Is RAM cleared after a warm reboot?

Question: Is RAM cleared after a warm reboot?

A warm reboot restarts a computer without loss of power to the motherboard. If it's a forced reboot (not sure this is the right way to call it), that is: a reboot produced by a kernel panic, BSOD or by pressing the reset button, what happens to memory?.

During a warm reboot (for example the reboot produced by a BSD, kernel panic or pressing the reset button): is the RAM emptied then refilled again?. I say because, since the motherboard isn't powered off in any moment, does the RAM keep data?. I heard that sometimes it's necessary to actually do a cold reboot to clear memory after a warm boot.

Preferred Solution: Is RAM cleared after a warm reboot?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Is RAM cleared after a warm reboot?

BOOT never clears ram - - while hibernate and shutdown can be so configured.
This is a security exposure if/only if the intruder has physical access to the machine, strips the chips from the box and proceeds to examine the content.

Consider what you know of the difference between HD Quick Format and a Low Level format.

Quick format only writes the free and allocated lists and gives up, assuming the actual sectors are present from the initial Low Level
A Low Level fmt, writes every block in the partition with a sector number, rereads it to verify and if bad, places that sector on the bad list.
Boot does as little memory management as possible - - akin to the hd quick fmt.

Your concern that leftover information in memory contaminates the boot process implies that memory IS being read without ever being written first - - Not during boot!

Just to complete this saga, there is a software bug known as Use After Free, where

a program allocates a block of memory for dynamic use,

saves the pointer to it,
uses it for awhile, usuallin in subroutines

and then gives it back but,
forgets to zero the pointer to it, and being non-zero,then attempts to reuse that same block again. Frequently that block is in-use elsewhere.

Use After Free is nasty to find and the consequences are indeterminable - - corruption of data and/or program failure are typical.

Question: Warm Reboot??

Hi,
I remember a functionality in Vista/XP where you could hold the SHIFT button for a warm reboot which effectively avoided having to go through BIOS POST.
I have tried this in Windows 7 however no luck.
Has this been removed? if so that suck cause i have a RAID controller which takes a long time to go through all of its tests/init.

Anyone?

Answer:Warm Reboot??

Are you sure the RAID test is part of POST? your computer must go through POST when it turns on. Windows 7 wouldn't have an effect on this, as it is initiated after the BIOS does its thing.
Have a look through your BIOS settings and see if anything has changed, look for 'quick POST' or something to do with RAID.
If the tests aren't part of POST, and are part of windows init, then I am not sure how to help.

for some inexplicable reason..my cpu usage spiked and stayed consistently at 25% tonight.. I identified the offending process as 'system' under windows processes and ran a malware scan and virus scan..clean across the board. I'm rather confused..as all I have open is vlc media player, skype, yahoo and chrome, not really doing anything that could be remotely considered cpu intensive. did one reboot that made it go away and then scanned my system...clean as stated above.

what I was doing at the time was chatting with a friend(on skype) and listening to transformers revenge of the fallen(score), and I had just unpaused the music..wasnt expecting the audio to stutter, which is when I pulled task manager up and noted the unusual cpu usage.

not really sure where to put this..so its under general.

Sometimes my machine has a problem that requires a cold boot. Memory is not completely cleared with a warm reboot.

My question is: If I hold down the reset button for a few seconds, will memory be completely cleared? If so, how many seconds should I hold down the reset button?

The reason I ask is that my machine has some SCSI drives that take a minute or two to get up to speed from a cold boot.

Thanks for your answer.

Answer:Warm vs Cold reboot

As long as power is being fed to the memory chips the memory will remain there. You have to do a cold boot (cut off the power) in order to completely clear DRAM.

My notebook hangs on warm reboot only. Cold reboot works normally.Anyone had a similar issue?Any ideas what could be the reason for this?

Answer:Laptop Hangs on warm reboot

At what point does it hang, during shutdown or during restart? It could be you have a lot of crap loading in the background at startup, but it seems it would also hang or boot very slowly on a cold boot too. We need a more detailed description & it might help to post the make/model of your laptop.

has anyone ever heard of a warm reboot causing damage to a server's hardware? like a once a day reboot?

i know cold reboots can cause damage over time to hardware(would you mind explaining how though?). Some servers have been experiencing problems and im curious if the warm reboots they are doing could be the issue.

Answer:warm reboot causing damage?

Soft reboot
A soft reboot (also known as a warm reboot) is restarting a computer under software control, without removing power or (directly) triggering a reset line. It usually, though not always, refers to an orderly shutdown and restarting of the machine.
The Control-Alt-Delete key combination on the original IBM PC was designed to allow a soft reboot for a quicker and more convenient restart than powering the computer completely down then back up.[citation needed]
This kind of reboot will not usually reset the hard disks, so that they have time to update their write cache to permanent storage. Hard disks will also keep their configuration (like C/H/S adjustments, HPA, DCO, internal passwords...) over these reboots.
The Linux kernel has optional support for the kexec system call, which transfers execution to a new kernel and skips hardware or firmware reboot. The entire process is done independent of the system firmware. Note that the kernel being executed does not have to be a Linux kernel.

