower profile: balancedScreen Brightness:  max

Answer:X301 Battery Life Comparison between Vista and Windows 7.

you are getting 4.5 hours from 9 cells? that's terrible. it was for that reason i downgraded to xp. actually your numbers match my experience under vista. i thought it was joke when i first booted up the machine and found the 3 cell battery fully charged but only got 90 minutes from it. i won't even say what i think of lenovo's claim of 'up to 3.45 hours' from the 3 cell battery. anyway, it looks like windows 7 is just as bad as vista. under xp with wireless on, bluetooth off, my numbers look like this for 6 cells: Battery Life: 5 hoursOS: xp proBattery Config: 3 cell main + 3 cell bayPower profile: balancedScreen Brightness: -4 i actually just got the 6 cell battery yesterday after owning the machine for almost a year now. i'll post my results for the full 9 cells later, but my initial experience would lead me to believe it is going to be somewhere near 7.5 hours. Message Edited by redwood01 on 06-12-2009 09:15 AM

When I had my native windows 7 setup..My battery life was amazing. 7 hrs easily.  With 9 cell battery. But ever since I upgraded to windows 10...my battery life has dwindled to 3hrs. And the cpu is always running hot. I guess lenovo optimized the t430 for windows 7/8.  Which makes sense.  Anybody else experiencing the same thing on their machine??  On a side note...the t430 is my favorite thinkpad of all time.  It has excellent battery life, lots of ports, msata capability, backlit keys, the last thinkpad with 4 tactile mouse buttons for trackpad and pointing stick. Only thing I iwsh it had was 1080p resolution for the 14inch model. But 1600x900 is lovely. Every thinkpad that came out after seems to have cut corners to be more like an ultra book. sigh..

The Engineering Windows 7 blog mentioned about a new feature of Windows 7. It is capable of telling you that how much life is remaining in your laptop?s battery. Now, there is no need to use any other 3rd party useless software to do so. It will also suggest you when to replace for a new battery.
Windows 7 makes use of a feature of modern laptop batteries which have circuitry and firmware that can report to Windows the overall health of the battery. This is reported in absolute terms as Watt-hours (W-hr) power capacity. Windows 7 then does a simple calculation to determine a percentage of degradation from the original design capacity. In Windows 7 we set a threshold of 60% degradation (that is the battery is performing at 40% of its designed capacity) and in reading this Windows 7 reports the status to you. At this point, for example, a battery that originally delivered 5 hours of charge now delivers, on average, approximately 2 hours of charge. The Windows 7 the notification is a battery meter icon and notification with a message ?Consider replacing your battery?. This notification is new to Windows 7 and not available in Windows Vista or Windows XP.

Answer:Windows 7 Notifies users about there Laptop’s battery life

It seems that after upgrading to Windows 7, many Windows 7 users used to get a warning message about needing to replace their laptop batteries, inspite of having new batteries.

On Thursday, an Intel spokesman confirmed that the company is working to patch a minor bug that will reduce the battery life of some Windows 10 machines by less than 10 percent.
The good news is that, once fixed, Intel expects the battery life of a Windows 10 PC to be on par with a Windows 8 system, the Intel spokesman said.
With the Windows 10 launch just days away on July 29, Intel, Microsoft, app developers, and hardware makers are working to finalize drivers and fix bugs. Microsoft, for example, issued an update for Intel’s HD Graphics integrated GPU on Thursday for its Surface line—along with a firmware update that failed to update for many people.
In some sense, both Intel and Microsoft are on an intercept course, with Microsoft’s Windows 10 scheduled to hit the market shortly before Intel is expected to begin shipping its next-generation Skylake chips. The combination of new drivers, new software, and new hardware usually means a fertile ground for bugs, which all parties are busy patching, Intel among them.

Since installing Windows 10 my lap top battery drains very fast and sometimes goes from 30/40 % to shut down in minutes

Answer:Why is my battery life draining so fast with Windows 10 ( what can be done to correct this issue)?

Originally Posted by RonKunda Since installing Windows 10 my lap top battery drains very fast and sometimes goes from 30/40 % to shut down in minutes go to settings and check under system > battery > apps or programs that can run in background and disable those not needed
also check under task manager what is enabled at startup and disable unnecessary programs
check which apps are syncing always and disable those not needed
reduce syncing times such that the app checks fewer times
switch off wifi/cellular when not needed
check your brightness levels, are they more than enough?
check battery setting, is it high performance or normal or battery saver
Also, allow apps to update while on charge as there could be many apps still updating after doing the windows 10 upgrade