Last year, I replaced my secondary hard drive (WD 120GB) with a newer 200GB WD drive. Ever since that time, I've found that while the bios has no trouble recognizing the 2nd HD after a cold boot, it always fails to recognize it (garbage shows up in the HD description during POST) after a warm boot. I always have to power off the computer for a few seconds in order for the drive to be round correctly. I've heard of drives that take a long time to spin up and thus only work after a warm boot, but I've never heard of this. Any thoughts?

Hello I have some questions to ask

1) I have recently done a clean installation but due to updates and drivers I had to do 9 warm reboots and I'm worried if this could damage.

2)Basically I had to do 3 clean installations(1 in each day) and I'm worried if this could damage the laptop and 3 previous within 2 months because of installing drivers in correct order so my question is could this damage the laptop.

Laptop is quite new

Answer:Can doing 9 restarts(warm reboot) + 3 clean installations(1 each day)?

Welcome to Seven Forum!

1. No it won't, new installs often require many reboots.

2. Doing many install is not harmful either. But this begs the question, Why? A new machine shouldn't need so much in so short a time. did you damage it or install some crapware that borked it? some download site are getting nasty with crappy bundles.

This is an intermittent problem occurring only on warm reboots. My screen displays nothing, and the tower sounds a repeating beep tone...one long beep, one short beep; the short beep is a lower tone than the long beep, so it sounds like an old British ambulance.  I have to power down completely, then power up and everything works fine.

Does anyone else have this issue? On a cold boot I get the "Loading Windows" screen within about 5 seconds of powering on.  However, when doing a warm boot after a restart, it pauses for as much as 20 seconds before the "Loading Windows"screen. Cinders.

Hello,

After installation of Windows Vista Business 64 bit, I noted the following stop errors. I can get into Windows and logon on a cold boot but if I restart the pc then I run into the stop error. I have run chkdsk/f already. I have tried startup recovery which did not correct anything.

I did do a webscan using driveragents.com and updated most of the drivers. This did not resolve the error.

The system is a Dell vostro 1500 - laptop

Here is the exact error: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF980006079C0, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

Thanks in advance,

Hi, one of our customers has problem with T420. He uses external hardware USB VPN Crypto device which is USB powered. The device is connected to the Allways-On USB port (yellow) on T420. The only relevant BIOS option (AlwaysOnUSB) is set to "Enabled". He loggs into Windows 7 and performs VPN device authentication via device utility. Then the notebook is restarted (warm boot) because user would like to connect do domain (restart is performed to gain and apply various Computer related Group Policy settings). During the reboot the power to the USB port is temporary suspended for a second  and VPN device looses power, reboots, and loses connection (to establish connection it requires authentication....).  The customer previously used various Dell notebook models and Lenovo ThinkPad T410, where there was no such issue, the USB port was always powered, also during the warm boot phase.  Current work around is to have additional power adapter for VPN device which is cumbersome for most users.  Is it possible to somehow enable USB port to be powered all the time during the warm boot? A BIOS mod? Best regards,         Blaz

Hello,

The basics (FW/BIOS and HW make) for this post are contained in:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...p-1080977.html

I made dual-boot HP PROBook 450 G3 using ONLY UEFI settings in 64 UEFI BIOS (legacy OSes excluded). I installed two of them: WIN10 64 PRO and WIN8.1 64 PRO.

While passing through BIOS it nicely ends within WIN bootloader showing me two entries: WIN10 and WIN8.1.

While using the same entry from before, it nicely ends up in OS. But while switching from one to another OS, it ALWAYS passes via one more BIOS warm restart/reboot.

The question here: why it does that?

Thank you,

Hi there all, I wanted to throw this out into the knowledgebase. While doing some backup imaging  via linux live cd's on the Lenovo m72e small form factor pc's.... we started getting network /failed connectivity issues on reboot. At first, I thought it was cabling... replaced.  Still having the problem on reboot so I then looked at the back office cabling. Swapped out cat cables.  Intermittently came up but then would fall off on reboot.  when my second imaged computer had the same problem on reboot; I thought it was my switch.  Swapped out to another backup switch I had around.Problem persists.  BY THIS TIME, I realize it's something with the PC/network cards.  Despite shutdown and reboot attempts, this problem persists.... BAD NETWORK CARD? Anyways, it seems that with the SSD and new i5-3570k cpu's; even on shutdown and reboot; the network cards weren't being initialized in some way?? At least, that's my best guess.  Upon reboot, it would not pick up a new ip address/resolve whatever the problem was.  I think this is a bios/firmware issue. The solution is to physically disconnect the power cord and press the power button a few times.  This drains out the capacitors in the power supply and kills whatever data that is lingering in the motherboard between warm resets and quick shutdown.restart cycles.  Also, even when I shut down, I would only wait 5-10 seconds before restarting.... ... All of a sudden (of course), I started getting "delayed write failed" messages on the drive that I use for all my disk to disk backups. Some of the messages included "$MFT".

I couldn't chkdsk the drive. I could open the drive in a window and see the top-level directories, but each directory had 0 files or folders content. Which I knew was bad.

Finally I rebooted the system and ran chkdsk. That ran fine. Now the drive seems perfectly normal. So what happened? Should I be replacing this drive, or moving the contents to another drive and then doing a low-level format?

Thanks.

I was trying to clear space from a small hard drive "C:" and put my folders and documents into my 1.7 TB hard drive "D:". When doing so, it asked me to delete the documents/folders/bytes because they couldn't be recycled. Figuring that meant it wouldn't be deleted from the PC altogether, I clicked confirm, and now I can't access my videos, pictures, documents, music (I never use this folder), and downloads folders. I can't even re-download software such as Steam because I can't locate a space for said software. I can't even download the SysInfo utility software because there's no folders to locate it to.

Answer:I think I cleared my PC

It asked you to delete the folders but you didn't think it meant it would delete them? Yes, it absolutely meant it would delete them. Putting them in the recycle bin is also deleting them but with a safety net.

Depending on how much you deleted, you my just have to right click and create a new folder with the proper name, ie. Documents, Music, Pictures. If you still have problems then see this article; https://scottiestech.info/2014/11/11/repair-missing-user-folders-in-windows-7/

Then if you want to move those folders to another drive you need to move their location properly using this method: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/win...l-data-folders-in-windows-vista-the-easy-way/

Hi guys.

I have a Pentium 4 running at 3 GHz. The case has the factory CPU fan on it, as well as two additional cooling fans. I was living in a small apartment with no A/C a few weeks ago, and it was always UNGODLY hot in there. I've since moved, and the room the computer is kept in is likewise always REALLY hot. The new place has central A/C. There are 3 dogs and 4 cats living in here -- I can't keep the door open to the room (I'm allergic, they knock things over, etc.)

WHAT can I do to cool down? It's, on average, 10 degrees warmer in here than outside! Okay, yea, I know I can turn it off, and I've started doing that at night, but ... the problem reins during the day, and especially in the evening. I work on my computer constantly.

Help one sweaty computer nerd.

Question: Warm Up?

Whenever i am away from my computer for a while like an hour or two, and come back it seems to take a while to "warm up". the first thing i do is start playing music (media monkey), then usually start opera. First it takes a while before any noise, then the music jumpy for a few seconds, then it's good. and it takes longer to open opera, than if i were to close it then open it back up. It's not a problem, it just seems weird. I have process explorer, and no graphs spike until opera actually opens. Is it just taking a while to turn off background processes like system idle process?

Answer:Warm Up?

This will depend on your power saving options that are set in your system's BIOS and within Windows. Once components have been powered down/set to "inactive" - it'll take some time to re-initialize them in order to get them back up and running properly.

Has this always happened, or is it just recently that it's started? There's other things that can cause this (such as a misbehaving program that doesn't work well with the power saving stuff), so it'll take some troubleshooting to isolate it.

Question: Is this too warm?

How warm should the 8800GTS 640mb be? I just installed it, and at idle it's at 61c, but my 6600GT was 56c when idle. Is this normal?

I have two 120mm fans, one in the back and one in the front. I can only feel a slight breeze coming from the video card's heatsink on the back of the case.

How many PCIE cords should I have plugged in? The instructions had a picture with two, but the instructions are probably sent with all the 8xxx series cards. Besides, I could only find one on the video card.

Answer:Is this too warm?

For that card considering ambient temps, it is normal. Those 8800's run hot compared to previous generation Nvidia cards.

Your PCIE cords are fine. That card only need power from one. The Nvidia Forceware software would adjust anyway if it didn’t receive enough power from the power supply.

Question: CPU Getting Warm

When I leave my computer I lock my account (win+L), and sometimes go to bed without turning it off. I have noticed on a few occasions now that when I arrive back at my pc, the CPU fan's are whirring louder than normal. The temps had been at 60c, when normally they are at 40c. After signing in, I check task manager, and there's nothing there that using the CPU, and after a few minutes the temps drop and life is good again.

What could this be? Does anyone had any good ideas to track whatever it is down? I doubt it's malware because I'm 'web-wise', but I'll run a scan anyway. I feel that Windows is doing something and hiding it from me.

Answer:CPU Getting Warm

There are lots of scheduled tasks that run in the background and start when the PC is detected to be idle. Once activity resumes on the PC these background tasks often pause and wait for the next idle period. Some examples include indexing, disk defragmentation, disk clean up, etc.

Open Task Scheduler and look down the list of scheduled Microsoft Windows tasks, you will see there are hundreds of them and most of the time you will not even notice them.

Another thing to do is go through the following tutorial and see if there are some tips that you can use to optimize your PC. Look at item 23 for the automatic maintenance settings.

EDIT: I installed that program just now to see my temps and I think it might not be accurate because my CPU temps are a hell of a lot lower than when I had XP on my PC (or W7 runs cooler... yay windows 7!) They used to always be 40's to 50's and now they are like this:

For some reason today I turned on my computer and all my quick addresses(Internet Explorer) are gone from the drop down menu. I still have everything in the history folder. I didn't clear/delete anything. What happened? Are they lost?

Answer:History got cleared??

That isn't a good way to store your favorite sites. Use the favorites, that's what it's there for. Those do get overwritten and deleted if yout history settings have been reached.

First of all - WONDERFUL site, I'm glad I found it. My husband got a PSW.Generic6.AEY trojan & his online gaming account was stolen. I have gone thru MANY of your threads & I "think" I've cleaned his PC up. Can someone take a look & see if I need to clean anything else off this machine? Thanks in advance!!!

I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit SP1 and use Adobe Photoshop CS5.1, and have done for a long time without problems. All my software is fully updated.
In the last two weeks I've encountered a problem where images won't display in Photoshop if I've closed it and done something else for a couple of hours or so. The images show in the Open Recent list in Photoshop as though they have been opened but do not appear on screen. When this happens I cannot access the Color Settings in Photoshop either.
The only way I have found to resolve it is to log off then log back in. After that everything is OK with Photoshop again.
I have tried everything I can, made sure my graphics card driver is up to date, tried older graphics drivers. Removed then re-installed Photoshop. Then I completely re-installed Windows and started from fresh.
I have posted on the Adobe forums but nothing anyone has suggested has worked, though two other people have reported they have started to get the same issue.
So my question is, can someone tell me what is getting cleared, changed, at log off that they think could be connected to this.
I use CCleaner to clean up my temp files etc on a daily basis; but using it when I encounter this problem doesn't fix it.

Answer:What Gets Cleared At Log Off & Re-Boot?

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

In all honesty, I think your problem lies with Adobe Photoshop, and not Windows.

I'm currently using Adobe Design Premium CS5 and after an intensive period of photo editing the application freezes for a few minutes.

I've tried getting answers from Adobe and all they can suggest is upgrading to version CS5.5, which I refuse to do.

All I can suggest is you try and find an answer through Adobe's forums or raise a case with Adobe directly.

Dear Fabulous Beepingcomputer.com Saviours, My parents called me to ask me to investigate why their (and I admit it, very old) computer was extremely slow. I duly investigated, and it turned out they had six viruses! They deny all knowledge of how they obtained them, but I know for a fact they will click on anything with a button. Anyway, I ran the usual Spybot S&D, Rootkill and Malware Bytes scans and got rid of most of them, sweeping up the last remnants with a safe mode scan and everything appeared fine. However the computer (and internet) is running extremely slow again, almost as if something is throttling the internet after about 10 minutes and the firewall keeps being turned off.  I'm concerned that I may have missed something during the virus removal process, as I seriously doubt my parents use the computer enough to incur the wrath of the ISP and its specified usage limits!  I have updated Java, Firefox, Adobe etc as far as I can, and have eliminated several unnecessary automatic start-ups (Apple Tech etc) cleared the cache and cookies in Firefox, but to no avail. Any help will be gratefully received ! Hi,

A few days ago, my spyware told me I had a trojan could allow someone unlimited access to my system whenever I was on-line. The spyware deleted (and sorry I can't remember the name of it) I ran my anti-virus and downloaded a couple other spyware software to run as well. The thing that has me concerned is my modem light is blinking even when I am not on the internet and even when I hit SHUTDOWN on my firewall.

If someone could take a look at my Hijack log, I would really appreciate it. I am afraid someone might still have access to my system.

Thanks!

First, thanks to all of you who take the time and effort to help people disinfect their systems. It is a generous and noble thing to be doing.

I believe that my computer still is infected with something(s). I believe that the initial infection came on or about 12/24/2008. Before coming to this site, I downloaded and ran combofix. I now know this was not a good thing. My computer still runs, but there are numerous times (almost always) when it runs much slower than it did before I got infected. Before running combofix, superantispyware and some other bits of software, I was getting random pop-ups sending me to a variety of websites. Now, my computer is just slow, and the sysinternals rootkit revealer comes up with numerous lines of stuff that were not there before I got infected (output available on request if useful). The other odd symptom, is that when I am trying to install the latest update from Microsoft (the perm copy of the package installer hxxp://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB898461), it fails everytime and I end up with corruption to my filesystem that requires chkdsk to do some work. Anyway, from here down is the log that the instructions say to post.

Answer:Infection May Not Yet be Cleared

Hello Ray,

I'm not seeing any malware in the log. Let's get an online scan to search for remnants that may be lying around.

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:Close any open programs
Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

3. Click Run at the Security prompt. The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database. Please be patient as this can take several minutes.Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
Click View scan report at the bottom.

Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Whenever i type my password on the logon screen.
I always need to get my token for 2 factor authentication.
This is not really a problem however if it takes me about 30 seconds to get my token then my password field gets cleared and i have to type it again.
Now i don't mind passwords being cleared as a security measure but i would like to set the timeout to 60 seconds.
I've been testing this on different windows 8/8.1 pc's and they all have the same "problem" without anyone on google seeming to know the answer.

Here's a simple test case so you know what i'm talking about:
- Go to the login screen
- Enter some text in the password field
- Wait 30 seconds
- The password field get cleared

I have two LCD monitors one is a HPvs17e and another is a Hanns-G the both work nicely but lately it seems that they are getting very hot the HP is a bit older then the Hanns-G.

Hours on the HPvs17e is 58191 Hours total.

I can not find the hours on the Hanns-G

But i had that one for a year i really don't think it is normal for a LCD monitor too get so hot that it makes you sweet.

Answer:LCD Monitors getting warm

it makes you sweet.Click to expand...

I like sweets. And with Halloween approaching, there's a bunch here!

What is your ambient (room) temperature? Are you entering Winter or Summer where you live? I have 2 22" Samsungs and I can certainly feel heat coming off them when they have been on for some time.

There are two reasons electronics heat above "normal" levels: lack of ventilation and drawing too much current due to some component failure. So, are your monitors stuffed in a cabinet or under a hutch where heat is being trapped? Fortunately, most monitors don't have fans to pull in a bunch of heat trapping dust. Note too that monitors with internal power supplies tend to get warmer than those with external AC to DC transformers.

It is not likely both started drawing too much current due to component failure at the same time - and unless these monitors are inside a cabinet, I think this might be a menopause thing! :-D

If you have them connected to a "good" UPS with AVR (and if not, why not?) that has an LCD readout of the load of the attached devices, you can monitor the demand with the monitors off, then one at a time, power them on and see how much the demand increases. Then check the specs for your monitors and see how they compare. Mine draw about 40 extra watts each when switched from off (or standby actually) to on. And according the specs, they should draw 42.

If your UPS does not have an LCD readout, most come wit... Read more

I was excited when I read that the core 2 duo's run much cooler than P4's, considering I had heat problems with my P4 2.8.

SO... I got my e6400 core 2, built the system last w/e with the stock cooler / thermal pad and was idling around 51c - no good. Reinstalled the h/s a few times and didn't drop below 50. Decided to order the Artcic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Got it today, installed fine w/ the pre-applied stuff (at least from what I could tell with the new pushpin system) and now I'm idling about 42c, hitting 47-50c under a moderate load.

MY QUESTION... I'm not planning to o/c, so am I safe with these temps? I'm sure I'll hit 55 or so when I get a few big files open and start processing some actions. I've reset the h/s enough times in the mobo that at this point I'd need to take everything out and install the hs outside of the case to make sure it's perfectly attached. Not worth the hassle though, if other people are seeing these temps w/o overclocking and w/ an aftermarket cooloer. From what I've read, temps are all across the board, from 30c idle with stock cooler, to 50c idle with aftermarket cooler - so it seems like it's an installation issue. I also know it needs some break in time, and these temps are after 1 hr. Should I just let it run overnight and see how it measures in the am? These temps are from Asus "Probe" program - I can't check them in bios b/c the hardware monitor feature just freezes the bios for 10 min +.

Question: No warm boot??!!

I have a ABIT KT7A-RAID, AMD Thunderbird 1.2 with a 400W PS... Now here's my current "issue" - My computer does not seem to want to warm boot. I make a change in the BIOS and exit, windows has to restart, etc, and the thing wont boot. Fans star and hard drives spin but no beeps, video output or keyboard lights. The only way to get it to boot normally at this point is to physically unplug the computers power cord from the wall (while "on"), plug it back in and then hit the power button. I've heard of this charateristic with insufficent PS's but I think my 400W has that covered... ?????

Just bought myself an Inspiron 17 5000 series. I'm not happy with the display- the reds are far too warm - just looking at pictures that I can also view on other laptop/ phone, it's nothing like they should be.  I know I can modify the colors in settings- but the colors are default ones - I shouldn't have to do anything!  Is this how the display always is on these machines or is there something I should do?

Answer:Colors- RED too warm

I'm not familiar with the model, but a google search found multiple reviews also criticizing the display colors.

If your purchase is still withing the return/refund window, you may want to simply get your money back and purchase a different laptop.

A buddy told me to give XP a warm boot once a day. I know that the power spike that arises from a cold boot is potentially harmful. What about possible ill effects of a WARM boot?
Has anyone else heard about the good that can come from this practice.
BTW, I plan to disable the Search funtion, which indexes itself during downtime (I never use it anyway),
Thank you!

Answer:Warm boot once a day for XP?

well going by that turning on your computer is harmful to it, so a warm boot would be less harmful yes.

I think the idea is to reboot your computer at least once a day, which is probably a good idea to free up system resources after using a lot of apps.

Though i never found this nececary with XP it handles memory management much better than 9x builds.

Im not totally sure what the logic behind this in terms of damage to your system though, because really since you arnt actually turning anything off (short of periphrial devices like HD's and CD drive and mouse/keyboard) then you may as well have left it on..

Hello together,

my notebook gets very warm on the left side hand of the touch pad,
it seems to be the HDD- right now it shows HDD temperature 50°C/122°F.

It wasn't in the beginning when I bought the notebook.

Is this problem reasoned of the cooling or the HDD or something else ?

What can I do ?

Best regards,
Patrick

Answer:Tecra S1 is getting very warm - maybe HDD?

Hello,

did you already tried to test the HDD with a testtool? Try this "UBCD4WIN" (www.ubcd4win.com), its a windows live cd with some hardware test tools.
Maybe your HDD is just at the end of its life, so you can prevent data loss by testing it.

Otherwise, if unsure, bring your machine to an local service partner for an hardwarecheckup. If there is a problem they will fix it.
If you need something to find the next servicepartner, just try this link:

I hope this helped you
Good luck

Question: WARM Cathode!

Ok i bought a cold cathode the other day just off ebay. It's just a cheap thing. But when i set it up in my case today and left it there for a bit i discovered it isn't so cold at all. There's really a considerable amount of heat coming from it and more heat is the last thing i want in my case just now so anyway my question is. Do these devices usually still radiate a considerable amount of heat (as this is the first one i've ever owned) or if i got a more expensive one is it likely to be more efficient at keeping heat to a minimum. Thanks Max.

I am running an X800 XT PCI-express non overclocked and artic cooling 4 I get temperature readouts of 160F GPU and like 150 enviroment when playing games like Oblivion.. is this to hot? the card still performs flawlessly. I have purchased new thermal cooling and applied that. It seemed to work properly for a few days then it got hot again. What should i do?

Answer:x800 xt really warm

I'm not sure exactly for your ATi card, but for example, my Nvidia 6800GT AGP idles at 56C (133 F) and thats just fine. Under load it gets up to around 147 or so and thats fine too.

as long as you dont see artifacting on the screen, you shouldnt worry.

Question: CPU running warm

Hi!

My sister has a HP Pavilion dv6 with an Intel Core i5-540 processor. According to RealTemp, the CPU idles at about 60 degrees and her computer always feels warm.

She is an Architecture Major and uses programs like Adobe Indesign, and Autodesk Revit which make the temps go up to like 80-90 degrees.

Is this normal or is this too hot?

Answer:CPU running warm

that is a little "warm" to put it lightly. When was the last time you or your sister tried cleaning the dust out of the heatsink assemblies? Turning off the computer and blowing the vents and fan exhaust port with compressed air could help a LOT depending on the build up.

I suggest doing this outside by the way, just in case it is really bad, and I personally remove the keyboard if I can to get in there better, but by all means this is not required.

this may sound crazy, but i have found other people with the same mb/processor setup that i have having this same issue but here goes.

For christmas my gf got me the following

gigabyte ga-x58-usb3
intel i7 950
and a tri channel 6 gig kit corsair xms3 7-8-7-20 ddr3

On a completely cold boot, leaving off overnight, my pc will bluescreen 3 times exactly trying to boot, the bluescreens varry but memory_management is one that pops up alot as well as misc other blue screens, also one windows error, failed to load hook in driver. But on the fourth time, every time, it boots fine.

Its like my pc needs to get warmed up and energized and then it runs perfectly

my i7 950 is running at stock speed at 1.35v
memory at 7-8-7-20 1.66v
Windows 7 proffesional

This is really boggling me, I have run windows memory diag and it shows the mem is good, i probably should also run memtest 86+ to be more accurate though.

Answer:My new i7 950 literally needs to WARM up?

Any suggestions?

Thx - I appreciate it.

Dont be too shocked if its too hot to sit on yor lap. Mine is too once its been on for longer than twenty minutes.

ps. If your worried about it, you could invest in a cooling pad/station. (Cools the laptop from underneath)

Question: Plug getting warm

I'm sure it's not an issue, but I just noticed that the plug for my linksys WRT54G wireless router is getting pretty warm to the touch (not so warm that I can't hang on to it). I was just wondering if this is normal because I am always worried about a fire or something melting. Thanks.

My laptop sits on a pad with two fans cranking away to assist in the cooling.

I added a 3D wallpaper with motion. I thought that I would check the temp. since the fan is cranking away in the computer. Using "Real Temp GT" show four reading (Quad Core) at 171F.

Is this damaging to run these temperatures very long on a laptop. The surface temp feels a little towards very warm rather than just warm. It doesn't feel hot.

I do have two additional fans working on a pad, but. . .?

Thanks for your time.

dwdraw2

Answer:Very warm, or hot laptop

That's 77 degrees C.

High, but within specifications.

I don't use laptops, but they are known to run hot compared to PCs---that's why you bought the fan gizmo.

I wouldn't worry a lot about it. It may die in 30 seconds whether cool or hot. It may die in 15 years if hot or 25 years if cool. It's a tool that you are using within specs, so use it.

Question: Warm Laptop

I've never had much experience of using a lap top, but the one my friend has felt particularly warm. Is this normal? How exactly does alap top cool itself?

Answer:Warm Laptop

Mine gets quite hot not just warm and this is normal. They cool themselves in much the same way as a desc top in that they draw air in across the heatsink on the CPU then exhaust it out through vents on the bottom at the edge, that point can get pretty warm.I use a laptop tray so that the vents don't get covered by clothing.

The bottom left of my NB550D is getting VERY warm, even when the rest if my netbook is cool.

I was wondering what component is this area and if I could just disconnect it. I wouldn't mind losing USB capability or the headphone socket (both of which are located here externally).
Is opening the main part of the case as simple as removing all the screws?

Thank you

Answer:NB550D is getting very warm

Hi,

Sounds like the CPU is causing the high temperature since the copper heatsink is on the left side, I dont recommend removing the CPU :p

There may be some dust build up in the vent, you can use Compressed Air to blow the dust out.

CPU according to conditions used to warm? - Temperature 78% - Fan 90% - due to risk not updated BIOS - that makes a difference? - Fan grilles are free !!
I have until December 2015 TOSHIBA International Warranty - please advise - PC info and conditioning in Annex

Answer:CPU according to conditions used to warm?

Hi

The CPU temperature depends on the notebook usage.
If you run some applications which would load the CPU a lot, then the CPU temperature could increase to a higher level.

To decrease the heat dissipation, it could be advisable to decrease the max CPU performance (< 90%).
This can be done in the Windows Advanced Power options.

I don’t know if it would be the option for you but it seems that the change of thermal grease (for example: arctic mx4) could also help to improve the cooling performance.

Ok, so I have 2 PSUs in my house:

480W TruePowerII Antec - main rig: 1gig of ram, x2 3800+, x850xt, 1 HD

400W Fortron (FSP Group) - emachines rig: 512megs of ram, 6100 IGP, 1 HD, 3000+ sempron

When I feel the air coming out of the fortron, it's cool. Literally. When I feel the air coming out of my antec, it's warm. Not "hot", but warm. Now that I feel it again, it's not "hot" at all, but it IS indeed warm.

Am I to be worried? Or is this normal? I'm just worried because my fortron is all nice and cool, and this baby that's powering my rig is warm...

Also: do you think it's safe to keep running with this one if I were to get a 8800GTS (320MB)? It says it needs a minimum of 400W, which my unit has, and 26A on the +12V rail, which I have as well... my systems isn't really all that loaded:
AMD A64 X2 3800+
1GB Corsair DDR2
1 HD
2 DVD-RW
4 case fans and 2 LEDs
... pretty much it.

Thoughts?

I'm a dabbler so when I found my Wife's computer had been infected I set to work clearing it off. Initially I thought I had a hosts file problem (since I was being redirected and manual attempts to get to sites received 404 errors) but quickly learned my hosts file was fine. It didn;t take much from there to decide it was a DNS issue. I manually changed the DNS entries for the adapter to the comcast addresses but problem remained so at that point I knew I had something not fun at all.

I had a heck of a time getting anything done. MBAM wouldn't install, nor would a number of other utilities. I was able to finally get one (http://www.prevx.com/freescan.asp) to install and it found the rootkit/trojan but charged me 16 bucks for a one month license to get it to remove it. So, I had it remove the files.

After doing this I was able to actually install MBAM and ran it and it found more vestiges. I also ran ComboFix and I believe it found something as well since removed.

Because it was late and I was frustrated I went and deleted out the quarantine folders and everything still seems fine.

When I then went to return my wife's machine to pull the DNS automatically, she wouldn't have access to the Internet. I went ahead and re-entered the manual values I pulled from the router for the DNS settings and it works but I would prefer to be using automatic in case Comcast decides to change up their DNS servers.

Does anyone know the answer or is there someth... Read more

Hi gang, I just had a printer go AWOL so I went to storage to find an old printer of mine. Its an Epson Stylus CX4200. I connected it just fine but went to print and nothing happened. I clicked on the printing queue down in the system tray and it appears that there are 11 jobs ahead of mines from other users in my home, stemming way back to 2009. I have tried to delete them but the screen keeps blinking with refreshing going in and out on the title bar. How can I delete the previous jobs in the queue so that i may print?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Printer queue needs cleared

Go to command line -
Start > Run > cmd > [Enter] (In Vista use Run as Administrator)
Type net stop spooler > [Enter] (Leave command box open)
Go back to Printer Queue and delete jobs. If successful, go back to command line
Type net start spooler > [Enter] then Exit > [Enter]
This stops the print spooler service and restarts after deletion of print jobs.

I can download an fixes/software to fix this so I'm stuck.

Sounds like malware trying to protect itself. Update your anti virus and make a full scan.
Then, I would suggest downloading Malwarebytes and making a full scan, but I know that you cant do that.
Try to install, its not a download, eset online anti virus.
Free Online Virus Scanner | ESET
Then make a full scan.

Hi

I was having trouble with the Bo:Heap virus about a week ago, I successfully cleaned the computer with the help of the lovely Ried. Now this morning, I have tried to boot up, and I am getting constant blue screens in normal mode. I tried to launch the recovery console, but cannot, I can only have access in Safe Mode, which is how I can get online now.
This is a works computer which I have on loan for the Easter Holidays, so obviously I want it to go back to work in the same condition I brought it home in.
Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I'm sure someone can point me in the right direction.

About a week ago, my laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad) was infected by spyware (the PC Defender thing) and then various viruses (Win32 virus?). I tried to follow various instructions on how to get rid of these things, but was not able to for good.

Finally, I used the Thinkpad's ThinkVantage to reinstall the operating system and restore the laptop to factory settings. I then installed AVG Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes and ran scans, and my computer comes out clean and it has been running well with no trace of the viruses.

Does this mean I am in the clear, or could the viruses be lurking in my hard drive somewhere and is there more I need to do?

Answer:Is my laptop cleared of viruses now?

Hi -

If you restored to factory condition and all your scans are coming up clean, you should be fine.

That said, to be able to say with more certainty, I'd need logs from our analysis tools.

We want all our members to perform the steps outlined in the link I'll give you below, before posting for assistance. There's a sticky at the top of this forum, and a

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

Hi.
Scenario:
Recently I was asked to help a friend clean a virus from his PC(Security Tool). He was using Avast Free & Windows Defender. I installed Logmein on it the last time he had a problem so I could try to fix it remotely.
After logging onto his PC I saw I couldn't help. Everything was disabled as usual. He is not computer literate so I couldn't talk him through a Safe Start to possibly get control back. I told him I will need the PC to scan the HD with my PC's virus scanner(Kaspersky). Question 1 for TSF, what are your thoughts on removing a HD & using another PC to clean it? I have done this in the past with moderate success. My success on other PCs, I reinstalled the HD, now I have control & rescan with Malwarebytes which removes more infections. I reset the time & date, rebooted & when WindowsXP Home started there were no signs of a virus.
I immediately started scanning with Malwarebytes & when finished it found 3 infections: Security Tool & 2 rootkits. They were deleted & everything is fine now. I replaced the battery & it is up to date. Question 2: Could the fact that the BIOS was out of date cause the virus not to ac... Read more

Hi,I had the following infections removed via Kaspersky and I'm trying to determine if there is still a trojan or otherwise harmful virus living on my computer. I have to pay bills today and I'm nervous! I have attached a hijack this log at the bottom. These alerts doesn't mean that they are infected. So, the programs you have to update are 7-zip, Process Explorer, Sun Java, Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Photoshop.Or, you can run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan to find out what programs need to be updated. You'll also get links where you can download the latest versions.Extra note... I notice from your log that there's more than 1 Antivirus instal... Read more

I picked up another lovely variant of that damn Ukash virus that's all the rage recently and rebooted my computer to safe mode with networking and ran Malwarebytes AM and ESET's scanner to clean it up (logs to follow in the post) but I'm not entirely sure I'm clean. Microsoft security essentials won't turn on (it claims not to exist as an installed service, despite being in the control panel in Installed programs) and every so often a tab to some unsafe site or another will open in firefox without my input.

Since these things seem pretty hinky, I think I'm still infected with something, can anyone offer me some help in finishing clean up?
